- 0:00SPEAKER_02: I felt very limited on what I could achieve based on my own perception of myself and
- 0:04SPEAKER_02: and so because I didn't think in high school
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: that boys would like me I thought well I'll just be funny then or
- 0:10SPEAKER_02: because I didn't think I would be a great smart scientist I would reserve myself
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: to doing only the arts or only things that I felt good at and I restricted myself
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: a lot based on what I thought my capacity was
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: welcome to the divine worth podcast where we are letting go
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: of our self doubt anxiety fear limiting beliefs so that we can step into
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: the divine roles that god has for us i am your host life coach karen papin
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: and together we are embracing our divine worth and potential welcome to
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: the divine worth podcast our guest today is annie onton annie is from lehigh utah
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: and a total victim of god's plan being much cooler than her own i love how she says
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: that
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: After serving a mission in Tampa,
- 0:57SPEAKER_01: Florida and graduating from BYU,
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: she has worked as a social media strategist,
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: comedian,
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: aquarium educator,
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: amateur American ninja warrior,
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: and is currently in the throes of going to law school in the fall
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: to continue her work in international human rights.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: That is awesome.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: So, Annie, thank you.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Welcome.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: Welcome.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: And thank you for being here.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: And thank you for reading out that bio.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: It is random and you did great.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: i love it i love it because it's it just shows that you have like this whole scope
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: to you right you know some people would call
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: that like i don't know adhd doctors have uh
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: but it's no it's great i i feel like i i feel like i'm the the cautionary sign
- 1:40SPEAKER_02: of making a bucket list and praying about it
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: because god just might like tick those things off and it's really fun so i love
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: that i think it's i i it's really good like i really do
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: well i'm someone who has like a lot of different interests and
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: so anytime someone is like you know has experience in this and then that and
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: then this and it's just it's awesome it's like it shows that you're willing to learn
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: and and grow too okay so to begin i want
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: to ask you what how how would you what is divine worth to you
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: I think for me divine worth was something that first
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: of all you like you grow up hearing all the time especially if you grow up in
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: the LDS church right you learn about individual worth was one of
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: the personal progress principles
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: triple p as we say and uh and so i think you hear that that term quite a bit
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: but i think it didn't super hit me until recently just this idea for me that it is
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: that every person in the planet
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: has a soul and that soul is beautiful period like full stop and like i think
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: that we'll probably get into this and i know that you talk a lot about this
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: but you know there's lots of things that where we add a comma to that and we add a
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: but or an and and try to put different conditions on on the worth of our soul or
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: the beauty of our soul and no that's no like divine worth is the fact that
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: because you are alive because you're here on this earth because you have a soul
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: it is beautiful you have worth and god is obsessed with you
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: and he loves you no matter what i love i i have
- 3:19SPEAKER_01: a feeling i'm just gonna be like oh i love how you said that so i love problem
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: beyond everything i think
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: but i love that you said god is obsessed with you and and just that answer too
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: because the question that comes into my mind is what if i with every person
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: that i met strive to see the beauty that is within their soul
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: yeah because i think i've done this before and uh you're perfect
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: so i don't think you've done this before but maybe somebody else has i have
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: but we'll say they're great but right oh i this person's awesome but you know
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: or you know and i think that we even to ourselves we'll say that and we need to put
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: the period we need to put the full stop
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: right we need to because so much happens when you just like look at this person
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: and separate them from their decisions separate them from their circumstances from
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: the the hand life dealt to them and the cards that they took willingly and say you
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: you are a person and you are a soul and god is obsessed with you and that's that's
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: the end of the story how does that change the way i see these people
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: and often pretty much always what that means is that i get to feel a little bit of
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: that love and i get i get to have eyes to see just a little bit more these people
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: for who they really are and not just the labels that we just slap on people you know
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: or the you know the judgments we make after having a couple conversations with them
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: or even just our natural preclusion based on
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: what we prefer in people you know there's some things that have helped you see
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: that i think there's a couple things number one i love storytelling i i was an
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: musical theater kid in high school or probably musical as a musical theater kid
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: in high school or you could probably just say a theater kid
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: because I wasn't super musical but I loved growing up acting
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: and I thought I thought I was going to be like this really big hotshot actor and
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: the dream has changed but at the time part of the reason I loved it
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: so much was this idea of really understanding where people are coming from
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: you know you could take a villain in a shakespearean play
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: and say well what is making them make that decision and i think that that built up
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: a lot of empathy and i think that that's why god allowed that to be in my life for
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: a really long time really intensely is so that i could learn that empathy and
- 5:37SPEAKER_02: so that's that's one thing and i think you can get that not if you're listening
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: to this podcast you do not have to be an actor don't go sign up for acting classes
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: unless you want to
