Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The conversation started with her screaming that a ghost was
- 0:04Speaker 1: in the house and the house was.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Hunted because I caught my man cheating, so I burned
- 0:08Speaker 2: his house down.
- 0:10Speaker 3: We paid her based on her word, but now know
- 0:13Speaker 3: that her brother did not die and she was lying
- 0:17Speaker 3: from day one.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Oh, this is the Bad Hire, the show with the
- 0:21Speaker 1: best stories about the worst employees.
- 0:24Speaker 3: We fired him.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Of course, people are crazy. It's like an hr nightmare rife.
- 0:28Speaker 1: One Bad Hire stole all of it crazy stuff.
- 0:32Speaker 4: She got what she deserved.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Oh, I'm your host, Ken Monroe, and every week we
- 0:37Speaker 1: dive into real life stories from the wild world of
- 0:41Speaker 1: work and what can happen when the wrong person gets
- 0:45Speaker 1: the job. These stories aren't just crazy when they are
- 0:48Speaker 1: cautionary tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's get started.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Hey everyone, and welcome back to The Bad Hire, the
- 0:56Speaker 1: show with the best stories about the worst employees. So
- 1:02Speaker 1: welcome back, as I'm happy to have you. This is
- 1:04Speaker 1: Morgan and Emma. Hi, guys, Hi, So we get we good.
- 1:08Speaker 1: We good to get back. Yep, it's been a while.
- 1:10Speaker 1: We take a little bit of break for the holidays,
- 1:12Speaker 1: for sure. Yeah, I don't know that it'll be a
- 1:14Speaker 1: break when the release schedule, but we didn't. Yeah, we
- 1:17Speaker 1: have a shot since before Christmas, so it's fun.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We shot last week, not last week, but week before
- 1:21Speaker 3: last with Nathan.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Oh, I don't remember. I was just telling you I
- 1:33Speaker 1: watched clips. I watched some clips, and I'll be like,
- 1:35Speaker 1: oh my god, I don't remember that. I don't remember
- 1:37Speaker 1: doing that. I don't remember sending that. Yeah, it's pretty
- 1:41Speaker 1: pretty funny. Oh my gosh. So you know the drill.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Every week we dive into the wildest and weirdest. Uh,
- 1:46Speaker 1: some jaw dropping stories for real. You guys shocked me
- 1:49Speaker 1: at which' s growned up. But what's really kind of
- 1:52Speaker 1: cool right now is that a lot of we're starting
- 1:56Speaker 1: to get a lot of submissions and a lot of
- 1:58Speaker 1: guest requests, and we're so we're getting submissions online. Our
- 2:03Speaker 1: our email outred outreach to people that we think would
- 2:06Speaker 1: be great on the show is starting to do results.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I think we have how many guests in the pipeline
- 2:13Speaker 1: pipeline right now that we're interviewing.
- 2:14Speaker 5: Five active guests in the pipeline right now, sixty five guests,
- 2:20Speaker 5: sixty five people lined up to try to come on
- 2:21Speaker 5: the show, and so what we're doing now is we're
- 2:23Speaker 5: shooting some segments with them and stead of coming and
- 2:26Speaker 5: trying to coordinate everyone's schedule to get here on the couch,
- 2:29Speaker 5: you know, one of the producers, you.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Or Nathan, you guys are Nathan, reach out.
- 2:34Speaker 6: To them and do a one on one segment with
- 2:38Speaker 6: them and just get to know them and then let
- 2:40Speaker 6: them tell their stories. And it sounds like it's it's
- 2:43Speaker 6: working pretty well and it's pretty cool.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I think I think we played one now. I remember
- 2:48Speaker 1: h yes, because we played the we we played the
- 2:53Speaker 1: clip from the recruiter from zoom Yes yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 1: that was a nuts nuts so and so those are
- 3:00Speaker 1: starting to line up and stack up, and so we
- 3:02Speaker 1: encourage you to keep going. You know, if you're if
- 3:04Speaker 1: you've got a story you want to be on the show.
