- 0:18Hello, everyone, and welcome to the After Ever
- 0:20After podcast, the show where we take a look
- 0:23at Disney sequels to truly see what life is like
- 0:25after ever after. I'm James, and I am joined
- 0:30by my co -host Andy over here. Oh, James, how
- 0:34are you doing? I'm very well. How are you? I'm
- 0:38good. I'm good. Good. That's really good. And,
- 0:42uh... wide -eyed listeners may be able to tell
- 0:46that there's someone else on this call with us
- 0:48as well. How will anyone have told them? I don't
- 0:51know. I don't know. We have the wonderful Luke.
- 0:55With their wide eyes. Wide -eyed, wide -eared,
- 0:59who knows? We have the wonderful Luke Thomas
- 1:02with us from the Sandler Pit podcast, the Real
- 1:05Boys podcast, and the LEGO Sequels podcast, and
- 1:09probably another one that I've forgotten. Luke,
- 1:13welcome. Hello, thank you very much for having
- 1:16me. We're so happy to have you on the show. Thank
- 1:19you. How are you today, Luke? I'm very good.
- 1:22I'm sorry for delaying the recording of this
- 1:24a bit. I've been doing a lot of crafts today.
- 1:27That's fine. I'm also a little bit tired, so
- 1:30I'm sorry if I don't talk. Oh, you just come
- 1:34on to sit in silence and stare at the pictures
- 1:38of me and Andy. What listeners might not know,
- 1:42because I've listened to all your episodes today
- 1:43whilst doing my crafts, is that you record with
- 1:46no camera on. That's crazy. Yeah. We don't like
- 1:49looking at each other. I don't mind looking at
- 1:52Andy, but... I usually just draw a better version
- 1:55of James and then I look at that. What would
- 2:00a better version of James look like? It's got,
- 2:03like, the most chiseled chin ever. Big breasts.
- 2:07Cheekbones. Big breasts, yeah. You can barely
- 2:11see his chiseled chin. Well, yeah, I'm swell.
- 2:16I mean, I've just watched Lady and the Tramp
- 2:192, so I'm a certain kind of mood. Not terrible.
- 2:22Yeah, me too. Well, I'd be curious, because this
- 2:25will be our first one with you, what is your
- 2:27kind of general relationship with Disney sequels?
- 2:30So, I guess... I liked The Lion King 2 and 3.
- 2:34And Toy Story 2 is the first film I ever saw
- 2:38at the cinema. Does that count? It's a Pixar
- 2:40sequel. Enough for short conversation. Oh yeah,
- 2:45100%. I don't like Disney sequels typically.
- 2:51And not to skip ahead too much, but it all started
- 2:55with this film. So I'm a huge Lady and the Tramp
- 3:01fan. I think this was the thing I was the biggest
- 3:04fan of ever. And then this sequel. Well, as a
- 3:08little boy. And then this sequel, I remember
- 3:11it being the first time I was ever disappointed
- 3:13in my life. Some spoilers for Luke's thoughts
- 3:19on this one. I'm very excited to hear more. But
- 3:24Disney sequels to me, I think... They seem to
- 3:26have gotten a lot better as time's gone on, but
- 3:29I'll be honest, I haven't watched a lot of them.
- 3:31And when I heard you both talking about Cinderella
- 3:333, that sounded kind of sick. It's one of two,
- 3:37is it, that are in Disney Classics for us? I
- 3:41think so, yeah. I think we both liked Bambi 2
- 3:44enough, but other than that, Fantasia 2000 and
- 3:49Cinderella 3 have been the ones that we found
- 3:51actual value in. Yeah, Cinderella 2, absolute...
- 3:55Dog water. Yeah, and the others have been middle
- 4:00of the rage apart from Return to Neverland, which
- 4:03sucks as well. When's this episode coming out?
- 4:06Is it before Christmas or after Christmas? Before
- 4:09Christmas. All right, okay, so I won't... I won't
- 4:13talk about what I did today because it might
- 4:16ruin my girlfriend's Christmas present. But yeah,
- 4:18if my girlfriend's listening right now, you're
- 4:20never going to find out. But the thing I was
- 4:24doing was a bit weird and wrong. And then it
- 4:27was just me alone. doing this thing that was
- 4:31wrong and chuckling to myself listening to you
- 4:33talk. It sounds like you cheated on her while
- 4:35listening to our podcast. No, alright, okay.
- 4:39Yeah, I didn't do that. I was doing something.
- 4:42You're like a little tramp boy. Clowning all
- 4:44the other dogs. What's the dog in Lady and the
- 4:51Tramp? The other dog? Peggy? Lady and this tramp.
- 4:55There's Peggy. Oh, for God's sake. We're just
- 4:58about to record about this and you don't even
- 5:00know who Peggy is. We are recording. Good point.
- 5:04Oh, the Pekingese. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Excuse me?
- 5:08She's a Pekingese. Oh, is that the name of a
- 5:10dog that has like a fringe over its eye? Yeah.
- 5:14Is that what she is? Wait, were you cheating
- 5:16on your girlfriend with Peggy? Yes, I was, yes.
- 5:20Oh, my God. That's the Christmas secret. Not
- 5:23the only Disney character that you've got the
- 5:25hots for as well, is it? Excuse me? Excuse me?
- 5:28The fish. Yeah, the fish from Pinocchio, I think,
- 5:33is quite alluring. It's got beautiful eyelashes.
- 5:39Let's get this back on the rails. Yeah, sorry.
- 5:42Go on. Yeah, I'll keep quiet. Before we look
- 5:47at Lady and the Tramp Loop, we like to look back
- 5:50at Disney classics that may have not had a sequel.
- 5:52Between the last one we did, which was Peter
- 5:54Pan and this, there is actually... nothing in
- 5:57between so instead we're just going to take a
- 5:58quick look at the before ever before of the evil
- 6:01ways peter pan has continued nice hell yeah so
- 6:04this is uh mine and james's favorite franchise
- 6:07from disney yeah we love it so much yeah fantastic
- 6:12yeah fantastic i actually i like to call it andy's
- 6:16what we call a peter file he loves peter pan
- 6:20Another famous pedophile that may be out there
- 6:23is maybe David Lowery, who directed A Ghost Story
- 6:27and The Green Knight, because he actually, for
- 6:29some reason... directed peter pan and wendy in
- 6:322023 directly for disney plus this isn't the
- 6:35first one he's done as well he did pete's dragon
- 6:36so i don't know if he's just doing it for the
- 6:39money which is completely fair if so like no
- 6:41criticism but or maybe he just generally likes
- 6:44this process but yeah came out went straight
- 6:46to disney is that a live action film sorry it
- 6:49is yeah is that the one with hugh jackman no
- 6:51you're thinking of pan Oh, sorry. With Nirvana
- 6:55in it. That one was just unrelated. But this
- 6:58one's got Jude Law as Captain Hook instead. Oh,
- 7:01yeah, yeah, I remember this coming out. I don't
- 7:04remember this coming out at all. Because, Andy,
- 7:07you mentioned it, I think you mentioned it very
- 7:09briefly last week. Last episode, sorry. Yeah.
- 7:14And I had no idea this was a thing. And the fact
- 7:17that it's David Lowery of... One of my favourite
- 7:22films of whenever it came out, The Green Knight,
- 7:26is insane. Like, the fact that he would go from
- 7:30Green Knight to then just be like, Peter Pan
- 7:33time. Very strange. So I take it no one's actually
- 7:36seen this one? No. No, I haven't. It's got mostly
- 7:40middling to bad reviews, which is a shame. I
- 7:44do kind of want to check it out just for the
- 7:45David Lowery connection, and I do like Jude Law.
- 7:47I liked him in his other Disney Plus... project
- 7:50where he plays a pirate that harasses little
- 7:52kids, which is Skeleton Crew. Hell yeah. Haven't
- 7:56seen it. Yeah, shame. He's probably got the best
- 8:00going bald head. Maybe. Oh yeah, he owns it.
- 8:04Other than the live action one though, there's
- 8:07Tinkerbell got her own spin -off series of films
- 8:10that consists of six individual Tinkerbell standalone
- 8:14movies as well as a television special and a
- 8:17short film. Now, I asked Andy if we are going
- 8:22to cover these. You've got it. Outside of the
- 8:26podcast, I said, are we going to cover these
- 8:29on the podcast? And we kind of just talked about
- 8:32it. This was before we'd both watched Peter Pan
- 8:34and Return to Neverland. I never want to revisit
- 8:37this character again. I hate Tinkerbell. I think
- 8:41we can get away with it. It's not really a sequel.
- 8:43It's a spinoff. Yeah, true. Go to hell. There
- 8:46were plans for a seventh and an eighth one. The
- 8:49seventh got scrapped because of story reasons
- 8:51and the eighth and final film should have been
- 8:53Tinkerbell meeting Peter Pan, how they end up
- 8:56in Neverland and how Peter cut off Hook's hand.
- 8:59But there was plummeting sales and Disney Toon
- 9:01Studios closed so that ended up just being scrapped
- 9:04completely. Hell yeah. Oh, he's got a cast. Yeah.
- 9:08Sorry, I was just looking at the cast as well.
