- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome, moms. Welcome to Inside the Moms Club. I'm your host,
- 0:06Speaker 1: Monica Samuels. I'm here with Julie Orkid, one of my
- 0:10Speaker 1: dearest friends.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Hello, Julie.
- 0:13Speaker 3: I mean, it's so good to be with you.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Last week, this week, you know, it's been a lot
- 0:19Speaker 1: of fun, but something happened the other day that's not, well, okay,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you what happened. So I was at
- 0:26Speaker 1: Target checking out at Target. And the high school person
- 0:32Speaker 1: who was checking me out, the cashier, she was lovely.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And so I thought, well, we can kind of connect
- 0:37Speaker 1: here because I was a target cashier. That was my
- 0:40Speaker 1: first job in high school. So I told her, I said,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I was a target cashier too. Only when I was
- 0:47Speaker 1: a cashier, they didn't have those scan things. We had
- 0:50Speaker 1: to actually type every single number in. And then I said, well,
- 0:57Speaker 1: it was a long time ago. Lincoln was president. And
- 1:01Speaker 1: she said, wow. Now, do I look like I was
- 1:08Speaker 1: around during the Civil War? I mean, tell me, do
- 1:11Speaker 1: I look that bad? No, you can be honest. No,
- 1:14Speaker 1: you can't be honest.
- 1:14Speaker 3: We're really good friends, but you look great.
- 1:17Speaker 1: So is our education system suffering that someone would think
- 1:20Speaker 1: that I was alive when Abraham Lincoln was president? I mean,
- 1:24Speaker 1: is it more on her or me? I don't know.
- 1:27Speaker 1: But it did make me start thinking about My youth
- 1:31Speaker 1: and my appearance. Possibly that you're aging.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I feel like I need to get back into it
- 1:38Speaker 1: because I used to be Miss Fitness. I used to
- 1:40Speaker 1: have a trainer twice a day. Twice a day?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I was really into it.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Oh, all right.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I was working out a lot.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:48Speaker 1: And I recently read something that said that after 60,
- 1:53Speaker 1: if you're going to live a nice life as you're
- 1:58Speaker 1: older- A quality life. A quality life.
- 2:01Speaker 2: We talked about this.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You need to be able to get up off the
- 2:04Speaker 1: floor without using your hands at all. People that can
- 2:08Speaker 1: do that are going to have a nice glide path
- 2:12Speaker 1: to their sensory marker, whatever they're going to be.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Well, I mean, can you do that?
- 2:19Speaker 3: No.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So that makes me very concerned.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:23Speaker 1: For sure.
- 2:24Speaker 2: For sure.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Not only.
- 2:25Speaker 1: High school kids mistaking me for, you know, someone from
- 2:29Speaker 1: the 1860s. But I can't even do that. So I'm
- 2:33Speaker 1: going to make it my my goal here today. And
- 2:37Speaker 1: why I'm so excited about our guest today is I'm
- 2:39Speaker 1: going to make it my mission to get there.
- 2:44Speaker 3: In front of all these witnesses.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That's right.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I'm pledging that I am going to do this. And
- 2:50Speaker 1: so that someday on the mom's club, you're going to
- 2:52Speaker 1: see Julie here get off the floor without using her
- 2:56Speaker 1: hands because I'm going to inspire her to do this.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And then I might try to do it myself. Okay.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It's a lot harder than your situation where Julie's going
- 3:04Speaker 3: to do it first, which is.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That's right. Well, we have to do it together. That's
- 3:07Speaker 1: what moms, that's what the mom's club is all about.
