Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: All right, folks, welcome back to the last edition of
- 0:05Speaker 1: Refresh for the month of November. I'm Jake Coper and
- 0:09Speaker 1: we have a handful of different updates here across the
- 0:12Speaker 1: country like Ohio, Kansas, Iowa, and Pennsylvania. So I hope
- 0:17Speaker 1: you guys enjoy a little check in and some strategy
- 0:21Speaker 1: that might help you over the next seven days. As
- 0:23Speaker 1: you know, Roughresh is brought to you by land dot Com,
- 0:26Speaker 1: the leading online real estate marketplace to find your perfect rural, recreational,
- 0:31Speaker 1: agricultural hunting properties here in the US. I feel like
- 0:37Speaker 1: we're entering a little bit of an awkward time of
- 0:39Speaker 1: the year. Depending on what state you're in, depending on
- 0:42Speaker 1: where the gun seasons are placed, you might have you
- 0:45Speaker 1: might be dealing with a new hand now then even
- 0:47Speaker 1: just a couple of weeks ago, and we're going to
- 0:50Speaker 1: give you some intel, some insight on how to roll
- 0:52Speaker 1: with the punches move forward. And that is my challenge
- 0:55Speaker 1: for you guys this week. Just keep keep moving forward,
- 0:58Speaker 1: go out and scout thanks to restrategize, brainstorm. That's all
- 1:03Speaker 1: you can do. So without further too, let's kick things
- 1:07Speaker 1: off with Casey Smith from the Element. Here we go,
- 1:16Speaker 1: all right. First up, we have Casey Smith from The
- 1:19Speaker 1: Element who just shot his personal best buck in Kansas.
- 1:24Speaker 1: You're sitting in Iowa and you're a guy I gotta
- 1:26Speaker 1: talk to because you're you were like in the cut
- 1:30Speaker 1: man you have flying around.
- 1:32Speaker 2: It's a weird feeling when you have like a big tag,
- 1:36Speaker 2: like an Iowa tag is you kind of know right
- 1:38Speaker 2: like you I want to sit there and like absorb
- 1:43Speaker 2: the feeling of shooting a giant buck, my biggest buck ever,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and then it's like I actually I got to spend
- 1:50Speaker 2: about twelve hours taking daddy in and it's time to
- 1:53Speaker 2: roll on because I need to do this tag justice.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So it's it's a strange feeling, but you know, first
- 1:58Speaker 3: world problems.
- 1:58Speaker 2: As they say, super blast to be able to hunt
- 2:01Speaker 2: multiple states.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah man, so yeah, congratulations, incredible gear. We've stayed in
- 2:07Speaker 1: touch here throughout the season, and what have you been
- 2:10Speaker 1: seeing as far as activity here? You know, in the
- 2:13Speaker 1: last couple of days here Illinois, this was our first
- 2:16Speaker 1: we just wrapped up the first little leg of our
- 2:18Speaker 1: gun season. There was there was some riding activity and
- 2:20Speaker 1: then some like man, I can't wait for a foot
- 2:23Speaker 1: of snow activity too. So what have you been seeing.
- 2:27Speaker 2: So Kansas and I are a lot different. Do you
- 2:31Speaker 2: want both or do you want yeah? I would yeah, okay,
- 2:34Speaker 2: So in Kansas it was very much locked down. The
- 2:39Speaker 2: only bucks you saw on their feet were the dinkers,
- 2:43Speaker 2: you know, they were running around two year olds and
- 2:46Speaker 2: under were were roman. I saw in general less bucks
- 2:51Speaker 2: this year. I think that we had some EHD after
- 2:54Speaker 2: talking to farmers and stuff, and some of the crop
- 2:58Speaker 2: rotation wasn't favorable for us, So not as many bucks
- 3:04Speaker 2: as I'm used to, you know. But if you were
- 3:06Speaker 2: in an open area and you could find a buck
- 3:09Speaker 2: on lockdown, you could get on them. Because I love
- 3:12Speaker 2: lockdown whenever I can see the bucks. Now, when if
- 3:15Speaker 2: you're in the timber country and you can't see the bucks,
- 3:17Speaker 2: or you're in you know, my by mile crop country
- 3:20Speaker 2: and they're all on the fence rows.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It's difficult, right, I mean, you know this very well.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But if you're out in you know, say grassland habitat
- 3:27Speaker 2: and you can see bucks and glass a long ways
- 3:30Speaker 2: like the lockdown's awesome because you just bet them and
- 3:33Speaker 2: go after them.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And I kind of like jason them down, you know.
- 3:35Speaker 3: So that was fun. But I would say it was difficult.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Of course, I think the nation understands that the temperatures
- 3:43Speaker 2: have not been favorable for most of the month. So
- 3:48Speaker 2: with that comes some early, you know, even nighttime deer
- 3:52Speaker 2: movement getting back to their betting areas as opposed to
- 3:55Speaker 2: you know, if it was thirty five at nine am,
- 3:57Speaker 2: there'd still be deer very.
- 3:59Speaker 3: Much on their feet in crop fields and this and that.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I just wasn't seeing that.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And you combine that with the warmer temperatures also have
- 4:06Speaker 2: made for some foggy mornings I feel like, you know,
- 4:09Speaker 2: because there's more humidity than what there normally would be
- 4:11Speaker 2: when the cold you know, the cold fronts knocks.
- 4:13Speaker 3: That out of the air.
- 4:14Speaker 2: So it made really difficult conditions for glassing as well.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And I've had that in both places, Iowa and Kansas.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, now you juxpose that to Iowa. Iowa really seems.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Like lockdown is over for the most part. I mean,
- 4:29Speaker 2: I'm sure there's still our bucks lockeddown. I'm having a
- 4:31Speaker 2: hard time seeing my shooters on the hoof. However, I'm rattling,
- 4:37Speaker 2: especially in the evenings, and I'm having multiple deer every
- 4:41Speaker 2: rattling sequence come in to that ratling sea when this evening.
- 4:44Speaker 2: In fact, I've had a really like a heart wrening
- 4:48Speaker 2: pass on one upper one forties twelve point that was
- 4:51Speaker 2: three years old, and I normally would really like if
- 4:55Speaker 2: I was in forty eight other states, I would probably
- 4:58Speaker 2: be ripping that, you know, out of respect to the
- 5:01Speaker 2: landowner and just also you know, wanting to hunt anspture deer.
- 5:06Speaker 3: I gave him the past.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So when you're rid on in the evening specifically and
- 5:10Speaker 1: even thinking here for the next seven days, are you waiting?
- 5:14Speaker 1: I mean, are you riding on at three o'clock, four
- 5:15Speaker 1: o'clock on the hour? Are you waiting right towards that
- 5:18Speaker 1: golden hour, you know, thirty forty minutes before sunset? What's
- 5:21Speaker 1: kind of what? Are you busting them out?
