- 0:32What is going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:36My name is Scott Swich, I'm the Clydesdale, and I am so honored and privileged to have with me the winner of the 60 to 64 year old women's division, Lynne Watt.
- 0:46Lynne, how are you doing?
- 0:48I'm good, thanks.
- 0:49Thanks for having me.
- 0:51I'm so excited.
- 0:53It's been so much fun getting to know the Masters athletes over these last couple weeks by interviewing the champions.
- 0:59You are the seventh that we've interviewed, so about halfway through the lineup of champions from Legends.
- 1:09And you are in Scotland, correct?
- 1:12Yes, it's the evening here at the moment.
- 1:16I think you're the first ever guest I've had.
- 1:18We've done almost a thousand shows.
- 1:20You're the first ever guest from Scotland.
- 1:22Oh, well, that's good.
- 1:24There you go.
- 1:25It's good to be the first.
- 1:28I don't travel to many competitions.
- 1:32That was going to be my next question.
- 1:34You're in Scotland.
- 1:36Is there a Masters presence in the UK or Europe at all?
- 1:41Not much.
- 1:43Nothing like
- 1:44in America.
- 1:46It's getting better, but you really struggle to find competitions with enough people in your age group that want to compete.
- 1:56it's usually age 40 plus or age 45 plus over here, which is not really ideal when you're 60.
- 2:06So there's not, I think it's growing, it is growing, but it's just not enough for competitions to put on a category for our age group.
- 2:19So yeah, so I don't do that many competitions, to be honest.
- 2:23Yeah, and please forgive me if my internet is making me choppy.
- 2:28If you've been a guest of the show or watched the show, we've been having some problems the last couple weeks.
- 2:36It's funny because, you know, in America, we're still behind a little bit with Masters compared to the elite athletes.
- 2:43Oh, yeah.
- 2:45It sounds like it's even worse of a bigger gap.
- 2:50I should say not worse, a bigger gap in Europe.
- 2:53than it is here definitely for the for the older you know the older end i mean i think there's there's plenty of um 40 year olds and what have you know there's a lot you know a lot there but when it gets to maybe um 45 plus there's there's just not not so many and i mean it will eventually um work its way through but at the moment we don't get an opportunity to compete with our you know each age group
- 3:23over here.
- 3:26So what brought you to CrossFit in the first place?
- 3:33I used to do a lot of boot camp stuff.
- 3:35I was never into one specific sport.
- 3:38I was always very sporty when I was a child, but just did anything.
- 3:43I just liked to join in anything.
- 3:45I played some field hockey.
- 3:48when I was at school, which was a long time ago.
- 3:52But other than that, it's really just been involved in all different things, things in the gym and eventually boot camp type training.
- 4:02So that's what I was doing for a while.
- 4:04And it was called British Military Fitness.
- 4:08So it was kind of military people that took it.
- 4:10So you were crawling in the mud and doing all things like that, which was great.
- 4:14And one of the instructors had said to me, you should try CrossFit, Lynn.
- 4:21You would really like it.
- 4:22You would really like it.
- 4:23And I went, no, no, no, no.
- 4:24I'll stick with my boot camp now.
- 4:26and i stuck with that for maybe a year a couple years and then eventually i decided to go along there was a local um a gym opened a crossfit gym it was it was new and they were putting on in beginners classes so i thought i was getting a bit fed up with my boot camp so i thought i'll go in and try it and they'll see what what it's like
- 4:48And as soon as I went in, I loved it.
- 4:51It was just all the different things you could do.
- 4:54I thought, this is definitely what I'm going to enjoy.
- 4:57So, yes, that's how I got into it.
- 4:59Just one of the instructors at boot camp telling me about it, that there wasn't, I think there was maybe two CrossFit gyms in Edinburgh.
- 5:07Then there wasn't many.
- 5:08There's still not a huge amount, but it's growing more and more.
- 5:12But back then, there wasn't an awful lot.
- 5:15So it was a little bit different.
- 5:17So that's how I got into it.
- 5:18Just being advised, just saying, oh, you would love it then, you know, because I like trying things.
- 5:23I've always liked trying things.
- 5:26And so that's how I got into it in 2017, I think it was, when I was 53.
- 5:29That's when I started it.
- 5:35Yeah, so I was quite old when I started.
- 5:39So you started at 53 and you made it to the CrossFit Games in 2021.
- 5:47So that, about eight years of working at it?
- 5:51No, it wasn't as much.
- 5:54Four years.
- 5:54Four years?
- 5:56Yeah, four years.
- 5:57But yeah, that year I was lucky in a way.
- 6:02We took 20 people that year and I qualified in 19th
- 6:06and totally shocked that I got there.
- 6:10But yeah, so, and I think I finished 12th, I got there.
- 6:14I still felt very green behind the ears.
- 6:17I still felt it was a way, you know,
- 6:19uh beyond me but i had such good fun when i was there unfortunately that was kind of post-covid time where we couldn't travel nobody could come with me i had to go myself because nobody was allowed to travel we had to get um special you know special forms and everything filled in to actually go to america but yeah it was a great experience um yeah so i've been working on my weaknesses since then
- 6:44Yeah, I, that was my, that was my first year at the games as media.
- 6:50And it was, it was a strange year because of the post COVID stuff.
- 6:55Um, and, and there weren't a lot of people there.
