- 0:00Speaker 1: Guess who?
- 0:02Speaker 2: It's 10 o'clock. Do you care where your parents are?
- 0:04Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:06Speaker 3: Picture Association of America.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Let's be the weirdos, though.
- 0:11Speaker 4: Except that guy.
- 0:12Speaker 5: Fuck that guy.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Fuck that guy.
- 0:14Speaker 6: As long as we all get on board with something.
- 0:18Speaker 2: And on that note, that's where we usually begin.
- 0:20Speaker 7: Fuck that guy.
- 0:21Speaker 3: And end, actually.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Fuck that guy. Thanks for listening.
- 0:25Speaker 5: I have so much to say on this topic.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Fuck That Guy or music?
- 0:29Speaker 5: Fuck That Guy.
- 0:30Speaker 4: Okay, now that one I think we can all get
- 0:32Speaker 4: on board with.
- 0:34Speaker 5: Let's just do the Fuck That Guy podcast.
- 0:36Speaker 4: So it will be laced with profanity even more than usual.
- 0:40Speaker 5: If you're not comfortable with.
- 0:41Speaker 4: This level of profanity, perhaps this isn't the episode for you.
- 0:44Speaker 4: With that having been said, on with the show.
- 0:53Speaker 3: Emergency alert. Defense Corps forces reported just moments ago.
- 0:59Speaker 5: This is not a drill. Repeat, this is not the drill.
- 1:02Speaker 3: At this time, we are requesting the immediate and orderly evacuation.
- 1:07Speaker 8: Of the vicinity.
- 1:09Speaker 2: The Coast Guard and the Navy have been alerted and
- 1:11Speaker 2: are standing by on the eastern sea.
- 1:14Speaker 4: And it continues to burn out of control.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It has been regular. Every five to ten minutes, there
- 1:19Speaker 2: has been another convoy of units, fire companies, paramedics... A
- 1:23Speaker 2: citywide emergency has been declared.
- 1:25Speaker 5: Police officers are still on tactical full alert. 2,000 National
- 1:30Speaker 5: Guardsmen are standing by. Air defense warning read.
- 1:34Speaker 3: We're doomed!
- 1:37Speaker 9: It's time for Movie Meltdown's Attack of the Killers soundtrack.
- 1:41Speaker 2: The live transmission has begun, and we're into the final
- 1:45Speaker 2: hour of hell.
- 1:46Speaker 3: MUSIC PLAYS.
- 2:05Speaker 4: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown's Attack of the
- 2:07Speaker 4: Killers soundtrack. I'm Brian.
- 2:09Speaker 2: That's Lucy.
- 2:10Speaker 6: And that's Fred.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Those are our.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Regular two weirdos, which you're, I'm assuming, familiar with at
- 2:15Speaker 1: this point. Also joining this week, we have Michael.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Say hello.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Michael left, and this is Fred 2, Return of Fred,
- 2:24Speaker 5: Fred's Revenge, sitting in his place.
- 2:27Speaker 4: We don't need more Fred. We have a lot of
- 2:28Speaker 4: Fred as it is.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Michael gets up to go pee a lot, so somebody
- 2:33Speaker 5: had to take his spot while he was peeing.
- 2:35Speaker 6: It's fine.
- 2:35Speaker 5: It's fine, everybody.
- 2:37Speaker 1: This is your first time joining us on either of
- 2:41Speaker 1: these weird spinoff shows, so do you want to tell
- 2:45Speaker 1: people about all the fun podcasting you've done in the past?
- 2:49Speaker 5: Not really, because I'll probably start bitching.
- 2:53Speaker 4: We already did that.
- 2:54Speaker 1: That's how I inspired him to join us tonight. I
- 2:57Speaker 1: went on a rant for about two hours last night.
- 3:00Speaker 5: It's true.
- 3:01Speaker 1: About podcasting and the difficulties of the world we live
- 3:05Speaker 1: in where podcasting exists.
- 3:07Speaker 4: And he was like, you know what? You sold me
- 3:09Speaker 4: on it.
- 3:09Speaker 6: Yep. Wait, did you get poached? Were you poached from
- 3:12Speaker 6: another podcast? Is that what's happening here?
- 3:14Speaker 2: No.
- 3:14Speaker 4: You're on hiatus. Isn't that what I decided?
- 3:17Speaker 5: I'm what they call, what roller coaster enthusiasts call SBNO,
- 3:21Speaker 5: which means standing but not operating. The podcast is still
- 3:24Speaker 5: on the website, but I do not do it anymore.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So people are waiting in line with their tickets in hand,
- 3:29Speaker 1: just waiting for you to just start clicking up the hill.
- 3:31Speaker 4: That's what you're saying.
- 3:32Speaker 5: They say next year, 2016, might be the year in
- 3:35Speaker 5: Louisville here for Twisted Sisters or Twisted Twins to come back.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Also the UA to podcast. Maybe both of those things
- 3:42Speaker 5: will be running trains again. That sounded really weird when
- 3:44Speaker 5: I said it.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Okay.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it did.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So.
- 3:47Speaker 4: You are very schooled in the ways of podcasting. Just
- 3:49Speaker 4: new to this show.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Just new to this show.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I think I'm new to the Killer soundtrack.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Have I done that before?
- 3:55Speaker 4: You've been on there before.
- 3:56Speaker 8: Have I?
- 3:56Speaker 4: You've both been on there before. And everybody always forgets.
- 3:58Speaker 6: I have. It didn't go well.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Well, see, what's funny is that time that you said
- 4:02Speaker 1: you'd never been on there before, you'd been on there before.
- 4:04Speaker 8: I had?
- 4:05Speaker 4: What was... You were both on the Christmas episode year
- 4:08Speaker 4: before last.
- 4:09Speaker 6: What did we talk about?
- 4:10Speaker 4: Christmas.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 6: I remember.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Like you do.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Five pound bag of money that you complain because it
- 4:16Speaker 1: wasn't on a soundtrack.
- 4:17Speaker 4: And then it was on a soundtrack. I found it.
- 4:20Speaker 6: What soundtrack was it on?
- 4:21Speaker 4: You're a huge fan of Madea.
- 4:23Speaker 6: So luckily, it.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Happened to be on your favorite movie, Madea's Big Christmas
- 4:29Speaker 1: Hijinx or whatever it was called.
- 4:30Speaker 4: You go deep.
- 4:31Speaker 6: I like it.
- 4:32Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I remember that now.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I remember talking about Christmas songs, but I wasn't aware.
- 4:37Speaker 2: of where I was being filed at the time.
- 4:39Speaker 6: I wasn't either.
- 4:40Speaker 4: You're both very unaware.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Wait, there's a Christmas song called Five Pound Bag of Money?
- 4:45Speaker 6: There is a song, yes.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Okay, go on.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Please continue.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Is this where we play it? I can't sing it.
- 4:52Speaker 6: I'm not going to break into it.
- 4:53Speaker 4: It's out of the holiday season. You're just going to
- 4:54Speaker 4: have to reference it now.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I've never heard of this song before.
- 4:57Speaker 6: Google it. It'll be worthwhile.
- 4:59Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:00Speaker 6: It'll be worth your time.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It is an entertaining song in general, even funnier that
- 5:04Speaker 1: it's a Christmas song.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Yeah, it's Pearl Bailey. It's unbelievably good.
- 5:08Speaker 5: All right.
- 5:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:09Speaker 6: And it gets right at the heart of what Christmas
- 5:11Speaker 6: is about, as you can imagine.
- 5:13Speaker 5: It's right there in the title.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 5: You don't even need to tweet about that. It's right there.
- 5:16Speaker 5: It says it all.
- 5:17Speaker 4: We'll still tweet.
- 5:18Speaker 5: We'll still tweet about it. Hate tweets. Fuck those guys.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 5:23Speaker 4: That's our theme for the episode. Fuck those guys. Wait, wait, wait.
- 5:26Speaker 5: Before we get started, can I say the name of
- 5:28Speaker 5: the podcast that I don't do anymore? Because I don't
- 5:30Speaker 5: think I said it at all.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Feel free to plug the thing that you don't do.
- 5:32Speaker 5: It is called the You Ate It Podcast. Y-O-U-E-I-G-H-T-I-T. You
- 5:37Speaker 5: can find that at www.youateit.com or on iTunes or any
- 5:43Speaker 5: place else where podcasts are. I guess they're all still
- 5:46Speaker 5: there because I haven't checked in like six months.
- 5:49Speaker 1: See, long-time listeners will recognize that because I used to
- 5:52Speaker 1: play promos.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Before you were like, oh, by the way, I'm not
- 5:55Speaker 1: doing that anymore. I was like, oh, I guess there's
- 5:57Speaker 1: no point in me playing these promos.
- 5:58Speaker 5: My most famous guest was you.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Really? Yeah. I'm not buying that.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I had an actual celebrity or two
- 6:04Speaker 5: on once or twice, but for the purpose of this conversation,
- 6:09Speaker 5: it was definitely you.
- 6:10Speaker 4: For the purpose of this made-up conversation, I'll go along
- 6:13Speaker 4: with that.
- 6:13Speaker 5: Kayfabe, baby. Good job.
- 6:16Speaker 4: We did build a fort, by the way.
- 6:18Speaker 5: We built a blanket fort when he was on the show.
- 6:19Speaker 6: Oh, my gosh.
- 6:20Speaker 5: We sat in the blanket fort and talked about Garbage
- 6:22Speaker 5: Pail Kids.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Somewhere along the way, I'm sure we did.
- 6:25Speaker 6: How do you incorporate that visual element into a podcast?
- 6:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I kind of questioned that at the time.
- 6:30Speaker 5: I took a picture of it after I built the fort,
- 6:33Speaker 5: and then we just climbed into the fort with the microphones,
- 6:35Speaker 5: and we just kind of sat there.
- 6:37Speaker 2: I think you can hear the atmosphere.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Definitely.
- 6:40Speaker 5: The ambiance of a blanket fort is like none other.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Fair enough. You can hear that they're sitting in a
- 6:45Speaker 2: blanket fort.
- 6:46Speaker 1: That's what I thought was awesome, because it is an
- 6:48Speaker 1: audio format.
- 6:49Speaker 4: We could have made it up. But we didn't.
- 6:52Speaker 1: We broke down your entire living room, moved furniture, built
- 6:55Speaker 1: a blanket for it, got inside, and did an entire
- 6:58Speaker 1: segment or two, I think, of just talking about randomness.
