- 0:31What is going on, everybody?
- 0:32Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:35My name is Scott Switzer.
- 0:36I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:37I am so honored and privileged to have with me this year's Legends 60 to 64 year old champion, Tony Tursky.
- 0:45Tony, what's going on, man?
- 0:47How much, man?
- 0:47Thanks for having me.
- 0:49It's an honor.
- 0:50My pleasure to have to be on the show, Scott.
- 0:53Yeah, it's been so fun having all the champions on.
- 0:56I'm trying to get every single one of them.
- 0:59There's a couple I'm having a hard time getting contact information with, but once I figure those out, we'll hopefully have all 14 champions on in the next couple weeks.
- 1:09Yeah, I've seen some of them on your Instagram.
- 1:12So yeah, I'm super excited about it.
- 1:15Yeah, so you've been around the sport for a long time, but I want to go even further back.
- 1:21You're a man who used to sell pizza.
- 1:25I did.
- 1:26I owned a little string of a small string line of pizza parlors out here called Stadium Pizza here in the Temecula Valley.
- 1:33But I've been I've been in pizza all my life.
- 1:36Last probably 45 years I've been doing pizza.
- 1:39But, yeah, I owned a small line of pizza parlors out here in Temecula since 1988, actually.
- 1:47So how does a kid go from being a pizza guy to a man who gets into fitness and owns a couple businesses in the fitness area?
- 1:58And that all stems from, was it healthy pizza?
- 2:04Well, I think our pizza was healthy, but like I would tell all my friends,
- 2:09My athletes in my gym eat pizza at moderation, right?
- 2:13But enjoy it.
- 2:15But I went from the pizza parlors.
- 2:18I kind of got out of pizza.
- 2:20About 10 years ago, I started selling off the pizza parlors and got into what I've always wanted to do and be a coach.
- 2:27I have a phys ed major out of Chico State.
- 2:31And I've always wanted to coach.
- 2:33That's all I've ever really loved doing.
- 2:35Even when I was in the pizza parlors running the restaurants, I felt like I was a coach.
- 2:41So I started selling them off about 10 years ago.
- 2:45And then since then, that's when I jumped into CrossFit.
- 2:48My wife introduced me to CrossFit about 11 years ago.
- 2:52I went out and got my L1 and grabbed one guy and told him I wanted to start coaching him for this thing called CrossFit.
- 3:01That one guy is still in my gym today after all those years.
- 3:05And now we have him and 215 other members in our gym.
- 3:11Wow.
- 3:11I was just listening to a podcast today where you were at 180.
- 3:14Yeah.
- 3:15And that was just a year ago.
- 3:17And now you're at 215.
- 3:19Yeah.
- 3:20Well, unfortunately, there's been a couple of gyms in the area that have closed down in our Temecula, Murrieta area.
- 3:27Yeah.
- 3:28and we had a bunch of them come on over here.
- 3:32And so we added about 30 to 40 of those members in the last actually month and a half, Scott.
- 3:39So that's great for business, right?
- 3:42New customers coming through the door, but what does that do to your infrastructure and how do you handle that?
- 3:49Well, like I tell everybody, it turned into a business instead of a hobby right away.
- 3:53So fortunately enough, I've been an entrepreneur in my own business, my own boss, if you will.
- 4:00for since 1988.
- 4:02And so it was pretty easy for me.
- 4:04Like I'm not able to train as much.
- 4:06I'm not able to do as much for myself as far as CrossFit competitions are concerned.
- 4:11Cause I literally have to run this gym, my box, like a business.
- 4:17So once those other people came in, I noticed I needed a few more bars.
- 4:22I needed some more boxes.
- 4:23I needed some more weights.
- 4:26I needed a baby changing table cause a lot of moms came over.
- 4:30And I put it all in and showed my members that I was here to do business and make this place a great place for them to be.
- 4:41So I read somewhere that your mom put you in sports as a kid and your favorite part about being in sports was being on a team.
- 4:52So does that translate to then now you're the boss of all these coaches.
- 4:56There's this huge opportunity coming through the door and that means there's opportunity for them and you.
- 5:01Yeah.
- 5:03Yeah, man.
- 5:04Um, I wrote that in my boy, you did your homework, Scott.
- 5:07I'm, I'm, I'm impressed.
- 5:09I love it.
- 5:10Um,
- 5:11I was a part of a team like when I played basketball.
- 5:14When I graduated from high school, I was like five foot three.
- 5:18I grew like six inches in college for some reason.
- 5:21But I was on the basketball team.
- 5:23There were 13 guys on the team.
- 5:25I was number 13.
- 5:26However, I was voted by the team as a team captain, actually, by the team.
- 5:31So I was pretty honored by that.
- 5:32But I was the little guy.
- 5:34I just wanted to be a part of the team because.
- 5:36Kind of felt like if I didn't have something to do, I was going to be in trouble.
- 5:41I came from a broken family.
- 5:43My mom did the best job she could.
- 5:46My dad wasn't around too much at all.
- 5:50And so I needed guidance.
- 5:52And the person that gave that to me was my high school basketball coach, a guy by the name of Tom Orlich, who was one of the top high school basketball coaches in the country.
- 6:01He still, to me, this day is a very good friend of mine after 50 plus years.
- 6:06I actually send him text messages on Father's Day and telling him, thank you very much.
- 6:12And on Christmas, he actually sent me a text this year on Christmas.
- 6:16He beat me to it.
- 6:17So I just wanted to be a part of the team.
- 6:21So did having a mentor like that in high school make you want to be a coach? 100%.
- 6:30I wanted to be just like Coach Orlitz, big time.
- 6:33I wanted to influence people.
- 6:37I wanted to lead people.
- 6:40I wanted people to believe what I was doing was the right thing.
- 6:46I couldn't have ever, like I say, I text Coach Orlitz every year and tell him thank you for the man that he kind of led me to be because I
- 6:58I mirror a lot of my coaching this day with Coach Orleach.
- 7:05So you own this affiliate.
- 7:08I went out on the website.
- 7:10You have lots of coaches with lots of credentials.
- 7:13You seem to have drank the Kool-Aid quick because you have a lot of different certifications yourself.
- 7:21Is it more fun coaching the athletes or coaching the coaches?
- 7:26Oh, the athletes.
- 7:29Oh, I love my athletes.
- 7:31It's more fun coaching the athletes.
- 7:33I love my coaches.
- 7:34My coaches all do a great job, but man, I love my athletes.
- 7:39I have a policy.
- 7:41When they walk in the door, I tell all my coaches, make sure you tell everybody hi.
- 7:46That's one of our first things you'll notice when you walk in our gym.
- 7:49Everybody says hi to you.
- 7:51And if they don't, then I let them know it.
- 7:54But I know every 215 of my members, I know their names.
- 8:00I touch base with them when they're in the gym.
- 8:02I walk around and ask questions.
- 8:05So coaching my athletes and watching what they do and their accomplishments, that's one thing.
- 8:12But getting to know them and their families and their lives, that's another thing.