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: but even just listening
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: to stories storytelling right listening you know watching movies or books
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: or reading books watching television listening to stories i think that that builds
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: a lot of empathy for people and then i think you know finding stories
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: in real life too i
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: meeting people and i think going on my mission meeting a lot of people in florida
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: so many different types of people in florida and i love all of them
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: that really added a lot to the stories i gathered of different people you know
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: because one day you would be meeting somebody that struggled
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: hard with drug addiction and did not have a home and had many kids
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: with many different people and was living you know you're in their house
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: and there's cockroaches crawling on your leg you know and then you would meet people
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: and they had six columns in their house
- 6:30SPEAKER_02: because they were very they were very blessed and had lots of money and
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: had different things.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: but number two there's other ways you can find those stories too like i you know i
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: took a trip and went to a different country and went to church at
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: that different country and i saw how they interact i saw some beautiful women
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: in early society sharing their stories and it was incredible
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: or at work i work at an aquarium right now because why not putting
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: that advertising degree to good use and we drive to schools and we hold up snakes
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: and we say this this is a snake and we drive a lot with my co-workers and so
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: then you and a lot of these co-workers are from different places in the country and
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: so you get to ask what's your story
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: where are you from how did you get here and finding different stories so
- 7:37SPEAKER_01: that what this answer was a story and i'm sorry it was so long but i think
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: for me finding stories of people and understanding people holy and understanding
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: and seeking to see them not
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: as first impressions but as their stories as their experiences and really deeply try
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: to get to know a lot of different people love that we can learn a lot
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: when we're actually open to learning more about them and and what they've been
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: through and and how they feel about all that and just yeah
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: putting aside the judgments that can come and going deeper yeah
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: which actually i think is why the scriptures are
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: so awesome right is it's stories right and people who make interesting decisions
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: and people who like you would say hmm i i wouldn't sell my brother into slavery
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: because he has a cool coat but
- 8:26SPEAKER_02: we and sometimes we do want to do that but often we're able to look past
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: the past just the outside of that story and understand the value either
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: the lesson learned or what god's trying to communicate through the stories and
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: so you can do that in the scriptures you can do that in media and we can do it with
- 8:43SPEAKER_02: the real life people in our in our lives too
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: love that and i think going along with that it's like what are the ask questions
- 8:51SPEAKER_01: whether like if you're in the scriptures asking like one thing that came to me
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: the other day was i was thinking about eve we were in a i'm a secretary in
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: the release site presidency and we're planning okay what are we going to do
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: for mother's day and so we're talking about the women in the scriptures
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: and it's like well
- 9:09SPEAKER_01: look at what they went through like it was not easy
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: for them they did not have easy lives and yet they're these amazing women
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: and it's like what did they go through i mean look at eve and what she went
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: through she had two sons where one killed the other and it's like that seems
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: so unfathomable to me right but when we start asking questions
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: to really be like okay what did what are they going
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: through what might they have thought or felt or
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: what are the how did they end up coping with what they went through
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: because maybe that's the only way that they knew right yeah i love
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: that now i'm doing it yeah i think that that is so true and you know
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: as you're talking about it you know
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: that is how you know come follow me is now structured right is is you read it and
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: then you ask questions and you know you can see you know it it's so interesting to
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: here that we we grow up hearing all the time but when you start
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: to ask those questions i think that's when it really gets real again yeah if you're
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: i think about eve and adam as parents and like you said they have one
- 10:14SPEAKER_02: of their sons kill the other the courage
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: to have another son seth afterwards can you imagine that decision and
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: that conversation between adam and eve
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: as parents feeling like well we messed up you know in probably what would feel like
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: the worst you could ever mess up as parents right personal agency is a thing but
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: that feeling was probably there
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: you know perhaps you know god asked them to and saying are we are we ready
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: to do this are we willing to do this i can i can only imagine because i'm not
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: a mother but it's when you start to really think about the reality
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: of these situations that it becomes it becomes real so i like i love that example
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: so one of the things that you mentioned in your bio as i read it was you said you're
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: a total victim of god's plan being much cooler than your own and and then
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: kind of what you just said was like having sex
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: could have been something that god asked for them so i'd like to hear more
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: about your story now and how you've come to realize
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: that god's plan is much cooler okay um this is a good question i think i think it's
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: so interesting you know that we're talking about stories
- 11:25SPEAKER_02: and this this interaction i think i'm discovering a lot and it is reaffirming to me
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: that our stories in life really are based on the divine worth we have and and most
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: of all who god sees us as and what obstacles triumphs situations people he puts
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: in our life as a personal life plan
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: because he sees us he sees our worth he knows each and every one of us and
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: the life plan we need and the life plan that is personalized
