- 3:33[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, there's a lot going on in this clip.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: This is the type of guy who I think would like have a booth at like a Marca Driscoll man's conference.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Oh gosh.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, all right, and I'm gonna play this for you right now and we'll explain to our listeners what we're seeing in here.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_04]: Or sin ever committed was not in the Garden of Eden.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_04]: The first sin ever committed was actually committed in heaven.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_04]: And a lot of you don't know that.
- 4:03[SPEAKER_04]: You know the three archangels.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_04]: You know who one of them was, right?
- 4:06[SPEAKER_04]: It was Lucifer.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_04]: And Lucifer actually committed the first sin, which was pride.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_04]: Lucifer looked in the mirror, saw how great he was, how beautifully was, how amazing he was.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_04]: And then he went around and told all the other angels.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, I think I'm gonna be better than God.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, I think I'm better than God.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, I think I can be better than God.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_04]: And what did he do?
- 4:25[SPEAKER_04]: He got in those angels years.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_04]: Who's getting in your ear right now?
- 4:30[SPEAKER_04]: The devil did it in heaven and then what happened?
- 4:32[SPEAKER_04]: He rebelled and he caused war all throughout heaven.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_03]: Okay, so I wonder if I caught, is this the pot caught it calling the kettle black I want to walk around with a shirt off to every, he was just being braggadosious.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you don't say do you do say so for for for our listeners who are just just just listening to this and not watching what what you have here is a man.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_01]: uh... who is you know doing some sort of like motivational i don't really like pseudo preaching pseudo teaching i don't know what the motivation is here but the the very like the most distracting thing about this is not his energy right not not the like i would say like hurt my mid two thousand way of of shooting this video right very low light it looks like it's it's it's the opening scene of saving private ryan like
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: But the main thing you notice here is this man is completely shirtless, completely naked from I'm assuming the way stop.
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: We do not see his waist down, but I'm going to assume he has pants on.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_01]: And he's got like, dog tags?
- 5:49[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, around this neck tag, whether I'm with the service or not, I will get that's questionable.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_01]: on which like the the microphones is is on and I'm here's thing kudos were kudos are do my man is ripped my man is yoked he whether that is from steroids or natural we will question that
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of veins.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of veins.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: We've got we've got some liver King action happening here in the chestal region.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely some vanage happening on my man, but the completely shirtless yoke out of his mind looks like he just got out of a tanning bed.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_01]: And all of this he is deciding to
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: obviously, you know, use his platform, use his body, use the gifts that God gave him, right, to talk to us about Satan and Lucifer, and you know, and how that was the first sin.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: So interesting, Jack, how much would it take for you to do a promo video?
- 6:55[SPEAKER_01]: Like this.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: In the exact same.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_01]: We're taking this shirt off.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: We're, you know, I'm having to pull out your dog tags from the army couple and couple of milly.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it ain't gonna be pretty.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'll tell you that.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, I definitely don't have to be like this.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_01]: See, of this man, I mean, he's, yeah, he, if confidence and an eight type person, you know what, he'd make a great act 29 pastor though, he really would.
- 7:23[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is like, I feel like every acts 29 lead pastor wants to be this guy.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is, this is the model.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: This is the guy they put on like, they tape his picture.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: They take this frame to the mirror.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_01]: And they like, they look at it every morning.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_01]: They're like one day, one day.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: Just one more Iron Man.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: Just one more, just one more.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_01]: And some more CrossFit competition.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_02]: One more CrossFit competition.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_02]: This guy.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_01]: This is the dude.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so it is true.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_01]: It is true.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: Um, all right.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_01]: Well, fun with that.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_01]: Jack, we're going to
- 8:01[SPEAKER_01]: The video that you sent me after I had saved the I love the videos so much the real.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_01]: So funny I'm just gonna play it this one listeners.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_01]: There's you don't need it.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_01]: You don't need to hear it Or you don't need to see it.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's all audio.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_01]: That's what's funny.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_01]: So we're gonna.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's just guys speaking out some truth He's speaking truth man.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: My man is speaking truth here.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go
- 8:22[SPEAKER_00]: Stop dropping your kids off at children's church then go on a brunch.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yo, I'm calling you out, Mr. Reese, Miss Franklin, and Tunisia.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: I find that very a group of people that drop their kids off at church just to go have brunch with their girlfriends.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: What is wrong with y'all?
