Transcript
- 0:04This production is brought to you by the Reesas Bell. Hello everybody, my
- 0:09name is Justin Greenberg and this is Film Reel And what better month to be
- 0:14talking about the Christmas classics Home Alone and Home Alone Two than in the middle
- 0:19of March. Although this is a podcast, you can listen to this whenever.
- 0:23I was talking with my buddy Liam a few days ago and we were
- 0:27discussing how I personally adore the first Home Alone, and Liam was adamant that
- 0:35the sequel Home Alone two was the superior film, and we got into sort
- 0:40of a debate. So I figured, why the hell not bring him on
- 0:43the show, and we're going to have this debate right here on Film Reel.
- 0:47So Liam, how's it going, buddy, It's going good. Thank
- 0:51you for having me. I'm glad we get to have a bit of a
- 0:54longer form debate on this. This is something that I didn't know I was
- 0:58very passionate about. Yeah, something I have found myself very passionate about over
- 1:03the past week or so. So happy to be here. Thanks for having
- 1:06me on, Justin. Yeah, Liam, you're a very smart individual,
- 1:08which is shocking that you would say something so fucking stupid and by the way
- 1:12you can curse. I let everyone know that you could curse, So,
- 1:15uh yeah, this is cool. Is there a curse you want to say?
- 1:19Uh? Shit? I guess that's the first shit. Yeah, that's
- 1:22a good one. You think the home alone movies would be better if they
- 1:25were saying like shit and fuck while getting it because Joe Peshy's was in these
- 1:30movies and he's known for being like the greatest cursor in all the movies,
- 1:34and he was actually afraid of cursing up yeah, because you know, he's
- 1:38like like whenever he gets hard, he sort of speaks in the like yeah,
- 1:42like a gibber yeah, like a Sims language. So he was worried
- 1:47that he was actually gonna let one slip. But I think I don't know.
- 1:51I think they could have gone the route of maybe having the one curse
- 1:53word in there, but they sort of kept kept the clean. Well.
- 1:57Yeah, I remember, like, especially in the the eighties nineties, the
- 2:00rating was a little bit different, like you could get away with saying a
- 2:04shit yeah every now and then, like once you said fuck, like that
- 2:07was yeah, too far with the PG. But I think of Back to
- 2:10the Future, that's nineteen eighty five, that's a PG movie and they say
- 2:14shit a number of yeah, yeah, yeah. So well, even prior
- 2:17to that, there was no such thing, as I think back to the
- 2:21future, is that PG or PG thirteen. I believe the first one at
- 2:24least is PG. Well there was, Believe it or not, there was
- 2:28no such thing as a PG thirteen rating until nineteen eighty four. Two movies
- 2:31came out, Temple of Doom and Gremlins, both Steven Spielberg produced and directed.
- 2:38Spielberg directed Temple of Doom and he was like, this movie's kind of
- 2:42gruesome. We need to have something in between because it's not quite are but
- 2:46it's not pig so we need to have something in the middle. But yeah,
- 2:50you're right. You know, kids' movies were allowed to get away with
- 2:53more graphic material ya smoking cigarettes and having the foul language. But Home Alone
- 3:00sort of kept it, you know, grounded in a in a family friendly
- 3:04thing, and I think that was important for its success. Also, I
- 3:07think the Christmas thing kind of ties into that too. I don't think,
- 3:10especially if you're marketing it towards kids like I think they wanted to keep it
- 3:15clean. By the way, all three back to the Futures are PG.
