- 0:05Speaker 1: All right, guys, I'll take your questions here. Yeah, I mean,
- 0:16Speaker 1: I think you said it right there. I mean, they
- 0:18Speaker 1: made some really tough catches. It's really, you know, critical
- 0:21Speaker 1: times and pivotal times throughout the course of the game. And,
- 0:23Speaker 1: you know, when you play man coverage, damn near the
- 0:27Speaker 1: whole game like we do, you're going to have some
- 0:30Speaker 1: of those things where they're 50-50 balls and credit their
- 0:32Speaker 1: quarterback and their kids for making some plays on the
- 0:34Speaker 1: football in tough moments. Do you feel like their size
- 0:42Speaker 1: kind of wore down your defense by the end of
- 0:43Speaker 1: the game? Yeah, but I don't think we helped them
- 0:45Speaker 1: on offense, right? I mean, we're putting them back out
- 0:47Speaker 1: there and the one at the end there, I mean,
- 0:48Speaker 1: I probably should have punted the ball, but I want
- 0:50Speaker 1: to try to go get a score. We'll put them
- 0:53Speaker 1: in short fields a couple times there because of three
- 0:54Speaker 1: and outs and punting into the wind there was a
- 0:57Speaker 1: little bit of a challenge. I think those kids on
- 1:00Speaker 1: the defensive front played their tail off, to be honest
- 1:02Speaker 1: with you. Played hard throughout the whole time. I'm sure
- 1:04Speaker 1: there's going to be some stuff on the tape that
- 1:05Speaker 1: we're going to have to address and fix, but they
- 1:09Speaker 1: can't just sit there and take punches the whole game.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We've got to help them out in other phases of
- 1:13Speaker 1: the game. What did you learn from your guys today?
- 1:19Speaker 1: I think that I've said it publicly. I've said it
- 1:22Speaker 1: privately to our team. Our biggest worry coming out of
- 1:24Speaker 1: week one, there wasn't any adverse moments in our first
- 1:26Speaker 1: football game. This team is a whole different animal. We
- 1:29Speaker 1: were going to have to toe the line and play
- 1:31Speaker 1: a Big Ten football team. They were going to try
- 1:33Speaker 1: to lean on us and run the football down your throat.
- 1:35Speaker 1: They're going to play up in the face of your receivers.
- 1:37Speaker 1: They're going to play pressure-style defense.
- 1:40Speaker 2: We were going to figure out how we were going
- 1:41Speaker 2: to respond.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think sometimes we did a good job. Other times
- 1:44Speaker 1: it maybe just wasn't to the quality of what you wanted.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Some of those plays and the timing and the rhythm
- 1:48Speaker 1: of things, when they're just off a hair nobody cares
- 1:52Speaker 1: how far they're off.
- 1:53Speaker 2: They're off, right?
- 1:54Speaker 1: So, you know, you're in third-down situations, and they're coming
- 1:57Speaker 1: after you. You know they're coming after you. You've got
- 1:58Speaker 1: to make the plays.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But I think, you know, for me, it's week two.
- 2:04Speaker 2: We've got a long way to go.
- 2:05Speaker 1: This certainly isn't going to define us. We've got to
- 2:08Speaker 1: see this as an opportunity to grow and continue to
- 2:09Speaker 1: get better. And I think some guys' individual efforts, I
- 2:12Speaker 1: think some of them were really good.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I think some guys showed up in some key moments today.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It seemed like early in the game, the tackling was
- 2:17Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Well, I mean, that's a very perimeter-oriented operation.
- 2:33Speaker 1: They want to play fast, they want to spread the
- 2:34Speaker 1: field and get the receivers out there and throw screens
- 2:37Speaker 1: to fast players and Easier said than done.
- 2:40Speaker 2: You've got to go out there and you've got to
- 2:41Speaker 2: tackle them.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I thought for the most part they did a decent
- 2:44Speaker 1: job of that in the first half, but there's too
- 2:46Speaker 1: many throwing shoulders in there for me.
- 2:48Speaker 2: You've got to wrap up and you've got to go
- 2:49Speaker 2: get the guy to the ground. It's just what it is.
- 2:51Speaker 2: We've got to improve.