- 8:16I always tell our coaches, you can coach.
- 8:19You do the best job that you possibly can out there.
- 8:21But this is a service-oriented business.
- 8:25You need to service these people as best as possible.
- 8:29Coach them, care for them, but make sure that this is your job is to be of service to these members.
- 8:37Because if you're not, we're going to lose them.
- 8:42My co-host Jamie is saying hi in the chat.
- 8:45She said, I'm here mid-zone too.
- 8:48So sorry to miss this one, Tony.
- 8:50Oh, hi, Jamie.
- 8:54So I'm going to go to a weird place.
- 8:58You come from a broken family, and then you have this gym that you make sure you know everybody's name.
- 9:07Does that bring together a family for you in a different way?
- 9:11Scott, this is my family.
- 9:16My wife and I work side by side.
- 9:22Never all our life.
- 9:23We just had our 36th wedding anniversary.
- 9:28My wife and I have worked together in the pizza parlors.
- 9:30She's right next door at our health and wellness studio.
- 9:37This is...
- 9:40My family.
- 9:41I have a mom, I have a sister, I have nephews and nieces, but I spend every day with these people.
- 9:50Scott, I come in at 6.30 in the morning and I leave at 6.30 at night.
- 9:59And I'm not asking anybody to feel sorry for me because I love what I do.
- 10:03So this is my family, period.
- 10:09So in high school, when you're playing basketball for Coach Harlick, is this what you pictured in the future?
- 10:15Or did it take a couple curves and end up where it was supposed to be anyway?
- 10:21No, it took so many curves along the way.
- 10:23Because when I was in college, all I wanted to do, like I told you, was be a coach.
- 10:28I wanted to coach basketball.
- 10:30I couldn't pass this California basic educational skills test.
- 10:34It was called the CBEST.
- 10:36I couldn't pass it.
- 10:37So I had to leave school.
- 10:39I was done.
- 10:40And I went and worked for some friends for $5 an hour in the pizza business.
- 10:44And then we moved over to Temecula.
- 10:47Long story short, I just got done with the pizza.
- 10:51I just got tired of the pizza business.
- 10:53And I thought, I will never tell you I fell in love with CrossFit because I didn't.
- 11:00But I fell in love with coaching.
- 11:02I fell in love with coaching.
- 11:04being surrounded by a bunch of people that like to do some crazy stuff.
- 11:07And I was, once I got into CrossFit, I was good at it.
- 11:12I was older.
- 11:13I think my first CrossFit workout, I know what it was.
- 11:17It was Jerry, the hero rod, Jerry.
- 11:22And that was probably when I was 48, 49.
- 11:26And then I just said, I want to coach.
- 11:29I like the coaches that I was around, but I wanted to teach people what to do because I was kind of getting in the way of my other coaches when I didn't have my L1.
- 11:36I was trying to coach people when I shouldn't have been in classes.
- 11:38So I got in trouble.
- 11:39So my wife's like, you better go out and get your L1 and do it yourself.
- 11:43So I did.
- 11:43And it's funny you say that because when I was growing up, I wanted to be a sports broadcaster.
- 11:52Did I think it looked like this?
- 11:54Not at all.
- 11:55Right.
- 11:56But this is what I do, right?
- 11:58This is.
- 11:59All of it.
- 12:01Right.
- 12:01So it just, you know, at 50, I found this and it was everything I wanted it to be.
- 12:11And exactly.
- 12:12And my story is the same way.
- 12:14Like I wanted to be a high school college basketball coach, either one of the two.
- 12:19And all of a sudden I'm coaching 215 members and 16 different coaches.
- 12:26And it's exactly what I want to do.
- 12:29Exactly what I pictured.
- 12:32So you do CrossFit because your wife tells you you're going to be good at it.
- 12:37Well, I did CrossFit.
- 12:38She says she knew I could do so.
- 12:40I could do some crazy shit when I was a kid, man.
- 12:42I saw somebody walk on their hands, and so I was obsessed.
- 12:47I had to try to walk on my hands.
- 12:49Jump roping was never a problem.
- 12:53Lifting weights, I never did it, but...
- 12:56I'm a coachable guy.
- 12:57I've been in sports all my life.
- 12:58And so I picked it up pretty easy.
- 13:01And so once I jumped in, I'm a little bit obsessive compulsive when I do stuff still to this day.
- 13:08And so when I jumped into CrossFit, dude,
- 13:12I was in.
- 13:13I drank the Kool-Aid.
- 13:14I was in.
- 13:14I wanted to coach.
- 13:16I wanted to do a ring muscle-up.
- 13:18I wanted to do everything that they were doing.
- 13:20And I was good at it at the start.
- 13:23And so I had success.
- 13:25And, you know, the fun stuff, things where people were telling me I was good at it.
- 13:30People were excited for me because I could do these things.
- 13:34I could do these things that people couldn't do.
- 13:36I'll never forget my wife's like, you got to try a double under.
- 13:39I'm like, double under.
- 13:40She goes, yeah, you got to pass the rope under your feet twice.
- 13:43I'm like, that's not hard.
- 13:45So she took me outside and I did it.
- 13:47And she, she was mad at me because I could do it without even practicing.
- 13:50So, so you go from athlete to coach.
- 13:59What made you want to own a gym?
- 14:02I didn't.
- 14:04I didn't.
- 14:05I just wanted to coach people.
- 14:07And then Scott, I'm telling you, the very first person that I coached, Mike Wooten, he is still with me today at this gym 11 years later.
- 14:19And it just, I had this little small space upstairs on a second story.
- 14:25And I had like eight to 10 to 12 people.
- 14:27And then it just started getting bigger.
- 14:29I had 30 to 35 people and then like, all right, we got to get out of here because they kicked us out.
- 14:35They gave us, so I rented a space here in Murrieta, 3,600 square foot space.
- 14:40I think I had 35 or 40 people at the time.
- 14:45And it just kind of turned into a hobby.
- 14:49But I didn't have a lot of people in here.
- 14:51So it was kind of scary.
- 14:52I actually was thinking about having to close up.
- 14:55And then we've taken on three gyms in the last six years.
- 15:00And so once we took on the first one, I'm like, all right.
- 15:06I can break even now.
- 15:07And then we took up another one and like, all right, I can finally start maybe making this so I can bring a little residual income in.
- 15:14And then once we took on the third one, it's just a full blown business.
- 15:18So I just, I just built it up and it was nothing I wanted to walk away from, man.
- 15:24Nothing.
- 15:25I don't, I don't, I'll never, I'll never leave this until they kick me out of here.
- 15:31So the old field of dreams, if you build it, they will come.
- 15:34Bro, I'm not kidding you.
- 15:36I never in a million years imagined I would have 215 members and know and love every one of them.
- 15:46I know it sounds like a cliché type of story, but stop by my gym.
- 15:51You'll see.
- 15:54So you not only own the gym, but you also own Everwell Studio, which I think you referenced your wife is in right now.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:03Yeah.
- 16:04And that is, it has an infrared sauna, cold plunge, contrast therapy, compression therapy, chiropractic, lash art.
