- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to SEC Football Addiction. We are presented by PrizePix.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I am TJ Pittenger. He's Will Thomas from Tailgate Talk
- 0:05Speaker 1: SEC and a peek inside SEC Football. Will, has everybody
- 0:09Speaker 1: forgotten about Georgia? Is Kirby planning on playing football this year?
- 0:14Speaker 1: So much talk around obviously everything going on in Baton Rouge.
- 0:17Speaker 1: So much talk around Texas' talent. Obviously there's talk around Miami,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Notre Dame, Ohio State. Georgia's kind of the quiet team
- 0:23Speaker 1: that everybody just pencils into the playoff and doesn't worry about,
- 0:27Speaker 1: but have people forgotten about how good Georgia is and
- 0:30Speaker 1: really will be this year?
- 0:32Speaker 2: It kind of seems like it. And yeah, Georgia didn't
- 0:33Speaker 2: go out and make a bunch of noise in the portal, right?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Their biggest recruiting headline was losing Jared Curtis to Vanderbilt.
- 0:40Speaker 2: So you didn't really see a whole bunch of positive
- 0:42Speaker 2: roster ads for the Bulldogs this offseason. It's because they
- 0:45Speaker 2: didn't really need it, right? Gunner Stockton's back. They're a quarterback.
- 0:47Speaker 2: You kept your top two running backs. The offensive line,
- 0:50Speaker 2: both lines should be very, very strong. I do have
- 0:52Speaker 2: some questions defensively on the D-line, but the secondary under
- 0:55Speaker 2: Kirby Smart is always going to be good. I mean,
- 0:57Speaker 2: 24-7 is team talent composite. I believe Georgia was number one, right?
- 1:01Speaker 2: They still have one of the best rosters in the
- 1:02Speaker 2: entire country. And yeah, I mean, Georgia going one down
- 1:05Speaker 2: the playoffs the past two years is a bit of
- 1:07Speaker 2: a bad taste nationally. They also just keep winning the SEC.
- 1:10Speaker 2: They keep running through their conference schedule. So Georgia is
- 1:13Speaker 2: still incredibly good. Kirby Smart is still one of the
- 1:15Speaker 2: best coaches in the country. So just because they've kind
- 1:18Speaker 2: of missed that flash, obviously this offseason was dominated by
- 1:20Speaker 2: a lot more headlines that weren't even football related. So
- 1:23Speaker 2: they kind of got swept under the rug there. But
- 1:25Speaker 2: This Georgia team, I'm going to sleep on them if
- 1:26Speaker 2: you want to, but they're going to be right back
- 1:27Speaker 2: where they were last year.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Yeah, it would surprise both of us, I believe, if
- 1:31Speaker 1: they weren't in Athens. I'm sorry, in Athens. In Atlanta.
- 1:34Speaker 1: It would shock me if they weren't in Athens. Maybe
- 1:38Speaker 1: they'll just start hosting it there at home because they
- 1:41Speaker 1: always are there. But it would surprise me if they're
- 1:43Speaker 1: not back in Atlanta for another trip to the conference championship.
