- 0:00Speaker 1: Okay, this.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Would almost sound like it could belong in a yacht
- 0:19Speaker 1: rock genre but it's jimmy buffett and very little of
- 0:22Speaker 1: uh jimmy's catalog would belong in yacht rock and he's
- 0:25Speaker 1: probably uh up in heaven happy about that but uh
- 0:29Speaker 1: it does fit the mood it means it's our time
- 0:32Speaker 1: for our weekly conversation with roger wallace sports director kxn
- 0:35Speaker 1: my broadcast partner on uh Longhorn football and also part
- 0:39Speaker 1: of our broadcast team for men's basketball, women's basketball, Longhorn baseball,
- 0:43Speaker 1: and the resident Jimmy Buffett authority. Did it surprise you
- 0:47Speaker 1: that Jake rolled out with this one? I had never
- 0:49Speaker 1: heard this particular Jimmy Buffett. What's the name of it again, Jake?
- 0:53Speaker 1: It's Halloween. Desperation Samba Halloween in Tijuana.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, Jake went timely.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How about that? How about that?
- 1:04Speaker 2: I don't think there's a deep meaning behind this song
- 1:07Speaker 2: other than you go across the border in San Diego
- 1:10Speaker 2: and things can go south literally and figuratively.
- 1:16Speaker 1: What album is this off of? Last Mango in Paris.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, this is another mid-80s.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 1:23Speaker 2: But it does show up his multilingual skills there with
- 1:29Speaker 2: some Spanish. We've had one particular harbor with Portuguese. He
- 1:34Speaker 2: does a lot of French. So, yeah, we're getting the
- 1:36Speaker 2: whole globe going here.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Wow, that's amazing. And to come up with something there
- 1:41Speaker 1: Halloween-related I think was really, really cool.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Trying to think about something for Missouri next week. Jake,
- 1:48Speaker 2: you can go Mark Twain theme. He's a big Mark
- 1:51Speaker 2: Twain guy.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Yeah, Mark Twain from Hannibal Moe. So, yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: we'll keep that in mind for next week. Sounds good.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Derailed early. Yeah. I was amused by something Sark said
- 2:08Speaker 1: in the media Zoom today. He also said it when
- 2:10Speaker 1: we recorded Longhorn Weekly last night. And he's kind of
- 2:17Speaker 1: leaning into the Halloween thing. He's talking about, you know,
- 2:20Speaker 1: it's great to have a Saturday night game. But on
- 2:22Speaker 1: top of that, Halloween, we had Quandre Diggs as our
- 2:25Speaker 1: special guest. One little spoiler alert. When we got off
- 2:28Speaker 1: the air, he asked Quandre, and he always asks the
- 2:31Speaker 1: guests if they're going to come to the game. And
- 2:33Speaker 1: about 99% of the time, especially those who are living locally,
- 2:37Speaker 1: say yes. Quandre had to say no, and the reason
- 2:41Speaker 1: he had to say no, I think he's got three
- 2:43Speaker 1: small children, and they were there along with his wife,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and they were kind of running around there in the
- 2:47Speaker 1: recruiting lounge where we were recording the show, and he goes,
- 2:50Speaker 1: if I don't take them trick-or-treating, I'm in a world
- 2:52Speaker 1: of trouble. So he had to do that. But Sark's
- 2:56Speaker 1: kind of leaning into this whole Halloween thing. You know,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I think about this, Roger, in, what was it, 99, Texas,
- 3:03Speaker 1: with the win over third-ranked Nebraska on Halloween, and the
- 3:06Speaker 1: Mike Jones touchdown pass when And Nebraska came in favorite
- 3:11Speaker 1: and game day was there. And then that was the
- 3:14Speaker 1: night where Matthew McConaughey got arrested for the naked bongo playing.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I mean, that was Halloween. I don't know that this
- 3:19Speaker 1: could top that, but at least is important to mark
- 3:23Speaker 1: the day, right? no doubt.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And, and it starts good about, you know, that kind
- 3:29Speaker 2: of stuff, keep it, you know, kind of keeping it
- 3:30Speaker 2: timely and understanding, you know, what's right in front of them.
