- 0:01Welcome to Rick and that Michelle chick.
- 0:03I'm that Michelle chick. And I'm Rick.
- 0:05Welcome. So let's discuss stalkers in
- 0:09this episode, which I don't know about you, but I've had a few.
- 0:13Yeah. Have you?
- 0:15Yeah, I'm, I'm sure I have. But so one of the things we
- 0:18talked about earlier about how a fact of great female disc jockey
- 0:21is a diamond, you know, it's hard to come by.
- 0:23Well I know that compared to the men, I'm sure women get way more
- 0:27stalkers than the men do. Right, which is why having fake
- 0:33names for us is probably a very good thing in that regard.
- 0:38Absolutely. That's that's a good reason to
- 0:39have a fake name. Absolutely.
- 0:40Yeah, which we can discuss fake names later if we have enough
- 0:43time. I feel like you and I have
- 0:44enough stalkers that we could probably almost fill this hour
- 0:47so. We'll, we'll, we'll see.
- 0:49Yeah, I'll have. To I have to jog, I have to jog
- 0:51my memory so. OK, well my first stalker, I
- 0:55don't know if you could call him a stalker, but it was my first
- 0:59time dealing with something like this.
- 1:03It was when I was working part time at KX Double D doing the
- 1:06overnight weekends and at that time we were in this old single
- 1:12wide trailer with an addition. I mean, just this rickety
- 1:16rundown building and there was a window next to the door and the
- 1:23door would be, you know, locked after business hours obviously.
- 1:28And for radio stations, there is a doorbell that lights up a
- 1:32light so that we know that someone is at the door to go
- 1:35answer it. And if you, you know, were busy
- 1:41or didn't see this light, we all learned that we could slide this
- 1:45window open and then reach in and unlock the door and get in.
- 1:52OK. Yes, so and, and a lot of us did
- 1:56it all. I think we just started doing
- 1:58it. I, I don't even think we would
- 2:00buzz the door. We would just slide the window
- 2:03open, unlock the door and go in. And I was working a shift and my
- 2:09then boyfriend, now my husband Jay at the time had been out
- 2:13with his friends and he decided to stop by and say hi.
- 2:17So it was probably around I'm, I would guess one 1:30 AM and he
- 2:23rang the buzzer and I was busy. So I didn't, I wasn't able to
- 2:28answer the door right away. And for some reason, he realized
- 2:32that the front door was unlocked.
- 2:36So he came inside and he discovered a guy that was
- 2:40standing in the hallway. And at the time the building was
- 2:45set up, so there were windows all the way through.
- 2:48So there was the reception window, the AM studio was
- 2:53encased in windows and then a window into the KXWD studio
- 2:57where I was. So this guy was able where he
- 3:02was standing, he was able to see me, but I could not see him.
- 3:07At Scary. Yeah, who knows how long he had
- 3:10been there? My husband asked him, Who are
- 3:14you? And this guy just bolted out the
- 3:16front door. It was super freaky.
- 3:20We don't know who the guy was. It never happened again, thank
- 3:23goodness. And after after that, they put a
- 3:27stick in the window so that we can no longer slide the window
- 3:31open to unlock the door. So that's my first kind of dip
- 3:39into the pool of slightly stalkers, and I have another one
- 3:42that was a little bit more serious.
- 3:43But do you want to tell a story? And then I'll tell my serious.
- 3:46Stalkers. Yeah, yours is a scary one, man.
- 3:48Yours is like. This is an even better one, my
- 3:51next one. Oh my gosh, yours is like movie
- 3:54of the week on TV. The the D, the DJ that got
- 3:57stalked or whatever that would make.
- 3:58Yeah, they're going to get they're going to get Patty Duke
- 4:01or they're going to get one of those.
- 4:02They're going to get Eve Plum for Brady Bunch to play you
- 4:05basically because. Oh, is that who you say?
- 4:08Well, remember when they would do the cheesy TV movies of the
- 4:11week or whatever, and so you'd have, you know, old sitcom stars
- 4:16or whatever that can't get a gig, you know?
- 4:18And I think what was it? Was it Patty Duke?
- 4:20I mean, it's kind of like the Hallmark Channel now where it's
- 4:22always like Lindsay Lohan Lacey. Charbet from Perth.
- 4:27Yeah, thank. You that's yeah, she's on all
- 4:29all those I love Kelly Martin those kind of you know, the the
- 4:33movie of the week at the radio station with Kelly Martin
- 4:35playing you basically and getting stalked.
- 4:38That's that's a crazy story, so. OK, your story go.
- 4:41So here's one thing that you learn and I don't, I know we
- 4:43haven't talked about it yet, but just as our voice or we, just as
- 4:49we are not what people perceive us to be on the radio, what we
- 4:52perceive the listener to be is also the double edged sword.
- 4:56So my first radio station working at KCLK in Clarkston,
- 4:59WA, I was 18 years old at the time.
- 5:01And this, this person kept calling all the time and she had
- 5:05a great voice. And so, and I was, oh, OK, well,
- 5:09she's got a great voice. And so she would call in and
- 5:10make requests and we would talk blah, blah, blah.
- 5:13Well, So what happened one night I thought, you know what,
- 5:16because I was single at the time, I thought, you know what,
- 5:18I'll just ask her out. Never.
- 5:20You already know, you already know how this is going to turn
- 5:22out. So anyway, I had, I had asked,
- 5:25she had a great voice, asked her out.
- 5:26So I picked her up at her house. I think we were close to the
- 5:30same age. She's probably a little older, I
- 5:31guess, maybe a couple years older.
- 5:33She absolutely did not look like her voice at all.
- 5:39Did she have? A face for radio.
- 5:41Well, it's not even about it's not even about that.
- 5:43All I can say is I really believe in life that we all have
- 5:48a physicality. So on a rare occasion you see a
- 5:51four with a 10. But but but it no, and I'll I'll
- 5:57be the four. I'm OK with that.
- 5:58But you, but normally you normally eights and nines and
- 6:0210s all hang out with each other.
- 6:04So when you so when, yeah. So when you do see a one with a
- 6:0710, you're like, Dang, you know, hey, great job, blah, blah,
- 6:09blah. And it's pretty.
- 6:11We've talked about this before on the show.
- 6:13It's perfectly possible to be a 2 or a three and pull in a 10
- 6:18because you've got a great personality.
- 6:19But you're ugly, as you know. So you have a lot of money.
- 6:23Or well, well, there you go, you just said it.
- 6:26I didn't say it. So anyway, she looked nothing,
- 6:29absolutely nothing. So there was not an ounce of
- 6:32like, not even like, oh, because, because come on now,
- 6:35Michelle, I know, I know you haven't been as worldly as me,
- 6:39but I mean, there's there's people I would make out with,
- 6:41but I would never like date. Does that make sense?
- 6:44Oh yeah, OK. Right.
- 6:46Of course there's people I would kiss and you know, but that that
- 6:49would be it. You'd make out and that'd be it.
- 6:50You'd never see him again. OK, well, this wasn't even in
- 6:53that universe. Like it wasn't even a a
- 6:55possibility of like we were going to, we were going to have
- 6:57any relations after this date. So I think I took her bowling
- 7:02and then I took her to the skating rink where I was working
- 7:04at the time. And Pokey might, my first wife,
- 7:07just laughed her ass off because and #1 she couldn't skate, so
- 7:11she was falling down all over the place.
- 7:13So I look like a, you know, like trying to pick her up, you know.
- 7:16And anyway, so Pokey just laughed and laughed and laughed
- 7:21and I got back to her place and she tried to invite me in, you
- 7:25know, I mean, she basically put it all out on the table.
- 7:27And I said, yeah, I think I'll just be heading on home.
- 7:31So not really a stalker, but the first lesson of radio is just
- 7:35like that. Our voices don't look like our
- 7:37faces. Guess what?
- 7:39On the other end, they they do not.
- 7:43Yeah. Have you now, I guess that's the
- 7:45number one rule is you don't you don't date listeners.
- 7:47It's kind of like we're going to strip club.
- 7:49We're going to strip club. You don't date the clientele.
- 7:52So I learned my lesson really early going forward.
- 7:56I was 18. I said OK.
- 7:57After that, I said Nope. And I don't recall looking back
- 8:01as long as you've known me. I've never dated A listener.
- 8:02Have. I don't think so, not.
- 8:04That I can recall. No, no.
- 8:06So I mean. If you did, it was in secret and
- 8:08you didn't tell I, I don't. I mean, I've met people by being
- 8:12the radio DJ, you know, as the radio DJ, but I don't think I
- 8:16ever had anybody. I never, they never called in.
