- 1:51We're on episode four, and again, this is
- 1:53a Tuesday, and welcome once again to the
- 1:55ever-popular inspirations for your life show.
- 1:58I am John C.
- 2:00Morley.
- 2:01I am a serial entrepreneur.
- 2:02I'm an engineer, marketing specialist, video producer, podcast
- 2:06host, coach, keynote speaker, graduate student at Montclair
- 2:11State University, passionate lifelong learner, and so grateful
- 2:15now to be a published author.
- 2:18Our master weekly topic is become someone your
- 2:21future self can depend on.
- 2:22And today I'm getting into something very few
- 2:28of us are not going to face, which
- 2:31is everybody.
- 2:32What do you do when every choice feels
- 2:35wrong?
- 2:37You've researched it, you thought about it, you
- 2:40talk to people about it, you run through
- 2:42the possibilities again and again and again, and
- 2:45you still are thinking, I don't know what
- 2:47the right answer is.
- 2:49Here's the first thing to do.
- 2:51Understand sometimes there isn't a perfect answer.
- 2:55There's only the perfect decision you can make
- 2:57with the information you have at hand.
- 3:00Experience the judgment and circumstances you have right
- 3:03now.
- 3:04That's what we're unpacking today.
- 3:07Except that the same things are not the
- 3:11same.
- 3:12And some answers will take time.
- 3:15Not every problem needs solving immediately.
- 3:17New information needs to surface.
- 3:20Emotions need to settle.
- 3:22Sometimes you just need distance to see things
- 3:26a little differently and gain a little different
- 3:29perspective.
- 3:30Stop demanding certainty before deciding if you require
- 3:34100% certainty.
- 3:36You may spend your life waiting.
- 3:39Strong decision makers know when they have enough
- 3:41information to move responsibly.
- 3:44I think that's the key.
- 3:45Knowing when you have that.
- 3:49I have some RO water here too, by
- 3:50the way, guys, with some fresh lemon.
- 3:52Know what information actually matters.
- 3:55More information isn't automatically better information.
- 3:58Ask what facts could actually change your decision.
- 4:03Separate evidence from emotion.
- 4:07I think that's something, again, that a lot
- 4:09of people in life, I think they miss
- 4:11it.
- 4:11I don't think they mean to miss it,
- 4:13but they get stuck in this doldrum of
- 4:18confusion.
- 4:20Feelings matter, guys, but they aren't interchangeable with
- 4:24evidence.
- 4:26Know which one you're working with from the
- 4:30get-go.
- 4:31Don't confuse confidence with correctness.
- 4:35Somebody can sound certain and still be 100
- 4:40% wrong.
- 4:42That includes each one of us.
- 4:45Confidence is a feeling.
- 4:49Correctness requires evidence.
- 4:52I think that's important for all of us
- 4:57to realize.
- 5:00Confidence is a feeling.
- 5:03Correctness requires evidence.
- 5:06Look beyond the obvious answer.
- 5:11Ask whether you're choosing something because it's genuinely
- 5:15strongest or simply the easiest to see.
- 5:19Ask what you may be missing.
- 5:22This is one of my favorite questions.
- 5:25It creates room for a level of curiosity,
- 5:29another option, unconsidered information, a hidden assumption, perhaps.
- 5:35But do you greet these things with an
- 5:41open heart and open spirit?
- 5:44Or do you say, you know what, I'm
- 5:47going to get what I want, and if
- 5:49something's in my way, I'm just going to
- 5:50knock it aside.
- 5:51But I'm not going to learn the lessons.
- 5:52You've got to learn the lesson.
- 5:58You've got to learn the lesson.
- 6:00If you don't learn the lesson, I think
- 6:02that's a very, very big problem.
- 6:11That's important.
- 6:17I think some people just don't get it
- 6:20because they don't want to get it.
- 6:28That's the trick.
- 6:29It's not that they can't, it's that they
- 6:31don't want to.
- 6:35That's a very, how can I say, important
- 6:41thing to acknowledge and be aware of, guys.
- 6:47Consider consequences beyond today.
- 6:51Some decisions feel great today and become expensive,
- 6:55unfortunately, tomorrow.
- 6:57Others are uncomfortable now and pay off later.
- 7:01Stop letting urgency destroy judgment.
- 7:03You do it subconsciously.
- 7:06You don't even realize you're doing it.
- 7:08Urgency pushes us toward the fastest answer instead
- 7:12of the strongest one.
- 7:14Ask whether the situation truly requires speed or
- 7:18whether urgency is being used to influence you.
- 7:22Give complex decisions enough thought.