- 3:06Speaker 1: You can be interviewed in a segment one of our
- 3:08Speaker 1: producers reach out to you, or you can submit a
- 3:10Speaker 1: story online. You know, we've got a young man, Corey
- 3:14Speaker 1: who'll reach out to you. If you respond, he's going
- 3:16Speaker 1: to reach out to you. Try to set up a
- 3:18Speaker 1: time to just quickly talk to you, help you understand
- 3:20Speaker 1: what it's about. And then he'll book you into a
- 3:23Speaker 1: time for the segment, and so that's that's what it does. Now,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you could win ten thousand dollars if you give us
- 3:30Speaker 1: the best story of the year.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Right, So you submit to that story, whether you tell
- 3:34Speaker 1: it on video, you write it and we tell it
- 3:36Speaker 1: either way, if you win ten thousand bucks, are excited
- 3:39Speaker 1: about that?
- 3:40Speaker 4: Yeah, why not give it a shot?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah for sure. All right, So let's get let's get started.
- 3:46Speaker 1: You guys ready, Yeah, all right? So now where did
- 3:53Speaker 1: this story come from?
- 3:54Speaker 4: Which one of the first one.
- 3:55Speaker 1: The ghosting candidate?
- 3:57Speaker 3: I'm not sure. I don't think. I don't think think
- 4:00Speaker 3: it was submitted to us.
- 4:02Speaker 4: I don't know. I'd have to go pull it.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Up because normally, if it's been submitted.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I'm making it okay, because this sounds like I'm going
- 4:09Speaker 1: to read the story, but it sounds like someone's trying
- 4:11Speaker 1: to be a mystery writer or it really spooks me out.
- 4:15Speaker 1: So either way, I don't know that it's about a
- 4:18Speaker 1: terrible employee, but it's about kind of a weird experience.
- 4:22Speaker 1: And so when I read it, I was like, okay,
- 4:26Speaker 1: not one hundred percent here.
- 4:27Speaker 2: But it could have also been an anonymous submitted story.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So I'll look for it while you tell it.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It doesn't really matter. But have you read it? Okay,
- 4:37Speaker 1: well you can, I have to react. Yeah, so you
- 4:40Speaker 1: react to it afterwards. So I skeluled a call with
- 4:43Speaker 1: a candidate for a software engineer role whose name was Cy.
- 4:49Speaker 1: There was no photo on LinkedIn, so I was unsure
- 4:53Speaker 1: of gender or anything else. So ill I called at
- 4:56Speaker 1: the time scheduled, and a woman answered, okay, that makes sense.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The conversation started with her screaming that a ghost was
- 5:05Speaker 1: in the house and the house was haunted.
- 5:07Speaker 3: In her house.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, so called someone for an interview. Someone answers, the're
- 5:14Speaker 1: screaming about a ghost. She was very scared and even
- 5:17Speaker 1: wanted me to give her advice on what to do,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and she didn't want me to hang up the phone
- 5:22Speaker 1: as she was afraid to be alone. I don't think
- 5:26Speaker 1: they even know this. No, this is the candidate. Who
- 5:29Speaker 1: this is. She told me that she didn't want to
- 5:31Speaker 1: go outside because the ghost was going to hunt for her,
- 5:35Speaker 1: as happens in American horror stories.
- 5:38Speaker 4: She says, it sounds like the show we watched what Supernatural?
- 5:41Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that does sound very so is this.
- 5:44Speaker 1: A spoof off for show. After several minutes of listening
- 5:48Speaker 1: to her scream and trying to calm her, I finally
- 5:51Speaker 1: ended up thinking I would just add this to my
- 5:53Speaker 1: rolodex of like creepy recruiting stories, which is kind of
- 5:56Speaker 1: funny in and of itself. I know recruiters have probably
- 5:59Speaker 1: stay of these weird recruiting stories. On the following day,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I received an email from the same candidate saying that
- 6:07Speaker 1: they didn't receive any call at the scheduled time. I
- 6:11Speaker 1: told them that I did call, and a woman answered
- 6:13Speaker 1: and even checked with them that the phone number was correct,
- 6:16Speaker 1: and it was We scheduled again, and when I called,
- 6:18Speaker 1: a man answered that was the real candidate and said
- 6:22Speaker 1: that the phone never rang the previous day. We had
- 6:24Speaker 1: our conversation normally and moved him forward in the process,
- 6:27Speaker 1: although he was finally not selected. But to this moment,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I never found out who I talked to that day.