- 7:02Speaker 5: Yeah, mostly toys and trading cards, if I remember correctly.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Except for when I talk about music, which I guess
- 7:11Speaker 1: we will do today.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Are we ready to get into it?
- 7:17Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 4: You guys are excited.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Well, no, I feel like, I don't know if I've
- 7:22Speaker 2: mentioned this before on any of the shows, but I
- 7:25Speaker 2: kind of feel I should preface anything I say with
- 7:30Speaker 2: just you have to understand that I'm full of a
- 7:32Speaker 2: vast darkness.
- 7:34Speaker 5: Yes. Again, long-time listeners will understand.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And so, I mean, I just, I want people to
- 7:41Speaker 2: understand that before I say anything about anyone ever.
- 7:45Speaker 5: We're going to need you to be that darkness today.
- 7:49Speaker 4: But Lucy is full of light and joy.
- 7:51Speaker 5: See, that's why they're here like this. Ping pong.
- 7:55Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. It's a good balance. It's a
- 7:58Speaker 4: good balance.
- 7:59Speaker 6: Just don't get me started on Reese Witherspoon.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you're rooting for Reese and Wilde.
- 8:04Speaker 5: I'm learning so much here. What is your problem with
- 8:07Speaker 5: Reese Witherspoon?
- 8:08Speaker 6: We should have told each other before we started recording.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Here comes the venom.
- 8:13Speaker 6: No, we don't want to go there. You don't want
- 8:14Speaker 6: to see it come out.
- 8:16Speaker 5: I'll ask you after class.
- 8:17Speaker 6: It's fine.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Claws retract. So that was the purpose for putting this together.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I had been thinking about different types of episodes to
- 8:26Speaker 1: do and specifically different type of music episodes along the way.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And I thought about this recently because I was like,
- 8:33Speaker 1: it's cool. I've noticed in the last few years when
- 8:36Speaker 1: We have one here, a movie theater that will play
- 8:39Speaker 1: the entire run of all the short films that are
- 8:41Speaker 1: nominated for the Oscars or the entire short animation feature.
- 8:46Speaker 4: That's happening right now. Do what?
- 8:48Speaker 6: At the Village 8.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I know.
- 8:49Speaker 6: I was just there.
- 8:50Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 8:50Speaker 5: What did you see?
- 8:52Speaker 6: I went to see Two Days, One Night.
- 8:55Speaker 4: That's no Big Hero 6, but whatever.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Yeah, that's what we saw.
- 8:58Speaker 4: It was pretty awesome, by the way. Also nominated for
- 9:01Speaker 4: Best Animated Feature.
- 9:03Speaker 5: Also available on my Roku box, which I had no
- 9:05Speaker 5: idea about until I saw the ad for it today.
- 9:07Speaker 5: I was like, I could have watched this at home.
- 9:09Speaker 4: You needed to get out of the house, damn it.
- 9:11Speaker 10: I know.
- 9:11Speaker 5: My agoraphobia surprises me even.
- 9:14Speaker 4: How could you hear me bitching if you didn't come
- 9:16Speaker 4: out of your house?
- 9:17Speaker 5: That's an excellent point. I'll take that.
- 9:20Speaker 1: But, yeah, I was like, after that, I was like, well,
- 9:23Speaker 1: obviously we can't show movies on the show. But since
- 9:26Speaker 1: we do a music podcast now, we could actually set
- 9:29Speaker 1: it up. play all the songs that are nominated for
- 9:32Speaker 1: song and score, and then it's actually a functional episode.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Because you know there's been many a year you're sitting
- 9:37Speaker 1: there going, I heard one of these five songs.
- 9:40Speaker 4: So it's like, this.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Would give people an excuse to be like, oh, I've
- 9:43Speaker 1: heard all of the songs that are nominated. And you
- 9:45Speaker 1: can make up your own mind and argue with the
- 9:48Speaker 1: Oscars like we all do.
- 9:49Speaker 5: I had a very similar revelation to what you just
- 9:51Speaker 5: said this morning because I listened to all these songs
- 9:53Speaker 5: and I realized I've seen one of these movies, which
- 9:55Speaker 5: is more than I can say for most Oscar years.
- 9:57Speaker 4: That's true.
- 9:58Speaker 5: One movie I've seen.
- 9:59Speaker 4: Oh, really? making progress. Getting out of the house, watching
- 10:03Speaker 4: one movie. Seeing one movie.
- 10:04Speaker 5: But I saw that in my house. It was a
- 10:06Speaker 5: Redbox situation.
- 10:07Speaker 4: All right. Well, we don't approve of that, but we'll
- 10:09Speaker 4: let it slide.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Okay. Since you've seen one movie now, you're making progress.
- 10:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:13Speaker 4: All right. Do you want me to get into it?
- 10:15Speaker 4: First up, we're going to start with score. Score. And
- 10:18Speaker 4: I wanted to go with one that was kind of interesting.
- 10:21Speaker 1: So this would be the Grand Budapest Hotel, Alexander Desla.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And the track, I was trying to pick something that
- 10:32Speaker 1: at least tied in or had a nice... With any
- 10:34Speaker 1: of the score, I'm just sort of going to pick
- 10:35Speaker 1: one along the way that either is sort of main
- 10:38Speaker 1: theme-like or just encompasses the best of what it's trying
- 10:42Speaker 1: to do. So this one just had a hotel tie-in anyway.
- 10:46Speaker 1: It's the new Lobby Boy.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 10:49Speaker 9: Thank you.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I can sense the newness and the inexperience of
- 13:03Speaker 2: the lobby boy.
- 13:07Speaker 8: Alrighty.
- 13:08Speaker 4: So, any other thoughts on... We'll start with that song.
- 13:11Speaker 2: On the scores, it's... probably my favorite Sklar.
- 13:16Speaker 5: I agree.
- 13:17Speaker 1: That's kind of why I wanted to kick it off
- 13:19Speaker 1: with this one and get something kind of interesting right
- 13:21Speaker 1: off the bat to sort.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Of ease us in because some of the other ones
- 13:25Speaker 4: are more familiar.
- 13:26Speaker 2: It has that kind of miniature toy quality that his
- 13:30Speaker 2: films have and it seems like really right but it
- 13:34Speaker 2: doesn't seem like it was just developed to be right
- 13:39Speaker 2: for it and it has something extra about it. there's
- 13:43Speaker 2: just like a little extra exuberance and uh he did
- 13:46Speaker 2: write the score but i think he also used some.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Like russian pulp yeah and i think that's like moonshine
- 13:53Speaker 1: like this extra life.
- 13:56Speaker 4: These traditional arrangements which.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I was looking at that and i'm like what is
- 13:59Speaker 1: the weird rules because oscars have so many freaking rules
- 14:03Speaker 1: about this stuff that they will always disqualify people because
- 14:07Speaker 1: i think that's why because i actually really just songs
- 14:11Speaker 1: no because i know um Years ago, when the big
- 14:15Speaker 1: deal the year that Dark Knight didn't get nominated for
- 14:17Speaker 1: so many things, one of them was Hans Zimmer.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Did not get nominated for Best.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Score because he also worked with all these other writers.
- 14:27Speaker 1: So if it was more than a certain number of writers,
- 14:29Speaker 1: you were disqualified. It was like six or more writers
- 14:33Speaker 1: and you're disqualified from the running.
- 14:35Speaker 4: I'm like, what the hell is that?
- 14:36Speaker 6: Because they just can't make that many Oscars?
- 14:38Speaker 4: I don't know. I'm like, there's not even any reason? Like,
- 14:40Speaker 4: that's just, nope, too many.
- 14:43Speaker 6: The Academy can't afford it.
- 14:44Speaker 4: Academy, can we call bullshit? Because I don't understand what
- 14:47Speaker 4: your stupid rules are. So I was like, but traditional? Like,
- 14:50Speaker 4: anything that's that old is okay? I don't get that.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the reason I looked that one up, because
- 14:56Speaker 2: I just felt it had this infusion of something from
- 14:59Speaker 2: somewhere beyond trying to create a score for a movie.
- 15:03Speaker 2: And it turned out, yeah, he used some other stuff,
- 15:06Speaker 2: but I don't know what the rules or the judgment...
- 15:10Speaker 2: I do know on the songs, a lot of them
- 15:13Speaker 2: are disqualified because it just has to be recorded for
- 15:17Speaker 2: the movie.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Yeah, specifically. It can't be pre-existing. Or even, actually, it
- 15:20Speaker 4: has to be written specifically. I don't even think you
- 15:22Speaker 4: could have already published it in a previous year or something.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And so a lot of things that people get online
- 15:28Speaker 2: and argue, well, they ought to do this, they ought
- 15:30Speaker 2: to do that, well, they're not eligible because... they were
- 15:34Speaker 2: already existing.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Because I think one of the most memorable, at least,
- 15:38Speaker 1: if not impressive, I really thought that Birdman running track
- 15:42Speaker 1: was amazing. I think a lot of that was pre-existing
- 15:45Speaker 1: or mixed in. He wrote original overall, but I think
- 15:48Speaker 1: he worked in traditional jazz drumming along the way, and
- 15:51Speaker 1: it was just enough that I think they were disqualified.
- 15:54Speaker 6: And who wrote the score for that?
- 15:55Speaker 2: I did.
- 15:58Speaker 6: Oh my gosh, there is so much I don't know
- 16:00Speaker 6: about you, Fred.
- 16:01Speaker 5: I think... When I hear this song, I think it
- 16:05Speaker 5: does a really good job of conveying the kind of
- 16:08Speaker 5: movie it's for. I think it does that. There are, what,
- 16:11Speaker 5: four or five instrumental songs on this list we have.
- 16:15Speaker 5: And out of those, two of those sound like iPhone commercials.
- 16:18Speaker 5: One sounds like a cheap Philip Glass knockoff. And this
- 16:21Speaker 5: one sounds like it's for a Wes Anderson movie.
- 16:23Speaker 4: It definitely does.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Like, if you said, hey, compose me a song for
- 16:26Speaker 5: a Wes Anderson movie, I would instantly grab, like, a
- 16:28Speaker 5: toy piano. And I would grab, like, you know, a
- 16:31Speaker 5: Play School xylophone. And I would start doing exactly what
- 16:34Speaker 5: they did there. So I think the message for, hey,
- 16:37Speaker 5: this is this kind of movie, I think it really
- 16:40Speaker 5: comes across really well with this piece.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's not like something that's a pre-existing sound
- 16:45Speaker 2: like you would have in a recording program. You would
- 16:54Speaker 2: press a button for European melancholy.