- 7:00Is it a goal of yours to get back to the games so you can bring family and friends?
- 7:05yeah yeah uh-huh um i was hoping like now that i've just gone into the 60 uh 60 plus um i was just 60 in august so i kind of thought this could maybe be my one year it is you've got such a short window when you're in the age groups you know you kind of got to be younger
- 7:23you have got outliers you've got some people that can manage to do every year but mostly for most of us it's generally your first year or say you know first or second year within that age group so I'm hoping to I'm carrying a wee bit of an injury at the moment which is a wee bit of a worry but I'm hoping to try and get through the stages and get there the new format the legends
- 7:48I'm actually delighted with that.
- 7:51To me, you're still going to be competing against the best, so it doesn't really matter that it's not attached to what the elites are doing.
- 7:59So yes, my goal is to try and get there, hopefully this year.
- 8:03Fingers crossed.
- 8:05Yeah, the season has been kind of flipped upside down for the Masters.
- 8:10Each stage actually has opened up greatly.
- 8:13Yes.
- 8:15With 25% at quarters, what, 200 at semis?
- 8:19200, I think, yes.
- 8:19Which it was only 30 last year.
- 8:25Yeah, I know.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:26And I think I was 31st or something.
- 8:28I didn't have a great, I just, my training was all over the place for a while, but no, that's, it's not an excuse.
- 8:32That was just the way, that's the way it happens with Master of German.
- 8:35Like, you know, there's always things going on.
- 8:38But yeah, but this year, I think we take 20 in our age group.
- 8:42I think it's going to be 30 for 55 to 59.
- 8:44We take 20, I think, for our age group, which is so much better than just 10.
- 8:50It's just a bit of competition, really.
- 8:52Yeah.
- 8:54so i'm hoping i'm hoping that um i can get there this year we're still waiting to find out of course when when it is and where it is but hopefully we'll find out soon yeah i know if everybody i've talked to that's the biggest frustration is where can we make the plans now those kinds of things so with everything being open bigger along the way like semis and quarters
- 9:23Does it allow you to not hammer the body as hard in those first few phases than you would in the past?
- 9:32Possibly.
- 9:32I think it'll just be...
- 9:35you probably approach it slightly differently because you, you kind of expect to be within that, you know, managed to get through in the open and the, you know, 200, you would like to think you would be in the top 200.
- 9:48So it means you, you can possibly start training for the later stages of, you know what I mean?
- 9:53You don't specifically have to train for the open, then train for, that's what my coach is kind of thinking anyway.
- 9:59So I don't feel that I hammer my,
- 10:04my body too much.
- 10:06The training is hard, but I always take two rest days.
- 10:10I only train five days a day, but I know a lot of people train an awful lot more than that.
- 10:17I never feel that my body's too bad, unless I'm under the weather.
- 10:25But generally, I think my training is quite balanced.
- 10:28I think it does obviously ramp us up the further you get on through the stages.
- 10:34But yeah, hopefully it'll just, it'll not be as tough to sort of think you've got to train for the open and train for the quarters.
- 10:40I think you're thinking a wee bit further ahead in the hope that you can get through the other stages.
- 10:47Yeah, we'll see.
- 10:49We'll see what happens.
- 10:49How long have you been with your current coach?
- 10:52I've been with him coming up two years now.
- 10:57um yeah almost two years um and it's with the is the coach from ward prep i don't know if you've heard from elf ward prep yeah yeah so it's one of one of their coaches so um yeah so he's just like getting to know me and and working on all this stuff that i need um i need to work on i never used i mean i used to just do classes and and just kind of do what
- 11:21you know what i wanted but then what happened actually in in 2000 and 2019 is that the year they had the two the two opens um i think it was they had one at the beginning of the year in one october um i ended up with a um i had to get an emergency eye operation the day before the open started in october um so i kind of lost i had i couldn't train for a while after that
- 11:45And then I started training again and then I had to get another eye operation the following year.
- 11:49So I was out again for six weeks and that's quite a long time for masters.
- 11:53I mean, I couldn't go upside down.
- 11:54I couldn't lift weights.
- 11:56So it was after that I kind of felt I'd lost a lot of confidence, lost a lot of strength.
- 12:00So I decided to actually get somebody to program specifically for me to get me up to scratch.
- 12:06And actually that following year actually made the CrossFit game.
- 12:10So it was a good move to get a one-on-one coach.
- 12:15for me specifically it it's funny because i've um i've had the owner on my show i didn't know they did uh personalized programming for masters i knew they they had a special track for masters and i know they have a lot of like what i want to call classes on specific movements yes they do
- 12:38But I did not know they did personalized programming.
- 12:39That's really cool.
- 12:40They do one-on-one, yeah.
- 12:41I have, yeah.
- 12:43They've got, I think, maybe three or four coaches that do one-on-one.
- 12:47To be honest, I don't know how many they all have.
- 12:49I mean, they've all got, obviously, a few clients.
- 12:53But yeah, they do offer one-on-one coaching at WordPress, so.
- 12:58Before that, I was actually following their program.
- 13:01And anyway, I bought some of Ben's courses for pull-ups and things like that.
- 13:07And then that's why I approached them for one-on-one because I liked the stuff that they did in their programming.
- 13:13Yeah, I'll have to reach out to Ben and have him back on and talk about that.
