Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and a sense of humor.
• 15:54
  Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
• 15:55
Speaker 1: Yeah, there's that, Well look who I live with.
• 15:58
Speaker 5: Kind of got of humor.
• 15:59
Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, there's that.
• 15:59
Speaker 2: Well, look who I live with.
• 16:00
Speaker 1: Kind of gotta have one, I mean well, I wanted to bring you in here and talk to you just a moment about your career in drag racing, and it started with I have a career yeah, yeah, yeah, you do that's the humor right there, that ain't that.
• 16:15
Speaker 1: No, no, seriously because, uh, I met you.
• 16:18
Speaker 1: I think it was just after the Junior Drag Racing series, was it not just after that?
• 16:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was in Pomona like 2006, 2007.
• 16:34
  Speaker 1: Seven yeah.
• 16:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, so I got started with Junior drag racing when Chase was eight, so Chase is now 36.
• 16:42
Speaker 2: So what 28 years ago?
• 16:44
Speaker 1: when he was eight years old.
• 16:45
Speaker 1: So you headed up the southeast region, didn't you?
• 16:48
Speaker 2: Actually just the Houston Raceway Park.
• 16:50
  Speaker 1: Houston Raceway.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: I was like track mom and I just helped the crew out there and kept up with all the ladders and all the kids and made sure they were in the correct lane.
• 17:02
Speaker 1: How many kids were in the junior drag racing program at the time when you were in it?
• 17:08
Speaker 2: On a good day.
• 17:09
  Speaker 2: 40 to 50.
• 17:11
Speaker 1: Really yeah, wow, it was huge, yeah, and I guess it still is.
• 17:15
  Speaker 1: It's probably bigger.
• 17:17
Speaker 2: It is bigger was huge, yeah, and I guess it still is.
• 17:20
  Speaker 2: It's probably bigger.
• 17:20
  Speaker 2: It's, it's it is bigger.
• 17:21
  Speaker 2: Um.
• 17:21
Speaker 2: I'll tell you this um, in 1999, chase went to the junior dragster nationals.
• 17:25
Speaker 2: That's when they just had one um, that was an indie, and there was 900 cars whoa.
• 17:31
  Speaker 2: After that.
• 17:33
Speaker 2: Um, that's when they decided they need an eastern conference final and a western conference final.
• 17:37
Speaker 2: And so that's what they decided they need an Eastern Conference Final and a Western Conference Final.
• 17:38
Speaker 2: And so that's what they started doing.
• 17:40
Speaker 2: And I want to say it's coming up in like a couple weeks in June, when the kids are obviously on summer break.
• 17:47
Speaker 2: And I want to say Bristol is one of the tracks, and maybe Dallas.
• 17:55
Speaker 2: They stopped doing it in Indy.
• 17:59
Speaker 1: Because there's just too much going on.
• 18:01
Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a lot, but it really helped out in 2000 when they split the kids, because each track back in the day when we were running it, each track could bring 30 kids.
• 18:13
Speaker 2: So it was a team of 10.
• 18:15
Speaker 2: So we'd take three teams and it was ages 8 all the way to 18.
• 18:19
  Speaker 2: 18?
• 18:20
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was 18, right.
• 18:23
  Speaker 2: 16, 18?
• 18:24
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 18:24
Speaker 2: You could race up until 18.
• 18:27
  Speaker 1: Wow.
• 18:27
Speaker 1: Yeah, and you could get a big 18-year-old boy in that little bitty car.
• 18:31
Speaker 2: Now of course they just race against their age group yeah.
• 18:35
Speaker 2: So, like an 8-year-old wouldn't race against an 18-year-old.
• 18:40
Speaker 2: And now, um, you can even start your kids as young as five years old.
• 18:44
Speaker 2: It was eight back then, but now it's five years old you know it's so funny.
• 18:49
  Speaker 1: Where's your grandson?
• 18:50
Speaker 2: your grandson is here, yeah yeah, we need to get him signed that's not gonna happen yeah, but we're already working on my grandson I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure.
• 18:58
Speaker 2: And the college education and all that, yeah, yeah actually I saw um john harden, um harden's race cars.
• 19:04
Speaker 2: He built some of the first junior dragsters.
• 19:07
Speaker 2: He actually built, uh, erica and courtney enders dragsters that were in the movie right on track and they're one of the.
• 19:13
Speaker 2: They're the dragsters that are in the museum in pomona.
• 19:17
Speaker 2: It's john harden harden's race cars.
• 19:19
Speaker 2: So I saw him the other day and I told him I said you got one more in you because he's kind of retired yeah so I'm like you got one more in you because I my grandson's gonna have to have a harden's race car yeah and he said sheila may, yes, absolutely absolutely I got you.
• 19:33
Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you know well, you know, all I can relate it to is, you know, with amy especially doing the volleyball thing yeah and that's kind of what it is with a motor, because the parents are all involved, the brothers, the sisters, the whole family goes.
• 19:48
Speaker 1: Yeah, you cheer on your team, your car, your driver and uh, it's a, it's a racing event, a, yeah, and it's tons of fun.
