Transcript
- 0:01Hi, and welcome to the Seated podcast with Furniture Row.
- 0:04I'm Jessa, creative director and design extraordinaire, and I'm.
- 0:08Barb, interior designer and buyer.
- 0:14Well, hello everyone, and welcome to the Seated podcast.
- 0:18We are on a new our new Season 2 set today and we're joined by
- 0:25Brittany Pillard. So welcome.
- 0:28To thank you so much for having me.
- 0:29Yes, we're so excited to be able to, I know, to learn from people
- 0:35in the community, 'cause you're Denver local, and just to have
- 0:42some good design conversations from new people's perspectives.
- 0:48So yeah, Brittany, you are the creator behind a lifestyle brand
- 0:52known for romantic, feminine aesthetic and timeless approach.
- 0:58And you've really built a community around classic style,
- 1:02which we appreciate. Your perspective really
- 1:06beautifully captures what people are calling the grand millennial
- 1:10aesthetic and which combines nostalgia and modern living in a
- 1:15beautiful way. So yeah, we'll just have a good
- 1:19conversation about how traditional design is making a
- 1:22comeback and how that transitions to making a home
- 1:26with heart. Yeah.
- 1:29Yeah, I mean, we think we know your style, but maybe you could
- 1:33explain it, you know, to our listeners.
- 1:35Sure what your style is. So I do think it falls within
- 1:39that grand millennial title that so many people are using now.
- 1:44My styles collected and layered. I like a timeless feel, and I
- 1:51would say romantic as well, just with florals and textures.
- 1:55I like a tailored upholstery, lots of draperies, and more than
- 2:02anything, I think I want to create a home with character.
- 2:06I want people to walk in and be able to to tell this is our
- 2:11home. This is they could feel our
- 2:13story through through the space. My husband would probably say
- 2:18that our home is chaotic because we have three small children,
- 2:22but I think most of the time you can tell a lot about us when you
- 2:25walk into our home. It's beautiful it.
- 2:28Is a beautiful home. The photos I've seen Beautiful.
- 2:31Thank you so much. Yeah.
- 2:33Do you have any things that you think of that really informed
- 2:39your design style? Like, was it your upbringing,
- 2:42your grandma? Your mom?
- 2:45So growing up, my mom was really good, I would say, at creating a
- 2:50house that felt like a home. And she and my dad were really
- 2:54into Victorian antiques. That was their passion.
- 2:58They would go searching for these and go to auctions and
- 3:01things like that. And my grandmother was really
- 3:05big on heirlooms and she saved things that were very
- 3:08sentimental framed things, lots of family photos around.
- 3:13And so I think I grew up feeling that those objects could have a
- 3:17lot of meaning and a lot of heart.
- 3:18And they also add to that character that you're trying to
- 3:22create in a home. And we spent a lot of time in
- 3:27England. My dad worked in England when I
- 3:29was growing up. And I think that kind of just
- 3:34expanded my horizons. I was like, wow, you know,
- 3:37pattern drenching and the English florals and mixing some
- 3:41florals and stripes, but having those darker wood pieces.
- 3:46I, I really loved that. And I feel like I might, you'll
- 3:50be able to see in in our home. My style reflects that.
- 3:53That's awesome. Yeah.
- 3:56Well, yeah, let's kind of take a look at your style particularly.
- 4:01And also let's let's define, let's define grand millennial
- 4:07because we've thrown that around enough.
- 4:08Let's define it and kind of look at what that means.
- 4:12I mean, to me, I think Grand Millennial has this kind of
- 4:16nostalgic component. It is traditional style, but
- 4:19there's sort of a softness to it.
- 4:22You notice little things that you might have seen in a
- 4:26grandmother's house growing up, like this little rocking chair
- 4:29or the Shinhwas or details, the framed Prince.
- 4:34It it has a little bit of a softness to it.
- 4:37And I think so many of us as millennials, we did go through
- 4:42the millennial grey and everything just was a little
- 4:46cold. Didn't you go through that?
- 4:48Yeah, I'm curious. Maybe not so much.
- 4:52I think I've always been a grand millennial at heart, and I liked
- 4:56my little treasures and organizing my little trinkets as
- 4:59a child. But there was one period of time
- 5:03we had a open concept house, and that was a real challenge for me
- 5:08to decorate because it didn't really feel true to me.
- 5:11And I leaned a little bit into the Chi and Joanna Gaines a
- 5:16little bit OK, And it felt very off.
- 5:18I could tell right away. I think it's really important to
- 5:22stay true to your style and you'll feel when it's something
- 5:25feels right and, and it just feels comfortable and easy to
- 5:28decorate. Yeah, well, you got back on
- 5:30track. Right.
- 5:32You have to design around whatever space you're into a
- 5:35degree though, like and transform your personal style to
- 5:38that space. So it would be hard to have like
- 5:41a really builder grade modern space translate into grand
- 5:46millennial right away in your mind and it it takes time to
- 5:50grow into so. Were you able to change that
- 5:54home that was an open concept, so did you remodel or anything
- 5:58like? That we didn't do a lot of
- 5:59remodeling. It was kind of bought with the
- 6:03idea that it would be an investment and we would find our
- 6:05forever home later when we had children.
- 6:08Yeah. And so now that we have our
- 6:11forever home, we're doing more renovations and things like
- 6:14that. So it's not an open concept.
- 6:17No, it's all the rooms are closed.
- 6:20It's it was built in the 80s and it has a very traditional, it's
- 6:23a red brick, lots of molding and and details like that.
- 6:28So yeah, it's been fun, I think. That helps too if the rooms are
- 6:32defined spaces to really go in and decorate those up.
- 6:36It's, it is hard when it's an open concept to like create, you
- 6:40know, in a different environment as you move throughout the
- 6:44house. So I think it's coming back.
- 6:46These closed, closed in rooms, you know, the kitchen off on its
- 6:51own, the dining room off on its own.
- 6:53It feels very cozy and each space has an intention behind
- 6:58it. If it's the cozy family TV room
- 7:01where you watch movies or it's a little bit more formal where you
- 7:05host people, I think, I think it feels nice, yeah.
- 7:10I agree. Well, and you can hide things in
- 7:12places if people are coming over, so it's not just like
- 7:16everything's out in the open. Yeah, that was a big thing we
- 7:19noticed. We had our first child, our
- 7:21daughter, in the open concept home, and right away we noticed
- 7:27she would be toddling around and there's just toys everywhere and
- 7:30there's no place to tuck them away or hide them.
- 7:32It was kind of every place was her space.
- 7:35Yeah. So now we have a designated play
- 7:37room and that's the kids area on the main floor.
- 7:43It's kind of a cool way to keep things, yeah, neat and tidy and
- 7:47kind of just organized that way. Do you like how you use your
- 7:53trays and things to keep? You know, like you were showing
- 7:56the picture of Gigi's room? Is it Gigi?
- 7:59Yeah, yeah. Where you put everything like on
- 8:03a tray, so it's not like all spread out.
- 8:06So yes, yeah. How do you keep their toys and
- 8:10things organized? So I love a trinket, I love
- 8:13collections, I love collecting things and it can start to feel
- 8:17a little cluttery. So one thing I've learned as a
- 8:20tray like you have here, I especially like the silver
- 8:24gallery trays with the edge. And if you put a collection on
- 8:28one of those, it just makes it feel contained and corralled and
- 8:32more organized. You can also put one of those
- 8:36like on a bookshelf, on a dresser.
- 8:39If you have a tea tea set, put it on a tray and it feels like
- 8:43more pulled together that way. I love Heron the porcelain
- 8:47animals and they can feel a little messy, but I put them on
- 8:52these little silver trays here and put them in the kids
- 8:57bookshelf or something like that and it feels just like it has
- 9:00more of a purpose. Yeah, yeah, it's almost like
- 9:03that's a great organization tool.
