- 0:34what is going on everybody
- 0:35welcome to the Clydesdale
- 0:37media's podcast featuring
- 0:39the athletes of the 2024
- 0:41CrossFit Games semifinals
- 0:43and we are here with
- 0:45CrossFit Games athlete
- 0:47Caroline Stanley how's it
- 0:49going Caroline good how are
- 0:51you I'm good what's it
- 0:54sound how does it sound
- 0:55when someone calls you
- 0:56CrossFit Games athlete
- 0:59It's still kind of like different because,
- 1:02I mean, I guess I've always,
- 1:04ever since I started CrossFit,
- 1:06I've always wanted to go to the Games.
- 1:08So now actually making it
- 1:09and then people saying
- 1:11CrossFit Games athlete,
- 1:12it just kind of like doesn't seem real.
- 1:17Well, it's real.
- 1:18You went last year.
- 1:20You even made it past the
- 1:21first round of cuts in your
- 1:22rookie season.
- 1:25What was the goal last year?
- 1:26Was it to get...
- 1:28further than that or
- 1:30realistically did you think
- 1:31that's where you would be
- 1:35um I guess the I guess
- 1:38going in I didn't really
- 1:39have any expectations
- 1:40considering it was my first
- 1:42crossfit games um I wanted
- 1:45to make it past the first
- 1:46cut of course I mean
- 1:47everyone does but I guess um
- 1:53going in I didn't really
- 1:53have any expectations so I
- 1:55was just going out there
- 1:56doing what I knew how to do
- 1:58and whatever happened
- 1:59happened what so I just I
- 2:04listened to your interview
- 2:06you did with kat two years
- 2:07ago when you were getting
- 2:09ready for granite games and
- 2:11we're going to dive back to
- 2:12that a little bit because
- 2:13you had just graduated from
- 2:14college you would you were
- 2:16going to your second
- 2:17semi-final at that point
- 2:20You said on that interview
- 2:22that you were not an endurance athlete.
- 2:27And then I look at your games finishes,
- 2:30and your three best games
- 2:31finishes were the bike, the 5K,
- 2:35and Helena.
- 2:36I know.
- 2:39Honestly, I guess, I mean,
- 2:42I've been really...
- 2:44honing in and trying to work
- 2:47on endurance and this I
- 2:48know there and I guess when
- 2:50I talked with her that year
- 2:52I didn't um I think that
- 2:55was my senior year I think
- 2:56I guess I just graduated
- 2:57right before going to
- 2:58Granite Games and I never
- 3:01really had a coach never I
- 3:03just kind of followed
- 3:04programs did what I wanted
- 3:06to do or like didn't want
- 3:08to do I not really didn't
- 3:09want to do but like
- 3:10Kind of just in and out,
- 3:11like not a specific,
- 3:13like someone structuring me, I guess.
- 3:16So after the Granite Games is that year,
- 3:19that second year is
- 3:22whenever I got in contact with Jarrett,
- 3:24who's my coach now.
- 3:26And so we,
- 3:27we started working together like
- 3:30a month or two or so after
- 3:32that season or whatever.
- 3:36So are you a different athlete?
- 3:39Were you a different athlete
- 3:40at the games last year than
- 3:42you were two years ago
- 3:44going into Granite Games?
- 3:46Oh, 100%.
- 3:49Yeah.
- 3:50I found it fascinating.
- 3:52I wasn't doing it to call you out.
- 3:54I found it fascinating that
- 3:55you had improved that much
- 3:57in something you thought
- 3:59was your whole in a year.
- 4:04Right.
- 4:04I mean,
- 4:05it really makes a difference having
- 4:07someone to really structure
- 4:09you the way you're supposed
- 4:10to be and following a plan
- 4:14and talking with them about strengths,
- 4:16weaknesses, what we want to do,
- 4:17what we don't want to do and whatever,
- 4:19instead of just kind of
- 4:21going with the flow and everything.
- 4:24I think one-on-one
- 4:24individualized programming
- 4:27is definitely beneficial.
- 4:30Before we get into Jarrett,
- 4:31because we're going to do that,
- 4:33when you were at the games,
- 4:34what was your favorite
- 4:35event to compete in?
- 4:36I would say the Helena was
- 4:45probably my favorite event.
