- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast presented by BET three
- 0:12Speaker 1: six five. We are part of the Action Network. I
- 0:16Speaker 1: am Chad Millman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network. Listen,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we are less than a week removed from the glorious,
- 0:25Speaker 1: record setting historic NFL Draft. There were hits, there were misses,
- 0:33Speaker 1: a massive surprise, at least a massive surprise to everyone
- 0:39Speaker 1: except our guest today, which we will get to. Our
- 0:43Speaker 1: guests somehow predicted this exact outcome for this player nearly
- 0:50Speaker 1: a month ago. And of course we have some follow
- 0:53Speaker 1: ups on our bets from last week. But first let's
- 0:56Speaker 1: bring in my co host, my companion, my compadre might
- 0:59Speaker 1: be professional better. Simon Hunter ed.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Oh, so I'm in h raft Chad, Chad Chat. What
- 1:07Speaker 2: a week it was for us as fans of the
- 1:10Speaker 2: Eagles and Bears as fans of the draft. Couldn't have
- 1:13Speaker 2: been gone better as the weekend.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I gotta say it was kind of perfect. You know,
- 1:17Speaker 1: you sit there and we've talked about this. The Bears
- 1:22Speaker 1: have been so bad at everything for so long, like
- 1:25Speaker 1: as an organization, as an ownership group, in terms of competence, management, hiring, drafting.
- 1:33Speaker 1: The fact Ryan Pauls was able to get out of
- 1:37Speaker 1: the position to draft Bryce Young, and then you know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: luck being the sort of downstream impact of good planning
- 1:49Speaker 1: getting the number one pick, getting Caleb Williams, and then
- 1:52Speaker 1: Roma Dunees falling to number nine. Holy fuck, that was insane,
- 1:58Speaker 1: totally insane, and Howie pulling a rabbit out of the
- 2:03Speaker 1: hat getting Cooper de Jean from Iowa, who everyone freaking loves.
- 2:08Speaker 1: We had good We had a good night.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and from now on, I'm gonna start calling Howie
- 2:12Speaker 2: big Pimp. And I don't know if you saw that clip,
- 2:14Speaker 2: absolutely love it. He didn't know what the hell to say,
- 2:17Speaker 2: which just so hilarious. He was just so in shock.
- 2:19Speaker 2: But yeah, he got my number one safety that I
- 2:22Speaker 2: grated out, and he got my number one corner without
- 2:25Speaker 2: really doing anything to get them, so like gave up
- 2:28Speaker 2: a couple of picks to get up there to get
- 2:29Speaker 2: the jeene. But yeah, pretty incredible. And for you guys,
- 2:33Speaker 2: I think I said it two months ago, like if
- 2:35Speaker 2: you just go the best quarterback, which you did Williams
- 2:40Speaker 2: at one, and then if you get one of these
- 2:42Speaker 2: three top three receivers or these top two offensive linemen,
- 2:45Speaker 2: it was a slam dunk of a draft for the Bears,
- 2:48Speaker 2: and you did it. I can't believe you guys got Rome.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Rome's so good. I love everything about him is like
- 2:54Speaker 2: his mental makeup, all of it. He reminds me of
- 2:56Speaker 2: a guy that Johnny played with and Mike Evans, like
- 3:00Speaker 2: they got that really cool personality type of laid back
- 3:04Speaker 2: killers that work really hard. So obviously you want to
- 3:07Speaker 2: get Johnny's view on that as well. But yeah, Bears
- 3:10Speaker 2: Eagles draft, we're being really huge Homers right now. But yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 2: very exciting, Simon.
- 3:15Speaker 1: I haven't introduced our very special surprised guest yet. Speaking
- 3:20Speaker 1: of speaking of Big Pimpin, I'll get to Johnny Manzel.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Thanks for ruining the surprise in one second. Let me
- 3:27Speaker 1: just recap real quickly. I forgot he wasn't on screen
- 3:30Speaker 1: for everybody. Our Bets from last week. You know, it
- 3:34Speaker 1: was the first time since the Super Bowl that we
- 3:36Speaker 1: were sort of doing an official best Bets episode. We
- 3:40Speaker 1: did pretty well. Like, first of all, congrats to you.
- 3:44Speaker 1: You were on Jaden Daniels as the number two overall
- 3:46Speaker 1: pick from the time he was at plus money. He
- 3:50Speaker 1: closed at minus one thousand, So very nice job, Simon.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I know that was something that had been stressing you
- 3:55Speaker 1: out for three months. I know it's your livelihood. You
- 3:59Speaker 1: nailed it. Very nice job. Other big hits over five
- 4:03Speaker 1: and a half qbs taken in the first round the
- 4:05Speaker 1: line was four and a half. The allt line was
- 4:07Speaker 1: five and a half. We were getting it at plus
- 4:09Speaker 1: two hundred. Nailed it. JJ McCarthy, who everybody was trying
- 4:13Speaker 1: to smoke screen he was going to move up to
- 4:15Speaker 1: number three or number two. You had him at over
- 4:17Speaker 1: five and a half in the draft in draft position.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Nailed it. Here's where we lost Joe Alt over seven
- 4:25Speaker 1: and a half draft position over six trades in the
- 4:27Speaker 1: first round. Amazingly, so few trades over six and a
- 4:30Speaker 1: half d line in the first round. It landed at
- 4:33Speaker 1: six all right. Before we bring in our very own
- 4:36Speaker 1: Nostra Damis, who we've already teased as a reminder, The

- 5:35Speaker 1: Network YouTube page. All right, we're bringing back Johnny Football
- 5:40Speaker 1: Johnny Manziel. He's coming back for a few reasons.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Number one, he told great stories, had great analysis, not
- 5:47Speaker 1: just last week but all throughout the franchise Mode series.
- 5:51Speaker 1: There has been some very interesting Heisman news since he
- 5:53Speaker 1: was on last week that I know he will have
- 5:56Speaker 1: opinions about. We're going to get to that later in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the show, but first Johnny Manziel before anybody else in
- 6:04Speaker 1: Franchise Mode our series on the Draft, you said Michael
- 6:10Speaker 1: Pennix would be a top ten pick. The exact quote was,
- 6:14Speaker 1: the biggest steal of the draft will be this guy
- 6:18Speaker 1: going anywhere in the top ten. You feel vindicated today, Johnny.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I couldn't be happier. I think probably the best
- 6:27Speaker 4: fit out of any place that he could have gone
- 6:30Speaker 4: in the draft. I like him being in Atlanta, and
- 6:32Speaker 4: I know a lot of people in Atlanta right now,
- 6:34Speaker 4: and I saw a lot of reactions to the draft
- 6:36Speaker 4: that people were like, what is going on? We just
- 6:39Speaker 4: paid Kirk Cousins all this money, and now we're going
- 6:41Speaker 4: to go spend even more money in our first round
- 6:43Speaker 4: pick on another quarterback. I think for Benex this couldn't
- 6:47Speaker 4: be any better as far as him getting a chance
- 6:50Speaker 4: to sit learn behind a guy who's been a veteran
- 6:53Speaker 4: there in the league for a while. And you know,
- 6:55Speaker 4: my initial opinion when I saw the pick was Kirk
- 6:59Speaker 4: Cousins is going to have a well of stress this
- 7:01Speaker 4: training camp.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So explain a little bit, Like you were so far
- 7:06Speaker 1: ahead of this, you were talking about this late March
- 7:09Speaker 1: early April whenever we recorded the series, And I remember,
- 7:13Speaker 1: I think I was in the control room when you
- 7:17Speaker 1: made the comment about Michael Pennox, and I was like,
- 7:21Speaker 1: that is going to be a different take than anybody
- 7:24Speaker 1: else doing any the draft analysis. Hast were you because like,
- 7:29Speaker 1: when that stuff happens, and we've talked about this on
- 7:31Speaker 1: the show. Simon knows this too. There's a lot of
- 7:36Speaker 1: talk in the weeks leading up to the draft and
- 7:39Speaker 1: you live this about where guys are going to go,
- 7:41Speaker 1: what the smoke screens are, what the true stories are.
