- 1:35Speaker 3: Add the opportunity to meet in radio row at the
- 1:37Speaker 3: Super Bowl and that historic week when they announced the
- 1:40Speaker 3: Steelers are coming to Ireland for the first time. The
- 1:43Speaker 3: voice of Los Steelers, Alvaro Martin, You're very very welcome.
- 1:48Speaker 4: Thank you, Mike, thank you for having me. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 4: we were neighbors at the Super Bowl. Literally, when Michael
- 1:53Speaker 4: would have to leave, we'd watch over his stuff and
- 1:56Speaker 4: vice versa. So we were definitely looking out for each
- 1:59Speaker 4: other then. And obviously you're the hardest working man in
- 2:01Speaker 4: American football in Ireland, so I'm glad you could find
- 2:05Speaker 4: just a few minutes for me and also should tell
- 2:08Speaker 4: you that we're looking forward to traveling to Ireland on
- 2:11Speaker 4: aer Lingus because the group that's going with the team
- 2:15Speaker 4: where actually I live in New York City. I'm going
- 2:17Speaker 4: to fly to Pittsburgh so then I can get on
- 2:19Speaker 4: air Linga's flight to Dublin. So we're looking forward to
- 2:22Speaker 4: that too.
- 2:24Speaker 3: It feels like whenever we met that the Super Bowl
- 2:27Speaker 3: was last month. Can you believe that we're sitting here
- 2:31Speaker 3: two weeks out from the season. It's scary, but it's
- 2:33Speaker 3: amazing in a good way.
- 2:35Speaker 4: It is, but it's exciting. I've seen how I called
- 2:40Speaker 4: the first regular season game ever played outside of the US.
- 2:45Speaker 4: It was in Mexico, San Francisco forty nine ers Arizona Cardinals,
- 2:50Speaker 4: and I remember the feeling of anybody and everybody in
- 2:54Speaker 4: the stadium. The last people to be infected with that
- 2:57Speaker 4: feeling were the actual players who then got into the field,
- 3:01Speaker 4: looked around and realized what a historical moment that was
- 3:05Speaker 4: and how powerful that was as a marker. And I think,
- 3:09Speaker 4: you know, Dublin said some preseason games obviously, but that
- 3:12Speaker 4: was almost a generation ago, and so this is going
- 3:15Speaker 4: to be that kind of a moment. And I've been
- 3:18Speaker 4: I've seen it already in Mexico City. I can't wait
- 3:21Speaker 4: to see that phenomenon take place in Dublin with maybe
- 3:25Speaker 4: even a kicker slipping in into the NFL, whether it's
- 3:28Speaker 4: with Green Bay or not. That you begin to have
- 3:31Speaker 4: national champions as well is another important marker as well.
- 3:34Speaker 4: But you're seeing the beginning of something big and it's
- 3:36Speaker 4: fun to watch.
- 3:38Speaker 3: It's very fun as well. I guess if people are
- 3:41Speaker 3: listening to this and you're an NFL fan, you obviously
- 3:43Speaker 3: see the amount of things that go on around the
- 3:45Speaker 3: world in different especially in Latin America as well. The
- 3:49Speaker 3: Staters have got global market rights in Mexico from twenty
- 3:52Speaker 3: twenty one, thousands of Steeters fans in the market in Mexico.
- 3:57Speaker 3: We'll talk about that in the week. Second, and for
- 3:59Speaker 3: people in Europe listening, al Varro, talk to us a
- 4:01Speaker 3: bit about your role, because you've been quite busy over
- 4:05Speaker 3: the last few weeks and I could listen to work
- 4:07Speaker 3: with the Staters.
- 4:09Speaker 4: It is a lot of fun in terms of the
- 4:11Speaker 4: Spanish realm, and we announced the games in Spanish. We
- 4:14Speaker 4: happen to be now the more senior broadcast team at
- 4:17Speaker 4: the Steelers because there's been some turnover. Unfortunately on the
- 4:20Speaker 4: English side, we had Craig wolf Flear, a good friend,
- 4:23Speaker 4: pass away between the seas, and so we're all very
- 4:26Speaker 4: sad about that. But we have been broadcasting the Steelers
- 4:30Speaker 4: have since way before global markets. So in other words,
- 4:35Speaker 4: the Rooney family would dip into their pockets and spend
- 4:37Speaker 4: a significant amount of money to make sure that a
- 4:40Speaker 4: Steelers broadcast, in this case in Spanish, was available before
- 4:44Speaker 4: you could monetize it. It became a significant investment. But
- 4:48Speaker 4: that's how they felt about their fan base in Mexico.