- 3:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 3:10Speaker 1: So I'm excited today that we have with us a
- 3:13Speaker 1: devoted wife, mother, mentor, community leader, a lifelong fitness enthusiast,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and certified Pilates instructor. Not just someone who does it,
- 3:23Speaker 1: but is an instructor. She has been married to former
- 3:26Speaker 1: NBA champion John Sally for more than 32 years and
- 3:30Speaker 1: is the proud mother of three children as well as
- 3:32Speaker 1: the surrogate mother to several others. Please welcome Natasha Sally. Natasha,
- 3:37Speaker 1: welcome to the Moms Club.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Hi, how are you? Thank you.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So Natasha, I'm betting that you can get up off
- 3:46Speaker 1: the floor without using your hands. I'm pretty sure.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yes, I can.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Right. Yeah.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So, well, how, well, I'm going to ask you specifically
- 3:53Speaker 1: how to do that. What's your, what's your regimen? Like
- 3:56Speaker 1: what's your secret? I know you've been doing this. You
- 3:59Speaker 1: were a track star. I mean, you've been, you've unlike
- 4:02Speaker 1: me who got into it and then like got really
- 4:05Speaker 1: into it and then just fell off the wagon completely.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You've kept it up your whole life, right? So how,
- 4:11Speaker 1: how did you do this? Share with all the moms
- 4:13Speaker 1: out there because I know they want to know.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Well, you know, you're always running after your kids. So
- 4:18Speaker 2: that's track right there. Trying to keep up with somebody.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And I don't know. I just made it part of
- 4:23Speaker 2: my lifestyle.
- 4:25Speaker 1: That's true. So you commit to like I used to
- 4:30Speaker 1: make sure that when I got up at 5 a.m.
- 4:32Speaker 1: that by 6 I was working. I was exercising somehow.
- 4:35Speaker 1: So is it just making a schedule or.
- 4:39Speaker 2: You schedule yourself in to your day? So I like,
- 4:44Speaker 2: if you can't do anything, you know, you can do
- 4:45Speaker 2: squats while you brush your teeth. You can do calf
- 4:47Speaker 2: raises while you brush your teeth. You know, park farther
- 4:50Speaker 2: in Target parking lot. Just make it an active lifestyle.
- 4:54Speaker 2: You know, you're lifting groceries out of your trunk. Those
- 4:58Speaker 2: are bicep curls. So just make it part of your
- 5:00Speaker 2: everyday routine. You have a baby, you know, you're playing
- 5:03Speaker 2: with the baby, lifting the baby up and down. Again,
- 5:07Speaker 2: running after kids, lugging school bags. just a fit mom.
- 5:14Speaker 3: All of that is working out. I will say that, uh,
- 5:18Speaker 3: how would you describe aging gracefully? Because, you know, Monica
- 5:21Speaker 3: and I are almost empty nesters. So it's a different
- 5:24Speaker 3: stage for each part. I mean, I'm sure you have
- 5:26Speaker 3: people in your classes all the way from, you know,
- 5:29Speaker 3: they're in their late twenties, mid twenties, all the way
- 5:32Speaker 3: up to our age. So, um, what do you tell
- 5:35Speaker 3: people about that, about, you know, continuing to be strong
- 5:39Speaker 3: in a routine?
- 5:41Speaker 2: Um, I like baby steps. You do a little, a little,
- 5:44Speaker 2: a little, and that will help you as you get older.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So as your child is a young, you're going to
- 5:52Speaker 2: elementary school. So you're doing one type of workout. And
- 5:55Speaker 2: then you're in high school and your kid needs you more.
- 5:58Speaker 2: You're driving more. So like I would take my kids
- 6:00Speaker 2: to practice. They're at practice. So I'm walking around. I'm
- 6:03Speaker 2: doing something active. I always tell my moms, do not
- 6:07Speaker 2: eat after the kids. I know you don't want to
- 6:09Speaker 2: throw the food away. Save it for them to eat
- 6:11Speaker 2: it later. Don't eat their leftovers.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good one. That's actually a biggie. Yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 1: that's tricky.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You have to just every day, whatever you do for yourself,
- 6:24Speaker 2: just make it part of your routine. So like I
- 6:27Speaker 2: know I have to stretch every day as I get older.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You know, I'm getting tighter, so I have to stretch
- 6:33Speaker 2: every day. I do Pilates every day. I don't do
- 6:36Speaker 2: like a full workout, but I do something and that
- 6:38Speaker 2: keeps my body moving. I have to eat green vegetables.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Like if I don't eat green vegetables, my body's like, Hey,
- 6:45Speaker 2: so I go to Michigan. It's harder to eat healthy,
- 6:50Speaker 2: but you know, I take snacks. I eat almonds. Just
- 6:53Speaker 2: put it in your lifestyle and those small changes make
- 6:57Speaker 2: big results.