- 9:06And it reminds me of an area rug where every, it kind of contains
- 9:10the space, defines the space into what it is.
- 9:16So it's not just like stuff is everywhere.
- 9:18It's like stuff has a place, yes, so.
- 9:22And organizing groups of things I think helps.
- 9:26You can still have those collections or maybe heirlooms,
- 9:30things like that, but they're on a specific area and it just
- 9:36visually helps organize, keep things organized it.
- 9:40Probably helps the children too, because if you're like, you need
- 9:43to clean your room. They know that these things go
- 9:45on that tray or these things go in this bookcase.
- 9:49Yeah, yeah. You know, because a lot of times
- 9:51they don't know how to. Clean up.
- 9:54Well, these are adorable photos from your home, though, and I
- 9:56kind of want to just like look more examples of how the grand
- 10:01millennial aesthetic plays out in your world.
- 10:05And you mentioned your red brick home.
- 10:07So let's kind of take a look at some examples of your Creator
- 10:12account. I love this house.
- 10:14I love that I taught my kids to ride their bikes in the
- 10:17driveway. I love that I slept with them in
- 10:19tents in the backyard. I love that we carved our
- 10:22initials in the tree out front. This house is warm in the
- 10:25winter, cool in the summer and looks sectacular with Christmas
- 10:28lights. It's a great house, and I never
- 10:31want to move. I love that movie.
- 10:34That audio is so good. Right?
- 10:36Yeah. And I think that's something
- 10:39when I think about this term grand millennial, a lot of us
- 10:43think back to what home is and how home feels warm and inviting
- 10:48and cozy. And so many of us picture the
- 10:51house from father of the bride, right?
- 10:53Yes. And justice, how inviting it
- 10:56looked and how warm and Nina and, you know, it just felt like
- 11:00home. And so I think that's the
- 11:02perfect audio for walking through a house.
- 11:06And our house is, you know, not perfect.
- 11:08We have a lot of renovations to to do and to go.
- 11:11But it's the memories that you make there and those little
- 11:14personal touches that make it feel so warm and special and
- 11:18tell your story. Right.
- 11:20And it's it contains your life. Something else about Grand
- 11:23Millennial that I think we should touch on is it is a
- 11:27lifestyle. Like it's something that you
- 11:29can't just like move in and have it all together.
- 11:32Like if you move into a place that's curated over time.
- 11:35Yeah. So I like that being the
- 11:40expectation that it's almost like you can set the stage as a
- 11:44canvas to paint on overtime. Yeah.
- 11:47So we collected and layered. Mm hmm.
- 11:51Yeah. So I know we had touched on your
- 11:54daughter's room, but I think this is a really good example to
- 11:58kind of exemplify your grand millennial style specifically.
- 12:04And we're looking at just a lot of beautiful floral wallpaper,
- 12:11soft pinks, really antique looking mirrors.
- 12:17Yeah, I think to me, Georgina's room is that grand millennial
- 12:22feel. Like in a nutshell, even down to
- 12:26the color palette, the green and pink, the gilt mirror, the lamp
- 12:33shave. You can see on the edge here
- 12:35there are three little paintings, doll paintings.
- 12:39Those were from my bedroom growing up.
- 12:42The rattan trays. Everything is very feminine and
- 12:46soft. Even the books you've
- 12:48coordinated, the colors in the books, it looks so pretty.
- 12:51Yeah. What a beautiful room.
- 12:53Yeah, that's another tip I would have.
- 12:55If you're liking more of a full look and you don't want it to
- 13:00feel too messy or cluttery. I find that when I stick to a
- 13:05pretty tight color palette, like maybe two colors in Georginae
- 13:08Room, it's mostly pink and green.
- 13:11There's a lot of cream, obviously, but it helps to it to
- 13:15not feel too messy or cluttery. There's a lot going on,
- 13:19obviously, but because we stick to that kind of pink and green
- 13:23color palette, it really helps. Yeah, things together.
- 13:26Good idea. Too.
- 13:28Yeah, just so things don't you can layer a lot of pattern that
- 13:32way without it feeling chaotic if they all have the same color
- 13:36palette. Yeah.
- 13:38Yeah. So if somebody was starting in a
- 13:39room and or like I don't even know where to start, maybe
- 13:43select the three colors and just build on.
- 13:45On that. Yeah, I think that helps.
- 13:48Yeah, yeah. I love this.
- 13:50I love this. Is this like an entrance area?
- 13:53Yeah, yes, this is the entry and I love Christmas.
- 13:57I go all out at Christmas and love it.
- 13:59My favorite holiday. Yeah, yeah.
- 14:02Listeners were looking at a beautiful entryway looking table
- 14:08that's antique. It's white, it's got some brass,
- 14:12or not brass, but like kind of vintage gold.
- 14:15Hardware. Actually not.
- 14:17That's from the front gate. Oh OK, but it looks timeless.
- 14:21It does look. I love that little table.
- 14:23Yeah, it's got. Mixing new with the old?
- 14:26Oh, for sure, for sure. Chair is an antique.
- 14:30So I mean, yeah, I I mix antique and new all the time.
- 14:35Do you reupholster or do you just keep whatever fabrics?
- 14:38On there that had been reupholstered years and years
- 14:42ago. But a lot of the time I keep the
- 14:45fabric if I can, especially if it's a nice antique fabric.
- 14:49I. Want that?
- 14:50Yeah. But we have some that we really,
- 14:52they're in pretty bad shape and they need to be reupholstered.
- 14:56So we're working on that. While we're looking at this, I
- 15:00mean, obviously it's a great place to kind of sit down and
- 15:03like put your shoes on before you leave or just make sure you
- 15:07have everything collected. Is that a shoe basket?
- 15:11So that basket, we have a no shoe house that's and I know
- 15:15that's controversial. I like it.
- 15:17Oh, no, I'm a no shoe. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:19Some people, you know, and if we're having a lot of people
- 15:22over, there's a party, Obviously we, we just kind of let it
- 15:25happen. But, you know, when the kids
- 15:28were little, I grew up, we didn't wear shoes in the house.
- 15:31Yeah. And when the kids were little
- 15:34and they would be crawling all over the floor, it would just
- 15:36kind of gross me out to have people tracking in.
- 15:39Yeah. It's like, you know?
- 15:41Walking downtown and we don't know what's on the ground there.
- 15:44And then you come into your house and what's your plan?
- 15:46Yeah, you know, you're just going to track.
- 15:47That in your mouth. And.
- 15:49So we really, I buy slippers from Amazon and I keep them in
- 15:55the basket. And there's this little sign
- 15:58that my dad gave me that says please remove your shoes.
- 16:02You can ask people. I have booties in there.
- 16:05So if they'd rather put a booty over, they can do that.
- 16:07But if they have like a slipper, they can wear a slipper.
- 16:09If they're like I did not think through my socks.
- 16:12Today and I'm just not ready for pedicure, you know, just put a
- 16:15booty on. Yeah.
- 16:17That is thoughtful. Can we talk a little bit too
- 16:20about your framing, your picture framing?
- 16:23I love those plan you go about that.
- 16:26Antique frames are obviously so lovely.
- 16:29These particular frames are by a company called Elias Art Metal.
- 16:34OK, And they were in the US and now apparently it's a family
- 16:38business that is closing. The kids don't want to take it
- 16:40on, but they are, I think 18 karat gold electroplate.
- 16:47And so they're so beautiful. The little details you can see
- 16:50on the little I don't know, there's ribbons and wreaths.
- 16:54And I am such a hound for these like I will look on eBay and
- 16:59Etsy, Poshmark and I buy them up because you can only get them on
- 17:03the can never get them used. Yeah, used market.