- 3:17So really, I wasn't sure about the the second one because I feel like
- 3:21that was maybe the most risk sale. Woman's breasts are dangling out. They
- 3:24definitely say shit a lot. I mean, I love the Back of the
- 3:29Future movies. Yes, I think a lot of people give Back to the
- 3:31Future three a lot of shit. But I used to not like it,
- 3:35but I've come to appreciate it a bit more. I actually and we will
- 3:38talk about Home Alone, I promise. I think home I think Back to
- 3:42the Future two is so overrated. Hm hm. And here's why. And
- 3:46this is the same thing that it has to do with Home Alone. Back
- 3:50to the Future two is just regurgitating pretty much, and this one is it's
- 3:55very you know, obvious, because they're literally showing scenes from the first movie,
- 4:00but they're taking the same formula, everything that worked in that first movie
- 4:04and just doing it over again. And to me, I find that to
- 4:09be very lazy. This is which is the main thing that I hate about
- 4:14Home Alone two. You have something that's so original. I can't think of
- 4:18any movie that was like Home Alone, and then two years later you just
- 4:24want to make more money. Because when Home Alone came out, it was
- 4:27the most successful comedy of all time. It was in fact a top ten
- 4:30highest grossing movie all time of all time at the end of its release,
- 4:35and they just wanted to make more money, so they just, you know,
- 4:40crapped out another movie within two years, and all originality was lost.
- 4:45They're just regurgitating the same jokes, the same setups, which is one of
- 4:48the reasons of many reasons why I think the original is superior. Well,
- 4:53I think that when it comes to this, we can and I don't know,
- 4:57we're definitely not going into the like three years four all alone. But
- 5:00that's where I feel like when the originality was lost because putting him in New
- 5:04York, I feel and again maybe that's just the New Yorker in me speaking,
- 5:08but there is something more special about him just being at home. I
- 5:11thought him being at home and his home neighborhood was a little he could have
- 5:15done a little bit with that. He could have maybe I feel like you
- 5:18have a smaller police department there if you if you show up to and I
- 5:23guess we're getting right down into it, but uh like if you show up
- 5:27at you know, the thirty second Precinct in the middle of New York City.
- 5:30They're just like, okay, whatever, like we're not gonna I feel
- 5:32like take it as seriously as a smaller town would like, Oh, you're
- 5:36a McAllister, we know the mccallis is this and that I know your cousin.
- 5:40But they showed the ineptitude of the police force. There's the scene where
- 5:44you know, the mom's calling and you get transferred from one station to the
- 5:47It's not like Chicago is this uh you know, bumble you know, uh
- 5:51Andy Griffith's sort of neighborhood. Right, It's still a hustle and bustle city,
- 5:56but I get what you're saying. And now they're in the suburbs at
- 5:59least, you know, like there's probably some sort of but all the neighbors
- 6:01are gone though, right, and again, this is a different time.
- 6:05We've all seen the memes of if this movie took place in modern day,
- 6:09he'd have a cell phone, he'd called, but the phone lines went down.
- 6:12All the neighbors are on vacation. He's alone. He's a trapped,
- 6:15you know, scared kid. He's he's home alone. And I just I
- 6:19feel that original movie is superior in pretty much every single way. Every way
- 6:27from the home setting that you're in the entire time. I think this is
- 6:30another pivotal thing because everyone loves the climax of these movies that is like when
- 6:35you're a kid, especially when you're when you get older, I actually appreciate
- 6:40different things in the movie, the relationship with the mom and the kid,
- 6:44the old man. But when you're a kid, what you really love is
- 6:47the end of the movie when it becomes a Looney Tune short where he's just
- 6:51you know, setting up traps and whatnot. And I think why the first
- 6:55movie works so well is because you were in that setting the entire of the
- 7:00movie. So you know all the inns and the outs of the house because
- 7:03you're there the entire time. You see the traps throughout. You know,
- 7:09he sees the Christmas decorations, he puts those up, he's playing with the
- 7:12micro machines in the beginning, you know, the fishhooks, all this stuff.
