- 1:14What did we think of Supergirl?
- 1:16What do we think of X Men 97 Season 2?
- 1:19Where are DC and Marvel headed right now?
- 1:22We are systematic ecology.
- 1:24We are the priest of the geeks.
- 1:25And we're going to be talking about all this and more on today's episode of what's News, where we talk about all the latest things in geek culture.
- 1:33And since we have two very big DC and Marvel topics to discuss, we're going to focus on those.
- 1:37But we'll also hit on some other geek stuff as well.
- 1:40And very excited to be here.
- 1:43Am one of your hosts, Kevin Schaefer, here with fellow geekologists Evan Garcia and Christian Ashley.
- 1:48Guys, how are you doing today?
- 1:50Fantastic, man.
- 1:51It really is.
- 1:53It's relaxing.
- 1:54And, yeah, I'm good to be here.
- 1:56And Evan, this is exciting.
- 1:57Before we get to our usual stuff, I want to say because this was exciting.
- 2:01So two weeks ago, we got to finally meet up in person.
- 2:04That was two weeks ago already.
- 2:05Wow.
- 2:05Yeah.
- 2:06And that's actually when we saw Supergirl.
- 2:09I was in Orlando for a disability conference recently that I go to every year, and.
- 2:14And it was perfect timing.
- 2:15So Evan and I got to hang out in Disney Springs.
- 2:18And Evan, before we start with the.
- 2:21We have to tell this story.
- 2:22Can we, like, do you want to hit on.
- 2:24So we're having lunch, right?
- 2:26Yeah.
- 2:26Chicken guy.
- 2:27Yeah.
- 2:27Yes.
- 2:28Yes.
- 2:28We're eating chicken.
- 2:29And, you know, we're talking geek stuff and we're talking like, I think Evan, the question you asked was related to, like, ownership of a work.
- 2:38Like, if a creator puts out a work and, you know, is it okay for fans to feel some ownership of that or should be tired of the creators?
- 2:47That was the question you asked.
- 2:48You want to talk about what happened next?
- 2:49Because this was so cool.
- 2:50Yeah, so.
- 2:51So we were going, we were doing our back and forth about it, and at the table over this, this, this, this, this, this, this young woman says, hey, excuse me, can I, can I jump in on this conversation?
- 3:07And we were like, yeah, sure.
- 3:10So she came over and she.
- 3:11I gave her.
- 3:12And she.
- 3:13I gave her take on it.
- 3:14And it turns out that she.
- 3:16That she does some art on the side and she's in the Disney College program, so she's having a full Disney experience now at the Disney College program.
- 3:27And, and she.
- 3:29And we shared her details online.
- 3:32And.
- 3:32And she started following us.
- 3:34We.
- 3:34Oh, we.
- 3:35Oh, we.
- 3:35Oh, we started following her and then we just had this really cool conversation that was as if we were creating a show together, you know, so they're in the middle of a guy for Aries chicken guy restaurant.
- 3:51It was.
- 3:51It was just such a cool moment.
- 3:53I like.
- 3:54I love those.
- 3:54And Evan was repping us with his Systematic Ecology T shirt.
- 3:58It was just such.
- 3:59It was such a cool experience.
- 4:00So I want to give a shout out to that person who met with us.
- 4:05Like, I really appreciate you stopping by, and that's really why we do what we do.
- 4:08I mean, we, you know, we love having geek conversations.
- 4:10We love getting deeper on this stuff.
- 4:12And so that was just a really cool, kind of surreal meetup, you know?
- 4:17So, yeah, we had to share that on the podcast, but I thought that would be it.
- 4:23Yeah, that was.
- 4:24And it was such a blast hanging out.
- 4:26I'm so glad we got to make it work.
- 4:28It was a great time.
- 4:29So it was cool to hang out.
- 4:32With someone that understood my, my, my, my, my two great references.
- 4:41Yes.
- 4:41Yes.
- 4:42Oh, yes, absolutely.
- 4:43Oh, we had.
- 4:44We had a lot of, like, references and sharing.
- 4:47So, yeah, I mean, and one.
- 4:48One day we'll get all three of us in the same room because that's what like, Christian, I've met you in person.
- 4:53I would know.
- 4:54I met you in person.
- 4:54So we gotta make it happen.
- 4:56One of our birthdays has to be.
- 4:57Yes, yes, we'll make it happen.
- 5:00But, yeah, so awesome.
- 5:01Well, I had to share that story because I.
- 5:04That's really, you know, ties into what we do here at Systematic Ecology.
- 5:07And our.
- 5:07If you are new to the show, thank you so much for joining us.
- 5:11Whether you're here on YouTube or you're listening to this later, we really appreciate you.
- 5:15And hey, if you like what you hear or see today, give us a review wherever you get your podcast rate and review us.
- 5:23If you give us a like on YouTube.
- 5:25If we get up to 50 likes.
- 5:27I think the challenge right now is that Will Rose, one of our fellow geekologists who is on sabbatical right now, maybe he'll dress up as Crypto.
- 5:36I'm going to say that as the next.
- 5:39I just saw that they're making a.
- 5:43A real Rod of the Hut from the movie.
- 5:46That's right.
- 5:47Inflatable costume.
- 5:48But it's a weird one because you can still see the person's legs through the suit.
- 5:54So it's like, it's weird.
- 5:56That makes it even more hilarious.
- 5:58And I.
- 5:59I have no doubt Will is going to wholeheartedly volunteer to wear that.
- 6:03So if you think that's, you know, who goes surfing with it, it would be amazing.
- 6:08And if you think that's a great idea, then, hey, hit that like button.
- 6:11We really appreciate it.
- 6:13And you can also find ways to support our show by clicking on the links here.
- 6:18Support us on fourth wall.
- 6:19And if you want to be a supporter of the show, you can get a shout out and we want to.
- 6:25I want to shout out a couple of our supporters today.
- 6:28Aaron Hardy, Amber Riley, Justin Vaughn.
- 6:31I know we're all usually only do one, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna do a triple A supporter shout out today.
- 6:37Yeah, we really appreciate you all.
- 6:39Thank you so much.
- 6:40And you know, and again, you can click on the link, find out ways to support us, get free, get merchandise, all of the good stuff there.
- 6:48So.
- 6:49So, yeah, thank you for being here.
- 6:50And you know, we are going to talk about Supergirl, we're talking about X Men 97.
- 6:54But before we get into our main topics, let us do our regular lightning round where we.
- 7:01Where we give us an a quick shout out to some of the other things we're geeking out on.
- 7:05So, Christian, we'll start with you.
- 7:06What is your lightning round pick for today?
- 7:09Yeah, my Adventures with Superman is.
- 7:11I think the last episode just aired last night.
- 7:13I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I'm really enjoying this season.
- 7:16Introducing John Kent and some new machinations on that end with Lex and everything and Hank Henshaw as our cyborg.
- 7:24Superman could be the eradicator coming up.
- 7:26Who knows?
- 7:26It's been a lot of good fun.
- 7:28Cool.
- 7:28I love that show.
- 7:29I know I've talked about it before and.
- 7:32Yeah.
- 7:33And they're also coming out with my adventures with Green Lantern, I think later.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:41In one of the recent episodes.
- 7:42Yes.
