- 0:00Speaker 1: Texas Tuesday because we talked football in the lone Star
- 0:03Speaker 1: State on Tuesdays, and that includes Greg Tepper, managing editor
- 0:07Speaker 1: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine, who joins us in
- 0:09Speaker 1: the three o'clock hour to talk college football, and this
- 0:13Speaker 1: final weekend of regular season play in high school football,
- 0:18Speaker 1: it has plumbag.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Do you have a game Friday night? By the way,
- 0:20Speaker 2: are you calling a game Friday? We have Texas basketball
- 0:23Speaker 2: on Friday night? What am I thinking?
- 0:24Speaker 1: I know I didn't have a football game. I know
- 0:27Speaker 1: I wasn't going to be in Dallas. I know I
- 0:31Speaker 1: wasn't going to be in Dallas to do high school
- 0:33Speaker 1: Scoreboard live this Friday because of the long WRNS home
- 0:36Speaker 1: opener Friday night. He gets used to Christ, I just
- 0:38Speaker 1: blanked on you for a minute there. So anyway, it's
- 0:41Speaker 1: a very important final weekend of the regular season in
- 0:44Speaker 1: the high school football in Texas, but also a big
- 0:46Speaker 1: weekend in college football.
- 0:49Speaker 2: We know that.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So there's plenty to discuss with regard to that, and
- 0:53Speaker 1: we'll do that on this Texas Tuesday. But like I said,
- 0:56Speaker 1: also we would like to refer to it as a
- 0:58Speaker 1: Texan Tuesday because the producer Cameron Parker will provide return
- 1:05Speaker 1: cuts today involving Texas based artist. There might be different ones,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but the list always, always, always includes in the four
- 1:16Speaker 1: o'clock hour the King George Strait, in the three o'clock hour,
- 1:19Speaker 1: the iconic Willie Neilson, and in the two o'clock hour
- 1:24Speaker 1: the immortal Stevie ray Vaughan, with whom you just returned
- 1:28Speaker 1: for the cut.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Yeah, him and his brother Jimmy Hard to be off
- 1:32Speaker 3: their what was that album called Family Style?
- 1:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I believe Yeah. So anyway, so that's so,
- 1:41Speaker 1: that's where that is. So football on a Tuesday, obviously
- 1:49Speaker 1: here going forward is going to mean updated the playoff rankings.
- 1:56Speaker 2: It happens at six o'clock on Tuesday nights. You know.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It happened some.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Last year Cam when we had a basketball game, either
- 2:04Speaker 1: a men's game or a women's game to broadcast. It'll
- 2:06Speaker 1: happen again next Tuesday when Texas when the Texas men
- 2:10Speaker 1: hosts Chicago State.
- 2:11Speaker 2: But it'll be before tip off anyway, it'll come down
- 2:13Speaker 2: before that. We know this.
- 2:17Speaker 1: The longgrange will be. I say, we know this. I
- 2:22Speaker 1: say I'm not on the committee. I could be wrong,
- 2:26Speaker 1: but I started to say, we know that Texas will
- 2:28Speaker 1: be in the top ten, probably or possibly in the
- 2:33Speaker 1: top five. I know they've ascended to number five, back
- 2:39Speaker 1: to the number five spot in both the AP and
- 2:41Speaker 1: the coaches polls after Penn State's lost to Ohio State.
- 2:45Speaker 3: So could happen when their first rankings? Will it be
- 2:50Speaker 3: the top four? Will be the top four from the
- 2:53Speaker 3: group before or the Power four conferences? Or are they
- 2:55Speaker 3: just going to be They're going to rank their top
- 2:57Speaker 3: twenty five.
- 2:58Speaker 1: The way that I understand this, and I'm here to
- 3:02Speaker 1: say that I will happily walk in tomorrow and say no,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I'm wrong about that. But the way I understand it,
- 3:09Speaker 1: they're just ranking the top twenty five right now.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So and but that's kind of what.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Richard Clark, the executive director of the College Football Playoff,
- 3:21Speaker 1: That's kind of what he said when there was the webinar.
