Speaker 1: Chapter five, several adventures that happened to the author the
0:06
Speaker 1: execution of a criminal, The author shows his skill in navigation.
0:12
Speaker 1: I should have lived happily enough in that country if
0:15
Speaker 1: my littleness had not exposed me to several ridiculous and
0:18
Speaker 1: troublesome accidents, some of which I shall venture to relate.
0:23
Speaker 1: Glandalklitch often carried me into the gardens of the court
0:26
Speaker 1: in my smaller box, and would sometimes take me out
0:30
Speaker 1: of it and hold me in her hand, or set
0:32
Speaker 1: me down to walk. I remember, before the dwarf left
0:36
Speaker 1: the Queen, he followed us one day into those gardens,
0:40
Speaker 1: and my nurse having set me down, he and I
0:44
Speaker 1: being close together near some dwarf apple trees, I must
0:48
Speaker 1: needs show my wit by a silly illusion between him
0:51
Speaker 1: and the trees, which happened to hold in their language,
0:55
Speaker 1: as it does in hours. Whereupon the malicious rogue, watching
0:59
Speaker 1: his opportunity, when I was walking under one of them,
1:03
Speaker 1: shook it directly over my head, by which a dozen apples,
1:07
Speaker 1: each of them near as large as a bristol barrel,
1:09
Speaker 1: came tumbling about my ears. One of them hit me
1:13
Speaker 1: on the back as I chanced to stoop and knocked
1:16
Speaker 1: me down flat on my face. But I received no
1:20
Speaker 1: other hurt, and the dwarf was pardoned at my desire,
1:23
Speaker 1: because I had given the provocation. Another day, Glumdalklitch left
1:28
Speaker 1: me on a smooth grass plot to divert myself while
1:32
Speaker 1: she walked at some distance with her governess. In the meantime,
1:37
Speaker 1: there suddenly felt such a violent shower of hail that
1:40
Speaker 1: I was, immediately, by the force of it, struck to
1:42
Speaker 1: the ground. And when I was down, the hailstones gave
1:46
Speaker 1: me such cruel bangs all over the body as if
1:49
Speaker 1: I had been pelted with tennis balls. However, I made
1:53
Speaker 1: a shift to creep on all fours and shelter myself
1:57
Speaker 1: by lying flat on my face on the lee side
1:59
Speaker 1: of a border of lem and Thime, but so bruised
2:03
Speaker 1: from head to foot that I could not go abroad
2:05
Speaker 1: in ten days. Neither is this it all to be
2:09
Speaker 1: wondered at, because nature in that country observe in the
2:13
Speaker 1: same proportion through all her operations. A hailstone is near
2:17
Speaker 1: eighteen hundred times as large as one in Europe, which
2:20
Speaker 1: I can assert upon experience, having been so curious as
2:24
Speaker 1: to weigh and measure them. But a more dangerous accident
2:28
Speaker 1: happened to me in the same garden when my little nurse,
2:32
Speaker 1: believing she had put me in a secure place, which
2:35
Speaker 1: I often entreated her to do that I might enjoy
2:38
Speaker 1: my own thoughts, and having left my box at home
2:41
Speaker 1: to avoid the trouble of carrying it, went to another
2:44
Speaker 1: part of the garden with her governess and some ladies
2:47
Speaker 1: of her acquaintance. While she was absent and out of hearing,
2:52
Speaker 1: a small white spaniel that belonged to one of the
2:55
Speaker 1: chief gardeners, having got by accident into the garden, happened
2:59
Speaker 1: to reign engine near the place where I lay. The dog,
3:03
Speaker 1: following the scent, came directly up, and, taking me in
3:07
Speaker 1: his mouth, ran straight to his master wagon his tail,
3:10
Speaker 1: and set me gently on the ground. My good fortune,
3:13
Speaker 1: he had been so well taught that I was carried
3:16
Speaker 1: between his teeth without the least hurt or even tearing
3:19
Speaker 1: my clothes. But the poor gardener, who knew me well
3:23
Speaker 1: and had a great kindness for me, was in a
3:25
Speaker 1: terrible fright. He gently took me up in both hands
3:29
Speaker 1: and asked me how I did. But I was so
3:32
Speaker 1: amazed and out of breath that I could not speak
3:34
Speaker 1: a word. In a few minutes I came to myself,
3:37
Speaker 1: and he carried me safe to my little nurse, who
3:40
Speaker 1: by this time had returned to the place where she
3:43
Speaker 1: left me, and was in cruel agonies when I did
3:46
Speaker 1: not appear nor answer when she called. She severely reprimanded
3:51
Speaker 1: the gardener on account of his dog. But the thing
3:54
Speaker 1: was hushed up and never known at court, for the
3:57
Speaker 1: girl was afraid of the Queen's anger, and truly, as
4:01
Speaker 1: to myself, I thought it would not before my reputation
4:04
Speaker 1: that such a story should go about. This accident absolutely
4:09
Speaker 1: determined Glumdalklitch never to trust me abroad for the future.