- 9:10It's Mae Whitman as Tinkerbell, as well as Lucy
- 9:14Liu, Raven Simone, America Ferreira, Zendaya,
- 9:17Rosario Dawson, Danny Guerrero, Michael Sheen,
- 9:21and Tom Hiddleston as Captain Hook. Wow. What?
- 9:26What a banging cast! They're not all in all of
- 9:29them. That's the highlights sprinkled across
- 9:32all six of the specials. And they've all got
- 9:36reasonably positive reviews as well. It's mad.
- 9:38That's good, at least. It's got Kristen Chenoweth
- 9:41in it as well. The good witch from Wicked. Oh,
- 9:45like for the original stage show? Yeah, the original
- 9:47stage show. She was in Wicked as well. She's
- 9:50like the little... She's one of the people of
- 9:54Oz. Yeah, I remember. I'm never going to watch
- 9:57it still. Yeah, no. Absolutely not. The only
- 10:00one that sounds actually interesting is the one
- 10:02that cancelled where you see Peter Pan cut off
- 10:04Hook's hand. I want to see that shit. I've seen
- 10:07that Tinkerbell film. It's good. Have you? Yeah,
- 10:11I've got a little sister, man. Oh, of course.
- 10:15Yeah, it came out in 2008. Yeah, yeah. Was that
- 10:18the first one that you watched? None of the others?
- 10:20I think I've watched the first one and maybe
- 10:22the Pirate Fairy or something else. I've watched
- 10:26two of them. I don't remember anything about
- 10:28them. Pirate Fairy is the one that Tom Hiddleston's
- 10:30in, apparently. So you're going to cover all
- 10:32of them, then? No. I'm never going to look at
- 10:35any of these ever again. Once I finish this little
- 10:38section. If there's... If there's enough want
- 10:43for it, then maybe we will. I'm a listener. I
- 10:46want that. I want that so bad. I'm not watching
- 10:49a Star Wars saga worth of stories about Tinkerbell.
- 10:55I think it'll be good. It's what the people want.
- 10:59I know. The people are right here. I'm your biggest
- 11:02fan. Let me listen to that. There was meant to
- 11:07be a live -action version of this coming out
- 11:09as well called Tink, but it's been in development
- 11:11hell since 2015. Reese Witherspoon was originally
- 11:15Circle in the role, but now she's just a producer
- 11:17on it, but it's still quote -unquote in development,
- 11:20but I doubt I'll ever see the light of day. Phenomenal.
- 11:23And then other than that, you've got two PlayStation
- 11:25games. One is Peter Pan Adventures in Neverland.
- 11:27One's Peter Pan The Nelgent of Neverland. That's
- 11:30PS1 and PS2 respectively. They just tied in Return
- 11:33to Neverland. Great. Finally, there's a TV show
- 11:36called Jig and the Neverland Pirates, which is
- 11:38set between Peter Pan 1 and 2. It's like a preschool
- 11:41kind of show, you know, like a dollar kind of
- 11:43thing where it's like, do you see Captain Hook?
- 11:45And there's a big gap where the kid answers.
- 11:47It's that kind of show. Sounds great. That's
- 11:49what we've got. That's it. That's all I've got.
- 11:53I mean, like, I don't really have much to say
- 11:54about it. It's just a preschool thing. It does
- 11:56have the Peter Pan characters in, but I haven't,
- 11:58like, watched any of it. I watched a clip just
- 12:01to see, like, what the animation style was, and
- 12:03it's very clear, just like a Dora the Explorer
- 12:06kind of, like, level show. Fair enough. Actually
- 12:09got the voice actor from the newer Peter Pans
- 12:13as well. Well, they didn't get the dead kid,
- 12:17did they? No, that's what I mean. Shut up. He
- 12:20died as a man, didn't he? You have to help Jake
- 12:24and the Neverland Pirates find the original Peter
- 12:27Pan's corpse in the abandoned warehouse. How
- 12:33horrible. And that's it for Peter Pan. We can
- 12:37close the book on Neverland once and for all.
- 12:39There was no Silly Symphony Sundays for Peter
- 12:42Pan. Not that I saw. Sad. What is a Silly Symphony?
- 12:46A Silly Symphony Sunday was a comic strip that,
- 12:50you know, did, like, it kind of covered... Fucking
- 12:55hell, I've never heard someone lose enthusiasm
- 12:57so much. Yeah, I was so excited, and then I was
- 13:00like, this is actually really boring. No, come
- 13:04on, come on. It just tells the story of... Well,
- 13:07Silly Symphonies were, like, what Disney called
- 13:09his old shorts. Like, you know, the dancing skeletons
- 13:11that I'm obsessed with. Oh, I love the dancing
- 13:14skeletons. And then Silly Symphony Sundays was
- 13:15just like... the comic book it was like a comic
- 13:17strip version of it so it was just a really basic
- 13:20retelling of like certain stories and stuff and
- 13:23and they didn't do it for this no i think they
- 13:25stopped like weeks and like I say weeks and weeks,
- 13:30years and years and years ago. Weeks ago? Weeks
- 13:33ago! So Big Pan was not on the cards. I meant
- 13:36like being in the podcast weeks ago because we
- 13:40haven't heard of Silly Symphony Sundays for a
- 13:43long time on the old pod, have we? Was it just
- 13:46like a wartime thing? Fuck knows. I don't really
- 13:49care, to be honest. I haven't checked. Thank
- 13:53you for the insight, man. Anyway. Should we jump
- 13:58on to Lady and the Tramp? Yeah. The OG. Let's
- 14:02do it. So, did anyone watch it before you watched
- 14:07Lady and the Tramp 2? Yes, I did. Yeah. I also
- 14:11did the double bill, so I watched the original.
- 14:15What do we think? Sick. I love it. Yeah, it's
- 14:19really nice. It's a lovely, lovely film. i thought
- 14:23it was fantastic i was like kind of like i put
- 14:26it on because i've seen this a lot and um i'll
- 14:29put it on and i'll like start doing some jobs
- 14:30while it's on because i don't need to make that
- 14:32many notes on it and then like i was just fucking
- 14:34doing that dad thing you know when like a dad
- 14:37will walk through like a living room and there's
- 14:39a tv showing like a film that he's interested
- 14:41in he just stops walking he's just stood for
- 14:43ages staring at the tv i was just doing yeah
- 14:45yeah yeah watching lady trying to get into the
- 14:47bed with the humans Oh, man. This is pulling
- 14:51my little heart. It's so lovely. It's such a
- 14:55nice, nice film. There was one part that I was
- 14:59crying laughing and then nearly started crying.
- 15:02Was that the Siamese cats? Well, no. The horribly
- 15:07racist cats. No, it was when the lady goes to
- 15:12the pound and just before, like, she gets brought
- 15:15in, all the dogs are, like, singing but howling.
- 15:19It was... I don't know what it was about it.
- 15:22It was so funny. You fucking laughed. No, yeah,
- 15:25because, like, when they're all singing, it's
- 15:27really lovely, and then it cuts to all of the
- 15:30dogs crying, and I was like, oh my god, this
- 15:33is horrible! Are you broken inside? Why were
- 15:35you laughing at the dogs at the fucking pound?
- 15:38It was funny! You thought it was funny? They
- 15:40were howling and singing away. It was lovely.
- 15:43You're crazy. Singing the blues, Jim. I know.
- 15:46It was really funny. It was all off tune and
- 15:50all of this. And then it started cutting to all
- 15:52the dogs crying. And I was like, oh my God, this
- 15:55is horrible. I can't believe you laughed at that.
- 15:57That's fucking crazy. It was so funny. Just the
- 16:00way that they were singing was... And then, yeah,
- 16:05I started nearly crying. It was horrible after
- 16:08that. I loved this film. This was my first ever
- 16:11favourite film as a child. This was my first
- 16:16ever obsession. I used to walk around with a
- 16:18lady all the time in a lunchbox. Oh, that's so
- 16:23wholesome. Hang on. Walk around with a lady.
- 16:26Did you have like a little figure of lady or
- 16:28it was on your lunchbox? I had both a figure
- 16:30and a teddy bear that came with a VHS. That is
- 16:34adorable. And I had that in there, but I thought
- 16:37it was like a briefcase. And I used to carry
- 16:40that around in a Bible. And I used to tell kids
- 16:42about Lady and Jesus. I thought they were both
- 16:47so cool. Yeah, I used to... Well, I still think
- 16:55Jesus is pretty cool. Choose your path, Western
- 16:58man. Bible in one hand, lady in the other. See,
- 17:05this is a lot. I wanted to be Tramp, and I wanted
- 17:10to be with lady. I don't know in what capacity.
- 17:15Maybe romantic? I mean, yeah, probably, knowing
- 17:18your interest for... I don't know. Disney animals.
- 17:23Well, no, this is the only Disney animal except
- 17:25for the fish from Pinocchio. And the other dog
- 17:28that you wanted to. Which dog? Oh, Peggy. No,
- 17:31that was a joke. I was joking about that. Lady,
- 17:34that was true love. This has cost me a lifetime
- 17:37of dating upper middle class women. This goddamn
- 17:43dog. And I wanted to be Tramp. I wanted that
- 17:49life. That went from wholesome to just so weird
- 17:52so fast. It's not weird. It was pre, like...
