- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Anny and Samitta. I'm welcome to stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: I never told you productive iHeart radio, and today we
- 0:19Speaker 1: are bringing back a favorite of mine, a Spoiled Saturdays
- 0:23Speaker 1: on across the Spider Verse. People know I love it.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I just oh, my gosh. When I was on Movie
- 0:31Speaker 1: Crush back when that was a podcast Spider Verse, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: first one was my pick. That was the one I
- 0:37Speaker 1: went for. And sometimes I get nostalgic for that. Do
- 0:40Speaker 1: you ever have a topic that you talk about, and
- 0:42Speaker 1: this is one for me that I just knew so
- 0:45Speaker 1: much about that. Chuck would ask me questions and I
- 0:47Speaker 1: just knew. I was like, oh, the Kirby crack hole. Yeah,
- 0:50Speaker 1: this is what it is. I know what it is.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I love when I'm so prepared. I'm like,
- 0:56Speaker 2: you can't tell me nothing.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Let us. It's so nice. And it was really nice
- 1:00Speaker 1: because a lot of listeners were resonated with it. I
- 1:03Speaker 1: love when that happens. There's a couple of reasons this
- 1:06Speaker 1: is on my mind to bring back. Obviously the New
- 1:08Speaker 1: Spider Man movies and theaters. I haven't seen it yet,
- 1:11Speaker 1: which is wild.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I can't believe you haven't seen it.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Have you gotten spoiled though, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, I don't.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I actually don't think I've gotten fully spoiled, but I've
- 1:22Speaker 1: gotten like some key things that they were trying to
- 1:25Speaker 1: keep hidden spot.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And you better go see it soon, I know.
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'm I think I'm in a like spat with the
- 1:31Speaker 1: person I normally go with that I don't know about this,
- 1:36Speaker 1: but I think that he's like not inviting me because
- 1:39Speaker 1: he's mad at me. But that's that's something I figure
- 1:43Speaker 1: out on my own. But also this is on my
- 1:49Speaker 1: mind because I recently watched Project Tell Mary and I
- 1:55Speaker 1: did the same people Phil Lord and Christopher Miller did
- 1:59Speaker 1: that I was when I was watching it, I was like,
- 2:02Speaker 1: this has similar kind of visual cues, and I'm sure enough,
- 2:07Speaker 1: there you go. Also, this movie, we talk about it
- 2:11Speaker 1: in this episode a little bit, but these movies take
- 2:14Speaker 1: a lot to animate, and they take a lot of time.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And there's been kind of a growing conversation from people,
- 2:24Speaker 1: especially at Sony I think, who are saying like, this
- 2:27Speaker 1: is not sustainable, this is like overwork, and so that
- 2:31Speaker 1: I believe the deadline for the next movie has been
- 2:35Speaker 1: pushed back. But they just released character posters.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yes, so exciting This is the time.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Of year when you know it's Comic Con, as dagon Con,
- 2:47Speaker 1: all these things are coming out to get you excited
- 2:50Speaker 1: as a fan of stuff. So I'm excited. It's as
- 2:54Speaker 1: you should be, as you should be, so please enjoy
- 2:57Speaker 1: this classic episode. Hey, this is Anny. I'm welcome to
- 3:06Speaker 1: Steffan Never Told You production of iHeartRadio, and welcome to
- 3:20Speaker 1: another edition of Spoiled Saturdays.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Yeah, but we've only.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Done one of these. It's been a minute since we've
- 3:26Speaker 1: done two. Okay, we've definitely done something that was like
- 3:30Speaker 1: in the realm of Spoiled Saturdays. I don't know if
- 3:33Speaker 1: we'd called it that yet. Yeah. Yeah, I'm excited. I'm excited.
- 3:39Speaker 1: But yes, as the titles suggest, spoilers, massive spoilers, everything spoiled.
- 3:45Speaker 1: So if you don't want to be spoiled on the
- 3:47Speaker 1: new Spider Verse movie, go.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Away, come back, go live alone, people.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Come on, Yeah, come on. As I was doing this,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I realized we never did the first one. We kind
- 3:57Speaker 1: of talked about it in and uh we No, we
- 4:02Speaker 1: never did it. We talked about it briefly in our
- 4:05Speaker 1: superhero themed holiday feminist movies around the world, where we
- 4:09Speaker 1: did like Batman and Iron Man three Expider first.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I know, because we need to come back
- 4:18Speaker 2: to it, then we should.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I have so many thoughts on that. As I was
- 4:21Speaker 1: doing this, I had such a glorious moment of it's
- 4:26Speaker 1: so nice when you just know something so well that
- 4:29Speaker 1: I'm just writing from the heart. I don't have to.
- 4:34Speaker 3: When we were talking about doing it, I was like,
- 4:36Speaker 3: this is gonna be an easy one for you.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Just go for it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: The hard part was condensing it, to be honest, but
- 4:43Speaker 1: I tried my best.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Yes, which listeners, he does have a little little warning
- 4:48Speaker 3: side note, keep it brief us.
- 4:50Speaker 4: In July Annie to myself, I wrote it in there,
- 4:54Speaker 4: don't do it and speaking of because I wanted to
- 4:57Speaker 4: go into all these tangents about like the animation and
- 5:01Speaker 4: the technology involved.
