- 0:32SPEAKER_01: I'm Tyler Dunne.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: That's Bob McGinn.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: We're back, baby.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: We're back, Bob.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: Another episode, another season.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: The Ty and Bob Pod right here.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Go Long.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: Golongtd.com.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: Every episode available to our paid subscribers.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: If you're new here, this is... Gosh, what, Bob?
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: We usually go for an hour and a half, two hours, sometimes longer when you're...
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: He's aggressively shaking his head.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: On the NFC North.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: So we would like to view this podcast,
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: this show, as something different than everything else out there.
- 1:13SPEAKER_01: Bob, again, of course, has covered the NFL since 1979.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Is that right, Bob?
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: 79?
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: 1979.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: One of a kind.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: Pro Football Hall of Fame.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Still at it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: 74 going on 34.
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, sorry.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: Was I not supposed to say your age?
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: We'll edit that out.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Still drinking that coffee with this straw here, T?
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Coffee.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: You got me on the coffee and the microwave.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I've mentioned it a few times.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: We've got three kids.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: It requires microwaved coffee.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: It just gets cold.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: That's just how mornings work.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: Weekday, weekend, I'm with you on the need to zap it for a good 30 seconds.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: How long do you zap your coffee?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Well, this one, I brewed it up on my wife's pot over there.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And then 70 seconds, I miked it immediately.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: So it was scalding hot.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: That scalding hot coffee
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: creates the molten lava takes, I suppose.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: I stopped short at the straw, though.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: I don't understand drinking coffee with a straw.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: You're going to have to refresh the viewers,
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: the listeners on the merits of such a ridiculous way to drink coffee, Bob.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: So my daughter, Maggie Dame, owner of Dame Salon and Spy in De Pere, Wisconsin.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: When Maggie sees me leaving a Starbucks with her or something,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: with a straw hanging out the top,
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: those green straws, she said, Dad, that's really a bad look.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: She's right.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: It is.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Is it the entry?
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: You're probably the person that sued McDonald's over the coffee, aren't you, for being too hot?
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: You took a sip.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: It spilled all over you.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: And you suit him.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Come like it hot.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: I love McDonald's for that reason.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: You can drink it for half an hour when you're driving, you know?
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: But I'm seeing the straw keeps it very meticulously narrow, confined.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: You can sip it like a four-year-old, you know, sips juice in the morning.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: I'm just trying, I'm trying to understand the straw.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: You protect your teeth from getting all that brown stuff on there.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's...
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, I think you just shut me the hell up, Bob.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Jeez.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I've seen your teeth.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Your teeth are white.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: Your teeth are pristine.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: My teeth, the dentist is wondering, what in the hell is going on?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Now, my teeth are fine, but they're not Bob McGinn's teeth.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: And it's coffee.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: It's because I drink too much coffee.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: I stand corrected.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: You're owning me a few minutes into this show.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: You know what?
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: If you can put up with the ridiculous look of a grown man drinking coffee through
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: a straw for those health benefits,
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: it's worth it, I think.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: All right, I'm going to try to recombobulate here.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, this is a lot of fun.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: I've known Bob for ages.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: He's more than just a former coworker.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: You know, one of my best friends.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Always called him my Green Bay dad out there when I covered the Packers,
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: More good times than we can count.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: The early days of podcasting, Bob.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: We did that.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I was out there in 2011 when I started.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: I think we started our Packers podcast in 2012.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And there weren't many podcasts around back then.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: So it's been...
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Just such a riot, kind of rebooting this when you joined Golong in 2021.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I mentioned it at the site,
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: but Bob will be not only doing the Tyne Bob Pod,
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: NFC North Talk every single week for subscribers,
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: but also writing your McGinn Files columns,
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: looking back at what the scouts and the execs and coaches thought about players
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: that we see today when they came out of college.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And what I love about those two,
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Bob, is you're picking up the phone and you're calling more people about these guys.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: Excellent story on Leonard Williams last week.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: And then probably the number one reason that Bob McGinn will be bringing in readers,
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: subscribers, listeners, the draft series in all of its glory rages on, baby.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So you can expect that in the spring.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: That is right here at Golong.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: The NFC North, or shall we BS a little longer?
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Anything on your mind?
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: It's been forever since we've done this, Bob.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: Anything in your world that you got to touch on?
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: People have to know what you're up to.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I went to a football game Saturday afternoon.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Noon start, Big Fox kickoff, whatever.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Oklahoma, five and a half point favorite at Michigan.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Bought a seat with my old college roommate the night before.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Bought them on Friday night.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: The tickets had collapsed after the embarrassing performance
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: against Western Michigan the week before.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: The face value on those tickets We're on the goal line on the Oklahoma side, row 30.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You know, they have different premier pricing for the crummy games.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: They have one price in the middle and the top.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: That would have been in the top tier.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: 235.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: I was stunned.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: So we bought them 51 bucks plus 16 fees, total of 67.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Boy, people take a bath, these season ticket holders, you know?
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, one bad performance and the bottom falls out of the ticket market.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: That was astounding.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: 80 degrees, humidity about 70, 72%, it was hot.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: But the one thing, every play we stood and every 3.05 we sat.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: What's at 3.05, Tyler?
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: That's when they roll out the commercial break timer and those things start
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: at three minutes, five seconds.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: That's how long the commercial break is.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Some are $2.30, but most of them are $3.05.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: So then everybody sits down, and when the $3.05 ends, you stand up.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: And you're jammed in that place.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: You can't get out.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, you are just packed in there.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: It was $111,000.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: It's hard to be a fan, T. I learned that.
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: Mmm.
- 7:45SPEAKER_01: Plus...
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: We haven't had a chance to even talk on the phone about that Western Michigan Hail Mary finish.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Are you ashamed?
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, that was really sad.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Can you really – I don't know what was sad
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: or like almost losing that game
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: to Western Michigan or the big blue faithful rushing the field
- 8:03SPEAKER_01: for beating Western Michigan.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: I blame that on the freshman.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: First game, you know, they don't know what's up.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, that was horrid, no question.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Their performance was more horrid.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I think the officials got it right.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, how can you criticize?
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: They know all this stuff, all the technology they have access to.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, they call it the way technology showed it to be.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Would it go the other way?
- 8:31SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: If it was the other way around, would they really put
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: one second back on the clock?
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, I don't buy that for one second.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: I believe in authority and the officials, Tyler.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: I really don't.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: But in these games, I do.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: That was in the Big Ten office.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: You're saying.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, the Big Ten office.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: They're going to be very unbiased as they take a look at this.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: There was about eight to ten thousand Oklahoma fans.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: They were the nicest people in the world.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: They were all around us and they were great people.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Nobody really too rowdy.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: They were crushed with their 17-10 defeat.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I said, hey, what are you worried about?
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: You beat the blue last year down in Norman.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: It's a 1-1 split, man.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: Take it and leave it.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So it was a really good game.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: But it is tough to watch.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: Three hours, 35 minutes.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Hot.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: A lot of stoppages.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: It's brutal.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: College football has a lot of problems on its hands, don't they?
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: That's one that gets lost in the sauce here.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: But I felt the same way watching these games at home.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: Even the great one Saturday night, Ohio State, Texas, it just lingered forever.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Is it going to tune people out, you think?
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Is this going to be a problem for them over time?
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I really don't.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: I
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: think it's a better game to watch on TV than the NFL.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: You got bands, you got pageantry, you got more emotion, you got maybe less gambling.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think the college game's pretty good right now, Tyler.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: Unless you're in the stadium.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: But I mean, at home, I think it's pretty darn good.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Especially me, where I never see a commercial.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Start that baby an hour late and catch up at the end.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Commercial crew.
- 10:37SPEAKER_01: So yeah, those...
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: Long time,
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Bob McGinn fans,
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: as they all know,
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: listening,
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: you very rarely will watch a football game when the football game is being played.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: You record it.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Never.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: Maybe never.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: When's the last time you even watched a football game live when it was happening?
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: One game every year.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Pat and I watch the Super Bowl together live.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And that's it.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Everything else, tune in an hour late.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: My kids know never to call me up or email me or anything.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I don't text, so they're not going to screw it up for me there.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: And yeah,
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: I generally,
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I never know what happened and I watch it on my terms with no commercials.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's incredible.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: That's a trait I wish I could adopt.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Everyone could adopt.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: You're not going to abide by Fox and CBS and NBC and ESPN and Amazon.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: You're going to watch it on your terms.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: Not distracted.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: Not reading a tweet.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Hell, not reading a text.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: None of it.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: Have you ever been?
- 11:49SPEAKER_01: When's the last time you were spoiled that somebody did know McGinn Law
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: and violated these terms?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Sometimes if I tune into a game maybe and there have been the local sports show on,
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: say,
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: an NBC affiliate and they're just discussing, say,
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: a Tiger game I was going to watch or some game, I might hear the score that way.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: But in terms of Pat breaking my kids, no, it's been years.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Well, Let's talk.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: I was in Minneapolis for Packers, Vikings.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Started
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: off boring.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: You wrote a great column, Tyler, a great column.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, thank you.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: You're dang right.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: And your thing on Sunday, setting forth a mission for Golong this year, exceptional, Tyler.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Proud to be working with you.
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: Hey, the pride, the honor, the pleasure, all of it's here, Bob.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I'm just thrilled that you're a part of the mission.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Jim Monis is a part of it.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: And yeah, it's all there at the site if people want to check it out.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: It's meant every word.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: I think like I wrote, I mean, these could be really dark times.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: They are dark times in sports media for a million reasons.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: Super intelligence is just going to kill us all within 10 years.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: So it may all be moot, but yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: How, what's real, what's fake, it's blurred, it's...
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't want to get on the soapbox.
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: People want to listen to the NFC North talk here.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: It was a, like I said though, it was
- 13:43SPEAKER_01: kind of a snoozer early on.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Packers, Vikes,
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: no Kyler Murray, Carson Wentz is rusty, the Packers are settling for field goals.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: This was on the heels of Bill's Texans.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: So inside of our game day chat, we were getting into that game and that's high flying.
- 14:03SPEAKER_01: That's a shootout 36-31 and watching the Bears on the side, all the points scored in that one.
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: That was an insane game that we'll touch on as well.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: And then all of a sudden Packers Vikings just spontaneously combust and
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: The Vikings just blow the brakes off the Packers in ways nobody saw coming.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: I didn't see it coming.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: We can discuss and debate the fourth and one decision to go for it,
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: the call itself, the execution.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: But yeah, as I wrote, I just feel like this is a very psychologically broken Packers team.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: Isn't it funny?
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: And I actually believe it.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: When coaches say no two teams are the same, Like the 2025 Packers aren't the 2026 Packers.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: I remember Mike McCarthy always harping on that back in our journal Sentinel days.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: And it's true.
- 14:56SPEAKER_01: There's six, seven months in between these seasons.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: So much happens.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Guys leave.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: Guys are signed.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: But when a head coach has been around for eight years,
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: his way of doing things is embedded into the fabric of your culture.
- 15:14SPEAKER_01: Day in, day out.
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: It's the same voice.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: The same messaging.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: I had heard he's tried, to his credit, Matt LaFleur has tried to emphasize finishing.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: He's got a very specific,
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: detailed instruction on how to finish a meeting, finish a drive, finish a practice.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: They've emphasized it all offseason,
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: but isn't that, I get it, week one lies and there's 16 more games to go, right?
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: The season isn't over.
- 15:44SPEAKER_01: But that's what's demoralizing for the Green Bay Packers.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: This felt like last season all over again.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: When they're losing games,
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: when they didn't even punt,
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: when they're getting just absolutely humiliated,
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: steamrolled,
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: Embarrassed by the Baltimore Ravens for 300 yards on the ground at Lambeau Field.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: To, oh, by the way, blowing the game with the onside kick to the Bears in the regular season.
- 16:12SPEAKER_01: And then blowing the 21-3 lead to the Bears in the playoffs.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: And the 10-0 loss, or the 10-0 lead over Cleveland.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: You blow that game.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: There's so many games we can pick and choose from.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: And I mentioned it in the column.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: But, I mean, Rob Reichel, our former co-worker, he had the stat of the year.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: On the odds of the Packers losing these games.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: For those who missed it, here it is.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: LaFleur's Packers had a 99% chance of winning versus the Browns.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: A 99% chance of beating the Bears in the regular season.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: 96% chance in the playoffs.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: In addition to the 90% odds Sunday against Minnesota.
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: The chances of losing all four of those games...
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Per Rob, with his math, one in 2.5 million.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: And you know what, Bob?
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Honestly, a buddy of mine pointed this out after he read the column.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: He's like,
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: the stat is actually worse because the stat assumes that all four
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: of those outcomes are independent from each other.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: When really, you've got the same problem in all four of these games.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: The way this team's being coached.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: What makes it tricky,
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: and we're going to get into it,
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: blow for blow, play for play, player to player, as Bob always does.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Don't take points off the board.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: There's a really good argument to make for that.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Go up by eight on the road and play this thing out.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I think more than just like a specific moment or a decision that you could point to
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: for Matt LaFleur, it's almost it's in their heads.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: It's in their hearts.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Something about this team.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: The way they're constructed, the going gets tough and they let their foot off the gas.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: They get discouraged.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: They get demoralized.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: They fold.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: It's a team that folds when things start to go wrong.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: How do you fix that?
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: That's why I wrote what I wrote after the season.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: He got an extension.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: The GM got an extension.
- 18:25SPEAKER_01: You're going to get into the personnel.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: There's, there's, Quite a chicken or the egg debate to have there.
- 18:31SPEAKER_01: There's there's there's something with this team's mentality that is off
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: because it's the same shit again.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: So let me just make a couple of things that I could think of.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: So he's got a new off defensive coordinator and he's got a new special teams coordinator.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: OK, so those are changes.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: And the other thing when we think back on last year and what I've now,
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Tyler, I'm not in that locker room and I've never even met Matt LaFleur.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: OK, so I'm not going to.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Make global statements about their program.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: But I have met Gutekunst, of course, and talked to him a few times.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Remember late in the year, the composition of this roster, he wants athletes.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: And I went through all the newcomers again and got all the exact height,
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: weight 40 times from pro days and combine and vertical jump.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: He wants athletes.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And the other thing this roster is known for, not a lot of smart people.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: And in pressure moments, second,
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: fourth quarter of games on the road when you've got a big lead and you're trying
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: to cling to it, maybe that comes back to bite them.
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: There's not a whole lot of bright people on that ball club compared to other NFL teams.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: We went through all those numbers last year of all the Wunderlich scores I had.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: That's only one measure of intelligence to play the game.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: But it is an important one.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: That's why it's been around here for 180 years since Paul Brown.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: So that's the one thing I would say.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: It's what he looks for in players.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: The athlete, and he disregards the mental to a degree.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: That's where it gets interesting because I think this team has needed more attitude,
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: violence, killer instinct.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: And I feel like Brian Gutekind has done a better job of finding that kind of player
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: than his predecessor.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: It's taken him a while.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: We cover those teams.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: I started in 2011 or 2015.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: You get into the playoffs, having the talent, having the quarterback, something's off.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: You got Mike Daniels just begging anybody to please punch somebody in the mouth.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: T.J. Lang on the other side.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: You touch Aaron Rodgers.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: I'm knocking your ass out.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: And there wasn't much else outside of that in terms of just nasty dudes in a nasty game.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: I think they have those guys.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: And if that comes at the expense of a lower Wunderlich score and
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: a little less intelligence, I would take that.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: I'd take the former.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: I want some meanness, you know?
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: And I feel like they've got those players.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: It could cost you in some big moments, and it has.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: I feel like quarterback Jordan Love, you're going to get into him up until the end.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: Phenomenal against this pressure.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: I thought he played a great game.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: He's got a chance to be one of the very best in the sport.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: All right,
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: anyone who still questions if this guy's any good,
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: as I wrote, a toad who should work for the former quarterback's PR department because
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: that debate is over.
- 21:52SPEAKER_01: It's done.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Jordan Love has got a real chance to be elite.
- 21:56SPEAKER_01: And that was Brian Goodkins taking the chance, drafting him.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: The trade for Micah Parsons.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: That's a move that you never see in Green Bay.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: The picks, the contract.
- 22:06SPEAKER_01: He's not on the field right now.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: And it shows.
- 22:10SPEAKER_01: But he got that guy.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: And then fleshing it out with the Edger and Coopers, the Javon Bullards, these kind of players.
- 22:17SPEAKER_01: It's what they've needed on defense where I do think the GM warrants some criticism.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And you're going to get into it.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: The offensive line was a mess in this game.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: They're missing a few guys.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I talked to those Viking players.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: They knew that they were under manning.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: Brian Flores, you look at how much he pressured.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: He sent the hounds,
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: especially with six, seven minutes to go in the game when it was ready to be had.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it's not perfect.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I feel like the talent's on this roster to contend for a championship.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: Eight years of the same coach.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Hey, mate, it's a long season.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: One weekend.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: We'll stop short of making really bold and declarative statements.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: It's not pretty, though.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: It's looking like last season's edition of the Packers.