- 16:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 2: A music box sound. And a lot of them have
- 17:05Speaker 2: that for me. It's like they're what you would go
- 17:07Speaker 2: to to be a parody of what it is. Right. Yes.
- 17:13Speaker 4: And I don't know.
- 17:13Speaker 2: A lot of these things I found overall depressingly professional.
- 17:19Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yes.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Like they're well done, but they're just so... Very polished.
- 17:22Speaker 2: by the numbers.
- 17:24Speaker 5: It sounds like somebody higher up said, write me an
- 17:26Speaker 5: Oscar song.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Or that thing they do in advertising, like, you know, well,
- 17:31Speaker 2: we can't get the Beatles, so have our guys do
- 17:34Speaker 2: something like that.
- 17:35Speaker 1: Sure. And they do that, like, especially corporations. They will
- 17:39Speaker 1: be like, what can we do that's just like that
- 17:41Speaker 1: and insert it in there? And don't tell them that
- 17:43Speaker 1: we're ripping off their song because we've heard that on
- 17:45Speaker 1: a previous one of these episodes. They did that to
- 17:48Speaker 1: a band and they were like, you could have just
- 17:51Speaker 1: stolen that, you know, sound and done it anyway. They
- 17:54Speaker 1: ended up paying them, but they were like, I don't
- 17:56Speaker 1: know why they did that, really. They had one that
- 17:58Speaker 1: was so close, people wouldn't have known the difference, but.
- 18:01Speaker 6: So, okay, I'm already uncomfortable with this conversation. Well, we've
- 18:07Speaker 6: achieved our goal.
- 18:08Speaker 4: Yes. Just relax. I feel completely out.
- 18:11Speaker 6: Of my element here, once again, on the soundtrack show.
- 18:14Speaker 6: So what makes a good score? Because I feel like
- 18:17Speaker 6: when I took film classes, we were sort of told
- 18:19Speaker 6: that you don't notice a good score, that a score
- 18:23Speaker 6: just heightens sort of the emotional response to scenes. Right. Like,
- 18:26Speaker 6: listening to it and divorcing it from the imagery, is
- 18:29Speaker 6: that a responsible way to judge? Is that how we're judging?
- 18:32Speaker 4: How are we judging?
- 18:33Speaker 6: I like judging, I just don't know how.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I should say, I did see that movie. And
- 18:41Speaker 2: my feelings about the other scores could really change if
- 18:45Speaker 2: I saw the movie, and it might be effective, but.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Of the few that I have seen, some of them
- 18:52Speaker 1: are really good within the context of it.
- 18:56Speaker 2: And to be fair, you know, they say that what I,
- 18:59Speaker 2: the little I know about score writing is you have
- 19:03Speaker 2: to try to come up with, you have very little
- 19:05Speaker 2: time to make an impression, and so you try to
- 19:09Speaker 2: do things that people almost feel like they remember already. Like,
- 19:13Speaker 2: you know, there's not time to get acquainted.
- 19:15Speaker 6: You know, like cueing emotional responses based on.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Shared memory.
- 19:19Speaker 2: And so I think it amplifies it when you just
- 19:21Speaker 2: listen to the score divorced from the movie. You just go,
- 19:25Speaker 2: it's so obvious what they're trying to do. And it
- 19:28Speaker 2: seems manipulative. But I don't know. It may work. Then
- 19:32Speaker 2: I was trying to think, what are the sounds that,
- 19:37Speaker 2: in the context of a movie, are transformed because they're
- 19:41Speaker 2: in the movie? And one of the first ones I
- 19:43Speaker 2: thought of was opera in Fitzcarraldo. because I'm not a
- 19:48Speaker 2: big opera fan, but something about having it blaring from
- 19:52Speaker 2: a ship going over falls in the Amazon, it's like, oh,
- 19:56Speaker 2: I kind of get that now.
- 19:59Speaker 5: Context is important.
- 20:00Speaker 1: That's kind of what I wanted to do anyway. It's like,
- 20:03Speaker 1: you'll have people.
- 20:06Speaker 1: We do enough with people in the industry, and I
- 20:08Speaker 1: kind of like the idea of this being like, the
- 20:11Speaker 1: Oscars are already so very fancy, and they have so
- 20:16Speaker 1: many people that are so educated on what should be
- 20:19Speaker 1: nominated and what should win, and I'm like, I think
- 20:21Speaker 1: what we always do with our coverage, if you want
- 20:24Speaker 1: to call it that, of the actual Oscars is very
- 20:27Speaker 1: stripped down and a normal person. So I did kind
- 20:30Speaker 1: of just want to get real responses. I'm like, okay,
- 20:33Speaker 1: regardless of what's going to win, we're not going to
- 20:35Speaker 1: have any effect on that. Just kind of, what do
- 20:37Speaker 1: you think about this stuff? And like, I, I'm more
- 20:39Speaker 1: interested to just sort of hear someone else's take on
- 20:43Speaker 1: it along the way.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Cause it's nominated either way.
- 20:45Speaker 1: It's like, we're not going to have any effect on
- 20:47Speaker 1: whether it's nominated or who wins the prize. It's, I
- 20:50Speaker 1: think it's ridiculous to try to give any of it
- 20:52Speaker 1: a prize in art really anyway. But I do agree
- 20:56Speaker 1: that like the nominating process does set the bar higher
- 21:00Speaker 1: and does kind of make people hopefully, try to strive
- 21:04Speaker 1: to do something better artistically that's arguable but again i
- 21:09Speaker 1: don't mind the idea of the oscars i think the
- 21:12Speaker 1: idea of one winner is sort of ridiculous but i
- 21:15Speaker 1: like the idea of the nominees all being you know
- 21:19Speaker 1: a certain level of achievement in theory so.
- 21:22Speaker 4: That's my take.
- 21:25Speaker 5: That makes sense and also um this is just you
- 21:29Speaker 5: know thinking about what you guys are saying um I
- 21:32Speaker 5: recorded a soundtrack to a documentary once, and there's a
- 21:37Speaker 5: long story behind that. Working in the industry, looking at you.
- 21:42Speaker 5: It's a documentary about my parents' business, so obviously it
- 21:46Speaker 5: makes sense that I would do that, and I play music,
- 21:48Speaker 5: so whatever. But one of the things I tried to
- 21:51Speaker 5: do was make music that stood on its own and
- 21:56Speaker 5: sounded like something you could enjoy without ever having seen
- 21:59Speaker 5: the movie. And also something that would fit the particular
- 22:02Speaker 5: thing that I wanted it to play behind. Now, my
- 22:04Speaker 5: soundtrack didn't get used at all. So, you know, take
- 22:08Speaker 5: that for whatever it's worth. Well, you know, the guy
- 22:11Speaker 5: that made the movie ended up using music that his
- 22:13Speaker 5: friends made. It wasn't like a major motion picture or
- 22:15Speaker 5: anything by any means. But it was.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Can you plug the movie?
- 22:19Speaker 5: It's called Fit for a King. And I have a
- 22:21Speaker 5: box that I found in my parents' basement that had
- 22:23Speaker 5: like 60 copies in it. And if I would have
- 22:26Speaker 5: thought about it, I would have just said, here, you
- 22:27Speaker 5: guys can have some.
- 22:28Speaker 6: Because.
- 22:29Speaker 5: They were like, you can have that box if you want.
- 22:31Speaker 4: For future prizes.
- 22:32Speaker 5: I used to give them away to guests on the podcast.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Thank you for showing up. Here's a documentary. You don't
- 22:37Speaker 5: have to watch it. You can sit something on it.
- 22:39Speaker 2: So your parents were royalty?
- 22:42Speaker 5: My parents make Elvis costumes. That's so much better.
- 22:45Speaker 6: I was thinking mattresses.
- 22:46Speaker 5: Has this not come up on this show?
- 22:49Speaker 4: Not on this show that I know of.
- 22:50Speaker 6: I would watch the heck out of that documentary.
- 22:52Speaker 5: I'll get you one.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 22:53Speaker 5: You're welcome.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 22:55Speaker 4: I'm really excited now.
- 22:56Speaker 5: The music's in the bonus features. They made sure to
- 22:59Speaker 5: put lots of bonus features in, so they used it
- 23:02Speaker 5: behind the bonus features. But the point is, getting back
- 23:06Speaker 5: to my original point.
- 23:08Speaker 2: I could copy the movie and put your music on
- 23:11Speaker 2: it for you.
- 23:12Speaker 5: You could. You could take the soundtrack off and then
- 23:15Speaker 5: do it as I originally intended. Because it's all about me.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Sort of like a director's cut, but the composer's cut.
- 23:22Speaker 5: There should be more composer's cuts for movies. That's an
- 23:24Speaker 5: excellent idea. I want a copy of Tim Burton's Batman
- 23:28Speaker 5: with just the Prince music in it.
- 23:31Speaker 4: I second that emotion.
- 23:32Speaker 5: I want Batdance playing during the cathedral fight scene. That
- 23:35Speaker 5: would be amazing.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Batdance is kind of the weak one, I hate to
- 23:39Speaker 1: tell you.
- 23:39Speaker 4: The rest of that album is pretty solid.
- 23:41Speaker 5: It's a funk up. No, but to end that, I
- 23:43Speaker 5: just wanted to say that I thought it was an
- 23:46Speaker 5: interesting challenge because I've made music my whole life, but
- 23:50Speaker 5: I never had to do it with a purpose other
- 23:52Speaker 5: than to satisfy the fact that I wanted to make music.
- 23:55Speaker 5: And so it was neat to be like, okay, now
- 23:57Speaker 5: I need to do something kind of sad because this
- 24:00Speaker 5: is where my mom was going through cancer. And I
- 24:02Speaker 5: already had pre-existing bits and pieces of things that I
- 24:07Speaker 5: just kind of turned into something. It gave me an
- 24:09Speaker 5: excuse to turn things that I probably wouldn't have used
- 24:12Speaker 5: into something. And I wonder, for major movies like these songs,
- 24:16Speaker 5: how many of these were like, a guy was like, okay,
- 24:18Speaker 5: I wrote this. a piece of a thing six years ago.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Maybe I can turn that into a song for this movie.
- 24:23Speaker 1: I got a page sitting in my bureau drawer. I
- 24:26Speaker 1: wonder if I can work it into this.
- 24:29Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 24:29Speaker 2: So I'm sure people do that.
- 24:30Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 24:31Speaker 6: Yeah. I was wondering about, I mean, I was looking
- 24:33Speaker 6: at the sort of output that a lot of these
- 24:35Speaker 6: dudes have had and they're doing like six or seven
- 24:37Speaker 6: movies a year.
