- 0:00Well, this morning, I've had this word brewing
- 0:05for a couple of weeks here, and my process in
- 0:11approaching a sermon varies depending on the
- 0:16type of sermon and what the Holy Spirit is speaking.
- 0:19But I had felt this, the Holy Spirit speak a
- 0:23specific thing. And sometimes when I specifically
- 0:27am feeling the Holy Spirit wanting to bring a
- 0:30word, it can be a difficult process getting that
- 0:34out of my spirit and onto the paper. It truly
- 0:38is kind of a birthing, and sometimes I get really
- 0:41frustrated because I can hear what the Holy Spirit
- 0:45is wanting to do and say, and conveying that,
- 0:49it's not always easy. But this morning, and if
- 0:56I were to title this, which I guess I am for
- 0:59Nick, who will appreciate it, it is this, Following
- 1:02Jesus into the Greater. And I was thinking a
- 1:08couple of weeks ago about the issue of obedience.
- 1:13And often when we think of obedience, things
- 1:17that we are called to obey, we did it this morning,
- 1:20we're called to obey in our giving, we're called
- 1:23to crucify the flesh, we're called to love our
- 1:27neighbor. I don't know, a couple times this week
- 1:29I was having trouble feeling neighborly with
- 1:33the noise. We're called to forgive. We're called
- 1:37to encourage. We're called to prayer. We're called
- 1:41to gratitude. We're called to hospitality. We're
- 1:44called to honoring parents, and sometimes that's
- 1:46hard to do. We're called to submit to authorities,
- 1:50and sometimes that's hard to do. I was thinking
- 1:52of all of the things when we hear called to obedience,
- 1:56and it seems like it's often hard things. And
- 2:01I kept feeling this, but Lord, I feel this call
- 2:04to obedience into the greater things. It's the
- 2:11only way I know how to convey this. And soon
- 2:15the question became, is it really a call to obedience
- 2:18that I'm hearing, or is it a call to repentance
- 2:23that I'm hearing? And he took me to John chapter
- 2:2814. Where Jesus is talking and he says, very
- 2:35truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will
- 2:41do the works I have been doing. And they will
- 2:45do even greater things than these. Because I'm
- 2:49going to the Father. And I will do whatever you
- 2:53ask in my name. So that the Father may be glorified
- 2:59in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my
- 3:04name and I will do it. That's what Jesus stated.
- 3:12And what I didn't want today is an emotionally
- 3:17driven, he will do anything if you do it in his
- 3:22name. Let's go. I didn't want, what I feel in
- 3:25my spirit concerning this message is, In fact,
- 3:30I remembered years ago at our previous church
- 3:33a specific service. And I remember I was down
- 3:38here sitting cross -legged at the altar. And
- 3:42somebody brought a word about preparing for battle
- 3:46and we're going into battle. And all around me,
- 3:50everybody was standing and cheering. I have goosebumps
- 3:53thinking of that moment right now. I remember
- 3:56in my spirit saying, no. You're not, I received
- 4:03that word that was given. I knew it to be true.
- 4:07But I did not think our response was the right
- 4:11response. It was not a, yeah, let's, I felt there
- 4:17is some deep battle coming. And we've got to
- 4:21be prepared. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan,
- 4:25it's when they're about to go out to battle and
- 4:27they are so few in number, they're calling their
- 4:31young boys to battle. And they're talking about
- 4:36the fear that is in the camp because of the heaviness
- 4:39of the battle. And that was what I felt in that
- 4:42moment. We should not be cheering. We need to
- 4:44get on our faces because we're going into a battle.
- 4:50I kind of felt that same kind of response to
- 4:54this word that the Holy Spirit put inside of
- 4:57me. And earlier, even when Pastor Ben was talking
- 5:02about being called to become like Christ and
- 5:08to walk like Christ, we think about doing that,
- 5:14yes. as becoming in the character of Christ,
- 5:18don't we? When we talk about becoming like Christ,
- 5:21we're thinking about his character in light of
- 5:24the gifts or the fruit of the Holy Spirit, right?
- 5:28Because Jesus had self -control. Jesus was kind,
- 5:31right? We think of all of those things in becoming
- 5:35like Jesus. What I feel Holy Spirit putting inside
- 5:40of me is that he is calling us to not just be
- 5:44like him in character, but to follow him into
- 5:47becoming what he looked like and what he did.
- 5:52In the works that he did. In fact, the small
- 5:57group that we just finished in practicing the
- 6:00way we talk, what we say is that we be with Jesus.