- 7:43So very excited for that.
- 7:44Yes.
- 7:45Great pick there.
- 7:46Evan, what about you?
- 7:48I just started, I just started that series.
- 7:52I'm like five, six episodes in now and I'm really digging it.
- 7:56Yeah.
- 7:56Yeah.
- 7:57And I'm also watching.
- 7:59We are all as a family, we're all caught up on, on all the Spider man films.
- 8:06So we've been catching up on that for the, For a brand new day that I saw the Bear, the season finale for that.
- 8:15That.
- 8:16That was.
- 8:17I'm still processing it.
- 8:18It's so, it's so it's.
- 8:21It's one of those shows.
- 8:22I'm like, I'm glad I'm alive to experience this show.
- 8:26So good stuff.
- 8:27I.
- 8:27It's on my list.
- 8:28I actually saw because I know I haven't watched the Bear yet.
- 8:32I saw this, like there's this Pete Holmes a bit about like, he's like, yeah.
- 8:37Oh, he was like you know, if you don't watch the bear, the people who do judge you for it.
- 8:42And he was just like, I get.
- 8:44I'm a parent.
- 8:45I get one hour to myself every day.
- 8:47I would rather spend it watching the Office for the 45th time, then stress myself out watching the Bear.
- 8:53I know, it's great.
- 8:54And I.
- 8:55He's like, yeah, but.
- 8:56Yeah, so that's kind of where I'm at, too.
- 8:58I need to be in the right mood to really absorb that, like the.
- 9:03New the Wire or Breaking Bad or what have you.
- 9:05Like, in terms of, like, everyone else.
- 9:08Is talking about it.
- 9:10That's a fair comparison.
- 9:11Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:12And I mean.
- 9:14And I mean, I.
- 9:15Heck, I was like, when Breaking Bad was coming out, I was reviewing the final season when I was back in college.
- 9:20And yeah, I probably fell into that camp, too.
- 9:22But yes, and.
- 9:25And that's ironic because.
- 9:27Because that Pete Holmes clip, I saw that too, and I found it ironic because that's how I am with.
- 9:34On his show.
- 9:35With.
- 9:36With his HBO show crashing.
- 9:39It's so I couldn't watch it because it was.
- 9:43It took me like three years to finally get in a spot in my deconstruction where.
- 9:49Where.
- 9:50Where I could watch it.
- 9:51But once I watched it, like, it was everything to me.
- 9:54It was everything.
- 9:55Like.
- 9:56Like, if you deconstructed from your evangelical Christianity from that, like the mid-90s to early 2000s, like, that's the show for you, man.
- 10:07Like, that's wild.
- 10:09He just unnamed it.
- 10:10Just completely nailed it.
- 10:11But yeah, yeah, good recommendation.
- 10:13I need to check out because I've seen Pete Holmes live before, but I haven't watched the show.
- 10:17I have yet to see him live.
- 10:19Yeah, he's pretty great.
- 10:20Yeah.
- 10:20Yeah, awesome.
- 10:21Also, I see Will Rose is here.
- 10:24We were just talking about you, Rada the Hut himself, but awesome.
- 10:29And then.
- 10:30Great picks, guys.
- 10:31My lightning round pick is.
- 10:32I know I've talked about on the podcast before, and I was actually kind of worried it was canceled because I hadn't seen in a while.
- 10:37But the DC Studios showcase podcast, which is.
- 10:41It airs on HBO Max, and then you can get it on YouTube and Spotify as well.
- 10:45But, like, it was.
- 10:46They were releasing all throughout last year, building up a Superman and then throughout the year.
- 10:50And I mean, I knew they were going on break, but.
- 10:53But it had been a while and I was wondering when it was going to come back.
- 10:57So now they're back in full swing.
- 10:59They've released four new episodes of the new season and they interviewed Millie Alcock and Greg Gillespie Jason Momoa and then just recently, Kevin Smith.
- 11:09So, of course, that was an hour episode, you know, longer than the others.
- 11:14You can't.
- 11:14You can't.
- 11:15Kevin Smith, Transcopan himself.
- 11:16You can't have Kev on there for a short one.
- 11:19But.
- 11:19But I love that show.
- 11:20It's just a delightful.
- 11:22I would.
- 11:22I would say similar to ours in that, like, it just really highlights the.
- 11:26The joy of being into geek culture when there are a lot of, you know, like, more toxic online spaces.
- 11:35It's a nice, like, counterbalance to that.
- 11:37So really love that show again.
- 11:39You can get it on all those platforms, so.
- 11:41Awesome.
- 11:42Well, guys, I know we've got some big topics to talk about today, so let's get to it.
- 11:48We'll talk first about Supergirl.
- 11:50So leading right in there with the.
- 11:53With dc.
- 11:54So, yeah, as I mentioned earlier, Evan and I got to see this when we were met up in person.
- 11:59It was kind of fun.
- 12:00We saw a Supergirl Warner Brothers movie right in the heart of Disney.
- 12:04But, you know, I mean, Spider man wasn't playing then, so, you know, but it was great.
- 12:09We got to see it at the big AMC theater.
- 12:12Great spot.
- 12:13The AMC theater right there in Disney Springs.
- 12:16Nice and loud and bright.
- 12:18Oh, it was.
- 12:19It was so really good.
- 12:20Popcorn.
- 12:21Yes.
- 12:21Oh, and just like.
- 12:22And perfect seating.
- 12:25Yeah, that was a good time.
- 12:27So, yeah, and Evan and I actually, we did a quick, like, coming out of the theater reaction, sharing our thoughts.
- 12:34We put it on our social media channels for systematic ecology.
- 12:38So, actually, Christian, I want to hear what your initial thoughts were first, because mine have changed a little bit too.
- 12:43Like, like, I.
- 12:44I came out of the movie really enjoying it.
- 12:46I'd say.
- 12:46I've, you know, I still have, like, issues with it, but I.
- 12:49But it's kind of like, right in the middle for me.
- 12:51If, like, I liked it overall, but I do have, like, issues with mainly editing and pacing.
- 12:56But, Chris, but I have not heard your thoughts at all.
- 12:58So I want to hear yours first and then we can kind of go around and then we'll get a little deeper after.
- 13:03My issues are more with changing and nerfing her.
- 13:06Overall, I did enjoy the film.
- 13:10It is a huge step down from Superman.
- 13:13I think she works great as Supergirl.
- 13:15Yeah, they do a little too much of the drunken antics, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:18That's part of the original comic.
- 13:20But it also feels like they didn't read it because they changed the things I'm not particularly happy about because they kind of kill the message of what that was trying to do.
- 13:29And also remove some of the more fantastical elements.
- 13:32That Gun can do it.
- 13:33Why can't the rest of the directors do the same?
- 13:36Like, as someone who would definitely approve of that being there, I'm kind of curious why they're not there, whether they just wanted to be more gritty, which we already had.
- 13:44Snyderverse.
- 13:45We don't need that.
- 13:45Again, I don't know.
- 13:46But once again, I think Millie Alcock.
- 13:51Millie.
- 13:51Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:52It's right in front of my face on the screen that I should be reading.
- 13:54Yes.
- 13:55She did a wonderful job.
- 13:57Jason Momoa was terrific as Lobo.