- 4:52Speaker 4: For those who are listening to us, let me just
- 4:53Speaker 4: explain to you why the Steelers are so popular and
- 4:55Speaker 4: football so popular in Mexico. Back in the sixties, the
- 5:00Speaker 4: people that ran Mexican soccer were not too bright media wise,
- 5:04Speaker 4: and they decided that every single game in their league
- 5:07Speaker 4: would be played at noon their time, two hour blocks.
- 5:13Speaker 4: There wasn't a staggering of games. So if you wanted
- 5:15Speaker 4: to watch you know, football, meaning traditional football, you just
- 5:21Speaker 4: had that window for two hours on Sunday. If you
- 5:23Speaker 4: were a TV network that wanted to show sports, yet
- 5:25Speaker 4: nothing to show after the postgame. So what they did
- 5:28Speaker 4: is they started taking the afternoon games from the NFL.
- 5:31Speaker 4: They became so popular because already college football is being
- 5:34Speaker 4: shown on Saturdays in Mexico, that it just became a firestone.
- 5:38Speaker 4: And that is around the time when Pittsburgh won four
- 5:41Speaker 4: championships over six years. So everybody got into the Steelers bandwagon,
- 5:45Speaker 4: to the point now where those initial fans have their
- 5:49Speaker 4: grandkids become Steelers fans. Three generations now wearing the colors,
- 5:55Speaker 4: going to games, visiting games, whether it's in Dublin or
- 6:00Speaker 4: it's in Acrosure or anywhere else. In numbers significant numbers,
- 6:05Speaker 4: hundreds in every game to see their beloved team. Just
- 6:09Speaker 4: to give our listeners and viewers a bit of perspective,
- 6:12Speaker 4: the population of Pittsburgh is about four hundred and twenty
- 6:15Speaker 4: thousand people city limits. In Alleghany County, which encompasses many
- 6:20Speaker 4: more cities, it's about one point two million. Well, Mexico
- 6:24Speaker 4: City has more fans than Alleghany County has people, I
- 6:30Speaker 4: mean Steelers fans. So the number one city in the
- 6:33Speaker 4: world for Steelers fans is not Pittsburgh. Pittsfrom number two.
- 6:38Speaker 4: It's Mexico City. And while I don't know the fact
- 6:42Speaker 4: for sure, I would guess that Monterey, Mexico's number three
- 6:45Speaker 4: on the list. Just to give you a perspective, if
- 6:48Speaker 4: you put together all the Steelers fans in Mexico in
- 6:50Speaker 4: the US, one out of three live in Mexico, it's
- 6:54Speaker 4: an enormous group, probably one of the bigger fan bases
- 6:57Speaker 4: of any team. Probably over between seven and eight million
- 7:01Speaker 4: people avowed Stevers fans in a country where we rarely
- 7:07Speaker 4: play a game, and we haven't played one in three decades,
- 7:12Speaker 4: and so just for people to get their heads around,
- 7:15Speaker 4: it was an accident that the Mexican Soccer Federation decided
- 7:18Speaker 4: to put put all their games together in the sixties,
- 7:21Speaker 4: opening the door of the NFL. That's when Pittsburgh one
- 7:24Speaker 4: people got on the bandwagon. They're still in that bandwagon.
- 7:26Speaker 4: The team has still won two more championships after that,
- 7:29Speaker 4: and then they're competitive people of state. The flame has
- 7:31Speaker 4: been lit and kept alive. And now the possibility of
- 7:35Speaker 4: going to Dublin, going to Germany at some point and
- 7:39Speaker 4: going to Mexico again, Mexico City. It's exciting, Michael, it's exciting.