- 6:06We become like Jesus, but it doesn't end in the
- 6:09becoming like him. We do what Jesus did. And
- 6:14often we end where we be with Jesus, we become
- 6:17like Jesus, but we have no expectation of doing
- 6:22the works that Jesus did, and even beyond that,
- 6:26what Jesus said, the greater works. We have no
- 6:30expectation of that in our lives. Oh, maybe the
- 6:35pastor or the elders might do that. No. He's
- 6:40called for you to be with Jesus, to become like
- 6:45Jesus, and to do the things that Jesus did. So
- 6:52this morning, my call is more of a call to contend
- 6:57for these things that Jesus has said we ought
- 7:03to be operating in. We ought to be doing these
- 7:08things. We ought to be doing the works he did.
- 7:12Well, what did Jesus do? We think of the works
- 7:15that he did in hanging out with the sinners.
- 7:18Oh yeah, I'll go and hang out with some sinners.
- 7:21I'll invite people to my table. We get uncomfortable,
- 7:25though, sometimes with the idea that, well, wait
- 7:28a minute, he also prayed over blind eyes and
- 7:30they were healed. He also cast out demons and
- 7:33they were delivered. He also multiplied things
- 7:37like wine for the wedding feast in their day
- 7:39-to -day lives. And it was last year, I think,
- 7:44at some point when we talked about how we should
- 7:47live our ordinary life. And see, this was ordinary
- 7:52life for Jesus. This was how he did his day -to
- 7:57-day. Oh, I'm going to go to a wedding with my
- 7:59mom? Well, let's multiply some wine for them.
- 8:03They're a little short. He brought into his everyday
- 8:08ordinary the greater works. And I believe that
- 8:14the Holy Spirit is calling us to this. Why? Why?
- 8:21Because it's not enough. the culture that we
- 8:25live in, to preach a gospel, there must be accompanying
- 8:30it signs and wonders. It's not enough to just
- 8:36talk out there. They want the evidence of what
- 8:41we're saying to be true. And you're going to
- 8:46be hearing more about this, but I talked with
- 8:49our leadership team last Tuesday night about
- 8:52this. The World Assemblies of God, of which the
- 8:56U .S. is part of, and it's all of the nation's
- 8:59Assemblies of God, are under the umbrella of
- 9:02the World Assemblies of God. They have made a
- 9:06hard push into unengaged people groups, of which
- 9:12there are 2 ,085. These are not just unreached
- 9:17people groups. Unreached are considered... less
- 9:21than 2 % of Christians. These are unengaged people
- 9:26groups where there has not been any known engagement
- 9:29with the gospel whatsoever, 2 ,085 of them. And
- 9:36so the World Assemblies of God has said in 2033,
- 9:40who knows what 2033 is? Now, see, I asked that
- 9:47question at the leadership meeting. They all
- 9:49weren't that quick with their answer. It's the
- 9:532 ,000 -year anniversary of the death and resurrection
- 9:58and ascension of Jesus. And so what they're saying
- 10:02is, we want to bring a gift to Jesus in 2033.
- 10:07We want to bring the gift of nations to Jesus.
- 10:12And you're going to be hearing more about that.
- 10:14But what I'm hearing, why? Why do we need to
- 10:17be doing what Jesus did? Because there are 2
- 10:21,085 people groups. Do you know what happens
- 10:24when every tribe and every tongue and every nation
- 10:28has heard of the gospel of Jesus Christ? Come,
- 10:32Lord Jesus, come. The end is at hand is what
- 10:37it means. And I believe that you and I, I don't
- 10:43care if you feel a call to ministry like I do
- 10:46or not, you are part of the family of God, which
- 10:50means you're on the mission of Jesus. He's the
- 10:53head. And so we have to be saying, taking ownership,
- 10:56not just of our Jerusalem, but of our Judea and
- 11:00our Samaria and the uttermost parts of the world,
- 11:03and saying, Lord, we want to take responsibility
- 11:05for the 2085. unengaged people groups. How does
- 11:12that happen? By doing the greater works that
- 11:17Jesus did. I feel the call. I feel as he was
- 11:22stirring this in me, the call. It is time. There
- 11:28is about to be a Holy Spirit movement happening
- 11:32that we've not seen. It is time. For us to engage
- 11:39in what Jesus, what his expectation was. And
- 11:45what was his expectation? Whoever believes in
- 11:49me will do the works I have been doing. This
- 11:53is his expectation for us. It's why he ascended.
- 11:59It's why he went to the Father, that the Holy
- 12:01Spirit could come. And through the power of the
- 12:04Holy Spirit. We could do whatever we would ask
- 12:10in his name, he would do. And so, as I was reading
- 12:16this passage of Jesus, there are three areas
- 12:19that I feel that we need to repent and contend
- 12:22for. And the first one is in the area of our
- 12:27expectation. Jesus expected us to do these things.
- 12:37It's our own selves that get in the way of that.