- 6:59Speaker 1: You became a certified Pilates instructor. So do you think
- 7:03Speaker 1: like if, if you could only do one extra, if
- 7:05Speaker 1: you could only do one form of formal exercise and,
- 7:09Speaker 1: Would it be Pilates or strength training? Or is there
- 7:12Speaker 1: one that you think can help move us to that
- 7:15Speaker 1: goal that someday we can all like get up off
- 7:17Speaker 1: the floor without assistance?
- 7:19Speaker 2: You can Pilates eight, eight years old to 80 years old.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I've started doing a little bit of that, you know, weightlifting. Yeah. Well,
- 7:28Speaker 2: we do weight bearing on our Pilates reformer. We, we
- 7:32Speaker 2: can do everything. We do stretching. We do strength training.
- 7:35Speaker 2: It's really, and like I have my pregnant moms, we
- 7:38Speaker 2: do workouts. I have like, you know, my 80 year
- 7:41Speaker 2: old clients, we do workouts. You can have a broken foot.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I've had clients in a boot. So you can still
- 7:47Speaker 2: move your body. I'll have like a bride getting ready.
- 7:51Speaker 2: She's not doing the same workout as my 80 year
- 7:53Speaker 2: old client. You know, it's different things for different parts.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I have an executive, he does golf. So we do,
- 8:01Speaker 2: you know, movements for golf. You know, there's different movements,
- 8:04Speaker 2: you know, we do for our moms, we do a
- 8:06Speaker 2: lot of lifting, a lot of carrying. So there's a
- 8:09Speaker 2: lot of overhead things. It's not all about, you know,
- 8:14Speaker 2: getting the heart. Well, our heart rate gets up. Like
- 8:17Speaker 2: we have jump board and we have, you know, I can,
- 8:20Speaker 2: I mean, I can really kill you or I can
- 8:22Speaker 2: shut you out. So, you know, it depends what your
- 8:24Speaker 2: body needs. And I like to read my clients. So
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know, no, because like I'll have in my mind, OK,
- 8:31Speaker 2: I'm going to work out Susie and Susie, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 2: she's like hardcore wants to do. But, you know, Susie
- 8:36Speaker 2: woke up with a headache and she just wants to stretch.
- 8:38Speaker 2: So I go in and I change it and I
- 8:40Speaker 2: adapt to what you need. So Pilates is one of
- 8:43Speaker 2: those things. For me, it was the only thing that
- 8:46Speaker 2: I found after I had my baby, my first baby
- 8:49Speaker 2: that changed my body. It was like, oh, this is nice.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I like, you know, I like the results. I got
- 8:55Speaker 2: long and lean. And I kept it up and then
- 8:57Speaker 2: it got expensive. So I said, you know, I should
- 9:00Speaker 2: just become certified and then I don't have to pay
- 9:02Speaker 2: for it. So I did.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Oh, that's a great idea.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So do you have mostly private clients, Natasha?
- 9:09Speaker 2: I do. I'm at a point now where it's also Pilates,
- 9:14Speaker 2: I will say, is a great exercise for moms because
- 9:18Speaker 2: when my kids were in school, I could plan my
- 9:20Speaker 2: clients around their drop off and pick up. So like
- 9:25Speaker 2: I would drop one kid off, go do a couple
- 9:28Speaker 2: of clients, have to pick one up, drop her off,
- 9:30Speaker 2: go do another couple of clients. So it worked for
- 9:32Speaker 2: my lifestyle. I right now, though, I have clients and
- 9:37Speaker 2: I go to their homes and we also do Zoom. So, yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You can now do Zoom. Do you ever
- 9:46Speaker 1: have any challenging client where you're thinking to yourself, this
- 9:51Speaker 1: person's like I used to have like. I used to
- 9:54Speaker 1: exercise with somebody, I won't name the person, but I'd
- 9:56Speaker 1: go to the gym with her and she'd get on her,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the treadmill. And I'm pretty sure she said it on
- 10:03Speaker 1: Mosey because she was going so slow that there's no
- 10:07Speaker 1: way she was getting a benefit out of it. And
- 10:09Speaker 1: my husband was one that he would get on a machine.