- 13:17Yeah.
- 13:18It's something I didn't know they were doing.
- 13:20And I always butcher his last name, so I'm not going to try that at all today.
- 13:23Oh, yeah.
- 13:24Yeah, I know.
- 13:26I actually can't even pronounce that either.
- 13:32So you did that before you made the games in 22?
- 13:3421, I made the games.
- 13:3521.
- 13:36Right.
- 13:3621. 21.
- 13:41You were with WOD prep then when you made the games?
- 13:44Yes.
- 13:45Yes.
- 13:46How much did you learn?
- 13:47I was with another coach actually before, but still from WOD prep.
- 13:50Then I switched coaches not long after that, just to get more stuff specific for me, but I've been with Orlando for coming up two years now.
- 14:00Yeah.
- 14:02And,
- 14:05He was with you at Legends.
- 14:06I saw some pictures.
- 14:07Yeah, he was.
- 14:09And he was there.
- 14:10What was it like?
- 14:12Is he based here in the States?
- 14:14He's in Washington, Seattle, so the West Coast.
- 14:19Yeah, so it's remote.
- 14:20And sometimes the time difference is a wee bit, because I think he's eight hours behind here.
- 14:27uh but it works you know and we have zoom calls now and again but it was really nice to actually meet him in person him and his wife his wife came as well so it was it was lovely to to meet him in person yep what was it like to have your coach right there with you because you probably haven't had that before
- 14:44No, it was great, actually.
- 14:46It was good.
- 14:47He was actually looking after a few Wodpret people there, so he was constantly back and forward.
- 14:54But it was really nice to know that he came into the warm-up area and just kind of kept me calm and just gave me a wee bit of advice.
- 15:03And then I knew that he was watching the side when my friend had come out with me as well.
- 15:07So it was really nice to know that he was there and I could see him afterwards as well.
- 15:12So, yeah, that was good.
- 15:15With an experience like that, do you get more data points to take back and correct or to adjust and tweak than you would...
- 15:39if he wasn't, yeah, it was good.
- 15:42Do you mean like he could see things that I needed to work on and I know I've got to work on, but yeah, it was good that we could see, you know, the things that I struggled with and the things that I was actually really good at.
- 15:58So yeah, it was a good experience and I think it was really worthwhile to give us something moving forward to work on.
- 16:07Yeah, that's great.
- 16:10So is this your biggest win you've ever had?
- 16:15Yeah, yeah.
- 16:17To be honest, I had done a competition.
- 16:21After seeing there's not many competitions, what happened was, you know Kelly Friel, the Masters athlete, she's won in quite a few age groups, I think.
- 16:31She's won the Games the last three years, Kelly Friel.
- 16:34She's from the UK.
- 16:36I think she's in the 40s.
- 16:41Well she owns CrossFit Southampton in England down south and they took over the British Masters competition.
- 16:54So I did the qualifiers for that
- 16:57in my new age group a 60 plus but it ended up there just wasn't anybody else in the 60 plus but they allowed i asked them if i could participate in the 55 to 59 because i literally was only just turning 60 when the competition ran so i competed against the 55 to 59 year olds
- 17:15And I won that.
- 17:17So that was my first, but it was a lot smaller.
- 17:19It was a smaller competition.
- 17:21So I would see the end, but it was great to win.
- 17:25Yeah, it was great to win that, but the legends,
- 17:29was bigger a bigger competition um and obviously participating against like all my other other people in my age group so that was my biggest win i was so surprised i wasn't expecting to win to be honest i had been on a family holiday um for a couple of weeks in america and i was only back a week just getting over my jet lag just back a week and then i was a way out to phoenix um so there was a lot a lot of traveling and i have to say
- 17:57it was really tiring.
- 17:59I was very very tired when I got there and it told on the first day I really struggled.
- 18:05But the second and third of my adrenaline just kept me going and there was workouts that suited me and by the last day I was very tired.
- 18:12I just think all the travelling took a lot more out of me than I expected but it was well worth it.
- 18:18We had such a good time.
- 18:20It was great fun and it was nice to actually
- 18:23have nice weather nice warm weather because it's really cold here just now so yeah definitely this one yeah yeah we um so i'm in i'm in northern america so i got so i'm probably right at the same uh weather lot latitude that you are
- 18:42yeah yeah it can be really cold or really wet really windy we get a whole mixture but um it was it was lovely to actually go outside after your workout in phoenix and it was just lovely weather it was just so and i didn't have to warm up as long it takes me forever to warm up here
- 18:59I think just being older, it just takes me forever.
- 19:02So that was lovely.
- 19:03It was just a really good experience.
- 19:05So friendly.
- 19:06I was really nervous, but it was great having my coach there and also my friend.
- 19:15I don't think I would have gone if I'd had to go myself again.
- 19:18I think the fact that my friend said she would come with me, it was just brilliant.
- 19:22We had such good fun.
- 19:24So yeah, it was good.
- 19:27Well, back to Kelly Friel.
- 19:29I actually met her at the 21 games.
- 19:32Ah, right.
- 19:32Okay.
- 19:33So we actually stayed in the same hotel.
- 19:36All right.
- 19:37The hotel had grills out back in the courtyard.
- 19:40Oh, nice.
- 19:41And her and I were sharing a grill.