- 4:50So I was going through your Instagram,
- 4:53and your Helena picture is the coolest.
- 4:59Yeah.
- 5:00Like everybody wishes they
- 5:02had a picture that cool.
- 5:06Yeah, that was,
- 5:07that was a really fun event.
- 5:10Do you like,
- 5:11do you ever frame any of these
- 5:13pictures or are you in such
- 5:15a digital age now that you
- 5:17just leave them on your
- 5:18phone or your laptop?
- 5:22Oh, I don't have any.
- 5:23I mean, I don't have any frame personally,
- 5:25but like my mom,
- 5:26she'll print them out and
- 5:28put them all over and like
- 5:30the fridge and this, that and the other.
- 5:34Would you ever like frame
- 5:35your jersey with like a picture?
- 5:37Oh yeah, I would definitely do that.
- 5:41Okay.
- 5:44I just thought that was a
- 5:45really cool picture.
- 5:46And while we're here on Instagram,
- 5:47I have a big question to ask you.
- 5:50And one,
- 5:51I know the guy who took this picture,
- 5:52by the way,
- 5:53and he is one of the coolest
- 5:54cats in the CrossFit space.
- 5:57B-A-W Media is just, he's one of the best.
- 6:02So I like featuring his stuff anyway.
- 6:05Oh, yeah.
- 6:06He's a good person too.
- 6:08He is so much.
- 6:09I want to know what this is.
- 6:18You're front squatting
- 6:20someone doing a handstand.
- 6:33Was that something, um,
- 6:35Jarrett programmed?
- 6:38No, he didn't program that.
- 6:40The, um,
- 6:42It was actually the girl
- 6:43doing the handstands idea.
- 6:44She was like,
- 6:46let me see if you can do this to me.
- 6:48And I was like, okay, I'll give it a shot.
- 6:52Well, you gave it, you did it for reps.
- 6:57Did you ever doubt yourself?
- 7:01No.
- 7:02I mean, it is like, I guess it's,
- 7:05it's awkward, but I mean,
- 7:07my front squat max and
- 7:10is way more than what she
- 7:12weighs it's just I guess
- 7:13I'd more of a balanced
- 7:14thing yeah and then does
- 7:17her do her shoes stick to
- 7:19the wall or not no she just
- 7:22has regular shoes on no
- 7:25sticky nothing so I just
- 7:29thought that was funny when
- 7:30I was looking um the the
- 7:32weird stuff that
- 7:33crossfitters do in a gym
- 7:34when they're left alone
- 7:37Yeah.
- 7:38Jared,
- 7:38Jared definitely wouldn't have heard
- 7:40that for me.
- 7:40Did he, did he,
- 7:42what did he say when he saw it?
- 7:45I'm not sure.
- 7:46I think he would just say
- 7:47I'm crazy because I do
- 7:49crazy stuff all the time
- 7:50and he just don't, you don't get.
- 7:53Yeah.
- 7:57Don't get hurt, but have fun.
- 7:59Right.
- 7:59Right.
- 8:00Right.
- 8:02So, um, so let's talk about Jarrett.
- 8:05You, why,
- 8:07why did you pick him as your coach?
- 8:10Um,
- 8:13Honestly, he kind of reached out to me.
- 8:16Well, so at Granite Games, he was there.
- 8:21But a guy who I was there
- 8:24because the owner of College Hill,
- 8:27she knew a guy that was there.
- 8:29His name was Dan that went to Comp Train.
- 8:34And he actually is the one
- 8:36that told Jared about me.
- 8:39And then Jared reached out to me.
- 8:42And we got on a call and, you know,
- 8:44went through that whole little spill.
- 8:50But... And did you know
- 8:52right away that he was the worst?
- 8:56Oh, yeah.
- 8:57Oh, yeah.
- 8:58When we got on the call and
- 8:59just how invested he was in
- 9:02this sport and, like, in, like, athletes,
- 9:06even just, like, outside of the gym,
- 9:09as far as, like, just...
- 9:12what they do, their outlook,
- 9:14like invested in not just
- 9:15like what I'm doing in the gym,
- 9:17but also like how I'm feeling about,
- 9:20it could be anything like
- 9:21just a random Tuesday or like just,
- 9:24he's always,
- 9:25he cares about you as a
- 9:27person as well as an athlete.