- 5:23Speaker 2: Pretty much as soon as I get in the tree,
- 5:25Speaker 2: I mean crazy enough. On the walk in this evening
- 5:28Speaker 2: in Iowa, we came across a little rut fest not
- 5:33Speaker 2: where I was trying to go.
- 5:36Speaker 3: It was. Let me explain the property a little bit.
- 5:39Speaker 2: There's a bean field on top, and then there's a
- 5:43Speaker 2: lot of CRP buffers around the bean like it sits
- 5:45Speaker 2: up really well right as far as like deer.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Habitat goes hard to hunt because of access. And then
- 5:49Speaker 3: in the middle of crp fields are fingers of timber
- 5:52Speaker 3: through the draws, you know, kind of classic Midwest Iowa
- 5:55Speaker 3: looking stuff, right.
- 5:56Speaker 2: And these deer we're all down on the adjacent property.
- 6:01Speaker 2: There's a pond, probably about a one acre pond, and
- 6:05Speaker 2: it has a real marshy area at the head of that,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and that hits the fence, and there were five or
- 6:09Speaker 2: six bucks right there at the head of that, just
- 6:11Speaker 2: in there.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Sparring, posturing up at one another, and there was one
- 6:16Speaker 3: four year old in the group.
- 6:18Speaker 2: He's all busted up, kind of a thin antler deer,
- 6:20Speaker 2: a deer I knew, and he kind of postured through
- 6:22Speaker 2: and then left, and that made me kind of decide
- 6:26Speaker 2: that there wasn't a more mature deer in there.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I think it was just one of those things.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Where it's kind of the late rut situation where all
- 6:34Speaker 2: those bucks are kind of getting back together, especially the
- 6:37Speaker 2: young ones, and they're kind of doing their re establishing
- 6:40Speaker 2: who's the boss.
- 6:41Speaker 3: That kind of stuff.
- 6:43Speaker 2: So that's kind of the unique thing that I saw there.
- 6:48Speaker 2: But that leads back to your question. They were sparring,
- 6:52Speaker 2: and that kind of very much gives me confidence to
- 6:55Speaker 2: know that that works now. It is a start contrast
- 6:59Speaker 2: to morning versus evening. I have not rattled in a
- 7:01Speaker 2: deer in the morning yet. I don't and I don't
- 7:04Speaker 2: really know why that.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Is the case. But in the evenings it's working really,
- 7:08Speaker 3: really well.
- 7:08Speaker 2: I mean, I got to the stand late because we
- 7:11Speaker 2: ran across that little you know, buckfest down there. But
- 7:15Speaker 2: I rattled the first time, I think at three point forty,
- 7:19Speaker 2: and had a two year old and a decent buck
- 7:22Speaker 2: come running in.
- 7:24Speaker 3: They never got in range, but they they ran up.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And I think they got actually cut off by some doze.
- 7:31Speaker 2: But then the second time I rattled was about four
- 7:34Speaker 2: to ten, and that's when that future stud just ran
- 7:37Speaker 2: to the base.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Of the tree.
- 7:38Speaker 2: He just came up over the hill through the RP,
- 7:41Speaker 2: just straight in, you know, just kind of what you
- 7:43Speaker 2: dream of. But yeah, yeah, and then again later I
- 7:46Speaker 2: rattled in another three year old eight point so strock
- 7:50Speaker 2: and rolling.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, that's that's a really good fresh piece of
- 7:54Speaker 1: advice for the time of year. And I always find
- 7:56Speaker 1: it interesting too. I feel like you can pick up
- 7:58Speaker 1: a lot just from social media. In the last couple
- 8:00Speaker 1: of days, I've seen the big bucks biding to the
- 8:04Speaker 1: death for the first time, you know, like, and it
- 8:07Speaker 1: seems like that's this happened here in the last couple
- 8:09Speaker 1: of days. So I feel like that probably adds a
- 8:11Speaker 1: little bit more context to do your's success too. In fact,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I just picked up I mean, you and I talked
- 8:17Speaker 1: about this previously, but I picked up one of my shooters, Daylight,
- 8:20Speaker 1: for the first time, and I think like thirty five days,
- 8:24Speaker 1: and he'd broken off a time, and he didn't really
- 8:29Speaker 1: seem like much of a fodder.
- 8:30Speaker 3: I didn't think.
- 8:31Speaker 2: So I think that they are very much kind of
- 8:34Speaker 2: duking it out for the last good smells.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, So as far as so right on in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the evenings you're finding success, is there anything else words
- 8:42Speaker 1: of Encouragement's Thanksgiving week? You probably have family stuff. You've
- 8:45Speaker 1: probably been hunting like an animal the whole bomb, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: now you got to go back and say, hey, I
- 8:50Speaker 1: still need to go out and hunt, And how are
- 8:54Speaker 1: you gonna Are you gonna position this for success for
- 8:56Speaker 1: anyone that's gonna try to sneak out here in the
- 8:59Speaker 1: next seven days?
- 9:00Speaker 2: For sure, I would say that now I'm kind of weird, right,
- 9:05Speaker 2: I just told everybody. I like hunting lock down, and
- 9:07Speaker 2: nobody really likes hunting locked down. You know, in specific situations,
- 9:10Speaker 2: it's good. The same thing goes for the heat of
- 9:12Speaker 2: the rut if you have target bucks. I found that,
- 9:15Speaker 2: like the heat of the rut is difficult because you
- 9:18Speaker 2: don't know where they're going to be.
- 9:20Speaker 3: And I think we're starting to see.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Those target bucks actually kind of go back to using
- 9:23Speaker 2: their core areas a lot more, and.
- 9:25Speaker 3: So trail cameras for sure.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Like if you pick up a deer on shil camera,
- 9:29Speaker 2: then you can have a lot more confidence I think
- 9:32Speaker 2: over the next week of that deer being in that area,
- 9:34Speaker 2: whereas you know, ten five days ago, even if you
- 9:39Speaker 2: picked up a buck on shil camera, it's almost like, Okay,
- 9:41Speaker 2: let me go way away from that because that's where
- 9:44Speaker 2: he's actually going to be tomorrow, you know. So I
- 9:47Speaker 2: think that it's a great time of year to catch
- 9:50Speaker 2: bucks you are still feeling ruddy, but also not roaming
- 9:53Speaker 2: near as far as they were.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's that's really good advice. As far
- 9:58Speaker 1: as one to ten next next seven days, ten being
- 10:02Speaker 1: the best week of the year, one being one of
- 10:03Speaker 1: the worst weeks of the year, you're in Iowa, you
- 10:06Speaker 1: have a tag in your pocket. How much conviction do
- 10:09Speaker 1: you have in the next seven days.