- 13:59It's kind of like, obviously, that's who he should have been from birth, like, playing this role.
- 14:05The others, they exist.
- 14:07It's fair.
- 14:07I mean, I, like, I, I, I would echo a lot of those thoughts, honestly, because, again, I came out of the movie like, really enjoying it.
- 14:13And I think part of that was through the experience.
- 14:15Like, we were having a great day there.
- 14:16I was coming out behind the conference, so, like, I.
- 14:19I honestly wasn't thinking too much from a critical lens coming out of it, and I did so.
- 14:23And, like, I.
- 14:24And Evan.
- 14:25And I had the experience of.
- 14:26Evan had not read the comic before.
- 14:28I'm a big fan of it.
- 14:30And so I was, you know, I thought the, like, I came out of it like, yeah, there were definitely changes there, but I thought it would, you know, it's cool to see that they were basing it directly off,
- 14:42like, one comic instead of, like, an amalgamation of things.
- 14:46Like, this was very much, like, based on Woman of Tomorrow.
- 14:50Like, I compared it to.
- 14:51In the same way, the Winter Soldier movie is very much based on the Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting run of Captain America.
- 14:59That said, like you said, Christian, this does change major things in the comic, which, I mean, I.
- 15:05I wasn't expecting a direct adaptation.
- 15:08I would say, for me, though, you know, reflecting on the movie and again saying, like, I, you know, I liked it fine.
- 15:14I didn't, you know, hate it or really love it.
- 15:16I agree that it was a big step down from Superman, because people on this podcast especially know how much I love that movie.
- 15:23But, you know, the big thing was some of.
- 15:27I usually try not to go into a movie with too many expectations, but this was one where, like, James Gunn was saying, this is, like, one of the best scripts he's ever read.
- 15:36And it was just, like, building it up so much.
- 15:39And so I did have really high expectations going in because they were building this up.
- 15:43It's based on a great comic, so I know.
- 15:46I like, I would kind of put it at middle of the road, like, entertaining superhero movie, but, you know, not like, oh my gosh, amazing.
- 15:56Evan, what about you?
- 15:56Like, I know I got your thoughts, like, coming out of the theater, but have that.
- 16:01Has that changed at all in the.
- 16:02Two weeks since it's been more fleshed out?
- 16:06It hasn't changed.
- 16:07Like, I still.
- 16:09I still like what I liked about it, and I still so don't like what I don't like about it.
- 16:14But there's some things that come to mind.
- 16:17Our friends over at a Popcorn Theology, you can find them on Instagram and all that, but they're.
- 16:25They're.
- 16:25They are friends of the show.
- 16:27They did a.
- 16:28They did a part of their show and they talked about what good looks like in the Superman movie and how.
- 16:36And how that looks like in this movie.
- 16:38And they did a great comparison on.
- 16:40On the.
- 16:42On the cynicism and the process of.
- 16:45Of.
- 16:45Of.
- 16:46Of trying to become good in that sense and how.
- 16:50And how the different movies show that.
- 16:54And so I thought that was pretty cool.
- 16:57But yeah, the.
- 16:59The pacing still stands out to me.
- 17:01Like, it's.
- 17:02That.
- 17:02It's that cliche of like, it's.
- 17:05It's really slow in the middle type of thing.
- 17:07It's like, yep, that.
- 17:08That kind of applies to this movie still, but.
- 17:11But this was one of those movies where I could.
- 17:14My wife really liked it too.
- 17:16She's not.
- 17:17She.
- 17:18She has experience with it as much as that she likes to see the CW ver.
- 17:25And she liked this one enough where we.
- 17:28Where we could talk about the differences on it.
- 17:31So it's always good that I can kind of honor that with my wife like that too.
- 17:35So.
- 17:36But yeah, I do love that.
- 17:37And, you know, I mean, and that's cool too, because I was also a fan of the CW series.
- 17:43Actually, I have a poster of that on the wall over there behind me.
- 17:47But.
- 17:47And obviously this is a very different version.
- 17:49And, you know, in the.
- 17:51The comic, you know, was very much moving the character in a different direction of.
- 17:55You know, Tom King has said, like, in interviews, you know, Kara is someone who watched her planet die.
- 18:02And, you know, and not only that, but she really saw her people destroyed twice because she saw Argo City destroyed as well.
- 18:10And so she carries much more trauma than Superman because Superman didn't really witness any of that.
- 18:15I mean, he still wrestles with the identity crisis, but he also had a very safe, you know, upbringing.
- 18:23And, you know, I like that, you know, that somewhat.
- 18:27So much of what I love about the comic is that it really explores that and it's a really grounded portrayal.
- 18:34Now, one thing.
- 18:35Well, actually so with editing and pacing, because this is something even in reviews you don't typically talk about, but because I think editing is one of the.
- 18:46It's an art form in film that when it's done well, you don't really notice it.
- 18:53Like, that's the good.
- 18:54Like good editing is like it becomes seamless even though there's an incredible amount of work that goes into it.
- 19:01It's.
- 19:01But then when there are editing issues or it's poor, that's when it becomes more noticeable.
- 19:05So for here in this movie, for instance, I think it would have been improved greatly with even just some rearranging of scenes.
- 19:12So I actually, I came out of the theater saying in our little mini review there that one of my favorite scenes was seeing Krypton destroyed in the Origin of Cara play out.
- 19:24Not because I wanted to see people suffer, but.
- 19:27But I just like, I did really like the exploration and how that was done.
- 19:31I think some of that should have been at the beginning of the movie and sprinkled throughout instead of kind of thrown there all at once.
- 19:38Because if you start the movie with stakes of, you know, where.
- 19:42Who Cara is and where she's from instead of just her, like, we.
- 19:47We get the differences between her and Clark right away.
- 19:50But, you know, just starting with a music drop and a drinking scene, I don't think was like the most dramatic way to kick off the film.
- 19:59Because, like, I think about it like Guardians of the Galaxy, for instance.
- 20:02I know again, Gunn did not direct this, but there's still a lot of his identity in the film.
- 20:06But Guardians of the Galaxy, yes, it's an action comedy and Star Lord is, you know, playing music and everything and kind of not take himself too seriously.
- 20:16But this, the movie opens with the death of his mother and it has this really heartfelt emotional connection right there from the get go.
- 20:24And I think this film could have benefited from that right at the beginning.
- 20:28And also, you know, actually, Christian, I wanted to see your thoughts on this.
- 20:31So the comic is from Ruthie's perspective and.
- 20:36And like, and it makes it so well.
- 20:38And I don't think it was necessarily a bad thing to switch it to Supergirls, but.
- 20:43But it all.
- 20:44I do think Ruthie was way more underwritten in the movie and I like.
- 20:48And there were, you know, it suffered from that.
- 20:51But I.
- 20:52I'm just curious, having read the comic, do you think it would have been better to still maintain Ruthie's POV for the movie, or do you think it worked to have Supergirl in the front and center?
- 21:03Well, shout out real quick to Will Rose, because last time I was at his place is when I read this graphic novel for the first time.
- 21:09Well collected paperback and really enjoyed it.
- 21:13But, yeah, it is written primarily from her point of view.
- 21:16And you know what that would have done, made her a character in the film, more than likely.