- 6:34Speaker 4: That's really creepy.
- 6:34Speaker 3: And he said that there wasn't like anybody else.
- 6:37Speaker 1: In the house with the phone. That's crazy, that's really right.
- 6:41Speaker 1: What she called the wrong er. Maybe someone just like.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe said but still like to call the wrong number.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And that's who answers And that's what she said, is like, yeah, DoD,
- 6:50Speaker 3: that's still really really I.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Got you know the number of times when you're just
- 6:55Speaker 1: doing these kind of random interviews and like, uh, you're
- 7:00Speaker 1: just calling a complete stranger. It is an absolute crap
- 7:03Speaker 1: shoot on who's going to be the other rant? Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you're look at that resumes or they're writing beautiful things
- 7:08Speaker 1: about themselves. You get him up the phone, they're like,
- 7:11Speaker 1: you know, who is this person? Have you ever seen
- 7:15Speaker 1: some of those clips of on TikTok or something where
- 7:18Speaker 1: the guys he like does these like he'll get on
- 7:22Speaker 1: an interview, Oh yes, and he just messes with recruiters
- 7:25Speaker 1: and I feel so bad for them that he waste
- 7:27Speaker 1: their time. Yeah. I always say if it happened to me,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I would hope that I would like, like, just be
- 7:33Speaker 1: a good sport about it, just like play along. You know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: you've got all if you got a busy day in
- 7:38Speaker 1: your foot, you know, and you're driving hard and and
- 7:41Speaker 1: you waste some time. But he like he'll be at
- 7:43Speaker 1: a drive through eating and she was like, you're gonna
- 7:46Speaker 1: drive through? No, I'm not.
- 7:50Speaker 3: He just wait, does he schedule these interviews?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah? He schedules these interviews. Then he puts himself in
- 7:56Speaker 1: some odd place and then swears he's not there. He's like,
- 8:00Speaker 1: she's like you're eating. He's like, I'm not, you know, right,
- 8:06Speaker 1: And I got it credit many of them. What gets
- 8:10Speaker 1: me is for how here's what tells you the life
- 8:12Speaker 1: of a recruiter is very challenging and they see a
- 8:15Speaker 1: lot of stuff. When you watch the front of that
- 8:18Speaker 1: right the first thirty seconds, him acting a fool, Yeah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: they stay professional in most cases, they stay professional and
- 8:24Speaker 1: just try to keep it moving. And you're like, it's
- 8:27Speaker 1: clearly a troll. But yeah, the recruiters staying locked in.
- 8:31Speaker 1: And it's only after like it's gone to the extreme
- 8:35Speaker 1: that the recruiters.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Like, okay, you're like a right.
- 8:40Speaker 1: They must see to stay locked in that long. Like
- 8:43Speaker 1: you watch it, TikTok, you're like total troll right off
- 8:46Speaker 1: the back. You're lacking within the first ten seconds and
- 8:48Speaker 1: they're staying locked in.
- 8:49Speaker 3: I wouldn't be able to keep a straight thing. Yeah,
- 8:53Speaker 3: there's no way.
- 8:53Speaker 4: No, I don't know.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Anyway, Kudos to kudos to whatever I see you. That
- 9:03Speaker 1: just shows me how much say they probably put up
- 9:05Speaker 1: before we dive back into the chaos on the bad hire.

- 9:44Speaker 1: That's bc h ex dot io. The magician by this
- 9:51Speaker 1: story was what we called it the magician on splent Okay,
- 9:56Speaker 1: this is got to be a submitted story because someone's
- 9:58Speaker 1: trying to be a.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I don't think this is I don't where did it
- 10:01Speaker 4: come from. I think that it was a Reddit one.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It was okay, so well, someone.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Something that from last time that we didn't get to film.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Okay, so someone wrote this, and you know, sometimes they
- 10:11Speaker 1: try to be creative with they're writing. Either way, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: love them. Also, we'll try it anyway. Once U part
- 10:20Speaker 1: of Full Moon, we had a we had to reject
- 10:23Speaker 1: a candidate After an on site interview. The process went
- 10:26Speaker 1: forward with a little fanfare or drama, but the real
- 10:30Speaker 1: twist was later revealed the candidate was moonlighting as a magician.