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: Then be picking them up late.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Service ended at 130.
- 8:41[SPEAKER_00]: You still had Chapman and Kirby drinking my Moses.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord is against you.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: You come back to smell like cocktails and hoooka.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: While the youth ministry have to shut your son up six times because he's trying to tell the story about Moses.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: Y'all ain't right.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: Especially the ones that go to find the praise.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: Stop.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: Be delivered.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: the Lord is against you.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_02]: I love that.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_02]: Stop.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_02]: Be delivered.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_02]: The Lord is against you.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo, boo
- 9:42[SPEAKER_01]: Like, come on, that's not what it's for.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I trash, I'm sorry, that's what I do.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_01]: He, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he,
- 10:12[SPEAKER_01]: All right, Jack, we're getting into an awesome topic today.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about the Lord's supper, the sacrament, the Eucharist.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, let's not take it too far.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_01]: We can redeem that word.
- 10:24[SPEAKER_01]: We can redeem that word.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_01]: Dude, we're having trouble in offer deeming the word sacrament.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_03]: So let's let's let's let's let's let's step at a time.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: One step at a time here.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_01]: Let's take what we can get, right?
- 10:35[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, no, we're talking about the Lord's supper, and specifically,
- 10:39[SPEAKER_01]: We're talking about the frequency with which the Lord's supper should be observed.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_01]: Now, there's a lot of different opinions on this particular topic, and there's a lot of, I think for some people, I would say, some very fervent and well-meaning emotion that goes
- 11:05[SPEAKER_01]: often feel logically deep right i think a lot of people have opinions on this and uh and uh usually uh often isn't coming from i would say
- 11:19[SPEAKER_01]: a biblical standpoint, right?
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: So we're gonna seek to talk about the frequency in which the Lord Supper is observed and do so as soundly as we can, right?
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously with scripture as well as some sound theological arguments here.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_01]: So out from the gate, I will say this, we will tip our hat, we will not bury the lead.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_01]: Both Jack and I are of the opinion
- 11:48[SPEAKER_01]: and conviction, I would say.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's not just an opinion.
- 11:52[SPEAKER_01]: I would say for us it's a conviction that the Lord's Supper is meant to be observed on a weekly basis.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: On the Lord's Day, by the Lord's people.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we believe.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that there is a lot of good and sound reasons for that.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: That is not obviously the position that a lot of people take.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_01]: Especially you'd find I think.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: In some Baptist circles and some of the more non-denominational, I think you see a lot of, you know, once a month, right, you have your, usually on the, usually on the first Sunday or the last Sunday the month, that's communion Sunday.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_01]: And you have that going for you.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: And some of the more I would say kind of older, maybe more fundamentalist churches, you have them having it a completely separate service once a month.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not part of the Lord's Day gathering.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's separate from that.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: That's another way that some churches choose to observe this command.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, it is a command to take the Lord's supper.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to talk about that today and we're going to do our best to convince you, Nick, convict you of why you as as a church should be taking the Lord's supper on a weekly basis.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: So it might as my hope that you would enter this look, if you if you were already agree, right, and you're already of that same position, I'm not going to say, you know, leave the
- 13:30[SPEAKER_01]: you know, hopefully you can still be encouraged in the position that you find yourself in and maybe be able to find some ways to maybe explain that position and perhaps in some ways that you haven't thought of before, but if you are not of that position.
