- 1:50full length features on the Patreon platform.
- 1:52So you go to patreon.com/midgard Musings, you can watch this
- 1:55episode and it's a video format, which most of the time is not
- 1:59that big of a deal because there's nothing really great to
- 2:01see here unless you think this backdrop is, is exciting.
- 2:05But we do have guests on here from time to time.
- 2:08One of those times being today, we're going to be bringing on a
- 2:12very good friend and brother of mine here shortly.
- 2:15And you get to see how we interact on screen.
- 2:18And then sometimes there might be things that get shared on
- 2:20screen. So you never know.
- 2:21And it's it's only like a dollar dollar 50 pledge over there on
- 2:25Patreon and it helps with the production of this of this show.
- 2:28So check it all out if you want. And there's other ways that you
- 2:33can help support as well. The Linktree link that is the
- 2:37one stop shop for all of my social media, the the
- 2:39merchandise store, my now fairly new website,
- 2:43randomheathenramblings.com. It's more or less of a more or
- 2:46less A blog site where I write certain things that may or may
- 2:50not be related to Heathenry. It's just kind of whatever I'm
- 2:53thinking about at the time or want to write about at the time,
- 2:56but definitely feel free to check all that stuff out and
- 2:59anything else that's down there in the description.
- 3:01So if you've got you got guests coming on here, any way that you
- 3:04can support those folks? That'll be LinkedIn the show
- 3:08notes of this podcast in the description area down below for
- 3:10those of you watching. So thank you all so very much
- 3:13for your support. Follow me on all the socials,
- 3:16you know the drill. So all of that being out of the
- 3:19way leads me into welcoming in my guest this week.
- 3:25Talked to this guy a lot. Many of you know him, he's been
- 3:28on the show multiple times. But this this this episode of
- 3:33the podcast this week is a bit of a of an anniversary sort of
- 3:38episode. So five years ago, right around
- 3:42this time of, of, of the month, it was I think the, the episode
- 3:46in question or the, OR the video in question that I'm talking
- 3:49about with, with my guest today was the 23rd or 24th of April, I
- 3:55think something like that five years ago in 2020.
- 3:59And so, so this episode this week, we weren't doing the
- 4:06podcast back then, but it was an interview type type video.
- 4:10I had just recently started the podcast or, or yeah, the podcast
- 4:16wasn't quite rolling yet. I had I've been dabbling a bit
- 4:18in it, but my video content was, was much different.
- 4:24My my style was, was much different.
- 4:25The, the aesthetic, the look of everything was, was a lot
- 4:28different. And I've grown a lot since then.
- 4:31And my guest today has also shared in in some of that
- 4:34journey of my growth and his growth as well.
- 4:38So anyway, that that that video was was was titled A shaman
- 4:42interviews of Vidki, and we're going to kind of not relive that
- 4:48episode today where we're going to talk about other things.
- 4:51But I do know, as far as I'm aware that he does have some
- 4:54questions for me. So it's going to kind of be like
- 4:57a little celebration of that of that episode from from years
- 5:01ago. So you know him, you love him,
- 5:04and if you don't, you're going to find out about him today.
- 5:08Welcome to the show, Joshua Bright spirit Pennington, my
- 5:13good brother from another mother across Appalachia.
- 5:16Welcome to the show, man. Thank you.
- 5:18Thank you. Always an honor to be here with
- 5:20you, brother. Yeah, and it's an honor to have
- 5:23you back. And just thinking back on where
- 5:27our friendship started, where our relationship started, it
- 5:30started over social media. And, and that that video that I
- 5:33alluded to before where you came on my channel on YouTube and
- 5:37asked me some questions and the, the growth of things, you know,
- 5:40the growth of ourselves, our lives, both individually and
- 5:44shared. It's been quite, a, quite a
- 5:46thing to reflect upon, you know? At the time, I was watching your
- 5:54content, the things that you were putting out, and I was sort
- 5:56of doing my own little interview project, reaching out to content
- 6:01creators and people that were sharing in that scope, in that
- 6:06range for that community. And yeah, five years.
- 6:13Yeah, it's been it. Doesn't seem like it at all.
- 6:17Yeah, I don't know, right. I, I saw, you know, a week or
- 6:21two ago when kind of like my social media memories bring
- 6:24things up and I'm going, man, it's, it's been that long, you
- 6:28know, and I look at me and I look at you and, you know, it
- 6:32was, it was a much different time.
- 6:35And it's for, for such a short period of time to have lapsed.
- 6:37A lot has changed, you know, you've, you've, you've
- 6:42definitely embraced a different approach to your, to your, to
- 6:47your work. Just, you know, not, not just,
- 6:50you know, physical work. I mean, like that's been, I
- 6:53think kind of a, a constant, but it's evolved and it's growing
- 6:56with your spirit work too. Would you?
- 6:58Wouldn't you say? Absolutely, but I think that's
- 7:02important for everyone to do, no matter what your pursuits are in
- 7:07life, you've got to give yourself room to grow and to
- 7:10evolve, and you've got to give yourself permission to roll with
- 7:16those changes. That's kind of what life is all
- 7:20about. There were some huge changes
- 7:21that came about right around five years ago, especially for
- 7:26your type of work in content creating.
- 7:29We had COVID come in and suddenly a lot shifted to
- 7:34online. People were tapping into their
- 7:38their laptops and tablets and PCs and phones more for social
- 7:43media and for music and podcasts and video and all that stuff.
- 7:48So little did we know at that interview point that that was
- 7:54kind of like a a jump off point for all of this kind of stuff.
- 7:59Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:02Have have you, have you rewatched that that that video
- 8:05at all since? I have not.
- 8:07I told myself I wasn't going to just so that I could keep this
- 8:12one unique. Yeah.
- 8:15And honest and genuine. And like you said, not to relive
- 8:18that that first go around, but to let this be its own thing.
- 8:24I thought about it, that I told myself not to just live in a
- 8:31moment here now. Yeah, maybe.
- 8:35Maybe you watch it after this one comes out, you know, and do
- 8:39I'll. Put two screens open right
- 8:43Switch back and forth. Yeah, do like a little reaction
- 8:47thing to it all. I, I didn't, I don't think I've
- 8:50watched the whole thing in its entirety, but I did when I saw
- 8:53it come up on my memories. I'm like, oh man, you know, let
- 8:55me just take a walk down memory lane and, you know, your
- 8:58aesthetic, you know, was different back then.
- 9:01My quality of, of production was different, you know, and it's,
- 9:04and it's obviously what it is now.
- 9:06But, but we made it work the way it, when we made it work.
- 9:10And it was, and it was fun and we got a lot of good feedback
- 9:12too from it. There was a lot of people from
- 9:14both your side and mine who were really excited to to see both of
- 9:19us. Talking.
- 9:20That's an awesome, awesome thing with this too.
- 9:22Even five years later, a lot of those same people that tuned in
- 9:27for that video and that interview, we're still both
- 9:30friends with and connected to and talk to on a regular basis.
- 9:34Some really, really great people that I've met through your
- 9:37avenues and channel that are great, great friends of mine now
- 9:42and we keep in touch and they support my work as well as yours
- 9:48and that's always a plus. Definitely.
- 9:52Thank you. Thank you, by the way, for that
- 9:56commercial spot. At the beginning I completely
- 9:58forgot that that thing existed, so I appreciate that.
- 10:02Yeah. Oh yeah, true.
- 10:04The that that is a feature at every episode.
- 10:08You guys are kind of AI don't want to say a a paid sponsor,
- 10:12but your promotion is, is on my show every week.
- 10:17That, that, that is part of the intro to, to every show, no
- 10:21matter what. I'm, I'm always happy to make
- 10:24sure that people know about your crafts and what you do.
- 10:29And it's great having you here to be the face of that and
- 10:33represent that as you do. And but yeah, absolutely.
- 10:36Yeah. It's an honor.
- 10:37Thank you. Yeah.
- 10:38Yeah, no worries. I I think back then it was
- 10:45Heathen's greetings I. Had one of those Facebook
- 10:48memories pop up for me the other day too, and it was when I'd
- 10:54shared sort of like a a little celebration thing and a big
- 10:57thank you for the support. But it was Hayden's.
- 11:00Greetings US had reached 500 sales.
- 11:06OK. Wow, that's that's an awesome,
- 11:09awesome marketer. I really never had thought about
- 11:15sharing my work with the public. It was more crafting for
- 11:19personal and for friends, and my wife encouraged me to start
- 11:23sharing a little more openly with the things that I was
- 11:26creating. And I didn't expect it to take
- 11:30off like it did or to be where I'm at today full time.
- 11:36It's a blessing, absolute blessing.
- 11:40Yeah, I mean, it's afforded you the opportunity to really have
- 11:46involved, you know, be involved with your, with your family,
- 11:49with your children. I think, Hey, I think at the
- 11:52time that of that interview that long was, was Stellan even born
- 11:57yet? He might have just been born.
- 11:59I don't. Yeah.
- 12:01But yeah, I mean, Elva, you know, your kids were so small.
- 12:04You've got newest one on the, you know, here now just a just a
- 12:08little baby. And yeah, so and being here
- 12:11along that journey, you know, like I was saying before, you
- 12:13know, growing, literally growing a family and being a part of
- 12:19that in, in some sort of way is, is, has been truly amazing.
- 12:23Yeah, that and your visits here to spend time with my family,
- 12:30not just at features like Fire on the Mountain, but the time
- 12:34you spent up here at the Red Ghost Camp.
- 12:38The Viking experience this year. I got a chance to see you both
- 12:41there. Yeah, and Arden, the newest.
- 12:44Yeah. Got to meet the baby.
- 12:46Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:49So you, you were, you were recalling 500 sales five years
- 12:54ago when it was Heathen's greetings US five years later,
- 12:58Fialva to your workshop, you're at what now or what's the most
- 13:04milestone thing that you can recall having passed on sales?
- 13:09We had a few that I've shared, but there have also been some
- 13:16other things like 5 star reviews that I've shared all time.
- 13:21Just on the work that we put on Etsy right now is just over
- 13:279000. Wow.
- 13:31Just over 9000 sales, but we've also got fialvatier.com, that
- 13:35direct shop, and White Spirit dot art where I can share a
- 13:42little bit more of my Appalachian roots and family
- 13:47work. But there's a lot that doesn't
- 13:51go on the Etsy platform. They've got a lot of rules and
- 13:56regulations about what can be for sale and what can't.
- 14:01And it's not that there's anything illegal, everything
- 14:04that I do and produces above the board, licensed, registered, all
- 14:09that good stuff, but they're behind the times on their
- 14:14regulations. And so just as an example,
- 14:16things like anything with black bear, black bear claws or hide
- 14:22or fur or anything like that can't go on the Etsy, even
- 14:28though it's it doesn't have any sort of protected status.
- 14:33And I honor every piece that I work with, no matter if it's
- 14:37plant, animal, tree. So I don't want it to sound dry
- 14:43as we're talking about some of those insurance and outs and
- 14:46particulars like it's not a protected species, like it's not
- 14:51cared about. It's open.
- 14:53People bear hunt, people eat bear meat.
- 14:57It's a thriving population, especially here in North
- 15:00Carolina. I think we've got, if not the
- 15:03largest in the country, maybe the second largest black bear
- 15:06population managed very, very well, very responsibly done.
- 15:13And so it's a great honor for me to share some of that work with
- 15:17the public. Just not on Etsy.