- 23:09SPEAKER_01: The good news for them, they got the Jets and the Falcons on deck.
- 23:13SPEAKER_01: A couple get-right games, if there ever were get-right games.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: Where do you want to start with all this, Bob?
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Unless you got some more thoughts on the larger picture.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: No, um...
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: You can have physical slash violent and smart.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: You can have that if that's your priority.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: If it's not, well, you let one of them go.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: And this organization has let a very important factor go.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: So let's look.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: This was a fiercely fought game.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: Openers are guys haven't hit in eight months, you know, basically.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: And, uh, I thought Green Bay was holding up physically, particularly on defense.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: They knocked the quarterback out with a kind of a questionable hit.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: That could be a fine.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And OK, so they're in pretty good shape.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Let's look at the wide receivers.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: They lose Dobbs and they lose.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Who's the other?
- 24:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, Wicks.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Dontavian Wicks.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: But they got a bunch of good players still.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: I'm not sold on Golden.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: All his numbers were garbage time at the end.
- 24:27SPEAKER_00: He didn't get upfield on that third and eight hook.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Got a mouthful from LeFleur, tried to walk away from him on the sideline.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: That wasn't a real good look.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: So Golden, I'm not convinced where he's going to go with his career.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Watson's a big guy, you know.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: He doesn't give them the possession dimension that Wicks did and Dobbs did.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's just kind of – he's big and his routes have improved since he came
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: from North Dakota State a lot,
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: but yet he's a deep threat, and that's what they're using him.
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, 65 yards after the catch on the 81 touchdown, just unreal striding through that thing.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: Took that lob away from Murphy for 33, outstanding, and the touchdown on the rollout.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Kind of a speed rollout, and he beat him to the corner.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Reed had a non-game, didn't do much, had one drop against the Blitz.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And that's their wideouts, right?
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: Sky Moore played.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: He's the little guy.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: Moore had, I don't know, 19 snaps.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: He's five and nine and a half, 191.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: He ran 4-4-4.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: He's got huge hands, 10 and a quarter, second round pick by the Chiefs.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: All right, the tight ends, Kraft is back, get him the ball.
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: The guy's really good, right, Tyler?
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: He had the corner route against that zone, I mean, 30 yards, and they leave him all alone.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Like, there were people alone against this blitz stuff when you can handle it.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: And they did a good job on the first half against the Blitz.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: people are running free and you don't want Kraft running three trying to tackle
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: that guy and carousing through the middle of the zone.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: Not fun.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: 23 yards on that.
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: He had one bad run in this game against Turner.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the offense.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, and Redmond now.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: He's their blocker.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: 21 snaps.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Kind of replaces who that John Fitzpatrick.
- 26:35SPEAKER_00: Um, Redmond, now he gave up a sack to Turner later.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Second play goes in motion and made a nice lead on a good running play on Turner.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: I'm kind of impressed with him.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: He's a tough guy and everybody needs a big blocking tight end nowadays.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Their other receiving tight end is Jonu Smith.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: This is his 10th year.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: He's only six, two and a half.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: He looks to me.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Almost like a wide out.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: He's 247 coming out.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: He might be 230, 225 now.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: He ran 463 coming out a decade ago.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Wunderlich took it twice, 12 and 16.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: It's kind of a willing blocker for his unlikely looking tight end size.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the offensive line.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously this is a terrible place to be opening day.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: Noise like you can't believe.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: I was only there once, Tyler, but the noise was bad.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: You were there.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 27:44SPEAKER_01: Once it got tuned up, it took a while.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I mean, when Kyler Murray was down, good cast of Paul over U.S. Bank Stadium.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: Think about it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: The months and months of buildup and hope and hype and has reset many times
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: for this Vikings team.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Boom, he's down.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: First quarter, it was quiet.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And then, yeah,
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: once that flurry started in the fourth quarter, you couldn't hear yourself think.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: I love the open press box, too.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: You really get a feel for it all.
- 28:19SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 28:21SPEAKER_00: I like the Metrodome, like the Superdome in New Orleans.
- 28:24SPEAKER_00: Yep, you're really part of it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's move from left to right.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: So let's start with Jordan Morgan.
- 28:31SPEAKER_00: Now, he's a left tackle in college.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Played guard in Green Bay the last two years, made some starts.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: All right, let's look at the guy because he did not play well.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: He's 6'5", 3'11".
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: He was a first round pick.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: This is his third year.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: He ran good, ran 5'07".
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: He's got good arm length.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: I don't think he plays to this, 34 and 3'8".
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Hands are huge, 10 and 7'8".
- 28:55SPEAKER_00: Wunderlich, bad, 11.
- 29:04SPEAKER_00: Really low.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: And you know,
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: when I've watched him now for two years in one game, I kind of see that in his play.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: 28 vert, 9-6 broad jump, led the tackles that year.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: 22 on the bench, not very good.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: All right, let's look at his day.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: In chronological order.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: Gave a knockdown on a bull rush by...
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: Dallas Turner had a false start,
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: overstepped and missed a pace,
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: a little backer on a run through minus two missed assignment.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: I think on a knockdown that went to Eric Wilson,
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: a flush to Turner,
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: a bad run against Redmond,
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: a knockdown to Turner on an up half a bad run against Wilson and a knockdown
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: against Turner.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: It's really a, really a poor performance.
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I think he was probably their worst lineman.
- 30:03SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: Rasheed Walker,
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: who is now starting for Carolina, and I saw that entire game, he played pretty good.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: He played the Rasheed we've seen the last couple of years.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: By the way, he had 11 on the test score as well.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Walker's clearly a better player than Jordan Morgan right now,
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: and they got to get this guy going,
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: man, because there's going to be a lot of rushers in this division, and
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Dallas Turner is a much, much improved player.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: His first year and a half, I didn't think he was going to make it.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: He was looking like a bust.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: And he had a field day against Wagner and others on that front.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: So Banks is injured.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: He doesn't play.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Aaron Banks is out.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: I don't know what his injury is, but Tyler, he wasn't very good last year either.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: Let's be real.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: And this is like his sixth year.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, six.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: All right, so Banks is out.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: They could have played the rookie who I think they liked, Jager Burton, center guard.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: They go with Jennings, a free agent, in his second year.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Jennings is just an eighth of an inch over 6'4", 323, 502.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: So the guy's athletic, 28 on the vert, arms 33.
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: Hands small, nine and a quarter.
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: He did 28 on the bench.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: He was undrafted.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: This is his third year, excuse me.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: All right, how'd he do?
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: First play gets knocked on his ass by Levi Drake Rodriguez.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: He missed Redmond for a bad run.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: He had a false start.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry to Redmond.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: He had half a bad run against Ingrams Dawkins.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: He had a bad run when he missed Ingrams Dawkins and he had a hurry against Cashman.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, it has to be expected.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: The guy's pushed out there in this cauldron and noise.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he wasn't an NFL starter.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was pretty poor.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: I mean, but I didn't expect much else from the guy.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: Although when you got, you got Belton who played guard his,
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: some of his rookie year.
- 32:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he started games there.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: You got Glover who's a guard.
- 32:30SPEAKER_00: And you got Burton who has played guard in college.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: They went with Jennings.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: He must be the best they got.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: I mean, these coaches, their lives, their jobs are at stake.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: They're playing the best people.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to center.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: Ryan, the guy that you know and interviewed last year, Tyler.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's huge.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: He's massive.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: He's mean.
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: I like all that stuff.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: He's 6'4 and a half, 323, ran 5-2-3 coming out.
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: He's got short arms, 32 and 3-8.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: They signed him for the big deal in March, three years, 33 mil.
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: All right, how'd he do?
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: He had a holding penalty against Jalen Redman.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: He had a half a knockdown on a stunt.
- 33:16SPEAKER_00: He gave up a sack to Rodriguez in 3.8.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: He got stuffed on a...
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Can't read it.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: He got stuffed on a run.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, on the sneak, the failed quarterback sneak, he got stuffed by Orange, the rookie.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: He wasn't very good either.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the right guard.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: That would be Monk.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Now, this guy played generally center at Duke.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure how much guard he's played.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: I kind of liked him a little bit.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: I saw him in his first two years.
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: He's 6'3".
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Now he's small for a guard.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: He's 6'3", 312.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: He looks small.
- 33:58SPEAKER_00: He runs good, 505.
- 34:00SPEAKER_00: He was a fifth-round pick, 25 on the Wunderlich.
- 34:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, on Jennings, I don't have his test score.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Athletically, jumps were okay.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Strong, 31.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Short-arm guy again.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: Short-arms right next to Ryan, same arm, 32 and 3'8", 10 on the hand.
- 34:20SPEAKER_00: Ryan, by the way, has huge hands, 11 and an eight, massive.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: So how was Monk?
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: You know, they pulled the guy.
- 34:28SPEAKER_00: They didn't pull Jennings.
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: They pulled Monk to the left, usually towards the boundary.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: He had a nice pull on Metellus, the safety gain of 14 early.
- 34:37SPEAKER_00: He gave up a knockdown to Rodriguez, a knockdown to Turner, a sack to Cashman.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: I want the listeners to realize that intentionally I didn't watch any exhibition game play.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's just, Tyler, you covered all that preseason stuff, exhibition.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we did it for six weeks, but it's an amateur hour, really, you know?
- 35:03SPEAKER_00: And these games, I don't even want to be influenced by looking at these guys against subs.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: And so I know I'm going on a little bit,
- 35:11SPEAKER_00: but I'm so excited to see the draft picks and to see guys we've never played
- 35:15SPEAKER_00: in feature roles before, guys who move from team to team.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: This is exciting to see these guys.
- 35:21SPEAKER_00: I spent extra time on these players and these tapes.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: All right, so now let's go to Monk.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: He gave up a sack to Cashman, gave up two knockdowns.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: I thought he was okay.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: Of the four, I'd say he might have been the best of the four so far.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: And then Zach Baco, Boelle, Boelle.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: He was their best.
- 35:45SPEAKER_00: He is their best player.
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: He's really good.
- 35:47SPEAKER_00: You never even noticed Van Ginkle the entire first half.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: He shut him down.
- 35:53SPEAKER_00: Zach, all right.
- 35:55SPEAKER_00: BB, the guy's a good football player.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: He gave one half bad run.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: That's all the negative I got.
- 36:01SPEAKER_00: He picked up a couple bumbles.
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: So, you know,
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: they did a lot of good blocking when they were making these big plays
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: that Love was getting away with early.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, J.J. Watt said Flores blitzed 84% the first half.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: And I'm thinking this front, are they going to get through 60 minutes?
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm thinking, wow, with this Motley crew.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: But no, you know, the shit hit the fan and accounts had to be payable.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: And they fell apart in that second half.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the running backs.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: So they don't have Josh Jacobs.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: So they're playing Brooks and Lloyd.
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: Brooks starts kind of surprisingly.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: He plays 38 snaps.
- 36:45SPEAKER_00: Lloyd plays 30.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Brooks, I thought he lost some weight, Tyler.
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: He looked quicker and better.
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: He came out at 219, 6006.
- 36:58SPEAKER_00: You know, he was slow, 463.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: But I don't know what he's listed at.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: He could be like 212 now.
- 37:06SPEAKER_00: His first attempt, I wrote, he's quicker.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: I thought it was Lloyd carrying the ball.
- 37:11SPEAKER_00: It was a 14-yard gain.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: He gave up one knockdown.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: He had problems in pass pro.
- 37:17SPEAKER_00: Knocked down a Turner, half a knockdown.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: He missed Cashman.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: He got killed by Cashman on that pick, and he had to knock down a Turner on a stunt.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Pass pro was really disappointing.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: That's his forte.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: That's why he made the club, I think, last year.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: They lose Emmanuel Wilson, so now they got Lloyd coming back.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Lloyd, as we remember, is a third round pick in 2024.
- 37:40SPEAKER_00: He's five, eight and a half, 221.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: He's thick, ran 445, nine on the Wunderlich.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Brooks had 17.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: How did Lloyd look?
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: He's a jump cutter, man.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: He's got ability.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: He showed it at USC.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: He's able to throttle down in traffic.
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: On a counter, he juked Murphy in the hole.
- 38:06SPEAKER_00: Burst around wide left, 14 yards.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, the guy's got ability.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Whether he's got any staying power, who knows?
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: Or if he can pass block, who knows?
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: But that was kind of interesting.
- 38:18SPEAKER_00: All right, now let's go to the quarterback.
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: He did some amazing things with that look of serenity on his face, Tyler.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: No, he wasn't perfect.
- 38:30SPEAKER_00: He missed Kraft on that seam early.
- 38:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: The touchdown to Watson, I mean, it was a risky ball, but it was a deadly throw, too.
- 38:40SPEAKER_00: Third and seven, throws off his back foot, hits Watson for 10.
- 38:44SPEAKER_00: He got it done.
- 38:45SPEAKER_00: Made a poor decision to golden on the sideline.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Fourth and two, he gets a false start with an abrupt movement.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Sean Hockley got him.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: He's got to get rid of that.
- 38:56SPEAKER_00: He's getting knocked down.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: He throws the ball away.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Wise veteran moves.
- 39:01SPEAKER_00: This is his fourth year starting.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: The interception, he throws one of those lob balls out there.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: It's a drop by Isaiah Rogers.
- 39:08SPEAKER_00: Should have been a pick.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: He throws another lob, 33 to Watson.
- 39:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's got this lob ball down, man.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: And a great touchdown drive before the half.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: Second half.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: He escapes Turner, hits Kraft for 13.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was a risky throw back across inside.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: He made it happen.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: He outruns Turner, hits Golan, gain of 13.
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: Beautiful thing.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: He caught Minnesota in a line shift.
- 39:34SPEAKER_00: They were forced to call timeout.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: Smart stuff.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: He's seen number 12.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: First play of the fourth quarter.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: It's loud as hell.
- 39:42SPEAKER_00: He steps up against pressure, finds golden for 42.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: I mean, big time.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: You know, Favre Rogers stuff.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 39:51SPEAKER_00: Shut the crowd up.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: Quarterback sneak.
- 39:55SPEAKER_00: Well, he failed.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: Six inches short.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Then he takes a strip sack.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: He takes another strip sack.
- 40:03SPEAKER_00: Pressure's all over him.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: He's got a hole onto the ball.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: There's no excuses for it.
- 40:08SPEAKER_00: Interception off his back foot to Harrison Smith.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Dropped it and deflected to a guy.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: And he sailed some balls later on in garbage time.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: He was the least of their problems.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: He played a really good game.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: Not a great one, but he played darn good.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: And he shows up.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: He's got a very bright future.
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: Tyler, that's it for me on the O.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: I thought your breakdown of the offensive line was spot on.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: I caught up with those Viking players afterward and asked Blake Cashman
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: about Green Bay's offensive line,
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: knowing that there were some injuries,
- 40:49SPEAKER_01: a little undermanned, some guys moving to different positions, all of that.
- 40:54SPEAKER_01: Here's what Blake Cashman said.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: Obviously,
- 40:58SPEAKER_01: we knew that they had some guys down,
- 40:59SPEAKER_01: but I'll say everybody for the most part can play in this league.
- 41:02SPEAKER_01: We respect every player, every opponent.
- 41:04SPEAKER_01: But like I said earlier, they did a good job trying to avoid that risk in the first half.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: But once we get a lead, it doesn't matter.
- 41:10SPEAKER_01: You have no choice, which is great for us.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: We practice and rep it and talk about it so much throughout the week
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: that everybody's on the same page, dialed in.
- 41:17SPEAKER_01: And I'm talking with Eric all the time because it's usually he's going or I'm going.
- 41:22SPEAKER_01: Eric Wilson, that is.
- 41:23SPEAKER_01: They're the two inside backers.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: And then he really got detailed on how they do it It's wild.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's like listening to just next level calculus.
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: They mean,
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: they can tell who your guard is going to block,
- 41:38SPEAKER_01: who your running back is going to block.
- 41:40SPEAKER_01: And then from that, they can adjust.
- 41:42SPEAKER_01: They can shift their alignment to the point where, okay, is it Blake Ashman?
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Is it Eric Wilson?
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Well, if it's Blake Ashman.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: He's going to blitz.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Is the running back going to pick him up?
- 41:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, by the way, there's Harrison Smith.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Is he coming?
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: They create so much havoc and so much confusion,
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: and they can tell by the way you're lined up with your alignment and all of that.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: When you blitz, I forget what the final count was for Brian Flores.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: Next-gen stats, ESPN.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, everybody has a different figure.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: I want to say it was like mid-70s, 80%.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: He pressured more in this game than
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: anybody usually
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: pressures.
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: And it just gets you on your heels, right?
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: And that's the essence of momentum.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: One terrible play leads to another and another and you're second guessing yourself
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: and you don't know who's blitzing and where they're lined up and who's dropping.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: It's just, and it's loud.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: You can't hear yourself think at that point of the game.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: It was just an absolute cyclone of dysfunction for the Packers offensive line
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: and protection plan.