- 8:18And, you know, we hooked well, well, well, well, when I was
- 8:22working at when I was working at Z1O3 in Idaho Falls.
- 8:27So it's so funny. This is a funny story.
- 8:29So Z1O3 out kind of, I was like 23 years old, 23 years old.
- 8:33I was a young kid. Yeah, this was 1992.
- 8:35And if you know anything about Idaho Falls and Pocatello and
- 8:40Boise and Rexburg, Rexburg has the big Mormon college, right?
- 8:43So they wore so, So I've always said this and I'll say it again,
- 8:50the easiest person is the preacher's daughter.
- 8:53If you're ever curious, you know, if you, if you want a, a,
- 8:56a score easiest first. So anyway, I was working night.
- 9:00I was working overnights on Z1O3.
- 9:02This gal calls up out of the blue and we, we kind of hit it
- 9:05off and she's like, well, I'll, I'll just come back to you, to
- 9:08your apartment Da da, da, da da. So that was the, the one time I
- 9:12did take a listener home, You know, she was, and she wasn't,
- 9:15she wasn't, you know, me being a four, she was a four.
- 9:19So that that we kind of, you know, four or five.
- 9:21We it was, it was. Yeah, it wasn't, Yeah.
- 9:23It was like, OK, I, you know, but but I will tell you this.
- 9:26And, and to not make it sound as exciting as it was, you do
- 9:30realize that it's hard to have sex with a complete stranger
- 9:34that you have, that you've just met.
- 9:37You know, it really, it really is because it's like if you're
- 9:40not vibing, you're not vibing. Some people, I guess some people
- 9:43can, some people can vibe. But you and I both know the
- 9:45first time is always the most awkward of all.
- 9:48Oh. Yes.
- 9:48It just, it just is. So it wasn't, I'm sure it wasn't
- 9:52that enjoyable to her at all. And it really wasn't that
- 9:55enjoyable to me. So looking back, I wish I could
- 9:57take that away because because it really was like, what were
- 10:02you thinking? I was a stupid kid.
- 10:04But I think that's about in terms of doing some stupid
- 10:08stuff. It was a lesson learned.
- 10:10Don't date the listeners. Yep, isn't #2 don't eat homemade
- 10:16food brought. Oh yeah, when they leave, yeah.
- 10:18So I'll take my. Chances if you know them right.
- 10:21I'll take my chances. I'll take my chances with the
- 10:23food. Now I I cannot tell Alliance I
- 10:25haven't had, I can't say I haven't had admirers because you
- 10:28know, we not not necessarily stalkers because you've seen
- 10:31them. You've seen I've had admirers,
- 10:33right? You know, But I would not say
- 10:35anybody that literally stalked me or wouldn't, you know, play
- 10:38play misty for me. You are.
- 10:42You are, I do. I know you do, so I'm sure you
- 10:44have another story. Let's hear it.
- 10:46I do, yeah. So the next stalker I had was
- 10:49definitely a lot more serious. It was when I worked at KFFM.
- 10:55The second time, which I don't know if you were there or not,
- 11:00it would have been during this time period.
- 11:03And you know, of course, this is what, 19, 99 and back?
- 11:07Then there's. There's no Internet, so our
- 11:11listeners couldn't just look on the Internet to see what we
- 11:14looked like. They would have to.
- 11:16They would have to come to a remote broadcast or something
- 11:19like that. And I was doing a remote
- 11:21broadcast. I don't remember where it was,
- 11:24but this guy, he came up to me and he said hi.
- 11:27He introduced himself. I remember his name because this
- 11:30name will stick with me forever. His name was Walter.
- 11:34I don't remember his last name though.
- 11:37And just in that instant when he came up to me and said hi, I got
- 11:41that spite feeling, that girl like weird, creepy vibe that we
- 11:46get off of men. And again, I was at a remote
- 11:50broadcast, so I had to be nice, you know, civil he was, he's a
- 11:55listener, right? You know, so I couldn't be rude
- 11:58or anything. So I'm just normal nice.
- 12:02I'm not overly nice or anything like that.
- 12:04Then maybe a week or two later I was pumping gas and the same guy
- 12:11was across the pump from me pumping gas and he said hi to me
- 12:17and I didn't really think anything of it.
- 12:19I thought, OK, this is just a coincidence at the time, but it
- 12:23was kind of weird. And again, I got that off vibe
- 12:28and I and I just tried to be nice.
- 12:30Not overly nice, just I just want to get my gas, get in the
- 12:33car and go. Then a few weeks later I'm at
- 12:39Costco and you know, Costco has the little 2 seater carts for
- 12:42kids, a little double seater. So yes, Matthew and Benjamin are
- 12:47with me in the cart. They're probably too like I'm
- 12:51getting chills just thinking about this.
- 12:53They are probably 2 and one I want to say if I remember right.
- 12:58And I see out of the corner of my eye this guy Walter walking
- 13:03up to me. And in this creepy voice he
- 13:08says, are these your kids? And which I'm getting chills
- 13:13again. I got chills.
- 13:15And I just tried to be nice to just try and get away from him.
- 13:19I'm like, you know, I'm, I got to go.
- 13:20I'm really busy. You know, I'm got to be
- 13:23somewhere. And I just got what I needed and
- 13:27got out of Costco. I was freaked out.
- 13:31But it gets even better. So after Costco, a few weeks
- 13:36later, I'm at home with Matthew and Benjamin.
- 13:39And again, this is before the Internet where you can't just
- 13:43look up people's addresses. And I open the door.
- 13:46Yep, Yep. I open the door and it is a
- 13:49Walter. She is standing at my front door
- 13:55and I freaked out like I think my brain just started to glitch
- 13:59because I didn't I didn't know what to do because in I'm
- 14:03thinking why is he at my house? What am I going to do?
- 14:06I'm by myself with my kids. So again, I just tried to be
- 14:12nice, not overly nice but try to, you know, get him.
- 14:17So leave right? I I don't even remember what I
- 14:20said to him. So then I told my husband and we
- 14:24called the police and luckily I knew a few police officers on
- 14:30the police force. But again, this is 1999, so
- 14:33although we had stalker laws, they weren't as good as they are
- 14:37now, right? Right.
- 14:39So the police came over. I told him everything that had
- 14:41been happening. They did have a report and they
- 14:45said that I didn't have grounds. I did not have grounds for a
- 14:49restraining order because he didn't threaten me or, you know,
- 14:52do anything like that. But my police friends said that
- 14:56they would go talk to him, right, Right.
- 14:58And give him a warning. And I never saw or heard from
- 15:03him again. So I'm assuming he got the shit
- 15:05feed out of him. So that's my stalker and after
- 15:10that I had to have this reoccurring dream because of it.
- 15:12But if you have any more stalker stories, you can go ahead and
- 15:15then I'll tell you my nightmare. That's I was trying to think.
- 15:18I mean, it's I might have always been not necessarily stalkers,
- 15:22but I do remember one time when I was working at and you jog my
- 15:25memory. I was working at KATW at
- 15:28Katafemin. And so here's an interesting
- 15:30story. So my first real girlfriend when
- 15:33I came back from college, I was the overnight DJ at KCLK and she
- 15:39was the overnight DJ at KATW. So and so and so we ended up she
- 15:46was my very first girlfriend and we real like real girlfriend,
- 15:49you know, not junior high or high school, but actual real
- 15:53real girlfriend. And so we dated for and no, this
- 15:56is crazy when I say the timetable dated for like 4
- 15:59months and, and, and I, and I, you know, not to get explicit,
- 16:04but I, that's who I lost my virginity to.
- 16:07So I lost my virginity in the parking lot of the radio station
- 16:11in her blue. That's kind of fitting for you.
- 16:13Though in her blue. In her blue Toyota Celica, you
- 16:18know so. And trust me again, as I always
- 16:21joke, it wasn't great. At least, at least at least not
- 16:24on my side. It wasn't great.
- 16:25Time never is. It never is so and So what
- 16:29happened was interesting enough was she started, she did break
- 16:34up with me, but she started dating the janitor.
- 16:36So she did the overnight shift at the at the radio station.
- 16:39She got promoted to six to midnight and there was a janitor
- 16:42that would clean this radio station and his and she ended up
- 16:45marrying the guy. She did end up marrying the guy.
- 16:47So interesting enough. So I lost my job at KCLK.
- 16:53You're going to love this story because this is the best story
- 16:54ever. Lost my job at KCLK, put my tape
- 16:57in over at K at Cat FM. Within a week I was working over
- 17:00at KATW, the same radio station. Now we have broken up.