- 7:15You're around it, and you're able to relate to it more so because
- 7:20you're there when it's his home with a whole family there. You're there when
- 7:26he's home alone, and then you're there when he's protecting the home. Whereas
- 7:29in home alone two, he's sort of out and about. He goes from
- 7:32the hotel room, he's at the toy store, and then he goes to
- 7:36a random relative's house. Yeah, that hasn't abandoned. It's like you're just
- 7:42introduced to the fact that there's another place for him to set up traps pretty
- 7:46much. Yeah, but that takes away, that takes away from the specialty
- 7:50of protecting your home. But I think at this point, now he's protecting
- 7:55himself. I think that's what becomes the biggest thing is now he's alone in
- 7:59New York. His only safe haven is this hotel where the staff hates his
- 8:03guts. Already, he already feels unsafe for He's a piece of shit,
- 8:05let's be honest. Well that's that and and you know what, that's my
- 8:07biggest thing with the first movie. So in the beginning, you don't want
- 8:11to root for this kid. He's just I'm leaving alone, like I don't
- 8:16want to live. I'm rooting against this kid, if anything, you know,
- 8:18like I'm rooting for Marvin Harry. So seeing that, like in going
- 8:22into the second movie, it's a bit more endearing. You know, you
- 8:26see the human side of Kevin, and you start to root for him as
- 8:28the first one goes on. But in the beginning, it's like this kid,
- 8:31it's good that he's alone. Maybe it'll wake him up a little bit,
- 8:35like a slap on the side of the head or something. But I
- 8:37I but but to counteract that, there is growth. There is growth in
- 8:43the character. He's a little shit at the beginning of the movie. He
- 8:48learns to fend for himself, he realizes the errors in his way, and
- 8:54then he rekindles a relationship with his mom at the end, and that's a
- 8:58very special, touching moment, even though the whole family arrives a minute later,
- 9:03but she's the first one to greet him, and that's very special.
- 9:07And he's changed from the beginning of the movie to the end of the movie,
- 9:11and then everything just resets like it's a sitcom, you know, at
- 9:15the end of a Simpsons episode, Homer learns a lesson, and then the
- 9:18next episode and he's back to being an asshole. This is the same thing.
- 9:20There's zero growth, he's back to being a piece of shit, and
- 9:24it's again regurgitating the same thing. I think you lose that special moment between
- 9:31the mom and the sun. Can you admit that that is not there in
- 9:35the sequels. Definitely, I think because at this point, what you know,
- 9:41relationship is there to rekindle, because I think in the beginning of the
- 9:45second one he was a bit again, he's still a brat, but he
- 9:46was a little bit less of a piece of shit than he was the start
- 9:50of the beginning of the first Home Alone. Yeah, I thought that was
- 9:54amazing. Like, I want to I want to kick my TV. Almost
- 9:56I rewatched Home Alone one in preparation. I wanted to see if I can,
- 10:01if I missed anything, if maybe it could spark something, And just
- 10:05watching it all over again, I was like Jesus Christ, like, I
- 10:07don't want to root for this kid. I don't want to do anything.
- 10:09So yeah, the character development and him kind of the rekindling of the relationship
- 10:15with his mom, it was nice to see. But I think it goes
- 10:18back to what you were saying when you were a kid, the climax of
- 10:22the movie was the main piece. It wasn't the character development or the growth
- 10:26of everybody. It was about the action and the fun scenes and the battle
- 10:30plan and everything. I think when you're a kid, though, Also,
- 10:33you don't see that he's being a Bret. I mean, especially when I
- 10:37was growing up, there were a lot of characters that were like this.
- 10:41You know, they redid Dennis the Menace a few years, like they tried
- 10:43to recapture There's so many Home Alone clones after this movie. Like this movie
- 10:50was a juggernaut. I mentioned the top ten highest grossing movie of all time,
- 10:54almost five hundred million dollars. I'm sure the budget was not even like,
- 10:58yeah, eighteen eighteen million dollar budget, that's increasing when it grossed four
- 11:01hundred and seventy six million, and that's not including VHS sales. That's the
- 11:07box office, which is so much because everyone owned this movie, including me.