- 3:29Speaker 1: When the webinar happened, he said that when we had
- 3:33Speaker 1: him on, we didn't get that far into the discussion,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but I'm pretty sure that he said that they're just
- 3:41Speaker 1: all the committee is charged with doing right now is
- 3:45Speaker 1: ranking the top twenty five teams like they've been doing
- 3:48Speaker 1: for the past decade, and they'll start at number twenty
- 3:51Speaker 1: five and they'll roll down and I would say somewhere
- 3:57Speaker 1: in that top twenty five in the lower part.
- 4:01Speaker 2: There's a decent chance.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's a lot by any stretch, but
- 4:05Speaker 1: there's a decent chance that Army can be in there,
- 4:08Speaker 1: and they would be a G five team, a group
- 4:11Speaker 1: of five since then the American and then continuing upward
- 4:16Speaker 1: somewhere probably in the.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Top twelve right now.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Probably again not a lock, but probably Boise State is
- 4:25Speaker 1: going to be in there, and that would be.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Of course SMU is in the ACC though, so they're
- 4:34Speaker 1: in a they're in a Power four. But by the way,
- 4:38Speaker 1: that's an incredibly common mistake that many people are making
- 4:42Speaker 1: these days that are just thinking.
- 4:44Speaker 2: About SMU being in the America.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Because it's their first year in the newly reinvented Atlantic
- 4:49Speaker 1: Coast Conference that includes the likes of Callen Stanford in it,
- 4:54Speaker 1: SMU has a clear path to get to the a
- 4:58Speaker 1: SEC Championship game.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Now, they really do. If you think about it, they.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You know, they that that was a gigantic win that
- 5:09Speaker 1: the Mustangs had on Saturday night over a previously unbeaten
- 5:12Speaker 1: pit team. So the you know, the list of unbeaten
- 5:17Speaker 1: teams continues to shrivel and SMU.
- 5:24Speaker 3: They have a favorable schedule coming up. Craig, the Boston
- 5:27Speaker 3: College is one in three. They don't have any top
- 5:29Speaker 3: twenty five teams, and that fact, I mean, Virginia will
- 5:32Speaker 3: be their toughest game because they play cows zero to
- 5:34Speaker 3: four in the conference. Virginia's two and three, so they're
- 5:37Speaker 3: on an inside track to make the ACC Championship in Miami.
- 5:41Speaker 3: They they they play Georgia Tech, Wake Forest and Syracuse.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Now at Syracuse might be a little bit tougher than
- 5:46Speaker 3: anything on on SMU's schedule, but I mean, it looks
- 5:51Speaker 3: like we're headed towards Miami SMU in the NCC toutle game,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and it doesn't make any sense.
- 5:56Speaker 1: None of them, none of them right now have the
- 6:01Speaker 1: opponents for SMU have a winning record. None have a
- 6:04Speaker 1: winning record right now. They have five hundred records of
- 6:07Speaker 1: Boston College is four and four, Virginia's four and four in.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Kallas four and four.
- 6:11Speaker 1: That's what I meant about a clear path to the
- 6:16Speaker 1: a SEC Championship game for SMU once they got over
- 6:19Speaker 1: the big hurdle of Pitt and they survived that overtime
- 6:22Speaker 1: game at Duke, which quite frankly, they very conceivably could
- 6:25Speaker 1: have lost. But they have a big road win at
- 6:27Speaker 1: Louisville that that matters a lot. They just pummeled Florida
- 6:31Speaker 1: State like everybody else's is doing these days now, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: their only loss was to an undefeated BYU team and
- 6:40Speaker 1: that was by three points. So they've got a real
- 6:44Speaker 1: shot to be in the a SEC championship game against Miami.