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: And I mean,
- 42:45SPEAKER_01: some of Jordan loves best plays too,
- 42:47SPEAKER_01: where Evading defenders and blitzers and getting on the move.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: I thought he was great overall.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: But it's a long game, right?
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: And that's kind of the point.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Brian Flores is okay giving up some plays.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: And got Jordan Love almost through for 400 yards in this game.
- 43:04SPEAKER_01: He knows it's a game of turnovers, momentum.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: And if he can create four or five of those moments,
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: not only are they going to win, they're going to blow you out.
- 43:14SPEAKER_01: We thought this was going to be a blowout Packers win at one point.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: It was 22 to 10.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Hell, it could have been 35 to 10.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden, it's a blowout Vikings win.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: That's why, I mean,
- 43:25SPEAKER_01: the Vikings should be taken very seriously,
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: regardless of who was playing quarterback this week and beyond.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: That defense, it's loaded.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: Also, no, I mentioned it in the Kyler Murray series that I wrote.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: Talking to some of these players, they really felt defensively at the end of last season, right?
- 43:40SPEAKER_01: We all forgot about the Vikings at four and eight.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: Who cares about him?
- 43:45SPEAKER_01: Mac Brosmer's throwing picks, you know, ridiculous blooper picks to Seattle.
- 43:50SPEAKER_01: We just kind of checked out.
- 43:52SPEAKER_01: They won five in a row.
- 43:53SPEAKER_00: At Golong, we didn't forget about the Vikes.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 43:56SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: We broke down every single game.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: That five-game winning streak they ended on,
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: the defense felt like if they somehow were able to sneak into the playoffs,
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: they really could have done damage.
- 44:10SPEAKER_01: That's the shame of the whole Sam Darnold thing.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: I mean, if they kept Sam Darnold...
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Realistically, the Vikings could have been in the Super Bowl.
- 44:16SPEAKER_01: So if they get some general competency,
- 44:19SPEAKER_01: ideally above that stellar quarterback play,
- 44:23SPEAKER_01: this defense
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: is unlike any defense in football.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, that's what you saw at the end of that game against Green Bay.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: Took it over.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 44:33SPEAKER_00: for about 25 years, Tyler,
- 44:35SPEAKER_00: my last 25,
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: on pass plays only, I would count blitz percentages for Green Bay and the opponents.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: And the only guy who ever blitzed over 50%,
- 44:44SPEAKER_00: but it was never more than 60, was Greg Williams, wherever Greg was at.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was D.C. at many places.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: But Flores, 70%, 80%, it's great.
- 44:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, give me a second.
- 44:58SPEAKER_01: I put it in my story.
- 45:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just hang tight with me.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: It was next-gen stats, 78.3% of dropbacks.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: Wow, okay.
- 45:12SPEAKER_00: Let's throw in a note from Eric Goska,
- 45:15SPEAKER_00: the great unofficial Packer historian,
- 45:17SPEAKER_00: writing for Pro Football Journal, his weekly column.
- 45:24SPEAKER_00: Remember the three penalties that sustained that Viking drive when they took
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: the lead early in the fourth?
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, I was going to ask you about those.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Three infractions came on third downs.
- 45:38SPEAKER_00: Eric has researched to 1937.
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: That's never happened.
- 45:45SPEAKER_00: Three infractions on third down when the team's trailing in the fourth quarter.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: And another one here.
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: When Green Bay is led by five or more after three quarters,
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: the pack is 574, 38 and six, 934 percentage in the regular season.
- 46:07SPEAKER_00: Curly Lambeau lost five.
- 46:10SPEAKER_00: He was 161-5-2 in those situations.
- 46:14SPEAKER_00: Matt LaFleur has now also lost five.
- 46:17SPEAKER_00: He's 53-5.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: So they know how to choke it up.
- 46:22SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 46:24SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the D. I didn't see the Dallas game.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Did you watch that, Tyler?
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: And do you know how Kenny Clark played?
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: That's when I would have been writing this LaFleur.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Vikings column, so no, I didn't watch that one closely.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: Planted to.
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: So
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: I thought the front for almost the whole game was pretty powerful and pretty physical.
- 46:50SPEAKER_00: I really did.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: And this is a front that's lost Kenny Clark.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: They lost a really good nose tackle in Cincinnati now, TJ Slayton.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: They let him watch.
- 47:00SPEAKER_00: And they let Colby Wooden get away rather than re-sign him.
- 47:05SPEAKER_00: No, they traded him.
- 47:08SPEAKER_00: I forgot.
- 47:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so Wooden.
- 47:11SPEAKER_00: So they're playing now inside with Jonathan Ford,
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: Devontae Wyatt,
- 47:18SPEAKER_00: the rookie McClellan, and Hargrave, the ex-stealer, and last year on the Vikings.
- 47:27SPEAKER_00: They tried with Jordan Riley.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: They tried with Bohanna, Stackhouse.
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: They cut him.
- 47:34SPEAKER_00: They tried with all these big ones.
- 47:35SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: So what do they got?
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: Jonathan Ford entered the league and he was Green Bay's seventh round pick in 22.
- 47:44SPEAKER_00: He's been with the Bears.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: He's been a couple other places.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: He's massive.
- 47:48SPEAKER_00: He's 6'5", 341.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: But they need,
- 47:51SPEAKER_00: they know,
- 47:52SPEAKER_00: they've been searching for a big guy to stuff the run after Kenny Clark departed
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: and Slayton departed.
- 48:01SPEAKER_00: All right, how do you look?
- 48:03SPEAKER_00: Well, he's massive.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: He's 6'5".
- 48:05SPEAKER_00: He's got short arms, 32 and three quarter.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: So he's fighting in here, you know, but he's massive and you can see him.
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: And he pushes the pile at times.
- 48:14SPEAKER_00: He plays high.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: He gets straight up, but he's so big and strong.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: He had 29 on the bench.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: He had a sack.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was giving problems to the right guard, the veteran Will Fries.
- 48:26SPEAKER_00: He got a bull sack on Fries in 3.4 seconds.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: He got an encroachment penalty you can't have.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: And he killed Christian Derrisaw on the goal line, a run for nothing.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: So in 28 snaps, I thought Ford was okay.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to Devontae Wyatt coming back from the bad injury.
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was kind of pounding on Blake Brandle, the center, too, kind of buffeting him.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: He got a hit on a run for no gain.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: He had half a sack against Brandle in 2.8.
- 48:56SPEAKER_00: He's getting his feet wet, so he's got to really come through for him.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: But, you know, he has the pass rush.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: And he's got to be their top inside guy.
- 49:05SPEAKER_00: Now McClellan, the rookie, sixth third-round pick.
- 49:10SPEAKER_00: He's 6'3.5", 313, ran 504.
- 49:14SPEAKER_00: 34 arms, fine.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: 11-hand, massive.
- 49:19SPEAKER_00: 25 on the bench.
- 49:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's got credentials.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: He had one good year there in college.
- 49:23SPEAKER_00: Already played in the 3-4 now of Gannon.
- 49:27SPEAKER_00: Played left-hand.
- 49:28SPEAKER_00: He played nose.
- 49:29SPEAKER_00: He was strong at the point.
- 49:31SPEAKER_00: He got the roughing the passer penalty, which was a cheap call.
- 49:35SPEAKER_00: But he really, he bull rushed that second-year left guard, Donovan Jackson.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: There was hope for McClellan.
- 49:42SPEAKER_00: Let's go to Hargrave.
- 49:44SPEAKER_00: This is his 11th year in football.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: You know, he's a little guy.
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: He's 6'1 1⁄2", 308.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: It amazed me.
- 49:53SPEAKER_00: They gave him a two-year deal for $23 million, $10.5 just guaranteed.
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: Tyler, we saw the guy in Minnesota last year.
- 50:02SPEAKER_00: He once was a really good pass rusher.
- 50:07SPEAKER_00: He wasn't last year in Minnesota.
- 50:10SPEAKER_00: And everybody ran on him.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: They tried to run on this guy here.
- 50:14SPEAKER_00: The Vikings know this guy.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: Wherever he is, you're going to try to run at him.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: He's small.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: And he couldn't even stay on the field last year,
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: not because of the injury,
- 50:23SPEAKER_00: because he was too weak to handle the run and he was getting exposed.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know what the Packers did taking this guy.
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: But mark my words, people will run on and this will not turn out.
- 50:34SPEAKER_00: And then Brooks, Carl Brooks, the other interior guy, he had the most snaps, 37.
- 50:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, we know Brooks.
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: He's a better guy against the pass on the run.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: He bowled Brandle.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: He bowled Fry, set up a sack.
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: He got hooked by Derisaw on that big run at the end by Mason for 28.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: So that's the interior front.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: They played Hargrave, McClellan, Ford, Wyatt, and Brooks.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: Was it good enough?
- 51:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: I thought it was pretty solid.
- 51:08SPEAKER_00: You know, for not having featured type guys, not bad.
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go outside where they don't have Micah Parsons.
- 51:17SPEAKER_00: Nobody knows what Micah Parsons, when he's going to be back.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: And when he does, no one knows how he's going to perform.
- 51:24SPEAKER_00: Generally,
- 51:25SPEAKER_00: when you got a big guy like that,
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: You're not the same for a year and a half, sometimes two.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: People think he's going to be magic.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: Maybe he will be.
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: Odds are that he won't be quite as good.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: All right, let's look outside.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: Van Ness.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: This is his fourth year.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: He's got to start coming on, Tyler.
- 51:49SPEAKER_00: He's got 11-inch hands.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: He's got a 34 arm.
- 51:52SPEAKER_00: He's got 20 on the test.
- 51:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, this guy looks like Tarzan, man.
- 51:57SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying he plays like Jane yet, but it's not there.
- 52:00SPEAKER_00: He beat the tight end Oliver, a really good blocker on a run play for no gain.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: He got a sack against Derisaw, took 4.3, but he got to the guy.
- 52:11SPEAKER_00: He had an offsides penalty on that touchdown that Jefferson caught, which made it tough on Sise.
- 52:18SPEAKER_00: That was a problem.
- 52:20SPEAKER_00: And he had a face mask penalty that was not called.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: All right, the other starter was Sorrell, the guy from Texas, fourth-round pick last year.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: He had a hurry.
- 52:33SPEAKER_00: He got killed on Jones' touchdown.
- 52:35SPEAKER_00: He had an offside penalty.
- 52:37SPEAKER_00: He had 40 snaps.
- 52:38SPEAKER_00: Vaness had 43.
- 52:40SPEAKER_00: Sorrell was just okay.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: You got Brenton Cox.
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: He's now in his fourth year.
- 52:45SPEAKER_00: They've kept him around for – this is his fourth year.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: He had a neutral zone penalty.
- 52:51SPEAKER_00: He avoided his face mask penalty.
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: Just kind of out there.
- 52:57SPEAKER_00: You know, they lose Anikbari.
- 52:59SPEAKER_00: They lose Gary.
- 53:03SPEAKER_00: Preston Smith is now gone.
- 53:08SPEAKER_00: Mosby's on practice squad.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: Oliver's on, I don't know, reserve, I guess.
- 53:14SPEAKER_00: So who else they got?
- 53:15SPEAKER_00: They got one more guy, don't they?
- 53:24SPEAKER_00: Oh, Dennis Sutton, the guy from Penn State, the rookie.
- 53:28SPEAKER_00: All right, he only played 21 snaps.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: I thought he'd play more.
- 53:33SPEAKER_00: He stuffed Oliver at the point of attack one time.
- 53:36SPEAKER_00: The run was minus four.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: It was a hell of a play.
- 53:39SPEAKER_00: He also got killed on Mason's 28-yard run at the point of attack.
- 53:43SPEAKER_00: That really kind of changed the whole tempo there.
- 53:48SPEAKER_00: He's just okay.
- 53:49SPEAKER_00: He's got a ton of ability.
- 53:50SPEAKER_00: We got to see a whole lot more out of him.
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 53:53SPEAKER_00: Warren Brinson,
- 53:54SPEAKER_00: a really talented defensive tackle from Georgia,
- 53:58SPEAKER_00: who they took in the sixth round last year.
- 54:01SPEAKER_00: He was inactive.
- 54:02SPEAKER_00: Kind of interesting.
- 54:03SPEAKER_00: So they like Ford, McClellan.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: They like these guys better than him.
- 54:07SPEAKER_00: Brooks, okay.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: Let's go to the linebackers.
- 54:12SPEAKER_00: Boy, my first look at Zaire Franklin.
- 54:15SPEAKER_00: Really, really excited to see this guy.
- 54:17SPEAKER_00: And it was a very interesting battle he had.
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: Let's look at this guy's stats from Indianapolis.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: First of all,
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: let's get the raw numbers because you're going to see a lot of number 44 this year,
- 54:29SPEAKER_00: and it's going to be interesting to say the least.
- 54:32SPEAKER_00: All right, the Colts take him in the seventh round in 2018.
- 54:36SPEAKER_00: He's 6-0-0-1.
- 54:38SPEAKER_00: Call him six even.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: He was 2-39 coming out, ran a 4-6-2.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: Not bad, but he don't run that now.
- 54:47SPEAKER_00: Wunderlich, 18.
- 54:48SPEAKER_00: Vert, great, 38.
- 54:51SPEAKER_00: 10-2 on the broad, 30 on the bench.
- 54:54SPEAKER_00: Man, he was acquired in the trade for wooden.
- 54:58SPEAKER_00: 31 and three quarters arms.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: That's okay for his height.
- 55:01SPEAKER_00: Nine and a half hand.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: Let's look at this guy, Franklin.
- 55:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, he played a lot of good football in eight years for the Colts, Tyler.
- 55:09SPEAKER_00: He started 82 games.
- 55:11SPEAKER_00: He started the last five years.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: Um, 10 sacks, he's not a pass rusher.
- 55:17SPEAKER_00: 10 forced fumbles, 34 tackles for loss.
- 55:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's had 738 tackles.
- 55:22SPEAKER_00: All right, so I've tried to watch him on every play.
- 55:28SPEAKER_00: He played all but three snaps.
- 55:30SPEAKER_00: So what about Zaire Franklin?
- 55:33SPEAKER_00: He's replacing Quay Walker.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: They're the antithesis of each other.
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: You got a really smart guy here who's small against a guy, Quay,
- 55:42SPEAKER_00: who finally started playing to his ability To an extent last year,
- 55:47SPEAKER_00: but we know he's got false steps and we had all that bad reaction stuff in his game.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: All right, Franklin, what did we see?
- 55:58SPEAKER_00: Well, he will take on despite his size.
- 56:04SPEAKER_00: He is a rugged competitor and he will slam into guards in the hole.
- 56:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, sometimes he's in that old 3-4 look.
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 56:12SPEAKER_00: when you're on the bubble uncovered and the guard comes out,
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: he will slam into the guard, whether it's Fries or Donovan Jackson.
- 56:20SPEAKER_00: There are some real collisions.
- 56:21SPEAKER_00: And boy, I was impressed with it.
- 56:22SPEAKER_00: He's given up almost 100 pounds.
- 56:25SPEAKER_00: He slipped Derisaw, man.
- 56:27SPEAKER_00: He's hard to get to at the second level.
- 56:29SPEAKER_00: Derisaw came out and he's a tremendous athlete and he thought he could get Franklin.
- 56:34SPEAKER_00: Franklin slipped him, got in on the play, gain a one.
- 56:38SPEAKER_00: On that interception, he got the knockdown on the play when he blitzed.
- 56:43SPEAKER_00: Third, he fires, man.
- 56:46SPEAKER_00: He's a pretty effective, that was that word in high school we used, linebackers fire, you know.
- 56:53SPEAKER_00: He's pretty effective doing that.
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: He eluded the right tackle, Brian O'Neal, made the hit, gain a one.
- 57:00SPEAKER_00: All right, what was really interesting,
- 57:07SPEAKER_00: His matchup against the rookie fullback, Max Bredesen.
- 57:11SPEAKER_00: Now I know Bredesen because he was from Michigan.
- 57:14SPEAKER_00: He's a sixth round pick, number 45.
- 57:18SPEAKER_00: Right away, Bredesen hit him on a lead, an iso.
- 57:22SPEAKER_00: And it was like Franklin lectured him.
- 57:24SPEAKER_00: He had his right forefinger, his pointer finger out in Bredesen's helmet.
- 57:29SPEAKER_00: And he kind of just lectured to the guy.
- 57:32SPEAKER_00: Now, a huge reason.
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: No, I can't say that.
- 57:37SPEAKER_00: A big reason why Michigan was good to the run game the last three years is because
- 57:40SPEAKER_00: of Max Bredesen and why their running backs haven't run worth a shit
- 57:44SPEAKER_00: the first two games.
- 57:45SPEAKER_00: They don't have anybody that can replace them.
- 57:48SPEAKER_00: They got no fullback.
- 57:49SPEAKER_00: They got tight ends doing it.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: This guy's an old-fashioned William Henderson.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: He's a get-after fullback like
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: Jewswick from the 49ers.