- 24:38Speaker 4: I mean, one of them was on here twice.
- 24:40Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly.
- 24:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 2: And he did one of them in three weeks.
- 24:44Speaker 4: I saw. Yeah.
- 24:46Speaker 1: And this is probably, I mean, most of them I've
- 24:48Speaker 1: just sort of picked one piece. This one I was
- 24:50Speaker 1: going to throw at least an extra little bit in
- 24:52Speaker 1: here just because I wanted to prove a point about
- 24:55Speaker 1: this soundtrack.
- 25:05Speaker 4: So How all over the map is this soundtrack?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Like, if you go through and listen to different points
- 25:39Speaker 1: in it, you're listening to, like, six or eight different soundtracks. Like,
- 25:42Speaker 1: it is so just amazing the, like, the spectrum of
- 25:47Speaker 1: music that is in this one soundtrack. And that's kind
- 25:50Speaker 1: of why I was just like, this is where I
- 25:52Speaker 1: want to start off. This is some of the more
- 25:54Speaker 1: interesting stuff I want to get into because I feel
- 25:56Speaker 1: like This guy put a lot of work into creating
- 26:00Speaker 1: not just the mood for the movie, but the mood
- 26:02Speaker 1: for each individual scene along the way.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Right. And did you recognize that music, Mike?
- 26:08Speaker 5: Was that from Big Hero 6?
- 26:10Speaker 1: No, but this was on the internet here. And if
- 26:14Speaker 1: you scroll down long enough, somebody mentioned that track. And
- 26:17Speaker 1: I looked at it, and they said it sounded very Castlevania-y.
- 26:20Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 26:20Speaker 5: It sounds kind of like Castlevania.
- 26:22Speaker 4: I was like, that's a good point.
- 26:24Speaker 1: But again, that compared to that first track we listened to,
- 26:28Speaker 1: that's a pretty big spectrum right there.
- 26:30Speaker 5: Both of those are from the Grand Budapest Hotel. The
- 26:32Speaker 5: only movie I've seen, by the way, on this list.
- 26:35Speaker 2: It does sound Castlevania, but it sounds a little bit
- 26:39Speaker 2: like it might be kidding, too. It sounds like it
- 26:42Speaker 2: knows it sounds like it.
- 26:44Speaker 6: It sounds very Wes Anderson.
- 26:47Speaker 1: He's always kind of like, I know I'm being kind
- 26:50Speaker 1: of goofy.
- 26:50Speaker 4: Here, but it's okay.
- 26:52Speaker 2: That's true, that's true.
- 26:54Speaker 4: He knows what he's doing. All right, I say we
- 26:56Speaker 4: move on at this point. Let's see.
- 27:02Speaker 1: So next up, we have an actual movie star herself.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Lost Stars from Begin Again, performed by Keira Knightley. Music
- 27:10Speaker 1: and lyric by Greg Alexander and Danielle Brisbos.
- 27:19Speaker 7: Please don't say.
- 27:24Speaker 10: Just a girl caught up in dreams and fantasies Please
- 27:33Speaker 10: see me.
- 27:37Speaker 7: Reaching out for someone I can see Take my hand,
- 27:43Speaker 7: let's see when we wake up tomorrow Best laid plans.
- 27:49Speaker 10: Sometimes are just a one-night stand I'll be damned, Cupid's
- 27:55Speaker 10: demanding back his arrow So let's get drunk on our
- 28:05Speaker 10: tears and go Tell.
- 28:08Speaker 7: Us the reason youth is wasted.
- 28:11Speaker 2: On the yearn It's.
- 28:14Speaker 7: Hunting season And this lamb is.
- 28:17Speaker 4: On the run.
- 28:19Speaker 7: We're searching for meaning But are we.
- 28:24Speaker 10: All lost stars Trying to light up the dark.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Who are we?
- 28:40Speaker 10: Just a speck of dust within the galaxy.
- 28:47Speaker 3: What is me?
- 28:50Speaker 10: If we're not careful, turns into reality Don't you dare
- 28:59Speaker 10: let our best memories bring you sorrow Yesterday I saw
- 29:06Speaker 10: a lion kiss a deer Turn the page, maybe we'll
- 29:12Speaker 10: find a brand new ending Where we're dancing in our
- 29:21Speaker 10: tears And God, tell.
- 29:25Speaker 11: Us the reason If it's wasted on the year It's
- 29:30Speaker 11: hunting season And this lamb is on the.
- 29:34Speaker 7: Run We're searching for meaning But are we?
- 29:40Speaker 3: For meaning But are we all.
- 29:43Speaker 10: Lost stars Trying to light up the dark I thought
- 29:53Speaker 10: I saw you out there crying I thought I heard
- 29:59Speaker 10: you call my name I thought I heard you out
- 30:05Speaker 10: there crying But.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Just the same.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And God tell.
- 30:17Speaker 11: Us the reason Youth is wasted on the young It's
- 30:23Speaker 11: hunting season And this lamb is on the.
- 30:27Speaker 7: Run Searching for meaning.
- 30:31Speaker 3: But are we all.
- 30:34Speaker 10: Lost stars Trying to light Up the dark Are we
- 30:44Speaker 10: all Lost stars.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Trying to light.
- 30:52Speaker 6: Oh, so that's the version. I think I was clicking
- 30:57Speaker 6: on all the links wrong. So this is not the
- 31:01Speaker 6: Adam Levine version.
- 31:02Speaker 4: There is a version.
- 31:04Speaker 6: There's two different Adam Levine versions and a Keira Knightley version, right?
- 31:07Speaker 4: Within the movie, Adam Levine.
- 31:09Speaker 6: I have seen this movie.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Does perform it as well.
- 31:12Speaker 6: It was not terrible. Which is kind of an endorsement
- 31:16Speaker 6: for me.
- 31:18Speaker 2: Because from just hearing the soundtrack, I would guess that
- 31:21Speaker 2: it was horrible.
- 31:24Speaker 4: That would have been my bad.
- 31:27Speaker 6: If you clicked on the link that Brian sent, then
- 31:30Speaker 6: that is actually the version that Adam Levine sings in
- 31:34Speaker 6: his sellout scene.
- 31:36Speaker 1: That's not what was playing on mine when I... had
- 31:39Speaker 1: that so whatever happened with that link i don't know
- 31:41Speaker 1: but mine is the kira knightley version the movie's.
- 31:44Speaker 6: All about how he wrote this beautiful song about them
- 31:47Speaker 6: and their love and then he sold out and then
- 31:49Speaker 6: it became this terrible pop song so this is the
- 31:52Speaker 6: song this is the song oh there's versions of the
- 31:54Speaker 6: song there's like the like you know kind of toned
- 31:58Speaker 6: down like here i guess before.
- 32:00Speaker 1: He sold out his version After he sold out his
- 32:04Speaker 1: version and then her for real, you know.
- 32:06Speaker 4: She's the one that actually has heart.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Let me ask you this, though. Are the lyrics the
- 32:11Speaker 2: same in these different versions?
- 32:14Speaker 6: Yes. They are the same. But it's the guy from
- 32:18Speaker 6: the New Radicals. And if you hear it, you're like, oh,
- 32:20Speaker 6: that is a New Radicals song, which I didn't realize until.
- 32:23Speaker 2: No, if I hear that guy, I'd go, oh, that's
- 32:24Speaker 2: a Todd Rundgren song.
- 32:26Speaker 6: Well, not the voice, but the structure of the song.
- 32:31Speaker 6: But yeah, the Adam Levine thing where he gets all
- 32:32Speaker 6: high and crazy at the end, that's the sellout version.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Oh my God, no kidding. But does it still have
- 32:38Speaker 2: the line, woe is me in it?
- 32:40Speaker 6: I can't. It's been a while. It's been a minute.
- 32:44Speaker 2: And does the lion still kiss a deer or whatever
- 32:48Speaker 2: the fuck is going on in that song?
- 32:49Speaker 6: And allow me to say that I.
- 32:53Speaker 6: Only thought that it was not terrible because what did
- 32:56Speaker 6: the writer-director do? What was that terrible movie that then
- 32:59Speaker 6: went to Broadway?
- 32:59Speaker 5: Spider-Man turned off. That wasn't a movie. I just got
- 33:03Speaker 5: really excited.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Once?
- 33:06Speaker 6: Once, yes. I hated Once so much. Me too.
- 33:09Speaker 2: It was so boring.
- 33:10Speaker 6: Yeah, it was terrible.
- 33:11Speaker 4: Terrible.
- 33:11Speaker 1: You two are selling me on both of these movies.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I totally want to see them now.
- 33:15Speaker 6: Yes, and they were wrong.
- 33:16Speaker 5: I haven't heard anything that sounded Oscar-worthy in like 15 minutes.
- 33:19Speaker 2: This is terrible.
- 33:22Speaker 6: Yeah, and then overwrought.
- 33:23Speaker 5: Why don't they give Oscars to video games?
- 33:27Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 33:27Speaker 6: That's what I'm here for. I'm here to validate people's
- 33:30Speaker 6: hatred of film.
- 33:31Speaker 5: You see what happened here? Light and dark just made
- 33:33Speaker 5: an eclipse.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And that's why I always go the opposite way of
- 33:36Speaker 1: either of probably. I'm just like, oh, Lucy hated that?
- 33:39Speaker 1: I'm going to watch this movie.
- 33:42Speaker 6: So how did you like War Horse?
- 33:44Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I don't watch movies.
- 33:46Speaker 5: What's a movie?
- 33:47Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 33:48Speaker 2: Oh, War Horse.
- 33:49Speaker 6: I think that was the biggest showdown that I've had
- 33:52Speaker 6: on there.
- 33:54Speaker 4: We got in the trenches with War Horse.
- 33:55Speaker 5: Wait, you liked War Horse?
- 33:56Speaker 2: No.
- 33:58Speaker 4: She loves War Horse.
- 34:00Speaker 2: You told that delightful story about going to see it.
- 34:03Speaker 4: That was one of my favorite stories ever.
- 34:06Speaker 2: That just wasn't very good, was it?
- 34:08Speaker 5: Poor dad.
- 34:11Speaker 4: So... I don't know.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Because that was my take. I like the Keira Knightley.