- 9:33Every time I have him on and I'm sorry,
- 9:36I have a frog in my throat
- 9:37these last couple of days
- 9:38from talking so much.
- 9:40Um, you're fine.
- 9:42every time I talk to him,
- 9:43he is so not consumed with
- 9:46the leaderboard that if I
- 9:48ask him questions about it,
- 9:50he always tells me his
- 9:52philosophy about why I
- 9:54shouldn't care about that.
- 9:57Yeah.
- 9:58He's, he's a good, he's a good guy.
- 10:00I got a, I got the best one out there.
- 10:04Yeah, he, like,
- 10:06he's the one that taught me the phrase,
- 10:09comparison is the thief of joy.
- 10:12And that, like,
- 10:13you shouldn't compare
- 10:14yourself on the leaderboard.
- 10:15You should compare yourself to yourself.
- 10:18Is that what you're looking
- 10:19for in a coach?
- 10:22Oh, yeah.
- 10:22I mean, he, it doesn't, like...
- 10:28I obviously care about – I mean,
- 10:31I care about the leaderboard.
- 10:32I care about this, that, and the other.
- 10:33Like, I'm very competitive.
- 10:35But, like, he keeps me,
- 10:36like – even if I do not
- 10:40have a good workout, not have a good day,
- 10:42not this, that, and the other,
- 10:43he still keeps me, like,
- 10:46I guess still in a good
- 10:47mental spot and everything because –
- 10:51CrossFit is just as much
- 10:53mental as it is physical.
- 10:55I feel like once you get out
- 10:56on the floor and everything.
- 10:58So let me ask you this.
- 11:02When you started with him,
- 11:04he was a comp train.
- 11:05So you become a comp train athlete.
- 11:09He moves to Proven.
- 11:11You move to Proven.
- 11:14Other than the name on the building,
- 11:15has anything changed for
- 11:17you because you stayed with Jarrett?
- 11:21Not really.
- 11:23So it's, it's the same for you, just a,
- 11:26a different home location for your coach.
- 11:29Yeah.
- 11:29I mean, like I get the, I mean,
- 11:32I have the privilege,
- 11:33like as far as me and
- 11:34Jared's like connection and
- 11:36like the way like we communicate and this,
- 11:39that, no, they're like, nothing's changed,
- 11:41but like, I guess I just,
- 11:42I have the privilege of
- 11:43also being with a different
- 11:45community and they're, um,
- 11:49the other coaches, um,
- 11:50and the athletes that are already in that,
- 11:53like going from comp train
- 11:54to proven or whatever,
- 11:55the coaches and the
- 11:56athletes that are already
- 11:57with proven have been very like,
- 12:01like a family or whatever.
- 12:02So it's,
- 12:03it's nice to have that community
- 12:05and everything to be able
- 12:06to go up there and,
- 12:08train with them.
- 12:09And even though Jared is my coach,
- 12:13all the other coaches still
- 12:14like have eyes on me and
- 12:15are able to tell me, help me with this,
- 12:19that,
- 12:19and the other that I might need help
- 12:20with like a movement or a
- 12:22workout or anything.
- 12:24And then I guess we're all
- 12:25just one little family, which is nice.
- 12:30Well, and he, um,
- 12:33He brought Sydney and Lucy with him too.
- 12:36So you,
- 12:37the three of you were all at comp train.
- 12:39Now you're all at proven.
- 12:41So you still have those,
- 12:42but then you add people
- 12:43like Sydney Wells and Tia and,
- 12:48and are the,
- 12:48is that the privilege you have?
- 12:50Like the six time champion
- 12:52is someone you get to work
- 12:53out with occasionally.
- 12:55Oh yeah.
- 12:55A hundred percent.
- 12:57She's helped me with a lot
- 12:58of things and it's very
- 13:02useful and helpful.
- 13:06Was there any intimidation
- 13:07when you first set foot in her house?
- 13:13Not intimidation, no.
- 13:15I mean,
- 13:16they are all so welcoming and like...
