- 0:24Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Let's turn to Psalm 32. Psalm 32 will be tonight's
- 0:36study. And the title I have for our
- 0:40message is the blessing of forgiveness.
- 0:44The blessing of forgiveness. You know, you and I, we, we live
- 0:48in a fallen world and in this world, we try to live for Jesus
- 0:55every single day, doing our very best to abide in him, to live
- 1:00for him, to bring him glory. But along the way, we are faced
- 1:04with opposition. And that opposition are the
- 1:07desires in our hearts that want to be contrary to what God wants
- 1:13to do in our life. And when we act upon those
- 1:17desires, it becomes sin. And there is just this battle
- 1:22that's constantly happening in our lives.
- 1:26The Bible tells us that sin entered the world through Adam,
- 1:29and thus it's passed on to all of us when we come into the
- 1:32world. And Paul tells us concerning
- 1:36sin, that there is none righteous, no, not one.
- 1:39There's none that seeks after God.
- 1:42There's none that does good, no, not one.
- 1:47There's No Fear of God before their eyes.
- 1:50Sin is a problem for us church. It's a problem for us as
- 1:56believers. It's detrimental to our
- 1:58relationship with Jesus. So tonight we're going to learn
- 2:03about the blessing of forgiveness that we see here in
- 2:06Psalm 32, the prescription to cleanse us from all
- 2:13unrighteousness, and the process in which we stay in fellowship
- 2:19with God because that's so important.
- 2:22It's known Psalm 32. It's known as one of the seven
- 2:25penitential psalms. These psalms are traditionally
- 2:29recognized for their expressions of sorrow for sin, repentance,
- 2:35and please for God's mercy and forgiveness.
- 2:39The most famous of these penitential psalms is Psalm 51,
- 2:44often linked to David's repentance after his sin with
- 2:49Bathsheba. Psalm 32 has been known to
- 2:53follow Psalm 51 as David expresses that blessing of
- 2:58forgiveness. And if you remember that story
- 3:01in Second Samuel Chapter 11, where King David, he had stayed
- 3:06back from going into battle, and he sends Joab and his servants
- 3:12to go fight in his place. And one evening he arose and he
- 3:18was on his rooftop. And as he was up there that
- 3:23evening, he noticed on another roof Bathsheba was bathing.
- 3:29And the Bible says that she was beautiful to behold.
- 3:34And because he saw Bathsheba, he told his servants to go get her
- 3:40and bring her to his house. And we know the story.
- 3:45He ends up being with Bathsheba. She becomes pregnant and now we
- 3:50have a problem. David's in a a pickle.
- 3:52Now what do I do? And so David trying to cover his
- 3:57sin, he orders Joab to have Uriah, who is married to
- 4:04Bathsheba when they're in battle, when it's at the the
- 4:09strongest part, the the hottest part of the battle, to pull back
- 4:14the army so that Uriah would be killed.
- 4:18And and so this is exactly what happens.
- 4:23And David feels, hey, I got away with my sin.
- 4:28I was able to cover it. Now I'm going to take Bathsheba
- 4:31as my wife and feel like I'm doing the honor honorable thing.
- 4:38But God knew and God knows, you know, we believe in a God that
- 4:43that sees everything. He's all knowing.
- 4:47He's everywhere. He's a God that can even see
- 4:51when it's dark. The Bible says that it's like
- 4:53noontime to him. Everything is naked and open
- 4:58before the Lord. David thought he was hiding his
- 5:03sin, but God knew, and God was about ready to bust him.
- 5:07And he sends Nathan the prophet. He sends him to King David and
- 5:13Nathan the prophet goes to King David and he says that there
- 5:16were two men in the city, one rich and 1 poor.
- 5:19The rich man had exceedingly many flocks and herds.
- 5:22The poor man had nothing except 1 little lamb, and they treated
- 5:28it like it was one of their family members.
- 5:31The poor man loved that little lamb, and a traveller came to
- 5:35the rich man's house. But the rich man refused to take
- 5:38from his flock, but instead took from the poor man his only lamb,
- 5:45killed it, and prepared it for the traveller.
- 5:49David's anger was greatly aroused against the rich man,
- 5:53and said to Nathan, As the Lord lives, the man who has done this
- 5:57shall surely die. And Nathan said to David, You
- 6:03are that man. Thus says the Lord, I anointed
- 6:08you king, delivered you from Saul, gave you your master's
- 6:12house and wives, why have you despised the commandment of the
- 6:16Lord? And David said to Nathan, I have
- 6:20sinned against the Lord. Nathan said to David, The Lord
- 6:25has put away your sin. Sin.