- 16:14Like, I can just picture you doing some lash art.
- 16:17That's my daughter.
- 16:18That's my daughter.
- 16:21I had to give my daughter a room.
- 16:22My wife made me give my daughter a room.
- 16:27So...
- 16:29If you've been around the CrossFit space for a while, most of this makes sense.
- 16:34It's a perfect pairing to be right beside a CrossFit gym.
- 16:38Oh, it's amazing.
- 16:40We have probably 70 to 80 members in our Everwell studio.
- 16:43It's separate.
- 16:45It's a separate business from turn to CrossFit.
- 16:49You have to walk out the door walk around about 2530 feet and you can walk right into Everwell studio.
- 16:56And we have like you say we have a full time chiropractor in there.
- 17:00We have a full time massage therapist.
- 17:02We have two contrast rooms where it has infrared sauna.
- 17:07and the cold plunge we have two private rooms for that and then we have two separate tubs out front for cold plunge and we have a separate infrared sauna if you just want to do infrared sauna and we have compression therapy two chairs with a norma tech compression therapy and that thing that place is open from five o'clock in the morning till 6 30 at night our members some of our members can just come in there do it on their own they know how to turn it on they know how to cold plunge they know how to replace their towels
- 17:36Yeah, it's something that we've had.
- 17:39We're just inside of a year on that.
- 17:41But it's been a dream of ours for quite some time.
- 17:46Our chiropractor, Ashley Fiala, Dr. Ashley, she does all the competitions with me.
- 17:53We travel all over the United States together, her and her daughter and her husband and my wife.
- 17:58She's our chiropractor.
- 18:00She was the one that had this dream and vision when she went to school about three years ago, and we made it happen.
- 18:06Yeah, it's unreal.
- 18:09Yeah, it makes perfect sense.
- 18:13But with seeing you, you're kind of, you're that rough and gruff kind of athletic guy.
- 18:19And then you see like the pictures of the studio and it's very not Tony-ish.
- 18:27That's my wife.
- 18:28Right.
- 18:29It doesn't need to be me.
- 18:30I don't decorate anything.
- 18:35Yeah.
- 18:36But great, great stuff there.
- 18:39Thanks, man.
- 18:40So you, you're doing this CrossFit thing.
- 18:43At what point did you say to yourself, man, I could, I could compete at some of the higher levels?
- 18:50Well, I think my first one I did was in 2011.
- 18:52And then, um,
- 18:59I noticed that – I don't know if they had a Masters.
- 19:01I can't remember what the Masters – I think it was in 2011 I might have been my first one I competed in.
- 19:08But I think I got hurt, so I couldn't post all my scores.
- 19:11And then 2012 or 13, I think I just kind of played around with it.
- 19:16I can't really recall because I made the games in 2014 was my first year.
- 19:22But I started to – I think that's when they kind of started getting like 50 to 54 instead of like –
- 19:29I can't remember what they had because I was in the 50 to 54s when I made it my first year.
- 19:35Um, but I could do all that.
- 19:37Like I said, I could do all that, the things that they were doing and I was pretty good at them.
- 19:41And so I kind of put my hat in the ring and on 2014, I thought there was no chance I would make the games and I competed at that level.
- 19:50And, um,
- 19:52Lo and behold, I qualified 11th that year.
- 19:56And man, let me tell you, when I found out I qualified, holy cow, I cried like a baby.
- 20:03I could not believe I made it because I knew it was a big deal.
- 20:09So then you go back in 2016.
- 20:12Yeah, 2015, I missed it because I couldn't snatch.
- 20:16And if you look up any of my stats, you're going to see that this guy can walk on his hands and do double unders, but I'm not a very strong overhead guy.
- 20:25Just not.
- 20:26I just don't lift a lot of weights.
- 20:28I don't push a lot of shit over my head, but I can stay...
- 20:32with it a little bit.
- 20:33So 2015, I realized I'm like, if I could have snatched 175, I would have been in the top four that year, but I couldn't.
- 20:43And so then 2016, I went and got stronger and tried to develop a little bit of strength.
- 20:53And then I made it back in 2016, but I tore my bicep tendon a week before the games
- 21:02On the rings and still went to the games, but I finished like 14th or 16th, I think.
- 21:0916th on that year.
- 21:10Yeah.
- 21:11So that brings us to the big injury.
- 21:15And that becomes a very pivotal moment in your career.
- 21:19It does.
- 21:21And you made a decision that year between 16 and 17 after that injury.
- 21:26Can you briefly tell us what that decision was?
- 21:31Yeah, that decision was, I went ahead and I used the old adage, everybody else is doing it, why can't I?
- 21:40And I started doing testosterone replacement therapy through a doctor here in Temecula Murrieta.
- 21:48And I, like I say, I knew I wasn't supposed to be doing it.
- 21:54I knew I wasn't supposed to be, I knew it was illegal.
- 21:57I knew it was something I shouldn't have been doing and competing.
- 22:04But I did it.
- 22:05And in 2017, I made it back to the games.
- 22:09And I was also prescribed what's called an estrogen blocker, an estrozole.
- 22:16And when I went to the games in 2017, I took second place that year and we got pit tested and I failed.
- 22:30the test and was banned for four years after the 2017 games.
- 22:37Never hid behind it.
- 22:39Never tried to tell anybody I didn't do it.
- 22:41Never blamed it on anybody.
- 22:43No tainted substances.
- 22:46I was told by some real close members here that get out in front of this thing, man.
- 22:55And that's what I did right away.
- 22:59So I listened to a podcast, um, with the Taylor Hooten foundation and you go into detail.
- 23:06And if anybody wants to hear the full story, please go there and listen to it.
- 23:11Uh, it's a really good podcast.
- 23:13Uh, and you go into detail about everything, but there's a couple of things I wanted to ask you about.
- 23:18And one, you, you immediately, when you tested positive, you'd sent a letter to every, all 19 of your competitors.
- 23:27Yes.
- 23:28Apologizing for what you did.
- 23:31Yep.
- 23:32What was the feedback from the competitors when they received those letters?
- 23:36From what I remember, it was a little foggy back then because it was so, my gosh, you want to talk about standing on the edge of a cliff, Scotty.
- 23:47I received probably 14 or 15 responses from them, and they were all within...
- 23:57There were kind responses.
- 24:00I didn't receive any that were of ill sayings or words.
- 24:06Everybody said that, you know, they apologized.
- 24:09They were sorry for me.
- 24:11And hopefully that I come back, you know, in a few more years when my ban is up.
- 24:17But it was what I needed to do for my therapy, if you will, is to send that out right away.
- 24:24I mean, I sent my medal.
- 24:26I sent my second place shirt to Boschhoven.
- 24:34And you sent that to him directly.
- 24:36You didn't go through CrossFit.
- 24:37No.
- 24:38You sent it to him directly so he would get it as quickly as possible.
- 24:43I actually had his phone number or his e-mail.
- 24:46And I said, hey, man, give me your address.
