• 0:02
Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
• 0:06
rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, January 17th.
• 0:11
Guard your flow and fix your focus.
• 0:14
Have you ever noticed how quickly everything can change?
• 0:17
One moment you're confident, steady, feeling good about where
• 0:19
you are, and the next one comment, one mistake, one
• 0:23
unexpected problem hits, and suddenly your peace is gone.
• 0:26
Your thoughts spiral, fear creeps in, and it feels like
• 0:29
  you're sinking emotionally and spiritually.
• 0:32
That swing can feel confusing, but Scripture shows us exactly
• 0:36
why it happens. Proverbs chapter 4, verses 20 to
• 0:39
21 speaks like a loving parent trying to protect a child.
• 0:43
My son, be attentive to my words.
• 0:46
Incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your
• 0:49
sight. Keep them within your heart.
• 0:51
God is telling us that what we allow into our hearts matters
• 0:54
more than we think. Our hearts aren't neutral
• 0:56
  spaces. They are storage places.
• 0:59
Whatever we consistently take in truth or lies, faith or fear,
• 1:03
eventually shapes how we respond when pressure comes.
• 1:06
We see this played out so clearly in Matthew chapter 14.
• 1:10
Peter steps out of the boat and does the impossible.
• 1:12
He walks on water toward Jesus. As long as his focus stays on
• 1:16
Jesus, he's steady. But verse 30 says, but when he
• 1:20
saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink.
• 1:22
He cried out, Lord, save me. The storm didn't change.
• 1:26
Jesus didn't move. The only thing that shifted was
• 1:29
Peter's focus. The moment he locked onto the
• 1:31
wind instead of the Savior, fear rushed in and his faith started
• 1:35
to sink. That's such a real picture of
• 1:37
everyday life. The wind looks like anxiety,
• 1:41
comparison, rejection, bad news, or uncertainty about the future.
• 1:45
When those things take center stage in our minds, fear takes
• 1:48
over fast. But when God's Word is rooted
• 1:51
deep in our hearts, it steadies US.
• 1:53
Proverbs later says the heart is the wellspring of life.
• 1:57
That means everything flows from it.
• 1:58
Your words, reactions, confidence, and choices.
• 2:02
Guarding your heart doesn't mean ignoring reality.
• 2:05
It means choosing what gets the loudest voice.
• 2:07
It means being intentional about what you watch, what you listen
• 2:11
to, what you scroll, and what you replay in your thoughts.
• 2:14
If your heart is constantly filled with fear, negativity,
• 2:17
and comparison, fear will spill out when life shakes.
• 2:20
But when your heart is filled with God's truth, peace, and
• 2:23
promises, faith rises even in the storm.
• 2:26
The beautiful part of Peter's story is this.
• 2:29
When he started to sink, he cried out, Lord save me.
• 2:32
And Jesus immediately reached out and caught him.
• 2:35
Even when your focus slips, Jesus is still close.
• 2:38
He's ready to steady you again. So guard what flows into your
• 2:41
heart. Fix your focus on Jesus, because
• 2:44
what fills your heart will determine whether you walk in
• 2:47
faith or sink in fear. Let's pray.
• 2:49
Heavenly Father, help me be intentional about what I allow
• 2:52
into my heart. Teach me to guard it carefully
• 2:55
and to keep Your Word planted deep within me when storms rise
• 2:59
and distractions pull up my attention.
• 3:01
Help me fix my eyes on Jesus instead of my fears.
• 3:04
Fill my heart with truth, peace and faith and keep me steady no
• 3:08
matter what comes in Jesus name, Amen.
• 3:12

• 3:15

• 4:30
Bible reading plan. Proverbs chapter 4 verses 20 to
• 4:35
23 World English Bible. My son, attend to my words.
• 4:40
Turn your ear to my sayings. Let them not depart from your
• 4:43
eyes. Keep them in the center of your
• 4:45
heart, for they are life to those who find them, and health
• 4:48
to their whole body. Keep your heart with all
• 4:50
diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life.
• 4:53
Matthew chapter 14 World English Bible At that time Herod the
• 4:58
Tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus and said to his
• 5:01
servants, This is John the Baptizer, he is risen from the
• 5:04
dead. That is why these powers work in
• 5:07
him. For Herod had arrested John,
• 5:09
bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias his
• 5:12
brother Philip's wife. For John said to him, It is not
• 5:16
lawful for you to have her. When he would have put him to
• 5:19
death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a
• 5:22
prophet. But when Herod's birthday came,
• 5:24
the daughter of Herodias danced among them and pleased Herod.
• 5:28
Therefore he promised with an oath to give her whatever she
• 5:30
should ask. She, being prompted by her
• 5:32
mother, said, Give me here on a platter the head of John the
• 5:35
Baptizer. The King was grieved, but for
• 5:38
the sake of his oaths and of those who sat at the table with
• 5:41
him, He commanded it to be given.
• 5:43
And he sent and beheaded John in the prison.
• 5:46
His head was brought on a platter and given to the young
• 5:48
lady, and she brought it to her mother.
• 5:51
His disciples came, took the body, and buried it.
• 5:54
Then they went and told Jesus. Now when Jesus heard this, he
• 5:57
withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place apart.
• 6:01
When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from
• 6:03
the cities. Jesus went out, and he saw a
• 6:06
great multitude. He had compassion on them and
• 6:09
healed their sick. When evening had come, his
• 6:12
disciples came to him saying, This place is deserted and the
• 6:15
hour is already late. Send the multitudes away that
• 6:18
they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.
• 6:22
But Jesus said to them, they don't need to go away, you give
• 6:25
them something to eat. They told him we only have here
• 6:28
5 loaves and two fish. He said bring them here to me.
• 6:32
He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass, and he
• 6:35
took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven,
• 6:39
he blessed, broke, and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the
• 6:42
  disciples gave to the multitudes.
• 6:45
They all ate and were filled. They took up 12 baskets full of
• 6:48
that which remained leftover from the broken pieces.
• 6:52
Those who ate were about 5000 men in addition to women and
• 6:56
  children. Immediately Jesus made the
• 6:58
disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other
• 7:01
side, while He sent the multitudes away.
• 7:04
After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the
• 7:07
mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come he was
• 7:10
there alone, but the boat was now in the middle of the sea,
• 7:14
distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
• 7:17
In the 4th watch of the night Jesus came to them walking on
• 7:20
the sea. When the disciples saw him
• 7:22
walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying It's a ghost,
• 7:26
and they cried out for fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to
• 7:29
them, saying, Cheer up it is I, don't be afraid.
• 7:32
Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, command me
• 7:35
to come to you on the waters. He said, come.
• 7:39
Peter stepped down from the boat and walked on the waters to come
• 7:41
to Jesus. But when he saw that the wind
• 7:44
was strong, he was afraid and beginning to sink.
• 7:46
He cried out, saying, Lord, save me.
• 7:49
Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and
• 7:52
said to him, You have little faith, why did you doubt?
• 7:55
When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
• 7:58
Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, You
• 8:01
are truly the Son of God. When they had crossed over, they
• 8:04
came to the land of Jenna Serret.
• 8:06
When the people of that place recognized him, they sent into
• 8:09
all that surrounding region and brought to him all who were
• 8:12
sick. And they begged him that they
• 8:14
might just touch the fringe of his garment.
• 8:16
As many as touched it were made whole.