- 13:46[SPEAKER_01]: And maybe you're getting a little bristle right now or maybe you're you're you're starting to think through the reasoning why perhaps you guys observe it monthly instead of weekly I would ask you to hang with us right ask you to hang with us and and hear what we've got to say and maybe at the end of the episode we've given you some some food for thought right some fodder for the brain right so I'll say from the outset before I throw it over to Jack and hear how his church does it.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: We all agree that the Lord Supper is commanded to be observed, that's baseline biblical understanding.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think we all all Christian orthodox denominations and churches, I would say would.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_01]: and should agree with that statement.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the frequency in which that Lord supper is observed, there's there is some grace there, obviously, right?
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to call churches that are not observing it weekly.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to call them out as being in sin.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_01]: I would say that I disagree with it, but we have to be very careful when talking about secondary issues.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: uh... or i would say application of primary issues right uh... that that we have we have grace there and we allow liberty of conscience to rain because we believe in that is reform baptists pretty big part of our confession uh... and uh... so from the outset uh... that we do not believe that this is a sin issue uh... but it does not mean that is not important and not something that should be considered and worked through biblically because just because
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: something is not primary in terms of its importance, does not mean that it's not important, and does not mean that it should not be considered greatly, and at times reconsidered to make sure that, you know, obviously we're always reforming, Semper Reframanda, right?
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: We're always taking our convictions and our belief in holding them up against scripture to make sure that they work.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_01]: right and that they're consistent.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: So that's what our attempt is to do with this topic today.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_01]: So Jack, before we hop in real quick, real brief, give us just a real quick understanding of how you guys at your local church observe the Lord's supper.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we do it every week, it's towards the end, it comes after the preaching of the words, so the preaching of the word happens, and then we have kind of like a transition into kind of, I would say worship and response.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_03]: So we sing another hymn or song, and then we respond with the Lord's Supper.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_03]: And that's really a place, so we have, so we do it to where we have five tables.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_03]: And they're kind of like chest high tables.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_03]: Sausser, the big kind of steel saucer pans.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_03]: You have, we have both serve wine and juice.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_03]: and gluten-free bread, and then I, and then usually myself, if it's not myself, there's usually guys who are members, guys who are leaders in the church will be leading in that.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_03]: And usually it's like a very, how can I say it?
- 17:03[SPEAKER_03]: It's more homo-ledical thinking about the Lord Supper.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: So for instance, this last Sunday.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_03]: we went over John chapter one and I think it was chapter one.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_03]: It could have been in a chapter two versus one basically the wedding at Cana.
- 17:21[SPEAKER_03]: We talked about Jesus' first miracle, turning water into one, right?
- 17:28[SPEAKER_03]: So we did a lot of biblical theology like our pastors and especially us in community groups did a lot of biblical theology background on what wine means and the Old Testament going
- 17:39[SPEAKER_03]: When it symbolizes and then
- 17:42[SPEAKER_03]: I basically said, hey, you know, this is a time, the Lord's upper is a time in which Jesus himself gives a spiritual nourishment.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_03]: I'm sure Josh can talk about the convictions as well too, but I would say that I would say I'm putting words into Josh mouth, Josh's mouth, but I could probably say he's on the same wavelength, the saying, we both believe that Jesus is with us spiritually when we're taking the Lord's
- 18:11[SPEAKER_03]: Basically, when that happens, we can have a better articulation of what's happening as well too.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_03]: The family of God is gathered around the Lord's table.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: Almost, it's kind of like in a sense what will happen when we go and be with Jesus.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_03]: This small preview of coming attractions is that your local church every Sunday, not only that, but it's there to give you spiritual nourishment.
- 18:35[SPEAKER_03]: The Lord Jesus did this in a special way, right?
