Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on
- 0:12Speaker 1: Inside the Birds. I'm Jeff Mosher alongside the man who
- 0:16Speaker 1: breaks down the tape, Greg Cosell. We've already broken down
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Eagles defense in their twenty four to fifteen loss
- 0:22Speaker 1: to the Bears on Black Friday, and now Greg, it
- 0:26Speaker 1: is becoming a weekly ritual that we pick on the
- 0:29Speaker 1: Eagles offense, which only scored fifteen points once again, couldn't
- 0:33Speaker 1: run the ball very windy night, had trouble passing the ball.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So if I ask you for your big picture standout
- 0:40Speaker 1: from this game that might be different than the first
- 0:43Speaker 1: twelve weeks, it would be well, yeah, I added that
- 0:48Speaker 1: caveat in there, that might be different.
- 0:51Speaker 2: You know, when you're watching the game, you don't necessarily
- 0:53Speaker 2: think about a number of plays. I mean, honest, the
- 0:55Speaker 2: team seems like they have the ball all the time.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Then you think, oh, gee, they're running a lot of plays.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But you know, watching the game, I wasn't thinking, oh,
- 1:03Speaker 2: the Eagles don't seem to have the ball. And then
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know, halftime comes and I actually looked at this,
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, statuet on my iPad, and so they ran
- 1:10Speaker 2: seventeen plays and I'm like, that's kind of unheard of
- 1:14Speaker 2: in an NFL game to run seventeen plays in a
- 1:17Speaker 2: half and they gained eighty three yards. In one of
- 1:20Speaker 2: those plays gained thirty yards, So sixteen plays gained fifty
- 1:23Speaker 2: three yards, which you know, you almost don't know what
- 1:28Speaker 2: to make of that, And I'm just being honest. Yeah,
- 1:30Speaker 2: I mean, that's but you know, when we spoke about
- 1:35Speaker 2: the defense, and you know, I made the general point
- 1:37Speaker 2: that you know, then you get into the third quarter
- 1:40Speaker 2: and it's ten to nine after the Brown touchdown, and
- 1:44Speaker 2: in what ways based on this season I'm not going
- 1:46Speaker 2: back last year or twenty twenty two or you know,
- 1:49Speaker 2: based on this season, in what way is that game
- 1:52Speaker 2: different than a lot of Eagles games this year.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's it's it's a fair point. How about this.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I mean, one thing that's interesting that I think we
- 2:01Speaker 1: can discuss from this game from what you observed in
- 2:04Speaker 1: your notes. You know, it was pretty early in the season,
- 2:07Speaker 1: five six weeks in where we were saying, hey, the
- 2:10Speaker 1: Eagles offense passing offense is really thriving against the blitz,
- 2:14Speaker 1: against man coverage, but struggling in zone. Yeah, and teams
- 2:20Speaker 1: were blitzing them and then backing off. Remember the Rams
- 2:23Speaker 1: did that, the Bucks did that and had far more
- 2:25Speaker 1: success backing off. But every season, you know, teams changed,
- 2:28Speaker 1: they evolved, they regress, and in this game, as you
- 2:31Speaker 1: point out, the Bear strategy was to do what against
- 2:34Speaker 1: the Eagles.
- 2:34Speaker 2: The Bears had no issues playing man to man. They
- 2:37Speaker 2: did spy on Hurts, which you almost have to do
- 2:41Speaker 2: if you're going to play a high dose of man,
- 2:43Speaker 2: but they had no problem playing man, and they blitzed
- 2:47Speaker 2: a lot. They rushed five or more on fifteen of Hurts.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I forget how many dropbacks he had. I meant to
- 2:54Speaker 2: put that in my notes, but but and Hurts was
- 2:59Speaker 2: and the fen was terrible versus pressure five for fifteen
- 3:03Speaker 2: for fifty yards with the interception. So they struggled all
- 3:06Speaker 2: game versus the Bears pressure concepts. I mean it was bad.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was thirty four dropbacks. I think
- 3:11Speaker 1: the four run right now, thirty five or thirty six,
- 3:15Speaker 1: but yeah, yeah, they came after him. And then also
- 3:19Speaker 1: you observed.