- 58:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, you check.
- 58:03SPEAKER_00: You check, yeah.
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: All right, now third and two, Bredesen and Franklin again.
- 58:09SPEAKER_01: Bredesen dominates the crap out of them.
- 58:12SPEAKER_00: Then the rookie started talking to him.
- 58:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the shoe was
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: on the other foot.
- 58:18SPEAKER_00: I know Bredesen.
- 58:18SPEAKER_00: I've seen a lot of interviews with this guy.
- 58:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's got some savvy and moxie to him.
- 58:24SPEAKER_00: He took it the first time on the chin from the vet, second time, no.
- 58:28SPEAKER_00: And then there were other instances of what they were going at it.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: It was an extremely interesting matchup,
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: and I call it a draw,
- 58:40SPEAKER_00: but Franklin knows that that young kid's going to – and that's why
- 58:44SPEAKER_00: the Vikings are running the ball.
- 58:45SPEAKER_00: They get Bredesen.
- 58:46SPEAKER_00: For the first time,
- 58:47SPEAKER_00: KOC looks interested in the running game,
- 58:50SPEAKER_00: and he's got the fullback to do it, and they're going to try to pound meat.
- 58:53SPEAKER_00: Now, whether it works or not, I don't know.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to Cooper.
- 58:59SPEAKER_01: Also, Frank Smith,
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: bringing him up for Miami,
- 59:01SPEAKER_01: I think is variable – He was involved in that outside zone.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: They get that work in offensive.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: I know we'll get to the Vikes, but that's a great point on the fullback.
- 59:12SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: Cooper, yeah, in the beginning he was uncontrollable.
- 59:19SPEAKER_00: He runs in, great play, behind Bredesen, timed it perfect, minus four.
- 59:26SPEAKER_00: Then he missed Kyler Murray, extra gain of seven.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: He runs through, misses Mason still.
- 59:33SPEAKER_00: He screwed it up and the game was only one.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: He had to run stuff, eluded fries, the red guard.
- 59:38SPEAKER_00: He had a sack and 1.2.
- 59:40SPEAKER_00: He just stepped in fast, fast, fast.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: And he had a half a sack when he, I can't even read that, 2.8.
- 59:53SPEAKER_00: Very impressive.
- 59:54SPEAKER_00: He played all but three snaps.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: He's a good partner with Franklin.
- 59:57SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: Franklin's the middle backer,
- 59:59SPEAKER_00: and when they're in various sets and alignments,
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_00: Cooper's off to the side,
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: it's easier to run away from them, and Franklin's a step slow.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's been in the,
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_00: you know, he's 30 years old, and he's a step slow, but he's really smart.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, we never saw McDuffie,
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: so they got,
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_00: they paid Franklin,
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: they traded for the guy,
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_00: and McDuffie, who we know is a solid player, he never saw anything from scrimmage.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the secondary.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_00: Is it Cissé or CeCe?
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: So he leaves with cramps and doesn't play the last 16 plays, and Valentine comes in.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_00: All right, Cissé missed a tackle.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's over there against Jefferson all the time.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, the quarterbacking play for the Vikings was pretty dreadful, but,
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_00: he wasn't damaged until
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_00: the false start kind of screwed up the timing, and he...
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: He made a poor adjustment, turned the wrong way.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_00: He was in bail technique.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_00: He was seven yards off Jefferson at the snap.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: I didn't think he showed a lot of fight at the ball in the end zone.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_00: He just kind of accepted his fate, accepted a touchdown.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: And then he had a batted ball.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_00: First game against a player like that, pretty darn good.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Valentine...
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: He was late on Jefferson on that nine yard touchdown.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: Certainly McKinney was involved in that too.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: Bullard,
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: the unnecessary roughness penalty on the Murray injury,
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_00: illegal contact, wiped out a sack on third and 11.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: That's when the game was changing early in the fourth.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, let's go to Nixon.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: I love the way Nixon played in this game.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: You can rip Nixon all you want, and I've done a little bit of that last year.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_00: This is one tough guy, man.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_00: He's in his eighth year.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_00: He don't care, Tyler.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_00: He's just out there playing.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_00: The guys with the Raiders, he didn't do anything there.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: He's got a low test score.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: The guy's a football player, man.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_00: Comes off the edge, first play, tackle for loss, minus one.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_00: Gets the pick at second play.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: Jefferson catches a 10-yard ball, well covered on a curl.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: Well, he's right there.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_00: Third and six,
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_00: Jefferson catches a ball on him for 10,
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: all right on him, not taking a chance to get beat deep.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: He runs in when there's no receiver to his side,
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_00: gets half a sack on a cat blitz,
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: gets a knockdown, wrecked a bootleg incomplete, extremely physical.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_00: He destroyed Jawan Jennings on a bubble.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_00: This is one tough football player.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: I love watching that guy play.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: All right, now let's go to the safeties.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: Williams, Evan Williams, strong tackle.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, Mason, he's 225.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_00: Comes hauling ass right through the middle there.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_00: Strong tackle, full speed.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_00: That's something McKinney wouldn't do in a million years.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_00: And then Williams, unnecessary roughness penalty against Jefferson.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_01: Was it against Jefferson?
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it was.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_00: Okay, McKinney.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: One time Jones,
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: when they're just mounting their comeback,
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_00: he charges ahead through the middle of the game's eight.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: And you're saying to yourself, well, how did he get the last five?
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: There's just a tunnel of bodies.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_00: Because McKinney's pile sniffing.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_00: He's not in there delivering a blow and taking this guy down and stopping the run
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_00: for a gain of four.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_00: So it becomes eight.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_00: Now the touchdown to Jefferson.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_00: It looked like cover two.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_00: He didn't make the play.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_00: Williams is shading towards Jefferson, as you can imagine.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_00: That was the touchdown to Hawkinson, I'm sorry.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_00: And he was on the other side where Hawkinson eventually broke into the middle.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_00: Holding man versus Henderson, no interception.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_00: We had the holding penalty against Henderson that wiped out
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_00: the Evan Williams Interception, fateful play.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_00: He was late on that two-point play.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_00: And then he showed little resistance on Jones's touchdown run.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_00: And then he got run through by Mason on a one-yard touchdown.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_00: That's it there.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_00: Smack had a really good debut.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: Hits from 59, 43, 26.
- 1:04:44SPEAKER_00: Had the 40, made it, took it off the board.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_00: Of his kickoffs,
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_00: Five of six were either on top of the numbers or outside the numbers,
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_00: which you're trying to do in this day and age.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_00: Five of six, that's really good accuracy.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_00: Waylon, I love the guy.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_00: He had a bad debut.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: Three punts, 38-7, 34-3, only 4-2-7 on the net.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_00: Melton had a big 59-yard kickoff return.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_00: The guy's dangerous.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_00: They got kickoff returners.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_00: Nixon, we know, can do this.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_00: Sutton had a hold on a kickoff return.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: Sky Moores, the punt returner, looked okay.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_00: So that's it for the Packers, Tyler.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_00: 0-1.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: Great breakdown.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: As always from Bob McGinn, what does it all mean?
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: It's one game.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: Did you see stuff on film that concerns you over the long haul?
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: First impression?
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_00: Uh...
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_00: No, not really.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_00: They're not going to be in a noise situation like that to that extent.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_00: They won't be seeing Flores on home turf.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_00: I liked a lot of things.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Banks should come back.
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_00: I think Burton's going to be playing before Long.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_00: Belton might be back in the lineup.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_00: The running backs, I don't know when Jacobs is back, if ever, if they cut him.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_00: It has to be on being discussed.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_00: The defense, CeCe might be the answer at corner, might give him really good corner play.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_00: Franklin, I don't really know how he's going to be.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_00: Will he be as good as Quay Walker?
- 1:06:33SPEAKER_00: Totally different.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the smack was very encouraging.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_00: They got a great punter.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_00: Special teams coach, he's brand new.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he's any good.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_00: Cover units were pretty bad in this game.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_00: So Green Bay is never good on teams.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_00: How do you see him, Tyler?
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: I did not pick that team to make the playoffs.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_00: I think the NFC West is better right now, and I had three teams from there.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_01: I love the firepower.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_01: I didn't mention it when I was rattling off the good things that the GM has done,
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_01: but he has drafted weapons in ways.
- 1:07:12SPEAKER_01: I know locals here in Western New York wish Brandon Bean did to the point
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_01: where You lose Romeo Dobbs.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_01: You lose Dontavian Wicks.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_01: One sign, one's traded because you don't want to pay him.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling pretty good about what's around Jordan Love, what he's throwing to.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_01: And sitting up there in the press box gives you a good feel of the speed that Golden
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_01: and Watson have.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_01: But I even like the short to intermediate stuff.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_01: Stopping on a dime, getting a six yarder here, a 10 yard there.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_01: And then Tucker Craft is unlike all the above.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_01: So they're going to be able to put up points.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_01: Maybe even get down by a lot.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_01: Maybe even be able to catch up because they can score in bunches.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_01: They can throw the ball all over the place.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_01: The lack of a run game would concern me, though.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_01: Still, call me a hopeless romantic.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: I feel like you have to run the ball a little.
- 1:08:03SPEAKER_01: And Marshawn Loy's just doing this for the first time.
- 1:08:06SPEAKER_01: He's been hurt his whole career.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_01: Timing seemed off.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure how good he is.
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: Chris Brooks is a part-time guy that you're not going to be handing the ball off
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: to 15 to 20 times.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: The Josh Jacobs situation is a mess.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: The way Matt LaFleur handled it Friday, I believe, left a lot to be desired.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: Given what we know, that response is unbelievably pathetic.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_00: What an
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_01: unfortunate situation.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_00: Give me a break.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_00: Sick.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I mean, on the field, not having a run game would hurt you.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: They're going to get Parsons back eventually.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_01: What's their record at that point?
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, they got to win.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: Jets, Falcons,
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: you just have to put those in the win column and move on to Tampa,
- 1:09:02SPEAKER_01: move on to Chicago, as it's not going to get easier after that.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, I don't know.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_01: I The tone of the game,
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_01: the way it got away from them, you're right, the noise has a lot to do with it.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_01: Flores' defense has a lot to do with it.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_01: You're not going to have that combination every single week.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_01: But a lot of the symptoms that we saw out of this team the last month of the season,
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_01: they haven't had a losing streak like this since the dark ages, 1990, 1991.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: It's the last time they lost six in a row.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: And I get it, you're Carrying over 2025 into 2026, but they're losing the same way.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_01: I think that's a problem.
- 1:09:47SPEAKER_01: That's a concern until we see something different.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_01: You've got to be worried.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_00: Did you pick Green Bay in the playoffs, Tyler?
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_01: I did.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_00: Wild card, right?
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_01: Well, as I said, maybe they should change Titletown District to 7th seed district.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: That seems to be the bar.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_01: Currently, get that seven seed, get into the 44% club and you're good.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_01: Reserve the right to change the opinion because you're going to get Parsons back.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: Maybe things click, but it's year eight.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_00: Damning finish.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_01: Lack of finish.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_01: And I think what's concerning is what You saw out of the Chicago Bears.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: Is that what you want to get to next?
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: Or no, you got to get to Minnesota.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: I'm sorry.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_00: We'll zip through Minnesota.
- 1:10:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, Tyler?
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_00: So the receivers, there's nothing to discuss there.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_00: We'll get them heavier.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_00: The offensive line is the same left or right as last year.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_00: I didn't really see any changes in anybody.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_00: I think they should play better than they did in this game,
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_00: but They took command of the line scrimmage in the fourth quarter.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: Kyler Murray, 11 snaps.
- 1:11:05SPEAKER_00: Let's just hold on that.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: You wrote those big stories on him, Tyler.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_00: He looked dreadful, but, you know, Wentz, he's just a guy, 54 snaps.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: God, his balls, even the completions required leaping, diving, reaching, grasping catches.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's not very good, but he beat Green Bay.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_00: J.J. McCarthy's just clipboard guy.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_00: The running backs, um, we discussed Bredesen at length.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_00: He's a finisher, man.
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_00: Claiborne, he was inactive.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_00: The guy from White Forest, I've heard so much from the scouts last spring.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: I really want to see this guy.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_00: Uh, the defense, all right, you know, really smart.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_00: They got rid of Jonathan, uh, Jonathan Allen and Hargrave.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_00: They let those guys walk and, um, They were bad pickups the year before.
- 1:12:01SPEAKER_00: It should have been money that should have gone to Darnold, went to Allen and Hargrave.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: And those guys left and they're gone and they were over the hill and now they're playing.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: And young guys, we know Redmond's a hell of a player, free agent.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_00: No, seventh round, free agent.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: And now Rodriguez, a seventh round pick has become a player.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_00: And Ingram Dawkins played pretty well in this game.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_00: And now they got the two rookies.
- 1:12:30SPEAKER_00: You got Banks in the first and Dominique Orange in the third.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_00: So Banks, of course, I watched him.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_00: He is an extremely controversial draft pick.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_00: He played 16 snaps.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_00: He's 6'6", 327, ran 508 with a 35-inch arm and a 10-7-8 hand.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_00: He's a colossus.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_00: He got knocked out of there early by Ryan, a gain of six right at the point of attack.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: Ryan just hammered his butt.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: And he looked like he only played 16 snaps.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_00: It looked to me like he tired.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_00: This is boom or bust, Tyler.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_00: You know, a D lineman with numbers and a checkered pass.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_00: Boom or bust.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_00: Dominique Orange.
- 1:13:18SPEAKER_00: One scout, love this guy.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: I can still hear his words.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_00: Iowa State, third round pick.
- 1:13:23SPEAKER_00: Massive.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_00: 6'2 1⁄2", 322, 517.
- 1:13:30SPEAKER_00: He stuffed that quarterback sneak.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_00: He stuffed Sean Ryan.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_01: I want to bring that up.
- 1:13:36SPEAKER_01: He had a comment to our pal Matthew Collar of Purple Insider after the game on that sneak.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: Did you catch this quote?
- 1:13:43SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:13:46SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_01: Dominique Orange, here it is on the quarterback sneak.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_01: It was disrespectful.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_01: So mindset was, y'all going to go take that?
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_01: All right, cool.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_01: Turnover on downs.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, I knew it was going to be a sneak.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_01: Fourth and one and you have
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_00: a rookie in front of you?
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_00: If I was a quarterback, I'd try that too.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: But they don't know about Big Citrus yet.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_00: Big Citrus?
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, I never heard that.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_00: That's funny.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_00: All right, so that's their front.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_00: They're doing it with all young people.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_00: Five young guys.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_00: They're better than Allen and Hargrave, though, I'll tell you that.
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they are.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, outside on the edge.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_00: Van Ginkle's back.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_00: He was shut down by,
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_00: what is it,
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_00: Bako Bewele in the first half,
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_00: but then he got a knockdown on a rollout, and he got a sack against Janu Smith.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_00: And that was the fumble.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_00: So we know Van Ginkle.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: We like him.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_00: Now they let
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_00: go of Jonathan Grenard.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_00: Or they just didn't pay him.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_00: And he was their best, probably their best defensive player last year.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_00: I love Grenard.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_00: Right, Tyler?
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_00: We've talked about him.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_00: He was their best rusher for a couple years.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_00: All right, Dallas Turner.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_00: He was terrible as a rookie.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_00: And he wasn't doing anything half of last year.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_00: Now this was a breakout party.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_00: I got six knockdowns, one flush,
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_00: and one sack, and one run stuff against Kraft.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_00: So that's about nine or ten, ten pressures.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_00: He was unstoppable.
- 1:15:43SPEAKER_00: Dallas Turner, let's look at him, Tyler.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_00: He was like the 12th or 15th pick in 24.
- 1:15:49SPEAKER_00: Six, two and a half, two fifty, six.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_00: The Phenom ran 4-4-3.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_00: You could see all that.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_00: 40 and a half Burt.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, my word.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_00: 10-7 on the broad, 20 on the bench, never took the test.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_00: 34 and 3-8 arm, 9 and 7-8 hand, 20 on the bench.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_00: Is he this good?
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_00: Is he going to be Anderson or, you know, one of these guys?
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_00: It was a great start.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_00: Now, he's up against Morgan.
- 1:16:19SPEAKER_00: He's Doing things against Monk and all these people.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: Redman, he gets a sack against.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_00: Brooks, he overpowers the back.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, and then their third guy, Kyle Vannoy.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_00: What's he, like 38, 40?
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_00: He plays 25.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_01: He's got a substack.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_00: Kyle Vannoy's got his own substack.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_00: Does he really?
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_00: He's in our world, yeah.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_00: They just signed him off the street at 10 days ago or two weeks ago?
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_00: And he was their third guy, wasn't he?
- 1:16:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Shambliss didn't play.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_00: Richter didn't play.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: He was their third guy.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_00: I never, I don't know.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_00: Secondary, they didn't have to cover long.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_00: They got beat.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_00: They all took their lumps, Rodgers, Murphy.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_00: Pierre played good, the ex-Stealer.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_00: What'd they pay Pierre?