- 19:43I didn't even know she was an athlete at the time.
- 19:46Like we were just, we were talking and...
- 19:49all this stuff and grilling steaks and chicken and all that and um and then the next day i go to the venue and she's out on the floor and i'm like oh my goodness yeah from that point forward i followed her career she's been on the show four or five times i think she was lovely she was so nice and they they took over they took over the running of the british masters just
- 20:15We're in 24 now, just in 23 there.
- 20:18And I think that's what they're hoping to grow it again for the masters, you know, because there's just not a lot for all the age groups.
- 20:27So it was good.
- 20:28Again, it's smaller because I think they only have eight in each age group.
- 20:34But it was very well run and that was a good competition.
- 20:37She was really helpful.
- 20:38She was really nice.
- 20:39So it was good to meet her and I follow her now.
- 20:44And she's probably the face of women's masters outside of the United States.
- 20:51Yeah.
- 20:52She's won so much.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:55It's good.
- 20:55It's good.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:56Hopefully it'll grow.
- 20:57It'll help grow the sport in the UK.
- 21:01Yeah.
- 21:01Hopefully we want this sport to grow for all the masters athletes for sure.
- 21:06Yay.
- 21:07So you come in, you said you came in jet lagged.
- 21:12The first day was definitely not your best day.
- 21:15Oh my goodness.
- 21:17So is swimming, is it the swimming is not a good thing for you or just your time?
- 21:22No, it's not.
- 21:23it's not a good thing for me anyway but i had been practicing but i think just and and you know i mean in there because we had literally we've traveled for 24 hours and then we had we did have the wednesday but i hadn't slept i didn't sleep that night but i knew the swimming one would be difficult for me but i didn't expect to be quite as as tiring and when i first did the was the shoulder to overhead with the
- 21:48The dumbbell, I thought, this actually feels really good.
- 21:50This feels good.
- 21:51Went and did my swim and I came out and had nothing in my legs.
- 21:54It was just, oh, it was such a struggle.
- 21:57So hard.
- 21:58A lot harder than it should have been, I think.
- 22:00I mean, I would have at the best finished middle of the pack, but that was very, very far down.
- 22:06And I was not expecting to do as well in the lifting event because that's not my strength.
- 22:12I'm quite a small athlete.
- 22:15One foot lifting isn't my...
- 22:18my thing really, but how I managed to get fourth, I was totally shocked at that.
- 22:23So that kind of pulled me up a wee bit.
- 22:24Second and third day were kind of my kind of workouts.
- 22:29So I did really well, a lot of catching up the second and third day, which was good.
- 22:35And it was just about holding on on the last day because I was absolutely shattered.
- 22:40So with the swim, I love the way they programmed that event.
- 22:43My background is swimming.
- 22:45To do well in that event, you had to try to go unbroken on the shoulder to overhead.
- 22:53And that forced your heart rate up.
- 22:55And then you had to get back in the pool and kind of relax with your stroke to get like back in a rhythm.
- 23:02And so it wasn't just a simple get from point A to point B on the swim.
- 23:08Adding that dumbbell really changed the dynamic of the workout.
- 23:11Definitely.
- 23:12And I think if you're not a swimmer,
- 23:14it's such swimming is a whole different thing as far as fitness is concerned the breathing and uh oh god so if you were a good swimmer i think you could relax in the swim if you're not a good swimmer you just i just couldn't relax um i tried my best but uh yeah it wasn't it wasn't my best it wasn't my baby if you're not relaxing on a swim you're not going to be efficient
- 23:40I promise my friend, we were going swimming every Thursday evening when we were going, we were adding in just more lengths.
- 23:50And we've said, I'm going to carry that on.
- 23:52I have to do it because it's going to come up in competitions.
- 23:56So I just have to get a bit better at that.
- 23:59So that's something I've definitely got to work on, but I just hated that.
- 24:03I mean, I just felt so bad after that.
- 24:06Anyway, we always have one bad event.
- 24:09pools that allow you to bring in dumbbells or kettlebells yeah this is an issue I had even when we were training for the games when we got swimming programmed and they would say do other exercises we just cannot do that our pools we just can't do it so we don't have the ability to do that here but that's
- 24:32That's just one of the things you have to accept.
- 24:34I just have to try and get better at swimming in the hope that I can hang on a bit better next time.
- 24:40But it was a good event.
- 24:41I mean, that was, it was a well-programmed event.
- 24:43It was good.
- 24:44And it was great to see the people that were good swimmers.
- 24:46I just, you know, when you just watch them, it was just fantastic.
- 24:49I mean, my son, my oldest son was a really good swimmer.
- 24:52But I've just never, ever really, I can swim, but I've never tried to develop my swimming.
- 24:59So it's something that I have to, I have to do.
- 25:03Yeah, then you go into the lift and you're a smaller athlete.
- 25:07My co-host on Thursday night, she won the 40 to 44-year-old division.
- 25:10Oh, Jeannie.
- 25:13Jeannie, yeah.
- 25:13She was amazing.
- 25:14I managed to see her in the last event.
- 25:17Yeah.
- 25:19And when she was in 35 to 39, she would finish at the bottom of a lot of lifting events.
- 25:26She gets to 40 to 44 and now she's middle of the pack.
- 25:30And it just, it was a complete change of mindset at that point.
- 25:34Yeah, definitely.