- 17:04We're broken up. She's doing 6 to midnight and
- 17:07maybe if she even, I think she even got as far up as midday.
- 17:09She was doing middays. And so I was just a part timer.
- 17:13Well, what happened was new owners took over and then just
- 17:18like you know how radio works, she went from middays to nights.
- 17:23So it was funny that at one time I was overnight, midnight to six
- 17:27and she was doing 6 to midnight. They replaced me.
- 17:30I replaced. We flipped shifts.
- 17:33So they because they wanted to get rid of her, so they put me 6
- 17:36to midnight and then they put her midnight to 6.
- 17:39And so the janitor kind of being a blockhead, guess what?
- 17:42He goes, oh, I'm going to go kick his ass.
- 17:44I'm going to, you know, so I get this call at the radio station
- 17:47where and I kind of wish I could remember his name.
- 17:49I mean, I know her name, but I can't recall his name.
- 17:51He's like, I'm going to come down and kick your ass.
- 17:55You better be ready. So I call my buddy Randy, my
- 17:58best buddy Randy, and Randy says I'll be yeah, yeah, I'll be down
- 18:01there in a little bit, Rick. So he comes down, Randy comes
- 18:03down all dressed up. I'm like, what the he's?
- 18:07Dressed up for a fight. Yes, and I said, I said, I said
- 18:11why you dressed up? He's like, well, if we're gonna
- 18:12get our, if we're gonna get our asses kicked, I want to look
- 18:14good doing it. We're going to jail.
- 18:17He wants to be all dressed up for sitting in his jail cell
- 18:19like. Yeah, I was like, you don't want
- 18:21to be somebody's bitch in jail. But anyway, so my buddy Randy
- 18:24shows up. So he's all dressed up.
- 18:25I'm like, Oh my God, we're gonna get in this fight, this rumble
- 18:28here. And he called again and said I'm
- 18:30gonna come down there. So we're like, hey, come get us.
- 18:32And he never, he of course, you know, like it never showed up.
- 18:35So I did, I did call the the Lewiston Police Department and
- 18:38the, again, this is 1989. So this is free anything, you
- 18:43know? Oh yeah.
- 18:44There's no. Stock, almost even free
- 18:46computers basically. And the cop comes down and goes,
- 18:49what's his name? I gave him his name goes yeah,
- 18:50we'll go have a talk with him and you'll never bother you.
- 18:52And he, he never did. She ended up marrying him and
- 18:55they ended up having a bunch of kids.
- 18:56They did break. I mean, they did get a divorce
- 18:58later down the road and all all of that.
- 19:01And it was so funny. So Logan, she has a daughter
- 19:06that's Logan's age. And so I remember them going to
- 19:08school together and shame on me because you should never tell a
- 19:13teenager anything. Because I said, oh, I, I, I
- 19:16know, I, I know, I know her mom. Well, duh, duh, duh, duh.
- 19:22And I, I have a very open relationship with my son.
- 19:26So he knew what it kind of transpired.
- 19:28I told Logan, I know. I said Logan, yeah, I lost my
- 19:31virginity to your mom. Well, do you think he went and
- 19:34told the the his his friend? Of course.
- 19:37Well. Of course.
- 19:38Oh my God. So I was more embarrassed.
- 19:39I was more embarrassed by really Logan, you went to we went to
- 19:43the daughter and said, hey, by the way, you know, I mean, of
- 19:47course, I mean, she knows who I am.
- 19:49Absolutely. So it was a little a little
- 19:50embarrassing when they'd come to visit night, the daughter was
- 19:53there. I'm like really no jeans.
- 19:54OK, so, but it's kind of a funny story, but yeah, the, the cops
- 19:58did the same thing. So, you know, you get those
- 20:00weird calls, you do get those random weird calls.
- 20:03Not now. Again, we can dispel the the,
- 20:06the secret. We're not live 24/7 anymore.
- 20:09No. So when you were live 24/7,
- 20:12crazy things could just happen. I mean, they did.
- 20:15Oh, yeah. Because you're live 24 hours a
- 20:17day, midnight to six, you're working.
- 20:18I mean, you know, there's some scary, there could be some scary
- 20:21things, you know, Like tell us about your nightmare because I'm
- 20:23sure, I'm sure it's pretty scary.
- 20:25Well, yeah, I mean, thankfully I did not have any more stalkers
- 20:28after Walter, but I mean again, I didn't get back into radio
- 20:33until I was like what, in my late to mid 40s?
- 20:36And who the hell wants to stalk a middle-aged woman?
- 20:39So. A voice over guy so.
- 20:42So, yeah, so but after after we can, we can talk about that in a
- 20:50different episode. But yes, after Walter, my
- 20:57stalker, I would have this reoccurring dream.
- 21:01It would happen periodically really for no reason.
- 21:04And I wouldn't even call it a dream.
- 21:05I would call it a nightmare. It was it was a nightmare, but
- 21:10this nightmare would be that I was getting into my car and
- 21:14somebody would come up behind me.
- 21:16They would use chloroform or something like that to knock me
- 21:19out, tie me up, gag me, put put me in their trunk.
- 21:24I can't see the kidnappers face because they have that that
- 21:27black face ski mask thing on. And whoever it is takes me to
- 21:33this remote cabin. And the dream always ends with
- 21:38me lying on the floor. I've been stabbed.
- 21:43And you know how that pool of blood just oozes out from a
- 21:46body? Yes.
- 21:47And I would be starting to float above my body.
- 21:51So basically I'm dead and my spirit is leaving my body.
- 21:56And I would wake up. You know how you feel like
- 21:59you're living this dream or nightmare?
- 22:03My heart, yeah, my heart would be racing.
- 22:06I would be scared to death but thankfully now that I'm out of
- 22:11radio I do not have this nightmare anymore.
- 22:14But I try to avoid any shows that have to do with stalkers
- 22:18which I've never watched. That Netflix show you.
- 22:22Because I heard, because I. Heard that That's what it was
- 22:24about. I didn't know.
- 22:26That's true. OK, good.
- 22:27Yeah, I've never watched. It total creeper.
- 22:31Oh good OK so I I will not be watching that show.
- 22:34I try to stay away from episodes of those Criminal Minds or
- 22:38whatever that have to deal with that.
- 22:40So so yeah. So that's.
- 22:42Very, I mean, it really, it really is.
- 22:45We're just seeing that that, that murder trial wrap up in
- 22:48Moscow, ID, which is close to my my home of Clarkson and Lewiston
- 22:5230. That's 30 miles up the, the
- 22:53road, you know, and the guy pleaded guilty even though
- 22:57everybody kind of suspected he was guilty.
- 22:59But that stuff, that Dateline, you know, NBC stuff really does
- 23:04happen. And and it can happen to and
- 23:07happen to radio people. I want to say many years ago,
- 23:10and I definitely don't want to go deep into it, but I remember
- 23:13in Spokane, I want to say it was a radio female DJ, radio female
- 23:17DJ that was coming, that was working midnight to 6 had gotten
- 23:20raped, that that a listener had been stalking them.
- 23:25And you hear a lot of these horrific stories.
- 23:28Rebecca Shaffer from the TV show My Sister Sam, she was an
- 23:33aspiring actress and they literally got the stalker got
- 23:36her phone number, I mean her address from the phone book back
- 23:39in the day before. And they passed the Rebecca
- 23:41Shaffer law after she got killed because the stalker showed up.
- 23:46The stalker saw her. So she was on My Sister Sam with
- 23:49Pam Mork and Mindy's Pam Dauber. So yeah.
- 23:53So they, it was a it was a three season show by Sister Sam in the
- 23:57late 80s. And so she went on Rebecca
- 23:59Shapes is just an actress, a young kid.
- 24:01Well, she went on and did a movie where she took her top
- 24:03off. And so the stalker was like how
- 24:08you know, cuz he had a, a purity thing, you know, of her and, and
- 24:14he and she answered the door because they are address.
- 24:18She was, I mean, she wasn't, she wasn't famous, famous, famous,
- 24:21but she was still a working actress and famous enough.
- 24:25And, and she opened the door and she and she and he shot her
- 24:27point blank because of this. So I think about all these,
- 24:30these scary things that definitely can happen more and,
- 24:32and not the min cat. These things can't happen to
- 24:34men, but it but it's predominantly women because they
- 24:38because these guys get such fantasies and it's it's just,
- 24:44it's absolutely crazy when you think about how obsessed a fan,
- 24:47a fan can get. Yeah.
- 24:49I, I, I've had, I've had obsessed I was talking to.
