- 0:00Hello, and welcome to a special combined episode
- 0:02of the Becker's Healthcare and the Becker Private
- 0:04Equity and Becker Business Podcast.
- 0:06My name is Chanel Banger, and I'm delighted
- 0:08to speak with Sourav Bansali,
- 0:10a partner at Health Velocity Capital, who joins
- 0:13the podcast today to share insights into healthcare
- 0:15investing and a bit more. Saurabh, thank you
- 0:18so much for joining me. Thanks, Chanel. Thanks
- 0:20for having me. Perfect. Well, to get us
- 0:22started, can you introduce yourself and share how
- 0:25your approach to healthcare investing has evolved over
- 0:28the years?
- 0:29Yeah. Absolutely.
- 0:30So I'm one of the partners and cofounders
- 0:32here at Health Velocity Capital.
- 0:34I'm based out of our San Francisco office.
- 0:36We also have a Nashville, Tennessee office.
- 0:39We're approaching our tenth year anniversary
- 0:41and we'll be imminently deploying our third fund
- 0:44next year in 2026.
- 0:46Since
- 0:47Health Velocity Capital is founded, you know, our
- 0:49our guiding principles have remained fairly consistent.
- 0:52We're investing in businesses that are making the
- 0:55future future of health care
- 0:57more affordable,
- 0:58sustainable, and consumer friendly.
- 1:00Our team has a pretty unique combination
- 1:04of
- 1:05hundred plus years of investing and operating experience
- 1:09having backed
- 1:10or built many of the first movers in
- 1:13our sector to
- 1:14either market leadership or market formation altogether, changing
- 1:18the way how
- 1:20care is delivered, paid for,
- 1:22administered.
- 1:23We've backed
- 1:24a number of category leaders including
- 1:27Teladoc, IVX Health, Livongo,
- 1:30MD Live, Change Healthcare, Ginger Headspace,
- 1:34Enobelcare,
- 1:35even Castlight Health.
- 1:37And you asked about
- 1:38our approach. So,
- 1:41our approach,
- 1:42we think really sets us apart.
- 1:45First, you know, we focus on fundamentals that
- 1:48really determine durability,
- 1:51for businesses. You know, this means customer incentives
- 1:54and understanding unit economics, sales velocity, and capital
- 1:56intensity.
- 1:58So
- 1:58we can really understand
- 2:01how early advantage for these businesses becomes repeatable
- 2:05scale.
- 2:06Second,
- 2:07one of our unique approaches is that we
- 2:09uniquely engage our network to produce real outcomes,
- 2:12and that
- 2:14is in the form of customers,
- 2:16partnerships,
- 2:17talent,
- 2:18and ultimately a faster path to scale. You
- 2:21know, our LPs
- 2:22include many of the nation's largest and most
- 2:25influential health care organizations,
- 2:27plus about a 100 over a 100
- 2:29senior health care executives,
- 2:31both current and former, that collectively represent organizations
- 2:34that ensure something like a 175,000,000
- 2:37Americans operate over a thousand hospitals,
- 2:40with national pharmacy PBM and health care IT
- 2:43reach.
- 2:44And from that, we've generated over 2,000,000,000
- 2:48in
- 2:49partnership revenue across 200 plus commercial relationships.
- 2:53So we like to say is network is
- 2:55common, but commercial pull through is rare and
- 2:57we work really hard,
- 2:59and take a lot of pride in driving
- 3:00that commercial pull through.
- 3:02Thank you so much. That's very impressive. And
- 3:04now kind of thinking about
- 3:06right now and kinda going into
- 3:092026,
- 3:10what would you say
- 3:11are the emerging trends or friction points in
- 3:13health care,
- 3:15that you think investors tend to overlook?
- 3:18You know, what I've learned over the past
- 3:21fifteen years in this sector is that
- 3:25health care is just is just too complex
- 3:27for the casual participant,
- 3:29and this is an industry that doesn't really
- 3:31do well with hype.
- 3:32So to really making a lasting improvement with
- 3:35their capital, investors need to understand
- 3:38the industry over cycles
- 3:40and really connect the dots on how
- 3:42dollars flowing through the system
- 3:45drive incentives
- 3:47in those decisions and dollar flows in the
- 3:49system
- 3:50as well as the operational friction that really
- 3:52slows that innovation.
- 3:54So just going back to sort of our
- 3:56engagement model with our network, you know, we
- 3:58have this really consistent and constant feedback loop,
- 4:02from those who really shape the market.
- 4:05So in theory and in practice,
- 4:07you know, our proximity
- 4:09gives us a bit of an unfair advantage.
- 4:11We can spot what's broken before the market
- 4:13does because we hear it directly from the
- 4:15operators that are feeling the pain. You know,
- 4:17one of our investments
- 4:19is a business called IVX Health,
- 4:21which is an investment that was born from
- 4:23our network. It was an introduce it was
- 4:24an introduction from,
- 4:26one of our strategic network investors and individual.
- 4:29And
- 4:30we've we've we made we made the investment.
- 4:33We recruited
- 4:34the CEO, the chairman,
- 4:37the CFO, and a variety of other executives,
- 4:40and
- 4:41they have really done an a remarkable job
- 4:44turning that into a billion dollar platform redefining
- 4:47the infusion experience.
