• 0:16
Hello my fellow nerds. It is Megan with vigilante vibes
• 0:19
and I'm here with another character breakdown and I'm
• 0:21
  continuing my Marvel Mutant coverage.
• 0:24
And today it will be about Cannonball.
• 0:26
Who is Cannonball? Let's learn all about them.
• 0:29
Cannonball's first appearance was in Marvel Graphic novel #4
• 0:32
in September of 1982. Young Sam Guthrie, a Cannonball,
• 0:37
was the oldest of 10 kids and was only 11 when he got caught
• 0:41
up in a plot by some genetic offshoots of humanity called the
• 0:46
Deviants. They were doing experiments on
• 0:50
children to make themselves better, but a mysterious deviant
• 0:54
named Sledge showed up just in time to save Sam and the others,
• 0:57
wiping their memories of the whole thing.
• 1:00
Five years later, Sam's dad died and as the oldest, he felt like
• 1:04
it was his job to take care of his family.
• 1:06
He gave up a college scholarship, became a coal miner
• 1:10
just like his father. One day he and a Co worker got
• 1:13
trapped in a collapsing mine. The stress of trying to get out
• 1:16
triggered his mutant power and he was able to blast them both
• 1:19
to safety. A rogue member of the Hellfire
• 1:22
Club, Donald Pierce, found out about Sam's powers and tricked
• 1:26
him into working for him. Pierce sent Sam to fight
• 1:29
Professor Xavier and his new team, the New Mutants, but Sam
• 1:33
refused to hurt them and ended up teaming up with them to
• 1:36
defeat Pierce instead. Xavier realized Sam was had been
• 1:40
misled and invited him to join the New Mutants, giving him the
• 1:43
code name Cannonball. Sam wasn't very good at using
• 1:47
his powers at first. I don't know many mutants that
• 1:49
are good at it, so he felt awkward as the team's Co leader.
• 1:53
He did, however, become best friends with his teammate
• 1:55
Sunspot. Later, Sam saved the life of the
• 2:00
intergalactic rock star Lila Chaney and the two started
• 2:03
dating. If you want to know more about
• 2:04
Lila, I do have a character breakdown about her, so just
• 2:08
check my channel and learn all about all about her too.
• 2:11
During this time, he also teamed up with Spider Man to fight the
• 2:14
Incandescent Man. After a cosmic being called the
• 2:18
Beyonder killed and brought back most of the New Mutants, Sam
• 2:22
lost all knowledge he had gained about his powers and had to
• 2:24
start all over. The encounter also left the team
• 2:28
feeling pretty apathetic, so their headmaster, Magneto asked
• 2:33
the Hellfire Club's White Queen, Emma Frost for help.
• 2:36
She enrolled them in her Massachusetts Academy and
• 2:39
recruited them into her team, the Hellions.
• 2:42
Magneto eventually realized he had been tricked and fought to
• 2:47
get his students back, leading to a conflict with The Avengers.
• 2:51
When the new mutant sided with the Magneto, Frost gave in and
• 2:54
helped restore them back to their former selves.
• 2:57
Sam and Lila's romance got serious, and he asked her to
• 3:00
meet his family. She showed up with a crystal for
• 3:03
his mom, but he mistakenly thought she stole it when she
• 3:06
actually carved it herself. Lila left in a huff, but after
• 3:11
he saved her from a plane crash, he apologized.
• 3:14
Later, the New Mutants came to Lila's rescue when she was
• 3:17
kidnapped by an alien named Spider.
• 3:20
After saving her, Lila seemed to sacrifice herself to stop
• 3:23
Spiders other captives from causing chaos in the universe.
• 3:28
Sam was heartbroken, but when she later turned up alive, they
• 3:32
both realized their romance was over and that they had moved on
• 3:35
with their lives. When the time traveling mutant
• 3:38
soldier Cable took over the New Mutants and then turned them
• 3:43
into a strike team called the X Force, Sam found out he was
• 3:46
apparently an immortal mutant. Cable had travelled back in time
• 3:51
to specifically to find and guide him in a battle with the
• 3:54
Brotherhood of the Evil Mutants. Sam's blast field was messed up
• 3:58
by Fantasia and he seemingly was killed by Saron, but this just
• 4:04
triggered his immortality and he came back to life.
• 4:07
He started a romantic relationship with his teammate
• 4:10
Tabatha, also known as Boomer. When X Force was separated from
• 4:14
Cable, Sam took on the leadership role.
• 4:17
He eventually graduated to the X-Men, which put a strain on his
• 4:20
relationship with Tabatha. Later, an ancient mutant named
• 4:24
Celine made him question his mortality, raising questions
• 4:29
that still have yet to be answered.
• 4:31
The X-Men sent Sam to spy on grade on Creed, a presidential
• 4:36
candidate who was very very anti mutant.