- 15:19They don't, they don't let it go through.
- 15:23So yeah, just a little over 9000 on Etsy, but again, we've got
- 15:28the the Direct store, Bright spirit.org and then all of our
- 15:32in person work. The festival, like you just
- 15:34mentioned, the Viking Experience Festival hands down has got to
- 15:39be one of the favorite things that I've ever worked at.
- 15:42Just such a great atmosphere. It's organized well, planned,
- 15:46well laid out well. It provides so many
- 15:51opportunities for people to connect and reconnect.
- 15:56We got to spend time there together with so many of our
- 15:58friends that we're able to make it out and come say, hey, just
- 16:03awesome, awesome event. I really enjoy doing those in
- 16:08person type things. It changes the whole dynamic to
- 16:13hand someone something that you handmade versus, you know,
- 16:18boxing it up and putting it in a package and sending it across
- 16:23States and states to, to get where it needs to go.
- 16:26That's OK too. There's just really something
- 16:28special about handing a person something that you've made and
- 16:32seeing them take it as their own.
- 16:35Yeah, yeah, I can definitely relate with that on a much
- 16:40smaller scale, having, you know, done certain craftings of my own
- 16:45rune sets, but, you know, doing rune readings, you know, like
- 16:50having the space with a person, the time with the person,
- 16:54sharing space and having time with the person.
- 16:56Like that's, that's the type of work that I that I personally
- 17:00feel. You know, you can't really
- 17:03capture the essence of what you're doing in that way with
- 17:08that kind of work over long distance.
- 17:10It's there. There's something lost through
- 17:13that inability to to connect with that person face to face.
- 17:17There's no real exchange of energy.
- 17:20It's not like you really agree. Yeah, that's wild, man.
- 17:26All right. So not reliving that episode,
- 17:30but to honor the spirit of the interview style of that episode,
- 17:37I did have a few things that I wanted to talk to you about that
- 17:41are not just curiosities of mine that I think would be some
- 17:46things that your viewers and listeners would like to hear a
- 17:49little bit more on as well, given that we don't have a
- 17:54direct topic or anything that we're talking on.
- 17:58You kind of mentioned it a little bit at the beginning and
- 18:01we talked on it a little bit just a few minutes ago, but it's
- 18:05been five years. Technology has changed so much
- 18:11over just these last five years, new apps and new avenues and new
- 18:18trends and things. I don't think TikTok was even a
- 18:22thing back then, and I don't think that you do TikTok.
- 18:26But for content creators, I think a lot has changed, a lot
- 18:33of the dynamics in your approach to your work.
- 18:37I know there for a period, Shorts became a thing, Reels
- 18:41became a thing. So how do you feel about the way
- 18:48that the last five years have transitioned for Midgard
- 18:51musings, random heathen ramblings?
- 18:54How do you feel that you've handled some of those changes
- 18:58and shifts and trends in viewership and in listenership
- 19:03via, you know, here, your Patreon, Spotify, social media
- 19:09outlets? What has that journey been like
- 19:12for you over the last five years?
- 19:17Yeah, I've definitely learned a lot about the type of creator
- 19:24that I am when faced with the challenges that came up and
- 19:28'cause, you know, one of the big, one of the big things about
- 19:33being a content creator is staying relevant, you know, and
- 19:37not getting buried in an algorithm.
- 19:40So, so much of what drives content creators to do what they
- 19:44do is to find ways of staying relevant with their content.
- 19:51You know, one of the challenges with that is to not compromise
- 19:57your integrity and your originality by just jumping on
- 20:00the latest trendy bandwagon of something to do and become in
- 20:06genuine, you know, and I had I hit a point a few years back
- 20:13that. I, I, I found myself getting
- 20:18dangerously close to, you know, I was, I was repurposing content
- 20:21that I thought would get me views and clicks and likes and
- 20:24reactions and, and attention and trying to use them to boost my
- 20:32reach ability, my views, you know, all that stuff.
- 20:35And then still do my, my normal long form content, whether it
- 20:39was podcasting or live streams or, or any of that other long
- 20:44form content, you know, where people can sit down for 20-30
- 20:48minutes at a time and, and get something.
- 20:52So what I learned though, was that, you know, that's that
- 20:55short form content is great for gather like collecting a fan
- 21:02base or, or, or getting people to notice you.
- 21:05Because one of the things that happened with, with, with like
- 21:10the, the COVID pandemic and then social media, the reels, the
- 21:14shorts, the TikTok trends, you know, people just doom scroll.
- 21:18They'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll, they'll not
- 21:20even absorb anything of value and they'll just see, you know,
- 21:23a few seconds of something and they'll move on.
- 21:27So you got to be captivating in that first few seconds.
- 21:31You got to give somebody something, a reason to want to
- 21:34stop with their doom scrolling and see what it is that you're
- 21:37doing. And I caught into that trend and
- 21:39I'm like, what am I even offering?
- 21:41How can I do anything of value for what, you know, I believe in
- 21:45and what I'm doing this for within, you know, 30 to to 60
- 21:50seconds or 90 seconds or whatever it was.
- 21:53And I, and I ate right around the time that my YouTube channel
- 21:56got demonetized is when I realized, you know, you're going
- 22:01down a path of just trying to stay trendy, trying to be
- 22:05popular. You're, you're losing your
- 22:07values and you need to go back to that.
- 22:10What did you originally start mid guard musings for?
- 22:14What was the impetus behind this thing?
- 22:18And I had to do some of that reflection upon myself and go,
- 22:22you know what, these likes, these views, these followers and
- 22:26all this stuff, it doesn't matter.
- 22:28It's cool, it looks nice or whatever.
- 22:30It's like a neat little achievement award or something
- 22:34that you get to say, oh, I've got 20,000 this or 6000 that or
- 22:37whatever. End of the day, really doesn't
- 22:39matter because I'm not, I'm not obligated to these people in
- 22:44that sort of in, in any sort of tangible way.
- 22:46You know, if I stop making content or I stop releasing a
- 22:50podcast, it would, you know, some people would miss it and
- 22:52it'd be disappointing, but they'd find something else, you
- 22:55know, and, and so I had to go back and I go, so then why am I
- 22:58doing this? You know, who am I doing this
- 23:00for? And once I re evaluated my
- 23:04approach to things and didn't focus so much on being trendy
- 23:09or, or what was popular and just doing what was genuine, things
- 23:14changed for me. You know, I, I, I, I moved over
- 23:18to the Patreon platform to say, all right, well, if you're going
- 23:21to support what I do, you want to watch what I do, then then
- 23:25here's the place to do it. If you don't, then don't.
- 23:28I'm not making you do it, you know, and it also helped keep
- 23:32my, my mental health in check because the internet's a, a wild
- 23:36place. And when you put yourself out
- 23:38here in any sort of way, you know, you're, you're, you're,
- 23:43you're opening yourself up to just about anybody and anything
- 23:46to, to criticize and to just troll you.
- 23:48And, you know, I, I wouldn't want to be creating content for
- 23:54a living. It would drive me absolutely
- 23:57bananas because of all of the trends and the this and then the
- 24:00people saying what they're saying, you know?
- 24:02And so, yeah, I mean it one of the, like I said over the last
- 24:07five years, one of the things that that really spoke to me was
- 24:12you can still be a part of this social media thing with the
- 24:16reels, the short form content and all this without sacrificing
- 24:21your integrity, without compromising what you're doing
- 24:27and just be genuine and be true. And that's, that's what I,
- 24:31that's what I learned through. The the shorts like the shorts
- 24:35and the reels are almost for your work, kind of like the
- 24:39preview for a movie. Like the Yeah Yeah gives people.
- 24:44This is what I'm about, and if you want to see the movie,
- 24:47here's where it's playing. And I totally get it.
- 24:50The Patreon move your content is educational, so that small
- 24:56Patreon subscription is almost kind of like a library card.
- 25:01You pay for that library card and then you got access to all
- 25:04this information that you can learn from and grow from and.
- 25:11Yeah, I I didn't think that it was going to do well honestly,
- 25:16because I'm like, who wants to pay to listen to me talk about
- 25:19what I talk about, you know, but people have and it's nice, you
- 25:23know, like I say, it's it's it's not anything that, you know, the
- 25:26dollar is an is an important thing nowadays.
- 25:28It's at it's what everybody requires to to to survive with
- 25:32now and and leave the. Value of that you got to eat.
- 25:35You got to eat, you got to keep a roof over your heads, you
- 25:38know, So I mean, even what I do, as little as it is, I mean,
- 25:42that's a dollar of whatever it is that could be going towards
- 25:44something else. And people have repeatedly
- 25:47chosen to include that, you know, as a, as a form of
- 25:52support. So it's and I and, and, you
- 25:54know, seeing that and, and, and realizing that that's what
- 26:00people are doing makes me want to be more to, to stay genuine.
- 26:05You know, the, oh, they're, they're paying for what I am and
- 26:08who I am. They're not paying for something
- 26:09else. They're not paying for an
- 26:10entertainer. They're you know what I mean?
- 26:13It's educational and it's it's your time, it's your research,
- 26:18it's your experience that you're sharing.
- 26:21So those things, absolutely. Yeah.
- 26:24Would you say that it would be more the same or less?
- 26:30And I don't want to use the term competitive, but would you say
- 26:35there are more, the same or less content creators in this
- 26:41community? Heathen reenorse paganism.
- 26:45People that are making the same kind of content that's
- 26:47educational compared to five years ago.
- 26:55I think I definitely don't think that there's more than there
- 27:00were five years ago. It's probably less.
- 27:07I mean, and here's why some people who I've seen, you know,
- 27:12that I, that I used to, to see put content out five years ago,
- 27:19don't do it anymore for various reasons, some of which I don't
- 27:25know, but obviously, but I, I suspect that one of the reasons
- 27:30could be burnout. You know, maybe they just
- 27:35realize that this was a great idea at 1st and you know, you
- 27:38get that, that spark and you don't want to do something.
- 27:40And then you see the work that's required to put into it.
- 27:44And you know, you're not, if you're not in it for the, for
- 27:48the right reasons, you get burnt out, you get discouraged.
- 27:50You get, you know, and that was the other thing too.
- 27:52Like you see if you, if you if, and that's why I said I didn't
- 27:56want to ever think about making a living doing so, you know,
- 27:59content creation, because you start looking at all the
- 28:02analytical metrics. If things, certain things aren't
- 28:08performing a certain way metrically, you know, now you're
- 28:11thinking about that and instead of being genuine with your
- 28:15content. And I'm like, man, I couldn't, I
- 28:17couldn't stay that way all the time, you know, like it's it
- 28:22would, it would, it would drive me bonker.
- 28:23So I don't and I don't really follow a whole lot of other
- 28:27content creators there. There are a few that I've
- 28:29maintained and and still watch or listen to you.
- 28:32Wanna give them a shout out? Yeah, I mean we.
- 28:36Don't have to, but if you want to plug them.
- 28:38It's. Your shame?
- 28:39There's, there's, there's and he doesn't really do a lot on
- 28:43YouTube, but he he does a lot on on the Facebook community.
- 28:46So the Altsa do Germanic Heathenry.
- 28:50So Altsa do is the Facebook group.
- 28:52Germanic Heathenry is the page. Robert Sass is the man behind it
- 28:57all. And he's a reconstructionist,
- 28:59old ways heathen of the Saxon beliefs, you know, so that he's
- 29:03he's of a Saxon heathen persuasion.