- 7:25Slow down.
- 7:27There is no race.
- 7:29When we go too fast, not only do
- 7:32we miss things, but I think we miss
- 7:35the whole point.
- 7:38We miss the concept of why we're here.
- 7:43We miss intentionalism.
- 7:46Write down your options, folks.
- 7:48Examine the consequences.
- 7:51Identify what you know and don't stop.
- 7:56Thinking isn't procrastination, okay?
- 7:59When the decision deserves it, know when more
- 8:01research stops helping you.
- 8:04You can research forever, okay?
- 8:07Eventually, the 10th article or a 50th opinion
- 8:10stops producing clarity and starts producing noise.
- 8:14Know when you have enough.
- 8:17Seek perspectives that challenge you.
- 8:20Find someone who will respectively push back on
- 8:24your thinking and ask what weakness they see
- 8:27in your plan.
- 8:29That takes some strategy, guys.
- 8:33I think that's an important piece for us
- 8:35to understand and to, I'm going to say,
- 8:39embrace.
- 8:45Okay, that's an important thing.
- 8:47What I want you to do, ladies and
- 8:49gentlemen, is I want you to separate preference
- 8:51from fact.
- 8:53Can you do that?
- 8:53I don't like this and this doesn't work.
- 9:00So, one is an opinion and one is
- 9:02a fact.
- 9:04I like vanilla ice cream, okay?
- 9:09Or somebody might say something like, you know,
- 9:15this ice cream cone melts before I can
- 9:20get halfway through it.
- 9:24One is one thing, right?
- 9:27And the other is something else.
- 9:31So, we have to separate fact from opinion.
- 9:35And they're different statements.
- 9:37Understanding that distinction improves judgment.
- 9:41Test assumptions before trusting them.
- 9:44Every decision rests on assumptions.
- 9:47Ask which ones your decision depends on and
- 9:51whether you can test them.
- 9:53Don't make permanent decisions from temporary emotion.
- 9:57Anger, fear, and excitement all distort judgment.
- 10:01Give strong emotions time to settle before they
- 10:05make lasting decisions.
- 10:06Look for second order consequences.
- 10:10And I think sometimes when we don't see
- 10:12the consequence right up front, we just don't
- 10:16take time to move forward, okay?
- 10:20We don't take time to move forward.
- 10:22Don't stop at this.
- 10:25What happens if I do this?
- 10:29Well, it doesn't give an invitation to stop.
- 10:32Ask, and then what happens next?
- 10:36What happens next?
- 10:37Ask, and then what happens next?
- 10:40A decision can solve one problem while creating
- 10:43three more.
- 10:45So, I said before, guys, just because we
- 10:47can doesn't mean we should, all right?
- 10:51I think that's an important piece for us
- 10:56to understand, okay?
- 11:00If we understand that piece, then we can
- 11:03say, wait a minute, this is making sense
- 11:05to me, okay?
- 11:07But we have to embrace what that is.
- 11:12Let's just think for a moment, okay, about
- 11:17some situations, some opportunities.
- 11:20But let's for one moment, why don't we
- 11:22think about where we're going, okay?
- 11:31Where we're going, where are we going?
- 11:40That's the real big question, where are we
- 11:44going?
- 11:44Consider who else will be affected by your
- 11:48decision or decisions.
- 11:50You see, your choices ripple to employees.
- 11:53They ripple to clients, colleagues, and even your
- 11:57family and friends.
- 11:59You can't make everyone happy all the time.
- 12:02But responsible judgment accounts for them, right?
- 12:12Many people I know don't wanna take accountability,
- 12:16okay?
- 12:19They don't wanna take accountability.
- 12:22I think that's an important piece for us
- 12:24to acknowledge.
- 12:37Acknowledge, let uncertainty make you more thoughtful.
- 12:45Use it to ask stronger questions and examine
- 12:49more angles rather than letting it paralyze you.
- 12:54Stop forcing every situation into simple categories.
- 12:58Opportunity can be exciting and risky at the
- 13:01same time.
- 13:01A decision can be necessary and uncomfortable.
- 13:03I said we had to practice getting comfortable
- 13:08being uncomfortable.
- 13:16That's an important piece, very important to
- 13:26understand the perspective, okay?
- 13:33It's important to understand the perspective.
- 13:40Mature judgment unfortunately holds complexity, it does.
- 13:47Decide based on what you know now.
- 13:50You don't get tomorrow's information today.
- 13:53Make the strongest decision available with what you
- 13:56currently have.
- 13:57Leave the room to revise when a facts
- 14:01set changes.
