- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Shuruk Cedry this episode 539.
- 0:19They'll be your host, Kyle Cord. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:23Reyes. Nate.
- 0:36Casey, how are we? You know what I like?
- 0:38I like seeing that people clearly have their notifications
- 0:42on. I love it.
- 0:45Clearly, they're hopping in right away.
- 0:47It's really revealing on days that it's like, hey, we're a
- 0:54little off schedule, they were a little bit different time,
- 0:57different day, and they're still here.
- 1:00Bang, just like that with nobody's on.
- 1:04That's important. That means a lot.
- 1:10That's all. That's all I got.
- 1:14Much appreciated to those of you that join us on the stream.
- 1:17Well, we love talking ball and I'm here to tell you that we got
- 1:21some good things we're talking about today.
- 1:22Let's talk some ball before we do that, though.
- 1:26Well, no, I already know the answer to this question.
- 1:28You didn't get a chance to get any dogs or burgers today.
- 1:31Did you celebrate the the new the day that is Memorial Day,
- 1:36honor our fallen. Honestly, let's just let's just
- 1:40go ahead and acknowledge that right off the top here because
- 1:43that's that's more important than anything we're going to
- 1:45talk about. You know, we don't even, we
- 1:48don't say happy Memorial Day, but it is a weekend worth
- 1:52celebrating as we, we pay our respects and our, and the honor
- 1:58to those who have fallen, have paid the the ultimate sacrifice
- 2:02to protect our freedom, greatly appreciated to those men and
- 2:07women and their families, because as, as we know, like we,
- 2:11we know people who have, who have served and it takes a toll
- 2:15on the family as well. So, you know, this is a, this is
- 2:18a weekend not about not about burgers and dogs, although that
- 2:22is an opportunity for people to gather and, and reflect on these
- 2:24things. That is an element of this, but
- 2:30an important weekend to, to honor and remember and reflect.
- 2:34So we, we thank, we thank those of you who have served or are
- 2:43part of a family or have friends or or loved ones that that have
- 2:47served. So we thank you for that.
- 2:50Big time, man. What better way to celebrate our
- 2:53freedom than, you know, hanging out with fam, Grilling,
- 2:58laughing, telling stories, watching ball, yuking it up.
- 3:02That's what freedom's all about, baby.
- 3:07Baseball and freedom, they just go hand in hand.
- 3:09I tell you what, it's very true. I tell you, I tell you a guy
- 3:16who's worth talking about right now and I'll look, it's, you
- 3:20know, it's not even, it's not even our midweek episode.
- 3:24But I tell you what. It's hair Scubal.
- 3:29Can we? I know, I, I, I got to be
- 3:33careful with that, man. I, I use that a little too
- 3:35liberally where I'm just, yeah, I'm, I'm going to get, I'm going
- 3:39to get some people in trouble. I apologize.
- 3:42I, I, I'm going to, I'm, I'm messing something up, messing
- 3:47somebody up. I don't, I got to keep, keep an
- 3:49eye out for that. But no little, little premature
- 3:56credit cannon for Tarek Scubal. We'll just go ahead and and hit
- 3:59him with that. Sure.
- 4:01Dude. The.
- 4:05Without a doubt the best pitcher in baseball.
- 4:09This guy like he, every time he goes out, it's like what, what
- 4:14is he going to do differently this time out to demonstrate
- 4:18that he's still the best pitcher in baseball to eliminate any
- 4:22question of anybody else possibly taking that title from
- 4:25him this season. And he goes out and and does
- 4:29this. I mean, this is just hands down
- 4:33one of the better games you're ever going to see pitched.
- 4:36And I don't like to throw that around loosely, but I mean, ACG,
- 4:39two hits, no runs, no walks, 13 KS and that great.
- 4:46As crazy as it sounds, that's not even the the most, to me at
- 4:51least you may disagree. That's not even the most
- 4:54impressive part of the whole feet 94 pitches, which as as we
- 4:59all know, is a Maddox under 100 pitches.
- 5:02That's the rule. 94 pitches, 72 strikes, 72 strikes.
- 5:13Let me do the quick math on that.
- 5:15What is that? What does that come out to?
- 5:18What is that? What is that strike percentage
- 5:21I'm? Going to say 82%.
- 5:26All right, it's been a minute since I, I did math.
- 5:29I'm going to divide those numbers 72, I got it, I got it.
- 5:3472 / 94 that comes out to a strike percentage of 77%.
- 5:41Close enough. That's gross. 26 swings and
- 5:46misses, his first and honestly the biggest of shout outs to
- 5:51Tarek Schuble, the first CG of his career.
- 5:55All of this according to Is Jeffrey Passing?
- 5:58Kind of surprising about that update, you know?
- 6:03That's what I'm saying. You would assume this, this dude
- 6:05would have at least half a dozen C GS on his belt.
- 6:09But he's like, you know what? I don't actually I, I have 0C
- 6:12GS. Let me just go out and do it in
- 6:16arguably the most dominant fashion that it could be done.
- 6:20Well, I wanted to, I wanted to kind of look up if there is
- 6:24anything different necessarily. So are my question for you is,
- 6:30are you wearing your nerd hat today?
- 6:34I'm wearing my nerd ears. I'm open to whatever it is that
- 6:37you have for me. OK, I'm wearing my nerd.
- 6:40I'm so I'm listening. When I, when I like to nerd out,
- 6:43I, I just, I just take a little jaunt, just a little stroll over
- 6:49to baseball savant. We just, we're just making up
- 6:53words now. Is that a thing?
- 6:54Jaunt. Jaunt.
- 6:58I don't. I don't I'm.
- 6:59Going to go JAUNT jaunt. You know that's a word jaunt, a
- 7:06short excursion or journey for pleasure.
- 7:09How about that? There we are.
- 7:10That's a pole right there. I'm.
- 7:12A nerd jaunt. Don't know if I've ever used
- 7:14that before, but let's. Roll with welcome.
- 7:17Well, I was trying to figure out like just year by year if
- 7:23there's anything that's doing differently, right?
- 7:25Because like, he really came on the scene in 2023, Cy Young last
- 7:33year. So like, is there anything
- 7:36ticking up? Is there anything changing?
- 7:38Like what? How is he just getting better?
- 7:44Not a ton of change. Couple things that have tweaked
- 7:48is that the fastball has like really kind of dropped off a lot
- 7:52more and the change up has gone up and the sinker usage has gone
- 7:56up. So it's stuffed with movement.
- 7:59And then it was like, OK, we'll have those pitches themselves
- 8:02changed at all. The spin rate has jumped up on
- 8:06the change up and so has the speed a little bit.
- 8:13Last year he was at that change up was sitting at about 86 This
- 8:16year sitting about 88. So he's getting a little more
- 8:19movement, he's getting a little more velocity on it.
- 8:21And I think it's I think it's playing dude.
- 8:23And that's how it's number one pitch.
- 8:26His number one usage of of pitches is change up and the
- 8:30fact that 4 seam is going down and the sinker usage is going
- 8:33up. So it's like those three are
- 8:36just dangerous, bro. And it's not like he's doing
- 8:41this where he's got like 9293 in the tank.
- 8:45No, he he's averaging 97, so it's like it's unfair.
- 8:52It's no, what's what's unfair is the last pitch of the of this
- 8:57Maddox 102.6. How, how do you get, I mean, I,
- 9:05I guess if there's a guy in the league that can do it,
- 9:07apparently it's schooble, but like, how do you how do you keep
- 9:11that in the tank when it's gross?
- 9:16You can only assume as mere mortals that we are, you can
- 9:20only assume that you kind of empty the tank to reach the,
- 9:24the, the milestone of ACG. But he's like no pump the brakes
- 9:30still got 103 left to go. I it's nuts, man.
- 9:37The my, the, the biggest take away and I've, I put out a post
- 9:40about it, which it's, I, I, you know, I'm, I'm very encouraged,
- 9:46I'll say by the, by the feedback I was getting on it, but I put
- 9:51out a tweet earlier today and I, I posted it to the IG and
- 9:56Facebook and, and folks for sharing their thoughts.
- 9:59But I said Major League Baseball doesn't care about starting
- 10:03pitchers like it once did. But I'm here to tell you, a dog
- 10:06who can go 7 to 9 innings every fifth day and make opposing
- 10:10batters look like little leaguers will never not be cool.