- 17:07So anyway, that's one of my little passions.
- 17:09And if you like a grand millennial look, buying a couple
- 17:13of those from eBay is a great way to start.
- 17:16I think it adds a lot of personality.
- 17:18Yeah, it's almost like you can choose.
- 17:20We've talked about this in podcast before, like if you want
- 17:24to splurge in an area that really makes a statement, you
- 17:27can have like a couple pieces that are really nice and kind of
- 17:31then decorate around that. So maybe it's like this alias
- 17:35looking or true antique real gold frames and then kind of
- 17:42find other frames that comlement that well to go with it.
- 17:46But they will definitely make a statement and and send the
- 17:51message of the style you're trying to create.
- 17:54Yeah. And I think when you walk in and
- 17:57you see like a table or this is actually on our piano of all of
- 18:02the family photos and especially I need to add more like heirloom
- 18:07photos, my grandparents and things like that.
- 18:10It just really gives that feel of this is the heart of the
- 18:13home. This is continuity.
- 18:16This is history, nostalgia. It gives you that feeling right
- 18:19as soon as you walk in when you see a table like.
- 18:21That Well, yeah, I've seen on your account both like as the
- 18:24welcome indoor home thing and in the piano, which is in a central
- 18:29spot in your home. It seems like you have
- 18:30collections of photos, so you're laying out right away.
- 18:34This is what's most important to us, and I think not even to
- 18:36people visiting, but to yourself.
- 18:39It really creates a feeling of home to to see your history and
- 18:43just your family every day. Yeah, I think.
- 18:48Too, you know, a lot of people have moved away from picture
- 18:52frames and, you know, real photographs and it's more
- 18:56digital and there's nothing wrong with that.
- 18:58But I love how this feels and looks and it's right there.
- 19:02And yeah, it's just, it's just really beautiful.
- 19:05I love it layered. Tactile, I think we have in the
- 19:09piano room some photo albums too.
- 19:13And I just don't think you can be a photo album, just sitting
- 19:16down and flipping through a photo album or.
- 19:19I love doing that too because my grandparents still have the
- 19:22actual albums in their house, so being able to like and they're
- 19:26just handy in a sitting room. So if you're kind of just
- 19:28instead of a coffee table book, it's looking through your family
- 19:31history a little bit, which is fun.
- 19:36And yeah, as a kid, we would always be flipping through them
- 19:40and we go home looking through them.
- 19:43Yeah. And it's just you can talk about
- 19:45memories that way. But also with frames, I was
- 19:48going to say that you can have multiple photos in that frame
- 19:53kind of behind each other and maybe swap other ones in
- 19:56throughout the year. Do you move yours around in the
- 19:58house? So I don't always.
- 20:00There's a few that I have that are seasonal that are Christmas
- 20:04photos and. You know, another I really like
- 20:08having photos taken in the fall because we have all these old
- 20:11trees in our neighborhood and that's a nice way to kind of put
- 20:15all the fall color into the frames and it feels seasonal
- 20:19like that. But I do have some that I swap
- 20:21out that are moments at Christmas, the kids with Santa,
- 20:25things like that. When something in the past
- 20:27couple photos that we've seen or rooms that we've seen in your
- 20:32home is there's all these little areas that transition throughout
- 20:37the season. So it's the same general setup
- 20:41and room, but you kind of just judge things a little to make it
- 20:44more seasonal, yeah. Yeah, I love decorating for the
- 20:48holidays and I decorate the children's rooms for the
- 20:52holidays and it all kind of ties in with their the color palette
- 20:57in their room. So it feels, it just kind of
- 20:59flows. It doesn't feel like staged or
- 21:02anything like that. It just kind of little pieces
- 21:05like the pillow, the needle point pillow here with the
- 21:07nutcrackers. It's just like tucked in a
- 21:10little wreath hung on the lamp. They're just little additions
- 21:13that you can add to what you already have going on.
- 21:16But I like how you add these little bows too.
- 21:20Do you like Hand? Or are you talking about on the
- 21:23Garland? Have this and on your lamp here.
- 21:27Yeah, so, so cute. The ones on the Garland I just
- 21:31hot glued. I bought this special ribbon and
- 21:34I waited till it was on sale. I can't remember the name of
- 21:36that ribbon. It's atrocious.
- 21:38I think it's from Neiman Marcus or something.
- 21:41Oi waited until it went on sale after Christmas and saved it for
- 21:44the next year. And I hot glued you know the bow
- 21:48so you lay it a secial way so that your front of your ribbon
- 21:51is showing 2 loops and then you put the loop around the middle
- 21:55for the bow. So it's actually not a tied bow
- 21:58it. Just just looks that way.
- 21:59So it's beautiful. Stay.
- 22:02Here. It's just so simple but.
- 22:04Yeah. And you've tied bows around
- 22:07little table lamps. That's the other through line
- 22:10I'm seeing a lot is your little table lamps.
- 22:12You have those? Yes, in a lot of places
- 22:15throughout the house. I love those lamps.
- 22:18So there's a couple different brands that I've bought them
- 22:20from, but I buy a lot from Amazon and I really feel like I
- 22:24could have 100 in my house. Yeah.
- 22:27Are these the battery powered? OK.
- 22:29Yeah, you just charge them and you can tuck them anywhere.
- 22:32Yeah. And if you want to add that
- 22:33warmth to a space, like you could put one here on the
- 22:37Mantel, you could put one on the bookshelf, You can put one on
- 22:41the table. I mean they just feel so cozy
- 22:43and warm. Yeah, look at that.
- 22:45Yeah. Like is this a coffee table
- 22:47where you put it on top? Yes.
- 22:48So this is on a coffee table, and it's a hard place to have a
- 22:52lamp, right? Because otherwise you'd have a
- 22:54cord. Yeah.
- 22:55Going. This is in the piano room on the
- 22:59kitchen island. And one thing you can do, they
- 23:03come with like, a kind of cream shade here.
- 23:07And I took the original shades off and you can switch them
- 23:12seasonally or for holidays. This red and green shade is from
- 23:16Misses Alice and so you can just swap the shade and it feels
- 23:20festive or fall. Yeah, that's a great tip for
- 23:25decorating seasonally. Or just, you know, if you don't
- 23:28want your home to feel stagnant, you know, you can always just
- 23:33swap out little lamp shades. Right.
- 23:35Yeah, even with just your regular lamp.
- 23:37Yeah, just change out the shade. Yeah, you can and I don't.
- 23:40Have to live with the one that came with it, right?
- 23:42Exactly. We always forget about that, but
- 23:46that's definitely an option. That's another way to act some
- 23:49kind of like texture and layering.
- 23:52My mom is like a hot glue queen and she would hot glue, you
- 23:56know, some like tassel trim or palm trim on the bottom of just
- 24:01like a basic. Yeah.
- 24:03And it's a great way to be creative.
- 24:04It upgrades. It elevates.
- 24:06It yeah, your home really speaks to your creativity and how
- 24:11you've brought, you know, every day into a magical arena.
- 24:17You know, you've just you've you've really Creativity can go
- 24:23really far in different directions.
- 24:25A lot of people think like creativity means I'm a painter,
- 24:29you know, and, and so they think they're not creative.
- 24:32But this is a really good example of how creativity can
- 24:36just be part of your everyday. Yeah.
- 24:38So anyone can do it and you can. I think people call it different
- 24:43things like romanticizing your life.
- 24:45Yeah, just making a special spot if it's where you have your
- 24:48morning coffee. Making me feel like really
- 24:51special and cozy. My parents used to say your home
- 24:55is your sanctuary, yes. And so you want to really make
- 24:58it a special place. And creating.