- 3:20Speaker 2: You had thirty two dropbacks.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Thirty two drop backs. Okay, you also observed that the
- 3:26Speaker 1: Bears defensive structure was mostly subpacked. What we would call
- 3:30Speaker 1: sub package.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, that they played pretty much the entire well,
- 3:36Speaker 2: they didn't play one snap of bass. They played twenty.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Their Their base defense essentially was big nickel with Garner Johnson,
- 3:42Speaker 2: our old friend Garner Johnson the third safety with Bayern
- 3:45Speaker 2: and Brisker. Bemiga and Jackson were the linebackers. Jackson played
- 3:49Speaker 2: every single snap, you know, because he didn't because Aga
- 3:54Speaker 2: did not play in the dime. Jackson did. Johnson was
- 3:58Speaker 2: back at outside corner for the Bears. Right was the
- 4:00Speaker 2: other corner, and Gordon was backing. He's a very good
- 4:03Speaker 2: slot corner.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I imagine this was both strategic but also a
- 4:07Speaker 1: function of not having TJ. Edwards, Tremaine Edmitt. You know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: they were down like their best linebackers, but they felt
- 4:13Speaker 1: that the best way to go against the Eagles was
- 4:16Speaker 1: to put a lot of pressure, created pressure and then
- 4:19Speaker 1: play man in nickel and dime, which is I think really,
- 4:22Speaker 1: I feel like if this were we three, that would
- 4:24Speaker 1: have never worked.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Just right, you could be right, But I mean, as
- 4:29Speaker 2: I was watching the tape, and uh, you know, those
- 4:33Speaker 2: things stand out, you know when you see it for
- 4:35Speaker 2: a couple of plays, you don't you know, you don't say, oh,
- 4:36Speaker 2: this is what they're doing. You have to see enough
- 4:38Speaker 2: of it. But it was evident as I you know,
- 4:41Speaker 2: got in mid to late second quarter, that the Bears
- 4:45Speaker 2: were aggressive with pressure. They were attacking Eagles passing game
- 4:47Speaker 2: with multiple blitz concepts. They featured Jackson as a spy
- 4:51Speaker 2: on third down. You know, as I said, they had
- 4:54Speaker 2: no issue playing man coverage. You know this, they were
- 4:57Speaker 2: an aggressive defense against the Eagles.
- 5:01Speaker 1: All right, Well that is now a change, as it's
- 5:03Speaker 1: okay to be aggressive against Eagles again. The running game
- 5:06Speaker 1: continues to you know, I thought that there were a
- 5:08Speaker 1: couple of runs Greg where Barkley had a little space,
- 5:12Speaker 1: made a little yards. They obviously were moving the ball
- 5:14Speaker 1: a little bit better until the Tush push turnover. There
- 5:18Speaker 1: just just couldn't break one. I know, it's a good
- 5:21Speaker 1: Bears defense, but again, no line, the linebackers, they're all backups.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean, you know, it's it's been odd this year.
- 5:27Speaker 2: They look the run game has not broken one, or
- 5:30Speaker 2: Barkley certainly hasn't, and the pass game hasn't been good
- 5:34Speaker 2: enough to sort of pick up the slack. So it's
- 5:36Speaker 2: been you know, the explosive play element to their offense,
- 5:39Speaker 2: with very few exceptions, does not really exist this year
- 5:43Speaker 2: on any you know, consistent basis.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Right, all right, well, let's uh, let's take a little
- 5:49Speaker 1: bit of a look at what the Bears did defensively. Now,
- 5:51Speaker 1: third down has been a topic of discussion on this
- 5:55Speaker 1: show the market. I mean, if you're following the Eagles,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know they've been very, very bed on third down
- 6:01Speaker 1: and have the most three and now. So this is
- 6:02Speaker 1: the first quarter. I think it's the first third down's
- 6:05Speaker 1: third and five, Greg, and I believe what happens is
- 6:09Speaker 1: there's a stunt inside. Is this the overloaded front front?
- 6:12Speaker 2: So this is the first Is this the first third down?
- 6:14Speaker 2: Third and five?