- 4:49So
- 4:50that's a little bit about our approach, some
- 4:52of the trends that we're seeing, the friction
- 4:54points that we encounter.
- 4:56You know, on top of that, we're obviously
- 4:58seeing a lot in AI,
- 4:59and,
- 5:01that's gonna encounter a a big opportunity and
- 5:04a number of friction points as well.
- 5:06Got it. Got it. And we all know
- 5:08that health care innovation has been at a
- 5:10rapid pace lately.
- 5:12What would you say the most exciting
- 5:14bit of health care or area of health
- 5:16care innovation has been for you in the
- 5:18past six to eighteen months? And could you
- 5:20give us any particular companies that embody these
- 5:23approaches?
- 5:24Yeah. Of course.
- 5:25So
- 5:27today,
- 5:28my
- 5:28through line,
- 5:30has really been backing companies that can participate
- 5:32in that large dollar flow market that I
- 5:34mentioned before
- 5:36and those that can disproportionately
- 5:38benefit from
- 5:40market or regulatory challenge.
- 5:42Just given how broken how much felt so
- 5:44much health care is and, you know, there
- 5:45are a number of companies that I've backed,
- 5:47that really sit in those dollar flows. Octave
- 5:49is participating
- 5:51in,
- 5:52you know,
- 5:52in the mental health space, broadly speaking, and
- 5:55providing high quality care to those needing it,
- 5:58from a mental health therapy standpoint.
- 6:00Torch Dental is effectively building the Amazon of
- 6:03the dental industry, making it better, faster, cheaper,
- 6:07for dentists to procure their materials
- 6:09and consumables.
- 6:10You know,
- 6:12that's
- 6:13all these companies
- 6:14really sit in the big dollar flows and
- 6:16win when we when health care becomes more
- 6:18efficient. On top of that, you know, more
- 6:21recently, I've been drawn
- 6:23to areas like revenue cycle management, and I
- 6:25AI enabled services, specialty pharmacy and drug management,
- 6:29next generation health plans for small and mid
- 6:31sized businesses,
- 6:33because those are all
- 6:35areas that have been
- 6:36part of the broader health care ecosystem for
- 6:39decades.
- 6:40And AI enablement is really driving more efficiency,
- 6:45operational leverage, and ultimately great sustainable businesses. You
- 6:48know, we recently invested in a company called
- 6:50SHERCO,
- 6:51which is a
- 6:53a business in the defined contribution space within
- 6:56health care. There there's a an act passed
- 6:58by the Trump administration called ICRA, the individual
- 7:01coverage health reimbursement arrangement.
- 7:03And, SHERCO is an administrator, an ICRA administrator
- 7:06where they help
- 7:08small to midsize
- 7:09employers
- 7:11offer defined contribution plans versus defined benefit. It's
- 7:14kind of the,
- 7:16the move historically that we've made from pensions
- 7:19to four one case, but it's happening in
- 7:21health care or health insurance. And when we
- 7:23were looking at that space, nearly every carrier
- 7:25we engage
- 7:26had a
- 7:28dedicated point person and emerging ICRA strategy.
- 7:32And the folks that we talked to, the
- 7:34consultants consistently described ICRA as a key tool
- 7:36in their arsenal.
- 7:38So, you know, it's just going back to
- 7:39that flywheel with our LPs and our network,
- 7:42where we can see opportunities and where we
- 7:44can really help drive adoption.
- 7:47Got it. Got it. And now you've given
- 7:48us a lot of actionable insights for health
- 7:50care leaders and for business leaders looking for
- 7:53insights into health care investing.
- 7:55I'm curious, what do you personally look for
- 7:57in founders or teams that consistently deliver meaningful
- 8:00impact?
- 8:01It's a great question.
- 8:03If I were to point to
- 8:05one characteristic that I personally,
- 8:09admire in founders
- 8:11that has led to,
- 8:13I'd say, outsized returns. It's it's this concept
- 8:15of resourcefulness.
- 8:17It's, you know, resourcefulness is core to both
- 8:19who we are at Health Velocity and the
- 8:21founders we back. The best founders turn
- 8:24turbulence into tail end. You know, one of
- 8:26our portfolio companies, Octave, is a great example
- 8:29of when
- 8:30resourcefulness
- 8:31meets the right founder. You know, we invested
- 8:33pre COVID when you know, when the world
- 8:35changed, the CEO sort of reimagined
- 8:37the business
- 8:38Basically overnight, pivoted from virtual clinics to, I
- 8:41I should say, physical clinics to a virtual
- 8:44first model
- 8:45integrating with both payers and EMRs
- 8:49and even exploring how AI can power more
- 8:53efficient navigation, and the business
- 8:55has really been accelerated as a result of
- 8:58that resourcefulness from the founder.
- 9:00Absolutely.
- 9:01Well, sir, Rob, I wanna thank you for
- 9:02your time today. But before I let you
- 9:04go, is there anything else that listeners should
- 9:06know?
- 9:07If you are a,
- 9:09a growth stage
- 9:10resourceful founder, you know who to reach out
- 9:12to.
- 9:13Perfect. Well, sir, I wanna thank you once
- 9:15again for your time today and for sharing
- 9:17your insights on the Becker's health care and
- 9:19the Becker private equity and business podcast. Thank
- 9:21you so much.
- 9:22Wonderful.
- 9:23Thanks, Chanel.