- 25:00A lot of time there. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:03Especially with your family and creating rooms that really serve
- 25:06your family and your guests. I like that you mentioned the
- 25:11piano room because, you know, art and music seem like
- 25:15something that is central to your home then and or like we
- 25:19want to createspace for that. Yeah.
- 25:21So why do you think millennials are suddenly drawn to more
- 25:25traditional decor? You know, I think we went
- 25:29through that period at the Millennial Grey.
- 25:31Everything was a little like cold and everything just felt
- 25:34boxed to me, like, OK, you're just going to, you know, buy
- 25:38this. This is how it looks.
- 25:39It's very like cold. Not a lot of personality, right?
- 25:42And I do think there's a nostalgic component.
- 25:46Like we talked about the house from the father of the Bride,
- 25:49right? Just wanting more personality in
- 25:53our environment, right? And a little bit more character
- 25:57in our spaces. I think there's a desire like
- 26:01kind of a yearning for that. And maybe it goes back to when
- 26:05we a time when we felt really cozy and protected and safe.
- 26:10It was probably with our some of our grandparents right in her
- 26:14grandparents home or something like that.
- 26:16And so I think it doesn't have to feel stale or old.
- 26:23It could just be something that makes you remember that time or
- 26:27that space. Maybe it's a needlepoint pillow.
- 26:29Maybe it's a your grandmother had a collection of China and
- 26:33you have it in your home now. Something that that makes you
- 26:38feel, I guess, something that reminds you of your story,
- 26:42right? You know, And I think that's
- 26:44what a lot of us are looking for in a way.
- 26:46Right. Well, for a while I think we
- 26:48were so focused on sameness and just blending in and getting the
- 26:51box store items because we didn't want to stand out in a
- 26:56way that made us vulnerable or like open to critique.
- 27:00Sure, But I think we've gotten more as we've gotten older or
- 27:05maybe our society is kind of becoming more accepting of just
- 27:10people being themselves. We've been more comfortable and
- 27:14and needing to to express ourselves more because we
- 27:18repressed that for so long with the.
- 27:20Expression, I mean, your interior, the way that you dress
- 27:23or the way that you right decorate your home is an
- 27:26expression of of you and your personality and what you like.
- 27:30And if it's a weird little collection, you know, my
- 27:33daughter and I love our La Boo boos.
- 27:35You have a little drawer in her cabinet.
- 27:38Where are the boobies live, you know?
- 27:41And it's just fine. It makes us happy and cute.
- 27:43It's that whimsy, you know, I think a lot of us are looking
- 27:46for a little whimsy in our life. Whimsy things that make you
- 27:50giggle. Yeah.
- 27:51Luboo boos are the new, are the Furbies of today.
- 27:55I always say, yeah, they'd like wake up in the middle of the
- 27:59night and start talking to you and you feel like we got to get
- 28:01rid of this thing. But Luboo boos don't do that, so
- 28:04it's not great. Ours are very well behaved,
- 28:07yeah. Well, always got to appreciate
- 28:09that. Yeah.
- 28:12And I really like to how just Speaking of breaking up
- 28:16different rooms in your house, a lot of people, I'm going to
- 28:21pivot, don't use their dining room a lot.
- 28:25And the dining room is something I do want to make sure to focus
- 28:28on because you really use the dining room for all different
- 28:34occasions. And so I kind of want to talk to
- 28:37you about your journey there of, you know, how you make it an
- 28:42intentional place that doesn't just collect dust.
- 28:45How did you select the furniture that was going to be central to
- 28:48it? Kind of What was your ethos
- 28:50behind the dining room? So a lot of people said, oh,
- 28:54well, this could be an office. This could be this when we first
- 28:58got the house. And no, it's the dining room.
- 29:00They're like, you'll love or use the dining room.
- 29:02Yeah. And I had this idea in my head
- 29:05that, you know, it's, it's a special place, right?
- 29:09When you come around the dining table, it's, you know, you're
- 29:12celebrating something. Maybe you're celebrating a
- 29:14birthday. You're celebrating a holiday.
- 29:16Yeah. And it's a, a place where you
- 29:18make special memories. And even if you have the
- 29:20neighbors over and it's the weekend and you're celebrating
- 29:24the weekend and enjoying some wine or something, I think it I
- 29:28think it should be used and it can be used.
- 29:30And then I'm hoping that someday when my kids look back, they
- 29:34remember that dining table as being kind of one of the hearts
- 29:39of our home, I should say, where we made a lot of family
- 29:43memories. And yeah, we, we, we use it a
- 29:47lot. This first photo, I believe
- 29:50that's Thanksgiving. And then the middle photo, I
- 29:54have my kids little Valentine's Day baskets set up ready to go.
- 30:00And so cute. This is like a little
- 30:03Valentine's party. We love celebrating in there.
- 30:06And you can decorate it, you know, I hang things from the
- 30:10chandelier and it's just a special.
- 30:12Place it looks like you cut out white paper hearts with like a
- 30:18like a scalloped tool and they're hanging from the
- 30:21chandelier. And then that's my jadeite
- 30:24collection. Yes.
- 30:26The plates, my mom and I went around collecting that from
- 30:31antique shops when I was little, and that was actually in my
- 30:35Playhouse. She let me, she let me have that
- 30:38in my Playhouse. And I don't remember ever
- 30:42breaking a piece. I was really careful with it.
- 30:45And so when we got this house, I called her and I said, do you
- 30:49still have that jadeite that we collected?
- 30:52I really want that. Yeah.
- 30:53And we use it a lot now. The little cups are, I think
- 30:59it's actually a pudding cup that those crystal cups, those are
- 31:02from Lakash here in town and I think they were like $30.00 for
- 31:08the entire set. That's amazing.
- 31:10The cash is a great, what would you say an antique store?
- 31:15It's like a collection of heirlooms from the past from
- 31:23like throughout Denver, and everything benefits the
- 31:27Children's Hospital so. Yeah, it's a great version of
- 31:30organization. Yeah, it's a nonprofit.
- 31:32So. So.
- 31:33I tied little bows around the cups and it just felt really
- 31:37coming in and special. And then I put a little
- 31:39Valentine cake in each one like a petty fork.
- 31:42How? Cute.
- 31:42Yeah, it was fun. Yeah, getting crystal Ware from
- 31:47an antique store or even a thrift store is a great move.
- 31:50Oh yeah, because you can find some great stuff.
- 31:54Silver like silver flatware collections.
- 31:57There you can get a whole set for not much.
- 32:01Every city has a version of that.
- 32:03And something that we should talk about too with collecting
- 32:07and layering is not everything has to be exactly matchy matchy.
- 32:11Like you can kind of mix and match as long as things are in
- 32:15the same color palette and and vibe.
- 32:19Yeah, I would say. Yeah, I think keeping things in
- 32:23in a certain like, color palette does help to make it feel
- 32:26cohesive and to kind of give it that purpose.
- 32:31Yeah, I really like layering. I think that's the key.
- 32:34My mom calls it feathering your home.
- 32:36Yeah, just slowly adding or feathering your nest.
- 32:40Yeah, feathering your nest. Feathering your nest.
- 32:42So just adding those little pieces over time, right?
- 32:45So that that'll be our new word. Instead of layering, we're just
- 32:49feathering our. Nest Yeah, if people are like,
- 32:51we're ready to take this photo, guys, and we're on a photo shoot
- 32:54set, we're feathering. Yeah, All right.
- 32:56Get out of here, love. To do, yeah.
- 32:59Yeah. So I feel, I feel like a lot of
- 33:03this layering conversation kind of bridges with maximalism.
- 33:08We have a lot of the same conversations with maximalism
- 33:12and how to create a collection that doesn't feel cluttered and
- 33:17it feels intentional still to you.