- 25:36Yeah.
- 25:37I know I wasn't because I took fourth of thinking that.
- 25:41Honestly, I didn't even know I'd taken fourth because I was like, oh my God.
- 25:44And you know as well, what's really difficult is I work in kilograms.
- 25:48So my coach had to try and tell me what colours.
- 25:53Now that, if you put that colour, that colour, that so many and I had a wee bit of paper with me because I would have no idea.
- 25:59You've got four minutes and trying to convert the pounds into kilograms.
- 26:04So I had my wee bit of paper so I knew roughly what I was putting on the bar.
- 26:09And then I just kept trying and I had no idea where I'd finished.
- 26:13I knew I hadn't done, I'd managed to do okay in the snatch.
- 26:17I kind of thought I've done what I thought I could do in the snatch.
- 26:20In the clean and jerk, I was a wee bit disappointed.
- 26:23I couldn't tell you what I got actually, but I failed my jerk on the last lift.
- 26:27So I had no idea.
- 26:30I was feeling so tired that day.
- 26:31We got home to the hotel and it was my coach had said, you got fourth in the lift.
- 26:35I hadn't even looked.
- 26:36I couldn't believe that I got fourth.
- 26:37So that kind of boosted me a wee bit because I think it took me up to 10th before going into the second day.
- 26:44So, yeah, so that was a nice bonus.
- 26:48But I always expect to fall really down in the rankings when the lift, you know, the max lift comes in.
- 26:56Well, and then you and Jamie have another thing in common because you both swept Friday.
- 27:02Wasn't it?
- 27:03Yeah.
- 27:04Yep.
- 27:06I can't remember what the events were.
- 27:09So the first one was Hell's Bells.
- 27:10That was the, where you hold the grip test with dumbbells and the lunges and the devil's press penalty.
- 27:18Were you able to go through unbroken?
- 27:21Yeah, I just held on to it.
- 27:23It wasn't a heavy, it wasn't too heavy a dumbbell.
- 27:25It was like, in my money, it's 10 kilograms.
- 27:31I can't remember what it was there.
- 27:33And I thought that's not too heavy, but it was just your grip, just being able to hold on.
- 27:37The thing that I thought would maybe catch me out was the squat cleans, but they actually, once I got through them, I thought I knew I could do the devil's press unbroken.
- 27:45So yeah, I was pleased with that.
- 27:48Mm-hmm.
- 27:48So that starts your run, and then you go into jump, which is the rope climb, the three varieties of rope.
- 27:58I like that one.
- 27:59Yeah, and I just managed to do unbroken on that as well.
- 28:03I just made sure I didn't feel any rope climbs, and I did unbroken on all the ropes, which was great.
- 28:10So I really enjoyed that one.
- 28:12So I had a good day on the Friday.
- 28:15That rope was Jamie.
- 28:18Jamie tries to come on to these, but this happened right in the middle of her training day.
- 28:23She was training hard.
- 28:27um but she um like she loves rope climbs so much and she loves jump rope but she the heavy rope got her oh but they had doubles we just had singles that would have been hard to do doubles with that heavy rope to be honest in a way I wish we'd had doubles sometimes I kind of wish we had some of the things that the others had um the singles were actually fine with that heavy rope but it would have been difficult with the doubles I think
- 28:56Yeah.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:57She did it on broken and warmup a ton of times.
- 28:59And the minute she got on the floor, I think her head just, she went ahead and did the crossovers and like just held the rope wrong or something.
- 29:07But that, that brings me to something where I was talking to Tony Tursky who won men's, I think your division.
- 29:1765, 60, maybe 60, 64.
- 29:18I've seen him on Instagram.
- 29:19And
- 29:24And he is of the belief that the programmer should let
- 29:31let the athlete show off like if an athlete is in 60 to 64 and they can do a bar muscle up there should be a spot in the workout that they get to show that off and do the bar muscle i think so because i think also it's a separator sometimes i think you need that um and because you do train all these these things you train your ring muscle ups your
- 29:54bar muscle ups and I mean I'm not great at bar muscle ups but I know I can get up and over so I always quite like it when something like that comes in because you think well you can either do it or you can't kind of thing and I think sometimes in big competitions you have to have a bit of a separator sometimes with a movement but they did allow us to do that in the final round of
- 30:17I can't remember the name.
- 30:18I don't remember the name of all the workouts.
- 30:20I understand, man.
- 30:23It was the first workout of the next day.
- 30:25Yes, that's right.
- 30:27And you had the clean and jerks and the snatches with the bar muscle-ups.
- 30:32We had chest to bar, chest to bar, then bar muscle-ups.
- 30:34That's right.
- 30:36I kind of struggled with that with my grips.
- 30:38I kept slipping my, the grips I use, because in our gym we don't really use chalk on the bars, so I have chalkless grips.
- 30:45But as soon as you get a bit of chalk on them, they just slip.
- 30:50And eventually I just threw them off when I was doing my last bar muscle up and it felt so much better.
- 30:54But you live and learn with things like that.
- 30:57But yes, it was good they put the bar muscle ups in at the end there, because it meant the people that could do it could get that wee bit further, so.
- 31:05And that was the last minute change, and it was really good that they did that.
- 31:08Yeah, definitely.