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yes? It is.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Okay, So this is where the Bears lined up in
- 6:18Speaker 2: there loaded front linebacker Jackson's on the ball opposite the
- 6:22Speaker 2: load they rushed for with a t stunt from the
- 6:26Speaker 2: load side. Sun you know, Hurts saw the stunt. And again,
- 6:30Speaker 2: I'm not gonna sit here and say he shouldn't have moved,
- 6:32Speaker 2: you know, because you don't know what's in his head,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and maybe you know he's he's there feeling it. So
- 6:37Speaker 2: I don't want to say he should or shouldn't have moved,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but he ends up moving. And because you're gonna see
- 6:42Speaker 2: the stunts of t stunt from the load side with
- 6:44Speaker 2: Booker coming, you know Hurts is looking to that side anyway,
- 6:48Speaker 2: so he probably both sees it and feels it.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Right. Who is that breaking to the outside? Uh? Is
- 6:54Speaker 1: that Goddard?
- 6:56Speaker 2: I believe that's Goddard? Is that a viable throw the
- 7:02Speaker 2: position of the defensive player? But you know, I don't know. Again,
- 7:06Speaker 2: I'm not going to sit here and say what the read,
- 7:08Speaker 2: what the reed is. But you know, if he's looking left, Okay,
- 7:12Speaker 2: let's say he's looking left and it's muddied, which you
- 7:15Speaker 2: might see it as such, he's got is that Smith
- 7:20Speaker 2: just basically then sitting over the ball wide open?
- 7:24Speaker 1: If you run it a little FROs the middle, yes, you're.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Gonna make like Again, I don't want to sit here
- 7:31Speaker 2: and not Jalen Hurts because you know, I don't know
- 7:33Speaker 2: what he's feeling. But I think that that throw can
- 7:37Speaker 2: be made. Now again, I've not dropped back and been
- 7:39Speaker 2: in that situation, so someone can say you're crazy, but
- 7:42Speaker 2: I think you know, I think that to me, he
- 7:47Speaker 2: probably left tatterly.
- 7:49Speaker 1: But yeah, and when I froze it. I thought, you know,
- 7:54Speaker 1: right now he's seeing the back of the cornerbacks jersey
- 7:57Speaker 1: while Goddard is breaking open.
- 7:59Speaker 2: So I but again, we don't know if he throws that,
- 8:03Speaker 2: keep going, keep playing this further. See, I don't know
- 8:07Speaker 2: if that's part theoretically of the read. Maybe he's reading
- 8:11Speaker 2: a J. Brown and he was hoping to hit him,
- 8:14Speaker 2: you know, on a bender. But you know, I don't
- 8:18Speaker 2: know that. You know, we don't know how they put
- 8:20Speaker 2: that play together. Maybe Goddard was meant to expand the
- 8:24Speaker 2: defender and not be you know, part of the read.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I don't want to sit here and say for sure
- 8:29Speaker 2: that that ball should have been you know, could have
- 8:31Speaker 2: should have been thrown to Goddard. I don't know. I
- 8:34Speaker 2: do know that when you run a shit route in
- 8:36Speaker 2: front of the quarterback, and every team has that in
- 8:38Speaker 2: their playbook, Jeff As you well know that that's a viable.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Throw, right, And this is the the other angle of it.
- 8:46Speaker 1: He's looking. Yeah, you know, I wondered how much he
- 8:48Speaker 1: felt the presence of that stunt.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, I think he felt it, and
- 8:52Speaker 2: I can't blame him, you know. And then you know,
- 8:54Speaker 2: obviously he runs down, throws it away and it's third down,
- 8:57Speaker 2: so they have to punt.
- 8:58Speaker 1: All right, Now, here's a nice play by the Eagles
- 9:00Speaker 1: offense er. Right, how do you what do you like
- 9:03Speaker 1: about the play design here?
- 9:05Speaker 2: Well, this is their staple play, and I think that
- 9:07Speaker 2: the way the Bears reacted to it, Hurts made a
- 9:10Speaker 2: really good play here, because this is the staple play
- 9:12Speaker 2: of getting the ball in the flat to Goddard. But uh,
- 9:16Speaker 2: if you run it, you know, the Bears probably knew
- 9:19Speaker 2: this because they run in seemingly five times every week.