- 10:12Speaker 2: I would say it's really good because we are looking
- 10:16Speaker 2: at the best weather front that we've had so far
- 10:18Speaker 2: this year. I know the dates aren't good, and I
- 10:21Speaker 2: know the science tells you that the rut is always
- 10:24Speaker 2: determined by you know, or dironal length right or length
- 10:29Speaker 2: of day. However, cold weather will get the deer on
- 10:33Speaker 2: their feet and get them moving.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Whether it is going to increase.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Any rut action, I think it just increases visible rut action,
- 10:39Speaker 2: you know.
- 10:39Speaker 3: So I would say that in the next week, we're looking.
- 10:42Speaker 2: At seven I feel like especially in Iowa.
- 10:49Speaker 3: I think, I mean, Kansas is different.
- 10:51Speaker 2: I wouldn't go that higher, but for Iowa, for the Midwest,
- 10:55Speaker 2: especially since it's been so hot, I think that it's
- 10:58Speaker 2: gonna be a great week.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Mm hmm. I love it. That's that's the positivity we
- 11:03Speaker 1: need right now.
- 11:04Speaker 3: So I like the positivity.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Man. Sure. One question I think would probably be in
- 11:10Speaker 1: the back of a lot of people's minds, so as
- 11:12Speaker 1: far as hunting food sources in the evenings for this
- 11:15Speaker 1: next seven days, is that something that you're going to
- 11:17Speaker 1: try to target corn beans or are you still going
- 11:19Speaker 1: to be kind of set up in some sort of
- 11:21Speaker 1: transitional area or in the woods or timber or just
- 11:25Speaker 1: inn I was specifically, and you know people can extrapolate
- 11:28Speaker 1: that for the Midwest.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so I think that in Iwa, I know of
- 11:32Speaker 2: an eighth of an acre of standing beans here on
- 11:35Speaker 2: this property. And the other day we showed up and
- 11:37Speaker 2: it was that rainy day where it was pretty cold,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and those deer were hammered that little tiny eighth of
- 11:42Speaker 2: an acre because temperature is somewhat relative, right, Like it
- 11:46Speaker 2: was a shock. It was a twenty degree drop even
- 11:47Speaker 2: though it's only forty five when it has been being
- 11:50Speaker 2: sixty five or seventy. They're like, oh, I gotta go
- 11:52Speaker 2: hit the feed. And so I think absolutely that that
- 11:56Speaker 2: anywhere you can find good food is it's going to
- 11:58Speaker 2: be awesome.
- 12:00Speaker 3: But I still think that like on mornings, being tucked
- 12:03Speaker 3: back up in the stuff is a great move.
- 12:06Speaker 2: But if it's the evening, I think you really have
- 12:10Speaker 2: a hard time hunting, like out in the open, But
- 12:13Speaker 2: like if you can find yourself at the head of
- 12:15Speaker 2: a draw that leads to good food, you know, a
- 12:19Speaker 2: staging area, you know a place you can let the
- 12:21Speaker 2: dose get by you and not smell you or see
- 12:24Speaker 2: you and be there for the last thirty minutes. That's
- 12:27Speaker 2: a really good opportunity to see a mature buck on
- 12:28Speaker 2: his feet.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I like it.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Well, good luck and Iowa congratulations on all the success
- 12:33Speaker 1: this year.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Thank you, brother, thank you very much.
- 12:36Speaker 1: And as far as these hunts this year, will they
- 12:39Speaker 1: be on the element next year or when is that
- 12:41Speaker 1: when those will drop?
- 12:42Speaker 2: Probably I shot my biggest public land buck ever this
- 12:46Speaker 2: year a few weeks ago. That hunt will drop on
- 12:51Speaker 2: Monday the twenty third or fourth or something like that.
- 12:54Speaker 2: So by the time this goes out, it's already is out.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And that actually is an exhilarating on.
- 12:59Speaker 3: I mean, the craziest.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I rattled this deary and he just rips through a
- 13:04Speaker 2: bunch of cattails and frag and all kinds of stuff
- 13:07Speaker 2: to get to us, and you know, stand off at
- 13:10Speaker 2: fifteen yards, so pretty sick.
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'd appreciate and thank you for bringing that up. That'll
- 13:14Speaker 3: be out. As far as my the biggest book.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Ever that just happened, that will likely be a twenty
- 13:21Speaker 2: sixth release.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Okay, I'm sure you know we're picking up pieces right now.
- 13:26Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 13:27Speaker 1: Well, that's people can go watch a HELMP from this
- 13:30Speaker 1: year on the element, So I encourage him to go
- 13:32Speaker 1: do that. And congratulations again on awesome year and good
- 13:34Speaker 1: luck and Iowa thank you, Jake, really appreciate it all right.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Next up is Clint Campbell with Truth from the stand
- 13:41Speaker 1: back in Pennsylvania. He spent a long time in Kansas.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And uh, we're getting to the point where now is
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's the bottom of the ninth of November. Man, Like,
- 13:52Speaker 1: there's no way to sugarcoat this. We're there. And before
- 13:56Speaker 1: we get into what you've been seeing and what you're
- 13:57Speaker 1: looking forward to over the next week, how many public
- 14:01Speaker 1: land acres are in the state of Pennsylvania and the
- 14:05Speaker 1: answers in millions?
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it's three and a half million.
- 14:10Speaker 1: My little book says five point eight.
- 14:13Speaker 4: I'm gonna say five. I was trying to remember.
- 14:16Speaker 5: It's funny because I had looked at it probably like
- 14:18Speaker 5: three months ago, so I don't even remember why I
- 14:20Speaker 5: looked at it. I was just probably out of curiosity.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Dang.
- 14:24Speaker 5: I knew it was millions. I knew it was millions,
- 14:26Speaker 5: but I was between three and five.
- 14:28Speaker 4: So man, you got.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Pretty pretty dark close. Yeah, that's that's pretty dark close.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So what have you been seeing here in the last
- 14:35Speaker 1: you know, a couple of days. And I know, I
- 14:37Speaker 1: know you just got back from a really long extended trip,
- 14:39Speaker 1: so I understand if you haven't been back out in Pennsylvania,
- 14:41Speaker 1: but kind of what have you been seeing from cameras activity? Friends? Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and what's been going on? Or is there still some
- 14:46Speaker 1: running activity going on? Yeah?
- 14:48Speaker 4: There is.
- 14:49Speaker 5: You know, I was out, I was out in the
- 14:51Speaker 5: planes and the faucet kind of turned off out there
- 14:53Speaker 5: as the weather as the weather hit or got warm,
- 14:56Speaker 5: and then it was going to rain.
- 14:58Speaker 4: But I was starting before I left.
- 14:59Speaker 5: I was already to see Bucks start to kind of
- 15:02Speaker 5: cruise again, you know, and we're coming out of lockdown
- 15:05Speaker 5: and stuff like that, you know, and so whether it
- 15:08Speaker 5: just kind of turns I.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Ended up coming back coming back to PA.
