- 1:56Speaker 1: we will be diving into a multitude of details from
- 1:59Speaker 1: day three of Buffalo Bill's training camp. Week one as
- 2:04Speaker 1: a hold, Hold as a whole man. We're already not
- 2:08Speaker 1: even a full minute in. You got our first flow,
- 2:10Speaker 1: so week one as a whole, Day three of training
- 2:12Speaker 1: camp in detail as well. I went to each day
- 2:15Speaker 1: of training camp this week, so I have lots of
- 2:18Speaker 1: first hand notes, a lot of aspects to get into.
- 2:21Speaker 1: We had kind of a major development today at day
- 2:25Speaker 1: three at Bill's camp and one of like the not
- 2:29Speaker 1: good variety.
- 2:29Speaker 3: We'll probably lead off with that and that player as
- 2:31Speaker 3: a whole.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But I know it's been harder to get to training
- 2:35Speaker 1: camp this year kind of than ever before. So questions, thoughts, comments, concerns.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna say this a lot throughout the episode. Anything
- 2:41Speaker 1: and everything you folks got, put it into the chat.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I will make this as engagement based as we can
- 2:46Speaker 1: here on the show, as we tend to do here
- 2:49Speaker 1: on Disguise Coverage anyway. But yeah, I know there's a
- 2:52Speaker 1: lot of questions, thoughts, you know, how did this player? Look,
- 2:54Speaker 1: what's been going on with this? You know, how's this rookie? Look?
- 2:57Speaker 3: How is this position group doing? How is this side
- 2:59Speaker 3: of the ball.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So, just in case I don't naturally cover some of
- 3:02Speaker 1: the things that are on your folks minds, feel free
- 3:04Speaker 1: to put it up into the live chat. If you're
- 3:05Speaker 1: not watching live, leave it in the comments on YouTube,
- 3:08Speaker 1: get at me on Twitter, tweet at me, dm me,
- 3:11Speaker 1: get at me on Blue Sky, post at me, DM you,
- 3:14Speaker 1: anything and everything. Yeah, let's you know, make this engagement
- 3:18Speaker 1: friendly as we possibly can. On this show. We're going
- 3:22Speaker 1: to dive right into it with the Day three and
- 3:25Speaker 1: week one training camp insights. We're going to lead off
- 3:27Speaker 1: with the somewhat kind of negative. I mean, it is
- 3:32Speaker 1: a negative. We'll just find out how big of a
- 3:35Speaker 1: negative it is. CJ. Gardner Johnson, who in my estimation,
- 3:41Speaker 1: has been the best player in Bill's camp so far,
- 3:44Speaker 1: not just from the defensive side of the ball. Offensively
- 3:47Speaker 1: and defensively. CJ. Gardner Johnson has been the best Bills
- 3:50Speaker 1: player throughout training camp this first week. It started with
- 3:55Speaker 1: a lot of communication pieces. It started with him making
- 3:58Speaker 1: adjustments on the field. You know, the off motion We're
- 4:00Speaker 1: seeing a lot of checks already from the Bills defense
- 4:02Speaker 1: in terms of, you know, what coverages they're running based
- 4:04Speaker 1: on the look they're getting presented.
- 4:05Speaker 3: You know, if they're going from a.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Three by one, do it two x two, if it's
- 4:09Speaker 1: you know, more of a spread, going into a condensed look,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you know the type of motion that's happening. And CJ.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson has been at the forefront of that communication,
- 4:19Speaker 1: really being the guy in the back end who's checking everything.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He's signaling to d All Forerd actually d offering him.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Have been good in communication with one another. Alferd is
- 4:26Speaker 1: kind of looking to him starting a call, they'll kind
- 4:29Speaker 1: of communicate, relay it within one another. But a huge
- 4:33Speaker 1: guy in that machine has been CJ. Gardner Johnson given
- 4:36Speaker 1: everybody direction and then off the field, he's working with
- 4:40Speaker 1: all kinds of DBS like going over technique and positioning
- 4:43Speaker 1: and you know if if a receiver, if you're lined
- 4:45Speaker 1: up in this spot on the receiver, you know what
- 4:46Speaker 1: to do with your hands here, your feet here. There's
- 4:48Speaker 1: been a lot of good dialogue and discourse with him
- 4:51Speaker 1: and Cole Bishop and d Alford and some of the
- 4:53Speaker 1: other corners as well. And safeties as well. He's been
- 4:56Speaker 1: talking a lot with cornerbacks coach Java Lai, He's been
- 4:59Speaker 1: talking a lot with Jim Leonard like he's been a
- 5:02Speaker 1: true leader on and off the field, which has been
- 5:04Speaker 1: great to see. And then he's been making plays, good
- 5:06Speaker 1: run fits. You know, if bullets were live, he would
- 5:08Speaker 1: have had multiple tackles already in and around the line
- 5:10Speaker 1: of scrimmage. You know, whether he's in the box pre
- 5:12Speaker 1: snap or spur, or are coming from depth and fitting
- 5:15Speaker 1: the run. Multiple good plays and coverage, you know, plays
- 5:18Speaker 1: on the ball, but also matching routes. That's the thing
- 5:20Speaker 1: to note as well. We're seeing more match coverage from
- 5:22Speaker 1: these safeties.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Bishop and CJ.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson have really been good at that. Their their
- 5:28Speaker 1: athleticism allows them to pick up these crossers or these
- 5:31Speaker 1: inbreaking routes, drive on them, close on them, line up
- 5:35Speaker 1: in true man coverage and go at guys. But from today,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and nothing's been confirmed as of now, I see multiple
- 5:44Speaker 1: folks putting comments into the chat already. Yeah he went down.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I didn't see him go down. I saw just kind
- 5:50Speaker 1: of the aftermath. Not to make it sound more dramatic
- 5:51Speaker 1: than it was, but I saw him go down. I
- 5:54Speaker 1: didn't see him go down. I saw the aftermath. I
- 5:56Speaker 1: just saw a bunch of players crowded around a guy.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Trainers crowded around a guy, and it was CJ.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Gardner Johnson.
- 6:02Speaker 1: He gets up, He's not really able to put any
- 6:04Speaker 1: weight on his right leg for me to me, look
- 6:07Speaker 1: like knee ankle like kind of just that lower half
- 6:10Speaker 1: of the leg wasn't able to put any pressure on
- 6:11Speaker 1: it or weight on it. Gets helped off the field
- 6:13Speaker 1: a little bit, gets taken into the tent, goes into
- 6:17Speaker 1: the tent, and this is something that you know, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: kind of noted right away. They bring a cart over.
- 6:23Speaker 1: They caught him back to the locker room. He walks
- 6:26Speaker 1: out of the tent. So how I could see I
- 6:28Speaker 1: could see him directly coming out of the tent based
- 6:30Speaker 1: off of where I was sitting.
- 6:31Speaker 3: He comes out of the tent, he's barefoot.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He walks to the cart, gets on the cart, and
- 6:36Speaker 1: they take him back to the locker room. Something I
- 6:39Speaker 1: also noted, and this is I'm gonna say this right
- 6:41Speaker 1: off the beth. This is pure speculation because I do
- 6:43Speaker 1: not know, and I'm not going to be the person
- 6:44Speaker 1: who's like a body language reader. I'm not trying to
- 6:47Speaker 1: surmise too much or put too many things out there,
- 6:50Speaker 1: but right before CJ. Gardner Johnson came out of the tent,
- 6:56Speaker 1: Brandon Bean went into that tent, came ont of the
- 7:00Speaker 1: tent and.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Looked a little stressed.
- 7:02Speaker 1: He started walking on the field, and I want I
- 7:04Speaker 1: wanted to see, like, Okay, is he gonna go to
- 7:06Speaker 1: Jim Lenard's, He gonna go to Jim Brady, Joe Brady.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Is he gonna go to Joe Dana's. You gotta go
- 7:10Speaker 1: to Jaba Lai. He kind of made his way into
- 7:12Speaker 1: the field and then stopped and came back. So from
- 7:16Speaker 1: my from my estimation, it looked like they called, uh
- 7:20Speaker 1: Brandon Bean into that tent, kind of maybe told him something. Uh.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Now we're getting reports, I know Dion Dawkins has said,
- 7:27Speaker 1: you know that CJ. Gardner Johnson is okay. I saw
- 7:30Speaker 1: a bunch of folks putting that into uh the.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Chat, you know, Deon.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It's being reported now even by like yeahoo sports, Dion
- 7:38Speaker 1: Dawkins saying, uh, c J. Gardner Johnson is okay after
- 7:41Speaker 1: sustaining an apparent non contact lower body injury during training camp, However,
- 7:46Speaker 1: the Bills have not yet provided an official update on
- 7:48Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson's status. Uh. Dion Dawkins said, uh, he can walk,
- 7:53Speaker 1: he's all right. I got the message from the coaches
- 7:56Speaker 1: that he's all right and they're going to do their protocol,
- 7:58Speaker 1: their protocol. But CJ is okay. So that's what Dean
- 8:01Speaker 1: Dawkins is saying. Nothing official as of now. There's been
- 8:04Speaker 1: some videos that have come out of his achilles being
- 8:09Speaker 1: worked on, it looking like in apparent Achilles injury, the
- 8:14Speaker 1: initial descriptors or you know, kind of of the incident
- 8:17Speaker 1: saying that it is something Achilles related. I am not
- 8:23Speaker 1: a doctor or a physical therapist or a surgeon, so
- 8:26Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sit there and be like.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yep, they looked like Achilles to me.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I will say from how he was moving. I didn't
- 8:33Speaker 1: think when how he was walking out of the tent,
- 8:35Speaker 1: because again I was up in the bleachers. I literally
- 8:37Speaker 1: was able to look down and I had a perfect
- 8:39Speaker 1: vantage point of c J. Gardner Johnson before all the
- 8:44Speaker 1: beat people ran to like get videos and pictures of
- 8:46Speaker 1: him being carted off, which I thought, well, I understand
- 8:48Speaker 1: it's their job, but I thought that was a little
- 8:49Speaker 1: heartless to a degree, but he.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Was walking out barefoot.
- 8:53Speaker 1: It didn't seem like his achilles was gone, which is
- 8:57Speaker 1: kind of how it's being made out to me. But again,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm not a doctor, and I don't want to speculate.
- 9:00Speaker 1: I'm just reporting kind of what I saw. Oh no,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I'm not quoting anybody in specific, Andrew, I see your
- 9:06Speaker 1: comment there. I'm I'm just going off of multiple people
- 9:09Speaker 1: have posted video showing the trainers kind of working on
- 9:12Speaker 1: his achilles, and so I think I guess that's the
- 9:15Speaker 1: report that it is achilles injury Achilles based, but again.
- 9:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 9:20Speaker 1: My biggest thing and then that I want to hit
- 9:21Speaker 1: on is he did go down. He wasn't able to
- 9:24Speaker 1: put any you know, weight on his right leg as
- 9:27Speaker 1: he was coming off. He walked a little bit, got better,
- 9:30Speaker 1: walked out of the temp barefoot to the cart. Not
- 9:32Speaker 1: a lot of steps, but walk barefoot to the cart,
- 9:34Speaker 1: got on the cart, didn't seem to distraught, was kind
- 9:37Speaker 1: of just taking the tape off his hands. But again,
- 9:40Speaker 1: I don't know him as a person, so he could
- 9:42Speaker 1: have been absolutely shattered as a person, and I would
- 9:44Speaker 1: have no idea. But yeah, he walked out of the tent,
- 9:46Speaker 1: got carted to the back. The bigger thing for me
- 9:48Speaker 1: is again just on field, how good he's been. He's
- 9:51Speaker 1: been a leader on and off the field already in camp,
- 9:53Speaker 1: chopping it up with coaches, a lot of a lot
- 9:56Speaker 1: of technique talk and you know, working with guys and
- 10:00Speaker 1: and saying you know, hey, yeah, if the receivers in
- 10:02Speaker 1: this position, this is what you want to do, going
- 10:04Speaker 1: over technique and responsibilities and assignments.
- 10:07Speaker 3: He's been.
- 10:08Speaker 1: He's been sincerely great these first I mean like two
- 10:11Speaker 1: and a quarter days because he went down roughly kind
- 10:14Speaker 1: of early on day three, but he again, he was
- 10:18Speaker 1: the best player on both sides of the ball for
- 10:20Speaker 1: me the first two days of camp, and he's been great.
- 10:23Speaker 1: So it would suck if he goes down, But obviously
- 10:25Speaker 1: we'll keep our ears to the ground and if anything
- 10:27Speaker 1: drops while we're doing this episode, feel free you put
- 10:29Speaker 1: it into the chat.