- 21:22Ruthie.
- 21:23Everything happens around her.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:25At the start, it's like, yeah, I need to go out and do stuff.
- 21:27But then after she teams up with Supergirl, it's like, why do you even bother existing?
- 21:32I.
- 21:32It.
- 21:33It's really frustrating seeing the differences and wanting better because, yeah, the whole thing at the very end there.
- 21:40And yeah, we're going to talk spoilers, by the way.
- 21:43I should have said that at the beginning.
- 21:44But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:46You know, the whole thing is like journeying together.
- 21:48The quest for revenge, you know, you killed my father.
- 21:52Which is.
- 21:53They also do it differently.
- 21:54And, like, everyone's killed off in the movie versus, I think just her dad in the comic.
- 21:58I can't remember every.
- 22:00It's been a minute, but yes, I think, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:02Okay.
- 22:03Her father, she's out for Ren for.
- 22:05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 22:06They also change Crim and his bad guys.
- 22:08And instead of being like this gang, they're almost like a race that goes beyond what they do in the comic.
- 22:14Yeah.
- 22:15And, yeah, Vikings.
- 22:16And.
- 22:17And even though they're like a bunch of murderous Vikings, they also have to make them sex slavers, too, which is something that wasn't in there.
- 22:25It's like I was trying to figure out why did that need to change.
- 22:28He's already a bad guy.
- 22:29We already hate him from the beginning.
- 22:30You don't need to make him worse.
- 22:33Yeah.
- 22:33But then you get to the very end, this whole climax supposed to be, do you seek revenge, the guy who killed your father or not?
- 22:39You know, she decides not to.
- 22:41Supergirl decides not to.
- 22:42We get to the film instead.
- 22:44The same at the initially, same thing, but then Kara goes and kills him instead.
- 22:49And I'm not against certain heroes killing villains off.
- 22:52You know, Superman had his moment before Zod.
- 22:55You know, it was, I either kill Zod or.
- 22:58Or he kills me and kills everyone I ever love.
- 23:01Versus, well, I beat him up, I beaten up his gang.
- 23:05He can kind of live.
- 23:06Yeah, he'll still be a terrible person, but, like, I don't know what passes for Spacekill here.
- 23:10Where the lanterns at?
- 23:11I can throw them their way.
- 23:13Like, instead, she.
- 23:14She murders him, and that's not Supergirl.
- 24:17And also, it would.
- 24:18Like, Evan, I was telling you this too.
- 24:20The comic spans decades.
- 24:23Like, I mean, great.
- 24:23I mean, the actual time of the main story is fairly short.
- 24:27They make it shorter here, but.
- 24:29But they do a big time jump in the comic at the end, and they make the ending a little more ambiguous, too.
- 24:35It.
- 24:36I actually think it lends itself to multiple interpretations what happens in the last few panels.
- 24:42But.
- 24:43But.
- 24:43Yeah, but.
- 24:44But in that case, it's like, okay, they.
- 24:48You see Krem imprisoned for a long time, and then Kara and Ruthie reunite as older beings.
- 24:57And so, like, there are, you know, and you go on this, like, whirlwind of an emotional journey there.
- 25:02But, yeah, here it was just like.
- 25:05I mean, on the one hand, like, yes, clearly, Crim has no redemption arc at all because, like, okay, he's just debated.
- 25:13He's still a murderous scumbag.
- 25:16So I get it.
- 25:17And also, it's kind of the Wild west, but I agree.
- 25:20It's like, I'm not sure what they were trying to go for there in terms of Kara's development, you know, by killing him and what that did.
- 25:31I'm glad that, you know, she saved Ruthie from that fate, but by putting it on her own.
- 25:37Yeah, I'm still kind of mixed on that.
- 25:39Like, I.
- 25:41Yeah, I've come around to.
- 25:43It because, yeah, I thought of it as just like you said.
- 25:48Like, I don't have the context of the previous lore, but I saw it as kind of a weak, just, you know, good guy defeats bad guy.
- 25:57But then I thought about it, and I looked at some other opinions, and I kind of.
- 26:04I kind of like the idea that Creme was the way she could stop grieving about her planet because she couldn't.
- 26:12Ah, interesting.
- 26:13Because for her.
- 26:16What's the little girl's name?
- 26:18Ruthie.
- 26:19Ruthie.
- 26:20For her, Creme was her closure for her family.
- 26:24And Cara didn't want.
- 26:27It's the irony of, like, yeah, you.
- 26:31You are.
- 26:31You are gonna kill your.
- 26:34Your oppressor, but will that ever really satisfy you?
- 26:37Type of thing.
- 26:38And then.
- 26:39And then Ankaro, well, was able to be that for.
- 26:44For a Ruthie, but she was able to take the death of Krem as her closure.
- 26:51So it's kind of a.
- 26:54A.
- 26:54A reversal of what she taught Ruthie, but it was still closure for.
- 27:00For.
- 27:02For the both of them, and I found that kind of powerful.
- 27:07What do you guys.
- 27:08What's your guys's take on the music choice for that Final battle there.
- 27:14The, the, the rope.
- 27:17The rope drop.
- 27:18The needle drop.
- 27:18The needle drop.
- 27:19The COVID of the middle.
- 27:21Yeah.
- 27:21By Jimmy.
- 27:22We're all like, this is one where I liked that cover.
- 27:27Do I think this is why.
- 27:28Okay, this kind of ties into a larger point about and I've been watching videos on this of because it, and, and there's been, there's a Hollywood Reporter article that came out about a week ago saying that like there
- 27:42were.
- 27:43Even though James Gunn was like praising this movie in the last year and all that like apparently there was a lot of behind the scenes drama and disputes over him and Craig Gillespie.
- 27:54I don't know how much of that is true.
- 27:56There were still some unnamed sources here.
- 27:57But I just bring that up because this definitely felt like some studio meddling because there was apparently a studio cut they showed and a Gillespie cut to audiences though apparently both of them had a needle drop in there.
- 28:11But I again I bring this up because this just feels like a little too James Gunn esque and not different enough because again this for this being more of a space opera than a digital superhero movie.
- 28:24And also Superman did a really good job of not of being more score driven and more costumes other than the I, I it was, and it was a good placement with the song during the Mr.
- 28:36Terrific scene and then punk rocker at the end.
- 28:39But, but I like that it avoided that the typical needle drops for the most part.
- 28:43This one like again, good song.
- 28:46But it also I, it was, it felt a little just like do we really need this in middle Another big slow mo fight with the big needle drop.
- 28:57I don't know.
- 28:58I, I, I, I wanted something.
- 29:00I, I think a score or something like that would have been better there.
- 29:04That's my personal feeling.
- 29:06But I did like the song itself.
- 29:08Yeah.
- 29:09Unless John Williams was behind the orchestral score, I don't remember any music from movies for the most part.
- 29:16There was some part of it.
- 29:17Yeah, I, I remember the scene but I, I'm struggling to remember how the music was played there.
- 29:23It's, that's not my grandfather memories.
- 29:25Like the Middle by Jimmy World is classic millennial anthem and this was like sort of an indie cover of it.
- 29:32But it was another like very soundtrack heavy movie, much like a lot of James Gunn ones, you know.
