- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And he answered and said, Lo, I
- 0:05Speaker 1: see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and they have no hurt, and the form of the
- 0:12Speaker 1: fourth is like the Son of God. Daniel 3.25 One
- 0:19Speaker 1: of the greatest joys I have, Heavenly Father, is knowing
- 0:23Speaker 1: that I don't have to try to defend you and
- 0:25Speaker 1: your greatness when others are bent on trying to discredit
- 0:28Speaker 1: your power and holiness. Because of this, when people of
- 0:34Speaker 1: influence try to abuse their power and try to get
- 0:37Speaker 1: me to bow to the idols of their beliefs, I
- 0:40Speaker 1: will stand tall like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. I will
- 0:45Speaker 1: stand tall in the midst of their threats and scare tactics.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Because no matter what they do, I will be unharmed.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Because your arm of protection is all around me. When
- 0:59Speaker 1: the heat of the situation arises in my life and
- 1:02Speaker 1: I feel like I'm in the furnace of adversity, instead
- 1:06Speaker 1: of tears, I'll choose to praise you because I know
- 1:11Speaker 1: there's another in the fire that is protecting me so
- 1:15Speaker 1: that not one thread of my clothing will be singed
- 1:18Speaker 1: by the flames. As I come out of the fiery
- 1:22Speaker 1: trials in life, I thank you that I won't appear
- 1:26Speaker 1: like I just came out of hardship. Because you elevate
- 1:30Speaker 1: my life, no one will get the credit for what
- 1:34Speaker 1: is happening except you. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
- 1:43Speaker 1: for praying with me today. Continue listening for an incredible
- 1:47Speaker 1: Bible story brought to you by BibleInAYear.com.
- 2:00Speaker 2: The King and the Fiery Furnace In our last story,
- 2:05Speaker 2: King Nebuchadnezzar was tormented by dreams. In search of an interpretation,
- 2:10Speaker 2: the king sought out the wise men and magicians of
- 2:13Speaker 2: the time. They had no answers for him, so the
- 2:16Speaker 2: king went out to destroy all the wise men in
- 2:19Speaker 2: the nation. Before he could do this, Daniel gave him
- 2:23Speaker 2: an interpretation. The Lord was faithful to show Daniel and
- 2:27Speaker 2: the king the what was going to take place among
- 2:30Speaker 2: the nations. Daniel, just like Joseph before Pharaoh, was given
- 2:34Speaker 2: governance over the kingdom as a result. Now we look
- 2:38Speaker 2: at another interaction between Nebuchadnezzar as men of God. Shadrach, Meshach,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and Abednego are faced with a choice between bowing to
- 2:46Speaker 2: the king's god or facing certain death in flames, inspired
- 2:51Speaker 2: by the book of Daniel.
- 2:55Speaker 3: This is Jack Graham. Thank you for joining us today
- 2:58Speaker 3: for the next episode of The Bible in a Year.
- 3:02Speaker 3: In our last time together, we saw how God spoke
- 3:04Speaker 3: through Daniel to give Nebuchadnezzar understanding about his dreams. Though
- 3:09Speaker 3: no person in the kingdom could tell the king what
- 3:11Speaker 3: he saw, Daniel glorified God as he showed the king
- 3:15Speaker 3: that God alone could read the hearts and minds of men.
- 3:19Speaker 3: As a result of Daniel's move of faith, Nebuchadnezzar began
- 3:22Speaker 3: to see that there is a God above all others.
- 3:25Speaker 3: He wasn't yet fully bought in, however. And as we'll
- 3:28Speaker 3: learn today, King Nebuchadnezzar still wanted glory and honor for himself.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And as he builds an idol to himself and commands
- 3:36Speaker 3: all to worship him, three young Jewish men are put
- 3:40Speaker 3: to the test. Will they follow the one true God
- 3:43Speaker 3: or obey the king or follow the crowd? And the
- 3:47Speaker 3: big question is this, would God protect them when they
- 3:50Speaker 3: face fiery consequences for their decision? Let's listen now to
- 3:54Speaker 3: today's readings of a great story from God's Word.