- 33:19Do you feel like there is a similarity between your style
- 33:23and maximalism? You know, the layering that I
- 33:26like and I like, you know, like I said, I love a trinket.
- 33:33I like the bookshelves to feel full and I like a lot of fabrics
- 33:37in a space, the slavery and maybe something on the table and
- 33:41upholstery. So I think there is a little bit
- 33:45of an overlap, but I think maximalism can be more eccentric
- 33:50too. I think you could go more modern
- 33:52with it and a lot of saturated color.
- 33:57And I think Grand Millennial, that style feels a little more
- 34:00sweet. There's like a little bit more
- 34:03softness to it maybe, I don't know.
- 34:06Do you think so? I.
- 34:07Think so, Yeah, maximalism is is just a little bit more over the
- 34:11top, but you could go way over the top with traditional styling
- 34:15and things. But but yeah, I definitely do
- 34:17see a bit of difference. I think maximalism is a blanket
- 34:21term to describe It could be a lot of different styles, a lot
- 34:26of feathering for sure, but it could be maximalist.
- 34:29There could be a maximalist version of a lot of different
- 34:31styles. That's whereas Grand Millennial
- 34:34is like a very specific style, but it does have a little bit of
- 34:38a maximalist approach with feathering and layering and
- 34:43bringing in all the things that make you feel great in life into
- 34:48one space. What is your approach?
- 34:52I mean, I know we talked about the trays, but with collecting
- 34:55so much to keep things still feeling cohesive, and I know
- 34:59you're switching things out for different seasons.
- 35:02It's not like everything's there at all times.
- 35:04Yeah, that definitely helps. Yeah.
- 35:06You know, so the home might like look slightly different in the
- 35:10fall. I love fall and the warmth and
- 35:12the texture there. And then I do a lot of florals
- 35:16and a spring. Yeah.
- 35:18But yeah, I think collect, keeping the collections to
- 35:21specific areas. One thing I really like is like
- 35:26a little cabinet, like the little corner cabinets or what
- 35:30do they call them, break fronts, the glass front.
- 35:33But they're in the corner. Yeah.
- 35:34I mean, I like the the quarter ones too, but they also have
- 35:38like. You know the glass cabinets.
- 35:41And I think those can be really nice to add some like family
- 35:45photos and little heirlooms. Like we have the bell that a
- 35:51ring bearer rung at our wedding on the shelf and, you know, like
- 35:55the toasting glasses, just like little things like that.
- 35:58And you can put the mall in one of those spaces and then it's
- 36:03not all throughout your house. It's kind of contained.
- 36:06Contained in that. Secial, yes, yeah.
- 36:09So that's usually what I try to do with.
- 36:12The collections, right? And we see, we do see a lot of
- 36:15color throughout your house and you've talked about how choosing
- 36:18a couple colors for each room can kind of keep it still
- 36:23feeling cohesive. But why do you think color is
- 36:26back in a big way? Because I think that's one of
- 36:28the biggest things that we're seeing in interior design right
- 36:33now is colors packed. Do you think it's just that
- 36:36swing from the grey? Yeah, maybe just like all.
- 36:39The rebellion towards the grey, yes, Yeah, it's all color.
- 36:43And I think what you were talking about people being more
- 36:45comfortable expressing themselves.
- 36:47Yeah. There's a creator.
- 36:49She's out of New York. And she will find things like on
- 36:52the street that people have thrown out.
- 36:55Wow. And she loves these really
- 36:56bright colors. OK.
- 36:57And it's just so her. Yeah, You know, I think that
- 37:01people are craving that personality in their decor
- 37:04again. You know, whether that's you
- 37:06like soft pastels like me or maybe you like a bold, bright
- 37:11color, you know, I think it's it's really fun to express
- 37:14yourself that way. Yeah, people are craving that.
- 37:17They really are. And you can use colors as a
- 37:20neutral, like in here we're using green as a neutral.
- 37:23Yes, Yeah. So.
- 37:24I feel like blue is a neutral. Yes, we did some antique Delft
- 37:29tile on our fireplace and. Yeah, I saw.
- 37:32That feels like a neutral. You know, I really don't feel
- 37:36like our kitchen has a lot of color in it, right?
- 37:38Just like the blue and white and cream.
- 37:40Yeah. And it feels very neutral.
- 37:43Well, your guest. Room is a great example of that
- 37:45too. We should show that it's very
- 37:49blue as a neutral, but you're also layering patterns in the.
- 37:53Wallpaper. So I like the the darker wood
- 37:59pieces kind of ground. They do the room and then the
- 38:02rest of it, even the bedding feels really airy and light and
- 38:06you have this blue and white that almost looks like clouds or
- 38:10the sky. There's a little bit of an
- 38:12equestrian theme I kind of wanted and English countryside
- 38:17feel to this room with the gingham and the Browns.
- 38:22You achieved it. Yeah, I love this that way.
- 38:25I love your little chair here with the Castor.
- 38:27Thank you. That's a new chair.
- 38:29See, that's a perfect. Example.
- 38:30It's where you brought in something that looks vintage,
- 38:33but it's new. Right.
- 38:34Yeah, right. And I really like just Speaking
- 38:40of your guest room, your ideas around making people feel
- 38:44welcome and like they don't always need to ask for things.
- 38:48I think that's something huge about hosting is giving people
- 38:52the tools that they need to thrive in your house without
- 38:54feeling like they're needy. So like you've included the
- 38:59Wi-Fi password and like the Netflix account passwords all
- 39:04framed on the bedside table. Yes.
- 39:06So this little frame has our Wi-Fi information.
- 39:09And I feel like that's like their first question, right?
- 39:12As soon as they get in and get settled.
- 39:14Yeah. And you can make these little
- 39:17designs on an app or a website called Canva and you can make it
- 39:23really cute and make it tie in with your, the rest of your
- 39:26space and decide the the size that you want based on the frame
- 39:30you have. And I think it's just like a
- 39:32nice little touch to have, like you said, the Netflix password,
- 39:35your Wi-Fi information. And then I always have some
- 39:41little guest slippers on the bed and the bathroom is stocked.
- 39:47That's a big thing. Because I feel like if somebody
- 39:49wakes up in the night with a headache or a stomach ache, if
- 39:52you have everything, they're ready to go for them.
- 39:55That's really helpful. They don't feel like they miss
- 39:57home. Like, oh, so home I would have
- 39:59my headache medicine or whatever, right?
- 40:02Yeah, right. They need some water for them.
- 40:05And do a carafe. That's Petra Palumbo.
- 40:08OK, does these hand painted carafes.
- 40:10They're so beautiful and just like a nice little touch.
- 40:15Yeah. And is this like a little ring
- 40:17dish over here? Yeah, yeah.
- 40:19So I have a little ring dish and then a coaster.
- 40:22I love it because, you know, people can be really hard.
- 40:26Yeah, on the wood surface of the town.
- 40:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:29And then another thing we have, which it's not in this picture,
- 40:33but a little luggage rack. Yeah, because so many people
- 40:37just put the suitcase on that. When I see that, I'm just like.
- 40:41That's like shoes on the floor. Yeah, yeah.
- 40:45So yeah, we don't want black Airport wheels.
- 40:49Scuffing on your white or. Whatever was on the airport
- 40:52floor, yeah, I don't know. No.
- 40:55So the yeah, the luggage rack is a good one to have.
- 40:58You just have it all set up ready for them.
- 41:00So they. Just I just think a tip, and I'm
- 41:03sorry if you disagree with this, but people just need to know
- 41:06keep your shoes off of the bed and keep your luggage off of the
- 41:10bed because you don't want some random person's germs in your
- 41:14house. So I'm sorry, that's just APSA
- 41:16from I think everybody would benefit.
- 41:18I think they would. You got to adopt this.
- 41:20So yeah, we just got to, we got to do that, but.