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: to us that's my preface you can cut it out but i think for me
- 12:02SPEAKER_02: i'm very humbled because i grew up thinking that my life plan was going
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: to be one way i have always loved to laugh i've always been
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: a theater nerd like i said i've
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: always loved being creative and i have always used that as a shield and as a defense
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: as most comedians will will admit to because i think growing up i had a lot
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: of amazing people in my life and i had a lot of insecurities and so there was a lot
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: of thinking like well i'm not as smart as so and so so i can't be a doctor
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: and well right now in high school i'm not as beautiful as my best friend so and so
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: and so i'm not gonna be the
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: bombshell high school sweetheart i'm gonna be the funny best friend
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: and i think i i cast myself in my own story i felt very limited
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: on what i could achieve based on my own perception of myself and and so
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: because i didn't think in high school that
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: If the boys would like me, I thought well i'll just be funny then. Or because
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: i didn't think
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: i would be a great smart scientist
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: i would reserve myself to doing only the arts or
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: only things that i felt good at and
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: and i restricted myself all
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: a lot based on what i thought my capacity was because i think we live in a world
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: that really prides on capacity and on excel excelling at things and
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: so i almost limited myself to what are the things i'm very good at what are
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: the things that come naturally to me and those are my options and so for
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: a really long time i thought i was going to be the funny person
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: and i thought i was going to be an actor and that was great
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: but luckily god had other plans and he he sent me on a mission and i went on
- 13:43SPEAKER_02: a mission because i knew it was a it was a good thing to do
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: and i loved god i i did love god and i i thought this is going to be great
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: and i guess this is really where the story begins is i remember getting so excited
- 13:55SPEAKER_02: to go on my mission
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: and i was like where am i gonna go we get called
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: to florida this is great everyone's like are you disappointed and i was like rude no
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: and i get set apart and as i get set apart i i can remember a couple things
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: but i really remember one thing that was said to me and it shocked me and
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: the words were something along the lines of you need to remember
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: that this is not your mission this is the lord's mission
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: and i was like rude excuse me what
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: how dare you think i think that and i was it took me aback i i was rebuked
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: as they say and but it really made me think what does that look like to to go on
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: the lord's mission versus my mission and when on my when i went
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: on my mission it meant a couple things it meant not for my own strengths but because
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: of circumstance i got placed in leadership really early and that meant i couldn't be
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: the funniest missionary in the mission
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: which was so hard because i'm hilarious and how dare i i was gonna be
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: the happy fun times funny missionary right i couldn't i couldn't be
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: that missionary it also meant because i was placed
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: in leadership very early i couldn't be the perfect missionary i couldn't be
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: the best leader because i was not ready for it and i had to ask myself am i willing
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: to sacrifice being a perfect missionary to being the lord's missionary
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: and very hard wasn't perfect at it but when i did my relationship
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: with god completely changed
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: because all of a sudden i didn't feel like i was just fighting him and like hoping
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: for one thing
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: being really scared he was going to say no so kind of ignoring him
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: until he said yes you know but it
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: allowed me to dialogue with god in a way i never had and be very real with him in a
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: way i ever had and the biggest blessing of all was hopefully trying to take that principle
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: after my mission right he asked me too
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: quit acting major at BYU hardest thing I've ever done I should have harder things
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: in my life but it was so hard and it was do I want to be my do I want
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: to live my life the way I my perfect life or do I want to live the Lord's life
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: and it was really hard but choosing
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: to try to live the life god had sent me it kept that relationship and that worth
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: that didn't come from me fulfilling circumstance but from me following the lord in
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: that relationship and it really just created the result was a sustained happiness
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: that came from nowhere else
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: this.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: And so it's kind of addictive where I was like, wait, never mind.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Tell me what to do.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: This is great.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: This is awesome.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: And now we're at the point where God's like, okay, slow down, make your own choices.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: And I'm all, no, but I, you know, but it's been really interesting, especially looking back.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: It's been seven years now since I left on my mission and oh my gosh, how much happier I am.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:25SPEAKER_02: I am so glad I didn't move to LA like I wanted to.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Some people can, it's great for them.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: Would have been not good for me.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: And how many times now I still get to be funny.
- 16:35SPEAKER_02: i still get to do acting sometimes i still get to do a lot of these things i wanted
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: to do and and now i get to do a lot of cool things
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: that i never thought i would go do i'm going to law school holy cow who let me go
- 16:47SPEAKER_02: to law school i don't know god i guess i get to work with a lot
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: of like international human rights holy cow i didn't know how to do that i get
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: to work at an aquarium so fun and so there's so many things that have added on
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: and i feel like that is kind of been
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: my story and feel free to edit this in whatever way makes sense because
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: that was kind of a long spiel but I think to just sum it up like I thought in
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: the beginning my story was a I have an idea for my life I need to set a goal I need