- 1:48Speaker 1: I want to talk about the schedule here in just
- 1:50Speaker 1: a moment, but what out of camp has maybe surprised
- 1:53Speaker 1: you or gotten you even more excited about Georgia outside
- 1:56Speaker 1: of them, again, according to 24-7 Sports, being the most
- 1:59Speaker 1: talented team, being the favorite to win the SEC, all
- 2:02Speaker 1: of those things. What, coming out of camp, has you
- 2:03Speaker 1: kind of jacked about UGA?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Well, my biggest question about them was receiver, and that's
- 2:07Speaker 2: not a very in-depth analysis from me. That's kind of
- 2:10Speaker 2: the nationally biggest question about Georgia, is do they have
- 2:13Speaker 2: an explosive, do they have a big-time playmaker downfield? Talon Taylor,
- 2:16Speaker 2: as a redshirt freshman, he only had two catches last year,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but he is blowing up. He's come on really, really strong,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and there's a bunch of, there's a vacancy in that
- 2:23Speaker 2: receiver room for a big-time producer, right? London Humphreys is back,
- 2:26Speaker 2: that's all good, but like, he's not quite that explosive playmaker, like,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, go win a job all downfield. Talon Taylor
- 2:32Speaker 2: might be able to do that, right? So he's a
- 2:33Speaker 2: big-time step up in that receiver room if he keeps developing.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And then Ernest Green at offensive tackle, he is a
- 2:38Speaker 2: redshirt senior. He was 13 while SEC last year. He
- 2:41Speaker 2: is a very much on-the-radar player. But after all that,
- 2:44Speaker 2: he's still having, quote, his best camp ever. So he's
- 2:47Speaker 2: really taking the big time step and tackle there. And defensively,
- 2:49Speaker 2: Georgia's safety room might be one of the best in
- 2:51Speaker 2: the entire country depth-wise. And Kyron Jones is a retro
- 2:54Speaker 2: junior there. He's emerging to be just another name in
- 2:57Speaker 2: that room. So Georgia's back end, their secondary, obviously Ellis
- 3:00Speaker 2: Robinson is that guy at corner. But the safety room
- 3:02Speaker 2: is just as strong. So I think Georgia's DB is
- 3:04Speaker 2: obviously coached by Kirby. Really high pedigree. They should be
- 3:07Speaker 2: as strong as ever. And there's just a bunch of
- 3:09Speaker 2: pieces for Georgia. Kind of that positions where people have
- 3:12Speaker 2: some questions. And they're emerging and kind of starting to
- 3:14Speaker 2: answer those already here in the preseason.
- 3:16Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on, and we've talked about this,
- 3:19Speaker 1: and I've talked with UGA folks about this, they do
- 3:22Speaker 1: just keep winning. And I think they've been a little
- 3:25Speaker 1: unlucky in the playoffs. I mean, they beat every opponent
- 3:28Speaker 1: they faced last year. They lost one game to Bama,
- 3:30Speaker 1: beat them in a rematch. Beat Ole Miss, lost to
- 3:33Speaker 1: them in a rematch. The year before that, they lose
- 3:35Speaker 1: to Notre Dame, they don't have a quarterback playing. Gunner's there,
- 3:39Speaker 1: and that's no slight at him now. But They lose
- 3:41Speaker 1: their quarterback in back, you know, the game before. I
- 3:46Speaker 1: think Georgia is a lot better than they've shown in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the playoff the last two years. And I think Ole
- 3:51Speaker 1: Miss certainly deserved that, even with the heroics from Trinidad
- 3:55Speaker 1: last year in the playoff. I think, you know, Ole
- 3:58Speaker 1: Miss left some points on the board in the first half,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and it really maybe shouldn't have been as close as
- 4:02Speaker 1: it was. But when you look at how they've finished
- 4:05Speaker 1: the last two years, I know there's some frustration about
- 4:08Speaker 1: the way that the season has ended. I look at
- 4:11Speaker 1: their schedule this year, and I see the start against
- 4:15Speaker 1: Tennessee State and then Western Kentucky and then Arkansas on
- 4:17Speaker 1: the road with a new coach. You have Oklahoma coming
- 4:20Speaker 1: to Athens, but then you have Vandy. I think they've
- 4:23Speaker 1: got a great chance to go into Tuscaloosa at 5-0.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I don't think that game is going to sink them,
- 4:28Speaker 1: even if they're not able to win it. And then
- 4:30Speaker 1: you look at the back half. They have a new
- 4:32Speaker 1: coach against Auburn. They have a new coach against Florida.
