- 0:00Speaker 1: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof,
- 0:03Speaker 1: then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be
- 0:07Speaker 1: as gods, knowing good and evil. Genesis 3.5 Dear God,
- 0:15Speaker 1: as I focus on today, I come against any lie
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the serpent, the devil, that would cause me to
- 0:22Speaker 1: believe that you are withholding something from me. Today I
- 0:27Speaker 1: will make the conscious decision to live in critical obedience
- 0:30Speaker 1: to you and to your word, Lord. I will not
- 0:34Speaker 1: allow pride to fracture my relationship with you. I will
- 0:38Speaker 1: not allow myself to go along with the lies that
- 0:42Speaker 1: I can be my own God and make decisions apart
- 0:45Speaker 1: from you. I decree and declare that even though I've
- 0:50Speaker 1: made mistakes, I will be quick to run to you, God,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and ask for forgiveness. Because I know, like how you
- 0:59Speaker 1: covered Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 2 and 3
- 1:02Speaker 1: in their lowest moment, you sent your Son, Jesus, to
- 1:06Speaker 1: cover me in my lowest moments. Glory to God, that
- 1:11Speaker 1: even when I feel the weight of my bad decisions,
- 1:15Speaker 1: your presence is always with me and will always provide
- 1:20Speaker 1: a way of comfort for my heart. In Jesus' name, amen.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Thank you for making prayer a priority in your day.

- 1:46Speaker 2: The tree that gives the knowledge of good and evil.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Before this story, we learned about the creation of Adam
- 1:54Speaker 2: and Eve. They lived together with God cared for the land,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and experienced great joy. Yet there was still a choice
- 2:02Speaker 2: God gave them. Now we will learn more about that choice,
- 2:06Speaker 2: the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge
- 2:09Speaker 2: of good and evil, and Adam and Eve's temptation to
- 2:13Speaker 2: choose against God, inspired by the book of Genesis.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:24Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. Today we are once again
- 2:28Speaker 3: in the Garden of Eden. God's work of creation has
- 2:31Speaker 3: culminated in the very first wedding. Adam and Eve are together,
- 2:35Speaker 3: naked and without shame before each other and before God.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I think because of the effects of sin, you and
- 2:41Speaker 3: I can't fully comprehend just how amazing life was in
- 2:45Speaker 3: the Garden for Adam and Eve. God walked with them.
- 2:49Speaker 3: And after all, it was His world that He made
- 2:53Speaker 3: to enjoy with His creation, Adam and Eve, and God
- 2:57Speaker 3: in the garden together. That was all about to change, though.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Today's story is about deception, bad choices, broken relationships. It
- 3:08Speaker 3: all starts when a fourth character enters the scene, a
- 3:11Speaker 3: serpent bent on ruining what God had made. God spoke
- 3:15Speaker 3: life and truth. The serpent spoke lies and death. His
- 3:19Speaker 3: target was none other than God's greatest creation, mankind. You
- 3:24Speaker 3: remember the choice Adam was given by God? Two trees.
- 3:28Speaker 3: One gave everything good, eternal life. The other, death. Adam
- 3:33Speaker 3: and Eve knew the rules. They were free to eat
- 3:36Speaker 3: of any tree except for that one. But the serpent,
- 3:40Speaker 3: the enemy, the devil, wedged himself into their minds, casting
- 3:44Speaker 3: doubt on God. Listen today to how the devil used
- 3:49Speaker 3: doubt and pride to tempt Adam and Eve to sin.
- 3:52Speaker 3: The choice was ultimately theirs, but he nudged them in
- 3:55Speaker 3: that direction. The results were nothing short of catastrophic, and
- 4:00Speaker 3: they reverberate through your own life to this very day.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Let's hear now from Genesis 3.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Adam and Eve lived naked with one another in the garden.
- 4:12Speaker 2: There was no need to feel ashamed of anything, since
- 4:15Speaker 2: their hearts had not been exposed to evil. They lived
- 4:19Speaker 2: together in spiritual harmony. emotional and physical bliss, and they
- 4:23Speaker 2: were close to God. Yet in the garden there was
- 4:27Speaker 2: a lurking evil in the form of a serpent. He
- 4:30Speaker 2: was crafty and a deceitful messenger determined to lure man
- 4:34Speaker 2: away from God's loving presence. While God spoke life into existence,
- 4:41Speaker 2: the serpent spoke death. His words directed towards Eve trying
- 4:46Speaker 2: to twist and deceive. He approached her saying, Did God
- 4:51Speaker 2: really say you could not eat from any tree in
- 4:54Speaker 2: the garden? Eve replied, We may eat of the fruit
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the trees in the garden. However, God instructed us
- 5:02Speaker 2: not to eat of the fruit of the tree of
- 5:04Speaker 2: good and evil, nor shall we touch it, lest we die.
