Transcript
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Delving Deeper with Oleander Hawthorne, joined by Delphine Landra.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Delving Deeper is our metagame series where we talk about our characters, our sessions, anything that happens within them, or generally just ask each other, what the hell were you thinking?
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: So today we are discussing character death.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: We are in my backyard currently accidentally locked out of my house.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Einar locked us out of the house.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: By accident.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: He didn't know I don't have a key.
- 1:08SPEAKER_01: And then he left town.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: He left town.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I hope so.
- 1:11unknown: Yeah.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Uh, anyways, uh, as far as character death in your games, it's pretty much inevitable at some point that a character is going to die, whether it's your character or one of your party's characters.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: Um I my personal feelings are that if the stakes are if if character death is not an option, the stakes are not real.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: They're not there.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Um there's no reason for players to be careful or not, you know, basically self-destruct themselves at every opportunity.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, not leave Roy Jenkins into everything.
- 1:50SPEAKER_01: Not leave Roy Jenkins into everything, and to be concerned about each other and not getting each other killed.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Because that is a huge part of combat and healing is taking serious the possibility that this player or this character might not make it.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: If you're not careful, if you're not healing them, if you're not looking out for them, or being any kind of attentive or caring, they might they might be gone.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: And most of us, I don't know about you guys, but we definitely take our characters very seriously.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: Well, maybe a little too seriously, but obsessively.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: A little obsessively seriously.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: We're not probably the only players either, to me.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I would do that.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I do believe that uh sorry, we just triggered a song in my head.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I believe in a thing called love.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I was saying you're quite.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: We were talking to someone today who actually they don't build a character sheet, they build a character book.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: That is commanding.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: I really enjoy that, right?
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: They're like the novel of the character, their life, their backstories, their preferences.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: You're coming from When Words Collide, which is a writer's convention here, and uh that's where we were talking about.
- 3:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: A lot of DD, actually.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Lots of DD at the Calvary When Words Collide.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: So um everybody, every campaign is going to have a different ritual, how they go about revivification or other um whatever spells they use for make not dead.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: To make not dead.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Boyfriends back and gather trouble.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Can I sing that if I ever raise Einar?
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: I think you have to.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: I have to now.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: You have to.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: So remember that.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Make note.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: I please, please, if I forget at some point to sing that song after raising Einar, do shame me.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: Missed opportunity.
- 3:44unknown: Yeah.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: So our uh RDM and all of us, so many of D uh of the DD players around now are very inspired by Critical Role.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Big Shock, right?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: So I'm surprised.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Oh surprise.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Now I don't I don't recall exactly if we use the same ritual as them or if it's just heavily inspired by.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not I'm not, I don't remember the specifics of how they do it, like specifically, but yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: So what someone can tell us.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Uh what RDM does is they have a certain um level of difficulty that we have to match.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And three people have to contribute to the ritual, not even the caster.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: The casters.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the caster is not allowed to be one of the people contributing to it.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: They're the ones just performing the ritual.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Three other people have to make a sacrifice of some sort um or you know, uh some some sort of contribution that draws the spirit further towards uh being resurrected, you know, aside from the fact that they have to be willing, uh willing spirit.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, but yeah, three people have to contribute, and then the DM rolls for us.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: Um whatever contribution the players make either makes it uh more difficult or less difficult.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: If you do something really good, then it gets easier and easier.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: If you make a bigger sacrifice or like a bigger plea, because it's not always like a thing that they have to give.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: We could just make a really good shaming argument.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: I shamed someone back to life.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: So wow.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Mufflers are us.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: People have have to really impress others with their vehicles.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: So if you if you do if you don't make any kind of statement or, you know, no real sacrifice or plea during your portion of the ritual, it'll actually make it more difficult.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So then the DM afterwards will roll and he will tell us if we are successful or not.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: We do not know how anything is going.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: We do not know how he is judging unless we just know that that was a crappy participation.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Like, you don't even get a participation trophy.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: In fact, you owe us a participation trophy.