- 31:10Tony had an example of a guy who finished 19th, but one thing he had was bar muscle-ups, and in that event, he got to show off.
- 31:18Yeah, which is nice.
- 31:20And it probably gave him the encouragement to keep pushing forward to get better and better at everything else.
- 31:27Yeah, I would say that, yeah, definitely.
- 31:32So you won that one as well.
- 31:34Because I've got one, I think I've got one extra bar muscle up to the person that's second.
- 31:39Yep.
- 31:39And then you finish Saturday with another one bites the dust.
- 31:44And this is where my memory is a little bit fuzzy.
- 31:47Is this the heavy cleans and the handstand walks?
- 31:50Yes.
- 31:50Yes.
- 31:51Now, there's a story with that as well.
- 31:54The girl that won it would have won it anyway.
- 32:00But I, while I was...
- 32:03doing my cleans I thought gosh they feel really heavy it's not a it's not a strength of mine squat cleans a power clean I would always choose to power I just for some reason I hate doing a squat on anything and I thought gosh this feels quite heavy and I think I was into I don't know I think I'd done maybe on my third round they swapped my bar out because I had the wrong weight on it they had the wrong weight so I think I had too heavy a weight I have no idea what
- 32:28what it was, whether it was a men's bar, but it was too heavy.
- 32:31So as soon as they swapped it in, oh, it felt so much, it felt so much better.
- 32:36I think that happened to one other girl in heat as well.
- 32:39But I mean, I never put, because the girl that won it, she deserved to win it, but I was second in that one.
- 32:44I still would have been second, I just would have been a bit closer to her.
- 32:49But yeah, that one was funny because they programmed the handstand walks before the cleans.
- 32:54So some people never did a clean.
- 32:57A lot of people in my heat never actually managed to get to the cleans because they couldn't do the handstand walks.
- 33:04But I think there was going to be four in our heat that managed to finish that.
- 33:08I was really pleased with that one as well.
- 33:11My handstand walks actually showed up that day.
- 33:14So that goes to the flip side of programming.
- 33:17Yeah, you want people to be able to show off what they can do, but you don't want to make the barrier so hard that nobody...
- 33:25I was surprised.
- 33:27I thought they would have made them clean and then handstand, but they never.
- 33:32And I think that, to be honest, that probably for the last day, it probably meant that their legs were nowhere near as fatigued for that last one, which was a lot of squatting as well.
- 33:46So the ones that maybe didn't do so well in that one did quite well on the last day.
- 33:51It was interesting to actually see that.
- 33:54because they didn't have to do any of the squat cleans because they couldn't do the handstand walks.
- 33:59But yeah, so I did get a second in that one.
- 34:01I was really pleased with that as well.
- 34:04So the middle two days, three firsts and a second.
- 34:09Yeah, I was delighted with that.
- 34:13So what did the leaderboard look like for you going into that final double event?
- 34:19I had 40 points clear.
- 34:24So it was a big cushion, but I was still so nervous.
- 34:26I just didn't expect to be in that position.
- 34:28I've never been in that position that people are chasing me like that.
- 34:32And I knew that I was really tired as well.
- 34:35And I thought, of course, this is going to be so hard, this back-to-back, the back-to-back workouts.
- 34:40And you had actually no idea where you were because everybody was on the floor.
- 34:45So you had no idea where you had come in the first event before you started the second event.
- 34:52And I knew I'd done really badly on the, I had hardly anything in the tank by the time I was doing the thrusters and the burpee one.
- 34:59So I knew I hadn't done so well on that one.
- 35:02So it was just, I had to, I was refusing to look at leaderboard for a wee while.
- 35:06And then eventually somebody came up and said, you've won.
- 35:09So I was 20 points clear, I think.
- 35:12Yeah.
- 35:13You won 671 to 651.
- 35:14But about that last workout,
- 35:21They had an unusual lane formation where if you were in the lead, you actually were facing the entire crowd or the entire field of athletes.
- 35:34I could see everybody.
- 35:34I was right at the very back, so I could see.
- 35:38But if you were in second, your back was to everybody.
- 35:42that's right yes I know it was strange wasn't it because I was aware that Litza was a way up at the front and I was at the back so I could see her and I could all see the girl that was that was trying to keep in third place she was right in front of me as well so um I did have a bit of an advantage there but to be honest you kind of totally lost track where you were in that um workout anyway with the with the snatches and the
- 36:06the squats yeah i honestly i said that i felt really bad after the swim event after that last event i was totally wiped out i've never felt so drained in my life and it was it took so much out of me i think again it was just a combination of fatigue nervousness um yeah it took me a long time to recover from that one but once i found out i had one i started to recover quite quickly
- 36:33Again, you're the seventh champion I've talked to.
- 36:36And then eighth is Jamie.
- 36:38So with that formation, the others told me they knew who they had to beat.
- 36:44So like they would watch that person.
- 36:48And if that person would put the dumbbells down, they'd put the dumbbells down.
- 36:52Yes.
- 36:55They were picking up the barbell.
- 36:56And it was that way through.
- 36:59And it did give them a distinct advantage.
- 37:03Some even admitted it was probably too much of an advantage.
- 37:06Yeah.
- 37:08It probably was.
- 37:09But yeah, I think I was just so nervous and feeling so tired.
- 37:12I think I just totally lost track.
- 37:14I just knew that some people were in front of me, but I think I maybe got sixth or seventh.