4:12
Speaker 1: Out of her sight. I had been long afraid of
4:15
Speaker 1: this resolution, and therefore concealed from her some little unlucky
4:19
Speaker 1: adventures that happened in those times, well as left by myself.
4:25
Speaker 1: Once a kite halvering over the garden made a stoop
4:28
Speaker 1: at me, and if I had not resolutely drawn my
4:31
Speaker 1: hanger and run under a thick espella, he would have
4:35
Speaker 1: certainly carried me away in his talons. Another time, walking
4:39
Speaker 1: to the top of a fresh mole hill, I fell
4:42
Speaker 1: to my neck in the hole through which that animal
4:45
Speaker 1: had cast up the earth and coined some lie not worth.
4:49
Speaker 1: Remembering to excuse myself from spoiling my clothes, I likewise
4:55
Speaker 1: brought my right shin against the shell of a snail,
4:59
Speaker 1: which I happened to start umble over as I was
5:01
Speaker 1: walking alone and thinking on poor England. I cannot tell
5:06
Speaker 1: whether I was more pleased or mortified to observe in
5:09
Speaker 1: these solitary walks that the smaller birds did not appear
5:13
Speaker 1: to be at all afraid of me, but would hop
5:16
Speaker 1: about within a yard's distance, looking for worms and other food,
5:20
Speaker 1: with as much indifference and security as if no creature
5:23
Speaker 1: at all were near them. I remember a thrush had
5:28
Speaker 1: the confidence to snatch out of my hand with his
5:30
Speaker 1: bill a bit of cake that Glumdalklitch had just given
5:34
Speaker 1: me for my breakfast. When I attempted to catch any
5:38
Speaker 1: of these birds, they would boldly turn against me, endeavoring
5:43
Speaker 1: to peck my fingers, which I durst not venture within
5:46
Speaker 1: their reach, and then they would hop back, unconcerned, to
5:50
Speaker 1: hunt for worms or snails as they did before. But
5:54
Speaker 1: one day I took a thick cudgel and threw it
5:57
Speaker 1: with all my strength so luckily at a linen that
6:00
Speaker 1: I knocked him down, and, seizing him by the neck
6:04
Speaker 1: with both my hands, ran with him in triumph to
6:07
Speaker 1: my nurse. However, the bird, who had only been stunned,
6:12
Speaker 1: recovering himself, gave me so many boxes with his wings
6:16
Speaker 1: on both sides of my head and body. Though I
6:19
Speaker 1: held him at arm's length and was out of reach
6:21
Speaker 1: of his claws, that I was twenty times thinking to
6:25
Speaker 1: let him go. But I was soon relieved by one
6:28
Speaker 1: of our servants, who wrung off the bird's neck, and
6:32
Speaker 1: I had him the next day for dinner by the
6:34
Speaker 1: Queen's command. This linnet, as near as I can remember,
6:39
Speaker 1: seemed to be somewhat larger than an English swan. The
6:44
Speaker 1: maids of Honor often invited Glumdalklitch to their apartments and
6:48
Speaker 1: desired she would bring me along with her on purpose
6:51
Speaker 1: to have the pleasure of seeing and touching me. They
6:55
Speaker 1: would often strip me naked from toe to toe and
6:57
Speaker 1: lay me at full length in their bosoms, wherewith I
7:01
Speaker 1: was much disgusted, because, to say the truth, a very
7:05
Speaker 1: offensive smell came from their skins, which I do not
7:10
Speaker 1: mention or intend to the disadvantage of those excellent ladies,
7:14
Speaker 1: for whom I have all manner of respect. But I
7:17
Speaker 1: conceive that my sense was more acute in proportion to