• 4:39
Sam went undercover as Samsung Gun 3 and joined Creed Staff,
• 4:46
earning him his trust before Creed was assassinated.
• 4:50
When he returned to the X-Men, he found himself fighting
• 4:53
Gladiator, an almost invulnerable warrior from the
• 4:58
Shire Empire's Imperial Guard. Gladiator came to Earth to force
• 5:02
the X-Men to help him. With some creative use of his
• 5:06
powers, Sam was able to withstand Gladiator's strongest
• 5:09
attack and defeat him. Sam eventually left the X-Men to
• 5:12
go home and care for his sick mother.
• 5:14
He ran into the Deviants again, but he didn't remember their
• 5:18
first encounter. He got help from the X Force to
• 5:20
fight them and rejoin the team afterwards.
• 5:24
Sam became the leader of the X Force again just before they
• 5:27
were called in to help a former spy named Pete Wisdom recover a
• 5:31
downed satellite. After his mission, his memories
• 5:35
of his first encounter with the Deviants were restored.
• 5:38
He later asked Wisdom to give the team a new purpose, and
• 5:41
Wisdom introduced them to the world of Black Ops.
• 5:45
After Wisdom faked his own death, Sam took over and
• 5:48
continued the mission until the X Force was seemingly killed in
• 5:51
a massive explosion. They later resurfaced, but a new
• 5:55
media friendly team had taken the X Force name and trademarked
• 5:58
it. Sam went on to join Xavier's X
• 6:03
Corporation, a global search and rescue team for the oppressed
• 6:06
mutants. After a disastrous mission that
• 6:10
resulted in his team mate Darkside's death, he desperately
• 6:13
needed a fresh start. He rekindled his romance with
• 6:16
Lila and met with the weather manipulating mutant Storm.
• 6:21
He saw her X-Men team's role as Global Peacekeeper as the
• 6:25
opportunity he was looking for and accepted her job.
• 6:28
Offered to join when Storm's team became the government
• 6:33
  approved Extreme Sanctions executive.
• 6:37
That is what that is so much in my mouth.
• 6:42
Oh, that's a weird thing to say. That was a mouthful.
• 6:46
They moved back into Xavier's mansion.
• 6:48
Sam was injured in a fight with the extra dimensional Fury and
• 6:52
had to temporarily lead the team in order to recover.
• 6:57
Back home, Cable asked him to rejoin X Force to fight an
• 7:00
ancient evil being called the Scorn.
• 7:03
Sam refused, saying Cable wasn't trustworthy, and they fought.
• 7:08
After he was defeated, he was recruited into the Mutant
• 7:11
Liberation Front by its new leader, a future version of
• 7:15
Cable's ally Domino, who was pretending to be a villain named
• 7:20
  Strife. The Mutant Liberation Front
• 7:23
teamed up with the X Force, Wolverine and the Fantastic Four
• 7:26
to fight the Scorn, who was defeated at the apparent cost of
• 7:30
Cable's life. Sam, his former X Force teammate
• 7:34
Siren, and Deadpool then went to fine Cable, whose essence was
• 7:39
  scattered across different alternate Earths.
• 7:43
They collected it. They brought it back to their
• 7:45
own world, where a mutant tech quiz named Forge was able to
• 7:48
restore him. After M Day, Sam returned to the
• 7:52
mansion, shocked to find that his sister Melody had lost her
• 7:56
  powers. More recently, Sam joined
• 7:59
Rogue's strike team after Serafina, a member of the hyper
• 8:03
evolved Children of the Vault, got into his mind and made him
• 8:07
think they were married and had a family.
• 8:09
  Which is weird. Super weird.
• 8:12
Sam was deeply upset by his psychic violation and eventually
• 8:17
got over it after defeating Serafina.
• 8:21
So that is Cannonball. He's he has such a confusing
• 8:25
life, the poor guy. But yeah, you don't see much of
• 8:28
Cannonball these days and I feel like that should change.
• 8:31
So as always, I have some comics for you to check out to get to
• 8:35
know Cannonball even better. If I missed any or you think
• 8:37
there are some better ones people should check out, just
• 8:39
let me know in the comments because these are the ones I've
• 8:42
read. I haven't read all of Marvel
• 8:43
Comics and I probably never will.
• 8:47
So starting off Hellfire Gala from 2023, Dead X-Men number one
• 8:53
  through 4, Extreme X-Men #24 X-Men volume to numbers 191 to
• 9:02
192, and I'd highly recommend the Nycesia Coppola run from X
• 9:09
Force from 1991. So I hope you learned something.
• 9:13
I hope you got to know Cannonball even better, and I
• 9:15
hope you like and subscribe so you don't miss any more of these
• 9:18
character breakdowns that I put out.
• 9:20
With that being said, have a marvelous day.