- 13:19just bring you in like arms
- 13:21open wide it wasn't no
- 13:23intimidation or fear or
- 13:24like stepping on anything
- 13:26anybody's toes like they're
- 13:27all so nice and friendly
- 13:29and just like we're all
- 13:31part of the same team at
- 13:32the end of the day so it
- 13:34wasn't anything to be like
- 13:37any kind of worry or
- 13:38nothing in the back of my
- 13:39head wow because
- 13:43just a quick story.
- 13:44I was,
- 13:45I was doing media at the syndicate crown.
- 13:48I believe it was.
- 13:49I'm,
- 13:50I'm kind of leaning against the wall
- 13:52in the media pit.
- 13:53And this person's asking me questions.
- 13:55And I,
- 13:56I looked down and it was Tia and I
- 13:58got freaked out.
- 13:59Like, like, Oh my gosh,
- 14:01I'm sitting here chatting with Tia.
- 14:03So that's why I asked the question.
- 14:04Cause even I was like starstruck.
- 14:07in that moment but she
- 14:08couldn't have been nicer
- 14:09like if she wasn't trying
- 14:11to intimidate me I just was
- 14:13like starstruck more than
- 14:14anything yeah she's super
- 14:17super super nice yeah um
- 14:22and so I've always had
- 14:23great experiences with her
- 14:24but like in this sport and
- 14:27in this space she she casts a big shadow
- 14:34Yeah,
- 14:34my first time meeting her was we met
- 14:37or whatever and introduced each other.
- 14:40And then we just started
- 14:41going about training or I
- 14:43was talking to Sydney about something.
- 14:45And then she turned around
- 14:46and was talking about my accent.
- 14:49And so it was kind of like ever since that,
- 14:52just our first time
- 14:54interacting together was
- 14:56just like we were joking and having fun.
- 14:58We had known each other.
- 15:01for a while and we have
- 15:02literally just met so it's
- 15:06funny because I told you
- 15:07before we were on the air a
- 15:09lot of my wife's family is
- 15:11in Charlotte and you talk
- 15:13just like my wife's cousin
- 15:16if I close my eyes that is
- 15:19who I would be I would
- 15:20picture it's funny because
- 15:23your accent is thick yeah
- 15:26they're like you talk so country yeah
- 15:31That's fine.
- 15:32That's fine.
- 15:32And North Carolina has a
- 15:33different version of it
- 15:35than the rest of the South.
- 15:37Yeah.
- 15:38Yeah.
- 15:42So you and Jared go to Proven.
- 15:46What elements of your season
- 15:49have you done at Proven headquarters?
- 15:51And what have you done back
- 15:53in North Carolina?
- 15:56I guess the first...
- 16:00When they first opened,
- 16:02I went up there right after
- 16:04and just kind of like to
- 16:05see the facility and this, that,
- 16:06and the other.
- 16:07And then I did the first two
- 16:10open workouts at my hometown.
- 16:14And then I did the third
- 16:16open workout at Proven.
- 16:18They had the live announcements.
- 16:19And then we kind of did it
- 16:21all the next day.
- 16:22And then I did quarterfinals at Proven.
- 16:28Is it good for you to have
- 16:29that push or support or
- 16:33both by doing it there?
- 16:35Oh, yeah.
- 16:37I think so.
- 16:38It was very helpful.
- 16:42Do they team you up with
- 16:43someone that is good for
- 16:45you to give you a push?
- 16:47Or do you guys pick who you
- 16:48want to go up against during workouts?
- 16:50Or how does that all work out?
- 16:54Um,
- 16:55I guess the coaches kind of just like
- 16:57put like little heats
- 16:58together depending on like
- 16:59the workout and like the space,
- 17:02what kind of space we
- 17:03needed and how many could
- 17:04kind of go at the same time.
- 17:08But you leave that up to the coaches.
- 17:11Yeah.
- 17:15I mean, we could pick,
- 17:16I guess if we wanted to.
- 17:22internet um my wife just got
- 17:25home from work and she
- 17:26probably logged in to
- 17:28something uh so it's
- 17:33starting to come back
- 17:33hopefully yeah yeah there
- 17:37we go uh sorry about that
- 17:39um so last time you talked
- 17:41to kat you're just
- 17:42graduating from college are
- 17:44do you work full-time or
- 17:46part-time doing anything or
- 17:48are you a full-time athlete
- 17:50I work part time and a small
- 17:52animal hospital.
- 17:55Okay.