7:20
Speaker 1: my littleness, and that those illustrious persons were no more
7:25
Speaker 1: disagreeable to their lovers or to each other than people
7:28
Speaker 1: of the same quality are with us in England. And
7:33
Speaker 1: after all I found the natural smell was much more
7:36
Speaker 1: supportable than when they used perfumes, under which I immediately
7:41
Speaker 1: swooned away. I cannot forget that an intimate friend of
7:46
Speaker 1: mine in Lilliput took the freedom, in a warm day,
7:49
Speaker 1: when I had used a good deal of exercise, to
7:52
Speaker 1: complain of a strong smell about me, although I am
7:56
Speaker 1: as little faulty that way as most of my sex.
8:00
Speaker 1: But I suppose his faculty of smelling was as nice
8:03
Speaker 1: with regard to me as mine was to that of
8:06
Speaker 1: this people. Upon this point I cannot forbear doing justice
8:10
Speaker 1: to the Queen, my mistress, and glandal Clitch, my nurse,
8:14
Speaker 1: whose persons were as sweet as those of any lady
8:17
Speaker 1: in England, that which gave me most uneasiness among these
8:21
Speaker 1: maids of honor, when my nurse carried me to visit
8:24
Speaker 1: them was to see them use me without any manner
8:27
Speaker 1: of ceremony, like a creature who had no sort of consequence.
8:32
Speaker 1: For they would strip themselves to the skin and put
8:35
Speaker 1: on their smocks in my presence, while I was placed
8:37
Speaker 1: on their toilet directly before their naked bodies, which I
8:42
Speaker 1: am sure to me was very far from being a
8:44
Speaker 1: tempting sight, or from giving me any other emotions than
8:48
Speaker 1: those of horror and disgust. Their skins appeared so coarse
8:53
Speaker 1: and uneven, so variously colored when I saw them near,
8:57
Speaker 1: with a mole here and there, as broad as a trencher,
9:00
Speaker 1: and hairs hanging from it thicker than pack threads, to
9:04
Speaker 1: say nothing farther concerning the rest of their persons. Neither
9:09
Speaker 1: did they at all scruple when hours by to discharge
9:12
Speaker 1: what they had drunk, to the quantity of at least
9:13
Speaker 1: two hogsheads in a vessel that held above three tons.
9:19
Speaker 1: The handsomest among these maids of honor a pleasant frolicsome
9:23
Speaker 1: girl of sixteen, would sometimes set me astride one of
9:26
Speaker 1: her nipples, with many other tricks. Wherein the reader will
9:30
Speaker 1: excuse me for not being over particular, But I was
9:34
Speaker 1: so much displeased that I entreated Lumdaluklitch to contrive some
9:38
Speaker 1: excuse for not seeing that young lady anymore. One day,
9:43
Speaker 1: a young gentleman who was nephew to my nurse's governess
9:47
Speaker 1: came and pressed them both to see an execution. It
9:51
Speaker 1: was of a man who had murdered one of that
9:53
Speaker 1: gentleman's intimate acquaintance. Clumdalklitch was prevailed on to be one
9:58
Speaker 1: of the company, very much against her inclination, for she
10:02
Speaker 1: was naturally tender hearted. And as for myself, although I
10:07
Speaker 1: abhorred such kind of spectacles, yet my curiosity tempted me
10:11
Speaker 1: to see something that I thought must be extraordinary. The
10:16
Speaker 1: malefactor was fixed in a chair upon a scaffield erected
10:19
Speaker 1: for that purpose, and his head was cut off at
10:23
Speaker 1: one blow with the sword of about forty feet long.