- 17:56I was a little boy. I just wanted to put my hands
- 18:00on... I just wanted to stroke her ears. They
- 18:03do look very fluffy. I don't want to fuck the
- 18:08dog now. And I didn't even then. Oh, come on.
- 18:12Grow up. surely you've got you've got something
- 18:16that you probably did the same probably the lion
- 18:19from the lion king simba no yeah probably for
- 18:22you too um what does that mean stop trying to
- 18:28deflect i'm just saying like you two probably
- 18:30feel like you want to do that to the lion if
- 18:32you're bringing that up you probably fancied
- 18:34a disney animal a bit as well You're acting like
- 18:37you're both Puritans for the sake of your listeners.
- 18:40We are Puritans. I don't know, this one just
- 18:42seems too animal -y to me, you know what I mean?
- 18:44Like, it's still a pet dog. It's just, it's a
- 18:46dog. I guess, yeah. She just had nice eyes. Nice
- 18:50ears. I don't know. I did think... I didn't think
- 18:56the character designs were, like, really sick
- 18:58in this. Like, especially, like, Tramp always
- 19:00looks, like, unkempt, but still cute. Like, they
- 19:03do a really good job of balancing that. What
- 19:04kind of dog do you think he is? He's a terrier
- 19:07mix. So he's, like, he's, like, some kind of
- 19:11border terrier mixed with who knows what. He's
- 19:14a bit tall and sexy, isn't he? Like... He's just
- 19:18known as a mutt, isn't he? He's just a stray.
- 19:21So he's a terrier of some kind because he's got
- 19:23that look to him. But then the other thing, who
- 19:26knows? Are you allowed to say mongrel? It's like
- 19:29a slur for dogs, isn't it? It would definitely
- 19:31be a slur in the Lady and the Tramp universe,
- 19:34100%. Because he gets called it by Jock. He's
- 19:38like, you mongrel! Do you know? Right at the
- 19:40end. Did you watch this film, James? Yeah, I
- 19:43just don't remember calling him a mongrel. Oh,
- 19:46is it just before he chases the rat? Yeah. Yeah,
- 19:51yeah, yeah. Oh, the rat in this, by the way,
- 19:54because basically, just to give everyone, we've
- 19:55kind of jumped ahead a bit. The premise is basically
- 19:57like a couple gets a puppy, which is Lady. She's
- 20:00really cute. They love her. But then the couple's
- 20:02going to have a baby, so there's a bit of back
- 20:04and forth on whether or not the dog will get
- 20:06replaced. A couple go on a trip away, and house
- 20:09-sitting is a... wretched woman with two wretched
- 20:12cats so lady runs away she starts dating tramp
- 20:16they come back they save the baby from a rat
- 20:18at the end uh but yeah yeah i wouldn't say that's
- 20:23the end they don't chase the rat the end it's
- 20:26chase the rat fucking sickest chase scene in
- 20:30film history with the two dogs chasing the pound
- 20:33and then it ends oh that was that was so sad
- 20:37where um Spoilers, the... Trusty gets knocked
- 20:42over. Trusty. Oh, man, I was convinced he was
- 20:45dead. I was so sad. Like, Jock, the Scottish
- 20:49terrier, starts, like, howling next to him. And
- 20:52I was like, oh, my God. I looked over at my partner,
- 20:54and she was just like, I can't do this. Trusty
- 20:59did originally die, and Peggy Lee, who plays
- 21:02Lady... was like looking over the storyboards
- 21:06and started crying and had to convince walt disney
- 21:08to change it oh my god i i have written down
- 21:12i think he maybe should have died there uh that
- 21:15was just such a disney force it's just so powerful
- 21:18uh i love that whole sequence i think it's it
- 21:21it was really rousing like it's really um evocative
- 21:25i think as a child that you really like i think
- 21:27this is what made me come back time and time
- 21:30again was that chase so good yeah i just love
- 21:33it it's very i love the way the water looks as
- 21:36they're like scampering around in it and i like
- 21:38when that trust is like this idiot comment relief
- 21:42the whole film and then he's just this force
- 21:44of nature at the end it's so good it's so powerful
- 21:47agreed yeah yeah weirdly i think my favorite
- 21:51parts of the movie were all like the really boring
- 21:53parts i just liked seeing like lady Being at
- 21:56home, being cute, and walking around with Tramp
- 21:59and all that stuff. I like the porn stuff most
- 22:01of this. I like that bit as well, actually. It's
- 22:05all good, I think. The pasta bit is iconic. We
- 22:08don't even need to talk about that. We do, because
- 22:11did you know that Disney didn't want that scene
- 22:14in the film? Why not? What? They just didn't
- 22:18want it. In the 66th anniversary re -release,
- 22:22there was a load of trivia, and one of the things
- 22:24said that Disney did not want that scene in the
- 22:28film originally. That's crazy. Isn't it? Yeah.
- 22:32They're probably the nicest film characters ever.
- 22:35They're just two Italian men who play music to
- 22:39dogs. They are. wingman lovely awesome yeah um
- 22:45i like the implication that he's been on like
- 22:47a million dates with other dogs to that same
- 22:50place and that and those two just probably do
- 22:53the same thing every time good for them great
- 22:56characters did anyone else think that tramp was
- 22:59calling a bitch the entire time no no the first
- 23:04time i heard it i was like what because it's
- 23:09like because he says pitch To me, it sounded
- 23:12like bitch. So I thought he was just like, bitch,
- 23:15let's go. And I was like, huh? I didn't hear
- 23:18that at all, but I've got good hearing. I've
- 23:20got terrible hearing. You need to go to the ear
- 23:23doctor. I mean, I guess this film does have like,
- 23:27I don't know. people doing impressions of people
- 23:30from different races so maybe he did was calling
- 23:34a bitch you know but exactly it's not out of
- 23:36the question it is a female dog i think pigeon's
- 23:39so nice as a nickname i'd love to pull that off
- 23:42it's adorable i don't think i could pull off
- 23:44calling someone pigeon come here pigeon nah you
- 23:48mentioned the cat bit there again though like
- 23:50that is just so out of pocket and like it's like
- 23:53barely in the movie as well it's just like it's
- 23:55not like peter pan where like the native americans
- 23:57are central to it they just come and go like
- 24:00so fast and it's like fucking hell what was that
- 24:02it was it was i forgot it was in this film i
- 24:06thought it was in a aristocats or something like
- 24:09genuinely don't think i've seen this film fully,
- 24:12properly before. Really? Wow. So, yeah, there
- 24:16was so much that I didn't remember. As soon as
- 24:18that, like, she came in and then I heard the,
- 24:21um, the, like, bong! Yeah! I was like, no! I
- 24:29forgot that that was what it's from! But yeah,
- 24:32horrendous. The, um, stereotypical, like, even
- 24:37the design of them as well. They look like, um,
- 24:40Propaganda posters from the wall. I get mad.
- 24:43Yeah, 100%. Oh my God, they're known as Psy and
- 24:48Am. Yeah. Jesus Christ. It's stuff, isn't it?
- 24:53great i like i i generally like love the rest
- 24:56though like i love the hand -painted backgrounds
- 24:58uh it's really nice to watch as well because
- 25:01it's got that really old cinemascope aspect ratio
- 25:03where it's like 2 .55 to 1 instead i think the
- 25:06only ones that do that is this sleeping beauty
- 25:09and wish And Wish was like a throwback to these
- 25:12two. But it looks amazing. Yeah, it's really,
- 25:17really stunning. The animation is beautiful as
- 25:21well. And they must have taken loads of rotoscopes
- 25:23from actual dogs as well. Because the animation's
- 25:28unreal and really uncanny to real life kind of
- 25:34thing. The way Lady wags her tail and stuff like
- 25:37that is just so... Cocker Spaniel. It's great.
- 25:41Well, they would usually use animals as animation
- 25:44reference. When they did 101 Dalmatians, the
- 25:46office was full of Dalmatian puppies. Even for
- 25:49this one, one of the animators had a rat in a
- 25:51cage on his desk to do the end sequence. By the
- 25:54way, in one of the earlier scripts, the rat's
- 25:56name was Herman for some reason. I don't know
- 25:58how his name came up in conversation. Well, that
- 26:02probably implies that he was going to speak.
- 26:05It's me, Herman! Where's your baby? I have a
- 26:11bit of a phobia of rats. I think I've kind of...
- 26:14I'm trying to challenge you at the moment. I'm
- 26:15trying to run up to rats if I see them on the
- 26:17street. you know trying to like look at them
- 26:20pick them up play with them yeah stroking them
- 26:22like a dog but I always had a bit of a phobia
- 26:26of them and I think it stems from this film because
- 26:29there's just something about the way they animate
- 26:31this fucking rat man it's wretched he's horrible
- 26:34he's animated like he's Nosferatu it's mad yeah
- 26:37he's got red eyes all he wants to do is kill
- 26:40a baby he can't speak And, like, nearly all the
- 26:43other animals can speak. Even the, like, racist
- 26:46cats. Yeah. It fights Tramp, and even though
- 26:50Tramp's, like, 20 times the size of him, Tramp
- 26:52walks away limping. It's like, what the fuck
- 26:54did that rat do to him? Because it's all offscreen.