- 9:23Speaker 2: And you can see who is that? Is that Byed
- 9:26Speaker 2: or is that yes, that's fired the fire He reacts
- 9:30Speaker 2: to Goddard and actually the corner and I think that's Johnson, right.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry, that's Johnson.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no, but Byard is the one who reacted to
- 9:38Speaker 2: Goddard to you know initially, well, yeah, Johnson corner in
- 9:43Speaker 2: the backfield. So therefore Smith was able to get on
- 9:45Speaker 2: top of him. And yep, and I think that, you
- 9:50Speaker 2: know it, Hurts does a really nice job here.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And that's the first thing I thought, is that they
- 9:54Speaker 1: run this play to Goddard so much. I almost don't
- 9:56Speaker 1: blame Johnson. For thinking that that ball was definitely going
- 10:00Speaker 1: to him.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Now, I wonder, quite frankly, if this was a counter
- 10:05Speaker 2: off their staple, because look at look at what Smith did.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Smith clearly showed as if he might block, and then
- 10:13Speaker 2: he ran around as if he could be getting the ball.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So it's possible they ran this as a counter off
- 10:18Speaker 2: their staple.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I would probably be thinking the way he almost got
- 10:23Speaker 1: himself into a pseudo blocking position and then.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Turned then immediately look back as if there was a
- 10:28Speaker 2: very good chance I'm getting the ball, So this could
- 10:30Speaker 2: well be a counter off their staple.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Hey, what do you know the Eagles offensive coaching staff,
- 10:35Speaker 1: for all the you know, for all the criticism, to
- 10:38Speaker 1: get worked off of a play that they've used before
- 10:41Speaker 1: and extended it.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was a really good play.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher. And if you have a family

- 13:25Speaker 1: we're gonna diagnose this one because I gotta thank you
- 13:29Speaker 1: for almost being like a mentor to me now, because
- 13:32Speaker 1: as soon as I watched it and saw what the
- 13:35Speaker 1: Bears are doing, I knew that there was no way
- 13:37Speaker 1: Dallas Goddard could get this ball, even though he was
- 13:40Speaker 1: wide open.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Yeah the replay, Yeah right, people, and I'm being honest.
- 13:45Speaker 2: For people who don't know ball, you know they're gonna
- 13:47Speaker 2: get on them. Goddard's irrelevant on this play because first
- 13:51Speaker 2: of all, they're playing four across, they're playing with a
- 13:53Speaker 2: quarter's look, and actually they're kind of right now. You
- 13:57Speaker 2: think they could have a problem because the Eagles are
- 13:59Speaker 2: an empty so they five receivers and they only have
- 14:01Speaker 2: four across, so there's gonna be a problem here, and
- 14:04Speaker 2: they're all off, so there's no press element here. So
- 14:08Speaker 2: right now, with basically they have one, two, three, four, five,
- 14:14Speaker 2: and then you could even look at the two outside
- 14:17Speaker 2: guys as potential rushers, so you could think, right now,
- 14:20Speaker 2: there's seven potential rushers because of the way they're playing,
- 14:24Speaker 2: and you don't know how many are coming, which ones
- 14:27Speaker 2: are coming. So right now, as a quarterback, the first
- 14:29Speaker 2: thing you're thinking is there could be a rusher. That's
- 14:34Speaker 2: that's a free hitter. So I'm gonna have to get
- 14:36Speaker 2: the ball. I'm gonna have to pick a side, and
- 14:38Speaker 2: I'm gonna have to make a throw. This is not
- 14:40Speaker 2: a let's drop back and read the coverage kind of play, right, so.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Three step dropping it's got to be out to the game.
- 14:46Speaker 2: By the way, the side he picks has a natural
- 14:49Speaker 2: pick element to it, so he actually picked the right side. Yep,
- 14:52Speaker 2: the left side being the right side.
- 14:55Speaker 1: The left side is the correct side. The only thing
- 14:57Speaker 1: that's wrong is throw.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Yeah, but Goddard is not relevant on this play, not
- 15:03Speaker 2: at all. And it's it's and you know when you
- 15:06Speaker 2: see this, you you know you immediately think. But you
- 15:08Speaker 2: know he's thinking, I got to get rid of the ball.
- 15:11Speaker 2: You know there's gonna be pressure. I you know, this
- 15:13Speaker 2: is not like, let's scan the defense. I don't even think.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I've seen it suggested like peripheral vision. He could maybe
- 15:20Speaker 1: notice the coverage bust, but I don't know how you're
- 15:23Speaker 1: supposed to you immediately.