- 10:14And I stand by that. And if they're if they're
- 10:17they're they're a handful of guys in baseball that I still
- 10:21feel really encapsulate that that description really fit that
- 10:26description. What I would I would have to say
- 10:30if not leading the pack is at the very near top of that list
- 10:34in Tarek Skubal. I mean, this guy does not care
- 10:40about, you know, keeping some in the tank, holding out for the
- 10:46next start, keeping an eye on on a pitch limit.
- 10:49He wants to go out there and shove it down your throat.
- 10:54And I how how we ever got away from this being the norm, I will
- 11:01never understand like why we decided why we look how we as a
- 11:05sport looked at that. And he was like, I mean, that's,
- 11:07that's great and all, but let's let's switch gears here to
- 11:15employing 6 to 9 high leverage guys that'll throw 12 pitches
- 11:24every 3rd day. Let's let's do that.
- 11:28I. Don't understand.
- 11:30Like sometimes you just got to go with, you got to go with what
- 11:35feels good in your gut, what feels good in your heart.
- 11:39And if you look at Tarek Schuble, that just feels right.
- 11:44Not this open or nonsense, not this.
- 11:48We've got a closer, but we're going to use them in the seventh
- 11:51because it's the high leverage situation that doesn't feel
- 11:54right. Give me the red blooded American
- 11:59dog that's going to give you 8 plus throwing 130 pitches every
- 12:09fifth day. Give me that.
- 12:11I want that again. And you're.
- 12:13Gassed up, I love it. I dude, I, I'm, I'm telling you
- 12:17what, man, and you know, you know what's really what's really
- 12:21got me gassed on this whole starting pitcher thing.
- 12:25I dusted off the Xbox this weekend, sure.
- 12:29And I popped in, I popped in MVP 2005.
- 12:34Actually, I didn't even need to pop it in.
- 12:35That's the only that's it stays. It's the only it's the only game
- 12:39that I played anymore. Turned it on.
- 12:41On that turned it on and I was like, well, earlier the over the
- 12:46weekend I played, I played classic Red Sox, Yankees.
- 12:49I was like, let me just get this out of my system.
- 12:51I had Wakefield on the bump. He threw like a one run CG.
- 12:54Which little trivia for you? Tim Wakefield never threw ACG,
- 13:01by the way, in his many years on the Bump.
- 13:06But it was, I believe it was, was it last night, the night
- 13:11before? I was like, let's let's go off
- 13:13the beaten path here a little bit.
- 13:14Let's let's mix it up. I was like, let's look around
- 13:17what other teams I could use. I completely forgot that in that
- 13:20MVPO 5 game that you could play with what they call the Legends
- 13:25team and then I think it's like the Heroes team.
- 13:28And so they just divvied it up like half of the guy like the, I
- 13:32think it's the Legends. It's like Ruth Gehrig, guys like
- 13:37that. And then on the Heroes, it's
- 13:39like, I think it's like Bob Gibson, Willie Mccovey, like
- 13:46guys like that. I think some of the more recent
- 13:48guys, Brooks Robinson I think was on team, but I'm just
- 13:52looking at that starting staff and it was like Nolan Ryan, Bob
- 13:57Gibson, Bob Feller and I'm like. Why?
- 14:05Why did we? Why did?
- 14:07We Why did we get away from this?
- 14:10I don't know, man, this is I mean, but if you if you want to
- 14:13pull up this thread, we can. It's just it's analytics have
- 14:19have really, I don't want to say ruined because there is some use
- 14:27like there's no, no doubt, but I don't think we were really fully
- 14:33prepared or aware for what it was going to do to, to not just
- 14:38our sport, but sports in general, brother.
- 14:41The NBA has been more affected by analytics than baseball.
- 14:46Has it really? Yeah.
- 14:48Dude that's why they only Chuck up threes now.
- 14:51That's the all. That's all they do.
- 14:53They just launched threes and like big men aren't big men
- 14:58anymore. They don't post up anymore.
- 15:00They just hang out behind the arc and they just Chuck it.
- 15:05Everybody just chucks up threes. And I I think it's like that,
- 15:09that approach of same thing, man, where it's it's apparently
- 15:14more efficient and and more advantageous to try to hit the
- 15:18ball out of the ballpark, to knock it on base tonight, hit
- 15:24behind runners. And I think with that, like
- 15:28pitching has just let's just Max these guys out all the time.
- 15:33That's what's super refreshing about what Tarek Scubal is
- 15:37doing. That's why I wanted to look into
- 15:38the numbers because it's like, how are you averaging that kind
- 15:43of velocity with your fastball, but it's not even your main
- 15:45pitch? And how are you somehow getting
- 15:5013 punches in a Max? Because if you see 7-8
- 15:57strikeouts from a starter, like it's normally coming in like the
- 16:005th and they're already at 8590 pitches, you know what I mean?
- 16:05Like there's no shot of him going all the way.
- 16:08So how do you have that efficiency with swing and miss
- 16:14with the Vela? Like it's, it's very impressive.
- 16:18I, I think there's a sweet spot where you can have stuff and
- 16:23still pitch in what I mean pitch, not throw.
- 16:26I mean pitch. It's very refreshing.
- 16:31And I know he's a little bit of a Unicorn, but like I do believe
- 16:36that it could, it could trend back a little bit in this
- 16:40direction. I want to believe it in my
- 16:42heart. It's just crazy because like
- 16:47you, I mean, I I understand that those guys were greats in the
- 16:52game in their own respect, but you mentioned Scooble being a
- 16:57bit of a Unicorn, but like, and not to be the whole like back in
- 17:01the day guy, because I wasn't even alive quote back in the
- 17:04day. But a few of those there, yeah.
- 17:06Like there were multiple Tarek Scoobles in the league and
- 17:09nobody really thought twice about it.
- 17:10They're just like, well, this is what we do.
- 17:13And I just I this has no, this is I'm not using this as
- 17:17evidence towards my argument about trying to reinstate the
- 17:22importance of starting pitching, But it's it's just always a
- 17:25funny nugget. Do you know, I think we've
- 17:30talked about on here, Do you know how many, you know, how
- 17:32many complete games Cy Young had?
- 17:35If you really want to go quote back in the day, I'll give him
- 17:43250 complete games. Yeah, 749, yeah.
- 17:52Yeah, yeah. I mean, like, we don't even have
- 17:55to compare those guys, you know, like we wasn't that long ago
- 17:58that we had Verlander and Scherzer and their prime and CC
- 18:03and guys that are just like, I, you're going to have to drag me
- 18:06off this mound. I don't care about what my
- 18:08pitch, my pitch count is like. I, I, I don't know.
- 18:14I don't know if it's a mentality thing.
- 18:16I don't know if it's, it's, I think it's very hard if you're
- 18:20not pushing these guys to the limit in the minor league system
- 18:25and then expecting anything different in the big league
- 18:28system. I don't know if it's a lack of
- 18:32development. I don't know if it's a complete
- 18:34philosophy change, but I think we see that like it's funny to
- 18:41me that the postseason really exposes the value.
- 18:46Like why do we not value? Why do we play the game
- 18:48differently when we get to the postseason?
- 18:50You know what I mean? Like you see how good and deep
- 18:54these teams go when they have a solid rotation because that
- 18:58bullpens going to be tired no matter what.
- 19:01By the time we get to that point in the season, the bullpens
- 19:03going to be exhausted and we see how bullpens are going to let
- 19:07you down like we just watched in this Last Post season, like you
- 19:11can't expect 130 innings out of a closer.
- 19:15It's just it's not going to work, man.
- 19:19They were talking about on the broadcast this weekend.
- 19:22I was super busy this weekend. We had a lot going on.
- 19:24So a lot of what I was catching was actually the radio calls of
- 19:28the Sox game against the OS. And they were talking about on
- 19:31the broadcast how they've currently got three guys in
- 19:35their pen trending towards 60 appearances, which if you're not
- 19:41familiar with like reliever appearances, like what's
- 19:44considered normal, Like that's, that's a lot like usually you
- 19:46have like maybe one guy, they have three.
- 19:50And sort of on that note, they're talking about the guy
- 19:54who's leading that rotation and Garrett Crochet and apparently
- 20:01Alex Core. I don't know if it's ultimately
- 20:03Core's call, but maybe it's possibly.