- 37:18I can't remember on that first, the first part.
- 37:22But the second part, I was, I mean, I thought I'd be able to do these thrusters unbroken, but my legs were just like bled.
- 37:30Yeah, I had to just really hang on to the end.
- 37:34You guys did a lot of squatting.
- 37:35A lot.
- 37:37And I don't like squatting.
- 37:39um but we did a lot a lot of squatting and you know as well there was no machines which actually surprisingly i wasn't sad about that because being a small person i'm it's not my strongest thing but um yeah there was no machines either um yeah but do you think without the machines they still kept it kept in a variety that every workout felt different
- 38:02Yeah, I think so.
- 38:03Yeah.
- 38:04I mean, we had, yeah, when you think we had rope climbs, we had bar muscle ups, we had, we had all the different ropes, we had swimming, you know, dumbbell, a lot of dumbbells.
- 38:17I think it was, it just felt like CrossFit, you know, like CrossFit to me.
- 38:23I liked it.
- 38:23It was very leg dominant, I think.
- 38:27But yeah, on the whole, I thought it was a good competition.
- 38:31And my body wasn't wrecked at the end of it or anything like that.
- 38:35I thought I'd be a lot surer than I was, but thankfully I wasn't too bad.
- 38:40Yeah, as a spectator, I don't think that anything felt repetitive.
- 38:46No.
- 38:48The workouts were all very different.
- 38:54So you get announced as winner, you get to go up on the podium.
- 39:00What was that feeling like?
- 39:02Yeah, it just felt great.
- 39:04It was surreal.
- 39:05I just couldn't believe that I had won, to be honest.
- 39:07But it was just so nice with the girls that got second and third were so nice as well.
- 39:11It was just like such a good group.
- 39:13And they were so complimentary as well.
- 39:20You know, in a fun way, saying, oh, we'll be following you, we'll be, you know...
- 39:25you make sure we can catch up with you and stuff like that.
- 39:27It just felt really good.
- 39:28I just, I was so pleased.
- 39:30I travelled so far.
- 39:31I didn't expect to do that well because my coach has said, what are your expectations?
- 39:36I said, well, top eight.
- 39:38I would like top eight.
- 39:39That would be great.
- 39:40Just knowing the build up being on holiday and whatever, I would never have expected to have gotten first.
- 39:45So when I got first, it was just so good.
- 39:47It's such a good feeling.
- 39:49I was happy.
- 39:51What kind of confidence does that give you now going into the 2024 season?
- 39:57It's given me a bit more confidence because I tend to not be the most confident.
- 40:07When it comes to my abilities, it's what, you know, I always think, oh gosh, everybody's better than me.
- 40:13I'm not a gymnast.
- 40:14I'm not a specialist in anything, but I can usually muddle my way through.
- 40:18But I think it just gave me confidence that I can compete when I have to compete.
- 40:23Because I train on my own all the time, like I'm always training on my own.
- 40:29So sometimes it's really difficult to know where you're at until you're actually in a competition.
- 40:34And because I don't compete very often,
- 40:37you really don't know where you're at compared to your other people in your age group.
- 40:41So it was really nice to know that I could actually do that.
- 40:44I could compete.
- 40:45And yeah, I know that there's holes here and there, but I know that I can work on them.
- 40:51I'm always up for a challenge.
- 40:52So it's given me more confidence for sure that I can compete with the best.
- 41:03Where does that set your sights for the CrossFit Games in 2024?
- 41:10Well realistically I don't know because I do know you've got to be realistic you know there's people coming up from the 55 to 59 and they're you know they've been doing cross they've been the games regularly year after year so you know that they're
- 41:25like Laurie, I can never pronounce Laurie's second name, but she's won numerous times.
- 41:31Betsy wasn't at Legends, but she was second at the Games last year.
- 41:36All these people.
- 41:37I would like to think I could maybe get top eight.
- 41:40I'm saying top eight.
- 41:41I would like to aim for that.
- 41:43I think that would be realistic for me with my ability, you know, my gymnastics and things like that.
- 41:52I would like to think I can maybe get top eight in games that I qualify.
- 41:56I think that's been realistic with all the other people I know that are going to be at the games that were at the Legends.
- 42:03We'll see.
- 42:04We'll see.
- 42:05I'm going to work hard anyway.
- 42:07So just to be clear, you're saying top 10?
- 42:11Yeah, top 10.
- 42:13Okay, yeah, top 10.
- 42:14I would like to be top 10.
- 42:16I think that should be achievable for me.
- 42:18Okay.
- 42:19I just wanted to be clear because we never know what the heat sizes are going to be at these events.
- 42:24Right.
- 42:25And right.
- 42:28And so, um,
- 42:31top half because you're 20 go in your age group seemed to like what you were saying so if you split that into two heats yeah yeah and the first heat i'd like to be the first heat so the second heat is it the second heat they always go yeah um yeah so i would like to think if my training goes to plan um and i can fill these little gaps um then and work them just work on everything make my strength stronger
- 42:59um yeah i'd like to think that i could get there and i could make the top ten we'll see
- 43:06So what does this community mean to you?
- 43:09You travel all the way from Scotland to Tempe, Arizona, and you hang out with these like-minded individuals in your division.
- 43:20How good are friends and how quickly do you become friends with that group?