- 12:41We don't align our expectation with what Jesus
- 12:46expected. In fact, in Luke chapter 6, Jesus said,
- 12:54given it will be given to you, a good measure
- 12:59pressed down, shaken together, and running over
- 13:01will be poured into your lap. For with the measure
- 13:05you use, it will be measured to you. Now, we
- 13:07often use that at offering time. But can I say
- 13:10to you today, the context for this verse is not
- 13:14giving. He does talk about giving in this whole
- 13:17speech. But within the verses that we find this,
- 13:22he's actually talking about judging one another.
- 13:28So you are a judgmental, critical person toward
- 13:32other people. Guess what? With whatever measure
- 13:34you judge, you will be judged. It's a pretty
- 13:38serious thing. And so the context for that is
- 13:44our relationships with one another. The grace,
- 13:48if you extend grace to one another, guess what?
- 13:53You will receive an abundance. Grace, mercy.
- 13:58If you're merciful instead of judgmental, you
- 14:01will receive mercy. Now, I do believe that this
- 14:06is a truth, although he's using this in regards
- 14:09to judgment. I believe it to be a foundational
- 14:14truth with anything. If it's your giving, wonderful.
- 14:18If it's your time, wonderful. If it's how open
- 14:23you are with people and giving just of yourself.
- 14:27It will be returned to you. The point of this
- 14:31verse isn't to get stuck in the weeds of all
- 14:35of that. The point of the verse is generosity.
- 14:40There should be an expectation that when I give
- 14:45out, I don't have to worry about it. It will
- 14:48come back in greater measure. And so what we
- 14:54expect. When you gave of your offering today,
- 14:58what is your expectation for your budget in June?
- 15:04Is it that he will throw open the storehouses
- 15:07of heaven and pour out upon you? Or is it, man,
- 15:12this is going to be a tight month. And even as
- 15:15you're putting your offering in, you're declaring,
- 15:17man, this is going to be a tight month. You've
- 15:21just declared your expectation. And I really
- 15:25believe that Holy Spirit is saying, come on,
- 15:28raise your expectation. There's so much that
- 15:35he wants to do in and through us. And it's not
- 15:39that God is the limit. Our expectation is the
- 15:43limit. Thomas understood this. And unfortunately,
- 15:48he will forever be riddled with the name Doubting
- 15:51Thomas, the poor guy. He's probably more like
- 15:56all of us than any of the disciples. But in John
- 16:01chapter 20, he said, because remember, Jesus
- 16:06had appeared to the disciples, but Thomas wasn't
- 16:09there. So Thomas got the report, Jesus is alive.
- 16:13And what is Thomas' initial response? It wasn't,
- 16:17yes, I'm so excited to hear this news. I can't
- 16:21wait to see Jesus. No. He had very low expectation.
- 16:27He said, unless I see the nail marks in his hands
- 16:33and put my finger where the nails were and put
- 16:37my hand in his side, I will not believe. He had
- 16:44low expectation. And I wonder how often. I'll
- 16:50raise my expectation when I see this, this, and
- 16:53this. Here's what happened. For a week, Thomas
- 17:02sat in that disbelief. Jesus did not immediately
- 17:08come to Thomas and alleviate his doubts. A week
- 17:12later, they're gathered, and suddenly Jesus is
- 17:16in their midst. And immediately he says to Thomas,
- 17:21put your finger here. See my hands? Reach out
- 17:27your hand and put it in my side. Stop doubting
- 17:32and believe is what Jesus said. Stop doubting
- 17:38and believe. That whole week, what Jesus wanted
- 17:45was for Thomas. to believe. But Thomas didn't
- 17:51believe. And immediately Thomas says, my Lord
- 17:56and my God. And then Jesus said, because you
- 18:02have seen me, you believed. But blessed are those
- 18:07who have not seen yet believe. Have not seen
- 18:14yet believe. He's not looking for people that
- 18:23are waiting to see the evidence that requires
- 18:26no faith. He said in John chapter 14 that we
- 18:33just read, you may ask me for anything in my
- 18:38name. I will do it. He does not qualify that.
- 18:45Well, if it's in my will, I'll do it. He doesn't
- 18:47qualify it at all. He just says, in his name,
- 18:51if you'll do it in his name, that was the only
- 18:53qualification, he will do it. If we go over a
- 19:01chapter, so when I read verses like that, because
- 19:05that is an extreme statement in my mind, ask
- 19:08anything and I'll do it. I don't just read that
- 19:12verse. I'm like, I need to know what's going
- 19:14on around this verse. And so immediately following
- 19:20this in the next chapter, John chapter 15, we
- 19:25have the passage that talks about abiding in
- 19:29Christ. Living out life in his presence. And
- 19:37he says in John chapter... verse 7, he says the
- 19:44exact same thing again. He says, if you remain
- 19:48in me and my words remain in you, ask me whatever
- 19:56you wish and it will be done for you. Ask me
- 20:02whatever you wish and it will be done for you.