- 7:44Speaker 4: I mean, I'm telling you, I'm not Irish, but I'm
- 7:46Speaker 4: really excited to see the flame to be lit the
- 7:49Speaker 4: way it's going to be on September twenty.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Eighth, a big time. And you mentioned the population figures
- 7:55Speaker 3: around one point two million in Dublin, so it's funny.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Like you talk about the family, it is really being
- 8:02Speaker 3: ahead of time and getting to that and you can
- 8:04Speaker 3: see the dividends that have been paid from that, which
- 8:06Speaker 3: is awesome to see. I would really recommend anybody from
- 8:10Speaker 3: Ireland or Europe go on this theater's website and check
- 8:12Speaker 3: out some of the parties I've had in Mexico during
- 8:15Speaker 3: the season. When not if they do hopefully play down there,
- 8:19Speaker 3: it's going to be awesome. Do you think there's a
- 8:21Speaker 3: real excitement from fans down there about the game in
- 8:24Speaker 3: Dublin because it maybe gives them a hope in the
- 8:27Speaker 3: future that they'll come down towards Mexico as well. I
- 8:30Speaker 3: know a lot of people. I've a lot of people
- 8:32Speaker 3: reach out to me from North America and South America.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Really their their their plan to fly over the their
- 8:39Speaker 3: plan to spend a couple of weeks in Dublin, which
- 8:41Speaker 3: is really really cool as well.
- 8:43Speaker 4: Man, you know, it's the US. I don't know if
- 8:46Speaker 4: it's one out of four one out of five hundred
- 8:47Speaker 4: and six citizens of the country have Irish roots. Obviously
- 8:53Speaker 4: with a lot of intermarriage with different people from different countries,
- 8:55Speaker 4: but still some Irish roots, including members of my family.
- 8:59Speaker 4: By the way, I should add, so the notion of
- 9:03Speaker 4: Ireland is something that's not just another country in Europe.
- 9:06Speaker 4: It's a country that has some resonance in the US.
- 9:09Speaker 4: You know, Ireland for a lot of people mean something special. However,
- 9:15Speaker 4: I think a lot of people still see it as, oh,
- 9:17Speaker 4: what a fun chance to mix a visit to Ireland
- 9:21Speaker 4: with football and my favorite team. What a great opportunity.
- 9:25Speaker 4: I think they miss the again, the historical aspect of
- 9:29Speaker 4: is of it, and the point and the fact that
- 9:32Speaker 4: this is turbo charging a new fan base and activating
- 9:36Speaker 4: a country and eventually a continent. And I think that's
- 9:39Speaker 4: the part that they miss. I think they're going to
- 9:41Speaker 4: see that when they come back and tell their friends
- 9:43Speaker 4: and oh, let me tell you what's going on in Ireland.
- 9:45Speaker 4: Ooh it was impressive, and they'll say they'll be sort
- 9:48Speaker 4: of the the they'll be preaching that that. I don't know.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I'm not sure they know that coming into the game.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Other then it's going to be a lot of fun,
- 9:57Speaker 4: and it will be a lot of fun. So to me,
- 10:00Speaker 4: that's the part that I know because I've seen it
- 10:02Speaker 4: before in Mexico and I twenty years ago, and I
- 10:07Speaker 4: can't wait to see that, to see that in a
- 10:10Speaker 4: different country, different culture, and how the love of the
- 10:13Speaker 4: game is going to get into the reins and begin
- 10:16Speaker 4: to spread and it won't be Christians in Rome like
- 10:20Speaker 4: you anymore. It'll be a little bit more mainstream.
- 10:24Speaker 3: A little under forty days of that game, I'm sure
- 10:26Speaker 3: we'll have a chance to hopefully meet in Dublin that week. Alvarrow,
- 10:30Speaker 3: you're quite close to the team and the fact that
- 10:32Speaker 3: you know, you obviously cover games, you're around the team.
- 10:35Speaker 3: One thing that has obviously changed since we last spoke
- 10:38Speaker 3: to each other is a number of different players have
- 10:41Speaker 3: come in, a number of players have come out. What's
- 10:43Speaker 3: your thoughts if you had to sum up the off
- 10:45Speaker 3: season and where we are to now in terms of
- 10:47Speaker 3: how this team has performed.
- 10:49Speaker 4: Well, there are two key people in the Steelers hierarchy
- 10:52Speaker 4: that are making interesting work. Whether it's good or not,
- 10:55Speaker 4: time will tell, and the championships or not will determine.