- 18:38[SPEAKER_03]: He gave us the water, or he gave us the wine, and He gave us the bread in order to symbolize His sacrifice on the cross in our place for our sins, but also in a way where He basically shows how He's abiding with us, and we can abide with Him.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_03]: And so I think it's a way in which grace is dispensed to the people, but really how I articulate that is like, hey, Jesus is, you know, we're holding these cups of wine or juice and Jesus took the ultimate cup of wrath upon himself and he actually gave us the cup of blessing.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_03]: That is a very biblical theology-rooted concept of the couple blessing being wine being a blessing, but Jesus taking on the cup of wrath, that the prophets speak about.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_03]: And so, and then I'll do a short prayer, and then we'll basically take the bread first, and then the wine or the juice, and then I just give a short kind of sending out.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_03]: Um, but yeah, a lot of it has to do with that you're coming to the table being nourished weekly in order that you may go out with the gospel that you're kind of armed up that the supper is this feast that kind of helps you to go out through the rest of your week in order to face it and share the gospel with other people.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_03]: So that's how we go into it.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_03]: Um, there's
- 20:05[SPEAKER_03]: I can only think of like a couple different ways that we do can be in that different than that every Sunday, but it's like maybe Easter
- 20:14[SPEAKER_03]: trying to remember I think Easter we did do we did we did the sacraments double time last Easter we did lords lord supper and baptisms I do I love that when those line up yeah yeah yeah it can I think that the lord supper is so instrumental in showing that preview of what heaven is going to be like with our brothers and sisters but not only
- 20:38[SPEAKER_03]: the preview, but it's a current reality to your Jesus is with us spiritually, giving us spiritual nourishment, giving us and dispensing grace to us in that time.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_03]: We're literally communing with him spiritually, right?
- 20:52[SPEAKER_03]: And we're doing it through this way in which he gave us, which is eating and drinking.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, I think those are important concepts to what we do.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's, and I, and I really, I try and take everybody.
- 21:08[SPEAKER_03]: So usually we have a section.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_03]: I have a section of it about maybe like, I'm trying to think maybe 20ish people gather around my table.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_03]: And there's five tables around kind of the area that we're in that auditorium in that school.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, we're trying to get everybody there to show how,
- 21:28[SPEAKER_03]: gathering around a table is symbolic is meaningful to show that you're part of the family of God.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're going to see different practices in terms of how communion is is.
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: is, you know, particularly administered, depending on the church, right?
- 21:49[SPEAKER_01]: But again, I think there's grace in that, right?
- 21:51[SPEAKER_01]: And there's, you're going to have differences in that, but we would argue that, you know, whatever, whatever that means is, or whatever, the, you know, the, the, the particulars of the administration of it are, we do think it should be weekly.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_01]: We do think it should happen on a
- 22:08[SPEAKER_01]: the Lord's Day service.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: We're convinced and convicted of that, right?
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I've got four just four quick points and then we'll get into some objections that I think would be good to good to chat through as well.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_01]: But
- 22:23[SPEAKER_01]: But for reasons for why to do it weekly, the first one I got is, well, because I believe the Bible says so.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_01]: I believe we see that in the early church, we see that church history, we see that in Acts chapter 20 when it's talking about on the first day of the week, right?
- 22:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's the Lord's Day.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: They were breaking bread together.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: That's the Lord's supper.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's what it's talking about in 1st Corinthians chapter 11.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: Paul is giving the warnings to the Corinthians because they were obviously abusing the Lord's supper and not.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: not engaging with it in a correct and biblical manner.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_01]: And you see the warning that he gives to them.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: He says, when you come together, it's not the Lord's supper that you're eating.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: You're doing something else.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're getting drunk.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: You are abusing the sacrament, right?
- 23:12[SPEAKER_01]: But there's this expectation and this assumption that when you are getting together, you are observing the Lord's supper.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_01]: If we're going to make an argument even off of just inference, I think the scale's tip
- 23:33[SPEAKER_01]: completely one way.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: And that would be that you take it weekly.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: I think that was the assumption.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's what we see in church history, right?
