- 0:05You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:08Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:10On our podcast, the goal is not just to share our sermons, but
- 0:14to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:16what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:19The sermon you're about to listen to comes from our Spring
- 0:21Mixtape 2025 non series sermon series rather than a series, and
- 0:27this will be a collection of sermons based on what God is
- 0:29leading us to preach on this spring.
- 0:31You can find more information about our church at

- 0:40Hello. Today's scripture is Hebrews
- 0:51Chapter 9 verses one through 10. Now the first covenant had
- 0:55regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary.
- 0:59A Tabernacle was set up in its first room, where the lampstand
- 1:02and the table and the table with its consecrated bread.
- 1:06This was called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a
- 1:09room called the Most Holy Place, which had the golden altar of
- 1:13incense and the gold covered Ark of the Covenant.
- 1:17This ark contained the gold jar of Manna, Aaron's staff that had
- 1:20budded, and some stone tablets of the Covenant.
- 1:24Above the ark were the Cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the
- 1:27atonement cover. But we cannot discuss these
- 1:29things in detail now. When everything had been
- 1:32arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer
- 1:36room to carry on their ministry, but only the high priest entered
- 1:40the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without.
- 1:43Blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins of the
- 1:46people, had committed an ignorance.
- 1:49The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most
- 1:52Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first
- 1:56Tabernacle was still functioning.
- 1:58This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that
- 2:01the gifts and sacrifices being offered we're not able to clear
- 2:05the conscience of the worshipper.
- 2:07They're only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial
- 2:10washings. External regulations applying
- 2:13until the time of the New Order. This is the word of God for the
- 2:19people of God. While they're leaving, I'll
- 2:24share quick testimony from this weekend where we took some of
- 2:30our seniors in high school on a backpacking trip through the
- 2:34Pine Barrens, covering 17 miles on foot to be surrounded by
- 2:40God's creation and to reflect on high school and this next season
- 2:46of life that they have ahead of them.
- 2:49And when we were planning this, they said what happens if it
- 2:52rains? Well, the entire week leading up
- 2:56to our hike, it was scheduled to rain from the moment we landed
- 3:00on trail to the moment we got back to the car.
- 3:03And we persevered. And literally up until Friday
- 3:08morning, that was still the case.
- 3:09We landed sunshine, no rainbows, but sunshine.
- 3:14And we were able to hike, get to our campsite, set up everything,
- 3:18and we got all settled and cozy. And then we got texts from
- 3:21people that we were in a tornado warning, which I figured if the
- 3:28Lord took us up and I was with Jesus, Jill could not get a hold
- 3:32of me afterwards so I was good. But none the less we were able
- 3:39to sleep through the night as it rained and winds blew and by the
- 3:42time we were hiking out in the morning it was already sunshine
- 3:45again. And so the Lord provided just
- 3:48beautifully through that time in multiple ways, but that is just
- 3:52one that I'd like to share this morning that I'm alive post all
- 3:56of that and we made it back most of us anyway this morning.
- 4:02Our scripture talks about the old way of doing things and
- 4:08sometimes we like to think more about the old in days, right?
- 4:12Even our slide for this service for the sermon series is a
- 4:17cassette tape, which you may think that our youth do not
- 4:20know, but apparently cassette tapes are growing in popularity
- 4:24thanks to Stranger Things. But my grandfather actually has
- 4:29a part to play in the creation of the cassette tape, which I
- 4:33don't think Scott knew before he made that the illustration for
- 4:40our sermon slides. My grandfather worked at RCA and
- 4:44they had these invention competitions at work where
- 4:47whoever, like created the coolest thing, got $250, which
- 4:52back in the late 50s was a big deal.
- 4:56And him and his friend worked on condensing magnetic strips that
- 5:02they used for memory, you'd think for film or other
- 5:04recordings, but to get it smaller and to carry more
- 5:07memory. And so they won that $250 so
- 5:12that RCA could keep all of the rights and use that later on to
- 5:16make cassette tapes. But with that, it's not the
- 5:20oldest way in which we are capable of listening to music.