- 24:54So I not from a radio standpoint, but when I was in
- 24:57high school, I had an obsessed, I was at church group, church
- 25:02group. There was a girl and I want to
- 25:04say her name, her name was Janine or Jeannie.
- 25:07And I could not shake her, you know, she was obsessed and she
- 25:13later apologized. I started the grocery store when
- 25:15we were adults and she came up and actually apologized to me.
- 25:17She goes, Oh my God, I'm so sorry.
- 25:19But like, I, I, I, I, I deserved it just so, you know, looking,
- 25:25looking, but not that I deserve I did not, I did not lead her
- 25:27on. Just so you know, I did not lead
- 25:28her on. I told her no from the get go.
- 25:30But but anybody knows anything about me and my obsessive
- 25:33personality, I should, you know, I, I got a good, yeah, I got a
- 25:37good like, yeah, Rick. That's how it feels when it,
- 25:40when the full Rick Michaels goes on and the full Rick Michaels,
- 25:42Monty, you know, you think I would take it.
- 25:45You think I would have taken a note from that because, you
- 25:48know, anyway, so I've had, I mean, I've had some, some
- 25:52obsessed people with that. Yeah, I've had a few.
- 25:54But nothing like your level, nothing like where I was like I
- 25:57never felt in fear of my life or any of those things.
- 26:00But I can totally see. And I think it like at the time,
- 26:04it wasn't so much me I was concerned about, it was more
- 26:07after, right after he saw Matthew and Benjamin that really
- 26:11attacked me over the edge. Well, it's really weird when
- 26:13we're on radio because I remember that Logan Pokey and I
- 26:17had gone to Red Robin one night in Yakima and we and, and there
- 26:21was a couple in front of us or some people in front of us.
- 26:23Well, they recognized me from the radio station and they
- 26:26turned around and they looked right at Logan, who was
- 26:28probably, I don't know, six or seven at the time, and goes, oh,
- 26:30you must be Logan. And Logan took a big step back.
- 26:34Yeah. Like he's like, I don't know you
- 26:38stranger. Danger.
- 26:39That's one thing I love. Yeah, that's I I will say that's
- 26:41the one thing I can honestly say about my my son, which was nice,
- 26:45is he was never there. There are children that will
- 26:47walk up to complete strangers and start a conversation.
- 26:51My son never in a billion like no, like Nope.
- 26:55I don't know you. I don't, I don't talk to you.
- 26:59And so I was always proud of him that way.
- 27:00But yeah, this listener comes up and literally goes, oh, you must
- 27:02be Logan in a very nice way. And he's like, no, babe steps
- 27:05back, steps back and goes, I don't know you.
- 27:08Well, because we, again, we talk about our lives and our kids and
- 27:12Oh yeah, because we're real people.
- 27:14And then our listeners, our, our friends, they get to know us and
- 27:18our families and our kids. And so it's just natural that
- 27:21they would say. That well, because they.
- 27:24Know him? The, the, you know, The funny
- 27:26thing about my neighborhood where I live is I didn't, I
- 27:29didn't, I, I know my neighbors, but I never went out and said,
- 27:31hi, I'm Rick from the radio. I've never once ever, I never
- 27:35once mentioned that I'm on the radio.
- 27:37They find out interesting enough, they find out one time
- 27:40it was so funny was Barkley had gotten out into the pasture
- 27:43behind our house. And so my neighbor, my neighbor
- 27:46to the, to the, to the right, I'd gone out looking for Barkley
- 27:49and she came out and goes, oh, is your dog missing us?
- 27:51Yeah, he's a border collie, blah, blah, blah.
- 27:53And we're talking in our conversation.
- 27:55She goes and then, and then Barkley heard my voice.
- 27:57And so Barkley comes from the pasture.
- 28:00You know, he's in trouble. And then I go in the house.
- 28:02Well, like 2 weeks later, I'm walking, I, I go for a walk and
- 28:06I come around the bin and she stops me.
- 28:07She goes, oh, hang on a second, don't wait, wait, wait.
- 28:10So yeah, what's going on? And she's like, she goes, you're
- 28:12on the radio. And I said, oh, I and I go, I
- 28:15am. And she goes, yeah, because
- 28:16when, while we were having a conversation, when Barkley was
- 28:18missing, she's like, I know your voice.
- 28:20Why do I know your voice? And then she goes, then I'm
- 28:23driving down the road listening to one of the radio stations and
- 28:25there you are. And I went, he's on the radio.
- 28:28So those are things that I, you're the same way.
- 28:31I don't go out and say, hey, I'm on the radio cuz who cares?
- 28:34And then my other neighbor was so funny.
- 28:36I was making, I was doing a bit one day where I knew all the
- 28:39pets in the neighborhood, like, like, like there, like there's
- 28:42Joey and there's Bailey and there's Georgia.
- 28:46And I said, but I have no idea what my neighbors names are
- 28:48like. I have no idea.
- 28:49So I'm talking to my neighbor. That sounds like you.
- 28:52Yeah, it does. Well, and so I'm talking to my
- 28:54neighbor about the fence line. And in the middle of the
- 28:57conversation he goes, oh, by the way, my name is Jonathan.
- 28:59And I went, oh, well, hi Jonathan.
- 29:02And I go, I go, oh, you must listen to the show.
- 29:05He goes, oh, yeah, I listen all the time.
- 29:06I know because I know your voice.
- 29:09And he goes, my name's Jonathan. So it's it's funny.
- 29:11And then and then my neighbors up from across also listen to
- 29:14Kord. And so when Barkley or Roxy, Oh,
- 29:17there's Barkley, Oh, there's Roxy, there's Bodie.
- 29:20So it's you know, so it's not that I went out and said, Hey,
- 29:24I'm on the radio. But but they they recognize your
- 29:26voice. So it, it, it really is in the
- 29:29most interesting places, like, like you said, the grocery
- 29:31store. You know, if, if I'm and I'm
- 29:34just checking out, I'm not saying anything, but but people
- 29:37will come up go you, you know, or I was in line one time at
- 29:40yokes and then the gallant for me was talking to her little
- 29:42daughter goes, Oh, that, that's Rick.
- 29:44He's on the radio. I was like, Oh, I said, well,
- 29:46nice to meet you guys. Then I and then if they, you
- 29:48know, have a conversation with me, I'll have a conversation.
- 29:50But it is funny that I mean it's it's like, and then again, it's
- 29:55interesting as you well know, Michelle, like in Yakima, you
- 29:59got your Dave Edels or you got your Micas or you've got people
- 30:02that are really well known. But you and I encountered the
- 30:05points of that. I'm not well known but voice
- 30:09wise if I'm in a crowd. Yes.
- 30:12People will go not, not, they won't say Rick.
- 30:14They just go. That guy's on the radio.
- 30:16Right, they recognize your voice, where at least with mine,
- 30:19nobody hardly ever recognize my voice.
- 30:22So sounds good. Well, because you're not walking
- 30:24around. I mean, it's funny that people
- 30:26think we should talk about the fact that people think that you
- 30:28have a different voice on the radio and you don't.
- 30:30You are who you are. Right.
- 30:33So people like, oh, use your radio voice.
- 30:34This is my radio. Yes, I hated that.
- 30:37Which again, you know, when my daughter would make that
- 30:39comment. Oh, Mom's using her radio voice.
- 30:42Oh, yeah. The only thing is it's a little
- 30:44bit louder. And usually it's because I'm
- 30:46pissed off at you. So it's.
- 30:48Not called your mom Voicey Logan.
- 30:49Called. No, she would call it and I
- 30:51think she would do it just to like irritate because she would
- 30:54be like, oh. There's her radio voice.
- 30:56Mom, she was in her radio voice. I'll.
- 30:58Remember that Logan just used dad like, oh, dad, she's in his
- 31:00dad voice, you know, So it's one of those one of those things.
- 31:04But it is, it is funny to, we do get some anonymity because now
- 31:09they can go on and see what we look like.
- 31:11But for the most part, we still get a lot of anonymity compared
- 31:14to being on the TV. We've got you and I both have
- 31:16friends have been on the that are on the TV.
- 31:17Mike McCabe, good friend of mine, we started out together in
- 31:20Lewiston. He's the big weather forecaster.
- 31:22He gets wrecked. You know, Micah, the former
- 31:25mayor, you know, we couldn't get anywhere with Mike as we've
- 31:28talked about earlier episodes. Like, like, shit, dude, I just
- 31:31want to get a sandwich at Subway.
- 31:32Can you, you know, let's move it along.
- 31:33Let's move it along, dude. We.