- 10:36Speaker 1: It's ok It's worth noting that this was not the
- 10:39Speaker 1: reason for the rejection. Okay, you're a magician. Oh, I'm sorry,
- 10:43Speaker 1: we don't take magicians. Yeah, what is it? What does
- 10:46Speaker 1: he say?
- 10:47Speaker 3: That a position he was applying for.
- 10:49Speaker 1: What does it say?
- 10:49Speaker 6: What?
- 10:51Speaker 1: It doesn't? It doesn't. It was worth noting that that's
- 10:56Speaker 1: not the reason we didn't. Okay, you know, but who
- 11:00Speaker 1: doesn't love a little magic from time to time. A
- 11:02Speaker 1: little while later, a new candidate appeared, and our recruiting
- 11:05Speaker 1: by blunt. This candidate had some striking similarities to the
- 11:11Speaker 1: old magician friend. Tiptoeing forward cautiously, we asked if there
- 11:15Speaker 1: was any relation to or if a new magician candidate.
- 11:20Speaker 1: What came next made our jaws hit the floor and
- 11:22Speaker 1: solidified his place in our collection of weird recruiting stories.
- 11:27Speaker 1: The candidate proceeded to tell us that the magician candidate
- 11:30Speaker 1: was none other than his identical twin brother. Obviously, we're
- 11:36Speaker 1: hesitant to believe this. I mean, you know, what are
- 11:39Speaker 1: the odds of having identical twin brothers following the same
- 11:42Speaker 1: career path and applying for the same position. To back
- 11:45Speaker 1: up his claim, the candidate and whipped out his phone
- 11:48Speaker 1: to show us doctored photos and fake social media profiles.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's we set up there the day before. Our recruiters
- 11:55Speaker 1: were too sharp to be fooled. The magician then showed
- 11:57Speaker 1: us his real disparian trick ghost in this after that encounter.
- 12:01Speaker 2: This reminds me of impractical jokers when they try and
- 12:04Speaker 2: have as many disguised as they can to check in
- 12:06Speaker 2: for see how long it will take them to realize
- 12:09Speaker 2: it's a person.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Like Yes, it's like they're like checking in for like somewhere,
- 12:15Speaker 3: and they have like the check in person at the desk,
- 12:17Speaker 3: and they walk in wearing a certain disguise and they
- 12:21Speaker 3: have and then they come around and walk back through
- 12:22Speaker 3: again in a different disguise and see if the check
- 12:25Speaker 3: in person notices isn't exactly It's never.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Happened to me, but it surely happened, Like like, surely
- 12:31Speaker 1: this happens where people just kind of reinvent themselves to
- 12:34Speaker 1: try to reapply. Yeah, I mean, book didn't do good
- 12:37Speaker 1: in an interview, but I learned I'll just try again for sure.
- 12:41Speaker 1: It was crazy, all right, Morgan, I think you're up.
- 12:45Speaker 4: Yeah, all right.
- 12:46Speaker 2: My first story is titled The Felon with a Heart,
- 12:49Speaker 2: so it's not a horror story but a heartbreak story.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I was at a job fair years ago, hiring for
- 12:54Speaker 2: logistics employees when this young man comes up to me
- 12:57Speaker 2: and asks me if we hire felons. I told him
- 12:59Speaker 2: that it did, hinted on whether the felon would be
- 13:01Speaker 2: considered work related or not. For the felony, for example,
- 13:05Speaker 2: felony duy would not hander him for working for us
- 13:08Speaker 2: since he was not a truck driver. He proceeded to
- 13:11Speaker 2: tell me that he just finished a five year centage
- 13:13Speaker 2: for distribution of drugs and his girlfriend was pregnant when
- 13:16Speaker 2: he went in, he got out and only wants to
- 13:18Speaker 2: focus on taking care of his daughter. It was him
- 13:22Speaker 2: main Oh, it was his main focus in life, and
- 13:24Speaker 2: that broke my heart. We couldn't hire him, but I
- 13:26Speaker 2: sure wish we had made that exception. That was a
- 13:29Speaker 2: submitted story, right.