- 5:09Speaker 2: The serpent, knowing that pride was the path away from God, said,
- 5:14Speaker 2: You will not surely die. God knows that when you
- 5:18Speaker 2: eat of it, your eyes will be opened. and you
- 5:20Speaker 2: will be like him, knowing all good and evil. This
- 5:25Speaker 2: enticed Eve, and has enticed humanity for all generations after her.
- 5:31Speaker 2: The possibility of being our own gods has directed the
- 5:34Speaker 2: path of evil for thousands of years. Eve, filled with
- 5:39Speaker 2: a deep curiosity and desire to be like God.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Herself, ate the fruit.
- 5:45Speaker 2: She did this with Adam beside her. She looked to Adam,
- 5:50Speaker 2: the man supposed to care for her heart, and gave
- 5:53Speaker 2: him the fruit also. Adam saw the fruit and saw
- 5:57Speaker 2: that it was good to eat, so he ate it too.
- 6:01Speaker 2: By eating the fruit, they sacrificed eternal intimacy with the
- 6:05Speaker 2: one who had breathed life into them. At this moment,
- 6:08Speaker 2: the relationship humanity had with God was fractured. Their eyes
- 6:13Speaker 2: were opened to the existence of evil. and their hearts
- 6:17Speaker 2: were exposed to sin and the shame it caused. No
- 6:20Speaker 2: longer cloaked with God's righteousness, Adam and Eve saw their
- 6:24Speaker 2: nakedness for the first time and were ashamed. Their physical
- 6:29Speaker 2: nakedness represented a deep spiritual nakedness. They desperately looked to
- 6:34Speaker 2: cover themselves up with leaves, although no clothes would ever
- 6:38Speaker 2: cover their true shame. God was walking through the quiet
- 6:42Speaker 2: of the garden. Adam and Eve heard him, and immediately
- 6:46Speaker 2: hid themselves. God, knowing full well what had happened, called out, Adam,
- 6:51Speaker 2: where are you? Adam replied, Here I am. I am
- 6:57Speaker 2: naked and afraid for you to see me. Adam's fear
- 7:01Speaker 2: of being seen naked revealed a much deeper separation between
- 7:05Speaker 2: him and God. God, with both intense anger and loving compassion, said,
- 7:11Speaker 2: Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten
- 7:15Speaker 2: of the tree I commanded you not to eat? Adam
- 7:18Speaker 2: fell deeper and deeper into his own shame and tragedy.
- 7:22Speaker 2: He pointed towards Eve, his companion, and the woman he
- 7:25Speaker 2: was meant to love and protect, and threw blame towards her.
- 7:30Speaker 2: The woman you gave me, she gave me the fruit.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Eve was falling into the same self-loathing and pride, and
- 7:38Speaker 2: now left alone by her husband, she pointed to the
- 7:41Speaker 2: serpent and said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
- 7:46Speaker 2: God looked to the serpent and said, Because of this
- 7:50Speaker 2: you are cursed to crawl and eat dust for the
- 7:53Speaker 2: rest of your days. One day I will make things right,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and a son of Eve will come and you will
- 8:00Speaker 2: bruise his heel, but he will crush your head. This
- 8:04Speaker 2: would be the foreshadowing of Jesus coming to put an
- 8:07Speaker 2: end to evil on the cross. Then God turned to
- 8:12Speaker 2: Adam and Eve, lamenting their choice to live as their
- 8:15Speaker 2: own gods. Their choice would not come without consequences. God
- 8:21Speaker 2: said to Eve, The blessing life will not come without struggle,
- 8:25Speaker 2: and childbirth will come with great pain. You will also
- 8:29Speaker 2: struggle continually with your husband and resent his leadership over you.
- 8:34Speaker 2: He then turned to Adam, Because you listened to your wife,
- 8:39Speaker 2: and ate from the tree I commanded you not to.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Cursed is the ground that you work on. You will
- 8:45Speaker 2: have to work every day for the rest of your
- 8:48Speaker 2: life to earn your food. By the sweat of your
- 8:51Speaker 2: face you shall eat bread until you die, for you
- 8:54Speaker 2: are dust, and to dust you shall return. Adam and
- 9:00Speaker 2: Eve's unity with God was fractured. Their knowledge of evil
- 9:04Speaker 2: caused their hearts and their bodies to feel pain. Yet
- 9:08Speaker 2: even in their disobedience, God's love for them remained, and
- 9:12Speaker 2: would always remain. He killed an animal and made clothes
- 9:16Speaker 2: for them. An innocent life was taken so they could
- 9:19Speaker 2: be warm and feel safe again. This would be an
- 9:22Speaker 2: image used for the rest of history. God cast Adam
- 9:27Speaker 2: and Eve from the Garden of Eden and put an
- 9:30Speaker 2: angel with a fiery sword to keep them away from
- 9:32Speaker 2: the Tree of Life forever. But God's story to love
- 9:37Speaker 2: people is not over. He would remain with them and
- 9:41Speaker 2: the story of redemption would begin to unfold before their eyes.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Doubt and pride. Those are the most powerful weapons the
- 9:53Speaker 3: crafty serpent used to fracture the perfect relationship God had
- 9:57Speaker 3: with his creation. In one fell swoop, he got humanity
- 10:01Speaker 3: to question God's Word and to desire to be equal
- 10:04Speaker 3: to God. Listen to what Genesis 3, 4, and 5 says.