- 20:06This is to my Father's glory that you bear much
- 20:09fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
- 20:16There is an outward evidence of being his disciple.
- 20:20And it's not just that we're growing in his character,
- 20:23it's doing what he did. If you were a rabbi and
- 20:28you had followers, they were to be doing what
- 20:32the rabbi did. Jesus, if he is our rabbi, we
- 20:38are to be doing what he did. Ask whatever you
- 20:42wish. Now let's think about this for a few moments.
- 20:49If you remain in me, because I'm like, how can
- 20:52Jesus ask this? How can he say this? Well, he
- 20:55says, if you remain in me. And if you think about
- 21:00that word remain, it is. Obviously, to remain
- 21:06is to stay, right? To be. But it also has a word
- 21:11in there which means endure. Now, endure has
- 21:15a couple of meanings, and endure can mean just
- 21:18to be in something, to stay in something for
- 21:21a length of time. And that is true. We don't
- 21:26leave his presence on Sunday morning. We endure
- 21:29day by day by day by day. However, If you've
- 21:34endured anything, if you've spent a length of
- 21:37time, I have endured almost 33 years of marriage.
- 21:43Now, see, you're immediately thinking of a negative
- 21:45connotation when I say that. But the truth is,
- 21:49is that the first meaning just means I have remained
- 21:52in my marriage for 33 years. It's a time signifier.
- 21:59However, anybody that's been in a marriage any
- 22:01length of time knows that in order to remain
- 22:05and to have that passage of time means you have
- 22:08had to endure ups and downs. We've had really
- 22:12great times in marriage, and we've walked through
- 22:14very difficult times and have endured together
- 22:18in those difficult times. And so when we talk
- 22:22about remaining in Christ, And this is what happens
- 22:26so often. Well, this way I can't just give Jesus
- 22:29a try. The first minute you have to endure hardship,
- 22:33you're out the door trying something else. To
- 22:37remain and endure in Christ means we withstand
- 22:42the ups and the downs, right? That means there's
- 22:46going to be seasons, winter seasons, where it
- 22:50does not appear like you are becoming like Christ
- 22:53or doing anything that he did. It's a hard season.
- 22:59And there are seasons we just endure. We keep
- 23:01doing what we know to do. like Pastor Ben was
- 23:04talking about. We keep praying. We keep reading.
- 23:07We keep showing up at church. We keep doing those
- 23:10things because we are remaining in Christ. So
- 23:13how can Jesus say, whatever you wish, it will
- 23:18be done for you? I think he can truly say that
- 23:24because he truly believes that if we are remaining
- 23:27and enduring with Jesus, whatever I wish, is
- 23:33whatever he would wish. Right? Suddenly, your
- 23:39desires become the desires of Christ. Suddenly,
- 23:44what you want answered is what will bring glory
- 23:47to the Father and to the Son. And I think it's
- 23:54interesting he says, whatever you wish. All that
- 23:56means is whatever you desire, whatever you want.
- 24:00And it will be done for you. I'm like, Lord,
- 24:03I want my son, right? I want health, right? Whatever
- 24:10I wish, Lord. Because I want you to have glory
- 24:14and I want to do the things that you've called
- 24:16me to do. And so whatever, here's what I want,
- 24:20Lord. Here's what I desire. And I'm coming with
- 24:24boldness because you said it will be done for
- 24:28you. I think that maybe we ought to increase
- 24:32the audaciousness of our prayers if this is what
- 24:39Jesus said he would do. I think that if Jesus
- 24:43had said, ask whatever you wish and it will be
- 24:46done for you, and you're remaining, you're not
- 24:49trying to do it in yourself and in your flesh,
- 24:53but you're remaining in Jesus. I think we ought
- 24:57to be asking for more. I bet he's up there just
- 25:00saying, come on, son. Come on, daughter. I got
- 25:05more I want to do. 2 ,085 unengaged people groups.
- 25:11And how many followers of Christ living in the
- 25:14United States? Surely we've got 2 ,085 missionaries
- 25:19we can raise up. And we're not the only denomination.
- 25:22And we're not the only country sending missionaries.
- 25:26Surely in all of our churches across the globe,
- 25:31we can raise up 2 ,085 missionaries to go to
- 25:36an unengaged people group. Can we ask for a little
- 25:39more than what we've been asking? Here's where
- 25:45we get stuck. And we're spending the other two
- 25:47points won't go this slow. But here's where we
- 25:50get stuck. We get stuck in the gap. How many
- 25:54of you know that in the London underground, when
- 25:59you are stepping out, when the doors open and
- 26:02you step out, what is the recording that plays?