- 20:06Those above him, but they're limiting, limiting his workload
- 20:12so that he's fresher in October. And I said you got to get there
- 20:201st and you're not going to get there two games under 500.
- 20:28Yeah. Which is how this season is
- 20:30shaking out for them. And, and I'm not, I'm not just
- 20:32like picking on the Red Sox. I know this is like a, a broader
- 20:35issue around the league where you've got workload management
- 20:38and, and how that plays into the, the value or devaluation
- 20:43of, of starting pitching. But there's just so much at play
- 20:47here that like, I feel like they're trying to solve too many
- 20:52issues by just slapping a well, let's just go after these these
- 20:57relievers and and we'll just we'll just rely heavily on the
- 21:00bullpen. Like it's not that's not going
- 21:02to solve all your issues. You we need like it may sound
- 21:05old fashioned, but like starting pitching is going like that's
- 21:10not, it's not going to lose its value.
- 21:14It like that's going to continue to help regardless how you may
- 21:18feel about a traditional closer role.
- 21:21Regardless of those things, having starting pitching that
- 21:24will get you 678 innings is going to lighten the load on
- 21:29your bullpen. That's what these starting
- 21:30pitchers are are built to do. Is to give you length.
- 21:35The opposite argument is that like if you can get into a
- 21:38team's bullpen early in their series, like it shapes out to be
- 21:42advantageous for you, right? If you can make, if you can
- 21:45bounce that first or second starter and really get into the
- 21:49bullpen, it it's I, I, I'm sure there's numbers out there.
- 21:54I'm sure there's analytics to show you how much it would sway.
- 21:58And that comes. I mean, it's, it's a whole can
- 22:00of worms, dude. We can get into we can get it a
- 22:03hitter side and and talk approach and talk about having
- 22:07an actual game plan when you get in the box in making, you know,
- 22:11hunting for a certain pitch or making a pitcher work or paying
- 22:14attention to what he's done before you and the hitters
- 22:17before you. Like I I don't know, I think
- 22:21we're in a like a serious like developmental issue where
- 22:25there's just I don't know if things are being talked about or
- 22:28taught. And this is the worst defensive
- 22:31ever has ever looked, by the way.
- 22:33So it's like I it's a very different game and, and I'm not
- 22:37trying to say like our game that we grew up with was better.
- 22:41It was just, it's just different.
- 22:43And and I think skewing the rules just to get the game back
- 22:50to what it used to be should tell you all it all you need to
- 22:53know. That's a good point.
- 22:56That's a good point. It's like last thing I'll say to
- 22:59to what you just said, right? You're not saying the game we
- 23:04grew up with was better. Like we're we're fully open to
- 23:09changing the game to to evolve in the game if it makes the game
- 23:13better. But if you're changing the game
- 23:16and in the process leaving behind the fund, all of the
- 23:20fundamentals and everything else that got the game to the point
- 23:24that it's at where you felt you needed to change it.
- 23:29Yep. What does that say?
- 23:30Yep. I don't know.
- 23:35All in all, though, tip of the cap to Derek Schuble.
- 23:41Last note here on that first, the only major leaguer to throw
- 23:44a shot out with 13 or more strikeouts and fewer than 100
- 23:47pitches since pitch count records started in 1988.
- 23:54Yeah, just continues to to be hands down best pitcher in
- 23:59baseball. Not even close.
- 24:04Another guy that has throughout his career been in the
- 24:07conversation as one of the game's best.
- 24:10Ronald Lacuna Junior made his return to the diamond this past
- 24:15weekend. First pitch that he sees correct
- 24:22on in on Friday, 467 feet the next day Saturday hits another.
- 24:31So he's got coming in today. 2 jacks in as many games or had
- 24:40had two jacks in as many games. How do we feel about the impact
- 24:47that this has on the Braves? Savior Man, although they've
- 24:55lost two out of the three that he's been back.
- 24:59In our what our fantasy in our fantasy league group text, he
- 25:02hit the first pitch that he sees Friday night.
- 25:05I because we got some Braves fans in that chat.
- 25:08I I text him, I said the Braves are back and then they lose the
- 25:13game and then I follow up with the text at the end of the game
- 25:16narrator. They, in fact, were not back.
- 25:19And that's, you know, I feel like that's kind of the way the
- 25:22season has gone for them thus far, where they just can't, they
- 25:26just can't get traction. It's very odd.
- 25:29I I think it is a good thing. Obviously he's a he's a
- 25:31difference maker and it's and it's all aspects, right.
- 25:35He's A5 tool guy and what he brings defensively and and base
- 25:40running is like, you know, we talk about there's there's
- 25:43really only a handful guys in the league that are going to, no
- 25:47matter what, leave their print on every single game they're in
- 25:51somehow, some way. And he's one of those guys.
- 25:54So does that doesn't even have to be falling in love with the
- 25:58home run because he's going to bring it in some other way.
- 26:01But what do we think of the knee guard, by the way?
- 26:05Can we address that? All I know is that.
- 26:15I didn't got to have a dialogue. Not that we have to get into
- 26:18like an accessories conversation, but I, I, I did
- 26:22say in that in that very group text, I said the yellow, the
- 26:28pops of yellow that he was rocking on top of the Friday
- 26:32Reds. I was about it.
- 26:36Now you're it seems as though you're asking more about the the
- 26:40practicality. Are we talking the practicality?
- 26:43I we're talking about a a shin guard that has now gone above
- 26:46the kneecap. It's it's it's an additional
- 26:49piece that. Congress the knee.
- 26:52I got to look at this Oh yeah, you're right, I did that's OK.
- 26:56I yeah, I was watching him and I was like, there was something
- 27:00that just wasn't wasn't making sense to me and I couldn't put
- 27:03my finger on it. But yeah, that OK, now I'm
- 27:05seeing it. Yeah, that's a that is an
- 27:07interesting little. No, I understand a little bit of
- 27:13a higher shin guard. I I mean, there's plenty of guys
- 27:16that do it. I think Shohei wears one that's
- 27:18pretty high. To be fair.
- 27:19It's inside the pant, the pant leg.
- 27:25But this I mean the knee, like I understand you've had knee
- 27:28injuries. What?
- 27:28I was going to say, I mean, if there's a guy.
- 27:30Bidding for torn AC LS that's it makes no sense.
- 27:34It makes no sense. Well, I, I, I mean, I've
- 27:39thankfully, I mean, there are, there are many things that I am
- 27:42truly grateful for. And one of those things is the
- 27:45fact that I have never, knock on wood, have never dealt with an
- 27:49ACL injury. But I would have to imagine like
- 27:53at the very least, it's like a Peace of Mind thing, right?
- 27:56It's like practically it may not help, but like having a little
- 28:01bit of just reassurance there that you're telling me that
- 28:03wouldn't do anything for you mentally.
- 28:05I think a brace or a sleeve like some type of compression thing
- 28:10on the inside, like sure, I mean that it's understandable.
- 28:13You see guys with like elbow injuries that wear sleeves like
- 28:16I I can wrap my mind around that.
- 28:18But like a protective hard shin guard like you fouling a ball
- 28:26off of your knee that you had surgery on doesn't change
- 28:29anything. So that's all.
- 28:32We're here. We're Nate.
- 28:34Mean to be the accessory police. Nate had a flight today.
- 28:39He just bear with him. Just got to get some of the, I
- 28:43mean, just give him some grace. He's got to get some of the
- 28:47grumps out. You know, you know what really
- 28:50pisses me off are the people that put their backpacks in the
- 28:55overhead bins. What are we doing?
- 28:58Guys, as opposed to under the seat?
- 29:00It's it's under the seat. It's under the seat.
- 29:05Now we're delayed because these idiots are walking up and down
- 29:08the aisle trying to find a spot for their bag, but there's no
- 29:12spots because your backpack's up there.
- 29:18Sorry. Good.
- 29:21Good thing Acuna's back, man. Glad he's back.
- 29:23Looks. Good.
- 29:24I'm glad. Yeah, yeah, let's.
- 29:25I'm glad we circled back. Looks good, looks good.
- 29:29Love to see the pop right away. I think that's the biggest thing
- 29:32too, is that like as a hitter, you just knees are tough, man.