- 15:10Speaker 5: I haven't been able to get out like like you'd mentioned,
- 15:12Speaker 5: but I've just been kind of monitoring cameras and the
- 15:14Speaker 5: bummer was there's real good. There's an area that I
- 15:18Speaker 5: like to hunt that usually historically, like the eighteenth and
- 15:21Speaker 5: nineteenth have always been really really good, like twentieth you know,
- 15:24Speaker 5: twenty first, and I just couldn't get out of work
- 15:28Speaker 5: early enough to get there. And sure enough, like I
- 15:30Speaker 5: don't have a cell camera in that spot because I've
- 15:32Speaker 5: had it stolen there multiple times, so I put it.
- 15:35Speaker 4: I put a junker in there.
- 15:37Speaker 5: And but where I have some cell cameras, like all
- 15:40Speaker 5: of a sudden, like one of the better bucks that
- 15:41Speaker 5: I've actually had on camera all year showed up on
- 15:45Speaker 5: the nineteenth and so hitting a scrape right and bought
- 15:50Speaker 5: it work at the licking branch, you know, urinated in it,
- 15:53Speaker 5: doing all the things right. And so I'm starting to
- 15:55Speaker 5: see that, you know, as you mentioned, we're in the
- 15:58Speaker 5: bottom of the ninth, starting to see that like bottom
- 16:01Speaker 5: of the ninth activity kind of happened where you know,
- 16:04Speaker 5: it's gonna be probably dead as a doornail most places, right,
- 16:07Speaker 5: you know, comparatively speaking.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Right to what we experience November November.
- 16:12Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, but if you're in the right spot, there's
- 16:17Speaker 5: still magic to be made, right, And so that's that's
- 16:20Speaker 5: kind of what I'm seeing from my cameras. I'm still seeing,
- 16:23Speaker 5: you know, what i'll call satellite bucks still doing a
- 16:26Speaker 5: lot of like moving like they're they seem to be
- 16:28Speaker 5: really visible. But it seems like, you know, the big
- 16:30Speaker 5: boys of course, might be hanging a little tighter to
- 16:34Speaker 5: the cover.
- 16:34Speaker 4: They're still covering ground.
- 16:37Speaker 5: It's it's now it seems like it's more the twilight,
- 16:42Speaker 5: so gray light on both ends of the day. Right,
- 16:44Speaker 5: it's no longer like mid day cruising hanging out like
- 16:47Speaker 5: I'm really seeing it close to like bedding cover. And
- 16:49Speaker 5: they're getting back just a little late in the morning
- 16:53Speaker 5: or getting out just a little earlier in the in
- 16:55Speaker 5: the afternoon or evening, if you will, right, And so
- 16:58Speaker 5: that's kind of what the cameras are telling me now.
- 16:59Speaker 5: So I'm kind of chomping out the bit to get
- 17:01Speaker 5: back out because I know, you know, got one more
- 17:03Speaker 5: swing at it, and it's not a bad swing if
- 17:06Speaker 5: you know where to be. And I've got a couple
- 17:07Speaker 5: of spots that I think are that are primed, so you.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Mentioned, you know, if you're in the right spot, you
- 17:12Speaker 1: still might be seeing some activity, and it sounds like
- 17:14Speaker 1: you need to be a little bit tighter to cover
- 17:16Speaker 1: more than likely for someone listening that says, yeah, where
- 17:19Speaker 1: I hunted the majority of November, it was on fire.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Now I've hunted it a couple of times, and you know,
- 17:24Speaker 1: you see a spike and a dough family group that's
- 17:27Speaker 1: back together, and like, dude, I'm not in the right spot,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and I know the clock's ticking. So what would you
- 17:32Speaker 1: tell that person to at least try to try to
- 17:35Speaker 1: find here and also remain somewhat calm too, And maybe
- 17:39Speaker 1: you don't want to be cool, maybe you want to
- 17:40Speaker 1: be sporadic and crazy.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not going to be calm. You know, I'm
- 17:47Speaker 4: going to be pretty.
- 17:48Speaker 5: And when I say that, like, I'm just going to
- 17:49Speaker 5: be really mobile, like I'm not gonna soak spots necessarily,
- 17:52Speaker 5: Like this isn't the rut where I'm going to put
- 17:54Speaker 5: you know, I'm just like some people will still kind
- 17:57Speaker 5: of do this where it's like time in seat and
- 17:59Speaker 5: I'm just going to ride out all they sit. It's
- 18:00Speaker 5: like I'll do that whenever I'm in that kind of
- 18:02Speaker 5: time frame where it's like, man, magic can happen at
- 18:04Speaker 5: any moment. You know, you can have a giant or
- 18:07Speaker 5: your target deer walk through because they're moving all day
- 18:09Speaker 5: in daylight, anding through a caution to the wind. To me,
- 18:11Speaker 5: when we get to this timeframe, I probably start to
- 18:14Speaker 5: hunt it more like I hunt like that mid to
- 18:16Speaker 5: later October timeframe where I'm trying to constantly find where
- 18:19Speaker 5: I'm going to be in the game at right and
- 18:22Speaker 5: if it's if I don't have a good feeling about
- 18:24Speaker 5: the spot I'm in, whether the trail cameras have been
- 18:26Speaker 5: dead in that area, or if the sign has kind
- 18:28Speaker 5: of told me that they're not in the area.
- 18:29Speaker 4: That's the other hard part, Like they're not.
- 18:30Speaker 5: Really laying down stuff like you had seen previously, so
- 18:34Speaker 5: you're probably really relying more on trying to cut a track,
- 18:38Speaker 5: you know, trying to get a visual on something like
- 18:40Speaker 5: a little further away if you can, you know, if
- 18:41Speaker 5: you're in an area that you can see or whatever
- 18:43Speaker 5: the case is.
- 18:45Speaker 4: But I'm definitely not staying calm.
- 18:48Speaker 5: I'm probably going back to more of my kind of
- 18:50Speaker 5: like pre rut kind of like approach to things. I'm
- 18:53Speaker 5: going to stick closer to betting cover. I'm probably going
- 18:57Speaker 5: to play the odds of like trying to if I
- 19:00Speaker 5: know there's a good betting area that's going to hold
- 19:02Speaker 5: like a decent buck or two, typically, I'm probably going
- 19:04Speaker 5: to play that and kind of bank on maybe catching
- 19:06Speaker 5: them coming back late or leaving a little bit early
- 19:08Speaker 5: to kind of.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Make their rounds, so to speak.