- 15:26Speaker 2: It's a risk that's total bs. You know, when you
- 15:30Speaker 2: get pressure like this and it's a quick, three step
- 15:33Speaker 2: timing drop and you know you've got a stack on
- 15:35Speaker 2: the other side with a natural pick element, that's where
- 15:38Speaker 2: the ball's going. He just he threw it behind him
- 15:41Speaker 2: because if he throws it where it should be, could
- 15:44Speaker 2: it be a touchdown? Maybe it's certainly a first down
- 15:48Speaker 2: and Smith probably gets to the ten at the least.
- 15:51Speaker 2: But it's just a bad throw. I mean, but there's
- 15:54Speaker 2: there's nothing wrong with the read at all. Goddard is
- 15:57Speaker 2: not relevant here, correct.
- 16:00Speaker 1: That was a big point of contention for the last
- 16:02Speaker 1: few days for a lot of people and a lot
- 16:04Speaker 1: of people on social media who are think they're experts
- 16:07Speaker 1: and think that there's some way you could see God
- 16:09Speaker 1: it there. It's would have been magical if he had
- 16:12Speaker 1: seen that.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You know. It reminded me of the play against the
- 16:15Speaker 2: Giants the first time they played on the Thursday night
- 16:17Speaker 2: game when Cordell Flott made the interception versus zero coverage
- 16:21Speaker 2: and everybody was like, well, he should have thrown to
- 16:23Speaker 2: A J. Brown And AJ Brown was running a route
- 16:26Speaker 2: that took like three seconds for set you know, to
- 16:28Speaker 2: get to and it was zero coverage and you can't
- 16:31Speaker 2: wait for him to get He wasn't even he hadn't
- 16:34Speaker 2: even begun to look at Jalen Hurts on that play
- 16:36Speaker 2: when Jalen had to throw the ball right. So, I mean,
- 16:39Speaker 2: you know, it's always easy after the fact to say, guys, open,
- 16:43Speaker 2: that's easy through that.
- 16:45Speaker 1: All right. Now we've got a third and nine, I
- 16:47Speaker 1: think on the opening drive of the third quarter. Yeah,
- 16:50Speaker 1: first drive of the third quarter. It's gonna go to
- 16:53Speaker 1: god Ar incomplete. What did the Bears do here to
- 16:57Speaker 1: cause some disruption? So?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Wait, this was the this was the first third and
- 17:02Speaker 2: nine third quarter? Okay, yeah, yeah, so this was uh,
- 17:07Speaker 2: this time they went zero with both Gordon from the
- 17:09Speaker 2: boundary and Gardner Johnson from the field blitzing. Gardner Johnson
- 17:13Speaker 2: was a free hitter here, so what happened is he
- 17:16Speaker 2: forced a hurry.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Through yep, and there you see everybody coming right.
- 17:20Speaker 2: You know. Again, it's a very similar look to the
- 17:23Speaker 2: play we just looked at where they had four across.
- 17:27Speaker 1: So if it's a zero, should hurt see the same philosophy,
- 17:32Speaker 1: you got three step and get rid of it.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And well he's got Brown looking right now, Brown, what I'm.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Wondering, Like, well, I was surprised the ball wasn't right
- 17:39Speaker 1: to Brown over the middle here.
- 17:40Speaker 2: That's where should have gone. This place should have gone
- 17:44Speaker 2: to because Brown recognized it and immediately looked at at Jalen. See,
- 17:49Speaker 2: this is a time where Brown looked right away. You
- 17:51Speaker 2: can see that look he's looking keep going right there,
- 17:55Speaker 2: he's looking. Now, he's looking.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Now, he's looking.
- 17:58Speaker 2: He's waiting and where.
- 18:00Speaker 1: That's there's time. The foot is planted. He can he
- 18:02Speaker 1: can do it. I know he's backing up a little bit,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but he's made the throw before. He didn't even go
- 18:08Speaker 1: to He didn't even the fact that he didn't go
- 18:09Speaker 1: to a j any he tried to make a tougher throw.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Right that balls should have gone to Brown. Yeah, but
- 18:15Speaker 2: I mean this is symptomatic and representative, Jeff of what
- 18:17Speaker 2: we started this whole defensive segment with that. The Bears
- 18:20Speaker 2: had no problem with pressure. I mean they were coming, they.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Were It's like they really they felt if they sped
- 18:26Speaker 1: up his clock, he would make bad decisions.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Yep.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And then this this time he did, I swear, Greg
- 18:31Speaker 1: this is what is so enigmatic about analyzing hurts because
- 18:35Speaker 1: there are other teams that have felt the same way,
- 18:37Speaker 1: and he has burned them by hitting it bing bang
- 18:40Speaker 1: boom where he's supposed to be because he used to
- 18:42Speaker 1: be great against the Blitz.