- 1:17:22SPEAKER_00: They paid Pierre.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_01: Not much.
- 1:17:26SPEAKER_00: Two years, 8.5, 3-7 guaranteed.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: That's more than I thought.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_00: He had the pick and a nice breakup to Lloyd down there and a well-thrown ball at
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_00: the two going in.
- 1:17:35SPEAKER_00: Harrison Smith's back.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: It's a big plus.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_00: He only played 26 snaps.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, Metellus, he's the brains of the outfit back there with Harrison.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_00: I mean, you got two really, really smart safeties there.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_00: Um, and then Jackson plays, uh, he's just okay guy.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_00: So that's their D. Um, they got a hell of a kicker in Reichard of his seven kickoffs.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_00: Only two went on or outside the numbers compared to smacks five out of six.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_00: Thorson, the rookie punter.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_00: Now they really lost a good punter.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_00: The guy last year that was right, who went to Carolina or somewhere.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_00: Thorsen, four punts, 40.3, 36.0, 4.42.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_00: Price, this Miles Price, I mean, we know he's hell on wheels.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_00: He's courageous.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: He had the 68-yard kickoff when McDuffie and Evan Williams got blown away at
- 1:18:41SPEAKER_00: the point of attack.
- 1:18:42SPEAKER_00: Smack, missed that tackle.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_00: Tried to trip him, Tyler.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_00: He would have taken the tripping penalty.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_00: Price, five kickoffs, 35-8, one punt, 13.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_00: Turner offsides on the block, field goal.
- 1:18:56SPEAKER_00: That's about it for the Vikes, T.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_01: Love talking to Miles Price after the game about that return.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_01: He kind of went blow for blow.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_00: Did he?
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_01: And he's like, yeah, oh yeah.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_01: I put part of it in our story here, but let me see if I can find the full quote.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_01: It was good.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_01: So boom, catch the kickoff.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_01: I'm running, put my foot in the ground, and I watched DJ come by and totally kill somebody.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_01: As soon as he did that, I said, oh, I can go right here.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_01: And I saw the hole and just hit it.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_01: Made out perfect.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: And so that's DJ Dallas, you know, journeyman running back.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_01: I'd forgotten he just got pulled up from the practice squad.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: They signed him like 10 days ago.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_01: And that's just the kind of culture that they got there.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_01: They're picking up Kyle Vannoy, DJ Dallas.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_01: These guys are making plays
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_00: in big-time moments.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_00: Wasn't Dallas a game day activation?
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_01: Maybe the day before?
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: The night before?
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: I don't think he's on the roster yet.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: He's just one of the two they moved up on Sunday.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:20:08SPEAKER_00: You want to go to the Bears, T?
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_00: 72,000 at Carolina.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_00: Boy, there was a lot of Bear fans there.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_00: There was a lot of noise for Chicago.
- 1:20:23SPEAKER_00: It kind of reminded me of what Green Bay,
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_00: when they started getting good in the mid-90s,
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_00: early 90s, what those visiting crowds were like, Packer fans everywhere.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_00: Because it certainly wasn't like that in the 80s and 90, 91.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_00: No way.
- 1:20:40SPEAKER_00: There was 500 Packer fans maybe.
- 1:20:43SPEAKER_00: But the noise picked up.
- 1:20:45SPEAKER_00: I remember writing big stories about talking to the visiting PR guy
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_00: and what they estimated the Packer Attendance figure was at their stadium.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_00: And that's the way it was for the Bears.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_00: And it was just a loud crowd.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_00: And so they're really into their team.
- 1:21:03SPEAKER_00: We'll see.
- 1:21:07SPEAKER_00: Now, everything I want to just preface this, Carolina was a decimated defense.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, they don't have Turk Wharton, Skorton, Pat Jones.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_00: They lost Bobby Brown in this game.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_00: Jackson was in and out the corner.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, they had about four or five defensive key players missing.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_00: And they got, they look like it.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_00: They got smashed.
- 1:21:31SPEAKER_00: All right, let's look at the Bears.
- 1:21:33SPEAKER_00: You got to start with Caleb Williams, Tyler.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_00: He, reading my notes, so elusive, so explosive, so fascinating.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_00: You know, in the old days, this is a guy who would sell tickets.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_00: You had to worry about that in the NFL when I started, you know.
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_00: And you could even draft or trade for somebody to help you sell tickets.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_00: Well, that's what this guy would do.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: He's got a quick trigger release, man.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_00: His mechanics, they have improved so much now since that rookie year.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_00: And you got to credit Ben Johnson and you got to credit Williams.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_00: So let's just look at a few things.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_00: Nine-yard touchdown on a scramble.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_00: There was no real rush.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_00: He just saw the left side empty and just took off.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_00: He knew from the route design what was going to be happening with the coverage,
- 1:22:24SPEAKER_00: and when it all planned out, he took it.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_00: He threw that 22-yard touchdown to come at down there,
- 1:22:31SPEAKER_00: lofted the ball in the left corner, tight man coverage, fearless throw, no fear.
- 1:22:39SPEAKER_00: He pump fakes on the scrambles,
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_00: the way Favre and Rogers always did,
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_00: and he gets you and buys you another couple yards.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_00: He does that for six.
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_00: Fourth and one,
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_00: they didn't do a tush push just like the Packers,
- 1:22:51SPEAKER_00: and he failed on that quarterback sneak.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_00: Fourth and one, went for it at his own 21.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_00: Awkward body position.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_00: He moves left.
- 1:23:03SPEAKER_00: He pumps fakes.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_00: He reloads, brings the ball down, and then he hits
- 1:23:11SPEAKER_00: Raymond for a gain of 28.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_00: All right, he took a dumb delay penalty after a stoppage of play.
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: Remember we used to have four or five of those every week for game management miscues?
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_00: This was, I think, the only one.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_00: Carolina rushes four.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_00: There's nothing happening, nothing good.
- 1:23:34SPEAKER_00: He runs up.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_00: All of a sudden, he veers left, untouched to the end zone, 29 yards.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_00: They've got no 40 on the guy.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_00: We never will have one.
- 1:23:44SPEAKER_00: I don't know what he is, Tyler.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_00: 4-5-8, 4-6-2, something like that.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_00: 4-6-5 at the worst.
- 1:23:51SPEAKER_01: Boy, I'd say faster than that.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_01: He's lost some weight in the offseason.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_01: I'm watching it right now.
- 1:23:56SPEAKER_01: He is moving.
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_00: He's pretty quick, isn't he?
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_00: He missed a wide-open commit, deep.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_00: He had a guy in the face, but he threw a bad ball.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: Then he threw a terrible miss behind Colston Loveland in the middle of the field.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_00: Might have been a 30-yard gain.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_00: He's managing the pocket so much better.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_00: Now, again, the pass rush was negligible.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_00: This is, you know, kind of a wounded defense that ranked 16th last year.
- 1:24:25SPEAKER_00: He had a bunch of smart throwaways the same way that Jordan Love is using that gambit now.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_00: He missed a Dunzey for an 11-yard touchdown too far inside.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_00: He had a rollout.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_00: Man, he's going for the right front pylon trying to get a touchdown.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_00: He lowers that head, lowers that shoulder, took a hell of a shot at the one.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_00: He's got to forget about those notions.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_00: He's going to get drilled in the next week.
- 1:24:53SPEAKER_00: He got up.
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_00: He had interception by the defensive lineman, Brown, wiped out by penalty.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_00: And he had another quarterback sneak at the one-yard line that failed.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_00: So that's it on Williams.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_00: Should I keep going on the O, Tyler?
- 1:25:08SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_01: Let's go to.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, the running back, Swift 43, Manungai 32.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_00: They both go, they combine for 224 on 28, four touchdowns.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_00: Swift, you know, when he entered the league, Tyler, he was kind of a cutter, you know.
- 1:25:29SPEAKER_00: Now he's become a slammer.
- 1:25:32SPEAKER_00: He ran in between the tackles.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_00: He ran hard.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_00: He had a 17-yard gain on the first play, called back of penalty.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_00: He broke two tackles, a gain of 32, but he's kind of slow.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_00: He got run down easily by the rookie corner, Will Lee.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_00: Feisty on blitz pickup.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_00: The guy, I don't remember him going after people like that on blitz pickup.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_00: You know, he just got a new contract.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_00: He got pretty good money.
- 1:26:04SPEAKER_01: Three years,
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_00: 33.75 million right there.
- 1:26:09SPEAKER_01: 27.5 guaranteed.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you got it.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_00: You know, he was surging in the second half.
- 1:26:15SPEAKER_00: He's transformed his style, man.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_00: 28-yard touchdown.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_00: Tyler.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, and Mononga.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: 19 on a check down.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_00: He gets that ball and he goes north-south fast.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_00: I love his style, man.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_00: The kid from Rutgers, he had a hell of a career.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_00: 61 yard touchdown, right down the right hash mark, made two guys miss early.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_00: Tyler, this club,
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:26:43SPEAKER_00: Ben Johnson's talked about scoring more points or more yards than anybody
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_00: in history.
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_00: He's got the right side of the line that you got to deal with.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_00: You got to deal with Darnell Wright and Jonah Jackson.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_00: And that is a problem.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_00: Those guys, both those long runs and all this stuff, Wright just caved.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_00: When he down blocks, you can kiss it goodbye.
- 1:27:08SPEAKER_00: You're gone.
- 1:27:09SPEAKER_00: You're buried.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_00: And Jackson is a physical guy.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, Wright got money, I think, this year.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:27:21SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, now the center is the problem.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_00: They lose the guy from last year who retires.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_00: Where's my notes?
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_00: Dolman.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_00: So Bradbury, we know we've seen him for what, six years at Minnesota as the starter.
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_00: Last year in the Super Bowl with the Patriots as a starter.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_00: We know Garrett Bradbury.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_00: We've talked about him at length.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_00: 6'3", 305, 493,
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_00: first round pick,
- 1:27:48SPEAKER_00: quick as hell, 34 on the bench, really short arms, 31 and three quarters.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_00: X tight end, smart as hell, 35 and 25 on the test.
- 1:27:59SPEAKER_00: Played pretty good.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_00: He had two bad runs, and he had a holding penalty.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_00: And it's going to happen every time.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_00: He tried to reach block big Bobby Brown, the big interior guy.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_00: Couldn't do it.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_00: Got overpowered, holding penalty.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_00: But, you know,
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't think he'd stay ahead of Logan Jones,
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_00: that second-round pick, but he is ahead of him.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_00: And if he falls through, they're going to go with the Iowa kid.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_00: Over on the left side, you got a great player in Joe Thune.
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_00: I don't care how old he is.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_00: He is one great guard.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_00: He's in his 11th year.
- 1:28:35SPEAKER_00: He's terrific.
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_00: Oh, he gave up two pressures.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_01: Jeez, Joe.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_00: And over at left tackle, Trapilo has made an amazing recovery from his major injury.
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_00: He's not even on the pup list or Any reserve list, he's on the 53.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_00: He must be ready to go.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: So they kept Braxton Jones,
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_00: the good athlete who's been starting games a little bit since 22 and 23.
- 1:29:03SPEAKER_00: He played good football, 56 snaps.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_00: And then Benedict, the kid from Canada, I believe, he played 19.
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_00: He was fine.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_00: Their O-line was really, really good.
- 1:29:15SPEAKER_00: The O-line and Williams were the best part of the offense and everything was good, 59 points.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_00: Receivers, Burden has to come through without D.J.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_00: Moore, and he looked improved.
- 1:29:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, he is really good after the catch.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_00: He had a bad fumble early, a lost fumble.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_00: But he's got good hands.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_00: He makes tough catches.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_00: He can snatch the ball.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_00: He's a threat on end of rounds.
- 1:29:41SPEAKER_00: He's just kind of a – his dad was called Ticky, and this guy's kind of tricky.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_00: Now, Ben Johnson gets –
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_00: The guy we know, Kalief Raymond from the Lions, right?
- 1:29:57SPEAKER_00: All right, so Kalief, they give him one year, 3.5.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_00: This is his 11th year.
- 1:30:03SPEAKER_00: He's 5'8 and a half, 173.
- 1:30:05SPEAKER_00: Once ran a 4.38.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_00: 28 on the test.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_00: That's why he can do Ben's stuff.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_00: That's probably why Ben loves him.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_00: A whiteout with a 28.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_00: Tiny short arms, tiny hands.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_00: What a game he had.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_00: 45 snaps.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_00: You know, he kind of fell out of favor last year in Detroit.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_00: They were going with Teslas, the three.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_00: Ben says, I'll take him on the cheap.
- 1:30:30SPEAKER_00: And he's their three.
- 1:30:32SPEAKER_00: And Jotty Walker's the four, the big guy.
- 1:30:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, now look at Raymond in this game.
- 1:30:36SPEAKER_00: A fine low catch for 12.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_00: A fine low catch for 28.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_00: Third and five.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_00: Gains 12.
- 1:30:44SPEAKER_00: Third and five on a wide receiver screen.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_00: Seven.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_00: Third and six.
- 1:30:48SPEAKER_00: Hook, nine, cracks the safety on Mononga's 61-yard touchdown.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_00: He was outstanding.
- 1:30:55SPEAKER_00: Johnson knows the guy, and he's getting everything he can out of him.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_00: But Dunne, they didn't need him.
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_00: Loveland, they didn't need him in this game.
- 1:31:03SPEAKER_00: Loveland wasn't even targeted once, I guess.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:31:06SPEAKER_00: But we know he can play.
- 1:31:07SPEAKER_00: Komet made a great catch.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_00: Roush, you couldn't tell on the young tight end.
- 1:31:12SPEAKER_00: That's it on the offense, Tyler.
- 1:31:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, the Khalif Raymond play that kind of stands out to me here.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_01: I'm just rewatching it here while you're breaking it all down.
- 1:31:22SPEAKER_01: Blabbing.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_01: End of the first half, 24-24.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_01: Caleb Williams gets sacked by Jalen Phillips, third and 11.
- 1:31:30SPEAKER_01: So there's two minutes to go in the half, right?
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_01: And they're backed up on their own 19.
- 1:31:36SPEAKER_01: Let's play it again here.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_01: Williams has time, pumps, rolls to his left, crosses body.
- 1:31:41SPEAKER_01: It's a hell of a throw, man.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_01: That's a hell of a throw by Caleb Williams.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_01: And it's a diving Cleve Raymond for a big gain.
- 1:31:48SPEAKER_01: I think that must have been his long.
- 1:31:50SPEAKER_01: 28?
- 1:31:51SPEAKER_01: 28, yeah.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_01: And that's kind of when this thing turned, right, from what I remember, the double dip.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_01: Because, yeah, Caleb Williams ran in for a touchdown, 31-24.
- 1:32:00SPEAKER_01: Then they start the second half strong.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_01: And all of a sudden, it's a rout.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_01: Because this thing was going back and forth.
- 1:32:05SPEAKER_01: Carolina, Bryce Young, that's about as good as Bryce Young's looked in.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_00: And the pros was able to keep up in this game.
- 1:32:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_01: Khalif Raymond, third and 11.
- 1:32:17SPEAKER_01: That, to me, was the key play in the game to keep that drive alive, get a score, second half.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Carolina was without bodies.
- 1:32:26SPEAKER_01: And Carolina's defense, who knows if they're any good.
- 1:32:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, this was a juggernaut.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_01: Chicago did anything, everything they wanted.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_01: I cannot wait to see Ben Johnson,
- 1:32:37SPEAKER_01: Brian Flores,
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_01: And all these weapons versus all of these rabid dogs that the Vikings have.
- 1:32:45SPEAKER_01: Everybody should have that game circled.
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_00: That's going to be that Sunday, isn't it?
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's going to be outstanding.
- 1:32:50SPEAKER_01: I think it's a 1 o'clock game, too, or noon if you're in central time.
- 1:32:54SPEAKER_01: It's an early game, yeah.
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 1:32:57SPEAKER_00: All right, the defense.
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_00: So they trade Jervon Dexter, you know, right near the end of camp.
- 1:33:04SPEAKER_00: So they're playing inside five guys.
- 1:33:06SPEAKER_00: They got six DTs.
- 1:33:08SPEAKER_00: Grady Jarrett,
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_00: Contavious Street,
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_00: Neville Gallimore,
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_00: the rookie Jordan Vandenberg from Georgia Tech, Jaden Loving and James Lentz.
- 1:33:16SPEAKER_00: They got six guys.
- 1:33:18SPEAKER_00: Do they got enough?
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_01: Well, they're small.
- 1:33:24SPEAKER_00: They're not like Green Bay.
- 1:33:26SPEAKER_00: They're not stacking up with Behemoth.
- 1:33:30SPEAKER_00: Who do they got that's huge?
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_00: Nobody.
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_00: Nobody.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_00: Andrew Billings is gone last year.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_00: Dexter was 314 coming out.
- 1:33:41SPEAKER_00: Now they've got Loving, 309.