- 19:12Speaker 5: The dough situation, I feel is almost kind of like
- 19:15Speaker 5: off the table to a degree, like the dough family groups,
- 19:17Speaker 5: because you're really kind of like if they've been bred
- 19:19Speaker 5: or they're not in, then you're kind of like just
- 19:21Speaker 5: outside the game, like you got no shot at that point,
- 19:24Speaker 5: right unless I start to see, like if I'm in
- 19:28Speaker 5: an area that I know there's like a dough family
- 19:30Speaker 5: and I see a and I see a straggler, like,
- 19:32Speaker 5: then then maybe, right, But if I'm seeing them grouped
- 19:35Speaker 5: up and stuff like that, like I'm not I'm not
- 19:36Speaker 5: spending time in those areas. And that was honestly kind
- 19:38Speaker 5: of my similar strategy when rubs in the planes, like
- 19:41Speaker 5: I would look for dough family groups, and once they
- 19:43Speaker 5: broke up, I knew it was game on. And then
- 19:46Speaker 5: soon they got back together, I knew that place was
- 19:48Speaker 5: that place was cool.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I had I had a this week. Actually, its pretty funny,
- 20:01Speaker 1: A hundred. It the evening before seven bucks, like, oh
- 20:04Speaker 1: my gosh, you know, and I'm honey a specific deer,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and then I went and hunted to the next morning
- 20:09Speaker 1: and then here comes the dough two yearly and I
- 20:12Speaker 1: don't know if it's the same dough. And I was like, oh,
- 20:13Speaker 1: party's over.
- 20:17Speaker 4: That was exactly what happened.
- 20:18Speaker 5: That's exactly what happened to me in that cold snap
- 20:21Speaker 5: that we had that came across the Midwest there like
- 20:23Speaker 5: the middle ish early part of November, and that was
- 20:26Speaker 5: when I saw all my had all my encounters, and
- 20:29Speaker 5: it was like, same as you.
- 20:30Speaker 4: I saw seven bucks.
- 20:32Speaker 5: I forget I think it was the ninth or tenth,
- 20:34Speaker 5: and then it was.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Just like someone turned the fossil off.
- 20:36Speaker 5: Like I came back the next day it was the
- 20:38Speaker 5: same thing where I was like, hey, there's seven doughs altogether.
- 20:42Speaker 4: I was like it was a bad sign.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Yeah, But you know, I think, you know, there's a
- 20:47Speaker 1: lot of people to preach, you know, the magic of
- 20:49Speaker 1: Thanksgiving week and and those bucks desperately searching and last
- 20:54Speaker 1: like five out of six years, I've already killed a buck.
- 20:56Speaker 1: So honestly, typically I have a hundred. This this time
- 20:58Speaker 1: period is hard, and I will be because I'm still
- 21:01Speaker 1: afterwood and so I'm taking all this advice to heart here.
- 21:04Speaker 1: But I think for someone that has an extended time,
- 21:08Speaker 1: maybe they have more time this weekend because you know,
- 21:10Speaker 1: Thanksgiving they're going to go eat some turkey and then sorry,
- 21:13Speaker 1: I'm gonna go hunt this upcoming weekend. I mean, your
- 21:15Speaker 1: your strategy here is just go in there and try
- 21:19Speaker 1: to find something for a reason to be there or
- 21:21Speaker 1: whether it's intel camera data and and just ultimately everyone
- 21:25Speaker 1: hats to admit it hope to get a little lucky.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Yeah, And I think part of it too is like
- 21:30Speaker 5: is you know a little bit where you hunt to
- 21:32Speaker 5: a degree for me hunting like the public that I
- 21:36Speaker 5: hunt and things of that and things of that nature.
- 21:40Speaker 5: You know, it's been pounded all season, right, so I
- 21:42Speaker 5: got to really kind of go in and qualify. Right.
- 21:44Speaker 5: But I think if you're in a situation where you
- 21:46Speaker 5: have like lease ground or your own ground or whatever
- 21:48Speaker 5: and that you're managing and stuff like that, and you
- 21:50Speaker 5: kind of know what deer in the area, you can
- 21:53Speaker 5: I think then you can maybe ride things out a
- 21:55Speaker 5: little bit more.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 21:57Speaker 5: For me, it's more of a I have to go
- 21:59Speaker 5: back prospect again to a degree, right, you know, which
- 22:04Speaker 5: means I'm going to be a little bit more mobile.
- 22:05Speaker 5: I'm not going to pull a whole lot of time
- 22:07Speaker 5: because I when I think of that, the person I
- 22:09Speaker 5: think of, and you probably would agree that when I
- 22:13Speaker 5: think of that time frame, like the week before and
- 22:17Speaker 5: after Thanksgiving, like that two week kind of period, the
- 22:20Speaker 5: person who comes to my mind is Don Higgins, like
- 22:22Speaker 5: because that is the person that, like, you know, years ago,
- 22:25Speaker 5: when I had him on the show, we were talking,
- 22:26Speaker 5: and that was he was the first one that kind of.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Told me about that week being so good.
- 22:31Speaker 5: And so when I think of that week, I think
- 22:33Speaker 5: of him a lot of times because that's where I
- 22:35Speaker 5: picked it up at. And but I also kind of
- 22:38Speaker 5: recognize that some of this too is you know, yes,
- 22:41Speaker 5: it can be good, but it's like you've got to
- 22:42Speaker 5: be in the game. And if you have a property
- 22:44Speaker 5: that's that's in the game, then awesome. If you don't,
- 22:48Speaker 5: you probably need to qualify and prospect and figure out,
- 22:51Speaker 5: you know, if where you're intending to hunt is putting
- 22:54Speaker 5: you in the game or not, And if not, then
- 22:56Speaker 5: you don't want to be spending time there because it's
- 22:58Speaker 5: going to feel like you're hunting the last week of January,
- 23:00Speaker 5: you know what I mean, or like whatever the whatever
- 23:03Speaker 5: your late season is with no destination food source, you
- 23:05Speaker 5: know what I mean, because like that's what you get.
- 23:07Speaker 4: You either get, you either get.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Yeah, this feels like pre ready because I'm in a
- 23:11Speaker 5: I'm in the game right and I've got the things
- 23:13Speaker 5: I need to have, right or I feel like I'm
- 23:15Speaker 5: hunting like the last.
- 23:16Speaker 4: Week of late season with no destination food right where
- 23:18Speaker 4: it's just the ghost town.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Right, perfect, perfect way to describe it. And then I think,
- 23:22Speaker 1: what about hunting public Land in Pennsylvania to everyone's been
- 23:27Speaker 1: out hunting really hard, and so like how much does
- 23:30Speaker 1: human pressure come into your weekend game plan for Thanksgiving weekend?
- 23:34Speaker 1: You're like, Okay, if I'm gonna be away from the family,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna be hunting. I need to try to make
- 23:37Speaker 1: good use of my time. I also know, based off
- 23:40Speaker 1: camera inventory or maybe historically, you know, one area gets
- 23:44Speaker 1: you know, hunted really hard. I mean, is that going
- 23:47Speaker 1: pretty heavy into your decision making process?