- 26:06Mind the gap. Have you heard that phrase? That's
- 26:09where it comes from. Because between the vehicle
- 26:13and the platform, there's a gap. And so there's
- 26:17a recording that will say, mind the gap. And
- 26:20this is where we get that phrase. And so what
- 26:24it means is just to be careful and pay attention,
- 26:28right? Because we're not always paying attention
- 26:30to what we're doing. Pay attention to this difference
- 26:35in space, this gap. There is a difference here,
- 26:41and we need to mind it so we don't trip up. In
- 26:44fact, I did a wedding yesterday. out of town
- 26:47in a barn in the country. And so the barn was
- 26:52kind of up a hill, so they had a ramp they had
- 26:54built that met then the entrance to the barn.
- 27:00And so there was about a four -inch gap where
- 27:04the barn met that ramp. And so, you know, it
- 27:09had been there all through rehearsal. That gap
- 27:12had been there, the wedding party coming in.
- 27:14And all of a sudden, as we're all standing around,
- 27:17a couple of the groomsmen are pulling these boards
- 27:20out from the back wall. And they're sticking
- 27:23them in the gap. And you should have heard everybody.
- 27:28Oh, we were all enlightened because they had
- 27:33filled the gap in. And so up until now, we've
- 27:39been tolerating this gap. Those with heels probably
- 27:43despising that gap. And all along there have
- 27:47been provision for the gap. Listen, the gap spiritually.
- 27:55It can trip us up if we're not mindful of the
- 27:57gap. And the gap, what it really means is to
- 28:01be aware of the difference between two things.
- 28:05And so what we have in our expectation that isn't
- 28:10that difference is between our expectation and
- 28:16the reality we're currently living in. And sometimes
- 28:19there's a gap. We know what Jesus has promised
- 28:24and called us to, and we know the reality of
- 28:27what we're walking in. Can I say to you today,
- 28:31mind the gap. The gap can trip you up if you're
- 28:35not mindful of it. How you respond in the gap
- 28:40will matter. And after 40, how old am I? 41 years
- 28:47of being a Christ follower, What I've learned
- 28:51is that in these spaces, I have a choice to either
- 28:55be despising of it, just trying to endure it,
- 29:02just wanting out of it. Now what I've learned
- 29:08is to make the most of the gap. What I've learned
- 29:13is I feel God calling me to do this. Okay, I'm
- 29:16going to, in the space of the gap between the
- 29:21expectation of what he's calling me to and where
- 29:23I'm at, I am going to align my life to my reality?
- 29:29No. I'm going to align my life to the expectation.
- 29:33I'm going to ask God to teach me how to do that
- 29:38which is expected. I'm going to research areas.
- 29:45that I feel him calling me to. I'm going to resist
- 29:50the devil who would come in and say, oh, see,
- 29:53here's your reality. He didn't really say that
- 29:56to you. No, in the gap, I'm going to resist him
- 29:59and say, no, flee. In the gap, I'm going to fan
- 30:05my flame of faith. In the gap, I'm going to give
- 30:09myself to prayer and to asking. How we mind the
- 30:14gap is really important. And it will either keep
- 30:18your expectation up, but if you don't mind it,
- 30:22suddenly, because it's like your body, right?
- 30:26Your body quickly begins to just... And one week
- 30:33of not exercising, suddenly it's... It's the
- 30:39same way spiritually, if we don't mind the gap.
- 30:44The second area that I feel him calling us to
- 30:48is the area of imagination. And I've talked about
- 30:55this before. And we even talked about Ephesians
- 30:59chapter 3 before. But as I was praying through
- 31:03this, I felt the Holy Spirit speak something
- 31:06a little different in regards to Ephesians chapter
- 31:093, verse 20. And in the NIV, It says this, now
- 31:15to him who is able to do immeasurably more than
- 31:19all we ask or imagine, according to his power
- 31:22that is at work within us. And I've often said,
- 31:26Lord, I'd just be thrilled if you would do what
- 31:28I asked or imagined. Don't even have to go beyond,
- 31:31and I would be thrilled. I like how the New King
- 31:36James Version phrases this, though. It says,
- 31:40now to him who is able to do exceedingly, abundantly
- 31:46above all that we ask or think. I found this
- 31:53phrase interesting, abundantly above. The way
- 32:00that word above is, it means beyond. It means
- 32:04superior to. It means more than. And so often
- 32:13when we read Ephesians 3 .20, we're just thinking
- 32:15God is going to do numerically maybe more than
- 32:19what I'm asking or imagining. He's going to increase
- 32:22it more than that. As I was reading this, I felt
- 32:27Holy Spirit say is the beyond that I want to
- 32:32do is superior. To what you're asking for. Think
- 32:44of it this way. Isaiah 55 says. We know this.