- 1:33:42SPEAKER_00: Lynch, 289.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_00: Vandenberg, 310.
- 1:33:45SPEAKER_00: Gallimore, 305.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_00: Street was 281 coming out.
- 1:33:48SPEAKER_00: He's bigger now.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_00: Grady Jarrett's the undersized guy.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_00: All right, impressions.
- 1:33:55SPEAKER_00: Grady Jarrett, well, he's old and he's going to wear down.
- 1:34:01SPEAKER_00: He played 44 snaps.
- 1:34:03SPEAKER_00: He had three pressures.
- 1:34:05SPEAKER_00: He played pretty good.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_00: He really did.
- 1:34:09SPEAKER_00: Contavious Street, they paid him almost minimum wage.
- 1:34:15SPEAKER_00: 6'2", 281 coming out, ran 488, short arms.
- 1:34:20SPEAKER_00: I just don't know.
- 1:34:20SPEAKER_00: He had one run stuff against the rookie Freeling, and he had a sack when Young ran to him.
- 1:34:28SPEAKER_00: Gallimore, Vandenberg, they didn't play enough, really.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_00: All right, on the edge.
- 1:34:37SPEAKER_00: No pressures, really, from Booker.
- 1:34:40SPEAKER_00: Idem Bendale back from a major injury.
- 1:34:44SPEAKER_00: He had a flush.
- 1:34:45SPEAKER_00: He set up a sack against Freeling.
- 1:34:47SPEAKER_00: He had two penalties.
- 1:34:51SPEAKER_00: He's a bit of a bull in a china shop.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_00: If you could settle him down, you know, he does have ability.
- 1:34:58SPEAKER_00: Odin, I don't know.
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_00: How do you pronounce it?
- 1:35:01SPEAKER_00: Odin Bale.
- 1:35:03SPEAKER_00: He is 6'5", 285, 34 on the test, and 35 and a quarter inch arms.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_00: Last year, they gave him a three-year deal for 48, 29-5 guaranteed.
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_00: So they got to get something out of this guy.
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_00: I forgot he made that kind of money.
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_00: He was a second round pick in 21.
- 1:35:23SPEAKER_00: I forget by who.
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:35:26SPEAKER_00: Booker didn't do much.
- 1:35:30SPEAKER_00: Anything else outside?
- 1:35:32SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:35:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, now the linebacker.
- 1:35:35SPEAKER_00: So Tremaine Edmonds is gone.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_00: So you're starting Devin Bush, just like Green Bay starting Jair Franklin.
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_00: Major move there.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_00: So Bush played virtually every snap.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_00: My comment was he offered very little.
- 1:35:55SPEAKER_00: Franklin was a hell of a lot more active.
- 1:35:57SPEAKER_00: You know, Bush has had injuries, his first round pick in 2019.
- 1:36:02SPEAKER_00: 5'11", 231, ran 4'4", 5 coming out, 27 on the test, a 40.5 bird.
- 1:36:11SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_00: So he was a blow-em-up, take-on guy to spite his size.
- 1:36:15SPEAKER_00: But in this game, I saw him get pancaked in the hole.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_00: He missed a tackle.
- 1:36:20SPEAKER_00: He had one knockdown, one fumble recovery.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:36:26SPEAKER_00: We got to see.
- 1:36:27SPEAKER_00: And Edwards played every snap, missed a couple tackles.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_00: He's a good player.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_00: We know all about him.
- 1:36:31SPEAKER_00: Now the secondary.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_00: The interesting cat, Kyler Gordon.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_00: They don't even know if he's coming back with what he's got.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_00: He's the nickelback.
- 1:36:40SPEAKER_00: Kobe Bryant's out for the year.
- 1:36:42SPEAKER_00: They're high paid safety.
- 1:36:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're hurting.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_00: They got two of their top five guys hurting.
- 1:36:47SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:36:48SPEAKER_00: So at nickel, they're playing Malik Muhammad, a fourth round pick.
- 1:36:55SPEAKER_00: From where?
- 1:36:56SPEAKER_00: Washington, I believe, or Texas.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:37:00SPEAKER_00: Six foot, 188, 445.
- 1:37:01SPEAKER_00: So he's got numbers.
- 1:37:02SPEAKER_00: 39, Burt.
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_00: Played really good, Tyler.
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_00: He had a breakup on an end.
- 1:37:08SPEAKER_00: A great stretched out interception.
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_00: Man coverage against Coker across the field was a hell of a play.
- 1:37:16SPEAKER_00: He got beat by the tight end, Waller, crosser for 17.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_00: Late third, he got beat...
- 1:37:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, no, he broke up a ball in McMillan on fourth down,
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_00: fourth and three, and the next play was a touchdown to help break the game open.
- 1:37:34SPEAKER_00: And then Coker beat him across the middle for 13.
- 1:37:36SPEAKER_00: So Mohamed can run.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_00: He's got length,
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_00: and he's got to come through because they don't know Gordon,
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_00: who's a hell of a player, if he can come back.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_00: On the outside, Stevenson was really average, and Jalen Johnson, he couldn't handle.
- 1:37:52SPEAKER_00: Jalen had a rough game.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_00: Stop and go to Coker, gain of 26.
- 1:37:57SPEAKER_00: Cross to Coker, 17, man coverage.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_00: Got deked by scrambling Bryce Young, gain of seven.
- 1:38:06SPEAKER_00: He had loose eyes on a scramble.
- 1:38:08SPEAKER_00: The running back, Brooks, goes deep behind him, gain of 48.
- 1:38:12SPEAKER_00: And he did force a fumble on the receiver, McMillan.
- 1:38:17SPEAKER_00: Stevenson, we know about him now.
- 1:38:19SPEAKER_00: Thenaman, the first time we've seen the first round pick the safety from Purdue and Oregon.
- 1:38:27SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:38:28SPEAKER_00: A good first impression.
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, I thought he was playing better forward than backward.
- 1:38:34SPEAKER_00: He didn't seem to be challenged backward.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_00: He was more of the line of scrimmage safety.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_00: Good close.
- 1:38:42SPEAKER_00: He tackled well on the flats.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_00: Nice underneath coverage, had a knockdown on a really well-timed blitz.
- 1:38:48SPEAKER_00: Pretty good.
- 1:38:50SPEAKER_00: And then the other safety was Cam Lewis, who you know from Buffalo, Tyler.
- 1:38:55SPEAKER_00: Xavier Woods was supposed to start as a replacement for Kobe Bryant, but Woods was injured.
- 1:39:02SPEAKER_00: So Lewis, you know, he's been in the league.
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_00: This is his eighth year.
- 1:39:06SPEAKER_00: He's 5093, 183, 451.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_00: Only 14 on the test, which is low for a safety, but he filled fast, man.
- 1:39:19SPEAKER_00: This guy was running in there and run support.
- 1:39:22SPEAKER_00: He played some slot.
- 1:39:23SPEAKER_00: I thought he showed some coverage ability and man coverage.
- 1:39:27SPEAKER_00: They played a lot of man.
- 1:39:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know,
- 1:39:30SPEAKER_00: Carolina is not the greatest threat,
- 1:39:32SPEAKER_00: but so their safety is a problem just like it is in, uh, in Detroit.
- 1:39:38SPEAKER_00: And, um, Maybe Minnesota.
- 1:39:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's it there.
- 1:39:43SPEAKER_00: Santos, he's automatic.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_00: Taylor only punted twice.
- 1:39:47SPEAKER_00: Raymond had a 23-yard punt return.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_00: They had a takeaway.
- 1:39:53SPEAKER_00: Carolina fumbled a punt.
- 1:39:55SPEAKER_00: Oding Bale blocked an extra point.
- 1:39:58SPEAKER_00: Adunze recovered an onside kick.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_00: So 59 points for the Bears.
- 1:40:02SPEAKER_00: That's it, T.
- 1:40:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and you know what?
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_01: I actually misspoke earlier.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_01: Chicago didn't get a two for one there.
- 1:40:12SPEAKER_01: Carolina did make it 31-31,
- 1:40:14SPEAKER_01: so that's even more impressive for Chicago to just keep that foot on
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_01: the accelerator, and they did it in a sustainable way.
- 1:40:24SPEAKER_01: I get it,
- 1:40:25SPEAKER_01: the injuries to Carolina,
- 1:40:26SPEAKER_01: but you're right,
- 1:40:27SPEAKER_01: Darnell Wright, Jonah Jackson, the way that they just mauled this defense.
- 1:40:31SPEAKER_01: I don't care who's on the other side.
- 1:40:34SPEAKER_01: This was when the Bears were at their best last season.
- 1:40:36SPEAKER_01: This brought back memories of Black Friday against Philadelphia,
- 1:40:40SPEAKER_01: the defending champs,
- 1:40:41SPEAKER_01: and they just were owning them in the trenches in
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_01: a way I hadn't seen Philly get pushed around.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_01: It felt like that iteration of the Bears.
- 1:40:50SPEAKER_01: And then if you've got a more experienced Caleb Williams,
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_01: more command of the offense,
- 1:40:54SPEAKER_01: a better slot there in Kalief Raymond, who was great in this game.
- 1:40:57SPEAKER_01: Hell, like I said,
- 1:40:58SPEAKER_01: Colson Loveland wasn't even needed in this game,
- 1:41:01SPEAKER_01: and he might be your best weapon of them all.
- 1:41:04SPEAKER_01: It does strike me as an offense in the way that they're constructed that can do this.
- 1:41:09SPEAKER_01: Maybe not 59 points.
- 1:41:10SPEAKER_01: They're going to put up points,
- 1:41:11SPEAKER_01: but they might have to as well because I don't think the problems
- 1:41:14SPEAKER_01: on defense can just get fixed overnight anyways.
- 1:41:17SPEAKER_01: It's going to take a while.
- 1:41:18SPEAKER_01: They're going to have to win shootouts.
- 1:41:20SPEAKER_01: Is that way of winning sustainable?
- 1:41:25SPEAKER_01: It might be the way the offense looked.
- 1:41:28SPEAKER_01: I can't wait again for this matchup with Minnesota and this Flores defense
- 1:41:32SPEAKER_01: to see – They can create a turnover or two.
- 1:41:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, is Caleb on that offensive line just going to tame Flores?
- 1:41:41SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:41:41SPEAKER_00: If he does, boy, wow, what an indicator of litmus test.
- 1:41:46SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:41:46SPEAKER_01: what's crazy is for as much as Flores blitzed Love and the Packers,
- 1:41:51SPEAKER_01: Cashman said himself, we have to earn the right to blitz.
- 1:41:53SPEAKER_01: We have to stop the run.
- 1:41:56SPEAKER_01: You have to stop it to an extent to get in position to call the craziest pressures
- 1:42:02SPEAKER_01: that you've got up your sleeve.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_01: Are they going to be able to stop Chicago's run?
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:42:07SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:42:11SPEAKER_00: It's a lot better than the Carolina defense, though, no doubt.
- 1:42:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's look at the Lions.
- 1:42:21SPEAKER_00: Not a real impressive show, man.
- 1:42:26SPEAKER_00: So they beat New Orleans.
- 1:42:29SPEAKER_00: Might pick to win the South.
- 1:42:31SPEAKER_00: They're all 0-4, I think.
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_00: All right, let's just look at it.
- 1:42:36SPEAKER_00: Drew Petsing,
- 1:42:39SPEAKER_00: it was the Gibbs show,
- 1:42:41SPEAKER_00: you know, Jamar Gibbs, 34 touches, 186 yards, I think 156 and 30 in the air.
- 1:42:50SPEAKER_00: So that's what they're doing.
- 1:42:53SPEAKER_00: The receivers, terrible opener for Jamison Williams.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_00: That guy, Tyler, a couple drops, a floss fumble.
- 1:43:03SPEAKER_00: Your favorite.
- 1:43:04SPEAKER_00: He picked up that fumble.
- 1:43:10SPEAKER_00: They paid him.
- 1:43:12SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:43:16SPEAKER_00: So this is a team because I get the Detroit papers and read them every day.
- 1:43:20SPEAKER_00: So I've been reading about that's the one team, the only team I've read about.
- 1:43:25SPEAKER_00: St. Brown is St. Brown.
- 1:43:27SPEAKER_00: We know him.
- 1:43:28SPEAKER_00: Laporta, physically, he's fine.
- 1:43:31SPEAKER_00: We know, okay, Tesla,
- 1:43:33SPEAKER_00: the number three, didn't even hardly, didn't catch a ball, almost never targeted.
- 1:43:38SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to get to the new stuff here, interest of time.
- 1:43:42SPEAKER_00: Conklin, who's been around forever, back up tight end.
- 1:43:45SPEAKER_00: Brock Wright's back from bad injury.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_00: He's kind of a blocker.
- 1:43:49SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the offensive line, okay?
- 1:43:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:43:55SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:43:56SPEAKER_00: Sewell goes to left, right?
- 1:43:58SPEAKER_00: Decker retires.
- 1:44:00SPEAKER_00: All right, how'd Sewell look at left?
- 1:44:04SPEAKER_00: New Orleans is an ambitious, feisty,
- 1:44:08SPEAKER_00: interesting team with Brandon Staley,
- 1:44:11SPEAKER_00: who was on the Ram staff when Goff was with him out there.
- 1:44:16SPEAKER_00: Sewell, okay, so he moves to left tackle for the first time in the pros.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_00: He had a false start.
- 1:44:23SPEAKER_00: He got beat by Vernon Broughton.
- 1:44:27SPEAKER_00: But he's so quick, Sewell.
- 1:44:29SPEAKER_00: You know, he gets beat, Tyler.
- 1:44:31SPEAKER_00: It's like Mark Tauscher on steroids.
- 1:44:35SPEAKER_00: He just reacts and he gets back in the phase so fast.
- 1:44:39SPEAKER_00: He gets knocked off or something and he's just so quick.
- 1:44:43SPEAKER_00: And then a lot of times, he takes two in the run game, you know.
- 1:44:48SPEAKER_00: He'll throw a guy to the left and then continue on downfield.
- 1:44:53SPEAKER_00: Really helped Gibbs, man.
- 1:44:58SPEAKER_00: He moves to right tackle on short yardage.
- 1:45:01SPEAKER_00: He goes over there and he killed Belton one time on a one yard touch on a touchdown.
- 1:45:10SPEAKER_00: He gave up a strict strip sack 2.9 seconds.
- 1:45:15SPEAKER_00: I mean, he had those protection lapses last year.
- 1:45:19SPEAKER_00: He's not all world, but he's certainly solid.
- 1:45:23SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to the right tackle.
- 1:45:26SPEAKER_01: This is the rookie.
- 1:45:28SPEAKER_00: Blake Miller from Clemson.
- 1:45:30SPEAKER_00: Clemson has never had a first round offensive lineman before.
- 1:45:34SPEAKER_00: It's been a graveyard for offensive linemen.
- 1:45:36SPEAKER_00: So let's look at Miller.
- 1:45:37SPEAKER_00: He plays all 77 snaps.
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_00: He's six,
- 1:45:40SPEAKER_00: six and a half,
- 1:45:42SPEAKER_00: 318, ran 505, 32 on the bench, 34 and a quarter arm, nine and three quarter hand.
- 1:45:50SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:45:50SPEAKER_00: How'd he look?
- 1:45:52SPEAKER_00: He looks thin, Tyler.
- 1:45:53SPEAKER_00: He's got thin legs, almost like a tight end body.
- 1:45:57SPEAKER_00: Um, He moves good, real good.
- 1:46:00SPEAKER_00: Now he's up against that veteran,
- 1:46:02SPEAKER_00: Carl Granderson, eight-year guy who I've always liked over the years.
- 1:46:06SPEAKER_00: He's pretty agile.
- 1:46:08SPEAKER_00: He's pretty quick.
- 1:46:09SPEAKER_00: He was laid off the ball and gave up a sack to Granderson.
- 1:46:13SPEAKER_00: It was like he never even contested it.
- 1:46:20SPEAKER_00: First game, he's going to Buffalo Thursday night.
- 1:46:23SPEAKER_00: It was okay.
- 1:46:25SPEAKER_00: It wasn't great.
- 1:46:26SPEAKER_00: I thought the right guard,
- 1:46:27SPEAKER_00: Ratledge,
- 1:46:27SPEAKER_00: who you did the big interview and the big stories on, he's getting movement now.
- 1:46:33SPEAKER_00: He looks like he's thrown his – he looks more sure of himself, I thought.
- 1:46:38SPEAKER_00: He gave up a knockdown at – oh, man.
- 1:46:40SPEAKER_00: That Caden Ellis, Luther Ellis' son, he's a hell of a linebacker, Tyler.
- 1:46:46SPEAKER_00: That guy's a good player, 55.
- 1:46:49SPEAKER_00: He had a holding penalty against that kind of a thick, effective nose tackle, Dave and God show.
- 1:46:56SPEAKER_00: He's a powerful, he pancaked a
- 1:47:02SPEAKER_00: player, and he had a half a bad run.