- 6:30It's sustained the mark of transgression and the charge of
- 6:34iniquity in our lives. It's a problem that needs to be
- 6:38addressed on a regular basis. Jesus knew this.
- 6:42When the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, can you teach us
- 6:45how to pray? Jesus said, yeah, I'm going to
- 6:48teach you. I want you to pray in this
- 6:49manner. And as he was teaching them the
- 6:51prayer, he included forgive us our sins.
- 6:57He taught the disciples that they needed to pray to the
- 7:00Father to ask for forgiveness. That's how important forgiveness
- 7:06is in our lives. It's important for our spiritual
- 7:08health, as breathing is to our bodies, to be clean and in right
- 7:13standing before our God. When we do this, we become like
- 7:20those mentioned in Romans 1. Excuse me.
- 7:24If we do not do this, if we don't ask for forgiveness, if we
- 7:28try to hide it like David, we become like those in Romans, one
- 7:31who suppress the truth. They hear it, they know the
- 7:35truth, God's Word speaks to them, but they just suppress it.
- 7:38I don't want to listen to it. I don't want to hear it.
- 7:42And the Bible says that their hearts become darkened.
- 7:46As we turn to Psalm 32 tonight, we're going to turn to it for a
- 7:50little help. And David's going to teach us
- 7:54something tonight as we read it together.
- 7:59It starts off by being called A contemplation, but it better
- 8:04translated instruction. And David's going to instruct
- 8:08us. He's going to teach us that
- 8:10blessing of forgiveness. And so if you're taking notes,
- 8:13I'm going to share with you 7 things, 7 takeaways from this
- 8:17section of scripture that will help us in our walk with the
- 8:21Lord that David is trying to encourage us.
- 8:24And I'm just going to share with them the seven points #1 the
- 8:29state of joy from forgiveness, the state of joy from
- 8:34forgiveness. And that's in verses one and
- 8:37two. Number two is the physical
- 8:40consequence of unconfessed sin. The physical consequence of
- 8:47unconfessed sin. Verses 3 and 4 #3 the process by
- 8:53which we are forgiven, the process by which we are
- 8:59forgiven. Verses 6:00 and 7:00 #5 the
- 9:04promise of the Father in forgiveness.
- 9:09The promise of the Father in forgiveness.
- 9:14And that's verse 8, 6, the warning of a stubborn heart, the
- 9:22warning of a stubborn heart. And that's verses 9 and 10.
- 9:28And the last point is the rejoicing of an upright heart.
- 9:33The rejoicing of an upright heart.
- 9:36Verse 11. So let's begin by reading Psalm
- 9:4032 together. And we're going to read verses
- 9:43one through 11 together. Verse one.
- 9:47Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose
- 9:51sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the
- 9:55Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no
- 9:59deceit. When I kept silent, my bones
- 10:04grew old through my groaning all the day long, for day and night
- 10:08your hand was heavy upon me. My vitality was turned into the
- 10:12drought of summer. I acknowledge my sin to you, and
- 10:16my iniquity I have not hidden. I said.
- 10:19I will confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the
- 10:24iniquity of my sin. For this cause everyone who is
- 10:28godly shall pray to you in a time when you may be found
- 10:33surely in a flood of great waters.
- 10:34They shall not come near him. You are my hiding place.
- 10:39You shall preserve me from trouble.
- 10:42You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
- 10:47I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.
- 10:51I will guide you with my eye. Do not be like the horse, or
- 10:55like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be
- 10:59harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near
- 11:03you. Many sorrows shall be to the
- 11:05wicked, but he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him.
- 11:11Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice you righteous, and shout for joy
- 11:16all you upright in heart. To that we say Amen.
- 11:21So the word blessed, just to start off here, the word blessed
- 11:24at the very beginning, the word describes a state of joy or
- 11:28happiness. It's a state of joy.
- 11:30It's not just an emotion, it's just a deep seated confidence
- 11:37that brings about that joy, that brings about that happiness.
- 11:40It's different than just an emotion.
- 11:44It's one that bestows favor upon the one that's receiving that
- 11:50grace, His grace to you and me. It's like standing on the beach
- 11:58of an ocean. If you ever seen an ocean and
- 12:01just the magnitude of it, and then you would just see wave
- 12:04upon wave upon wave. That's what God's grace is for
- 12:09US, church, wave upon wave. This is the kind of love that
- 12:15God has for us, and this is the kind of grace that King David
- 12:21opens up this lesson to talk about.