- 11:11And also that could be a thing as to why I have a special
- 11:15place for the first one. I never owned Home Alone two on VHS,
- 11:18so we would rewatch the original one constantly. Where's the second one? You'd
- 11:22catch it every now and then on TV, or you'd rent it once in
- 11:26a while. As far as other things that I do love about the first
- 11:31Home Alone that you do not get in Home Alone Too, I'll say it
- 11:33now, I'll say it a million times. John Candy in that movie is
- 11:39so funny. It's all improvised stuff. You know, him and Katherine O'Hara
- 11:43had this relationship through Second City, so they have this chemistry that I just
- 11:50find so endearing. He he I think is the best side character in any
- 11:56of the movies, and they don't have anything like that. Who is that
- 12:01character in Home Alone? Two? Yeah, there really isn't that character,
- 12:05And although I don't really think there is a situation where there need to be
- 12:09that character, because again, the only reason why John Candy was there was
- 12:13because she could hit a ride with him and she can get back to Chicago,
- 12:16So that was there's no opportunity for it. So I guess maybe if
- 12:20you force it, that could have been worse. But I agree with you
- 12:22not having first of all, John Candy as a whole in the movie,
- 12:28and then second just not having that fun side character where there's that endearing relationship
- 12:33being formed out of out of nothing really because in the beginning she was almost
- 12:35a little bit like who the hell are you? Yeah, Airport, So
- 12:39that I will give to Home Alone one is the John Candy and you will
- 12:45give this, you will give that. Old Man Marley is so much better
- 12:50than Pigeon Lady. Pigeon Lady I don't know if it's just because I'm creeped
- 12:54out by the way she looked. There was a lady in my neighborhood we
- 12:58called a bag lady that looked like her. I don't know. That turns
- 13:01me off. There's no again, there's no growth of her character. I
- 13:05think that's very important to me. I want these characters to be one thing
- 13:09at the beginning of the movie and then be something else. You're taking the
- 13:13same premise. Okay, he sees this scary figure. He saw the scary
- 13:16figure in the Old Man. It's the same shit. And then you realize
- 13:20there's a heart of gold underneath the scariness. And then Old Man Marley takes
- 13:26that extra step and gets a relationship with his son. That's a really touching
- 13:31moment. I mean, that's like the whole premise of that first Home Alone
- 13:35movie is having a broken family of sorts, whether it's Kevin and his mom
- 13:41or Old Man Marley and his son. And then they reunite at the end
- 13:45of the movie. And that is so touching. When Kevin's looking out the
- 13:48window and sees them reunite. Whereas Pigeon Lady, what happens with Pigeon lady.
- 13:52Listen, she's still homeless. She sells crack probably, And this is
- 13:58where I think you're missing it. Are you you dehumanizing homeless people? Yes,
- 14:03you like going to the city and seeing homeless people, I know,
- 14:07But I think, but I think the Pigeon Lady represents that there is no
- 14:09matter what's going on with these people, there still is a human underneath everything.
- 14:15But it's a Christmas movie. There should be some miracle, like she
- 14:18gets a job at the Toy Story. You could have done something right.
- 14:20The pigeon lady, who all she has, her whole life has been birds,
- 14:24pigeons in the middle of New York City. Now she has a friend
- 14:26of some sort. He gives her a gift. I know they'll never see
- 14:28each other idea. I know they'll never see each other again, but she'll
- 14:31always have that, like other half of the turtle that she sold that for
- 14:35crack. Are you kidding me? You think she kept that gold turtle dove.
- 14:39No, it was like porcelain or something whatever it was. It was
- 14:41sold immediately by New Year's because she needs to buy more crack or food for
- 14:46her pigeons. Well, that's the thing. I when you she doesn't look
- 14:50like the standard crackhead. She still has some weight on her, you know,
- 14:52she's not she's definitely like a drunk. Yeah, but everybody is.
- 14:56Everybody's a drunk nowadays. Every buddy it goes home and drinks something after work.
