- 0:00Speaker 1: Section twenty four of the Heart of the New Thought
- 0:04Speaker 1: by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 0:09Speaker 1: public domain. The important trifles you will find in the
- 0:17Speaker 1: effort to reach a higher spirituality in your daily life,
- 0:21Speaker 1: that the small things try your patience and your strength
- 0:26Speaker 1: more than the greater ones. Home life, like business life,
- 0:31Speaker 1: is composed of an accumulation of trifles. There are people
- 0:36Speaker 1: who bear great sorrows with resignation, and seem to gain
- 0:41Speaker 1: a certain dignity and forth of character through trouble, but
- 0:46Speaker 1: who are utterly vanquished by trivial annoyances. The old fashioned
- 0:51Speaker 1: Orthodox Christian was frequently of this order. Death, poverty, and misfortune.
- 1:00Speaker 1: He bore without complaining, and became oftentimes a more agreeable
- 1:05Speaker 1: companion in times of deepest sorrow. He regarded all such
- 1:11Speaker 1: experiences as the will of God and bow to them.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yet if his dinner was late, his coffee below the standard,
- 1:21Speaker 1: if his eye glasses were misplaced, or his toe trodden upon,
- 1:27Speaker 1: he become a raging line, and his roar drove his
- 1:31Speaker 1: affrighted household into dark corners. There have been neighborhood angels
- 1:38Speaker 1: who watched beside the dying sinner sustained orphans and widows,
- 1:43Speaker 1: and endured great troubles sublimely like martyrs. But if a
- 1:48Speaker 1: dusty shoe trod upon a freshly washed floor, or husband
- 1:53Speaker 1: or child came tartly to the breakfast table, or lingered
- 1:57Speaker 1: outside the door after regulation hour for retiring lo the
- 2:03Speaker 1: angel became virago or a droning mosquito with persistent sting.
- 2:10Speaker 1: The New philosophy demands serenity and patience through small trials,
- 2:15Speaker 1: as well as fortitude in meeting life's larger ills. It demands, too,
- 2:22Speaker 1: that we seek to avoid giving other unnecessary irritation by
- 2:26Speaker 1: a thoughtless disregard of the importance of trifles. A man
- 2:31Speaker 1: is more likely to keep calm if he wakes in
- 2:35Speaker 1: the night and discovers that the house is on fire
- 2:39Speaker 1: than he is if, on being fully prepared to retire,
- 2:43Speaker 1: he finds the only mug on the third story is
- 2:46Speaker 1: missing from his wash stand, or the cake of toilet
- 2:50Speaker 1: soap he asks for the day before has been forgotten.
- 2:55Speaker 1: A mother bears the affliction of a crippled child with
- 2:58Speaker 1: more equanimity than she is able to bring to bear
- 3:02Speaker 1: upon the continual thoughtfulness of a strong one to be
- 3:06Speaker 1: kind means to be thoughtful. The kindness and most loving
- 3:11Speaker 1: heart will sometimes forget and be careless. But it cannot
- 3:17Speaker 1: be perpetually forgetful and careless of another's wishes and needs,
- 3:22Speaker 1: even in the merest trifles. End of Section twenty four