- 3:34Speaker 2: And the fact that it's another primetime game and, and
- 3:37Speaker 2: the end of this three game homestand, but yeah, this
- 3:40Speaker 2: is obviously big for, you know, we're redundant now to
- 3:42Speaker 2: this point in the season where they're all big and,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and obviously Mississippi state's beat up, but you know, Florida
- 3:47Speaker 2: did with a backup quarterback. So I think they want
- 3:51Speaker 2: to keep heading in the right direction and, and, Man,
- 3:54Speaker 2: not have these third quarters that you had to reach
- 3:58Speaker 2: for the nitroglycerin pills to to quote John Rothstein of
- 4:02Speaker 2: CBS Sports.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely. Because it is kind of strange.
- 4:08Speaker 1: And then you add to that the injuries. Obviously, Camario
- 4:10Speaker 1: Taylor from Mississippi State being out. Trevor Goosby's out for Texas.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Colin Simmons' list is questionable, but, you know, questionable means,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know, there's a question as to whether he could
- 4:21Speaker 1: even be available. I think what's more important probably here
- 4:24Speaker 1: is seeing the probable status for Hollywood Smothers and also
- 4:29Speaker 1: Cam Coleman.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's really encouraging. Coleman just didn't look like,
- 4:35Speaker 2: you know, the fact that he came back out and
- 4:36Speaker 2: street closed so quick. And obviously Smothers had a pretty
- 4:39Speaker 2: big contraption on his arm during the game. So that's
- 4:43Speaker 2: certainly encouraging if they get one or both of those.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Guys back and just, you know, give credit.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Give this offense another weapon that they didn't have pretty
- 4:52Speaker 2: much the entire second half with Coleman, obviously, in the game.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But I don't know if that would diminish Michael Terry.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I think they like having that big back, so it'll
- 5:01Speaker 2: be interesting to see how they continue to work him
- 5:03Speaker 2: into more touches.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Right, exactly. And then the other thing I think is
- 5:07Speaker 1: kind of intriguing about all of this is that, yes,
- 5:11Speaker 1: Florida did come in with a backup quarterback, but you
- 5:13Speaker 1: knew who was going to take the snap. We don't
- 5:16Speaker 1: know exactly, although one would think it's probably going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: be Billy Puckett, but it could be A.J. Swan. And
- 5:23Speaker 1: I did ask Sark about, you know, if they do
- 5:26Speaker 1: the deep dive, you know, to check out his footage
- 5:28Speaker 1: from Appalachian State. And he said, absolutely, because you have
- 5:31Speaker 1: to do that now, especially in this day and age
- 5:32Speaker 1: of the portal to do that. But he did go
- 5:35Speaker 1: on to make the point, I think, yesterday and maybe
- 5:39Speaker 1: so again today about the system is the system. that
- 5:44Speaker 1: you're going to see Jeff Lebby run. Now, how up-tempo
- 5:47Speaker 1: remains to be seen, I think. And they still have
- 5:49Speaker 1: Fluff Bothwell back there running back. Yeah, he's a handful.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And Puckett was pretty good against Oklahoma.
- 5:56Speaker 1: His numbers were good.
- 5:57Speaker 2: He looked pretty comfortable. Got the touchdown and two-point conversion
- 6:01Speaker 2: to get him within a score. So it would seem
- 6:03Speaker 2: to me a little bit gamesmanship, and maybe they have
- 6:06Speaker 2: a package for Swan as well.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But it would seem.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Like everything would lead towards Puckett, especially the way he
- 6:13Speaker 2: played last week in relief that he would be the guy.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Yeah, no doubt about it. As Texas will play Mississippi
- 6:20Speaker 1: State on Saturday. Okay, let me jump to the high
- 6:23Speaker 1: school football side of things. And there were a couple
- 6:27Speaker 1: of things that I wanted to get to on this. Well,
- 6:29Speaker 1: actually what it is, it's the same topic. But it's
- 6:33Speaker 1: a couple of different takes or not even different takes,
- 6:38Speaker 1: but just a couple of different statements on the topic.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And what I'm talking about is the announcement that came down.