- 41:24Here next to the bed, the books with your floral arrangement,
- 41:29again, you're using them in your guest room and it creates height
- 41:33that creates warmth. And it just, that's an easy way
- 41:37to decorate, you know, in a room is adding some books and a vase
- 41:41with flowers. Yeah, we have.
- 41:44I, I was looking for lamps. We, we now have brass lamps on
- 41:48these tables as well, but the books are still there because I,
- 41:52I just think sometimes it's nice if somebody can't sleep and they
- 41:57haven't brought a book, they can kind of just, you know, read a
- 42:00few pages and it just feels inviting and like you say,
- 42:04playing with that height. So I have tall skinny brass
- 42:07lamps there. And then the flowers on the
- 42:10books kind of, I don't know, it makes a nice yeah difference in
- 42:14height because. The lamp doesn't take the whole.
- 42:16Right. It's really nice, skinny and
- 42:18small. And that's another tip for
- 42:20things not to feel cluttered is if everything's on the same
- 42:24surface, like at the same height, then it can start
- 42:26feeling cluttered. But if they're at different
- 42:28heights, then it takes your your brain doesn't see it as
- 42:32cluttered anymore. That's interesting.
- 42:34That's a good point. Just.
- 42:35In different places. So I think that's a great idea
- 42:38to put things on top of the books.
- 42:41Well, let's pivot slightly because we've talked a little
- 42:43bit about your kids spaces and something that I really like
- 42:49about them is that they don't feel plastic or temporary.
- 42:53And I think people struggle with that in their kids rooms because
- 42:58they want something that a kid can grow with.
- 43:01Yeah, so I didn't want to redecorate my kids rooms every
- 43:05three years, you know, and I think people start to think, oh,
- 43:09well, it's what the the child wants, just plastic.
- 43:13And I don't, I don't necessarily think that's true.
- 43:17We we talked about your home feeling like a sanctuary.
- 43:21And I think that children's rooms can feel like a sanctuary
- 43:25to them. Yeah, really comforting and and
- 43:28comfortable. And so this is my son Conrad's
- 43:32room. And we did the room and mostly
- 43:35Blues and Browns, but you can see you can still add some fun
- 43:40pieces like the pillows are playful.
- 43:42This was his room decorated for Christmas, and I tied the little
- 43:46velvet ribbons around the dogs on his light fixture.
- 43:50That is so cute. And then he has some fun things
- 43:55in his bookcase. You can see the little stuffed
- 43:58animals and books, little collections of things.
- 44:02His first birthday crown is in there.
- 44:05His little baby shoes, so cute. So I think it can still feel
- 44:10youthful and sweet. But it it's a room that we'll be
- 44:14able to grow with him and over here that it's actually a saddle
- 44:20holder, that metal bin. Oh, this round piece.
- 44:24Yes, cool. And there's stuffed animals in
- 44:28it now to keep them, you know, out of sight.
- 44:30He can dig them out and play with them.
- 44:32But over time, I was thinking as he gets older, maybe he can put
- 44:36his sweaters in that bin or his blankets, throws, things like
- 44:42that. So I really think that you can
- 44:45find pieces that that grow with with the children.
- 44:49And maybe he'll even use it in his house someday.
- 44:51Yeah. Absolutely.
- 44:53I love the wood tunes in that room.
- 44:55It's so beautiful with the blue and white.
- 44:58Yeah, it's really masculine, isn't it?
- 44:59Yeah. Well, the dark wood is very
- 45:02masculine. And then I just love the way you
- 45:05use wallpaper because it's not like a cutesy kids decal, right?
- 45:12It's very like a wallpaper that feels like a toddler, but it
- 45:18could also feel like a teenager, right, depending on how you
- 45:22decorate around it. Yeah.
- 45:23So we did the there's dogs kind of English looking hunting dogs
- 45:29maybe up on the top portion and then below the chair rail.
- 45:34We did. It's hard to see there, but it's
- 45:36actually a herring bone and it's kind of like a grass.
- 45:39It has a texture to it. It's kind of like a grass cloth
- 45:43and so yeah, it just added a lot of personality to his space, I
- 45:46think. When I see the hunting dogs in
- 45:49the pattern of the wallpaper as well.
- 45:52Yeah. So that's kind of a great way to
- 45:54have a pattern that's masculine. I love that you put a chandelier
- 45:59in your son's room. Yeah.
- 46:01You know, a lot of times we have, like, the recessed lights
- 46:06or, you know, and it's like, well, you can put a chandelier
- 46:10in a bedroom. It doesn't have to be just in in
- 46:13your dining room or your entrance hall.
- 46:15Right, and I think if you're worried about kids doing things
- 46:20to something or damaging from the yes, we did have this
- 46:23reinforced just in case 2 little boys we.
- 46:25Just don't know what they're going.
- 46:26To happen just doing on the chandelier.
- 46:30I think that your walls I should knock on wood, Yeah.
- 46:35Somewhere are. Pretty safe, yeah.
- 46:37You know, light fixtures, draperies, any artwork that you
- 46:43put on on the walls are pretty safe around kids.
- 46:46It's more they're betting, you know, that they could damage.
- 46:50Or the carpet. Oh my goodness, the carpet.
- 46:53For sure. So I think as long as you are
- 46:59focusing on the walls, you can make it feel more elevated by,
- 47:02you know, doing this is an antique.
- 47:05That lithograph in the corner, the painting hanging over his
- 47:09bed is an old one that my dad had in his office a long time
- 47:13ago. So it makes it feel really
- 47:15elevated. But it's still safe on the walls
- 47:18and on the ceiling. And then just watch out for, I
- 47:22would say the carpet and your bedding.
- 47:25Make sure it's washable bedding. And just get your carpets
- 47:28cleaned over time and have a have a plan there.
- 47:32Oh yeah, we have a carpet cleaner.
- 47:33Yeah, Ready to go. It's us again.
- 47:38Yeah. I love the big cabinet.
- 47:42You know, some people inherit like a China cabinet and they're
- 47:45like, I don't really want to put that in my dining room or they
- 47:48may not have the space. This would be a great idea to
- 47:51take a China cabinet and turn it into a bookcase.
- 47:55Best storage for kids room because you can put their books
- 47:58up there. Like I said, little collections
- 48:00of things. Stuffies up on top and then in
- 48:04the cabinets on the bottom. I have baskets on shelves so his
- 48:10little cars go in there, his little magnet tiles puzzles.
- 48:14So they're all organized by what it.
- 48:15Is in there, yeah. I mean, it holds a lot.
- 48:18That's a great idea to use it a lot of.
- 48:21People don't know what to do with their antique cabinets or
- 48:25the China. Cabinets, they're like, I don't
- 48:27know what I wanted, you know, they may not know where to put.
- 48:30Yeah, this is a great option. And then it gives them places
- 48:34like we were talking about earlier to put some of the
- 48:36things that you know he plays with.
- 48:39He knows when you say clean up your room, he knows where to put
- 48:42the things and those things go for.
- 48:44Him too, because he's he feels accomplished, like he's done
- 48:46something, because he knows where things go.
- 48:49Yes, it's great. Yeah, we do the little reward
- 48:51jar system so they can add their little tokens and save for
- 48:57something. But yeah, I think, I think
- 48:59there's a lot of storage options with a big cabinet or bookcase
- 49:03like that. And like you were talking about,
- 49:05that can really grow with them, you know?
- 49:09Because he may take that away one day.
- 49:11Yeah, you know, to his home. We talk about transformer
- 49:15furniture or whatever. Chameleon Furniture.
- 49:18That furniture that can go in different rooms of the house.
- 49:20Yeah, it doesn't. You know, like we're saying, a
- 49:22China cabinet doesn't have to go in a dining room.