- 29:38And like, and Cracking Last week has done that too because he directed Cruella and that also has like a sound effect throughout.
- 29:45So I guess they're both similar in that regard.
- 29:47My point is that I think it would have been better to just have, you know, more score, less Needle drops here.
- 29:54I was obsessed with that track, man.
- 29:56I was.
- 29:57Yeah, I think it worked for me so hard.
- 30:00You know, it.
- 30:01Because it spoke to both of the characters in their own way.
- 30:05It's.
- 30:06And.
- 30:06And having a daughter, you know, it's like, don't worry.
- 30:09You are just in the middle of it.
- 30:11And it just spoke to me.
- 30:13And I was like, yeah, I get it that it might be too literal, but I.
- 30:18It.
- 30:18It just worked for me.
- 30:20And it made me.
- 30:22And it made me remember there's a artist I like, Audrey Assad, that she made a version of it too.
- 30:31Good God.
- 30:32I had those two versions on a repeat for, like, the whole week.
- 30:35It's a great song.
- 30:36I mean, again, millennial anthem.
- 30:38I very enjoyed it.
- 30:39And, like, I like the COVID of it, but that's cool that it spoke to you.
- 30:42I mean, and again, it does, like, very much tie into the themes of the movie, but I get it.
- 30:47It's.
- 30:47It's very literal.
- 30:49Yeah, sure, sure.
- 30:51And I had to think, like, a.
- 30:52It depends on how much you want.
- 30:53If you want the, like, kind of, like, right in your face kind of themes.
- 30:57And.
- 30:57Yeah, that's okay.
- 30:58If you're, like, more allergic to that then this, then I can see it being like, oh, God, this is too much.
- 31:05But.
- 31:06But, yeah, so, yeah, I mean, overall, I mean, there were like.
- 31:10There's no parts of the movie I really liked.
- 31:11And overall, like.
- 31:12I mean, I had good time.
- 31:13I would watch it again, but I think it just could have been a lot better.
- 31:18I'll also say too, like, I actually.
- 31:20I wasn't expecting Superman to be in as much.
- 31:24Like, I mean, I.
- 31:24I didn't think it was like, overused or anything, but I really did like the scene of how they met for the first time.
- 31:30Not that it was like, you know, his movie or anything like that, but I just thought that that worked really well.
- 31:35Which is again, why I wanted more of her origin spread throughout the movie instead of being kind of one montage kind of sprinkled in there in the middle.
- 31:45But I did.
- 31:46I did like that scene a lot.
- 31:48Yeah, the.
- 31:49I'm trying not to hold it against it, but I was kind of disappointed when the end where Kara says that she's gonna live with him and.
- 31:59And she's, you know, she's.
- 32:01She's changed her ways and finally accepted and processed all her grief and everything.
- 32:07I was expecting Superman Clark to the.
- 32:10To be that kind of, like, giddy, innocent, excited that he was kind of previously, but he kind of took it downstream, you know, it's like, oh, okay.
- 32:20I was expecting something else.
- 32:22No, for sure, for sure.
- 32:23Yeah.
- 32:24Yeah.
- 32:24And then I agree.
- 32:25Sorry, Kevin.
- 32:26Oh, no, go ahead.
- 32:27You're good.
- 32:27Okay.
- 32:28Yeah, I agree with you now that you said it out loud.
- 32:31Like, the flashback scenes on Krypton were great as far as I'm concerned with setting up what could have been good emotional impact later on.
- 32:39But since it was one continuous scene, instead of being interspersed over like this just happened, maybe I could think about this part of, what, my backstory or something like that.
- 32:50Yeah, it gets a little disjointed.
- 32:51And it also confirms the idea that the Kryptonians are the bad guys that came from the last film.
- 32:58I know you're laughing.
- 33:00I was so hoping it was a misdirect this whole time, and it was still Luthor who had managed to trick even one of the smartest people on Earth with his stuff, but apparently that's not true.
- 33:09I still hate that reveal with every fiber of my being outside of a really good film.
- 33:14Yeah, yeah, I'm done.
- 33:16No, it's okay.
- 33:17I mean, like, I, I think he knew that was going to be a controversial, controversial decision, but, but, yeah, I.
- 33:24Haven't seen that, like, brought up in some, in some of my discourse online.
- 33:29Yeah, people have been focusing on other things more, but.
- 33:32But that was what, you know, I also.
- 33:33Oh, did you know that the.
- 33:35The guy who played Bernard in the Santa Claus was Supergirl?
- 33:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:41That was cool.
- 33:41Yeah, yeah.
- 33:42A little, like, millennial Easter egg there, but.
- 33:46And then I know we gotta get into our next topic, but one thing I did want, you know, is that, like, I am sad that the movie did so poorly.
- 33:53It makes me a little concerned about the, the franchise going forward, especially with, like, the Paramount buyout being inevitable.
- 34:02There's a lot of uncertainty.
- 34:04I know we don't have time to get into it right now, but I don't.
- 34:08I, I, But I want to bring that up because I don't think it's all doom and gloom either.
- 34:12Like, I mean, yes, it was a bit of a sophomore slump in terms of reception and box office, but we also have to remember, like, the MCU second movie after Iron man was the Incredible Hulk.
- 34:24So it's not like this is like it's dead, but I, I mean, but I have seen some good commentary on, like, just, like, like, good.
- 34:33Not, like, the toxic kind of fandom, but, like, good ideas of, like, okay, here are my thoughts on what D.C.
- 34:38can do going forward.
- 34:40So.
- 34:40And, And I have lots of my own Too.
- 34:42Like, I, I mean, and ultimately, I.
- 34:44I watched the video earlier basically saying, like, James Gunn kind of needs to decide whether he wants to commit fully to being a studio ad or being a creative and filmmaker, because it is really hard to do both.
- 34:56And, And I mean, I agree with that.
- 34:59As a big James Gunn fan.
- 35:01I agree.
- 35:02I mean, it's really hard to write and direct movies and run a studio.
- 35:06Is he supposed to be directing?
- 35:09He's doing man of Tomorrow, and then.
- 35:11And then Creature Commando Season 2 is next year.
- 35:15So he wrote that.
- 35:17So, yeah, he's.
- 35:18I mean, he's not.
- 35:18Like, this is, like, the only year where he didn't write and direct any of the projects, but.
- 35:24Because, like, this.
- 35:25Lanterns and Clayface, all of other creators.
- 35:28But, but, yeah, man of Tomorrow is next summer, so he's writing and directing, so it's not.
- 35:33But, yeah, but I want to bring that up, though, of, like, yes, it's.
- 35:36It does suck that this one bombed.
- 35:38And, like, you know, it's not being well received.
- 35:40But I also want to, like, you know, that's not doom and gloom for dc.
- 35:45And, like, I, I just, I don't really like it when people, like, proactively go to, oh, it's all over.
- 35:50They're gonna have to reboot again.
- 35:52Calm down.
- 35:53Yeah, Like, I mean, yeah, I made.
- 35:55Memes kind of about this, about, about the box office and, and, like, the person crying and then, and then, and then they were using the song the middle to comfort them because.
- 36:11Because, because we're just in the middle of the ride.
- 36:14Right, right, right.
- 36:15Yeah.
- 36:15And it's, I mean, there.