- 2:51Speaker 1: That's one of the areas we've got to work on. Offensively,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you're heading for a few big ones, but I guess
- 2:54Speaker 1: a Big Ten defense. What is the challenge of a
- 2:55Speaker 1: more drawn out no really rhythm in the run game
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know the inability to run the football doesn't help
- 3:07Speaker 1: the quarterback out so then it becomes on his shoulders
- 3:10Speaker 1: which then stresses the protection and then you know all
- 3:13Speaker 1: of a sudden you can feel that as the defensive
- 3:15Speaker 1: coordinator and all of a sudden now you pin your
- 3:16Speaker 1: ears back and you probably play a little bit more
- 3:18Speaker 1: aggressive add the fact that the score is you know
- 3:21Speaker 1: a two-score game at the time and it's really like
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's a it's a recipe for disaster to be honest
- 3:27Speaker 1: with you so we've got to figure out how to
- 3:30Speaker 1: run it consistently. You know, we can use Caleb to
- 3:32Speaker 1: do that a little bit. But these guys, like I said,
- 3:34Speaker 1: they challenged us. They challenged the line of scrimmage, and
- 3:36Speaker 1: we weren't able to get any consistency moving in that
- 3:39Speaker 1: part of it. So then falling on a quarterback in
- 3:41Speaker 1: his second start, I mean, I think it's a little
- 3:43Speaker 1: unfair to continue just to ask him to drop back
- 3:45Speaker 1: pass and to tackle as a drop back pass against,
- 3:47Speaker 1: you know, pretty damn good pass.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Rushers the whole game.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So, you know, I think a lot of things factored
- 3:52Speaker 1: into that. But, you know, ultimately at the end of
- 3:54Speaker 1: the day, you want to run the football better than
- 3:55Speaker 1: we did today.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yardage doesn't matter to me. It really doesn't.
- 4:10Speaker 1: It's about the score. So you go into halftime, you're down...
- 4:15Speaker 1: you know, a couple of scores, you get the ball
- 4:16Speaker 1: coming out to start the third quarter. And that's a
- 4:17Speaker 1: pretty pivotal drive in the game. You know, when you
- 4:19Speaker 1: go back to the coin toss and trying to get
- 4:21Speaker 1: that first possession in the second half, you know, we
- 4:23Speaker 1: were able to do it. You just got to produce
- 4:25Speaker 1: some points there and you got to just get, you
- 4:26Speaker 1: got to play a little bit better in.
- 4:27Speaker 2: The third quarter, uh, coming out of locker room.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So, uh, fortunately we weren't able to get anything going
- 4:32Speaker 1: at first drive on offense. And, you know, from there,
- 4:34Speaker 1: then it, you know, it kind of did get out
- 4:36Speaker 1: of hand a little bit. So, but I think that,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, when they leaned on us a little bit,
- 4:40Speaker 1: give Maryland a lot of credit, man. Um, give coaches and,
- 4:43Speaker 1: you know, his crew a good, you know, kudos for
- 4:46Speaker 1: getting those guys ready to go and they played hard
- 4:47Speaker 1: the entire game. So, we got a lot of things
- 4:49Speaker 1: to correct, a lot of things to work on this
- 4:50Speaker 1: week in practice and we'll go to work hard at that.
- 4:53Speaker 2: You talked about the inability to run today.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Was it anything special that Maryland's line was doing or,
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, what did you see at field level? Yeah,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I mean, I think I'm going to take that a
- 5:04Speaker 1: lot of ways, but I think that, you know, there's,
- 5:07Speaker 1: it's a tough front to run against. I mean, it's
- 5:09Speaker 1: just what it is. You know, so, You've got to
- 5:12Speaker 1: be able to create edges. You've got to be able
- 5:14Speaker 1: to get the ball to the perimeter to your fast players.
- 5:16Speaker 1: And you've got to be able to block really well
- 5:18Speaker 1: in the perimeter and allow those guys. And these guys
- 5:20Speaker 1: have got to win their one-on-one battles. So, you know,
- 5:22Speaker 1: we weren't able to do that today in some moments.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And we're going to just watch the tape, address it,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and fix it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: A couple more for Kirk. You mentioned you thought a
- 5:29Speaker 2: few guys played well. Anybody in particular you were pleased with?
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought Shamar Porter showed up today. You know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: did a good job. I thought we, you know. Some
- 5:38Speaker 1: guys did a good job on it. Like I said,
- 5:39Speaker 1: those defensive front guys, I think those D linemen played
- 5:41Speaker 1: their tail off for the most part. I mean, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 1: you're talking about statistics and yardage. I mean, Maryland didn't
- 5:46Speaker 1: run the ball either in the first half at all. So, um,
- 5:49Speaker 1: but credit their quarterback. I mean, he was able to
- 5:51Speaker 1: hang in there and like I said, make some tough
- 5:52Speaker 1: throws and those receivers did a great job making some
- 5:55Speaker 1: contested catches in key moments.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Yeah, just that, right.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I mean, um, Your attitude and your mood is a
- 6:05Speaker 1: little different. It's human nature in life when it's all
- 6:07Speaker 1: going good. I think you're ultimately going to be defined
- 6:10Speaker 1: when you get hit in the mouth. We got hit
- 6:11Speaker 1: in the mouth today, so we're going to have to
- 6:12Speaker 1: bounce back. As I just told them, nobody's coming to
- 6:15Speaker 1: save us. If you're a real competitor, you don't want
- 6:18Speaker 1: anybody to come save you. You want to get better.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You want to improve. You want to learn from today.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You want to be able to address the tape and
- 6:23Speaker 1: fix it. That's what we're going to do. Coach, any
- 6:26Speaker 1: update on Eshaan Carter and Sincere Bowers?
- 6:30Speaker 2: Both of them went back in the game. Thank you.