- 14:04A decision doesn't have to become part of
- 14:06your identity, no.
- 14:12Re-evaluating when facts change is an inconsistency.
- 14:17It's responsiveness.
- 14:19Learn from decisions that missed.
- 14:22Everyone makes some.
- 14:24Ask what it taught you.
- 14:26Incomplete information, a wrong assumption, an ignored warning
- 14:30sign.
- 14:31Don't confuse changing your mind with weakness.
- 14:35Sometimes, refusing to change your mind is the
- 14:39weaker choice.
- 14:41If evidence changes your thinking, should that change
- 14:46you too?
- 14:48Build judgment through some careful discerning reflection.
- 14:55Experience alone, guys, doesn't guarantee wisdom.
- 15:00You can repeat the same mistake for 20
- 15:02years.
- 15:03Reflection turns experience into learning.
- 15:06Notice the patterns before reacting.
- 15:09One event can be an exception.
- 15:12Repeat events may be a pattern.
- 15:16Learn to tell the difference before making a
- 15:19major decision.
- 15:21Think beyond the immediate reward.
- 15:24The quick money, the easy answer, the instant
- 15:27approval.
- 15:28Ask what that reward costs later, because it's
- 15:31going to have a price, and it might
- 15:33not be just money.
- 15:35The smaller immediate reward sometimes creates the larger
- 15:41future return.
- 15:43Make decisions your future self can respect.
- 15:47A year from now, could you respect the
- 15:50process even if you don't know the outcome?
- 15:53I'm just saying.
- 15:56Did you gather the facts, think carefully, and
- 15:59act on what mattered?
- 16:04Wisdom often begins with better questions.
- 16:08Instead of which option is easiest, let's ask
- 16:12which option moves me toward where I actually
- 16:15want to go.
- 16:17Better questions change our decisions.
- 16:20Strong judgment grows through experience.
- 16:26Every thoughtful decision adds something you recognize.
- 16:33What is it?
- 16:35It's patterns.
- 16:37And the faster we do this, we learn
- 16:40which warning signs actually matter from us.
- 16:44Don't expect perfect judgment overnight.
- 16:47It's not going to happen.
- 16:48Develop it.
- 16:49You were not born with it.
- 16:51You need to learn it.
- 16:52You need to embrace it.
- 16:55You need to experience it.
- 16:58Learn to decide well without knowing everything.
- 17:01You'll never know everything.
- 17:03Predict every consequence or eliminate every risk.
- 17:06The goal isn't omniscience.
- 17:09It's judgment.
- 17:11Gather what matters.
- 17:13Challenge your assumptions.
- 17:15Control what you can and think beyond today.
- 17:19Then make the strongest decision available to you.
- 17:25Do you make decisions just because somebody else
- 17:28said you have to do this or you
- 17:30have a real reason for your decision?
- 17:35Is it linked to a core value of
- 17:37yours or no?
- 17:39That's really the question that I have for
- 17:41you.
- 17:43If we can become aware, then
- 17:55our perspective can change.
- 18:09I think these are important things to know.
- 18:14Does that make sense?
- 18:18Hopefully this makes sense to you.
- 18:24I think sometimes people don't understand that.
- 18:34Does that make sense to you?
- 18:44I'm just asking.
- 18:51Can you change your perspective tomorrow?
- 18:53Sure.
- 19:01That's important.
- 19:10I think sometimes we push ahead too fast
- 19:23and that causes a problem with us.
- 19:34That's a big problem and that's hard.
- 19:45Hard for us to understand, for hard for
- 19:47us to embrace.
- 19:57Does that make sense?
- 19:59Or does it just give you a confusion?
- 20:14I think sometimes out of desperation, we do
- 20:21one thing but we get confused because we
- 20:29keep going in a loop and a loop
- 20:33is something we don't necessarily understand but we
- 20:40keep going in the loop.
- 20:41And when we're in the loop, we suddenly
- 20:45can't understand.
- 20:51That's something I believe that a lot of
- 20:53people will never relate to.
- 21:06I think that's an important piece that many
- 21:09people don't understand but I know a lot
- 21:15of people just don't get it but
- 21:29it makes sense.
- 21:39That's the important part.
- 21:48And when we think about it more, it
- 21:50helps us to get a different perspective.
- 21:54But for some reason, we don't see that
- 21:59answer because we're not open to it.
- 22:06The answer's there all the time.
- 22:10So guys, as I get ready to close
- 22:12out today's show, I want you to understand
- 22:17a few things.
- 22:17So when every choice feels wrong, because I
- 22:20know you're gonna get this, don't panic.