- 17:56And you, you like that?
- 17:59Yeah, I like it a lot.
- 18:02At first I wanted to, um,
- 18:04like when I graduated,
- 18:05I graduated with a biology degree and, um,
- 18:10I wanted to go to vet school,
- 18:12but I'm not really sure.
- 18:16I like doing it,
- 18:17but I'm not sure because I
- 18:19like CrossFit too,
- 18:20and you can't really do both.
- 18:22I'm not sure if I want to go
- 18:23to school for four more years.
- 18:29Jeffrey Birchfield asks,
- 18:30vet tech or just informally help out?
- 18:35Um, it's, I'm like a vet assistant.
- 18:38I don't have the actual, like,
- 18:39I guess the res,
- 18:41like the license for vet tech yet, but,
- 18:44um, kind of the same thing.
- 18:45Okay, cool.
- 18:50Um, and you, you love animals.
- 18:53Yeah, I love animals.
- 18:55We have, um, like horses,
- 18:58like horses and cows and
- 19:00everything like that.
- 19:01And then I have a German
- 19:04short haired pointer.
- 19:05dog.
- 19:08Okay.
- 19:10And do you have a lot of
- 19:11property for the animals to run?
- 19:13Yeah, so my brother, my middle brother,
- 19:18he ropes,
- 19:21like he does the head and
- 19:22another guy does the heels,
- 19:23like two men team roping.
- 19:26And so he has a Palomino
- 19:29that he ropes with and then
- 19:30he just recently drove to Ohio and got
- 19:34or in Oklahoma and got a red
- 19:37room that he is training to rope as well.
- 19:41And then I just like have
- 19:43like trail road and stuff like that.
- 19:46And then we have like a
- 19:49hundred acres that we have some cows on.
- 19:55And then we have like some
- 19:56land that we lease and this,
- 19:58that and other to keep other cows on.
- 20:00Cause we probably have about,
- 20:0160 to 70 head, but we just kind of like,
- 20:05we have like black Angus and red Harford.
- 20:10And we just kind of like grade them.
- 20:13And so we don't like
- 20:14slaughter them ourselves.
- 20:17Okay.
- 20:18Do you ever, so my,
- 20:21my father-in-law used to
- 20:22raise cows and he would
- 20:24take them to like a butcher,
- 20:26have them do all the work
- 20:29and then he'd get the meat
- 20:30and bring it home.
- 20:32So we did that if, like, one is, like,
- 20:36had a prolapse or, like,
- 20:37something like that.
- 20:39But as far as, like, normally, like,
- 20:42we just, like, sell them at, like,
- 20:43certain ages, like 600, 800 pounds,
- 20:46like kind of calves,
- 20:47just depending on what we have.
- 20:52But we will, like,
- 20:54slaughter or take them somewhere if, like,
- 20:56something happens to them.
- 20:58okay because it's there's no
- 21:01better meat than the stuff
- 21:04you raise yourself right
- 21:06like you know eaten it's
- 21:09not all the nasty stuff you
- 21:11get at the store so I love
- 21:15when my father-in-law does
- 21:17that because we get a lot
- 21:18of the the meat that comes
- 21:19off of that oh yeah a lot
- 21:22can come a lot comes off we
- 21:23just we have one that um
- 21:26we did this past year and we
- 21:29just did it all in ground beef.
- 21:31I think we got a couple of states, this,
- 21:32that, and the other, but like, it's a lot,
- 21:34like our freezer is still like stacked.
- 21:36And like, I have two brothers and then, um,
- 21:39I still live with my parents right now.
- 21:41And like between all of us,
- 21:42like it's still like so
- 21:44much still in the freezer.
- 21:46Yeah.
- 21:47I, those, I love that.
- 21:49Um,
- 21:50I love when we get a ton of ground beef,
- 21:52uh, and that's when,
- 21:53that's all we use when we get that.
- 21:56So Jeffrey Birchfield, again,
- 21:59with a question, asks,
- 22:01did you show FFA or 4-H at any in school?
- 22:07No,
- 22:08I played softball whenever I was in
- 22:11college.
- 22:13So do you know what the FFA or 4-H is?
- 22:19I think he's talking about like horses.
- 22:21Or though he's talking about.
- 22:23Farmers of America.