- 29:07But he does a lot of work, well researched blog articles.
- 29:12And he does have a YouTube channel, doesn't really do a lot
- 29:14on the YouTube channel, but that's a guy that I've
- 29:18consistently maintained visibility with and I've had him
- 29:20on the show several times as well.
- 29:23Scott Shell, Doctor Scott Shell. He has a YouTube channel and
- 29:28it's such a a long like it's not an easy thing.
- 29:32And even he admits that he's like, if you just search my name
- 29:35on YouTube, you'll find it. But he does a great he does
- 29:40great work more the linguistic sides.
- 29:43I remember him. He's a linguist and so he he
- 29:47speaks and and understands Old Saxon and other dramatic
- 29:50languages. Norse magic and belief I I still
- 29:54catch some of his stuff. I can't remember his name off
- 29:57the top of my head, but Norse Magic and Belief is another
- 30:01YouTube channel that that does really good, well researched
- 30:06videos. Nordic animism, the rune
- 30:09Rasmussen rune rune, you know what I'm talking about.
- 30:14He's. Danish I think.
- 30:15I really like his stuff, reclaiming the animistic side of
- 30:20Nordic beliefs and going down that path is is because I've
- 30:25I've I've I've in my heathenry, I've I've shifted into a very
- 30:31animistic view of the world. He's he's.
- 30:36Another one that. That's been putting out stuff
- 30:38for years that I still follow. So yeah, those are some guys
- 30:41that have that have at least maintained what they do and have
- 30:44been pretty consistent about it that I still enjoy so.
- 30:47Would you say? For a lot of those that have
- 30:50fallen off or that you don't see any more.
- 30:54A big part of that may. Be that shift or that change in
- 30:58how people are consuming that they have shifted to that 1530
- 31:04seconds short form content. Just quick things, reels almost.
- 31:08What was that app back in the day?
- 31:10Vine? Oh yeah.
- 31:12Quick videos it was like. Vine was the first TikTok or
- 31:15something like that, yeah. But would you say?
- 31:19The rise of those short form content creators may have pushed
- 31:24some of those educators out. They're just kind of there for
- 31:281015 seconds of entertainment. I mean, I, I definitely.
- 31:36Think that it has you can't you can't say that it didn't have an
- 31:40impact on on people because. You know it it.
- 31:44It's one of those like double edged sword situations I feel,
- 31:47'cause you can, you can leave clues or hints or bread crumbs
- 31:51for people within the very short period of time that can drive
- 31:54them to want to check out more things like that.
- 31:57So in some ways it, it, it does have some benefit, but if all
- 32:02you're doing is just in it for the, you know, for, for that,
- 32:06for that quick hit of something and you're not willing to take
- 32:09any time or do anything, then yeah, I can see how people that
- 32:13do like Eric Shervin, for example, you know, he shifted
- 32:16too, he shifted away from YouTube and went into the TikTok
- 32:19areas of things. And he was getting a lot of
- 32:22engagement on TikTok because of that.
- 32:25So he was able to leverage that platform with his education and
- 32:31his style of learning because he was, you know, when I was
- 32:33starting with creating content on YouTube, like he was one of
- 32:36the first people that I saw doing anything really
- 32:40interesting with Heathenry. He was one of my inspirations to
- 32:44to get into doing stuff online, you know, and to learn more and
- 32:47to be a, you know, not just be some.
- 32:51Oh, I watched Vikings a few times and I read a couple of
- 32:53books and I have a copy of the Prose Edda or the Poetic Edda
- 32:56and I've got a Mueller and I can talk about stuff on the Internet
- 32:58now, you know, like if you've. Read a couple of Wikipedia
- 33:03articles. Just go ahead and.
- 33:05Slap. The scholar name tag on me,
- 33:09right? Yeah, that's I had to ask.
- 33:13Because the whole time we're talking about this, a song that
- 33:16keeps playing over in my head, that video killed the radio
- 33:20star. Yeah.
- 33:23Yeah. So like that, there has been
- 33:25that major, major shift and like we're talking about real shorts,
- 33:29TikTok came about the way that we fill our, our free time kind
- 33:37of changed a little bit. We're looking for that quick
- 33:40feed. A lot of people are, but then
- 33:42there are still those who are. And it's good to hear.
- 33:46Looking for that time and someone that who's put the work
- 33:51in and sharing and educating. So thank you for still doing
- 33:57what you do and. Being one of the Ogs.
- 34:02Now one of the veterans still having at it your values and
- 34:08maintaining those. I appreciate the.
- 34:13I appreciate you saying that, brother, because I can't tell
- 34:16you, You know, there's been plenty times where I've, for
- 34:20various reasons, you know, I've, I've come this close to just.
- 34:27Turning everything off. And just saying the hell with
- 34:29it. And I think some of that can be,
- 34:36you know, again, when when you as a, as a.
- 34:41Whether it's a. Podcast or or video or whatever,
- 34:44you know, whatever content you're putting out, you know,
- 34:46there's, it's inevitable. You, you, you get this sense of
- 34:51an obligation that you have to some degree of, of OK, well,
- 34:56I've got to put this this video out on this day at this time, or
- 35:00I've got to release this episode at this time, this side or the
- 35:02other. You know, I've got to do these
- 35:03things. I've got to meet these
- 35:04expectations and then you don't want to let.
- 35:10People down? Yeah, you don't want to let
- 35:12people. Down, but, you know, and then
- 35:13and then and then at the same time, at least for me, I was
- 35:18like, well, what does it matter even anyway, you know, like, OK,
- 35:23so they'll miss me for a little while or they'll they'll wish I
- 35:26was it. But but really, what it what
- 35:29what value do I bring? Really?
- 35:32You know, and I've questioned myself a lot.
- 35:35You know, I've questioned those times where you were.
- 35:37Like teetering on that burnout like you were talking about.
- 35:40Yeah, not quite there, but feeling close to it.
- 35:47Something else that I did. Not know about you five years
- 35:50ago that I know now your community work, the things that
- 35:56you go out and attend in person throughout.
- 36:02Your whole surrounding. Area.
- 36:06They're put. Together in part by different
- 36:09groups and different organizations, local kindreds,
- 36:12but that grass root type community work face to face.
- 36:19How? Has that been?
- 36:20Going. Has that picked up?
- 36:23I know that you. Go and you provide ritual.
- 36:27At some of. These events and ruin readings
- 36:31at some of these events and educational classes at some of
- 36:35these events. I've seen some of the videos
- 36:38that were recorded of you teaching.
- 36:41How has that whole thing been going?
- 36:45Yeah, it's actually kind of dialed back a little bit with
- 36:52where I go and, and how often I'm out in, in some of those
- 36:56things. You know, I'm, I'm big on the
- 36:59importance of in person experiences, you know, boots on
- 37:04the ground, the grassroots level of Heathenry cause the the, the
- 37:09values that Heathenry. You know carries.
- 37:14With it is is every community is everything your people are,
- 37:18everything you know you're not, you're not going to experience.
- 37:23Things. That that heathenry carry like
- 37:27stumble for example. You know, you can't, you can't
- 37:29experience stumble by yourself. You have to have a group of
- 37:33people to to partake in that ritual with.
- 37:37You can definitely have, you know, solitary practices,
- 37:41isolated ceremonies and, and rituals that you perform as a,
- 37:46as a solitary practice in heathen.
- 37:49But things like bloat or, or ritual with a community ritual
- 37:53with your people like that is, you know, I've been big on that
- 37:57for a long time. So I, I do, I, I do like to
- 38:01partake in that, in that aspect with people, but.
- 38:06When you. Get to be around people and you
- 38:11see people behaving and acting the way that they do.
- 38:20One of the things that comes with the desire to want to be
- 38:22around people's eye. You see free people for who they
- 38:24are and then you go, I don't want to be around them.
- 38:28I don't want to share in assemble with them.
- 38:30I don't want to share in ritual with them.
- 38:32So there's there's part of that degree of my involvement with
- 38:37the community that has dialed back a lot.
- 38:41Because it's not. About quantity to me anymore.
- 38:44It's not about how many gatherings can I attend, you
- 38:48know, how many places can I show up and be at to do this, that or
- 38:52the other. It's who's going to be there,
- 38:55what's going to be going on, and are they my people?
- 39:00You know, it's like that. Joke.
- 39:03Before you invite me anywhere now, I'm going to ask who all's
- 39:05over there, you know? And, and that's, that's, that's
- 39:09happened, you know, because I'm, you know, I'm not just, I'm not
- 39:12just me, you know, I, I, I have a family and a lot of times at
- 39:18these events, you know, my family goes with me, my wife and
- 39:21my bonus son. And you know that that extension
- 39:25of our of our of our roof. Tree.
- 39:28And I have to look, they're my number one responsibility and
- 39:33and obligation and not everybody else.
- 39:36So if if there's a situation there's something that is
- 39:39compromising to my roof tree, I'm not gonna, I'm gonna go.
- 39:43Hang out with. People that, that could be a,
- 39:46you know, a threat to that or, or compromise that in any way.
- 39:50So, yeah, it's, it's, it's one of those things that it's, I
- 39:54still do attend certain things like for example, I, I helped
- 40:02host or, or hosted a, a, a, a cigar bloat ritual this past
- 40:06month, you know, and it was out of public park and, and a lot of
- 40:10people came from. A good ways away, you know, some
- 40:13people came from an hour and a half away or two hours away just
- 40:17to come out and to have a meal and to and to share a ritual
- 40:21that that afternoon. And they're good people, you
- 40:25know. And it was you know, when you,
- 40:27when you, when you host public events, you, you know, you leave
- 40:30it open to the public and say, well, if people want to come,
- 40:32they can come. You're taking a chance, you
- 40:36know, 'cause you never know who's going to show up.
- 40:38It's we can't tell you no, that I mean, I guess you can in in a
- 40:43certain way you can, you can keep it closed off if you want
- 40:45to, but it's a public park and you know, you can't just run
- 40:47people off for, for. I don't like.
- 40:50The way you look or the way you smell, the way you talk or this
- 40:52or that, you know, But it's neat 'cause when, when you, you go
- 40:57into the like, at least what I found is when when I go into
- 40:59these situations with the right purpose behind it, the
- 41:07uncontrollable aspects of things tend to work themselves out and
- 41:11stressing about them and worrying about them is needless.
- 41:15It puts a stress on me that I didn't need.
- 41:19And so I just kind of give it up to.
- 41:22I'm doing the right thing. And I know that by doing the
- 41:24right thing, all this other stuff that I would typically
- 41:27want to worry about is a non issue and I don't have to worry
- 41:31about it. So I have to worry about people.
- 41:33Coming that I don't want to come.
- 41:36They know whether they. Know whether they're welcome or
- 41:38not, and they they'll they won't show up if they're not and I
- 41:41don't have to worry about it. A little more recent.
- 41:47I. Don't know what kind of.
- 41:50Is contrary to the quality over quantity.
- 41:57But you attended the Viking Experience.
- 41:59What was your take on that? It was your first time coming.
- 42:02I've worked that for three years now.
- 42:06This has been the biggest one. We're talking thousands and
- 42:10thousands of people. What was your take on working
- 42:14that event? You were there providing written
- 42:16readings and had some wares for sale also.
- 42:21So how did that kind of fit into all this, where you've been a
- 42:25little more careful about the people that you're around?
- 42:29But at the same time, it's a completely different event.