- 6:48Speaker 2: That's so you're right.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Where it's going to go from here is going to
- 6:53Speaker 1: be interesting to see, and we start to get an
- 6:57Speaker 1: indication of that tonight with the first rankings. Hither Dinners,
- 7:01Speaker 1: who follows it for ESPN, was posting some questions and
- 7:04Speaker 1: one of them was which is the best one loss team?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Who do you think is the best one loss team
- 7:11Speaker 2: right now?
- 7:13Speaker 3: I would just say Georgia because I saw them firsthand.
- 7:17Speaker 3: But Carson Beck, he's played so bad, either them or
- 7:22Speaker 3: Ohio State, I guess.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know Texas fans.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Sorry, I guess I'm not biased enough to put them
- 7:30Speaker 3: at best one, but I want to see them close
- 7:32Speaker 3: out the final month little bit stronger. But I would
- 7:34Speaker 3: say probably Georgia, Ohio State, Texas.
- 7:37Speaker 2: The top three.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a good chance that she also raises the question,
- 7:42Speaker 1: is two loss Alabama a playoff team?
- 7:45Speaker 2: And if so, how high are the Crimson Tide?
- 7:48Speaker 3: Boy, the collegeball media just cannot quit Alabama. They love,
- 7:52Speaker 3: they are not giving up on.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Well, a lot of that well and a lot of
- 7:57Speaker 1: a lot of.
- 7:57Speaker 2: That is track runner.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Of course, they're they're believe that they have a track
- 8:01Speaker 1: record that Texas, A and M. You know it didn't
- 8:05Speaker 1: have before they lost a second So now they have
- 8:08Speaker 1: two losses in Clemson with two loss so they're thinking
- 8:11Speaker 1: a two loss Alabama. A lot of the people are
- 8:13Speaker 1: saying they're better than both A.
- 8:15Speaker 3: And M and Clemson if they lose this week, Craig,
- 8:17Speaker 3: I bet you a million dollars that before the final
- 8:22Speaker 3: rankings they'll be somewhere either on the first take or
- 8:24Speaker 3: fine bomb Ken three loss Alabama still contend they're like
- 8:27Speaker 3: the Los Angeles lakers of college football.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Rate.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Yeah, or some used to ascribe that to the Cowboys.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I think they're finally off the Cowboys. I would agree
- 8:37Speaker 1: hopefully that they're a big trade today. Yeah, we'll get
- 8:43Speaker 1: to that coming up in some NFL think. Okay, so,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and then her third question is how high is Boise
- 8:48Speaker 1: State ranked?
- 8:49Speaker 2: And this is the question we brought up.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You know, they said this could be one of the
- 8:55Speaker 1: most underrated storylines of the playoff because two very diary
- 9:00Speaker 1: different scenarios could happen. Boise State could be ranked outside
- 9:04Speaker 1: of the committee's top twelve on selection day and then
- 9:06Speaker 1: knock out the twelfth ranked team to make room for
- 9:09Speaker 1: the fifth highest ranked conference champion. Or and this is
- 9:12Speaker 1: an important consideration, Boise State could be the fourth highest
- 9:18Speaker 1: ranked conference champion and earn a first round by at
- 9:23Speaker 1: the expense of the ACC or the Big Twelve champion.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Tuesday's rankings will show how firmly Boise State is leading
- 9:29Speaker 1: the Group of five race and how its rankings could
- 9:32Speaker 1: impact other contenders.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I completely agree with.
- 9:34Speaker 3: That, especially if Miami loses in the ACC title game.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Or BYU, they're the only remaining unbeing in the Big twelve.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Iowa State got knocked out, You actually makes more sense.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, if keep an eye on the Holy
- 9:50Speaker 1: War this weekend. Utah has been down, but BYU plays
- 9:54Speaker 1: at Utah and that would be the ACC the Big
- 9:59Speaker 1: twelve nightmare to have them lose before the conference championship.