- 13:31Speaker 3: That one was?
- 13:31Speaker 4: I don't think that one was really okay.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that does someone posted that, Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 13:37Speaker 1: but they this has actually got a cool story, I mean,
- 13:41Speaker 1: have a cool vibe in here to this. Yeah, and
- 13:44Speaker 1: that it's been five it's been five years. Tell me
- 13:48Speaker 1: he just finished a five year cent. So he's just
- 13:50Speaker 1: out and for distribution of drugs and so and she's
- 13:57Speaker 1: you know, wanting to see if she can help. But
- 14:00Speaker 1: and what's interesting in here is it does outline how
- 14:04Speaker 1: some companies think, right and how they're supposed to think.
- 14:07Speaker 1: And that is is is is it job related? You know?
- 14:11Speaker 1: Some some would say that, you know, many are job related.
- 14:15Speaker 1: There's lots of reasons how it could be job related.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But is it job related? In it? In it? You know,
- 14:20Speaker 1: since they're not driving, you know, they could have a dui.
- 14:26Speaker 1: But when you go distribution and drugs, typically an organization
- 14:33Speaker 1: or company is going to want some more time to
- 14:34Speaker 1: burn off right before they see them. You hope they
- 14:41Speaker 1: would do like an individualized assessment or personal you know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and instead of just rejecting them totally, would give them
- 14:47Speaker 1: a chance to tell their story. You know, who knows
- 14:50Speaker 1: when he was in prison, he could have gone back
- 14:52Speaker 1: to school, he could have gotten his ged, could have
- 14:54Speaker 1: all types of classes, you know, and really worked hard
- 14:58Speaker 1: during his five years to Yeah, you could take into account,
- 15:03Speaker 1: but I don't know.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't even consider that a lad higher. I
- 15:07Speaker 2: feel like it's like in the process higher kind of thing.
- 15:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so hopefully he'll be a super great higher.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah in the future, Yeah for sure.
- 15:16Speaker 1: All right.
- 15:17Speaker 4: My next one is titled It's All Up in Flames. Now.
- 15:20Speaker 2: We were in final rounds with a woman for an
- 15:21Speaker 2: in house designer role. She was a very promising candidate.
- 15:24Speaker 2: We get back the offer on the table and she says,
- 15:28Speaker 2: the final step is just a background check. There's dead
- 15:31Speaker 2: silence on the phone, and finally the woman says, well,
- 15:33Speaker 2: I have to go ahead and admit that I won't
- 15:35Speaker 2: pass the criminal background check. We ask her why, and
- 15:37Speaker 2: she says, because I caught my man cheating, so I
- 15:39Speaker 2: burned his house down.
- 15:44Speaker 4: At least she's honest.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Good for her.
- 15:47Speaker 4: But yeah, then, so I feel like you could take
- 15:52Speaker 4: that multiple ways. I mean, I don't know if you
- 15:54Speaker 4: got the job or not.
- 15:56Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I mean, you imagine the Oh my gosh, I mean,
- 16:01Speaker 2: what do you say straight up back, like, oh, okay, okay,
- 16:04Speaker 2: I'm glad she told the truth, though.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, at least she's.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Her designer role too, So she had a creative like following.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Because if she didn't say anything and the background check
- 16:15Speaker 3: comes back and the like, So, why do you have
- 16:17Speaker 3: like an artist in church.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Hoping it slips.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Through literally maybe attended murdered.
- 16:24Speaker 1: No, she did the right thing. She did the right thing. Yeah,
- 16:28Speaker 1: she talked about it up front, said what it was,
- 16:30Speaker 1: and gave them an opportunity to ask some questions.
- 16:33Speaker 3: I thought you were saying she did the right thing.
- 16:37Speaker 4: We cannot promote Arson.
- 16:39Speaker 3: On the channel.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Emma was like, go girl, good for her. No, oh
- 16:47Speaker 1: my gosh, all right, Emma, what do you got me?