- 36:17Yeah, we've still got a lot of good stuff look forward to, but I guess if you are worried, then go support the projects.
- 36:22Go see playface when it comes out.
- 36:24Go see, you know, like, man of Tomorrow or, I mean, you.
- 36:27Hey, you guys, Supergirl is still in theaters.
- 36:28Still go see it, you know, before it gets taken out.
- 36:31So, yeah.
- 36:32Awesome.
- 36:33Well, I thank you very much, guys.
- 36:34Now let's get on to.
- 36:35Let's transition to the Marvel Universe.
- 36:39Very exciting project to discuss right now, and that is X Men 97 Season 2.
- 36:45So as of recording right now, the first four episodes have dropped.
- 36:49Are we all caught up on them?
- 36:51Yep.
- 36:51Perfect.
- 36:51Yes.
- 37:52Awesome.
- 37:54So, yeah, I mean, I like, I, I, I really love this show.
- 37:59I, like, I grew up on the original 90s series.
- 38:02I cannot say that I've seen every episode or I don't know if I've ever watched it all in order, but I like, I, I mean, I Maybe I've seen them all at some point, but.
- 38:13But I, I usually go back and re watch like ones here and there on Disney plus, but, but what I really like about X Men 97 is that while it builds on the continuity of the original, you can
- 38:23also watch it never having really watched that show or not, being like a super fan and know every reference.
- 38:31Like it's just really good storytelling.
- 38:33But, but yeah, this.
- 38:35So the first four episodes, so we've got the Rise of Apocalypse arc.
- 38:39We also had an episode centering on the X Force and then the, the opening episode of the season kind of like showcased where kind of each of the characters were following the season one finale where a lot of
- 38:55the heroes are sent back in time and Apocalypse is introduced.
- 38:59All good stuff going on.
- 39:00So.
- 39:01Yeah.
- 39:01Well, I would start off with what do we think of these first four episodes?
- 39:05Evan, we can start with you.
- 39:07Yeah, it was it I had to do.
- 39:10Well, I didn't have to, but I wanted to do a quick like recap of, of, of of season one.
- 39:17So I watched one and that was a good refresher and I think that helped me a little bit because it jumps right in there.
- 39:25There the cable and, and, and, and, and Bishop.
- 39:30They lay down some exposition, but then you're just there.
- 39:34Boom.
- 39:34You, you jump into the story with everyone.
- 39:38No, not, not no Cable and Bishop.
- 39:41Fortune.
- 39:42Bishop.
- 39:43Yeah, they are talking about it and just overall I, it the only.
- 39:50I just liked it so much.
- 39:51These four episodes were just like a really solid film.
- 39:55They were so heavy on their philosophy, on their exposition.
- 40:02They've just character just.
- 40:05They were firing on all cylinders and I just don't like the, the only thing that can summarize my feelings about these is this hyperbolic statement that now I, I kind of, I kind of don't care what the MCQ
- 40:21does with the X Men because we have this now.
- 40:25It's just like, dang, this was so good.
- 40:29I, I, yeah, I don't know.
- 40:31I just like, I actually saw a commentary on that where like these were on screen Crush.
- 40:37They were talking about like what they want to see from the MCU X Men.
- 40:41And one of them was just like, I just want them to just make x men 97 like more, you know, like, I mean, they're like make that live action.
- 40:48I mean they're like, it's just, it really is.
- 40:50It's like, I mean they've set the bar so high here.
- 40:53And that's why I put as if you're on YouTube, you can see my Little like subheading is higher.
- 40:57The X Men 97 writers to do more because this is just brilliant storytelling and to handle this many characters and have not only a million Easter eggs, but also just have a really cohesive story.
- 41:10It's impressive.
- 41:11It's just the juggling act here of.
- 41:13And I'm also not the biggest fan of time travel.
- 41:16I mean, I like a good time travel story when it's done well, but ultimately it can just get too convoluted.
- 41:22And that's why I like, to be honest, I've never.
- 41:25I haven't read a lot.
- 41:25A lot of apocalypse stories.
- 41:27And I don't think the character has been handled well in a lot of media, especially a certain movie.
- 41:32But.
- 41:33But here they made him so interesting and they made him like, you know, this concept of Xavier and Magneto trying to change him because they're like, okay, we've tried to defeat him multiple times.
- 41:46What if, you know, while we're.
- 41:49We're in this timeline where it's before he's become apocalypse, what if we could change him and, you know, a thing to do.
- 41:57Yeah.
- 41:58Magneto taking Xavier stance and try to convince him.
- 42:02That blew my mind.
- 42:04How it was, how.
- 42:05How they're.
- 42:06How they're.
- 42:07A relationship was so tight that he was able to be like, yeah, I.
- 42:11I don't agree with you, but I respect your viewpoint and I see it and I want to change the world with your viewpoint.
- 42:18That means so much.
- 42:19Yeah, it was beautiful.
- 42:21But Christian, what about you?
- 42:23Yeah, I'm in it to win it for this series.
- 42:26They know exactly what they're doing.
- 42:28They're the X Men as a property is one of those convoluted things in the world.
- 42:33And as somebody loves convoluted things that can be very great or very terrible, depending on how you adapt.
- 42:39And they're adapting things that are intensely convoluted.
- 42:43The origins of Apocalypse, the Iscani Cable X Force.
- 42:47Working with, you know, excuse me.
- 42:49Fighting against some stuff like X Factor, like loving what they're doing there.
- 42:55And the whole, like, as you guys were mentioning thing with Magneto trying to change the past, trying to make in Saba Noah into a good man who could be the future of mutant kind.
- 43:06You know, if he had just had better teaching, if he had trusted people in the right way or they had been more forthcoming with information, maybe things would have gone off.
- 43:14Or we're just dealing with a stable time loop in that you already did this and that already made him in the man that you knew, even though it Would take you going back into the past to make him
- 43:23the man that you knew.
- 43:24Like, yeah, it's all very Terminator, very all over the place there.
- 43:27But it's still a lot of fun.
- 43:29And they're engaging with characters that you normally don't see with X Men.
- 43:33Like Rama Tut Kang.
- 43:35Like, yeah, they've had their interactions with him, but like having him be a huge part of Apocalypse's rise, which I'm pretty sure there was a comic based on that a while back where they fought since, you know, Fantastic
- 43:46Four fought him all the way back in, like, well, fantastic four 1920 somewhere thereabouts.
- 43:51I thought that was brilliant.
- 43:53Making Q.
- 43:54John de Lancy the voice of Rama Tut talking to.
- 43:58Not Patrick Stewart voiced Charles Xavier.
- 44:01But still, you know what they're doing here.
- 44:03Like, that's a great casting gag.
- 44:05As a Star Trek fan, I love that.
- 44:08And you know, Gates McFadden was funny.
- 44:11Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:13I think there was going to be someone else.
- 44:15I can't remember if they've announced him or not.
- 44:17Who will be showing up.
- 44:18Already has.
- 44:20From the Star Trek cast of tng.
- 44:22Yeah, it's just so much fun because they care about the source material, but also care about delivering a story in their own way based on the storylines that came before in their show, while, like showing love and affection
- 44:34for what inspired them to be able to tell these stories.
- 44:37Like a plus.