- 1:47:06SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the center.
- 1:47:07SPEAKER_00: Now they wanted to start, they paid,
- 1:47:15SPEAKER_00: what did they pay?
- 1:47:20SPEAKER_00: The guy from Carolina, Mays,
- 1:47:23SPEAKER_00: Cade Mays, and he bust his wrist, so he's out for about, Month to month and a half.
- 1:47:28SPEAKER_00: So they got Juice Scruggs, former Penn State guy from the Texans.
- 1:47:32SPEAKER_00: How was Scruggs in this game?
- 1:47:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:47:37SPEAKER_00: He's not a great athlete.
- 1:47:39SPEAKER_00: 6'3", 303, ran bad, 5'2", 8".
- 1:47:42SPEAKER_00: He was a second round pick.
- 1:47:44SPEAKER_00: Arms length's okay.
- 1:47:47SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:47:49SPEAKER_00: The left guard, they started Christian Mahogany.
- 1:47:52SPEAKER_00: He lasted 11 plays, hurt his hip.
- 1:47:55SPEAKER_00: They don't think he's playing Thursday night.
- 1:47:57SPEAKER_00: He did not look great on third and one.
- 1:47:59SPEAKER_00: He got beat bad.
- 1:48:01SPEAKER_00: So now they come with former Jacksonville guy, Ben Bartsch and the former Niner.
- 1:48:08SPEAKER_00: So Bartsch will be there Thursday night against the Bills.
- 1:48:11SPEAKER_00: He's a fourth round pick in 2020.
- 1:48:15SPEAKER_00: Six, five and a half, 309, 24 on the test.
- 1:48:19SPEAKER_00: Short arms, 32 and 7'8", and tiny hands, 9.
- 1:48:24SPEAKER_00: He's getting minimum wage.
- 1:48:26SPEAKER_00: All right, how did he look?
- 1:48:27SPEAKER_00: He played 66 snaps in relief of mahogany.
- 1:48:31SPEAKER_00: He's upright, stiff.
- 1:48:32SPEAKER_00: His balance is questionable.
- 1:48:37SPEAKER_00: He gave up half a bad run.
- 1:48:38SPEAKER_00: He gave up another bad run to Shepard.
- 1:48:41SPEAKER_00: He had a bad run versus Colby Wooden.
- 1:48:44SPEAKER_00: He does look to finish.
- 1:48:47SPEAKER_00: He had a holding penalty on first and goal from the one that eventually
- 1:48:51SPEAKER_00: the Lions had to settle for a field goal.
- 1:48:54SPEAKER_00: He looks to finish.
- 1:48:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, I think he's a really smart football player, but he is more of a backup type guy.
- 1:49:05SPEAKER_00: That left guard is a problem, and they need Mays back at center to replace Scruggs.
- 1:49:11SPEAKER_00: And, okay, that's the line.
- 1:49:14SPEAKER_00: Quarterback, Goff was unchanged.
- 1:49:16SPEAKER_00: There's nothing to say there.
- 1:49:19SPEAKER_00: Gibbs, great game, running inside.
- 1:49:23SPEAKER_00: He ran backwards a lot, but I mean, he's quick cutting.
- 1:49:25SPEAKER_00: He's physical.
- 1:49:27SPEAKER_00: They're going to ride him.
- 1:49:29SPEAKER_00: Can he hold up?
- 1:49:29SPEAKER_00: Who knows?
- 1:49:30SPEAKER_00: Most backs don't hold up.
- 1:49:32SPEAKER_00: He played 74% of the snaps in a game that went to OT.
- 1:49:37SPEAKER_00: And now he's got to come back three days later, four days later, and go to Buffalo.
- 1:49:42SPEAKER_00: Oof.
- 1:49:43SPEAKER_00: The number two, Pacheco, who, I mean, I loved him in Kansas City.
- 1:49:48SPEAKER_00: Well, he's got a bad injury, and he's out at least 12 weeks now.
- 1:49:52SPEAKER_00: They just said that today.
- 1:49:53SPEAKER_00: I heard Campbell on the radio.
- 1:49:56SPEAKER_00: They got no backup.
- 1:49:57SPEAKER_00: They got Bakke, that safety from Washington.
- 1:50:00SPEAKER_00: This is his third year there.
- 1:50:02SPEAKER_00: They play him over Sailors, the kick returner.
- 1:50:05SPEAKER_00: They got Bakke and Sailors.
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_00: They got to get another back.
- 1:50:09SPEAKER_00: On the sack that Sewell gave up, Bakke runs into him on a chip.
- 1:50:13SPEAKER_00: Give a sack to Vocky over Sewell.
- 1:50:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, he has problems in pass protection.
- 1:50:25SPEAKER_00: They got a problem with backup running back, just like Green Bay does.
- 1:50:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's it on the offense.
- 1:50:31SPEAKER_00: Go to the D, Tyler.
- 1:50:32SPEAKER_01: Sounds good.
- 1:50:33SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:50:34SPEAKER_00: Aleem McNeil, you know, he came back from the ACL in 2024.
- 1:50:39SPEAKER_00: We talked about him.
- 1:50:40SPEAKER_00: He was a shell of himself last year.
- 1:50:42SPEAKER_00: He played on guts.
- 1:50:44SPEAKER_00: Now he's come back this year.
- 1:50:45SPEAKER_00: They're talking him up in training camp.
- 1:50:48SPEAKER_00: He's very average in this game.
- 1:50:50SPEAKER_00: He was okay.
- 1:50:52SPEAKER_00: Now, Tyleek Williams, the guy from Ohio State, the first-round pick in 2025.
- 1:50:58SPEAKER_00: He's a really stout guy, Tyler.
- 1:51:00SPEAKER_00: He replaces DJ Reader.
- 1:51:03SPEAKER_00: He showed some pass rush on the final play of the game when the Saints went for
- 1:51:09SPEAKER_00: the win on a two-point conversion.
- 1:51:11SPEAKER_00: He got the hurry.
- 1:51:12SPEAKER_00: He bull rushed a really good center, Eric McCoy, and that's why Shaw had to hurry that pass.
- 1:51:20SPEAKER_00: The interesting player here was the sixth-round pick from,
- 1:51:27SPEAKER_00: I think it's Northern Illinois, Skyler Gil Howard, number 50.
- 1:51:33SPEAKER_00: All right, this guy's interesting.
- 1:51:36SPEAKER_00: Six foot, one half inch, 280, ran 507.
- 1:51:40SPEAKER_00: So he's an undersized three tech and he's a pass rusher.
- 1:51:43SPEAKER_00: Well, he ends up, they love him so much.
- 1:51:45SPEAKER_00: He played 47 snaps.
- 1:51:48SPEAKER_00: Williams played 35.
- 1:51:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, Howard.
- 1:51:56SPEAKER_00: He had about four pressures.
- 1:51:59SPEAKER_00: He's a handle.
- 1:52:02SPEAKER_00: He's quick.
- 1:52:03SPEAKER_00: He's active.
- 1:52:06SPEAKER_00: I've seen him in interviews.
- 1:52:07SPEAKER_00: He looks like a really quick-minded guy.
- 1:52:11SPEAKER_00: Now he gets his ass kicked at times.
- 1:52:14SPEAKER_00: The right guards, Cesar Ruiz, got him on a point of attack run for a gain of eight.
- 1:52:19SPEAKER_00: He just got blown out of there.
- 1:52:20SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's light.
- 1:52:22SPEAKER_00: And so they're going to have to try to get him in there when it's going to be a passing play.
- 1:52:28SPEAKER_00: But he could be a threat with McNeil inside.
- 1:52:31SPEAKER_00: The rush looked pretty good.
- 1:52:32SPEAKER_00: Hutchinson didn't.
- 1:52:33SPEAKER_00: You know something about Hutchinson?
- 1:52:36SPEAKER_00: It just occurred to me.
- 1:52:37SPEAKER_00: He starts games really slow.
- 1:52:40SPEAKER_00: He does not do it in the first half.
- 1:52:42SPEAKER_00: He starts slow.
- 1:52:43SPEAKER_00: That's the same thing happened here.
- 1:52:44SPEAKER_00: He had two sacks.
- 1:52:46SPEAKER_00: But, I mean, other games he's had eight pressures, no sacks when he played great.
- 1:52:50SPEAKER_00: Here he had two sacks, only four pressures.
- 1:52:53SPEAKER_00: I thought he was pretty average.
- 1:52:54SPEAKER_00: DJ Wanham is the other starter, played almost as much as Hutchinson.
- 1:52:59SPEAKER_00: He had two battered balls.
- 1:53:00SPEAKER_00: He had a fumble recovery and a flush.
- 1:53:02SPEAKER_00: He's a pretty tough player.
- 1:53:03SPEAKER_00: I liked him in Minnesota.
- 1:53:05SPEAKER_00: And then they're playing free agents, Still and Lacey a little bit.
- 1:53:09SPEAKER_00: All right, let's go to the linebackers.
- 1:53:13SPEAKER_00: Barnes played really good in this game.
- 1:53:16SPEAKER_00: He had a pick, a great pick.
- 1:53:18SPEAKER_00: He had a sack, a tackle for loss.
- 1:53:21SPEAKER_00: Played good football.
- 1:53:22SPEAKER_00: Campbell played all, they played 90 snaps on defense, Tyler.
- 1:53:26SPEAKER_00: How's that going to be for them Thursday night?
- 1:53:28SPEAKER_00: Pick the bills, man.
- 1:53:30SPEAKER_00: 90 snaps.
- 1:53:32SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:53:32SPEAKER_00: Campbell played them all.
- 1:53:34SPEAKER_00: He's just a wall, man.
- 1:53:36SPEAKER_00: He stays square and he smashes.
- 1:53:38SPEAKER_00: Now he got beat for the tying touchdown over there by the tight end.
- 1:53:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, Jawan Johnson beat him in man coverage.
- 1:53:45SPEAKER_00: He missed the jam nine yard touchdown that tied it.
- 1:53:50SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 1:53:53SPEAKER_00: Touchdown killed by McCoy.
- 1:53:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, a running play, but eight yard touchdown.
- 1:53:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's not perfect.
- 1:53:58SPEAKER_00: He got killed by the center of McCoy.
- 1:54:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, then Derek Barnes, Devin White, the ex-Buck pro bowler, very average.
- 1:54:10SPEAKER_00: He only played 18 snaps, didn't really do anything.
- 1:54:14SPEAKER_00: Rodriguez, the other inside backer, Malcolm, played 20 snaps.
- 1:54:19SPEAKER_00: He was just average.
- 1:54:20SPEAKER_00: Now let's go to the secondary.
- 1:54:22SPEAKER_00: And this is their weak link, T. Now, they showed a lot of pressure.
- 1:54:26SPEAKER_00: And they didn't even – inactive was the star of training camp,
- 1:54:30SPEAKER_00: Ahmed Hassanin, a sixth-round pick in 2025.
- 1:54:34SPEAKER_00: So they didn't even give him a uniform.
- 1:54:38SPEAKER_00: All right, the secondary.
- 1:54:41SPEAKER_00: So Branch and Joseph are in reserve categories.
- 1:54:45SPEAKER_00: Who knows when they play?
- 1:54:47SPEAKER_00: All right, the starting safeties.
- 1:54:49SPEAKER_00: You've got Clark, Chuck Clark.
- 1:54:52SPEAKER_00: 41 snaps.
- 1:54:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's a tough guy.
- 1:54:55SPEAKER_00: He plays like a linebacker.
- 1:54:57SPEAKER_00: He's heady, savvy, positions well.
- 1:55:01SPEAKER_00: Can he run?
- 1:55:02SPEAKER_00: I don't think so.
- 1:55:05SPEAKER_00: Chuck Clark coming out ran 4.55.
- 1:55:07SPEAKER_00: That was nine years ago.
- 1:55:09SPEAKER_00: He's 22 on the test.
- 1:55:11SPEAKER_00: He's a smart guy and he's a hitter.
- 1:55:14SPEAKER_00: You get him matched up.
- 1:55:15SPEAKER_00: The other safety Oh, my, Tyler.
- 1:55:18SPEAKER_00: The Bills are going to get after this club.
- 1:55:19SPEAKER_00: Avante Maddox, a former corner safety for the Eagles and whoever.
- 1:55:25SPEAKER_00: Maddox has been in the league a long time.
- 1:55:28SPEAKER_00: He gave up plays.
- 1:55:29SPEAKER_00: He's been in it nine years.
- 1:55:33SPEAKER_00: His heart's on the right plays.
- 1:55:35SPEAKER_00: He will go and hit anything.
- 1:55:37SPEAKER_00: But he gives up plays.
- 1:55:40SPEAKER_00: Touchdown on a slant.
- 1:55:43SPEAKER_00: Slot to Valle, 31.
- 1:55:46SPEAKER_00: All right, the starting corners.
- 1:55:48SPEAKER_00: You got Reed, and he got victimized.
- 1:55:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, Olave had a field day in this game with Sho.
- 1:55:54SPEAKER_00: He gave up 14-yard touchdown,
- 1:55:57SPEAKER_00: 47-yard bomb, 19-yard comeback, 42-yard post, out-muscled at the ball.
- 1:56:03SPEAKER_00: He's their number one corner.
- 1:56:04SPEAKER_00: Rakia Sin, you know, I mean, he's a tough guy.
- 1:56:10SPEAKER_00: He's in the Campbell image.
- 1:56:12SPEAKER_00: We know Yasin.
- 1:56:13SPEAKER_00: We saw him last year.
- 1:56:14SPEAKER_01: But, again, he can't.
- 1:56:17SPEAKER_00: He can't really handle good people.
- 1:56:22SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:56:23SPEAKER_00: They got Abney, a rookie fifth-round pick, who did some stuff in the slot.
- 1:56:28SPEAKER_00: McCrary, the ex-second-round pick.
- 1:56:32SPEAKER_00: He's another tough guy, the kind of guy they want, but can he run?
- 1:56:35SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 1:56:35SPEAKER_00: He ran 4-5-2 coming out five years ago.
- 1:56:39SPEAKER_00: He had a strip sack.
- 1:56:40SPEAKER_00: He blew a sack.
- 1:56:41SPEAKER_00: They use him in pressure.
- 1:56:45SPEAKER_00: I think he's an okay player.
- 1:56:47SPEAKER_00: Now, special teams, Bates was fine.
- 1:56:51SPEAKER_00: Fox had a great day.
- 1:56:53SPEAKER_00: Seven punts, 48-0, 42-1, 4-9-1.
- 1:56:57SPEAKER_00: Tom Kennedy replaces Kalief Raymond as the dual return guy.
- 1:57:02SPEAKER_00: Had a really good game returning.
- 1:57:04SPEAKER_00: And that's it with the Lions, Tyler.
- 1:57:09SPEAKER_01: Tom Kennedy, who's been there forever.
- 1:57:12SPEAKER_01: He's a great story.
- 1:57:13SPEAKER_01: He's a survivor in this league.
- 1:57:15SPEAKER_00: You had a good chat with him in the locker room last year.
- 1:57:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:57:19SPEAKER_01: And I believe Justin Rogers over at Detroit Football Network did actually talk
- 1:57:23SPEAKER_01: to him at length for a piece.
- 1:57:25SPEAKER_01: Did he?
- 1:57:25SPEAKER_01: That was interesting.
- 1:57:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so Bills-Lions, you're not kidding.
- 1:57:30SPEAKER_01: It's going to be 30-something, 30-something, probably 40-something, the 40-something.
- 1:57:34SPEAKER_01: The Bills are definitely working through it.
- 1:57:37SPEAKER_01: And their new defense with Jim Leonard, too.
- 1:57:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, they gave up big plays to Houston and Required a Greg Russo sack fumble,
- 1:57:46SPEAKER_01: Terrell Bernard recovery late to win.
- 1:57:48SPEAKER_01: It's going to be a fun game.
- 1:57:50SPEAKER_01: I'll be there Thursday night.
- 1:57:51SPEAKER_01: Highmark Stadium, new Highmark Stadium.
- 1:57:54SPEAKER_01: First game in the new, it's massive.
- 1:58:00SPEAKER_01: It's next to Green Bay, which is a unique situation, obviously publicly owned.
- 1:58:05SPEAKER_01: Buffalo is the smallest market in football.
- 1:58:08SPEAKER_01: And to see that big old stadium in the middle of Orchard Park, it kind of blows you away.
- 1:58:13SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:58:13SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:58:43SPEAKER_01: They played in Jacksonville.
- 1:58:44SPEAKER_01: There's the hurricane.
- 1:58:46SPEAKER_01: I'm sticking with my super bowl pick.
- 1:58:48SPEAKER_01: It's the lions.
- 1:58:49SPEAKER_01: They're going to get, get branched back on defense.
- 1:58:53SPEAKER_01: I think he's such a difference maker all over the field.
- 1:58:57SPEAKER_01: But yeah, looking forward to this one.
- 1:58:59SPEAKER_01: Nonetheless, Thursday.