- 24:50I sent it out the next day.
- 24:52And it was kind of funny because CrossFit sent me an apology kind of email saying, hey, sorry to have to do this with your situation.
- 25:03I received a lot of very good support from CrossFit also.
- 25:08They were great.
- 25:10They felt terrible for me and they were very sympathetic, but
- 25:15A rule's a rule.
- 25:16But I sent that out to Boshoven and CrossFit about a week later asked for me to send the medal back to them.
- 25:23And I told him I already sent it to Boshoven.
- 25:26He already has it.
- 25:28So, yeah, Robert got it within two or three days, the medal and the shirt that I never wore.
- 25:35So –
- 25:37The one thing I do want to point out, you did TRT, and it is completely legal other than that you were a competitor.
- 25:46Yes, sir.
- 25:49And it is something that is very typical in older men.
- 25:54And you were actually suffering symptoms that are typical of low T around all this at the same time.
- 26:02Yes, all of it.
- 26:04Still, yeah, well...
- 26:06I almost said what I didn't want to say, but I still am.
- 26:08Um, yeah, cause I don't, I don't do, you can test me anytime you want.
- 26:14I'm never going to, I'm 62 going on 63 in July or next summer.
- 26:20And there are still things that, uh, that are affected, um, by that.
- 26:27Um, so, um,
- 26:28I'm okay.
- 26:30I'm doing what I can do to try to live this CrossFit life because I'm not going to do anything that put myself in jeopardy again.
- 26:41And I won't.
- 26:43So, yes, but it is legal, and I do have members that do it that don't compete because it's out there, Scott.
- 26:50I mean, I have people ask me about it a lot, and if that's for them, I recommend that they go do it because there's nothing wrong with it other than if you're going to compete at the level that I've been fortunate enough to compete at.
- 27:07Do you think there's ever a day, especially in a sport that has masters that goes all the way to 65 plus, that there can be some kind of oversight on some therapy so men can live a normal life and still compete?
- 27:26Or do you think that the opening up that gate is just opening up that gate too big?
- 27:35That's what I think.
- 27:36I think it is.
- 27:37I've kind of thought to myself, because I've had this discussion a million times with people about, Tony, you didn't do anything wrong.
- 27:44Yeah, I did.
- 27:45I competed against people that weren't doing it.
- 27:48So I did do something wrong.
- 27:50I thought about it.
- 27:51If CrossFit were to say, yeah, you know, you can go ahead and do it.
- 27:56I think it's opening up Pandora's box, if you will.
- 27:59I just don't think that they can let that go and let that happen without having so many problems.
- 28:07In the CrossFit world, I think it would be more trouble for them than it's worth, even at 60 to 65.
- 28:14I mean, where does this stop?
- 28:17If you're going to let people do it in the games and the competitions, where does it stop?
- 28:25And now everybody's, you know, I don't want to do it because I don't have to.
- 28:28Well, I know he's doing it, but he's telling me he's not.
- 28:31I just think it's going to be too tough for CrossFit to do that.
- 28:35And I support the fact that they don't.
- 28:38So your band was up in 2021.
- 28:41Yeah.
- 28:41So you served your band from 18, 19, 20, and 21.
- 28:46Right.
- 28:50Four years.
- 28:51You come back in 22 as a clean athlete.
- 28:55Yes, sir.
- 28:59What response did you get at your first competition back from the community, your competitors?
- 29:09When I went to the games back in 22 in Madison, I was so scared that everybody was going to know who I was.
- 29:18In my age group, every single guy in my age group knew who I was and knew my past.
- 29:23Nobody else did.
- 29:24And if they did, nobody said anything to me.
- 29:28I did my four years.
- 29:29I never stood behind anything and tried to say I didn't do anything.
- 29:33My competitors, because this was the year that there were only 10 of us, and so just about every one of my competitors, I knew them all through name, through competing against them.
- 29:47I had no problems whatsoever.
- 29:50Everybody was very supportive of me being there, and those guys are the shit, man.
- 29:58Those guys are...
- 30:00I love them.
- 30:01And I compete against, like, the Wilsons and the Fameries and the Akins, Shannon Akin.
- 30:11Those guys all stood right by my side and accepted me back.
- 30:16It was amazing.
- 30:17McCarty's, I mean, there were some guys that I knew.
- 30:20Like, I'll give you an example.
- 30:21You probably know the name Will Powell, right?
- 30:24Yep.
- 30:25Man, everybody knows Will Powell.
- 30:28One of the, I mean, the Hall of Fame of the 60 or 50 plus guys.
- 30:33Been in the games.
- 30:34I think he made it nine years in a row.
- 30:37He was one of the guys that I remember that never responded to my email.
- 30:42And so he was one of the very first guys that I walked up to and told him I was sorry.
- 30:48Gave me a hug.
- 30:52And you just move on.
- 30:53Yeah.
- 30:55He is a, excuse me, Will's a super religious guy.
- 31:04So it was good.
- 31:06We were good.
- 31:08That had, like getting those first couple hours just out of the way when you were through the games in 22 had to be such a load off.
- 31:20It was, you can't even imagine.
- 31:23I was so, I told my wife, I was so scared to go because it's okay if you still believe what you believe.
- 31:30It's okay to believe if you think I'm still doing something, I'm okay with that.
- 31:34But just, you know, be able to talk to me, be able to tell me, and I'll give you my story.
- 31:38If you don't, you know, if you don't believe me and if you don't trust me, then you don't know me.
- 31:43I just want to talk to you.
- 31:45And just, and if you have something, I told all these people, these guys, if you have something to say,
- 31:50I'm right here.
- 31:51Say it to me, please, because I want you to get it off your chest.
- 31:54I don't want you to think I'm a bad guy.
- 31:57I don't.
- 31:57And, man, I had nothing but support.
- 32:00Nothing but support.
- 32:02I did another podcast that's called The Master's Chatter.
- 32:07You ever heard of that, Scott?
- 32:09Sure have.
- 32:10with Jen and those guys.
- 32:11And they interviewed me last year after the Masters Fitness Collective I won.
- 32:16And I had the same type of interview with them and told them the story also.
- 32:22And I know them to this day.
- 32:24Actually, I'm gonna do a podcast with them on the Masters Chatter here on their next one.
- 32:31I'm super excited too.
- 32:33Yeah.
- 32:34So Jamie's actually asking a question and I think we left this part out.
- 32:39I guess Hiller has made statements that you can do TRT and still not get flagged as long as you're not blasting it, right?
- 32:49But when you tested positive, it wasn't for the testosterone.
- 32:52No.
- 32:53It was for the estrogen blocker.
- 32:55And estrozole, yes.
- 32:58And Jamie's so right.
- 33:00And, and you can literally do TRT because what it is, people don't know we're given a range.
- 33:07All of us have a testosterone range as we get older.
- 33:10And let's say 60 to 60 or the 60 year olds have a range.
- 33:15I think it's somewhere like 225 to like 900.
- 33:16And so if you fall inside that 220 to 900 range,
- 33:24To my knowledge, CrossFit, there's nothing that really they're going to be able to do because you're not going to get flagged for anything.