- 12:25And who is the one that experiences this kind of grace,
- 12:28this kind of joy? What we see here in the section
- 12:34of scription, the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose
- 12:38sin is covered, blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not
- 12:43impute iniquity. So we're going to take a moment.
- 12:47We're going to break down these 3 words here, these three words
- 12:51of offense. Transgression is willful
- 12:54rebellion against God and his commands, having a rebellious
- 13:00heart. I remember when I was a kid, I
- 13:02was probably, I don't know, 5 or 6.
- 13:05And we were in downtown LA, very busy.
- 13:08It's like being here in downtown Denver, lots of cars and lots of
- 13:11hustle, lots of bustle going on. And I was walking with my mom
- 13:15and we were at a a signal. And I remember holding her hand,
- 13:22but the light turned green and I pulled my hand away from her
- 13:26because I wanted to do it on my own.
- 13:28I wanted to show that I can walk this street on my own.
- 13:33And my mom looked at me like, are you crazy?
- 13:36What is wrong with you? Like you, I'm just going to take
- 13:41care of you right here in front of everybody.
- 13:43And I stiffened up myself and I put my hands to my side in
- 13:52rebellion, total rebellion. She crossed the street and I let
- 13:58her go a little bit of a distance and I started to walk
- 14:00right behind her. See, I can do this.
- 14:03I got this. And I crossed to the other side
- 14:06of the street, and before I even stepped on the sidewalk, she let
- 14:10me have it. She just took care of business
- 14:16and, and the reason why was because she was trying to
- 14:19protect me from the cars. Isn't it interesting that when
- 14:23the kids are little, they totally hang onto your hand when
- 14:27they're really, really little? But then they get to a certain
- 14:29point and we get to a certain point.
- 14:31As we're growing, we start pulling our hands away.
- 14:34I got this. I want to do it on my own.
- 14:37And we would reach down to try to take the hand.
- 14:39And you just feel that fight kind of happening, that
- 14:42rebellious heart. This is what transgression is.
- 14:49It's just rebelling against what the standard is, what the law
- 14:53specifically says when we're thinking about our relationship
- 14:56with God. Many of us have experienced this
- 15:02in our lives, this rebellious heart, when we're we know we
- 15:06shouldn't be doing this, but we're going to go ahead and
- 15:08we're just going to push the envelope.
- 15:09We're going to do it anyway. That's what's called
- 15:11transgression. Sin, on the other hand, is
- 15:14missing the mark. Sin is something that you can do
- 15:17intentionally or unintentional. The word itself is used to
- 15:23describe when an Archer is shooting at his target and
- 15:27misses the target off by a little bit.
- 15:29It's just called sinning. It was just a term to be used,
- 15:33but the idea is there's that standard and you're trying to
- 15:36hit it, but you miss it. That's something that you and I
- 15:40do a lot, sometimes intentionally and sometimes
- 15:43unintentionally. Paul speaks about this in Romans
- 15:47Chapter 7, verses 18 and 19, where he's saying I want to do
- 15:51the right thing. I have the desire to do the
- 15:54right thing, but instead I end up doing the wrong thing.
- 15:58And there's this battle that's going on inside me and I, I
- 16:00don't understand it. Iniquity.
- 16:04Iniquity is guilty and moral conduct in truth and in life,
- 16:12and an intent against God's law. It's an offense to God's
- 16:16holiness and is punishable. When these three exist in our
- 16:23lives, it's only fitting for a holy and a just God to pronounce
- 16:29a guilty charge upon us. We get what we deserve, but when
- 16:35God Forgives, there's a change that happens in US when we
- 16:42confess our sin and he forgives that transgression, when he
- 16:46forgives that sin, when iniquity is in charge to us.
- 16:55Pastor Chuck would say and, and, and define this, this word.
- 17:00Oh, how happy we're just, it's just, it's just joyful in our
- 17:04hearts that we've been forgiven. David goes on to say blessed is
- 17:08the one in whose spirit there is no deceit.
- 17:13Blessed is the one who's an open book.
- 17:17Here's what he's basically saying.
- 17:18He's sincere. The things that he's saying, he
- 17:22is being genuine before the Lord, finally coming clean
- 17:25before God, choosing to walk in the light as he is in the light.
- 17:31The Bible tells us that darkness again, it's something that we
- 17:35walk in when we're in sin, when we're in transgression, but God
- 17:38wants to walk in his life and that changes everything for us
- 17:44church, when we're no longer trying to hide our sin, when
- 17:48we're no longer trying to to put on a a masquerade, trying to be
- 17:53something. But inside we all know
- 17:57personally that we've sinned, that we have sinned against God.