- 22:25Yeah.
- 22:25Which is like an
- 22:27agricultural organization too.
- 22:30Yeah, no,
- 22:31I didn't really do any of that
- 22:32because I played softball
- 22:34and that's probably about it.
- 22:36I was just playing softball,
- 22:38doing school and working
- 22:39out literally my whole four years.
- 22:45So Carolyn Prevost is one of
- 22:47my co-hosts on one of my other shows.
- 22:50And she always talks about
- 22:51athleticism and that it's
- 22:53rare to find in CrossFit
- 22:55because most athletes are,
- 22:58when they're working on fitness,
- 22:59it's straight ahead stuff.
- 23:02And she played hockey in college.
- 23:05And so a lot of side to side,
- 23:07a lot of athleticism that
- 23:08you don't always see on the floor.
- 23:11You were a shortstop.
- 23:14probably the most athletic
- 23:15position on the softball field.
- 23:20Do you wish the CrossFit
- 23:23Games or CrossFit season
- 23:26would test athleticism a little bit more?
- 23:28Yeah, I feel like they should considering,
- 23:33I mean, CrossFit is a sport,
- 23:35and I think people think
- 23:39when you play a sport, you're athletic,
- 23:42right?
- 23:43I guess athlete, athletic, athlete,
- 23:45athletic kind of comes with
- 23:47any type of sport.
- 23:48And so I feel like, yeah.
- 23:53Yeah.
- 23:54She is, she's a big proponent of that.
- 23:57And an example is rogue
- 23:59always seems to throw in
- 24:01like an athletic event every year.
- 24:03Like this year it was the
- 24:04over under the logs where
- 24:08that takes athleticism to like jump and,
- 24:11throw your body over the log,
- 24:12under the log,
- 24:13over the log kind of thing.
- 24:16Um, and she loves that kind of stuff.
- 24:20Yeah, I did too.
- 24:21I mean, I think the bike,
- 24:23the bike was kind of athletic ish.
- 24:26I mean, um, I thought it was fun.
- 24:28I mean, I'd never really like, I guess,
- 24:32I guess people can like,
- 24:33I guess train that,
- 24:34but I had never really, like I was on a,
- 24:38I'd,
- 24:39like, rode a bike as a kid, so I kind of,
- 24:42I mean, I had rode the bike around, like,
- 24:44just, like, a couple miles, like, for,
- 24:47like, an hour or so, like,
- 24:49on the road and this, that, and other,
- 24:50like, in my hometown, but as far as,
- 24:52like,
- 24:54on grass like I didn't have
- 24:55that I just had like a road
- 24:56bike so as far as like on
- 24:58grass gravel getting off
- 25:00running or whatever I had I
- 25:01didn't do any of that and
- 25:02no paticing for that going
- 25:04on to the games I was just
- 25:05kind of like in like little
- 25:07I was just kind of being
- 25:08athletic and going back to
- 25:11like just I guess when I
- 25:12was a kid and like just I
- 25:14just felt like a kid out
- 25:15there honestly it was fun
- 25:16just riding I would just
- 25:17feel like riding a bike
- 25:18like it back in the good
- 25:19old days and just I don't know
- 25:22Yeah,
- 25:22I think that's what an athlete would do,
- 25:25right?
- 25:25But the athletic part of it
- 25:26was the getting off, lifting it up,
- 25:29jumping over the barrier,
- 25:31getting back on.
- 25:32I think that's where the
- 25:33athleticism came in.
- 25:35Like anybody can ride a bike
- 25:37straight ahead.
- 25:38But getting off, getting on, lifting it up,
- 25:41carrying it,
- 25:43like that takes a lot of athleticism.
- 25:45I agree.
- 25:48Yeah.
- 25:50so um so is how is life
- 25:54different now than it was
- 25:55when you talked to cat two
- 25:56years ago you were just
- 25:57getting out of college
- 25:59didn't probably really know
- 26:00what your future looked
- 26:01like now it's kind of
- 26:02coming into formation a
- 26:03little bit yeah so I guess
- 26:07when I talked to her
- 26:10I mean, I didn't have a coach, obviously.
- 26:12I was just like,
- 26:14I would like wake up at like 5 a.m.
- 26:17or earlier.
- 26:18I would go to CrossFit.