- 5:24I learned recently that 150 years ago you could not listen
- 5:31to music if it was not being played directly in front of you,
- 5:35a very foreign thing to many of us.
- 5:39The first time that you were able to record and play back
- 5:42music was Thomas Edison's phonograph, which I believe we
- 5:46have a picture of, which he would put a tin foil canister in
- 5:50there that could play back to you 2 minutes of music.
- 5:54And the very first song recorded and played was Mary Had a Little
- 5:58Lamb, which Mary never told me about.
- 6:01Anyway, this then grows and grows and changes over time and
- 6:08as we see through the various formats.
- 6:10We have records. We have 8 tracks.
- 6:14CDs. Anyone in here have 8 tracks at
- 6:16some point? I'm curious.
- 6:18OK, we have a few handfuls. Incredible.
- 6:21OK have any of you in the front rows seen an 8 track in person?
- 6:27Only one. OK anyway the biggest jump
- 6:31because if you remember records a track, cassette, CD, you get
- 6:35one album right? This is why they created
- 6:38Greatest Hits album, so you could get the best of the songs
- 6:41and not have to switch out all of your music.
- 6:44Or you would get compilation albums so you could listen to
- 6:47different artists next to each other instead of just one person
- 6:52over and over. And so the one that changed it
- 6:54all was the iPod, where you could store in our minds as much
- 6:59music as you possibly could and play and choose and do whatever
- 7:02you want with it. And so we went from 2 minutes in
- 7:05a tinfoil can to our phones that can carry up to two years of
- 7:10music on them. And that's without the Internet,
- 7:13right? You get the right passwords and
- 7:16you can listen to almost everything that's been recorded
- 7:19digitally in this time and age. And Spotify itself is adding 100
- 7:25days worth of music every single day.
- 7:28You will never finish Spotify. And so my grandfather was always
- 7:33interested in the next technological improvement.
- 7:37He was always on the forefront of technology and he would say 2
- 7:41main things. One, if he was very impressed by
- 7:44something in technology, he would always say what will they
- 7:47think of next? And secondly, whenever he came
- 7:51across an issue that technology did not solve yet, he would
- 7:55always say, there's got to be a better way.
- 7:59And luckily for those in the Old Covenant and living in the Old
- 8:04Testament, there is a better way and there was something next.
- 8:08And that's what we're going to talk about this morning.
- 8:11But first, let us pray. Lord, I thank you so much for
- 8:18this opportunity to gather and worship you.
- 8:21We ask that your Spirit would guide and lead the rest of our
- 8:25time together and prepare us to fulfill your will as we go out
- 8:30in Jesus name, Amen. So this conversation around the
- 8:39ceremonial laws that we read about and the scripture come up
- 8:44not just only in church, but also with my friends from
- 8:47outside of church, because when they start getting interested in
- 8:50Christianity, they say, well, I'm going to go straight to the
- 8:53source. So they decide to read the Bible
- 8:56from the beginning to the end. And I always forewarn them
- 8:59that's probably not the best route if you've never opened a
- 9:01Bible before, because you're going to get to Leviticus and
- 9:04Deuteronomy and you're going to have a lot of questions and
- 9:07maybe be a little discouraged when you read all the different
- 9:11laws that are happening. And then they come to me and
- 9:13say, Jeremy, you're Christian and you don't do anything that's
- 9:17listed here in the ceremonial law.
- 9:20I said, well, that's why I told you, you should start with
- 9:23Jesus, because we are Christians.
- 9:25We are called to be Christ like, and Jesus changed everything.
- 9:30Jesus is the perfect sacrifice that covers all of the
- 9:35sacrifices talked about in the Old Testament, right Under the
- 9:39old system, it was the blood of goats and calves that could
- 9:42cleanse people's bodies from ceremonial impurity.
- 9:46And Jesus becomes the new high priest.
- 9:50He enters into something greater than the Tabernacle, the holy
- 9:54place that Joanna was reading about.
- 9:57He's able to enter into heaven something far greater than
- 10:00anything that we could have created ourselves.