- 5:03Speaker 1: That's not really this podcast, but I did do that
- 5:07Speaker 1: on Movie Crush when I did an episode on the
- 5:09Speaker 1: first one where I really went in. So if you
- 5:12Speaker 1: want to listen to that, I would recommend it. It's
- 5:15Speaker 1: very nerdy. I'm talking about like the Kirby dots and
- 5:17Speaker 1: the Kirby crackle and all this stuff. That's great, but
- 5:22Speaker 1: to say like new technologies have been invented to make
- 5:25Speaker 1: these movies. They have an R and D department to
- 5:28Speaker 1: make these movies, so really cool stuff. This one has
- 5:32Speaker 1: been very successful. It has very been very critically acclaimed.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It made more money and it's opening weeks than the
- 5:37Speaker 1: first one did all together, so it's doing well. And yes,
- 5:42Speaker 1: as Samantha I were discussing right before, there are two
- 5:46Speaker 1: different versions of this movie in theaters. Essentially what happened
- 5:50Speaker 1: was there was kind of a complaint about some of
- 5:52Speaker 1: the audios, so they fixed some of the audio, and
- 5:55Speaker 1: then there's about twenty very small differences in between the
- 5:59Speaker 1: two of them. So that's just if you want to
- 6:02Speaker 1: look it up, there's some guidelines of the differences, so
- 6:05Speaker 1: you can be like, oh, here we go, that's the
- 6:07Speaker 1: version I watch. Yes, so I'm gonna do a rundown
- 6:14Speaker 1: of this plot because it's kind of it's a lot,
- 6:17Speaker 1: and I feel like i'll just it'll be easier if
- 6:20Speaker 1: I just go to just go, just go, Okay. So,
- 6:24Speaker 1: Spider Man Across the Spider Verse is the twenty twenty
- 6:27Speaker 1: three sequel of the critically acclaimed twenty eighteen Spider Man
- 6:31Speaker 1: Into the Spider Verse, both written and produced by Phil
- 6:33Speaker 1: Lord and Christopher Miller. Both of these films are unique
- 6:37Speaker 1: in their animation styles. They have two D, they have
- 6:40Speaker 1: three D, they have stop motion, different frame rates, bright colors,
- 6:44Speaker 1: and just a lot of different stylistic animations like noir, anime,
- 6:49Speaker 1: punk and colors that make them very, very beautiful. It
- 6:53Speaker 1: is like watching a living comic book. So in the
- 6:57Speaker 1: first movie, which yes, I will keep this brief, Miles
- 7:00Speaker 1: uner Alis discovers a multiverse of alternate universes and their
- 7:03Speaker 1: respective Spider People and not even people always with their help,
- 7:08Speaker 1: he learns to accept his role as Spider Man after
- 7:11Speaker 1: the death of Peter Parker in his universe, along the
- 7:14Speaker 1: way learning his uncle Aaron is the Prowler who is
- 7:17Speaker 1: a villain, and he gets killed by Kingpinn while also
- 7:21Speaker 1: strengthening his relationship with his father, who is a police officer.
- 7:25Speaker 1: All of the other Spider People are returned to their
- 7:27Speaker 1: own universes. The second one picks up pretty much right
- 7:32Speaker 1: where that one ended, though it starts with Spider Woman
- 7:36Speaker 1: slash Gwynn Stacy's POV and going a bit more in
- 7:41Speaker 1: depth into her backstory of how she Spider Woman, was
- 7:45Speaker 1: blamed for the death of her best friend and only friend,
- 7:48Speaker 1: Peter Parker, something that has made her really closed off
- 7:52Speaker 1: and has driven a wedge in her relationship with her
- 7:55Speaker 1: police chief father, who is determined to catch Spider Woman
- 7:58Speaker 1: and bring her to justice, not knowing it's Gwynn and
- 8:01Speaker 1: kind of not understanding why Gwinn doesn't want him to
- 8:03Speaker 1: do it. After the events of the first film, she
- 8:08Speaker 1: missus Miles, who is the first friend she'd made after
- 8:12Speaker 1: the death of Peter. While investigating a disturbance, she sees
- 8:16Speaker 1: the sort of Italian Renaissance version of the Vulture. And
- 8:19Speaker 1: by the way, the song on the soundtrack is called
- 8:22Speaker 1: Vulture gets Culture because it happens out of museum and
- 8:25Speaker 1: I love it anyway, he's glitching, indicating that he is
- 8:30Speaker 1: from another universe. They fight, and soon Miguel O'Hara slash
- 8:35Speaker 1: Spider Man twenty ninety nine shows up from his universe
- 8:39Speaker 1: to aid her, and he was introduced as an Easter
- 8:43Speaker 1: Egg in the end credits of the first one. Actually,
- 8:47Speaker 1: he also shows up with another Spider Woman, Jess Drew,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and together they are able to subdue Vulture. Gwinn reveals
- 8:55Speaker 1: her true identity to her father and he tries to
- 8:58Speaker 1: arrest her, hurt Gwyn and accepts Miguel's very reluctant offer
- 9:02Speaker 1: to join the Spider Society and escapes into a portal
- 9:05Speaker 1: with him and Jess. So basically, he's implying he's having
- 9:09Speaker 1: to grow and clean up their mess that they created
- 9:12Speaker 1: by trying to fix this Collider multiverse problem, and he's
- 9:18Speaker 1: not happy about it, and he doesn't want her in
- 9:19Speaker 1: the society, but Jess is like, no, no, I think
- 9:22Speaker 1: we should have her in. Meanwhile, Miles is struggling to
- 9:25Speaker 1: balance his responsibilities as Spider Man with those of his
- 9:29Speaker 1: family and academic life as it comes time for college applications,
- 9:33Speaker 1: especially when his family doesn't want him to leave Brooklyn.
- 9:35Speaker 1: He also imagines telling them about his identity as Spider
- 9:39Speaker 1: Man that he holds himself back, even as his parents
- 9:42Speaker 1: suspect he is lying to them, and he misses Gwyn too.
- 9:46Speaker 1: He also does not have much in the way of friends,
- 9:49Speaker 1: so he keeps mentioning these friends like Quinn, and his
- 9:51Speaker 1: parents are like, why haven't we never met Quinn and
- 9:52Speaker 1: he's like, oh, well. He encounters what he calls a
- 9:59Speaker 1: bad guy the week called the Spot. I'm just going
- 10:02Speaker 1: to call him Spot throughout this, but it's the Spot
- 10:05Speaker 1: who after the accident with all the alternate universes at
- 10:09Speaker 1: the company he worked for, alchem X from the first one.
