- Nathan Hawthorne: Music came in a little earlier than I wanted today. But hey, it's great to be with you. Lean back. You know what, a lot to talk about, but the first thing we have to talk about is that we are at episode 10, a major podcasting milestone. Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Nathan Hawthorne. I'm here with Jared McEnroy. This is the KYP podcast, AKA Know Your Personnel, where we break down the biggest This is the 10th episode of KYP, AKA Know Your Personnel. Did you know that that puts us? Jarod McInroy: ⁓ yeah, got a lot to talk about today. Nathan Hawthorne: in the 90th percentile of podcasts. Most hardly make it past one. Most never start. Few make it even past three. That's considered the dead zone. Here we are at 10. So thank you. Thank you to all of our fans. And it ain't stopping anytime soon. So thank you to our fans, our millions of fans out there who are supporting the pod. We appreciate you more than you know. Thank you so much for tuning in to episode 10. We hope you tune in to 11 and 12 and 13. Jarod McInroy: Come on. And the train ain't stoppin'. Nathan Hawthorne: and best sports news bring to you our takes. Takes that maybe you don't like, maybe you do, but we're gonna bring you the honest truth. on on and on until we wrap this thing up when we are well into our 50s. So with that said, episode 10, Jared, what are we breaking down in KYP today? Jarod McInroy: We're gonna wrap up the Masters, it was a great weekend. So we'll talk about what we saw, talk a little bit about what we anticipated going into the week. We were right on a couple things, wrong on a few others. And then very minimal NFL news. And then kind of wrap it up with just a little bit of the NBA playing as we're kind of approaching this week. So we'll touch on a little bit of everything, but the bulk of it is gonna be. this last weekend. And I got my master screen on still just to make sure we send this off right. So, ⁓ you want to just start with the winner, Rory McElroy, bringing it back to back. Nathan Hawthorne: Let's get right into it. And I'm just going to interject my opinion right away. I'm not even going to give you the chance. Rory McIlroy should not have won the Masters. He should have dominated the Masters. The fact that he only won by one stroke and bogeyed 18 to do so, extremely disappointing. This guy's talking about Augusta essentially being his home course, playing a bajillion times up until Jarod McInroy: Let's hear it. Nathan Hawthorne: or the leading up to the Masters, skipping the previous events and tournaments, getting ready, talking to the chairman, how's this course going to be set up? What are the conditions going to look like? Come on, cousin. He should have won by more, but in all honesty, you got to tip the cap to Rory. ⁓ Extreme resilience throughout the tournament. A few other guys were up there and kind of faded away, which we'll get into, but impressive stuff from Rory to bounce back in that final round and particularly on the back nine. to get himself a second Masters victory going back to back. I thought it was pretty impressive. What say you? Jarod McInroy: Yeah, I mean, yeah, he did the bulk of his work on Thursday and Friday, you know, going 12 under. I think he kind of started to play a dangerous game a little bit. And that was, you could tell every time he was walking up to a green where there was a leaderboard, he was taking a look and you could tell he kind of started to play his game based on that, which in the past has kind of been his downfall. But you could tell he had that, he didn't have the added pressure of, need to get this to. I don't need this to finish the Grand Slam. It was more like, okay, what do I need to do? And ⁓ it was more clinical and that can't hurt you or it can help you. And in this case, he did what he needed to do. ⁓ I kind of talked to you about this already. He was at about 13 under while the rest of the field was sitting around 11 under and 10 under. And it really begs the question of like, you know, if If everyone knew that they just needed to get to 12 under and that was going to be the number to at least take it to a playoff, how many different people would have changed their strategy? ⁓ it was, man, I mean, he minimized mistakes. ⁓ he was attacking where it wasn't risky. He birdied the holes he needed to birdie. ⁓ and then the even par on Saturday and Sunday combined. And I'm going to use this as my segue into my issue. with Scotty and that is the slow start conversation of, oh, slow starts, know, hey Scotty, how did the weekend play out for you? You probably would have liked to do better Thursday, Friday. His Thursday, Friday was the same as Rory's Saturday, Sunday. So they were even par, both of them. So you have to get to the final number, however you do it. It doesn't matter Thursday, Friday, Saturday, none of it matters. There's a winning score at the end of the weekend and that's the number you got to get to and Roy did it, Scotty didn't. His game looked great. ⁓ think we didn't give him enough credit because we didn't see what we wanted to see in the weeks leading up to it. But I mean, we even said it last episode though, like they got a different year in the tank, man. He's especially at this course, he knows it so well. we knew he was gonna come out in fire. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. And that's the thing about Augusta. Again, you know, once you win there, you know how you have to win there and nothing exemplifies that more than Rory on the back nine in particular, two birdies on Amen corner. Incredible. Although on the par 312, it did seem like he maybe he, I don't think he was trying to be that aggressive. I think he blocked one a little bit or it was just a little late with the hands, but regardless stepped up, made the putt. And then on 16 and 17 in some Jarod McInroy: Yikes. Nathan Hawthorne: awful positions. Everyone was thinking there's no way he gets up and down here. And 18. Right? But he gets up and down, makes par, and keeps the round going and just protects his score. Right? He already knows Justin Rose is in the clubhouse, can't sneak up on him anymore. He knows that ⁓ Scottie Shuffler is in the clubhouse and he's got to stay voiding of that. He knows that Cam Young can't buy a putt. He knows Russell Henley. You know, quick shout out to Russell Henley. There's a guy who had Jarod McInroy: And 18. Wow. Nathan Hawthorne: He had every putt he wanted. You think about where you want to be on a golf course to give yourself the best look to make a birdie putt, and he just left all of them low. But shout out to him. He's a guy who's played some incredible golf over the past couple of years and could win a major. Something like the open where it's not as much a bomb and gouge, but you got to have a little bit more creativity and putt. Well, I think that he's a guy that could do it there. Anyways, going off a little bit of a tangent there, yeah, Rory again played the back non-great. Scotty only hitting 10 greens on Friday kind of killed his, his ability to ultimately win the golf tournament. ⁓ he only had four birdies on the par fives. Did he also have two Eagles? Yeah, but Roy also had 10 birdies on the par fives and that's without hitting the fairways and he's still making ways to do it. So, ⁓ at the end of the day, we talked about, you know, your par five scoring average and going out and getting the birdies that are going to be available to you at Augusta. The par fives are the biggest place to do it. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: and he just was unable to get that done. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, and honestly, this is why I'm like, I'm sick and tired of the Thursday Friday conversation because Come Sunday. It was every it was anybody's game That that's how it was He was only four shots back the lead and he did not do what he needed to do on Sunday Regardless of the three days prior he yes, he shot four under but that's not what he needed to do to win the tournament or even Take him to a playoff ⁓ in in the the final round ⁓ Let's see, I had him at 27 putts is what I ended up counting. And that means he had nine one putts, but he only had four birdies. So that's more indicative of him scrambling around, chipping a lot at holes and tapping in for pars and not giving himself good enough birdie looks. And of the birdie looks he had, we talked about it going into neck last week. Um, he's not giving himself good birdie attempts that are, you know, those 10 foot and in range, even 15 in. Feed an in range, which I mean at Augusta is few and far between you they're hard to come by but ⁓ Yeah, man, I I Think you can erase the three days. I those them that doesn't really mean much to me. It's a race I get it. It's a long race. You could have done things better this day. Yeah, exactly Yes marathon not a race exactly but When it comes down to Sunday the dogs show up Nathan Hawthorne: to Marathon. Jarod McInroy: The people who are gonna go get it done, go and get it done. And he did not get it done. So I'm tired of his excuses. I don't know if you saw that. He's chirping in the media again. And trust me, I want a root for the guy. I want a root for him so badly. But when he comes out and saying, oh, I wish Friday afternoon's conditions would have been the same as, you know, some of the conditions on the other days didn't seem fair. Just, I don't want to hear it with the fair and not fair man. Go play better. Play better. Nathan Hawthorne: I think what you talked about both Scotty and Rory kind of flip-flopping when they had their lackluster rounds ⁓ or essentially playing even par. You think about Cam Young, same deal, starts Thursday one over and Saturday one over. I'm sorry, in Sunday one over. But in between played some incredible golf. But then on Sunday, it just never seemed like he was sharp enough. I think you can say that for both him and Justin Rose. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Justin Rose obviously surged a little bit there, but then fell apart the first part of the back nine. But yeah, just two guys that when they would hit great tee shots, but when they needed that extra ounce of focus on that approach, wasn't there. More so for Justin Rose and Cam, and then Cam just couldn't buy a putt. He just could not get one to drop and you start chasing and it was so painful to watch. And while watching that broadcast, it just kind of felt Jarod McInroy: No. It was painful to ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Like what we're alluding to, nobody went out and got it. Nobody said, I'm going to go crazy deep today and get this win. I mean, it's going to be hard to do Sunday at Augusta. You can tell that they did not water the greens really at all. They let those suckers dry out. But man, I would have loved to have seen like think about Scottie's putt on 17. That thing was drip. Also, how awesome was that camera angle? They just give it to you straight downhill. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah, that was pretty cool. Nathan Hawthorne: And you're thinking this thing's got to stop short, right? And it just keeps inching its way to the hole and just wiggled its way out. ⁓ ma'am, always delivers in terms of entertainment, the storylines, reporters asking terrible questions. That was hilarious, though. And it was a bad question. It was a bad question. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah, that was, yeah. It was, but that's exactly what I mean, man. Him in the media these days, get him away from a microphone when he's still in the heat of the moment. I can't do it because it's really not looking good. ⁓ But. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, what are you, how are you to have done, you know, what you're gonna do? That was a terrible question. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. To touch on Cam Young a little bit too. Yeah. mean, dude, his, his putts weren't even bad though. If you, if you go back and watch the round, like he was rolling the rock, it just, they weren't dropping and all you can do. I mean, we, we all know we all, we all play golf. We know how it is. You pick a line, you commit to it, you hit it and you try and match the speed in the line and Either you get them both right and it goes in or you get them both wrong and it goes in. Those are the only two options. And some days they just aren't falling. He had 32 putts, ⁓ only four one putts on the whole day. And that's tough. And also not to mention he hit 13 greens in rake. So like that's painful, man. Like that shows how many opportunities he had at birdie and yeah, some of his shots were. in terms of proximity to the whole war a little bit further than he probably wanted but With Justin Rose is kind of it was a little different of a story his his whole game seemed out of whack like like Cam didn't seem like sharp sharp But like he was still sticking around ⁓ Justin looked really good and then all of a sudden he just was really bad. I don't know what happened ⁓ or what if it was some gotten to his head or what but ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jarod McInroy: I think he was, he was what, uh, either 10 or 11 under, um, on 13 has an Eagle look, three putts for par. And that's really kind of where everything turned for him. And all of a sudden he wasn't in the running anymore. Nathan Hawthorne: Well, right, and that's after he bogeyed 11 and 12. 11, he's in prime position, flares it out right out of nowhere, and then can't get up and down. And initially you're thinking, ⁓ my gosh, attack mode, he's actually making a charge here. And then 13, absolute, what did he do on 13? Did he ⁓ send it long, I think? Send it, yeah, he sent it long and left, and then he duffed his chip shot. Jarod McInroy: Right. Mm-hmm. No he- ⁓ yeah, you're talking about 12. Yeah, yep. Nathan Hawthorne: 12 that I flip flop on. Yeah. Yep. There we go. Duffs. Yeah. Duff the chip shot. And you're just like, what? Where did that come from? You know, just those and you know, and like you're talking about with the putts matching the line and speed, you know, in golf, you have to have focused the entire way through this wing, any microsecond of losing that focus, and you're going to have a bad shot. And that's what looked like happened completely uncharacteristic for a guy like Justin Rose, whose routine is just so Jarod McInroy: Yowz. Nathan Hawthorne: dialed in all the time almost to a point where I can't stand watching it. So that was very strange. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, it's exactly that. And the shot he hit on 13 was where I was like, okay, like maybe he's back. It was just a minor lapse. And again, on this golf course, everybody has a minor lapse here and there. Like you see it through everybody's around. Rory doubled, ⁓ was it par three sixth? ⁓ Or which hole was it? forget. But yeah, you're going to have your ebbs and flows of the round. He hits the shot on 13 and I'm like, okay, it was just a. couple bad holes, he's gonna dial it back in and then he just didn't. So yeah, I feel so bad for a man every time we watch him go out and just fire at this course and he can't get it done and he's an easy guy to root for. It's tough. Nathan Hawthorne: Was that, what was the one on broadcast that it looked like he shanked it, but he actually, absolutely, but he just, but he absolutely stuck it. Just sitting there watching it, you're like, complete collapse inbound. Is that the one, is that the one he three-putted? I think it might've been. Jarod McInroy: It's just the rogue tracer Yeah. Yeah, yeah, it was it was on 13. He had around the corner. He hit a nice little tight draw It was probably more aggressive than he wanted. But yeah, the tracer just takes it far out, right? We're all like holding our heads like oh no, and then it just shows the pin and the ball landing right next to it and bouncing out But hey, they can't get it. All right technology is only so good Nathan Hawthorne: Can we also talk about Rory, I think it was 15, kind of fatting that wedge and getting the only bounce forward I've ever seen off that side hill and not being in the water? I cannot believe that. And you want to tell me Augusta's not moving some sort of magnet underneath the greens? Scotty and Cameron burning edges all day, but Rory gets the bounce of the golf gods? Come on. Jarod McInroy: Well, if you're gonna... You and I both know if you faddle wedge, it takes spin off. If that thing was pure to that same distance, that thing is spinning off the face of the earth. So he caught a good break. Nathan Hawthorne: But still! But I think even if you flush that one, he might have ripped that one off the back of the green. Anyways, that was just, you thought for sure that was water. You already started to feel for him. I was celebrating, whatever. And Sam Burns, don't forget about him, disappointing. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, that was... He got a really good break. I eat Nathan Hawthorne: Just a lot of horses were up there. Guys that you're like, all right, they can go out and get this and a little bit disappointing. Jarod McInroy: I didn't really have much faith in him really like pulling it out. It was more just like, I was excited to see him back in that form. And hopefully this is Sam. I mean, he's been playing pretty decent though. Last year he did pretty well, but this is kind of ⁓ proof that he's sticking around for a little bit longer. And he's probably a name that I could see ⁓ at some of these other courses going out and competing. for majors like Arana Mink I think fits his game a lot. Yeah, we'll see. But he's definitely a name to watch out for moving forward. But yeah, I wasn't convinced about him. Hua Tong Li never really had a shot. Talk about a blunder on 13. He's just in the azaleas. No one can find him. Looking for his ball for 30 minutes. Nathan Hawthorne: Absolutely. What was that? At that point, just take the lost ball and keep it moving. don't honestly, honestly, I don't even know what happened because the broadcast certainly did not show it and did not care to show it. haven't even I haven't seen a replay. I don't know if Augusta has that whole sequence on just lock and key. It's things like we're not going to let people see this part of the property. You were never supposed to see it. Jarod McInroy: and then he puts it into the water. Yeah. ⁓ they do. Nathan Hawthorne: You're never supposed to explore up here. I don't know what's going on, but I cannot find that clip. I'm going to have to search a little harder. Jarod McInroy: They're not in the business of embarrassing golfers, so they're like, let's not show this, but they had to show them putting it in the water. That was pretty tough. Nathan Hawthorne: Last thing, speaking of not showing, what was going on on 18? With with Rory and can't where were their golf balls? Rory hits that Rory hits that high draw. Camera doesn't know where it finished. It's looking around. We don't know where it's finished. Announcers don't know where it's finished. Cam Young hits one. It looks it seems like he pulled it. Yeah, there are pro shots. Where's the where's the ball? Nobody's mentioning it. There's no camera zooming in. They finally find a ball in the bunker. Jarod McInroy: in regards to. ⁓ yeah ⁓ there are approaches. Nathan Hawthorne: They don't say whose it is. I'm like, what's going on? Can somebody tell me what the stakes are? Who's getting up and down from this bunker? Who knows where? I don't know. Also, if I'm Cam, I would have been pretty upset about that camera tower, because just based off of where he was hitting from behind that tree, it felt like it was in his eyeline. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah, it was there but like it wasn't it wasn't there but like it was there it had to have been in his head a little bit Nathan Hawthorne: It was there, like, absolutely. Because it feels like, hey, like if I want to start something out to the right, maybe I don't have enough space to do it. Not say that's obviously not why he didn't win, but I just thought that was so strange when he was setting up to hit that shot. I'm like, I just said, hey, pause this whole tournament. Take that thing down. Tear it down. Jarod McInroy: Roy's approach on 18 though, I don't know if there's any other golfer in the world where the patrons would have felt safe standing where they were, knowing that he was about to try and bend this ball 90 degrees around that tree line. They've seen him do it a hundred times. So they're like, okay, we'll stand here comfortably, not expect to take a golf ball to the forehead. But ⁓ yeah, it was certainly an odd finish. Nathan Hawthorne: Bend it like Beckham. Yeah. Jarod McInroy: and things got really shaky there for a minute that but that's what i'm saying like if somebody would have just if if scotty would have made one more putt if cam young would have had two putts drop two more putts drop anybody got to that 12 under number i think rory would have been sweating that situation even harder than he already was like in it would have been interesting to see what his approach would have been knowing he needed hard to win the tournament rather than bogey. ⁓ But knowing that double bogey would have lost him the tournament, that's where I'm like, if somebody would have just came in that 12 under number, I would have made things far different. But we are. Nathan Hawthorne: I think it would have changed a lot. Yeah, and we didn't even talk about Cam Young bird or not birding bogeying six, seven and nine to close the front. I mean, he's got to be kicking himself because he's he's probably sitting there thinking because Rory had fallen off at that point. It looked like Roy was out of the game. Headcase done gone. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Man, can only talk about it so much, Jarod McInroy: That's but that's that's a bit of the the ebbs and flows we were we were talking about with with Augusta's that was his his bit where he just he kind of like you're still playing the course at ⁓ At the end of the day like it's it's still you versus Augusta. So he he kind of had a Lapse in focus for a minute and then I mean he fired off. It was a straight-up even par on the back, right? Like ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Really gritty. Really gritty. Jarod McInroy: God, it's tough, man. It was. ⁓ Okay, sweet. We made a few ⁓ guesses last week going into the weekend and our picks were close. I mean, you had Cam Young and he was right there all the way till the end of it. ⁓ Tommy, you know, he was there. He was right there. He was a lingering. Nathan Hawthorne: He was right there, him, Jason Day, Patrick Reed. I know you love Patrick Reed, but they were link. Jarod McInroy: Hey, you weren't wrong. You weren't wrong about the Patrick Reed pick. I was not happy to see his name up there, but you weren't wrong about it. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: I was not wrong. What I did learn about Patrick Reed this week is he gets a lot of credit for being a Georgia Bulldog. He was kicked off the team for cheating, alcohol, not sure exactly what it was. There was a number of reasons. And then he went to Augusta University with his home course being Augusta National or Augusta State, whatever it was. Thought that was pretty interesting. No wonder he loves it out there. Between him and Rory, I'm not sure who's played it more at this point. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, he does. But, needless to say, we had a little segment last week where I asked you about the second place finishers of, you know, previous tournaments and I said if we look at that list, they're all gonna be up there on the big board and sure enough, Xander was up there, Colin was up there, Brooks had a good weekend, all in all a good weekend, Ludwig did okay, it was kind of ho-humming around. Shane Lowry, Max Homme even had a good weekend. But that's what I'm saying. The whole point of all of this is to say when it comes to Augusta, you have to get some plays under your belt. And I think this was a good weekend for a lot of people. Not for Bryson DeChambeau. Chris Goddard, however, played a lot better than I thought he would. And man, I think he's gonna stick around. I think the guy's game is sharp. I knew he never had a chance to win it or compete to really win it, but ⁓ the guy's game is sharp. And if we're looking at this young core that the US has, has to offer moving forward, mean, Cam Young and Chris are kind of the two names that are really gonna, gonna bring this thing home for us. So I'm excited. Nathan Hawthorne: All right. Who wins Masters? The Masters in 2027. Way too early winner. Who's got it next year? Jarod McInroy: ⁓ I'm not sure if you saw what Fred Couples had to say About how he doesn't think that Roy's ever losing this thing again I mean like if His odds I think are gonna be in the negative next year come April I think he's gonna have minus odds to win the damn thing ⁓ but with that being said if I'm ⁓ taking Rory then obviously I Do want to make one? flat out claim. think in the next 10 years, I see Scottie winning one, certainly maybe two more green jackets. I think he is going to comfortably do that. So when that comes, I don't know, maybe it's sooner than later. Maybe he has his revenge next year. ⁓ I Cam Young is going to come back hungry. I don't think he's going anywhere. if I'm... This was a great week of experience for him. It was a great time to learn and it was a great time to play with somebody who has now gone out and won it twice in a final round and compete against him. yeah, give me Cam Young next year. He's going to be right back where he left off. Nathan Hawthorne: I like that pick. I love that and I love in Fred couples mentioned it. A lot of people have mentioned it now. The way that they have quote unquote Tiger proofed the course, right? They've made the holes longer. They've changed a few things around, but large in part, those guys who aren't going to be punished for missing the fairway for being in the second cut, but you're 40 yards further than everyone else hitting less club in. Those are the guys that are going to have a good chance to win. if they have a good week driving the golf ball in terms of distance and not being too out of control. A guy that I think as they stay on tour a little bit longer and is going to get sharper that might have a chance to do it next year. And with the new edition of the Spider in his bag, maybe he goes back to a blade we don't know. Brooks Kepka I truly think has a chance to win at Augusta next year. He's a guy who's hung around and been around in multiple times at the Masters. And if you're looking for a guy who wants to sharpen his game, Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: who wants to start closing in on his own version of the slam, right? He's got to win at Augusta. And I think he's going to start taking that extremely serious between that and the open. think he's got a good chance to win it. ⁓ His putting he's obviously needs to get figured out, but he's driving the golf ball. Well, his approach game is strong and it's just a matter of time before he gets that sharpness. Jarod McInroy: I know if he, think he might win one of these, one of the other majors coming up. I think the writings on the wall with, with Scotty finishing out his grand slam grabbing the open or the U S open rather. Um, I don't know if you've seen this whole storyline they've already put together. It's on the Sunday is going to be father's day. It's Scotty's 30th birthday. It's Scotty's 30th birthday on that Sunday. And that would be his grand slam. Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ my gosh. Jarod McInroy: The writings on the walls, we all know this is a business. Scottie's gonna be winning the US Open. I'm putting every dollar I have on it because these stories write themselves. give me, before we get into that, I will just wrap up your Brooks take. I like him at the PGA Championship. That's always a tournament. And I know I said, you know, there's a few names we'll be looking for. Be looking for, Brooks said. Nathan Hawthorne: I'm gonna, I like that. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ at Arana mink for a real shot at bringing it home for his newest major. Nathan Hawthorne: For his fourth, his fourth PGA championship, that'd be impressive. I like that for Scottie. I also like Cam Young getting the US Open. It's at Shinnecock. It's up in New York where a boy Cam Young is from. I like it. I like it a lot. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, hey, and that could be his that could be his major that could be his first that first dominion really kickstart this thing for him, but Man, we know we know how these these leagues are with their their storylines. I Don't know Nathan Hawthorne: There it- I love but I do love the way they write them, keeps me watching TV. Let's pop into some NFL news. We've talked to Masters to Death already here. The Eagles have acquired Dontavion Wicks from the Green Bay Packers. You mentioned that you've got an opinion on this. I wanna hear your take on this. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ ⁓ huh. Yeah, let's do it. Mm-hmm. I feel as though a lot of the time when people are ⁓ making big moves like this, know, they go and get a Wix to add to a receiver room that they already have. AJ Brown they already have. Devante Smith they already have. ⁓ Hollywood Brown now that they just acquired. I believe they got one other person, I can't remember. I was looking at it earlier, but needless to say. When a team's making big moves like this, big aggressive moves, they go and get Dontavian wicks to round out the room, I feel like fans fall in love with the idea that they're bolstering up this incredible ⁓ team, this aggressive team, they're gonna go out and get it. Let's not forget that AJ Brown was upset with this team for not getting targets. I think AJ Brown's on the move. I think this is more the Eagles are... fixing a problem that they know they're about to have because they know he's on his way out. So and I thought the same thing. I fell victim to this with Jalen Waddle. We go and we get Malik Willis and I'm like, we have a couple weeks where we're like, ⁓ all of a sudden Malik or Jalen Waddle has someone to throw in the ball. And I'm like, sweet, our team actually doesn't look that bad. Next thing you know, Jalen Waddle is out the door. He's gone. He's in Denver. So. I think it's a bit of the same of like you fall in love with this idea of, my God, they really are rounding out the roster. Things are looking good. But I think it's more, they're getting ahead of a problem they know they're about to have and draft capital doesn't mean much to them right now because they know they're going to get assets back for AJ Brown. So I think this is a sign that proves AJ Brown's out the door and he's going to be gone by draft day. That's my take. Nathan Hawthorne: You know, I don't disagree with that. I don't disagree with that. think Dontavia and Wicks is another kind of big bodied wide receiver. Now he's played in that Packers system. You kind of have to play everywhere. They move you around based on the formations and what you need. So I believe that Sean Mannion is probably looking to do something similar. you bring in another kind of bigger bodied guy like Dontavian Wicks. DaVontae Smith would absolutely be your number one. Bring in your Hollywood Brown. You get a speedster. I want to say it was Elijah Moore was the additional pickup that they had. A guy who's not necessarily game breaking, but a guy that Jarod McInroy: Yes, exactly. Yep. Nathan Hawthorne: Is it you like him on the field? He's he's shown bursts of talent and ability throughout his time, whether that was with the Bills or whether that with that or whether that was with the Browns. So ⁓ I like what they're doing again. They're bolstering that wide receiver room, but it does look like A.J. Brown is going to be on the move if he's not on the move and he wants more targets. Maybe you're looking at a more air raid type offense with Sean Mannion. I don't think that's going to be the case. based off of his coaching history and having Saquon Barkley and that massive offensive line that they have, you you're going to want to lean on your horse. But if there was ever a year to kind of taper back the touches for Saquon Barkley to make sure he can finish the end of his contract, maybe this is a year and maybe you start slinging it around the rock. But again, you got Jalen Hurts. And since that shoulder injury and since the Super Bowl loss, he just hasn't thrown the football the same way. I don't know what to make of it, but yeah. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: rounding it out AJ Brown on the move. Jarod McInroy: When have we seen one of these D.Va wide receivers be the one that changes what the team's plans are moving forward? When have we seen them come in and be like, hey, I want this to happen and then be like, okay, you know what? Sure, here you go. Keys to the castle. No one's doing that. They're gone a week and a half later. Every single time it happens. We've seen it. Look at DK Metcalf. They shipped him over to Pittsburgh and now he doesn't have a ring. That's what happens when you when you sit there and you freak out about not getting targets what it's It and I think it's also going to be good for the eagles to get that out of their locker room And it's not saying anything bad about aj brown himself. It's just this is in this situation for him sometimes Two sides just you know, it's better for both of them to move on from each other so maybe aj brown goes into a new system where he gets exactly what he's looking for and He's a high volume guy. He's one of the best receivers in the league. We've seen it when he does get the volume. ⁓ So yeah, I mean, we don't know where that will be. like it's hard because one of the best fits form is in his own division. I think if he was to go to Washington and go opposite of Terry McLaurin, think I think that'd be a really good spot for him with Jayden Daniels coming back. But just like a team like that. where he can really flourish, be your, unquote, number one guy. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see where he goes and what they get for him at this point. Because I feel like the more you stick around and the more you hang out in the trade block is when things start to go downhill real quick. Nathan Hawthorne: The- Yeah, you start to lose your leverage. And as soon as you start trying to shop somebody quietly, know, word gets out. You you start losing the offers that had the high value. People start trying to nickel and dime you. All of a sudden, you've got them on your roster again. And you know, Howie Roseman is not going to take a bad deal just to get rid of somebody. If he has to have AJ Brown for another year, he's like, yeah, you're going to play. And if you don't want to play, whatever. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, especially with draft day, especially with draft day lingering, like these picks have numbers to them now. So the value is, set in stone. Like a first round pick in the future. You don't know where that pick's going to land. All of these picks now have value. ⁓ yeah, it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting. But yeah, like you said, how he's, he's, he's locked in. He's not one who's been known to fold. Nathan Hawthorne: Not one bit. Speaking of the draft, I wanted to I wanted to quiz your draft knowledge here. I wanted to quiz your draft knowledge. You came at me with the master's question. It was a shot in my heart because it said, hey, he made me feel like a casual, which a large part for golf. You could argue I'm more casual than I am intelligent. Right. But if you show me the picture of that master's dinner. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ ⁓ no, not draft knowledge. So. Nathan Hawthorne: I can probably name about 70, 80 % of the winners out there because nobody remembers second place. So here today, we're going to ask you to remember second place. We've got the last 10 drafts. There's a quarterback that went number one overall, and there is a quarterback who went number two, not number two overall, but the second quarterback take in the draft. So George, who was, wow, let me reset this question. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ no. Just number second pick. Nathan Hawthorne: Who is the number? Wow. Let me reset this question again. Jarod McInroy: Get it out pal, let's go. Let's do this thing, I'm ready. Nathan Hawthorne: who in the last 10 drafts was the second quarterback taken off the board. Bonus points, obviously, if you can name the number one quarterback taken off the board. You can go in any order. Jarod McInroy: in the last 10 years? Okay, I'll tell you what, I'll give it a run, but if there might come a time where I'm gonna need you to tell me who number one was, or at least the team picking or something, I might need a couple hints, but I think I can ring off a few. ⁓ So let's see, last year was... Nathan Hawthorne: Last 10 drafts. That's fair. Absolutely. Yep. Jarod McInroy: I'm trying to think of who was even number one last year. Nathan Hawthorne: Tennessee Titans. Jarod McInroy: Oh, Cam Warr, yeah, so Cam Warr was number one, which means number two, was it Tyler Schuck? Or was he third? Nathan Hawthorne: It was not Tyler's truck. he would have been third or fourth off the board. Jarod McInroy: I feel like I'm missing a very clear one here. Give me the team and I'll tell you Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, he is currently a starter in the NFL. He did earn the job. Big city. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ Jackson Dart duh obviously got it. Okay two years ago. Then we're taking it back to ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Jackson dart correct. There we go 2024 class was a Heisman winner. Jarod McInroy: The number two pick was a husband winner. Nathan Hawthorne: Number two pick was the Heisman winner. Jarod McInroy: Okay. Nathan Hawthorne: Well, actually the number two pick and the number one pick were Heisman winners. Jarod McInroy: Wow. I'm really just blinking on who was even the first guy. I feel like if you tell me the first guy in each of these, then I can start wringing them off. Nathan Hawthorne: Let's do that. Caleb Williams was the first quarterback off the board. Jarod McInroy: was first off. god, who was in that draft class? Bro, I'm blinking! ⁓ on. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Also, also a starter. Jarod McInroy: Yes, so Caleb Williams draft class was going down the list in my head. It was bears, then it was... out. Nathan Hawthorne: the nation's capital. Jarod McInroy: Jaden Daniels. God, bro. See, this is what I mean. You tell me just something then I know, but I'm having trouble organizing the years because I'm trying to think of in order of... I need something in front of me. Okay, next up, we got 2023. Let's ring them quick. Nathan Hawthorne: change anus. Yeah. It's kind of hard to organize the years because I know it's there. Yep. 2023 number one overall was Bryce Young. Jarod McInroy: Bryce Young's here and who's the team of the person one second. Nathan Hawthorne: Houston Texans. The team, giving away the team might be too obvious. Jarod McInroy: Okay. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: But who is it? Jarod McInroy: Bryce Young went one, CJ Stroud went number two. You're second off the board. Nathan Hawthorne: 2022, this was a horrible year, if you remember this draft class, arguably worse than this year. Yeah, Kenny Pickett was the first off the board. Who was number two? It was not Malik Willis. Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. This was the Kenny Pickett one. malequilus. What? Nathan Hawthorne: There was another quarterback who went a little bit later to a southern team. Southern bird team. Jarod McInroy: Southern Bird Team? Well that would be the Arizona Cardinals. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Southeastern Bird Team. Jarod McInroy: southeastern ⁓ the falcons who went to the falcons that year ⁓ so we got kenny picket was and then the falcons took damn is this like a gettable name Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Remember that was the year that, remember this was a year where a surprise team in a college football playoff, no, there was a surprise team in the college football playoff. Jarod McInroy: ⁓ I know, I know, I got it. Spencer Radler. Wait. Or not Spencer, rather. What's the name I have in my head? No, ⁓ same type of beat as Spencer Adler though. What's his name? It starts with a D. You know what I'm talking about. Desmond Ritter. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, there we go. Same type beat. Him and Spencer Adler might be the same, but it's probably the same. Okay. Yep, yep, yep. Nathan Hawthorne: Kind of. ⁓ Desmond Ritter, there it is. Absolutely. Okay. 20 and 2021 number one was Trevor Lawrence and the second quarterback off the board tricked everybody with his pro day. He made one brilliant throw and everybody thought this is a guy. That's the one. 2020. You'll know this one. Second quarterback taken off the board. 2020. Jarod McInroy: Zach Wilson. You mean 2018? Are we at 2020 now? Nathan Hawthorne: We're at 2020. We 2021, we are now at 2020. Jarod McInroy: Okay, that math that math checks out 2020 the second quarterback would be Nathan Hawthorne: Joe Burrow was the first. Jarod McInroy: And that means number two to Joe Burrow. It wasn't Tua, because Tua was six. Was he, there was no one between him and six, it's Tua? Nathan Hawthorne: It's tour. Jarod McInroy: Why did I think there was someone else that was in that top? Wow, we suck, bro. We suck at drafting. Justin Herbert was right after him too. Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: Cause cause remember Justin. Yeah, Justin Herbert was right there. Yeah. And 2019 Kyler Murray Heisman winner. The following guy went to another New York team. Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. ⁓ Kyler Murray's here went to another New York team, which means that it was Josh Allen to the bills or no, no, he was further back. or a further pick back. ⁓ Nathan Hawthorne: Mm-mm. Jarod McInroy: Tyler Murray is here. Nathan Hawthorne: Big body guy, athletic. Brian Dayball tried his best to save him. Jarod McInroy: New York team. I got it, Danny Dimes. Yeah. Another, yeah, hey, big guy. Nathan Hawthorne: Danny Dimes, Danny Dimes. And we'll go one more here, because this one I think is interesting. The rest aren't really that interesting. We're going to back it all the way up to 2015. OK, we're going to go all the way there. First, yeah, you got it. that sucker up quick. Jarod McInroy: Okay. Marcus Mariota. I already knew it. I got a lot of those ones like in the chamber ready to go. That's a class where it was Jamus number one overall. Just out of curiosity. Yeah, go ahead and. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, in those prime college years, yeah. And then in 2018, yeah, 2018 Baker Mayfield was number one overall. Any quick guesses on number two? Jarod McInroy: Yes, that was the year that Lamar went to 30, so he was not it. It was Baker number one and... ⁓ was it Sam Darnold? Yeah, okay, got it. Nathan Hawthorne: newly minted super bowl champion Sam Darnold and then 2017 Mitchell Trubisky went what would that been an eight or nine I believe and then that was followed by who Jarod McInroy: Mm-hmm. Yep. I remember this one all too well. That's a good question. I'm gonna need the team and I'll be able to tell you. Nathan Hawthorne: All right, we're going to just ignore that you need the team to know who was drafted after Mitchell Trubisky. Jarod McInroy: I don't remember, ⁓ Pat Mahomes. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, I always forget that that was the same class, bro. I always forget that that's the same class. Nathan Hawthorne: There it is. I was like, what? It feels weird. then 2016 you had these are both two big body pocket guys. One had a career revival, one did not. Jared Goff was number one overall and one off the board. And then we had Hoo-Woo at number two. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yes, was Jared Goff at one and it was. Nathan Hawthorne: should have been Super Bowl champion. They built a statue of the other guy instead of him. Jarod McInroy: Carson ones. Nathan Hawthorne: Carson Wentz. And that wraps up the segment, Nobody Knows Second Place. I think that should be a segment name. Our staple segment, Nobody Knows Second Place. We're gonna come up with the most... Jarod McInroy: Hey, I knew them all. just, was organizing. If I had some sort of graphic in front of me, then yes, maybe, but ⁓ yeah. You're gonna remember who took second place at this year's Masters. Nathan Hawthorne: It is hard. I like that segment idea. I'm gonna remember who took third place. That's for sure. There's like 900 dudes that took third place I wonder how they split. I actually wonder how they split up all that money Jarod McInroy: Yeah. What do mean? Nathan Hawthorne: So you have like the, you have your earnings, right, for the purse. But then when you have a bunch of guys tied for third, it affects how much third place gets and then how much everyone else underneath gets. So I wonder what the payout was for third place this year is essentially what I'm asking. Jarod McInroy: Right. Mm-hmm. Yeah, there's a, yeah, there's a, I believe there's just a tiered list based on percentiles and every there's a whole math system to this. want to say they won like a good, they won a good chunk of change, a few hundred grand at least. I want to say 500 grand. Nathan Hawthorne: Let see here. Jarod McInroy: because I was looking at it earlier and the main reason I was looking at it was I wanted to know, they won a million dollars. Nathan Hawthorne: Two, three, got 300, yeah. Jarod McInroy: Yep. It won a million bucks. ⁓ the, the reason I was looking at the purse really hard earlier was cause I wanted to know what would have happened if how Tong Li would have just shot even on the day, how much money he lost. ⁓ God, was it a lot of money, man? The poor guy. He lost a lot of money. Yeah. I know I felt terrible, but yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: That hurts your, yeah. Like $900,000. Or more. Or more. That is brutal. I mean, shout out to Charles Schwartzel, you know, earning a cool 52,000 just for making the cut. What a great week. You get to go play an awesome golf course, rake in 52 racks, probably just pays for everything he needed for the month, but that's fine. He's got enough money at this point. He's won enough on tour. Jarod McInroy: Here we are. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Okay, NBA. We're just going to very quickly breeze through this. We're getting ready for the playoffs. I think we finally have some matchups locked in. ⁓ the play-in should be exciting for us. We finally get to watch, you can't call it playoff basketball in Portland, but, ⁓ if they win tomorrow, it's playoff basketball. Nathan Hawthorne: And it's been a long time since the Blazers have even sniffed being in playoff basketball. Things went downhill tragically. So as a fan, it feels good. It's a surprising end to the season. ⁓ You know that some guys are working hard as the new ownership starts to come in next year. They're working hard to earn their jobs and you can see it. But again, I find the play in so interesting because seven and eight play for the right for the seven seed to go get Molly walked by or I'm sorry. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Nathan Hawthorne: for the, yeah, for the seventh seed, you go get Molly Watt by the two seed, the Spurs. And then if you lose that game, then the winner of the nine, 10 game comes to play you. And then you play for the right to go get clapped by the Thunder, at least in the Western Conference. Like that is tough. That is tough in the Western Conference. So Clippers, Warriors at the nine, 10 game, Suns, Blazers at the seven, eight. Over to the East side. Jarod McInroy: Anything can happen. Anything can happen in the playoffs, Nathan Hawthorne: You've got the Hornets and the Heat at your 9-10 game. And then you've got the Sixers and the Magic at your 7-8 game. If I'm the Celtics, I don't want to match up with the Magic whatsoever. Magic had a tough close to the season, but they're not a bad ball club. They're not a bad ball club. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah, I think it's pretty much at that point, ⁓ just one of the games. It's going to be tough because Charlotte is playing really well also. I think they'll stomp Miami and then whoever loses that Philadelphia or Orlando game will be in a bloodbath with Charlotte. Dude, they're playing insane right now. yeah, we'll see there. On the Western side of things, talking about the teams that are solidified. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah. Jarod McInroy: Lakers at Lakers in Houston is going to be a great series. ⁓ And then in Denver and Minnesota, I like both of those. Those are those are tough first round matchups, man. Nathan Hawthorne: Those are the only two matchups I actually identified as I'll sit down and watch those. Those are going to be really, really good. And I love that LeBron and Ime Udoka actively hate each other. There's absolutely no love in that relationship. And then you've got Kevin Durant and what he's trying to do with this young buck of a Houston Rockets roster against the Lakers and they're kind of aging, struggling team. You got Luca Reed, everybody's all injured. It's going to be interesting. Jarod McInroy: Yeah, ⁓ yeah. If the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night at 7pm Pacific, you heard it here first, they will give San Antonio fits. I don't know if they actually have a chance at winning, but I think it could be a six game series. I don't hate our team, and maybe it's just me being a homer, and it is what it is, but you go