- 10:04And not only does he is he capable of entering there, but
- 10:08he's able to go on our behalf and secure our redemption
- 10:12forever. So just think how much more the
- 10:16blood of Christ will purify our consciences, right?
- 10:19The law was unable to purify the consciences of those trying to
- 10:24follow it in the Old Testament. How much more can Christ's blood
- 10:28purify our consciences from our sinful deeds, so that we can
- 10:33worship the living God? For by the power of the Holy
- 10:37Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice
- 10:41for our sins. And through Jesus there's a new
- 10:45covenant between God and humanity.
- 10:49For Christ died to set everyone free from the penalty of sin.
- 10:56Under the first covenant, the the old system could not cover
- 11:01this. And yet through Christ, through
- 11:05his blood, it is possible. And in the old way of doing
- 11:09things, blood was sprinkled on virtually everything, right?
- 11:13And Moses says in Exodus that this blood confirms the covenant
- 11:17the Lord has made with you. For without the shedding of
- 11:21blood, there is no forgiveness. And many people inside the
- 11:24church, outside the church, ask me regularly, why is death and
- 11:29blood involved in cleansing, involved in getting us to
- 11:34salvation? It seems kind of morbid and
- 11:38yucky. And why isn't there more of a
- 11:40sunshine and rainbows kind of way to achieve those things?
- 11:45And Scripture points us to the example of a will, except
- 11:49there's a lot less paperwork, thanks be to God.
- 11:52But when you write out your will, you are setting forth
- 11:56promises of what's going to happen after your passing.
- 11:59You are coming into a certain sort of covenant, and yet all
- 12:03the things that you write out, all of the things that you sign,
- 12:07do not come to fruition until after you die, right?
- 12:12And so as much as all of our youth would like to receive
- 12:16their inheritances now, very much like the prodigal son, we
- 12:21have to wait until people pass away.
- 12:24They only goes into effect after the person's death.
- 12:28And in order for salvation to be offered, Christ's death was
- 12:32necessary for the new covenant to be made.
- 12:36And after his death, Jesus entered into heaven itself to
- 12:40appear before God. And he did not enter heaven one
- 12:44time. And then every year he had to go
- 12:47back to heaven on on our behalf, just like the high priesthood,
- 12:50right? They had to go every single
- 12:52year, kill another animal, take the blood, all of this.
- 12:56He only had to do it once because he was the perfect
- 12:59sacrifice. And this one sacrifice was able
- 13:03to remove all sin. I'm very grateful personally
- 13:10that we no longer have to kill animals on our way to church.
- 13:13Can I get an Amen for that? Tina, you have more access.
- 13:17That's not fair. So when my grandfather said
- 13:21there's got to be a better way in regards to technology at
- 13:26least, right? It's always changing and people
- 13:27are always striving to get the new best thing.
- 13:31But in regards to removing our sin that separates us from God,
- 13:36the best answer is and always will be Jesus.
- 13:40Because the old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow,
- 13:45a dim preview of the good things to come.
- 13:48It wasn't the good things themselves and that is why when
- 13:52Jesus came into the world, he said to God, you did not want
- 13:57animal sacrifices or sin offerings, but you have given me
- 14:02a body to offer. You are not pleased with burnt
- 14:05offerings or other offerings for sin.
- 14:08Then he said, look, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is
- 14:13written about me and the Scriptures.
- 14:16So Jesus himself says that God didn't want all of those
- 14:20different offerings, even though that's what the law of Moses
- 14:24requires of his people. Jesus cancels the first covenant
- 14:28in order to put the second into effect.
- 14:32And the Holy Spirit, a testify, testifies to this desire in the
- 14:36Old Testament in Jeremiah 31. For it says, this is the new
- 14:40covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the
- 14:44Lord. I will put my laws and their
- 14:46hearts, and I will write them on their minds.
- 14:50And it says I will never again remember their sins and lawless
- 14:55deeds. And when sins have been
- 14:58forgiven, there's no need to offer any more sacrifices.
- 15:04You may also remember that when my grandfather witnessed
- 15:06something new that he didn't believe possible prior, he would
- 15:10exclaim, what will they think of next?