- 18:06So it's important we just come clean before God.
- 18:10I used to lead a AA double life as well, trying to convince God
- 18:16that I loved him to be one person.
- 18:19And then inside in my heart, I was like dead man's bones.
- 18:25It was, it wasn't real, it was fake.
- 18:29Until one day somebody told me, one of the the leaders at
- 18:33church, he told me you're not fooling anybody about your sin.
- 18:40He didn't know anything that I was doing.
- 18:42But the way he said it, as if God was speaking to my heart.
- 18:47And God used this man to speak to me and say you're not fooling
- 18:51anybody. I know what's in your heart.
- 18:54I know what you've been doing. So I confess my sin.
- 19:03He forgave me and it was so freeing, folks.
- 19:06It was so free and it was just like a, a ton of bricks that
- 19:09just came off my shoulders. He forgave me.
- 19:13It's important that we practice sincerity before the Lord.
- 19:17Just be honest with him. Lord, I struggle with this.
- 19:21I, I deal with this in my life. God already knows.
- 19:25He just wants to hear it from you.
- 19:28He wants you to admit it. He wants you to come clean and
- 19:31be sincere in your prayer. The second point I'd like to
- 19:35share with you is the physical consequences of unconfessed sin.
- 19:42And in the psalmist says, the psalmist writes, when I kept
- 19:45silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day
- 19:48long for day and night your hand was heavy upon me.
- 19:52My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.
- 19:57David now gives a vivid description to us of when he
- 20:01kept silent. It can manifest in our body
- 20:08through a range of psychosomatic and stress related ailments.
- 20:15The mind and body are deeply connected.
- 20:17Church unconfessed sin is like a snowball effect in our lives.
- 20:22It compounds. And ultimately causes anxiety,
- 20:27depression, physical ailments like fatigue, digestive issues,
- 20:32headaches and migraines, sleep disorders.
- 20:35All of this stuff affects us. David's explaining this when he
- 20:39says my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long.
- 20:43My vitality was turned into the drought of summer.
- 20:47All of this because of the unnecessary burden of sin.
- 20:53David also recognized, now, looking back, that God's hand
- 20:59was also heavy upon him, adding just the right amount of
- 21:04pressure to cause him to surrender.
- 21:08And before I became a Christian, God's hand was heavy upon my
- 21:11life. He used all that negative and
- 21:16destructive choices that I had made in my life to cause me to
- 21:20look up to seek Him. Failed relationships, poor
- 21:25choices, sin that would not go away but just compounded.
- 21:31The Bible says that it's His kindness that leads us to
- 21:36repentance, but sometimes that kindness is in the form of a
- 21:41heavy hand upon our life because He loves us and He doesn't want
- 21:46us to continue on so that we become disconnected from Him.
- 21:51He wants to forgive you. He wants to forgive me.
- 21:54He wants to free us from that burden, to free us from every
- 22:01weight and every sin that easily ensnares us.
- 22:06The question I have for you tonight, as a few I might pose
- 22:10to you, is, will you let Him do that tonight?
- 22:13Will you let Him free you of that sin and that weight #3 the
- 22:20process by which we are forgiven?
- 22:23The process. David says, I acknowledge my sin
- 22:27to you and my iniquity I have not hidden.
- 22:32David has now come to this place of surrender.
- 22:34He acknowledged the sin and confessed his iniquity.
- 22:37True confession of sin is not just with the lips, Church.
- 22:42There must be a broken heart and a surrendered will.
- 22:45When we confess our sins, we acknowledge, well, God is
- 22:49already determined to be sin. Psalm 51 gives us some insight
- 22:55into David's confession. I'd like for us to turn there so
- 22:59that we can read a little bit of what that looks like.
- 23:02So turn with me to Psalm 51. Psalm 51.
- 23:06We're just going to read a few verses, verses one through 4 and
- 23:09verse 7, Psalm 51. Here David writes, Have mercy
- 23:17upon me, O God, according to your loving kindness, according
- 23:21to the multitude of your tender mercies.
- 23:23Blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,
- 23:28and cleanse me from my sin, for I acknowledge my transgressions,
- 23:34and my sin is always before me and against You.