- 10:05Speaker 1: You know, they need an unbeaten conference champion to lock
- 10:09Speaker 1: themselves into a top four spot.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I really do think that.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And if they don't, Boise State could be the number
- 10:18Speaker 1: four and then you could see a BYU have to
- 10:23Speaker 1: you know, slot it in in the top twelve, but
- 10:26Speaker 1: not getting a first round by could happen. Her other question,
- 10:31Speaker 1: does Indiana really have a chance of the playoffs. Most
- 10:33Speaker 1: seem to be downplaying that. Yeah, they don't, you know it,
- 10:36Speaker 1: don't e much it. But I'm here to tell you
- 10:40Speaker 1: we find out in eleven days Indiana is gonna win
- 10:44Speaker 1: this week. So eleven days from now they go to Columbus.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and they lose that game, it's gonna be Ohio
- 10:52Speaker 3: State Oregon most likely in the in the Big Ten championships.
- 10:56Speaker 3: So Indiana at eleven and one. And what if it's
- 10:59Speaker 3: like a you know, a three or five point loss
- 11:01Speaker 3: to Ohio State, Well about eleven in one, Indiana, here's
- 11:04Speaker 3: the problem. You're gonna put in four loss Alabama over them.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Here's the problem. Not four loss in no way, I
- 11:09Speaker 3: don't even think three. But here's the problem. Strength to
- 11:12Speaker 3: schedule for Indiana one three. Their best win is over Nebraska.
- 11:17Speaker 3: You know, that's why a lot of the people who
- 11:20Speaker 3: don't like the log Ones who are forecasting against them,
- 11:22Speaker 3: saying Texas better not lose again because that strength to
- 11:26Speaker 3: schedule isn't going to help them even in the SEC.
- 11:29Speaker 3: You know, that kind of thing went with folks who
- 11:30Speaker 3: are taking a close look at that.
- 11:33Speaker 2: So there's there.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So anyway, her projected bracket right now would be on
- 11:41Speaker 1: a projected top twelve from the playoff committee number one seed,
- 11:45Speaker 1: Oregon number two, Georgia number three, Miami number four BYU
- 11:49Speaker 1: and then the first round matchup she has Alabama in
- 11:52Speaker 1: the field at number twelve, playing at number five Ohio State,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and then the number nine the nine versus eight matchup
- 12:04Speaker 1: is Boise State as a nine seed. I could see
- 12:07Speaker 1: that playing Tennessee in eight seed. She does have Indiana
- 12:11Speaker 1: in the field as the eleven seed playing in Austin
- 12:15Speaker 1: against the log Horns.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Roger Wallace's head might explode. That's his Ama monitor Indiana.
- 12:21Speaker 3: And Jimmie Rosenthal, the Texas woman.
- 12:23Speaker 2: That's right, he worked there and it was there. Yeah.
- 12:26Speaker 2: And then the other.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Matchup would be in the first round would be Notre Dame,
- 12:31Speaker 1: the number ten seed at Penn State the number seven seed,
- 12:34Speaker 1: last two in Indiana and Alabama. The Alabama thing is
- 12:40Speaker 1: going to take care of itself this week one.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Way or another.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's an elimination game.
- 12:45Speaker 1: It is against LSU. They've got to win to have
- 12:49Speaker 1: it so.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Fun Bomb said, it's the biggest college football game of
- 12:53Speaker 3: the season.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Okay, SMU is in the first four out along with
- 12:58Speaker 1: Texas A and m LSU and Old Miss, and then
- 13:00Speaker 1: the next four out Iowa State, Colorado, Clemson, and Washington State.
- 13:05Speaker 1: That's the way Heather dinnis season anyway. But there's other
- 13:09Speaker 1: measurables we'll take a look at as well. All Right,
- 13:11Speaker 1: up next Inconceivable on a Tuesday afternoon here on sports
- 13:15Speaker 1: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