- 26:56I hate that rat. With his wicked little tail.
- 26:59What's that little thing that you always talk
- 27:01about, you two? The little game. The game with
- 27:04all the villains in. Disney villains. Yeah, Disney
- 27:08villains. That rat could be... That silent rat
- 27:11is probably the best villain. I think eventually,
- 27:16once we've gone through a lot of these, we need
- 27:19to do our dream team of Disney villains. But,
- 27:23yeah, I think I agree. The rat could go in there.
- 27:26Also, nice to see a reappearance of man. When...
- 27:31Pardon? Tramp of man, the villain. Oh, yeah.
- 27:37When Tramp and Lady go and chase the chickens.
- 27:40And then there's just a fucking gunshot. Holy
- 27:44shit. That's mad, that bit. Terrifying. Terrifying.
- 27:48The level of antagonism to it... I've got two
- 27:52main questions I've written here, and you don't
- 27:54have to answer both of them. These are more like
- 27:56retorts than anything else. When did people get
- 27:59into dogs? Yes, before this. The dawn of man?
- 28:06Yes. When did dogs start existing in the way
- 28:10we know them now, though? When did a Cocker Spaniel
- 28:13start? When did that happen? Years and years
- 28:17and years and years ago. Because it would have
- 28:20been like early wolves and stuff like that. And
- 28:24then eventually people would have, you know,
- 28:27natural selection. Well, not natural selection,
- 28:30but yeah. It's crazy that we had wolves and now
- 28:33we have these freak dogs. Dogs were domesticated
- 28:38from wolves over 15 ,000 years ago before the
- 28:41advent of agriculture. This is set after that,
- 28:44yeah. No, no, it's actually set before that.
- 28:50But no, I think the thing... No, it's not about
- 28:54the... I understand domesticated dogs existed
- 28:57before the time period this film's set in. But
- 28:59what I'm wondering is, did dog catchers exist
- 29:01in the way they're portrayed in this film? Like,
- 29:04they're a constant, like, threat, and they're
- 29:07running around with a net. Yeah. It's just...
- 29:11You know what? It really fucks me off. Like every
- 29:13fucking talking animal film. always the same
- 29:17shit and i'm not gonna give this one shit because
- 29:18it's from like 1950 goddamn whatever but like
- 29:21everyone you see now the talking dog they get
- 29:24lost they're in the city oh there's a there's
- 29:26an animal control guy it's always the same yeah
- 29:29fucking shit it feels like it's a very american
- 29:33thing though like i can't think of a british
- 29:36film that's got like a dog in it that where the
- 29:39dog goes to the pound kind of thing you know
- 29:42what i mean it's a very american trope kind of
- 29:46thing for these kind of films. Well, the only
- 29:49thing I can think of, I can't think of a British
- 29:50film about a dog, but the Shaun the Sheep movie's
- 29:53got an animal control thing that puts him in
- 29:55the pound. I mean, I'm really struggling with
- 29:58thinking of a dog film about a dog. They're putting
- 29:59sheep in a pound? No, no, no. Preston. No, he
- 30:04puts the sheep in, man. He's after the sheep.
- 30:06The Shaun the Sheep movie, not Wallace and Garnet.
- 30:09Oh, right. Sorry, sorry. That's crazy. You fucking
- 30:12idiot. Listen to the words I say next time, James.
- 30:16Listen and understand them! I like the Irish...
- 30:26and British man having a fight in this film.
- 30:28That was good. Oh, that was fun. I like the Irish.
- 30:33Bold takes only on this podcast. I enjoy the
- 30:40Irish. I think the Irish are pretty cool, aren't
- 30:42they? I like the fight that the Irish and British
- 30:45man have. Yeah, that was really funny. Just as
- 30:49a little thing, if you mention like the way like
- 30:53people with dogs at this time the opening of
- 30:55the film where the husband gives ladies a present
- 30:58at christmas is actually based on something that
- 31:01happened with disney himself and his wife uh
- 31:03disney felt like really bad that he was like
- 31:05kind of neglecting his wife over this like period
- 31:08of time when he's working on a film and like
- 31:10gifted her a pet what a pet what a pet rat no
- 31:15pet dog it was herman he loved dogs a horrible
- 31:18rat in a cage Diane Disney Miller told me at
- 31:23the beginning of the Blu -ray. Oh, that's nice.
- 31:27That's really lovely. Oh, very quickly. Tramp
- 31:30fucked a chihuahua. How did that happen? Yeah.
- 31:33Dogs do whatever they want. I hate all the prison
- 31:36dogs. I'm glad they're in prison. No! Boris the
- 31:39Borzoi was so cute. I liked him a lot. He can
- 31:43rot in prison. I hope they hang him for his crimes
- 31:45of not having a license. I like when he makes
- 31:48a slight remark to communism and he's like, oh,
- 31:51it's like a red flag. I like, well, I don't like,
- 31:58but in the scene that James found hilarious,
- 32:00I thought it was crazy when that dog got sent
- 32:03down the green mile to die. Oh, that was fucking
- 32:06horrible. Were you laughing then, sicko? I was
- 32:08mad. Oh, yeah, I was absolutely howling. I was
- 32:11smacking my knee. I was like, woo! laughing at
- 32:16the puppies all singing i was laughing at dogs
- 32:19singing they should make a ride of that at disneyland
- 32:22like you go down the green mouth of dogs all
- 32:24the animatronic dogs are on the side and you're
- 32:28the dog that's getting put down it takes a photo
- 32:32on your way and it's just a photo of james clapping
- 32:34oh god damn yeah you're sicko james hell yeah
- 32:41brother Cool. So with the original out of the
- 32:44way, it's time to talk about the sequel. Lady
- 32:48and the Tramp 2 Scamps Adventure. Now, normally
- 32:53Andy or I would recap this, but Luke, do you
- 32:58want to recap what happens in this film? Just
- 33:00a quick synopsis, you could say. Yeah, okay.
- 33:04Of the whole film. Yeah, like very briefly. Just
- 33:07a synopsis. We're on a time blower here. Alright,
- 33:11so the year is... What year is it? What year
- 33:14is this fucking... I get... It's sometime after
- 33:1815 ,000 BC. It's 1911. Is it 1911? Isn't it sad
- 33:22that Scamp will one day see the Great War? He'll
- 33:26be a fighting age then as well. So sad. So it's
- 33:301911. It's America. The animations were... And
- 33:35I don't know how much longer this is after Lady
- 33:37and the Tramp won. Probably like a year? About
- 33:40a year and a half. A year and a half? Nice, okay.
- 33:44Yeah, from my calculations. Wait, what? How are
- 33:48you still puppies, though? I don't know. Lady
- 33:51and the Tramp says it's set in 1909. Lady and
- 33:54the Tramp 2 says it's set in 1911. All right,
- 33:57but I think... Oh, no, wait. Wait, wait, wait.
- 34:00No, no, no, no, no. I think this is... I think
- 34:02most of Lady and the Tramp 1 is 1909. And then
- 34:05the Christmas bit with the dogs, I think that'll
- 34:07be like... Christmas 1910. I think so, yeah.
- 34:10And then this is July. You haven't got enough
- 34:11time to fuck. This is July. Because it's nine
- 34:13months to have a puppy, isn't it? Yeah, this
- 34:14is July. Oh, is it? No, it's not. How long does
- 34:18it take to birth a dog? Yeah, good question.
- 34:20About six weeks. Really? It's really quick. I'm
- 34:23pretty sure. Shut the fuck up. Dog pregnancy.
- 34:27Why am I giggling? Dog pregnancy. Yeah, 63 days.
- 34:32Fucking hell. Wow, this could be... christmas
- 34:34two night it doesn't matter do you think scamp
- 34:36came out of the same litter as the other three
- 34:38how did that happen it seems to have yeah it's
- 34:41weird isn't it he's like a mutant i like this
- 34:43really simple way that cartoons always like have
- 34:46like crossbreeding puppies where it's just like
- 34:48this will look like that and that'll look like
- 34:50that like this like yeah like yeah i i'm kind
- 34:53of surprised that they didn't do the like mixing
- 34:56kind of thing because a lot of them do that especially
- 34:58when it's like two weird dogs they'll or Or something
- 35:02like that. It'll be like, they'll have the ears
- 35:04of this one. Like, think of Shrek 2 with donkey's
- 35:09kids and stuff. I refuse to think of those abominations.
- 35:13Those characters work at the end of the first
- 35:17film as like, oh, here's three lovely ladies
- 35:21and then just one arsehole one. But, like, if
- 35:25they'd have thought about making a sequel, I
- 35:27guess they'd have maybe made them all look a
- 35:29bit more visually interesting. Yeah, a bit more
- 35:32unique. Whatever. Scamp is, like, a little prick.