- 42:31Like we're not doing ritual there, we're not doing ceremony
- 42:34there. It is open to the public, but
- 42:37it's a massive, massive event. That you got.
- 42:41To work in person and exchange in that way person to person
- 42:47with your services there. Yeah, I mean, I loved.
- 42:53I loved. The experience, I loved the
- 42:56organization of it all and what I mean by, you know, the
- 43:00orderliness of it all the challenges that I face getting
- 43:06there and finding where I was supposed to be and all that.
- 43:08I mean, that's to be expected because I had never attended
- 43:11anything on that scale before in the capacity that I was
- 43:16attending it. So, you know, I've gone to
- 43:19plenty Renaissance festivals and been at, at things that the TVE
- 43:23does kind of have, you know, it's very reminiscent of of
- 43:27Renaissance Fair or that sort of a thing.
- 43:31But being a part of it in the capacity that I was this time
- 43:36really caused me to appreciate the the, the level of work and
- 43:41the orderliness that that goes into making something like that
- 43:45go off without a hitch or with, with minimal hiccups, you know,
- 43:51and then interacting with the public in that capacity was.
- 43:58You know I. Didn't, I didn't know what to
- 44:00expect and, and I was pleasantly surprised, you know, I didn't
- 44:04feel too overwhelmed at any given point in time, the, the
- 44:09nature of the work that I was there to do or the service that
- 44:11I was there to provide can tend to be or, or, you know, there is
- 44:16a propensity for it to, to wear on one's spirit because you're
- 44:21dealing with divination and, and exchange of energy with people
- 44:26who I've never seen before. I'm, I'm there with you for 1520
- 44:30minutes or whatever and then you're on your way.
- 44:32You know, there's a lot of that that I didn't know how I was
- 44:36going to to be, you know, 'cause I know what I've done in the
- 44:41past and how I felt in the past doing other personal or, or
- 44:45other in person room readings. And there have been days and
- 44:48moments where, you know, I get done with a reading for somebody
- 44:51and I go, I need a break. Like I need AI need to step
- 44:54away. I need to collect myself.
- 44:56I need to ground or whatever, you know, kind of collect myself
- 45:01again after that one, 'cause you know, that one, really, that one
- 45:05really knocked me off for a loop.
- 45:07And I didn't get that feeling from from TV and I don't know if
- 45:11it was because, well. I do.
- 45:14Know what it was, why it was, why I didn't get that feeling
- 45:18there was there were certain elements to what I was doing at
- 45:23TV that weren't the that weren't present in previous Rune
- 45:27readings that I've done. Even down to.
- 45:32The surface that the the rune readings were being cast upon,
- 45:36you know, casting runes on a on a, on a bear skin, you know,
- 45:42that energy, that spirit I felt was a critical and essential.
- 45:49Component. To keep things from getting too.
- 45:55Flighty, you know. Too.
- 45:57Too heady in a way. Like I, I, I genuinely feel that
- 46:01the, the, the, the bare spirit, that essence was there to keep
- 46:04things grounded and keep things rooted and strong, you know?
- 46:11So it. Was it was a very unique
- 46:16experience. I'm I'm glad to have had it and.
- 46:21I learned a lot from. Just seeing how an event like
- 46:25this is, is coordinated, seeing the people there, the the
- 46:27vendors, the the, the staff, everything it was, it was, it
- 46:32was something to behold. I think one of the things that.
- 46:36I appreciate most about TVE of all the events that have worked
- 46:41is. They kind of have.
- 46:44That same sentiment as you as the years roll by maintaining
- 46:50those core values, educating. Being.
- 46:56Historically accurate staff and the educators and the workshops
- 47:02that are held there are all done very well in a way that it's a
- 47:07great learning opportunity. It's not like a a cosplay thing
- 47:12or a dress up thing. Like the public can do whatever
- 47:15they want. You come in, I think I saw one
- 47:17guy walking around dressed as like, where's Waldo?
- 47:21Yeah, I saw that guy. There was a drunk.
- 47:24Mermaid Guy. The public.
- 47:28You can come. However you want to.
- 47:29But as far as the event and the staff and coordinators and
- 47:33organizers and everybody that pitches in with their classes
- 47:38and workshops, it's a great, great learning opportunity if
- 47:41you're interested in that Viking era.
- 47:45Yeah, Guy that was from Sweden. They're doing rune workshops,
- 47:50like really, really cutting all the crap out that's come along
- 47:56over the last 1520 years when it comes to runes to really kind of
- 48:02get it straight from the source referencing the rune stones.
- 48:06And he's just, he's an awesome guy.
- 48:10So many people put in so much work for those things.
- 48:13Great, great stuff. Speaking of guys putting in work
- 48:17for things, we've got another year of Fire on the Mountain
- 48:22coming up, not to be confused with Fire in the Mountains.
- 48:26I know that's a hot thing right now going to be going on up in
- 48:31the Blackfoot lands. A lot of music happening there
- 48:38on our Celvic or Druna, I think Black Braid.
- 48:43Yeah, it's a whole like. Music festival thing, I think
- 48:45right, we're going to be going up to.
- 48:46That but our thing. Is a.
- 48:49Fire on the Mountain kind of Harkins back to around that same
- 48:54time five years ago. We're in Year 5 now of it.
- 48:59Yeah, this is our fifth year. Isn't it?
- 49:01Yeah, all. Kind of started.
- 49:04We met online like so many people do, but then we had the
- 49:07opportunity to actually meet in person, exchange that energy and
- 49:13that spirit, sit around a table and talk, have real
- 49:15conversation. Not that stuff like this isn't
- 49:18real conversation, but like you were saying, when you're in
- 49:21person with somebody, you can read that person and feel, you
- 49:26know, that energy and that spirit.
- 49:28And so thankful that you and your wife had that trip planned
- 49:34that year and just so happened to be coming through.
- 49:37And one of the biggest takeaways in all of my time with Norse
- 49:44paganism is probably that opening section of the Hollow
- 49:50Mall. That sort of etiquette.
- 49:54Section on as a guest and as a host, having that opportunity to
- 50:03host a traveller passing through on the way to their destination.
- 50:09We were just kind of a stopover. It's a long, long drive for you
- 50:13guys to get where you were going.
- 50:14So we were a little over the halfway point, but we're able to
- 50:19be of service and provide a a place to stop in, stay over for
- 50:24the night, grab a meal. And it kind of all just.
- 50:29Really became. Real then.
- 50:32And there we were friends or else I wouldn't have welcomed
- 50:35you. I know it says to welcome the
- 50:37stranger, but I got kids here. So depends on this kind of year,
- 50:43but we were friends and I was so glad that you guys were taking
- 50:46that trip that year and we had that opportunity to connect
- 50:49because since then we've gotten together at least once a year,
- 50:52every year. On some occasions.
- 50:56Multiple times a year, even though we live hundreds of miles
- 51:00apart. And again, coming back.
- 51:04Into firearm and outcoming up this year.
- 51:09Yeah, I, I. You know, I, I still think about
- 51:14how I felt that first time coming up your driveway.
- 51:18And, you know, five years ago, we had no idea that that was
- 51:26going to be the the start of what fire on the mountain has
- 51:29become. We did like.
- 51:32Like you were saying April five years ago, but then you ended up
- 51:36making that trip November, I think.
- 51:39Yeah, it was right. On November.
- 51:41Yeah. Yep, 'cause we there for a
- 51:46little like we, we would visit my wife's family and you know,
- 51:50one part of Salisbury a bit South of where you are.
- 51:55But so like that, that, that time of year was, was when we
- 51:59would go and visit and said, Hey, you know, we're, we're,
- 52:03we've already made it out this far, you know, from Tennessee.
- 52:06So what's another, what's another hour and a half or two
- 52:10up the mountain and you get, we got to see that beautiful, you
- 52:13know, the landscape and the ruggedness of it all.
- 52:15And it was. But I just, I, I do, I, I, I'll
- 52:18never forget the feeling of, you know, coming up to your house
- 52:22the first time and seeing you come out and, and, and getting
- 52:27an embrace from you like I had been.
- 52:32Part of your family. For a long time, it was like, it
- 52:35was like welcoming a long lost friend, a long lost relative.
- 52:38You know, it wasn't like, oh, hey, nice to meet you, welcome
- 52:42to my home. Let's sit down.
- 52:43And, you know, it was very familial, you know what I'm
- 52:45saying at least. And, and I still, I get that
- 52:48feeling to this day, you know, coming up that hill and, and
- 52:50seeing that the landscape and everything, it's, it's like,
- 52:54it's like a feeling of coming home, some of that Appalachian.
- 52:59Hospitality. Shit man, it's can't have hug.
- 53:03If you're going to hug, you get it all, no?
- 53:06You know, they say Southern hospitality and of it man, like
- 53:09you guys went up it I think in Appalachia we were.
- 53:13We were Cindy and I were talking about.
- 53:15That whole Southern hospitality thing the other day and dug
- 53:21into. A little.
- 53:21Little bit this might upset some people watching or listening,
- 53:27but in a way Southern hospitality has kind of fizzled
- 53:33out. I don't know if it's just the
- 53:37general social atmosphere, but you don't see a whole lot of
- 53:43that same hospitality that you might have 1520 years ago
- 53:49traveling three places. People are more standoffish,
- 53:54more to themselves. Yeah, but in the mountains.
- 54:01I think it's still very much alive, and I think it comes down
- 54:06to the fact that it's always had to be that way.
- 54:12Because we are. Isolated.
- 54:15You've got to look out for each. Other community even.
- 54:21If your nearest. Neighbor is miles away means so
- 54:25much if you're in trouble or you're without something.
- 54:31So everybody's kind of always looked out for each other here,
- 54:36just because the way that life is here as the world has changed
- 54:41and progressed and everything is so much more convenient now.
- 54:48In the rest of the world. Or in the flat lands.
- 54:53You don't see as much of that. Or as much of that hospitality
- 54:57as you used to. I'm not saying that.
- 55:00Southern people are rude now it's just I think.
- 55:05That era. That bore that reputation has
- 55:14seen its best days. Well, I wonder if.
- 55:19I wonder if there's something to be said for the fact that, you
- 55:23know, a lot of places are crowded.
- 55:28People get anxious. Yeah, yeah, right.
- 55:32And so. Nobody knows one another like
- 55:33that because you get these complete strangers moving in
- 55:35from out of state or out of wherever, you know, just setting
- 55:38up camp and, and setting up residents in you're basically
- 55:42your backyard or whatever, you know, And it's like, who are
- 55:45these people? And they don't have those values
- 55:47because they came from other places that were built up to.
- 55:50And it's just, you know, those, those, those values of looking
- 55:56out for one another, you know, your neighbors, you knew who
- 55:59your neighbors are or were that sense of community.
- 56:04It's, it's a dying breed of people that can appreciate what
- 56:08that really means anymore because you've got, you know,
- 56:12which is ironic cuz look at all the, look at, look at the
- 56:14lifestyle that most people are living in nowadays.
- 56:16They're living in apartments or condominiums or or stacked up
- 56:20like, you know, matchbox units of living one upon another, side
- 56:26by side to another, your asses to elbows together, and you
- 56:29don't know each other from Adam. These days, it's ironic.