- 7:44Speaker 1: You are not known as a draft analyst, so explain
- 7:49Speaker 1: to people how you came to that conclusion. Were you
- 7:51Speaker 1: talking to people in the NFL, like getting a sense
- 7:55Speaker 1: of where his position might be, and that people liked
- 7:58Speaker 1: him more than was being let on.
- 8:00Speaker 4: You know, the NFL draft every single year has a
- 8:02Speaker 4: lot of the same stuff to it. Right, we get
- 8:05Speaker 4: two three weeks before the draft, everybody starts. You know,
- 8:08Speaker 4: you'll hear positive spins throughout the whole way, and then
- 8:11Speaker 4: once you start getting closer, these teams start, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 4: they'll start putting some information out there about guys or
- 8:16Speaker 4: scouts or it's anonymous, and you kind of see things
- 8:19Speaker 4: and see the trend of where this is going to go.
- 8:22Speaker 4: So guys and teams in the NFL can go get
- 8:24Speaker 4: the person that they really want to. And you know,
- 8:27Speaker 4: the NFL, even behind the scenes, is still all about
- 8:30Speaker 4: the drama and all about getting the people that they
- 8:33Speaker 4: really want, and you're trying to trick and bamboozle a
- 8:36Speaker 4: lot of different guys throughout this process. So for me,
- 8:39Speaker 4: you know, what I heard through the draft process was
- 8:42Speaker 4: nothing but positive things about Michael Pennix, about.
- 8:45Speaker 3: The way his work ethic was, about the way his
- 8:48Speaker 3: meetings were.
- 8:50Speaker 4: You know, where I do my training and people that
- 8:52Speaker 4: I work out with had everybody that I went to
- 8:55Speaker 4: had great things to say about them that this kid
- 8:58Speaker 4: works hard, that this guy has a great work ethic,
- 9:00Speaker 4: that you know, he's in it for the football reasons.
- 9:03Speaker 4: That for me, and knowing what I had seen of
- 9:06Speaker 4: him play the position, you know, I truly feel that,
- 9:10Speaker 4: you know, he's got a lot of potential and uh.
- 9:15Speaker 3: He's going to be the guy there, and he's going
- 9:16Speaker 3: to be.
- 9:16Speaker 4: The guy there for a while. I think it's just
- 9:18Speaker 4: going to take some time for it to figure itself out.
- 9:20Speaker 4: So for me, I look at it you know, in
- 9:22Speaker 4: the same way that I did when I was going
- 9:24Speaker 4: through the draft process, and I know what was said
- 9:25Speaker 4: about me, and I know that the smoke screens came
- 9:27Speaker 4: out and who told me that they were going to
- 9:29Speaker 4: take me and then it ended up not happening, and
- 9:32Speaker 4: just it's a it's a very slippery slope, especially once
- 9:34Speaker 4: you get closer to the draft. So leading up to that,
- 9:37Speaker 4: you know, I had a feeling that he has the
- 9:39Speaker 4: talent of a first round player. He just needed to
- 9:42Speaker 4: find an organization that believed him and believed in him,
- 9:44Speaker 4: and I think Atlanta's that for him.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That's what I was most curious about, because it seemed
- 9:50Speaker 1: like such an outside take. It wouldn't be something that's
- 9:54Speaker 1: coming just from film study, like you had to be
- 9:57Speaker 1: hearing from people connected to the world.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Here here's the thing that GM that you can tell
- 10:01Speaker 4: having to talk with Arthur Blank as the pick is
- 10:03Speaker 4: coming in, I guarantee you the owner of the Falcons
- 10:06Speaker 4: is sitting there looking at him like, what are you doing?
- 10:10Speaker 4: We don't need another quarterback. I just spend one hundred
- 10:12Speaker 4: and sixty million dollars on Kirk Cousins. Why do I
- 10:15Speaker 4: need another one, and you can see him sitting there
- 10:18Speaker 4: kind of explaining it and like, this is the kind
- 10:20Speaker 4: of pick that gets people fired in the NFL if
- 10:23Speaker 4: it doesn't work out.
- 10:24Speaker 3: And that's just the reality of the situation and what
- 10:26Speaker 3: it is.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Like he's going to have to go in and play
- 10:29Speaker 4: and be the guy as a first round pick, and
- 10:32Speaker 4: you know, a top ten pick that's going to have
- 10:34Speaker 4: to go and live up to those expectations. And now
- 10:37Speaker 4: that GM and him are tied to each other for
- 10:40Speaker 4: the rest of their time there, and you know, when
- 10:42Speaker 4: it comes down to it, you know, you lay your
- 10:45Speaker 4: job on the line for a guy. That's how much
- 10:47Speaker 4: belief that they had in him there in Atlanta.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So I know Simon wants to follow up, but I
- 10:52Speaker 1: just want to let people know you live a luxurious life.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You're outside, so if people hear birds chirping, it's just
- 10:58Speaker 1: because you're you know, all about it. I don't want
- 11:00Speaker 1: people like listening to be like, is something going on
- 11:02Speaker 1: with my with my iPhone? Right now?
- 11:04Speaker 2: Simon, go ahead, Yeah, the alant thing. That's gonna be
- 11:08Speaker 2: a huge story, right Chad for probably the next two
- 11:11Speaker 2: three years. People that listen to the show know my
- 11:15Speaker 2: opinion and Chad's putting on Atlanta. We enjoyed betting on them,
- 11:18Speaker 2: but we think their front office are not idiots, but
- 11:21Speaker 2: they do a lot of dumb stuff, like them taking
- 11:23Speaker 2: a tight end instead of taking a quarterback years ago.
- 11:27Speaker 2: They're paying for it now all these years later, and
- 11:29Speaker 2: that's a real thing, like they should have just took
- 11:31Speaker 2: it taken justin Field. Who knows how he would have
- 11:33Speaker 2: worked out, but it's probably better than Pitt's has been
- 11:36Speaker 2: for them, right, So that's that's the question here with
- 11:40Speaker 2: the Falcons. They don't have the good gracious of green Bay,
- 11:44Speaker 2: where green Bay still took a ton of crap for
- 11:45Speaker 2: drafting Jordan of Love. But it made sense in some
- 11:48Speaker 2: altitude of it. But uh, my biggest thing from that
- 11:51Speaker 2: Atlanta thing was who is Kirk Cousins to be upset
- 11:53Speaker 2: at Atlanta to be taking this this guy he's in
- 11:57Speaker 2: no position like he's made a ton of money, but
- 12:00Speaker 2: they're doing what's best for the organization. All he needs
- 12:02Speaker 2: to do is produce. But I just thought that whole
- 12:04Speaker 2: thing was bizarre with Kirk Cousins. But with you, Johnny,
- 12:07Speaker 2: and your experience of everything you've dealt with and smoke screens.