- 18:43Speaker 2: But well, there's no question, there's no question that. You
- 18:46Speaker 2: know again, I can't speak to jay en Hurtz confidence.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I never watched press conferences because the game was Friday.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I chose to watch his after the game, and by
- 18:54Speaker 2: the way I thought he handled himself beautifully. He took responsibility.
- 18:58Speaker 2: For you do watch the press conferences.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I saw. I didn't see it live, but I saw
- 19:02Speaker 1: snippets of it.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I watched. I watched him speak for whatever, you know,
- 19:05Speaker 2: the twelve minutes he spoke, I thought he was phenomenal.
- 19:08Speaker 2: I mean, you know, he took responsibility. He didn't put
- 19:11Speaker 2: it on anybody else. He didn't act like you know.
- 19:14Speaker 2: It was it was I, I gotta do this, I
- 19:16Speaker 2: gotta be better. I got you know, And which is
- 19:18Speaker 2: always the way. I learned that from Troy Aikman. When
- 19:20Speaker 2: the team wins, it's we. When the team loses, it's
- 19:23Speaker 2: I gotta play better. That if you're a quarterback, that
- 19:25Speaker 2: has to be the way it is right, and I
- 19:27Speaker 2: thought he handled himself absolutely beautifully.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Yeah. So here's a third and six. I think it's
- 19:33Speaker 1: sort of the similar where there's a crosser. This is
- 19:37Speaker 1: something that we have talked about with Jollen in the past,
- 19:39Speaker 1: is that sometimes he hits it, but then he hits
- 19:41Speaker 1: it too late. It's supposed to be between the numbers,
- 19:44Speaker 1: not outside the number.
- 19:45Speaker 2: Which way is this now? Are we in the third quarter?
- 19:47Speaker 1: Third and six, fourth quarter?
- 19:50Speaker 2: Third and six, fourth quarter?
- 19:52Speaker 1: Yep?
- 19:53Speaker 2: I believe it's the Oh so this is this the
- 19:55Speaker 2: one where he broke down in the pocket with no pressure,
- 19:58Speaker 2: not getting the ball to open brown with it, timing
- 20:00Speaker 2: and structure, Yeah, got them late, yes, yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Yes, so I think it was there was no pressure
- 20:07Speaker 1: on this, right, they looked the show pressure.
- 20:09Speaker 2: There's no pressure.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Here, right, they dropped. It was only a four man
- 20:13Speaker 1: rush right there.
- 20:14Speaker 2: You got to hit him now, yep, or you got
- 20:18Speaker 2: to hit him now. So he moves for no reason, right,
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know this this play he moved for no reason. Yeah, yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 2: for whatever reason. Then he hits him late.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 20:30Speaker 2: And by the way, if he stayed in the pocket,
- 20:33Speaker 2: who knows, he might have had the inbreaker behind all
- 20:36Speaker 2: this too. To uh that be if you go back
- 20:41Speaker 2: to the sideline, you'll see.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yeah. But just to give people even who are watching.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I mean there's no pressure. This is not pressure.
- 20:47Speaker 1: No. And then Brown's right there, I mean, bam, right
- 20:50Speaker 1: there between the numbers.
- 20:51Speaker 2: It's person you can hit Brown or if you stay
- 20:53Speaker 2: in the pocket, chef, if you go back to the.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Sideline, yep, I'll do it.
- 20:58Speaker 2: He mightn't be in a position to hit the breaker
- 21:00Speaker 2: from number one to the field. Look keep going mmm
- 21:08Speaker 2: oh wow, yeah, because this is a very common you
- 21:12Speaker 2: know what, there's a very common route concept. You know
- 21:14Speaker 2: what this is. It's it's mesh with double dig behind it.
- 21:18Speaker 2: It's everybody, the Patriots run this all the time. It's
- 21:22Speaker 2: mesh with with double dig behind it. That's what this
- 21:24Speaker 2: play is. Yep.