- 23:42[SPEAKER_01]: We see that it was something that was priority that the church came together and broke bread.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe that that's just talking about sharing a meal together.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_01]: Although that's also important, right?
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: We're Baptist.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: We love politics.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's good, good fellowship,
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: part of what they would do is administer what their Savior had instituted and they would do that when they gathered on the Lord's Day, corporately, together, right?
- 24:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:16[SPEAKER_01]: So obviously, Scripture is our foundation, Scripture is our source, it's our authority.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_01]: We believe that we see it in Scripture.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: And therefore, we're convinced that we should follow and do thusly, the way that it is done in Scripture.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: And just as we don't have the right to define for ourselves how the Lord's day is supposed to look, right?
- 24:36[SPEAKER_01]: We've talked about the regular difference while in the Norman of Principle before.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: It's the same when it comes to the Lord's supper.
- 24:43[SPEAKER_01]: I believe that we see clearly that it was done on a weekly basis.
- 24:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that there's other reasons for that and we'll get into those here in a minute.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_01]: But again, even if you're just going to make someone says, well, it's not specifically saying that's like, okay, sure, even if we want to make that argument, if you want to make it from inference like I said.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_01]: I think the scales, I think, flatly fall on one side.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think you can at all make the case that it was somehow influenced.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_01]: Inferent.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately thing.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't think you can do that.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_01]: So bare minimum inference, I think it calls for this, but I'd say it's even stronger than inference.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's explicit in what it says in the scriptures there.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, if that's not enough to convince you that the Bible says to do it, all right, stick with us.
- 25:33[SPEAKER_01]: We've got a couple more here.
- 25:35[SPEAKER_01]: The second point that I've got here is that when we take the Lord's supper on a weekly basis, it provides a practical way for us to remember what was just delivered to us from the pulpit.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: And what I mean by that is this, right?
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: every sermon, no matter where you are in Scripture, should have the emphasis being the gospel.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, you can and should as a preacher have that motive, that desire, that drive anywhere you are in the Bible, whether it's the very easy passages that you'd find in the New Testament or you're in the depths of the law, right, in the Old Testament.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: your job is to show Christ.
- 26:21[SPEAKER_01]: Where is Christ?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: We're not preaching morals.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: We're not preaching ourselves.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: We're not preaching our opinions.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_01]: We're showing the people in the scriptures, especially if you confess and believe in covenantal theology.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_01]: Where is Jesus?
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: That is the point.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_01]: Show me Jesus.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_01]: Give me the gospel.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_01]: And observing the Lord's supper weekly.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_01]: then gives us the ability.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_01]: And I would say the blessing of those truths being reinforced to us yet again practically in the observance of the sacrament.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then what I just heard proclaimed to me about my sinfulness and Christ's sufficiency.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm going to confess that yet again tangibly.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: with my hands, right?
- 27:09[SPEAKER_01]: I'm picking up the bread, I'm taking the wine and I'm observing the Lord's supper and I'm being reminded yet again of what was just proclaimed to me from the pulpit.
- 27:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's important.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that just increases the health,
- 27:24[SPEAKER_01]: of the church and increases the focus, the laser-pointed focus of what we are called to preach and how we are called to apply it.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_01]: And ultimately, it is through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I find taking the Lord Sephora on a weekly basis just helps affirm and confirm what is preached.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I would absolutely say that it's sometimes we use the words, you know, you're coming to the table with open hands of faith, so that they may be filled with the elements in which the Lord provides to remind you of the gospel.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_03]: It's more of a, it's more of a year,
- 28:04[SPEAKER_03]: your senses of hearing or being impacted in the words they service now your senses of taking and eating or being impacted as well too.