10:27
Speaker 1: The veins and archeries spouted up with such a prodigious
10:30
Speaker 1: quantity of blood, and so high in the air that
10:34
Speaker 1: the great Jetdieu at Versailles was not equal to it
10:38
Speaker 1: for the time it lasted. And the head, when it
10:42
Speaker 1: fell on the scaffield floor, gave such a bounce as
10:45
Speaker 1: made me start. Although I was at least half an
10:48
Speaker 1: English mile distant. The Queen, who often used to hear
10:52
Speaker 1: me talk of my sea voyages and took all occasions
10:56
Speaker 1: to divert me when I was melancholy, asked me whether
10:59
Speaker 1: I understood how to handle a sail or an oar,
11:02
Speaker 1: and whether a little exercise or rowing might not be
11:05
Speaker 1: convenient for my health. I answered that I understood both
11:10
Speaker 1: very well, for although my proper employment had been to
11:14
Speaker 1: be a surgeon or a doctor to the ship, yet
11:17
Speaker 1: often upon a pinch, I was forced to work like
11:20
Speaker 1: a common mariner. But I could not see how this
11:23
Speaker 1: could be done in their country, where the smallest werry
11:26
Speaker 1: was equal to a first rate man of war among us,
11:30
Speaker 1: and such a boat as I could manage would never
11:32
Speaker 1: live in any of their rivers. Her Majesty said, if
11:37
Speaker 1: I would contrive a boat, her own joiner should make it,
11:41
Speaker 1: and she would provide a place for me to sail in.
11:44
Speaker 1: The fellow was an ingenious workman, and by my instructions,
11:47
Speaker 1: in ten days finished a pleasure boat, with all its tackling,
11:52
Speaker 1: able conveniently to hold eight Europeans. When it was finished,
11:57
Speaker 1: the Queen was so delighted that she ran with it
11:59
Speaker 1: in her lapse to the King, who ordered it to
12:02
Speaker 1: be put into a cystin full of water with me
12:04
Speaker 1: in it by way of a trial, or I could
12:08
Speaker 1: not manage my two skulls or little laws for want
12:11
Speaker 1: of room. But the Queen had before contrived another project.
12:16
Speaker 1: She ordered the joiner to make a wooden trough of
12:19
Speaker 1: three hundred feet long, fifty broad and eight deep, which,
12:24
Speaker 1: being well pitched to prevent leaking, was placed on the
12:28
Speaker 1: floor along the wall in the outer room of the palace.
12:31
Speaker 1: It had a cork near the bottom to let out
12:34
Speaker 1: the water when it began to grow stale, and two
12:37
Speaker 1: servants could easily fill it in half an hour. Here
12:41
Speaker 1: I often used to row for my own diversion, as
12:43
Speaker 1: well as that of the Queen and her ladies, who
12:46
Speaker 1: thought themselves well entertained with my skill and agility. Sometimes
12:52
Speaker 1: I would put up my sail, and then my business
12:54
Speaker 1: was only to steer, while the ladies gave me a
12:57
Speaker 1: girl with their fans, and when they were weary, some
13:00
Speaker 1: of their pages would blow my cell forward with their breath,
13:04
Speaker 1: while I showed my art by steering starboard or larboard
13:07
Speaker 1: as I pleased. When I had done Glumdalklitch always carried
13:11
Speaker 1: back my boat into a closet and hung it on
13:14
Speaker 1: a nail to dry. In this exercise I once met
13:18
Speaker 1: an accident we should have liked to have cost me
13:21
Speaker 1: my life. For one of the pages. Having put my
13:25
Speaker 1: boat into the trough, the governess who attended glumdal Glitch
13:29
Speaker 1: very officiously lifted me up to place me in the boat.