- 10:30Speaker 3: But yeah, CJ.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson has been great, best player for the Bills
- 10:33Speaker 1: in training camp on both sides of the ball. He
- 10:35Speaker 1: goes down today, now we're all kind of just waiting
- 10:38Speaker 1: on pins and needles and hoping he's healthy. He he's
- 10:42Speaker 1: gonna make a big difference in this defense already, you
- 10:45Speaker 1: know him, him and Coole Bishop. And this will tind
- 10:47Speaker 1: of the next piece. I want to talk about just
- 10:49Speaker 1: what we're seeing from the coverage. You know, more match coverage,
- 10:52Speaker 1: more man coverage, more single high stuff. But CJ and
- 10:55Speaker 1: Bishop have been so good, like I mentioned, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 1: matching on inbreakers, cross and routes, man covering on guys.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That athleticism, that pairing bat that back there and how
- 11:06Speaker 1: they fit together is a real potential benefit and bonus
- 11:11Speaker 1: for this Bills team this year. And they've looked good
- 11:13Speaker 1: already in camp. Granted it's only you know, small sample size.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I thought it was interesting today the Bills started to
- 11:18Speaker 1: work in some dime on defense, six defensive backs for
- 11:21Speaker 1: those who don't know when they would do that, which
- 11:24Speaker 1: was really cool. Uh, Cole Bishop was going down as
- 11:29Speaker 1: like another slot player, apex player, and Geno Stone was
- 11:33Speaker 1: one of the deep safeties. So you know, if we're
- 11:35Speaker 1: playing the you know, say it's a two x two
- 11:37Speaker 1: formation to kind of make it easy for everybody. If
- 11:39Speaker 1: it's two by two formation for the offense, right, you've
- 11:42Speaker 1: got Christian Benford and Max Harriston is your outside corners. Okay,
- 11:47Speaker 1: you've got d Alford and Cole Bishop as your two
- 11:51Speaker 1: slot players or your apex players. Apex is just another
- 11:53Speaker 1: way of saying, uh, the first man inside the outside corner.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So d and Bishop as your your two slot players
- 12:01Speaker 1: or your apex players. And then the two deep safeties
- 12:03Speaker 1: were Gino Smith and c J and Gardner Johnson. That's
- 12:07Speaker 1: what Dime looked like when CJ was out there. The
- 12:10Speaker 1: linebacker in Dime Andrew was Torol Bernard, and we're gonna
- 12:14Speaker 1: get into Bernard and some other linebacker stuff in a
- 12:17Speaker 1: little bit. And then when CJ went down, they kept
- 12:25Speaker 1: Cole Bishop as that apex or slot spot. And then
- 12:29Speaker 1: it was Geno Stone and Damar Hamlin who were the
- 12:32Speaker 1: safeties in the back.
- 12:34Speaker 3: And then when they were in nickel or base when CJ.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson went down, Geno Stone and Damar Hamlin kind
- 12:40Speaker 1: of rotated in and out with one another with Cole Bishop.
- 12:43Speaker 1: When CJ first went down, it was Hamlin who was
- 12:47Speaker 1: in there with the ones, and then the next segment
- 12:49Speaker 1: of team, it was Geno Stone in there with the
- 12:51Speaker 1: ones with Cole Bishop.
- 12:54Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Obviously this is a potential, you know, trickle down effect,
- 12:58Speaker 1: cascading effective. CG. Gardner Johnson goes down and impacts obviously
- 13:02Speaker 1: the starting lineup in a significant way. You have to
- 13:04Speaker 1: thrust Geno Stone or Tomorrow Hamlin, which I know a
- 13:07Speaker 1: lot of people are stressed about, into potentially a starting role,
- 13:10Speaker 1: or maybe it's Jayleen Kilgore time we'll see. And then
- 13:13Speaker 1: obviously that impacts you know, your dying packages, some of
- 13:16Speaker 1: your versatility, a lot of stuff right there. There is
- 13:18Speaker 1: no if it's genal Stone, if it's jamor Hamlin, if
- 13:21Speaker 1: it's even if it's Jayalen Kilgore, you're not gonna be
- 13:23Speaker 1: able to do the same stuff that Bishop and CJ
- 13:26Speaker 1: were gonna do together because of CJ's experience, his effectiveness,
- 13:31Speaker 1: and again just how much of a communicator and adjuster
- 13:33Speaker 1: and leader he's been on the field. He has been
- 13:35Speaker 1: getting everybody set on the back end. He has been
- 13:38Speaker 1: barking out the calls when everything's been happening. When you
- 13:44Speaker 1: know when ships are happening, motions are happening, change of formation,
- 13:46Speaker 1: he's communicating that. Jalen Kilgore has been largely working with
- 13:50Speaker 1: the third team. I didn't see I saw some posts
- 13:53Speaker 1: I forget who it was from. I saw some posts
- 13:55Speaker 1: that said he had multiple interceptions today.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I didn't see that, So.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's not true. I'm just saying I
- 14:04Speaker 1: didn't see the multiple interceptions. I also think some of
- 14:07Speaker 1: the pass breakups he's been credited with through the first
- 14:09Speaker 1: two days of camp were past interference, and he also
- 14:13Speaker 1: got like he's I don't want to be like negative Nancy,
- 14:17Speaker 1: but uh, there's been some deep throws that he's gotten
- 14:21Speaker 1: pass breakups on where he got beat and his eyes
- 14:24Speaker 1: were in the wrong spot and guys got behind him,
- 14:27Speaker 1: and then the ball was underthrown, so it gave him
- 14:30Speaker 1: a chance to make a play on the ball. And
- 14:31Speaker 1: then his play on the ball was more past interference
- 14:34Speaker 1: than it was anything else. But the athleticism is still showing.
- 14:38Speaker 1: He had a really nice play underneath.
- 14:40Speaker 3: On day two.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Yeah, yesterday, I think on Jackson Hawes, Jackson Hawes ran
- 14:47Speaker 1: like a hitch route from the slot and kill Gore
- 14:50Speaker 1: was it was it was? I think it was cover three.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Kil Gore was the down safety covering the flat and
- 14:55Speaker 1: he saw it, triggered on it, punched right through the hands,
- 14:58Speaker 1: got a nice pass breakup, So we'll see. Yeah. I mean,
- 15:01Speaker 1: Kilgore's athleticism is showing. It's been nice to see. I
- 15:05Speaker 1: haven't seen the things that from today that others reported,
- 15:09Speaker 1: you know, the interceptions and all the plays on the ball.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I didn't see that today and some of the other
- 15:16Speaker 1: stuff like earlier in the week that you know he
- 15:18Speaker 1: was getting credited for. He still made a play, but
- 15:21Speaker 1: for me it would have been past interference. And even
- 15:23Speaker 1: before that he got beat. Guys are getting behind him
- 15:27Speaker 1: and and that's still not God. I don't think he's
- 15:29Speaker 1: ready yet, but the athleticism is there. I'm super excited
- 15:32Speaker 1: to see him in the preseason a ton. I would love,
- 15:35Speaker 1: no disrespect to DeMar Hamlin or anybody else, I would
- 15:38Speaker 1: love to see Jaylen Kilgore play every single snap at
- 15:40Speaker 1: safety in the preseason. Like I Gino Stone doesn't necessarily
- 15:44Speaker 1: need the reps. He kind of is what he is.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Hamlin is what he is. You know, you'll give them
- 15:48Speaker 1: both reps to see what happens. But I would much
- 15:50Speaker 1: rather get Jaylen kil wore as many reps as physically
- 15:53Speaker 1: possible in the preseason and kind of speed up his
- 15:56Speaker 1: development timeline as quickly as possible to kind of tap
- 15:59Speaker 1: into who and what he is kind of see from there,
- 16:03Speaker 1: tying into that linebacker conversation as I noted a bunch today.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So Torol Bernard and Dorian Williams have both largely been
- 16:15Speaker 1: out for the majority of the offseason. Bernard recovering from
- 16:18Speaker 1: his ankle injury or lower body injury from last year.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Dorian picked up I forget what it was like something
- 16:28Speaker 1: I've never heard of before. Dorian Williams got like a
- 16:30Speaker 1: some kind of knee fracture, like a lateral knee fracture
- 16:33Speaker 1: or something that I haven't heard of before. Either. Williams
- 16:36Speaker 1: and Bernard have been practicing these first couple of days
- 16:40Speaker 1: of camp, but not really taking seven on seven reps
- 16:43Speaker 1: and not really taking anything for team. And when I
- 16:46Speaker 1: say team, I mean like eleven on eleven in case
- 16:48Speaker 1: anybody doesn't know what I mean when I say team
- 16:51Speaker 1: or when I post about it. So it's largely been
- 16:55Speaker 1: Caleb E. Larms Or and Keantha Jenkins as the you know,
- 16:58Speaker 1: the starting linebackers, the linebackers.
- 17:00Speaker 3: With the ones on defense today.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Terrel Bernard and Dorian Williams started off in seven on
- 17:06Speaker 1: seven together and then when team came around Dorian Williams
- 17:10Speaker 1: wasn't in for that, but it was Terrel Bernard and
- 17:13Speaker 1: Caleb Alarms Or but what so that in and of
- 17:17Speaker 1: itself is notable, but it could have. If we want
- 17:20Speaker 1: to play Devil's advocate, and we still can, it could
- 17:21Speaker 1: have been. You know, maybe Williams isn't up to speed yet.
- 17:24Speaker 1: They're still working him back in a little by little.
- 17:27Speaker 1: But so much of the conversation this offseason has been
- 17:29Speaker 1: those two guys being out and how it's given Caleb
- 17:32Speaker 1: Alarms or the opportunity to see all these reps with
- 17:36Speaker 1: the ones and get all these reps, get all these reps,
- 17:39Speaker 1: get all these reps, and you know, it's been reported
- 17:41Speaker 1: by coaches, multiple guys have been you know, said, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: he's taking advantage of it. Jim Lendard talked about him
- 17:47Speaker 1: on the day two training camp presser, saying he's taken
- 17:50Speaker 1: advantage of it. You know, he plays with low emotion.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You know, he's a leader, he's a communicator, all this
- 17:54Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Right, The big note from today for
- 17:57Speaker 1: me was not that it was Or and Bernard that
- 18:05Speaker 1: were out there. It was that Bernard was at the
- 18:07Speaker 1: week sidelinebacker spot or the will and Caleb elarms Or
- 18:11Speaker 1: was the mic that in and of itself is notable.
- 18:15Speaker 1: And then even at the end of practice when they
- 18:18Speaker 1: were kind of doing more of the walkthrough stuff, it
- 18:20Speaker 1: was Bernard and Dorian Williams that were out there together.
- 18:24Speaker 1: But again Bernard was at the will, Dorian was at
- 18:28Speaker 1: the mic to rel Bernard. In both situations with Kilgore
- 18:31Speaker 1: or with the kilber Uh, with elarms Or and with Dorian,
- 18:36Speaker 1: Bernard is the one calling the plays still, but he
- 18:40Speaker 1: was more of the weak side linebacker. He was more
- 18:42Speaker 1: of that will. So when they're running three by one right,
- 18:46Speaker 1: you have your corner to the three receiver side, you've
- 18:48Speaker 1: got d Alford to the three receiver side, You've got
- 18:51Speaker 1: Caleb alarms Or to the three receiver side, and then
- 18:55Speaker 1: you've got to roll Bernard backside kind of one on
- 18:58Speaker 1: one with the back depending on kind of what covers
- 19:01Speaker 1: your playing or what they're doing. I think being a will,
- 19:04Speaker 1: as a lot of other people have said, it just
- 19:06Speaker 1: suits him so much better. Torel Bernard, I mean he's undersized, right,
- 19:10Speaker 1: smaller stature, smaller frame, not a big guy, not a
- 19:13Speaker 1: heavy guy, but a good blitzer. He triggers well, he
- 19:16Speaker 1: reads things well, he can cover running backs coming out
- 19:19Speaker 1: of the backfield. I think playing is that weak side
- 19:22Speaker 1: linebacker suits him much better than being kind of more
- 19:27Speaker 1: in traffic, more in that middle spot of the field,
- 19:30Speaker 1: not even just from a pure size standpoint, It is
- 19:32Speaker 1: just from a skill set standpoint, right, Like we we've
- 19:34Speaker 1: talked about it this offseason, how Jim Leonards defense is
- 19:38Speaker 1: a potential upgrade for Torel Bernard in terms of scheme fit,
- 19:43Speaker 1: because you are going to see more movement, you are
- 19:44Speaker 1: going to see more blitzing, you are going to see
- 19:46Speaker 1: more man coverage. So getting Bernard in a spot where
- 19:53Speaker 1: he can take advantage of that more and doesn't have
- 19:55Speaker 1: to be in the traffic as much, and his his
- 19:57Speaker 1: role isn't I don't want to say simpler, meaning like
- 19:59Speaker 1: it's dumb down, but simpler in terms of responsibility, and
- 20:01Speaker 1: he can just trigger and be shot out of a
- 20:05Speaker 1: cannon and be in kind of more of these isolated
- 20:07Speaker 1: responsibility aspects, not because he can't handle, like he's an
- 20:10Speaker 1: extremely smart player, but I think it fits his skill
- 20:13Speaker 1: set a little bit more so. I thought that was
- 20:14Speaker 1: really notable. We'll see if that continues going forward. I
- 20:17Speaker 1: think it's something to note and watch for come scrimmage time,
- 20:20Speaker 1: preseason time, even more training camp time. Who's lining up
- 20:23Speaker 1: at linebacker together? Has everything we've been seeing purely a
- 20:27Speaker 1: function of you know, Dorririan just has been healthy. When
- 20:31Speaker 1: he is, it's his spot to lose. When Dorrian's one
- 20:33Speaker 1: hundred percent, does he get you know, dropped in above
- 20:38Speaker 1: e or is he behind him? Is he or going
- 20:40Speaker 1: to be the mic? Is Dorny in the mic? Is
- 20:42Speaker 1: Bernard saying it? Will is Bernard going back to mic?