- 34:18Speaker 1: At least I was surprised that she actually has a
- 34:21Speaker 1: pretty decent voice. Lovely. And to me, that one, I
- 34:25Speaker 1: didn't even get the New Radicals version. I'm listening to it,
- 34:29Speaker 1: hearing all these old bands, and I'm like, she probably
- 34:31Speaker 1: grew up listening. Because she starts singing, and I'm like,
- 34:34Speaker 1: this sounds like a Cardigan song. It's like, I'm like,
- 34:39Speaker 1: these are probably around the time she was listening to
- 34:41Speaker 1: stuff growing up, too. So I'm like, I wonder how
- 34:44Speaker 1: much of that kind of thing that she grew up
- 34:46Speaker 1: listening to influences the way she performs now as a singer,
- 34:50Speaker 1: especially this very singer-songwriter kind of style.
- 34:52Speaker 4: But I thought she had a really good voice.
- 34:54Speaker 6: She might be a perfect person.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I hate those people. Fuck those guys. Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Hashtag fuck those guys. Really?
- 35:01Speaker 2: Her neck scares me, and I'm like, more of her
- 35:03Speaker 2: neck for me then.
- 35:05Speaker 5: Well, she's no Anne Hathaway.
- 35:08Speaker 4: They both have freakish necks.
- 35:09Speaker 5: Yeah, but there's something about Anne Hathaway.
- 35:12Speaker 1: But I do, like, I kind of got to respect
- 35:14Speaker 1: Keira Knightley a little more when she totally called them
- 35:17Speaker 1: out for airbrushing and or doctoring up her poster art
- 35:21Speaker 1: from that terrible pirate-y night movie she was in. And, like,
- 35:25Speaker 1: since then, she's gone on to, like, totally call it,
- 35:27Speaker 1: she did that whole weird, like, I'll pose totally nude,
- 35:31Speaker 1: you know, if you'll.
- 35:32Speaker 4: Run it without airbrushing.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Like, she did another one of those this past year
- 35:36Speaker 1: that she's just like, I think this is bullshit. I
- 35:38Speaker 1: don't think you need to be, like, doctoring up the
- 35:40Speaker 1: photos quite that much. So yeah, I do like that
- 35:43Speaker 1: she's called them out for that several times in her career.
- 35:46Speaker 1: So just for that, I kind of give her points
- 35:48Speaker 1: that she's pretty cool.
- 35:50Speaker 4: And I kind of forget she's a really good actress.
- 35:52Speaker 1: She gets thrown in so many movies as the year
- 35:55Speaker 1: goes on that you kind of.
- 35:56Speaker 4: Lose track of like, oh, she is really a good actress.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Is that why they call it casting? They just throw
- 36:00Speaker 2: them into a movie?
- 36:02Speaker 4: Pretty sure. Have you seen some of these?
- 36:04Speaker 6: I will say this in the Keira Knightley and Hathaway debate,
- 36:07Speaker 6: if that is the debate that we're about to have.
- 36:09Speaker 5: Yes, it is. Let's go.
- 36:12Speaker 6: This is just totally... I'm sorry. This is tangential, but
- 36:16Speaker 6: I apologize in advance, Brian. But I did like a
- 36:20Speaker 6: lot that in the, oh my gosh, I've already forgotten.
- 36:24Speaker 6: What's the Alan Turing movie called?
- 36:26Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 36:27Speaker 2: You know, The Imitation Game.
- 36:29Speaker 6: The Imitation Game. Keira Knightley plays a really smart person
- 36:33Speaker 6: who you believe is a really smart person.
- 36:34Speaker 5: Okay.
- 36:35Speaker 6: In the Chris Nolan movie.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Princess Diaries?
- 36:40Speaker 8: Yes.
- 36:41Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:42Speaker 6: I'm forgetting all my movie titles this year. What's the
- 36:46Speaker 6: space movie with Matthew McConaughey?
- 36:47Speaker 4: Oh, Interstellar.
- 36:48Speaker 6: Interstellar. Anne Hathaway plays a really smart person that you
- 36:52Speaker 6: do not believe is even like.
- 36:53Speaker 5: Oh, I never once said I thought she was smart
- 36:55Speaker 5: or that she could play smart.
- 36:56Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:57Speaker 5: That's not what this debate is about.
- 36:58Speaker 4: He's just all about that neck.
- 37:01Speaker 5: I'm just saying... Okay, before I say that, I don't
- 37:05Speaker 5: watch many movies, so could somebody please tell me a
- 37:07Speaker 5: movie that I might have seen that had Keira Knightland?
- 37:10Speaker 5: because I haven't seen this one. What were some movies that.
- 37:14Speaker 4: I.
- 37:14Speaker 6: Feel like Atonement was her giant breakout movie. I hated
- 37:17Speaker 6: that movie.
- 37:18Speaker 4: That's very Oscar-y, though. I'm trying to think of, like,
- 37:20Speaker 4: normal crap.
- 37:21Speaker 5: Yeah. Give me something PG-13. Those don't get nominated for Oscar.
- 37:24Speaker 4: There you go.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Was she in Pride and Prejudice?
- 37:27Speaker 4: Again, that's very Oscar-y.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Was that just somebody who looks like her?
- 37:30Speaker 4: That's called Natalie Portman.
- 37:34Speaker 6: So what has she been in, like, mainstream, where she
- 37:35Speaker 6: doesn't have an accent?
- 37:37Speaker 2: Well, she was in the Pirate movie.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 37:39Speaker 6: That was dumb.
- 37:40Speaker 4: Yeah. Actually, the first one's not bad, if you don't
- 37:44Speaker 4: know who Johnny Depp is.
- 37:45Speaker 5: Oh, Johnny Depp, I thought you were talking about, you
- 37:47Speaker 5: said the first one, I thought they made a sequel
- 37:49Speaker 5: to the Russell Crowe pirate movie.
- 37:51Speaker 4: No, no.
- 37:52Speaker 5: What was that one?
- 37:52Speaker 4: Master and Commander, Far Side of the Sun.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:57Speaker 4: Oh, let's scroll down while we're on the tangent here.
- 38:00Speaker 2: What was it? It was Master and Commander, Far Side
- 38:03Speaker 2: of the title of this movie.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Lord of the Apes.
- 38:07Speaker 5: I was going to say, I saw five minutes of
- 38:09Speaker 5: Master and Commander, and I thought that water looked amazing.
- 38:11Speaker 5: That boat was so dark in that water. That ocean
- 38:16Speaker 5: was so dark.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Aside from initially actually pretending to be Natalie Portman, which
- 38:20Speaker 1: is what makes that point, again, how can we forget
- 38:24Speaker 1: the Oscar-nominated Bend It Like Beckham?
- 38:27Speaker 5: Didn't see it.
- 38:27Speaker 4: I think I'm exaggerating a little on that.
- 38:29Speaker 2: She was in that?
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yeah. That was a great little movie. She's the other
- 38:33Speaker 4: main girl.
- 38:34Speaker 2: That was a neat little movie.
- 38:36Speaker 4: Love Actually.
- 38:38Speaker 5: Didn't see it.
- 38:38Speaker 4: It's a very questionable relationship going on there.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Love Questionably.
- 38:43Speaker 5: Love, are you fucking serious?
- 38:44Speaker 4: Domino, do you like kicking ass? Thank you. Because Domino.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Kicking ass is all right. I haven't seen Domino.
- 38:49Speaker 4: There's one for your list. All right. That one is
- 38:51Speaker 4: not Oscar-y at all.
- 38:52Speaker 5: What list am I putting this on?
- 38:54Speaker 1: Ass-kicking movies that are directed by a crazy Tony Scott.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Crazy.
- 38:59Speaker 1: That was when he went off the rails, which he
- 39:01Speaker 1: literally did. No offense to the Scott family.
- 39:05Speaker 4: But he did everything else is very.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I don't know serious oscar either oh period costume dramas
- 39:16Speaker 1: i know you like the extra.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Yeah well yeah there's a debate about that because it's
- 39:21Speaker 2: a feminine ending and uh i think nabokov said that
- 39:27Speaker 2: it wouldn't be anna karenina it would It would be
- 39:31Speaker 2: the male ending Karenina. Unless you're a ballerina or a
- 39:37Speaker 2: celebrity then they do the feminine because you're your own
- 39:40Speaker 2: entity somehow.
- 39:41Speaker 4: That's why other languages are dumb.
- 39:43Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 39:43Speaker 5: That's why English rules the world motherfuckers. Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 39:48Speaker 5: In any language you can say it.
- 39:51Speaker 10: All right.
- 39:53Speaker 4: We all love Keira Knightley. That's the moral of the story.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Regardless of whether you like the song or not, Keira
- 39:57Speaker 4: Knightley's pretty cool.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I don't know if I like her that much.
- 39:59Speaker 4: Do you like her now?
- 40:01Speaker 2: She is certainly attractive. She has a great smile and
- 40:05Speaker 2: a great neck.
- 40:07Speaker 5: Wait, is she the one in those vampire, or she
- 40:10Speaker 5: fights wolves or robots or something? And they made nine
- 40:13Speaker 5: of them?
- 40:13Speaker 4: No, they're not. That'd be Mila. Who is it?
- 40:15Speaker 6: Kate Beckinsale.
- 40:16Speaker 4: Or Mila. Take your pick.
- 40:18Speaker 5: I know who Mila Jovovich is.
- 40:20Speaker 4: Okay.
- 40:20Speaker 5: I had her album.
- 40:21Speaker 1: She fights zombies that are kind of like werewolves, and
- 40:24Speaker 1: the other one fights werewolves that are kind of like zombies,
- 40:27Speaker 1: but they're vampires.
- 40:28Speaker 4: It's all very complicated.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Werewolves with robot heads.
- 40:33Speaker 5: Now I'm hooked. IMAX that shit right now.
- 40:37Speaker 2: I was looking for memorable short films, and I asked around,
- 40:42Speaker 2: who has a favorite short film? Because all my favorites
- 40:45Speaker 2: don't exist anymore. I'm going to have to email the
- 40:48Speaker 2: author of one of these stories and say, Does this
- 40:50Speaker 2: thing still exist? I watched it. It's one of my
- 40:53Speaker 2: favorite short films. It's not online anywhere. It's not mentioned.
- 40:57Speaker 2: But Bo, our friend Bo.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Bo's in Boston.
- 41:00Speaker 6: Bo, lover of War Horse.
- 41:04Speaker 2: He said, oh, here's this movie, Flip, and posted a link.
- 41:07Speaker 2: And it was fucking fantastic. And the genius thing in
- 41:11Speaker 2: it is a gorilla with a robot head. That's just
- 41:15Speaker 2: the greatest thing I've ever seen. It's an amazing little film. Yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 5: I like when you juxtapose anything gorilla with robot or
- 41:24Speaker 5: car that floats on water.