13:34
Speaker 1: But I happened to slip through her fingers, and should
13:37
Speaker 1: have infallibly have fallen down forty feet upon the floor,
13:41
Speaker 1: if by the luckiest chance in the world, I had
13:44
Speaker 1: not been stopped by a corking pin that stopped in
13:47
Speaker 1: the good woman's stomacher, the head of the pin passing
13:51
Speaker 1: between my shirt and the waistband of my breeches, and
13:55
Speaker 1: thus I was held by the middle in the air
13:57
Speaker 1: till Glumdalklitch ran to my relief. Another time, one of
14:02
Speaker 1: the servants, whose office it was to fill my trowel
14:05
Speaker 1: every third day with fresh water, was so careless as
14:08
Speaker 1: to let a huge frog, not perceiving it, slip out
14:12
Speaker 1: of his pail. The frog lay concealed till I was
14:16
Speaker 1: put into my boat, and then, sensing a resting place,
14:20
Speaker 1: climbed up and made it lean so much on one
14:23
Speaker 1: side that I was forced to balance it with all
14:25
Speaker 1: my weight on the other to prevent overturning. When the
14:30
Speaker 1: frog was got in, it hopped at once half the
14:33
Speaker 1: length of my boat, and then over my head backward
14:37
Speaker 1: and forward, dubbing my face and clothed with its odious slime.
14:43
Speaker 1: The lardness of its features made it appear the most
14:46
Speaker 1: deformed animal that can be conceived. However, I desired Lumdalklitch
14:51
Speaker 1: to let me deal with it alone. I banged it
14:55
Speaker 1: a good while with one of my skulls, and at
14:57
Speaker 1: last forced it to leap out of the boat. But
15:01
Speaker 1: the greatest danger I ever underwent in that kingdom was
15:04
Speaker 1: from a monkey who belonged to one of the clerks
15:07
Speaker 1: of the kitchen. Plum Duglitch had locked me up in
15:10
Speaker 1: her closet while she went somewhere upon business or a visit.
15:15
Speaker 1: The weather being very warm, the closet window was left open,
15:19
Speaker 1: as well as the windows and the door of my
15:20
Speaker 1: bigger box, and which I usually lived because of its
15:23
Speaker 1: largeness and conveniency. As I sat quietly meditating at my table,
15:29
Speaker 1: I heard something bounce in ato the closet window and
15:32
Speaker 1: skip about from one side to the other whereat. Although
15:37
Speaker 1: I was very much alarmed, yet I ventured to look out,
15:41
Speaker 1: but not stirring from my seat. And then I saw
15:45
Speaker 1: this frolicsome animal, frisking and leaping up and down, till
15:49
Speaker 1: at last he came to my box, which he seemed
15:51
Speaker 1: to view with great pleasure and curiosity, peeping in at
15:55
Speaker 1: the door and every window. I reach to the farther
16:00
Speaker 1: corner of my room or box, but the monkey looking
16:05
Speaker 1: in at every side put me in such a fright
16:08
Speaker 1: that I wanted presence of mind to conceal myself under
16:10
Speaker 1: the bed, as I might easily have done. After some
16:16
Speaker 1: time spent in peeping, grinning, and chattering, he at last
16:20
Speaker 1: despied me, and reaching one of his paws inner to
16:23
Speaker 1: the door, as a cat does when she plays with
16:25
Speaker 1: a mouse. Although I often shifted place to avoid him,
16:29
Speaker 1: he at length seized the lappet of my coat, which,
16:33
Speaker 1: being made of that country silk, was very thick and strong,
16:36
Speaker 1: and dragged me out. He took me in his right
16:40
Speaker 1: forefoot and held me as a nurse as a child.