- 10:12Speaker 1: He has these interdimensional spots and portals on his body.
- 10:16Speaker 1: He blames Miles for what happened to him and reveals
- 10:18Speaker 1: that he transported the spider that bit Miles from another
- 10:22Speaker 1: dimension Earth forty two. Spot learns how to travel through
- 10:26Speaker 1: universes using his spots and decides to increase his power
- 10:30Speaker 1: to become more than a bad guy of the Week.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Gwinn and Miles reunite and he follows her and learns
- 10:37Speaker 1: she's been tracking Spot through dimensions. Just tells Gwen to
- 10:41Speaker 1: leave Miles behind, but Miles jumps in the portal after
- 10:44Speaker 1: Gwen taking them to Mumbatan on Earth fifty one oh one,
- 10:48Speaker 1: Mumbatan being Mumbai in Manhattan mixed together. They join forces
- 10:54Speaker 1: with that universe as Spider Man, Paveteer Prabakar and Hobie
- 10:59Speaker 1: Brown Spider Punk as you might know him, to take
- 11:04Speaker 1: on Spot, who is draining that universe's collider to increase
- 11:07Speaker 1: his power. Spot escapes, but he leaves Miles with this
- 11:11Speaker 1: vision of the death of his father Jeff, who had
- 11:14Speaker 1: just been promoted to police captain. While Pavteer is saving
- 11:19Speaker 1: his girlfriend, he sees her father, the police captain, in danger,
- 11:24Speaker 1: but is unable to get to him in time without
- 11:26Speaker 1: dropping his girlfriend, so Miles saves him instead. But Mumbaton
- 11:30Speaker 1: starts to collapse because Miles has disrupted a quote cannon event.
- 11:35Speaker 1: While some Spider People come to do damage control, Gwynn,
- 11:39Speaker 1: Hoby and Miles go to the Society's headquarters on Miguel's world,
- 11:43Speaker 1: Earth nine two eight, and it's this huge complex with
- 11:46Speaker 1: hundreds of Spider people. Okay, so brief aside. I know
- 11:52Speaker 1: I probably don't have to explain this because I've talked
- 11:54Speaker 1: about it a million times on here, but cannon is
- 11:57Speaker 1: something that is produced when accepted authentic author and in
- 12:02Speaker 1: something like Marvel, it's even more than that. It is
- 12:05Speaker 1: the current accepted properties storylines, works that are accepted as
- 12:11Speaker 1: the quote real ongoing story as decided by whoever owns
- 12:16Speaker 1: the property. In this case, it would be Marvel slash Disney,
- 12:19Speaker 1: i e. Anything not canon would be something like Legends,
- 12:23Speaker 1: which is what it's called in Star Wars, and no
- 12:25Speaker 1: longer has any impact on the current canon, though a
- 12:29Speaker 1: lot of crossover can be had there, which is very confusing,
- 12:33Speaker 1: very very confusing. There is also head canon, which is
- 12:37Speaker 1: like your own personal idea of what happened and you
- 12:42Speaker 1: keep it to yourself, but that's just in your head,
- 12:45Speaker 1: that's how it went. And then there's fanin, which is
- 12:48Speaker 1: like when a bunch of head canons come together and
- 12:51Speaker 1: make fanin. And that can be confusing because you think
- 12:53Speaker 1: you hear it all the time because fans believe it.
- 12:56Speaker 1: You think that it's canon, but it's fanin.
- 13:02Speaker 2: That's a whole TikTok trend. Now I know, to make mistakes.
- 13:06Speaker 3: It's essentially I think when people make mistakes or do
- 13:08Speaker 3: something that's so common, but it's like they're gonna.
- 13:11Speaker 2: Have to learn for themselves. It's just cannon. It took
- 13:15Speaker 2: me a long time to be like what, Yeah, I.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Kept seeing headlines about it. I assumed it was something
- 13:21Speaker 1: like very silly, like this is my canon event and
- 13:24Speaker 1: you stebbed a toe or something, But I know, I
- 13:26Speaker 1: don't know.
- 13:26Speaker 3: It's essentially like every person, every fandom or every group
- 13:30Speaker 3: of like growing into this age or doing this. I
- 13:33Speaker 3: guess it could be like when I say my niece
- 13:34Speaker 3: is gonna come to Atlanta. She'll learn for herself and
- 13:38Speaker 3: then become more liberated. I guess in that way liberal.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Uh huh, that's like that's canon that way interesting.
- 13:48Speaker 1: All right, well, listeners, let me know, because I yeah,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I was.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I think that's what I assumed. Well, that's what it seems.
- 13:55Speaker 1: You can have a lot of fun with it, I'll
- 13:56Speaker 1: say that. So in this case of the movie, a
- 14:00Speaker 1: cannon event would be something that has to happen, yes,
- 14:03Speaker 1: because it is cannon. So Miles is reunited with his mentor,
- 14:08Speaker 1: Peter B. Parker, and introduced to his daughter may Day
- 14:11Speaker 1: or May, who Peter had in part because he wanted
- 14:15Speaker 1: to raise a child like Miles. Miguel informs Miles that
- 14:19Speaker 1: every Spider Man has a cannon event that cannot be
- 14:23Speaker 1: changed without wrecking reality, usually the death of a loved one.