- 49:24That can go in a bedroom just like we've done here.
- 49:27We have a this is a dresser that we're using as Yeah, that's.
- 49:30Ascites. Yeah, Well, and it's hard, I
- 49:34guess, working for a furniture company and everything's divvied
- 49:38up into, like, bookcases. They're under the office
- 49:41category. But like, they don't, Yeah, they
- 49:44don't have to be in an office. They could be, yeah, really.
- 49:48Anyway, they could be in your bathroom and be somewhere that
- 49:51you put all of your beauty products, you know?
- 49:53And little canisters having everything like decanted nicely,
- 49:57that would be really pretty. That would be another thing I
- 49:59like in children's rooms are is like a big trunk or chest.
- 50:05And my daughter used it again, kind of like him, like with the
- 50:07stuffies. And then now she has like a
- 50:10little poof and she likes to color and draw and do like her
- 50:15little crafts on it. And again, I think someday,
- 50:17eventually it'll be sweaters and blankets and things like that.
- 50:21Yeah. But something I like about this
- 50:24is it looks like you've created safe spaces for them and they
- 50:27probably feel good about welcoming their friends into
- 50:30their rooms. And it's a place for them to be
- 50:33creative with their school friends.
- 50:36And now that school's back in session, just like having a
- 50:39place that you can entertain your kids, friends as well.
- 50:42Yeah, I always want it to feel cozy, you know, I don't want it
- 50:45to feel too precious, like they can't flop on the bed if they
- 50:48want. Or, you know, take some coloring
- 50:52up and color on the floor or something.
- 50:54Yeah, you know, not on the. Floor.
- 50:55Yeah. But like, you can, you can, you
- 50:59know, color in a coloring book on the floor without being,
- 51:02like, yelling at your friend because they're getting too
- 51:05close to. Yeah.
- 51:07It's like we still have a relaxed vibe in this house even
- 51:10though we have meant to be. Homes are meant to be lived in
- 51:13you. Know exactly too yeah so many
- 51:15people say I can't have nice things but I think you're
- 51:18showing that you can and it can still be lived in yeah and and
- 51:21the. Children grow up that way.
- 51:23They're used to it, so they know how to treat, you know, their
- 51:27surroundings. Right.
- 51:28Yeah. And I think when it's not,
- 51:30people used to be shocked if I would give my daughter like
- 51:33little real tea sets to play with.
- 51:38But I think when they're used to it, it's not something different
- 51:42and they don't go to it and, you know, bang it on the floor or
- 51:45something. They kind of are used to
- 51:46handling it and they know just got to be careful with that.
- 51:49And yeah, like you did with your dishes, the.
- 51:52Oh yeah, the Jada. Yeah, you're very careful with
- 51:54it. You knew it was special and now
- 51:57it's in your adult. Home.
- 51:58Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:58From the Playhouse to the home. To the real house, just.
- 52:01Like what you're saying, there's all these things that you have
- 52:03taken from your childhood and that they you're setting your
- 52:06kids up to do the same. And it is good to teach them
- 52:10that there are certain things that you should be careful with
- 52:15and other things that you don't have to worry about as much, you
- 52:18know? But like, there are sacred
- 52:20things in life to just be like, oh, this is nice, you know?
- 52:24And it doesn't mean we have to keep it away and never use it,
- 52:26but just treat it with care. Right.
- 52:28And it's kind of sustainable, right?
- 52:30A lot of this, you know, going antiquing, adding antique
- 52:35touches to your space is really sustainable.
- 52:38You know, instead of buying tons of plastic for your children,
- 52:41you know, yeah, they can learn to to play with a real tea
- 52:45setter or something that's an antique.
- 52:48And the quality furniture that you have, you know will last for
- 52:52many years. Yeah, nice.
- 52:54Not twice. There you go.
- 52:56Yeah, a lot of. People to like really look at
- 53:01our kids rooms, you know, and, and invest in those you know you
- 53:07have and it's absolutely beautiful and it is sustainable
- 53:10and they will have it for a very long time so.
- 53:15Yeah, when people get intimidated by buying a piece
- 53:18that's going to last a long time because they're like, how do I
- 53:21even, you know, make that happen?
- 53:25Like where do I even start? It gets to be like decision
- 53:27overwhelm to a point. But I think people just need to
- 53:31remember that a lot of times the timeless basics that are just
- 53:34good quality, that's all you need to look for.
- 53:37What do you like now? And that will transition with
- 53:40your style as time goes on, so. Right.
- 53:43I mean, I think the guest room furniture is a good example of
- 53:47that. You could easily change that
- 53:49bedding, you could change everything around it and it
- 53:51could become something different.
- 53:53But it's just, you know, like a good basic, good solid basic
- 53:57that we could put in really any bedroom.
- 53:59Same with your dining room. You know, the dining table is a
- 54:02good solid basic that you can have multiple holiday looks
- 54:06throughout the year around and it's still it complements all of
- 54:09those different aesthetics well. Totally.
- 54:11It's your base. Yeah, but yeah.
- 54:15So do you feel like comfort is the new luxury or how do you,
- 54:21how do you think comfort is the new luxury?
- 54:25Because I feel like you're going to say yes.
- 54:27What is the new luxury? Yeah.
- 54:30I think, you know, we were talking about sustainability a
- 54:32little bit and having a, a space that's, you know, you've like
- 54:37curated, you've feathered your home and it really shows your
- 54:40personality. And I think that's kind of
- 54:43something that I see happening a lot lately, people talking about
- 54:47that and how to to give a space like its own personality, its
- 54:53own character, whether it's color or some collections
- 54:58they've curated or some heirlooms they have.
- 55:01That's what I see. That's what I've noticed, you
- 55:03know, just that lived in space with a lot of personality.
- 55:08Right. It makes you comfortable, makes
- 55:11your guests comfortable knowing like who you are, but it also
- 55:16gives you a place to be where you don't feel like you need to
- 55:19leave. Like I can stay in the comfort
- 55:21of home and feel like I have what I need on most days.
- 55:24Like everybody needs that third space once in a while.
- 55:27But but I think having your home ready to welcome in your life
- 55:31and to live your life in is comfort.
- 55:34Don't you think people are hosting a little bit more?
- 55:36Yeah, I. Definitely.
- 55:38Think people are hosting more, you know, having dinner at home
- 55:42and I almost wonder if it's I don't know if anybody in your
- 55:47circle or maybe you have gotten into sourdough and things like.
- 55:51That. Yeah, I see people are like
- 55:54making these custom coffees at home and things.
- 55:57I feel like people are really getting into that and inviting
- 56:00people in, like let's grab a coffee and then we'll go on a
- 56:03walk together or. They're just celebrating life,
- 56:06yes, and just, you know, enjoying their friends.
- 56:09Gives you a sense of accomplishment.
- 56:10It speaks to the creativity that you uniquely have when you're
- 56:14able to create that treat for yourself.
- 56:17I know. Yeah, a lot of lot of sourdough
- 56:20in my circle. For sure.
- 56:24It's great. Yeah.
- 56:24It's like, it's great. Yeah.
- 56:26Yeah. And.
- 56:27Maybe, too, you know, during the pandemic, nobody could come to
- 56:31your house. I mean, yeah, they could.
- 56:33But most people were off in their homes.
- 56:35And so now we're just like, you know what?
- 56:37I want to have my friends over. I want to just have tea.
- 56:40And I want to, I have that in my dining room, so.
- 56:44I mean, like those special moments, yeah.
- 56:46I think that's a luxury in and of itself.
- 56:49It's creating special moments. That's right, 2026 should be all
- 56:53about special moments and using your dining room.
- 56:57Yeah, yeah. Maybe so or whatever space that
- 57:00you don't use enough or or China or pieces you don't use enough
- 57:04the. China bring out to go.