- 35:34And he's just, like, causing... He's running
- 35:37amok. It's Independence Day. And his sisters
- 35:42are horrible. And his mum doesn't speak. And
- 35:46then his dad is, like... He's, like... My dad's
- 35:49so fucking boring. I hate him. I want to live
- 35:52on the street like a rat. And then he runs off
- 35:55to go hang out with some cool, cool dogs at the
- 35:59junkyard. And hilarity ensues. That's exactly
- 36:05what I was thinking. And then... lessons are
- 36:10learned, and the film then ends. Yep. Grass isn't
- 36:14always greener, the movie. Yeah, exactly. Pretty
- 36:17much. This one came out in February 2001. It
- 36:24went up against, well, it didn't really get much
- 36:26of a theatrical release. It did in some countries,
- 36:28as they usually do, but it was only through seven
- 36:32countries, not even the UK at this time. But
- 36:35February 2001 would have been the release of
- 36:37films like Hannibal and Recess Schools Out, two
- 36:41very closely identified films. What a crazy trilogy
- 36:45in the cinema. There's not really any box office
- 36:53to report on it because, once again, as we found
- 36:55out, if it doesn't come out in America, it doesn't
- 36:57get fucking stats. What a shame. It's got some
- 37:00actual... anime is working on it. Because sometimes
- 37:03we find out, Luke, when we're doing this, someone
- 37:06will work on one of these Disney sequels and
- 37:08they never work again. Yeah. Oh, wow. But for
- 37:11this one, you've got some who've actually worked.
- 37:13You've got Daryl Rooney and Janine Russel, who
- 37:16directed it. Rooney did Mulan 2 and Lion King
- 37:202 as well, whereas Janine Russel's mostly a producer.
- 37:22It's written by Tom Rogers, who also worked on
- 37:25Lion King 3 and Little Mermaid, Ariel's Beginnings.
- 37:28Bill Motz and Bob Roth, who both worked on The
- 37:30Big Hero 6. series and the monsters of a zillion
- 37:33series so reasonable creative team behind it
- 37:36yeah yeah and uh daryl rooney also you missed
- 37:40out a big thing he started working at disney
- 37:43in uh 78 and was originally working as a visual
- 37:49effects animator on andy's favorite film tron
- 37:53wow I prefer the second one, but I do like Tron
- 37:561. It is a banging film. God, what a bad year
- 37:592001 was, eh? It wasn't great! I remember being
- 38:04a little boy, I was six, and as I told you, I
- 38:08was obsessed with Lady and the Tramp. I used
- 38:11to carry Lady around in my box, in my briefcase,
- 38:16and I used to keep Tramp at home. because i think
- 38:19you've just seen too much of the streets you
- 38:21know lady was the one who needed to get out in
- 38:26the world i need to show the world uh yeah but
- 38:29i had my lady and my tramp and i used to love
- 38:31lady in the tramp and watch it all the time and
- 38:33i remember seeing in meadow hall the uh the the
- 38:37cardboard cut out for this lady in the tramp
- 38:392 scamps adventure and the video and then a little
- 38:44toy scamp that came with it and i was over the
- 38:47moon i was like oh oh my God, this is it. My
- 38:50moment has finally come. And I remember that
- 38:55was the first time I ever felt disappointment
- 38:58and sadness. Like deeply. I was so disappointed
- 39:03in this. I thought they'd turned Tramp into a
- 39:06fucking loser. And I was so annoyed about it.
- 39:10But that being said, I don't hate it as much
- 39:13as I did when I was six. Okay. that's good i
- 39:16still don't like it but is there anything like
- 39:22about it that you thought like that's actually
- 39:23better than remember or is it just direct and
- 39:25it's like because you're coming into it and knowing
- 39:26that it's like shit i think uh i misremembered
- 39:30tramp's arc i thought he was much more of a like
- 39:33critical arsehole the whole time when in fact
- 39:37he's not that bad It's mainly Scamp who's a prick.
- 39:41Oh. Scamp sucks. Scamp. What an arsehole. I just
- 39:45wrote down instant hatred of Scamp, loser nerd.
- 39:50I hate him. I hate his songs. They're crap. Yeah,
- 39:56I do not like him as a main character. I think
- 39:59he is really shit. Yeah. Yeah, and it's... weird
- 40:04because like you can kind of get at the beginning
- 40:06like oh he does want to be free and play about
- 40:09because he doesn't really get that at home but
- 40:11like quite a lot of the time in the film like
- 40:14stuff's going really badly for him like he's
- 40:16almost getting killed and like they're treating
- 40:18him like shit and like he still is very determined
- 40:21like this is what i want and it's like Are you
- 40:23an asshole? Buddy, come on. He's stupid. He's
- 40:28just being a prick for being a prick's sake.
- 40:31He's not a nice character to watch. He's just
- 40:35a dick. No, and it's not interesting at all.
- 40:37Exactly. There's a point where he and Angel,
- 40:41one of the dogs that he meets at the junkyard,
- 40:44end up going back to his house. And he sees how
- 40:48much his family miss him. And like the baby's
- 40:52crying. They're all so sad. And he literally
- 40:56goes, yeah, whatever. I want to go and fucking
- 40:59roll around in the dirt. What a fucking scumbag.
- 41:03Even the dog's calling him out on it. Like, what
- 41:05is wrong with you? What a fucking loser. What
- 41:09an unlikable protagonist, genuinely. Holy shit.
- 41:14I didn't like really any of the characters in
- 41:16this, to be honest, because... Luke was kind
- 41:19of hitting that there. I know you said Tramp
- 41:21didn't get as bad as you thought he did, but
- 41:23I thought he's just... Him and Lady were a bit
- 41:25more bored in this. There's not really any arc
- 41:27for them to go through. I mean, there's barely
- 41:30any Lady in this anyway. Lady is just completely
- 41:34absent from this whole story. Yeah. He's insulting.
- 41:38Tramp 2. Tramp 2, yeah. Tramp 2, Tramp's awful
- 41:42son. because I think it would have been interesting
- 41:46to explore the dynamic between Lady and Scamp
- 41:49because they're much more their personalities
- 41:52are going to be inherently different but she
- 41:55like loved Tramp I would have liked to see her
- 41:59probably caring for him a lot more than maybe
- 42:02Tramp does would have been interesting but they
- 42:05have no do they even talk to each other lady
- 42:08and scamp maybe like once or twice she rubs her
- 42:11head on his head and then immediately Jim Deere's
- 42:14like stolen the show and he's talking to scamp
- 42:16and I'm like I want to see his mum give a shit
- 42:19about him because I can't relate to this character.
- 42:22And I'm only getting... The main character from
- 42:25the first one. Yeah, I want to get the actual
- 42:27main character from the first one and I want
- 42:29to know what she's doing. But I don't learn anything
- 42:31about her. It's rubbish. Yeah. Really bad. As
- 42:36a little note, you mentioned his name was Jim
- 42:38Dee there. I forgot to mention that before. I
- 42:40love the fact that Lady thinks their name is
- 42:42Jim Deere and darling. It's so sweet. Yeah. follows
- 42:47it on but i like it i like in the first one that
- 42:50you can't really see them much i think that's
- 42:51a huge problem in the sequel you see them too
- 42:54much I was literally just going to bring that
- 42:57up because in the first one, it's from the dog's
- 43:00perspective. You barely see the humans. Like
- 43:03there's a couple of wide shots where you actually
- 43:06see their face and stuff. And in this one, it
- 43:09just throws all of that out the window. And it's
- 43:11just like, here's some weird human characters.
- 43:13And yeah, it's... Because it's not like... Like
- 43:17the first one's very like... creatively driven
- 43:20on that and then the second one just didn't have
- 43:22a vision at all. No, not at all. I felt a weird
- 43:26note because I've watched this on Blu -ray as
- 43:27I usually do. Even the transfer was a bit lower
- 43:30res than usual. It was like they didn't even
- 43:32fuck it. They just slapped it out or whatever.