down the list. I like our roster, we're finally healthy, this is the first time and maybe our downfall is gonna be we haven't had enough time to play all together. ⁓ But, Shaden's back, ⁓ Scoot's back and he's been playing pretty well. He hasn't moved me, but he's playing well enough and we seem to be in some sort of groove. ⁓ If we can finish a game, that will be the big question mark because... ⁓ We had a fully healthy Denver team who was needing to win games to get to the three seed and we had them on the ropes. We were up by 20 at one point and came down the stretch, lost the game, fumbled the bag, taking bad shots, kind of got out of our game, started playing theirs a little bit, whatever. ⁓ Don't sleep on us against the Spurs. That'll be a series you will tune into as well. Nathan Hawthorne: I just, I just, I'm concerned about our offense and I love Denny and I love, I love Jeremy Grant if he's healthy. I just, I don't feel like we have enough consistent offense and we don't have a playoff type basketball, go get a bucket guy. As much as I, as much as I love Denny, we just don't have. Jarod McInroy: Well, Denny's that guy, but the problem is you need people around you. Nathan Hawthorne: But he's not, yeah, but he's, I don't think he's playoff basketball, the guy. There's regular season guys. I don't think he's playoff basketball. You know, I'm gonna put this team on my back and score 14, 15 in one quarter and keep us in it and maybe stretch this thing out. I don't think he's got that kind of gas in the tank. That's no disrespect. I hope he does. I want him to, you know I want him to. I would love for him to have it, but I'm just concerned. And then on the east side. Jarod McInroy: Alright. Well, ten of those points will be free throws, but he can do it. Nathan Hawthorne: And then on the east side of the bracket though, you want me to tune into Kaz Raptors? Next Hawks. I ain't doing it and it's not it's not a east-west thing. It's There's nothing exciting about that sleeper series Jarod McInroy: I won't. Nope, I got stuff to do. Even looking at like even looking at the second round, let's assume chalk right in the first round. Let's assume one, two, three, four all win. That leaves us with Boston, New York, great series. I'm not as sold on Boston and I think New York will, I think New York's gonna hit the postseason and do what they did last year and start to really roll. They have their question marks obviously, but ⁓ Detroit and Cleveland will be a great series. ⁓ But to me it looks like another path for New York to really make a run. That's all I see in the East and maybe I'm wrong. Nathan Hawthorne: ⁓ That Boston team that Boston team is disgusting dude, and they're deep they did have they did more than half this year without Jason Tatum and They got blessed almost with Jason Tatum having that injury because more of the roster got to sort itself out and kind of figure the flow Jason Tatum didn't come in and hurt the flow They just kept flowing around it. I think that's scary. I think that that Jarod McInroy: ⁓ I'm not moved. Nathan Hawthorne: There, I think we're gonna see a Thunder Celtics NBA Finals, if you had to ask me today. Jarod McInroy: Well, I'm not asking you today because I'm not buying it. But, nope, I'm not buying it. That's one team that, and this can be a perfect clip for you if it doesn't work out this way, but if I had to put my money on one team not making it, it's gonna be Boston. Not moved. However, the other side of the, it can really be anybody from the West. Like I said, that Lakers Rocket series, Nathan Hawthorne: Will you ask me tomorrow? Jarod McInroy: will be fun to watch. I think they're the worst of the four teams. If we're talking again, Chalk, let's say OKC, San Antonio and Denver. I think the winner of the four or five is going to be the worst of the four. And it's probably going to be. I don't know if San Antonio has what it takes to finish off the run and make it to the finals, but OKC is just so good, man. And they did it last year. So that's where I'm like some of the inexperience with San Antonio a lot of the what ifs ⁓ I don't know if that's really gonna play into how they match up against Denver and Denver is another team that's been around so I think if their second round matchup if they would have been the one seed and they would have been the team that had to play against like a gritty series against the Lakers or I think that would have given them some scars and they would have came out winners in that series. But I think falling to the two seed and having to play against Denver will be ultimately their downfall. Nathan Hawthorne: Yeah, I don't I don't think San Antonio has enough scars and they haven't nobody on that team really has had to make a deep playoff run in how many years now. So you're asking guys like Wimby, like Seth Castle, like Harper, who just they haven't had to go deep in the playoffs and dudes run out of gas. We saw it with Anthony Edwards, a guy you thought who was going to will this team to an NBA finals win. And he just couldn't like you run out of gas. And again, you're talking about going against that physical nuggets team who has the pedigree and experience. Good luck. And it's not because the talent's not there, but like you're talking about that strength and that grit to win playoff basketball. It's different. It's a different kind of finesse. It's a different kind of strength. Jarod McInroy: Yeah. Yeah. But I'll tell you what, we'll fast forward. I'll watch the second round and on probably. I like a lot of these matchups. We'll see. And the refs just gotta swallow their whistle a little bit, I think that's honestly one of the biggest things. If this is gonna be an entertaining playoffs for us, similar to last year, they started to swallow the whistle a little bit and it became watchable. ⁓ I think my favorite player to watch is Jalen Brunson and he gets a lot of fouls called for him. So ⁓ when he really is like going for the bump in the bucket, they're not giving him the calls like, and he starts, he starts making some crazy shots. Like that's, that's when it gets exciting. Yeah, that's all I got. Let's go. Trailblazers, they're going to beat the Spurs. Shock the world. You heard it here first. Nathan Hawthorne: It would! It is. Let's go. Let's go Blazers, baby. You heard it here first. You heard it here. You heard it here second. I'm going to go ahead and hop on that bandwagon. Go Zurs, baby. Not the bandwagon, but the bandwagon of they've got a chance to beat San Antonio. I'm drinking the Kool-Aid. Let's go to a game. Let's go to a game. Jarod McInroy: Let's go. If they're playing San Antonio, I will. If they're playing Oklahoma City, I absolutely will not. We will not win a single game. There'll be four games and we're out. That is not a team we match up with. Nathan Hawthorne: But don't you but isn't isn't isn't chat your favorite player? Jarod McInroy: No, absolutely not! Nathan Hawthorne: And ladies and gentlemen, that's gonna do it for episode 10, the milestone episode 10 of the Know Your Personnel podcast, AKA KYP. I'm Nathan Hawthorne. This is my cohost, Jared McEnroy, and we will see you guys on the next one.