- 6:46Speaker 1: It was kind of, I don't know if a joint
- 6:48Speaker 1: announcement is the right way to say it because there
- 6:49Speaker 1: were two separate releases that came out. and it was
- 6:54Speaker 1: about the televising of the state championship games for high
- 6:59Speaker 1: school football. And it came out earlier, one announcement, one
- 7:05Speaker 1: statement from the UIL, and then there was one from
- 7:09Speaker 1: Dave Campbell's Texas football. And it was pretty much saying
- 7:14Speaker 1: the same things. But your group, your company is certainly
- 7:19Speaker 1: centrally involved with all of this. And, you know, the
- 7:24Speaker 1: fact that there's going to be both over the air
- 7:29Speaker 1: and streaming options there through your company, through Nexstar, and
- 7:32Speaker 1: Mission Broadcasting will produce the thing. So I wanted to
- 7:36Speaker 1: give you a chance to talk about this because this
- 7:38Speaker 1: is a pretty big deal for those who are really
- 7:40Speaker 1: into the high school football state championships.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well, I got to ask you, going back and putting
- 7:46Speaker 2: you on the spot a little bit, but do you
- 7:48Speaker 2: remember when high school football state championship games were on free,
- 7:52Speaker 2: over-the-air television?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Because I don't. I can tell you. I can tell
- 7:56Speaker 1: you the last time I remember seeing it, and it
- 7:59Speaker 1: was the year before I was on it, it was 1991.
- 8:04Speaker 1: I remember watching a game between Killeen and Fort Bend
- 8:08Speaker 1: Dulles playing in the Astrodome. But all it was, Roger,
- 8:13Speaker 1: was one game, the 5A game at the time. And
- 8:17Speaker 1: to be fair, the first few years that I was involved,
- 8:19Speaker 1: starting the next year, 1992, all we did were the
- 8:22Speaker 1: two 5A games, Division I and Division II, for a while.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And then they added the other games and then ultimately
- 8:29Speaker 1: it grew. So in other words, to your point, it's
- 8:31Speaker 1: been a long time since every game was was available
- 8:35Speaker 1: on over-the-air linear television.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that's, to me, the key. And the ones that aren't,
- 8:41Speaker 2: and I know Victory Plus was a free app, so
- 8:44Speaker 2: that was a big move to make it accessible to
- 8:47Speaker 2: everybody without a paywall. But all the streaming games will
- 8:52Speaker 2: be through different markets and their particular website, but it
- 8:56Speaker 2: will be free as well. So every way you can watch.
- 9:00Speaker 2: And in Austin, we're going to have either KBVO. or KXAN,
- 9:04Speaker 2: we're going to have over the air. And I think
- 9:06Speaker 2: the CW in Dallas, the CW in Houston. And then,
- 9:09Speaker 2: you know, the other markets, they might, if their team
- 9:12Speaker 2: is in it, if they have a local team, maybe
- 9:14Speaker 2: they switch from, you know, streaming.
- 9:17Speaker 1: To over the air.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I think they have that flexibility, all the Nexstar broadcasting stations.
- 9:22Speaker 2: So yeah, it's pretty cool. And, you know, I said
- 9:25Speaker 2: this about what we do on Thursdays is it's unique
- 9:28Speaker 2: to be part of something that that nobody does or
- 9:30Speaker 2: has done. And that's why, you know, we're so proud
- 9:33Speaker 2: of our high school package on Thursday nights, because it's
- 9:36Speaker 2: something that nobody, nobody really does on a local level
- 9:39Speaker 2: in Austin, at least since I've been here, you know,
- 9:42Speaker 2: since 95. And now, you know, this is another thing where,
- 9:45Speaker 2: you know, it's a big, a big deal for, for
- 9:48Speaker 2: Nexstar to go out on a limb and acquire this.
- 9:51Speaker 2: And we're the distributors, we're not the producers of it.
- 9:54Speaker 2: So that's what, you know, you can talk more to that.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And I know you're, hopefully going to be a big
- 9:59Speaker 2: part of it as well.