- 21:25Speaker 1: There it is both mesh with double dig and that's Dotson.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Dotson is the number one, and he's right.
- 21:31Speaker 2: You may, you may because because the mesh gives you
- 21:34Speaker 2: a high low element. So if you have time in
- 21:36Speaker 2: the pocket, look at that underneath the fender leaning up
- 21:40Speaker 2: to react to Brown, and then you get the dig
- 21:42Speaker 2: right behind it. It's the right double dig you know, mesh. Yep.
- 21:47Speaker 2: But and you can see clearly from this saying, oh,
- 21:49Speaker 2: there's no reason to break down.
- 21:51Speaker 1: No, no, that was good, all right, the two point conversion.
- 21:55Speaker 1: I thought he had an opportunity here. Greg agree.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to remember this one.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It's kind of a right side rub. I mean it
- 22:02Speaker 1: looks like brown.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Oh, yes, he had Brown here thrown to Brown. Yeah.
- 22:07Speaker 2: This is a classic play in the in the low
- 22:09Speaker 2: red zone again, another play that's in everybody's playbook. You
- 22:12Speaker 2: get the natural pick element. You know they're going to
- 22:14Speaker 2: be playing man. No one's playing zone here from the
- 22:16Speaker 2: two yard line, so you got to throw this ball
- 22:19Speaker 2: aj Brown.
- 22:19Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, you got that pick.
- 22:21Speaker 2: That's the play. I mean it's wide open. Yep, that's
- 22:25Speaker 2: the play.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Yeah, because Dotson is picking the outside defender, got it
- 22:28Speaker 1: is carrying the Yeah, I guess yeah, that's right there.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, that that's the play. You're now, I
- 22:34Speaker 2: remember it as soon as you said it. Yeah, you
- 22:36Speaker 2: got you gotta make that throat.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Yeah. And by the way, would there be a show
- 22:40Speaker 1: let's say, so he doesn't make it. I'm wondering did
- 22:42Speaker 1: he have godard ability to just fire it into got it?

- 25:02Speaker 2: You know, you'd have to You'd have to be doing
- 25:03Speaker 2: that right away. You can't do that late, right, Yeah.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Okay, I mean that that is a play where you're
- 25:09Speaker 1: supposed to get rid of the ball quickly anyway.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I just thought, but you have to go
- 25:13Speaker 2: to god or like right away. You can't look to
- 25:16Speaker 2: Brown then come back to Goddard. Okay, then it's too late.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Got it all right? But that was a missed opportunity obviously.
- 25:23Speaker 1: That changed the dynamics of the game and caused a
- 25:26Speaker 1: huge argument for everybody should have gone for itou have not.
- 25:29Speaker 2: H was funny, just just as a thought, and people
- 25:32Speaker 2: can disagree. And I'm not saying I'm right or wrong.
- 25:34Speaker 2: It's just tough stuff I think about. I'm sure you
- 25:36Speaker 2: think about and fans think about. The game has changed
- 25:39Speaker 2: to where going forward and forth down and everything seems
- 25:42Speaker 2: to be kind of what is normal now. But I
- 25:45Speaker 2: remember having a guy had a chance years ago to
- 25:49Speaker 2: go down when Bill Parcells was the GM with the Dolphins,
- 25:52Speaker 2: and I had a chance to go down and spend
- 25:54Speaker 2: like three hours with him and just talk Paul and
- 25:57Speaker 2: you know, he said something, and I've heard him say
- 25:59Speaker 2: it many times, you know, when he was involved. Obviously
- 26:02Speaker 2: you don't hear a lot of quotes from Bill Parcells
- 26:04Speaker 2: now you know he's not involved, but he always said
- 26:06Speaker 2: that his philosophy was you want to keep your team
- 26:09Speaker 2: in the game as long as possible, and that stuck
- 26:13Speaker 2: with me. Now again, people can just I'm not saying
- 26:15Speaker 2: I'm right or wrong. This is a Hall of Fame
- 26:17Speaker 2: coach who did pretty well in the league. And I
- 26:20Speaker 2: know the games, you know, changed and people see, you know,
- 26:23Speaker 2: have a different worldview of the game. But you know,
- 26:26Speaker 2: when I was watching the Lions game on Thanksgiving and
- 26:30Speaker 2: you know it was they scored or no, no, they
- 26:33Speaker 2: were down ten thirty one to twenty one with about
- 26:35Speaker 2: ten minutes to go. I don't know if you got
- 26:36Speaker 2: a chance to see that game.