- 10:59Speaker 4: But it's you know, Omar Khan, a guy of Honduran
- 11:03Speaker 4: and Pakistani descent, and then Andy Widel who's from Pennsylvania,
- 11:07Speaker 4: old German family in Pennsylvania, in the Pittsburgh area, and
- 11:13Speaker 4: he has an eye for talent by position and what
- 11:16Speaker 4: team construction should be. Omar also has that. People short
- 11:19Speaker 4: change that, but he's a whiz at setting up the
- 11:22Speaker 4: team for transactions. What surprises me is not the amount
- 11:28Speaker 4: of change and the sort of transactions they're making trades,
- 11:32Speaker 4: big trades involving stars at their peak, like MIKEA. Fitzpatrick
- 11:36Speaker 4: going to Miami in exchange for two starters, but the
- 11:40Speaker 4: way that the Rooney family and the Pittsburgh fan base
- 11:45Speaker 4: has adapted to that. I think anybody else does that,
- 11:50Speaker 4: especially an outsider. If someone from outside of Pittsburgh. We
- 11:53Speaker 4: didn't grow up in the team vital again from the area.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Omar had been there sixteen years as an assistant that
- 11:59Speaker 4: Kevin co bar for that, they would have never accepted
- 12:04Speaker 4: these changes. It would have been on Pittsford light. It
- 12:06Speaker 4: would have been criticized. They're making such significant changes and
- 12:12Speaker 4: moving the pieces on the chessboard in anticipation so well
- 12:17Speaker 4: and without any president. When it comes to Pittsburgh that
- 12:20Speaker 4: it is stunning to see that. It is stunning to
- 12:22Speaker 4: see the amount of change and the acceptance of the
- 12:24Speaker 4: change in Pittsford. I think part of it is the
- 12:26Speaker 4: way the league runs right now. It's very difficult to
- 12:28Speaker 4: really construct the team strictly through your draft, but they're
- 12:31Speaker 4: trying and they're actually having success. But the amount and
- 12:35Speaker 4: the scale and the importance of change in Pittsburgh so
- 12:40Speaker 4: quickly has been accepted by everybody incredibly Well. Again, results
- 12:46Speaker 4: will be results, and in the end that everybody will
- 12:49Speaker 4: be judged by then the standard is a standard, right,
- 12:52Speaker 4: We know that phrase, But I think that's the most
- 12:55Speaker 4: important thing I can tell you. It's just amazing to
- 12:58Speaker 4: see the Rooney family be equanimous about just the change
- 13:03Speaker 4: that's happening. Well, we've never done this before, and it's
- 13:06Speaker 4: like open but it's we have to do this. So
- 13:10Speaker 4: there's a lot of consensus that this is the right
- 13:12Speaker 4: way to do that and that they're setting up the
- 13:15Speaker 4: team for great things in the future. We'll find out
- 13:17Speaker 4: this year again, but but I think that's probably the
- 13:21Speaker 4: feeing that I can convey to you. It is stunning
- 13:23Speaker 4: to see that. That's very unpitchfored like, but I think
- 13:27Speaker 4: it's a good thing. And again we'll find out how good.
- 13:33Speaker 3: I can't do Anna more than the great. You know,
- 13:35Speaker 3: it's been a really interesting off season interest in somewhere
- 13:38Speaker 3: and I'm really excited to see what happens. We're actually
- 13:41Speaker 3: bringing you all Alvarro before the final preseason game, just
- 13:45Speaker 3: to remind Irish listeners the pont first staters game late
- 13:49Speaker 3: Thursday night early Friday morning this week Virgin Media. To
- 13:52Speaker 3: watch it on TV, you can listen and off the ball.
- 13:55Speaker 3: We're gonna have a podcast outs in the middle of
- 13:57Speaker 3: the next week recap and not looking ahead to the
- 13:59Speaker 3: season to college football game all over at Larder this
- 14:02Speaker 3: weekend as well, so it's a busy weekend and you
- 14:04Speaker 3: can catch the Mike Tomlin Show this season on Virgin Media.
- 14:07Speaker 2: What's your thoughts?
- 14:08Speaker 3: Just finally being Alvaro of the preseason so far. Obviously
- 14:12Speaker 3: Jacksonville that first game, close loss to the Bucks and
- 14:17Speaker 3: the home opener in preseason last week, and not an
- 14:20Speaker 3: opportunity for guys that might not start to come out
- 14:22Speaker 3: in this final game against the Panthers to try and
- 14:25Speaker 3: cement their chances. You know, sometimes people can be very
- 14:28Speaker 3: die on the preseason, but for a lot of these guys,
- 14:30Speaker 3: this is you know, their their careers, their moments where
- 14:34Speaker 3: they have to show some development, they have to shine
- 14:36Speaker 3: in these big moments because for a lot of players,
- 14:39Speaker 3: this is a huge importance to this game this week.
