Wilmington is set to honor George Lawrence Mabson, North Carolina’s first African American lawyer, with a historic marker dedication on August 15th. Born in 1845, Mabson served in the Union Army, graduated from Howard Law in 1871, and broke barriers by becoming a licensed attorney that same year. His legacy extends beyond law—he served in the state legislature and helped shape North Carolina’s constitution.