- 56:33That you're so close, but yet you're so disconnected from
- 56:36people anymore. You know, we've lost so much in
- 56:40our. Strive for convenience and of
- 56:46course anybody way back in the day would love to have running
- 56:51water or the fact that you can live in a house now that has
- 56:55multiple rooms where you can just go in and turn a knob and
- 56:58outcomes clean drinking water when even up into the late. 70s.
- 57:05Early 80s here, people were still walking down to a Creek or
- 57:09a spring or out to a well for water.
- 57:17Yeah, light. I mean electricity, you know,
- 57:19like all those modern amenities late. 70s early. 80s before
- 57:25people were getting electric in some places here.
- 57:29Allegheny County, Ash County, The next one over are known as
- 57:35the Lost Provinces of North Carolina.
- 57:39For some of the last. In the state to get any sort of
- 57:44connection to the. Rest of.
- 57:47The world or to any of the towns or cities, sort of like an
- 57:53isolated pocket where it was easier to get to what's now
- 57:58geographically southern Virginia or far eastern Tennessee.
- 58:06Than you could. Just 20 miles further east from
- 58:10here, it was easier to get to Virginia and Tennessee than just
- 58:1420 miles down the mountain the other way.
- 58:18Infrastructure finally caught up and came through and highways
- 58:23and. There's still.
- 58:25No highways in this county Interstate, right?
- 58:31But. Yeah, it's yeah.
- 58:37I mean, you know, it's. It's Wildman like.
- 58:41Where I live. Is is even 10 years ago?
- 58:44I mean, I moved to this area of Tennessee 10 years ago. 10 years
- 58:50ago this this. Year it'll be it'll be 10 years
- 58:52that I've lived in in Middle Tennessee Murfreesboro, you
- 58:54know, and this city, this town, whatever you know it used to be
- 58:58a college town and you know you're you're 40 miles 35
- 59:02whatever away from from Nashville, from the from the
- 59:04city doesn't feel like it anymore It's like the city got
- 59:08closer Oh yeah, didn't. But the the.
- 59:11Growth, the, the, the, everything.
- 59:14And you know, you say convenience.
- 59:17It's, it's, it's interesting to think about that word and, and
- 59:20what convenience means, you know, to make things easier, to
- 59:24make things more accessible, to make things, you know.
- 59:29But at what cost? How convenient is it really when
- 59:34we're losing some of those important values of humanity?
- 59:42You know, you don't know your neighbor, you don't care about
- 59:45your people next door to you. You don't, you know, it's
- 59:48everybody's out for themselves. It's, you know, rush, rush,
- 59:51rush. You know, dude, there's there's
- 59:53so many accidents that happened in town here, people getting hit
- 59:56by cars and and motorcycles getting run over because people
- 59:59aren't paying attention. What are you in such a damn
- 1:00:01hurry about man? What's where's the fire?
- 1:00:03Why, why why do you have to be in the front?
- 1:00:06They get cut off all the time just trying to get to the next
- 1:00:08intersection like you got in front of me 3 seconds sooner.
- 1:00:14What? What?
- 1:00:14How is that? Convenient you almost caused a
- 1:00:17wreck hurt, hurt people. You know what I mean to to to
- 1:00:20what just get gain up, gain a position.
- 1:00:22This ain't NASCAR, you know, It's like.
- 1:00:26I don't get it. I mean, I get it.
- 1:00:29I. Understand the what what's
- 1:00:31happening, but it's it's still doesn't.
- 1:00:36Doesn't make it easier. To to see.
- 1:00:39It's wild. That.
- 1:00:43Every generation. Kind of says the same thing
- 1:00:46about the next generation, that you're going too fast, you need
- 1:00:52to slow down, you're in too much of a hurry.
- 1:00:58I sound like my parents. But it's that.
- 1:01:00Continual progression for convenience and I think
- 1:01:05competition in the world. To be seen or to feel.
- 1:01:10Important or to make the most money or whatever it is, yeah.
- 1:01:16That's. Everybody wants to make a name.
- 1:01:18For themselves. And that goes back to like some
- 1:01:20of the what you were talking earlier about with like the, the
- 1:01:22content creation, you know, look at look at the direction that
- 1:01:25content creation has been going in and it has pretty much stayed
- 1:01:28in It's, it's how much can you cram into a minute and a half?
- 1:01:32And they've, they've increased it now you know, you can, you
- 1:01:34can, you can have quote UN quote, short form video,
- 1:01:36vertical content, whatever, up to 3 minutes, I think on, on
- 1:01:40like Facebook, whereas before it was like you were cut off at 60
- 1:01:44seconds. Now they're like, oh, you can do
- 1:01:47up. To 3 minutes like.
- 1:01:48Gee, thanks, you know. I think I appreciate.
- 1:01:53That. We might.
- 1:01:55Hear our grandparents complain about right now.
- 1:01:59They had to hear their. Grandparents complain about
- 1:02:02while they were growing up and their grandparents had to hear
- 1:02:04their grandparents complain about the same, not the exact
- 1:02:08same things, but the same things happening in the world things.
- 1:02:13Are changing. Too fast.
- 1:02:14Moving too fast. This is a silly thing.
- 1:02:17This thing is frivolous that you were up to do, were too fancy if
- 1:02:24you had running water or electricity, who needs that?
- 1:02:32Yeah, perspective. It's just this continual
- 1:02:35progression that some people let it get to them, some don't.
- 1:02:42What about you though 'cause? You've like, I've had
- 1:02:45conversations with you from time to time where it's like the
- 1:02:50opposite. You know, you're, you're out of
- 1:02:53touch in some ways with things because you're not integrated
- 1:02:57into that, you know? Social media.
- 1:03:02Internet thing like obviously you have those amenities, but
- 1:03:05it's not really, it's not really woven too deeply into your into
- 1:03:09your lifestyle it seems. Yeah, I have to catch myself a
- 1:03:15lot of times. And then there are times that I
- 1:03:18don't, but I'm fortunate enough to have friends that help me,
- 1:03:26sort of like you would catch your grandpa and be like, that's
- 1:03:30not socially acceptable or. You can't say that out loud,
- 1:03:36grandpa. It's just.
- 1:03:42Living in a different place and in such.
- 1:03:45An isolated place that. You're.
- 1:03:51You're not. In the same social spectrum, I
- 1:03:55guess I'm not as conditioned to the things happening in town or
- 1:04:04in the cities, or just the general shift of how and what
- 1:04:09life is now for the majority of people.
- 1:04:15So yeah, I'm. Glad to have friends that helped
- 1:04:19me with that and catch me on that.
- 1:04:23Where do you think the? Line.
- 1:04:27Is drawn. With because I think, you know,
- 1:04:30with as much as as is going on in the world today, the the
- 1:04:34social climate, the political climate, like so many things are
- 1:04:36going on in the world that divides people.
- 1:04:40Where do you think the line stands or or is drawn with being
- 1:04:50informed and in and or not informed?
- 1:04:54You know, do you think that there's a line to be crossed or
- 1:04:57that can be crossed with? Being not informed.
- 1:05:01Is a good thing. And I maybe, maybe not not.
- 1:05:06Informed. But like, you know, there,
- 1:05:07there's so much stuff that's out here that people can get lost in
- 1:05:09or, or can get absorbed in that they're like, have you seen
- 1:05:14this? Have you heard of that?
- 1:05:16And I'm like, no, I haven't. Why should I be concerned?
- 1:05:19You know, like, what does that have to do with me and my
- 1:05:21people, you know, or me, my circle or whatever?
- 1:05:23Like why, why do I worry about this thing that, oh, well, you
- 1:05:26should be and I really should I be, you know, like, do you ever
- 1:05:29think about that and the line between being informed and not
- 1:05:32informed and, and how that can the balance between all that?
- 1:05:36I think that's. Really a personal decision.
- 1:05:43Some people do. Want to know everything that's
- 1:05:46happening and some people are on that line of ignorance is bliss.
- 1:05:52If I don't know it. I'm not worried about it.
- 1:05:54If I'm not worried about it, I'm better off.
- 1:05:58So it's it's a really personal thing.
- 1:06:00How much do you care about your neighbor, your community, your
- 1:06:06friends? And then also.
- 1:06:10Realizing how much those things impact you or if they impact you
- 1:06:15at all. Some people they don't for.
- 1:06:18Hundreds and hundreds of. Years we've romanticized, or
- 1:06:22some people have romanticized the idea of the hermit to just
- 1:06:28get. Out be, out live.
- 1:06:30On your own. So again, it's really personal.
- 1:06:37Do you want that connection? With people, do you want that
- 1:06:41sense of community? And then if you do.
- 1:06:45You have to make. Sure that you're doing your part
- 1:06:47and part of doing your part is being informed about the issues
- 1:06:51that the community is facing. If you're not educated and
- 1:06:56you're not in that circle, you're out of touch.
- 1:06:58And that's outside of my work to pay the electric bill and.
- 1:07:06Put food on the table. The only reason that I really
- 1:07:09have social media or. Outlets for.
- 1:07:14News and information I do care about my neighbors and my
- 1:07:19community and extended community and.
- 1:07:24Really. Humanity overall, I don't think
- 1:07:31that any person on earth should be suffering.
- 1:07:36I think there are a ton of major issues that have.
- 1:07:41Plagued. The human species, for a long
- 1:07:45time that shouldn't be. I mean, we've come so far with
- 1:07:49so many things that there should not be any person on earth right
- 1:07:54now that goes hungry. We have the means and the
- 1:07:58capability to make sure that every person on Earth has a roof
- 1:08:05over their head. We should not have homelessness.
- 1:08:07And there are countries that have really embraced that idea
- 1:08:13and understanding of Finland. Guess what?
- 1:08:17Their homeless. Population is Finland.
- 1:08:20Yeah. I mean.
- 1:08:23Yeah, I would say I, I can't imagine with whatever their.
- 1:08:26Whatever their population. Is, but yeah, I, I that's that's
- 1:08:29good. There's not a.
- 1:08:32Single homeless person in the entire country, because they
- 1:08:36tackled it, they said this is something that we can solve so
- 1:08:40it can be done. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:44I mean it can be done. You look at, you look at an
- 1:08:46example like that, you know, I'm sure people might say, Oh, well,
- 1:08:49you know, they're, they're they're.
- 1:08:51They're a small. Country, you know, it's, it's
- 1:08:54easier to, to figure that out when you're talking, you know,
- 1:08:57about population of I don't know what the, what population of
- 1:09:00Finland is, but we'll just say, you know, 150,000 people.
- 1:09:03It's easier to figure that out when you know, you know, 3
- 1:09:07billion or 3 million people in a country, you know, different
- 1:09:10things. But hey, there's a model.
- 1:09:12I feel like you know if one. Fraction of the population of
- 1:09:16Helsinki. Yeah, right.
- 1:09:22But yeah, it's a. It's a really good question.
- 1:09:24Where is that line? Because there's that.
- 1:09:28Old, old. Sentiment.
- 1:09:30Mind your own business. If it doesn't involve you, then
- 1:09:35don't involve yourself. You know, don't put yourself
- 1:09:38where you're not asked to be. So it's a really, really
- 1:09:42personal thing. Yeah.
- 1:09:44And I. Agree with that because you know
- 1:09:45you also have. You you also have.
- 1:09:49The, the, the nature of, of certain people to be activists
- 1:09:53for movements and things, you know, and they make it their
- 1:09:55business to get involved and, and to be informed and, and
- 1:10:00there's a need for that too. You know what I mean?
- 1:10:03That not everybody's going to be that person, but there
- 1:10:07definitely is a need for that feel like.