16:42
Speaker 1: She is going to suckle, just as I have seen
16:45
Speaker 1: the same sort of creature do with a kitten in Europe.
16:49
Speaker 1: And when I offered to struggle, he squeezed me so
16:51
Speaker 1: hard that I thought it more prudent to submit. I
16:56
Speaker 1: have good reason to believe that he took me for
16:58
Speaker 1: a young of one of his own species, but is
17:01
Speaker 1: often stroking my face very gently with his other paw.
17:05
Speaker 1: In these diversions. He was interrupted by a noise at
17:08
Speaker 1: the closet door, as if somebody was opening it, whereupon
17:12
Speaker 1: he suddenly leaped up to the window at which he
17:14
Speaker 1: had come in, and thence upon the leads the gutter,
17:18
Speaker 1: walking upon three legs, and told me in the fourth
17:21
Speaker 1: till he climbed up to a roof. That was next
17:23
Speaker 1: two hours. I heard Glanmdalklitch give a shriek at the
17:27
Speaker 1: moment he was carrying me out. The poor girl was
17:31
Speaker 1: almost distracted. That quarter of the palace was all in
17:34
Speaker 1: an uproar. The servants ran for ladders. The monkey was
17:38
Speaker 1: seen by hundreds in the court sitting upon the ridge
17:41
Speaker 1: of a building, holding me like a baby in one
17:43
Speaker 1: of his forepaws, and feeding me with the other by
17:46
Speaker 1: cramming into my mouth some victuals He had squeezed out
17:49
Speaker 1: of the bag on one side of his chaps, and
17:52
Speaker 1: patter me when I would not eat whereat. Many of
17:56
Speaker 1: the rabble below could not forbear laughing, neither do I.
18:00
Speaker 1: I think they justly ought to be blamed for without question,
18:03
Speaker 1: the sight was ridiculous enough to everybody but myself. Some
18:07
Speaker 1: of the people threw up stones, hoping to drive the
18:10
Speaker 1: monkey down, but this was strictly forbidden, or else very
18:14
Speaker 1: probably my brains had been dashed out. The ladders were
18:19
Speaker 1: now applied and mounted by several men, which the monkey, observing,
18:23
Speaker 1: and finding himself almost encompassed, not being able to make
18:27
Speaker 1: enough speed with his three legs, let me drop on
18:29
Speaker 1: a ridge tile and made his escape. Here. I sat
18:34
Speaker 1: for some time five hundred yards from the ground, expecting
18:38
Speaker 1: every moment to be blown down by the wind, or
18:41
Speaker 1: to fall by my own giddiness and come tumbling over
18:43
Speaker 1: and over from the ridge to the eaves. But an
18:47
Speaker 1: honest lad, one of my nurse's footmen, climbed up, and,
18:51
Speaker 1: putting me into his breech his pocket, brought me down safe.
18:56
Speaker 1: I was almost choked with the filthy stuff the monkey
18:58
Speaker 1: had crammed down my throat, but my dear little nurse
19:02
Speaker 1: picked it out of my mouth with a small needle,
19:05
Speaker 1: and then I fell a vomiting, which gave me great relief.
19:09
Speaker 1: Yet I was so weak and bruised in the sides
19:11
Speaker 1: with the squeezes given by this odious animal, that I
19:15
Speaker 1: was forced to keep my bed a fortnight. The King,
19:19
Speaker 1: Queen and all the court sent every day to inquire
19:22
Speaker 1: after my health, and her Majesty made me several visits.
19:26
Speaker 1: During my sickness, the monkey was killed, and an ordin
19:29
Speaker 1: maid that no such animal should be kept about the palace.