- 20:45Speaker 1: Are we going to see kind of more of a
- 20:47Speaker 1: fluid movement type of thing?
- 20:49Speaker 3: Because yeah, it was.
- 20:50Speaker 1: Bernard was weak side regardless if it was you know,
- 20:53Speaker 1: if we're if we're calling the strong side the passing
- 20:55Speaker 1: strength or we're calling it the run strength side. Either way,
- 20:59Speaker 1: Bernard was playing is more or that week side backer
- 21:01Speaker 1: for the entirety of the day to day. I didn't
- 21:03Speaker 1: really note it in the first segment of team because
- 21:07Speaker 1: I was looking at other things, But all through the
- 21:09Speaker 1: entire second segment of team and the third it was
- 21:12Speaker 1: Bernard at weakside linebacker NonStop, and then again even with
- 21:15Speaker 1: Dorian Williams at the end going from there. So something
- 21:20Speaker 1: to note, you know again, I think to ro Bernard
- 21:23Speaker 1: is going to be a starter in this defense. As
- 21:25Speaker 1: I pulled my phone out to go through more of
- 21:26Speaker 1: my notes, It's just gonna be a matter of where
- 21:30Speaker 1: you know he fits in, how he fits in, so
- 21:32Speaker 1: on and so forth. Also on the defensive side, I
- 21:37Speaker 1: noted this on Day one and Day two and Day three.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Rookie cornerback, undrafted corner out of Arkansas, can I Walker
- 21:45Speaker 1: number forty one? If you are at training camp or
- 21:47Speaker 1: at the scrimmage next week or in the preseason, can
- 21:51Speaker 1: I Walker just keeps making plays like he looks really good.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He's rolling with the twos been pretty much Christian Benford
- 22:01Speaker 1: and Max Hairston as the ones at outside corner, and
- 22:04Speaker 1: then the twos have been davison Ingguanosen and CANi Walker.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Walker's looked great like man coverage, match coverage stuff, his
- 22:13Speaker 1: own coverage, and some spatial awareness. I noted it today
- 22:19Speaker 1: that I'm gonna at some point this weekend, I'm gonna
- 22:21Speaker 1: go back and watch a bunch of his tape. He
- 22:24Speaker 1: was in Arkansas this past year, but he got hurt.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I think like three games in. He was in Oklahoma
- 22:28Speaker 1: before that, I'm and I think part of it too is,
- 22:33Speaker 1: you know, the Bills have this habit of finding you know,
- 22:37Speaker 1: late round players that are able to make an impact.
- 22:41Speaker 1: You know, even a corner Christian Benford famously, you know,
- 22:43Speaker 1: a sixth round pick and came in and did a
- 22:45Speaker 1: great job. Even you know, I know, Levi Wallace isn't sexy,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and Dan Jackson is you know, persona non grata at
- 22:52Speaker 1: this point, but like Levi Wallace being an undrafted corner
- 22:56Speaker 1: and playing as much and doing a serviceable and viable
- 22:58Speaker 1: job for the Bills as long as he did Dan
- 23:00Speaker 1: Jackson even just being a CB three or a CB
- 23:03Speaker 1: four at spots being able to work in a bit,
- 23:07Speaker 1: the Bills have had success with these late round dbs
- 23:11Speaker 1: or even you know DB's that are kind of more
- 23:13Speaker 1: late round quote unquote in free agency. You know Micah
- 23:16Speaker 1: Hyde granted different regime now, but you know Micah Hyde was.
- 23:20Speaker 3: More of a punt returner.
- 23:21Speaker 1: And a nickel guy in Green Bay, and then he
- 23:23Speaker 1: comes to Buffalo, He's an All Pro safety. Jordan Poyer
- 23:26Speaker 1: was a cast off, not really thought of much leaving Cleveland.
- 23:28Speaker 1: He becomes an all Pro safety here. It just seems
- 23:31Speaker 1: like you know, and I know a lot of that
- 23:32Speaker 1: with Sean McDermott doing a great job and getting those
- 23:34Speaker 1: guys up, but it just seems like there's something in
- 23:36Speaker 1: the water with like late round guys and the Brandon
- 23:38Speaker 1: Bean era kind of making an impact even on the
- 23:40Speaker 1: offensive side to a degree as well, like Shakira being
- 23:43Speaker 1: a fifth round pick. And I'm not here saying, you know,
- 23:45Speaker 1: can I Walker is the next Christian Benford, But man,
- 23:48Speaker 1: he looks really good. And what's been nice to see
- 23:50Speaker 1: is even when the like the second group of corners
- 23:54Speaker 1: or defenders have worked in so even when it's Igbinosin
- 23:57Speaker 1: and CANi Walker at corner with the twos, the ones
- 24:00Speaker 1: have still been in there for the bill.
- 24:03Speaker 3: So can I Walker is.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Covering Khalil Shakir and Josh Palmer and Keyan Coleman and
- 24:07Speaker 1: Skyler Bell. It's not like he's covering you know, wide
- 24:11Speaker 1: receiver eight and wide receiver nine. He's covering twos and threes,
- 24:15Speaker 1: but he's also covering some ones. Can I Walker has.
- 24:17Speaker 3: Looked really good.
- 24:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna get into his college tape at some point
- 24:20Speaker 1: this weekend and kind of see what's up. But he is,
- 24:23Speaker 1: he's a name to keep an eye out for.
- 24:25Speaker 2: You.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You know, we know Christian Benford is not gonna get
- 24:26Speaker 1: a lot of snaps this preseason. I'm interested to see
- 24:31Speaker 1: how much Max Harston plays this preseason because again, he
- 24:34Speaker 1: didn't really get a training camp last year, didn't get
- 24:37Speaker 1: a preseason at all. Last year, played a decent chunk
- 24:40Speaker 1: of time in the regular season, then got hurt at
- 24:42Speaker 1: the end. So I wonder how much time Hairston gets.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But you know, Davis Nigbinosen's gonna get a bunch of snaps,
- 24:47Speaker 1: And I think can I Walker's gonna get a bunch
- 24:49Speaker 1: of snaps at corner. So someone to keep an eye
- 24:52Speaker 1: out for number forty one in your programs, maybe number
- 24:56Speaker 1: one in your hearts, But yeah, can I Walker continues
- 25:00Speaker 1: to make plays. Where is this from Charles? Charles said,
- 25:03Speaker 1: are you buying that Kincaid put on more muscle? So
- 25:06Speaker 1: now the Bills are gonna ask him to block more?
- 25:09Speaker 1: I am buying that he put on more muscle. I'm
- 25:11Speaker 1: still waiting to see if the Bills are gonna ask
- 25:14Speaker 1: him to block more. I did note on day one
- 25:18Speaker 1: there was a look towards the end of practice. It
- 25:22Speaker 1: was a eleven personnel nub tight end formation, so into
- 25:27Speaker 1: the boundary, So Dalton Kincaid was the inline tight end.
- 25:30Speaker 1: He was the only tight on the field in line
- 25:31Speaker 1: tight end, lined up right next to Dion Dawkins into
- 25:34Speaker 1: the boundary.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Opposite side of him were the three wide receivers.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And they ran the ball and Dalton Kincaid came off
- 25:43Speaker 1: the line. It was him versus Mike Dana. If I
- 25:46Speaker 1: had to call it, I would say Dana beat him.
- 25:50Speaker 1: But I did think it was interesting that they lined
- 25:52Speaker 1: him up only tight end on the field. They put
- 25:53Speaker 1: him in line nub tight end formation. I love a
- 25:57Speaker 1: good nub tight end. My favorite thing is to run
- 26:00Speaker 1: towards that nub tight end because usually what you'll get
- 26:03Speaker 1: is either a numbers advantage out there, or the defense
- 26:06Speaker 1: will have a corner to that side, and that's an
- 26:10Speaker 1: advantage in theory in the run game. So it's either
- 26:12Speaker 1: a legit math numbers advantage or it's a body types
- 26:15Speaker 1: of personnel advantage. So I love a good nub tight end,
- 26:18Speaker 1: and they had him there. We'll see if it matters
- 26:22Speaker 1: or what we'll see going forward. I do think it's interesting,
- 26:26Speaker 1: you know, kind of in the grand scheme of the
- 26:28Speaker 1: tight ends. I would like Dalton Dalton Kinkaid to be
- 26:32Speaker 1: a viable in line blocker. Does he have to be, No,
- 26:35Speaker 1: he can still be more than viable pass game threat
- 26:39Speaker 1: even if he can't be in line. But if he
- 26:42Speaker 1: can line up in line and he can block, it
- 26:45Speaker 1: just opens up the menu so much more. You're not
- 26:47Speaker 1: siloed as much. You're not put into this box where
- 26:49Speaker 1: the defense knows, Okay, Kinkaid's in there, he's not going
- 26:52Speaker 1: to be in line, Oh he is, Well, they're not
- 26:55Speaker 1: going to run to him. Okay. If they do run
- 26:57Speaker 1: to him, it's advantage us. Right. There's all these kind
- 27:00Speaker 1: of mitigating factors to him as an overall value piece,
- 27:05Speaker 1: And if he is more viable as a run blocker,
- 27:06Speaker 1: there's more alignments that you can put him into. There's
- 27:09Speaker 1: more uncertainty you create for the defense. There's a significant
- 27:12Speaker 1: exponential increase in terms of his value to the offense
- 27:15Speaker 1: and what he does for the offense and the bunds
- 27:16Speaker 1: you can put a defense in. That being said, Knox
- 27:20Speaker 1: is more than capable as an inline blocker. Jackson Hawes
- 27:22Speaker 1: obviously is phenomenal in that regard, So I don't think
- 27:26Speaker 1: it's a necessity for the offense. I do just hope
- 27:29Speaker 1: it's something to help Kincaid elevate. I still do think that,
- 27:34Speaker 1: and as Charles you say, I just want more Kinkaid
- 27:36Speaker 1: on the field.
- 27:37Speaker 3: However, the Bills need to make it happen.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I know the addition of DJ Moore is the big
- 27:42Speaker 1: talk for the pass game and wide receivers, YadA, YadA.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I still think the best weapon in the Bills pass
- 27:48Speaker 1: game is Dalton Kaka. I think he's the best mismatch creator.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I think he's a problem for Nichols. I think he's
- 27:55Speaker 1: a problem for big Nickels in terms of safeties, you know,
- 27:58Speaker 1: trying to cover him. He's a problem for lineback. Was
- 28:00Speaker 1: trying to cover him. He dropped Cold Bishop today. Cold
- 28:02Speaker 1: Bishop had him in one on one out of the slot.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Kinkaid kind of turned him inside out with a stem
- 28:08Speaker 1: and Bishop tripped up, fell down to the ground. Kincaid
- 28:10Speaker 1: was wide open on a corner route, like you have
- 28:13Speaker 1: to be. You have to have some size, athleticism and
- 28:16Speaker 1: technique as a defender to be able to cover Dalton Kincaid.