- 3:59Speaker 2: The statue shimmered in the summer sun. Its golden frame
- 4:03Speaker 2: reflected the light in every direction for miles. It stood
- 4:07Speaker 2: above every home and building in the nation, looming over
- 4:10Speaker 2: the people like a watchman. It was King Nebuchadnezzar's greatest accomplishment,
- 4:16Speaker 2: a 50-foot golden statue praising his God. In his dream,
- 4:21Speaker 2: only the head was gold, and it represented his kingdom.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Now Nebuchadnezzar erected a statue that was pure gold, a
- 4:28Speaker 2: representation of his kingdom lasting forever. It was idolatry at
- 4:33Speaker 2: its finest. All the governors, counselors, and officials in the
- 4:38Speaker 2: kingdom of Babylon were invited to the palace to stand
- 4:41Speaker 2: before the statue. Its golden rays shone down on the
- 4:45Speaker 2: people below. The king stood below the statue, looking outward
- 4:49Speaker 2: to all his leaders before him. Beside him was a
- 4:52Speaker 2: band of musicians— The horn, the lyre, the pipes, harps,
- 4:57Speaker 2: and bagpipes were all surrounding him. My servants, Nebuchadnezzar shouted,
- 5:03Speaker 2: by my decree, when you hear the music playing, you
- 5:07Speaker 2: shall fall down and worship the image before you. And
- 5:11Speaker 2: the herald proclaimed aloud, You are commanded, O peoples, nations,
- 5:16Speaker 2: and languages, that when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and every kind of music, you are to fall down
- 5:27Speaker 2: and worship the golden image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And whoever does not fall down and worship shall immediately
- 5:35Speaker 2: be cast into a burning, fiery furnace. Therefore, As soon
- 5:41Speaker 2: as all the peoples heard the sound of the horn, pipe, lyre, trigon, harp, bagpipe,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and every kind of music, all the peoples, nations, and
- 5:50Speaker 2: languages fell down and worshipped the golden image that King
- 5:55Speaker 2: Nebuchadnezzar had set up. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were all
- 6:01Speaker 2: in attendance. They looked at each other as the words
- 6:04Speaker 2: of the king poured out to the people. They knew
- 6:06Speaker 2: they could not bow to this idol. It was idolatry
- 6:10Speaker 2: that got their people captive in the first place. Then
- 6:13Speaker 2: they heard the king's voice again, saying, Whoever refuses to
- 6:17Speaker 2: bow shall feel the intensity of my furnace. They shall burn.
- 6:23Speaker 2: The music played, and all in attendance bowed before the statue,
- 6:28Speaker 2: all except Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They stood firm in place,
- 6:33Speaker 2: refusing to pay homage to a false god built out
- 6:37Speaker 2: of pride. The men were brought before the king and questioned.
- 6:41Speaker 2: The king berated them and demanded they bow when the
- 6:43Speaker 2: music was played. Nebuchadnezzar fumed with a jealous rage. He
- 6:48Speaker 2: saw their lack of obedience as a personal attack against him.
- 6:52Speaker 2: You shall bow or you shall burn, the king growled.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No god can save you from my wrath. Shadrach, Meshach,
- 7:01Speaker 2: and Abednego answered calmly to the king. We have no
- 7:05Speaker 2: need to respond, they said. Our God will deliver us
- 7:08Speaker 2: from the furnace. However, even if he does not and
- 7:11Speaker 2: we end up burning, know that we will never serve
- 7:14Speaker 2: your gods. The three men were beaten before the king
- 7:18Speaker 2: and dragged into the boiling room where the furnace raged.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Its heat was tremendous. The flames raged in the iron violently.
- 7:27Speaker 2: The three men of God were bound by ropes and
- 7:29Speaker 2: taken close to the furnace. Even standing next to it
- 7:32Speaker 2: was painful. More wood was added to the furnace. making
- 7:36Speaker 2: its grasp for any person in its reach. Shadrach, Meshach,
- 7:41Speaker 2: and Abednego were tossed in the flames, and the guards
- 7:44Speaker 2: who threw them in were burned and killed in the process.