- 15:15And so after witnessing what Jesus has done, what did God
- 15:19think of next? God's will was and is for us to
- 15:26be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Christ.
- 15:31God wants his people to be faithful.
- 15:34And so because of the blood of Jesus, we can boldly enter into
- 15:40heaven. Feel like a lot of times when we
- 15:42have the imagery of going up to the gates, we're usually very
- 15:45shy and timid and worried about like, did we do enough?
- 15:50Well, it's not all about what you've done.
- 15:54It's because of the blood of Jesus we can boldly enter into
- 15:58heaven. He's provided a new way for us
- 16:00to live. And since we have Jesus who
- 16:03rules over God's house, we can go right into the presence of
- 16:07God with sincere hearts, fully trusting Him.
- 16:13For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ's
- 16:16blood to make us clean. We need to hold tightly without
- 16:22wavering to the hope that we have, for God can be trusted to
- 16:26keep His promise. Usually we can't be trusted to
- 16:29keep our end and let us think of ways to motivate one another
- 16:35into acts of love and good works.
- 16:38Because if we deliberately continue sinning after we have
- 16:40received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice
- 16:45that can cover those sins. There is only the impending
- 16:51terrible expectation of God's judgement.
- 16:55If you remember in the Old Testament, anyone who refused to
- 16:58obey the law of Moses was put to death.
- 17:01So just imagine the punishment for those who ignore what Jesus
- 17:06did and have treated the blood of the covenant which made us
- 17:10holy as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted the
- 17:15Holy Spirit who brings God's mercy to us.
- 17:19I mean, how often does someone die so that you can live right,
- 17:25let alone a perfect person? And yet we can treat this is
- 17:30just a common occurrence in another piece of the Daily News.
- 17:35But we can't get distracted by the new and enticing ideas of
- 17:38the world that tries to offer an attempt at saving you from your
- 17:43problems or providing you purpose or hope.
- 17:47Instead, you should know that there are better things waiting
- 17:49for you that will last forever. So do not throw away your
- 17:53confident trust in the Lord. Remember what it brings you.
- 18:00What we need now is a patient endurance so that we can
- 18:03continue to do God's will. It says in Hebrews 1038.
- 18:09And my righteous ones will live by faith, but I will take no
- 18:13pleasure in anyone who turns away.
- 18:17If we want to be God's righteous ones, we need to live by faith.
- 18:21And to live by faith, we need to know what faith is, right?
- 18:25It's not just believing that he exists, but Scripture tells us
- 18:30that faith shows the reality of what we hope for.
- 18:35It is the evidence of things we cannot see.
- 18:38By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at
- 18:42God's command, that what we see now did not come from anything
- 18:46that can be seen. Even under the old covenant, God
- 18:51used imperfect people to demonstrate what faithfulness
- 18:55faithfulness looked like. We have examples like Enoch, who
- 19:00by faith was taken up to heaven without dying.
- 19:04It says that he disappeared because God took him, for before
- 19:09he was taken up he was known as a person who pleased God.
- 19:13And it is impossible to please God without faith.
- 19:18Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and
- 19:22that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
- 19:27It was by faith that Noah built the ark to save his family from
- 19:32the you know the story. Noah by faith built the ark to
- 19:40save his family from the flood. He obeyed God even when God was
- 19:45warning him about something that had never happened before.
- 19:50It was by faith that Abraham obeyed.
- 19:52When God called him to leave his home and go to another land that
- 19:55God would give him as his inheritance, he went without
- 19:58knowing where he was going. Luckily on our hiking trip, we
- 20:02had a general idea of where we were going.
- 20:06But just like Abraham. We were in tents, we were in a
- 20:10place that did not belong to us. We were foreigners to that
- 20:15place. And yet Abraham went in faith
- 20:19that God would provide the land in which he promised.
- 20:23Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal
- 20:27foundations, a city designed and built by God.
- 20:32All these people died still believing that God what God had
- 20:36promised them. They did not receive what was
- 20:39promised in their lifetime, but they saw it all at a distance
- 20:43and welcomed it. They agreed that they were
- 20:45foreigners and nomads here on earth.