- 14:27Speaker 1: After a tragedy in his own universe, Miguel attempted to
- 14:30Speaker 1: replace another version of himself who is happy, but it
- 14:34Speaker 1: led to that universe to collapse, and he did care
- 14:36Speaker 1: about that version of his family, but they all kind
- 14:40Speaker 1: of got wiped out. Miles realizes that his cannon event
- 14:44Speaker 1: is coming in two days, the murder of his father
- 14:47Speaker 1: by spot. He tries to escape to change it, but
- 14:50Speaker 1: Miguel imprisons him. Later, Hoby helps break him out before
- 14:54Speaker 1: jumping away in a portal, quitting the society. He's a
- 14:57Speaker 1: very like fight the System, Fight the Man. I'm done
- 15:04Speaker 1: and they have these handy dandy wristband portal jumping things,
- 15:08Speaker 1: which is the gizmo from the end credits of the
- 15:10Speaker 1: first one. Miguel orders all Spider People to stop Miles,
- 15:16Speaker 1: resulting in a hectic chase where he tells Miles that
- 15:19Speaker 1: he is a mistake, that without him his realities Peter
- 15:22Speaker 1: Parker would still be alive, and that Spider was never
- 15:26Speaker 1: supposed to bite him and the reality the Spider came
- 15:29Speaker 1: from doesn't have a Spider Man. So Miles manages to
- 15:35Speaker 1: get back to the Quote Get Home Machine with the
- 15:39Speaker 1: help of Spider Bite also known as Margo, and this
- 15:43Speaker 1: is a machine that uses DNA to send people to
- 15:45Speaker 1: their home dimension. He returns to his home dimension after
- 15:48Speaker 1: realizing that Gwenn and Peter b knew about all of this,
- 15:52Speaker 1: and he feels very betrayed by that. He reveals that
- 15:55Speaker 1: he is Spider Man to his mom, but she doesn't
- 15:58Speaker 1: know who he's talking about, and then Uncle Aaron arrives
- 16:03Speaker 1: and Miles realizes he is in the wrong reality. The
- 16:06Speaker 1: reality of the Spider that bit him was from this reality,
- 16:10Speaker 1: and it is the one that has no Spider Man,
- 16:12Speaker 1: so you can see chaos outside. Aaron surprise attacks Miles,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and when Miles wakes up, he's tied to a punching bag,
- 16:20Speaker 1: which by the ways of running joke about Spider Man
- 16:21Speaker 1: being a punching bag, and he learns in this universe
- 16:25Speaker 1: Aaron isn't the Prowler Miles is. Meanwhile, Miguel kicks Gwynn
- 16:31Speaker 1: out of the Spider Society and she returns to her
- 16:33Speaker 1: universe to learn that her father quit his job. They
- 16:36Speaker 1: reconcile and he gives her the Portal watch thing I'm
- 16:40Speaker 1: sure there's official name, but you know that Hobie left
- 16:44Speaker 1: for her. She uses it to go to Miles's universe
- 16:48Speaker 1: intending to help him, only to learn he's not there.
- 16:52Speaker 1: A team from the Society are there too, Miguel and
- 16:55Speaker 1: Jess and Scarlet Spider who's like the really angsty emo
- 16:58Speaker 1: Spider Man Gwenn and it puts together a team to
- 17:01Speaker 1: help Miles, including Peter b Spider Noir, Spider Ham, Pabbeteer, Hobie, Margo,
- 17:07Speaker 1: and may Day. And that's how it ends. Cliffhanger. So
- 17:22Speaker 1: in this alternate universe, his dad Miles, his dad is
- 17:26Speaker 1: dead and Aaron has survived. But that brings me to
- 17:28Speaker 1: one of the things that of course kept popping up
- 17:30Speaker 1: in my feed. The creators have said this is their
- 17:33Speaker 1: version of the Empire strikes Back. It has the vision
- 17:37Speaker 1: of losing a loved one, but it's inverted because it's
- 17:39Speaker 1: so it's sort of like the reveal at the end
- 17:43Speaker 1: is that, oh, I'm the villain and oh my dad
- 17:47Speaker 1: is dead. Instead of Empire strikes Back, the reveal is, oh,
- 17:50Speaker 1: my dad's the villain and he's a wife. Oh yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But it has a bunch of like if again, if
- 17:56Speaker 1: I was left to my d brothers, as the cool
- 17:58Speaker 1: people say, I would just go into the and talk
- 18:01Speaker 1: about hilarities. And the difference is, but one person pointed out,
- 18:08Speaker 1: is actually more like Matrix Reloaded, because you get to
- 18:11Speaker 1: the end of Matrix Reloaded and you realize, like this
- 18:14Speaker 1: whole time, you thought you were fighting to do the
- 18:16Speaker 1: right thing and do good, and there's this whole system
- 18:18Speaker 1: in place that is keeping you from changing anything. So
- 18:22Speaker 1: I thought that was interesting. There's also a big a
- 18:28Speaker 1: I don't know if it's theory is the right word,
- 18:29Speaker 1: but a lot of people have pointed out that in
- 18:32Speaker 1: the first one, when Miles and Spider Man first interact,
- 18:38Speaker 1: Spider Man has like the red blue like spider tingle
- 18:41Speaker 1: things happening, and Miles has purple and green and they
- 18:44Speaker 1: kind of have like this headache moment. And some people
- 18:48Speaker 1: have said he was supposed to be that world's Prowler
- 18:52Speaker 1: because of the Spider from the other universe. Things went
- 18:57Speaker 1: to differently, like.
- 18:59Speaker 2: When a Gleren dies, he becomes the new Prowler. Is
- 19:01Speaker 2: that what it's supposed to be.
