- Chesla Wechsler: So lucky us, I managed to get Carol back, who has power, so lucky her, I guess somebody gardened with Joe Bruck and got the got the grid turned back on. Now, Carol, you not only watched season two, episode four of Best Medicine, No Place Like Om but you also viewed the podcast that we did already. So what were Carol: Yes. Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: your impressions of the show? And then you can actually comment on everybody else's impressions too. Carol: Well, it was highly emotional for me. I agree it was more the emotional side versus the comedy side. I felt so bad for Louisa. and then Mark and and his goofiness. But how how they handled that I thought was super sweet, letting him walk the stage and you know, get Chesla Wechsler: I love that. Carol: his d yeah, get his diploma and and then his mom finally realizing she could take a breath that my son now is graduated and he's grown and my job here is done to a point, I guess. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I I wonder you have any idea what that might mean for the two of them? Carol: that's a good question. I think they still have a big codependency going on that there's still a lot more of that to work through on their end. But I think it took a step the other night. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I agree. I I almost feel tempted to go back to season one when Mark and Louisa had just broken up and she talks about something like couples counseling or something I wanna remind Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: myself what that was all about. Carol: Yeah, that I in fact I just watched that episode, literally just finished watching it. It was when Chesla Wechsler: cool. Carol: Louisa went to buy vitamin C from her and as she was getting ready to leave, she says, I was gonna bring this up in couples counseling, but and Sally Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Carol: had that hurt look on her face, but yeah. Because Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Okay. Carol: The comment was, he's a grown man, but is he really? You know. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yeah. So it's been a recurring theme. It's it's nice that we can Carol: Yes, Chesla Wechsler: see at least the the cracking of the nutshell because as you said, I mean y these things, codependency kind of relationships are not cured overnight, but at least this might open the door to it. Carol: Right. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: Yeah. But the wellness retreat, the meditation center when Martin said, No shenanigans and Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Carol: all of a sudden he's drawn just like that to the Yuzu or whatever his name was. It's like, geez. Squirrel Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yep. Instant shenanigans. Yes. Carol: Yeah, but it it I found it interesting in how he Martin was trying to get to Boston, but he didn't seem too bothered to be drawn back to help the people of Port Wenn. And we didn't hear the conversation. that you know what Eden was telling him. But I did notice he never did say, I love you, at the end of any conversation. And I think it was Mel or somebody that mentioned the eye roll and just kinda Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: like, yeah, you're kinda getting on my nerves right now, kind of feeling. Chesla Wechsler: It but must it was done well, I thought, because I the eye roll that I know that I noticed was Elaine is kinda going at him, at him, at him when he's leaving his house in her care for the weekend. And it was Carol: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: kind of like, well the last thing that she's digging him with is trying to make your girlfriend happy and he's kinda like, Ugh, whatever, right? But that could be she's not my girlfriend, that doesn't feel comfortable to me, but it could also just be like a girlfriend just enough, right? You've you've you've been needling me with all these things. Carol: Yeah, you get Yeah. Yeah. I'm just trying to get out of here, so just let me go. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. he certainly seemed like he was trying. he really was wrapping the place up. He was trying to leave early to get there, right? He was getting in his car and get out the door when Sally caught him. And then, he would have gone had his had a ladder not gone through his windshield. And then he f instantly was like, Find me a new way to get there right? Carol: Right. Yeah, and when Louisa told him to go after they helped that one gentleman and Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: he said, You sure and he bolted once she said yes. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Carol: But there was still I still have that lingering feeling like he wasn't all that anxious to make that trip. Chesla Wechsler: Hmm. It seemed like it was what what was supposed to be done. And I and I guess I wouldn't say he didn't feel obligated to do it. He didn't feel he didn't look like he was dreading it. Carol: No. Chesla Wechsler: But it was it wasn't an I I'm really excited to go to the gala with Eden. Carol: Right. Yeah. Maybe just to get away from everybody with everything that was going on prior to him trying to get out. mean, yeah, Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: he was trying to get out before, but then all this other stuff just kept coming in waves and I think he was just like and I I'm guilty of it too, just get me away from this, you know. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Sure. No, it makes sense. What about Sally and Eddie? Or Sarah and Eddie. Carol: Sarah. Yeah. You know, I was watching that and it's like no wonder why Martin has a little bit of trouble with like commitment and and that type of thing because the apple didn't seem to fall too far from the tree, even though she's the aunt, he spent some quality time with her. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: So is this a family dynamic type of thing? Did he learn that from her in some way? Chesla Wechsler: I guess if we looked at the timeline, she was having the affair with the principal during the time when he was visiting. And then Robert basically gave her the ultimatum saying, He's not coming unless you end this Carol: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: So she kind of was committing in a way. I mean, maybe to a person who she really couldn't have a commitment with, you know, can't unless the guy's gonna get divorced and marry her, you know. But then Robert didn't send Martin. So it's not clear that Martin ever saw her after the hurt. Carol: True. Yeah, and he didn't know until that sleepover at the school when Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: she admitted to him what why he was no longer sent to her. So yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah. But, who knows, maybe what they've all seen in their families. certainly Robert and Vanessa have a commitment. they've they've been Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: married for a million years. Carol: Yeah, they seem to have a for what is good for them, a good marriage, Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. You know, not only do we need to hear the Rosemary stuff, but the blood phobia, I think we're all convinced that the blood phobia came about because he saw this little girl who reminded him of Rosemary in the accident. And we all believe that there's unresolved grief having to do with Rosemary's accident. And there may be something secretive going on there as far as how it all got caused. but I don't think we really have an answer to why he's never found somebody who he's really ever loved, right? 'Cause in the very first episode of the show, Louise is like, you've you've haven't you ever had somebody you thought you were gonna spend the rest of your life with? And he was like, actually, no. So that could be an unexplored area. Carol: Yeah, It they I hope they do go into the Rosemary thing and open that can of worms so to speak. But yeah, I mean is has he had other relationships outside of Eden that have failed or, you know. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. We don't know. And has Sarah had other relationships since the principal other than this Eddie McCroy guy? Carol: Right. Chesla Wechsler: And that seems to just be, you know, we fight, we make up, and then we're strangers again. Carol: Yeah, yeah. She is that that was a fun er fun interaction between the the two of them. I just kinda had to laugh when you know, George was like, "Hot goss," Chesla Wechsler: That's right. And, you know, just how she was reacting to him, you know, like so he's Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: he's doing everything very nicely. And she's having this right? Yeah. You're Carol: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, back off. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: you're breathing too loud. Carol: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's quite the reaction to have to somebody like that, but okay. Chesla Wechsler: D do you think she's just looking for excuses or? Carol: part of it might be the she likes her independence, you know, just doesn't want anybody to tell her what to do. And is he she feels threatened by him infringing on her independence? I mean, he didn't seem to. I mean, they just had the conversation, yeah, it's nice to sit on the couch and watch a movie and talk and that kind of stuff, but she back when Martin was trying to tell her, you know, retire, sell the boat, get into Mahjong. that's just too you know, that's what was the word she said that's too trendy. Chesla Wechsler: I think that Sarah, part of it is just when you're alone for a long time, anybody who's upsetting your Apple cart is annoying. Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Even if they're doing nothing out of the ordinary. I mean he's just breathing. Carol: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Ch and as he said, generally a a good thing. Carol: Yeah, yeah, you kinda need to breathe. Chesla Wechsler: So where do you think where do you think Sarah and Martin and Louisa go from here? Carol: Well, it's going to be interesting with Louisa and the new auditor, whatever they call the Renee's replacement. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Parker. Carol: Yeah. Now can Louisa use him? This isn't nice, but as a tool to reach out to Martin and kind of flare something up, you know, like. you don't get your act together, buddy, then Chesla Wechsler: Is she giving us any signals that she's Interested? Because I think right now she's very much backed off because Martin is dating Eden. Carol: Yeah, but there's still that longing. I kinda see a longing and it's like when they were working together when they were trying to get that I keep forgetting his name, but trying Chesla Wechsler: Fred. Carol: to get him, yeah, into his happy place. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: And how they work together and he's she told him, Well, you saved his life. He goes, No, you did. You know, you Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: you talked him into a place where I couldn't even think where to go. And maybe little bits and pieces of them working together that might build something up to where they go, Yeah, we're good for each other. We need each Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. They're Carol: other. Chesla Wechsler: they're certainly comfortable with each other. I thought the scene on the dock where he's kidding her, which is a big step for him. He's being the sort of it it's not mean spirited teasing, it's cute teasing, right? And then she just Carol: Right. Chesla Wechsler: shoves him. Carol: Yeah. Yeah, 'cause he knew that line would get to her. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: 'Cause it goes back to that baked bean supper when they asked him, Do you get it? And he's looking around and everybody's getting along and laughing and he goes, No, you know. So it he knew I think that that would get to her, make her laugh. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And he's come so such a long way, don't you think? Carol: Yeah. yeah. He's getting comfortable being in that town again. It's just it Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. He really seems like one of them. Carol: Yeah. Yeah, it's with Glendon out of the way, he wasn't in this last episode. I didn't re I don't recall seeing him. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. No. Carol: he just brings that factor up in Martin, you know. And with him not being around, he's little more relaxed when he's not part of the scene. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Carol: But that's his role. That's his, you know, that actor's role is to be that It's a word antagonist or whatever it is that Chesla Wechsler: kinda think that and I think you might have brought this up in the last episode that when he when Glendon was leaving and he was sort of giving Martin a hard time about, you know, the weather was perfect for Martin's crate run and everything, that it was it was more good natured, he wasn't really serious about it. So I kinda think that they might be able to patch things up. Carol: Yeah, one of the big things that Glendon had over Martin once he revealed to the authorities that yeah, he's got this phobia, and then Martin told the whole town in that the first episode for this new season, it's like, well, yeah, he's got me there, you know, so I Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: can't s use that. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: But he seems like he kinda thinks he's got something else over him. But know, it just Chesla Wechsler: Do you think? Still? Carol: I don't know that he really does, but Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: does he want Martin to think he does? Chesla Wechsler: Oof, yeah. I mean he certainly was denigrating of him with respect to, you know, you you you wet yourself when you were doing the create things. He he just really he's just a mean spirited man who's holding on to juvenile grudgery. Carol: Yeah, he's a bully that hasn't grown up, it seems. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: Insecurity, you know. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I think that they could do a lot with those characters, since they Carol: Mm-hmm. Chesla Wechsler: don't you think there's there's a dynamic they can really work with there? Yeah. Carol: yeah, yeah. I just kinda wonder did Glendon really know what happened to Martin as a kid? You know, did he know that story? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Mm-hmm. That he lost his sister. Carol: Yeah. would he have gone to the extent of teasing and bullying that he did had he known what had happened? Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Right. Yeah. Carol: But he he went on to medical school. He's this highly successful doctor and you know, what does Glendon do? I mean, he obviously he's successful and now he's running the that operation for the sea Chesla Wechsler: Right. Carol: urchin, but you know. Chesla Wechsler: I got a feeling that Glendon's the richest guy in town, right? Wasn't he like the the major construction guy and now he's helping the site seems to me like he's he's the wealthy guy in town. Carol: Right. He's got his fingers in several things. Chesla Wechsler: Which could. Yeah. Yeah. How about Mark and Sally? Carol: Mark and Sally. This is this'll be interesting to see how they they move on. just watching him cross that stage and then she finally rips that neck brace off and it's like a lot was said in just that few seconds of her taking that off, like a release and not just Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Carol: release of the neck brace, but release of thinking he is this little boy that still needs his mommy. And Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: so it'll be interesting, like we talked earlier, it's like there's still gonna be a codependency, I think. It's just not gonna be quite as Codependent as it's been. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: less pronounced. Yeah. Do you think Mark grows up some? Do you think he he acts a little less goofy or Carol: Well, I hope they leave him a little goofy, 'cause that's the character, you Chesla Wechsler: yeah. That's him. Carol: That's him. Yeah. and still have a little bit of childlikeness to him, just for fun, you know. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: like with again with that meditation and stuff and how he got so detracted so fast and Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Carol: his spiritual guide and all that stuff. So I hope they keep a little bit of that, but still keep him, growing as an adult. Cause he realized, I'm not married. I don't have kids. And Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Carol: now he's getting that yearning to have that in his life, I think. Chesla Wechsler: And I think there's a level of a level of maturity of you have to accept that you're a grown up now. Right? So like Carol: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: it's not enough to just say, I'm not married, I don't have kids. It's to be married you have to be a responsible spouse. To be a father. You know, to have kids you have to be willing to be a father. so I th y we've seen growth in him just over How many episodes do we have now? Four plus thirteen, seventeen? So Yeah, a lot of growth. Cool. Carol: Yeah. Yeah. Just last year with you were discussing how they were deal he was just dealing with coming two weeks off of the engagement being broken off. So that's a lot to deal with, especially what they were together eight years after she came back and went to school together. So Chesla Wechsler: Yep. Yep. Cool. Anything else that you thought of? Carol: well I really liked George too last Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Carol: night. You know, he was kinda having a I don't know if you could call it a mini midlife crisis of, you know, he wants to expand his dishes, he wants to serve and he's trying to set his feet in the ground and and prove himself and and He just realized that, especially with Louisa when they found out the IVF didn't take and you know, she wanted a lobster roll and that was okay, these are important and we'll get them back on the menu and but I'm still gonna serve whatever, you know, other fancy dish I can come up with. Chesla Wechsler: Hey, the the the tyranny of or the genius of and right? He doesn't have to do one or the other, he can do both. So Carol: Right, yeah. So just the overarching of community in that last night. Just how they were there for each other was was pretty cool. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. A hundred percent. Well I'm so glad we got a chance to chat. This is good. Carol: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: And so we'll put this out as a little bonus e episode and we'll see you next week. Carol: Okay.