- 29:38There's a lot of rotating thing, there's spikes, you know, it's
- 29:41it's all the above. So the fact that you've seen
- 29:43immediately exit Velo there pop is there.
- 29:50It's good news, man. It's good news, fully healthy.
- 29:53Looks good swinging. It looks good running.
- 29:56All seems as though all the boxes have been checked like
- 29:59right away, like you said, immediately.
- 30:01So good news for the Braves. How do we feel coming into
- 30:05today? How do we, well maybe not coming
- 30:07in today, but as of this very moment, how do we feel about the
- 30:108 1/2 game gap between them and the top of the division, a
- 30:15division that I had them winning and I think you maybe had at the
- 30:21very least in the mix? Let's check.
- 30:25I'm a little nervous, but I don't.
- 30:29I think there's plenty of time. Obviously it's a very volatile
- 30:33division. I had them finishing second in
- 30:37this division and I do have them in the wild card.
- 30:41So yeah. Because look, I mean, the
- 30:51reality, the reality of it is there are a few guys in the
- 30:54league that if they come back can truly to use your, to use
- 30:59the term use earlier, the save your role.
- 31:01There are a few guys in the league that can actually live up
- 31:04to that kind of expectation and fulfill that kind of hope that
- 31:09you can only imagine the fan base has where they're like,
- 31:12what? Like checking the clock,
- 31:14constantly refreshing the feed, Like when is this guy guy back?
- 31:17We need this guy back there to to sort of rehash that there's
- 31:22there's only so many guys that can that.
- 31:25I mean, there's guys in the league that you you think can be
- 31:28that guys that you maybe erroneously hope can fill that
- 31:36gap. But again, there's only two guys
- 31:37that can actually do that, and he's one of them.
- 31:39I think there's guys that like, you know, any fan base would
- 31:42have bias towards as well and try to put that guy in that
- 31:44category. But this I biases I this guy is
- 31:47in that category. That's what he does.
- 31:49And they're getting another one on the other side of the ball,
- 31:51hopefully. And Spencer Schreider just being
- 31:54back on the horse full time. You know, I know that hammy has
- 31:57been an issue, but I, I think it's, I think it's going to end
- 32:01up being a very tight race. That's just what this division
- 32:04is. I haven't looked at like
- 32:05divisional matchups. I my only thing is that like,
- 32:08yes, it was a rough start start O and seven or O and eight,
- 32:12whatever it was to like creep towards.
- 32:15I think it was just a game under 500 by the time April ended.
- 32:21And now we're coming up on the end of May and you're still kind
- 32:24of in that neighborhood. Like there hasn't been this like
- 32:28who we weathered the storm. Glad this rough first two weeks
- 32:34is kind of out of our system. Like it's still like there
- 32:37hasn't been like this. Let's kick it in the next year
- 32:40and find something else quite yet, which I'm just curious to
- 32:44see. I've really like dove deep into
- 32:47what Braves performance looks like.
- 32:49But I would say that there's some positive that has come out
- 32:54of like, you know, Cunya's absence.
- 32:56You're seeing some other guys that have kind of, you know, Eli
- 32:59White and and Nick Allen, like guys that like, you haven't
- 33:02really heard of before. And then, you know, they get the
- 33:04opportunity to play this year and you're like, OK, I can kind
- 33:07of see some stuff out of that. You know, even though they look
- 33:11like substitute teachers, you take the uniform off.
- 33:15You know, but I mean, to your point, like, maybe, yeah, sure,
- 33:20maybe there wasn't like a 2-3 week stretch where it's like,
- 33:23OK, who got that out of our system?
- 33:25Now let's kick it into gear. Maybe it wasn't two or three
- 33:29weeks, but now two months into the season, you get Acuna back.
- 33:36It's now the time where you finally go.
- 33:38Oh, who? OK, we weathered that we're
- 33:41we're flirting with 500. Now we go like, granted, it
- 33:46this, this was a a more drawn out weathering of the storm that
- 33:52we would have hoped for, but it's still early enough to where
- 33:57you can close and at me, it sounds crazy to some, but you
- 34:00can close an 8 1/2 game gap. You put a couple good weeks
- 34:06together and you're only a few games out.
- 34:08Yeah, and once this, I think once this lineup gets going on
- 34:12all cylinders too, because I mean, they clearly have a lot of
- 34:15pop. I think once once it gets going,
- 34:19it's and that's what this guy does.
- 34:21That's what he just he Mikuni is going to ignite that in a way.
- 34:26And you got Matt Olson that's starting to, you know, come
- 34:28around. Like I think they're going to be
- 34:30fine. I think it's going to be a tight
- 34:32finish. They got to get it going,
- 34:35though. They got to just play a little
- 34:37bit better baseball goofy on the bases so far.
- 34:41So yeah, I believe in him still. Well, they are chasing down the
- 34:49Philadelphia Phillies who leading up to Sunday had a nine
- 34:55game win streak, which was funny enough was a game that I as an
- 35:01honorary Phillies fan to I tuned in for.
- 35:06I tuned in for. Well, I just want to you know
- 35:08all about transparency here. I tuned in for the game.
- 35:15Was it, it would have had to have been Saturday night.
- 35:19I think it yeah, I think it was Saturday night, 'cause I was
- 35:21like, you know, I've been talking, I've been talking up
- 35:24the A's, which I'm there. I'm not going to name names
- 35:28here, but there's some people taking victory laps on the the
- 35:32A's just being suck right now, just being nothing but suck.
- 35:38And I'm like, let's, it's May. Sure.
- 35:45Plenty of time for the A's to be the playoff team, the postseason
- 35:49team that I believe them to be. So I'm just I just wanted to
- 35:54acknowledge that. But coming into Sunday, the nine
- 35:59game win streak Phillies the starting staff to discussing
- 36:05first eight games of that streak, A182 ERA.
- 36:10The team had an OPS of eight O 7 and 12 homers during that
- 36:16stretch. And not to mention best team in
- 36:20baseball coming in today. So as we mentioned, this is a
- 36:23team at the the Braves and and even the Mets are are chasing
- 36:27down only game and a half back at this point.
- 36:30But Phillies are Phillies are pacing the the National League,
- 36:35right? Well, the entire league, but
- 36:37specifically the National League right now.
- 36:40Do we feel that this will sustain itself for some time or
- 36:43do we feel like the Phillies had to go on this run to reach this
- 36:47mark? But now we're going to level
- 36:48back out and now that Acuna is back, maybe Soto starts heating
- 36:52up. Now that then maybe we feel like
- 36:54the Annalise is going to start to beat up on itself again.
- 37:00I don't know. I'm kind of looking through the
- 37:02Phillies schedule for the month of May and I don't know as far
- 37:07as weakness goes, you know, where they rank.
- 37:09But it doesn't look like it was a very tough month starting off,
- 37:15you know, finishing a series with the Nats, Diamondbacks,
- 37:19Rays, Guardians. We're like, OK, not bad.
- 37:23And then it's just starts to, you know, Cardinals, Pirates,
- 37:26Rockies, A's, and then they're going to end with the three-game
- 37:31set starting against the Braves tomorrow and then Brewers again.
- 37:35So, you know, it's weird. It's always that fine line of
- 37:40like, hey, you can't sit here and knock A-Team for beating
- 37:44teams that they're supposed to beat.
- 37:46You know, we can't, we can't take that and hold it against
- 37:50them. But at the same time, you got to
- 37:52wonder what's real, what's not. But you mentioned already their
- 37:58starting staff is real. That's that's they're crazy deep
- 38:03and they all look good. And even this streak had to end
- 38:06on a on a walk off, didn't it? I think the A's had to walk it
- 38:09off to be able to to be able to cap this, yeah, this win streak
- 38:15off for the Phillies. So playing good ball, man,
- 38:21playing good ball. And it's not live and die by the
- 38:24home run from from my point of view, from my perspective, it's
- 38:28it's a lot of hitting, a lot of a lot of swipes and good
- 38:34pitching. And that Brandon Marsh played
- 38:40the plate the other day was nice.
- 38:42It was yesterday, dude. I That was nice.
- 38:46Beautiful. I love those.
- 38:49Yeah. And kind of more broader
- 38:54conversation. I, I got to say I I enjoyed
- 38:57watching some some ball in in Sacramento.