- 26:20Then I would go to classes.
- 26:23Then I would go to squeeze
- 26:25another CrossFit workout in.
- 26:26And then I would go to
- 26:28softball practice until like
- 26:32six, six 30, then I do homework, go to bed,
- 26:35basically do it all over again.
- 26:36And then like, depending on games, this,
- 26:39that, and other, like the quarterfinals,
- 26:41those two years, um,
- 26:44I did some of those workouts.
- 26:45We had get away games or we
- 26:48had like that weekend.
- 26:49And so I did some of like,
- 26:51I was squeezing in all those workouts,
- 26:52did some of those workouts at like four,
- 26:55not four,
- 26:55like five or six in the morning
- 26:57before I had to get on a
- 26:58bus and go do like a softball game.
- 27:01And so like now I guess I am
- 27:03working part time,
- 27:05but I feel like I have a little more like
- 27:10time and commitment and
- 27:12energy and everything to
- 27:13put into just CrossFit
- 27:15instead of kind of running
- 27:18around rushing and everything like that.
- 27:23This also happened.
- 27:26You found a, in the field and on it,
- 27:30it said, will you marry me?
- 27:36So are you now?
- 27:36Yeah.
- 27:42So we got together in the junior,
- 27:51senior year, kind of in there.
- 27:54And so we've been together for,
- 27:56it'll be four years in
- 27:58November of this year.
- 27:59Does he CrossFit?
- 28:05He works out with me.
- 28:07He's a state trooper,
- 28:10so he works out with me
- 28:11just to stay in shape for
- 28:12the job and stay healthy
- 28:14and fit and everything like that.
- 28:16Nothing competitive,
- 28:17but just like your everyday CrossFitter.
- 28:23They just started the
- 28:25service competition and the
- 28:28everyday heroes at Mayhem.
- 28:29I don't know if you heard about that.
- 28:34I hadn't really heard about that.
- 28:36Yeah, Everyday Heroes is really fun.
- 28:38Mayhem is doing it.
- 28:40It's a program thing,
- 28:42and if you're in a military
- 28:44service or a frontline
- 28:46nurse medical field, a teacher,
- 28:49or law enforcement, or fire,
- 28:53you can enter.
- 28:53The top male and the top
- 28:56female from each bracket,
- 28:59they're bringing to Cookville...
- 29:01putting them on a team like the fire team,
- 29:04the law enforcement team,
- 29:06the teacher team,
- 29:07and then they're going to
- 29:08compete against each other.
- 29:09That's pretty cool.
- 29:12Yeah.
- 29:14Great concept by Mayhem,
- 29:15and they should be applauded for that.
- 29:18Oh, yeah.
- 29:19My middle brother is also a state trooper.
- 29:23Wow.
- 29:24You're all around the law enforcement.
- 29:26Yeah.
- 29:27You can't get away with anything.
- 29:29No, which he, my middle brother,
- 29:32he became one my junior
- 29:36year of high school.
- 29:38So he's been on a little bit longer,
- 29:39but he's older than Trace.
- 29:42But I was with Trace
- 29:44whenever he went through
- 29:45trooper school and everything like that.
- 29:47So Kenneth,
- 29:51the lab says cool and unique proposal.
- 29:55Yeah, we were just like going on.
- 29:58a walk because we walk with
- 30:00like our dogs or just to
- 30:02look for sheds or just you
- 30:04know outdoor being outdoor
- 30:06a lot so it wasn't anything
- 30:10like either normal and um
- 30:14he had recently um bought
- 30:17some land that's kind of
- 30:17backed up to like his
- 30:18parents house now and
- 30:21So we were just on a walk,
- 30:23walking from like his house around.
- 30:24There's like a trail or
- 30:25whatever to his land.
- 30:27And then like once you get on his land,
- 30:29the hill kind of rolls.
- 30:31And so we were walking and
- 30:34there was something like
- 30:35shiny in the field, which was the antler.
- 30:37And like I went up and got
- 30:38it and then turned around
- 30:40and he was on one knee.
- 30:42But then like but our
- 30:43families were like over the
- 30:45hill so they could kind of see.
- 30:47But it happened so quick and everything.
- 30:50So but they were all there as well.
- 30:53That's really cool.
- 30:55And congratulations.