- 41:26Speaker 2: Yes, it's all of that.
- 41:28Speaker 4: These are good movies.
- 41:29Speaker 5: Eyes with legs and they just walk around. That's all
- 41:32Speaker 5: amazing to me.
- 41:33Speaker 2: All of this.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Put it all in the same movie.
- 41:37Speaker 2: So that's our first song we're discussing.
- 41:40Speaker 4: There was two. It's going to be several parts, isn't it?
- 41:45Speaker 5: Why did you ask me to come on? You should
- 41:46Speaker 5: have known this was going to happen.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Did we cover all the versions of this song, or
- 41:51Speaker 2: are there more out there?
- 41:53Speaker 6: So that's interesting that that's the one they chose. Is
- 41:57Speaker 6: that how it works, or is that the one they
- 41:59Speaker 6: put up for nomination?
- 42:01Speaker 4: Well, see, they do that.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Because that's, I mean, a lot of times, and that
- 42:05Speaker 1: will come up later on this episode or the next episode.
- 42:07Speaker 2: They put up the sellout version for the Oscar.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Well, no, they will, I mean. it's their movie.
- 42:12Speaker 1: So they can rework the songs however they want. And
- 42:13Speaker 1: a lot of times they will do multiple versions for
- 42:16Speaker 1: the soundtrack to work in at different times in there.
- 42:19Speaker 1: But then I don't know who gets to pick what version.
- 42:22Speaker 5: See how I would guess that works is they pick
- 42:25Speaker 5: the version that was published that has the, uh, like
- 42:28Speaker 5: whatever was turned in to have the rights written. They,
- 42:31Speaker 5: they just use the original. This is the song. And then,
- 42:34Speaker 5: any version that's made of that particular song still falls
- 42:37Speaker 5: under the same song.
- 42:38Speaker 1: But who gets to pick which version is then the officially...
- 42:41Speaker 1: Because this one, I think, on the Oscar website specifically
- 42:44Speaker 1: said Keira Knightley.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I think it's usually Al Pacino has the final say.
- 42:50Speaker 6: And he was like, I would like to see that
- 42:52Speaker 6: pretty lady with the neck on stage and not that
- 42:54Speaker 6: Adam Levine douchebag.
- 42:57Speaker 5: That's why we love Al Pacino. He makes the right call.
- 43:00Speaker 2: That's why they always cut to him during the show.
- 43:03Speaker 2: It's like this is his... His decision.
- 43:07Speaker 5: My only thing when I listened to this song, I
- 43:09Speaker 5: didn't have much of an opinion about it, but I
- 43:11Speaker 5: did think Adam Levine's the guy on The Voice, right?
- 43:14Speaker 6: That is correct.
- 43:15Speaker 5: And he was in Maroon 5.
- 43:16Speaker 6: Also correct. And sadly, I believe he's still in Maroon 5.
- 43:19Speaker 5: Okay, really?
- 43:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 43:21Speaker 5: This was the first, I don't know much of his story,
- 43:23Speaker 5: but this was the first time I ever heard him
- 43:26Speaker 5: sing where I thought, I can see why he's on
- 43:28Speaker 5: a show like that. Because otherwise I was like, is
- 43:30Speaker 5: he on here because he's pretty? Like I'd heard one
- 43:32Speaker 5: Maroon 5 song.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Whichever one got super popular.
- 43:40Speaker 6: Have you seen that clip where it's a hidden camera
- 43:43Speaker 6: thing but not where they go to weddings and they
- 43:45Speaker 6: basically have Maroon 5 crash the weddings where there's like,
- 43:48Speaker 6: there's a secret band playing at your wedding and then
- 43:50Speaker 6: they pull up a veil and it's Maroon 5 and
- 43:53Speaker 6: then the bride and groom freak out. I was like,
- 43:55Speaker 6: I would freak out but for very different reasons.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Yeah, me too. What if you were like, I don't care.
- 44:02Speaker 6: What if you were just angry? I would not feel
- 44:05Speaker 6: good about it.
- 44:06Speaker 5: Way to ruin my wedding day.
- 44:07Speaker 6: Marilyn Manson going.
- 44:09Speaker 2: Door to door trying to shock people. Comes to your door.
- 44:14Speaker 6: Isn't that kind of what he does?
- 44:18Speaker 4: At this point, that's kind of where he's at now.
- 44:21Speaker 6: Anyway.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Well, I guess you'd have to go like, well, at
- 44:24Speaker 2: least it's not you two.
- 44:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Truth.
- 44:28Speaker 5: Did Hold Me, Cure Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me get
- 44:30Speaker 5: nominated for an Oscar? Not to bring it back to
- 44:32Speaker 5: Batman again, but... Might have. That's the only U2 song that.
- 44:35Speaker 4: Was actually good. Probably nudged out by A Kiss for
- 44:37Speaker 4: a Rose.
- 44:38Speaker 8: Oh, shit.
- 44:39Speaker 5: The 90s.
- 44:40Speaker 6: Fuck.
- 44:40Speaker 4: You can't fight the 90s.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Oh, shit.
- 44:43Speaker 4: The 90s.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Fuck.
- 44:45Speaker 4: Hashtag oh, shit.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 44:48Speaker 6: The 90s.

- 45:58Speaker 4: You ate it.
- 45:59Speaker 5: Education has never been so wow!
- 46:23Speaker 2: Hi, this is Emma Caulfield, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 46:34Speaker 4: All right, The Theory of Everything.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:37Speaker 4: By Johan Johansson. This would be the first track, Cambridge, 1963.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 47:09Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 47:33Speaker 3: It is the most important part of the process. It
- 47:39Speaker 3: is the most important part of the process. It is
- 47:42Speaker 3: the most important part I also did not know that
- 48:04Speaker 3: we only had to listen to a track. I actually endured.
- 48:20Speaker 4: I mean, that was you.
- 48:21Speaker 6: The entirety of this one worked.
- 48:22Speaker 5: That's why when I sent.
- 48:23Speaker 1: It, I gave the tracks, but you're free to listen
- 48:26Speaker 1: to whatever you want.
- 48:26Speaker 4: I just got a YouTube.
- 48:28Speaker 6: Oh, like you were telling us, that's the one to...
- 48:30Speaker 6: I'm so bad at reading directions, apparently. I thought I
- 48:33Speaker 6: was good at it.
- 48:33Speaker 5: Way to accidentally go above and beyond the call of duty.
- 48:36Speaker 6: Way to accidentally excel.
- 48:38Speaker 2: Oh, man, I hate it when I do something I
- 48:40Speaker 2: don't get credit for. That's my whole philosophy of life.
- 48:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:44Speaker 4: Well, then, okay, you've... You've listened to a good amount
- 48:47Speaker 4: of it.
- 48:47Speaker 1: So aside from Cambridge 1963, what do you think of
- 48:51Speaker 1: The Theory of Everything?
- 48:53Speaker 4: I mean, I don't know. It was fine.
- 48:54Speaker 6: This is where I feel like I'm not in a
- 48:57Speaker 6: position to weigh in.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Did you find you wanted to take a nap somewhere
- 49:00Speaker 1: in the middle of it?
- 49:04Speaker 6: I kind of felt that way about all of these.
- 49:06Speaker 4: Most of them.
- 49:07Speaker 1: And no offense to any of them, but the middle
- 49:10Speaker 1: ones here are all kind of As we've said many times, Oscar-y.
- 49:15Speaker 1: They're very much what I expected, especially in this type
- 49:19Speaker 1: of movie.
- 49:20Speaker 2: So expected.
- 49:23Speaker 1: I even got a very, specifically The Theory of Everything,
- 49:26Speaker 1: it doesn't really sound like it because I think he's
- 49:29Speaker 1: a maybe, I don't know if he's a better composer,
- 49:33Speaker 1: but he's more original would be the Social Network soundtrack.
- 49:37Speaker 1: Because we even get that time period at Ivy League
- 49:40Speaker 1: kind of schools. It's a very similar vibe. And as
- 49:44Speaker 1: I got into it, I was like, I can kind
- 49:46Speaker 1: of hear that without the weird edgy thing that he
- 49:48Speaker 1: was throwing in there on that one.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Wait, he did that soundtrack as well? Wait, what are
- 49:51Speaker 6: you saying?
- 49:51Speaker 4: No, I was just comparing it to.
- 49:53Speaker 1: To me, it sounds like a stripped down version of
- 49:57Speaker 1: kind of what the social networker was going for, but without...
- 50:00Speaker 1: the interesting little weird stuff that Trent Reznor.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Was putting in there.
- 50:04Speaker 6: Oh, right. That was Trent Reznor.
- 50:06Speaker 4: To me, this is like the boring version of the
- 50:08Speaker 4: social network.
- 50:09Speaker 6: Here are the things that I like about it. I
- 50:10Speaker 6: like that his name is Johan Johannesson. I like that
- 50:14Speaker 6: he's from Reykjavik. I like... No, that's pretty much it.
- 50:19Speaker 4: You just like saying fun words.
- 50:20Speaker 5: At any point, did listening to this soundtrack make you
- 50:23Speaker 5: want to buy an iPhone? Because that was what I
- 50:25Speaker 5: wrote in my notes. This makes me want to buy
- 50:26Speaker 5: a phone.
- 50:27Speaker 4: That's hilarious.
- 50:28Speaker 2: No, it made me, when I listened to it, it
- 50:31Speaker 2: made me sing that Billy Preston song. Come give me
- 50:36Speaker 2: your softness.
- 50:38Speaker 5: Comfort me with all.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It has the exact same, yeah, the clip I heard
- 50:44Speaker 2: sounded like that treacly old Billy Preston tune.
- 50:48Speaker 4: Well, now it's disqualified. Way to go.
- 50:52Speaker 6: Now we never get to hear anybody say Johan Johansson
- 50:55Speaker 6: from the stage.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:57Speaker 6: So yeah, I don't know what we say about this one.
- 50:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:59Speaker 1: I mean, that was my take on it. I was like,
- 51:01Speaker 1: there's nothing wrong with it. It's very polished. It's very
- 51:04Speaker 1: well put together.
- 51:05Speaker 6: Just by the numbers. I did see this movie.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:09Speaker 6: I don't remember it standing out.