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: to make a plan I need to fulfill it and that is where my strength lies it's up
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: to my own practice my own grit my own hard work it's on me and that's a burden
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: and it's very limiting and so then when I let go of that idea
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: and gave up being the perfect version of my life to live the lord's life
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: for me it lifted a burden it opened up my opportunities
- 17:38SPEAKER_02: and it created this relationship with the lord that was so much more assuring
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: than self-assurement like it's it's lord assurement not self-assurement right and so
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: then it didn't matter if i was having a self-actualized day or not right and
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: on my worst days the lord was still there and i could then trust the plan
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: of like oh man i have done really bad today at doing anything
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: and that's okay because wait god knows me he knows i'm gonna be so bad
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: at doing stuff some days and he's still giving me these opportunities and
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: so i can trust that it's gonna be okay okay
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: so i knew you were gonna have some good one-liners too so so i i'm gonna start with
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: the last thing that you said and then probably work my way back
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: but first is what you just said it was more self-assurance rather
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: than lord assert assurant
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: and i think you pretty much just answered like sometimes i'll get the question
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: um what's the difference between self-worth and divide more
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: and that's pretty much it right there what you were saying
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: where it's just like it it's not about really coming from
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: within it's actually coming from the lord because that is constant whereas
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: that self-worth can change depending on how you view yourself
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: yeah because does god want us to love ourselves absolutely he wants us
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: to love ourselves so much but i think when i was younger i was really confused a lot
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: and i felt a lot of shame because you know there's some sayings like you know
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: if you don't love yourself who else is going to love you and the reality is is
- 19:00SPEAKER_02: that there are days where i i don't feel like i love myself a lot and then
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: i'm like well i don't love myself so nobody else is gonna love me and no like
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: if you don't love yourself god still loves you you know and i i think that that was
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: so powerful to me of then being able to work to loving myself right and
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: and we're still working on it but and it's great but i feel like divine love that is
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: the backup plan even when you don't have self-love and that's you're not barred
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: from divine love if you don't feel self-actualized or self-assured
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: or self-love you know yeah
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: okay so the other thing that from your story that i wanted to share was that you had
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: to sacrifice sacrifice being the sacrifice being the perfect missionary versus being
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: the lord's missionary and i feel that that is just a big key
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: to what you are saying um within your story within our lives is we have to let go of
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: that idea that we need to do everything exactly right so that
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: the lord can actually do his great work within us yeah
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: yeah and i think that that is what he's you know we've talked about eve right
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: that is what he was asking adam and eve to do and and everybody in the scriptures
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: and all of us right are you willing to give up
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: this idea of being perfect at first so that you can learn you know
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: the things you need to learn to be truly perfect later and perfect in the word
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: of like complete you know but it can't like quick perfection is going to be hollow
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: and so we have to give up this idea of like only limiting ourselves
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: to like temporary perfection because that will be a barrier
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: to true eternal perfection later on because we have to learn things along the way
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: to get to that end point yeah
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: i love that you understand that like where you're at
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: in this life like it it takes us a long time to understand and and
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: so just there's such power in in knowing that and understanding
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: that because it really is through it's through christ that we become perfect and
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: that only happens as we are humble enough to accept
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: that oh yeah i am making mistakes or life this perfect vision
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: of what i think is is what needs to happen i need to let go
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: because otherwise i can't let christ in
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: yeah i i i really like that
- 21:20SPEAKER_02: and i guess somebody should have said this earlier they should have said like i
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: don't know let god prevail or something like if only somebody had had told me
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: that earlier
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: you know it's it's and it's so hard right because like i can talk about it and seem
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: so wise now but in the moment you know it's trying to remember it in the moment
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: that i think is is the hardest part of it you know yet at
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: the same time like right now annie just take a moment and recognize
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: that you learned it when you needed to learn it right so all part of
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: the plan like heavenly father knows when you're going to be ready
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: to hear what you need to hear and he yes maybe you did hear it
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: earlier but you weren't ready to actually receive yeah i i love that and it
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: and it does go again with this idea that god knows us you know and
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: so he knows he's willing to give it give it to us early but he also wants to give it
- 22:12SPEAKER_02: to us when it will be most helpful for us as well like i've been thinking
- 22:17SPEAKER_02: about this experience i just had so right now i
- 22:21SPEAKER_02: run a law fellowship at byu for international religious freedom and human rights
- 22:25SPEAKER_02: because why not and it was definitely not something that i sought out but
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: a divine opportunity from the lord and as i've been trying
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: to figure this out i i work with a lot of fellows
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: that i work with and they are amazing and they're like i'm ready to do some work
- 22:39SPEAKER_02: but there was a time where i was trying to get everything organized and in
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: the moment like i could have told them some of the things i was working on
- 22:46SPEAKER_02: but it wouldn't have helped them to do anything because it was you know coordinating
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: with people that only i could coordinate with or you know setting some things up
- 22:55SPEAKER_02: that only that only
- 22:57SPEAKER_02: i could do like through email and so it was kind of hard to find that balance of
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: of keeping them in the loop and knowing i was working on things