- 57:07It doesn't need to just come out once a year.
- 57:08Yeah, bring it out to eat a sandwich.
- 57:10On you know, I was recently at a lunch and someone said she was
- 57:14talking about using her silver, the silver flatware that she had
- 57:18gotten from her grandmother or something.
- 57:20And I said, but isn't it such a pain to clean, you know?
- 57:23And she said I just throw it in the dishwasher.
- 57:26Ohh wow. She said.
- 57:26I think cleaned. Up.
- 57:28She is my hero. Yeah, she's like.
- 57:30You know I want to. Use it.
- 57:31It makes me think of my grandmother, and I'm gonna throw
- 57:33it in the dish. Yeah, because that's what works
- 57:36with my life. And I'm not going to be so
- 57:37precious with it because then I'll never use it.
- 57:40Yeah, I think that's great. No, me too.
- 57:42And just like, kind of creating, like, what are the things that
- 57:48people can look forward to? Like almost like an activity
- 57:51when people come to your house. I think you did a great job.
- 57:54And a lot of those photos of just having a theme and
- 57:57something people can connect to. One of my things to this year is
- 58:00asking better questions. So yeah, just like creating a
- 58:05space for people to connect is. Great.
- 58:08I like that. There's those like or like
- 58:11little cards that have the questions right on it you can
- 58:14put out on the table and like people can go through with glass
- 58:18of wine or something or mahjong. A lot of people are playing
- 58:20bridge and. Mahjong.
- 58:22I've seen that game, yeah. Games are a great way to
- 58:25connect, and we've talked a little bit about just creating a
- 58:29space. When you invite people to your
- 58:31home, instead of impressing them, focus more on welcoming
- 58:35them. Yeah, I think that's.
- 58:36A huge part of it. Yeah, because then people are
- 58:39going to feel comfortable to relax and have good conversation
- 58:43and connect and make memories instead of being like, what can
- 58:46I touch and what can't? Yeah, you know, so.
- 58:50You've done a really good job of creating this beautiful
- 58:53environment, but it's also very warm and welcoming.
- 58:57It's not. It's not standoffish.
- 59:00So one of our favorite ways to close out conversations is just
- 59:05rapid fire, just quick questions and you give a quick yes or no
- 59:11answer. So floral sofas, are they
- 59:15timeless or risky? Timeless, timeless Mario Buada
- 59:19chin's like, I love that vibe, OK.
- 59:23Skirted sinks yes or no? 100% I love a skirted sink.
- 59:27Yeah, exactly like a nice stripe.
- 59:31Exactly like a nice stripe though.
- 59:34Or a gingham. It's so nice to add such a nice
- 59:37softness to a space. Can hide things?
- 59:39Can all these spaces antiques splurge or save?
- 59:46Both, I think, I think you can go both if maybe you find like a
- 59:50nice like 4 poster bed that's a really great piece and it's a
- 59:54little spendy, but that's well worth it maybe.
- 59:57But also one thing that my husband and I have done, we look
- 1:00:01for antique auctions that they market to antique shops.
- 1:00:06So the prices are fantastic, right, because they have to mark
- 1:00:11it up to sell anyway. One of.
- 1:00:14Our favorite things to buy is artwork at an antique auction
- 1:00:18like that. One of my husband's favorite
- 1:00:20pieces is this oil painting of Marseille.
- 1:00:23And it was right after we had gone there and we found it at
- 1:00:26this auction. It's meant to be, I want to say
- 1:00:28it was $150.00. This giant gilt frame, like,
- 1:00:32beautiful. It's a great point.
- 1:00:35Yeah. So save and splurge.
- 1:00:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:00:38Pattern mixing? Is there a rule you swear by?
- 1:00:42I think as long as it's in that same color palette, you can
- 1:00:45really go crazy. Do like a stripe, do a gingham
- 1:00:49or a check a floral. As long as it's in the same
- 1:00:53color palettes, it looks really nice.
- 1:00:55OK. What's 1 design element every
- 1:00:58home needs? Oh my.
- 1:00:59Goodness, I would say something floral, but but I would say, you
- 1:01:07know, a nice rug, yeah, is really great.
- 1:01:10That's a great place to start, I think.
- 1:01:12Truly. Literally.
- 1:01:14Grounds things, yeah. Yeah, we have some nice rugs and
- 1:01:18the rest of our furniture, like some of the pieces that need to
- 1:01:21be upholstered, they kind of, you know, you don't really
- 1:01:25notice it as much because you have a great rug.
- 1:01:28Like a piece of art. Yeah, sets the stage.
- 1:01:30Yeah, art. Also, is 1 art a great rug
- 1:01:33right? Just knowing where to save and
- 1:01:36where to splurge. Yeah, well, it's been so fun
- 1:01:39talking to you today. I think we've gotten so many
- 1:01:41good takeaways. There's something for everyone
- 1:01:45in this conversation about how to make their house a home and a
- 1:01:49place that they love, so we're just really glad that you were
- 1:01:53here to. Contribute for having me.
- 1:01:55I'm happy to be here, it's been so fun.
- 1:01:57Where can people find you going? Forward I'm on Instagram
- 1:02:01Brittany Pillard and also on TikTok.
- 1:02:03I'm just kind of starting to experiment with TikTok a little
- 1:02:06bit, aren't we? All yeah, it's a never ending
- 1:02:10experiment. Yeah, it's a very addictive,
- 1:02:13though. I find myself getting lost on
- 1:02:15there more than anywhere else. Yeah, yeah, same in Pinterest.
- 1:02:20Pinterest yeah, that definitely well can take some space, but
- 1:02:25you're good at incorporating your own style and still, yeah,
- 1:02:29not just making it overly Pinteresty yeah, I.
- 1:02:33Think so? Well, I can't wait to see your
- 1:02:34mud room that you're designing. Yeah, we'll have to.
- 1:02:38Yeah. Yeah, we'll have.
- 1:02:39To see photos in the future, do a little follow up.
- 1:02:43The piano room with the re upholstered chairs that's on the
- 1:02:47list. My husband said I can't go
- 1:02:49another Christmas with the same chandelier and UN upholstered
- 1:02:54chairs. So I'm I'm on a time so.
- 1:02:56I get to see that, yes. Good.
- 1:02:59That's great he gave you an assignment.
- 1:03:01Yeah, very specific. I have a timeline.
- 1:03:03Yeah, that's I kind of like that with creativity.
- 1:03:06I need a timeline and an assignment.
- 1:03:09As a Pisces, I can kind of just kind of be like a little dreamy.
- 1:03:13Like I had these swatches of fabric.
- 1:03:17Yeah. Laid out on the chairs that
- 1:03:19needed upholstered. Yeah.
- 1:03:20For months. Yeah.
- 1:03:22And I just kind of forgot about it.
- 1:03:23I was just like, oh, it's just how it is now, you know?
- 1:03:26And my husband, he's a Virgo. Yeah.
- 1:03:28That really stresses him out. So like, the dreaminess is kind
- 1:03:32of he's like, we need a concrete date.
- 1:03:34Let's. Let's work on this.
- 1:03:36Yeah. I'm with you.
- 1:03:37I'm a Pisces too. I need guard reels or else I
- 1:03:40could just. Yeah, hopefully I just, that's
- 1:03:43my weakness is getting lost in dreamland.
- 1:03:45You know, I'm just, my imagination is too colorful.
- 1:03:50Yeah. Which I'm sure you can relate
- 1:03:52to. Yeah.
- 1:03:54Again, so glad you were here and so glad everybody got to get
- 1:03:57this wisdom from our great grand millennial conversation.
- 1:04:03Thank you for having me. Yeah.
- 1:04:05Appreciate it. See everybody next time.