19:34
Speaker 1: When I attended the King after my recovery to return
19:37
Speaker 1: him thanks for his favors, he was pleased to rally
19:40
Speaker 1: me a good deal upon this adventure. He asked me
19:45
Speaker 1: what my thoughts and speculations were while I lay in
19:47
Speaker 1: the monkey's pow, how I liked the victuals he gave
19:50
Speaker 1: me his manner of feeding, and whether the fresh air
19:54
Speaker 1: on the roof had sharpened my stomach. He desired to
19:57
Speaker 1: know what I would have done upon such an occasion
20:00
Speaker 1: in my own country. I told his Majesty that in
20:05
Speaker 1: Europe we had no monkeys, except such as were brought
20:08
Speaker 1: for curiosity from other places. And so small that I
20:12
Speaker 1: could deal with a dozen of them together if they
20:14
Speaker 1: presumed to attack me. And as of that monstrous animal
20:18
Speaker 1: with whom I am so lately engaged, it was indeed
20:21
Speaker 1: as large as an elephant. If my fears had suffered
20:25
Speaker 1: me to think so far as to make use of
20:26
Speaker 1: my hanger, looking fiercely and clapping my hand on the
20:30
Speaker 1: hilt as I spoke, when he poked his pour into
20:33
Speaker 1: my chamber, perhaps I should have given him such a
20:36
Speaker 1: wound as would have made him glad to withdraw it
20:39
Speaker 1: with more haste than he put it. In this I
20:41
Speaker 1: delivered in a firm tone, like a person who was jealous,
20:45
Speaker 1: lest his courage should be called in question. However, my
20:49
Speaker 1: speech produced nothing else beside a loud laughter, which all
20:53
Speaker 1: the respect due to his majesty from those about him
20:55
Speaker 1: could not make them contain. Has made me refined how
21:00
Speaker 1: vain an attempt it is for a man to endeavor
21:03
Speaker 1: to himself honor among those who were out of all
21:06
Speaker 1: degree of equality or comparison with him. And yet I
21:11
Speaker 1: have seen the moral of my behavior very frequent in
21:13
Speaker 1: England since my return. Were a little contemptible Violette, without
21:18
Speaker 1: the least title to birth person wit or common sense,
21:22
Speaker 1: shall presume to look with importance and put himself upon
21:25
Speaker 1: a foot with the greatest persons of the kingdom. I
21:29
Speaker 1: was every day furnishing the court with some ridiculous story,
21:34
Speaker 1: and glamdal Clitch, although she loved me to excess, yet
21:38
Speaker 1: was ard enough to inform the Queen whenever I committed
21:40
Speaker 1: any folly that she thought would be diverting to her majesty.
21:45
Speaker 1: The girl who had been out of order was carried
21:48
Speaker 1: by a governess to take the air about an hour's
21:50
Speaker 1: distance or thirty miles from town. They alighted out of
21:55
Speaker 1: the coach near a small footpath in the field, and
21:59
Speaker 1: glumdal Clitch, setting down my traveling box, I went out
22:02
Speaker 1: of it to walk. There was a cow dung in
22:05
Speaker 1: the path, and I must need try my activity by
22:08
Speaker 1: attempting to leap over it. I took a run, but
22:13
Speaker 1: unfortunately jumped short and found myself just in the middle
22:16
Speaker 1: up to my knees. I waded through with some difficulty,
22:21
Speaker 1: and one of the footmen wiped me as clean as
22:23
Speaker 1: he could with his handkerchief, for I was filthy, beermurd
22:28
Speaker 1: and my nurse confined me to my box till we
22:31
Speaker 1: returned home, where the Queen was soon informed of what
22:34
Speaker 1: had passed, and the footman spread it about the court,
22:38
Speaker 1: so that all the mirth for some days was at
22:41
Speaker 1: my expense. And of Part two, Chapter five,