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: but also like saying like oh like you think that talking
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: with me like people would start talking with me and they'd get kind of disappointed
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: because they would realize i didn't know what was going on and it was kind
- 23:12SPEAKER_02: of this idea of like you think that like just
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: if i told you everything i knew it would solve all of your problems of like wanting
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: to do something but it actually like just because of the timing because of
- 23:23SPEAKER_02: the circumstance it's
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: was going to be more helpful for them to just wait a couple
- 23:27SPEAKER_02: a couple more weeks just wait a little bit longer and
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: then i could give you complete information that would then be more helpful to you
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: and that might be a very drawn-out metaphor but i think the lord taught me through
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: that hey annie because i was ranting to him in the car about about it i was like
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: they just i just have a disappointment to them and
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: but they have they only do you know and he was like hey annie
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: because that's how he talks to me sometimes as a friend
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: and he goes hey annie have there been any moments in your life
- 23:53SPEAKER_02: where you think talking to me and just getting your answer
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: from me is gonna solve everything and gonna help you do everything you need to do
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: and then i was like yeah and he's like okay so what are we learning i say okay well
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: sometimes when i don't have an answer all the time or it's not hitting me
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: if i'm trying to work on one principle like self-worth or divine worth
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: it's just not coming sometimes it's just because it's not the right time
- 24:17SPEAKER_02: and there will be a time where it is most helpful for god to give us an answer
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: or put us in a specific situation and if it's not coming now it's not
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: because god's being a meany pants it's because he wants to give us give it to us at
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: the most helpful time and in the most helpful way so there's another tangent i'm
- 24:35SPEAKER_01: so sorry completely agree
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: i'm like so self-conscious no i i think that it's such it's it's a great example of
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: a well okay a lot see my mind's going everywhere i have so many things right
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: because your example shows exactly what we're talking about where it's like
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: the lord will reveal to you when you need it and
- 24:58SPEAKER_01: because sometimes we beat ourselves up
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: over i i should have listened way back then or i wish i knew that way back then
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: or you know and and we get caught up in that
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: when really we just weren't ready we just weren't ready and so that is
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: a great example and and it's also just a great example of of being open to listening
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: to the lord and being like yeah okay i can relate to these people because of it
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: which kind of goes back to the first part of this whole discussion
- 25:29SPEAKER_02: full circle
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: well like yeah like you just wonder like you know if we're you know
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: because god does see this whole picture right and so if we're looking at nephi right
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: in jerusalem they're killing it right they're pretty well off we think we think you
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: know
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: but if you're thinking about what nephi's options were
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: in jerusalem like best case scenario he's probably gonna be like well we're gonna be
- 25:54SPEAKER_02: rich and we're gonna you know maybe i'll be a high priest and everyone's kind
- 25:58SPEAKER_02: of wicked but like i can be righteous right great goals right
- 26:02SPEAKER_02: and maybe you can use my money to help other people that'd be awesome but
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: the lord saw nephi and he said he can be a king he can be a prophet
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: he can be somebody that writes an account that will be read by millions of people
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: for you know two thousand years later what an incredible vision right but
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: that didn't happen in first nephi chapter one you know nephi doesn't even pray
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: until first nephi chapter two he doesn't even follow the lord
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: until first nephi chapter three
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: And he goes through and it takes years of going into the wilderness to get to
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: the promised land.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: And like a lot of those experiences probably are the things that allowed him
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: To be that prophet, to be that king, to write that record.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: and the lord was willing the lord saw that in nephi he was
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: And it's not nephi's fault he's not ready for all those things
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: in first nephi chapter one no that's just how life works right that would be weird
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: if as a young man he had that wisdom right from the get-go some people do
- 26:58SPEAKER_02: but not a lot and so it's interesting because you can see
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: the lord opening nephi's life to his plan not the perfect jerusalem life but but
- 27:07SPEAKER_02: the lord's the lord's life for nephi and you can see all of the hard things all of
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: the heartache all of the murder attempts right that you know sleeping in sleeping in
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: a tent in the wilderness next to somebody that's tried to kill you
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: right being on a boat that you built you don't know how to build a boat you're in
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: the ocean you could drown at any time and your siblings are dancing in
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: a weird way you know like it's they're making merry and so it's just so interesting
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: because there's very real hard things that have to happen
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: not only for you to like for you to be ready
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: to accept those like amazing opportunities that the board sees you can have
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: but he also needs to get you ready to be able to accept those things you know
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: so i am really curious how you went from i mean i know part of it was your mission
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: and and this and that but you went from theater major
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: to law school international human rights like what can you tell
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: that story oh my goodness
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: see but i'm just gonna talk for a lot longer my goodness okay this is
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: a great question lots of us are wondering sometimes me so yeah so so
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: before my mission i was gonna be an actor or an actress i was gonna go
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: on my mission i was gonna graduate from byu in the acting program get an agent
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: and move to la be awesome last last tick on the box and i went
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: on my mission life-changing
- 28:26SPEAKER_02: built this relationship with the lord amazing amazing experiences to where at
- 28:32SPEAKER_02: the end the lord could ask me the question he couldn't ask me to form a mission
- 28:36SPEAKER_02: which is will you will you quit acting at least for right now and it took it took a
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: a lot of promptings and it took a lot of very clear direction from the lord