- 43:34It looked a bit crap as well. Oh my god. It's
- 43:38so sad to get because as a little bit of a palate
- 43:40cleanser after I watched this, I just went straight
- 43:43back and watched the chase scene from Lady and
- 43:45the Tramp again. Hell yeah. And it's crazy. the
- 43:49downgrading animation quality it's so it looks
- 43:53ugly and then I think what I really don't like
- 43:56is that it's a full musical and which is mad
- 44:00because Lady and the Tramp is also a musical
- 44:02but I don't want to hear Tramp singing I just
- 44:06don't. Like, the first one's kind of a musical,
- 44:09but then at the same time, like, there's not
- 44:10that many songs in it. The biggest song is, like,
- 44:14Bella Notre, which is sang, like, it's just a
- 44:16character normally singing a song. Yeah. So I
- 44:18don't really think of that as a musical. But
- 44:19then this has, like, full, like, Les Miserables
- 44:22-level, like, kind of musical numbers where,
- 44:23like, each character's singing about their point
- 44:25of their story. And, like, none of them stick
- 44:28to Landon. Like, it's better than... Luke, we
- 44:31usually have an issue where a lot of these will
- 44:33just have, like... Disney Channel's latest pop
- 44:35star single, The Cops. Oh, that's terrible. And
- 44:38at least it put the effort into doing a musical,
- 44:40but none of them stick the landing. Yeah. Not
- 44:43a single one. No, I think the singers as well,
- 44:46because it's not Scott Wolfe who plays Scamp
- 44:50singing it. It's... Roger Bart. Yeah. He did
- 44:54Hercules. The fucking voice actor for this dog,
- 44:56his surname is Wolfe? Yeah. Crazy. Yeah. Alyssa
- 45:00Milano's Angel. Who's that? she um is in charmed
- 45:06and i think she must have been big in the 80s
- 45:09because i'm pretty sure star -lord names his
- 45:11second ship after her in guardians of the galaxy
- 45:14oh damn i didn't i didn't know there was any
- 45:16like i haven't looked at the cast Well, that's
- 45:19pretty much it, to be fair. There's some Disney
- 45:23regulars, like Jodie Benson, who was Ariel's
- 45:27place lady in this, but that's pretty much it
- 45:31as far as superstars go. And superstars are a
- 45:33big stretch. You've got Jeff Bennett coming back
- 45:36from Return to Neverland and Cinderella 2. He
- 45:41does additional voices in Cinderella 2, but he
- 45:44was Mr. Smee in... in Return to Neverland. Yeah,
- 45:49he's good. And he's also in loads of animated
- 45:53stuff. He's the singing voice for Zazu in The
- 45:56Lion King. I did not know that. He's also additional
- 45:59voices in Mask of the Phantasm. So there you
- 46:02go. Badass. I can't believe Jodie Benson. They
- 46:06got her to voice Lady and gave her two lines
- 46:09the whole film. Yeah, it's fucking wild. She
- 46:14must have just been walking down the corridor
- 46:15on the Disney Animation Studio and pulled her
- 46:17in. Did you just come in here for a second? Strangely
- 46:22enough, the Siamese cats are actually credited
- 46:24in this as well. Tress McNeil and Mary Kay Bergman.
- 46:28And sadly enough, this is actually... posthumous
- 46:32role for Mary Kate Bergman. This is one of her
- 46:34final roles, which is really sad, considering
- 46:36I don't even remember the cat even saying a line.
- 46:38I don't think they said anything, did they? I
- 46:41think all they... I found it weird that they
- 46:43were credited. Yeah, all they did was go, I'm
- 46:47pretty sure. That's it. They didn't say anything,
- 46:50because I'm pretty sure they were scared of them
- 46:52saying anything. This came out the same year
- 46:55as Scooby -Doo and the Cyberchase, which she
- 46:57was also in as Daphne. Oh, hell yeah. Oh, is
- 47:01this the person who was in South Park? Yeah,
- 47:04she did every female voice in South Park and
- 47:07then after a pass and now it's three or four
- 47:09actresses because no one could get on that. Oh,
- 47:12no way. That's sad. Oh, she was Timmy Turner
- 47:15in Fairly Odd Parents as well. Yeah. What an
- 47:19absolute powerhouse of a voice actor. She's fantastic.
- 47:23I noticed a lot of voices in this that I recognise.
- 47:28Phil and Lil! Phil and Lil! Oh man. They sucked.
- 47:35I hated the lady looking kids. I inherently like
- 47:38those two voices but they don't fit these two.
- 47:42No they do not. Neither does Patrick Star. Is
- 47:47that the third one? Yeah. What? No, that's...
- 47:50No, he's the sheepdog. Oh, yeah, yeah, of course.
- 47:54That literally just sounds exactly like Patrick.
- 47:57Yeah. Yeah. He headbutts through the wall. Now
- 48:01that's using your head! I hated all of the Junkyard
- 48:05Dogs. I hated them all. They all sucked. The
- 48:07Junkyard Dogs suck. Yeah, I totally agree. I
- 48:11think I hated every single character in this,
- 48:14except for Lady and the Tramp, and that was just
- 48:17purely riding on the will that the first film
- 48:21gives us. Yeah. I will say that I understand
- 48:24Tramp more now as a man. as a boy I thought my
- 48:29hero has died and this husk, who is this guy
- 48:35but I don't know he's a beta male now yeah I
- 48:41was saying that at six, I was fuming but then
- 48:44now I think now i think i think he's a bit more
- 48:48reasonable he's still got his edge but he just
- 48:51wants to be a more responsible character i think
- 48:53you know yeah i think almost there's something
- 48:55interesting about that but um i don't know This
- 48:59film's fucking shit. It's not great, is it? I'm
- 49:02not going to lie. I usually write about three
- 49:04or four pages of notes in my notebook on this.
- 49:06In this one, I didn't even finish a page because
- 49:07I got about... Andy, I'm the exact same. Holy
- 49:11shit. I got about to where Scamp joins the Junkyard
- 49:14Dogs and I thought, like, I don't really have
- 49:15anything else to say on this. It's such a boring
- 49:17concept of, like, nothing's really going on.
- 49:21It's so predictable as well. Yeah. What did you
- 49:24think of the one Junkyard Dog who's a paedophile?
- 49:28Huh? The one that's interested in puppies. Yeah,
- 49:31the one who's like, I've got puppy fever. Also,
- 49:33hang on. So, right. I've got a lot to say about
- 49:37the junkyard dogs. So there's two other things
- 49:41with that. So we're assuming that Scamp is a
- 49:44puppy because he's still basically the same size.
- 49:47So Angel has had five homes. Yes. And she's interested
- 49:53in a puppy. So either... Like, this all happened
- 49:57in really quick succession. Or the Doberman is
- 50:01also a paedophile. So it's either Angel is a
- 50:04paedophile because she's going after a puppy,
- 50:05or the Doberman's a paedophile because he's going
- 50:11after a young dog as well. I think I'd prefer
- 50:14if Bruno was a paedophile. I'd prefer there to
- 50:17be no paedophiles. Yeah, I'd prefer none. Out
- 50:19of the two, I hope... Which dog's Bruno? Is it
- 50:25Bruno? Who's Bruno? He's the main guy. Is it
- 50:28Bruce? No, the... That's Buster. Buster. Shit,
- 50:33sorry. Buster Rhymes. I thought you were talking
- 50:35about the fucking Encanto guy. No, Buster. Buster
- 50:40is like... His girl is Angel, but Angel is, I
- 50:45assume, a puppy. But then she's been owned by
- 50:48five people. But also it looks like she's a puppy
- 50:50Akita, which is going to be a huge dog. Exactly.
- 50:54According to Wikipedia, she's a Pomeranian slash
- 50:58husky. How did a Pomeranian husky breed? It's
- 51:03crazy. I have no idea. It's the will of the dogs.
- 51:07Where there's a will, there's a way with dogs.
- 51:09They're just being clever now. They're just trying
- 51:12to be cute here because they're like, oh, we
- 51:13don't have to specify the age of this character.
- 51:16It's like, no, you need to address that this
- 51:19character sounds and acts like a paedophile.
- 51:22Yeah. It's not right. Wait, which one's the paedophile
- 51:27again? All of them! There's three paedophiles!
- 51:29Andy, there's three paedophiles, so there's Buster,
- 51:33there's Angel, potentially, and Ruby, the Afghan
- 51:39hound who has a soft spot for puppies. It's,
- 51:44um... It's Buster or Angel, isn't it, though?
- 51:47Like, one of the two. Yeah, so it doesn't matter
- 51:49which way, one of them's a paedophile. Let's
- 51:52say the villain is. Yeah, let's say the villain.
- 51:55Yeah, let's do that. Not the one that gets adopted
- 51:59into a home with another four puppies. Imagine
- 52:01if Jim Deere, though, accidentally adopted a
- 52:06paedophile. That would be so embarrassing. Also,
- 52:08these people have got, like, this is now their
- 52:10seventh dog. That's just too many. They were
- 52:14struggling already with Scamp. Yeah. They were
- 52:17really struggling with him, and now they're just
- 52:19chucking another fucking stray into the mix.
- 52:22Did they adopt Trusty and Jock as well? No, they're
- 52:25the name. Because it seems like they did. Oh,
- 52:27okay. But they are hanging out with them. It
- 52:28seemed like they did. Yeah. They're hanging out
- 52:31with them and not the owners of the dogs, which
- 52:33is weird. Yeah. I liked it at the beginning of
- 52:36this one, I think. Oh, no, it's the end of the
- 52:38last one, actually, when they're like, oh, here
- 52:40comes Jacques and Trusty, and they're just walking
- 52:41down the drive by themselves. Yeah, they're like,
- 52:44come on in, make yourselves at home. They've
- 52:47come for Christmas. It's really sweet. It's really,
- 52:50really sweet. Their owners should be. yeah they
- 52:54should have they should have brought in their
- 52:55owners into this one at least they talk well
- 52:58about their owners in the last one they're like
- 53:00oh you should come live with us because our owners
- 53:01love us but like they clearly don't yeah they're
- 53:04never there for you jesus so do you think that
- 53:07um scott wolf was deserving of his award of best
- 53:11animated character performance at the video premiere
- 53:13award dvd exclusive awards absolutely fucking
- 53:17not did he do the singing himself no oh then
- 53:21no I thought the vocal performances of that,
- 53:24a world without fences. I thought that one was
- 53:28quite good. I did not. I do not agree. Not yet.