- 23:49Speaker 4: One hundred percent?
- 23:50Speaker 5: Yeah, because most of the places that I would hunt,
- 23:54Speaker 5: you know in that you know, Octobers November, like just
- 23:57Speaker 5: during the season in general, Like I won't go to
- 24:01Speaker 5: this during this time, right because it's it's going to
- 24:03Speaker 5: have been hunted pretty hard at this point. And it's
- 24:07Speaker 5: also places where people are going to be preparing for
- 24:09Speaker 5: gun seasons, so they're going to be out this weekend
- 24:11Speaker 5: putting up their stands, like doing their last minute stuff, right,
- 24:14Speaker 5: because I've literally hunted a couple of these places like
- 24:15Speaker 5: this week in particular, and had people walk in on
- 24:18Speaker 5: me where I hadn't seen a soul in there the
- 24:19Speaker 5: rest of the year, right, And so I'm more so
- 24:22Speaker 5: looking for places that are totally out of the way,
- 24:25Speaker 5: and it might even be places where I look at
- 24:27Speaker 5: and go it's probably not that great, but there's not
- 24:30Speaker 5: going to be people, right, And so my first kind
- 24:32Speaker 5: of criteria is just don't be near people and then
- 24:36Speaker 5: figure out what the deer situation is is from there,
- 24:39Speaker 5: because otherwise, you know, I'm going to have no deer
- 24:43Speaker 5: end people, which is just a recipe for you know, frustration,
- 24:45Speaker 5: a terrible weekend.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, a lot of frustration. So looking here at
- 24:49Speaker 1: the advanced weather forecast, you know, looking for this upcoming
- 24:54Speaker 1: week scale one to ten, ten being best week of
- 24:58Speaker 1: the year. There was we had some ten and I'll
- 25:00Speaker 1: be curious if we have more tents we have throughout
- 25:03Speaker 1: the remainder of the season. Refresh, But one to ten,
- 25:06Speaker 1: where do you put the next week at and I'll
- 25:07Speaker 1: give you a second look at the weather. Here we
- 25:09Speaker 1: do here, NOLLOI. We actually we do have some some
- 25:12Speaker 1: we have a good front rolling in. Yeah, the day
- 25:15Speaker 1: this this goes live. So I'm sure you guys gonna
- 25:17Speaker 1: be a day probably a day after that.
- 25:19Speaker 5: Man, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say it's probably like
- 25:26Speaker 5: a A seven, Okay, a seven.
- 25:32Speaker 4: I'll say that's optimistic seven or six. Yeah. The only
- 25:35Speaker 4: reason being is that we have some days.
- 25:37Speaker 5: It looks looks like we're going to have some highs
- 25:39Speaker 5: where it's not going to get out of the forties.
- 25:42Speaker 5: But we do have some stuff like going into next
- 25:44Speaker 5: week where it is going to get like touch sixties.
- 25:46Speaker 4: That's not great. But if I look at the very last.
- 25:49Speaker 5: Day of the ten day forecast, it's a forty one
- 25:53Speaker 5: and twenty eight for high and low with a chance
- 25:55Speaker 5: of some snow, right, and so so we're gonna have
- 25:58Speaker 5: some decent days in there mixed with some like not
- 26:00Speaker 5: great days. So that's why I'm giving it kind of
- 26:01Speaker 5: like a six seven. I think the decent days could
- 26:03Speaker 5: be good. The days that aren't going to be great
- 26:05Speaker 5: aren't going to be good. You know, so kind of
- 26:08Speaker 5: balance this out, which was like ten, but but but
- 26:11Speaker 5: we're gonna go six or seven.
- 26:12Speaker 1: We got to be realistic too. But I think that
- 26:14Speaker 1: gives everyone a game plan on what you're doing. And
- 26:16Speaker 1: I think there's some really good tangible pieces of of
- 26:19Speaker 1: a vice for the approach. And is there one last
- 26:22Speaker 1: thing that you would tell someone It could be It
- 26:24Speaker 1: could be anything, and we'll leave them with that.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 5: I mean, I think you know, this time of year,
- 26:30Speaker 5: if you don't feel like you're you're if you feel
- 26:32Speaker 5: like you're not in them, You're not alone. There's a
- 26:34Speaker 5: lot of people who ain't in them, you know. So
- 26:38Speaker 5: that's the one thing. And then don't throw the season
- 26:41Speaker 5: away necessarily, but you know, start thinking about things for
- 26:46Speaker 5: next year. Also, like even if you like say like
- 26:48Speaker 5: for me, for example, I have a lot of pressure
- 26:49Speaker 5: in my state gun seasons getting ready to open, you know,
- 26:52Speaker 5: So I'm gonna go hunt a spot that admittedly I
- 26:55Speaker 5: had an opportunity to shoot her in October, so I'm
- 26:57Speaker 5: going to kind of go back there, but I haven't
- 27:00Speaker 5: been able to hunt this spot a.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Whole lot just historically.
- 27:02Speaker 5: It was kind of a newer spot to me, so
- 27:04Speaker 5: part of it is like, yeah, I think it's a
- 27:05Speaker 5: good opportunity I can get away from people. But also
- 27:07Speaker 5: it's like, man, I can grab some intel, right, I
- 27:09Speaker 5: can kind of figure out how it hunts. I can
- 27:10Speaker 5: kind of figure out what the wind is going to
- 27:12Speaker 5: do with the thermals are.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Going to do that.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Way, when I go to hunt it next year, I
- 27:15Speaker 5: have a little bit more data, right, So I try
- 27:17Speaker 5: to use some of these hunts where where the season
- 27:19Speaker 5: gets tough and have the silver lining be Man, It's
- 27:22Speaker 5: just part of the learning process and I'm either going
- 27:24Speaker 5: to fill a tag or I'm going to learn something today,
- 27:26Speaker 5: and that's kind of my approach.
- 27:28Speaker 1: I love it, well, Clint, I appreciate it. Everyone go
- 27:31Speaker 1: fallow along with the remainder of your season over at
- 27:33Speaker 1: truth from the stand. Appreciate it.
- 27:36Speaker 4: Appreciate it, buddy.
- 27:37Speaker 1: All right, we have Christopher with mobile Hunter. How are
- 27:41Speaker 1: we doing pretty good?
- 27:42Speaker 4: How about yourself?
- 27:44Speaker 1: We're doing great. It's we're on the bottom of the
- 27:47Speaker 1: ninth year in November, and there's a lot of guys
- 27:50Speaker 1: that probably are a little nervous, a little anxious with
- 27:54Speaker 1: maybe how their season has gone up to this point.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Maybe they had an opportunity that didn't go together, or
- 27:58Speaker 1: maybe they're still chasing a ghost or what seems like
- 28:01Speaker 1: a ghost. How how has the activity been here in
- 28:05Speaker 1: the last seven days for you, whether it's from camera
- 28:08Speaker 1: scouting or anything else.
