- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the twenty first Sunday after Pentecost with commemoration of Saint Helarian of Gaza, October 21 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of today's saint, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, After the era of martyrs to whom the church had exclusively reserved the honors of public worship she began to raise to the altars the servants of God who had distinguished themselves by their heroic virtues although they had not won the glory of shedding their blood for Jesus Christ. St. Helarian in the East and Saint Martin in the West are at the head of the list of saints known as confessors.
- 1:05A native of Palestine, Saint Hilarion studied at Alexandria and desiring to embrace a more perfect life he left all to follow Jesus. He heard of Saint Anthony's holiness and went to see him in Egypt. The Saint kept him for two months in order to train him to a life of penance and contemplation. He then delivered to this boy of 15 years of age a hair shirt and a garment made of skin saying persevere to the end my son and thy labor shall be rewarded by the delights of heaven. Halarian returned to Palestine and founded monastic life there.
- 2:00After having built several monasteries for which he made laws as Moses had done of old for God's people He retired to the island of Cyprus so as to escape the crowd of admirers attracted by his brilliant virtues. He died a holy death at the age of 80 about the year of our Lord 372. Saint Jerome wrote his life. Also commemorated today are saints Ursula and her companions. At Cologne says the Roman martyrology, the birth in heaven of Saint Ursula and her holy companions who were massacred by the Huns out of hatred for the Christian religion and their virginal purity.
- 2:59Several are buried in this city. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Everything, O Lord, is at thy disposal.
- 3:23None can thwart thy will. Heaven and earth, and all that lies beneath heaven's vault, are thy creation, and thou art Lord of them all. Blessed are they who pass through life's journey unstained, who follow the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 4:04Everything, O Lord, is at thy disposal none can thwart thy will. Heaven and earth, and all that lies beneath heaven's vault, are thy creation, and thou art Lord of them all. The Collect, let us pray. O Lord, keep thy household with ever watchful care, we pray thee, so that under thy protection it may be freed from all adversity, and zealous in well doing, to the glory of thy name. Through Christ our Lord.
- 4:53Amen. Commemoration of St. Hilarion. May the intercession of blessed Hilarion the Abbot commend us unto thee, we beseech thee, O Lord, so that what we cannot acquire by any merits of our own we may obtain by his patronage. A commemoration of Saints Ursula and companions.
- 5:23Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, to reverence with unceasing devotion the victories of thy holy virgins and martyrs Ursula and her companions, that whom with worthy minds we cannot celebrate, we may at least approach with lowly homage through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, draw your strength from the Lord from that mastery which his power supplies. You must wear all the weapons in God's armory if you would find strength to resist the cunning of the devil.
- 6:29It is not against flesh and blood that we enter the lists. We have to do with princedoms and powers, with those who have mastery of the world in these dark days, with malign influences in an order higher than our own. Take up all God's armor then so you will be able to stand your ground when the evil time comes and be found still on your feet when all the task is over. Stand fast. Your loins girt with truth.
- 7:11The breastplate of justice fitted on, and your feet shod in readiness to publish the gospel of peace. With all this, take up the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fire tipped arrows of your wicked enemy. Make the helmet of salvation your own and the sword of the spirit, God's word. The gradual. O Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation.
- 7:58Before the hills came to birth, before the whole frame of the world was engendered, from eternity to eternity, thou art God. Alleluia. Alleluia. When Israel came out of Egypt, the sons of Jacob heard no more a strange language. Alleluia.
- 8:29A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, here is an image of the kingdom of heaven. There was a king who had resolved to enter into a reckoning with his servants and had scarcely begun the reckoning when one was brought before him who was 10,000 talents in his debt. He had no means of making payment, whereupon his master gave orders that he should be sold with his wife and children, and all that he had, and so the debt should be paid. With that the servant fell at his feet and said, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee in full.
- 9:30And his master, moved with pity for him, let the servant go, and discharged him of his debt. So the servant went out, and met with a fellow servant of his, who owed him a 100 pieces of silver, whereupon he caught hold of him, and took him by the throat, and said, Pay me all thou owest me. His fellow servant went down on his knees in entreaty. Have patience with me, he said, and I will pay thee in full. But the other refused.
- 10:18He went away and committed him to prison for such time as the debt was unpaid. The rest of the servants were full of indignation when they saw this done and went in to tell their master what had happened. And so he was summoned by his master who said to him, I remitted all that debt of thine, thou wicked servant, at thy entreaty, was it not thy duty to have pity on thy fellow servant as I had pity on thee? And his master, in anger gave him over to be tortured until the debt was paid. It is thus that my heavenly father will deal with you if brother does not forgive brother with all his heart.
- 11:19The Offertory There dwelt in the land of Huss a man called Job, innocent and upright, and one that feared God. Satan asked Lev to tempt him, and was allowed by the Lord to have his will with all that belonged to him, and with his bodily health. All Job's possessions and children he destroyed, and afflicted his body too with grievous sores. THE SECRET. In thy readiness to forgive, O Lord, accept this sacrifice.
- 12:08For it is thy will that through it thyself art appeased, and we restored and saved, through Christ our Lord. Amen. A commemoration of St. Halarian. May the holy abbot Halarian, we beseech thee, O Lord, obtain by his prayers that the sacrifice laid on thy holy altar may profit us unto salvation, a commemoration of Saints Ursula and companions.
- 12:47Regard, we beseech thee, O Lord, the gift offered upon thine altars on this festival of thy holy virgins and martyrs, Ursula and her companions, that as by these blessed mysteries thou hast conferred glory upon them, so thou wouldst vouchsafest thy pardon, through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Common Preface Just it is indeed and fitting right in for our salvation that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts.
- 14:19The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 14:40Longing for thy saving help, I put my trust in thy word. When will my wrongs be redressed? Knaves will be plotting against me still. Come to my aid, O Lord my God. The post communion.
- 15:04Let us pray. We have been seeking the food of immortality, O Lord, and implore thee that with its savour still on our tongues we may with pure hearts continue to pursue it. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. A commemoration of Saint Hilarion.
- 15:32May the pleading of blessed Hilarion, the Abbot, for us, as well as the reception of thy sacrament, protect us, O Lord, that we may both share in the glory of his works and receive the help of his intercession. A commemoration of saints Ursula and companions Grant us, we beseech thee, O Lord, by the intercession of thy holy virgins and martyrs, Ursula and her companions, that what we take with the mouth we may receive with pure minds through our Lord Jesus Christ thy son who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen.
- 16:40Let us bless the Lord. Saint Halarian, pray for us. Saints Ursula and companions, pray for us.