- 39:01I enjoy the experience. Did you?
- 39:02It was a nice it was a nice mix up.
- 39:04I was watching, I think it was Saturday because I think I was
- 39:13that. I went to the Yanks Rocks game
- 39:15and then came back and then we just really just kind of vegged
- 39:18out and I threw, I think it was Saturday.
- 39:24I threw the game on and I was watching.
- 39:27No, it was yesterday. I was watching Philly's Days
- 39:30yesterday. That's what it was.
- 39:31I didn't get to see the end, but I was watching.
- 39:34'Cause you were scoreboard watching for our fantasy match.
- 39:37I was. I'll just go ahead and say that.
- 39:41Bad guy won good guys. I'll let you do the math on.
- 39:46Fighting for life right now. Good guys are struggling, but
- 39:50Kotze got tossed. There's no clubhouse to walk to
- 39:59when you get tossed. You got to go out the outfield
- 40:01wall. My man the.
- 40:04Walk of shame. I saw that.
- 40:06I, I, yeah, I saw that. I watched it live and I was
- 40:09like, this is unbelievably awkward and I love it.
- 40:13It's just so weird, man. What is that?
- 40:15You get those those commercial breaks now where they do like
- 40:19the rewind during MLBTV and they'll show you like an old
- 40:22clip. This is the kind of stuff, this
- 40:26is the kind of stuff that gets clipped and you watch it decades
- 40:29later and you're like, why is why is a manager getting tossed?
- 40:33And I'm going to walk out freaking getting cheered by all
- 40:37of his fans as he's walking up the the warning track.
- 40:40Yeah, that's one of those like out of contact.
- 40:42It's just context clips. Weird stuff, man.
- 40:44It's weird. I like it.
- 40:46I'm telling you, I I think once you wrap your mind around like,
- 40:49hey, this isn't the forever scenario for the A's and it's
- 40:52just like, this is a cool, unique thing.
- 40:56And it really didn't even seem like that bad of an experience
- 40:59watching it on TV in Sacramento. And that was without her face
- 41:05calling the game someone else. She get booted or she'd get
- 41:08fired or what happened? I don't know, stay off, maybe an
- 41:11off day. But no, you mentioned the thing
- 41:15about the clubhouse, which reminded me.
- 41:16I saw these I I saw Severino had some had a gripe about it
- 41:21recently. So I pulled it up and sure
- 41:23enough, this was I think earlier this past week.
- 41:27Severino was talking about his home Rd. splits and how he's
- 41:34been significantly better on the road.
- 41:37He said I just need to figure out a way to pitch good at home.
- 41:40I feel like if I only pitch on the road, I'll be freaking sigh
- 41:44young, but I need to get better at home.
- 41:46Through six starts at Sutter Health Park, Severino is now O
- 41:50and four and holds a 675 with fourteen walks and just 29
- 41:54strikeouts. Through four way games has
- 41:57allowed just two earned runs and 25 innings with six walks and 16
- 42:02strikeouts and no homers for a .72 road ERA.
- 42:06That's something I need to pay attention to in fantasy.
- 42:09I got this man on my club. I got to keep.
- 42:12These are things I got to know. But no, he the reason was it was
- 42:19it was actually interesting. It was because of, like, the
- 42:22park itself, he said. One fix Severino talked about is
- 42:28throwing his home bullpen sessions in between starts off
- 42:31the actual stadium mound rather than in the A's bullpen.
- 42:36Yeah, it there was. He mentioned something.
- 42:39Oh, oh. Severino also referenced the
- 42:42lack of a connected clubhouse to the dugout.
- 42:46His this is OK, this is what it was.
- 42:48His usual in game routine on days he starts consists of
- 42:52heading inside the clubhouse during the half innings.
- 42:54He is not on the mound to either watch film or move around to
- 42:57keep his body warm. So he can't do that at home,
- 43:01which like. That's kind of a thing if you
- 43:03ever. Like say what you will about
- 43:05like first world problems or whatever, but like creatures to
- 43:08have it man, especially starting pitchers.
- 43:10And if you don't have that, like.
- 43:12If you got it in 29 other parks, you don't have it here.
- 43:15Well. Crazy.
- 43:17Well, maybe 2828 maybe. I don't know what Steinfeldt.
- 43:21Has at clubhouse. They have to.
- 43:24Yeah, I feel like he does. Yeah, but either way, it was
- 43:32cool. Neato torpedo to watch that
- 43:34game. Phillies.
- 43:37Is Alec bone back? He's he's been raking lately.
- 43:43He. Has he's been He's been swinging
- 43:44it well. Not so well that anybody in our
- 43:48fantasy league needs to pick him up off waivers.
- 43:52I saw I you. Can let at him today, you can
- 43:54let that pass a game of glance today, just let it pass.
- 43:58He hasn't been hitting it that well, but.
- 44:01I might do it right now. He's.
- 44:03He's no, no, no. You don't need to do it.
- 44:05Seriously. You don't need to do that.
- 44:06It's not. I mean, it has been that great.
- 44:08He's been good. Not that great, but no, it's
- 44:13possible. But you know who hasn't been
- 44:15good? And we just I mean we just kind
- 44:17of got done talking about them, but we haven't even really
- 44:18talked about the A's losing streak, which ended funny enough
- 44:23on Sunday, as did the Phillies win streak.
- 44:26A's losing streak ended on Sunday versus with a win over
- 44:29the Phillies. That was an 11 game slide.
- 44:33And this all started after they, if you recall, they took down
- 44:38the dodgers by a score of 11 to 1.
- 44:40And I'm sitting there I'm you want to talk about victory laps.
- 44:43I'm taking a victory lap going, you know, oh big bad dodgers.
- 44:47My, my sack town A's just rolled right into Chavez Ravine and
- 44:53said we'll take care of this and then proceeded to lose 11
- 44:58straight. So not the not the strongest of
- 45:02victory laps for myself, but fortunately they avoided A12
- 45:06game losing streak, something they had not done since 1994.
- 45:12During that stretch, the pen had a because it when, when things
- 45:16like this go South, you always, you're always trying to look at
- 45:19which which position group is responsible.
- 45:22Is this on the offense? Is this on the rotation?
- 45:25Is this on the pen? I'm going to go ahead and say
- 45:28it's a little bit of everything, but very much so on the pen.
- 45:34Their bullpen during that losing streak had an ERA of 10 O2,
- 45:38which I don't even think you need to bother looking at any
- 45:41advanced metrics for that. I think that's a good stopping
- 45:43point. And then offensively, they had
- 45:47an OPS of 671 during that skid. So little bit everything, but I
- 45:54think a lot of that falls on the pen.
- 45:56Mason Miller even had, I think like an outing or two there
- 46:01recently were like specific in the game I watched wasn't wasn't
- 46:05terribly sharp. But I still believe in this A's
- 46:11team. I think they can figure it out.
- 46:12Just got to get this skid out of your system.
- 46:14We talk about it all the time. You, you're due for one of
- 46:17these, maybe not to this this extent, but you're due for a
- 46:20skid or two over the course of 162.
- 46:23So just get out of your system now.
- 46:25Get back on the horse. Yeah.
- 46:30Last thing on the A's, I I think I have like like an epiphany a
- 46:35little bit on you know, when, when you like recognize a like a
- 46:40former player in a current player.
- 46:43Jacob Wilson gives me like major Hunter Pence vibes.
- 46:47Yeah, yeah, OK. Like constant movement,
- 46:52constant, like weird quirkiness, tweakiness.
- 46:55But like, I think he's just always tapped in.
- 47:00And I, I, I don't know what the numbers used to be because I
- 47:03remember like a few years ago when Nolan Arnotto was in, in a
- 47:08Rockies uniform. Still.
- 47:11There's like a limited amount of players that get approval to
- 47:14have like ADHD medication because it's like medically they
- 47:20need it. And he was one of them that was
- 47:22like allowed to take Adderall or whatever ADHD meds.
- 47:26Sure. Jake Wilson.
- 47:28I'm like, I'm wondering, you know, does he get to cause the
- 47:31guy just fouls everything off like he's just it's nuts.
- 47:37It's. Proud to watch he's fidgety he's
- 47:39he's fidgety he's all over the place he's.
- 47:41Fights, dude, it's. Like poking balls.