- 28:20Speaker 1: And he's also good at finding space and zone and
- 28:22Speaker 1: reading coverage, so I think Kinkaid is, like I'm just
- 28:25Speaker 1: saying to say the same thing that Jpacosta said when
- 28:27Speaker 1: he came on the show last year in the offseason.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I think Dalton Kinkaid is the tip of the spear
- 28:32Speaker 1: when it comes to the pass game. So the more
- 28:34Speaker 1: he gets on the field exactly your point, Charles, in
- 28:36Speaker 1: whatever way, shape or form, I think that's good. And
- 28:39Speaker 1: the more the more the more you get him on
- 28:41Speaker 1: the field and the more variety of ways you can
- 28:46Speaker 1: use him gives him more value, obviously, but it gives
- 28:49Speaker 1: the Bills offense more value and puts the defense into
- 28:51Speaker 1: a bind because him being on the field isn't necessarily
- 28:54Speaker 1: a tell and your usage isn't capped or limited when
- 28:57Speaker 1: you have him.
- 28:58Speaker 3: So I'm excited for that.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I guess we're gonna stay with some pass catchers just
- 29:04Speaker 1: for now. I'm just literally apologies. I look down and
- 29:07Speaker 1: just going through notes and everything. DJ Moore's look good.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I set in on social the first couple of days.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I know this is like corny, but even even just
- 29:15Speaker 1: watching him and stretching, he just moves so much differently
- 29:19Speaker 1: than everyone else, Like he has an explosive floatiness to him,
- 29:24Speaker 1: like he glides and floats, but he's also got like
- 29:26Speaker 1: juice and explosion and power in his steps.
- 29:30Speaker 3: Still not the most precise outrunner, but whatever.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Alan's had some good throws to him on some out
- 29:34Speaker 1: routes on a dig over the middle yesterday or I'm
- 29:37Speaker 1: sorry on day two for a touchdown. They've had some
- 29:39Speaker 1: manufactured touches for him, some gadgetry stuff. He also had
- 29:42Speaker 1: some really nice fluorescent green cleats on today that I
- 29:45Speaker 1: really liked.
- 29:46Speaker 3: I hope he continues with that look.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It was a good look. Also makes him feel faster.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I know that's not a real thing, but that's how
- 29:51Speaker 1: he felt.
- 29:52Speaker 3: Skyther Bell had some.
- 29:53Speaker 1: Nice catches today with the first team, a nice layered
- 29:56Speaker 1: ball from Josh Allen between the second and third levels
- 29:59Speaker 1: of the defense on a dig. If I remember correctly,
- 30:03Speaker 1: Josh Palmer looked good today. Got behind Big Banocan on
- 30:11Speaker 1: the boundary. I don't know how he got behind Igbanosan.
- 30:14Speaker 1: I didn't see that part. I was looking at something else.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I don't know if if Iggnosin's eyes were in the
- 30:18Speaker 1: wrong spot, or if he just got beat, or there's
- 30:20Speaker 1: miscommunication in coverage, but Palmer got behind igbanosin Alan put
- 30:24Speaker 1: it out in front of him, and Palmer jumped and
- 30:28Speaker 1: stretched out and made a really nice catch with a
- 30:30Speaker 1: ball landed on like the more of the fingers, like
- 30:33Speaker 1: where the fingers meet the hand more so than the hand.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Came out and made a really nice like not fingertip catch,
- 30:38Speaker 1: but a fingers based catch that was really nice. Palmer
- 30:42Speaker 1: looked good today, really crisp routes, really sharp ro outrunner.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I know what he was last year, and I'm gonna
- 30:48Speaker 1: talk a little bit on both sides of my mouth. Obviously,
- 30:50Speaker 1: the injury is one thing I said it last year, Like,
- 30:54Speaker 1: I didn't think Josh Palmer was the deep threat that
- 30:57Speaker 1: he was being made out to be.
- 30:58Speaker 3: Everybody was throwing out these metrics.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Oh, he's top ten in this, and he's top this
- 31:01Speaker 1: and that, YadA, YadA, YadA. I didn't think he was
- 31:04Speaker 1: the deep threat that people were making him out to be.
- 31:07Speaker 1: I also didn't think he was suited to be like
- 31:09Speaker 1: a top of the depth chart wide receiver. And what
- 31:12Speaker 1: I'm about to say is still probably gonna anger people
- 31:14Speaker 1: because he you know, he got paid a decent chunk
- 31:16Speaker 1: of change. Uh, in a lot of people's eyes but
- 31:19Speaker 1: Josh Palmer is like the wide receiver three or maybe
- 31:22Speaker 1: wide receiver four in this offense is going to be
- 31:25Speaker 1: really nice. Like he's a really useful piece. I still
- 31:28Speaker 1: think he's probably the Bill's best wide receiver in terms
- 31:30Speaker 1: of beating man coverage from like a route running standpoint,
- 31:33Speaker 1: because he's a good route runner, really crisp, sharp, decisive routes.
- 31:36Speaker 1: He knows how to snap stuff off, he's good with
- 31:38Speaker 1: his stems, and the addition of DJ Moore opens things.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Up for Palmer.
- 31:43Speaker 1: And if you've got DJ Moore, I'm not going to
- 31:48Speaker 1: the traditional sense, but in terms of your targets or
- 31:50Speaker 1: like the guys who you're are the top of the
- 31:51Speaker 1: pecking order for your wide receivers. If your wide receivers
- 31:53Speaker 1: are DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir, Josh Palmer, and then Kincaid
- 31:58Speaker 1: stays healthy, that's that's that's a cool top four. You're fine,
- 32:02Speaker 1: especially with a run game like the Buffalo Bills have, right,
- 32:04Speaker 1: the run game is really the thing that's gonna stir
- 32:06Speaker 1: the drink. You've got Josh Allen, I think that's a
- 32:11Speaker 1: fine grouping. Uh And I just think Josh Palmer's looked
- 32:14Speaker 1: really good. He looked really good in drills. He looked
- 32:15Speaker 1: really good in team. He's a really good route runner,
- 32:18Speaker 1: especially in the underneath in the intermediate, which I think
- 32:20Speaker 1: is better for him to succeed. Now you can send
- 32:23Speaker 1: DJ more deep and if DJ Moore, DJ Moore might
- 32:26Speaker 1: run right past this guy and you can chuck it
- 32:28Speaker 1: up to DJ Moore more or he's gonna carry some
- 32:31Speaker 1: bodies with him and open up the intermediate for Dalton
- 32:33Speaker 1: Kinkaid or Josh Palmer, Khalus Shakir or Kean Coleman, whatever
- 32:38Speaker 1: I think. Uh. I also think what's interesting too, Charles
- 32:42Speaker 1: says Palmer. I think lines up as wide receiver two
- 32:44Speaker 1: when in twelve, but probably fourth and targets behind DJ,
- 32:47Speaker 1: Shakiri and Kinkai. I think that's fair. I also think
- 32:49Speaker 1: what's interesting to note, and I like this comment. I
- 32:51Speaker 1: think a big thing that's interesting to note, right is
- 32:55Speaker 1: who's the wide receiver that they feel most confident in
- 33:02Speaker 1: with being a blocker and doing the mccollins and Tyrell
- 33:05Speaker 1: Shavers stuff. Where you've got those condensed formations and you're
- 33:09Speaker 1: in you know, twelve personnel or eleven personnel, and we
- 33:13Speaker 1: would see multiple receivers like near the tight ends and
- 33:15Speaker 1: they're running duo and those receivers are inserting and whatever
- 33:18Speaker 1: personnel grouping they are. You know that Mac Collins was
- 33:22Speaker 1: a weapon as a blocker as a wide receiver. Tyrol
- 33:24Speaker 1: Shavers was a weapon as a blocker as a wide receiver.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Who fills that role?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Is it? Josh Palmer is a key On Coleman is
- 33:32Speaker 1: a Khalil Shakir. He's gotten better as a blocker. I
- 33:34Speaker 1: would love for it to be Khalil Shakir because then
- 33:36Speaker 1: you can start to tie in some fun insert play
- 33:39Speaker 1: action stuff like the Rams do with Pukinakua.
- 33:43Speaker 3: I would love for it to be Shakir.
- 33:45Speaker 1: But even if it's not, like, I wonder what that
- 33:47Speaker 1: looks like because part of being a wide receiver for
- 33:50Speaker 1: the Bills the past several years, with how good their
- 33:52Speaker 1: run game is and the way they run the ball,
- 33:54Speaker 1: part of being a top of the depth chart wide
- 33:55Speaker 1: receiver for the Bills is being able to run block.
- 33:58Speaker 1: So I wonder who that receiver is that they lean on,
- 34:02Speaker 1: right like. Part of what helped Shaver's carve out a
- 34:04Speaker 1: role was his ability as a blocker, and that mattered
- 34:06Speaker 1: to lockdown the stretch now that it's not him because
- 34:09Speaker 1: he's hurt, and it's not Mac Collins because he's still elsewhere.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Who is that? And I think that's an interesting wrench
- 34:14Speaker 1: to kind of throw into the snap share or usage
- 34:17Speaker 1: conversation when it comes to wide receiver. But yeah, Iowa,
- 34:23Speaker 1: I think, yeah, Nigel sa is gonna be Dj Moore.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna ask DJ Moore to be
- 34:27Speaker 1: the guy inserting on duo and like fitting up a
- 34:30Speaker 1: safety or the nickel. I guess they could line him
- 34:33Speaker 1: there in some looks and maybe throw them across the
- 34:35Speaker 1: formation and do different stuff, or ask him to block
- 34:37Speaker 1: time and time again.
- 34:38Speaker 3: But I don't think they're gonna use him.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna use DJ Moore as the
- 34:41Speaker 1: dirty work mashing wide receiver like Tyrol Shavers was and
- 34:47Speaker 1: Matt Collins was. Trousa's exactly ant. That's why I view
- 34:51Speaker 1: Palmero over Shakir. But could be key on too. I
- 34:53Speaker 1: get it, I geah, I get it.
- 34:54Speaker 3: I get exactly what you're saying. Yeah, it'll be, it'll
- 34:57Speaker 3: be interesting.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I'm interested to see. I know knowas hiss, DJ Moore
- 35:01Speaker 1: will have a bigger impact for us than Diggs. Stefan
- 35:04Speaker 1: Diggs was like a top five, top three wide receiver
- 35:07Speaker 1: in the league when he was here with the Bills
- 35:09Speaker 1: those first several years. I would love if DJ Moore
- 35:11Speaker 1: had that impact. I don't think he has the skill
- 35:14Speaker 1: set for that type of impact. I do think he'll
- 35:16Speaker 1: have some good production. But Stefan Diggs was like arguably
- 35:19Speaker 1: the best route runner in football at that time.
- 35:22Speaker 3: So that that's a that's a that's a high high
- 35:25Speaker 3: high bar.
- 35:25Speaker 1: To set high high bar. Two set. Nicholas says, Palmer
- 35:32Speaker 1: in a reduced role parentheses, if he's healthy, should be
- 35:34Speaker 1: a good contributor. Definitely not out on him. I I
- 35:38Speaker 1: agree by something else on Chad. Chad said, how about
- 35:41Speaker 1: Bell meaning Skyl Belle some good catches today, rolled with
- 35:46Speaker 1: the ones a little bit. I've noticed him more an
- 35:49Speaker 1: individual than I have in team. I'm kind of waiting
- 35:52Speaker 1: for the preseason to kind of see what comes in
- 35:55Speaker 1: from there.
- 35:57Speaker 3: I thought key On Coleman has also looked good as well.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I know on day one someone put I forget who
- 36:04Speaker 1: a video out of like he dropped the first pass
- 36:07Speaker 1: and seven on seven, but then they went back to
- 36:10Speaker 1: him on the next play was a back shoulder throw
- 36:11Speaker 1: against Max Harriston, and he made a really nice catch
- 36:13Speaker 1: on the sideline on a ball from Josh Allen. He
- 36:15Speaker 1: held the red line, adjusted his body, made a catch.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I think ke On has largely looked good. He and
- 36:20Speaker 1: Skyler Bell both stayed after practice today with wide receivers
- 36:24Speaker 1: coach Drew Terrell and Josh Allen. They were going over
- 36:29Speaker 1: you know, hand usage and footwork and body positioning in
- 36:32Speaker 1: their route stems and then some of their release package techniques,
- 36:36Speaker 1: and then Allen was throwing them you know, routes left
- 36:39Speaker 1: and right and getting reps in. So it was interesting
- 36:41Speaker 1: that Coleman stayed after Bell stayed after Well, I think
- 36:44Speaker 1: the receivers will look good again.
- 36:46Speaker 3: It's there's no pads right now.