- 28:46SPEAKER_02: until there there did come another moment just at the end of my mission where it was
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: a question of do you want to keep this relationship that we that we've built or
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: if you follow your path you are gonna lose this relationship that we have
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: and it's and it's not because you know acting is evil i have lots of friends
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: that can do both and have and have both that relationship with god and
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: and can do all of the things but for me the lord also saw you know as much
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: as he saw my my potential in other ways he saw that this this could really hurt me
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: and so he asked me to to quit acting and
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: i did very hard so i came home and i said okay you told me what not to do
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: so you are gonna tell me what to do with my life and he said good try yeah no
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: and he did not give me that answer like we talked about for a really long time
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: and i came back and so
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: and that meant that a lot of my friends either were all in acting
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: and it made me really sad to hang out with them or they were all on their missions
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: and I felt really lonely so I just tried different things and I tried I plucked
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: a major
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: my mtc teacher was a biblical studies major so i started studying that
- 29:56SPEAKER_02: and did not feel like that was the right time it felt weird i loved it
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: but it didn't feel right so i i got some minors in hebrew instead i have a minor in
- 30:05SPEAKER_02: a minor in modern hebrew and then there was a semester i took every 200 class level
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: under the sun i took international politics and psychology and
- 30:17SPEAKER_02: then i realized psychology was science i took anthropology and i
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: like every 201 level class under the sun i will tell you this now i think i have
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: record for byu credits i graduated byu 209 credits which is insane and
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: that was because for a lot of it it was me just being like i gotta walk
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: graduated from byu with an advertising degree and my older sister who's amazing
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: and i feel slightly competitive with graduated from byu in advertising and
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: so there's two things i promised i would never do in life it was to go
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: to byu do advertising we already gave up on the first one when god told me to go
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: to byu so we were holding to that second one but i took the class and i sat in
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: the class and i felt the spirit say this is the class this is the major
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: and i said great this can help me be creative because in
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: the meantime i've been trying other things i started doing comedy and was on
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: a group called byu divine comedy it was
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: a sketch comedy group i started doing improv comedy
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: at this place called comedy sports and so i was like i get to be creative
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: and i started doing these classes and then i went on i got
- 31:43SPEAKER_02: to visit israel actually incredible trip wild trip that i shouldn't have been able
- 31:47SPEAKER_02: to go on but through lots of cool means i was able to
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: and i was sitting on mount what they thought was mount cyanide
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: and i was really stressed about being in the creative track of advertising
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: and god said nope you're not doing that and i said what and he said you need
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: to focus on strategy and i said okay and so i went back and i i was in
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: the strategy track
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: and through that i i learned a lot about communication and storytelling
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: and advertising and in this sounds so weird because
- 32:13SPEAKER_02: in some ways i'm like advertising's insane they're all just trying to sell us stuff
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: but if you really think about the divine principle
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: of advertising it's taking something you feel is important and learning how
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: to help other people see the importance in that and some people use it
- 32:25SPEAKER_02: to sell things but i got to use it to educate people i did a lot of
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: work with the lisa show on byu radio and all of
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: a sudden it wasn't like how do you sell
- 32:34SPEAKER_02: a product it was oh my gosh there's this cool interview
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: with this olympian how do i help people know that this can help them in their lives
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: and then all of a sudden i
- 32:45SPEAKER_02: so i was doing that i was very happy doing things like that
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: and i was doing social media and i thought that's what i was gonna do
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: with my life right we got it all figured out finally and i found
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: a social media account and it was called religious freedom for all and i looked
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: at it i was like oh this is pretty cool i like religious freedom like i study hebrew
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: i i like i love interfaith stuff but their social media is kind
- 33:05SPEAKER_02: of it could use some help and i've never done this to this day but i i messaged them
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: and in the time at the time i was living in washington dc and i said hey
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: do you need any help with your social media like i do this for my job
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: if you need any help let me know and they messaged back
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: and they're like we would love that and it's not on the account but it was
- 33:22SPEAKER_02: an account from byu and byu law school and it was working
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: with international religious freedom and i started working with them in
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: a social media aspect and i still do but then it started
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: to really become this is really important and i gotta meet a lot of people that
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: have divine worth throughout the world and because
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: of their circumstance they they they don't know that have that divine worth
- 33:47SPEAKER_02: in many aspects right there's a spiritual aspect but there's also like you know
- 33:51SPEAKER_02: because you have that divine worth you should be able to
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: choose what you believe right god's plan plan of salvation and that is part of
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: you being a human soul on this earth and so i really started falling in love with
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: this and meeting their stories again i'm a storyteller
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: and and so finally it kind of got to the point where i started getting more
- 34:08SPEAKER_02: entrenched in it and then i decided well i was praying
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: and god is a place that you can help
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: i we haven't done that last half like we're trying right now i'm applying
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: to law school it's going horribly i'm very mediocre but we're trying to follow
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: that path and that's kind of where we're at right now but right now i get to work
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: so i started out doing social media but now i like run this fellowship and i i get
- 34:31SPEAKER_02: to work with a lot of different human rights type things and religious freedom as
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: a human right in a lot of different spheres
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: so i told you this story is gonna be long it is really long take whatever metaphor