- 6:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So uh, like I said, I cannot recall if that's the exact way that Critical Role does it or if it's just heavily inspired by.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: Now, and I but in that same vein, like it could be we've done some pretty weird ones because like you shamed someone.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: I shamed also very and and I got like, I really added to it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Like shame.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: I I I They said that I told no, the DM said that I like he the equivalent of he wanted to give me inspiration for how thoroughly Yeah, but he was supposed to give me inspiration.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: It not yeah, usually just for saying he's handsome though.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: Um not for shaming someone back to life.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: That was really it was really good.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: It was really good.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: But actually my favorite is um now Delphine will give him a hard time for it.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: But when Drax sacrificed his the only gift he's ever been given, which was a nice shirt that Delphine bought, everyone, because she decided you guys were too shabbily dressed, and you needed to look nice to go to the mage shower at the very beginning, like like this either first or second session.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I bought everyone like a nice shirt or a nice shawl or something because they needed nice clothes and they did not have nice clothes by her standards.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: And uh Drax sacrificed his nice silk shirt she bought him in our Drukens, I think.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: I thought that that yeah, no, yeah.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was when when Drucan had passed.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just you know, so think out of the box.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, could be anything.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Shame is a very fun addition.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: Just just shame is in case anybody wants to.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Nice clothes.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: Or nice clothes.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Or nice clothes.
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: Or killing other things.
- 7:34SPEAKER_01: Not the standard, but I did sacrifice um a certain thing.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: That was if you were casting a spell.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: I was cast, yeah, yeah.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we're gonna get stormed out here or not.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: We might get stormed out, we might get really wet.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: So um another thing that we did want to discuss, and a lot of people have feelings on, is uh we feel the killing of an absent player.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: Because we parameters.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: There are parameters.
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, we know a fellow DM that has just uh put out recently a video about never kill an absent player unless.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Unless.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: And I I fully agree with go buff yourself, DM.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: I fully agree with them, actually, because in in the scenario, it's generally unfair to have bad things happen to players who aren't there.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Um They're not there to participate, they're not there to give any choices.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Give any choices as to what their character may or may not do.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: However, if there has been a discussion beforehand and the player has given permission for other players to control them, knowing they're in a situation where they, if they are allowing their player to be controlled, their player can participate in a fight, they may get hurt.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, or worse.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Or worse.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: If that player consents to all of these willingly, then yeah, they might die.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: Now, I actually have been like 20 years ago, um, or more.
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: I I was part of a game where I was an absent player and my character did die because the DM at that point was like, I don't care, I'm using your character, they're here, they're doing whatever.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: Oh, they die.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so that is that's one of those things where like, and conversely though, the the player can't just give himself plot armor by being like, I'm not here, you can play my character in the fight, but don't let me die.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: No.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: If you're gonna participate in if you're letting people participate, you get all the consequences of that participation.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: You don't get plot armor just because you're done.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Which is why a lot of the time for our party, it's potty humor, but um, if you're not able to play, you're poop, it's because you got like some really terrible um tummy problems.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And that's what your character is doing for however many sessions it is, you're not able to be here.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: If you're gone for weeks, you're pooping for weeks.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: You are not there.
- 10:04unknown: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: Now, we do have a theory about our uh what our DM has done.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: I don't know We haven't confirmed any of this.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: It's just observation.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: And this So don't don't come at us, DM.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: You're not this is not allowed to be held as canon.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: But this is a theory we have.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: You love it when we make theories, especially when we're wrong.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: It could have been drunken talk at some point when he lets things slip, or it could two years ago maybe he would have mentioned something.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it could be an old conversation, but I have it in my head that everyone gets one.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: Because I believe he has said he will not let because we put so much into our characters, we've played them for so long, we're very attached.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna perma kill us without, like, essentially our permission.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So, which which is the thing, but also there has to be stakes.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: So there's a big cost.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Character death has to be an option for sure.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: And if he's going to let us come back, uh, there is going to be outside the bounds of the spells.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, outside of the bounds of revivification or other not dead yourself, um, or others.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Uh if it would there has there has to be a significant cost.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: And I'm so I'm quite certain that he did say everybody gets one, but I could be making that up.
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: We could be making that up, but that is a theory.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: We have we have one get out of jail free card.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Which we yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: Not quite free, just get out of jail.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, get out of jail, very not free.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Pay the fine.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, pay the fine.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Do not collect$200 as you pass go.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, do not pass go, do not collect$200.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Now that has happened twice.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Twice.
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: Now so in our party, we have had four of the six party members have gone down to the point of needing to be revived in some manner.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: The only two who I'm knocking up with have not yet had that is Einar and Delphine.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Everyone else has either in recording or out of recording, gone down.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: Gone down, down, down, capital D down.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: And two of us could not be revivified.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: For one reason or another.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: So the first was Drukin, and that was an example of we did not make the difficulty role for the revivify spell.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And we did an epic ritual.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: We just the roles were not in our favor.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: They were not in our favor because it was a great, great ritual.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we all gave up a lot.
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Delphine gave up her identity.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: That's when everyone found out she was a tiefling, was in that ritual.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: That was her secret.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: That's all she had to offer.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: And and then me.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: I paid a far greater cost than anybody else has had to pay.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Because that's that's far.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: That's far.