- 1:59:00SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:59:00SPEAKER_01: McGinn memory.
- 1:59:01SPEAKER_01: Let's end it here.
- 1:59:02SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 1:59:04SPEAKER_00: So I was going to do something about cut down day, you know, openers and all that.
- 1:59:08SPEAKER_00: I was thinking about it about a week ago.
- 1:59:10SPEAKER_00: I started thinking and then, To me,
- 1:59:15SPEAKER_00: I'll just, to me,
- 1:59:17SPEAKER_00: the development in the offseason since we last did a podcast was the death
- 1:59:22SPEAKER_00: of Bob Harlan, March 5.
- 1:59:25SPEAKER_00: He was 89.
- 1:59:26SPEAKER_00: So I just want to talk about Bob Harlan.
- 1:59:29SPEAKER_00: And he meant an awful lot to me, Tyler.
- 1:59:36SPEAKER_00: And a lot of the stuff I got from a feature I wrote at the Green Bay Press Gazette
- 1:59:39SPEAKER_00: when he was going to become...
- 1:59:42SPEAKER_00: President in 1989.
- 1:59:46SPEAKER_00: You know, as much as he helped me, he never once asked for a favor.
- 1:59:54SPEAKER_00: He never asked for any favoritism.
- 1:59:56SPEAKER_00: He never, he almost never went off the record.
- 2:00:02SPEAKER_00: He returned almost every call.
- 2:00:05SPEAKER_00: It's like he wanted me as, you know, kind of the writer of record or the paper of record.
- 2:00:11SPEAKER_00: He wanted me to, To know that he was being transparent as much as he could with the fans.
- 2:00:19SPEAKER_00: He understood the role of the press.
- 2:00:22SPEAKER_00: He understood the role of vigorous, unbiased reporting.
- 2:00:27SPEAKER_00: He was a reporter.
- 2:00:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a journalism school grad from Marquette University.
- 2:00:31SPEAKER_00: He worked at the Milwaukee Journal weekends for two years in school.
- 2:00:36SPEAKER_00: He was sports editor of his school paper.
- 2:00:39SPEAKER_00: His first job out of Marquette was at UPI in Milwaukee.
- 2:00:43SPEAKER_00: And his goal was to write sports for the Des Moines Register,
- 2:00:47SPEAKER_00: which was one hell of a paper back in the day.
- 2:00:50SPEAKER_00: He was sports information director at Marquette from 59 to 65 and PR director of
- 2:00:57SPEAKER_00: the St. Louis baseball Cardinals from 65 to 71.
- 2:01:06SPEAKER_00: I don't think he ever complained about anything I wrote.
- 2:01:16SPEAKER_00: And there were a lot of controversies.
- 2:01:19SPEAKER_00: I won't, George Perlis, John Jones, Dick Cork, Forrest Gregg, Jason Weed.
- 2:01:25SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 2:01:25SPEAKER_00: there was all kinds of things that went on in Green Bay and the new stadium
- 2:01:30SPEAKER_00: the remodeling in the stadium.
- 2:01:33SPEAKER_00: But this was,
- 2:01:34SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:01:34SPEAKER_00: a man of the people and he was the first non Green Bay native ever
- 2:01:39SPEAKER_00: to become president of this team.
- 2:01:41SPEAKER_00: He was an ambassador for the franchise.
- 2:01:45SPEAKER_00: He moved to town in 71 to do contracts and kind of do some finance under Dan Devine.
- 2:01:51SPEAKER_00: And he had a red brick house on the southwest side, a ranch house.
- 2:01:55SPEAKER_00: That was in 71.
- 2:01:57SPEAKER_00: And that's where he lived his entire life, 55 years.
- 2:02:03SPEAKER_00: Went on a double date at Marquette.
- 2:02:07SPEAKER_00: And his wife, Maddie, she was with the other guy.
- 2:02:12SPEAKER_00: And they hit each other, hit it up.
- 2:02:15SPEAKER_00: They were married one week after Maddie graduated from Marquette.
- 2:02:23SPEAKER_00: And Kevin Harlan,
- 2:02:24SPEAKER_00: we all know Kevin Harlan, was born nine months and nine days after the wedding.
- 2:02:33SPEAKER_01: That's incredible.
- 2:02:34SPEAKER_00: Well done.
- 2:02:35SPEAKER_00: Well done, Bob.
- 2:02:37SPEAKER_00: And then Brian Harlan came along a year after that.
- 2:02:41SPEAKER_00: And then Mike Harlan, like seven years after that, they had three sons.
- 2:02:45SPEAKER_00: So Kevin, we know, is one of the great broadcasters of all time.
- 2:02:50SPEAKER_00: The first week I was at the Green Bay Press-Gazette covering high schools,
- 2:02:54SPEAKER_00: Kevin was a sophomore at Green Bay-Permontre High School.
- 2:02:57SPEAKER_00: I go into the gym to cover a game, and I'm sitting at the press table 10 rows up.
- 2:03:01SPEAKER_00: I'm at one end,
- 2:03:02SPEAKER_00: and down the other end is Kevin broadcasting for
- 2:03:05SPEAKER_00: the Permontre student radio station, 50-watt power.
- 2:03:08SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 2:03:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's down there on the end by himself.
- 2:03:13SPEAKER_00: And Brian,
- 2:03:14SPEAKER_00: you know, at 27,
- 2:03:15SPEAKER_00: he was the youngest PR director in the NFL when he got that job for the Bears.
- 2:03:19SPEAKER_00: Brian then represented, he represents the Harbaugh's now and PJ Fleck.
- 2:03:26SPEAKER_00: He's in Chicago representing sports personalities and NFL coaches.
- 2:03:31SPEAKER_00: And Mike, I saw his speech online, his eulogy, and he's a great young man too.
- 2:03:38SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 2:03:40SPEAKER_00: A couple other things.
- 2:03:43SPEAKER_00: In 89, when I did that story, Bob was a trim 174.
- 2:03:48SPEAKER_00: I'd peg him at 511.
- 2:03:50SPEAKER_00: He walked 40 minutes every day in the stadium.
- 2:03:53SPEAKER_00: He would walk around the stadium.
- 2:03:55SPEAKER_00: He never took a vacation longer than one week at that point in his life.
- 2:03:59SPEAKER_00: He read four papers a day,
- 2:04:01SPEAKER_00: including the DeWoyne Register,
- 2:04:03SPEAKER_00: which arrived at his home in Southwest Green Bay by mail.
- 2:04:08SPEAKER_00: He got his suits.
- 2:04:09SPEAKER_00: I said, where do you shop, Bob?
- 2:04:10SPEAKER_00: He said, Haberdasher in Green Bay.
- 2:04:15SPEAKER_00: He was a massive college basketball fan.
- 2:04:18SPEAKER_00: He just hunkered down on Saturday and Sunday all weekend long in the winter.
- 2:04:23SPEAKER_00: It was cold Green Bay winters watching hoops.
- 2:04:28SPEAKER_00: He never had a holdout.
- 2:04:30SPEAKER_00: And that's when I was dealing with him initially from 79 until he moved up in 84.
- 2:04:35SPEAKER_00: And then Chuck Hutchison took over under Greg and they had a million holdouts.
- 2:04:39SPEAKER_00: But he went through Bruce Clark, that hassle, Mike Butler.
- 2:04:43SPEAKER_00: The toughest negotiation he ever had was James Lofton with Jerry Argowitz, the dentist agent.
- 2:04:53SPEAKER_00: He never had a player miss a regular season game.
- 2:04:55SPEAKER_00: I think maybe he never had a guy miss an exhibition game.
- 2:04:59SPEAKER_00: He said Lofton was the toughest negotiation he ever had.
- 2:05:02SPEAKER_00: Brian once told me that When Bob heard his back shoveling snow in 1976,
- 2:05:10SPEAKER_00: his back was never the same again.
- 2:05:13SPEAKER_00: He was a two handicap high school golfer at Dowling High School in Des Moines.
- 2:05:22SPEAKER_00: He loved country and western music.
- 2:05:24SPEAKER_00: His mom Alice died in 2000 at age 88.
- 2:05:28SPEAKER_00: She lived in the same house the family moved into in 1939.
- 2:05:33SPEAKER_00: His dad was a truck driver who eventually moved up and bought that trucking company.
- 2:05:39SPEAKER_00: I asked him, Bob, well, how were your grades in high school at Dowling?
- 2:05:42SPEAKER_00: He said, all around a B, B average.
- 2:05:45SPEAKER_00: I said, what was your grade point at Marquette?
- 2:05:48SPEAKER_00: He said, two, five, two, six.
- 2:05:51SPEAKER_00: The guy was just forthcoming, man.
- 2:05:52SPEAKER_00: He was like that on everything.
- 2:05:55SPEAKER_00: You know, I told him this in a couple of cards over the years.
- 2:06:01SPEAKER_00: I said, the one family the Harlins are like that I've encountered really anywhere is
- 2:06:07SPEAKER_00: the Bennett family.
- 2:06:09SPEAKER_00: Now, I don't know Ann Bennett,
- 2:06:11SPEAKER_00: I've met her,
- 2:06:12SPEAKER_00: but this is Dick Bennett's wife and his brother Jack and their son Tony.
- 2:06:18SPEAKER_00: So Dick was an unbelievable interviewer.
- 2:06:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, to this day, he might be the greatest interviewer.
- 2:06:25SPEAKER_00: And I had never hit 15 times in my career covering small colleges and high schools.
- 2:06:31SPEAKER_00: Penetrating beyond belief.
- 2:06:33SPEAKER_00: And Jack Bennett,
- 2:06:34SPEAKER_00: high school coach at Marinette, later at UW-Stevens Point, won a national title.
- 2:06:40SPEAKER_00: Jack was a great guy, just like Dick.
- 2:06:43SPEAKER_00: And Tony,
- 2:06:44SPEAKER_00: when Tony was a freshman at Green Bay Preble,
- 2:06:47SPEAKER_00: I remember covering a regional basketball tournament at Preble and interviewing Tony
- 2:06:52SPEAKER_00: after the game.
- 2:06:52SPEAKER_00: He was a freshman, star of the team.
- 2:06:55SPEAKER_00: And then Tony, I covered him in college a few games.
- 2:06:58SPEAKER_00: And he's an amazing interview, too, an amazing person.
- 2:07:02SPEAKER_00: So I see the Harlins and the Bennett gang much alike.
- 2:07:07SPEAKER_00: Unbelievable families, engaging, personality plus.
- 2:07:14SPEAKER_00: So Bob Harlin, he helped me as much as anybody.
- 2:07:23SPEAKER_00: He knew I wanted to explain the why.
- 2:07:28SPEAKER_00: Whether the Packers look good or not.
- 2:07:29SPEAKER_00: He knew I wanted to explain the why to my readers as a paper of record.
- 2:07:35SPEAKER_00: And he understood he wanted to be, he could have been in my job had fate switched.
- 2:07:43SPEAKER_00: He could have been doing that and he would have been really happy.
- 2:07:47SPEAKER_00: But he returned those calls and unbelievably open.
- 2:07:55SPEAKER_00: To an extent, of course, his allegiance was to the corporation, number one.
- 2:08:00SPEAKER_00: But he really wanted me to know and he wanted the press to know and he wanted me
- 2:08:04SPEAKER_00: to know that he was telling me the truth and being transparent as far as he could.
- 2:08:09SPEAKER_00: So I'll never forget him.
- 2:08:11SPEAKER_00: He's an amazing man.
- 2:08:13SPEAKER_00: That's it, Tyler.
- 2:08:15SPEAKER_01: Man, what a spectacular tribute, Bob.
- 2:08:19SPEAKER_01: That was great.
- 2:08:20SPEAKER_01: I feel like, you know, Bob Harlan...
- 2:08:23SPEAKER_01: He's running the show as the NFL is just driving into an entirely new galaxy
- 2:08:28SPEAKER_01: of interest, right?
- 2:08:31SPEAKER_01: Millions are becoming billions.
- 2:08:33SPEAKER_01: He's got to get Lambeau Field to a different level.
- 2:08:38SPEAKER_01: And the story that I always think of when it comes to Bob Harlan is going door
- 2:08:41SPEAKER_01: to door,
- 2:08:42SPEAKER_01: trying to explain to the locals why they should vote yes on a tax increase for
- 2:08:49SPEAKER_01: the Lambeau Field renovations was like $295 million.
- 2:08:53SPEAKER_01: The turn of the century.
- 2:08:56SPEAKER_01: And I went to the old Lambeau back as a kid.
- 2:08:59SPEAKER_01: And I can remember all the Port-a-Johns around the stadium, right?
- 2:09:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm so glad I was able to see it, what it was like.
- 2:09:07SPEAKER_01: It was archaic then, right?
- 2:09:11SPEAKER_01: As new stadiums are getting built through the mid to late 90s.
- 2:09:15SPEAKER_01: I'm trying to think.
- 2:09:16SPEAKER_01: You got like the Panthers, the Jaguars.
- 2:09:18SPEAKER_01: They're added to the league.
- 2:09:21SPEAKER_01: And so he knew, like, we've got to do something here.
- 2:09:23SPEAKER_01: And I didn't realize, though, and I tell this story to people.
- 2:09:26SPEAKER_01: I actually just sat down with some folks high up with the Bills,
- 2:09:33SPEAKER_01: and they hadn't heard that story before.
- 2:09:35SPEAKER_01: And think about it,
- 2:09:36SPEAKER_01: similar to markets,
- 2:09:37SPEAKER_01: Packers, Bills,
- 2:09:39SPEAKER_01: and an NFL that may be a $1 trillion business by, what, 2032 at the latest season.
- 2:09:48SPEAKER_01: You hear Packers, oh,
- 2:09:51SPEAKER_01: to keep the Packers in Green Bay,
- 2:09:52SPEAKER_01: of course the locals would just vote yes to anything.
- 2:09:55SPEAKER_01: It was close.
- 2:09:57SPEAKER_01: They needed Bob Harlan going door to door to make that 53% to 47% or something like that.
- 2:10:05SPEAKER_00: Or 52-48, I forget which.
- 2:10:07Wow.
- 2:10:09SPEAKER_01: He understood the constituents.
- 2:10:12SPEAKER_01: He understood the essence of the Packers and just what it meant.
- 2:10:18SPEAKER_01: In the community, there wasn't an entitlement.
- 2:10:22SPEAKER_01: You tell me.
- 2:10:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm pretty young here,
- 2:10:25SPEAKER_01: but just covering him and talking to him,
- 2:10:27SPEAKER_01: I imagine it wasn't this holier than thou,
- 2:10:32SPEAKER_01: this entitlement that you might get with this organization or any organization
- 2:10:36SPEAKER_01: with people in charge in the NFL today.
- 2:10:39SPEAKER_01: There's a different type of interpersonal communication with you,
- 2:10:44SPEAKER_01: which is going to, Bleed into how he represents the team at large.
- 2:10:50SPEAKER_00: He told me,
- 2:10:52SPEAKER_00: I like taking my own calls when I asked him about why it was always,
- 2:10:56SPEAKER_00: you know, from the switchboard right to his voice.
- 2:10:59SPEAKER_00: I like taking my own calls.
- 2:11:03SPEAKER_00: Could he do it today?
- 2:11:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I could.
- 2:11:05SPEAKER_00: Sure he could.
- 2:11:06SPEAKER_00: Policy could do it.
- 2:11:07SPEAKER_00: Murphy could have done it.
- 2:11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 2:11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they can do it.
- 2:11:11SPEAKER_00: And to do it, you know, you cast your franchise in a better lot.
- 2:11:17SPEAKER_00: And he was a beloved guy up there.
- 2:11:18SPEAKER_00: There's no question about it.
- 2:11:21SPEAKER_00: And there was a lot of love for the Packers.
- 2:11:25SPEAKER_00: That scene in the 90s when he helped turn that thing around,
- 2:11:28SPEAKER_00: hiring Ron Wolf, then went on and on and on.
- 2:11:31SPEAKER_00: We know.
- 2:11:34SPEAKER_00: That was quite a scene up there those years, Tyler.
- 2:11:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was.
- 2:11:39SPEAKER_00: It was really fun to cover that.
- 2:11:42SPEAKER_01: Great choice, Bob.
- 2:11:43SPEAKER_01: That was awesome.
- 2:11:45SPEAKER_01: Thank you, everyone out there for making this possible.
- 2:11:48SPEAKER_01: We'll be doing this all year.
- 2:11:50SPEAKER_01: NFC North, Packers, Bears, Vikings, Lions.
- 2:11:54SPEAKER_01: And we always mix it up each week on which team we lead with, which theme we lead with.
- 2:11:58SPEAKER_01: So you'll get Bob McGinn and all of his film dissecting glory the entire 2026 NFL season.
- 2:12:06SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much, Bob.
- 2:12:07SPEAKER_01: This was great.
- 2:12:09SPEAKER_01: So good to see you again.
- 2:12:10SPEAKER_01: And we'll catch you all next week.
- 2:12:13SPEAKER_00: All right, Joe.