- 12:10Speaker 2: I mean, what is that like, like on draft day,
- 12:13Speaker 2: dealing with that kind of stuff. Is it just making
- 12:15Speaker 2: your head spin because there's just so much different noise
- 12:17Speaker 2: coming from so many different directions.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 4: I think during my draft especially, you know, there was
- 12:23Speaker 4: a couple of picks early on. Jacksonville was one I
- 12:25Speaker 4: remember very intently at number three that was going to
- 12:29Speaker 4: take a quarterback, and we had taken meetings there, We
- 12:32Speaker 4: had been there, we had met with them, We felt
- 12:34Speaker 4: like we had a very very good relationship with everybody
- 12:37Speaker 4: that was there in the organization. And then you know,
- 12:39Speaker 4: as draft night came along and that third pick came along,
- 12:41Speaker 4: you have a sense of feeling like that that's going
- 12:44Speaker 4: to be your place that you're going to go because
- 12:45Speaker 4: you truly, in my position, I didn't know. And I
- 12:49Speaker 4: remember getting a text from my agent getting into text
- 12:51Speaker 4: after the draft and kind of getting like an apology
- 12:54Speaker 4: text from somebody in the organization and Jacksonville like, hey,
- 12:58Speaker 4: you know, sorry, we kind of used you to go
- 12:59Speaker 4: get the guy that we really wanted. And I sit
- 13:02Speaker 4: there remembering back about it even to this day and
- 13:04Speaker 4: being like, huh, it was the first time that I
- 13:06Speaker 4: kind of had seen the way that the business works
- 13:08Speaker 4: in the NFL and how that goes, and you know,
- 13:10Speaker 4: there are times where, you know, especially in my situation,
- 13:13Speaker 4: where I was used as a little bit of a
- 13:14Speaker 4: pond for you know, trading material, block or whatever it was.
- 13:17Speaker 4: And you know, at the end of my draft, I
- 13:19Speaker 4: was going to end up going to I was gonna
- 13:22Speaker 4: the twenty third pick was I thought what we thought
- 13:24Speaker 4: was our you know, floor, and then the Browns ended
- 13:27Speaker 4: up trading up to twenty two to end up taking
- 13:29Speaker 4: me in front of the team that was you know,
- 13:31Speaker 4: that was looking at me. So there is a lot
- 13:33Speaker 4: of smoke screens, and from the player perspective and the
- 13:35Speaker 4: player side of it, you know, you truly don't know
- 13:38Speaker 4: what the heck is going on.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Well, look, the the story around JJ McCarthy was fascinating,
- 13:46Speaker 1: and I feel like you can relate to that a
- 13:48Speaker 1: little bit. Here's a guy who all through the draft,
- 13:52Speaker 1: his draft position was bouncing around as high as number two,
- 13:57Speaker 1: as low as late for his round, and he was
- 14:00Speaker 1: out there saying how great the conversation was with the Giants.
- 14:04Speaker 1: You could get a sense a little bit afterwards that
- 14:08Speaker 1: everybody was pushing out stories about how they felt about
- 14:14Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy in ways to put themselves in a better
- 14:18Speaker 1: position with the picks before where he was actually taken
- 14:22Speaker 1: as a player. How much is that messing with your
- 14:26Speaker 1: head in those moments like it's supposed to be an
- 14:29Speaker 1: incredible night. How much are you stressing feeling the pressure
- 14:36Speaker 1: of having been used as a smoke screen.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I couldn't have felt more pressure, especially as you're sitting there.
- 14:43Speaker 4: And what a lot of people don't understand about the
- 14:45Speaker 4: NFL Draft, and especially the first round in particular, is
- 14:48Speaker 4: every pick that you slide is about a million bucks,
- 14:50Speaker 4: if not more so. Knowing that going into it, as
- 14:54Speaker 4: the clock would end and the pick would come off,
- 14:56Speaker 4: I'd sit there and look at my sister, look at
- 14:58Speaker 4: my dad and be like, well, there's another million down
- 15:00Speaker 4: the drain, and another million down the drain, and another
- 15:03Speaker 4: million down the drain. So from a financial standpoint of
- 15:05Speaker 4: what you're trying to do and trying to accomplish, as
- 15:08Speaker 4: well as a sense of pride in what you want
- 15:10Speaker 4: to do, you know you don't know though, the way
- 15:12Speaker 4: these organizations are ran. As you're sitting there being an
- 15:15Speaker 4: NFL Draft prospect, you don't know where your right fit
- 15:17Speaker 4: is going to be.
- 15:18Speaker 3: So is J. J.
- 15:19Speaker 4: McCarthy's sitting there months before, you know, not knowing where
- 15:22Speaker 4: he's going to go, bouncing from this grade to that grade,
- 15:25Speaker 4: to this team to that team. I would feel that
- 15:27Speaker 4: he had to, you know, he had to have a
- 15:29Speaker 4: little bit of stress behind that. But you know, at
- 15:31Speaker 4: the end of the day, getting picked where he did,
- 15:34Speaker 4: with the coaching staff that he did, he should feel
- 15:38Speaker 4: absolutely unbelievable. I think it's a great fit for him,
- 15:42Speaker 4: A great coach that.
- 15:43Speaker 3: He has there, a great quarterback coach that he has there.
- 15:47Speaker 4: I think he's going to walk into that room from
- 15:49Speaker 4: day one and feel really comfortable. And it's gonna remind him,
- 15:53Speaker 4: just based on the coaches and people that he has around,
- 15:55Speaker 4: of a lot of warrior.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Just came from a Michigan.
- 16:01Speaker 1: How do how does your family keep your spirits up
- 16:06Speaker 1: when you're dropping in the draft?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Not a lot you can do.
- 16:09Speaker 4: You know, it's for the most part, you know, you're
- 16:11Speaker 4: sitting there trying to be as relaxed as normal as possible.
- 16:14Speaker 4: And I remember going to the NFL Draft and sitting
- 16:16Speaker 4: in the green room and it's a very just on
- 16:19Speaker 4: a personal level, it's a very tough thing to sit
- 16:22Speaker 4: there and maybe be the last person sitting in that
- 16:25Speaker 4: green room, maybe having to show up to a day
- 16:27Speaker 4: two to be a second round pick. When you sit
- 16:29Speaker 4: there and you tell your friends and your family and like,
- 16:32Speaker 4: have all of these people come out to New York
- 16:34Speaker 4: to watch your big day, and then that big day
- 16:36Speaker 4: doesn't happen potentially the way that you had anticipated and
- 16:40Speaker 4: hoped that it would. So I mean it's a very
- 16:42Speaker 4: very stressful point for not only you, but for your
- 16:45Speaker 4: family and everybody involved. Do you have an agent here
- 16:48Speaker 4: that gets a cut off of that, so every dollar
- 16:51Speaker 4: comes out of his pocket as well? You got things
- 16:53Speaker 4: that you want to do. These are your dreams and
- 16:55Speaker 4: livelihood and everything you've ever wanted, you know, coming to
- 16:58Speaker 4: the forefront and it's right in front of your and
- 17:00Speaker 4: then you're just waiting on a team to come up
- 17:02Speaker 4: and grab you.
- 17:03Speaker 3: So it's excruciating.