- 23:39You only have I sinned and done this evil in your sight, that
- 23:44you may be found just when you speak, and blameless when you
- 23:49judge. Verse 7 Purge me with hyssop,
- 23:53and I shall be clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter
- 23:56than snow. This is David pouring out his
- 24:02heart broken before the Lord. He said I will confess my
- 24:11transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the iniquity of my
- 24:16sin. So I'd like to just focus on
- 24:19this part really quickly here in Psalm 32 when he says I will
- 24:25confess my transgressions to the Lord, and you forgave the
- 24:29iniquity of my sin. The idea here in Hebrew is that
- 24:34David, even before he finished with that confession, God had
- 24:39already forgiven him. And it speaks to us of how
- 24:43quickly God wants to forgive us of our sins.
- 24:46He's ready, He's willing. He just wants to hear our hearts
- 24:51when we confess our sin. So immediately He can wash us,
- 24:55immediately He can cleanse us. How quickly God is ready to
- 25:01forgive us our sins if we only humble our hearts and run to the
- 25:06Father #4 the security we experience in forgiveness.
- 25:13The security we experience in forgiveness.
- 25:17David goes on to say. For this cause everyone who is
- 25:20godly shall pray to you in a time when you may be found
- 25:24surely in a flood of great waters.
- 25:26They shall not come near him. You are my hiding place.
- 25:31You shall preserve me from trouble.
- 25:34You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
- 25:42David now expresses the blessing of security we have in
- 25:45forgiveness. We have access to the Father,
- 25:48protection from overwhelming circumstances, a place of
- 25:52refuge, preservation, and a deliverance that produces a song
- 25:57in our heart. Psalm 3119 declares you are my
- 26:02refuge and fortress. Psalm one 19114 says You are my
- 26:08hiding place and my shield. When we're forgiven and in right
- 26:14standing with the Lord as a child of God, we experience this
- 26:18overwhelming sense of His presence in our lives, that
- 26:22blessing of having a consciousness of God in our
- 26:26minds. This makes way for confidence,
- 26:31for courage and strength to develop as we place our trust in
- 26:35Him. Paul would write to the Romans.
- 26:38What can separate us from the love of Christ?
- 26:43Shall tribulation, distress, or persecution, or famine, or
- 26:47nakedness, or peril, or sword? In all these things we are more
- 26:52than conquerors through Him who loved us.
- 26:55For I'm persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
- 27:00principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to
- 27:04come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created things, shall
- 27:09be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ
- 27:14Jesus our Lord. And again to that I say, Amen.
- 27:19What a wonderful promise. I'd like to point out two more
- 27:23things before we move on. David says for this cause or for
- 27:27this reason, everyone who is godly shall pray.
- 27:32As we recap on all those benefits thus far in this Psalm,
- 27:36it's important not to miss out on the exhortation to be men and
- 27:39women of prayer routinely praying, making confession a
- 27:45part of our prayer life. Like I mentioned earlier when
- 27:49Jesus said when you pray, make sure you include forgive us our
- 27:56trespasses. We need to be continually
- 27:59cleansed from our sin church. There's a lot of filth in this
- 28:03world and it tends to stick. And if not treated quickly
- 28:09through confession and the cleansing forgiveness of God, we
- 28:14place ourselves right back in the mud that he pulled us out
- 28:18of. John also spoke of this to the
- 28:20early church believers and 1st John 19.
- 28:23He says if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to
- 28:27forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
- 28:30unrighteousness. Early on, I put this verse to
- 28:36memorization. As a new believer, I knew I
- 28:40needed this verse in my life to run to.
- 28:45I encourage you to memorize this verse as well.
- 28:48First John 19 So when we feel like something's amiss or
- 28:55there's a disconnect with the Lord, or maybe you find yourself
- 28:59going down a road that you know you shouldn't be going down.
- 29:05Maybe you're short tempered, easily provoked, maybe you're
- 29:11hyper critical and judging someone.
- 29:16All of these are things that I used to deal with and deal with
- 29:21on a regular basis. If I don't take them to the
- 29:25cross, if I don't ask the Lord to fill me with the Spirit, I
- 29:29find that the old man wants to run back to these these sinful
- 29:34desires, these sinful activities.
- 29:39What about you? What's going on in your life?
- 29:44What is it that you see that just God has done a work and is
- 29:48he's blessed you and he's freed you.
- 29:50But then there's just these couple areas that you just don't
- 29:53want to give up and you find yourself easily going right back
- 29:57to you. You know the Lord doesn't like
- 29:59it. You know the Lord doesn't take
- 30:01pleasure in seeing this in your life, but you still allow it.
- 30:09Return to me the joy of your salvation.
- 30:12David would pray back in Psalm 51.
- 30:15Created me in that clean heart and renew a right spirit within
- 30:19me. Prayer is the agent by which we
- 30:22connect with the God who created us and loves us.