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: or principle that you can from that or cut the whole thing i don't you
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: and andy what i love about this entire conversation is it's like trust in
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: the lord well part
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: of it was see your worth see others is worth see your own worth trust the lord and
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: then it's kind of i think
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: the lord does this to us is he really stresses trust me trust me trust me and
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: then what happens is once we're like trusting him he says okay now you figure out
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: the next step and he doesn't leave us like he's still there and you'll
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: still receive guidance but at the same time he starts to get us
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: to trust ourselves too and then it starts to be kind of a back and forth
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: but it's like it's kind of this process that he he takes us through and and
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: that story just shows that whole process
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: yeah and it's very messy like i don't know i think because i think if you met me
- 35:36SPEAKER_02: and got the social media version of me it'd be like wow she's
- 35:40SPEAKER_02: a comedian she is going to law school she has never you know she she has
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: a testimony she has never struggled with anything in her life right
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: and like even just the law school thing it's like no like i
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: cry almost daily because i've applied to law schools and i haven't heard back
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: and you know like you just don't see the others you know
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: or like oh yeah like she she has two minors in hebrew wow i don't know if people say
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: that i say that that's my fantasy is that people are like wow but
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: then you don't see me going to all these hebrew classes and me being objectively
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: the worst person in all of these classes and needing like personalized tutoring
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: so i don't fit
- 36:20SPEAKER_02: you know and so i think it's so easy to just see the see the cool results and
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: and not see the struggle and i think that that is like that idea of trust is
- 36:28SPEAKER_02: so important because like this is sorry this is a this is a separate thought
- 36:32SPEAKER_02: so you can put a period on that thought
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: you taught me something about trust and i just wanted to say it in case i need to
- 36:39SPEAKER_02: but you know we talked about self-love and divine love
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: and i think what god taught me through this conversation is he all he just
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: as he wants us to love ourselves he wants us to trust ourselves and build self-trust
- 36:50SPEAKER_02: but in the moments where it's really hard
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: to trust ourselves there is always divine trust and he is always going to trust us
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: and and he is going to we have him to trust even
- 37:00SPEAKER_02: when we don't have we can't trust ourselves so like i really love this idea
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: of like self-love divine love self-trust divine trust you know such good point oh
- 37:09SPEAKER_01: that's so good okay annie with
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: that what what is your favorite divine worth scripture oh there's so many
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: you know i think it has changed in this conversation as of right now i i reserve
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: the right to change my favorite scripture at any point in time and i do so on like
- 37:25SPEAKER_02: a 30 minute basis and i think there's so many good ones right like i love romans 8
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: who can separate us from the love of god but the one that i'm thinking and
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: that this conversation is really calling to me hebrews chapter 12 verse 2
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: and this is the english standard version for clarity because my brain
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: but you can also look it up in the kjv if you want
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: but this is just what it says looking to jesus wait no i do want the kjv
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: because it has good words sorry right as always but that to make it look like i know
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: or you can keep it in
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: to show annie sometimes doesn't this is what it is king james does matter in this
- 37:58SPEAKER_02: in this verse because of the wording looking unto jesus the author and finisher
- 38:04SPEAKER_02: of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising
- 38:08SPEAKER_02: the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of god
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: and i think just this the term author and finisher of our faith really i think
- 38:17SPEAKER_02: was apparent to me upon reflection as we're talking today. We're talking about stories,
- 38:24SPEAKER_02: how everyone has a story and through Jesus Christ and through God and their ability to see us
- 38:29SPEAKER_02: and their power they love us enough to be the author of our stories and the finisher
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: of our stores because in the beginning we might set out and think it has one ending like me but
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: they have the power to write the perfect ending
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: for our stories and to get us to that perfect ending albeit through a lot of mess
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: and and i think that that principle of them being the author and finisher
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: of her faith because they see our divine worth every good story has a lot
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: of mess too right it's not easy but it's part of the story or else it wouldn't be
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: a story right yeah okay what is one small and simple thing
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: that those listening can do to embrace their divine worth okay
- 39:13SPEAKER_02: Okay, I'm sure you get lots of great ideas.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: And so I would say, if you're listening to this podcast frequently, do those ones a lot.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: But if I was thinking about maybe some things that I feel strongly about
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: that I feel have changed my relationship with God in a way that's positive.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: and the first is just like talking to god through prayer but i think my relationship
- 39:36SPEAKER_02: with god changed when the way i talked to him changed and when i stopped talking
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: to him like this otherworldly being just watching
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: and maybe sometimes listening like i talked to him like that for a really long time
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: of like i don't know like you know like and i don't want to be disrespectful
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: because he is all powerful and all-knowing
- 39:54SPEAKER_02: but he also is our father and he is our friend and so or he is my friend if you want
- 39:59SPEAKER_02: to be friends with him i'm sure he would love to and so i i take time
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: and i have time for very respectful prayer but i also have time for friend prayer
- 40:06SPEAKER_02: and for father prayer where i try to talk to him like i would a friend or a father
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: and because i think a lot of times i want to impress god so much because i love him
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: so much that i hold back the ugly parts of myself because i want to impress him and
- 40:20SPEAKER_02: that is not helpful in a relationship with somebody
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: and so i've learned to communicate that so for i'll give you
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: an example i mean you heard i talked a little bit about praying a little bit earlier
- 40:33SPEAKER_02: in the car so i think finding a place where you can do this is is important but
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: for me it's the car or the temple parking lot at 12 a.m no sooner
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: and saying things like
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: hey i don't want to whine because this is a whiny thought
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: and i desperately don't want to murmur because i know that's bad but i also want