- 1:10:10People down the road. Like I don't care about your
- 1:10:12argument over whose dog went on the whose property, but if a
- 1:10:19logging company comes in. I'm going to involve myself.
- 1:10:25Right. Yeah, again, it's very.
- 1:10:27Personal It comes down to what you care about, what you value,
- 1:10:31what you see as important. I think value is a good word.
- 1:10:34What you value. Do you value community?
- 1:10:37Do you value the environment? Do you value social justice as
- 1:10:43part of valuing other human beings?
- 1:10:47Because it's still an ugly, ugly, nasty, very, very real
- 1:10:54thing that's happening even today.
- 1:10:56We think social justice, you think back to the civil rights
- 1:11:01movement and like days gone by, but it is far, far, far from
- 1:11:07being a thing of the past. Right.
- 1:11:12Oh yeah, I mean, it's. It's my ultimate answer.
- 1:11:15Would have to be. It's, it's very personal where
- 1:11:18that line falls. Yeah.
- 1:11:20Yeah. You can't just give one answer
- 1:11:22and have it be applicable to everyone situation or everyone
- 1:11:25person or even everyone demographic.
- 1:11:28Yeah, it's. Subjective.
- 1:11:30It's situational, yeah. It's.
- 1:11:32Personal, yeah. And I think, you know, I think.
- 1:11:37With some of the work that folks like you do with your crafting,
- 1:11:42there's, there's a degree of involvement that whether you
- 1:11:50intend to or not, you know, you, you're, you're.
- 1:11:55You're providing. Yes, you're providing a service,
- 1:11:58but part of your service is to create tools.
- 1:12:04That people can. Use to navigate the landscape
- 1:12:09of. These things that we're talking.
- 1:12:12About the rattles, the drums, the various, you know, works of
- 1:12:17spirit and, and, and stuff that that people are looking for
- 1:12:21nowadays. And I was wondering if if you've
- 1:12:23seen with with everything that we're talking about, you know,
- 1:12:26the way that the political social climates and everything
- 1:12:29have have. Elevated and and.
- 1:12:33Escalated and it's, you know, there's it's extreme now it's
- 1:12:36it's it's it's radical to to to to even put another word to it,
- 1:12:39I think. And in a lot of ways.
- 1:12:42Do you think that? Do you?
- 1:12:47Think that there's. A lesser, greater, or equal.
- 1:12:52Push to. Connect with our spirituality
- 1:12:56Now, then before let's say five years ago when you were crafting
- 1:13:01and then getting into the crafting, you know, do you have
- 1:13:03you seen that that need to connect with spirit?
- 1:13:08Grow. Maintain lessen.
- 1:13:15Can you? Can you quantify that?
- 1:13:16Have you seen that? Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:13:21More increasing, steadily increasing.
- 1:13:26More and more people are coming away from organized religion to
- 1:13:32spirituality. And I think it's.
- 1:13:37It's a generational thing. It's exposure to resources with
- 1:13:43the Internet, with peers talking, having conversations
- 1:13:49that maybe 20-30 years ago would have been considered social faux
- 1:13:54pas. You don't talk about those
- 1:13:55things with people. You don't talk about religion,
- 1:13:58you don't talk about politics. But now we're having those
- 1:14:01conversations. The people have kind of like
- 1:14:03shed off that. I was told not to.
- 1:14:08Do this, but now they're asking why?
- 1:14:11Why was I told not to talk about it?
- 1:14:13Why was I told not to ask about it?
- 1:14:16And so we're. Having these.
- 1:14:17Conversations and. A.
- 1:14:21A veil. Is being lifted, I think, and
- 1:14:26people are seeing through some of the.
- 1:14:31I don't want to say tactics. But previous allure of organized
- 1:14:36religion, feeling a part of something, being a member of
- 1:14:40something. And then there's that structure,
- 1:14:43too. People love structure.
- 1:14:46They love order. It's why so many people are
- 1:14:51really drawn to the military. It provides that structure, that
- 1:14:56order, that organization. You know what to do, when to do
- 1:14:59it, how to do it. There's routine, just like with
- 1:15:04Christianity, there's routine. There's Wednesday service,
- 1:15:06there's someday service, there's Sunday evening service.
- 1:15:09You have your holidays or observances.
- 1:15:15As. People as beings, a lot of.
- 1:15:19People are really. Drawn to that, but at the same
- 1:15:22time, a lot of people are starting to ask themselves why?
- 1:15:25What am I getting out of it? Is it helping me at all?
- 1:15:29Is it helping my growth? And then I think COVID.
- 1:15:35Helped a whole lot in the last five years for people to return
- 1:15:39to nature and spirituality. There for a long time.
- 1:15:46There really wasn't a whole lot that you could get out to do
- 1:15:49other than. Go to nature there was.
- 1:15:52Social distancing, you couldn't be within 6 feet of another
- 1:15:55person. So people were revisiting state
- 1:15:59parks, the national parks, their community parks, being outdoors
- 1:16:05and realizing how good that feels to breathe some real air,
- 1:16:11not some stuffed up apartment air or recirculated recycled
- 1:16:16air, but to get out there and feel the grass and be with the
- 1:16:22trees and hear the birds and see squirrels and things that they
- 1:16:26weren't really ever thinking about because you were plugged
- 1:16:30in either. To a vice.
- 1:16:32Or other people. So yeah, there was that.
- 1:16:37That whole big shift with COVID but then organized religion is
- 1:16:41really pushing a lot of people away, especially the more they
- 1:16:44become political. They're.
- 1:16:48Being very. Openly political and I think
- 1:16:51that's a big turn off for people.
- 1:16:55It's now impacting their connection with divine.
- 1:17:02Our political turmoil is now. Causing problems.
- 1:17:08With how we feel in our connections to whoever or
- 1:17:12whatever we see as God, we're being told on top of how we're
- 1:17:18already being told how to think, what to think, who to like, who
- 1:17:21not to like, what to do, which way to lean, how to vote.
- 1:17:27And so people are like, no, that's just.
- 1:17:33Not for me. Yeah.
- 1:17:35I enjoyed some. Aspects of this.
- 1:17:39Part of my life. But it's gotten to be too much,
- 1:17:43so I'm going to back away from it.
- 1:17:46And so like I said, there are people by the thousands every
- 1:17:49year coming away from the church, coming away from
- 1:17:52organized religion. And I'm not picking on any
- 1:17:55organized religion, you know, although I mentioned the church
- 1:17:58and used a few other examples. I've tried to be more careful.
- 1:18:05With that here lately it's it's that's one of those social cues
- 1:18:10that some of my friends will catch me on that you might want
- 1:18:13to word that differently. I'm personally very strong
- 1:18:22headed when it comes. To.
- 1:18:24Organized religion and its impact on the world.
- 1:18:29Humanity. Society.
- 1:18:32Culture. Community.
- 1:18:34Oh yeah. Please let us.
- 1:18:37Look at the religious. Wars, all of the atrocities that
- 1:18:42have been committed in the name of religion.
- 1:18:44And that's not any specific religion, but all organized
- 1:18:48religion. And again, we're getting access
- 1:18:53to the truth and education is more readily available.
- 1:18:59You've got the Internet with all of these resources.
- 1:19:04You don't have to try to catch something on The History Channel
- 1:19:07anymore like it was 20 years ago, or check out a library
- 1:19:11book. You can open up your computer
- 1:19:14and you can find actual truth about.
- 1:19:18Some of these. Events, even though they've been
- 1:19:19painted in a much different light over the years.
- 1:19:24Yeah, the. Information is, is way more
- 1:19:27accessible now than ever. It has than it ever has been.
- 1:19:30I mean, we've, we've been in the information age now for a good
- 1:19:34bit, you know, for, for a good, for a good long while.
- 1:19:38And isn't that an? Interesting correlation.
- 1:19:41The more people have access to information, the more they're
- 1:19:46coming away from organized religion and finding
- 1:19:48spirituality. They're making that connection
- 1:19:51for themselves, with themselves. Rather than going.
- 1:19:56To a middle person to do it, I don't have to go to a pastor, I
- 1:20:01don't have to go to a priest, I don't have to go to a church to
- 1:20:04connect with God. Even if you're a Christian
- 1:20:06person. Christian people are still
- 1:20:10maintaining their faith and their beliefs, but they're
- 1:20:12coming away from the organization of it.
- 1:20:14They've stopped going to Sunday service, they've stopped going
- 1:20:18to Mass, They've stopped going to confession.
- 1:20:21Because they're learning that. It's in each and every one of us
- 1:20:26to be able to connect. I was talking with.
- 1:20:30Somebody. Yes.
- 1:20:34Yesterday and this guy who I am talking about, he is and we've
- 1:20:42been friends for, I don't know quite a quite a few years now
- 1:20:47more than just a few really, but he is a a devout Muslim.
- 1:20:54He speaks Arabic. You know, he's, he's American
- 1:20:56from West Virginia, but he's, he's, he's about.
- 1:21:00Didn't you visit him in the hospital?
- 1:21:03Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:21:07And oddly enough, like him and I also met through through social
- 1:21:10media, he was, he was a content creator doing like hot pepper
- 1:21:14reviews and stuff. And I was into hot Peppers and
- 1:21:18through that community, through the chili head community, like I
- 1:21:21found him and turned out, Oh, wow, you live in the same city
- 1:21:23that I do, you know, so we, we connected and, and became
- 1:21:28friends through through that, through those means.
- 1:21:32But he and I have had very in depth conversations about
- 1:21:35spirituality and faith and, and stuff.
- 1:21:39And neither one of us are trying to push each other's beliefs on,
- 1:21:43on things or, you know, onto one another.
- 1:21:47But, but you know, one of the things like we were, we were
- 1:21:51talking yesterday about his, he has this real, he has a lot of
- 1:22:02medical issues and, and has for a very long time.
- 1:22:06But we, we, we start talking about mental health, you know,
- 1:22:08and antidepressants and, and all of these things.
- 1:22:12And he's like, yeah, I've been on every SSRI available.
- 1:22:15They don't do nothing for me, you know.
- 1:22:20And I said, you know, we we get to.
- 1:22:22Talking about just what? What kind of medicine?
- 1:22:26What medicine is you know? And medicine comes in many.
- 1:22:31Forms medicine is not the same for everybody.
- 1:22:33It inspired me to write something after our conversation
- 1:22:37talking about, you know, my medicine is not your medicine.
- 1:22:40What works for me may not work for you.
- 1:22:42And it kind of goes into what we're talking about now with,
- 1:22:44you know, religion or spirituality.
- 1:22:46But the spirituality is universal.
- 1:22:48You don't have to. Label it any one.
- 1:22:51Particular thing it's, it's if you're a Christian, you can be
- 1:22:56spiritual, if you're Muslim, you can be spiritual, if you're
- 1:22:58heathen, if you're Pagan, if you're non denominational
- 1:23:00Buddhist, whatever Taoist Toltec, you know, like Druid it
- 1:23:04you could put a label to anything.
- 1:23:07A lot of that just involves what your, how you view the world,
- 1:23:12you know, how your world view is informed.
- 1:23:13But spirituality is, is universal.
- 1:23:16And we got to talking about this, this idea of, of healing
- 1:23:20and, and what healing is. And it's like, you know,
- 1:23:24there's, there's always this, this look of at least in the
- 1:23:28Western world of medicine, it's, you know, what can I take, what
- 1:23:33can I absorb, what can I consume to fix this part of me?