- 10:00Speaker 1: But, but yeah, I think.
- 10:01Speaker 2: It's pretty cool to, to kind of be, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: doing things and trying things that, that, that are new.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, to Roger's point here in the Austin
- 10:12Speaker 1: area market, the games will be either on KBVO, KXN
- 10:16Speaker 1: or KXN plus and, In the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, KDAF,
- 10:20Speaker 1: that's Channel 33, or their streaming entity, CW33 +. KTSM
- 10:27Speaker 1: Plus in El Paso, KCIT, KAMR, and KAMR Plus in Amarillo,
- 10:33Speaker 1: KRBC and KTAB Plus, Abilene Sweetwater, KSAN and KLST Plus
- 10:40Speaker 1: in San Angelo, KYLE and Fox 44 Plus in the
- 10:43Speaker 1: Super Centex, Waco, Temple, Bryan, KJBO, KFDX Plus, Wichita Falls,
- 10:49Speaker 1: KTPN and KETK Plus in Tyler Longview, and KAMC and
- 10:54Speaker 1: EL Plus in Lubbock, KMID and Big Two Plus in Midland, Odessa,
- 11:00Speaker 1: KGBT and Valley Central Plus, Harlingen and Brownsville. In other words,
- 11:04Speaker 1: wherever you are in the state of Texas, you'll be
- 11:05Speaker 1: able to get it somewhere, which until last year with
- 11:08Speaker 1: Victory Plus wasn't even a possibility. I think the last
- 11:11Speaker 1: year when it was before Victory Plus. The last year
- 11:18Speaker 1: when it was on FanDuel, it was only available in
- 11:21Speaker 1: like 23% of the markets or 23% of the state.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So that's a good thing. And then, yeah, it'll be
- 11:27Speaker 1: produced by the mission group, and we'll see how that is.
- 11:31Speaker 1: And it's a television broadcast company. It's been around for
- 11:35Speaker 1: 30 years. And so they acquire, develop, and operate television stations,
- 11:39Speaker 1: interactive community, websites, there's that. And then the production company
- 11:44Speaker 1: that will put it together also will be Game Time Production.
- 11:48Speaker 1: So we're looking forward to that, which leads me into
- 11:51Speaker 1: your games this weekend, because it's another busy weekend for
- 11:54Speaker 1: you and for all the product that'll be streaming through
- 11:56Speaker 1: KXAM Plus as well, right? Yeah, no doubt.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And sometimes you get the benefit of a Thursday night schedule.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Other times you work with what's there. And so tonight,
- 12:08Speaker 2: there are no playoff implications on the line. But it's interesting.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Conley and Shoemaker are going to play out at the field.
- 12:16Speaker 2: And talking to Conley, Coach Charles Burton and his crew
- 12:18Speaker 2: got moved to D1. They were a playoff team last year.
- 12:21Speaker 2: It's been a bit of a struggle. They do have
- 12:22Speaker 2: a pretty dynamic quarterback. But This is where you go, okay,
- 12:26Speaker 2: what's in it for these kids? It's week 10 out
- 12:28Speaker 2: of an 11-week season, and you haven't had enough success
- 12:32Speaker 2: to be in the playoff picture, but you go to
- 12:34Speaker 2: work every morning and practice. And so that's kind of
- 12:39Speaker 2: what he is really proud of his team because they
- 12:42Speaker 2: keep going to work every day. realizing that it will
- 12:45Speaker 2: come to an end next weekend, their final week. So,
- 12:48Speaker 2: you know, we'll be out at the field. Hopefully the
- 12:50Speaker 2: weather will stay dry. But tomorrow night, Craig, as you know,
- 12:53Speaker 2: a couple of really big ones on KXAN +. Westlake,
- 12:57Speaker 2: Cedar Ridge. Cedar Ridge and Westlake both undefeated in the district.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And then Keith and I will be out at Dragon Stadium,
- 13:03Speaker 2: Round Rock. And Lake Travis, basically for the number one
- 13:07Speaker 2: D1 seed in that district, which means a home game
- 13:11Speaker 2: and kind of affects the matchups.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it does, because, I mean, it might seem unfathomable.