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: to be really honest with how i feel about this blah blah blah
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: or saying things like hey i know that you answered this question a couple weeks ago
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: and i know you put this person in my life and i know you did this and this and this
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: and so i know that this shouldn't be a hard thing for me anymore
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: but oh my gosh i still i still feel so scared about law school right
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: and i know you've i know you've confirmed to me every time i pray about it that it's
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: the right thing it's still really hard for me so i think just even communicating
- 41:20SPEAKER_02: that helps me talk to god as a friend and it helps me share my my thoughts
- 41:24SPEAKER_02: that i don't want to share with him like i tell him i don't want to tell you this
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: because it's going to make me sound bad and i want you to like me
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: you know and and and saying things like that has really changed the way i pray
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: so that's a silly thing you don't like it don't do it but if you do you should and
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: and then i i guess i'll just throw this out here too because
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: the most recent really good experience i had learning about my divine worth was
- 41:45SPEAKER_02: a month ago or a couple months ago because i had read a random talk
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: by gary e stevenson and it's a really good talk
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: and he gives this very interesting invitation at the end that kind of doesn't have
- 41:57SPEAKER_02: to do a ton with his talk and i thought it was so weird at the time and and this is
- 42:02SPEAKER_02: and so he talks all about the spirit and all about spiritual gifts and
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: then this is what his invitation is i'm
- 42:07SPEAKER_02: so sorry elder stevenson i think this is weird and random
- 42:10SPEAKER_02: He says, I close with an invitation. Many of you start your day by standing in front
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: of a mirror. Tomorrow? This week? This year? Always. Pause as you look at yourself
- 42:18SPEAKER_02: in the mirror. Think to yourself or say aloud if you like
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Wow! Look at me. I am awesome. I'm a child of God
- 42:25SPEAKER_02: He knows me. He loves me
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: I'm gifted. Gifted with the Holy Ghost is my constant companion
- 42:32SPEAKER_02: i am not an affirmation person and in fact like
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: on my mission all my mission companions were like you should do affirmations
- 42:38SPEAKER_02: and i was like no and so like not my comfort zone but and this talk was given in
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: october 2023 and i did it last november so it took two years for me to like get
- 42:48SPEAKER_02: over myself and do this invitation that i was always standing out to me
- 42:53SPEAKER_02: and i did it i printed out that blurb i i didn't have it memorized
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: and i still don't i don't think but i printed it out i put it on my mirror
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: and i made myself do it for a couple of weeks and i guess he's an inspired servant
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: of the lord or something like that because
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: it was so weird and i can't even explain why it changed the way i saw myself as
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: a daughter of god as a child of god it made me feel like i was awesome that i had
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: the holy ghost as my constant companion and i need i needed that
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: because it was right when i started my law school applications and it was right
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: when i got put in charge of this fellowship and i got asked to do a lot of things
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: that i was feeling really scared to do
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: and so again if you don't want to do that one not your cup of tea you don't have
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: to it's you know the really important things prayer scripture things like
- 43:37SPEAKER_02: that do them but if you need like a way to break your cycle of
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: of maybe self-distrust or self you're struggling with self-love or self-trust
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: or divine love or divine trust like that was one way that i like was able
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: to break some thought patterns of mine and connect to the lord and
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: and feel my divine worth a little bit more fully so i'll just throw
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: that one out there that's great
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: i love that and i thank you for sharing your personal experience with
- 44:02SPEAKER_01: that too that's something that we can all learn from
- 44:05SPEAKER_01: Annie this has been wonderful talking with you I just have one last question and
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: that is how can those listening connect with you that is
- 44:14SPEAKER_02: a good question I have I have an Instagram and it's it's Ogden underscore Annie
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: so Ogden like the city underscore Annie like the movies
- 44:22SPEAKER_02: and that's like my personal Instagram and then I am running a Instagram account
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: about religious freedom it's called religious freedom for all
- 44:32SPEAKER_02: you're welcome to write to to look at that and oh i don't want to say this
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: but i'm going to i actually the reason i did that challenge is because i wanted
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: to record my experience doing it and i'm in the i'm in the process of editing
- 44:44SPEAKER_02: a little video about it and so i am going
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: to post it on the youtube and i'm really scared to do so so if you don't want
- 44:52SPEAKER_02: to watch it you don't have to haha but if but i'm gonna say that
- 44:55SPEAKER_02: because i do feel like it has to you can it has to do a lot with divine worth
- 44:59SPEAKER_02: and maybe it helps somebody out there and so
- 45:02SPEAKER_02: that youtube channel is called hallelujah so it's h-a-l-l-e-i-e-a-h so
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: because it's like hallelujah but then like yeah
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: so you can look at those things or if you've listened to this podcast and never want
- 45:16SPEAKER_02: to see me again that's okay too i i understand so well thank you
- 45:21SPEAKER_01: so much it has been wonderful talking with you
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: and i really appreciate you sharing your story thanks for putting up
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: with me i i feel like i learned a lot from this conversation as well
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: so i'm really grateful
- 45:33SPEAKER_02: i probably got more out of it than you did so i'm really grateful for that and
- 45:36SPEAKER_02: for being able to be taught through through this
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: so this this was awesome really it it was a thought-provoking conversation
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: and just awesome and it's it reminds me of that scripture and doctrine covenants
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: where it says and this is total totally paraphrasing but it says that both
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: the learner and the teacher are edified when the spirit is present and so
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: that i feel that yeah well anything that that's like
- 45:59SPEAKER_02: through weird lord happenstance i've gotten to to do a couple of podcasts lately
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: and like it's one of those things where i'm like no like people like i'm 27
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: and people should not be taking advice from me and i i think i've learned that it's
- 46:13SPEAKER_02: a way to celebrate the experiences that god has somehow given me and it's a way
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: for me to remember them and not discount them and so i'm really grateful for
- 46:22SPEAKER_02: the opportunity and thank you for putting up with me and feel free to cut the sorry
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: awesome and and just to throw that out there for anyone who wants to she was on
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: the dense of my armor podcast which i've mentioned on this podcast and jenny
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: and leave have both been on it as well and so just check that out as well
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: because it's a really great conversation there too so great thank you thank you
- 46:46SPEAKER_02: so much thank you listeners you're awesome don't forget it self-love divine love