- 31:35We only have an hour lunch, come on.
- 31:37Let's go exactly. And they want to talk about, you
- 31:39know, levies and dams and taxes. What's going on in the city?
- 31:44That's right. So yeah, stalker stalkers are
- 31:48always in. Stalkers are interesting, that's
- 31:50for sure. And, and have you ever gotten,
- 31:53I've gotten, I've gotten letters, not love letters, but
- 31:56I, I have gotten, Hey, I, we, we recently just got one from a
- 32:01girl that graduated high school in Pasco out of the blue.
- 32:04We get her, we get her announcement and it goes, hi, my
- 32:07name is hi. Hi, my name is Brittany.
- 32:09I'm graduating from Pasco High this year.
- 32:11Just wanted to say that I'm going to go to school at WSU and
- 32:14how much I'm going to miss the show.
- 32:15I like it when you guys do Facebook fun or whatever.
- 32:18And I'm like, well, we were like, who's this, like this?
- 32:20We've never encountered this person.
- 32:21And totally. And, and the nice thing is what
- 32:24makes it. There are still a lot of nice
- 32:25people that listen or I guess regular people.
- 32:29Yeah, because we've talked about prize.
- 32:31Pigs and different. Things well, there's still a lot
- 32:33of other nice people that listen.
- 32:34So I've always been pleasantly surprised.
- 32:38I've always been pleasantly surprised when I get AI get a
- 32:40letter which the the thing now. Is for if you have extra high
- 32:46school announcements or graduation invites is to send
- 32:50them to different places. We did this with Shaylee.
- 32:53So. Oh, so you're saying it was
- 32:54nothing? Well, no, I'm not saying.
- 32:56That I guess if she didn't handle that letter.
- 32:59If she did write a. Letter away kit then that yeah
- 33:02that means more you don't realize you.
- 33:05Don't think about, you know, you do in a sense, because we've,
- 33:08we've done a lot of charities, we've done a lot of different
- 33:11things and you can really, you can really make it impact.
- 33:13You don't think you make an impact.
- 33:14You can make everybody makes an impact in the, in this world.
- 33:17If you might not even think you're making an impact, but you
- 33:20are. I remember working at the
- 33:21skating rink many years ago and this girl gave me a Polaroid,
- 33:26you know, and she's like, hey, she goes and and she goes, Hey,
- 33:29Virgil, I think you because I, you know, I was the long haired
- 33:32DJ at the skating rink as well as being on the radio.
- 33:35And this girl was in a children's home.
- 33:37She was in a children's home. And she sent me a really nice
- 33:40letter saying, Hey, I think you're a cool dude.
- 33:41Da, da, da, da, da. And there she is all gothed out
- 33:44and there's Metallica and Tool and Rammstein behind her.
- 33:48I'm like, Oh yeah, we'll work out perfect.
- 33:50That that's my shit. No, but she was super cool.
- 33:53Tell me she was really, you know, And so I, I the the thing
- 33:56I've always found totally fascinating.
- 33:58And you, as you've gotten to know me, Michelle, through the
- 34:01years, I'm always bewildered by all the wild women, the tatted
- 34:08goth rock chicks, all the, you know, the wild women are
- 34:11interested in the nerds. It is only it, it always has.
- 34:15It's always fascinated me to some extent, you know, So it's
- 34:19what it's one of those things where if I if I, if I get hit
- 34:22on, it's like left field, like, wow, that way.
- 34:26Not that I wouldn't go out with them, but it's just like, why
- 34:29would I even be interesting to that person, if that makes
- 34:31sense, right? Maybe that's because the other.
- 34:33Goth men, you know, have that bad boy image and bad boys are
- 34:40fun for a while, but it gets old and you nerds are nice.
- 34:44Yeah, and and it's. And interesting because you just
- 34:47don't know when you're in radio. So it's so funny is my one of
- 34:51the girlfriends I had after I got a divorce from Pokey was a
- 34:54girl named Heather. You don't you never met Heather.
- 34:56But it's interesting how Heather and I met was Ken, Ken Heman.
- 35:01Remember Ken Heman at the radio station?
- 35:03He was the rock guy. He comes up to me and he goes,
- 35:06hey, by the way, there's this, there's this.
- 35:08Well, girl, but woman, I guess, you know, at whistling Jack who
- 35:12thinks you're cool. And I went what?
- 35:14Because you know, me, I'm always shocked.
- 35:16And, and he goes, yeah, me and my wife and I, Sandra hung out
- 35:19with her man. She's a, she's a rock chick and,
- 35:21you know, and she smokes cigs and she's, you know, tattooed up
- 35:24and biker chick and she really wants to meet you.
- 35:27And I said what? No, they like this is this is
- 35:30not even a, you know, I just don't understand it.
- 35:33And so, so I met her and we ended up going out for a while
- 35:37before I moved to Bakersfield. And she was, she's super cool.
- 35:39She was, but we were so like she was like in, you know, into
- 35:42motorcycles and, yeah, hard, heavy metal.
- 35:45Like this is complete opposite of me.
- 35:47And I was, and I and I asked her.
- 35:49I said, I said what? Like, how did you, How did she
- 35:52found me? I didn't find her.
- 35:54She found me. And she said that Tom and I were
- 35:57at McDonald's one day and she was with her boyfriend at the
- 36:01time. And she looks over and sees me.
- 36:04And then I leave with Tom and she goes up to the counter and
- 36:08goes, hey, by any chance you knew who those two guys were?
- 36:10And they go, yeah, that's Rick and Tom from the radio station.
- 36:13That is so random. That is random.
- 36:16And then? So crazy.
- 36:17And then and then. Heather started.
- 36:19Working at Whistling Jack Lodge with Ken's wife Sandra.
- 36:23And you go, oh, my husband works at Katz, just just.
- 36:26And this was a year later. This was a year later after she
- 36:28saw me, you know, a year later she goes, well, do you know
- 36:32Rick? And she goes, yeah, we know Rick
- 36:35did it out. Well, can you set me up?
- 36:37So it anyway just isn't that like the oddest like yeah, that
- 36:41is. Random.
- 36:43It was almost fate. No, Well, no.
- 36:45She's super and. She's, we're still friends
- 36:47today, but it was just kind of cool that that like what you
- 36:51look across the room and a year later we were going on a date
- 36:54and I didn't know, like I didn't know.
- 36:57I didn't know it at the time, but it's kind of interesting how
- 37:00you know. You just don't.
- 37:01You don't know #1 Like you said, when you're in the public eye,
- 37:05people are, people are observing you all the time.
- 37:07People are. Oh, that happened to.
- 37:09Well, actually, if you want a crazy story, that's how Megan
- 37:12and I for the most part met too. I don't have I ever talked about
- 37:15how Megan and I met, so I'm not on our.
- 37:18Podcast, right? So Megan and I met on Match.
- 37:21Dot com we met on match.com. The funny thing about it was I
- 37:26was doing an event where they dumped the ducks into the, the
- 37:30Columbia River. So that's that big Rotary where
- 37:32they, the ducks float down the river.
- 37:34So I was in seeing that event that day with Kevin Yuretsky
- 37:38from the TV and then, and Megan had just moved to the
- 37:41tri-cities. And so I was doing a big, a big
- 37:45stunt to where I was living in a tent raising money for this
- 37:47cause. And so she went home and she's
- 37:51on match.com and she sees my face and goes, I know that I
- 37:57know that person. So she clicks a little :) on it.
- 38:02And she go. And so she sends me a message.
- 38:04She goes, hey, are you the DJ that's living in a tent?
- 38:07And I wrote back, Well, I don't live in a tent all the time.
- 38:12So and then. She always tells people that she
- 38:17saw me at this event, she saw me at this event before we ever
- 38:21actually met, before you matched on match.com.
- 38:24Before we matched? Yeah, Before we matched on.
- 38:26Match.com So it was now that I'm going to say was fate there.
- 38:31There you go. And at at the time, some
- 38:34Schwan's girl was into me. So I would.
- 38:35Yeah. Sue because.
- 38:37Yeah. Well, yeah, so I don't.
- 38:40I don't think not. Megan doesn't know that part of
- 38:42the story. But but there was a girl.
- 38:44There was a Schwan's girl that had a boyfriend.
- 38:47No, she had a boyfriend and you were dating her.
- 38:50I was. Not dating her, but she was.
- 38:52She was hanging out with me. Yeah.
- 38:54So doing stuff, doing stuff I shouldn't have been doing.
- 38:56I again, again cleaned up the backyard.
- 38:59Backyard is clean. Backyard is clean.