- 20:49Obviously, people who say such things are looking forward to a
- 20:52place they can call their own. If they wanted to be where they
- 20:56were from, they would just return back to where they were
- 20:58from. But they were looking for a
- 21:01better place, a heavenly homeland, just as we should
- 21:04yearn for in our own hearts. That is why God is not ashamed
- 21:10to gull them, to have them call Him their God.
- 21:15He prepared a place for them, just as He prepared a place for
- 21:19us. And there are dozens of
- 21:21examples, not only in the Old Testament, the New Testament,
- 21:24but also throughout Christian history of people that lived by
- 21:29faith. And sometimes the results of
- 21:32this faith were incredible and unprecedented.
- 21:36They were able to overthrow kingdoms, to rule of justice.
- 21:40They received what God had promised them.
- 21:43They were able to shut the mouths of lion, quench the
- 21:47flames of fire, and escape death by the edge of the sword.
- 21:52Their weaknesses were turned to strength, as we talked last week
- 21:57about talked about last week. And others in the faith, sadly,
- 22:02were tortured, refusing to turn from God in order to be set free
- 22:07from their tortures. If you go to Mexico City, there
- 22:11is an official Museum of torture in downtown.
- 22:15We are not taking the mission team there, but if you were to
- 22:18visit, you would see that about half of the torture devices were
- 22:23created and used for people of faith and so can come from a
- 22:30lineage of those that did not. Let them.
- 22:33Let that deter them from holding on to truth and trusting in the
- 22:38things that are promised. They place their hope and a
- 22:41better life after the resurrection though they were
- 22:44tortured, mocked, put in prison, put to death, Some even live
- 22:49their entire lives in destitution, oppressed and
- 22:52mistreated. All these people earned a good
- 22:56reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received
- 23:00all that God had promised. For God had something better in
- 23:04mind for us so that they would not reach perfection without us.
- 23:10And since we have many witnesses of the faith in this room,
- 23:14hopefully how many of you have been encouraged by someone else
- 23:17in this room? 0 We'll have to work on that.
- 23:21You got to get to meet more people in here.
- 23:24Even if that's not the case. We have all of those in
- 23:27Scripture and throughout church history that have showed us what
- 23:32living a holy life can look like and involves putting aside all
- 23:38of our own desires, all of the things of this world that try to
- 23:43put us away from focusing on God's will.
- 23:47And that's why we can not only look on Jesus in a metaphorical
- 23:50way, but look at his example as he was on the cross enduring the
- 23:57pain for us. He didn't care about how it
- 24:01looked, how it felt, though it was not great.
- 24:05He did it none the less because of the joy waiting for him in
- 24:10heaven. And in our context, we aren't
- 24:13risking our physical death. I hope we're not risking our
- 24:16physical death normally on a regular basis, but we need to
- 24:19put aside ourselves when we don't line up with what God
- 24:22desires for us and have faith that it will lead us to joy
- 24:27everlasting. Last week we talked about who we
- 24:31are, who Scripture says we are, and it talks about us being
- 24:35God's children, right as a parent and as getting to learn
- 24:41from many parents that have parented before me.
- 24:44If you let the kids do whatever they want whenever they want,
- 24:48and it's probably not best for those kids, would we agree with
- 24:51that You need to work with teenagers more?
- 24:54Come on over to youth group. But no, if we let them do
- 24:58whatever they want whenever they want, it is not good.
- 25:01Discipline is required, and as a parent, I try my best to
- 25:06discipline well, though that may not always be the case.
- 25:11And yet we can trust that God's discipline is always good for us
- 25:16so that we may share in His Holiness.
- 25:19The holy God of the Israelites, the one that the angels are
- 25:23singing, holy, holy, holy. We have the opportunity to share
- 25:30in His Holiness, not by our great righteous deeds, but
- 25:35because of what He's done and because of His discipline that
- 25:40we should not only accept when it occurs, but hopefully look
- 25:44forward to if we know that that's the end result.