- 32:48My thoughts are not your thoughts. Right? My
- 32:51ways are not your ways. As the heavens are higher
- 32:56than the earth. My ways are higher than your
- 32:58ways. And my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
- 33:03And so. What I. think we often think is what
- 33:08I'm asking or imagining, we understand in terms
- 33:12of our own thinking, but we cannot comprehend
- 33:15what God is actually wanting to do. It is beyond
- 33:19us. And I believe that is the more than that
- 33:24he wants. An example of this would be the Jewish
- 33:27people, right? On Palm Sunday, oh, we're all
- 33:30excited. The king is entering Jerusalem on a
- 33:34donkey, no less. That means he's coming to take
- 33:37up kingship. He's coming to take up his throne.
- 33:41And immediately they're rejoicing and excited.
- 33:44Why? Was it because Jesus was coming? No. It
- 33:48was because finally somebody is going to come
- 33:51and get rid of this Roman rule and set up a new
- 33:55kingdom. And Jesus is going to be the head of
- 33:59it. See, they've been asking for it. They've
- 34:03been imagining what it looked like. And God did
- 34:08it above and beyond, but it did not look like
- 34:13what they were envisioning. And even later, after
- 34:18he had died and resurrected, they're asking Jesus
- 34:23the question, okay, Jesus, now are you going
- 34:25to do it? Now are you going to set up your kingdom?
- 34:29Again, they're still thinking. They're still
- 34:30asking and imagining based upon earthly kingdoms.
- 34:36All along, Jesus, they were thinking outward
- 34:39kingdom, and Jesus, what was he thinking? Inward.
- 34:44There's a kingdom of God that they were not able
- 34:47to perceive. Their ways were not God's ways,
- 34:51and their thoughts were not God's thoughts. And
- 34:54there are things that God has promised to you
- 34:57and you have perceived them in your own understanding.
- 35:01And that above and beyond that God wants to do
- 35:04is because it's beyond what you can think or
- 35:07imagine. And I believe that God wants us, I think
- 35:12he wants us to ask and imagine because it keeps
- 35:16us believing. But we need to be open in that
- 35:19to saying, Come and make it happen the way God
- 35:23you know to make it happen. The way you believe
- 35:27it should look like. And so he's given you a
- 35:30promise in life. Maybe it's you've been perceiving
- 35:36it and believing for it. And God's saying, your
- 35:38way is not my ways. Your thoughts aren't my thoughts.
- 35:44You're not perceiving it the way I'm perceiving
- 35:47it. And he wants to restore that. And then the
- 35:51third area is the area of expansion. He said,
- 35:59whoever believes in me will do the works I have
- 36:02been doing and do greater things. In 2 Corinthians
- 36:079, verse 8, it says, God is able to bless you
- 36:15abundantly so that in all things, At all times,
- 36:21having all that you need, you will abound in
- 36:27every good work. And so Jesus said, you're going
- 36:33to do the works that I have done, but you're
- 36:35going to do it greater. And here we see in Corinthians
- 36:39that God is the one that supplies, that having
- 36:45all things at all times, everything we need.
- 36:48we will abound in those good works. As I was
- 36:55praying through this one, I couldn't help but
- 36:58be drawn back to Jabez. And we had to be careful
- 37:03because there was the whole season of the prayer
- 37:05of Jabez, and sometimes we quit seeing things
- 37:08then. And the prayer of Jabez is interesting
- 37:12in 1 Chronicles 4. It's just a lineage being
- 37:17laid out. This is why even in the lineages, we
- 37:20keep reading through all those names, we come
- 37:24to some treasure points. And this is one of them.
- 37:28This is now Jabez was more honorable than his
- 37:32brothers. And his mother called his name Jabez,
- 37:37saying, because I bore him in pain. And Jabez
- 37:43called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh, that
- 37:46you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory,
- 37:50that your hand would be with me, and that you
- 37:54would keep me from evil, that I may not cause
- 37:58pain. So God granted him what he requested. This
- 38:05is all we see here. Now, we do know there is
- 38:08another city named Jabez. that was probably named
- 38:11after him. Based on a lot of our ancient Jewish
- 38:15writings and storytelling, we do learn a few
- 38:18things that Jabez was a learned doctorate of
- 38:22the law, and he probably had started a school
- 38:25of scribes. He became so well known that scribes
- 38:29were coming to Jabez, and he began to train and
- 38:33establish a school. He would be considered a
- 38:36rabbi in that. And so he truly had a place of
- 38:43influence. And I find it so significant because
- 38:47Jabez was born with a name that defined him as
- 38:53painful. And I'm imagining this mom, because
- 38:59as an adult, it obviously had been something
- 39:02that truly had identified him. Because what is
- 39:06his prayer? That I may not cause pain. There
- 39:10was something in him that said, I don't want
- 39:13to be a causer of pain. I have been a causer
- 39:16of pain. I'm imagining that mom as he's a little
- 39:20kid getting in trouble being like, Jabez, I brought
- 39:26you into this world and you caused me a lot of
- 39:30pain. You better whip it up into shape. I just
- 39:33imagine this mom saying things like that to him.