- 19:02Speaker 1: It's supposed to be. Yeah, like he was because he
- 19:05Speaker 1: loved to sell Claren. Yeah, I was following in his footsteps,
- 19:08Speaker 1: really wanted to do it. They haven't. I don't think
- 19:11Speaker 1: the creators have said if they meant to do it
- 19:13Speaker 1: or not, but it feels very They don't usually put
- 19:17Speaker 1: anything in these movies without it meaning something, so which
- 19:23Speaker 1: leads us too the discussion. One of the big things
- 19:27Speaker 1: people have talked about is whether or not there's a
- 19:30Speaker 1: trans character in this movie, and so the reason people
- 19:36Speaker 1: are talking about that is because quote the film subtly
- 19:41Speaker 1: integrates additional affirmation for the transgender community, and Spider Gwynn,
- 19:46Speaker 1: voiced by Hailey Steinfeld, prominently displaying pink and blue hues
- 19:49Speaker 1: symbolic of the transgender flag, while her father's police uniform
- 19:53Speaker 1: briefly reveals a badge adorned with the trans flag. And
- 19:57Speaker 1: so in Gwenn's world, it's very it's why color based.
- 20:02Speaker 1: The colors are representative of her emotions and how she
- 20:05Speaker 1: feels at that moment, and most often they are the
- 20:10Speaker 1: colors of the trans flag, and the artists clearly know
- 20:13Speaker 1: what those colors are if they have a trans flag
- 20:15Speaker 1: featured in two different instances in her world. So the
- 20:20Speaker 1: art styles in these movies are very specific to each
- 20:24Speaker 1: character and they are meant to communicate something about that character.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Here's a quote from one of the creators about the
- 20:30Speaker 1: futuristic slash blade runner style that they use for Miguel's world,
- 20:35Speaker 1: and you can see the lines on Miguel, like the
- 20:37Speaker 1: pencil is unfinished. It's kind of a cruel joke on Miguel,
- 20:40Speaker 1: who's essentially asserting that the future is written. But the
- 20:43Speaker 1: image is constantly undermining his argument and saying, in fact,
- 20:47Speaker 1: the future is not completely fleshed out. And here's a
- 20:50Speaker 1: quote from vox. Devotees have pointed out that the Spider
- 20:54Speaker 1: Woman is literally Eg has a trans flag in her room,
- 20:58Speaker 1: and symbolically EG experiences the allegory of coming out depicted
- 21:02Speaker 1: as a trans ally, if not trans herself. Gwen's possible
- 21:06Speaker 1: transness and even her allyship is a big deal.
- 21:10Speaker 3: So from fan the green Casey quote, trans and even
- 21:13Speaker 3: SYS fans have every right to say Gwen Stacy is trans.
- 21:18Speaker 3: Even if the movies never outright confirment, we can't deny
- 21:21Speaker 3: that it's been hinted at. The fact is, if she
- 21:24Speaker 3: can make somebody feel represented, who are you to tell
- 21:27Speaker 3: them they're wrong. Fans also noticed that Gwenn's father, policeman
- 21:31Speaker 3: George Stacy, has a transgender flag that he wears on
- 21:35Speaker 3: his uniform. That's notable for a couple of reasons. One
- 21:38Speaker 3: of those is that in the real world, trans activists
- 21:42Speaker 3: have said that trans people, especially black transgender people, often
- 21:45Speaker 3: face discrimination from law enforcement. Said discrimination is a huge
- 21:51Speaker 3: reason why trans people don't feel comfortable asking police for help.
- 21:55Speaker 1: Yes, and you see him wearing the flag after he
- 21:58Speaker 1: accepts her identity a spider woman and believes her because
- 22:02Speaker 1: she's continually telling him this and he doesn't leave her,
- 22:05Speaker 1: indicating that he is an ally and some speculate that
- 22:08Speaker 1: he would only be an ally in the context of
- 22:11Speaker 1: Gwenn's potential of being trans if he had a trans
- 22:14Speaker 1: family member. Then it made me happy because the Mark
- 22:18Speaker 1: Hamill gift is going around again of when he says,
- 22:23Speaker 1: if you believe Luke Skywalker is gay, he's gay. Yes,
- 22:28Speaker 1: But that brings us to the question why not do
- 22:30Speaker 1: it out right? Countries censor LGBTQ plus content and studios
- 22:34Speaker 1: know it, and they are studios are primarily profit driven. Again,
- 22:39Speaker 1: they are not allies. That's what we talked about in
- 22:40Speaker 1: our recent episode about what's happening and a bunch of
- 22:44Speaker 1: a bunch of these companies in the US, even with
- 22:47Speaker 1: this small mention, like I didn't even notice it the
- 22:50Speaker 1: first time this movie has been banned in two countries,
- 22:53Speaker 1: and yeah, that's what we talked about. With what's going
- 22:55Speaker 1: on with Target bud Light facing backlash. It's not an
- 23:00Speaker 1: excuse at all, but that is what they're thinking. And
- 23:05Speaker 1: I will note the creators have kind of flat out
- 23:08Speaker 1: said that the Studio metals, they're kind of big sneaky
- 23:16Speaker 1: about it, but basically they were fired from solo. Oh.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I don't know if you know that, but anyway, they were,
- 23:21Speaker 1: and they have said about that. I always remember the
- 23:24Speaker 1: original trilogy were independent movies. Yeah, something else before we
- 23:31Speaker 1: move on from Gwen Stacy. Gwinn Stacy, it's kind of
- 23:36Speaker 1: infamous for an example of fridging. It's not just that,
- 23:43Speaker 1: but in Spider Man to the Amazing Spider Man two
- 23:47Speaker 1: there's that kind of like slow mow fall that she has.