- 30:57So is there a date set or
- 30:59are you guys just waiting
- 31:00till after the season to
- 31:02kind of sit down and talk about it?
- 31:05It'll be next year in September of 2025.
- 31:10Okay.
- 31:12So I have a lot of time to plan.
- 31:15So I want to finish up with
- 31:17just a couple of questions
- 31:18going into semis.
- 31:19So you'll be in the East, right?
- 31:21Um, you got a lot at 11 spots,
- 31:25I think it was.
- 31:27Yeah, we did.
- 31:28Last year you took 10th.
- 31:30Is there,
- 31:31is there any trepidation about
- 31:32like where you were on that
- 31:33line or are you more
- 31:35confident this year going
- 31:36in than last year?
- 31:37Uh,
- 31:39I'm definitely more confident this year
- 31:41than last year.
- 31:42I mean, last year I had never made it.
- 31:43So, I mean, I was confident in myself,
- 31:47but I hadn't did it yet.
- 31:49But this year I feel like
- 31:51I'm more fit than last year.
- 31:58Yeah.
- 32:00It's such a stacked field.
- 32:02And for you to come out of that last year,
- 32:04so impressive.
- 32:06Thank you.
- 32:08The workouts have been announced.
- 32:12I'm sure you know them by heart now.
- 32:14Is there anything in there
- 32:15that you really like?
- 32:20I mean...
- 32:22I like them all.
- 32:23There's nothing really... I don't know.
- 32:27I mean, I like them all.
- 32:29Yeah.
- 32:29What I like about them is they all have,
- 32:32like,
- 32:32an element of one facet of CrossFit
- 32:36with another facet.
- 32:38Like,
- 32:39you have to be balanced in your
- 32:41abilities to be good because...
- 32:45cleaning jerks are matched
- 32:46with a run and row is
- 32:47matched with a handstand walk.
- 32:49And like everything has, it's like,
- 32:52I keep calling it the yin and the yang.
- 32:55Yeah, I think it's very good.
- 32:56Like you can't just be good at one thing.
- 32:58Like there, like you just said,
- 33:01it's paired with like a
- 33:04strength is paired with a
- 33:06cardio or like a gymnastics
- 33:07is paired with this.
- 33:09Like you have to,
- 33:11it's going to show the all around.
- 33:14fit for better athlete at the end.
- 33:21You had your games experience last year.
- 33:24When you make it this year,
- 33:25we're going to say when you
- 33:26make it this year,
- 33:27it's going to be in Texas in a big,
- 33:30huge arena and mostly indoors.
- 33:33Are you excited about that?
- 33:36Oh, yeah, I'm excited to go to Texas.
- 33:40But as far as the indoor, outdoor, I mean,
- 33:43I only had one experience in Wisconsin,
- 33:46so I'm not really too opposed or have,
- 33:52I guess, a lot of opinions on it.
- 33:57Yeah, it's going to be different,
- 33:59and nobody really knows what that means.
- 34:02It's a much bigger arena than the Coliseum,
- 34:05so they'll probably be able
- 34:06to do more indoor than they could.
- 34:09And there's still going to
- 34:10be a little bit out there.
- 34:11There has to be.
- 34:14You have to test athleticism outside,
- 34:16right?
- 34:16Right.
- 34:19So...
- 34:21you can't do a bike race
- 34:22inside the arena you can't
- 34:25do a 5k inside the arena so
- 34:28right right yeah one or two
- 34:30events have to be outside
- 34:31right I hope yeah I hope so
- 34:33too well caroline I want to
- 34:36thank you so much for
- 34:37jumping on with us this has
- 34:38been really fun talking to
- 34:39you thank you for having me
- 34:42Yeah, and congratulations on the proposal.
- 34:45And hopefully you can
- 34:46celebrate that with a bid
- 34:49to the CrossFit Games in
- 34:50just a couple weeks.
- 34:52That's the plan.
- 34:53Well, thank you, everybody,
- 34:55to the chat for being here.
- 34:56You guys are awesome as always.
- 34:59And we'll see everybody next
- 35:00time on the Clydesdale
- 35:02Media Podcast presents the
- 35:04Athletes of the 2024
- 35:06CrossFit Games Semifinals.
- 35:08Bye, guys.