- 43:26So quickly because you don't know.
- 43:28I didn't know.
- 43:29I don't think I've met any of them before.
- 43:32Yeah.
- 43:34Well, maybe one Karen Smith, I think she was at the games when I was there.
- 43:38So I didn't know any of them.
- 43:39There's a lot of new names that I didn't know.
- 43:42And we just so quickly just all got on really well.
- 43:48It was great.
- 43:48Some of them are just such good fun, like funny people, you know, and just like people who can't say, oh, are you Lynn?
- 43:55And it was just great because it is kind of nerve wracking going, you're coming from like
- 44:03Scotland to America not competing very often and then you're in amongst all these people you don't know but it's just so quickly you just all become so friendly and I'm hoping that I'll see some of them in the games you know I'm sure I will see some of the games you know if I get there
- 44:22and injury free.
- 44:24And it'd be nice to see them again.
- 44:26So you can you kind of the thing we used to follow them and start following them on Instagram or whatever.
- 44:30So it's, I think it's great.
- 44:31They're so friendly, down to earth people.
- 44:37Yeah.
- 44:37And does it make you become more active on Instagram now that you've met these people?
- 44:43I'm terrible.
- 44:44I'm not very active.
- 44:45You know, it's so funny.
- 44:47My friends, my friend Lynn, she's called Lynn as well.
- 44:50I've known Lynn for years.
- 44:51And she came along and she did all the posts.
- 44:54Every night we got to bed, she would have a wee glass of wine because I was being very good.
- 44:58I was having my ginger beer.
- 45:00And she would make a post so that people at my gym saw the friends and she would put that on Facebook and Instagram.
- 45:08So it was her that was doing all the posts because she knows I'm terrible.
- 45:11I'm actually terrible at that.
- 45:12Now and again, I'll post things.
- 45:14I'm just not very active.
- 45:18But my flame does it for me.
- 45:20But yeah, it's made me sort of follow more people and see how their training is going and what have you.
- 45:30But I'm not the best at the social media.
- 45:34If anybody knows, it's a guy trying to find one action shot of Lynn on a competition floor and used for a thumbnail.
- 45:43And she's got nothing.
- 45:46Oh, no, it's terrible.
- 45:47That's what my friend says.
- 45:48She says, they'll follow you and you'll go, oh, there's nothing there.
- 45:51So she always tags me.
- 45:53She'll tag me on Facebook or whatever.
- 45:54So I think it appears on mine.
- 45:57I know I really should do more.
- 45:58I do apologize if you're looking for something because when I get asked to send a picture,
- 46:04I said I don't have any action photos, but I know I really should.
- 46:08I should learn.
- 46:11Yeah, I usually have my camera with me, and the goal is to beef up my folder full of pictures so that when I interview people, I have some of my own.
- 46:21But this was such a big competition to get around, and I didn't know everybody at this point to know who was going to be successful and who wasn't.
- 46:33But it was delightful getting to watch you and watch you win.
- 46:39I would be remiss to not bring this up since it's hitting the news pretty heavily here in the States.
- 46:45And that is the email that went out to the podium winners from organizers about not having prize money this year at legends.
- 46:59I want to open the floor.
- 47:00If you have a comment about that, if you don't, I totally understand because I have a lot about this and I'm going to say it tonight on my own.
- 47:09Yeah.
- 47:09Well, I, I had no expectations of prize money.
- 47:12Like you see, I like, I don't compete very often.
- 47:15I don't think that my, I only thought the games paid out.
- 47:18I was actually, and I'm just going to sort of rewind a wee bit, but when I did the masters, the British masters at Southampton, we all got, which totally surprised me.
- 47:30We all got 200 pounds.
- 47:32I don't know what that is in dollars, but we all got given,
- 47:37a cheque, not a cheque, but we got that put into our bank.
- 47:41Absolutely surprised me because I wasn't expecting that.
- 47:44And I didn't.
- 47:45And I actually emailed Joe back saying I had no expectations of getting prize money.
- 47:51I didn't expect to get it because they have never said that there was prize money.
- 47:56So I didn't really expect it.
- 47:57But see, I don't compete very often, so I don't know what the expectations are of the other people that maybe do compete more.
- 48:06I was happy with my medal and my shorts and my tops that I got.
- 48:10Money, would it be nice?
- 48:11Yeah, that would have been nice, but I wasn't expecting it.
- 48:14So I don't know where others, where other people that compete a lot, were they expecting money?
- 48:22So the majority of the people that I've talked to have competed at this event before.
- 48:26Okay, right, okay.
- 48:28So in the past, there was prize money.
- 48:31So that expectation was set.
- 48:33And without anything contradicting that, before a month after the event.
- 48:40But I'll have a lot more to say about that tonight on my own show.
- 48:46I wanted to give you the opportunity to say anything if you wanted.
- 48:49And thank you for sharing your thoughts.
- 48:51Yeah, no, no problem.
- 48:53Um, yeah, I know there'll be different views on that, but I've seen, I didn't expect to get money in the first place.
- 48:58So I wasn't disappointed.
- 49:00I didn't appreciate that they had money in previous years.
- 49:03So, um, yeah.
- 49:06However, I was happy I got my medal and my swag.
- 49:10And you got a ton of confidence going into next season.
- 49:12Definitely, yeah.
