- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.
- 0:15A podcast about what happens when life throws you something
- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin. Parkinson's didn't just happen
- 0:32to me, it happened to my wife, it happened to my kids, it
- 0:35happened to my friends. Even they didn't sign up for it.
- 0:38I may be the one diagnosed, but they're the ones living with it
- 0:42too. Let's talk about the impact that
- 0:44this thing has on us and on them.
- 0:58Hey, friends, welcome back. This is, if this is your first
- 1:01time here, I'm Bryce, and this is living with Parkinson's, The
- 1:03good, the bad, and the reality. And this podcast is all about
- 1:07telling the truth about Parkinson's.
- 1:09The parts that are hard to say out loud and the parts that need
- 1:12to be said even more. Today's episode's a little
- 1:15different because it's not just about us, not just about me.
- 1:20It's called Parkinson's doesn't just affect me, but it affects
- 1:23us. And let's get right into it.
- 1:25When I was diagnosed, I remember thinking, OK, what now?
- 1:29But what I didn't realize in that very moment was I wasn't
- 1:31the only one who got diagnosed that day.
- 1:35My wife got diagnosed, my kids got diagnosed, my friends, even
- 1:38my Co workers all got handed something they didn't ask for.
- 1:42They didn't have the symptoms, they didn't have those physical
- 1:45symptoms or those cognitive symptoms.
- 1:48But they live with the fear, the unknown, the awkward
- 1:53conversations, the shifts in plans, the long waits, the short
- 1:56answers, and the weight of watching someone you love change
- 1:59in ways that are progressive. And honestly, you can't stop.
- 2:04Imagine, right? I mean, we go through that
- 2:05ourselves, don't we? Those that are diagnosed with
- 2:07it, you know, we feel that we've, we're, it's frustrating,
- 2:11it's frustrating, it's frustrating.
- 2:13You know, we go through all these different emotions.
- 2:15We don't know what, you know what one, why one day is good,
- 2:18one, why one day isn't so good. We don't know what the future
- 2:21looks like. We have all these fear and
- 2:22doubts and things that run through our minds.
- 2:24And you know, we keep ourselves positive and we keep moving
- 2:27forward, which we do and it's great.
- 2:28And, and you know what we, we believe that at least I believe,
- 2:32and hope you believe too, that, you know, diagnosis of
- 2:35Parkinson's is not a death sentence, right?
- 2:38We still have a good life to live.
- 2:39We're going to do life. We're going to do it today.
- 2:41We're going to live it. That's what we do here.
- 2:43That's what the followers of this channel are the, the my
- 2:47inner circle where you're doing life, we're doing it hard.
- 2:49We're we're living life and we're going to enjoy it.
- 2:51We really, really are to, to the best we've combined.
- 2:54But think about it, all those around you, right?
- 2:57Those around you, they have those same feelings and those
- 3:00same kind of fears. So what are we going to do about
- 3:04it? Well, let's talk about our care
- 3:05partners for a second. The people who stay, the ones
- 3:09who help, sometimes without ever calling themselves caregivers.
- 3:12The ones who do the dishes, carry the bags, sit in the
- 3:14waiting rooms and Google symptoms late at night.
- 3:18They feel guilty for being tired.
- 3:20They feel helpless when they can't fix it.
- 3:23They feel invisible when people ask, but how is he doing?
- 3:26They carry so much, and half the time they're doing it quietly.
- 3:31Then they're friends. Some stay and some slowly
- 3:34disappear. Can you relate to that?
- 3:36I sure can. Let me know in the comments.
- 3:38Did you? Did you lose friends?
- 3:40Have you lost people? Have you lost your peeps, which
- 3:42really weren't your friends if you lost them?
- 3:44And that's an easy way to get over it quickly.
- 3:48It's not always out of malice. Sometimes it's discomfort or
- 3:51fear, or sometimes they just don't know what to say.
- 3:55Honestly, what can hurt more than disease itself, right?
- 3:59But some people, a surprising few, they lean in and they show
- 4:03up. They don't flinch when you
- 4:04freeze, and they don't treat you like glass.
- 4:07They still invite you. They still listen to those
- 4:10people. You have no idea.
- 4:12You have no idea what that means to us.
- 4:15You really don't. It's amazing.
- 4:18It's amazing. I want to say something really
- 4:22clearly here. Parkinson's puts pressure on
- 4:24relationships, even the strongest ones, right?
- 4:27It creates new rules, right? New rules, rules, roles, rules,
- 4:33rules and roles. Hey, it creates, creates new
- 4:36roles. Caregiver, scheduler, symptom
- 4:39spotter, advocate. And sometimes you miss the old
- 4:42dynamics, the way things used to be, the spontaneity, the
- 4:46lightness. But if you're lucky, and I mean
- 4:49really lucky, you adapt together and you end up breathing
- 4:52together. You grow together.
- 4:54And yeah, you still laugh. It's not about going back.
- 4:58It's about finding your new rhythm, even if you're offbeat
- 5:00sometimes. And if you're watching this and
- 5:03you're loving someone with Parkinson's, you probably don't
- 5:05hear this enough. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
- 5:10Not just for what you do, but for who you are.
- 5:14But understand you don't need to fix everything.
- 5:16And you don't have to be perfect, but your presence, your
- 5:20presence that changes everything.
- 5:24And here's here's what we. Stay with us.
- 5:29We'll be right back. The links in the show notes.
- 6:12From you patience. Sometimes we freeze, sometimes
- 6:16we forget, sometimes we're Moody, and sometimes we are
- 6:21really agitated and frustrated. Be patient.
- 6:25Not just with us, but be patient with yourself too.