- 10:11Speaker 1: And now your husband being an NBA superstar, you didn't
- 10:14Speaker 1: have this problem. But his deal was he'd get on
- 10:16Speaker 1: a machine for like two seconds and then he'd always
- 10:18Speaker 1: have to get off. you had a drink of water
- 10:20Speaker 1: or to go do the one. I mean, do you
- 10:23Speaker 1: have some that you're having trouble motivating or how, and
- 10:25Speaker 1: then when you do, how do you motivate them?
- 10:28Speaker 2: Um, I do have a couple of clients that get
- 10:31Speaker 2: distracted and we'll start talking and I can tell when
- 10:36Speaker 2: they're not Pilates is a mind body connection. So when
- 10:40Speaker 2: you're doing it, you really have to be present. So
- 10:43Speaker 2: I'm really good at bringing you back into your goals.
- 10:46Speaker 2: So I'll, reiterate what your goals are for yourself. Like
- 10:49Speaker 2: you want to be more flexible or you want to
- 10:51Speaker 2: be more toned. So I'm really good at bringing them
- 10:54Speaker 2: back to, Hey, you have this thing coming up and
- 10:57Speaker 2: you want to look good for that. So come on,
- 10:59Speaker 2: let's do this. We need to get up and go. Yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Oh, that's good.
- 11:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 1: So she would easily, if she was training me beyond
- 11:07Speaker 1: my little, my little tricks is kind of like, Oh,
- 11:09Speaker 1: can you explain to me a little bit better how
- 11:11Speaker 1: that machine works?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 1: That takes up a little time for you to explain that. Yeah.
- 11:15Speaker 1: You'd get me right back on track, I guess. So yeah, no, that's,
- 11:18Speaker 1: that's good.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Yeah. So like we're, this is how the machine works
- 11:22Speaker 2: as we're doing the exercise. No, there's not stop.
- 11:25Speaker 1: No, not, not Monica. You can take notes or sit
- 11:29Speaker 1: back and watch for a minute.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah. That's not going to happen with Natasha, you know?
- 11:34Speaker 1: I'd probably be really in shape. You know what did
- 11:36Speaker 1: it for me? You mentioned something about people in boots.
- 11:40Speaker 1: I broke my foot and that was kind of when
- 11:42Speaker 1: I had all that training, when I was doing all that,
- 11:43Speaker 1: I was really super fit. And then I twisted my foot.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I literally walked four steps across the floor and my
- 11:50Speaker 1: foot rolled and I got what's called a Jones fracture,
- 11:53Speaker 1: which I understand Kevin Durant had. So, I mean, it's
- 11:56Speaker 1: athletes get it. But I had, I was in a
- 11:59Speaker 1: boot for about a year. I had two surgeries and,
- 12:02Speaker 1: But no one suggested to me, hey, you could still exercise.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I just kind of fell off. That's when I quit
- 12:08Speaker 1: doing it. So now you keep people going. I mean,
- 12:13Speaker 1: it sounds like they could have a broken arm and
- 12:15Speaker 1: they can still do something.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yes, they can. Your glutes are fine with your arm broken. Yeah.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Right. So, okay. So what about someone like me who
- 12:23Speaker 1: then didn't quit for a while? How do you get
- 12:26Speaker 1: back into it? What's the best way to do that?
- 12:30Speaker 2: Baby steps. We slow, like I said, my 80 year
- 12:34Speaker 2: old client is not going to do, you know, what
- 12:36Speaker 2: my 25 year old client's been doing. So we do, again,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I will look at your body, see what your goal,
- 12:41Speaker 2: you know, if you just want to be more active,
- 12:43Speaker 2: you just want to get the blood flowing. You feel
- 12:45Speaker 2: really tight. You want to be able to pick something
- 12:47Speaker 2: up off the floor, you know? So we work on
- 12:50Speaker 2: like flexibility and stuff like that. But again, a little
- 12:53Speaker 2: at a time. And I like to tell my clients,
- 12:56Speaker 2: I'm like the dentist. You know, you can't come in
- 12:59Speaker 2: twice a year for a cleaning and expect beautiful teeth.