- 4:35Speaker 1: New coach against Ole Miss. Missouri, who we talked about
- 4:37Speaker 1: in our A & M segment, cannot beat a team
- 4:39Speaker 1: above 500. I love Georgia to win that. I think
- 4:42Speaker 1: they beat South Carolina. And then, of course, I think
- 4:43Speaker 1: they beat Georgia Tech. My big picture question is, this
- 4:47Speaker 1: might be an opportunity for Georgia to get to the
- 4:49Speaker 1: playoffs a little less banged up than they normally have.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And I don't mean to call Georgia's schedule easy. I'm
- 4:55Speaker 1: not trying. But I don't think the path this year
- 4:57Speaker 1: for Georgia is incredibly difficult. I think you play two
- 5:00Speaker 1: marquee opponents in Oklahoma and Bama. Ole Miss, I'm TBD on.
- 5:06Speaker 1: They certainly could beat you. That game's up in the Grove.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But really, if you go 1-2 in that stretch, which
- 5:12Speaker 1: I think they'll go 2-1 at worst, they're going to
- 5:15Speaker 1: be back in the playoff. They're going to get more
- 5:16Speaker 1: time off because I think they get a bye. I
- 5:19Speaker 1: think this is a chance for Georgia to get back
- 5:20Speaker 1: to the postseason and not be as beat up as
- 5:22Speaker 1: they have been the last two years. I will get
- 5:24Speaker 1: right back to chatting with Will, but first I want
- 5:26Speaker 1: to give some love to our friends over at PrizePix.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Right now, all new users who play $ 5 and win
- 5:30Speaker 1: that first lineup get $ 150 in lineups instantly if they
- 5:32Speaker 1: use code HMA. We have actual real-life football happening today
- 5:37Speaker 1: and then until the end of January. So make sure
- 5:40Speaker 1: you are on the Price Picks app. Listen, based on
- 5:43Speaker 1: when you saw this video, these games might have already happened,
- 5:46Speaker 1: so you can just grade me at this point. But
- 5:47Speaker 1: I've been telling you all week, I like the Ashton
- 5:49Speaker 1: Daniels rushing total. Go get that. It's 38.5 yards. I
- 5:53Speaker 1: think Florida State runs him a few times. I'll be
- 5:55Speaker 1: there at the game, hopefully not to see a meltdown
- 5:58Speaker 1: by my knolls. But I like that rushing total a lot.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Jaden Maiava's passing yards is a free play right now.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I know it's his touchdowns that you can kind of
- 6:06Speaker 1: see in some places, but it's not on the screenshot.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Jaden Maiava's passing yards is set at. 5. You pick that,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you're going to win it. I don't foresee him having
- 6:15Speaker 1: a game with negative passing yards or zero passing yards
- 6:18Speaker 1: against San Jose State. Pair something together like that, you've
- 6:21Speaker 1: got yourself a lineup. Again, appreciate PrizePix for their support.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Go check them out.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is hard to get an easy SEC
- 6:27Speaker 2: schedule with nine conference games now, but not drawing either
- 6:30Speaker 2: Texas school, not drawing LSU, and obviously they can't play themselves.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That's four of the projected best teams in the SEC
- 6:36Speaker 2: that's not on Georgia's schedule. So Oklahoma, really good team. Alabama,
- 6:40Speaker 2: at Ole Miss, really tough. Who's the other SEC contender
- 6:43Speaker 2: on their schedule? There's not really one. So it's kind
- 6:45Speaker 2: of like A & M' s schedule last year almost where
- 6:47Speaker 2: you have a bunch of bottom feeders, but I'm definitely
- 6:48Speaker 2: not going to hold that against Georgia at all because
- 6:50Speaker 2: I expect that the Dawgs are going to go into
- 6:52Speaker 2: those games and kind of dominate. Because even back at
- 6:55Speaker 2: last year, a bunch of tough games. They were down,
- 6:57Speaker 2: I think, in almost the second half, in almost all
- 7:00Speaker 2: of those.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah, Florida, Auburn. Yeah, they didn't look the same last year.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it was literally like 12 war zones. So
- 7:08Speaker 2: if you don't go through that this year, you just
- 7:10Speaker 2: have your couple of spots. Maybe the Gator game is
- 7:12Speaker 2: close again. Maybe Missouri has got a good offense close again.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I don't think this will be as trying of a
- 7:17Speaker 2: 12 games as they had last year. So then if
- 7:20Speaker 2: they go back to Atlanta, win that game again, I
- 7:22Speaker 2: guess who will be a really tough opponent? But yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 2: maybe to your point, they probably are going to be
- 7:25Speaker 2: just a little less beat up or just a little
- 7:27Speaker 2: less strained. Just way less of all this, it'll still
- 7:31Speaker 2: be a tense regular season, obviously, but just way less,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you know, fourth quarter battles where you have to be
- 7:35Speaker 2: going 100% every single snap until the very end. Just
- 7:39Speaker 2: a couple more games where you just win by 17,
- 7:40Speaker 2: you can just exhale in the fourth quarter. That, I think,
- 7:43Speaker 2: would go a long way once they get to the playoff.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I wonder, again, playing all those first-year head coaches, which
- 7:50Speaker 1: I know Pete maybe isn't the best one to use there,
- 7:52Speaker 1: but you play Arkansas, you play Auburn, you play Florida.