- 16:52Speaker 3: Okay, I've got to today. Both of the Yes, both
- 16:57Speaker 3: of my stories were submitted for other contests, but they
- 17:00Speaker 3: wanted to stay anonymous, So I gotcha. I'm not gonna
- 17:02Speaker 3: say like who submitted it or anything. This first one
- 17:05Speaker 3: sounded sounds like really ominous, like there's it's not super specific, gotcha,
- 17:12Speaker 3: but I'm I'm gonna read it anymore. I still remember
- 17:16Speaker 3: how confident I felt the day we made the offer.
- 17:18Speaker 3: On paper. This hire was perfect, impressive resume, strong interview answers,
- 17:23Speaker 3: glowing references. They spoke our language, understood our mission and
- 17:27Speaker 3: assured us they'd hit the ground running. After months of searching,
- 17:31Speaker 3: it felt like a win. Spoiler alert, it was not
- 17:34Speaker 3: a win. Within the first few weeks, small.
- 17:39Speaker 1: Famous like last words in a good hire writer about
- 17:41Speaker 1: are after months of searching, Yeah, I felt like a win.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Yeah when we hired this person. Yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Within the first few weeks, small red flags began to surface.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Deadlines are missed, communication was vague, Tasks that should have
- 17:54Speaker 3: taken hours dragged into days. At first I blamed onboarding,
- 17:58Speaker 3: then the workload, then myself. I doubled down on support,
- 18:02Speaker 3: offered clear instructions, adjusted timelines, anything to make it work.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Instead of improving, things quietly unraveled. Projects stalled because others
- 18:10Speaker 3: had to redo their work. Team morale dipped as frustration grew.
- 18:14Speaker 3: Meetings became tense, with more energy spent managing problems than
- 18:17Speaker 3: building solutions. What hurt most wasn't just the lost productivity,
- 18:21Speaker 3: It was the slow erosion of trust within the team.
- 18:24Speaker 3: The biggest lesson came when I realized the issue wasn't skill,
- 18:26Speaker 3: it was alignment. This person didn't take ownership. Feedback was
- 18:30Speaker 3: met with defensive defensiveness instead of curiosity. Accountability was always redirected,
- 18:35Speaker 3: never absorbed. What we thought was confidence turned out to
- 18:38Speaker 3: be over confidence, and what we assumed was experience masked
- 18:41Speaker 3: as unwillingness to adapt. By the time we made the
- 18:44Speaker 3: difficult decision to part ways, the cost was far greater
- 18:47Speaker 3: than their salary. We had lost time, momentum, and the
- 18:50Speaker 3: sense of psychological safety within the team. Rebuilding took months.
- 18:55Speaker 3: That bad hire changed how I lead forever.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Now.
- 18:58Speaker 3: I listened more closely to how can, and it's talk
- 19:00Speaker 3: about failure, not to success. I prioritize values and accountability
- 19:04Speaker 3: over polish, and I trust early signals and stuff explaining
- 19:09Speaker 3: them away. It was an expensive lesson, but one that
- 19:14Speaker 3: reshaped our hiring process for the better.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Wow.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I thought it was worded very well. Yeah, I just
- 19:21Speaker 3: also I just felt like it wasn't super specific on
- 19:24Speaker 3: like and.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I think it was probably because she was trying to
- 19:27Speaker 2: maintain that yeah anonymous.
- 19:30Speaker 3: And I guess I guess also she was trying to
- 19:31Speaker 3: be relatable because I'm sure that there's been.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Y Yeah, so this you know who wrote this is
- 19:40Speaker 1: not just telling a story, but like trying to help
- 19:46Speaker 1: you understand, like how you could be better because she's
- 19:48Speaker 1: waking out, like listen, here's here's here's what I can.
- 19:53Speaker 1: You know she got early warning signs.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Yeah, because that's kind of the point of the show anyways,
- 19:58Speaker 3: to learn from the uh, you know, to learn from
- 20:02Speaker 3: to learn from the stories that we tell.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Someone burning down their house.
- 20:06Speaker 2: But like to keep her like anonymous still the industry
- 20:10Speaker 2: that she works in, because we do know who the
- 20:12Speaker 2: individual is.
- 20:13Speaker 4: She just doesn't want everybody else to know. It's a
- 20:15Speaker 4: super important industry. Safety is super important.
- 20:17Speaker 2: And I think like whatever happened must have been a
- 20:20Speaker 2: big enough deal for her to write.