- 39:01But yeah, that that that those, those single years, man.
- 39:07So, but yeah, so and that and How I Met that Schwan's girl was
- 39:11I was doing again. People walk up and meet you, so
- 39:15it's kind of crazy that way. So yeah, I don't know if I'd.
- 39:19I don't know if I'd do it if I had a stalker.
- 39:20I think you would. Probably like it I guess,
- 39:25especially. I don't know.
- 39:26Maybe not so much now, no. I think it's.
- 39:29I think it's. So we could we we'll talk about
- 39:33dating later down the road, probably.
- 39:35But it's like, you know, you know me.
- 39:37I like strong women. Yeah.
- 39:40That's one of the things I like the.
- 39:42Stalker. Well, not that, no.
- 39:44No, I I think obsessive is weird because because to me it's like
- 39:48so I've so I've dated people that or I've gone on dates with
- 39:52people that just stare at you and like, and I'm like, why are
- 39:55you staring at me? Oh, you're so beautiful.
- 39:57No, no, no, that's weird. No, but.
- 39:59I don't know if you've ever. Gone on those kind of things and
- 40:02you're like, and I'm like, OK, this is not going to work out
- 40:05because I want, I want my mate or my wife to have their own
- 40:10personality. I want them to like their own
- 40:12things. I I don't want to be the center
- 40:14of their universe. I, I guess that's a better way.
- 40:17You and I have you and I both have friends where they're weird
- 40:20couples because they're one of them so obsessed with the other
- 40:23one that they can't breathe. Like they can't Literally, it's
- 40:27like, I think that's creepy. So, so having people stare at
- 40:31you or think you're beautiful or any of that.
- 40:33I mean, it's it's nice, but it's like you said that Netflix TV
- 40:37show you. No thanks.
- 40:39You know, I would rather I would rather be I would rather be
- 40:42married to someone who calls me out on my shit.
- 40:45That's the best part. I want someone to say, oh,
- 40:46you're full of shit. Your eyes are brown to the top.
- 40:49You're full of shit. That I I'm like, oh, I'm in
- 40:52love, right. It's like I shaking to keep you
- 40:54in line. Yeah, I ain't taking your.
- 40:56Crap, yeah. Regardless of if you're Rick
- 40:59Michaels. Right.
- 41:00Oh yeah, I hate any of that crap.
- 41:02I, you know how I, you know how I feel about, you know how I
- 41:04feel about that stuff. It's like I because I always
- 41:07tell people, same as you, Michelle, our personalities are
- 41:10our personalities. I was this personality long
- 41:12before I was ever on the radio. This is who I am.
- 41:15So the radio, I guess accentuates that.
- 41:18But if I was a psychologist, if I was working at Walmart, I
- 41:22would still be the same person. You'd still be the loudest
- 41:25employee. I'd be the.
- 41:27I would be I'd. Be the guy going hippie, hippie,
- 41:29hippie, hippie. Hey, guys, are we gonna do the
- 41:31cheer today? Come on, guys.
- 41:33Hey, why? Why are you all down?
- 41:35Well, because we work at sucky Walmart.
- 41:37No, no. Walmart's the best.
- 41:39Oh, my God. Walmart.
- 41:40Yay. Go rah, rah, rah, team.
- 41:41Then they Take Me Out and shoot me.
- 41:43You'd make the best Walmart greater.
- 41:45Rick Michaels is no longer an employee of Walmart.
- 41:46He's been. Shot in the head, left for dead.
- 41:49Sorry, I got a little off the rails on these things you did.
- 41:52Yeah, because I wanted to circle.
- 41:53Back you were talking about how we don't even realize we make
- 41:56impacts on our listeners. Go ahead and tell tell us a.
- 42:00Story where you feel. Tell us a story where you feel
- 42:02like you've made the most impact in radio.
- 42:04I mean not necessarily the most impact.
- 42:06But it was when I was doing mid days on KFFM again, I think it
- 42:10was that second time when I was working there, when you and I
- 42:13were working together and a listener called me up and she
- 42:17said I've never met her, never talked to her before.
- 42:21And she said that I just want to tell you that you make my days
- 42:26bearable and to the point where I can keep going.
- 42:31And she was going through this horrible divorce with her
- 42:33husband. Like, I'm getting chills now
- 42:35just thinking about that. And yeah, I.
- 42:38Was. Just in shock.
- 42:40I mean, one, because we don't think we make that much of an
- 42:44impact, especially on a, you know, music based format that
- 42:49you can't really converse a lot in between songs.
- 42:52So I mean, that really, you know, hits home to you.
- 42:57And again, you don't really realize the impact that you have
- 43:00on people just day-to-day that you don't even know about.
- 43:04I mean, there's probably thousands of Rick Michael
- 43:07listeners that you make an impact on every day.
- 43:10We, I don't know about that, but I will tell you.
- 43:11Some great stuff, Michelle, that you and I did a couple that will
- 43:14jog your memory Is Danger Boy in the doghouse raising money for
- 43:19that lift van? That was a $6000.
- 43:21Yeah, a lift for Lucas. And then of course, our one of
- 43:25our favorites of all Super Sam, 11 thousand $11,000 for the
- 43:29Children's Merrill Network and Nicole and Jeff and Faith and
- 43:34Sammy, one of my favorite stories of all time.
- 43:37Now, of course, we've got Saint Jude, we've got Children's
- 43:39Miracle network, we've got a ton of, you know, radiothons that
- 43:43we've done. But when you can personally,
- 43:46like you said, going back to giving a giving away a backstage
- 43:48pass, you're at you're an event and you're going to go backstage
- 43:51and meet somebody and then there's somebody there going,
- 43:53Oh, I really wish I could do that.
- 43:54And you turn around and give them your backstage pass.
- 43:56Done that a million times. And it's the best feeling
- 43:58because you're giving them an experience that you get every
- 44:01day. Right which that.
- 44:03Kind of ties into the most memorable contest and stunts for
- 44:07me. It's not so much the contest or
- 44:11the stunts. It's like you said, when we do
- 44:14those things like Children's Miracle Network and we get
- 44:16matched up with a family and Super Sam and his family.
- 44:19And then after you were gone, we had Alex and his mom, Danielle.
- 44:23And you get to know these families because you're working
- 44:26side to side with them raising this money.
- 44:28And they're all incredible families and they have
- 44:31incredible kids. And those are probably my most
- 44:36favorite memories in radio and also when we would the Special
- 44:40Olympics basketball team, which I hate basketball.
- 44:45I. Hate it with the passion I suck
- 44:48at it and these athletes are legitimately.
- 44:52It's obviously right and 18 crushed us like help.
- 44:56No, no, don't, don't even don't even get me started on the
- 44:59Special Olympics. We but they loved.
- 45:02It they loved it when we would come and scrimmage them and they
- 45:06would kick our ass for one and they would be talking smack to
- 45:09us the entire time, which was hilarious.
- 45:13I don't know if we really helped them because again, we sucked.
- 45:17So it wasn't much of A competition or even a game for
- 45:21them, but I think it lifted their spirits.
- 45:23And they had a lot of fun. They enjoyed it.
- 45:25I think we got a little. Special award from them for it.
- 45:27But more than anything else is like, don't, don't Special
- 45:32Olympians. Yeah.
- 45:33They're way more athletic than than we are.
- 45:36And the A-Team like that was like playing NBA.
- 45:39That was like playing Wilt Chamberlain and Shaq and.
- 45:42And. And then you started going down
- 45:44to the B&C teams and then you're like, oh, now I can take the
- 45:47ball. And then they Boo you.
- 45:49Yeah. Like, so you've got a special.
- 45:51Yeah. Well, yeah, but you.
- 45:53So then you're then. You're a.
- 45:54You're a, you know, you're an A hole if you do and an A hole if
- 45:57you don't. So if you play aggressively, try
- 45:59to win this thing, you're an A hole.
- 46:01And if you don't, then you're an A hole.
- 46:02So yeah, it's, it was an amazing experience.
- 46:04So yeah, for me, I, I don't know if you, have you ever done
- 46:07donkey basketball? Yes, which is all.
- 46:09Yeah, don't. You have to do that.
- 46:12Yeah, donkey basketball things. No, no.
- 46:15So there's been a lot of, yeah, a lot of these, these wonderful.
- 46:18Again, you just don't realize that there are so many ways that
- 46:21you can, can make an impact and, and fun thing, fun, fun thing
- 46:26for me down in tri-cities is on, on occasions I've been asked to
- 46:30talk about being a foster kid at a, at different events.