- 39:37That he would become an adult with such an awareness
- 39:40of how he touched people's lives. That he was
- 39:45so worried about causing pain that it became
- 39:49his prayer. And this man that had been a causer
- 39:56of pain prayed a prayer of audacity. He prayed
- 40:03a prayer of, Lord, bless me. Lord, enlarge my
- 40:07territory. And I don't know, I think we think
- 40:10it's so holy to not ask for things of influence.
- 40:17You know, I read, I'm reading a book right now,
- 40:19and they read a statistic of denominations. And
- 40:24of all, you know, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Baptist,
- 40:27Pentecostal. In the economic sense, in the economic...
- 40:34facts that they collected. The wealthiest economic
- 40:39status were those like the Presbyterians, the
- 40:43Lutherans, the bottom 10 % Baptists and Pentecostals.
- 40:49And I believe it's because we think it's spiritual.
- 40:53We think it's unspiritual to ask, Lord, bless
- 40:58me, enlarge my territory. And can I say that
- 41:02is just, I think, I think that the enemy has
- 41:06used that to keep us in a lower economic situation
- 41:11because it takes resources to expand the gospel.
- 41:17And I think we should resist that kind of, I
- 41:20think that the devil whispers that to keep us
- 41:24in places of bondage. I'm like, I don't know.
- 41:27I'd rather have us all be at that top economically
- 41:31with hearts to enlarge our territory that the
- 41:35Father would receive the glory of every tribe,
- 41:38every tongue, and every nation. Missionaries
- 41:42can't just, you know, fly for free. And so I
- 41:48think we should change that statistic and be
- 41:51like Jabez, unafraid to pray bold prayers. God,
- 41:55would you bless me? Would you enlarge my territory?
- 41:59Not out of a prosperity doctrine, but out of
- 42:03a desire that the Father would be glorified in
- 42:06the earth. And we would be a part of sending
- 42:09that forward. Enlarge my territory. And so this
- 42:18morning, this morning the team is going to come
- 42:24and in these three areas, in the area of your
- 42:31expectation, of your imagination, of your expansion,
- 42:36I want us to be honest before the Lord. of where
- 42:46we have been at in that. Maybe we have not minded
- 42:49our expectation well. We've not been a good steward
- 42:54of the gap. And he's kept us in the gap so long
- 42:58because he's just waiting for us to steward it
- 43:01well, to maybe learn something, to grow deeper
- 43:05roots in those places. Maybe he's calling for
- 43:13you to maybe get a little bolder in your prayers
- 43:16for your family. To expand your expectation for
- 43:22the one that feels like might never come to Christ.
- 43:27I think that can be the most radical testimony
- 43:30of what God does in your family. And I will believe
- 43:34for no less. Some of you, God wants to expand
- 43:44you. In Jabez's day, that was marked by territory
- 43:49and herds. But listen, he wants you to expand
- 43:54your territory in your workplace, in your family.
- 44:00He wants to expand your influence in your neighborhood.
- 44:05Can we just pray that, God, expand my territory.
- 44:09I want to see the gospel of Jesus Christ flow
- 44:13out of me. We just came off of Pentecost Sunday
- 44:18last week. And at the end, which we grabbed these,
- 44:26poor Darren had so much happening last week that
- 44:30he didn't really get to this. But last week and
- 44:35this morning, you should have received this four
- 44:38more card. We are a Pentecostal people that believes
- 44:46that the Holy Spirit has been given that we would
- 44:48have power to be a witness in Jerusalem, in Judea,
- 44:55in Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the earth.
- 45:00And I am believing for the uttermost parts of
- 45:02the earth. But there is a pathway to that and
- 45:06it is through Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria.
- 45:10We are so blessed. We have a couple coming to
- 45:13our Petersburg campus and originally from Illinois,
- 45:17but spent 40 years in Tennessee and moved back
- 45:22to Illinois so that she could pray for Illinois.