- 47:43The left, the right. It's a fun at bat to watch.
- 47:46If you haven't gotten to see an at bat from him, it's just
- 47:49TuneIn 'cause he just doesn't take a pitch off.
- 47:52Where are we at on the the season line right now?
- 48:00200 through 200 ABS he's hitting 350 a war of 1970 hits.
- 48:08What was the what was the thing though, with him?
- 48:10Wasn't it like the the? Strikeouts, wasn't it.
- 48:14Strikeouts are walks. One of the two.
- 48:17He's got he's got 11 strikeouts, 12 walks, OPS 888.
- 48:26Not bad. It's old school baseball baby, I
- 48:29like. It not bad at all.
- 48:33Anyway, like it. That's it.
- 48:35That's one of the many reasons I believe in this team.
- 48:37Rhodes, Severino and Jacob Wilson.
- 48:40That's it. They're going to lead the
- 48:41charge. They're leading the They're
- 48:42leading this team to the promise Lane.
- 48:44You watch. Lane or land?
- 48:48Promise land. Just checking words are hard.
- 48:52Yeah. You know what else is hard?
- 48:54Being a Red Sox fan. We can't have 5 seconds of joy.
- 48:59Alex Bregman to the IL 10 day IL but will presumably miss much
- 49:07more time than 10. Days.
- 49:08What's up, man? What happened?
- 49:10Fill me in. I was busy.
- 49:12Strained right quad thinking it's not too bad, think it think
- 49:19it'll be maybe a short stint. But then I believe it was the
- 49:22next day Cora came out and said it was quite a significant
- 49:26injury and then you had Bregman talking about it in in a post
- 49:31game presser and. If you didn't.
- 49:36Not too positive, huh? Yeah, if you didn't.
- 49:40Like if you're feeling OK about it, you didn't leave that post
- 49:43game presser feeling the same way.
- 49:45Was not was not pleased. Was making comparisons to the
- 49:50injury he experienced back in 2021 where he missed 2 1/2
- 49:53months. So not sure what kind of well,
- 49:57I, I know what kind of impact this is going to have on the
- 50:00team. Like it certainly not a good one
- 50:02considering he was you are best even with the start, the Devers
- 50:08or the I shouldn't say the start even with like the last few
- 50:11weeks that you've gotten out of Devers, consistently speaking,
- 50:16your your best offensive player to this point, not having that
- 50:20your lineup is not good. And then they and, and I don't
- 50:26think maybe not officially, but for all intents and purposes A
- 50:30corresponding movie bring up Marcella Meyer.
- 50:33He gets the call up finally. What do?
- 50:37We think of him. I'm, you know, I'm excited about
- 50:41it. I, I hate that he's getting this
- 50:43opportunity given the circumstances, but I, I think he
- 50:46has a chance to serve as a little bit of a spark.
- 50:48But the reality of it is, is this is nothing more Like this
- 50:51team has been 500 for the last I think like 4 years.
- 50:55In fact, I think going back to the World Series when they won
- 50:58and back in 18, I think they're like a game.
- 51:00They're like a game above or below 500 since they won the
- 51:03World Series. So quite literally back going
- 51:07back that far seem as mid. This team is, is nothing but
- 51:13mid. And unfortunately, as as excited
- 51:16as as I am for Marcelo, I don't know if he's going to be able to
- 51:20do enough to change that, but at the very least can hopefully
- 51:25serve as a little bit of a bright spot for this team.
- 51:27What's he been doing? Have we, have we looked at
- 51:30numbers at all? Has he been?
- 51:34He's he hasn't been, no, he has been lighting the world on fire.
- 51:37Slash, 271-340-7471. He had 9 homers, 5 double s and
- 51:44a triple in the International League.
- 51:48But I mean, he wasn't he wasn't Roman Anthony status in terms of
- 51:54lighting the world on fire. But I I'm, I'm eager to see what
- 52:02he can do, but I'm not going back to the whole savior
- 52:04conversation. This is not going to be a guy
- 52:07that's going to come up and and turn the season around single
- 52:09handedly. It's just not going to happen.
- 52:12So that's that, a guy that talking about call UPS knocking
- 52:21on the door. Jack Caglione coming into today,
- 52:26six games at the AAA level, they just caught him up I think last
- 52:30like a week or two ago. We can some change in his last
- 52:34four. The over the last four days
- 52:36coming in today, had five homers at the AAA level this year, he's
- 52:40hitting 34610 ribbies, slugging 923 with an OPS of 1280.
- 52:49So any minute now. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:55Correct me if I'm wrong, this was your this is your rookie of
- 52:57the year pick that was. My rookie of the year and I
- 53:00think if he even with the delayed start, if he keeps
- 53:03hitting like that. My goodness.
- 53:06Looks looks like he's going to be special.
- 53:10And for those unfamiliar, this is the kid out of Florida who
- 53:15was a two way player in college and was the real deal on both
- 53:21sides of the ball, but obviously just kind of focusing at first
- 53:27base. And I did read that the Royals
- 53:30were trying to get him some outfield appearances in the in
- 53:33the minor league system as well just to try and find a spot.
- 53:38But I'm I'm honestly just I'm kind of confused, man.
- 53:42Like, I don't really understand what they have to lose their
- 53:48their offense at the big league level has just been abysmal.
- 53:52I think Pastor Tino has started to turn it on as of late.
- 53:56Yeah, it looks like he's gotten hot as of ladies up to 2:58 with
- 54:01Ajax. So, like, it was a rough start
- 54:03there. But I don't know, man.
- 54:05Like, you got to find a way to get him in.
- 54:09And there's a fine line of of when you start, you know,
- 54:15shaking confidence a little bit by not believing in your guy and
- 54:20not giving him the chance. And then there's also this fine
- 54:24line of like, well, you'd hate to see it kind of fizzle out if
- 54:28he doesn't get to play every day.
- 54:31And that's what he's doing right now.
- 54:32He's playing every day, and he looks good.
- 54:33Just the Royals need to find out to do that at the big league
- 54:36level. Is this real?
- 54:41I'm seeing this tweet from Matt Foss at Matt Foster TV.
- 54:46Jack, this was from yesterday. Jack Kaglion in 44 games this
- 54:51season. So that's across AA and AAA in
- 54:5444 games this season, 14 homers. The Royals in 54 games this
- 55:00season, 32 homers. Is that real?
- 55:06I, I just, I don't want to, I don't want to hear about any
- 55:12type of like, you know, service manipulation going on here
- 55:18because like at a certain point we're going to have to start
- 55:20asking those questions of what's going on.
- 55:24When your offense is this bad, when your pitching is doing this
- 55:27well, when your defense is playing this well, when you're
- 55:30in games, you're in the hunt, you're winning ball games with
- 55:36one of the worst offenses in the big leagues.
- 55:38It's like, what is the point? What are we doing?
- 55:42Like find a way to get this guy on the field somehow?
- 55:46And if that means Sao Perez needs to catch every day to make
- 55:50sure that that DH spot opens up, like, then that's what needs to
- 55:53start happening. And I don't know where the hole
- 55:57is. Like who, who do we need to
- 55:59subtract to get this kid in the lineup?
- 56:03MJ Melendez? Like what?
- 56:06Well, Kevin Biggio I mean not not this is just a name I just
- 56:10saw on the feed today he got I think he got option down to
- 56:12triple AI think. I'm all done with that
- 56:17experiment. Yeah, I'm kind of working. 4th
- 56:20uniform and it's like it. It's all looks the same
- 56:22everywhere it goes. But you mentioned the the
- 56:24pitching being as good as it is, I don't think I realized you
- 56:29they've give they've they've allowed the third fewest runs in
- 56:32all of baseball. I mean, we're, we're talking
- 56:36about them so differently. If they're scoring, even just
- 56:41if, even if they're middle of the road offensively, we're
- 56:44talking about them very differently than we are right
- 56:46now. It'd be getting a lot more
- 56:48attention and this kid would absolutely help.
- 56:50What do you have to lose? 3rd fewest runs allowed by the
- 56:54staff. 4th fewest runs scored by the offense.
- 56:59What are we doing? What are we doing?
- 57:03I told you this offline. I think I think Pasquantino is
- 57:06going to be wearing a different uniform.