- 30:26Prayer keeps our hearts in a place of humility and dependence
- 30:31and not on ourselves. Prayer opens up the floodgates
- 30:34of grace and mercy as we confess our sins.
- 30:39The psalmist goes on to say, you shall surround me with songs of
- 30:43deliverance. Do you have a song of
- 30:45deliverance? Has God-given you a song of
- 30:48deliverance? Maybe a playlist of songs to
- 30:52deliver you, to deliver your heart, to deliver your mind?
- 30:55I do. I create them all the time on my
- 30:57Apple Music. And I choose those songs and I
- 31:01listen to them on the way to work.
- 31:03I listen to them on the way home.
- 31:05I listen to them when I'm going about and I just want to create
- 31:09this environment for my mind to just run to, to have songs of
- 31:14deliverance from the attacks of the enemy, even from my own
- 31:18tendencies to want to run to these desires that just don't
- 31:22line up with the Lord, to keep my mind fixed on him and have
- 31:25that consciousness of God in my life at all times.
- 31:30I think of the song Egypt. It's fairly recent song over the
- 31:34past couple years and it's a song that I think about the
- 31:39words, 'cause I lead worship, I'm going to sing to you if you
- 31:42guys are alright with that. I won't forget the wonder of how
- 31:47you brought Deliverance, the exodus of my heart, 'cause you
- 31:54found me, you freed me. Hail back the waters from my
- 32:00release. Oh, y'all way.
- 32:05You're the God who fights for me.
- 32:09Lord of every victory. Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
- 32:18You have torn apart the sea. You have led me through the
- 32:24deep. Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
- 32:31That's the God that we serve. He's done that work.
- 32:36He separates that sea so we can walk through and gives us that
- 32:40victory, a song of deliverance. I need that.
- 32:43I work at Costco, folks, and there's a lot of challenges
- 32:49working there in retail. As you can imagine.
- 32:53I've been working at Costco for over 37 years.
- 32:56From the time I turn 18, I started working there and God
- 33:00has helped me throughout my life to be able to deal with the
- 33:05pressures and the challenges. There's a lot of people that
- 33:08come in frustrated and then I become that point person because
- 33:14I represent Costco and unless I have Songs of Deliverance, it's
- 33:18going to be really easy for me to get in the flesh.
- 33:21Just as like I'm sure you with your work as well.
- 33:25When something is disappointing, when some attack comes your way,
- 33:29we need Songs of Deliverance. The Bible says that He will keep
- 33:35you in perfect peace whose mind is fixed on him or is stayed on
- 33:41the Lord. And that's what we use these
- 33:43songs of deliverance for. God gives us these songs.
- 33:46They become the soundtrack of our lives.
- 33:49And I encourage you folks, do it.
- 33:52Take time to get away from the secular music and allow God to
- 33:58encourage you with songs of deliverance and you'll begin to
- 34:02see how your relationship begins to grow leaps and bounds because
- 34:06you're making way for him to do that work.
- 34:11Paul writing to the Ephesians, he said be filled with the
- 34:14Spirit speaking to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual
- 34:18songs, making melody in your heart to the Lord.
- 34:22We need these songs in our heart church to deliver us to remain
- 34:27in Jesus. And so again I say to you, do
- 34:31you have a song playing throughout the day in your mind?
- 34:34A song to run to when the pressures of this world are
- 34:37pressing in point #5 the promise of the Father and forgiveness.
- 34:48The promise of the Father and forgiveness.
- 34:51David goes on to say, I will instruct you and teach you in
- 34:54the way you should go. I will guide you with my eye.
- 34:58Actually reverse that. It's interesting that in this
- 35:02part right here, David is writing this down, but God jumps
- 35:06in to the scene and he begins to speak.
- 35:10It's God who's speaking here in Psalm 32 at this point when he
- 35:14says I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should
- 35:18go. I will guide you with my eye.
- 35:22This change happens. It's no longer David.
- 35:26God says, I will instruct you, this can be translated.
- 35:29I will make you understand. And then he says I will teach
- 35:32you in the way or how to keep the way, and I will guide you
- 35:37with my eye. That incessant watchfulness of a
- 35:43Father Spurgeon would write this.
- 35:46This is so good. We are pardoned not to live
- 35:49after our own lusts, but to be educated in holiness and trained
- 35:55for perfection. This is where God is speaking
- 35:59directly to us tonight, folks, to let Him instruct us, to teach
- 36:06us in the way we should go, that He might guide us.
- 36:11Spurgeon would go on to say It's kind of like the master and he's
- 36:16got some servants and it only takes just a nod or a look or a
- 36:22glance to communicate that message to the servant.