- 20:22Speaker 1: When you've got somebody failing and then not taking accountability
- 20:25Speaker 1: and then resisting back and getting defensive. You know, she's
- 20:29Speaker 1: right to point out, it just starts, it just starts
- 20:31Speaker 1: deteriorating the entire team. And you know, I remember talking about,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, skills versus behaviors, traits and behaviors, and this
- 20:42Speaker 1: is the traits and behaviors miss higher. And you know,
- 20:45Speaker 1: skills can Skills don't necessarily lead the way, or I
- 20:51Speaker 1: don't think they lead the way when you hire someone,
- 20:53Speaker 1: because this is certainly someone who probably was higher on
- 20:56Speaker 1: the skills list.
- 20:58Speaker 3: And well I understand how they probably wanted to like,
- 21:00Speaker 3: also respect the privacy of the person that they were
- 21:03Speaker 3: talking about. Probably the the way that the story was
- 21:05Speaker 3: worded sided super professional.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it's tell written by some many very professional Yeah.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah, and some good learning there. Really.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I loved how she or he I don't actually know
- 21:16Speaker 1: said they overlooked early warning sons in the interview process.
- 21:24Speaker 1: So cool. What's next?
- 21:26Speaker 3: The next one is called the Ghost of Insurance Past.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Oh wait, another ghost story for our contest. Okay, what
- 21:33Speaker 1: they wanted to stay it on this? Okay, crossing my
- 21:35Speaker 1: fingers for them.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Okay. I was hiring a benefits manager in Q four
- 21:39Speaker 3: twenty twenty five. I considered myself lucky to find a
- 21:42Speaker 3: great candidate with almost thirty years of experience. She joined
- 21:45Speaker 3: on a Thursday, did orientation, and then came back Friday
- 21:49Speaker 3: for training. That Sunday night, she called and told me
- 21:51Speaker 3: that her brother had passed away and she needed to
- 21:53Speaker 3: go to New York for a week. I worked for
- 21:55Speaker 3: a generous company with a great culture, so we went
- 21:58Speaker 3: ahead and paid her three days of berevement wow holiday
- 22:00Speaker 3: because it was Thanksgiving week, and a vacation day because
- 22:03Speaker 3: she had earned a half day. I checked on her
- 22:05Speaker 3: well being frequently while she was away. The following Monday,
- 22:08Speaker 3: she asked to work remote because her flight had arrived late.
- 22:11Speaker 3: I agreed and told her to do online training. She
- 22:14Speaker 3: showed up Tuesday. On Wednesday, she came in, picked up
- 22:17Speaker 3: her check and said she'd be right back, and she
- 22:19Speaker 3: never returned. Oh, wouldn't answer our calls or texts, and
- 22:22Speaker 3: had us very worried. We called her emergency contact. They
- 22:25Speaker 3: did like a police well wellbeing check on her or whatever,
- 22:29Speaker 3: and still didn't hear anything back. When her next check
- 22:32Speaker 3: was due, it was a paper check, and she called
- 22:34Speaker 3: us to and then she called us raging that her
- 22:36Speaker 3: check hadn't been direct deposited.
- 22:38Speaker 4: She called the.
- 22:39Speaker 3: Department of Labor, cussed us all out, called incessantly, et cetera.
- 22:44Speaker 3: We paid her based on her word, but now know
- 22:47Speaker 3: that her brother did not die, and she was lying
- 22:50Speaker 3: from day one. Oh gosh, it's like that one guy
- 22:53Speaker 3: that live and said that his mom died. Oh yeah,
- 22:56Speaker 3: and then his mom like called he was like hey see, okay, yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Or there was also one where she was like, oh,
- 23:02Speaker 3: my husband, my husband died in the rick. Yeah, and
- 23:05Speaker 3: then her husband, yeah, her husband called the office and
- 23:08Speaker 3: asked for her.
- 23:09Speaker 4: This is crazy.
- 23:11Speaker 1: It's uh yeah, deaths. Deaths in the family happened a
- 23:15Speaker 1: lot around the holidays, and to extend out the holidays.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Really, it's crazy. I just think it's an insane thing
- 23:21Speaker 3: to lie about the family members.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Do you have a company though? Look at they paid bereavement. Yeah,
- 23:27Speaker 1: they give her a half a day PTO right off
- 23:29Speaker 1: the bat.