- 53:33I don't think any of them. I don't think any
- 53:35of them are put to bed to put together bad, like
- 53:37performance wise. I just think the songs are
- 53:40just fucking shit. Like, I don't know who wrote
- 53:42the songs for this, but I will say like the soul
- 53:44is nothing. There's like a world without fences
- 53:48is. just as good as any song from the Wicked
- 53:52soundtrack. Oh my god. Oh my goodness. It's exactly
- 53:56the same to me. That's what all of Wicked sounds
- 53:59like to me. It's this fucking dog singing about
- 54:03wanting to not have fences anymore. Wow. That's
- 54:07all of Wicked to me. Defying fences. so these
- 54:13songs were written by melissa manchester who
- 54:16is a prolific american singer songwriter like
- 54:20she was it's not like a disney channel pop star
- 54:22she was like 50 at the time she was doing this
- 54:24and norman gimbal who was even older he was uh
- 54:28like just under just over 70 at the time he was
- 54:31doing this um and he's done like loads of work
- 54:35as well um especially on like musicals and stuff
- 54:38so i don't know why they turned out so terrible
- 54:41i hated that the fucking moon was out in the
- 54:43daytime all the time oh it pissed me off when
- 54:47he said when he said wild dogs howl at the moon
- 54:50It's the middle of the day, mate. They haven't
- 54:53shown the moon before that as well. And they're
- 54:56like, wow. But then the shot after. Yeah. It's
- 54:59like, oh, God, that pissed me off. The shot after
- 55:02has a giant Arkham Asylum -sized moon. It's ridiculous.
- 55:07The moon is too big. I hated seeing it in the
- 55:09daytime over and over again. It sucked. Set the
- 55:12film at night. Frank Welker was a big freak again.
- 55:16He was the angry dog. The big angry whatever
- 55:21fucking dog that chases Scam. That dog's crazy.
- 55:24I hate that he can't speak. Yeah, I found that
- 55:27weird. I thought it was going to actually say
- 55:30something in Frank Welker's voice when I saw
- 55:32that it was him. And no, it just goes... I can't
- 55:38believe that they had a saber -toothed bear in
- 55:40this. Like, dog. That is a villain. And I hate
- 55:43that they did a little fake -out that Scamp had
- 55:46been killed by it. Oh, yeah. I didn't care. Like,
- 55:49you're trying to do a trusty to me, but I don't
- 55:51care about Scamp. I hope he dies. But, yeah,
- 55:53crazy short as well. Hour and three minutes.
- 55:56Yeah, it felt like a million years, though. It
- 56:00felt so long. Is it shorter than the first one?
- 56:03Yeah. Or is it longer? It's shorter. Without
- 56:06credits, it's shorter. that's mad because the
- 56:10first one was a breeze and this was like you
- 56:13say it was like it felt like an hour 40 oh my
- 56:15god it felt so long yeah so this this was an
- 56:19hour hour and three minutes six minutes of credits
- 56:21after yeah the first one's an hour 15 but yeah
- 56:24the the difference in pacing like because this
- 56:28one this one just doesn't have a story and like
- 56:30and then the character's just such an ass like
- 56:33i can't believe the bit where he betrays his
- 56:36girl and ditches his dad i'm like yeah off how
- 56:40does he portray he goes like he tells them she's
- 56:42the one who wants to live with a family not me
- 56:44and i'm like yeah so he casts her out he betrays
- 56:49he gets rid of her but then it like it shows
- 56:52him like i feel like they must have had a different
- 56:55moment or like a different ending planned because
- 56:59it seemed like you know when Tramp opens the
- 57:03gate and then Scamp has stood there staring.
- 57:06It seems like it's a moment where he's going
- 57:08to run after his dad and it just feels like they
- 57:11changed it really quickly. And they must have
- 57:14done that a few times in this film because there's
- 57:17definite parts where they've had to either cut
- 57:21to something that was already happening. Like
- 57:24there's loads of animation, not errors, but it's
- 57:28like... where they just didn't animate something,
- 57:31so they just cut to it kind of thing. It feels
- 57:34like they've had to stitch the last part of it
- 57:37together. That's my opinion. I could be completely
- 57:40wrong. But yeah, otherwise it's just like kind
- 57:44of lazy animation. And I would say some of the
- 57:47worst animation that we've had in a Disney sequel
- 57:49so far. Yeah, I mean, it's probably got the same
- 57:52budget as most of the ones we've covered, but
- 57:55there's not really any creativity or any energy
- 57:59of it. No, absolutely not. They're just kind
- 58:04of like churning it out and getting it done,
- 58:05aren't they? Yeah, I hate how big Scamp's head
- 58:08is. It's like they thought, oh, this will make
- 58:10him cuter. And it just doesn't. Well, they must
- 58:13have been banking on him being cute. Because
- 58:14like you say, they bundled it with the toy of
- 58:17him. And I can see you seeing the image of him.
- 58:20And then being like, oh, he's quite cute. I want
- 58:22to try that. But he fucking sucks. Yeah, he sucks.
- 58:25Yeah, I threw the toy, like, not away, but I,
- 58:28like, put him away into, like, a chest. I was
- 58:30like, I don't want to ever look at that again.
- 58:33Not only are you a house dog scamp, but you will
- 58:35never leave this chest. You're never leaving
- 58:37the chest! They'll serve you right for letting
- 58:42down your girl. You horrible dog. Well, she's
- 58:47not his girl, Luke. She's no one's girl. She's
- 58:50no one's girl. As they say maybe 54 times in
- 58:54this. She's Jim Deere's girl now. Fucking...
- 58:58Shut the fuck up. Shut the fuck up. I hate you.
- 59:05I hate that Tramp has become like... I hate that
- 59:09this whole film feels like it doesn't have an
- 59:11identity that's related to Lady and the Tramp.
- 59:13It feels like it's just trying to do other Disney
- 59:15things and failing. It tries to do this epic
- 59:18musical thing that doesn't feel thematically
- 59:22right for the original. It tries to make Tramp
- 59:26fucking Mufasa and that's boring. Everything
- 59:29they do just sucks. I do have something else
- 59:33to say, because you just brought it up quite
- 59:34nicely there. The identity of the first film
- 59:37is the romance, 100%. And the romance in this
- 59:42one is such an afterthought, where it's like,
- 59:44I don't know what is the drive? What are we meant
- 59:49to care about? Because I guess we're meant to
- 59:52care that Scamp wants to be an outdoors dog.
- 59:56Why? The romance is really boring. There's not
- 1:00:01really any reason why he'd fall for Angel or
- 1:00:03vice versa because they have no chemistry. Yeah.
- 1:00:07And they're babies. And they're also children.
- 1:00:12Like the Lady and the Tramp bit. Or he's a victim.
- 1:00:16Yeah. I don't like seeing them eat spaghetti
- 1:00:19together because they're basically just two little
- 1:00:22babies. That's... So fucking unearned. How dare
- 1:00:27you stand where he stood. I don't like it. But
- 1:00:31yeah, unearned. It kind of doesn't make sense
- 1:00:32as well, because Scamp used to always go there,
- 1:00:35but they just turn up. It's such shit fan service.
- 1:00:40Yeah, 100%. Wouldn't the Italian men be like,
- 1:00:45hey, wait a minute, you'll have an owner. The
- 1:00:48owner's missing you. And tell them. Surely they
- 1:00:54know now. I bet they may. Maybe. Get back in
- 1:00:57your chest. Get it back in the chest. What are
- 1:01:01you doing out? Fuck this dog. Yeah. Fuck this
- 1:01:07film, to be honest. On to our next section. Let's
- 1:01:13rank it. Let's see where this sits with the other
- 1:01:16Disney sequels that we've done. So Luke, you're
- 1:01:20new here. What we do is we put it into our little
- 1:01:23machine. What's the machine like? It's a big
- 1:01:26machine like you'd find in Willy Wonka that makes
- 1:01:29you ever laugh in Godstoppers. It's like loads
- 1:01:30of steam poking out and it's like... Yeah, there's
- 1:01:33a lot of valves that you have to turn and a steam
- 1:01:37whistle. It's actually like when we got it. It
- 1:01:40said on the instructions that it should only
- 1:01:42be operated by five men at a time, but we've
- 1:01:44managed so far. Yeah. It's like, you know the
- 1:01:47video of the guy playing that giant piano that
- 1:01:52he pulls loads of stuff on? It's basically that.
- 1:01:55Right. And we put all of our thoughts in, and
- 1:02:01it tells us whether it's a bargain bin. These
- 1:02:06are the rankings. Okay, please. It's also really
- 1:02:09bad for the environment and it uses a load of
- 1:02:11AI as well. Yeah, it's like... It's a Bitcoin
- 1:02:15miner as well. We'll just leave it on. Hit me
- 1:02:21with these categories. So, right at the bottom,
- 1:02:26we've got bargain bin. This is where, you know,
- 1:02:28it comes out, it goes straight in the bargain
- 1:02:31bin. No one wants to see it. You won't even pick
- 1:02:33this up on a rainy day kind of thing. Then we've
- 1:02:38got straight to video. It goes on the shelves
- 1:02:41for a little bit. It's all right. It might not
- 1:02:43be the best, but, you know, on a rainy day, you
- 1:02:47might pick it up. Then we go up to Diamond Edition.