- 1:23:40I got this problem this. Thing or the other what what
- 1:23:42pill can I take What what's you know what, what can I do?
- 1:23:45And I go the healing. 'S within.
- 1:23:48You know, finding, finding that and discovering that, you know,
- 1:23:53it takes work, but it it, it's, you know.
- 1:23:56Don't rely so much on. The on the tool, you know this
- 1:24:01is just this, it's part of it, but but really figure out in the
- 1:24:05healings within us. It always has been and.
- 1:24:09And that. Awakening to that spirituality
- 1:24:11that they were talking about and and breaking away from those
- 1:24:13chains of organized religion that that restrict that healing
- 1:24:18from taking place because it's it's it's confined around a
- 1:24:21dogma of sorts and you kind. Of get a a.
- 1:24:26One-size-fits-all approach to it.
- 1:24:30And that's the big problem with physical health too.
- 1:24:33Well, not just physical health, but mental health is too many
- 1:24:36people have. A prescription writer.
- 1:24:39Instead of a doctor. Right, it's that.
- 1:24:45Mass manufactured Pharmaceutical industry, it's kind of taken
- 1:24:51hold. So we're not.
- 1:24:55Understanding. How important.
- 1:24:59And how interconnected? All things are in that holistic
- 1:25:02health approach that getting out and getting some sunlight and
- 1:25:06some fresh air is going. To do you some damn.
- 1:25:09Good. Not just your body in the
- 1:25:12physical sense, your lungs, your respiratory system, your
- 1:25:16circulatory system, but your mental health as well.
- 1:25:19And all these things are connected.
- 1:25:21And we're missing so much of that goodness.
- 1:25:26That should be a regimen that we get from nature.
- 1:25:30So now we do have all of these health problems.
- 1:25:34And I I think. Another big, big part of it is
- 1:25:37the food industry. We're eating garbage.
- 1:25:42We're drinking garbage. We're giving ourselves cancer,
- 1:25:47literally. Yeah, we're poisoning.
- 1:25:50Ourselves, you know, or, or we're being poisoned.
- 1:25:54Also that someone. Else can get rich off of it,
- 1:25:58yeah, but it's it goes back to that convenience.
- 1:26:00It's easy. It's easier to do than to grow a
- 1:26:04garden or to harvest things yourselves.
- 1:26:09It's it's that. Trade off, it's that pay off.
- 1:26:12And like you mentioned, is it worth it for convenience?
- 1:26:16Yeah. And we've decided.
- 1:26:19As a society, that it's absolutely worth it to kill
- 1:26:24ourselves and make ourselves sick and make our children sick
- 1:26:29so that we can have it a little easier, a little quicker.
- 1:26:32Ain't that sound more? Available.
- 1:26:36Yeah, I mean, you can't gain say.
- 1:26:40That it's, you know, it, it definitely causes you to stop,
- 1:26:48put things into perspective and go, you know, wow, what's
- 1:26:51really, what are, what are we doing here?
- 1:26:56And I, you know, I've, I've talked before, like, you know,
- 1:26:58so much of what this podcast has become has been an outlet to
- 1:27:02talk about issues, you know, and it's a heathen podcast.
- 1:27:06So there's a lot of heathen worldview added to it.
- 1:27:11But it also just gets random. And that's, that's the beauty of
- 1:27:13it is we, we go off on these things and we go and this is
- 1:27:16this is I think. I was talking last.
- 1:27:20Week about earth worship or earth veneration you know the
- 1:27:26the and and how that was observed or done by by Germanic
- 1:27:29people specifically and yeah sure we can go and we can look
- 1:27:32at sources that that definitely support.
- 1:27:37The the the. The share or the, the collective
- 1:27:41approach that dramatic tribes had of, of the importance of the
- 1:27:43earth. But it was, it was a, was it
- 1:27:45worshipping the earth or was it, or was it venerating and it and,
- 1:27:49and worshipping the, the essence of nature combined with
- 1:27:53everything you know, and, and, and how much we've as as modern
- 1:28:01heathens, modern people. But I, you know, and I was using
- 1:28:04the, the example of modern heathens.
- 1:28:05I'm like, you guys, you know, you want to talk about how the
- 1:28:07importance of earth. And then when, when you, you,
- 1:28:10you have an event or, or a, or a public meet up or something like
- 1:28:14that and it's a little bit too hot or too humid or it's raining
- 1:28:17or it's chilly, you go, no, I'm not going to go.
- 1:28:21But yet this is. The earth that you claim to hold
- 1:28:24such a sacred view of and and and and have such an important
- 1:28:29role placed upon. What are you doing to to to to
- 1:28:35connect with her? What are you doing to be a part
- 1:28:38of her? And, and because you are, we are
- 1:28:42nature. We are, you know, everything
- 1:28:44that makes up nature, the universe.
- 1:28:47Enough. This.
- 1:28:47This Is Us. I mean science backs.
- 1:28:51It up and then that's, you know. You.
- 1:28:54You're you're. Devoid you're, you're devoid of
- 1:28:56that you're, you're keeping yourself away from it.
- 1:28:59You're you're not this, you're not connecting with her on a
- 1:29:02regular basis. I think.
- 1:29:06When it comes to Earth worship. Or veneration.
- 1:29:08So many of those ancient cultures or communities, it
- 1:29:12wasn't just in the idea that nature is good for us, but the
- 1:29:17literal fact that nature was nurturing them.
- 1:29:21It's they relied on it. It was your.
- 1:29:25Food. Source.
- 1:29:26It was your your drinking water. It was irrigation, it was
- 1:29:30travel, it was everything your home.
- 1:29:34Your food. Our strive for convenience come
- 1:29:37so far away from that. So now you see, like you
- 1:29:40mentioned, you'll have these events outdoors and even just in
- 1:29:44general. Everything is haloed and hail
- 1:29:48Thor, hail this one, zoos or whatever.
- 1:29:51But we're forgetting the importance of those ideas or
- 1:29:58deities assigned to fertility and fertility of the land.
- 1:30:05We're forgetting about things like planting and harvesting.
- 1:30:09It's just feast. We're not thinking about.
- 1:30:14What it took to have a good growing season, or how important
- 1:30:19that was to people and why there were so many deities and so many
- 1:30:26forms of offering and sacrifice that were carried out by these
- 1:30:30ancient cultures and communities.
- 1:30:34They depended on it. To get through the winter, to
- 1:30:37get through the lean times, even just to eat day-to-day.
- 1:30:42So you've got all these. Ones I'm going to try.
- 1:30:45To jog my memory here a little bit for some of these Norse
- 1:30:49references, I know a lot of the the listeners or viewers here
- 1:30:53are going to align in that way. The forest.
- 1:31:01Oh yeah. The.
- 1:31:03Bounty of the forest, the hunt deer, the wild Thor, the
- 1:31:08rabbits, The forest was your food source.
- 1:31:12All of the foraging, the wild mushrooms, all the medicinal
- 1:31:15plants that grew. He reigned over the forest, but
- 1:31:21you don't see so much veneration there anymore.
- 1:31:25And I like I said, everything's Odin, Thor or get into the other
- 1:31:31side with Loki and all that. Yeah.
- 1:31:35Even tear. You know, war gods these these
- 1:31:38Acer drive of gods or the OR the because they're easy.
- 1:31:42Now our travel is easy. Now we're not thinking about
- 1:31:45having to cross the damn ocean on a ship and need good weather,
- 1:31:49need a good wind. So we're not honoring or
- 1:31:52venerating those ideas or those spirits or those deities the
- 1:31:57same anymore. We've.
- 1:31:59Disconnected from. It by our strive for convenience
- 1:32:04and again it goes back to at what cost.
- 1:32:07So are you are you actually appreciating any of these things
- 1:32:13through that disconnect? Were you kind of half assing it
- 1:32:19or are they just not relevant anymore?
- 1:32:22We don't need a favorable wind to sail.
- 1:32:26We don't need a good rain for the crops.
- 1:32:28We can manufacture rain. We can grow strawberries in a
- 1:32:32laboratory if we need to. We've got these mega farms with
- 1:32:37cows and pigs and chickens and more food than we could ever eat
- 1:32:42in a lifetime, and we're throwing almost half of it away
- 1:32:45while people are starving. Yeah, you know.
- 1:32:52Well, then you get into. The, you know, the actual like,
- 1:32:55OK, it's convenient, you know, greenhouse man, you know,
- 1:32:58greenhouse effect that or not greenhouse effect.
- 1:33:00But like, you know, you say these, you know, mass produced
- 1:33:05vegetables and fruits and even livestock or or or animals, you
- 1:33:08know where they're just, they're pumped full of hormones.
- 1:33:13It's not good for you to consider like sure, you know,
- 1:33:15you get 100 lbs of berries, but it's empty.
- 1:33:18There's nothing that's. Nutritionally.
- 1:33:22Sound to these things. Why?
- 1:33:24Because they're not given the chance to grow naturally,
- 1:33:29organically in the earth that nurtures.
- 1:33:32It's just the other day we were going.
- 1:33:34Through the grocery store and Cindy mentioned wanting to get a
- 1:33:39basket of strawberries I. Walked over there.
- 1:33:43And looked at them and it was like, what?
- 1:33:46In the. World is this that like the size
- 1:33:48of your hand? I have never seen.
- 1:33:51Strawberries like this in my life.
- 1:33:53I'm not getting these, no. Way I'm eating that.
- 1:33:57Genetically modified. Fruits and and and stuff, man,
- 1:34:00it's, it's crazy. I mean within all the stuff.
- 1:34:04That we've become too good to eat.
- 1:34:09There are so many different plants out there.
- 1:34:13Fruits, vegetables even. And the meats that.
- 1:34:20We harvest so many of those things we've kind of, in a way,
- 1:34:24become too good for. Organ.
- 1:34:27Meats, neck, things like that. And then you get to see every.
- 1:34:34Once in a while. Some of these, really.
- 1:34:37Really interesting things that grow in abundance that we just
- 1:34:41don't know. Because ask anybody, name three
- 1:34:45vegetables, they're going to tell you like apple, orange,
- 1:34:48banana. But then there's all the stuff.
- 1:34:51There's jackfruit, there's star fruit, dragon fruit, like just
- 1:34:54all these different things, all these different berries that are
- 1:34:58edible and that our ancestors ate as a staple.
- 1:35:03But we've had a hard. Time mass producing those things
- 1:35:09in either a lab setting or a corporate type farm setting.
- 1:35:13So. Yeah, no, there's the entire.
- 1:35:21Forest is just full yeah, yeah hold back coming back to your
- 1:35:29your point about the earth veneration and.
- 1:35:32I think it's a big. Part of the the disconnect.
- 1:35:35Our strive for convenience. We've disconnected those
- 1:35:41fertility gods and goddesses and the spirits and.
- 1:35:48Yeah. And I want to see that come back
- 1:35:51and I see it. I mean, I do.
- 1:35:52It is, you know, it's like one of those things where I, I, I
- 1:35:55talk about, I talk a bit about stuff and I look OK.
- 1:35:59Well, five years ago, where were things, you know, where were
- 1:36:02people? Well, I was observing, right?
- 1:36:04What did I see then versus what do I see now?
- 1:36:08And I think like you say, you. Know you we definitely see an
- 1:36:11increase or a rise in people realizing the importance of of
- 1:36:17these things. Maybe not where we would like to
- 1:36:20be or where we what we would like to see in the amount that
- 1:36:24we would like to see it, but I think it's it's.