• 19:57
Speaker 2: Oh, my God, it's so fun, like when we used to go.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: My mom and dad, who my mom's here, my mom and dad would travel with us, and even my grandmother, who was like in her 80s years ago.
• 20:09
Speaker 2: She went all the way to Denver, colorado, with us when we went to the Junior Dragster Nationals and in between, like the days when you're not running.
• 20:20
Speaker 2: You'd go up to like red rock and just like so many memories from drag racing and when we were in indie we'd go down to the stream and take pictures.
• 20:27
  Speaker 2: I mean, it's just.
• 20:28
Speaker 2: You think all it is is racing, but it's.
• 20:31
Speaker 2: It's more than that, because you get to go off with your family and friends and these kids create lifelong friendships.
• 20:37
Speaker 2: You know from drag racing and I will say this um, you know, a lot of people heard about chase's um incident that he had and they go oh my gosh, he's got to stop racing.
• 20:49
Speaker 2: And I was like, well, let me just tell you this if you were in your regular car going 150 miles an hour, you probably would not have walked away.
• 20:59
Speaker 2: And I'm an advocate for drag racing.
• 21:02
Speaker 2: We wear all our safety equipment and I feel at that speed he is safer in his dragster than he is in his Corvette in his daily driver in his truck.
• 21:14
Speaker 2: You know, because you've got a roll cage, you have a five-point safety harness, you have a Hans device on it.
• 21:20
Speaker 2: It keeps your neck from breaking completely off.
• 21:22
  Speaker 3: Helmet.
• 21:23
Speaker 2: Yeah, helmet fire-retardant, suits, neck, I mean just everything.
• 21:28
Speaker 2: So I hate sometimes when people say that I understand if you're not familiar with drag racing and you don't know.
• 21:34
Speaker 2: Yes, that sounds scary, but really it's not.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: And my point is this when Chase was eight years old, he was playing with a friend and his friend fell on him and broke his clavicle.
• 21:44
Speaker 2: I'm like it wouldn't have happened if he was in his dragster.
• 21:49
Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
• 21:51
Speaker 1: That's one way of looking at it.
• 21:52
  Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
• 21:54
Speaker 1: Well, look at the friends that we all made.
• 21:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, because I met him at the drag race in Las Vegas.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: Let me think I don't remember it very well, but How's your clavicle Stan?
• 22:07
Speaker 3: A different drag race.
• 22:08
Speaker 3: How's your clavicle buddy?
• 22:09
  Speaker 3: Yeah?
• 22:10
Speaker 1: There's a picture somewhere on the internet with he and I and Greg Enders with the great big glass, whatever.
• 22:17
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 22:17
Speaker 1: Yeah, and then I think that he met you at Drag Strip, yeah, yeah, and so we all have this big family all through cars and racing and showing, and it's been a lifetime a wonderful career for me really.
• 22:35
Speaker 2: Yeah, it sure has yeah it has.
• 22:38
Speaker 1: It's great to have you here and good to see you.
• 22:40
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 22:40
Speaker 2: I only get to see you twice a year now.
• 22:42
Speaker 1: I was talking about Stan's shrinking car collection.
• 22:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sorry, can we get her a water?
• 22:50
Speaker 2: Get her something heavier than water, I'll put it like this If anybody has some extra parking spaces, that's what he's looking for.
• 22:59
Speaker 1: Really Huh, so you can buy more cars.
• 23:02
Speaker 3: You just need to park them somewhere.
• 23:03
  Speaker 2: No, we just.
• 23:04
  Speaker 3: Logical to me.
• 23:05
Speaker 2: We're out of parking spaces as we speak.
• 23:08
Speaker 3: You know they make these lift things so you can kind of double stack.
• 23:10
Speaker 3: Oh, we have those.
• 23:11
  Speaker 2: Uh-huh yes.
• 23:12
Speaker 3: We have those doubled up.
• 23:13
Speaker 3: They're double stacked, yeah, sorry.
• 23:14
Speaker 3: Sorry, I made a mistake oh just a little note.
• 23:17
Speaker 2: So in future car shows I'm not sure when Grandma Kiki and I are going to get this started, but we are working on a kid's little car show you can bring your little electric little ride on cars.
• 23:31
Speaker 2: There's one we just announced.
• 23:32
Speaker 2: There's one going on next weekend.
• 23:34
  Speaker 1: Oh.
• 23:34
Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll find it for you.
• 23:36
  Speaker 3: Go ahead Anyway.
• 23:37
Speaker 2: I'm hoping to eventually add that to our Lupe Tortilla.
• 23:41
Speaker 2: We could do laps out here around here, yes, and we need to get the In Wheel Time Ladies Auxiliary involved with them, so that they can all coordinate that.
• 23:49
Speaker 1: Yeah, I know that you're not busy or doing anything, so I'm thinking the Ladies Auxiliary, you could head that up.
• 23:55
  Speaker 1: Yeah, it's.
• 23:56
  Speaker 2: The ladies' auxiliary.
• 23:56
Speaker 2: You could head that up.

• 24:11
Speaker 1: You met him today, oh.
