Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The government has told Sport New Zealand to scrap its
- 0:03Speaker 1: transgender guidelines. Can like completely scrap them. It was originally
- 0:06Speaker 1: asked to review them, now being told just stay out
- 0:09Speaker 1: of it all together. Thank you very much. Individual sports
- 0:12Speaker 1: organizations will continue to make the call around gender and
- 0:16Speaker 1: community sport. Row Edges from Save Women's Sport joins me
- 0:19Speaker 1: this morning, Row, good morning.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Good morning line.
- 0:21Speaker 1: They were only guidelines to begin with. Is this a
- 0:24Speaker 1: big deal?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Yeah, it is because unfortunately sport needs doing to hold
- 0:28Speaker 2: the funding leaders for sports throughout the country, and so
- 0:31Speaker 2: they all felt compelled to adopt them. You know, we
- 0:35Speaker 2: really welcome this decision to dump them because it supported
- 0:38Speaker 2: boys and men in the male advantage claying and girls
- 0:40Speaker 2: and women's sport, and it was an ideological policy that
- 0:44Speaker 2: while the intent I know was honorable, it was obviously
- 0:47Speaker 2: injective to include males who identify as females and women's
- 0:50Speaker 2: sport couldn't be done without compromising seness and sagetography email athletes.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is we're talking about community sports here, right, It's
- 0:58Speaker 1: not elite sport, is there?
- 1:00Speaker 2: No?
- 1:00Speaker 1: But is that not a different kettle of fish?
- 1:03Speaker 2: It is totally not a different kill of fish. Community
- 1:06Speaker 2: sports is all sport up until you represent your country,
- 1:09Speaker 2: So it includes regional competitions, national age grade competitions. It
- 1:13Speaker 2: is the pathway through to allege sports. You know, it's
- 1:16Speaker 2: the ends in safety matters at elite level, it matters
- 1:18Speaker 2: at community level too.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Ro what happens because it's the individual organizations, the bodies
- 1:25Speaker 1: that set their own rules. So do you think that
- 1:28Speaker 1: they will listen to this or not listen to this?
- 1:31Speaker 1: I mean, what have any of them changed their rules
- 1:34Speaker 1: based on the old guidelines to begin with?
- 1:37Speaker 2: Yeah, they already have tras on New Zealand and boxing.
- 1:39Speaker 2: New Zealand have already moved to change their guidelines and
- 1:42Speaker 2: they protect the female category, and a lot of other
- 1:44Speaker 2: sports have had theirs in review. I think waiting on
- 1:46Speaker 2: this decision, the landscape of transgender inclusion sport has evolved
- 1:50Speaker 2: significantly since those guiding principles were first introduced. At the time,
- 1:54Speaker 2: sports did need some help because the IOC had made
- 1:57Speaker 2: this announcement which stunned the world opening up the female
- 1:59Speaker 2: category and treating women as nothing more than men with
- 2:02Speaker 2: lower testosterone. But most international sporting federations now has moved
- 2:06Speaker 2: to protect the female category and this allows our national
- 2:09Speaker 2: federations to follow foods.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Okay, right, do you hate trains people? This is whatever.
- 2:15Speaker 2: We want. We want everyone to be included and but
- 2:18Speaker 2: we play sport with our bodies, not our identities, so
- 2:21Speaker 2: it needs to be in the category of your biological tech.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Appreciate your time this morning, wrote Edge Save Women Sport
- 2:26Speaker 1: Australasia New Zealand spokesperson.