- 15:01You know, it's just it's it's it's glorified when you have a home,
- 15:05when you live on the street, it's like, ugh, you could
- 15:07be saving up for an apartment. It's like, well, you know,
- 15:09maybe she wants a beer every now and then. Do you not think,
- 15:13though, does the originality not annoy you? Because well it would be hypocritical
- 15:18because I will say I do like Terminator too, which is sort of regurgitating
- 15:22Terminator. I do like Aliens, which is sort of regurgitating Alien. But
- 15:28when it comes to comedies, they're taking like joke for joke. They're setting
- 15:31up the same setup, whether it's you know, the angels with filthy souls,
- 15:37like you're doing the same bit. But I think the difference between the
- 15:39movies that you just referenced in this one is that this is a children's movie
- 15:43and that this is this is aim towards kids. So growing up as a
- 15:48kid when there was something very different Like I never watched Home Alone three because
- 15:52it was two different, different families, different kid. I was like,
- 15:54I can't this is it was a culture shock almost. So if you have
- 15:56a totally different premise, like what would have been a better plot for Home
- 16:03Alone two, No movie, just don't make it. You don't. He
- 16:07didn't make a sequel to It's a Wonderful Life. You just you don't need
- 16:10to make sequels. Obviously all about money. It's clearly they shit this movie
- 16:15out in two years. Think about this. The Batman movie just got pushed
- 16:18another year. It's gonna be four years and four and a half years from
- 16:22Batman to the Batman too. But then again, there's a lot more like
- 16:26that goes into a Batman movie than Home Alone. I'd say, oh,
- 16:30yeah, for sure, for sure. But I think this was, Uh,
- 16:33we gotta make these movies because this kid's gonna go through puberty and he's
- 16:37not gonna be charming anymore. He's probably gonna end up like Pigeon Lady.
- 16:41They should do something with this franchise because they've tried to do like there.
- 16:45I think there's six Home Alone movies if I'm not mistaken. They had the
- 16:49three that were in theaters, and then I think there was one where they
- 16:53brought back Marv, but he's played by French Stewart. Who is that is
- 16:57the name of an actor. I think they made a fifth one. I
- 17:00think recently they just made a sixth one with some little British kid and I
- 17:03believe Buzz had a cameo in it. But I don't think Buzz will be
- 17:07in any movies anymore because he's been accused of rape. Oh I did not
- 17:12know that. That's a down armer. Yeah, but as far as Home
- 17:18Alone too, I will say I don't hate the movie. I definitely do
- 17:21not hate the movie. It has some very funny moments. I was just
- 17:25playing the clip to you earlier when he throws the brick at them. Suck
- 17:27brick, kid, suck. It's funny. I still will watch it anytime
- 17:36I, you know, turn on the TV and it's on, I'm going
- 17:38to watch it. I just watched it, you know, this past Christmas.
- 17:41But I think because you mentioned they're kids movies, but to me,
- 17:45they're more important than just a generic kid movie. They're not one of these
- 17:49dumb kids movies, especially the first one. I think it's something that old
- 17:56people can, like young people could, like black kids can, like white
- 17:57kids can, like it is something that is generational, and uh, I
- 18:03think if they were to make a sequel, I think I think the best
- 18:07thing would be to just not make a sequel. I think it does transcend
- 18:11being just a kids movie, and I think that's obviously where the character development
- 18:15of Kevin and then of the neighbor where that comes into place. But I
- 18:19think you're really discounting how much you know it means for the humanization of somebody
- 18:26who has looked at as subhuman. You're on this picion. Not that I'm
- 18:30banking on it, but it's just you make it such a huge part.
- 18:33Like my biggest thing with Home Alone one is like there's so many holes in
- 18:37it, Like nobody had to wake up to use the bathroom and notice that
- 18:41they were late and behind schedule, Like there were fifty people in the fucking
- 18:45house, Like Fuller didn't have to get up to take a piss at some
- 18:48point in the middle of that. No, that's a good point, but
- 18:51like it just at some point I feel like there there had to have been
- 18:53somebody like you know, hey, you know it's seven thirty nobody's awake right
- 18:57now. That's the first one. But the second one, you're saying the
- 19:00same thing's gonna happen. This kid's gonna be left alone again. But but
- 19:06it wasn't. He went He went the wrong way at the airport, chasing
- 19:10two Christmases in a row. Come on, there's so many holes in this.
- 19:12There were two years apart, I think in the movie. Well in
- 19:15the movie, was it? I know in real life there were two years.