- 6:30We need honesty. We don't need you to sugarcoat
- 6:32it. If you're scared, overwhelmed,
- 6:34say it. Say it because we're in this
- 6:36together. It's not just us, right?
- 6:37It's you too. We're in this together.
- 6:41Boundaries. Take care of yourself.
- 6:45You don't have to pour from an empty cup.
- 6:47You can't pour from an empty cup.
- 6:49And it's OK to ask for help. In fact, we want you to.
- 6:53You know, if you heard that, you know, when you go on an airplane
- 6:56and they're giving you the instructions beforehand that
- 6:58hopefully none of you or none of us and me have never had to deal
- 7:01with. But you know, they say in case
- 7:02of an emergency and that, and they say that the, what you call
- 7:05those masks, things will drop out.
- 7:06You're the, the mask, the oxygen mask will fall from the ceiling.
- 7:09And you know how they always do with the, the stewardesses and,
- 7:11and Stewarts, they always, they're always like, you know,
- 7:13put your mask on 1st, you know, put your mask on 1st and then
- 7:16help somebody else because if you lose oxygen, you cannot help
- 7:20somebody else. So you need to help yourself
- 7:21make sure you're in a good place first and then you're in a good
- 7:24place to help us. And if you feel like you're
- 7:26burning out or you're feeling really tired, that's, you know,
- 7:29feeling tired and overwhelmed when that overwhelmed feeling is
- 7:32becoming overwhelming, overwhelming whelming, That's,
- 7:35that's your key, that's your, that's your node.
- 7:37And you know, there's as much support out there for you as
- 7:39well. There is care partner support
- 7:41groups. There are communities like this
- 7:43where there's care partners full of care partners, this
- 7:46community, you know, leave something in the comments.
- 7:48If you're having struggling, you're having a bad day or you
- 7:51know, you want some support put in the comments and others,
- 7:53others read the comments, please, because people are
- 7:55actually in the comments reaching out to others, not just
- 7:57me. I don't have all the answers.
- 7:59You know, I I have a story and I think I'm an OK storyteller and
- 8:05this is my wheelhouse. This is what I like to do and I
- 8:08have 15 years of experience with this thing.
- 8:10I didn't read all this in a book.
- 8:11I live it day-to-day. So I have stuff to give, but you
- 8:15do too. And you know, if you want to
- 8:19help read the comments and help me respond, If you have an
- 8:22answer, answer it. Please don't, don't, don't look
- 8:27at, don't just wait for me because it's not just about me.
- 8:29And I want to be really clear about that.
- 8:30This is a community. It's not priceless community.
- 8:33It's a community. If you're a care partner and
- 8:36you're having a great day or whatever, just introduce
- 8:38yourself. Tell us your story.
- 8:41Let's let's start doing life together because guess what,
- 8:43we're all in this together. We're all going through the same
- 8:45thing and we're all here and we're all here to support in
- 8:48whatever way we can. I think it's amazing.
- 8:52And someone asked the other day, my inner circle that I do and
- 8:54you'll see something on the bottom that's, I think it's
- 8:55scrolling around the bottom. That's just a group.
- 8:59That's me, that's me and my group.
- 9:01And if you want to be a part of that, please do, please join
- 9:03that. It's for care partners as well.
- 9:05It really is anybody, anybody who's dealing with Parkinson's
- 9:07in their life. And just to be clear, I don't
- 9:12make money on this channel. I don't make money on these, the
- 9:15swag and things that are that are up there because everything
- 9:18that we get, anything, anything, any dollar is someone who gives
- 9:21us a super thanks and thank you for that.
- 9:23Got our first one last week, a super thing that was amazing.
- 9:27Every single dollar, we're going to reinvest it in getting the
- 9:29word out there and getting more people involved and getting more
- 9:32people that are out there struggling.
- 9:34They don't know where to turn. We we're, we're, we're, we're,
- 9:38we're going to, we spend that on that on advocacy, on outreach
- 9:42and to reach more people. So if you give a, if you, if
- 9:45you'll, if you do give a super thanks or whatever, join the
- 9:48inner circle or buy a T-shirt or buy a mug, whatever it might be.
- 9:52You're just helping get the word out.
- 9:53You're helping supporting Parkinson's, you know, people
- 9:55that are out there in the trenches trying to get that.
- 9:58It helps kind of helps somebody, somebody helps somebody feel
- 10:01better today. So I just say it like that.
- 10:03But anyway, please introduce yourself and please let's,
- 10:06let's, let's do life together. And remember, Parkinson's might
- 10:08live in my body, but it's reach goes far beyond me.
- 10:12It touches every relationship that I have.
- 10:14It changes how I connect, how I show up and how I lean into
- 10:17others. But here's the beauty in it all.
- 10:21When Parkinson's shows up, love and show up too.
- 10:25Believe me, it does. Peace, patience, understanding,
- 10:28grace. It doesn't make it easy, but it
- 10:31does make it possible. And we don't get through this
- 10:33alone. We get through this together.
- 10:36So if this episode hits home and you've felt the ripple effect of
- 10:40Parkinson's in your relationships, drop a comment
- 10:42below if you know my story and you can go back and watch or
- 10:45listen to the other podcasts I went through, you know, a
- 10:47divorce. So I, I didn't work out.
- 10:50Someone didn't want to be with me.
- 10:52That sounds really rough, but no, So I get it.
- 10:56And Parkinson's does affect relationships.
- 10:57So comment below. Let's let's talk about it and
- 11:00don't forget like and subscribe if you can, please.
- 11:02And share this with somebody you who know is walking this path
- 11:05with you. Share it with your caregiver.