- 10:10Speaker 3: The serpent said to the woman, You certainly will not die.
- 10:13Speaker 3: For God knows that on the day you eat from it,
- 10:16Speaker 3: your eyes will be opened and you will become like God.
- 10:20Speaker 3: knowing good and evil. He's saying, there's no way God
- 10:25Speaker 3: told you the truth, right? You won't die from eating
- 10:28Speaker 3: that fruit. There's the doubt. Satan still uses that tactic today.
- 10:34Speaker 3: How many problems are we facing because we don't take
- 10:36Speaker 3: God at his word? Too many to count. But then
- 10:41Speaker 3: he takes it another step further. He entices them with
- 10:44Speaker 3: a lie that he himself believed and that got him
- 10:48Speaker 3: removed from paradise, from heaven. You will be like God.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So now the serpent is tempting Adam and Eve, the creation,
- 10:57Speaker 3: to want equality with the creator. He knows this won't work.
- 11:01Speaker 3: He knows what will happen. And it does happen. But
- 11:04Speaker 3: there's one more thing I want you to notice here.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Remember that up until now, Adam and Eve have only
- 11:10Speaker 3: known good and very good. They already had that in
- 11:15Speaker 3: heart and in hand. So when the devil offers them
- 11:18Speaker 3: the opportunity to know good and evil, what he was
- 11:21Speaker 3: really offering is evil. That's what they don't know yet.
- 11:26Speaker 3: This is an important lesson for you and me. God
- 11:29Speaker 3: already gives us every good and perfect thing. Sin and
- 11:33Speaker 3: Satan tries to tell us that there is more good
- 11:36Speaker 3: to be had, but all we are really getting is evil.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Adam and Eve take the bait, eat the fruit, and
- 11:43Speaker 3: sever the relationship with God. Now they have knowledge of evil.
- 11:48Speaker 3: The freedom from shame, it is no more. They are
- 11:51Speaker 3: naked and ashamed and afraid and aware that they've really
- 11:55Speaker 3: messed up. So they hide from God, but it's all futile.
- 12:00Speaker 3: God knows what they've done and now it's time to
- 12:02Speaker 3: pay the price. He confronts them and we see two
- 12:05Speaker 3: relationships broken between God and mankind and within mankind itself.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Adam and Eve, two parts of one flesh, blame each other.
- 12:16Speaker 3: and blame God. They simply cannot remain in the garden,
- 12:20Speaker 3: eating from the tree of life. For you see, death,
- 12:23Speaker 3: though tragic, is ultimately a gift because it is how
- 12:27Speaker 3: they will once again be fully restored to fellowship with God.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Were they to stay in the garden, they would suffer
- 12:33Speaker 3: eternal separation. As the story ends, Adam and Eve are
- 12:37Speaker 3: going to face the harsh reality of life outside the garden,
- 12:42Speaker 3: of toil and trouble, of sweat and tears. This was
- 12:45Speaker 3: never God's heart for them, but He does not abandon
- 12:48Speaker 3: them in the consequences of their sin. Ever the loving Father,
- 12:53Speaker 3: God first clothes them. And this requires a blood sacrifice,
- 12:58Speaker 3: the death of an animal. It's only a temporary covering,
- 13:01Speaker 3: but it foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice Christ would one day make.
- 13:07Speaker 3: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you that despite our sin and
- 13:11Speaker 3: rejection of you, you have provided a sacrifice to cover us,
- 13:16Speaker 3: the blood of your son, Jesus. Thank you for this
- 13:19Speaker 3: passage today and how it shows us the tactics of
- 13:22Speaker 3: the enemy, those that he would use to cause us
- 13:25Speaker 3: to sin and to stumble. Help us always to trust
- 13:28Speaker 3: in you and your word. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank
- 13:33Speaker 3: you for listening to today's Bible in a Year podcast.