- 26:38Speaker 1: I did. I did see the da It.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Was fourth down and they were fourth and three and
- 26:42Speaker 2: they were clearly in field goal range and they went
- 26:44Speaker 2: for it and that's the play where it got through
- 26:46Speaker 2: just a little bit behind Jamison Williams and it was
- 26:48Speaker 2: incomplete on fourth and three. You know, obviously not a
- 26:52Speaker 2: great throw. If it was a great throw, they get
- 26:53Speaker 2: the first down, but they didn't get it, and so
- 26:55Speaker 2: now they're down ten, which to me changes everything about
- 27:00Speaker 2: the Packers' offense when they get the ball. So you know,
- 27:04Speaker 2: to me, again, I'm not saying I'm right or wrong.
- 27:07Speaker 2: I'm just saying, there's ten minutes to go, there's not
- 27:09Speaker 2: three minutes to go. You kick the field goal, you
- 27:12Speaker 2: make it a one score game. Now the Packers offense
- 27:15Speaker 2: has a whole different approach to how they have to play.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I agree with that. I think that I respect both
- 27:22Speaker 1: the analytics argument and the non analytics argument, but I
- 27:25Speaker 1: do one side. The analytics side doesn't take into account
- 27:30Speaker 1: how the opponent might react to being down one score
- 27:33Speaker 1: instead of two, and what that means about their how
- 27:36Speaker 1: tense they get, how they might make a mistake, how
- 27:39Speaker 1: they might feel a lead slipping away. I think all
- 27:41Speaker 1: that stuff it's fair to bring up in the argument
- 27:46Speaker 1: for just taking the point there.
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and there's no I'm not saying I'm right. There's
- 27:51Speaker 2: probably no right or wrong. Well, of course, the analytics people,
- 27:54Speaker 2: because they view it as a mathematical equation to see
- 27:57Speaker 2: it as being a right and a wrong, And that's fine,
- 28:00Speaker 2: you know, I'm not I'm not debating then that's not
- 28:02Speaker 2: the point of what I'm saying. But the game has
- 28:05Speaker 2: clearly changed where you know all this stuff, you know,
- 28:07Speaker 2: you go for it all the time on fourth down,
- 28:09Speaker 2: you got to go for two point conversions, you know
- 28:10Speaker 2: what I mean, you know, but it just there is
- 28:14Speaker 2: a human element to the game as well.
- 28:16Speaker 1: And I agreed, it's unfortunately we don't know when it plays.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And because I do think the analytics part has helped
- 28:21Speaker 1: the game. I think teams go for on fourth down
- 28:25Speaker 1: a lot of times now when they wouldn't have in
- 28:27Speaker 1: the past, and it benefits them and they should have
- 28:29Speaker 1: gone for fourth down because you put so much faith
- 28:32Speaker 1: and no question the team and that motivates them. So
- 28:34Speaker 1: that's why I hate when people are so split, because
- 28:37Speaker 1: I believe that there are merits to both and downsides
- 28:39Speaker 1: to both. Right, there's no.
- 28:42Speaker 2: I still kind of feel deep down that the Bill
- 28:45Speaker 2: Parcells philosophy, you know, does ring true. You know, you
- 28:50Speaker 2: want to keep your team in it as long as
- 28:53Speaker 2: you possibly can, yes, and yeah, yeah, to win.
- 28:57Speaker 1: The great irony of that is that Dan Campbell is
- 28:59Speaker 1: a Bill Parcell's coaching disciples, So right, right, right, right,
- 29:05Speaker 1: all right, great, Greg, really appreciate you breaking down the tape.
- 29:08Speaker 1: We will do it again next week. It'll be Chargers
- 29:11Speaker 1: tape and boy is at a big game the philadel
- 29:14Speaker 1: a potentially seasoned, declining game.
- 29:17Speaker 2: It's a big game for the Chargers too, by the way.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Both agreed, Yeah, very much. All right, great stuff. So
- 29:22Speaker 1: for Greg Cosell, I'm Jeff Mosher. You've been watching Inside
- 29:26Speaker 1: the Tape with Greg Cosell on Inside the Birds