- 46:33And so there's a place down here called my friend's place where
- 46:36it has runaway teens and stuff. So they invited me to speak
- 46:39about being a foster kid and, and, and my tribulations.
- 46:42And then for me, I got to go to the the YWCA in Yakima a few
- 46:47years back, and I was right before, Oh, she's the big
- 46:50newscaster. Soledad is She's the big famous
- 46:54Soledad O'Brien. Yes.
- 46:56So I, I was like #1. Intimidated because I got to
- 46:58speak before, before actually, no, I came after her, Thank
- 47:01goodness she spoke. And then then I got up there.
- 47:05I got up there and did some of my stuff.
- 47:07So getting to to, you know, speak at the YWCA in Yakima,
- 47:11different things like that. And then I got up there and we
- 47:13were raising money and, and Nick, our boss in Yakima.
- 47:16I couldn't see the tally and I didn't think I was making a
- 47:19difference. And he goes, Rick, when you were
- 47:20talking about your childhood, that the tally just went like
- 47:23this, Yes, of people given money.
- 47:25And so I've. I've always been, I've always
- 47:27been shocked that that unbeknownst to us, we're able to
- 47:32make that kind of contribution. So it's yeah, it's rewarding.
- 47:35Yep, definitely. So I.
- 47:37Mean we talked about on a different episode when we had to
- 47:41live in a car all together. Yes, on a podcast.
- 47:45I mean that was that was probably one of my favorite
- 47:48ones. It wasn't cold.
- 47:49It was a during the winter time and we were in the little
- 47:53breezeway of the supermarket, so we were protected.
- 47:57But that was fun because listeners just come by all the
- 48:00time. The one I did not like that you
- 48:02made me do. Remember the crane?
- 48:05Yeah, you're going to say the crane.
- 48:06That's classic. That was I wanted, I want to do
- 48:09that for 20 years, being up in the crane, 200 feet off the
- 48:11ground. Micah, again, we've talked about
- 48:13how Micah is such a putz and the mayor is, I'm just going to say
- 48:18it, the mayor is a putz, Former mayor, former mayor.
- 48:21Is a putz because. Oh, he goes.
- 48:23I'm afraid of heights. I can't go up there.
- 48:25I'm like, I'm like, get your ass.
- 48:27Up there, Yeah, get your ass. Up there, Yeah.
- 48:30And he's like, no, I got to go get a Jamba Juice and go to the
- 48:32gym. Got to take.
- 48:35Got to take the girls to the gun show.
- 48:36Got to take the girls to the gun show.
- 48:38All right, see, first it was this little.
- 48:41Box that they would lift us up in, so we'd have to go up
- 48:46separately, take shifts or whatever.
- 48:48And I remember my shift, it was starting to get windy and they
- 48:52were questioning whether they should even hoist me up there.
- 48:56And I'm thinking, oh God, I'm going to die in this box.
- 48:59It's going to fall from the wind.
- 49:01But again, I sucked it up and I did it and and he made a
- 49:06difference and he made a difference.
- 49:08And, and people don't, and the nice thing about it, people
- 49:10don't forget those things because when you run into a lady
- 49:12like, oh, I remember when you guys were in a crane, I remember
- 49:14you guys were in a car, all these different things.
- 49:16I remember when I remember when Cephas went across the stage
- 49:19naked during the bull bash, which he did not.
- 49:21He was in his underwear, but he had a sombrero, but he did go
- 49:23across the stage naked in the bull bash.
- 49:25So all these little things that are very memorable and and you
- 49:28realize that you make you make a contribution.
- 49:31And then the stories you tell like being like, I'm a foster
- 49:34kid, you've had a lot of trauma in your life.
- 49:37You've had some mom issues, you've had some dad issues.
- 49:40You've got a number one, what makes you so relatable is you've
- 49:42got kids, you've got 4 kids and different things that you've
- 49:46gone through. And so you don't realize at the
- 49:49time that when you're telling these stories, you're making the
- 49:51impact. But you are right.
- 49:53Yeah. I mean, it could just.
- 49:54Be us just talking about our daily lives and not realizing
- 49:58that that makes a difference to somebody.
- 50:00Well, I think when people listen to the radio.
- 50:03That they try to find common ground of we have a listener,
- 50:07KORDI just met him recently. A couple weeks ago, I was in the
- 50:09parking lot of yokes. He was driving by and stopped
- 50:12me. He goes, are you Rick?
- 50:14And I go, I go, yeah, I'm Rick. And he goes, he goes, I, I
- 50:18because we live in, we live in the same neighborhood.
- 50:20And I always look for your yellow truck and I see your
- 50:22trucks here all the time, but I never see you.
- 50:25And I said, oh, well, well, nice to meet you.
- 50:27And he goes, man, he goes. We have so much in common.
- 50:30You know, he goes, I was a Foster and then he just goes,
- 50:32then tells me all these things he has common.
- 50:33And then meanwhile you look at him and he's all tatted up and
- 50:37he's got a rolled up pack of cigarettes in his, you know,
- 50:39like, like the fawns, you know, and and you go, well, I can't
- 50:43imagine me having anything in common with him, you know, if I
- 50:46just met him normally. And then you realize you have a
- 50:49lot, you have a lot in common. He grew up poor, you know, he
- 50:52was in the system, different things like that.
- 50:54So you, you realize, yeah, you do make, you don't think you do,
- 50:57but you can make a real big impact in in the industry.
- 51:00Oh, definitely. And there's other contest that
- 51:05I, well, it wasn't a contest. It was more a stunt that I did
- 51:09not like besides the crane one. The crane one was fine.
- 51:12Once I got up there and right, I was fine and I just.
- 51:16Kept telling myself. You're doing this for a good
- 51:18cause, but one, It was a stunt with my former morning show
- 51:25partner, Gunner. OK, we did not have the.
- 51:28Budget for a. Stunt boy remember this right?
- 51:31Oh God. Oh gosh, I know where this.
- 51:32Is going OK so he would try to make me.
- 51:35The stunt boy but and I would to tell him no and his way around
- 51:41it was he would make these bets with me and somehow he
- 51:45discovered that I was deathly afraid of mice.
- 51:48I mean not deathly. I don't like that the type.
- 51:51Where I literally jump. Up on a chair and start
- 51:53screaming. I mean, I just growing up in the
- 51:56country, I do not like mice. I can handle snakes, spiders,
- 52:00you name it. Mice, not so much.
- 52:01So he made this bet with me where if I lost I was going to
- 52:05have to sit in a box or something with a mouse for for X
- 52:08amount of time. You were there during this you
- 52:11not remember was I? No I wasn't.
- 52:13I allowed. This yes, yes, you.
- 52:17And so I lost, obviously. And so I had to sit in this big
- 52:22refrigerator box with this mouse.
- 52:23But at the time my dad still had his beekeeper soup.
- 52:27And so I wore that. And Gunner was so pissed because
- 52:31he's like, that wasn't part of the deal.
- 52:34And I'm like, well, you didn't say what I couldn't, couldn't.
- 52:37Wear so I. Hated that stunt.
- 52:40And then he tried to do another one where I think I was working
- 52:45out and losing weight at one of the gyms that sponsored the
- 52:49radio station. And I was trying to meet this
- 52:52weight loss goal, which first of all was unattainable for like my
- 52:58size or whatever. But he bet me that if I didn't
- 53:02reach this weight amount that I would have to kiss his bare ass.
- 53:07And this is right before he got let go, which I think that in
- 53:10itself was an HR issue. And you should have been there
- 53:13again during this time. So.
- 53:16Those are the things I did not like.
- 53:18Well, because he had a crush on you, Basically, no.
- 53:21He didn't. He did not have a crush on me.
- 53:24I don't know, I'm just. Saying that's it, you know,
- 53:27that's kind of an issue, yeah. I mean, Oh yeah, we, we can talk
- 53:31later about all the HR stuff, HR violations.
- 53:36HR, right? Yeah, HR.
- 53:38HR yeah, I think is, is the statute of limitations passed
- 53:40now that we can talk about HR issues that we've had through
- 53:42the I think the years, three years, three years I've had,
- 53:45I've had. A I've had a lot of.
- 53:47Things happening. HR violation lot.
- 53:49Not me personally. But things have happened to me.
- 53:52Where was like, yeah, so we could definitely do another
- 53:55episode. A lot of that drama's gone.
- 53:58And well, again, we're not live anymore.
- 54:00So a lot of the drama's gone away.
- 54:01But right, I mean, the morning shows still are.
- 54:04So Yep, the more online shows still, yeah, yeah.