- 33:30The estrogen blockers are.
- 33:32Now, if you go over 900, then I believe, again, I don't want to speak out of turn.
- 33:37I've watched Hiller all the time.
- 33:39If you go over 900, then they test your B sample.
- 33:42And if that is also over, then you can get a pop for, what's it called?
- 33:51I just had it.
- 33:55Outside, sorry, I can't remember the term.
- 34:01Oh, androgynous.
- 34:04Dang it, I can't remember the word.
- 34:06But an outside source of testosterone.
- 34:10Androgynous, that's what it is.
- 34:13Yeah, I'm no good at all of that stuff.
- 34:15I leave that up to Hiller and people who do all that research.
- 34:20I've talked to Hiller myself about it.
- 34:24But I did leave out earlier that the estrogen blocker was called what?
- 34:32Anestrozole.
- 34:34Anestrozole.
- 34:35And that's what you tested positive for?
- 34:37Yes.
- 34:38Anestrozole is a hormone for women and breast cancer.
- 34:48Yeah, and you fully admitted, and I wasn't leaving out like a secret for the people in the chat.
- 34:54Tony has admitted this on every podcast, everything that's been put out since 2017.
- 35:00So I'm not like exposing a secret here or anything.
- 35:05Nope, not at all.
- 35:07And I told you when we talked earlier, you can ask me anything, my brother.
- 35:13Yeah.
- 35:14So I want to move on to this year's legends.
- 35:20You, and I think one of the persons, Kenneth in the chat said the testosterone thing is androgynous.
- 35:27Yeah.
- 35:28Thank you.
- 35:28That's it.
- 35:29I couldn't think of it.
- 35:30Androgynous.
- 35:32Yeah.
- 35:34You, you come to the games in 23.
- 35:38You don't do as well as you did in 22, right?
- 35:42Yeah, 22 actually took second.
- 35:45And 23 took fourth.
- 35:46Still a great performance.
- 35:48Yeah, I was literally one and a half seconds from being on the podium.
- 35:56Wow.
- 35:57Yeah, it was close.
- 35:59And then you come to Legends, which is...
- 36:03one of the premier masters competitions there are in the country.
- 36:07I mean, they had over 500 athletes there this year.
- 36:10Um, beautiful facility.
- 36:13Um, a lot of competition.
- 36:16You start off the week with a bang and then a little bit of a flutter, but then you end like a house on fire.
- 36:29So go ahead.
- 36:30You start with swim.
- 36:33Apparently you're good at that.
- 36:35I don't know why.
- 36:36I mean, I'm from South Tahoe High School.
- 36:40We never had a pool.
- 36:43My mom would send me in summer times to my dad's in Las Vegas, and we had an apartment there, and all we did was swim.
- 36:49So evidently I can swim, Scott.
- 36:52In the 2022 games, they had a swim event.
- 36:57Do you remember that?
- 36:58The swim and ski erg?
- 37:00Yep.
- 37:01I took first in that.
- 37:03And for some reason I can swim.
- 37:05So the swimming events, I love them, but put me out on a run and I am no good.
- 37:11Hence the 2023 5k.
- 37:15Yeah, there you go.
- 37:19So then you go to under pressure, which is a lifting event that you've admitted earlier in this podcast.
- 37:24That is not your thing.
- 37:25There's a clean and jerk and a snatch both overhead, not your strong suit.
- 37:30no no and and and no i was and when i went to legends i was hurt i have um a torn calf torn right calf and some and shin splints to my left so i wasn't jumping i wasn't able to run and i wasn't able to lift anything hardly over my head going into that event i didn't think i would even finish the the the competition at all because how bad my calf was wow yeah
- 37:59Then you go to Hell's Bells, which is the grip event where if you let go, you had to do devil's press.
- 38:08Were you able to go unbroken?
- 38:09I was.
- 38:11And you should have seen all 20 of us were like asking these.
- 38:14Because when you're 60 years old, we all talk to each other.
- 38:18We don't hold secrets.
- 38:19Like, hey, do you think you're going to hold on to this dumbbell, these dumbbells for the entire 240 feet?
- 38:24And everybody's like, hell no, I'm not going to be able to hold on to those things.
- 38:28No way.
- 38:30Every single one of us held on to them.
- 38:33Yeah.
- 38:33Nobody wants to do that.
- 38:34I went unbroken, yeah, on the whole thing.
- 38:37Yep.
- 38:39And you ended up taking third in that event.
- 38:42Yeah, which was way better than I thought.
- 38:45Way better.
- 38:48So there's a little bit of your comeback.
- 38:50Then the jump, which you just admitted you had a torn calf.
- 38:54Yeah.
- 38:55Typically healthy, would that event have gone better for you?
- 38:58I would have chased down Wilson, and he knows it if he's watching this.
- 39:05That right there was like my jam.
- 39:08I'm not the greatest rope climber because I'm not a very tall guy.
- 39:13I'm a big guy.
- 39:14But that was my jam.
- 39:16I mean, that double under crossover thing.
- 39:19That's everything that I love doing.
- 39:21I had 60 double unders, not a problem, but I, I kept breaking up the double unders.
- 39:26I had to literally do the crossovers one legged with my left leg only.
- 39:31And then I like the second half, I was able to put both feet down, but yeah, I think I took ninth in that one.
- 39:37So it was just a little bit of a damage control.
- 39:40I think I took ninth in that one.
- 39:42Right.
- 39:42Do you have that?
- 39:44Yeah, it was ninth.
- 39:45Yeah.
- 39:45And you said you did one-legged crossovers.
- 39:48Shouldn't you win Spirit of the Games for that?
- 39:51What's that?
- 39:52Shouldn't you win Spirit of the Games for that?
- 39:54Yeah, right?
- 39:58Me and Roman.
- 39:59Sorry.
- 40:01I'm still bitter about that.
- 40:02Yeah, I know.
- 40:03I hear you.
- 40:04I feel bad for him.
- 40:06Well...
- 40:07And this is way off topic, but I was there for all the Masters events.
- 40:12There were Masters athletes at the end of that, on the last event.
- 40:16It was jump rope, correct?
- 40:17The last event of which one?
- 40:20Of the games.
- 40:22The last event of the games?
- 40:24Or next.
- 40:25One of the events, anyway.
- 40:26There was jump rope.
- 40:28I saw no less than five athletes going one-legged because they hurt one leg or another.
- 40:34Yeah.
- 40:34Oh, yeah.
- 40:36And for someone to be elevated to Spirit of the Games when the Masters athletes and, hell, the Adaptive athletes, some of them only had one leg.
- 40:45Right.
- 40:46Just seemed a bit much.
- 40:49But that's my little riff again.
- 40:51Gotcha.
- 40:52Gotcha.
- 40:55Jamie says, I love the older groups.
- 40:57They do so much.
- 40:58They do share so much.
- 41:00Jim, who Jim Pieper, she coaches, is always chatting.
- 41:05Absolutely.