- 36:27And the servant immediately responds.
- 36:30That's the kind of love, that's the kind of relationship that
- 36:33God wants to have with us. It only comes through confession
- 36:40of sin and forgiveness to have that relationship.
- 36:47We are pardoned again, not to live after our lust, but to be
- 36:52educated in holiness so important our minds no longer
- 36:57being conformed to this world, but being transformed through
- 37:01regeneration. This leads us to the 6th point.
- 37:06The 6th point, the warning of a stubborn heart.
- 37:10Do not be like the horse or like the mule, David says, Which have
- 37:16no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle,
- 37:20else they will not come near you.
- 37:22The horse and the mule have no understanding, no understanding.
- 37:26They have to be moved and guided by that bit and bridle.
- 37:30It's uncomfortable. It's painful to the horse and to
- 37:34the mule. The sad thing is that many of us
- 37:39are like this and God is forced to accomplish His will in our
- 37:44lives through bit and bridle. God doesn't like a stubborn
- 37:49heart. Church or as the Bible sometimes
- 37:53defines it as being stiff necked.
- 37:57Ezekiel 37 says to God says to the prophet, The people of
- 38:03Israel are not willing to listen to you, because they are not
- 38:07willing to listen to me. For all the Israelites are
- 38:10hardened and obstinate. Zechariah 7311.
- 38:17They refused to pay attention. Stubbornly they turned their
- 38:20backs and covered their ears. They made their hearts hard as
- 38:24Flint. Psalm 8111 through 2 or 11:00
- 38:28and 12:00. But my people did not listen to
- 38:30my voice. Israel would not submit to me.
- 38:34So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their
- 38:37own counsels, Romans 25 says. But because of their
- 38:43stubbornness, your stubbornness and your unpennited heart,
- 38:47you're storing up wrath against yourself for the day of wrath.
- 38:50And then again in Acts 751, Stephen would charge the
- 38:54Sanhedrin at his trial. You're stiff neck people.
- 38:59Your hearts and ears are still uncircumcised.
- 39:03You are just like your ancestors.
- 39:05You always resist the Holy Spirit.
- 39:09I thank God for the Holy Spirit in my life.
- 39:12He's there to come alongside. He's there to comfort, He's
- 39:16there to teach, He's there to speak to us.
- 39:19But He's also there to convict us of our sin.
- 39:24And if we didn't have that conviction, we would just be LED
- 39:27away by every desire that comes in our life.
- 39:30Well, because God loves us, the Holy Spirit convicts us and
- 39:35causes us to come back. I welcome that conviction of the
- 39:40Spirit of my life. He prevents me from being like
- 39:44that horse in that mule or like the stiff necked.
- 39:49I need to yield to that correction.
- 39:51God promises to transform our hearts when we are His.
- 39:55Ezekiel 3626 It says, God says, I will give you a new heart and
- 40:01put a new spirit in you. I will remove from you your
- 40:03heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.
- 40:07Jeremiah 24/7 I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the
- 40:12Lord. They will be my people and I
- 40:14will be their God, for they will return to me with all their
- 40:18heart. God responds to a humble heart.
- 40:23Psalm 5117 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken
- 40:28and contrite heart. Oh God, you will not despise.
- 40:32James, 46, says God opposes the proud but gives a favor to the
- 40:37humble. The stubborn heart will
- 40:40experience unnecessary pain. The stubborn heart will
- 40:44experience suffering a life filled with frustration, and it
- 40:51is all self-inflicted because there is no acknowledgement of
- 40:55sin. As we wind down to our final
- 41:01point, the rejoicing of an upright heart, we see a contrast
- 41:07that happens here. Many sorrows shall be to the
- 41:10wicked, it says. Here the Lord declares to the
- 41:16wicked, the unbeliever, that they will experience many
- 41:19sorrows. Because there is no confession
- 41:23of sin, there is no forgiveness. Because there is no forgiveness,
- 41:28there is no relationship. Because there's no relationship,
- 41:32there is no instruction on how to avoid the pain and suffering
- 41:36that accompanies a life filled with sin.
- 41:38Does this describe your life tonight?
- 41:43How long will you continue on this road to the one who lives a
- 41:48life apart from God? The Bible says you walk in
- 41:51darkness. Earlier I read that it it was
- 41:55for this reason that we should pray to the Lord while he may be
- 42:00found. It says there will come a time
- 42:04when the offer of forgiveness will no longer be available.