- 28:14[SPEAKER_03]: So exactly.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:16[SPEAKER_01]: So not only does it reinforce what's preached right whatever is there, but but I would say even clearly and just going to it's somewhat the same but I do think that it's it's there is there is a distinction it reminds people of the plain gospel.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: Right, so not only what was preached and how, you know, Christ is sufficient in what we are hearing from the pulpit and how he is, you know, met us in whatever it is that we have heard, but it reminds us of what the supper was instituted for it to remember the broken body of Christ and the blood spilt on the cross, the new covenant being confirmed and assured and our sins being broken death being broken Satan being conquered and that Christ not only has died.
- 28:58[SPEAKER_01]: but has risen, right?
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: And all good Lord's supper presentations, if you will, should include that, right?
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: It must remind people of the gospel and the full gospel, right?
- 29:16[SPEAKER_01]: And this is why, Jack, that I'm not a
- 29:21[SPEAKER_01]: a, uh, uh, uh, uh, what's the word I'm blanking.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_01]: Memorialist, I'm not a memorialist when it comes to the Lord's supper, right?
- 29:29[SPEAKER_01]: Because I believe that it is much more than simply remembering the death of Christ.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's definitely part of it.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_01]: But the death of Christ,
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: is no victory.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: If he did not race, yeah, and continue forth, right?
- 29:48[SPEAKER_01]: And Christ raising is no comfort unless he's coming again to bring me with him, right?
- 29:56[SPEAKER_01]: So when we present the Lord's supper to the people, I'm convinced that we should not do it in a mere memorialist way.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, remember the death of Christ.
- 30:10[SPEAKER_01]: But give your people the hope that comes from the victory of Christ.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_01]: What is that death accomplice?
- 30:16[SPEAKER_01]: And what did that death point to, right?
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: Christ rising from the dead three days later.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_01]: And then Christ coming again at the end of the age, when he
- 30:26[SPEAKER_01]: when he has promise to set all things right and there will be no more tears.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: There will be no more sadness.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_01]: All evil will be broken under the feet of our Savior.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_01]: That is what the Lord's supper proclaims.
- 30:38[SPEAKER_01]: You're telling me you don't want to be reminded of that every single week.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to you don't want to leave the doors of the church with that wind in your sails.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: My friends, there is nothing greater than ending the Lord's day.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_01]: right, hearing the word preach, singing the songs and partaking in the body and blood of Christ and remembering death has been crushed.
- 31:05[SPEAKER_01]: And my savior is coming again to take me home.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_01]: There is nothing better than that.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_01]: The Lord Supper reminds us of the gospel.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_01]: Jack from anything on that before are we hopped to the final one.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_03]: No, it's too.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_03]: I do it in a way too, or when I'm at the table presenting the Lord Supper, like it is a way in which this, you know, this should energize us to have more people around the table.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_03]: to share the gospel and bring more people around the table.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_03]: Hopefully, Christ would bring more people around the table that he would save.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_03]: That's kind of the kind of wind in your sales is your talking about his all too.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 31:43[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_01]: I got caught preaching there.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_01]: I got to calm down.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: I got to settle down.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_01]: Get an amped up.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_01]: All right, fourth and finally, I would say,
- 31:53[SPEAKER_01]: One of the greatest practical reasons to take the Lord's supper on a weekly basis is because it provides you spiritual nourishment for the week, right?
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: We are in this world, traversing this world, six days out of seven, it's a lot of time.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: And the vast majority of people come into the doors of the church weary and broken, distressed,
- 32:21[SPEAKER_01]: in one way, shape or another.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_01]: We need the spiritual nourishment to that comes from the Lord's supper, the sacrament handed down to us by our Savior to remind us that, yes, the world is dark.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, sin is great.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, there is grief and sadness that comes from living in this world.
- 32:45[SPEAKER_01]: But Christ is alive.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: Mm-hmm.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_01]: And He has conquered.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_01]: And He is king.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_01]: And when you eat that bread and you drink that wine, there is a spiritual, I believe, supernatural nourishment that happens, that the Lord uses the sacraments that He has handed down to bless and to sustain His people for another week.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's not some magical mystical thing, right?