- 19:18Yeah, I'm assuming it was back to back Christmas. Yes, it
- 19:21was, you know, two years apart, nineteen ninety and nineteen ninety two.
- 19:23But Liam, I know we were short on time here. Yes,
- 19:27I still can debate this. Uh a die, My dying wish will be
- 19:33to change your opinion on this. I don't think it's gonna happen though.
- 19:37You're pretty dead set that it's home alone too. And another thing too,
- 19:41is it's just not very relatable. Like Kevin has this giant house in Chicago
- 19:45with all of these different knick knacks and stuff. He can use all this
- 19:48stuff. It's cooler when you make something out of nothing, which finds something.
- 19:52When he finds something in that like house, that's being you know it's
- 19:56under construction, it's all gutted and everything. He's using the paint and can
- 20:00the bricks. Oh yeah, I haven't seen those before. I like them
- 20:03the first time. But like, and by the way, the suck brick
- 20:07kid line would have been a lot funnier if it was a rated R movie,
- 20:08like going back to that. Yeah, like they could have you know
- 20:11something there, But there is edits out there actually that take the footage and
- 20:17they add blood to it, so they're getting pelted with paint cans and you'll
- 20:22see like bones break and blood go everywhere. So there has been some fun
- 20:26with it. I don't know what you do with the home Alone franchise from
- 20:29here on out. Obviously it's a big seller. They still sell the merchandise
- 20:33I have heard on the DVD commentary track actually for the first movie, Macaulay
- 20:40Culkin mentions that he would like to make a movie where Marvin Harry have reformed
- 20:45and Kevin ends up being the robber and he tries to like steal stuff and
- 20:52cause mischief to them when they're senior citizens. That's actually pretty fun. I
- 20:56think if there is something you do with it, that's the only thing.
- 20:59But don't make any ones without Kevin McAllister. I think we could all agree
- 21:03on that one, you know. But the other thing is critics hated these
- 21:07movies. In fact, I believe Home Alone three was the only ones.
- 21:11It was the only one that Ciskel or Ebert actually cared for. But like
- 21:17most critics saw these movies as dumb, were it was shocking. I think
- 21:22I think they're well made movies. They're shot well, there's great musical choices,
- 21:26good good acting, and it's just a fun time. I'm glad you
- 21:27brought up the music because I think the second one because the first one.
- 21:32There is the score, and I do love the score. John Williams score
- 21:37is tremendous. But then the musical choices, I mean the run Run Rudolph
- 21:41when they're going to the airport, or rocking around the Christmas tree with the
- 21:45dancing the shadow. What is there in Home Alone two? All Alone on
- 21:49Christmas is a good one, and the cool Jark, Yeah cool is another
- 21:53good one. So I feel like there's more and there was. It was
- 21:56less scory there. There was obviously the original Home Alone song that was used
- 22:02throughout the movie. But yeah, I do like the studio released songs that
- 22:10they just kind of throw in there that and I'm not thrown in, it's
- 22:11strategically placed in. But just I like that when you take a song and
- 22:15then almost give it a new meaning, or when you think of this song,
- 22:19you don't think of you know, the artist. You think of Home
- 22:22Alone, for example, Oh anytime, anytime those songs, you know,
- 22:29but when he's doing the aftershave thing, I don't think of Christmas, I
- 22:33think of Home Alone. Right, So I think both these movies, regardless
- 22:37of what we think, they're both classics. Of course, they both should
- 22:41be watched every Christmas and h or March. Yeah, or March as I
- 22:47found myself on Tuesday, March twelfth up at night watching Home Alone, and
- 22:52it was an interesting sight. But all right, Liam, that's gonna do
- 22:56it for this additional film. Real, thank you for joining me. I
- 22:59think we should have some more debates, so we should talk some back to
- 23:02the future or we'll maybe revisit this topic. Absolutely. Thanks for having me
- 23:07on, Jess. Of course, Liam, have a go one, buddy,
- 23:08and have a good one to all the listeners out there. Bye bye.