- 7:48Speaker 2: The fire engulfed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Nebuchadnezzar watched as
- 7:53Speaker 2: the fire danced around the men. His evil smile was
- 7:56Speaker 2: illuminated by the flames. However, something caught his attention. There
- 8:01Speaker 2: were no screams, no cries for help. Nebuchadnezzar peered closely
- 8:06Speaker 2: at the fire. The three men stood there. No, it
- 8:09Speaker 2: seemed as though four men were standing there. Did we
- 8:13Speaker 2: not throw three men into the fire? Nebuchadnezzar asked his men.
- 8:17Speaker 2: We did, sir, the men replied. But Nebuchadnezzar clearly saw
- 8:22Speaker 2: the shadows of four men standing in the furnace. He
- 8:25Speaker 2: saw them walking and speaking amongst one another. His eyes
- 8:29Speaker 2: widened as he looked at the fourth man standing among them.
- 8:32Speaker 2: He was glorious and unhurt by the fire. He stood
- 8:36Speaker 2: over the three men as a protector. His appearance was
- 8:39Speaker 2: like a son of the gods. Nebuchadnezzar began to well
- 8:43Speaker 2: up with fear. His usually confident demeanor was replaced with apprehension. Shadrach, Meshach,
- 8:50Speaker 2: and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out
- 8:54Speaker 2: of that furnace if you are able. The three men
- 8:57Speaker 2: did as they were asked. Their bodies, hair, and clothes
- 9:00Speaker 2: were completely unburned. All men in attendance shuddered in awe
- 9:05Speaker 2: and fear. The king stood before them, ashamed and afraid.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Blessed be your God, he shouted. I once told you
- 9:13Speaker 2: no God could save you from me. I was wrong.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Your God has delivered you. The three men remained silent
- 9:21Speaker 2: in response, allowing the king to process what he had
- 9:23Speaker 2: just witnessed. King Nebuchadnezzar turned back to his men and said,
- 9:28Speaker 2: Whoever speaks out against their God shall be torn limb
- 9:31Speaker 2: from limb. there is clearly no other God more mighty
- 9:36Speaker 2: than he.
- 9:41Speaker 3: In God's word today, Nebuchadnezzar seems to have forgotten his
- 9:44Speaker 3: adoration of Daniel's God. His concern is now much more
- 9:48Speaker 3: self-centered and self-focused, full of pride. The king had a
- 9:53Speaker 3: 50-foot statue of gold built, an image of himself to
- 9:57Speaker 3: represent a kingdom he believed would last forever. This was
- 10:01Speaker 3: quite questionable, of course, given that he has heard Daniel's
- 10:05Speaker 3: interpretation of his dream, which was a clear word from
- 10:08Speaker 3: God that Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom, though it was strong and impressive,
- 10:12Speaker 3: would one day end. Only God's kingdom will endure forever.
- 10:17Speaker 3: But the sinful heart is deceitful above all things, and
- 10:20Speaker 3: the Bible says desperately wicked. And Nebuchadnezzar was certainly deceiving himself.
- 10:26Speaker 3: He was also deceiving the people, for he issued a
- 10:29Speaker 3: decree that when the music began to play, everyone was
- 10:34Speaker 3: to bow down to the idol of the king. They
- 10:36Speaker 3: were to worship Nebuchadnezzar as God. This was not uncommon
- 10:41Speaker 3: for the times. Rulers often were considered gods by the people.
- 10:46Speaker 3: But for the Jews, This was, of course, a clear
- 10:49Speaker 3: violation of God's law. And there were three men in
- 10:53Speaker 3: attendance for this ceremony of self-indulgence that were not about
- 10:57Speaker 3: to disobey their God. Their names? Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
- 11:04Speaker 3: These were Daniel's friends and assistants. They were faithful Jews who,
- 11:08Speaker 3: along with Daniel, had refused to defile themselves with the
- 11:11Speaker 3: king's food. But this time the story is much different.