- 36:47Speaker 1: So a lot of my conversation here is somewhat tempered
- 36:51Speaker 1: because pads haven't been on, especially for the trenches. Like
- 36:54Speaker 1: I'm not really looking at offensive line and defensive line
- 36:57Speaker 1: right now because there's no pads on. I'm not gonna
- 36:59Speaker 1: be like, oh man, this guy was getting blocked, this
- 37:01Speaker 1: guy was getting in like this all this this run
- 37:03Speaker 1: play look great. Bullets aren't live and there's no pads like,
- 37:07Speaker 1: so the trenches are definitely kind of tempered for me
- 37:11Speaker 1: in terms of what the glean from that, and even
- 37:14Speaker 1: some larger stuff overall for everyone. But I thought Kean
- 37:17Speaker 1: Coleman has looked good. Yes, I know he had that
- 37:19Speaker 1: drop to start seven on seven on day one, but
- 37:23Speaker 1: Coleman's looked good. He's found some space, found some openings,
- 37:28Speaker 1: looks athletic. He's had good hands. He's had a couple drops.
- 37:30Speaker 1: But I would say more more catches than drops, for sure,
- 37:39Speaker 1: and more better catches than drops as well. Bill's fan
- 37:44Speaker 1: seventy eight eighty three says more secure in a healthy
- 37:46Speaker 1: Palmer is a top half of the league wide receiver room.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Fans aren't giving it enough credit. I don't think it's
- 37:50Speaker 1: top half. I think you can. I think it's like
- 37:52Speaker 1: sixteen to twenty. It's definitely better and it's fine. I
- 37:57Speaker 1: don't think they're a top half of the of because
- 37:59Speaker 1: for me, DJ Moore is not a true one. He's
- 38:01Speaker 1: more of a high end two. Palmer is more of
- 38:04Speaker 1: a three Shakirs, more of a two three. I don't
- 38:06Speaker 1: think they have a true one. I forgot, oh, I
- 38:09Speaker 1: get it in my notes somewhere because Kendall and I
- 38:11Speaker 1: like kind of ranked Bills or uh yeah, where the
- 38:13Speaker 1: wide receiver room falls in with receiving groups across the league. Yeah,
- 38:18Speaker 1: that's fair.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I know I wouldn't say top half. I would
- 38:22Speaker 3: I would.
- 38:22Speaker 1: I would put them as high as maybe like seventeenth
- 38:24Speaker 1: or eighteenth. I think they're somewhere like sixteen to twenty.
- 38:30Speaker 1: All right, Uh okay, I've noticed.
- 38:38Speaker 3: A lot more in breaking routes from the wide receivers
- 38:39Speaker 3: this year.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I'm interested how much that like continues, like a lot
- 38:43Speaker 1: of digs, not Stefan diggs, digs in terms of the
- 38:48Speaker 1: route like in breaker routes also sometimes referred to as
- 38:50Speaker 1: a basic but you know, deep digs, you know, fifteen
- 38:54Speaker 1: to twenty or ones around like ten to fifteen have
- 38:57Speaker 1: continued to happen, and that especially to DJ Moore. But
- 39:03Speaker 1: I feel like we haven't seen a lot of those
- 39:05Speaker 1: routes previously in the Bills offense. So I am definitely
- 39:10Speaker 1: uh noting that. Also defensively, a bunch of man coverage,
- 39:16Speaker 1: single high coverage, what match coverage is coming from the defense.
- 39:23Speaker 1: I also think something has been interesting to note. You know,
- 39:25Speaker 1: defense is usually ahead of offenses at this time in
- 39:29Speaker 1: the in training camp. But I thought the defense has
- 39:32Speaker 1: looked really good from a coverage standpoint, you know, packing
- 39:35Speaker 1: guys into you know, in between the numbers, putting guys
- 39:39Speaker 1: into passing windows, squeezing passing windows, choking off routes, you know,
- 39:44Speaker 1: staying attached to wide receivers and tight ends hips, being
- 39:48Speaker 1: in good position and even if they get beat, it's
- 39:49Speaker 1: more due to a good catcher, great ball placement than
- 39:51Speaker 1: it is somebody running Scott Free wide open. It's been
- 39:56Speaker 1: cool watching Jim Leonard be really hands on with the
- 40:01Speaker 1: DB's in terms of the safeties and the corners, which
- 40:05Speaker 1: I think is expected, right, Like Jim Leonard was a dB,
- 40:07Speaker 1: that's you know, kind of his position of focus for
- 40:09Speaker 1: the defense, even though he's great from a front structure perspective,
- 40:14Speaker 1: and how he's going to attack uh with the with
- 40:16Speaker 1: the with the first and second levels of the defense,
- 40:18Speaker 1: especially coming from that Rex Ryan school of thought initially,
- 40:22Speaker 1: but yeah, working with CJ. Garner, Johnson, Cole, Bishop d Alford,
- 40:26Speaker 1: Christian Benford like very hands on, and then Java Li,
- 40:29Speaker 1: the Bill's corners coach, has been hands on with Leonard
- 40:32Speaker 1: like those who have been attached to the hip a bunch.
- 40:34Speaker 1: There's been a lot of like defensive back conversation amongst
- 40:37Speaker 1: each other in terms of the players amongst each other
- 40:40Speaker 1: with Jim Leonard, with Java Li, and it's always it's
- 40:43Speaker 1: cool to watch Leonard and the players, the lie and
- 40:45Speaker 1: the players and then Leonard and the Lye all act
- 40:49Speaker 1: out all the time like what they're doing, like you know,
- 40:51Speaker 1: someone says something is like there. There was one where
- 40:54Speaker 1: Alford and CJ. Garner Johnson were telling something to Jim
- 40:58Speaker 1: Leonard and they were going over, uh, like technique. It was,
- 41:01Speaker 1: you know, body positioning and then talking about you know,
- 41:04Speaker 1: based on the hand gestures and what they were doing
- 41:05Speaker 1: like okay, if this guy's lined up here and he's
- 41:07Speaker 1: running this route, you know I'm playing my technique like this.
- 41:10Speaker 1: You know, my hand is going here, my feet are
- 41:12Speaker 1: going here, my eyes are going here. And then Leonard
- 41:14Speaker 1: you know, had something you feedback for that, and then
- 41:17Speaker 1: Alford was saying something kind of like yeah, but what
- 41:19Speaker 1: about X, Y and Z. They finished that conversation. Leonard
- 41:23Speaker 1: then went to Java Li and acted out for Java
- 41:27Speaker 1: LII what d Alford acted out for him, and then
- 41:31Speaker 1: Leonard gave his feedback almost kind of bell. The from
- 41:33Speaker 1: the vibe I got and the understanding I got was
- 41:35Speaker 1: more so like Jim Leonard having this coaching moment with
- 41:38Speaker 1: d Alford and d all For being like.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but what about this, or like we're being taught this?
- 41:42Speaker 1: And so Jim Leonard went to Java Li and was like, hey,
- 41:44Speaker 1: I was just talking to d He presented me this situation.
- 41:48Speaker 3: My thought is we should do X, Y and Z.
- 41:50Speaker 1: He was wondering, you know, thinking like you you were
- 41:53Speaker 1: you're teaching A B and C or do you want
- 41:55Speaker 1: to do A B and C? Do you think that's
- 41:56Speaker 1: better than X, Y and Z. I'm not saying this
- 41:58Speaker 1: in any negative way, Like this is just what that
- 42:00Speaker 1: conversation looked like. It was just a real football technique,
- 42:03Speaker 1: responsibility alignment conversation. There's so much of that, so much
- 42:06Speaker 1: back and forth between Leonard and Val Leonard and the players,
- 42:11Speaker 1: the lie and the players. It's been really cool to
- 42:13Speaker 1: see a lot of open and honest dialogue it appears,
- 42:16Speaker 1: and a lot of technique and focusing just good football
- 42:18Speaker 1: conversation in between plays, in between drills and between in
- 42:22Speaker 1: between segments all that kind of stuff. And I think,
- 42:26Speaker 1: how Leonard, you know, has the defense operating, and what
- 42:32Speaker 1: Vali is doing with the corners and just what the
- 42:35Speaker 1: two of them believe in. There's just a lot of
- 42:37Speaker 1: restricted airspace. Even if it's not man coverage, there's just
- 42:41Speaker 1: guys are in the right position. Again, they're squeezing windows,
- 42:43Speaker 1: They're choking off routes. Man coverage has been good, reading
- 42:46Speaker 1: route distributions has been good. There's not guys flying wide open.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Guys are understanding their checks kind of where to get
- 42:53Speaker 1: to and how to get there, how to be in
- 42:55Speaker 1: the way, and just make life harder for the offense.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Now will see as we go forward and the offense
- 43:01Speaker 1: starts to open up a little bit, it's more on
- 43:03Speaker 1: the same page, starts to work in different concepts. Again,
- 43:06Speaker 1: this isn't you know, the offense isn't trying to beat
- 43:08Speaker 1: the defense. Guys are installing stuff and trying to figure
- 43:12Speaker 1: out their baseline on both sides of the ball and
- 43:14Speaker 1: position groups and concepts and everything offensively and defensively. But
- 43:18Speaker 1: the defenses look good also at this point again we're
- 43:22Speaker 1: in the install phase. We're kind of just working through things.
- 43:26Speaker 1: A lot of four down stuff for the Bills, a
- 43:28Speaker 1: lot of nickel defense. You know, we talked about in
- 43:30Speaker 1: the offseason Jim Leonards defense, that tight front base is
- 43:34Speaker 1: it is an odd front structure, right, so you're gonna
- 43:36Speaker 1: get you know, Bradley Chubb and Greg Russeau on your edges,
- 43:42Speaker 1: t J. Sanders, and that Oliver is your defensive ends
- 43:44Speaker 1: or your two four eyes on the inside shoulder of
- 43:46Speaker 1: the tackles, and then Dion Walker is your nose tackle
- 43:49Speaker 1: over the center. You might get some different looks between
- 43:52Speaker 1: the three interior players. You know, between Oliver Walker and Sanders,
- 43:56Speaker 1: you might get more like a stronger weak eagle, so
- 43:59Speaker 1: or where you're having a full or I, you know,
- 44:01Speaker 1: a one tech on the on the shoulder or a
- 44:05Speaker 1: shade of the center instead of you know, a head
- 44:07Speaker 1: of zero tech nose and then you know a three
- 44:09Speaker 1: I for that other defensive end instead of being instead
- 44:12Speaker 1: of being four eyes zero four I, you'll get four
- 44:15Speaker 1: I one three. You know, you'll get some shade action
- 44:19Speaker 1: from the nose and one of the other defensive ends.
- 44:21Speaker 1: So things can look a little different on the interior.
- 44:23Speaker 1: But we talked about, you know, the odd front presentation
- 44:27Speaker 1: and that being the base defense for the Bills. But
- 44:29Speaker 1: that even with that, at most you were going to
- 44:33Speaker 1: see that maybe thirty thirty five percent. So the majority
- 44:36Speaker 1: of snaps for this Bill's defense were and are going
- 44:40Speaker 1: to be in nickel dime. And with that, you're going
- 44:44Speaker 1: to get more four down front So you're going to
- 44:45Speaker 1: see more kind of Sean McDermott looking things from a
- 44:49Speaker 1: from a structure perspective than you did previously. Now they're
- 44:53Speaker 1: going to operate differently within that even if they are
- 44:56Speaker 1: in a four down because McDermott is not the same
- 44:59Speaker 1: f asophically or from an identity standpoint that Jim Leonard is,
- 45:02Speaker 1: which again is.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Why I'm so excited about Jim Leonard.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Not to throw shada Sean McDermott, but we're gonna see
- 45:10Speaker 1: a healthy amount of nickel this year. I think we're
- 45:11Speaker 1: gonna see some dime, but we're still gonna see a
- 45:13Speaker 1: bunch of four down fronts. And that was I think regardless,
- 45:16Speaker 1: but even more so because I don't think the Bills
- 45:18Speaker 1: necessarily have the personnel to run a ton of base, right.
- 45:22Speaker 1: You don't have these kick ass four eyes. You don't
- 45:25Speaker 1: have Sebastian Joseph Day, you don't have John Franklin Myers,
- 45:28Speaker 1: you don't have you know, these guys that are built
- 45:32Speaker 1: to live in that world and then also like kick
- 45:34Speaker 1: down to a three tech or one tech and your
- 45:36Speaker 1: even front stuff like they don't have that. We still
- 45:38Speaker 1: don't even know if they necessarily have a nose, right,
- 45:41Speaker 1: we have to see how Dane Walker.
- 45:42Speaker 3: Holds up at that spot.