- 41:06Hi, Jamie.
- 41:06Man, now I know exactly who Jamie is.
- 41:08Yes.
- 41:10Jim Pieper is amazing.
- 41:12And again, we all share everything.
- 41:15Are you going to do this?
- 41:15How much are you going to lift?
- 41:17Like we tell each other everything.
- 41:21I can't even tell you.
- 41:22I'm like every time, every single one, there's Pulse Mail, all those guys out there, Wilson.
- 41:29brandy lane we all just like hey what are you going to do in this one do you able to how much you're going to be able to lift can you walk on your hands can you they're all very honest so i lost you for just a brief second uh you were you mentioned some names and then that they share and then you kind of blurped out a little bit
- 41:53No, I was just saying that, you know, we all ask, can you walk on your hands?
- 41:56Can you swim?
- 41:57And then we're all pretty honest about like what we can do.
- 42:01Like, nah, I can't swim.
- 42:02I'm a terrible swimmer.
- 42:03Or I can only snatch like 115 or 135 or I'm hurt.
- 42:09Or yeah, we all just kind of share.
- 42:10Jamie's right.
- 42:11We share everything.
- 42:14Yeah.
- 42:15And just, you know, Jamie was a champion as well.
- 42:17She was 40 to 44 year old champion at legends herself.
- 42:21So coaching Jim.
- 42:23Yes.
- 42:24Yeah.
- 42:25Yeah.
- 42:25Congratulations, Jamie.
- 42:29And then once you finish jump, you come back Saturday morning and then you finish no lower than second on any event on the last four.
- 42:40Right.
- 42:40Yeah.
- 42:41So Enter Sandman, that's the bar muscle-up, clean and jerk, clean and snatch.
- 42:48So, yeah, interesting story on that one.
- 42:52Because, you know, we're 60.
- 42:55And Bob and Joe are really, I would consider them good friends of mine.
- 43:02And I can speak with them because I've been doing Legends for five years.
- 43:07I've won legends three times and took second one time and didn't do anything another time.
- 43:13So I've been with those guys for years.
- 43:16But when that workout came out, I pulled Bob aside.
- 43:19And I'm like, dude, you need to let us do muscle-ups.
- 43:23And I don't know.
- 43:24He didn't say he was going to change it because of me.
- 43:27But I go, we need to... The sport is evolving so fast.
- 43:33And us 60-year-olds need to go out there and be able to show off our skills.
- 43:39We can do muscle-ups, not just chest-to-bar.
- 43:42Plus, I told him...
- 43:44There's such a disparity with four chest bars and then we're lifting weights that there needs to be a separator.
- 43:50And this is what I talked to Bob.
- 43:52Bob was like an open book.
- 43:54He's like, Tony, we messed up.
- 43:56No big deal.
- 43:58We'll try to fix this.
- 43:59Or maybe next time, he kind of said in his words,
- 44:04We shit the bed.
- 44:05We'll do, you know, I don't know what I can do.
- 44:07Nothing I can do.
- 44:08But I said, I told him, I appreciate him talking to me, but these people need to see that a 60 year old.
- 44:14Can do muscle ups.
- 44:16And so, yeah, as you know, if you remember the format, it was all 60 year olds were just chest to bars.
- 44:24Right.
- 44:26Later on that day, he did change it to the last round of bar muscle-ups.
- 44:30I hope I'm not getting anybody in trouble.
- 44:32I'm just being honest.
- 44:34But Bob changed that.
- 44:35And I don't know if it's because I talked to him or somebody else did, but we got to do bar muscle-ups.
- 44:43So Jamie said, yeah, I loved how it ended with it.
- 44:45Show it off if you've got it.
- 44:47That's what I told Bob.
- 44:49I said, Bob, we can do this.
- 44:51And if I'm not mistaken, Scott, and Jamie, I'm not quite sure if you saw a 60-year-old's
- 44:57I believe there were, out of the 19 guys, because one guy had to drop out, out of the 19 guys, if I'm not mistaken, Scott, there were 13 to 16 of us that could do bar muscle-ups, and I think there were more.
- 45:10I think about every single guy could do a bar muscle-up.
- 45:15I'll give you an example.
- 45:16The guy I think that won that, because I took second in that one, Scott?
- 45:21Second, yep.
- 45:22Yeah, the guy that won that, if you look,
- 45:26He was 64, and his name is... If you have it there, help me out.
- 45:34I don't.
- 45:35I wish I did.
- 45:36He's 64, and he won that.
- 45:41And he literally, I think he took like...
- 45:46second to last in the entire competition but that was his time to shine you know he he took literally 19th place in that competition i think and yet he took a first place in that and he was so proud of that that he got to do that and take a first place and so that was kind of my example indirectly to bob was like we gotta we gotta get to show off man we can do this stuff
- 46:12So a couple of things, Jamie says, I think he realized a few things that weekend and was quite open about it.
- 46:19He was.
- 46:20Bob and Joe are awesome, man.
- 46:22They're open to hearing what we have to say.
- 46:25And I was kind of speaking for all the guys.
- 46:29I'm kind of a, you know, one of the veterans out there.
- 46:31I've been around Legends for a long time, been around the games.
- 46:34And so I took the opportunity to talk to Bob and
- 46:38Yeah, Jamie's right.
- 46:40It was good for us to show off.
- 46:42It was fun.
- 46:45Just from a personal experience, so I have a girl in Nebraska who makes the leaderboard posts on Instagram for us whenever we're at an event.
- 46:54So for Legends, every event she put out, top fives for every division, even scaled, even team, like everybody got a leaderboard.
- 47:05I saw it.
- 47:05So many people shared that.
- 47:08That had that exact case where they finished 20th for the weekend, but they won an event.
- 47:16And they wanted all their friends and family to know that they had a highlight that weekend.
- 47:21I'm telling you, it's a big deal.
- 47:24It is.
- 47:25It's a big deal.
- 47:26If you take a top three in one of those events...
- 47:28it's a big deal.
- 47:30We're all proud of what we do and what we can do out there.
- 47:34I wish I could remember this guy's name, Scott, because I know who it is.
- 47:36I just can't think of his name because I want to give him a shout out.
- 47:39He was a, he was a super cool guy too.
- 47:43Super good guy.
- 47:45So I will look it up.
- 47:48Once I ask you about the next cup.
- 47:49So you have another one bites the dust.
- 47:51Yeah.
- 47:52This is where things get a real confused in my head as to what the events were.
- 47:57Okay, so another one bites the dust was I can I can help you out with it.
- 48:05I remember it.
- 48:06Okay, go ahead.
- 48:07I'm pretty because I remember right where I was in the staging area when it happened.
- 48:10I'm pretty sure that another one bites the dust was the squat cleans and handstand walks.
- 48:19Yep.
- 48:20Okay.
- 48:20Squat cleans and handstand walks.
- 48:22And, you know, there they give us some handstand walks.
- 48:25I thought we should have got to walk a little further.
- 48:28However, the fourth and the fifth round, they let us walk 20 feet.