- 7:56Speaker 1: And then, again, who's coaching South Carolina by the time
- 7:59Speaker 1: you get to that game? Who knows? And then Pete
- 8:01Speaker 1: is a first-year head coach. Whether you give him a
- 8:04Speaker 1: little credit for the playoff or not last year, he
- 8:06Speaker 1: still is. So it's figuring all that out. What does
- 8:09Speaker 1: that season look like by the time you get to
- 8:11Speaker 1: that game?
- 8:12Speaker 2: I do.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I think it presents a really good opportunity for Georgia.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Are they... You told me that 247 has them one
- 8:20Speaker 1: or very near the top in their total team composite.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Do they still look like a team that can go
- 8:25Speaker 1: out and win a national championship to you?
- 8:27Speaker 2: It's weird. I heard this on a show when I
- 8:30Speaker 2: was driving today, too. They seem like the clear-cut favorite
- 8:32Speaker 2: in the SEC, but then all of a sudden I
- 8:35Speaker 2: think about them in the playoff, and I don't know
- 8:36Speaker 2: if they can go win four playoff games. And maybe
- 8:38Speaker 2: that's just because I'm kind of falling victim to what
- 8:41Speaker 2: the nation did, and that's like we're just kind of
- 8:43Speaker 2: bored with it. You know, like, there's nothing flashy. There's
- 8:45Speaker 2: nothing super exciting about it. But then, you know, looking
- 8:47Speaker 2: at their roster, they're going to be able to run
- 8:49Speaker 2: the hell out of the ball. They're going to still
- 8:50Speaker 2: be more physical than every team they play against. Defensively,
- 8:53Speaker 2: their pass rush, right, that was the biggest question last year.
- 8:55Speaker 2: They only had 20 sacks last season. 12 of those
- 8:57Speaker 2: came in their last, like, five games. Like, the pass
- 8:59Speaker 2: rush came on. And a lot of those guys are
- 9:01Speaker 2: back this year. So, you know, are my concerns about
- 9:05Speaker 2: the receiver true? I think they might be. And then
- 9:07Speaker 2: at that point, like, if they fall down by 10,
- 9:09Speaker 2: do they have the horses to come back in that game?