- 17:04Speaker 1: That's fucking brittle. It does say, It actually does sound terrible.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah, and just the quarterbacks in general, where you know,
- 17:12Speaker 2: we're giving Johnny as Flowers here for good reason for
- 17:14Speaker 2: the penis call, but I think I want listeners of
- 17:16Speaker 2: the show and just in general will take this view
- 17:18Speaker 2: of just because people mocks certain quarterbacks certain places. That's
- 17:22Speaker 2: why even last year I was talking about Bryce shaung
- 17:23Speaker 2: being a second round pick, and I took a lot
- 17:25Speaker 2: of heat for it, same kind of hea Johnny probably
- 17:27Speaker 2: took care for, say Pennix was the top ten guy.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It's like the NFL, these teams really do rate these
- 17:33Speaker 2: guys differently, and I think that's a big thing too,
- 17:35Speaker 2: a lesson learned from going forward in the future, Like
- 17:38Speaker 2: the quarterback positions just valued differently than it was even
- 17:41Speaker 2: say five years ago. Like the fact that a guy
- 17:43Speaker 2: like Jalen Hurts was a second round pick, it would
- 17:46Speaker 2: not happen anymore. Right, a guy who's produced at two
- 17:48Speaker 2: different top tier programs coming into the draft, that's super athletic,
- 17:52Speaker 2: he probably would be a back end first round maybe
- 17:54Speaker 2: middle of first round pick now. And I think we've
- 17:56Speaker 2: seen that change now where bo Nicks probably should have
- 17:59Speaker 2: been second round pick. That was not going to happen.
- 18:02Speaker 2: And I mean, it's it's gonna be shocking here to people,
- 18:05Speaker 2: but Drake may had a second round grade on a
- 18:06Speaker 2: lot of people's boards, which is crazy to hear, but
- 18:09Speaker 2: that's just the reality of the scenario, and we heard
- 18:12Speaker 2: from a lot of sources Washington was going to take JJ,
- 18:16Speaker 2: and if they didn't take Daniels, everyone thought it was
- 18:18Speaker 2: Drake May. They were actually talking about JJ. So you know,
- 18:22Speaker 2: I just I want people to, you know, take a
- 18:24Speaker 2: step back here when they're really bashing Johnny or about
- 18:26Speaker 2: the pendix thing, where it's like, that's how these draft
- 18:29Speaker 2: grades work with these different quarterbacks. People like, it's just
- 18:31Speaker 2: it's really opinion based. Where the difference is that's small.
- 18:35Speaker 2: So from Johnny's perspective, I want to hear in your draft,
- 18:41Speaker 2: were you in your mind like going into it, did
- 18:42Speaker 2: you have like did you have people telling you you
- 18:45Speaker 2: were going to be a top five pick, or were
- 18:47Speaker 2: you going into it just saying I'm just hoping to
- 18:49Speaker 2: be your first round here, because I know a lot
- 18:51Speaker 2: of people that had a second round grade on you.
- 18:53Speaker 2: So I want to know when you're hearing all that
- 18:54Speaker 2: noise written your mind, you're like, you know, I'm a
- 18:56Speaker 2: first rounder and there has to be some relief there
- 18:59Speaker 2: that you were a first round because you were looking
- 19:01Speaker 2: like you were going to slide to the second round.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, I mean that the way the draft works
- 19:06Speaker 4: is like you know you're deciding. You know, I left
- 19:08Speaker 4: school early, so I decided I was going to go
- 19:11Speaker 4: leave two years of eligibility left on the table, and
- 19:13Speaker 4: I was going to go try my chances in the
- 19:14Speaker 4: NFL draft. So with that, you send in your NFL
- 19:17Speaker 4: draft papers, which is pretty much you know, uh, you
- 19:21Speaker 4: send in a form to a bunch of scouts essentially,
- 19:25Speaker 4: and they come back with a collection of what they
- 19:27Speaker 4: think your draft grade is going to be.
- 19:29Speaker 3: So I got a one two grade back on my paper.
- 19:32Speaker 4: So I had a feeling going into it that I
- 19:34Speaker 4: was going to be a first or a second round pick.
- 19:36Speaker 4: For me in my draft, it was first round or
- 19:39Speaker 4: I'm going to go disappear for a couple of weeks
- 19:41Speaker 4: so I can get my head right. It was it
- 19:45Speaker 4: was such like an ego thing for me to have
- 19:46Speaker 4: to be a first round pick. But it didn't matter where,
- 19:48Speaker 4: it didn't matter what, Like I had to be that guy.
- 19:51Speaker 4: I had to be, you know, a four year contract
- 19:53Speaker 4: with a fifth year option, And it was like at
- 19:55Speaker 4: that point in time of where I was at, my
- 19:57Speaker 4: life meant the world to me. And you know, I
- 19:59Speaker 4: think looking back, it's way more about fit and about
- 20:02Speaker 4: who you get with and who believes in you as
- 20:04Speaker 4: a coach, right because when I got to Cleveland, I
- 20:07Speaker 4: had you know, offensive coaches that were very very high
- 20:10Speaker 4: on me. He loved my potential and loved, you know,
- 20:14Speaker 4: things about my game. And then there are other people
- 20:16Speaker 4: are parts of the organization that didn't whatsoever. So that's
- 20:19Speaker 4: what I look at now as I sit here and
- 20:21Speaker 4: think about, you know, ranking the fits and ranking these
- 20:23Speaker 4: guys and where they ended up. Like, you know, I
- 20:25Speaker 4: love Caleb in Chicago, I love Pentics in Atlanta. I
- 20:30Speaker 4: think that gives him a chance to be able to
- 20:32Speaker 4: sit back and relax and learn and not have a
- 20:34Speaker 4: pressure on him right away. I think Drake May is
- 20:36Speaker 4: in a really really sticky situation right now with what's
- 20:39Speaker 4: going on in New England. I just truly don't feel
- 20:41Speaker 4: they're good enough as a football team and have the
- 20:43Speaker 4: pieces around him. I think he's going to come in
- 20:45Speaker 4: and struggle early on, because let's let's face it, he's
- 20:48Speaker 4: most likely going to play early and early on. And
- 20:50Speaker 4: then you look at McCarthy, you know, a guy who has,
- 20:53Speaker 4: you know, a great situation where he's going into maybe
- 20:55Speaker 4: a little competition throughout the camp, but you know, an
- 20:59Speaker 4: amazing spot him to be in and then bow Knicks
- 21:02Speaker 4: for him to end up being a first round pick,
- 21:03Speaker 4: and where he went with a guy like Sean Payton
- 21:05Speaker 4: and a team like that. I mean, if you look
- 21:08Speaker 4: at the first round and it makes a lot of
- 21:10Speaker 4: sense and you can kind of see what these teams
- 21:12Speaker 4: were thinking.
- 21:12Speaker 3: But it really only takes one guy to find.
- 21:15Speaker 4: You and like you and be like he's coming with us,
- 21:19Speaker 4: exactly like what you saw with in Atlanta.
- 21:21Speaker 1: So bo Nix is so interesting because if you had said,
- 21:27Speaker 1: twelve months ago, built a parlay Jaden Daniels to win
- 21:33Speaker 1: the Heisman, bow Knicks and Jaden Daniels to go top
- 21:39Speaker 1: fifteen in the draft, you would have made the kind
- 21:43Speaker 1: of money that Simon Hunter makes in every single bet
- 21:46Speaker 1: that he wins. I mean it was that long shot,
- 21:49Speaker 1: that much of a long shot. So bo Nix goes
- 21:51Speaker 1: twelve to Sean Payton and everyone is sort of one.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Hundred one to go to Atlanta on the morning of
- 21:56Speaker 2: the draft.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I mean it's insane, yeah, but Bonix goes to Sean Payton,
- 22:01Speaker 1: goes to the Broncos. It's an overreach by whatever the
- 22:05Speaker 1: standard is, right, Like, it's all made up currency. However,
- 22:09Speaker 1: we value players like I've got a grade of him,
- 22:12Speaker 1: you know, thirty seven to forty two and not me,
- 22:15Speaker 1: but like a draft analyst will say that he went twelve.