- 33:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's not transubstantiation lies the Catholics believe, but it is not void of spiritual nourishment.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: Christ is spiritually present there, not physically, but spiritually.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: And when we feast on that, when we feast on his body, and we drink his blood, we receive nourishment in that we are reminded of what is true, and the Lord uses that sacrament.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_01]: provide such blessing to His people and strength for another week.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_01]: And it reminds us that our rest and our hope is not found in this world.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's not found in our efforts, but it's found in the body and the blood of Jesus Christ, broken and shed for us.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_01]: And there is nourishment and rest
- 34:09[SPEAKER_01]: We need that every single week.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_01]: I need that, every single, I need that reminder.
- 34:16[SPEAKER_01]: Because I know the week that I had.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_01]: I know the struggle that I had.
- 34:20[SPEAKER_01]: I know the ways that I wore it against my flesh and failed this week.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_01]: I know the ways that this world, this sinful world that we live in, has ground my face into the dust.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_01]: But the Lord's Supper, man, it reminds me.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: that this world is not my home, that Jesus is King, and that there's hope found even in the dust, because God can take the dust and create something beautiful out of it.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: And the Lord supper reminds me of that, right?
- 34:53[SPEAKER_01]: And I love the, I love our confession, the 1689 chapter 30, specifically paragraph seven, when it speaks on the Lord supper.
- 35:03[SPEAKER_01]: It says this, it says worthy receivers, outworthy partaking of the physical elements in this ordinance, do so then inwardly, by faith, really, and indeed, yet not carnally and corpally.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_01]: but spiritually receive and feed upon Christ crucified and all the benefits of his death, the body and blood of Christ being then not corporally or carnally, but spiritually present to the faith of believers in that ordinance as the elements themselves are to their outward senses.
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: I really like that.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_01]: So that's saying, yeah, we're not Catholic.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: We don't believe that Christ is killed yet again.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_01]: For our sins, we believe in confess once for all, but they are not void of spiritual blessing and nourishment.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_01]: And I am convicted that the people of God need that reminder and that nourishment every single time they gather on the Lord's day, they need it and they need to go out, nourished and replenish spiritually to live in this dark world that the Lord has called us to
- 36:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, put, man, can't argue with that.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we've got a little bit of time.
- 36:23[SPEAKER_01]: I want to just get into some objections that some people have.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I think they are well meaning in in their objections, but I do think that that they I do think that they don't they don't do well enough and objecting to cause my position to shift.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_01]: So one of the objections that we often hear as well.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: If we take the Lord's supper every week, won't that lesson, it's important.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: It won't that become common and normal to us, right?
- 36:55[SPEAKER_01]: Won't that lose its, it'll cease being special, right?
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: And again, I understand that argument.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: I understand where it's coming from.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_01]: What I would say is that I believe you can,
- 37:12[SPEAKER_01]: You can make that argument against anything on the Lord's Day, right?
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: You can make that argument against the preaching, as well we preach every week aren't we afraid that it's going to become dull and common, right?
- 37:31[SPEAKER_01]: We sing every Sunday aren't we afraid that people are going to just go through the motions with that?
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: How about prayer?
- 37:39[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 37:41[SPEAKER_01]: You can make that argument with anything on the Lord's day.
- 37:44[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 37:45[SPEAKER_01]: And there is a way in which, yeah, that can happen in our hearts with anything.
- 37:51[SPEAKER_01]: It is on us, as I think God's people, to guard our hearts and our minds against that, in any aspect of the Lord's day.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_01]: Because, yeah, you could fall into that trap with anything.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_01]: could you not, right?
- 38:11[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's important to understand and important to remember, right?
- 38:15[SPEAKER_01]: Some people, you know, make the claim that, yeah, if it's only once a month that it'll be more special, it'll mean more.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I would just say this, and I'll throw it over to you, Jack.
- 38:24[SPEAKER_01]: After I say this for final thoughts, I would say it's a means of grace that God has given to His people, it should be ordinary and regular.
