Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: The dial has shifted in farming and emissions
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I've been reflecting this field Day's week on how much
- 0:03Speaker 1: the dial has shifted on farming and emissions in this country.
- 0:07Speaker 1: We had Chris Hopkins on the Herald Now program on
- 0:10Speaker 1: Tuesday admitting that essentially they don't currently have a policy
- 0:15Speaker 1: on putting agriculture into the ets. It was a signature
- 0:19Speaker 1: policy platform under the Adourn government. We had to do it.
- 0:23Speaker 1: They told us it was a moral not to. Farmers
- 0:25Speaker 1: had to pay a higher price, and who cares if
- 0:27Speaker 1: its cotwo or is methane or whatever emissions or emissions.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Labour is now open to ditching that all together and
- 0:34Speaker 1: softening its tone on farmers. This is happening for two reasons. One,
- 0:39Speaker 1: people are alive to the fact that without our strong
- 0:41Speaker 1: agricultural export prices, and we're looking at this after six
- 0:44Speaker 1: this morning, our regions would feel a lot more like
- 0:46Speaker 1: our main centers right now, economically depressed and limping along
- 0:51Speaker 1: like the Art Tetty. Actually selling a bunch of stuff
- 0:54Speaker 1: we already know how to do well is exactly what
- 0:57Speaker 1: a small trading nation like ours should be doing. Number Two,
- 1:01Speaker 1: the government has successfully, i think changed the narrative on emissions,
- 1:05Speaker 1: basically through repetition. Our farmers are the most efficient in
- 1:09Speaker 1: the world. The world demands meat and dairy. They like
- 1:13Speaker 1: eating and drinking our stuff. If we cut back and
- 1:18Speaker 1: burn the farmers bite the hand that feeds our regional economies.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Someone else steps in to make that global demand and
- 1:25Speaker 1: you guessed it. Higher emitting meat and dairy products are
- 1:29Speaker 1: sold to the world. So, for reasons of basic economics
- 1:32Speaker 1: and political reality, the dials been shifted on farming and
- 1:37Speaker 1: emissions and labors. Well, a little late to the party,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but at least acknowledging the landscape has well and truly changed.