- 23:30Speaker 4: What happens if your papa actually dies?
- 23:32Speaker 1: Though?
- 23:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, it's really what do.
- 23:34Speaker 1: You do then you have? Well I haven't, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 1: I don't know. It's it's it's crazy when people do that,
- 23:42Speaker 1: and they do it to get time off. But it's crazy.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I don't know. But what I what I liked about
- 23:49Speaker 1: that story was how good the you know, the company was. Yeah,
- 23:55Speaker 1: it was like they're sending all these signals that they're
- 23:58Speaker 1: a really good company. First their first thing was the show.
- 24:03Speaker 1: That thing isn't to think bad. It's like be worried
- 24:05Speaker 1: about her, like they must do like, yeah, this isn't
- 24:10Speaker 1: their person. You know, they didn't think negative. They thought,
- 24:13Speaker 1: oh no, something must be wrong, sent called the police
- 24:16Speaker 1: into a wefair jack.
- 24:17Speaker 4: I mean she was a benefits manager too, so yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 1: So they were then they give her the time. Yeah,
- 24:24Speaker 1: you know, wow, and then well she she turned around
- 24:29Speaker 1: on them, and I'm sure that was a complete another
- 24:31Speaker 1: shock because it sounds like a great culture. Yeah, so
- 24:37Speaker 1: is that it?
- 24:38Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 24:39Speaker 1: Those were good. How we look on our on our
- 24:41Speaker 1: submitted stories got a lot.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I think next time we film, they're.
- 24:46Speaker 1: All going to be submissions, is that right. It's kind
- 24:48Speaker 1: of fun. It's been fun to watch this kind of Yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I mean we're like nineteen times into this. Yeah, it's
- 24:54Speaker 1: been a little bit of a labor of love just
- 24:56Speaker 1: to keep going when no one's paying attention. Yeah. And
- 24:59Speaker 1: then but then people start paying attention, you know, and
- 25:02Speaker 1: you start seeing you know, submitted stories. People reached out saying, hey,
- 25:07Speaker 1: I'd like to tell a story beyond the show. You know,
- 25:10Speaker 1: all that stacking up, you know, it would be Hopefully
- 25:14Speaker 1: we'll soon be in a place where we can play
- 25:17Speaker 1: clips of people telling their stories.
- 25:19Speaker 4: We have lights in the queue right now.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Yeah. And then also and still read a few people
- 25:25Speaker 1: who don't just want to submit stories.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good fun because you know, we were you
- 25:30Speaker 1: guys were doing a lot of internet research trying to
- 25:32Speaker 1: find stories, and there's you know, everyone's got a story.
- 25:37Speaker 1: I can't tell you the number of times people have
- 25:39Speaker 1: said to me. I was talking to CEO the other
- 25:41Speaker 1: day of another background screening company and he goes, yeah,
- 25:46Speaker 1: everybody's got a story. I was like, oh, yeah, you're right.
- 25:49Speaker 1: You know, everybody's been hiring he's got a story, and
- 25:51Speaker 1: that we and he loved the idea of what we
- 25:53Speaker 1: were doing, and he goes, I've gotten one I want,
- 25:57Speaker 1: you know, And so I think he's gonna do a segment.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't matter what industry you're into. Everybody has
- 26:03Speaker 2: some sort of story. Like, yeah, it's all across the
- 26:06Speaker 2: board where you've been about higher So yeah.
- 26:08Speaker 1: So I've loved I love the traction we're getting and
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know, the views we're getting not necessarily on the
- 26:17Speaker 1: podcast itself. Yeah it's not like a podcast you call
- 26:20Speaker 1: and listen to for like, you know, two three hours
- 26:23Speaker 1: a day, like the news source, but we're using that
- 26:26Speaker 1: to turn all these stories into clips, and you know,
- 26:30Speaker 1: they're really getting a lot of traction online. So I
- 26:32Speaker 1: love the idea of people enjoying the clips of the show.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You know, it's kind of fun. Yeah all right, So,
- 26:38Speaker 1: uh that's it for today. So thanks for listening to