- 57:08I think if if this continues to be a log jam and it's not big
- 57:12league service manipulation going on, I think you got to
- 57:16kind of sell high on on Pasquatch and and get this kid
- 57:20in. Well, going going back real
- 57:25quick to the the, the point you made about shaking confidence if
- 57:28he doesn't get his opportunity. I mean, he has you you talk, you
- 57:32hear guys about getting cups of coffees at at different levels.
- 57:37I mean, they haven't even handed him the cup of coffee yet at
- 57:41AAA. So is it fair to say that, you
- 57:44know, like even considering the start he's had or I shouldn't
- 57:49say the start he's had? Yeah.
- 57:50Oh sure. Season as a whole to this point,
- 57:52but specifically the stint that he's had at AAA, as short as it
- 57:55is, could you make the argument that like maybe give him just a
- 58:02little bit more time at this level before we start talking
- 58:05about like. Well, I think it's going to
- 58:07happen whether we want to or not.
- 58:09Like I think he's going to have more time there.
- 58:11It's just it's a different conversation.
- 58:14If this if this offense was better as a whole, that's a hot
- 58:19topic. And like sometimes you don't
- 58:21like your hands are your your your hands being forced here
- 58:24like you have no other choice. And to play devil's advocate,
- 58:31and I understand they have different, we're we're talking
- 58:33about two different player profiles here.
- 58:34But it's it's a name that gets referenced in situations like
- 58:39this where you're sort of rushing a guy along.
- 58:44What if we get a Jared Kelnick situation here?
- 58:49Do we, first of all, do we even think that's possible with the
- 58:51way like the talking player profiles like is like, is the
- 58:57way that he's hitting right now, like is he even capable of
- 59:00hitting a, a Jared Kellnick's slide should he get called up
- 59:07prematurely? Like does, does do his struggles
- 59:11look that bad? I don't know.
- 59:13He's got a lot of swinging, he's got a lot of swinging miss in
- 59:15his game, which is fair. He's huge.
- 59:18And I think that's just something that like you got to
- 59:22let big guys just kind of figure their body out still to kind of
- 59:26like start to get the the strikeout numbers under control.
- 59:29And now you see what he's doing. And I'm not saying Caglion is
- 59:32the next Aaron Judge, but like as far as body size and and, you
- 59:38know, similar style goes, like it's, it's a very long swing and
- 59:42just curious to see if anything changes there. 65250, yeah.
- 59:48He's massive. That's a big boy.
- 59:50He's a. Big human and he's very wide in
- 59:54the box too. Like he takes up the whole box.
- 1:00:00Just interested to see if if if there is some.
- 1:00:06Kind of down tick it. In minor league and whether it's
- 1:00:11AA, AAA, like whatever, like how much time does that give?
- 1:00:13And I just, you know, I, if it was me, I'm, I'm going to start
- 1:00:17asking that question like, what more do you need me to do and
- 1:00:20how many more? Excuses can my manager?
- 1:00:23Or GM give me. That's why I'm not up there
- 1:00:29doing it for for the. Team that matters.
- 1:00:34It's just my perspective, but obviously.
- 1:00:36There's a lot more that goes into this behind the curtain and
- 1:00:39there's inner workings. But like to me it's pretty
- 1:00:42simple. You got a guy that is tearing
- 1:00:44the cover off the ball, you draft him in the first round to
- 1:00:47use your first pick on him like it.
- 1:00:52And he's and he's performing. At a rate that no one on your
- 1:00:56team is doing, what are we doing, Albeit it's at the minor
- 1:01:02league level. It I with the Oh my goodness,
- 1:01:06with the start of the the year, he just as a baseball player
- 1:01:09forget the level. It would be one thing if he get
- 1:01:14if. He gets if he got bumped up.
- 1:01:16To AA if he gets. If he got bumped up to AAA and
- 1:01:19he's hitting like, you know, 290 with an occasional bop here and
- 1:01:24there, maybe he sprays one to the opposite field.
- 1:01:28Like, OK, he's like, he's showing some positive signs.
- 1:01:31He's hitting 326 with 14 homers. Yeah.
- 1:01:40Yeah, like at some, I think you're.
- 1:01:43Right about the excuses thing. It's some point you're not
- 1:01:45hitting 260. Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 1:01:48It's not like. A it.
- 1:01:50It it. Kind of reminds me of the
- 1:01:52Jackson holiday situation where they sent him back down and
- 1:01:54they're like, well, we need to see him.
- 1:01:55What was it? Hit off lefties and immediately
- 1:01:58just starts raking off lefties. It's like, OK, well, he, he,
- 1:02:02he's, he's checked that box. What else are we waiting for?
- 1:02:06It's kind of the same situation here where it's like, what are
- 1:02:08we doing? He's going to force the issue at
- 1:02:10some point. He like they, they're not going
- 1:02:12to have any choice. Yep, Yep, couple more items.
- 1:02:16Here. O'Neill Cruz, did you see?
- 1:02:19Did you see the ball he hit 122.9 miles an hour, the hardest
- 1:02:24hit ball in SAC cast era he had. He had himself a weekend.
- 1:02:28That ball he hit on Friday, I don't know if you saw Friday
- 1:02:32night, dude game tying in the ninth against the Brewers.
- 1:02:37He was so nonchalant after he hit it.
- 1:02:42I legit it 'cause I was looking down at my computer because I
- 1:02:45had it up here on the monitor and I looked up and I kid you
- 1:02:50not, I thought it was a foul ball.
- 1:02:52I'm like, oh, he's just kind of like leaning back, sort of reset
- 1:02:55to get back in the box. Meanwhile the the ball is like
- 1:03:01600 feet away and then does. What he did yesterday.
- 1:03:06Sunday with this this stat cast record exit below.
- 1:03:15Dude's a. Freak.
- 1:03:16Dude is a freak. What a waste.
- 1:03:19What a waste. Unbelievable.
- 1:03:22Let's let's figure it out 125. I'm rooting for 1/20. 5 Now it's
- 1:03:29my next number I'm looking for, although I just I I haven't the
- 1:03:35way it like just didn't even look like it had the the correct
- 1:03:38launch angle to be able to get into the river and clear the
- 1:03:41bleachers and right I was like, did it get all the way?
- 1:03:45Out, yeah. For some reason, I thought I'd
- 1:03:48ended up because I he he yanked it like pretty.
- 1:03:52Yeah, pretty well. It was like a, it was like a
- 1:03:53hook. It was like a let me watch this
- 1:03:56again linea hook. Line drive that.
- 1:03:59Just. There's a few baseballs that
- 1:04:03like I'm, I'd be a little. Nervous to try and get out and
- 1:04:06snag if I'm in the I'm in the crowd and wanted to grab that
- 1:04:09bare handed. I don't think that's I think I'm
- 1:04:11going to let that one go. Oh yeah.
- 1:04:13Oh yeah, that thing surely got. Out there.
- 1:04:15Holy cow, yeah. What a what to your point?
- 1:04:20What a waste. Get whatever, I'm not talking
- 1:04:23about it. No more pirates talk.
- 1:04:25Speaking of freaks, Shohei Otani.
- 1:04:28We're we're that much closer. We're one day closer to freak
- 1:04:32status. Getting this guy back on the
- 1:04:34bump. He touched 97 and a live bullpen
- 1:04:38on Sunday are thrown off the mound at Citi Field. 22 pitches
- 1:04:45across 5 different ABS. He's sitting at.
- 1:04:51I'm reading that he was sitting at 9495 but touch 97 and they're
- 1:04:57still taking it. I don't think they have much of
- 1:04:58A timetable yet. Still taking it day by day but I
- 1:05:04don't know. Man, it's getting more.
- 1:05:06Real. Did you see the clip Kiki?
- 1:05:10Sitting behind the the shell, the PP shell.
- 1:05:14Just like literally like crisscross applesauce, just
- 1:05:18watching. Like you see the catcher in the
- 1:05:20frame and then you see Kiki just chilling, just looking like a
- 1:05:24little kid, just taking. It all in I did yeah, I did see
- 1:05:29that it just. Tells you that like there's,
- 1:05:32there's just different tears and when you have guys that do this
- 1:05:36daily and that they're one of the best in the world and then
- 1:05:39they look at him and they're like, oh, there's another tier.