- 42:09The Bible tells us that man is appointed to die once and then
- 42:14the judgement. When that happens, your
- 42:19opportunity has passed. No one knows when that day will
- 42:23come. So I encourage you tonight, if
- 42:26you're here and you've been wrestling with the fact, should
- 42:29I get right with God? Should I confess my sin?
- 42:32Should I become a Christian? Tonight's the night.
- 42:35Settle that between you and God in a moment when we close, I'm
- 42:43going to give an invitation, an opportunity to settle this issue
- 42:46to receive the love of God. So now the contrast.
- 42:50But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround them.
- 42:53Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice you righteous, and shout for joy
- 42:58all you upright in heart. The Bible tells us He gives us
- 43:03promises of God that are yes and Amen.
- 43:08And when we place our trust in the Lord, mercy becomes a
- 43:11barrier around us. The Bible tells us that His
- 43:14mercies are new every morning. Great is thy faithfulness.
- 43:20And when we trust in the Lord, a change happens that causes us to
- 43:23rejoice in the one who forgave us and excitement for the one
- 43:27who loved us and gave himself for us.
- 43:32At this time, if I can have the worship team go ahead and come
- 43:35on up as we close. Many years later, after this
- 43:42Psalm was written, the Bible tells us that God came to the
- 43:46earth as a man. He preached the gospel of
- 43:51forgiveness and reconciliation to the Father, went to the cross
- 43:56to die for our sins, was buried, and on the third day He rose
- 44:01again for our justification. His name is Jesus, and the Bible
- 44:08says that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.
- 44:14Church, is there anyone here tonight dealing with the
- 44:19rebellious heart, an area that the Spirit has been convicting,
- 44:25but you refuse to surrender, to surrender to Him.
- 44:29How long will you continue to resist the Spirit?
- 44:34Or is there someone here that has never experienced the love
- 44:38of God and the forgiveness of sin?
- 44:40Never experienced the wonderful blessing of knowing that you're
- 44:43in right standing with God and now have the hope of heaven?
- 44:48It's time to confess your sin to the Lord.
- 44:54Jesus said, come to me, all you who are weary and heavy in
- 44:58heart, and I will give you rest for your souls.
- 45:07As we close with this last song, I would encourage you to make
- 45:12your way forward to meet with the pastors in the prayer team
- 45:18and do business with the Lord. Confess your sin to the Lord,
- 45:28ask Him to wash and to cleanse you.
- 45:30And again, we see as David was teaching us, He's ready to
- 45:34forgive. Whether it's your first time
- 45:37coming into relationship with the Lord or you've been walking
- 45:39with him for a long time, but you've been struggling with that
- 45:43rebellious heart in that one area.
- 45:44God wants to heal you of that We just need to trust and by faith
- 45:51come to Him and He'll do that work.
- 45:55Let's close in prayer, Father, we just pray that You would help
- 46:01us to turn from our evil ways, to turn back to You, to remain
- 46:07in You, Jesus, to abide, to not allow any opportunity, but that
- 46:13You would surround us with Your mercies and keep us in your
- 46:16love. And Lord, where there's those
- 46:20areas where we find rebellion, we find that sin that just
- 46:26sticks to our hearts. Lord, we confess it to You right
- 46:28now. We ask that you would forgive us
- 46:30of our sin, that You wash us and that you would cleanse us, That
- 46:34you would purify our hearts and our minds, and that you would
- 46:36fill us with Your Spirit. And You would help us to move
- 46:39forward in victory, because You have accomplished great things
- 46:42in our lives even before we confess this sin.
- 46:46But now we can have the beautiful fellowship with You,
- 46:52no longer trying to hide, but being open and sincere with you,
- 47:00with our life, with our thoughts, with our conversation.
- 47:04We want to honour you and Lord, I pray for those who are here
- 47:09tonight who have never experienced your love, your
- 47:14kindness, leading them to repentance, to a new
- 47:17relationship. The Bible says your word says
- 47:21that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation.
- 47:23The old things that passed away, behold, all things are new.
- 47:27Father, I pray for that person that's listening on the radio.
- 47:32I pray for that person who's watching online.
- 47:34I pray for that person this evening who is here, who needs
- 47:40that relationship with you, that you would give him that strength
- 47:43and that courage to repent of their sins, to turn away and to
- 47:49turn to the one who can restore and can heal.
- 47:54To know their sins are forgiven, to know they're right with you,
- 47:57and to know they have that hope of heaven.
- 47:59God do that work. We pray in Jesus name, Amen.
- 48:04We pray that you've been encouraged by this Bible study,
- 48:07delivered live from the sanctuary of Calvary Church.