- 22:25Simply because the perfect answer isn't visible or
- 22:30accessible to you right at the moment.
- 22:37That's a real important thing for us to
- 22:40understand.
- 22:42What I want you to do is to
- 22:44slow down and be conscious of the decisions
- 22:49that you're actually making.
- 22:54Be conscious of it.
- 22:57Ask better questions.
- 22:59I said this to you.
- 23:01If you ask better questions, you're gonna get
- 23:03better answers.
- 23:08If you ask better questions, you will get
- 23:10better answers.
- 23:16But a lot of people just fire off
- 23:18a question because they think that's the right
- 23:21way, but it's not.
- 23:24Separate what you know from what you feel,
- 23:29right?
- 23:30You never make a decision in business on
- 23:32your emotions.
- 23:33You have to look at the logic.
- 23:35Separate the facts from the opinions and the
- 23:39assumptions.
- 23:41Look beyond the first consequence.
- 23:45Ask, who else is gonna be affected by
- 23:48this?
- 23:50Think about what happens next and eventually decide
- 23:55because indecision has consequences too.
- 23:58There are times, ladies and gentlemen, when waiting
- 24:02is wise, but there are also times when
- 24:05waiting becomes another choice with its own costs
- 24:08associated to it.
- 24:12Just ponder and think about that for one
- 24:14moment and tell me that doesn't make you
- 24:18rethink things.
- 24:20I know it does.
- 24:24But if it doesn't, think about, are you
- 24:32accountable?
- 24:32Are you making a decision because of your
- 24:36core values or because of some emotion you
- 24:40have?
- 24:41If it's only emotion, that might not be
- 24:45the right decision.
- 24:46Your future doesn't need to predict everything correctly.
- 24:49Let's just say that right off the bat.
- 24:51It needs you to think clearly when everything
- 24:54isn't clear, to tolerate uncertainty without becoming reckless,
- 24:59to admit when information is incomplete, to make
- 25:02a thoughtful choice and take responsibility for it
- 25:06and to change course when new evidence generally
- 25:09requires it.
- 25:10That's strong judgment, ladies and gentlemen.
- 25:13Our master topic this week is a real
- 25:15amazing one.
- 25:17Become someone your future self can depend on.
- 25:22Can you depend on yourself right now?
- 25:25And becoming that person doesn't mean becoming a
- 25:29perfect person.
- 25:30It means becoming more thoughtful, more observant, more
- 25:34reflective, more willing to challenge your assumptions and
- 25:40more comfortable saying, based on what I know
- 25:44today, this is the decision I'm prepared to
- 25:47make.
- 25:48Based on what I now know today, this
- 25:51is the decision I'm prepared to make.
- 25:55And if tomorrow brings meaningful new information, you
- 26:00learn, based on the information I had yesterday,
- 26:04this is the decision I was going to
- 26:05make.
- 26:06Based on the information I've just learned this
- 26:09morning, I've changed my decision.
- 26:14I'm not perfect.
- 26:15And with the new facts being brought to
- 26:18the table, I can see that would not
- 26:21be the right decision.
- 26:22You adjust, and ladies and gentlemen, you grow.
- 26:28You know, people may not like you every
- 26:30day, okay?
- 26:32Maybe because you're doing the right thing and
- 26:35they want you to cut corners, right?
- 26:39That's an important piece, guys.
- 26:41Ladies and gentlemen, if you do not know
- 26:43who I am right now, I am John
- 26:45C.
- 26:46Morley.
- 26:46I'm a serial entrepreneur, and I thank you
- 26:47so much for joining me for another amazing
- 26:49episode of the ever popular Inspirations for Your
- 26:52Life show.
- 26:53I have some things to say.
- 26:57The next time you're staring at two choices
- 27:01and neither feels completely right, remember, you don't
- 27:06need perfect certainty to move forward.
- 27:09You need the best information available, the willingness
- 27:13to ask difficult questions, and the judgment to
- 27:17choose responsibly.
- 27:18Remember, decisions are not made on emotion, right?
- 27:24An employer that hires or fires on emotion
- 27:27is going to be destined for failure.
- 27:29Maybe not today, but in the future.
- 27:31Learn to make decisions your future self can
- 27:35respect, because when every choice feels wrong, the
- 27:39answer isn't always to wait for certainty.
- 27:43Sometimes the answer is to think clearly, is
- 27:46to choose thoughtfully, and to move forward.
- 27:54Be sure to check out BelieveMeAchieved.com for
- 27:56more of my amazing, of course, inspiring creations.
- 27:59Take care, everyone.