- 23:50Speaker 1: But that's based on the night Gwen Stacy died, which
- 23:55Speaker 1: is this very well known comic and when it came out,
- 24:01Speaker 1: people were shocked and Marvel received death threats because she
- 24:04Speaker 1: was a popular character. People loved her and she died
- 24:09Speaker 1: because it was implied, it was very dark. It was
- 24:12Speaker 1: a like stark turn for their normal storytelling because the
- 24:17Speaker 1: implication was maybe he had killed her from the whiplash
- 24:20Speaker 1: of catching her and that's how she died. But it
- 24:24Speaker 1: started this whole thing called Gwen Stacy syndrome because because
- 24:32Speaker 1: that was it was such a popular plotline. Even though
- 24:36Speaker 1: people were pissed about it and they were heard about
- 24:37Speaker 1: it. It became like this iconic scene, and in every Spider
- 24:41Speaker 1: Man movie, I'm pretty sure literally every Spider Man movie,
- 24:44Speaker 1: there's some kind of reference of like somebody following and
- 24:48Speaker 1: you catch them with the web. It became known as
- 24:51Speaker 1: Gwen Stacy syndrome, and it was kind of the start
- 24:54Speaker 1: of like, it's just not a safe to date be
- 24:57Speaker 1: a woman dating Spider Man. It doesn't matter if you're
- 25:01Speaker 1: just like a one off or like you've been dating
- 25:04Speaker 1: for a while, like you are not safe. So it's
- 25:07Speaker 1: this whole thing. I would love to come back and
- 25:09Speaker 1: talk about that more. And in this movie, Gwen Stacy
- 25:12Speaker 1: says in every other universe, Gwen Stacy falls for Spider Man,
- 25:15Speaker 1: which kind of implies like love, but it also implies, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 1: a literal fall. Yes. But let us move on for
- 25:24Speaker 1: now to canon events and problems with fandom and cannon.
- 25:30Speaker 1: We've talked about toxic fandom at length, but that's kind
- 25:33Speaker 1: of what's going on here. From the Verge. Here's a quote.
- 25:37Speaker 1: It's an insidious, pernicious and this is especially important racist
- 25:41Speaker 1: idea that has thrived in segments of the Spider Man
- 25:44Speaker 1: fandom ever since Miles first appeared in Marvel's comics, and
- 25:47Speaker 1: the way across the Spider Verse subverts it to deepen
- 25:49Speaker 1: Miles's lore is one of the movie's most spectacular feats.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So they were saying the real villain is not Miguel
- 25:58Speaker 1: or the spot, it is this toxic fandom. When Miles,
- 26:04Speaker 1: who is a teen of black and Puerto Rican descent,
- 26:07Speaker 1: was introduced in twenty eleven, there was a huge backlash
- 26:09Speaker 1: as sort of like not my Spider Man thing that
- 26:12Speaker 1: was definitely soaked in racism going on, and this overall
- 26:16Speaker 1: idea that he wasn't as good as Peter Parker, that
- 26:20Speaker 1: he was not really Spider Man, which is at the
- 26:24Speaker 1: heart of the whole film of Miles being told he's
- 26:26Speaker 1: a mistake. If you weren't here, your universe of Spider
- 26:29Speaker 1: Man would still be here. You're not supposed to be here,
- 26:32Speaker 1: that he's the quote original anomaly that started this whole thing,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and Miles saying I'm going to do things my own way.
- 26:39Speaker 1: We don't have time to get into this. But also
- 26:43Speaker 1: when Miles was first introduced, he was not given a
- 26:46Speaker 1: lot of depth. That is not to excuse any racist
- 26:50Speaker 1: attacks at all, but it did improve like but that
- 26:54Speaker 1: says something too of people say like, well, you gave
- 26:57Speaker 1: Peter Parker so much attention in time and depth, and
- 26:59Speaker 1: then you and produce this character and really didn't do it.
- 27:02Speaker 1: But these movies have and games, the games too have
- 27:06Speaker 1: really given like fleshed out his character a lot more.
- 27:09Speaker 1: There's the idea I saw a quote from one of
- 27:13Speaker 1: the creators involved of like encountering this anger from fans,
- 27:18Speaker 1: so that has to be the same story over and over,
- 27:21Speaker 1: and if you deviate from that in any way, just
- 27:24Speaker 1: anger about it. And so on the movie, it's Miles
- 27:28Speaker 1: tampering with Cannon that makes Miguel angry, not the dimension
- 27:33Speaker 1: jumping villain that is like what really upsets him. And
- 27:37Speaker 1: then Canon getting to dictate who gets to be Spider
- 27:41Speaker 1: Man when the message at the heart of these movies
- 27:44Speaker 1: is that anyone can be Spider Man. I also think
- 27:49Speaker 1: there's a moment of that's like examining bad Allyship at
- 27:52Speaker 1: the end with Gwenn and Peter b choosing to protect
- 27:57Speaker 1: the status quo over him, like, didn't they didn't tell
- 27:59Speaker 1: him anything about it. They were willing to like just
- 28:02Speaker 1: go ahead with this, and then realizing that they were wrong,
- 28:06Speaker 1: and then you do have. People loved it, but Hobie's
- 28:10Speaker 1: whole fight the power vibe, this is wrong, we shouldn't
- 28:14Speaker 1: be doing it. It is also a coming of age
- 28:18Speaker 1: story for sure, realizing that things weren't what you thought
- 28:23Speaker 1: that they were, and identity growing up as a superhero,
- 28:29Speaker 1: for sure. According it to Box's alex Abod Santos, who
- 28:33Speaker 1: I have We've been quoting throughout across the Spider Verse
- 28:36Speaker 1: centralizes queer and trans imagery, symbolism, and allegories while creating
- 28:41Speaker 1: a Spider Man whose narrative identity operates with a lot
- 28:44Speaker 1: of components of a coming out story. So that's actually
- 28:47Speaker 1: from movie Web about the Vox article that we have.