- 44:38Oh, it's brilliant.
- 44:39And the animation is just so spectacular.
- 44:41I was.
- 44:41Because like my caregiver came in asking about it.
- 44:44He's like, wait, Is this the 90s show?
- 44:46It's like it's continuation.
- 44:47But just look at how much the animation is improved and, and, and he was pretty blown away.
- 44:52But.
- 44:54But yeah, I mean, it's just great storytelling.
- 44:57And again, I love the callback series on the series.
- 44:59But also, again, it's very accessible to new audiences.
- 45:04It does feel like almost like Next Generation in a way or that.
- 45:08And you are just so drawn into the characters here.
- 45:12Now, do we think spoiler.
- 45:14But is Magneto definitely dead or do we think they're gonna do some kind of like resurrection at some point?
- 45:20I mean, I know it's comic since Marvel.
- 45:23I've heard rumors they might go the Krakoa era at some point in time and that could easily bring him back.
- 45:29So maybe he is dead.
- 45:31But you know, this is X Men.
- 45:32Nobody ever dies.
- 45:33Yeah, I like.
- 45:34And well, and I was also looking at something too, because the weird thing about watching this show is if you know anything about the behind the scenes, drama.
- 45:42But the creator, Bo Demayo, was fired right before season one aired, literally a couple days before.
- 45:51But he had already written season two before the firing, because the animation, especially of this quality, takes a long time to produce.
- 45:58And so he had already overseen that before the season went into production.
- 46:02So he's still credited not only for his scripts in this season, but as an executive producer.
- 46:09So it was kind of weird there, but.
- 46:10But I also then, like, I, you know, I wonder if.
- 46:13If he were in charge going forward still, he might, you know, want Magneto dead to still.
- 46:18But, like, the new showrunners, maybe they'll want him back.
- 46:23It's hard to tell, but.
- 46:25But yeah, I've been.
- 46:26I've been following a little bit about that.
- 46:28I read, like, a Vanity Fair article about him.
- 46:31It's still kind of ambiguous in terms of, like, the reasons why he was let go, but.
- 46:36Yeah.
- 46:36So my son wanted to show you guys his.
- 46:39Yes.
- 46:40His little.
- 46:41His little mutant Lego guy here.
- 46:44Come in, buddy.
- 46:45Oh, I love it.
- 46:45I love it.
- 46:46A guest on the podcast today.
- 46:48Yeah, dude, show it.
- 46:50I love it.
- 46:51Yes.
- 46:52What's his name?
- 46:53This one's Gerald.
- 46:54Gerald.
- 46:55Right on.
- 46:56Gerald the mutant.
- 46:58I love it.
- 46:58I love it.
- 46:59They.
- 47:00They, they, they.
- 47:02They really like it.
- 47:03But, dude, who.
- 47:04Who's your favorite X Men character?
- 47:06Who.
- 47:06Who's your favorite X?
- 47:09He's mine, too.
- 47:10Excellent choice.
- 47:10Okay.
- 47:11I am a Hank McCoy fan.
- 47:13Excellent choice.
- 47:13Yeah, I love it.
- 47:15Always been a Nightcrawler guy.
- 47:16That's awesome.
- 47:17Nightcrawler is great, too.
- 47:18I.
- 47:18I like the blue ones.
- 47:19Yeah, he had.
- 47:22He had a line in this one.
- 47:24I think I forgot what it was, but it was.
- 47:28I think it was Magneto trying to change his mind or something, and he had a line that was so poignant.
- 47:34Wow, that was.
- 47:35That's a noted line.
- 47:36I remember what you're talking about, but,.
- 47:38Yeah, I was just like, woof.
- 47:40Like, good.
- 47:41They.
- 47:41They were saying something with that line.
- 47:43I want to go back and see what it was.
- 47:46Yeah.
- 47:46Yeah.
- 47:46Like, the whole, like, the whole just.
- 47:49It was.
- 47:50Yeah.
- 47:50No, I mean, I, like, I sometimes I try not to just, like, gush about a series or movie, but.
- 47:56Yeah, but that's all you can do.
- 47:58That's all I can do here.
- 47:59Like, I don't really have any notes on this.
- 48:02It's been.
- 48:02I cannot wait for this week's episode, especially because it's going to be.
- 48:07It looks like Weapon X focused, so that's going to be a ton of fun.
- 48:10But I.
- 48:12If I.
- 48:12If I had to say like, any criticism, it would be that, like, like most shows, they're.
- 48:16They're too short.
- 48:17I think this season's only nine episodes.
- 48:21But that, you know, is a symptom of just, like, TV in general today.
- 48:27Yes.
- 48:28And that, you know, it's unfortunate, but I realized something like this, you know, the animation takes a long time.
- 48:36Oh, but still, I liked how.
- 48:39Because at least for me, I was forced to just be like, okay, shut up.
- 48:45This is how they're going with it.
- 48:46Because, because, because.
- 48:49Because of the end.
- 48:50It showed.
- 48:51It showed the end of season one.
- 48:53I vividly that, that, that.
- 48:57Sorry, that.
- 48:58That's a visual of Wolverine getting his adamantium sucked out was very powerful.
- 49:04I was like, holy cow.
- 49:05But now he just comes back and I'm like, oh, wait a minute.
- 49:08And then snapping his phone claws.
- 49:11Exactly.
- 49:12That was just a touche.
- 49:14Just a beautiful little.
- 49:16Just a little, like, I see you.
- 49:18I see you.
- 49:19It's like, whoa, curious.
- 49:22Like, I want to know what you guys think of the X Factor stuff real quick as far as, like, them working with the government, because I have opinions on how that could have been done.
- 49:34I mean, I like the introduction of a, like, government sanctioned mutant.
- 49:38Like, I think that adds a little more conflict.
- 49:41I'm curious what they'll do with it going forward.
- 49:44Yeah, it was.
- 49:46They were.
- 49:46I think they were making a statement.
- 49:50They were making a statement.
- 49:52I.
- 49:53I want to get.
- 49:55I want to get Andy Walsh's take on it, because this is multiple men there, so.
- 50:01Yeah, that's right.
- 50:02Yeah.
- 50:02Yeah.
- 50:03I'll say this too, as, like, go ahead.
- 50:05Well, just like, it's like, you know, we talk about this a lot.
- 50:07Like, how X Men relates to it speaks really to a lot of marginalized communities and minorities.
- 50:12And, like, I see it like, I view X Men a lot through a disability lens.
- 50:16And, like, when I see something like that of, like, you know, mutant siding with the government.
- 50:21Speaking as someone in the disability community, like, I've seen that in, like, disability communities where, like, there are plenty of disabled people who kind of like, this is not just, like, us applicable, but, like, just in general, they'll
- 50:34side with, like, organizations or politicians or whatever that are not in your best interest at all.
- 50:42So that definitely happens in, you know, and so I think it's a cool storyline to explore and how a Jubilee.
- 50:49Was able to kind of change her mind.
- 50:52Change.
- 50:52Oh, what's her face's mind?
- 50:53Laris.
- 50:54But, yeah, I thought that was a.
- 50:57A.
- 50:57It spoke to some of the tensions of our current.
- 51:01Of our current time.
- 51:02I Think.