- 22:18Speaker 1: That's an overreach. Everyone wan's making it up. So Sean
- 22:23Speaker 1: Payton likes this. But the very specific question I have
- 22:25Speaker 1: for you, Johnny is people got after bon Nicks because
- 22:30Speaker 1: his average depth of target is less than four yards
- 22:34Speaker 1: and a lot of the yardage came from his receivers
- 22:37Speaker 1: on yards after the catch. Explain the difference between the
- 22:42Speaker 1: throws you can make in college versus this rose you
- 22:45Speaker 1: need to make in the NFL, and why people do
- 22:48Speaker 1: not think from what they saw a bon Nicks he
- 22:50Speaker 1: has that next level ability.
- 22:53Speaker 4: I think what I look at is I remember when
- 22:55Speaker 4: I got to the NFL, and there are some throws
- 22:58Speaker 4: that you see older vets make look really really effortlessly,
- 23:03Speaker 4: and throws like an eighteen twenty yard comeback coming back
- 23:07Speaker 4: to eighteen ball has to be out down the sideline
- 23:09Speaker 4: to where in college these dbs aren't is good to
- 23:14Speaker 4: make a break on the ball and pick that ball
- 23:17Speaker 4: if it's on the inside a little bit. These throws
- 23:19Speaker 4: in the NFL need to be placed outside away from this.
- 23:22Speaker 4: It's all about leverage, and like you know, I think
- 23:25Speaker 4: Sean Payton said it really really well after the draft,
- 23:27Speaker 4: is that they took a lot of bon Nixes and
- 23:31Speaker 4: all the quarterbacks in this draft. They took all their
- 23:33Speaker 4: bubbles out, their RPOs, all these kind of easy, slick
- 23:37Speaker 4: throws that you'll see in the college football game that
- 23:39Speaker 4: they run at Oregon and a lot of these spread offenses.
- 23:42Speaker 4: They took all of those out and they just looked
- 23:44Speaker 4: at vertical passing game, which is what the NFL is. Right,
- 23:47Speaker 4: You're getting into play action, you're pushing the ball down
- 23:50Speaker 4: the field, you're trying to get defenders to come up,
- 23:52Speaker 4: especially linebackers, and you're trying to you know, create some
- 23:55Speaker 4: space in the secondary because of how tight the secondary
- 23:58Speaker 4: is in the NFL. So Seamp Hayton takes all the bubbles,
- 24:01Speaker 4: all the stuff out and just looks at vertical passing
- 24:04Speaker 4: game and they like bow next the best. And that's
- 24:06Speaker 4: what it comes down to, Like they need to push
- 24:08Speaker 4: the ball down the field and make these throws on
- 24:11Speaker 4: time without hitches, knowing where you're going with the football.
- 24:15Speaker 4: And that's the biggest thing that I think I look
- 24:18Speaker 4: at when I'm evaluating a lot of these guys, Like
- 24:20Speaker 4: I saw Penix drop hit his back foot and let
- 24:23Speaker 4: the ball go early before guys were out of their
- 24:26Speaker 4: breaks with a lot of height, and like you know,
- 24:28Speaker 4: you see Caleb Williams do that. The timing, the anticipation
- 24:32Speaker 4: where the ball needs to be placed. That's something that
- 24:35Speaker 4: your casual everyday fan, you know, is not going to
- 24:38Speaker 4: be able to really really see. Sure they know it,
- 24:41Speaker 4: but it's different than when you get into that film
- 24:43Speaker 4: room after every day during training camp and they're sitting
- 24:46Speaker 4: there grilling you every single day.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Why is this ball inside? Why is this ball inside?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Why is it not here? Why are you late? Why'd
- 24:54Speaker 3: you take that extra hitch right? Why is that ball out?
- 24:57Speaker 4: On this paper it says it needs to be out
- 24:59Speaker 4: of your hand when back foot hit. Why isn't it
- 25:02Speaker 4: Those are the kind of questions that you get grilled on.
- 25:04Speaker 4: And when I look at the game, that's the only
- 25:06Speaker 4: way that I know how to do it. You know,
- 25:08Speaker 4: the only way I know how to do it is
- 25:09Speaker 4: having Kyle Shanahan breathe down my fricking neck and wonder
- 25:12Speaker 4: why that ball's not out on time? So what I
- 25:15Speaker 4: look at in the guys, is are they doing that
- 25:17Speaker 4: at a college level, because if they're not, you have
- 25:20Speaker 4: to get into that process of or you're.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Learning it through your training camp.
- 25:23Speaker 4: And if you're learning how to relearning how to take
- 25:25Speaker 4: a drop and take snaps under center, you're naturally the
- 25:28Speaker 4: game is going to be slow to you.
- 25:30Speaker 3: It's not going to be here naturally, it's going to
- 25:32Speaker 3: be faster you. It's not going to be slow.
- 25:34Speaker 1: By the way, I want to get to the Heisman
- 25:37Speaker 1: stuff because that the answer you just gave is fantastic
- 25:41Speaker 1: and it also felt like you were reliving it in
- 25:44Speaker 1: the moment with Kyle Shanahan breathing down your neck. Shanahan
- 25:48Speaker 1: is considered to be such a genius of a coach
- 25:51Speaker 1: right now. Offensively give people some insight into what he
- 25:55Speaker 1: is like in the room when he is giving direction
- 25:59Speaker 1: like that.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Yeah, Kyle Shanahan is that guy. I couldn't have more
- 26:03Speaker 3: respect for him and what he does.
- 26:04Speaker 4: And there's a reason why the San Francisco forty nine
- 26:07Speaker 4: ers are the team that they are right now.
- 26:10Speaker 3: The detail that you get from a guy like that
- 26:15Speaker 3: is truly bizarre.
- 26:16Speaker 4: You wouldn't think an offensive coordinator a head coach, a
- 26:19Speaker 4: quarterback coach, everything he's been throughout the years. But you
- 26:23Speaker 4: wouldn't think, or I didn't think when I first got there,
- 26:25Speaker 4: that he could coach all what, however many positions you're
- 26:31Speaker 4: on a football team, you want to call it offense,
- 26:32Speaker 4: defense eleven twenty two plus the kicker and the punter
- 26:36Speaker 4: and the long snapper. You know, let's call it like
- 26:38Speaker 4: twenty five positions. I'd be twenty six positions. He can
- 26:42Speaker 4: coach every single one of them, from offensive linement to
- 26:45Speaker 4: where their hat placement goes like a stripe on their
- 26:47Speaker 4: hat needs to be on this shoulder right, your hand
- 26:50Speaker 4: needs to be here. We're never going to get that block.
- 26:52Speaker 4: We're never going to be able to reach that technique.