- 48:33And so, again, of course, I'm biased, but we're going to lift, you know, we're squat cleaning 135.
- 48:40Not a heavy weight for a lot of, you know, lifters.
- 48:43But for me, it's right there.
- 48:45You know, it's – I think we did –
- 48:49Five feet handstand walk, two squat cleans at 135, 10 foot four, 15 foot six, 20 feet eight, 20 feet 10.
- 49:01That was the workout.
- 49:02And so, yeah.
- 49:03So, and I think that was the only one that I might've been one of the only ones that finished that.
- 49:09Was I first in that one?
- 49:10You were definitely first.
- 49:11Yeah.
- 49:12Well, it's walking on your hands.
- 49:13It's what you do.
- 49:14Oh, I've been doing it for 50 years.
- 49:19So the name you were looking for was Brett Karihara.
- 49:24He took, he, he was, he took first in that one.
- 49:28Yep.
- 49:28Okay.
- 49:29So he wasn't in 19th place.
- 49:31He wasn't in 19th place.
- 49:3319th place took third.
- 49:35Okay.
- 49:35That was his name.
- 49:36Bruce Marko.
- 49:38bruce marco you guys remember that name bruce marco because he's going to be around and he is super excited about being 65 just because he gets to compete against it at 65 he told me that he goes you wait next year i'm going to be 65 i knew that i knew he had a good event that one yeah yeah he thanks he took third right behind you yep
- 50:01Then you go into the last day and it's the back to back.
- 50:04And everybody I've talked to said, you kind of look at it and you're like, which one do I want to go all in for?
- 50:10And which one do I want to like do it either tired or paced?
- 50:15Did you have that same attitude or did, cause you took a first and a second.
- 50:20That workout was so hard.
- 50:25So if you look back on this workout, and I'm sure Bob and Joe have heard it, we squatted a lot.
- 50:32We dumbbell squat cleaned, we squat cleaned, and then all of a sudden we turn around, now we've got to- Thruster.
- 50:41Goblet, or goblet squat.
- 50:43Oh, that too, yeah.
- 50:44Right, now we have to goblet squat, and then some more squatting with thrusters.
- 50:50So when they put us out on the floor,
- 50:54I was in lane number 10.
- 50:56Now, if you put 20 of us out there, I would be in the middle, right?
- 51:01But they had one through 10 and then they started at 11 at the other end.
- 51:05through 20, so nobody knew who was in first place unless the announcer said something.
- 51:12Second place was clear across the floor, so I couldn't keep track of him, and he couldn't keep track of me.
- 51:19It was Wilson.
- 51:21However, third place was right in front of me.
- 51:28I can't remember his name.
- 51:30Third place was right in front of me.
- 51:32Tim Haynes.
- 51:33Tim Haynes.
- 51:34Nobody knew who Tim Haynes was, by the way.
- 51:36This guy was an amazing athlete, and nobody knew who he was.
- 51:41The third day, he was in second place, Scott, and I was like, hey, you guys, who's Tim Haynes?
- 51:45I asked four people, and none of them knew who Tim Haynes was.
- 51:48I'm like, you guys, he's in second place, and none of us know who he is.
- 51:53And he finished one point out of second for the weekend.
- 51:55Yeah.
- 51:56Yes.
- 51:56So he was in front of me at the last workout, but he had his back to me.
- 52:02So he couldn't see me, but I could see him.
- 52:04So all I did the entire time was stayed with him.
- 52:08That's all I did.
- 52:10It was almost...
- 52:12It was a fair advantage because I was in first place.
- 52:15So I was, you know, I should have been able to.
- 52:18But it was almost an unfair advantage to him and Wilson not to be able to see where I was.
- 52:23Because all I did the whole time was watch Haynes.
- 52:26And I just stayed with him.
- 52:27And then in the last 30 seconds on the goblet squats, he kind of slowed down.
- 52:31And I just busted out seven as fast as I could.
- 52:34And he only got five.
- 52:35So I beat him by two.
- 52:37And right then I'm like...
- 52:38I'm in pretty good shape now because I don't know what Wilson did, but Wilson was a little bit behind me.
- 52:44And I thought maybe, I thought maybe I could beat Brian in that first one.
- 52:48He's a little bit tall.
- 52:49He's a lot taller athlete than I am.
- 52:51So those, uh, those goblet squats, he had a long, long ways to go on those goblet squats.
- 52:59Only go as fast as you need to.
- 53:01yeah and then on the last part um again i just i went out as fast as i could i tried to again i got to watch haines in front of me i just stayed with him and it was the most awful three minutes you could even imagine and i think i got like eight burpees and he got like seven or something like that and yeah and oh here's another example of a guy look up mark anderson who won that event scott
- 53:32He was literally one of two people, I think, in the entire competition that finished that workout.
- 53:43Yeah, I know not many people did.
- 53:45Actually, it says on the leaderboard he got capped.
- 53:50Mark Anderson did?
- 53:50Yeah.
- 53:55Somebody finished that in our group.
- 54:01He is listed as the winner with a score of 10.
- 54:05Oh, okay.
- 54:06Shoot.
- 54:07Speaking out of turn.
- 54:10But it looks like he came really close.
- 54:13Oh, okay.
- 54:14Dang it.
- 54:14I thought he finished that thing.
- 54:16Okay.
- 54:17I stand corrected.
- 54:18Yeah, because it was 50 thrusters, right?
- 54:23Yep.
- 54:24And how many – you had to finish up with burpees?
- 54:28Yes.
- 54:30Yeah.
- 54:3220 burpees or something like that.
- 54:36Yeah.
- 54:36Sunday, Sunday.
- 54:38Oh yeah.
- 54:40I thought somebody, I thought he finished it.
- 54:42Mark Anderson finished, but he finished first 67.
- 54:45I can't remember.
- 54:46So we got 17 burpees.
- 54:49Yeah.
- 54:49So it got to 17.
- 54:52Yeah.
- 54:54So, uh, someone in grubs group did finish, but maybe one or two all day.
- 55:01All day.
- 55:04I told everybody that is the darkest place I had gone to and I don't know how long.
- 55:11I have not gone there.
- 55:14I can't even remember the last time I went to that level where I laid on the ground and was hurting.
- 55:23So you end the weekend as a champ?
- 55:27Yes, sir.
- 55:29What does that mean to you to win a major competition in a career where you had to sit out for a while?
- 55:40And so you can only appreciate it more, right, now that you get the opportunity and you win?
- 55:52It was amazing.
- 55:55Last year when I competed at Legends in Tennessee, Brian Wilson took first and I took second.
- 56:02He crushed it.
- 56:04And then this year I got to stand up there and Wilson took second.
- 56:08And it was totally cool to stand up there with this guy.
- 56:11I mean, if you know Brian Wilson, this guy is a amazing athlete and just a crazy great human being.
- 56:19So to know that I got him,
- 56:25I was proud, but to be able to represent the 60 year olds at Legends and stand on that podium, my friend, it was an honor.
- 56:36And Joe and Bob, they do a great job.