- 51:12Speaker 4: See, and that is like, refer to the point you
- 51:15Speaker 4: brought up.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Like, it is a fine line whether like, is it
- 51:18Speaker 1: doing this job better if you don't notice it as
- 51:21Speaker 1: being a background score kind of thing? Or does it,
- 51:26Speaker 1: is it more impressive because you are walking out of
- 51:28Speaker 1: the theater humming it? Because I'm guessing you weren't doing
- 51:31Speaker 1: that with the theory of everything.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Here's what I think about that. And that's why, you know, like,
- 51:36Speaker 2: although I hate almost everything we've listened to, almost.
- 51:40Speaker 4: And in life. I love this guy.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I say that with, you know, I want to
- 51:46Speaker 2: preface that. Like, if I saw it with the movie,
- 51:49Speaker 2: it could really change because, There is a weird, fine line,
- 51:54Speaker 2: especially if you think of Jaws. I know the first
- 51:58Speaker 2: time Spielberg heard the theme for Jaws, he didn't know
- 52:03Speaker 2: if it was a joke.
- 52:04Speaker 4: He didn't know if.
- 52:05Speaker 2: He was being punked. He was like, really? Are you
- 52:07Speaker 2: kidding me? I think I said, no, that's the theme
- 52:10Speaker 2: for Jaws. And everybody was aware of that theme, but
- 52:15Speaker 2: it still worked. It was very effective, and yet everybody, like, uh,
- 52:21Speaker 2: was super aware of it. It was like, wow. Um,
- 52:25Speaker 2: theme song can get right in your face and still
- 52:28Speaker 2: do its job.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I mean, it, it almost makes most of those scenes,
- 52:33Speaker 1: you know, it's like without that, if you strip that
- 52:35Speaker 1: away and just watch them, they're probably still well shot,
- 52:38Speaker 1: but are.
- 52:38Speaker 4: They near as tense?
- 52:40Speaker 1: And do they freak people out the same without that
- 52:42Speaker 1: weird pulsating?
- 52:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:45Speaker 2: It might've been to them not being able to get
- 52:47Speaker 2: the footage they needed. Yeah. and so the theme music
- 52:50Speaker 2: sort of carried the scenes where they couldn't get the damn.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Shark I mean that whole first two thirds it's like
- 52:56Speaker 1: it's all about POV of the shark and the music
- 52:59Speaker 1: and that becomes our villain our main character whatever you
- 53:02Speaker 1: want to call the shark it's like he that's the
- 53:05Speaker 1: way we see him up until two thirds of the
- 53:07Speaker 1: way into the movie so it's yeah it's pretty effective
- 53:11Speaker 1: as themes go and you can have like.
- 53:12Speaker 6: A really technically like unimpressive theme that works really well
- 53:17Speaker 6: for the film like I don't know. Any of those
- 53:20Speaker 6: sort of like atonal two note sort of background.
- 53:25Speaker 4: John Carpenter. Who does it masterfully.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Most years they have like an understated song, like not
- 53:35Speaker 2: a musically impressive, but just like a little charming thing.
- 53:39Speaker 2: They don't really have that this year.
- 53:40Speaker 4: Yeah. They're all kind of.
- 53:42Speaker 2: I think her had that ukulele song.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:46Speaker 2: And it's just like, it's, And even, I remember Reds
- 53:49Speaker 2: that had a ukulele song in it that stayed in
- 53:52Speaker 2: my head a long time ago.
- 53:53Speaker 4: You just really like ukuleles.
- 53:55Speaker 2: Could be. Well, and then, you know, like Juno had
- 53:58Speaker 2: that goofy song that was not even quite a song.
- 54:02Speaker 2: It was just, like, silly. We may have played it previously.
- 54:08Speaker 4: Was it like the intro song, the opening?
- 54:10Speaker 2: I don't know. It's the one with the funny lyrics.
- 54:13Speaker 4: Yeah. I think that, yeah. It's pretty catchy, though. Yeah.
- 54:16Speaker 4: For a non-song, it's pretty catchy.
- 54:18Speaker 2: They don't have anything like that this year, but a
- 54:20Speaker 2: lot of times they will do something that's just odd
- 54:24Speaker 2: and accessible in the sense that the characters could play it.
- 54:30Speaker 1: We have that on the song side, but score is
- 54:33Speaker 1: all pretty by the numbers.
- 54:35Speaker 6: Yeah, but... To speak to that, in terms of, I mean,
- 54:38Speaker 6: how many original songs are there? Like, I mean, when
- 54:41Speaker 6: you look at this list, it's not an impressive list,
- 54:43Speaker 6: which makes me wonder if these are, in fact, the
- 54:45Speaker 6: only five original songs written for film this year. I mean, like,
- 54:48Speaker 6: when you drag out that Rita Ora song, which I
- 54:52Speaker 6: guess we'll get to at some point. I have a
- 54:55Speaker 6: special affection for the Lego song.
- 54:56Speaker 5: It's not a bad song. It's just I heard it
- 54:58Speaker 5: and I was like, it's not really.
- 55:00Speaker 6: But when I saw that movie, I mean, everybody was
- 55:03Speaker 6: singing that movie out of the theater and then for
- 55:04Speaker 6: the next three weeks. And, I mean, that song's got something.
- 55:08Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 55:09Speaker 6: It's terrible, but it's great.
- 55:10Speaker 4: To me, it just sounds like Tom.
- 55:12Speaker 6: Wait, we're not there yet.
- 55:13Speaker 4: What's the name? Tom.
- 55:14Speaker 6: Bless Brian's heart. We're not there yet.
- 55:15Speaker 4: Parks and Rec. Tom Haverford.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:19Speaker 2: It sounds like he did Coke and made up a song.
- 55:21Speaker 5: That's kind of what I thought.
- 55:22Speaker 6: I mean, that's kind of what happened, though.
- 55:24Speaker 5: But is that worth an Oscar?
- 55:25Speaker 4: It's like the lonely... Planet guy? The Lonely Island.
- 55:29Speaker 6: Lonely Island.
- 55:30Speaker 4: Who are on this list eventually.
- 55:32Speaker 6: The Lonely Island folks. I don't want to skip ahead,
- 55:35Speaker 6: but if you look at the Wikipedia entry of the
- 55:38Speaker 6: guy who's credited with writing that song, it's amazing.
- 55:42Speaker 4: It's adorable.
- 55:43Speaker 6: I suggest everybody, unless they've taken it down by that point,
- 55:45Speaker 6: because I feel like he probably updates it daily to
- 55:47Speaker 6: make sure it stays there. But the personal life, he
- 55:50Speaker 6: clearly wrote his own Wikipedia entry. So the personal life
- 55:53Speaker 6: is like, 20 paragraphs about like the first time he
- 55:56Speaker 6: saw Star Wars and like how he loves the movie
- 55:59Speaker 6: Superman and then like the career paragraph is like half
- 56:04Speaker 6: a paragraph which is like you know the five things
- 56:06Speaker 6: he's done which is mostly writing for Robot Chicken.
- 56:09Speaker 5: I don't want to derail this again but you reminded
- 56:15Speaker 5: me of the time that my mom decided the family
- 56:18Speaker 5: business needed a Wikipedia page so she wrote the Wikipedia
- 56:21Speaker 5: page and then gave it to me to read it
- 56:23Speaker 5: and it was very Butch and Kim were high school sweethearts,
- 56:26Speaker 5: and they loved each other so much.
- 56:27Speaker 4: That's exactly what this is.
- 56:28Speaker 5: One time, Butch asked Kim out on a date, and
- 56:30Speaker 5: I was like, Mom, you can't use any of this.
- 56:32Speaker 4: Why not?
- 56:33Speaker 5: Wikipedia rules. It sounds a little too close to the fire.
- 56:35Speaker 2: It has to be published stuff.
- 56:38Speaker 6: Yeah, there were no notes.
- 56:39Speaker 5: It has to be written by a third party, right?
- 56:41Speaker 5: An unbiased third party?
- 56:42Speaker 2: I don't get that vibe from it at all. To me,
- 56:45Speaker 2: that song sounds like presentation music for a pyramid scheme.
- 56:52Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 56:54Speaker 5: Everything is awesome.
- 56:55Speaker 4: We're going to make a lot of money.
- 56:57Speaker 2: It's fantastic. Everybody get on board and bring your friends in.
- 57:01Speaker 6: But that's part of the joke.
- 57:02Speaker 4: I think that's why it's so genius, actually.
- 57:04Speaker 1: It's exactly what it does really well.
- 57:08Speaker 6: It's really effective in the movie.
- 57:10Speaker 1: I mean, that is what it becomes within the movie.
- 57:14Speaker 2: Well, then I sit corrected because that makes all kinds
- 57:17Speaker 2: of sense.
- 57:17Speaker 6: Yeah, it's satire.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Yeah, it plays both ends. It is like this whole...
- 57:23Speaker 1: the way that he thinks is built around teamwork. But
- 57:26Speaker 1: there's this underlying, like, socialist message going on, or communist message.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Depending on how deep you want to take these things, that, like,
- 57:34Speaker 1: there's this weird, understated thing going on that becomes very
- 57:39Speaker 1: obvious as the movie goes on. But it's built on, like,
- 57:43Speaker 1: a very simple premise and simple tune that, like, again.
- 57:48Speaker 4: is the.
- 57:48Speaker 1: Kind of thing that's so simple it could be spoon-fed
- 57:51Speaker 1: to a society.
- 57:51Speaker 4: And they would eat it up, and they would love it. Oh, okay.
- 57:55Speaker 4: It's pretty genius, actually. All right. So.
- 58:01Speaker 6: But we're not there yet.
- 58:02Speaker 5: We're not there yet.
- 58:03Speaker 6: Let's forget we had this conversation.
- 58:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll just do all of this over again when
- 58:08Speaker 2: we get there. Yep.
- 58:09Speaker 6: What's next, Brian?
- 58:10Speaker 1: We'll do another one of these scores that you love
- 58:13Speaker 1: so much with Mr.
- 58:15Speaker 4: Turner by Gary Yershon.
- 58:20Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 58:20Speaker 8: © transcript Emily Beynon ©.
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: Transcript Emily Beynon.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: This one I actually liked. There was enough dissonance to
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: keep me motivated to continue to see where the resolve was.
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: Because it was like, oh, a sour thing just happened. Oh,
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: a sour thing just happened. Okay, now it's kind of
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: pretty again. It made me.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: Interested to see what the story would be.
- 1:01:48Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:01:48Speaker 6: This is the one I hated the most.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Well, it feels like it's doing something different, but very
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: purposefully different in that opening track there. It seems like
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: he's almost oddly bending the notes and going out of
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: his way to make it a little weird. But I
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: feel like as you get further into the score, it
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: does get a little more traditional of that period piece.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Kind of, let's make a movie about an artist, which
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: Fred loves.