- 26:55Speaker 4: So the detail on what you have and what you
- 26:57Speaker 4: get from a guy like that is something that will
- 26:58Speaker 4: stick with you for the rest of your life. You know,
- 27:00Speaker 4: I can sit here and watch a football game now
- 27:03Speaker 4: and watching outside zone play a boring run that goes
- 27:07Speaker 4: for three yards in a cloud of dust, and I
- 27:09Speaker 4: sit there as a fan on a Saturday or a Sunday,
- 27:12Speaker 4: whether it's college or the NFL, and I look, somebody
- 27:15Speaker 4: will be sitting next to me and I go, freaking
- 27:17Speaker 4: guy didn't have his a placement in the right place.
- 27:19Speaker 4: His hand was too far inside, he can't reach that.
- 27:21Speaker 4: He's never going to get that. That ball's got to
- 27:23Speaker 4: cut back and it doesn't. So like, there's just certain
- 27:26Speaker 4: things like that that you see and that you learn
- 27:28Speaker 4: that are so ingrained because of how detailed Kyle Shanahan
- 27:31Speaker 4: is and like you see it, what purty you see
- 27:33Speaker 4: that when he has that play action fake and he
- 27:35Speaker 4: hits that back foot, like he knows where his eyes are.
- 27:38Speaker 4: He's trained, and there's just a way of you know,
- 27:42Speaker 4: training quarterbacks, especially in the NFL, that can you know,
- 27:45Speaker 4: everything looks like a little chaos out here, and if
- 27:47Speaker 4: you can dial it down and narrow it into this
- 27:49Speaker 4: much where your eyes are in the right place, that's
- 27:52Speaker 4: what Shanahan does so well. You get your eyes in
- 27:54Speaker 4: the right place that if you trust him and you
- 27:57Speaker 4: cut it off when you're supposed to and when your
- 27:58Speaker 4: feet tell you too, you're going to be really, really successful.
- 28:01Speaker 4: So it was a really cool experience for me to
- 28:03Speaker 4: be able to spend the year with them that I did,
- 28:04Speaker 4: and he reminds me a lot of Cliff Kingsbury as well.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Simon, can you name the fats. It's growing ticketing app
- 28:13Speaker 1: in the United States.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Game Time.
- 28:15Speaker 1: That's right, it's game Time. I love game Time for
- 28:17Speaker 1: two reasons. First, they still sponsor their show. Second, I
- 28:20Speaker 1: use game Time all the time. They have amazing last
- 28:23Speaker 1: minute deals, including pro and college sports. Speaking of which,
- 28:26Speaker 1: I'm opening game Time from my house here in Connecticut
- 28:30Speaker 1: right now. Look what I can get New York Yankees
- 28:34Speaker 1: this weekend less than forty bucks. I can also see
- 28:37Speaker 1: the Mets for less than ten bucks tonight. No matter
- 28:41Speaker 1: where you live, download the game Time app. Get out
- 28:43Speaker 1: has some fun this week. You deserve it. You can
- 28:45Speaker 1: redeem code favorites for twenty dollars off your first purchase.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Terms apply again. Just download the game Time app and
- 28:50Speaker 1: use code favorites for twenty dollars off your first purchase
- 28:53Speaker 1: last minute tickets. Those prices guarantee all right, Johnny, you
- 28:57Speaker 1: famously won the Heisman Trophy. You famously battled with the
- 29:03Speaker 1: NC double A. This week, the NC double A gave
- 29:07Speaker 1: back Reggie Bush his heisman. You were very outspoken about
- 29:11Speaker 1: him getting the heisman back and the challenges with the
- 29:14Speaker 1: NC double A. Give me your take on what happened.
- 29:17Speaker 1: I also liked that Reggie Bush has said he's still
- 29:19Speaker 1: suing the NC double A. Give me your take on
- 29:22Speaker 1: sort of how that drama ends from your point of view.
- 29:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I think just the whole thing is just and
- 29:31Speaker 4: its entirety is so amazing. I have I've, throughout this
- 29:35Speaker 4: process obviously been very vocal about Reggie and about my
- 29:40Speaker 4: desire and my want for me to see him get
- 29:43Speaker 4: his trophy back. So luckily last week I got to
- 29:45Speaker 4: go to a heis and summit down in Florida and
- 29:48Speaker 4: be with a lot of the guys as Reggie was
- 29:50Speaker 4: getting his trophy back. And what an amazing thing, What
- 29:54Speaker 4: a very cool experience to be a part of. Right,
- 29:58Speaker 4: A lot of people gave me credit for what happened,
- 30:02Speaker 4: and I sit here today and feel ecstatic, not for
- 30:08Speaker 4: myself for what was done, but for Reggie himself. You know,
- 30:11Speaker 4: there were a lot of things that came out, and
- 30:13Speaker 4: Reggie said himself like that was as close and as
- 30:16Speaker 4: low as I've ever been in my life when that
- 30:18Speaker 4: thing got taken away from me, when my heisman got
- 30:20Speaker 4: taken away from me. So I had empathy for Reggie,
- 30:23Speaker 4: you know, I had a soft spot in my heart
- 30:26Speaker 4: for a guy who had done so much for the
- 30:29Speaker 4: game of college football that wasn't allowed to be there
- 30:31Speaker 4: with us every single year, And I think it was wrong.
- 30:33Speaker 4: And I'm so thankful for the heismand Trust to be
- 30:36Speaker 4: able to come to a decision like that. I'm so
- 30:38Speaker 4: happy for Reggie to be able to walk into his
- 30:42Speaker 4: house again and see his trophy and be able to
- 30:44Speaker 4: do that, because I couldn't imagine putting myself in his
- 30:48Speaker 4: shoes and having to go through that. And the first
- 30:50Speaker 4: thing that I thought of whenever he got it back was,
- 30:54Speaker 4: you know, fuck the NCAA. Sorry for my language, Like
- 30:58Speaker 4: you know, they deserve every thing they have coming to them,
- 31:01Speaker 4: and it's only a matter of time until we see
- 31:05Speaker 4: the demise of the n c double A. Forever, I
- 31:08Speaker 4: will be sitting here with a bucket of popcorn in
- 31:10Speaker 4: my Heisman trophy right next to me, waiting for that
- 31:13Speaker 4: day that I see that alert.
- 31:16Speaker 1: You just mentioned something that was really interesting to me,
- 31:18Speaker 1: which I didn't I don't think I understood. You said
- 31:21Speaker 1: you were at a Heisman Trust meeting. So is that
- 31:26Speaker 1: like the Heisman House? Are there just like a bunch
- 31:28Speaker 1: of Heisman winners hanging out like what happens there.
- 31:31Speaker 4: You know, we we get a chance every year to
- 31:34Speaker 4: go to New York for the ceremony, and then really
- 31:36Speaker 4: outside of that, you know, we don't have a lot
- 31:38Speaker 4: of you know, interaction other than the guys that you're
- 31:41Speaker 4: kind of friends with in the in the in the
- 31:43Speaker 4: Heisman House, I guess. So, you know, this for us
- 31:46Speaker 4: is continuing to uh, continuing to keep our fraternity tight,
- 31:51Speaker 4: you know, continuing to get a chance to spend some
- 31:53Speaker 4: time around true legends of the game of college football.
- 31:58Speaker 4: The Heisman Trust itself does an amazing job for us
- 32:01Speaker 4: at you know, allowing some events for us to come,
- 32:04Speaker 4: you know, do things for charity. What our future looks
- 32:06Speaker 4: like as far as the Heisman Trophy, you know, there's
- 32:09Speaker 4: a lot of changes that are happening in college football
- 32:13Speaker 4: right now, and I think, you know, the Heisman Trust
- 32:15Speaker 4: is aware of that. I think each and every one
- 32:17Speaker 4: of us as members are aware of that, and collectively
- 32:20Speaker 4: as a whole, I think every one of us wants
- 32:23Speaker 4: the the Heisman to be everything that it's supposed to
- 32:28Speaker 4: be from you know, not just the trophy itself, but
- 32:34Speaker 4: what they do as far as giving back what they
- 32:35Speaker 4: do is a you know, heisman, you know, trust as
- 32:39Speaker 4: a whole, and you know they look to us for.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Ah, you know, a lot of input on that.