- 38:33[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: Just as preaching is, just as every other aspect is with the Lord's Day is that it's meant to be ordinary.
- 38:42[SPEAKER_01]: And not an ordinary meaning, it's ordained.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: And it's meant to be regular, regularly practiced.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: Um, so I understand where they're coming from with those arguments.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I don't think that it, I don't think that it hits the mark in terms of being being enough to remove the blessing that it would be from the people.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: I would rather shepherd through those things and walk through those things, um, in how they're presented, how they're received versus, uh, removing it all together.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_03]: I mean,
- 39:18[SPEAKER_03]: I can I can understand and you got to remember to I think that we're impacted by so much of history as well to right sure so we look at communion through the lens in America through the teetotler movement through the temperance movement through a bunch of different movements that I think had.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_03]: bad or in different ways of experiencing alcohol adjacent things?
- 39:47[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_03]: So people might think that impacts the view of Kimi Nguyen I think as well too.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_03]: I think just the way in which
- 40:00[SPEAKER_03]: We're just not, we can say that we're, a lot of people say that we're liturgical, but I think for the most part people don't think in liturgical terms.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_03]: So people think of holidays, you know, like President's day, the day that we're recording is somewhat special, right?
- 40:21[SPEAKER_03]: And it'll happen once a year.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_03]: So people can think about that in that way, but it's like,
- 40:30[SPEAKER_03]: and he wants you to experience that weekly, don't, don't withhold that from your local church if you're a baster.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, give them the benefits, the spiritual nourishment that comes through setting up the table and and basically having people partake of the Lord's upper that way.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_03]: So
- 40:52[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I don't.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_03]: I can understand it in a certain sense of like the frequency of it.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_03]: It just loses its, you know, whatever, patina.
- 41:00[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, sure.
- 41:02[SPEAKER_03]: But to me, it feels I need.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_03]: It gives me more reliance on the Lord.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_03]: If I say that I need him, and I'm looking forward to the Lord's up every week.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_03]: I think it, I think it, it starts to build a greater dependence upon him.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and I wouldn't make the argument of consistency there, right?
- 41:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like, you watch football multiple times a week.
- 41:23[SPEAKER_01]: Does that get old for you?
- 41:25[SPEAKER_01]: True, very true, right?
- 41:26[SPEAKER_01]: You're watching baseball all the time.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_01]: You're engaging in sports.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_01]: Does it lose it's like you still engage in it you still eat three times a day right right I mean you play video games every night You watch movies all the time you watch TV shows probably multiple times a week We're talking about once a week here and you engage in things multiple times a week that don't lose They're specialness otherwise you wouldn't you wouldn't do them so
- 41:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think, well, meaning those, those arguments are, I don't find them to be very effective because if we're just going to be consistent with that, well, you get, you know, one sports event a month.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_01]: That's just, people will engage, like people will, will, will, will, will, it will be special
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: if you make it.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I would argue with with grace that if the taking the Lord supper once a week causes it to lose its effectiveness for you, that's not a problem with the frequency.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_01]: That's a problem with how you are receiving it.
- 42:43[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because there's many things that you engage in multiple times a week that you keep going back to just fine.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, right?
- 42:51[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not a problem with the thing.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_01]: It's a problem with you, my friend.
- 42:54[SPEAKER_01]: And again, please receive that with grace and humility.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_01]: But I just, I don't think that, I don't think that dog hunts.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't, I don't think I don't find that to be in a very effective argument, right?
- 43:06[SPEAKER_01]: But again,
- 43:07[SPEAKER_01]: There is grace in this, and it's not mean that there cannot be some gentle brotherly prodding, which is what I hope this episode is, but yeah, yeah, I think the frequency of the Lord's supper does matter.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: It does matter.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_01]: And I think you see the blessing with your people when you are observing it frequently and correctly.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: So, Jack,
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we got.