- 28:09Speaker 4: It's been pretty good.
- 28:10Speaker 6: Cameras have been fairly good about seven days ago or so,
- 28:18Speaker 6: and in the last few they've kind of cut, you know,
- 28:20Speaker 6: trickled down a little bit. But I am seeing more
- 28:25Speaker 6: scraping happening now, so we're we're starting to trickle back
- 28:29Speaker 6: to that.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Yeah, that's it's the chaos is over and
- 28:34Speaker 1: now it's uh, you know, maybe just getting a little
- 28:36Speaker 1: bit more into maybe more controlled environment, maybe not, but
- 28:40Speaker 1: you know, I guess that's that's up for debate. But
- 28:43Speaker 1: as far as kind of looking here in the next
- 28:47Speaker 1: seven days, will you like you'll be hunting in Ohio?
- 28:51Speaker 1: And does when does your guys firearm season start?
- 28:54Speaker 6: Firearms season starts here in Ohio, Uh, not tomorrow, but
- 28:58Speaker 6: the next Monday, December one through seventh, and so I'll
- 29:03Speaker 6: actually be hunting here in Kentucky.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I still have my tag.
- 29:07Speaker 4: There as well.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Okay, so opening day in Ohio December first, what's your
- 29:14Speaker 1: tentative strategy right now, Like, do you have a tentative
- 29:17Speaker 1: game plan?
- 29:19Speaker 6: Opening Day is going to be kind of tricky because
- 29:21Speaker 6: they're calling for rain Monday and Tuesday and into Wednesday.
- 29:27Speaker 6: So opening day might be out if it's a wash,
- 29:32Speaker 6: but if it's if it's just going to be light,
- 29:35Speaker 6: I'm going to be sitting where I've got one headed
- 29:39Speaker 6: up out of a drainage back to bed on private,
- 29:42Speaker 6: so I'll be looking to cut him off with a gun,
- 29:46Speaker 6: of course, so I get to it's gonna be a
- 29:48Speaker 6: little easier to play that win.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's that's certainly one of the benefits of
- 29:54Speaker 1: having firearm season year. Yes, a lot more forgiving of
- 29:57Speaker 1: a situation and set up than you don't have to
- 29:59Speaker 1: be right on top of them. As far as looking,
- 30:03Speaker 1: let's say for the back part of that that you know,
- 30:07Speaker 1: a couple of days of that first season opening, a
- 30:09Speaker 1: couple of days obviously, as soon as those guns go off,
- 30:11Speaker 1: it seems like things are constantly changing. There's a lot
- 30:14Speaker 1: of unknown pressure. I mean, there's just a lot of
- 30:16Speaker 1: chaos in the woods. With that being said, are you
- 30:19Speaker 1: just still trying to hunt traditional deer movement for the
- 30:22Speaker 1: most part, or are you trying to factor in pressure
- 30:26Speaker 1: that maybe hadn't been there, you know, this week for example.
- 30:29Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean after opening day of GUN, I'm pretty
- 30:33Speaker 6: much gonna be relying on heavy cover. I still think
- 30:37Speaker 6: that there's plenty of good movement that we don't see
- 30:42Speaker 6: from the bigger deer this upcoming week of Thanksgiving and
- 30:45Speaker 6: then into Gun and so you know, I really think
- 30:49Speaker 6: that you've got to be where they're gonna be though,
- 30:52Speaker 6: like always right, and that's going to be in the thickest,
- 30:56Speaker 6: nastiest stuff because they're going to be looking to get
- 30:58Speaker 6: away from body.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that's really good advice from the perspective
- 31:04Speaker 1: of go where there's not pressure and good cover or
- 31:09Speaker 1: less pressure and good cover is kind of what your
- 31:11Speaker 1: strategy is. As far as for Kentucky for example, if
- 31:15Speaker 1: you buzz down in Kentucky, we're on the We're I always,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I always feel hesitant to categorize you know, the rut
- 31:23Speaker 1: in general, but you can call it post r you
- 31:24Speaker 1: call it the back end of the bell curve for sure.
- 31:27Speaker 1: But going to Kentucky for example, what would be you know,
- 31:30Speaker 1: top of mind for trying to get set up on
- 31:31Speaker 1: a target deer with a lot of like it's this,
- 31:35Speaker 1: We're in an awkward transition of the season, is how
- 31:37Speaker 1: I look at it.
- 31:38Speaker 6: It is very awkward, and it is very difficult in
- 31:41Speaker 6: Kentucky because literally minutes ago, well I guess I shouldn't
- 31:45Speaker 6: speak in time, but Kentucky rifle season has ended. So
- 31:52Speaker 6: now we're looking at a bunch of highly pressured deer.
- 31:58Speaker 6: But today I had a gorgeous mid forties ten point
- 32:02Speaker 6: at two forty five pm cruising around in a hub
- 32:06Speaker 6: like they're they're still doing it man. And so for me,
- 32:12Speaker 6: I'm going to be set up fairly close to that
- 32:15Speaker 6: hub scrape where I can get into cover because that's
- 32:19Speaker 6: probably where he's gonna ultimately be, and I'll be playing
- 32:23Speaker 6: the leeward side of a hill more than likely, where
- 32:26Speaker 6: he can cruise within cover and do his thing without
- 32:30Speaker 6: you know, worry of getting killed. Hopefully I can change that.
- 32:35Speaker 6: And then of course, you know, looking for ladies.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, and when you say hubs, just for people
- 32:42Speaker 1: that maybe are super familiar with that with that terminology.
- 32:44Speaker 1: When I picture a hub, I picture a hub like
- 32:46Speaker 1: towards the bottom or sense pulling down into Is that okay?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Is that kind of how that setup is.
- 32:50Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, and that's so not to go too nerdy
- 32:54Speaker 6: on you, but that's only going to play out if
- 32:57Speaker 6: I have a lighter wind. If we've got high wins,
- 33:01Speaker 6: they will suck and blow into every part of that hub.
- 33:05Speaker 6: Then you can imagine and you're just gonna blow everything
- 33:07Speaker 6: out of it. So I'm looking for, like, you know,
- 33:11Speaker 6: no higher than a seven or eight mile an hour
- 33:13Speaker 6: wind during the day, and then I'm looking forward to
- 33:15Speaker 6: drop off the table that last ninety minutes a lighter
- 33:18Speaker 6: so that way they're playing the thermal game the whole
- 33:22Speaker 6: way through.