- 32:45Speaker 4: And luckily I'm one of the younger guys that gets
- 32:47Speaker 4: a chance to sit back and like I don't have
- 32:48Speaker 4: to you know, trust my opinion onto everything. I get
- 32:51Speaker 4: a chance to sit back and be around guys like
- 32:53Speaker 4: Archie Griffin who have won two of these things, who
- 32:55Speaker 4: have been around and been involved with the trophy a
- 32:59Speaker 4: lot longer than I. I'm very much on the younger
- 33:01Speaker 4: side of things, but you know, at the end of
- 33:03Speaker 4: the day, I feel each and every member. While some
- 33:07Speaker 4: guys are at times more important than others, each and
- 33:11Speaker 4: every member has a voice, and you know, it means
- 33:16Speaker 4: a lot to me. That trophy means a lot to me.
- 33:18Speaker 4: That every winner there means a lot to me, and
- 33:21Speaker 4: every person that's been involved with that trophy. It feels
- 33:23Speaker 4: like when I go back and see everybody that it's
- 33:26Speaker 4: twenty twelve all over again and I'm just walking across
- 33:28Speaker 4: that stage for the first time.
- 33:30Speaker 3: It's one of the biggest things I've ever got to
- 33:31Speaker 3: do in my life. You know, why wouldn't I take
- 33:33Speaker 3: it serious? Yeah?
- 33:35Speaker 1: It's interesting to me time I got one more follow
- 33:37Speaker 1: But you know, you never think about the Heisman Trophy
- 33:42Speaker 1: winners being buddies, right because it's an individual award, and
- 33:48Speaker 1: like you don't think about times when they would get together,
- 33:52Speaker 1: so and just thinking about sort of you know, they
- 33:55Speaker 1: have the commercial of the Heisman houg which is really funny,
- 33:58Speaker 1: but the idea that that kind of come right and
- 34:00Speaker 1: brotherhood actually exists. Is there like a Heisman winner text chain?
- 34:07Speaker 2: You are you with that liner?
- 34:09Speaker 1: And Reggie Bush, like, are you guys all just texting
- 34:12Speaker 1: each other about different things?
- 34:14Speaker 4: You know there might be I try my best and
- 34:18Speaker 4: to look at it from from my perspective, I think
- 34:20Speaker 4: it means differently to each and every one of the guys,
- 34:23Speaker 4: but for me. But for me, I think, you know,
- 34:27Speaker 4: when a guy wins it, I immediately get on Twitter or
- 34:29Speaker 4: Instagram and I reach out and I say congratulations, and
- 34:33Speaker 4: you know, try to create a relationship from.
- 34:34Speaker 3: The first aid that they walk across the stage.
- 34:36Speaker 4: It's what a lot of guys did with me whenever
- 34:38Speaker 4: I went to New York for the first time and
- 34:40Speaker 4: I won, and luckily I got a chance to go
- 34:42Speaker 4: back the next year and have some of those relationships
- 34:44Speaker 4: already in place. So for me, you know, I do
- 34:47Speaker 4: a job myself and my own right of reaching out
- 34:50Speaker 4: to the guys saying what's up, trying my best to
- 34:52Speaker 4: have a relationship with a lot of the guys that
- 34:55Speaker 4: are there. You know, it's tough to have it with
- 34:57Speaker 4: every single one over the years. We're all in different places,
- 34:59Speaker 4: different and ages, different things like that. But for me
- 35:02Speaker 4: and what I want to do, you know, I want
- 35:03Speaker 4: to be a guy who is open to anything that
- 35:07Speaker 4: these guys could ever need from me, and you know,
- 35:09Speaker 4: be a friend and a brother here with whatever I
- 35:12Speaker 4: could do.
- 35:13Speaker 2: The NFL obviously it's my first love. But there's no
- 35:17Speaker 2: cooler reward in sports than the heisman. The heisman is peak.
- 35:21Speaker 2: It's just everything about It's cool everything. The whole ceremony
- 35:24Speaker 2: to all the guys on the stage, like you just
- 35:26Speaker 2: talk about their brotherhood. Even when you go around and
- 35:28Speaker 2: you shake their hands, they all give you this look
- 35:30Speaker 2: of like you don't even know, like your whole life
- 35:33Speaker 2: is changed forever, like you're in now this brotherhood. So
- 35:38Speaker 2: I honestly warmed my heart knowing that you guys do
- 35:40Speaker 2: talk and get together like that because it's like you
- 35:42Speaker 2: guys are part of this really small group that only
- 35:45Speaker 2: know this life, how your life does change so much
- 35:48Speaker 2: from it. So just picking it back, picking back and
- 35:51Speaker 2: off the Heisman talk. You know, this time last year,
- 35:56Speaker 2: no one was talking Daniels like he was not someone
- 35:59Speaker 2: people really talktalking about for Heisman. And if you go
- 36:02Speaker 2: through the Heisman history like you Johnny when you won it,
- 36:05Speaker 2: like it's there's it's always these people that come out
- 36:07Speaker 2: of nowhere. Baker Mayfield came out of nowhere. Like that's
- 36:10Speaker 2: why we love betting the Heisman because you can get
- 36:12Speaker 2: people of fifty to one crazy long shot odds. Right now,
- 36:16Speaker 2: you're looking at the board this upcoming season, Johnny, is
- 36:19Speaker 2: the anyone that Pops offer you for the for being
- 36:20Speaker 2: someone that you want to bet for Heisman?
- 36:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's really tough, right, Like there's very
- 36:26Speaker 4: very few years where your favorite going into the preseason
- 36:29Speaker 4: is going to be the guy who comes out and
- 36:30Speaker 4: win it.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Wins it. It happens, but almost but almost.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Never really, Like you know, for for the years that
- 36:38Speaker 4: I've watched and that I've seen it, usually as.
- 36:40Speaker 3: Somebody from the back of the pack.
- 36:42Speaker 4: So I think there's a lot of like stellar, stellar
- 36:46Speaker 4: qbs right now in college football, guys who are going
- 36:48Speaker 4: to like have some unbelievable seasons and just looking at
- 36:51Speaker 4: it right now, I think Jackson Dart from Old miss
- 36:54Speaker 4: is a guy that I would keep an eye on
- 36:55Speaker 4: this year. I think him and Lane Kiffin are going
- 36:57Speaker 4: to be up to something really special. I think when
- 37:01Speaker 4: yours from Texas, you know, stuff that is being an
- 37:04Speaker 4: aggie over here, but you know, a good kid, a
- 37:06Speaker 4: great quarterback. I think he's going to make a lot
- 37:08Speaker 4: of noise. We'll see how they do their first year
- 37:10Speaker 4: in the SEC. You know, realistically, you need to probably
- 37:13Speaker 4: only have a couple losses on your schedule here unless
- 37:15Speaker 4: your numbers are that much, you know, exceedingly over everybody else's.