- 28:52Speaker 1: But yeah, like the whole idea of the fear of
- 28:54Speaker 1: telling your guardians, of being told you don't belong, his
- 28:58Speaker 1: mother's message of never let anyone tell you you don't
- 29:01Speaker 1: belong fits into all of this.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Yeah, And the quote goes on Rio's worries about her
- 29:06Speaker 3: son mirror so many fears that parents of LGBTQ children have,
- 29:11Speaker 3: mainly that family acceptance is the easy part, and it's
- 29:14Speaker 3: that not being able to protect them from the world
- 29:16Speaker 3: that they live in is much more difficult. She knows
- 29:20Speaker 3: he has a secret and she'll love him no matter what,
- 29:22Speaker 3: but she also knows that not everyone will accept her
- 29:25Speaker 3: son as much as she does.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And yeah, that's from the box article.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, And there are a lot of articles about
- 29:32Speaker 1: this about kind of the how queer people connect to
- 29:36Speaker 1: that idea of you have to hire this part of
- 29:37Speaker 1: yourself and being afraid to share it. So that's really interesting.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I think that's one of the reasons it resonates for
- 29:43Speaker 1: so many people too. Well, we have to talk about
- 29:47Speaker 1: the animation a little bit. We want to rain myself in.
- 29:50Speaker 1: But I would say, literally every frame, pause it it's
- 29:53Speaker 1: our I did it with the first one. It's really fun.
- 29:57Speaker 1: There's so much going on. I remember a lot of
- 30:00Speaker 1: people were saying, oh, I'm so overstimulated after seeing it.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And I saw it before. You and I went together
- 30:06Speaker 1: right on my second time, but my first time, I
- 30:09Speaker 1: was in the front row and I was like all
- 30:13Speaker 1: the way back like a played interurbulence.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean both of them.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I was like, I because I saw have bad vision anyway,
- 30:22Speaker 3: and then my contacts often get blurry, but but the
- 30:25Speaker 3: way it sets up, I adjusted my contacts a lot
- 30:28Speaker 3: realizing Oh no, that's just that's just the.
- 30:30Speaker 2: Way it is. It's my vision as I typically think.
- 30:33Speaker 3: It is a lot like oh god, blinking, so many blinkings.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Yeah, but it is really cool, like all the different
- 30:43Speaker 1: styles and frame rates and how they interact. And it
- 30:46Speaker 1: is also, I will say, the longest ever animated film
- 30:49Speaker 1: produced by an American studio. And it is part it's
- 30:54Speaker 1: essentially part one of two. I mean, it's a trilogy,
- 30:56Speaker 1: but I really feel like this one and the next
- 30:58Speaker 1: one are like a two parter. They said they tried
- 31:01Speaker 1: to put it all on one movie, but it just
- 31:02Speaker 1: was not happening. A fourteen year old did get hired
- 31:06Speaker 1: to animate the Lego scene. The creators saw it on YouTube,
- 31:09Speaker 1: did not realize it was fourteen year old. They were
- 31:13Speaker 1: so impressed. They were like, all right.
- 31:15Speaker 3: They have a major motion picture under their resume at fourteen,
- 31:20Speaker 3: Like they are, They're done, They're ready, like they make
- 31:24Speaker 3: these movies.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Yes. Yes. There have been some articles coming out lately,
- 31:30Speaker 1: which is especially interesting because we're still in the midst
- 31:33Speaker 1: of the writer's strike, about some animators saying that this
- 31:37Speaker 1: was not sustainable, they can't keep working like this. In
- 31:41Speaker 1: the words of this person. The next movie, which is
- 31:43Speaker 1: supposed to come out in March, might not come out
- 31:46Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four at all because it is so much,
- 31:50Speaker 1: and several of the animators quit. One called it death
- 31:54Speaker 1: by a thousand paper cuts because of the lack of
- 31:57Speaker 1: understanding by Lord, especially in this article. It was a
- 32:01Speaker 1: variety article about how three D animation works and late revisions,
- 32:06Speaker 1: so essentially like, at a certain point you want to
- 32:09Speaker 1: be I can't just revise this at the end. It
- 32:12Speaker 1: has to happen a lot in the beginning. But it
- 32:15Speaker 1: was kind of the opposite of that, and apparently he
- 32:18Speaker 1: needed to get every sequence approved. But it was interesting
- 32:23Speaker 1: because they were talking about what they're talking about with
- 32:26Speaker 1: the writers strike right now, and what we've talked about
- 32:30Speaker 1: and industries like this and like that, because they were saying,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know you do you want to work on something
- 32:37Speaker 1: that you love and they know that. And also if
- 32:41Speaker 1: you leave as an artist and someone else takes over
- 32:44Speaker 1: than your name, it's not yours anymore, especially if they
- 32:47Speaker 1: fix it at the end that revision. So they were
- 32:50Speaker 1: talking about like maybe we need to do something with
- 32:53Speaker 1: the union or something like that, So we'll see how
- 32:57Speaker 1: that plays out there is also to add more work
- 33:01Speaker 1: onto them. A woman led spinoff called Spider Woman in
- 33:06Speaker 1: the Mix. I don't know much about that yet. I
- 33:09Speaker 1: don't think they've really said much about it. And then
- 33:12Speaker 1: a lot of articles have also come out, and I've
- 33:16Speaker 1: made the argument that the success of these films shows
- 33:18Speaker 1: that people do want to see more diverse representation, that
- 33:21Speaker 1: it is more representative of all of us. Here's a
- 33:24Speaker 1: quote from NPR and North America. Exit tracking found that
- 33:28Speaker 1: the audience was about one third Latino and another third
- 33:31Speaker 1: Black and Asian. Diversity percentage is far higher than for
- 33:34Speaker 1: most superhero films. And like, going back to the trans
- 33:40Speaker 1: the possibility of a trans character, Like so many people
- 33:43Speaker 1: were talking about that, and it's one of those things
- 33:45Speaker 1: like I'm really happy that's in there. That's a flag
- 33:47Speaker 1: that says protect trans kids in Enguin's room, but it's
- 33:52Speaker 1: also so frustrating that it's like those little scraps for
- 33:55Speaker 1: your like, ah representation. I mean, I'm super thrilled it's
- 33:59Speaker 1: in there, but it's also like we could get more.
