- 0:01Speaker 1: Thank Heaven, the crisis, the danger is past, and the
- 0:05Speaker 1: lingering illness is over at last, and the fever called
- 0:08Speaker 1: living is conquered at last. Sadly I know I am
- 0:13Speaker 1: shorn of my strength, and no muscle I move as
- 0:17Speaker 1: I lie at full length, But no matter, I feel
- 0:21Speaker 1: I am better at length, and I rest so composedly
- 0:25Speaker 1: now in my bed that any beholder might fancy me dead,
- 0:29Speaker 1: might start at beholding me thinking me dead. The moaning
- 0:34Speaker 1: and groaning, the sighing, and the sobbing are quieted now
- 0:39Speaker 1: with that horrible throbbing at heart. Ah, that horrible, horrible throbbing.
- 0:44Speaker 1: The sickness, the nausea, the pitiless pain have ceased with
- 0:49Speaker 1: the fever that maddened my brain, with the fever called
- 0:53Speaker 1: living that burned in my brain. And oh, of all tortures,
- 0:58Speaker 1: that torture, the worst has abated, the terrible torture of thirst.
- 1:03Speaker 1: For the Naphthalene river of passion accursed. I have drink
- 1:07Speaker 1: of a water that quenches all thirst, of a water
- 1:11Speaker 1: that flows with a lullaby sound, from a spring but
- 1:14Speaker 1: a very few feet underground, from a cavern, not very
- 1:18Speaker 1: far down underground, And all let it never be foolishly
- 1:22Speaker 1: said that my room, it is gloomy and narrow, my bed,
- 1:26Speaker 1: for man never slept in a different bed, And to
- 1:30Speaker 1: sleep you must lumber in just such a bed. My
- 1:34Speaker 1: tantalized spirit here blindly reposes forgetting or never regretting its roses,
- 1:41Speaker 1: its old agitations of myrtles and roses. For now, while
- 1:47Speaker 1: so quietly lying, it fancies a holier odor about it
- 1:51Speaker 1: of pansies, a rosemary odor, commingled with pansies, with rue,
- 1:58Speaker 1: and the beautiful puritan pans And so it lies happily
- 2:03Speaker 1: bathing in many a dream of the truth and the
- 2:06Speaker 1: beauty of Annie, drowned in a bath of the tresses
- 2:10Speaker 1: of Annie. She tenderly kissed me, she fondly caressed, and
- 2:18Speaker 1: then I fell gently to sleep on her breast, deeply
- 2:21Speaker 1: to sleep from the heaven of her breast. When the
- 2:26Speaker 1: light was extinguished, she covered me warm, and she prayed
- 2:30Speaker 1: to the angels to keep me from harm, to the
- 2:32Speaker 1: Queen of angels, to shield me from harm. And I
- 2:37Speaker 1: lies so composedly now in my bed, knowing her love,
- 2:43Speaker 1: that you fancy me dead. And I rest so contentedly
- 2:46Speaker 1: now in my bed, with her love at my breast,
- 2:50Speaker 1: that you fancy me dead, that you shudder to look
- 2:53Speaker 1: at me, thinking me dead. But my heart, it is
- 2:56Speaker 1: brighter than all the many stars in the sky, where
- 3:00Speaker 1: it sparkles with any It glows with the light of
- 3:03Speaker 1: the love of my Annie, with the thought of the
- 3:06Speaker 1: light of the eyes of my Annie.