- 9:11Speaker 2: That's my only question. But, you know, People have doubted
- 9:15Speaker 2: Kirby and Georgia for a long time and they keep
- 9:16Speaker 2: on winning games. And I'll do it and I'll be
- 9:18Speaker 2: wrong again, but it does kind of feel like they're
- 9:21Speaker 2: not quite up there with the other title contenders like
- 9:24Speaker 2: Texas and the SEC or just Oregon and Ohio State
- 9:27Speaker 2: or Miami or Notre Dame. It does feel like they're
- 9:30Speaker 2: almost a little bit behind them, even though you go
- 9:31Speaker 2: through their roster and they're just as talented, if not
- 9:33Speaker 2: more so than those schools.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Yeah, and I wonder if that's some of the SEC
- 9:36Speaker 1: perception that we've lost too. If the SEC had won
- 9:39Speaker 1: the last three titles, I mean, to be fair, Georgia
- 9:41Speaker 1: would probably have one or two of them. But if
- 9:43Speaker 1: the SEC had won the last three titles, we might
- 9:45Speaker 1: think of it a little bit differently. And it's almost
- 9:47Speaker 1: like the SEC is kind of getting forgotten about. They've
- 9:49Speaker 1: made things tougher on themselves with a nine-game schedule. But
- 9:51Speaker 1: Georgia is just there and plugging along. And I think
- 9:54Speaker 1: the bad luck that they've run into in the playoffs
- 9:57Speaker 1: the last two years, Trinidad playing backyard football, injuries, Beck
- 10:01Speaker 1: going down, all those things. I mean, people even forget, like, shoot,
- 10:05Speaker 1: before that Notre Dame game that happened, like the tragedy
- 10:07Speaker 1: that happened in New Orleans downtown. I think they've run
- 10:11Speaker 1: into some bad luck. And I think that mixed with
- 10:14Speaker 1: the SEC underperforming in the postseason and Georgia going 0-2
- 10:18Speaker 1: in the playoff the last two years, I think that
- 10:20Speaker 1: has made people kind of forget about the Bulldogs, and
- 10:23Speaker 1: I think Kirby Smart is fine with that. I think
- 10:25Speaker 1: he's like, yeah, bring it on. I have to lie
- 10:26Speaker 1: to these guys and tell them that they're underrated and
- 10:31Speaker 1: get them to believe that nobody believes in them in 2022.
- 10:32Speaker 1: So now I don't have to do that because nobody
- 10:36Speaker 1: does believe in them anymore. So now the motivation is real, and, yeah,
- 10:39Speaker 1: I think they'll be there. I think they'll be in–
- 10:42Speaker 1: I think they'll make the top six. It's hard to
- 10:44Speaker 1: project like, oh, well, this team wins this conference, but
- 10:46Speaker 1: this many win. I think they'll make the top six.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I would expect them to be in the semifinal, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: then from there, I think it's who's healthy and who's hot.
- 10:54Speaker 1: So that's kind of what I see for Georgia. Are
- 10:56Speaker 1: you at 11-1 for them?
- 10:58Speaker 2: I think I'm closer to 10-2. I just think that
- 11:00Speaker 2: BAM and the Ole Miss games are obviously two hardest ones.
- 11:02Speaker 2: But then, like, Oklahoma at home, they could bite you.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I mean, they beat BAM on the road last year.
- 11:07Speaker 2: At South Carolina, we talked about, I mean, their variability
- 11:09Speaker 2: is crazy. They could either have fired Shane Beamer, or
- 11:12Speaker 2: they might be 8-2 and trying to make the playoff
- 11:14Speaker 2: at that point. So really, the Carolina game is a
- 11:16Speaker 2: total crapshoot. Georgia Tech, You could make the point of
- 11:18Speaker 2: a rivalry. That game kind of seems to defy that
- 11:20Speaker 2: logic sometimes. I might be closer to 10-2 just because of,
- 11:24Speaker 2: you know, at least they still have a good chunk
- 11:26Speaker 2: of tough games. But 11-1 wouldn't shock me at all
- 11:28Speaker 2: because I think that win total did pop up to 10.5.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I think it's the highest one in the conference now.
- 11:32Speaker 2: So I do think double-digit wins probably. I might lean
- 11:35Speaker 2: a bit towards 10-2, but 11-1 will not shock me
- 11:37Speaker 2: at all, yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He is Will Thomas. You can go find him on
- 11:40Speaker 1: social media. Will Thomas, CFB, Tailgate Talk, SEC. A peek
- 11:45Speaker 1: inside SEC football. We appreciate you for hanging out, man.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Thanks, TJ.