- 37:19Speaker 4: And then I like Jaalle Norro from Alabama. I think
- 37:22Speaker 4: this guy is going to come this year and come
- 37:24Speaker 4: back better than he was last year. He's an absolute
- 37:26Speaker 4: physical specimen. I think those are three guys right there,
- 37:29Speaker 4: all SEC guys that are going to battle for first
- 37:32Speaker 4: team All SEC, and I think you know they'll end
- 37:35Speaker 4: up probably getting a chance. One of those guys in
- 37:37Speaker 4: those three I think will end up in New York.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Jackson Dart sixteen to one at BET three six five.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Middle row quin viewers are eight to one at BET
- 37:49Speaker 1: three six five. It has become the kind of award
- 37:52Speaker 1: where you basically need to be in the big ten
- 37:55Speaker 1: of the SEC in order to win it. We saw
- 37:57Speaker 1: that this year with Jaydeen, Daniel and Michael Pennix. When
- 38:03Speaker 1: you look at Milroe, you know, Milroe was forty to
- 38:06Speaker 1: one to go number one in the draft next year.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Now he's down to nine to one. When you are
- 38:14Speaker 1: a quarterback at that stage of development, think back to
- 38:18Speaker 1: your time in college. What is it like when you
- 38:22Speaker 1: can start to feel a coach giving you a little
- 38:25Speaker 1: bit more confidence, which is what he went through this
- 38:28Speaker 1: year and similar to what happened to you when you
- 38:29Speaker 1: were in your freshman.
- 38:30Speaker 4: Year getting all the games under your belt and then
- 38:33Speaker 4: come back to next year not having to worry about,
- 38:35Speaker 4: you know, the little butterflies you have before the game,
- 38:37Speaker 4: the little nervousness about how to run this system and
- 38:39Speaker 4: this operation. Your off season from from year one to
- 38:43Speaker 4: year two very much goes into detailing, so you go
- 38:45Speaker 4: into the detail of what your offense is being able
- 38:48Speaker 4: to run at easier signals, This that your operation runs
- 38:51Speaker 4: really really smoothly as you come back, you know, especially
- 38:54Speaker 4: when you have the quarterback coming back. That's the catalyst
- 38:57Speaker 4: of the whole thing. College football offense is for the
- 38:59Speaker 4: most part, only run through a really really good qb.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Are There's some out there that run the ball really
- 39:04Speaker 4: well when it goes to a running back, of course,
- 39:06Speaker 4: but the majority of the time it's a quarterback liven
- 39:09Speaker 4: quarterback driven position. And to have a guy that had
- 39:11Speaker 4: a lot of you know, success in year one coming
- 39:14Speaker 4: back into year two, you would think that the operation
- 39:16Speaker 4: only gets smoother, all.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Right, before we let you get out of here. You
- 39:20Speaker 1: were famously a dynamic football player in college won the Heisman.
- 39:25Speaker 1: As we discussed, give Simon and I give us, give
- 39:29Speaker 1: us your favorite most dynamic college football players you've personally seen,
- 39:35Speaker 1: sort of your five faves for lack of a better term,
- 39:38Speaker 1: guys that you've seen in our generation, say, going back
- 39:42Speaker 1: the past twenty years, because the game changes so much, right,
- 39:45Speaker 1: so like the way you were playing it is different
- 39:48Speaker 1: than the way you know people were playing it in
- 39:50Speaker 1: the nineteen seventies. People will go back and say, you know,
- 39:53Speaker 1: Archie Griffin is one of the greatest comfortball players ever
- 39:56Speaker 1: different game. So let's think about it in the context
- 39:59Speaker 1: of today's game.
- 40:01Speaker 4: I think guys who changed the game, A lot of
- 40:03Speaker 4: guys who were the most fun that electric that I
- 40:05Speaker 4: got to watch.
- 40:06Speaker 3: I think Reggie Bush is very very high up at
- 40:09Speaker 3: the top of that list.
- 40:10Speaker 4: I think the guy who finished number two in the
- 40:12Speaker 4: highs than that year is just an absolute electric player
- 40:15Speaker 4: who was a guy who I modeled a lot of
- 40:17Speaker 4: my game after. But Vin Young was a guy who
- 40:20Speaker 4: was an absolute legend. I loved watching Tevon Austin when
- 40:23Speaker 4: he was at West Virginia.
- 40:25Speaker 3: That guy really really really moved the needle.
- 40:28Speaker 4: A guy that a lot of people forget about that
- 40:30Speaker 4: I love to watch was the Anthony Thomas at Oregon
- 40:34Speaker 4: around my time was an absolute stud. And then you know, last,
- 40:40Speaker 4: the guy you have to give so much credit to
- 40:42Speaker 4: for changing the way that the whole quarterback game was
- 40:45Speaker 4: like really played as far as like the era that
- 40:48Speaker 4: we're in now, right, I think I can't have a
- 40:52Speaker 4: list of exciting college football players without having Lamar Jackson
- 40:56Speaker 4: on that list.
- 40:57Speaker 1: That's right. You forget about the Anthony Thomas.
- 41:00Speaker 4: Beast, an absolute beast just watching him in some of
- 41:03Speaker 4: the plays that he made in Oregon was just crazy.
- 41:07Speaker 4: Another guy that's forgot about who was in my class,
- 41:09Speaker 4: who was amazing at Ohio State.
- 41:11Speaker 3: I loved watching Braxton Miller.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I thought Braxton Miller, he was the number one quarterback
- 41:15Speaker 4: coming out of my class, ended up going to Ohio State.
- 41:17Speaker 4: There's still a spin move that he hit that I
- 41:20Speaker 4: still can play in my head any day.
- 41:21Speaker 3: That the guy was just an absolute freak that he
- 41:24Speaker 3: was at Ohio State.
- 41:25Speaker 4: And college football is so hard, man, there's you can't
- 41:29Speaker 4: you know, negate it to five, especially over twenty years,
- 41:32Speaker 4: Like over the last twenty years, there's been probably you know,
- 41:36Speaker 4: fifteen twenty guys that have truly truly moved the needle.
- 41:41Speaker 3: And it's not just a quarterback, not just a running
- 41:43Speaker 3: back receiver. Like the college game.
- 41:46Speaker 4: The beauty of it is you get to see so
- 41:48Speaker 4: much raw talent, you know, against you know, every single Saturday.
- 41:52Speaker 4: So it's it's an unbelievable game, one that I love
- 41:55Speaker 4: watching and you know, excited to see what this next
- 41:59Speaker 4: season up brings to.
- 42:00Speaker 1: No one ever, says Joe Alt. You know, the guy's
- 42:05Speaker 1: six ' eight three, twenty five. He's putting his hand
- 42:08Speaker 1: in the right place he's getting his his helmet. If
- 42:11Speaker 1: the proverbial stripe is in the right spot. The guy's massive.
- 42:15Speaker 1: I mean, look, did you see the draft when he
- 42:17Speaker 1: stood up and then he had to lift his dad
- 42:19Speaker 1: out of the couch because his dad. I mean, come on,
- 42:23Speaker 1: let's give Joe Alt some credit.
- 42:26Speaker 3: You got to.
- 42:27Speaker 4: He's also sitting there with about thirty eight thirty nine
- 42:30Speaker 4: million dollars a day, so you know, I think he's
- 42:32Speaker 4: just going to be chilling, probably having a barbecue or something.
- 42:35Speaker 4: That's that's what the whole lineman pretty much like to do.
- 42:37Speaker 4: They're they're a little bit more laid back group than
- 42:40Speaker 4: the than the skill players.