- 1:36:28Trending in the direction we would.
- 1:36:29Hope for and it's like this, this opposition, you know, we,
- 1:36:35we you know, so much craziness, so much I'll so much baleful
- 1:36:40things happening. It's like, well, where's the
- 1:36:41balance now? You know, we're we're all, you
- 1:36:45know, overpopulation and and corporate greed and things are
- 1:36:51bounding and it's OK. So, so where's the where's the
- 1:36:54balance to it all? You know, where are the people
- 1:36:56that are? Doing the work to.
- 1:37:00To preserve. What's going to keep us?
- 1:37:05Alive versus what you know what I mean?
- 1:37:07And thrive versus what we're just going to do to get by for
- 1:37:11the convenience sake of it all I want.
- 1:37:14People to understand. Something also those that are
- 1:37:16watching or listening this, this shift or this movement coming to
- 1:37:22spirituality isn't without its faults.
- 1:37:29It's just as. Dangerous as any organized
- 1:37:33religion can be, because a lot of these people are coming out
- 1:37:37of organized religion to that spirituality that then.
- 1:37:44That original? Sickness, greed comes in greed
- 1:37:48for popularity, greed for money, wealth, numbers, followers.
- 1:37:57So if you're coming out of organized religion to
- 1:38:00spirituality and something looks welcoming, something, it's very
- 1:38:06similar to what I'm leaving. So it, it might feel warm and
- 1:38:11fit well. But be careful because dogma
- 1:38:16exists in these spiritual circles just as much so as any
- 1:38:22church or mosque or temple. It's out there, yeah.
- 1:38:31And. People will, people will exploit
- 1:38:33almost anything if they can, you know, they'll, they'll, they'll
- 1:38:37find a way to, I mean you. Got those those?
- 1:38:41What was that? What was that back in the 90s,
- 1:38:44Madam, She was like an online she's a fortune teller.
- 1:38:48You call her on the phone. What was her name?
- 1:38:51The one that. Comes to mind from is Miss Cleo.
- 1:38:54Miss Cleo? Yeah.
- 1:38:55Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Those types of ones, you know
- 1:38:57what I mean? Like those, those charlatans,
- 1:38:58those, those people out there that are just in it to, to make
- 1:39:01a buck under the guise of, you know, spirituality, healing this
- 1:39:07now. Everybody, everybody is a
- 1:39:10shaman. Everybody's a guru.
- 1:39:12Everybody is a Yogi that wants your following, that wants your
- 1:39:17dollar too. Yeah.
- 1:39:20I mean, I believe that. That healers and, and, and stuff
- 1:39:24have a place in, in, in modern society and that because of
- 1:39:29modern society's construct of, you know, you got to have money
- 1:39:34to keep the lights on and to pay your bills and this and that.
- 1:39:36There's, there is it, there is an appropriate level of equal
- 1:39:41exchange of services for, for coin, you know what I mean?
- 1:39:44So I'm not saying that every healer out here who's charging
- 1:39:47for their services is bullshit. Yeah, not saying that, I'm
- 1:39:52saying that. Be careful.
- 1:39:56Because there's a lot of that out there, you know?
- 1:39:58Yeah. Compensation, absolutely.
- 1:40:01If you're providing a good or service, you should be
- 1:40:05compensated. And it's fair.
- 1:40:06I've always been a big fan of the barter system, but we've
- 1:40:09come to a place that we don't really use that.
- 1:40:12Like I can't go down to Blue Ridge Energy and pay my electric
- 1:40:16bill with a drone. So I make the.
- 1:40:19Drum and I sell the drum and then I take that down to Blue
- 1:40:23Ridge Energy to to keep this light on here.
- 1:40:26See what you need. Man is you need a bunch of drums
- 1:40:29that will continuously produce a rhythm and that rhythm, those
- 1:40:35Hertz will transfer as energy and that your your house is run
- 1:40:38by drum rhythm. Or just go back to.
- 1:40:44Candles, beeswax and then kerosene, you know.
- 1:40:49Oil lamps and this and that. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:40:51Living so. Isolated, if I didn't have
- 1:40:56electricity it would be difficult.
- 1:41:00Most of my sales are online and all over the world.
- 1:41:04So we've definitely got to have some electricity here to power
- 1:41:09that Internet and the satellite dish on top of the house that
- 1:41:14gives us Internet. That might sound funny to some
- 1:41:17people. I know.
- 1:41:19Most have like broadband, I think it's called, or, Oh yeah,
- 1:41:25Internet, an actual line or something.
- 1:41:28But we use a satellite to get Internet here and it does pretty
- 1:41:33good. I'm just thinking now like we,
- 1:41:40we've, we've, we've talked about a lot.
- 1:41:42You've asked me a lot of questions.
- 1:41:43I've asked you some questions. We've had a lot of great
- 1:41:45discourse, you know, conversation back and forth.
- 1:41:50But I do want to be respectful of your time and think about
- 1:41:55closing out this episode, this, you know, fifth year reminder
- 1:41:59anniversary of, of what kind of launched our, our kinship.
- 1:42:03And I think of, you know, this, this relationship as being, you
- 1:42:08know, we, we talk about fire on the mountain, we talk about
- 1:42:11spirituality, we talk about these things and, and they
- 1:42:13remind me of. Light and a flame.
- 1:42:17You know, and, and we have you and I, you know, we've, we've
- 1:42:21kindled this, this flame, this brotherly flame.
- 1:42:28And sometimes, you know, my flame is a bit dimmed and you
- 1:42:34help reinvigorate that flame, you know, and maybe sometimes
- 1:42:38yours is a bit damn. And I can help whatever breathe
- 1:42:42new life or, or, or waken that flame up for you.
- 1:42:44So that way you don't, you're not sitting in the dark.
- 1:42:49I guess I would just I. Would ask, you know.
- 1:42:56What's what's it? Going to be in the next 5 years,
- 1:42:59where are we going to be? And when we go, when we look
- 1:43:01back and we go out, 10 years has come since that first interview,
- 1:43:04you know, in five since since the since this one.
- 1:43:11What do? You think it's going to be?
- 1:43:12In five years. Well, with my.
- 1:43:18Understanding of the world and the time that I've spent on it,
- 1:43:23I. Think in another.
- 1:43:24Five years. We'll have this.
- 1:43:28Conversation, but we'll still be talking about people coming away
- 1:43:32from organized religion. We'll still be talking about.
- 1:43:37Our food sources. Our conveniences just the same
- 1:43:41as we mentioned, like our grandparents complain about
- 1:43:44things now, their grandparents complained about things then and
- 1:43:47there's before them and them. So I guess.
- 1:43:54The bones of it is just how we continue to navigate it.
- 1:43:58All change is ever present and ongoing.
- 1:44:05So the conversation pieces come in how we navigate that.
- 1:44:09And I think that's what made this opportunity so special is
- 1:44:15that you and I that have navigated these last five years
- 1:44:19changes in our ways, but some of those things don't really get to
- 1:44:24be talked about. In your work or?
- 1:44:30In my work. So this was a great way to come
- 1:44:32together, have conversation and share some of those things with
- 1:44:36your listeners and your viewers and kind of drives that home a
- 1:44:43little bit for random heathen ramblings.
- 1:44:47It's a couple of heathens coming on here and they said we've
- 1:44:50talked about our food sources, travel, electricity, medicine,
- 1:44:57fire on the mountain, community, the Internet, social media is.
- 1:45:03Yeah. Random heathen ramblings. 5
- 1:45:06years of us Yeah rambling on and still finding value.
- 1:45:13Like say, you know, like it's, it's great.
- 1:45:15I, I love I and guys that you know, people that listen or
- 1:45:19watch this, you know, you, you do you get a bit of a, a, a
- 1:45:23sneak peek or behind the scenes. View of of.
- 1:45:31How you know, he and I interact. This is very much like what we
- 1:45:36do in person. You know, we, we don't, this
- 1:45:38isn't not, this isn't a show. We're not scripted here in, in
- 1:45:42terms of we're not putting on a performance for you.
- 1:45:45We're talking about things that in this format that we've talked
- 1:45:49about in person, you know, yeah, we could do some.
- 1:45:53Some deep shit and some conversations, but I do want to
- 1:45:58say that I have been a little. Self governed in.
- 1:46:03This just to be respectful to your audience, listeners and
- 1:46:08viewers. Not in this.
- 1:46:11Setting. As Jesse was saying, our these
- 1:46:13are normal conversations, but. The language might be a.
- 1:46:18Little bit, yeah, Yeah. More.
- 1:46:21Laughs. I'm a bit more loose when we're
- 1:46:24just one-on-one, yeah. A few less.
- 1:46:27F bombs are here or there, you know that type of thing.
- 1:46:31Yeah, there's definitely, you know, there's definitely that
- 1:46:33candidness that we but but you get you get a glimpse of it, you
- 1:46:36get a you get a hint of it. And this has been a great show
- 1:46:39of that without overhearing to be respectful of.
- 1:46:43Jesse the platform and also you guys watching or listening
- 1:46:49wherever you are. Yeah, if you want the
- 1:46:53unfiltered. Version of anything that I have
- 1:46:57to talk on. As far as any of these topics,
- 1:47:00please reach out, I'm always glad to share.
- 1:47:05Yeah. And that's that's another.
- 1:47:06Thing too, brother, I appreciate your accessibility to, to
- 1:47:11people. I know you, you, you come very
- 1:47:13highly respected When I shared that, that this was going to be
- 1:47:18our podcast for the week on I think Facebook or wherever it
- 1:47:23was, you know, I definitely saw the admiration for you come
- 1:47:27through in the comments saying, hey, that's pretty cool, dude.
- 1:47:30I mean, yes, that's a that's a that's one way of saying it, But
- 1:47:34you know, you're highly respected.
- 1:47:36You do a lot of good work and the genuineness of that work is,
- 1:47:41is speaks for itself. But I, I do appreciate you
- 1:47:46coming on here to ask me questions, talk about things and
- 1:47:50just, and just kind of reminisce, you know, 2 old, 2
- 1:47:52old, 2 middle-aged guys, whatever here just talking about
- 1:47:55times and stuff has been great. So I think in the next 5 years,
- 1:48:02I definitely they'll be, you know, I don't know, you might
- 1:48:07age grace more gracefully than I do because my Gray has has
- 1:48:09really shown through more within the last five years than than
- 1:48:14anything else. So it'll definitely be a little
- 1:48:16bit grayer, maybe, you know, a few pounds lighter or heavier
- 1:48:20respectively. But still still great
- 1:48:24conversation. I've learned a lot from you.
- 1:48:28You've inspired me to embrace, you know, things that that I've
- 1:48:36grown beautifully through things that I've learned through your
- 1:48:41guidance and through your mentorship have really helped
- 1:48:45shape me into the man that I am and and and becoming.
- 1:48:47So it's it's. It's been great and.
- 1:48:52I appreciate you for that. So thank you and thank you.
- 1:48:55Right back at you, brother. Likewise, it's been a blessing
- 1:49:01to share in this friendship and brothership with you over the
- 1:49:06last five years. Absolutely.
- 1:49:10Let's keep it going, you know, Let's keep that brotherly flame
- 1:49:13going. Let's keep that.
- 1:49:14Let's keep that fire lit A. 100%.