- 1:02:51Ooh, mama. Ooh, this has come out. It's got,
- 1:02:54ooh, maybe a little slipcover or something like
- 1:02:59that. It's a little bit of a fancier DVD we've
- 1:03:01got here. And then, right at the top, we've got
- 1:03:04Disney Classics. Mamma mia. Maybe it's a steelbook.
- 1:03:08Maybe it's got some extra features. It's got
- 1:03:10three discs in it. What is going on? And that's
- 1:03:14the top. That's the tippy top. Almost like meeting
- 1:03:19the original, or even better, exceeding it. Creme
- 1:03:22de la creme, some would say. So, boys, where
- 1:03:26are you putting it? I know where I'm putting
- 1:03:28it. Bargain bin. Bargain bin. This sucked. It
- 1:03:36has no soul. It's got nothing going for it. It's
- 1:03:41got absolutely nothing going for it. It doesn't
- 1:03:45live up to the original. It shits on the original.
- 1:03:49And Scamp is the worst protagonist we've had
- 1:03:53so far. I hate him. I actually think this is
- 1:03:55the worst one we've done. I think I agree. What
- 1:03:58a pleasure for me to be here for it. It's really
- 1:04:03annoying because it's not even interestingly
- 1:04:05bad. Like Cinderella 2? Yeah, there's nothing
- 1:04:10like that. It feels like... there was no solid
- 1:04:13idea for it but everyone just kind of came in
- 1:04:15give it a solid try of making something out of
- 1:04:18it and there's not really much to say on it it's
- 1:04:21just really boring and soulless and lifeless
- 1:04:23and it's probably like exactly what you'd expect
- 1:04:26from these yeah yeah i hate it yeah yeah it's
- 1:04:29it sucks it ruined my it it muted my girl it
- 1:04:34it it ruined my man It put your girl in the chest.
- 1:04:42And also, I really liked Scamp at the end of
- 1:04:46the first Lady and the Tramp. I think that gag
- 1:04:48where he's pulling at the jumper, I think that's
- 1:04:52all you ever had to see of this character to
- 1:04:55understand everything you ever want to know about
- 1:04:56him. So I don't need to hear him singing about
- 1:05:00how he wants to sit in garbage all day. I just
- 1:05:03don't care. Just fuck off and leave my girl and
- 1:05:08my man alone. Do we want any Letterboxd reviews?
- 1:05:11Because I can't be bothered. Go on, James. Come
- 1:05:14on, do your goddamn job. Come on. Do what we
- 1:05:17made you for. So this has a weighted average
- 1:05:22of 2 .75 on Letterboxd. So it's above average,
- 1:05:30which is... It also has 44 fans. So 44 people
- 1:05:38on Letterboxd think this is one of their favourite
- 1:05:41films. Damn. That's insane. So this is One and
- 1:05:44a Half Stars by Jessica Wessica. Used to watch
- 1:05:49this at my grandma's house when I was little.
- 1:05:51Not only was it not as good as I remember, it
- 1:05:54was, in fact, not good at all. five stars from
- 1:05:59punk ass nerd who said okay like this was my
- 1:06:03favourite movie growing up because I don't care
- 1:06:06what anyone says wow what a hard man I know it's
- 1:06:15a proper junkyard dog yeah that's a fucking junkyard
- 1:06:18dog right there that is a junkyard dog This is
- 1:06:25one and a half stars from Hal, and it says, well,
- 1:06:28at least it gave us this image. It has a hyperlink.
- 1:06:31If you click on it, nothing happens. Right. Amazing.
- 1:06:35What a great analogy for this film. Honestly,
- 1:06:39for real. Hey, comment on it now, and be like,
- 1:06:42what does this mean? Can you please post it?
- 1:06:45We're doing a podcast. What are you talking about?
- 1:06:48Two and a half stars. Lady and the Tramp fucked
- 1:06:51Raw Dog for this movie to happen. Oh my god.
- 1:06:55That's Eddie of the JPEG. When did they shag?
- 1:06:58I mean, I think they did on the hill, but when
- 1:07:01did they have these babies? When did they...
- 1:07:05What was the turnaround? Pretty soon. I think...
- 1:07:08It was 63 days before the end of the last film.
- 1:07:14Because her gestation period was quicker than
- 1:07:17trusty's leg healing. I found that mad. that's
- 1:07:23like a 60 maybe like a 70 day break that's crazy
- 1:07:28I mean yeah to be fair like it was meant to have
- 1:07:31killed him so yeah maybe he broke every other
- 1:07:33bone in his body that was the only one that hadn't
- 1:07:36healed yet oh god yeah yeah one star from Sonic
- 1:07:45Tiger god good god I am sick of these Disney
- 1:07:49sequels I feel you, brother. Cool. So there we
- 1:07:56go. James, I think you've missed one of the Letterboxd
- 1:08:00reviews. Have I? Yeah, because there's a review
- 1:08:05from Joe Terone, who does the theme music for
- 1:08:08not only our podcast, but Luke's as well. Hang
- 1:08:11on. Is this where it starts? This is where it's
- 1:08:16revealed that I don't actually follow Joe Turone.
- 1:08:19You don't follow Joe Turone? He gave it three
- 1:08:22stars and a like and he said, this soundtrack
- 1:08:24needs to be on Spotify. Fuck off. No. Damn. That's
- 1:08:32crazy. Can we retire our theme music, please?
- 1:08:39Oh, that's crazy. Oh, dear. Bless him. Fair play.
- 1:08:45Yeah, bless him. Anyway, there we go. That was
- 1:08:50a film, wasn't it? Yeah. Sure was. Yeah. Not
- 1:08:54good. Aw, Luke, thanks for joining us. Yeah,
- 1:08:58thank you so much for having me. I'm sorry it
- 1:09:01was in a film that made you all feel so sad.
- 1:09:04I don't think this episode would have been releasable
- 1:09:08if you weren't a guest, to be honest. Yeah. I
- 1:09:13think we would have just been too sad. It can't
- 1:09:19be the worst one, can it? I've heard about Pocahontas
- 1:09:212. That makes me feel ill. I hope it's the worst
- 1:09:25one because I can't do this again. That was just
- 1:09:28so soulless and nothing. I don't know how we
- 1:09:31can talk about another one of these. Come on,
- 1:09:36get it together. It's going to be okay. No, I'd
- 1:09:39rather, I'd generally rather it was like really
- 1:09:42bad. Like, it was just kind of like, it gave
- 1:09:46me nothing. It just, it was like nothing. If
- 1:09:49I didn't watch it five minutes ago, I would have
- 1:09:52forgotten it. Yeah, genuinely. If I had watched
- 1:09:55this last night, I think by, I've forgotten most
- 1:09:59of it already. It's just, there's nothing to
- 1:10:02it. It's just. It's nothing. It sucks. I can't
- 1:10:06believe I think I like it more than you two.
- 1:10:10I think you do, yeah. I came on thinking this
- 1:10:13was my least favourite film of all time and I
- 1:10:15like it more than you two. I just love the song
- 1:10:18about no more fences. No more fences. It sucks.
- 1:10:23A world without fences. Or something, I don't
- 1:10:26know. Maybe you and Joe can get it on Spotify.
- 1:10:29Yeah. Oh, God. What do you do now? Well, we finish
- 1:10:39and we go home and we leave the machine running.
- 1:10:41We get some Bitcoin out of that. Yeah, we're
- 1:10:44done. That was it for Lady and the Tramp 2. Andy,
- 1:10:49where can the people find you? You can find me

- 1:12:57for our music. We love it, even though you like
- 1:13:00the music of Scamp's Revenge or whatever this
- 1:13:04fucking film is called. Scamp's Revenge. And
- 1:13:08a huge thank you to Jordan G, our producer and
- 1:13:12the person that did the artwork and helped come
- 1:13:17up with the idea with Andy as well. We'll see.
- 1:13:21What's he doing producing -wise? Right now? Nothing.
- 1:13:24Yeah, what's he doing for you as a producer?
- 1:13:26Shh. I heard that. I was like, fuck, is he editing
- 1:13:31this or something? That's crazy. No, we granted
- 1:13:35him the title of producer because he basically
- 1:13:37developed it with us. I was going to say, well,
- 1:13:40with us, with you. I was hearing all these thank
- 1:13:46yous and then I was like, where the fuck is mine?
- 1:13:49Thank you to Luke Thomas for joining our podcast
- 1:13:51and making this episode releasable. And keeping
- 1:13:54me in a chest, which I'm going to go back to
- 1:13:57now. I'm joking. Thank you. Thank you, Luke Terry,
- 1:14:01for letting Luke Thomas out of your chest. He
- 1:14:06let me come out to play. One night only. We're
- 1:14:10going to send him back. He's ringing the bell
- 1:14:12now. I'm crawling back to him later. Oh, God.
- 1:14:18Now you've seen life on the other side. You're
- 1:14:20like, oh, I didn't realise how good we had it.
- 1:14:23They don't even have their cameras on. They don't
- 1:14:29even look at each other. They're animals. Oh,