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: This is the one movie I ate that I had
- 1:02:16Speaker 6: not seen that was nominated for score.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: You've seen all of the rest of the movies?
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: I have.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: For score.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: What are you saying? Because I tend to hate movies
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: about artists.
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: Well, that's just of the many things you hate in
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: the universe. I know you're not a fan of art.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: Biopic kind of nonsense.
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: No, I'm not.
- 1:02:31Speaker 5: Not usually.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: I did like, what was the one? Oh, I can't
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: think of her name now. It's going to kill me.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: Throw me a lifeline.
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: What are we talking about right now?
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: The one where, who's the one French actor who by law,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: Gerard Depardieu has to be in every French movie, or
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: he did for a while. He played Rodin in the
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: movie about the sculptor.
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: Rodin versus Godzilla.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: He played Rodin. She was his student, mistress, and an
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: artist in her own right.
- 1:03:09Speaker 6: Sounds like a very original film.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Oh, it was a great movie. It was like the
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: best artist biopic I've ever seen.
- 1:03:18Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:03:18Speaker 5: I thought the movie about Harvey, what's his name, that
- 1:03:21Speaker 5: was friends with Robert Crump, Harvey P.
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: Carr.
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: That's a good movie.
- 1:03:25Speaker 5: I thought that was a good movie about an artist.
- 1:03:27Speaker 5: Arguably an artist.
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: Camille Claudel.
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: I just looked it up. Camille Claudel.
- 1:03:32Speaker 5: Excellent work.
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: Yeah. And part of it was shot in.
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: The Grand Palais, where at one time I had some
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: work hanging in the Young Painters Show.
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: Is that a fact?
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: That's a fact.
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a moment where you can go up over
- 1:03:49Speaker 2: her shoulder, up there, right up there. That was where
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: my stuff was.
- 1:03:52Speaker 6: Oh, my gracious. Where is that piece now?
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: It's in my attic.
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: What?
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Why is it in your attic? Until your biopic comes out,
- 1:04:01Speaker 4: that's where.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: It will be.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: It was a direction I decided was like I couldn't
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: live going in that direction. I couldn't do it. But
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: it was cool for a while. And Joe Downing was
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: there when I was there. Told me I had the
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: best piece in the show. He was so sweet.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: To continue answering follow-up questions, American Splendor is the movie
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: about Harvey Pekar, which is actually very good.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: And from a while ago.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: That was good. I don't... I have to.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: Different kind of artist.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Yeah. I didn't include that. As, yeah, I should have.
- 1:04:39Speaker 5: But it's not really, the art you're talking about is
- 1:04:42Speaker 5: not Harvey Pekar art.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: No, it's not even that.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: It's true. For a long time, Camille Claudel was the
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: only one, and I got in the habit of saying that,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: and then I saw another one, and I never updated.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: You need to update your files.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: I just say things that I say.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: It's a new update. You have to reboot yourself. And
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: Birdman is the scores performed by Antonio Sanchez. From a
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: while ago, when you asked.
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: Thank you. For the person that has been screaming at
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: their computer for the last hour and a half.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Like, I get no respect, damn you.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: So since we already brought it up, let's just round
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: this one out with Everything is Awesome. Music and lyric
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: by Sean Patterson, who has an adorable website.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: It is precious.
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: Go there while it's still up.
- 1:05:29Speaker 2: It was on Wikipedia.
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: Yes.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I think he has his own page, too, that probably
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: is relatively close to that. Because it had a whole
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: lot of his crazy TV credits. Didn't he win an
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Emmy along the way for Robot Chicken?
- 1:05:43Speaker 6: I feel like he does a lot of journaling.
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: He does a lot of crazy.
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: He actually has.
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: His own Wikipedia. It's just his Wikipedia. He has entries
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: on everything in the world that he wrote.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: But see, this is one of those that.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: Fell into that same category, wherein within that movie, there
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: are multiple versions. They're specifically the one that's played in there,
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: which is what I'm going to play, because I feel
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: like that's the one that is referenced within the movie,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: that is within context of what's going on, the one
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: that the characters hear. Now, Tegan and Sarah do the
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: single version that then plays during the credits, and I
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: couldn't find what they've linked specifically to the nomination, what
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: they're going to go with, Are they going to drag
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: them out on stage and have them perform because they're
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: more of a name, which may be the case. But
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: to me, it's like the one in the movie feels
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: like the one that should be used. And sometimes they
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: play that game of like, who do we want to
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: get to come? Because the last year, the freaking Frozen,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: which everybody loved that song.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: You know, I still have never heard that song.
- 1:06:51Speaker 6: I'm not even sure that's possible.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: It was performed by.
- 1:06:54Speaker 6: If you have left your house in the last year
- 1:06:56Speaker 6: and a half... Yeah. I don't know if that's possible.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: Or even like if you're just sleeping at home with
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: your head on a pillow, somebody would break in and
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: sing it into your ear.
- 1:07:07Speaker 5: They talk about it at work all the time because
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: Frozen was a favorite movie among my coworkers.
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: I got to admit, I don't hate the movie. I
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: think it's pretty good.
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: I also saw it with a five-year-old girl, so I
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: watched her enjoy it, which sort of raises the bar
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: It sounds like it would be a great movie. I've
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: just never heard the song. That I know of.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: It's performed by Kwame O'Claudel. All right. Or whatever the
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: hell Jean Travolta said. It's performed by Adit Aziz. Adit Aziz.
- 1:07:35Speaker 5: And it plays during the cathedral scene in Batman.
- 1:07:37Speaker 2: Gotcha.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: But that was the thing. She does it within the movie.
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: She's the big Broadway star, so that's who they go with.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: But within that same soundtrack, Demi Lovato covers it, too. Truthfully,
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: I like her version better, so take that, Kwame O'Claudel.
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 1:07:53Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: Whoever that is so i'm like why why do they
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: get to pick never heard it because.
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: They wanted to get her because.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: They wanted to get her to come to the oscars
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: so they pick that version like i don't know i
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: was like who decides which version within the soundtrack gets
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: nominated it's very.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: Patino yeah i think it's going to be tegan and
- 1:08:14Speaker 6: sarah and like animated lego like lego dancers.
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: And lonely island Yes. I think they're going to want
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: to get Lonely Island there.
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: What they need to do is they need to get dancers.
- 1:08:24Speaker 5: They need to put a Lego backdrop and have dancers
- 1:08:27Speaker 5: with things that attach to them so they can build
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: onto themselves a statue in the background.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: Is it too late to get you working on the Oscars?
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: We need to get you in touch with the producers
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:08:37Speaker 5: It's not too late for them, but it's too late
- 1:08:39Speaker 5: for me personally.
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: In general.
- 1:08:41Speaker 5: Hashtag fuck those guys.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: I agree. It is too late for you, but it's
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: not too late for this episode.
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: So, obviously, we've just gone halfway into this deal, so
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: I say we wrap this one up. We come back
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: next week and we talk about the rest of the songs. Okay.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: to be continued to be continued and until then just
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: keep humming to yourself everything is awesome because once you
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: hear this you cannot have it in your head for
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: the next I don't know rest of your life there's
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: no escaping everything is awesome another reason I think it's
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: kind of genius and it works because it It works
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: in a weird earworm way that seems like it would
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: actually just burrow itself into your brain like.
- 1:09:26Speaker 4: A good, you know, jingle would do.
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: And, you know, again, kind of why that song works
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: so well within the context of the movie.
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: Can I ask your listeners for a request before the
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: next episode?
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: You can. They usually don't care.
- 1:09:40Speaker 5: Somebody please make me a mix CD or MP3 thumb
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: drive thing and put songs that are all everything themed. Like,
- 1:09:47Speaker 5: everything is awesome and everything is beautiful. What is that,
- 1:09:50Speaker 5: Ray Stevens? Everything is beautiful. That song?
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: In its own way.
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: Anything that has everything in it.
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: R-E-M, the everything.
- 1:09:59Speaker 10: R-E-M.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: Hurts?
- 1:10:00Speaker 5: Is that it? Everything hurts.
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: Everything hurts. Everything hurts.
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: No, you are the everything.
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:10:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: So there is a list of songs with that in
- 1:10:14Speaker 5: the title, right?
- 1:10:15Speaker 6: Does it start with everything or everything just has to
- 1:10:17Speaker 6: be in there?
- 1:10:17Speaker 5: Everything just has to be in there. Everything.
- 1:10:20Speaker 4: Everything is awesome.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: Well, with that, we will round out this episode. And
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: remind you, Get a Life will provide the soundtrack.
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: Everything is awesome Everything is cool when we're part of
- 1:10:33Speaker 3: a team Everything is awesome When we're living our dream

- 1:10:49Speaker 3: you and I, going forever Let's party forever We're the same,
- 1:10:55Speaker 3: I like you, you like me. We're all working in harmony.
- 1:11:00Speaker 8: Everything is our sound.
- 1:11:01Speaker 3: Everything is cool when you're part of the team. Everything
- 1:11:07Speaker 3: is our sound.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: Let's see those smiles all around.
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: Riding scooters through the park.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: Getting home before it's dark. Comfy shoes and candy bars.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: Playing tunes on my guitar. Swimsuit, summer dress. Playing on
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: the beach the best.
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: Skin, milk, white, red.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: Got my homework weeks ahead.

- 1:11:48Speaker 2: Oh, there's another movie called Theory of Everything.
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: Nobody can hear you anyway, so it doesn't matter.
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: There is another movie called The Theory of Everything. 2006,
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: Are you getting money off this? Are you in fact
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: an executive producer?
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: No, it sounds like it sounds just like depressing and
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: Or it's like a guy is trying to work out
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: the theory. It's like, I think, a Christian-themed movie where
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: a guy's trying to work out the theory of everything,
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: and he thinks it'll prove God, the existence of God,
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: but then he has Alzheimer's, and he knew he was
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: looking for something.
- 1:12:26Speaker 5: It's like memento meets pie.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: But he's not sure what it was. I mean, it
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: may be a very touching movie. I haven't seen it.
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: I'm just mocking it.
- 1:12:36Speaker 4: Like you do.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: Yeah, just sight unseen.
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: That's how we roll.
- 1:12:45Speaker 5: Memento meets pie.
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: I wanted to mock it like 20 feet away from
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: the microphone so I could just be a voice in
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: the wilderness, but no, you brought me back. Every time
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: I think I'm out, you bring me back.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: Everything is awesome.
- 1:13:01Speaker 5: Thank you, Al Pacino.