- 13:16Speaker 1: I'm getting ready to do my inconceivable segment. It might
- 13:18Speaker 1: be seeming inconceivable some that Lake Travis could mathematically wind
- 13:23Speaker 1: up in fourth place in the district. Now, they'd be
- 13:25Speaker 1: the runner up in the D1 bracket. But still, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: with all the ups and downs that Hank Carter's team
- 13:31Speaker 1: has had this year, not to mention injuries and things
- 13:34Speaker 1: like that. It's been tough for them, but here they
- 13:37Speaker 1: are with it on their plate to be the top
- 13:39Speaker 1: seed if they can find a way to win that
- 13:41Speaker 1: game against a Round Rock team. Those look really, really
- 13:43Speaker 1: good at times. Westlake has a way of making good
- 13:46Speaker 1: teams look not good, but that looks like it's going
- 13:49Speaker 1: to be a great matchup for you at Dragon Stadium.
- 13:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and they've been regular playoff opponents, so they're in
- 13:56Speaker 2: the same district, but it's like they've been playing each
- 13:59Speaker 2: other every year for a few years now in postseason.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And yeah, Round Rock went into Westlake a few weeks
- 14:05Speaker 2: ago with high hopes on that Thursday night, and it
- 14:08Speaker 2: was a lot of rain, and they had three games.
- 14:12Speaker 2: quick turnovers and that, you know, pretty much that was that.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So I'm sure Cody Moore, the head coach at Brown
- 14:18Speaker 2: Rock would like a chance to, you know, acquit themselves
- 14:21Speaker 2: against another, you know, powerhouse logo and name and all
- 14:25Speaker 2: that with LT. And then, oh, by the way, they
- 14:27Speaker 2: got to see the Ridge next week to close it out.
- 14:30Speaker 1: No doubt about it. catch those uh games kbvo tonight
- 14:34Speaker 1: kxm plus tomorrow night as well all right final question
- 14:37Speaker 1: here uh at your house this weekend especially on saturday
- 14:40Speaker 1: i know you'll be with me for the game but
- 14:41Speaker 1: even before or afterwards is that is that buffett song
- 14:45Speaker 1: going to be played what was the other one jake
- 14:46Speaker 1: that you pulled up as a possibility for today there
- 14:48Speaker 1: was another one is vampires mummies and something vampires and
- 14:53Speaker 1: the holy ghost as a lot of that one's a
- 14:55Speaker 1: little more well known.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I will say this. If I'm not around, my lovely
- 15:00Speaker 2: wife will support me with my Buffett-dom, but she will
- 15:04Speaker 2: not take it upon herself to engage. So it will,
- 15:10Speaker 2: if anything, she'll find some scary sounds. But she likes
- 15:14Speaker 2: to keep it fun for the little ones. So she's
- 15:16Speaker 2: not one of those that wants to scare anybody.
- 15:18Speaker 1: That's a good point.
- 15:18Speaker 2: She likes to sit out there and, you know, be
- 15:22Speaker 2: that supportive, cute, grab what you can.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go. Let somebody else scare you. Yeah,
- 15:29Speaker 1: there you go. Hey, I appreciate the time. Thanks. Have
- 15:32Speaker 1: a good call tonight, and we'll see you this weekend. Thanks, Craig.
- 15:35Speaker 1: Take care. All right. That's Roger Wallace, sports director at KXAN,
- 15:39Speaker 1: and again, my broadcast partner. So his group with Nextar
- 15:43Speaker 1: Media and Mission Broadcasting distributing the state championship games. We'll
- 15:47Speaker 1: find out more about the production side of that coming up,
- 15:50Speaker 1: but it's good to know you're going to be able
- 15:51Speaker 1: to watch those state championship games, you know, on over-the-air,
- 15:55Speaker 1: linear television, television for free and or possibly also the
- 16:01Speaker 1: streaming option for you as well. Up next, Inconceivable on
- 16:05Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone on the iHeartRadio app.