- 13:01Speaker 2: You have to floss every day. You have to brush
- 13:03Speaker 2: every day. So you have to do something every day.
- 13:06Speaker 2: So I'll give you some little homework, like, okay. I mean,
- 13:08Speaker 2: nothing crazy, you know, just like, okay, you're going to
- 13:12Speaker 2: roll up out of bed like this. You know, you're
- 13:14Speaker 2: going to do that, you know, little baby, baby, baby,
- 13:18Speaker 2: you know, nothing major, but just to keep you active.
- 13:20Speaker 2: So then the next time you come see me, you're like, oh, okay,
- 13:24Speaker 2: so now I'm getting a little closer to touching my toes. Okay,
- 13:27Speaker 2: I can bend down a little further.
- 13:29Speaker 1: I love your attitude. I think that's absolutely.
- 13:31Speaker 3: You make it sound so easy from working out to
- 13:34Speaker 3: having a really good relationship.
- 13:35Speaker 1: With your husband. Have you written a book? I think
- 13:40Speaker 1: you should. You definitely have some good advice. Yeah. And
- 13:45Speaker 1: a great example. Well, thank you, Natasha, for being with
- 13:49Speaker 1: us today. This has been a Amazing, as we say
- 13:52Speaker 1: here on the Moms Club. So thank you for joining us.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And thank you to our sponsors. Woodlock Resort and Spa
- 13:58Speaker 1: is in the Poconos. It's an amazing place. I can't
- 14:02Speaker 1: wait till we get to go there, Julie.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I'm looking forward to it.
- 14:04Speaker 1: And there's been some talk of us, and this could
- 14:07Speaker 1: be one of the places, of us doing live shows
- 14:10Speaker 1: across the country. And I'm excited about it. And they
- 14:13Speaker 1: are a blast. They are a blast because it's fun
- 14:16Speaker 1: to meet the women out there, all the moms out there.
- 14:18Speaker 1: It is always fun to meet you all over the country.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Be looking for us. We're going to be there. We
- 14:24Speaker 1: can't wait to meet you. And we can't wait to
- 14:26Speaker 1: help you meet other moms. You bring your mom friends.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Someone else brings their mom friends. You've got a whole
- 14:31Speaker 1: new mom friend. Yeah, we're going to do that. Moms
- 14:35Speaker 1: have to stick together. I think one thing we've seen
- 14:37Speaker 1: here is that, you know, we're the core and the
- 14:39Speaker 1: center of I mean, of everything. So let's all band
- 14:45Speaker 1: together and support one another. That is what Natasha was saying. Yes,
- 14:48Speaker 1: that is what it's all about. Well, you can check
- 14:51Speaker 1: us out on social media at Inside the Moms Club.
- 14:55Speaker 1: We're on all the platforms, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram. We also

- 15:10Speaker 3: L'Amazing newsletter that has started coming out on Monday.
- 15:14Speaker 1: We do. We do. It is, it's called L'Amazing Monday.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Sign up. You can be a subscriber. You can go
- 15:20Speaker 1: to our website too and subscribe to our L'Amazing newsletter.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So we have all kinds of cool things happening right now.
- 15:25Speaker 1: You want to be part of the mom's club and
- 15:28Speaker 1: we would love to have you and have us to
- 15:29Speaker 1: have you join us. Well, Julie, this has gone by
- 15:32Speaker 1: way too fast. I know. It always does. And we
- 15:36Speaker 1: have a motto that we can, incorporate into even our exercise,
- 15:41Speaker 1: which is if you don't laugh, sometimes you are going
- 15:44Speaker 1: to cry. You're going to cry. So keep laughing, keep
- 15:48Speaker 1: laughing out there moms. And we'll see you next time
- 15:49Speaker 1: inside the mom's club.