- 45:43Speaker 1: I do think it was notable in Jim Leonard's presser
- 45:46Speaker 1: a couple of days ago on day two, when he
- 45:49Speaker 1: was asked something about like, oh, you know, when the
- 45:52Speaker 1: pads come on, YadA YadA, and Leonard said, you know,
- 45:57Speaker 1: obviously the true evaluation for the trenches and for everybody
- 45:59Speaker 1: comes and the pads come on. And then one of
- 46:01Speaker 1: the first questions he presented was, you know, like Dion,
- 46:05Speaker 1: you know him playing nose, how many snaps do we
- 46:07Speaker 1: want to see him at nose, you know, versus something
- 46:09Speaker 1: like a four eye. I just thought it was interesting
- 46:11Speaker 1: that his brain immediately went right there. Granted, he was
- 46:13Speaker 1: asked about the noses, but it was funny that that's
- 46:15Speaker 1: exactly where he went. You know. I've continued to say it,
- 46:19Speaker 1: even if Dion Walker is a fit at nose and
- 46:21Speaker 1: they're gonna do a ton of movement stuff with him,
- 46:23Speaker 1: you can't do movement stuff all the time. At a
- 46:26Speaker 1: certain point, he's going to have to be able to
- 46:27Speaker 1: hold the point of attack anchor and play gap in
- 46:31Speaker 1: a half or two gap at some point and be
- 46:33Speaker 1: able to play react attack instead of attack react attack
- 46:37Speaker 1: react is more just one gapping movement based stuff. He's
- 46:40Speaker 1: going to need to do both. That's just the nature
- 46:43Speaker 1: of football, and it's the nature of this defense. That's
- 46:46Speaker 1: why again I wanted to pair him with Kiris Tonga,
- 46:48Speaker 1: Roy Lopez. I'd love to trade for Vita Vea right now.
- 46:51Speaker 1: I would trade for Vita Vea right now and put
- 46:55Speaker 1: Dean Walker at one of the four eyes, and I
- 46:57Speaker 1: think that would be splendid. But we'll see. Yeah, I
- 47:02Speaker 1: don't know if they can fit the Vita BA. I
- 47:04Speaker 1: mean they can pull some levers with some extensions and
- 47:06Speaker 1: some cuts you know, in future things to fit Vita
- 47:08Speaker 1: Ba in. But you know that's also the cost. When
- 47:12Speaker 1: you know you eat all that money for DJ Moore,
- 47:14Speaker 1: not saying that you know is exactly what happened, if
- 47:17Speaker 1: not for DJ Moore, but you have all the DJ
- 47:19Speaker 1: more money on the books. It precludes you from being
- 47:21Speaker 1: able to make a move like this. For Vita Bay
- 47:23Speaker 1: or if somebody does come available. I think that's where
- 47:25Speaker 1: those conversations come in of like, oh, you know, who
- 47:28Speaker 1: cares what they pay for this player? Like the players great,
- 47:31Speaker 1: there's nothing to worry about, like who cares? And it's like, well,
- 47:33Speaker 1: you know, there is an opportunity. Cost resources are finite.
- 47:37Speaker 1: So if you spend if you only have five dollars
- 47:39Speaker 1: and you spend all five dollars on bananas, you can't
- 47:42Speaker 1: get any apples or oranges. It's just it doesn't mean
- 47:45Speaker 1: bananas are bad, doesn't mean the apples or oranges are good.
- 47:47Speaker 1: But if you also want apples and oranges or you
- 47:49Speaker 1: need one of those things, and you spend all your
- 47:50Speaker 1: money on bananas, you don't get anything else. Your resources
- 47:53Speaker 1: are finding And that's just not for DJ Moore, that's
- 47:55Speaker 1: for anything in general. But yeah, I'm in just did
- 48:01Speaker 1: to see.
- 48:02Speaker 3: What happens when the pads come on.
- 48:03Speaker 1: And I do think that was notable that Leonards had
- 48:06Speaker 1: immediately went to that that knows conversation and that specific
- 48:13Speaker 1: element when it comes to Dion Walker going through more notes,
- 48:23Speaker 1: more notes, I don't know where my where's my day two?
- 48:34Speaker 1: Trying to find my there's my Day two. Okay, yep,
- 48:36Speaker 1: more match principles up ticking in breakers. Oh, there's more
- 48:39Speaker 1: and more deep ball shots from the Bills offense. Pushing
- 48:43Speaker 1: the ball a little downfield. Haven't executed on a ton
- 48:45Speaker 1: of them. Overthrows, under throws. I've talked about it multiple
- 48:51Speaker 1: times throughout this offseason. The deep ball is going to
- 48:56Speaker 1: matter again, not just for the Bills. It's more of
- 48:57Speaker 1: like a league trend thing, right, Like, you defe just
- 49:00Speaker 1: don't want you to push the ball downfield. They don't
- 49:03Speaker 1: want it you to hit explosives through the air. Granted,
- 49:05Speaker 1: those throws are lower percentage, so it's harder to hit
- 49:08Speaker 1: them regularly. But if you can hit those, they make
- 49:14Speaker 1: a huge difference. If you're taking you know, seven or
- 49:17Speaker 1: eight deep shots a game and you can hit three
- 49:21Speaker 1: or four, that's huge. And I don't think that's just
- 49:25Speaker 1: for the Bills, think that's league wide. You know, for example,
- 49:27Speaker 1: you look at the Seahawks. Seahawks defense phenomenal, outrageous in
- 49:32Speaker 1: a ton of ways, and you look at a game like,
- 49:34Speaker 1: you know, who gave the Seahawks trouble? A little bit
- 49:36Speaker 1: like going, look what the Buccaneers did against them?
- 49:38Speaker 3: I was watching.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Quarterbacks Documentary or whatever it's called on Netflix, and Baker
- 49:45Speaker 1: Mayfield is just chucking it to a Mecca Buka all
- 49:48Speaker 1: the you know, in the seam downfield, they're hitting chunk
- 49:51Speaker 1: plays like they were like, Oh, you don't want us
- 49:53Speaker 1: to hit explosives downfield. Guess what We're gonna hit explosives downfield?
- 49:58Speaker 1: You know those defenses. That's how are gonna have to
- 49:59Speaker 1: beat the top tier guys Like they are scheming you.
- 50:02Speaker 1: They're scheming you to stay underneath so they can rally
- 50:05Speaker 1: and tackle and choke you and kill you. So you
- 50:08Speaker 1: got to be able to cut them off. You gotta
- 50:10Speaker 1: be able to like cut their throat you get. You
- 50:11Speaker 1: can't just you know, give the paper cuts and nickel
- 50:13Speaker 1: and dime. At some point, you need a good You
- 50:16Speaker 1: need a good chunk of flesh that gets taken out.
- 50:18Speaker 1: You need a good shot or slash. You need to
- 50:21Speaker 1: do more than draw a little blood, like you gotta
- 50:23Speaker 1: you gotta take a piece off them with you. And
- 50:25Speaker 1: so I like the Bills taking some more shots. I
- 50:28Speaker 1: like pushing the ball downfield a little bit. I think
- 50:30Speaker 1: it's a great way. It's an it's an easy natural thing.
- 50:32Speaker 1: To pair with play action, and we've seen a bunch
- 50:34Speaker 1: of play action from the Bills to start camp this year.
- 50:37Speaker 1: That's been kind of like the old football adage, you know,
- 50:40Speaker 1: play action and then send somebody on a deep post
- 50:43Speaker 1: or a Yankee concept where you've got you know, that
- 50:44Speaker 1: deep post and the crosser underneath. Dak Prescott is awesome
- 50:48Speaker 1: at hitting that underneath crosser. Especially that Yankee concept is
- 50:52Speaker 1: great against single high coverage, which the Bills can get
- 50:55Speaker 1: presented to them a ton because of their ability to
- 50:58Speaker 1: run the ball. So I'm thinking there's gonna be more
- 51:01Speaker 1: deep shots worked into the offense, especially off of play action.
- 51:08Speaker 1: But we've seen more deep shots, especially on the second
- 51:10Speaker 1: a second day camp, we saw more throws deep, which
- 51:14Speaker 1: I was encouraged about. Let's go to day three notes here.
- 51:22Speaker 1: I think I've spoken on pretty much everyth I'm gonna
- 51:23Speaker 1: start to go through the comments and pull up everybody's thoughts, questions, comments,
- 51:28Speaker 1: concerns as we go through. So if you do have anything,
- 51:30Speaker 1: start putting it up into the check So I'm gonna
- 51:32Speaker 1: start going through and rolling through. Oh I've got Today,
- 51:35Speaker 1: the running backs were drilling option routes out of the backfield,
- 51:38Speaker 1: which maybe immediate. I mean, granted, they could have done
- 51:41Speaker 1: it anyway, but I immediately thought Pete Carmichael, New Orleans Saints,
- 51:44Speaker 1: stuff that I had hoped for, like Pierre Thomas, darren
- 51:47Speaker 1: S Folls, mark Ingram Alvin Kamara. So they were just
- 51:51Speaker 1: drilling option routes, running back, coming out of the backfield,
- 51:53Speaker 1: reading the leverage of the defender, and you know, if
- 51:56Speaker 1: it's inside based taking that route to the flat, or
- 52:00Speaker 1: if it's outside base, cutting back across their face and
- 52:03Speaker 1: running like a Texas route or an angle route like we'd
- 52:05Speaker 1: see Alvin Kamara do a gajillion times a year, which
- 52:09Speaker 1: is part of the reason why we so viable and
- 52:10Speaker 1: fantasy every single year after year after year. Tight Ends
- 52:13Speaker 1: were working in some not some option baseduff, but some
- 52:16Speaker 1: coverage reading stuff. Tight Ends coach Rob Boris and another
- 52:21Speaker 1: assistant were simulating being like an outside corner and you know,
- 52:26Speaker 1: an apex player, and then they vary and switch, you know,
- 52:29Speaker 1: like the corners dropping deep the corner. You know, the
- 52:32Speaker 1: corner's bailing and that apex player is getting to the flat.
- 52:36Speaker 1: You know, simulating like a Cover four or Cover three. Look,
- 52:39Speaker 1: the corner would sit in cloud and that apex player
- 52:42Speaker 1: would drop deep into hooks, so simulating like a cover
- 52:44Speaker 1: two type of look. And then the tight ends are
- 52:46Speaker 1: reading that coverage, sitting hooking in the space, you know,
- 52:50Speaker 1: moving to the flat, cutting back across the face to
- 52:53Speaker 1: kind of However, whatever route they were running in the
- 52:54Speaker 1: concept they were tying it to, and then the quarterbacks
- 52:56Speaker 1: and the tight ends are trying to see that at
- 52:58Speaker 1: the same time. That was notable as well. But I
- 53:03Speaker 1: mentioned the dime. Oh the interior. If I figure on
- 53:07Speaker 1: the the gap in half and two gaping aspect that
- 53:10Speaker 1: I talked about a minutego, the interior defensive line was
- 53:12Speaker 1: drilling and working that in individual today. So more react
- 53:16Speaker 1: attack work where they're engaging straight up two gapping. Engage
- 53:20Speaker 1: your guy, peek read the running backs track, shed this way,
- 53:23Speaker 1: shed that way. Uh, you know, getting screws on screws,
- 53:27Speaker 1: getting your body in the primary gap for gap and
- 53:29Speaker 1: a half and then staying in there or shedding and
- 53:31Speaker 1: get back to your you're falling back into your secondary gap.
- 53:36Speaker 1: So we were getting multi gap principles. You know. Again,
- 53:39Speaker 1: I always try to cause there's two gapping in this
- 53:41Speaker 1: gap in half, I just bucketed all this one thing
- 53:43Speaker 1: under the react attack bucket because it's easier to say, yeah,
- 53:51Speaker 1: all right, I'm gonna work backwards here from comments, Charles
- 53:54Speaker 1: says you notice any more or less motion from the offense? Uh?
- 53:58Speaker 1: And then Andrew also says how much pre snap action
- 54:01Speaker 1: from the offense. I'm gonna treat those as one question.
- 54:03Speaker 1: I would say the same that we've seen before, right,
- 54:07Speaker 1: I would I would say both the Charles's question and
- 54:10Speaker 1: Andrew to yours. You're getting motion. You're getting you know,
- 54:15Speaker 1: in two kinds, right, because I consider them two different things.