- 56:41And I was very proud to represent the 60 year olds as a champion.
- 56:45I'll tell you, it was a big deal for me, big deal.
- 56:49So I'm going to finish up with this one big question.
- 56:52And that is next year, the games are being taken over by legends.
- 56:58Yeah.
- 57:00Right.
- 57:00You've spoken, you spoke about Bob and Joe throughout this podcast.
- 57:06Are the masters in the right hands?
- 57:09Oh, without a doubt.
- 57:12I called this last year.
- 57:14I told one of my athletes here, I said, you mark my words.
- 57:18you mark my word this year that I'm making the games will be the last year of the game.
- 57:22The CrossFit will have the games.
- 57:24She didn't believe me and I didn't know anything.
- 57:27It just seems like it was going that way.
- 57:30You know, every year after the games, Scott, you could just hear us all complaining.
- 57:36I mean, the CrossFit knows it.
- 57:38I'm not, there's no secrets.
- 57:39We all just complained about no, the coverage.
- 57:43And, and I'm, I was there.
- 57:45It's not that they were doing anything wrong, but,
- 57:49You know, we weren't the show, that's for sure.
- 57:52So I think this year with Bob and Joe, you know, this is going to, we're going to be the show.
- 57:57We're going to be, you know, we're going to be the ones that people are there to see.
- 58:00I think they have their hands full.
- 58:03Oh boy.
- 58:04And I know CrossFit's going to help them in some way as I've been, what I've been told.
- 58:10But I like the field.
- 58:12I wasn't a big proponent of the, of the, of the larger fields that,
- 58:18but I'm kind of coming around on it.
- 58:22I think 20 guys in our category, I think that's high, but I think you're still going to get 20 good guys out there.
- 58:33It's not going to be like 10.
- 58:35It's really hard to make 10, and it's not going to be obviously as hard, if you will, to make 20, but...
- 58:41I like the format.
- 58:43I think Joe and Bob, I don't know where it's going to be.
- 58:45I wish we would know.
- 58:47I mean, so we can set up some facilities and find out what we need to do, right?
- 58:56And that's the only part right now that I'm a little bit cloudy about and would tell Bob and Joe, we need an announcement.
- 59:04We need to know where we're going.
- 59:05We need a date so we can start taking care of our...
- 59:11some of our things that we need to do in case we make it.
- 59:16Speaking to both of them, I think they want to make an announcement more than anything, but they just can't.
- 59:24Oh, I got you.
- 59:26See, and that makes sense.
- 59:27That totally makes sense.
- 59:28I'm sure there's something going on that I don't know.
- 59:31Yeah.
- 59:32I honestly believe at this point, they don't, they don't have a signed contract with a location.
- 59:38Oh, I got you.
- 59:39I've not been told that.
- 59:41That's just the feeling I get.
- 59:45There's just little I's and T's that need finished up before it's finalized.
- 59:51So you can't make the announcement until there's a signed deal.
- 59:54Yeah, well, that makes sense, Scott.
- 59:56I mean, you're way more privy to this information or any information than I am.
- 1:00:02That's just my guess.
- 1:00:04I really liked...
- 1:00:07the venue we were just at, I really did.
- 1:00:10I enjoyed that venue at ASU a ton.
- 1:00:14And I'd love to go back there.
- 1:00:17And I don't know where it's going to be, though, or dates.
- 1:00:21I don't think it's going to be there.
- 1:00:23I know Legends, December Legends is going back there again.
- 1:00:29So you'll get to go back there then.
- 1:00:33But I think my only advice about ASU was make sure the finish line is away from the chaos.
- 1:00:43as a spectator and someone covering the sport, there were too many times where like you were on that upper, upper playing field and it ended like at the windows and that's where everybody was.
- 1:00:57And you couldn't tell who finished first, second or third.
- 1:01:00Yeah.
- 1:01:02If you finish coming out of the chaos, then the spectator sees who's first, who's second, who's third.
- 1:01:09And it makes, it makes it more compelling watching.
- 1:01:12Yeah, totally.
- 1:01:14Well, in the same event, the last event, Sunday, Bloody Sunday, nobody knew anything.
- 1:01:22Nobody knew anything, and that's where it was kind of tough because that floor layout, and I would tell Bob and Joe if they were standing here, that floor layout, nobody knew who was what.
- 1:01:34And that's the one thing that the games does better than anybody.
- 1:01:39You always see a finish line.
- 1:01:42Yeah.
- 1:01:43Oh, I got you.
- 1:01:43Yeah.
- 1:01:44You know what I mean?
- 1:01:44You always in there, someone that you have to run through it.
- 1:01:48Yeah.
- 1:01:48To get to it.
- 1:01:49Right.
- 1:01:49Cause you're running away from wherever the chaos is on the field.
- 1:01:53Yeah.
- 1:01:53I got you.
- 1:01:54Yeah.
- 1:01:54I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 1:01:57Yeah.
- 1:01:57I mean, there were a few things there.
- 1:01:58They were really space orientation.
- 1:02:01There was a little bit tough for them with, with this biggest field as they had.
- 1:02:06You put 20 people on that top section up there doing squat cleans and handstand walks.
- 1:02:14That was tight.
- 1:02:17It was.
- 1:02:19There were moments I'm sitting there with my camera going, we're going to have a traffic accident on the 95 here.
- 1:02:24Yeah, those squat cleans for some of those, I mean, some of those ladies, those squat cleans in the 45 to 49 age group,
- 1:02:32um that was 155 they had because that's where my athlete Ashley Fiala she took sixth um she um she said that I think there were like nine or six to nine women that couldn't even do 155 and so but they were trying right and that's pretty tough if you fail and and yeah and fall back and fall backwards right
- 1:02:58Yeah, that 155 was heavy for some athletes.
- 1:03:04You know, I'm close with Jamie.
- 1:03:05I was watching her compete.
- 1:03:07That's heavy for her.
- 1:03:08She can do it, but that's going to be where she slows down.
- 1:03:14Yep.
- 1:03:16Same thing with my athlete.
- 1:03:17She did well on it because she can walk on her hands.
- 1:03:19She's a total gymnast.
- 1:03:21She went unbroken the whole way on her hands.
- 1:03:24But that 155, that was heavy.
- 1:03:25Yeah.
- 1:03:29Tony, it has been more than a pleasure today.
- 1:03:33You are one of my favorite guests of all time.
- 1:03:36I just love like chatting with you and we're going to have to have you back on again and again.
- 1:03:41I appreciate it, man.
- 1:03:44I, I love the CrossFit community.
- 1:03:47I, I,

- 1:03:51And when I, I mean, I brag to everybody.
- 1:03:55I'm like, I'm going to do a podcast with Clydesdale media.
- 1:03:59And I am so excited to be on this show.
- 1:04:02I, you know, I went and did my homework and looked at what you did.
- 1:04:05And thank you for letting me share my story again.
- 1:04:09It's a big deal to me, man.
- 1:04:12I just, this is what I love to do.
- 1:04:15Yeah.