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: Our DM probably has some bad shit up his sleeves.
- 13:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, he's for you, in my, I'm sure.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm sure it's me.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: So I'm positive it's you.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: She's gotta be, it's gotta be worse for her than it was for me, right?
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: I don't I just what did I do?
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: A Schadenfreud or whatever.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Like I just want somebody else to have it worse.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: I understand.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I understand.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: I don't fault you for that.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: And so what happened with Oleander when when I died, I would I died by disintegration rate.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: There was nothing left.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: There was absolutely no option.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: We couldn't revivify.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: We did not have the higher resurrection type spells because our cleric is.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: None of us, like even if he wasn't, he wouldn't, like, none of us are high enough that we wouldn't have to be.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Wouldn't you have, anyways?
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying we wouldn't need to do that.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: You'd just leave me there in the cavern.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: No, I wouldn't even let Drunken poof you away like a dick.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: He was a dick.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: He was in his feelings.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: We were we were deep in our feelings.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there was a giant fight over daddy and my corpse.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Mommy and Daddy were fighting.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, very much.
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: So they had a fight over my corpse at my dust, and I was nearly blown away.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: Uh literally by Drucan having a hissy fit.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: It's a real bad time, yo.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: So the cost is is the interesting part that happens here now because uh in we go to this scene.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Now, of course, I've I've gone off, I've had a hisszy fit, they've continued playing because we're in the middle of a battle.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: And then I get a message from the DM get your ass back down here.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: And it's been like I wonder what would have happened if you like left.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: That would be so funny.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Not just like upstairs in my bathroom.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Upstairs in the bathroom.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I went to get like a beer, man.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: I'm at the bar.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Not here.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Drowning with sorrows.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: I'm at the bar.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: So I get the message.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Get your butt back down here.
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: I make my way.
- 15:13unknown: Make it my way?
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, back down.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: And we go into this scene, and I am brought into uh a little lakeside dock, and at the end of the dock, there is grandad.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: Not the skull that I normally carry with me, but the alive and well looking.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Alive.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Alive.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: Uh in the in-between world.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: I was in the in-betweens, and we had a conversation.
- 15:44unknown: It's not happening.
- 15:46SPEAKER_01: The skies are rumbling.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: They don't want to participate today.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: So I I had a discussion with Grandad.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: He foresaw this coming and he wanted to basically he left this life early and held the rest of his life in stasis to be able to give to me during my time of need because he foresaw ahead of time that I was going to uh I was going to die early and that I still had more to do.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: And he had chosen um as his favorite heir uh that he would suc he would he would um I would be his successor and he would er well he didn't say that but that's just part of my canon.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: He just wanted to save you.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: He wanted to save me.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: He gave his life for me.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: I had to still choose to accept or reject, but I did have that.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: And Oleander is so afraid of dying that who is that?
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: She side for minor.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: I accepted that, and that was that brought actually some very real grief for me.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: I know that these are fake characters, I know that they're made up, but all of us put part of ourselves into our characters.
- 16:58unknown: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Uh and a lot of what I put into my character is my family my family attachment and my ancestor worship.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: And I for me it was like I I really feel like even though yes, this is a game, I feel like I can actually respect ancestors and kind of connect through my character.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: And I felt like huge, huge grief giving that up, saying that yes, I accept that you are giving the rest of your life for me.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I'm too scared to let mine go, so I'm gonna let you go.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: I lost my grandfather, I lost all connection that I had to him there.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I lost my patron.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Grandad meant everything to my character, and then suddenly she has nothing.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: Now he's just an empty skull.
- 17:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: So I was brought back fully like there's my body in the middle of the rest of them having a ginormous fight.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: And doesn't that make you feel good though?
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, it I mean it's it was chaotic and overwhelming.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean, I as a player like it.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: It was very confusing for my character.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Um, but it was it was just such an overwhelming moment, and then for that I and I didn't even see it coming somehow, somehow I didn't see it coming.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: I came back human.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Cost.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I lost all amplified cost.
- 18:34SPEAKER_01: Amplified cost because you lost your vampirism, you lost your patron, and you lost your granddad.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, bad things come in threes.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Cost.
- 18:46SPEAKER_01: Big cost.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Big cost.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, so that was.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: And that's not something that she knew any of us knew could have beforehand.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: No.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: None of us.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: None of us um expected that cost, that or even that amount of a cost to come out of this.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Uh so yeah, Oleander's got a lot of survivor's guilt going on now out of that.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: And uh some of the other players, like their character, like not even the pla just the players, but of course their characters don't understand why this is a problem.