- 51:03Yeah, See, I would agree if they hadn't ever had the reveal that they knew that they were putting, you know, like collars on people and suppressing their powers and abilities and all that.
- 51:13Like, if that had been like a reveal to them, it's like, oh, no, no, no.
- 51:16We were work with you, so protect and all this.
- 51:20Now it just makes them bad guys.
- 51:22And that doesn't make me feel good about anything they're doing because I love these characters.
- 51:27I know Andy will say more things, you know, when he gets his time to shine, about the multiple man.
- 51:31Like that doesn't sound very in character for him, you know, for, for Jamie to do that.
- 51:37I guess maybe they just did that for the sake of simplicity and all that.
- 51:41Because, you know, we're supposed to be cheering for X Force primarily in that episode.
- 51:45I think so.
- 51:45Right?
- 51:46Yeah.
- 51:47But yeah, I agree.
- 51:48Jubilee being the fact of being like adding rationality to both teams is really great.
- 51:53I just wish they hadn't made them like shills in this sense because that's not who they are.
- 51:59Yeah, that's fair.
- 52:00And I think again, if this, maybe if that had been like a two parter, like I can make the season a little longer, they could have explored that in more depth.
- 52:06I feel like they had to cram a lot into, you know, 25, 30 minutes, whatever.
- 52:11Yeah.
- 52:11But I think that's really my only criticism of this season so far.
- 52:14Yeah, I mean, that's pretty good if that's all.
- 52:16Yeah, yeah, yeah, awesome.
- 52:18But no, overall, I mean, very high rating on this.
- 52:21I would say at least 9 out of 10.
- 52:239, 5.
- 52:24It's pretty spectacular.
- 52:26So definitely check out X Men 97.
- 52:28If you haven't already.
- 52:30Even though we are.
- 52:31If you, if you haven't.
- 52:32We already spoiled like major things from the first four episodes of the season, but I think it's still very enjoyable.
- 52:38So.
- 52:39Awesome.
- 52:41Well, guys, this has been great.
- 52:43And before we go, do you guys have any recommendations you want to share?
- 52:48Either one of these topics or something totally different?
- 52:51I can start because I do.
- 52:53I just thought of one.
- 52:54So, like, obviously One Woman of Tomorrow is a great Supergirl comic, probably the best, but one that I think is also really worth mentioning and maybe a little underrated.
- 53:04I don't hear enough talk about it, but it's called Supergirl Being Super.
- 53:08It's an original miniseries graphic novel, I think, just graphic novel by Mariko Tamaki and Joelle Jones.
- 53:16It's very.
- 53:17It's Kara in high school.
- 53:18It's a very coming of age story.
- 53:21So it's a much more, Much more optimistic, a little more light hearted than one with tomorrow.
- 53:27It's a different type of story, but I absolutely love that one.
- 53:30I read that a few years ago.
- 53:31It's gorgeous art, great creative team.
- 53:35So that's one I would really recommend seeking out at your local comic shop or finding on the DC app or whatever.
- 53:42Yeah, I mean, hard not to say.
- 53:43X Men 97 Season 2.
- 53:46They've got like four or six episodes left in this season as far as I'm aware.
- 53:52We're getting a next season next year.
- 53:54You know how things used to be.
- 53:56Yeah, it's still the shorter seasons, but at least they're going to be a year's wait.
- 53:59Yes.
- 53:59Instead of two or three or four or five with or whatever it is of modern Hollywood.
- 54:03I will complain about it as many times as I have to, as you said, until you do what you do here.
- 54:08Because thank you for actually caring.
- 54:10What is your ideal season like?
- 54:12I mean for something like this, 2024 would be fine.
- 54:16Really?
- 54:17Yeah.
- 54:17I mean that's there, that's your take.
- 54:20On, on like on the bottle episodes or the filler episodes.
- 54:26What do you think about that?
- 54:27I mean for live action tv, they're done for the sake of saving budget and I totally get it.
- 54:32Yeah.
- 54:32Like sometimes you can do it extremely well other times.
- 54:35Right.
- 54:36It's kind of obvious.
- 54:37Speaking of tng earlier, most of the body bottle episodes early on, the first couple seasons suck.
- 54:43And the first couple seasons aren't the best either.
- 54:46They.
- 54:46They get their legs eventually.
- 54:47Yeah, but.
- 54:48And that's one of the constraints of doing that many is getting to the point where you need a bottle episode like that to save on budget because you're paying people this much and you're making new sets and all
- 54:57that.
- 54:57Like, I get it.
- 54:58But yeah, go ahead.
- 54:59I think for the big dramas and like big factors, you know, like instead of 8 to 10, I think like 13 to 15 is good.
- 55:05Like, like the pit was 15 episodes seasons and it's great.
- 55:08But I.
- 55:09Oh, for animation and sitcoms, like there's no reason why you can't do like 18 to 2022, something like that.
- 55:16Like, it's just because I felt that way about like I loved Rooster this year, the new Steve Carell obviously gone.
- 55:22But it was 10 episodes.
- 55:23I'm like, there's no reason for.
- 55:24And I would have loved filler episodes that, that kind of like explored the characters more.
- 55:29But I just.
- 55:30When that scene ended I was like, come on, this is not.
- 55:32I mean yes, I'm.
- 55:33You know, they get some big names in it, but there's no reason why this couldn't be at least 15, but like closer to 20.
- 55:40Yeah.
- 55:4112 is my favorite.
- 55:4212 or 13.
- 55:43Yeah.
- 55:44I'll give you my real answer.
- 55:45It's a vague answer, but it's as many as you need to get your story done.
- 55:47I mean get your characters.
- 55:49Like as far as the Ms.
- 55:51Marvel series was six episodes, but it felt like they didn't.
- 55:55They needed more time to develop stuff.
- 55:56Right.
- 55:57Versus the Kenobi series was way too long.
- 55:59It should have been a movie movie.
- 56:00Yes.
- 56:01Acolyte was basically half a season.
- 56:04Yeah.
- 56:05Yeah.
- 56:05Alien Earth felt like a mid season finale.
- 56:08Yeah, exactly, exactly.
- 56:10Just like two or three more episodes would have been perfect.
- 56:13Yeah.
- 56:13I think.
- 56:14And sometimes the 8 to 10 does where like Monarch work on Apple.
- 56:17I think it, I mean.
- 56:18Yes, you have to wait a while in between seasons.
- 56:20Good.
- 56:20But it is like big budget movie quality and.
- 56:24Yeah, like the, the 10 episode seasons.
- 56:27Yes, it works and they do really good to where it like, like to your point, it tells the full story there.
- 56:32Sorry, that was a little side.
- 56:33We need a whole episode.
- 56:36Well, I mean you're gonna get us to go off on tangents, but Evan, what's your recommendation for this?
- 56:43I'm gonna go with if you're looking for some.
- 56:46A good new music and you're in that, in that scene, the post deconstruction scene of your Christianity and I would say that that artist Audrey Assad, she's got some.
- 56:59She's got some banger Christian music.
- 57:01So check that out.
- 57:03Nice.
- 57:03Awesome.
- 57:04Awesome guys.
- 57:05Well, this was a blast as always.
- 57:08Really appreciate you both being here and it was.
- 57:11Oh, this was great.