- 11:15Speaker 3: The king wanted all to pay homage to him, to
- 11:18Speaker 3: worship him, and bow down before him, and anyone refusing
- 11:22Speaker 3: would be thrown to their death in a fiery furnace. Death,
- 11:26Speaker 3: of course, would be certain. The king's astrologers, men who
- 11:30Speaker 3: did not fear the Lord and wanting nothing more than
- 11:33Speaker 3: to see these foreign men wiped out, went to the
- 11:35Speaker 3: king and informed him of their disobedience in refusing to
- 11:39Speaker 3: bow down. They wanted judgment and punishment upon these three
- 11:43Speaker 3: young men. Nebuchadnezzar was enraged. He would not stand for
- 11:48Speaker 3: this disrespect and disobedience. So he brought them before him
- 11:52Speaker 3: to give the men another chance, but they were unmoved.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Rather than make excuses or escape, they stood their ground, saying,
- 12:01Speaker 3: We don't need to justify ourselves to you. This isn't
- 12:05Speaker 3: what the king wanted to hear. He would have thought,
- 12:09Speaker 3: Of course you need to justify yourself. I'm a god-king.
- 12:12Speaker 3: so he made it clear to them that if they
- 12:14Speaker 3: didn't obey, it would be the furnace for them, and
- 12:18Speaker 3: no God could save them. Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego stood their ground.
- 12:24Speaker 3: God had rescued his people from much worse, and he
- 12:27Speaker 3: could rescue them. I love what the Bible says in
- 12:31Speaker 3: Daniel 3.18. When the men said that our God is
- 12:35Speaker 3: able to deliver us, they then went on to say,
- 12:38Speaker 3: but even if he does not, We want you to know,
- 12:42Speaker 3: Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or
- 12:45Speaker 3: worship the image of gold you have set up. Our
- 12:49Speaker 3: God is a God of deliverance. He saves us and
- 12:53Speaker 3: rescues us. But sometimes God does not intervene, and we
- 12:58Speaker 3: need to say what these young men said that day
- 13:00Speaker 3: when they were threatened. But if not, those are the
- 13:04Speaker 3: words which describe our faith in the face of unthinkable circumstances.
- 13:09Speaker 3: God will deliver us. We believe that. But if not,
- 13:13Speaker 3: even if we die, we still will not disobey God.
- 13:16Speaker 3: We will still follow him. Our calling is to trust
- 13:20Speaker 3: God and to serve no other God and to bow
- 13:23Speaker 3: to nothing but God himself. The king can't believe his ears,
- 13:28Speaker 3: so he literally turns up the heat to the point
- 13:30Speaker 3: that it killed the guards who threw the three bound
- 13:33Speaker 3: men inside. But as the king and his men waited
- 13:36Speaker 3: to hear the tortured yells of dying men, They instead
- 13:40Speaker 3: saw four men, rather than three, standing and talking just
- 13:44Speaker 3: like there were no flames to be felt. The fourth
- 13:47Speaker 3: person in the fire had the appearance of the Son
- 13:50Speaker 3: of God. This is the pre-incarnate Christ. There is no
- 13:54Speaker 3: doubt God sent himself as the protector and rescuer into
- 13:58Speaker 3: the fire to save his loyal servants. Nebuchadnezzar was left
- 14:03Speaker 3: with no choice but to let the men out. And
- 14:05Speaker 3: not a hair on their heads or bodies were singed.
- 14:08Speaker 3: The God of the Hebrews had once more shown his awesome,
- 14:11Speaker 3: mighty power, and the king confessed again that there was
- 14:14Speaker 3: no God above the Lord. When God's people stand firm
- 14:18Speaker 3: for him and faithful to him, the world has no
- 14:21Speaker 3: choice but to take notice. Dear God, thank you for
- 14:25Speaker 3: the faith and the faithfulness of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
- 14:30Speaker 3: May we be like these young men, that we will
- 14:32Speaker 3: not bend, we will not bow, and we trust you
- 14:36Speaker 3: that we will not burn. We know that our faith
- 14:39Speaker 3: and our trust rescues us from every danger. But if not,
- 14:43Speaker 3: we will be in your presence forever. In Jesus' name, amen.