- 33:24Speaker 1: What's your you know, I feel like it's always that
- 33:28Speaker 1: it's interesting because the October, you know, hunting mornings in
- 33:31Speaker 1: October hot hot button debate by many folks, and I
- 33:34Speaker 1: feel like we're probably creeping into maybe not quite yet,
- 33:37Speaker 1: but we're getting closer to the debate of hunting in
- 33:40Speaker 1: the mornings in December for example, or the very back
- 33:42Speaker 1: part of November. Where do you stand on that?
- 33:47Speaker 6: So with a gun, it's a no brainer to me,
- 33:49Speaker 6: because you got to have time in the stand. If
- 33:50Speaker 6: you can cover ground, do it with a bow. I
- 33:54Speaker 6: think it's very situational. But at the end of the day.
- 33:58Speaker 6: Let's say you've got a you know, a west facing hillside,
- 34:02Speaker 6: west facing.
- 34:03Speaker 4: Hub something like that.
- 34:05Speaker 6: You're you're talking about a completely different uh, you know,
- 34:09Speaker 6: thermal game on that side of the mountain than you
- 34:11Speaker 6: are on the eastern side where the sun's coming up,
- 34:14Speaker 6: so the deer might favor that side. The other thing
- 34:17Speaker 6: to take into account here is once you get a
- 34:20Speaker 6: week or two past gun season. You know, while this
- 34:24Speaker 6: is a very awkward time, there's a couple of really
- 34:27Speaker 6: good things that are going on here. One, all the
- 34:31Speaker 6: babies are going to go home and they're gonna quit,
- 34:34Speaker 6: so you're gonna have way less people in the woods after,
- 34:39Speaker 6: you know, the next week or so two weeks, depending
- 34:42Speaker 6: on what state I'm in Kentucky, I'll probably not see
- 34:45Speaker 6: a human being unless it's muzzleloader season, right. So the
- 34:49Speaker 6: other cool thing that's going to happen is we're going
- 34:51Speaker 6: to have some of those late dropping reds, you know,
- 34:55Speaker 6: throwing acorns, and you're gonna be talking about a southern
- 35:00Speaker 6: aisle feed tree situation going on.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Hmm, that's an awesome point. What about for someone that's
- 35:06Speaker 1: struggling and maybe maybe there's season because a lot of
- 35:10Speaker 1: a lot of the Midwest states. Their firearm seasons have
- 35:12Speaker 1: already been in effect here, and you know, obviously the
- 35:15Speaker 1: deer have been pressured, and you don't want to be
- 35:17Speaker 1: pressuring deer as well. But do you want to get
- 35:20Speaker 1: permission people permission to go and do some scouting and
- 35:23Speaker 1: try to find the spot where they need to be
- 35:25Speaker 1: or are you.
- 35:27Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, you have I shouldn't say you have to scout.
- 35:32Speaker 6: You know, there's no blanket statement that really I could
- 35:36Speaker 6: lay down for anything, But I just feel like scouting
- 35:40Speaker 6: is so important and going in there and finding whether
- 35:43Speaker 6: it be feed sign or you know, right now we're
- 35:46Speaker 6: going to be headed back to food to bed and
- 35:50Speaker 6: you're going to find a lot of deer sign that
- 35:53Speaker 6: won't be rut based, but it'll be super super important.
- 35:57Speaker 6: And the best thing you could find, especially this time
- 36:00Speaker 6: year with all the moisture on the ground, is a
- 36:02Speaker 6: big track. You go cut a big track. That's enough.
- 36:07Speaker 6: If you can glass or something from there.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Do that.
- 36:10Speaker 6: It's okay to play it a little safe, but don't
- 36:14Speaker 6: just stay out. In my opinion, just because I feel
- 36:17Speaker 6: like scouting is always going to be king and I'd
- 36:20Speaker 6: rather go out swinging and blow him out and let
- 36:23Speaker 6: him come back, because at the end of the day,
- 36:25Speaker 6: we know that if a buck is in a certain area,
- 36:28Speaker 6: he's there because it works, and he's probably there this
- 36:31Speaker 6: time of year every single year, and he's doing that
- 36:35Speaker 6: because it works. So I'm gonna go in there one time.
- 36:40Speaker 6: I might hang cameras, I might not, but we're gonna
- 36:43Speaker 6: go in there, find the food, maybe try to cut
- 36:45Speaker 6: a big track, some big scat or something. And you know,
- 36:49Speaker 6: if we're lucky enough to find a good scrape or
- 36:51Speaker 6: any kind of buck sign, great, But the best thing
- 36:54Speaker 6: you could do is cut a big track and then
- 36:57Speaker 6: you know, find him in a CRP fee standing beanfield,
- 37:01Speaker 6: cornfit whatever wherever the food is, or on a ridge
- 37:05Speaker 6: and glass him up and you have everything you could
- 37:08Speaker 6: ever want.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that, all right. So next seven days,
- 37:13Speaker 1: Thanksgiving week, we flip the calendar into December on a
- 37:16Speaker 1: scale one to ten, ten being the best week of
- 37:18Speaker 1: the year, one being one of the worst weeks of
- 37:20Speaker 1: the year. What do you think the deer potential activity,
- 37:24Speaker 1: whatever you want to say, will be from one to ten,
- 37:27Speaker 1: ten being the best.
- 37:28Speaker 6: And we're talking about the week after Thanksgiving.
- 37:30Speaker 1: We're talking November twenty fourth or fifth to or excuse me,
- 37:35Speaker 1: the twenty sixth to December third.
- 37:40Speaker 4: For big deer.
- 37:42Speaker 6: I'm going to go at least.
- 37:45Speaker 4: I'm going to go in eight point five. Man, some of.
- 37:49Speaker 6: The biggest deer get killed, you know, right right in
- 37:54Speaker 6: the week of Thanksgiving, the first few days a gun
- 37:56Speaker 6: week here in Ohio.
- 37:58Speaker 4: So I'm going to say in eight point five.
- 38:01Speaker 1: All right, I like it. Well, good luck to you
- 38:03Speaker 1: Christopher in Ohio and Kentucky, and hopefully conditions cooperate for
- 38:10Speaker 1: the Buckeye State. If people want to follow along with
- 38:12Speaker 1: what you have going on, where's the best place to
- 38:14Speaker 1: do that?
- 38:15Speaker 6: You can just check out the man, there's like a
- 38:19Speaker 6: million different platforms.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Now.
- 38:20Speaker 6: We've got the Mobile Hunter podcast and the Mobile Hunters
- 38:24Speaker 6: x BO. Those are the two best places to follow
- 38:27Speaker 6: along with what we got going on. And as always, man,
- 38:31Speaker 6: I really appreciate it.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Brother.
- 38:32Speaker 1: All right, thank you so much, good luck, thank you
- 38:35Speaker 1: all right everyone there, you guys have it. I hope
- 38:37Speaker 1: you guys have an awesome Thanksgiving. Get to enjoy it