- 54:17Speaker 1: You're getting motion, which is like someone coming in motion
- 54:20Speaker 1: and staying that way and the snap happens. Or a
- 54:23Speaker 1: motion with a reset where someone motions across right and
- 54:28Speaker 1: then settles in. You know, someone is the outside receiver
- 54:30Speaker 1: into the boundary. Alan gives the signal that person motions
- 54:34Speaker 1: across and becomes the number two receiver and the slot
- 54:36Speaker 1: on the other side gets set. We run a play,
- 54:39Speaker 1: or a tight end is lined up in the slot
- 54:41Speaker 1: to the left, Alan gives him the queue. He steps off,
- 54:44Speaker 1: moves like, becomes in line on the right side. Right,
- 54:47Speaker 1: those I can if someone's motioning and then just changing
- 54:50Speaker 1: their alignment and getting set.
- 54:52Speaker 3: That's more of a reset to me.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Both. So we're seeing motion and we're seeing resets tight
- 54:56Speaker 1: ends receivers. We're also seeing motion right before the snap,
- 55:01Speaker 1: so essentially like a late motion or a motion that
- 55:04Speaker 1: leads right into the snap. So someone gets motion, and
- 55:06Speaker 1: it's not just motion, let's go all the way across
- 55:08Speaker 1: the formation, it's you know, someone kind of more of
- 55:10Speaker 1: a spread look, and let's motion that number one wide
- 55:13Speaker 1: receiver in and right when they're behind or inside that
- 55:16Speaker 1: number two wide receiver, we're snapping it using motion to
- 55:20Speaker 1: kind of create more leverage advantage or spatial advantages for receivers.
- 55:24Speaker 1: And then what's cool, the bills are also kind of
- 55:26Speaker 1: tying that into you know, selling routes and deceptions. So
- 55:30Speaker 1: on one, DJ Moore is the outside receiver. He motions
- 55:36Speaker 1: in comes just inside the number two receiver, Alan snaps
- 55:40Speaker 1: it and he keeps motioning so kind of like it
- 55:42Speaker 1: gives him like a little slingshot effect going into the snap.
- 55:44Speaker 1: Snap happens. DJ Moore takes off like he's gonna run
- 55:48Speaker 1: in over and then he stops and he pops it
- 55:50Speaker 1: back out. He snaps it back outside, turns genostone inside
- 55:53Speaker 1: out and is wide open. So yeah, I would still
- 55:55Speaker 1: say motion is a heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy heavy thing,
- 55:58Speaker 1: uh in the offense. I think motion is a non
- 56:00Speaker 1: negotiable at this point for most offenses in the NFL,
- 56:03Speaker 1: especially the top ones. But Andrew to your point in
- 56:05Speaker 1: Charles's point, yeah, I think the same amount of motion,
- 56:09Speaker 1: but I think it's a mix of motion and resets.
- 56:12Speaker 1: And then I think when they're doing it kind of
- 56:14Speaker 1: right before the snap or right on the snap to
- 56:17Speaker 1: give the defense as little time as possible to adjust,
- 56:20Speaker 1: which is something I think all offenses should also be doing.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Like it's nice to do motion, it's nice to do resets,
- 56:25Speaker 1: but do them and then snap the ball, give the
- 56:27Speaker 1: defense as little of a chance to see what picture
- 56:31Speaker 1: has changed, and then do something different or adjust and
- 56:34Speaker 1: operate accordingly.
- 56:35Speaker 3: So I like that they're you know, even.
- 56:37Speaker 1: If there's like fifteen seconds left on the play clock, right,
- 56:40Speaker 1: they're moving at thirteen seconds and they're snapping the ball
- 56:43Speaker 1: at eleven or snapping the ball at ten, rather than
- 56:45Speaker 1: moving at thirteen and snapping the ball at five. Right,
- 56:48Speaker 1: let's give the defense as little time as possible, which
- 56:50Speaker 1: is what I like. Charles's four by one looks for
- 56:53Speaker 1: the rage last preseason. Any updates there, No, I think
- 57:00Speaker 1: trying to think of how many I've seen enough time,
- 57:01Speaker 1: I head no. I think most stuff has been three
- 57:04Speaker 1: by one with the back more often than not to
- 57:10Speaker 1: the solo receiver side. So if we're going off eligibles,
- 57:13Speaker 1: it's more of like a three by two, but one
- 57:15Speaker 1: of the two is the running back in the backfield.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Condensed formations still the same. I saw somebody asked that
- 57:22Speaker 1: Angel all of you also asked that. Yeah, condensed formations
- 57:24Speaker 1: are still a thing. I do think there's a little
- 57:26Speaker 1: more spread. The bills are working in some more spread.
- 57:28Speaker 1: I'm not just saying that because I kind of predicted it.
- 57:29Speaker 1: I think more teams are gonna do that this year.
- 57:31Speaker 1: But yeah, there's a I do think there's been some
- 57:33Speaker 1: more spread. I don't think a ton of four by
- 57:37Speaker 1: one stuff. Definitely not enough that I've made note of it.
- 57:41Speaker 1: I think most stuff has been your two by two
- 57:45Speaker 1: and your your three by one stuff and three by one,
- 57:49Speaker 1: both in terms of like bunch and also just three
- 57:52Speaker 1: eligibles to one side, one to the other. Where am
- 57:58Speaker 1: I hold I wanted to go back?
- 58:00Speaker 2: Uh?
- 58:00Speaker 1: This comment is, how was the first team safety nickel
- 58:03Speaker 1: rotation looking so before CJ. Gardner Johnson went down, it
- 58:06Speaker 1: was good. It was CJ, it was Bishop and d Alford.
- 58:09Speaker 1: They all looked really good. D Alfred, I should also
- 58:11Speaker 1: mention as well, had some several really good flashes and
- 58:13Speaker 1: coverage these first several days, so he's looked good once
- 58:21Speaker 1: and then in dime. As I mentioned earlier, it was
- 58:24Speaker 1: Gino and Gino, Stone and CJ as the deep safeties,
- 58:28Speaker 1: and then Cole, Bishop and d Alford. Is your two
- 58:29Speaker 1: apex players or your you know your slot guys. Uh.
- 58:36Speaker 1: I'll see all the comments that I made with the
- 58:38Speaker 1: apples and orange, just thinking, oh that is good.
- 58:39Speaker 3: There's always money in the ban stand. Well done, guys,
- 58:41Speaker 3: well done, and then everybody's knocking the.
- 58:43Speaker 1: Apples and oranges. That's funny, that's funny. Uh. Noah says,
- 58:48Speaker 1: I feel like Zaine Durant will be the at Olive replacement.
- 58:50Speaker 1: He essentially is like Ed's back up. It's really like
- 58:55Speaker 1: Landed from an odd from perspective, it's Landon and TJ,
- 58:58Speaker 1: and then Ed and Zane. But I still think the
- 59:01Speaker 1: top three are Ed and then Landing TJ. In some
- 59:05Speaker 1: aspect I'm waiting to see when the pads come on
- 59:07Speaker 1: for Zane Durant. Again, that's been my thought for a
- 59:09Speaker 1: lot of the trench stuff.
- 59:10Speaker 3: I haven't I.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Haven't watched a ton of offensive line defensive line aspects
- 59:15Speaker 1: because with the pads on him, I'm just not going
- 59:17Speaker 1: to do that. I'm not gonna say like, oh, this
- 59:19Speaker 1: guy's been you know, even someone who like Andre Jones Junior,
- 59:22Speaker 1: who's been called up a bit for the Bills every
- 59:24Speaker 1: once in a while the past couple of years. He's
- 59:25Speaker 1: been living in the backfield these first three days of
- 59:28Speaker 1: camp as an edge rusher. He no matter who he's against,
- 59:31Speaker 1: it's mainly been second and third teamers. He keeps winning
- 59:33Speaker 1: and keeps getting into the backfield for quote unquote like
- 59:35Speaker 1: would be sacks. But I want to see that happen
- 59:37Speaker 1: when the pads come on. Same thing, like, even if
- 59:39Speaker 1: an offensive lineman's blocking, great, cool, let's see it when
- 59:42Speaker 1: the pads come on. Oh, this guy's really disruptive against
- 59:44Speaker 1: the run in the pass. Is a defensive lineman great
- 59:46Speaker 1: or an edge rusher great? What happens when the pads
- 59:48Speaker 1: come on. So I don't have a ton of feedback
- 59:51Speaker 1: on Zane Duran Right now, I'm waiting for the pads
- 59:53Speaker 1: and I'm waiting for the preseason. More often than not,
- 59:56Speaker 1: Oh Pop says, uh, actually go to eighty four for life,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: who said just checking in as the bringing update on CJ.
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: I have not heard anything since we started this stream
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: about an hour ago. It's the Bills have not given
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: anything official. Pop says, what defensive position is the top
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: need to replace her get better at right now? If
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: CJ Garnder Johnson is hurt for the year or some
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: amount of time, it's safety. It's safety. If not in
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: CJ's fine, I think it's nose tackle. I think you
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: need a I think you need a run based nose tackle.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Doesn't mean it has to be a big guy, but
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: you need a run based nose tackle who's or run
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: or a run based defensive end who can play in
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: the odd front looks and it could also be somebody
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: who and again I want to keep saying this a
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: bunch the odd front defensive ends. So your four eyes
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: at Oliver Landon Jackson, t J. Sanders, Ain Durant, those
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: are the same guys that are going to be the
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: defensive tackles in the even front looks so the one
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: tech and the three tech stuff, right, I think they
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: still need a run based interior defender. I honestly, maybe
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: even two. But I think that's where they need to
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: get better at first. It doesn't have to be a
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: huge guy, right, doesn't mean they have to give Vitavey up.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: But you could get like a DJ Jones or it
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: could have been Sebastian Joseph Day and free agency this
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: past offseason. Right. So I'm gonna say that because that's
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: what I've been chirping at all year. I think they
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: need to get better at that spot. Part of me
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: wanted to say linebacker, but I like how Caleb Elramzor
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: has looked and Keanta Jenkins has actually looked fun too,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: like he's been in good He's gotten beat with some throws,
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: but he's been in good position. The length is showing up,
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: and I've noticed him last offseason. So I'm kind of like,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: okay at linebacker right now. But that's that's another one
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: If CJ.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Garner Johnson's down, the answer safety, If he's fine, the
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: answer is a run based interior defender. And then I
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: would put linebacker like off ball linebacker close after that,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Charles's I heard Stevie was working with Key on this offseason.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Any difference and Key on off the line in terms
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: of wasted motion, I think I would say he maybe
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: looks a bit efficient or smoother. I don't know if
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: I can credit that to Stevie. My issue is that
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: I don't think it was I don't think his issue
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: is the wasted motion off the line. My issue is
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: always the just the route running in the stem and
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: the break. That's a fair question, fair thought.
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: I would say he looks a little.
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: Bit better, but I don't know if I can attribute
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: that to Stevie or not. By Okay, well, I got
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: a lot of these. I got a lot of these.
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: Ryan says it's kem Paum is Key Coleman expected to
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: start over Josh Palmer. I think it is open. I
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: don't think anybody has the inside right now. If I
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: had to put my money on it, I would. I
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: think they're each going to get equal. I think they're
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: gonna get closer up. I don't think either of them
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: is super far ahead of the other, but I do
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: think Palmer is ahead of Coleman on the depth chart
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: right now. Like I think Coleman is wide receiver for
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: but Coleman's still going to get opportunities and still going
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: to see uh uh snaps. John Roberts said, CJ said
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: he's okay, but the training staff said he will need
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: to get an MRI before confirmed.
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: This.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: Don't want to play this game, Oh, Roy, Yeah, Roy
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: says to Corey Couch was getting a little hype on
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: Day one and two. Anything today? Yeah, he was at
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: I liked to Corey Couch. I loved him at Miami.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: The athletic profile I don't think translates to the NFL.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: But he's been pretty much as like the third fourth
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: team safety, even though he's like he was a nickel
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: at Miami and is still kind of getting some nickel looks.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: He had a really nice play today as a single
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: high safety.
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: I don't remember if it was Cover one or Cover three.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: I was looking at something else, but it was definitely
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: single high and someone ran a cross or across field
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: from the offense's right to the left, so couches left
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: to right and he closed on it, drove on it
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and helped make a nice play on the ball, almost
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: came down with an interception. So that was a really
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: encouraging play. He's a guy who I don't know if
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: he's ever going to be more than a practice squad guy,
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: but he could be a low end of the depth
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: chart guy. He's just like nasty plays with some good violence.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: I noted him last year. And it's not just because
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: I'm a miam Met Hurricanes guy and he's a Hurricane.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: But yeah, he flashed to eight a couple of nice
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: places or a couple of nice plays. He shines more
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: when the pads come on because of how physical of
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: a player he is. So yeah, that's fair. Ray says,
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: how's t J.