- 1:05:46Above this, yeah. I'm not that.
- 1:05:48Yeah, dude, it's cool, man. It's cool to see that.
- 1:05:52And like, I know Kiki is a little bit of a character, but
- 1:05:54like, I think that just that tells you exactly what you need
- 1:05:58to know about what this man is capable of.
- 1:06:02I keep thinking. Though about what you said
- 1:06:03about. Maybe there being a little bit
- 1:06:08of urgency with getting him back given the state of their staff.
- 1:06:14I don't know, man. What do I don't know?
- 1:06:16I just took another dub tonight but like.
- 1:06:19I unless this, unless the West starts pushing out him a little
- 1:06:25bit. I mean, there's just not.
- 1:06:28Much to worry about right now outside.
- 1:06:30Of the Giants, then it's. If you're the Dodgers and you're
- 1:06:34like, hey. Can we weather this storm
- 1:06:36without even bringing back this guy?
- 1:06:41Scary stuff, man Scary, scary. Stuff.
- 1:06:48That's all I got, my friend. I got AI, got a.
- 1:06:52Little hot take for you. I got a little take away.
- 1:06:53As we as we end this episode from my from my experience at
- 1:06:58Coors Field this weekend, real quick before I forget I've got
- 1:07:01I've got a. Parting question, so don't let
- 1:07:03me forget. What do you got?
- 1:07:04What's what's cooler my? Hot take or your question?
- 1:07:08No, no, I'll I'll leave it for people to I'll.
- 1:07:11I'll let it marinate to to over the next few days.
- 1:07:17My hot take is I don't think the.
- 1:07:19Rockies are going to end up breaking the White Sox record.
- 1:07:24You're absolutely wrong You. Know why?
- 1:07:26Why? Earlier this episode you.
- 1:07:28Brought up strength to. Schedule for the I think we were
- 1:07:30talking to Phillies and you're like, well, what's just out of
- 1:07:34curiosity. I know it's still we're only in
- 1:07:36May still, but I looked up just remaining strength of schedule.
- 1:07:41No, I think. It was when we're talking.
- 1:07:42Braves and I was like OK where do the Braves fall in this
- 1:07:44Braves have the 5th toughest strength of schedule left in the
- 1:07:48season. Again, I know it's early, but
- 1:07:51looking at the. Sample size of what's the left?
- 1:07:54Braves are fifth on that list. Rockies have the third toughest
- 1:07:58strength of schedule. Who runs that out?
- 1:08:02Since we're here. Second on that list.
- 1:08:06Cincinnati. Reds, which is not a good look
- 1:08:08for yeah, that stuff for a team that.
- 1:08:10I think we both had high. Hopes for and rounding out the
- 1:08:14list at #1 the Chicago White Sox.
- 1:08:19Nice. We're looking at some.
- 1:08:21We're looking at some shaky ball.
- 1:08:24I'm just saying I I don't think. I don't think they're as bad get
- 1:08:30to kind of see some guys in person, like in watching this
- 1:08:33series as intently as I did. Like I think Bretton Doyle is,
- 1:08:38is obviously a name that a lot of people know now that Tovar is
- 1:08:42back. I I think Tovar is like, I don't
- 1:08:46think he gets enough love, man. I don't think he gets enough
- 1:08:48credit like that. That cat is real good.
- 1:08:52And then you guys like I, I think Jordan Beck, Jordan Beck's
- 1:08:57been legit, man. Like a.
- 1:09:00Legit top of the order play good defense, kind of name.
- 1:09:05There's, there's some guys there and you know, whether Ryan
- 1:09:08McMahon, like, survives the trade deadline or not, plays
- 1:09:11incredible defense even though he's not really hitting quite
- 1:09:14yet. I'm not saying this team is good
- 1:09:19by any. Means I just.
- 1:09:20I think they're going to end up being better than.
- 1:09:28The worst team in. Baseball history.
- 1:09:31I think. I think that I I just I.
- 1:09:34Can't see it? I think they're better.
- 1:09:37I mean, dude, they're not. Even though I was there and
- 1:09:40they. Gave they lost. 13 to one on
- 1:09:42Saturday. They played the Yanks tough all
- 1:09:44weekend. Outside of that, yeah, I think
- 1:09:46it says more about the Yankees. Than a dozen Rockies.
- 1:09:49Well, that's my other take, which is, yeah, I think the
- 1:09:54Yankees are better than they are last year.
- 1:09:57I think they're a lot better. Than they were last year.
- 1:09:59Yeah, no going. Going toe to toe with the team
- 1:10:03that's on track to be the worst in.
- 1:10:05Baseball. That's definitely a dude.
- 1:10:07That's a good sign. I'm watching this team daily.
- 1:10:11They. Put the ball in play and they
- 1:10:14play good defense and they run the bases.
- 1:10:17They have speed. It's way different than last
- 1:10:20year. I'm telling you right now if
- 1:10:24they add some pitching. Depth in their bullpen.
- 1:10:26Get solidified. I think they're a lot better
- 1:10:29than they were last year. It's a better team to watch and
- 1:10:33they put up that ten runs in that 5th inning when I was
- 1:10:37there. No home.
- 1:10:40Runs. Just knocks dude.
- 1:10:41Just. Putting the ball in play, you
- 1:10:42have a line up that does that. Now I'm telling you it's
- 1:10:44different. Now I'm done my my parting.
- 1:10:56Question and I, I think I, I tweeted this out, post it or
- 1:11:00something. I don't think I, I don't think
- 1:11:02we talked about this at the end of the last episode.
- 1:11:04At least I hope we didn't. My parting question that I want
- 1:11:12that I want you listeners to think about.
- 1:11:15Do you think there's? Ever been?
- 1:11:17Two Major League home runs hit at the same second.
- 1:11:23Like we're talking wood hitting leather like split second.
- 1:11:30Do you think there's ever been a tie?
- 1:11:32A moment in time where two Major League Major League home runs
- 1:11:40have been hit? At the same exact moment.
- 1:11:42Is this a rhetorical question like episode?
- 1:11:44Ends with this or. Do you actually have an answer?
- 1:11:49No, I don't. Have an answer?
- 1:11:50It's a legitimate question and. That's why I said I wanted, I
- 1:11:52want to let it marinate, let people think on it, because
- 1:11:54there was a shocking amount of people that are like, yeah, oh,
- 1:11:57definitely had to have happened. I'm like, I he look here, hear
- 1:12:01me out. I I get it that like, you know,
- 1:12:05there's. A lot of games being played in
- 1:12:06a. Given day and in a given season,
- 1:12:08I get that, but the same I'm not talking like the same minute
- 1:12:13like oh, these two homers were both hit at ten O 4.
- 1:12:16I'm talking the same honestly, going even deeper, like even
- 1:12:22more more specific than. Just like a second.
- 1:12:26Like I'm talking like fractions of a second.
- 1:12:29Do you think there's ever been two home runs at the same same
- 1:12:32point in time? I I think no.
- 1:12:35I say yes, I think no. Are you do?
- 1:12:41You want to go back to work, I think, yeah, you've had, I think
- 1:12:45you've had some thoughts that are rattle.
- 1:12:46Yeah, there's there's whiteboards.
- 1:12:49And newspaper clippings and strings all back here all over
- 1:12:53the place. This four day weekend has gotten
- 1:12:55to your head a little bit. Yeah, it's.
- 1:12:59I need to. I need to.
- 1:13:00Get grounded, yeah. I need to come back down there.
- 1:13:05That's all I got you. Go ahead and think on that.
- 1:13:08And will do. Hit me up and if you're
- 1:13:10listening or watching, hit me up in the messages with your
- 1:13:13rationale, because I'm, I'm curious.
- 1:13:15I'm, I'm, I'm curious to hear the arguments for because I, I
- 1:13:19just don't think it's ever happened.
- 1:13:23No particular reason, no particular I mean it.
- 1:13:27It'd be impossible to track, I think.
- 1:13:29I don't think there's any way of ever knowing.
- 1:13:31So probably it's really an an answerless question.
- 1:13:34You're probably right. That's all I got.
- 1:13:37Don't get Jason. Curveballs, folks, we.
- 1:13:39Love you all and as always, looking forward to talking more
- 1:13:41baseball. With you guys soon.
- 1:13:42Until next time, stay filthy.