- 25:48Even if discipline is not enjoyable at the moment, we know
- 25:52that we will eventually see the results of living the way that
- 25:56God has instructed us to. And lastly, as we talk about
- 26:02these things, it can seem like a big arching umbrella over these
- 26:07topics, and it may almost seem too simple of what we're called
- 26:12to do. And I believe what we're called
- 26:14to do is fairly simple, but that doesn't mean it's always easy.
- 26:19And so desiring God's will for our lives every single day is
- 26:23what's going to change our perspective of our Christian
- 26:26walk, hopefully to be more in alignment with how he wants us
- 26:31to view it. Because if we carry the guilty
- 26:33consciences of those that were under the Old covenant, it's
- 26:38easy to live out of those guilty consciences.
- 26:41We can strive to carry our cross, which we're called to do
- 26:46by our own power. And that means that we need to
- 26:50bear the brunt of it, that we need to do it well so that we
- 26:53can earn that salvation. So that if we do good enough in
- 26:58this world, we will be able to earn our salvation and get that
- 27:02ticket to heaven, or at least our version of what we hope
- 27:05heaven is like. And so our actions can be rooted
- 27:10out of this desire for what we want to get out of our good
- 27:14choices. And we put all of this pressure
- 27:17on us instead of taking not only the aid of the Holy Spirit to
- 27:21accomplish God's will for our lives, as we talked about last
- 27:25week, but having our actions rooted out of the truth that
- 27:30Christ paid it all on the cross and His blood has cleansed us.
- 27:36You cannot cleanse yourself, right?
- 27:40They talk about the good man going to heaven, but no man is
- 27:44fully good and so it's only by his grace and by the sacrifice
- 27:49Jesus has made for us that we are able to go before our
- 27:53Heavenly Father and go into the ultimate holy place.
- 27:59Secondly, need to remember that our faith that we would have
- 28:05give me one second buffering. That we would have faith not
- 28:12only that God exists, but that his promises are true and that
- 28:18he has always been faithful to fulfill them.
- 28:21Even if we don't see how that's possible in our personal lives
- 28:25or the ever changing world around us.
- 28:28That we would constantly remind ourselves in times of
- 28:31frustration and despair of who God is and what He's promised
- 28:37us. Not reacting out of defeat and
- 28:40fear, but acting in victory. Not our own victory, but the
- 28:45victory that we have in Jesus. Would you pray with me, Lord?
- 28:56Would we walk in your ways? Would we live holy lives?
- 29:06Would you empower us through Your spirit to do so?
- 29:09To live at peace with everyone so that others can see Your
- 29:13Holiness through us? Would we encourage one another?
- 29:19Would we be diligent to make sure that no bitterness grows
- 29:23within us? That we would keep on loving
- 29:26each other as brothers and sisters?
- 29:29Would we remember to show hospitality to strangers,
- 29:33remember those who are being mistreated, and empathize with
- 29:36their pain as if it was our own? We ask that the marriages in
- 29:41this room would be honoring to you and a reflection of your
- 29:44faithfulness. Would we be satisfied with what
- 29:48you've provided us and not seek after the things of this world
- 29:52that we can trust that you will never fail us or abandoned us?
- 29:57We know you as our Lord. We know that you are our helper.
- 30:03We ask that we would not fear the things of this world, but we
- 30:06would bring it to memory of who you are and what you've
- 30:09promised. Would we remember those who have
- 30:12lived holy lives before us and think of all the good that has
- 30:16come from their lives and follow the example of their faith?
- 30:20We know that your Son is the same yesterday, today and
- 30:25forever with all these new inventions and ideas, that you
- 30:29are still the most relevant and the most important thing to ever
- 30:34exist. May our strength come from your
- 30:37grace and this Communion Sunday. May we be grateful for Christ's
- 30:44bloodshed for us and remember that this world is not our
- 30:49permanent home that we are looking forward to a home yet to
- 30:53come. And let us offer through Jesus a
- 30:56continual sacrifice of praise to you, for you alone are worthy.
- 31:03We're thankful that we no longer have to do blood sacrifices at
- 31:06church. May we not forget to do good and
- 31:11to share with those in need, because we know that these are
- 31:15the sacrifices that please you. Amen.