- 34:03Speaker 1: We could get more. And then because I have been
- 34:16Speaker 1: really good and I haven't gone too long, We're gonna
- 34:19Speaker 1: have a fun bit at the bottom, okay, which is
- 34:23Speaker 1: just some of my random Easter eggs.
- 34:26Speaker 3: All right, okay, so just behind the curtain here I
- 34:32Speaker 3: saw the outro. I thought it was the end. There's
- 34:35Speaker 3: a whole full other page.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Yeah, because I didn't.
- 34:39Speaker 1: I was gonna cut it if we went too long.
- 34:42Speaker 3: But we did, okay, So it was a surprise. This
- 34:46Speaker 3: whole recording has surprise.
- 34:47Speaker 1: I'm just I like to keep you on your toes.
- 34:50Speaker 1: You I like you do. You're good. So a couple
- 34:54Speaker 1: of random Easter eggs. There is a I believe it's
- 34:57Speaker 1: a billboard that says all of it always all over
- 35:00Speaker 1: the place, and it's a bagel place, which is everything
- 35:03Speaker 1: everywhere all at once. For a love, there's a venom bit.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I love that Donald Gover does show it.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Donald Glover.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of there's a couple, not a
- 35:15Speaker 1: lot of folks at Marvel's as in the MCUs, because
- 35:20Speaker 1: soon this will be Marvel as well. Spider Man like
- 35:23Speaker 1: Doctor Strange.
- 35:24Speaker 4: And to.
- 35:28Speaker 1: Yes, but I really want to go through a very
- 35:34Speaker 1: fun list. This is so minuscule. So Polygon has this
- 35:38Speaker 1: article where they identified like pretty much all of the
- 35:42Speaker 1: Spider people, and some of them are so funny. But
- 35:45Speaker 1: please look up the article. I was cackling reading it,
- 35:49Speaker 1: and I can't believe this is all real. But it
- 35:51Speaker 1: is so. All these quotes are from them. But I thought, Samantha,
- 35:54Speaker 1: you and I could go back and forth with a
- 35:56Speaker 1: few of my favorite ones. Okay, let's start with jess Drew,
- 36:02Speaker 1: a quote created in nineteen seventy six in a rush
- 36:05Speaker 1: to stop an animation studio from grabbing the trademark to
- 36:07Speaker 1: the Spider Woman name. Comic book. Jessica actually has no
- 36:11Speaker 1: real relation to either Peter Parker or Miles Morales, having
- 36:14Speaker 1: instead acquired her powers in a bewilderingly arcane origin involving hydra,
- 36:19Speaker 1: her geneticist father, and possibly a talking cow. Spider versus
- 36:24Speaker 1: Chess is thus a wholesale reinvention of the concept, though comics,
- 36:28Speaker 1: Chess did famously have a book in which she did
- 36:30Speaker 1: superhero stuff while pregnant, which she did in the movie Yes.
- 36:34Speaker 2: Hobby Brown, He was fun.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Hoby won the affection of fans by siding with people
- 36:40Speaker 3: against their corporate oppressors, leading the downtrodden masses against the establishment,
- 36:45Speaker 3: and breaking his guitar over the head of the United
- 36:48Speaker 3: States President. I like it.
- 36:50Speaker 1: I love it.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Also, he's very English punk.
- 36:52Speaker 1: I love that.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 36:54Speaker 2: In the in the it's.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Like magazine cut out santamation.
- 36:58Speaker 2: So good.
- 36:58Speaker 1: It's so good, bombastic bag man. Peter Parker learned to
- 37:04Speaker 1: his horror that the black costume he had been wearing
- 37:06Speaker 1: was actually a symbiote alien from another planet. That left
- 37:09Speaker 1: him briefly without any costume to wear around town, but
- 37:12Speaker 1: longtime phrenemy Johnny Human Torch Storm lint to hand, giving
- 37:17Speaker 1: Parker one of his own extra suits, a paper lunch
- 37:20Speaker 1: bag to put over his face, and a kick me
- 37:23Speaker 1: sign surreptitiously taped to his back for good measure. Oh
- 37:28Speaker 1: my gosh, I can't believe this is real.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Spider Cat, which, yeah, you said spider people earlier.
- 37:34Speaker 2: There are a lot, a lot of them.
- 37:37Speaker 3: He is a spider man and also a cat, the
- 37:40Speaker 3: typical coutterie of gamers from Earth nine nine to nine.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Spider Cat gained his powers through an encounter with one
- 37:47Speaker 3: of the mystical Spider Totems in an untold tale that
- 37:51Speaker 3: presumably makes as much sense as any other story involving
- 37:55Speaker 3: the mystical Spider Totems.
- 37:57Speaker 2: That's the thing. It's a thing.
- 38:00Speaker 1: I spider Verse. But wow, okay, yes, listen to this one,
- 38:10Speaker 1: Teeter Tarker. Spider Rex is just because it's heterodactyl, so
- 38:19Speaker 1: maybe yeah, yeah, but it is spelled everybody p T
- 38:23Speaker 1: e t R p t A r k e R.
- 38:27Speaker 1: But anyway, spider Rex a resident of the prehistoric world
- 38:31Speaker 1: of Earth sixty six Wildfowler t Rex Peter Darker had
- 38:36Speaker 1: a chance encounter with a spider filled meteorite, granting him
- 38:40Speaker 1: wondrous spider like powers. In an early battle against his
- 38:44Speaker 1: nemesis Nerana Soorman Uh, Tarker accidentally allowed a tree branch
- 38:50Speaker 1: to take the life of the villain, teaching him an
- 38:52Speaker 1: important lesson about responsibility. So good.
- 38:59Speaker 3: And then we have the Peter Parked car, which is
- 39:05Speaker 3: an anthropomorphic talking car Spider Man.
- 39:11Speaker 1: These are all in the movie movies.