- 54:07So there's. Still, there's still those
- 54:08things, but but you also, like you said, it's a different time.
- 54:11You don't treat the the stunt boy thing has gone so far away
- 54:16anymore because there was a big lawsuit.
- 54:19We for a, we bet in Sacramento, we talked about it earlier or
- 54:22somebody died. And so that put a kibosh on
- 54:25well, this is after I mean this is well, I know that we're
- 54:28dying. From it I think he that's that's
- 54:31gunner stuff though. He likes that kind of stuff.
- 54:33Yeah, he wanted to be like that. Yeah.
- 54:37What? I don't know.
- 54:39I don't know if you'd call it controversial.
- 54:40I don't know. It's almost like Howard
- 54:42Sternish. Shock jockey, right?
- 54:44Shock jockey, Right. Exactly.
- 54:46How far can how far, how far can we push the envelope right,
- 54:50Which you know, again, some of those.
- 54:52Pretend stunts. Yeah.
- 54:56Yeah. Thankfully we didn't do any of
- 54:57those. You could always.
- 55:00The funny thing is. We can talk down the road about
- 55:03pretend stunts, like a lot of people think this stuff is real.
- 55:05So one of the one of the classic pretend stunts in Yakima, or I
- 55:09mean in radio is walking naked down Main Street.
- 55:12Have you heard that? Have you ever heard the classic
- 55:14stunt walking naked down Main Street?
- 55:16Yes. Oh, at 8:00 on Monday morning,
- 55:18I'm going to walk naked down Main Street.
- 55:20And then they bring a dog and the dog's name is Naked, right?
- 55:24But I'm walking naked down those are.
- 55:29Mainly for like April Fool's jokes and different.
- 55:31Things like that, right? I think the one I didn't like
- 55:34was. You're going to go on vacation,
- 55:37so you pretend that you got suspended.
- 55:40Oh God, that's one of the. Oh God, that is one of the.
- 55:45Yes, I. I've seen it accomplished well
- 55:48in some markets, but most markets don't buy it.
- 55:52Most people don't buy it because, oh, what a what a
- 55:55gunner and Michelle say this morning that got him fired, you
- 55:57know, on suspension for a week and while they're on vacation.
- 56:00I some people still believe it. Some.
- 56:02I mean, I'm not, I'm not, you know, sorry to pull back the
- 56:05curtain, but isn't this kind of what this podcast is all about?
- 56:07I mean, yeah, that's the whole point of this podcast.
- 56:08And that is? Stuff that happens.
- 56:11So right, Yeah. Not everything you hear is you
- 56:13know it's Wizard. Of Oz.
- 56:14It's it's smoke and mirrors. We don't do that stuff as much
- 56:17as we used to because I think that the audiences have changed,
- 56:20changed. I think audiences, they don't
- 56:22have time for it. Back in the day, they'd fought,
- 56:25you know, almost like a almost like a soap opera.
- 56:27They'd follow it. Now it's like now you get them
- 56:30for, if you're lucky, you get a listener for 20 minutes a day
- 56:32and that's it, right? I do remember the one stunt you
- 56:35wanted. To try to pull but we weren't
- 56:37allowed to. Do you remember this one?
- 56:39Which one was it? The stealing.
- 56:42The welcome to the. Palm Springs of Yakima sign.
- 56:45Oh God, that would have been the best stunt ever.
- 56:48Because but, but Gary, the whoever the owner was that
- 56:52'cause we were going to at least, yeah, but we were going
- 56:54to do a scavenger hunt. So we were we were going to.
- 56:56Pay for it. The Yakima sign would disappear.
- 56:59Can you imagine the kind of buzz that would have created?
- 57:02And then we'd give clues and we were going to give like $5000 to
- 57:05anybody if you could locate it. If you follow the clues, think
- 57:08about how now I will that you got to say that would have been
- 57:12amazing. It would have yes, but, but, and
- 57:15and we. Offered to pay for the.
- 57:16The sign removal, we offered to store it, the list goes on and
- 57:19on. And Gary just was not he he
- 57:21thought it was we were making fun of.
- 57:23He felt it was a mockery, felt it was a mockery.
- 57:26Everybody mocks that sign in this I know but but we.
- 57:29We we meant it in the best. That would have been, Yeah, that
- 57:33would have been huge. That one would have been epic.
- 57:35Yeah, I still. Remember that one?
- 57:37So you tried hard, You. Yeah, I tried this to make that
- 57:41one happen. Yeah, that.
- 57:42Would have been a good. Making making the Yakima sign
- 57:44disappear. But there's been a lot of, you
- 57:46know, different promotions and different fun things like, you
- 57:49know, are you the one O 7 three, you know, Bandit, we're going to
- 57:53give you $5000. I mean, all these different
- 57:55things that you can do. So right?
- 57:57I mean, we did have. Listeners for watershed tickets
- 58:03get a tattoo of our station logo that that's a cool one and then.
- 58:09One of them. Let us chop her hair off.
- 58:11You know, it's nice. So yeah, we in, we in.
- 58:14Bakersfield, we had a. Couple good ones in.
- 58:16Bakersfield one was ground beef on Groundhog Day where people
- 58:20had to dig their hands in to get George Strait tickets.
- 58:23So ground beef, they had to do that.
- 58:25And then we also did a good one where they where we got 5 dads
- 58:28together with Taylor Swift tickets and they had to build
- 58:30grills. You know, those little red,
- 58:32little red hibachi grills? You get it.
- 58:34You know, wherever. Ace Hardware.
- 58:36So you get 5 men. And guess what?
- 58:38Not nothing is more determined than a man trying to win
- 58:43daughter tickets to Taylor. You know, Right.
- 58:45Is that not a great stunt? That's a great stunt.
- 58:48And so whoever could build the BBQ that fast would win Taylor
- 58:52Swift tickets. So what men will do for their
- 58:55daughters? It's probably one of the most
- 58:57amazing things that you'll ever see in radio.
- 58:59I mean, unlimited, They'll do whatever.
- 59:01Yeah. Exactly.
- 59:02Mm hmm. So.
- 59:03Those are good. Yeah, there's some good one.
- 59:05Yeah. One of my other favorite memory
- 59:07this isn't. A contest or a stunt.
- 59:09But was when that magician, J Owen House came to town.
- 59:12Oh yeah. You know, the one with the white
- 59:14and the orange tiger. And I got to be sawed in half.
- 59:18Yes. But on stage, the cool thing
- 59:20about that was I got to see how this trick really works, right?
- 59:24That was cool. So yeah.
- 59:26Yeah. I, I and we had a listener.
- 59:28One time her name was Marsha who got to go David Copperfield and
- 59:32got to be vanished in the audience and knows how, you
- 59:35know, now I know how the stunt works because he got sued for
- 59:37it. But but again, and I asked her
- 59:41later, so Oh my God, how cool is it?
- 59:42And she goes well, then then, you know, they promised they
- 59:44they don't tell the secret. So she didn't tell the secret.
- 59:46I mean, we know the secret, but but it's it's it's more to see
- 59:51it, I guess, if that makes sense.
- 59:52And we love, we love those kind of things like the being sodden
- 59:55hat trick. It was.
- 59:56Super hokey, how it's really done.
- 59:58I was like, really? This is it, but it's a skill.
- 1:00:02But it's a skill. It's a skill to make it look
- 1:00:04real. I mean, I love, I love magic.
- 1:00:07I love magic When I see the art of illusion is incredible.
- 1:00:11Our good buddy Dave Edel is like you got Dave is really good at
- 1:00:15some of those tricks that he does.
- 1:00:17And that's how he got the ladies back in the day.
- 1:00:20Hey, ladies, let me do a magic trick for you in his little
- 1:00:24little vest. It's true.
- 1:00:27I don't, you know, Lance. Was a clown.
- 1:00:28So I, I mean, it's a little harder.
- 1:00:29To be a little harder to be Mr. Giggles and point.
- 1:00:32Pull in the ladies. But if you're if you can do
- 1:00:34magic in pulling the ladies, but not if you're a clown, you know
- 1:00:38it is popular as a clown, so. He is some women.
- 1:00:41I love Mr. I love Mr. and Misses Giggles.
- 1:00:43They're the best. So, all right, well, we're
- 1:00:48almost hitting our. Time slot so that means next
- 1:00:52podcast we could talk about our fake names how we came about
- 1:00:55them oh fake names are the best yeah we.

- 1:01:05Quick, my story on how I got my name.

- 1:02:01There are other people in the industry that has my that have
- 1:02:05Co opted by Michaels, but they do it differently.
- 1:02:08I've seen I've. Seen.