- 45:27I was like, yeah, God. All these people moving
- 45:31to Tennessee. When Illinois needs Jesus. We have
- 45:37our Jerusalems. You have a Jerusalem that I don't
- 45:40reach. You need to change your expectation for
- 45:47your Jerusalem. You need to begin to imagine
- 45:51and believe over your Jerusalem. You need to
- 45:55pray for expansion in your Jerusalem. Nobody
- 46:03else is going to reach it. And we need to pray
- 46:07that for our region, for our state, for our nation,
- 46:11and to the ends of the earth. To believe in expectation,
- 46:20to begin to imagine what could happen, to believe
- 46:24for expansion. And so if you received this card,
- 46:31I want you, you're going to have this card for
- 46:33a year. And I want you to put four people on
- 46:37this card that you are going to have expectation
- 46:40for, that you're going to imagine over, and that
- 46:44you're going to believe for expansion into their
- 46:47lives of the gospel. And then you're going to
- 46:52tear it off and turn in the bottom because we
- 46:54want to pray over your names as a church. And
- 46:59so if you took one home last week, I'm going
- 47:02to ask that you would fill that out this week
- 47:04and bring it back next week so we can pray over
- 47:08your people. If you just got one today, you can
- 47:12do that this morning and you can just turn this
- 47:16into the offering box in the back. And we have
- 47:21a fried chicken with friends that's coming here
- 47:23in a couple of weeks. And I want you to begin
- 47:26to just pray. Jesus called us to do the things
- 47:33that he did. And I don't want to be a Pentecostal
- 47:39church in here experiencing wonderful things
- 47:42and having goosebumps and Holy Ghost parties,
- 47:45which I love. In fact, I'm driving over to Radiant
- 47:48tonight. They're having a worship night, revival
- 47:51night. So I'm going to go hang out and have myself
- 47:55a little revival night. I believe in that. It's
- 47:58our locker room where you get encouraged and
- 48:01filled up ready to leave. But the Holy Ghost
- 48:06was given so that you would leave and go do what
- 48:11Jesus did. Jesus left this earth so that you
- 48:16could receive the power of the Holy Spirit and
- 48:19go do what he did. And go do it in a greater
- 48:24way than what he did. And I feel great heaviness
- 48:28that we, it's not a, well, that's great for those
- 48:35that are evangelists. There is a heavy responsibility
- 48:38I feel in this. There is a cost to it in the
- 48:43life of Christ. And we've been put on this earth
- 48:47for such a time. You're here for such a time
- 48:52on this earth. to do what Jesus did and beyond.
- 48:59Amen? That should be an amen. So let it be. So
- 49:06let it be. And so this morning I'm going to ask
- 49:09if you will stand. I love testimonies of what
- 49:16Holy Spirit does in here, but I love it more
- 49:18when you guys come and say, here's what happened
- 49:21this week. at school, at work. And I hear how
- 49:27Holy Spirit has used you to flow in the gifts,
- 49:30used you to pray for somebody and they've been
- 49:33healed. My favorite, I love Tabitha back there.
- 49:37She's online for her work. She's constantly ministering
- 49:42to the people she talks with online, on the phone,
- 49:46at her workplace. I love her testimonies. What
- 49:50is she doing? She's believing. She's believing
- 49:53that she can do what Jesus did and do even greater
- 49:57works than that in the lives of those people.
- 50:01And so this morning, Jesus, in just a quietness,
- 50:08in just a sincerity of heart, Lord, we're asking
- 50:21As we abide in Christ, as we abide in you, as
- 50:28we seek to live and dwell and move and have our
- 50:33being in you, that the good works that you have
- 50:39established for us to do would come into fruition.
- 50:43God, we're saying we're not going to settle any
- 50:46longer for just becoming like you, Christ. No,
- 50:52we're not settling any longer. But we're saying,
- 50:56Christ, we want to do the things that you did.
- 51:00The hungry and the thirsty in our lives. That
- 51:06we would be pitchers of living water being poured
- 51:11out. That we would be bread distributors giving
- 51:15of the living bread of Christ. we're asking not
- 51:22that we would be a Pentecostal people in these
- 51:24four walls, but we're asking that we would be
- 51:27a Pentecostal people outside these walls. We're
- 51:31asking that where our feet step, that we would
- 51:34take that ground, that wherever we are walking
- 51:39and talking and being, that we would evidence
- 51:42the character of Christ and do the things of
- 51:46Christ. And Lord, we in this moment, as one body
- 51:50we just take a moment to say God we're sorry
- 51:54for having such low standards of being Christ
- 51:58followers forgive us for our low standards our
- 52:05low expectations and teach us Jesus what it is
- 52:11to do the things that you did teach us Jesus
- 52:16how to lay hands and to pray over people. Teach
- 52:19us, Jesus, how to release people from the bondage
- 52:24of sin through the gospel. Teach us how to hear
- 52:28when the Holy Spirit quickens us. Teach us, Jesus,
- 52:32to do the things that you did in our places of
- 52:37businesses. Jesus, you excel in the hardest places.
- 52:48You excel in the most sin -bound places. Your
- 52:53power is greater than any dark place. There's
- 52:59just no place that's too big for you, Jesus.
- 53:02So we repent for our low standards. And we raise
- 53:08our expectations to all that you would have us
- 53:14Do and be. Jesus.