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: Parker doing.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: I'll be honest, I'm gonna throw I'm gonna bucket Parker
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: with the rest of the Trench conversation. I haven't watched
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: him a bunch because I I'm not this is just
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: me personally. I'm not going to evaluate defensive lineman and
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: offensive lineman without having pads on. He looks good, he's moving. Well,
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: we'll see what happens when the pads come on. Oh yeah,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: Charles says, he yeah. Man. So to Tony Man, I'm
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: I am crazy hype for Miami this year, and I
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: was already hype last year. I was kind of down,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: like I obviously losing Cam Warren and I'm going to
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: go to Carson Beck. But I was so hype on
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: Baine being finally like healthy, and I am. I am
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: extremely hype for Miami this year. They have legit receivers,
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: they're all their online is still reloaded enough. Fletcher came back,
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: They're gonna be able to run the ball, they got
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: weapons at receiver, they got a legit QB. They're nasty
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: on defense. Bryce Frosgerald put on some muscle and they're
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: gonna put him at Nickel. I still want them to
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: stay at free safety. But I'm crazy hype for Miami
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: this year. Yeah coming here. Uh have you noticed fewer
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: compressed and I'm guessing I mean condensed formations by the
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: offense and last season, Yes, but it's still condensed more
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: than anything.
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: I do think again, like I've noted and I've noted
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: in my prediction for this season, and also what I've
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: seen the first couple of days there has been more spread,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: and I do think we'll see more spread, but it's
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: still gonna be largely condensed stuff like if they're I'm
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: just making this up, but say they were like a
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: seventy five percent condensed formation team last year. I think
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: this year they'll be like sixty seven percent or sixty six.
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: I don't think it's gonna be like a fifty to
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: fifty split or maybe a huge percentage point drop. But
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: I do think you are going to see more spread,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: especially in tempo times, especially at especially especially at end
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: of like end of half situations, too minutural situations. I
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: do think you'll get the bills and teams across the
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: league spreading defenses out more, trying to mitigate how much
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: they can disguise and muddy stuff up and go from there.
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: Roy says, any available free agent you would sign today,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: you know what we got time. Let me look up
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: an available free agent list while we're here. Also, I'm
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: not gonna pull them up because again I'm by myself,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: and I feel corny doing that. But I see Havoc
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: your comment and then Charles your comment.
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: Thank you very much for the shout.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: It was. It was unreal to do the show with
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: Mina and be on her show, and then the same
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: exact feeling being on Football three oh one with Nate
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Tice this past week and breaking down top ten defenses
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: like it was Nate having me on to just talk
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: football and schematics and not having it be just bills
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: bait was one of the coolest things ever I put in. Obviously,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: you know I do bills work here, but I study
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: so much football across the whole league.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: I'm watching tape of.
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: Tons of teams across the league, and I feel like
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: I can speak to the whole league as a whole.
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: And so getting on like the best schematic show in
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: football three oh one and talking about the top ten
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: defenses and essentially Nate and I talk about like fifteen
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: sixteen defenses.
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that was awesome. So I appreciate you, Charles and Havoc.
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: I appreciate both of the both you for those shoutouts.
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: That's super cool. NFL Available free Agents twenty twenty six. No,
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: I want current types. No, somebody gave me a list.
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: I don't know. Somebody.
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: Somebody give me a list.
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: Somebody tell me where to go for a good free
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: agent list?
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: Is it Mike Clay?
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Does Mike Clay still do the list? I got an
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: ESPN list right now, let's see, Okay, I don't know
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: anybody to yell at me.
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: I would sign the day.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Please don't yell at me. Mm. Interesting, Trevon Diggs is
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: still Jonah Williams Son. Oh you know what if? Oh?
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: If CJ. Gardner Johnson is hurt. This is somebody who
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: I've liked for a couple of years, since he was
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: in Dallas. It's the fit. Isn't gonna be the exact same.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: It's not an ideal pairing, but I would take this
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: guy over Gino and DeMar Hamlin. I would sign Donovan
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: Wilson the safety.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: If CJ.
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: Garner Johnson is hurt for a significant amount of time,
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: I would sign Donovan Wilson. Thomas's thoughts on Josh Allen
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: staying after practice more lately than before interesting, right, I
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: don't is he is he is? It?
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: Is he staying more after practice?
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: Like I saw him stay today to throw at receivers,
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: But he's done that in previous years. I didn't see
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: him do too much of that yesterday or the day before.
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: Unless I'm out. If I'm missing something, feel free to
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: let me know. But I haven't noticed him do anything
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: different than previous years, like he's always kind of stayed
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: after last year on day one and two and three,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: he stayed each day to throw with Palmer. I haven't
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: noticed anything different too much, but I may it's possible
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: I'm missing something. Roy, Now you have me on a
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: rabbit hole. I'm going back and looking for more free
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: agents NFL current free agents. I need a list. No,
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: I don't want anybody who's a free agent man. You
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: would think that this would be like an easy thing
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to find. I'm gonna go to try and find Mike.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: I think Mike Clay is the Twitter guy who always
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: has like an available free agent type of thing, but
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: he probably doesn't have it anymore. I'm gonna say Donovan Wilson, Roy,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I want to get deeper, but I can't find a
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: better list. I'm gonna say I'm gonna say and Wilson
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: if there's anything with uh, if there's anything with CJ.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Gardner Johnson. Really disappointing about c J. Gardner Johnson. We'll
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: see what happens with him. He's been the best player
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: for the Bills in camp so far. I was absolutely
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: gutted when he went down. I didn't even want to
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: watch practice anymore. It got me right in the fields,
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: and not just because I've been advocating for him. Being
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: on the Bills for years, and I think his play
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: style is a great fit and his attitude on the
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: field is a great fit. Off the field, it's a
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: you know, obviously a different thing. But yeah, really uh
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: disappointing that, Oh, Charles says, besides the wins and losses,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: what are you specifically looking for from Joe Brady and
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: Leonard in their first year? Oh, this is a really
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: good question, Leonard. I could give like seventy different answers.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing for me for Leonard is twofold.
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: How does he stop the run? I get well, is
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: he able to stop the run? And if he does,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: how Because I think if he does, it's it's gonna
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: be mainly scheme based than it is like Jimmy's and
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: Joe's and guys winning up front? So how does Leonard
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: stop the run? And how different is the game plan
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: week to week? Like what I'm expecting from Leonard and
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: kind of looking for It doesn't have to be this way,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: but I am looking for, you know, the baseline in terms.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: Of like what he is.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: There is going to be like a core operating rhythm
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: style philosophy to what he is. But I'm looking for, like, Okay,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: this week, they really ratcheted up the blitz rate. This
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: week they played a ton more cover three. This week,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: they played a ton more quarters. This week, they used
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: a ton of simulated pressures. This week they did a
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: ton of rum blitzes. I'm looking for more matchup based
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: things week to week. That's what I'm looking for, just
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: because and again, I could get super granular. I could
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: give like really seventy things for Jim Leonard. Actually know what.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: This might be a fun episode topic like in that
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: break between the preseason and the first regular season week.
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: This might be a fun episode of like expectations for
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: each guy in their first year. This might be a
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: fun type episode. But yeah, that's the easiest way for
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: me to broadbrush with Leonard, because my biggest thing with
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: McDermott I think McDermott's a good defensive coach. I think
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: he's a good head coach, and I think the Bills
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: defense on the whole is a good defense. My biggest
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: thing with Sean McDermott was the lack of matchup specificity,
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: especially come playoff time, and everybody and their mother had
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: their catalog on tape, knew who and what the Bills were,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: and that's hard to live that way in the playoffs,
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: especially against the best players and the best coaches and
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: the best teams. And I thought they were too reactive
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: versus coming up with a curated game plan. So that's
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: what I'm looking forward for Leonard Brady. In terms of
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator, I'm gonna bucket into things, and it's
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: terms offensive coordinator, head coach. In terms of offensive coordinator,
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: I'm looking for more play action. I'm looking for more
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: play action to match their core run concepts. So you know,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: they run midzone week, they run duo. They already run
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: some play action that mimics the mid zone week. That's fine.
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: I want more play action that looks like they're running duo.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: So let's marry the play action with our top run concepts.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: That's what I'm looking for from Joe Brady for like,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: as an offensive coordinator, the layers from last year and
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: trying to create some explosives through airyards, not just relying
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: on explosives by you know, pitching it to Coolio Shakir
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: and letting him break two tackles and take it twenty
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: five yards. I want more, you know, seventeen yard air throws.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: I doesn't have to be. But let's get Josh Allen's
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: average up to target. You know it was seven point
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: nine I believe last year. Let's get it up to
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: nine point nine, eight point nine something like that. Like
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: I want to see some let's push the ball down field.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: Let's open things up a little bit more. Let's marry
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: and then let's get more play action. Let's marry our
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: top run concepts with play action. As a head coach,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I'm looking for him to just have his finger on
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: the pulse in every way, shape or form. I don't
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: know what kind of head coach he's going to be.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: I don't know if he is going to be the
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: uncle or best friend or whatever that Alec Anderson said.
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: I don't know if he's gonna be a huge stickler.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: We have no idea. So I'm looking for I'm looking
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: for him to just be in control in totality top
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: to bottom, start to finish, and then offensively, I'm looking
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: for that specific layering and just kind of wielding things
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: a little bit more. I know he's a big If
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: it's not broke, don't fix the kind of guy. But
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: let's let's lean into our tendencies a little more and
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: then play off of them to confuse defenses and make
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: them think, oh, well, here comes a because they always
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: do a here and then oh they didn't be or c. Yeah,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: that's a good question. That's a good question to kind
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: of see, you know what we're looking for from uh
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: Brady and Leonard. When I'm looking for the best pizza
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: in Buffalo, New York, I go to One Pie Pizza,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: Sweet Sauce, pie cup and char Pepper a great cheese
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: of sauce ratio. You take a bite, the cheese doesn't
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: slide off or anything. It doesn't get messy. And that's
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: not because I ask for light sauce, Like they just
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: know the ratios to put together. But you can get
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: light sauce, you can get it well done. You can
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: get whatever you want. You can get a variety of
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: toppings and specialty pizzas made. They have their own homemade
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: blue cheese that is phenomenal. They make really great salads.
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: They have a catering division called Elevated Catering of Buffalo.
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I've had them do several events over the past several years.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: Every time it's phenomenal, And yeah, I get like pizza
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: with it. But they do all these different crazy mac
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: and cheese dishes. I shouldn't say crazy, just creative. They're
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: really good. They do really good chicken and rice dishes,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: so they do like real meals, like real food, but
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: you can also get like pizza on top of it.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: They are absolutely phenomenal in every way, shape and form.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: And as I mentioned every year and every time I
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: speak about them, they're so generous. I always say they're
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: good people, making great food, toys for tots every holiday season,
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: the partnering with Rosweld Try and Knock out Cancer, partnering
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: with the Alzheimer's Foundation. They there's just so in partnering
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: with the SPCA, there's a lot of drives and initiatives
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: that I'm not even naming that they take part in.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: But they're just good for the community. Aside from providing
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: great food to everyone, they're really good people making really
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: good foods. So get yourself some one Pi pizza. If
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: you live in Buffalo, get yourself one Pi pizza. If
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: you're coming to Buffalo for the scrimmage or the preseason,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: get yourself some one pie pizza. Tell them this guy's
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: coverage sent you. They have a pizza that's named after
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: the show, and it's also got Josh Allen in the name.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: It's called the Cover One Alan Goat. It is phenomenal.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: Get yourself some one Pie pizza. I'm gonna thro out
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: the bandess is Tootles, folks, because we are going to
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: start to wind down.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: Pop says, are you coming back to camp more days?
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: I am not. I am going to the scrimmage on Saturday.
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: Next Saturday. Yeah, week from today, I'm going to the scrimmage.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I am not going to camp anymore days. Unless they
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: kind of add one on a weekend, I'll go. But
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: day job, too much stuff going on to swing that again.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: So yeah, I'm not going back to camp for more days.
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I apologize. I know I appreciate a lot of the
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: kind of the acknowledgment and attention I've got the past
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: several years for my camp notes. Every time we get closer,
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I see people kind of messaging me and saying like, oh,
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: you're going to camp, I'm looking for your notes and stuff.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: So yeah, I usually get to the first three sometimes
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: four practices, but no more for me this year. But
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: I will be going to the scrimmage. I'll be putting
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: a bunch of notes and everything together for that.
- 1:17:30Speaker 3: I might even do an.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: Episode after I get back from the scrimmage, so next
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Saturday night late night, like a scrimmage post game maybe
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: something like that.
- 1:17:38Speaker 3: I'll also be doing all.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: The post games for the preseason games as well, just
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: as a little update and thing for the channel. Hope
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: you folks enjoyed this episode. If you did and you're