- 14:42Speaker 4: You know, and Irish American head coach it's very famous
- 14:45Speaker 4: named Bill Parcells used to say about young players, it's
- 14:49Speaker 4: like puppies. You know, they may not have any teeth,
- 14:52Speaker 4: but you don't want them to just bark. You want
- 14:53Speaker 4: them to bite. And I think these preseason games allows
- 14:57Speaker 4: players like the ones we're watching play with twenty two
- 15:00Speaker 4: who starters essentially being held out of the games and
- 15:03Speaker 4: probably held out of all of the preseason. But I
- 15:06Speaker 4: still love these games and why For example, let me
- 15:10Speaker 4: show you Roderick Jones and Troy Feltano, the tackles on
- 15:14Speaker 4: the offensive line on either end they're playing. They're not
- 15:17Speaker 4: playing the full game, but they're playing a significant amount.
- 15:19Speaker 4: And this season will go as far as they will perform. Literally,
- 15:25Speaker 4: it's the prism through which the light of this season
- 15:27Speaker 4: will be projected and will know exactly how good they
- 15:30Speaker 4: are and how they keep everything together. And let the
- 15:33Speaker 4: offense become a contributor as opposed to an appendage to
- 15:36Speaker 4: the defense. They play, You got to watch them play.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Then you've got the rookies, Caleb Johnson the running back,
- 15:43Speaker 4: You've got hy A Black, You've got Derek Harmon, You've
- 15:46Speaker 4: got Jack Sawyer. They play. They play what you see
- 15:50Speaker 4: Roman Wilson, it's almost like a hidden player. Basically didn't
- 15:55Speaker 4: play much the last season as a rookie, and so
- 15:57Speaker 4: now you begin to unveil what he can do. That's
- 16:00Speaker 4: what these games are about. Yes, you can tell me
- 16:03Speaker 4: it's not the top, top notch competition. I get that part.
- 16:06Speaker 4: But there are things that they do that they will
- 16:08Speaker 4: do against top notch competition on the field, against whoever.
- 16:11Speaker 4: It's what they're made out of. And I think that's
- 16:14Speaker 4: what makes these games so interesting because, as you know,
- 16:18Speaker 4: the NFL is an attrition league, and unfortunately, the people
- 16:22Speaker 4: that start the season will not be the same people
- 16:23Speaker 4: that end the season. One thing that Omar has done
- 16:25Speaker 4: very well is create death. But I think part of
- 16:28Speaker 4: what's happening here, and it's up to the coaching staff,
- 16:30Speaker 4: is to get a Roman Wilson to become the number
- 16:32Speaker 4: two receiver or to fight with Calvin also to be
- 16:34Speaker 4: the number two receiver or who knows if more than that.
- 16:38Speaker 4: That is a fun thing to watch in every team
- 16:40Speaker 4: every year has at least one player that makes that
- 16:43Speaker 4: significant step. What you'd like to see in Pittsford is
- 16:46Speaker 4: a number of them make that step. And it's the
- 16:48Speaker 4: preseason that allows you the first chance to see, Okay,
- 16:52Speaker 4: what do they do between seasons? What do they work on?
- 16:55Speaker 4: How do they get better? And you're seeing that right
- 16:58Speaker 4: now and it's really really quite fun watch.
- 17:01Speaker 3: It is fun to watch. And one more thing that's
- 17:04Speaker 3: fun for Staeters fans in Ireland is when they wake
- 17:06Speaker 3: up on Friday morning, hopefully after having a late night
- 17:09Speaker 3: watching the game. The next game is going to be
- 17:12Speaker 3: that week one game in these Jersey and we're almost there. Alvarrow,
- 17:17Speaker 3: I would just firstly ask people to check out Lost
- 17:20Speaker 3: Steelers across social media. You'll see this guy pop up
- 17:22Speaker 3: a number of times throughout the season. I want to
- 17:24Speaker 3: wish you the very very best for the season and
- 17:26Speaker 3: thank you very much for coming on and really appreciate it.
- 17:29Speaker 3: I'm sure we'll have the opportunity to hopefully say hello
- 17:32Speaker 3: in Dublin, but for now, grasses over.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Thank you for well.
- 17:35Speaker 4: You're the James Brown of American football in Ireland. You're
- 17:39Speaker 4: the busiest man. So if we just wave at each other,
- 17:41Speaker 4: that will be enough for me, and hopefully we'll meet
- 17:44Speaker 4: again in less hurried circumstances. But I'm telling you, I
