Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:05Welcome to The Brief.
- 0:06It's Thursday, the 23rd of March, 2023.
- 0:09And for the first time ever on Rusty's Garage, the supercars champion and Bathurst winner is going to join us.
- 0:17Hi, everybody.
- 0:18Greg Rust with you.
- 0:19Little backstory before we get going.
- 0:21Shane Van Gisbergen and I actually had a conversation.
- 0:24I reckon it was Pukakoe prior to the pandemic about coming on one day as a guest for one of our regular long-form chats.
- 0:32You can still get those, incidentally.
- 0:33We are releasing those fortnightly now.
- 0:36Damon Hill, the 1996 F1 world champion, drops in the days ahead.
- 0:41So keep an eye out for that.
- 0:42SVG said to me in that conversation at Pukki that a full podcast chat is something
- 0:47Something that he'd kind of prefer for later in life, when he's ticked the boxes and driven all the things that he wants to in his career.
- 0:54And I respected that.
- 0:56I'd never asked again.
- 0:57With the addition of our new short cast that focuses on things happening right now in the world of motorsport, I thought we'd try and get him on again.
- 1:07The intent was to do that at some point during the season.
- 1:09We actually asked the team prior to Newcastle if he would be up for it and that we would discuss all sorts of things, Richie Stanaway, for example, and more.
- 1:18I want to honour that promise.
- 1:20So this is going to be a rounded conversation, not just turn into something that focuses on the negatives of round one.
- 1:26We will get to those headlines in part and see how he feels now that some time has passed.
- 1:33I can't stop the news cycle.
- 1:36My hope is that journos listening won't just rip a clickbait headline out of this and instead that we all listen to this with a sense of balance that you know that I am big on.
- 1:46For the record, if Mark Scaife came on, and he has been a great guest of ours once before, or if Supercar's CEO Shane Howard joined us, for example, I would...
- 1:55approach this chat in a similar way where we covered all sorts of topics and the issue or issues to Zua as well.
- 2:02And in a manner where all parties felt comfortable to speak with a sense of fairness.
- 2:08I am not into current affairs show style hatchet jobs.
- 2:13So I hope you enjoy it.
- 2:14Enjoy it in full as it's intended.
- 2:17And maybe you'll walk away, just maybe, with a different take on Shane and understand how this champion of the sport ticks,
- 2:25and appreciate that.
- 2:27We will get that longer chat with him one day.
- 2:32Shane, welcome mate, how are you?
- 2:34Yeah, I'm going good, how's yourself?
- 2:36Fantastic.
- 2:36Hey, you and Max Verstappen have done some sim racing together, you guys get on pretty well.
- 2:41Will you get to catch up at the GP and maybe spend a little bit of time in the Red Bull F1 garage?
- 2:46Yeah, we had a race last night and he smoked me, but yeah, we'll try and catch up.
- 2:52Try and catch up during the week.
- 2:54I think he's been pretty sick, actually.
- 2:56He struggled through last week.
- 2:59So, yeah, hopefully he's better and look forward to seeing how he goes this week.
- 3:03What were you racing?
- 3:04Where were you?
- 3:05Come on.
- 3:06Oh, there's a race on this weekend.
- 3:09Sebring, 12 hours.
- 3:11So yeah, we were playing around in a Ferrari GT3.
- 3:14Mega.
- 3:15All right.
- 3:15When you get those kind of opportunities to go to the F1 garage, for example, do you get the chance to like really sink your racer teeth into things?
- 3:25I know you love all that stuff, right?
- 3:27Is it more of an appearance thing or do you get to see some cool stuff behind the scenes that you really enjoy?
- 3:31Yeah.
- 3:31No, seeing behind the garage and behind the walls even, like seeing all the tech that goes on, like all the stuff they do with the floors, they have all the floors back there and all the sensors in the cars.
- 3:43Like it's unbelievable the technical side of things.
- 3:46Like it's another level of...
- 3:48what those guys do.
- 3:49It's really, really cool.
- 3:50And then, yeah, just seeing the cars up close, all the stuff you don't see on TV, the little intricate details on the wings, the aero and all those little details you can't quite pick out.
- 4:00It's really cool to see.
- 4:02And then, you know, when you go down the back of pit lane,
- 4:06It's like, I guess, any racing you see the difference in the quality of teams.
- 4:10You know, they have all their front wings out on show and the top teams don't.
- 4:14You know, it's pretty cool to see the difference.
- 4:17Do you like those new spec or newer generation cars in Formula 1 or are you kind of more of a fan of the old school V10s and so on?
- 4:26Yeah, definitely.
- 4:27The engines were a backward step in the last couple of years.
- 4:312014, I think they came in, but...
- 4:33I think that this generation of cars definitely made the racing a bit better, although there is still the top two or three teams well ahead of everyone.
- 4:42I, yeah, I do think,
- 4:45It is a lot better than the early 2000s, you know, when people were dominating and winning by a lot.
- 4:49I still think it's reasonably competitive, although Max seems to be a step above this year.
- 4:55Yeah, that car is quick and he's in good form too.
- 4:58I hope he's right from a health point of view.
- 5:00Hey, does he pick your brains about supercars, the players, the cars and so on?
- 5:05Yeah, we were asking, he was asking a lot of questions about Newcastle and how it went and, you know, what the new car's like and stuff like that.
- 5:11So, it's pretty cool.
- 5:13Pretty cool how he watches it all and he just loves all the racing.
- 5:18Albert Park's really different to Newcastle.
- 5:19to Newcastle, which, you know, they modified the Albert Park layout significantly for last year's race.
- 5:25Do you like that new layout?
- 5:27And what sort of things should fans kind of keep an eye out for with the supercars races?
- 5:32Are we going to expect a resumption of that battle with Chassis Mostert, for example?
- 5:35Yeah.
- 5:36Yeah, it's another unknown.
- 5:38Like, it's a completely different track, as you say.
- 5:41We had a lot of tyre drummers there last year on the soft tyre, and this year we're on the super soft.
- 5:47So it's got a brand new surface there and a lot of high-speed corners, and it really ate the tyres, and they were literally falling apart after three, four, five laps.
- 5:56So...
- 5:57This year will be interesting to see if that still happens with this new car and not as much downforce.
- 6:03But yeah, we're on the super soft and the hard tyre.
- 6:06It's the only time of year we race on the hard tyre.
- 6:09So the speed difference between the two is going to be huge.
- 6:12So it might make for good racing, we'll see.
- 6:15Or it might be like last year where...
- 6:17Everyone runs the soft until it falls apart and then puts the hard tyre on.
- 6:21So we'll see.
- 6:22Cool.
- 6:22How busy are those Gen 3 cars?
- 6:24The onboard looked hectic at times at round one.
- 6:27Is that kind of Newcastle-centric or will Melbourne be a bit similar?
- 6:31I don't know what camera you were watching.
- 6:36They don't feel like it.
- 6:37You know, you don't really have the bias.
- 6:38You can adjust quickly and no roll bars.
- 6:41So you're not really adjusting on the fly.
- 6:43What you got is what you got.
- 6:44So you're sort of just driving around really where last year's car, you'd really hustle it.
- 6:49And if it wasn't to your liking on some corners, you could tune it.
- 6:52So...
- 6:54it's a bit different.
- 6:55It's really an engineer's car, this one.
- 6:57It's quite a bit less of a driver's car because they really have to nail the setup.
- 7:02They really have to be onto it.
- 7:04And then you just drive to what grip you have and what balance you have.
- 7:07It's very hard to manipulate the car.
- 7:09So I'm finding off track.
- 7:12I have to be so much better and work so much closer with my engineer to make sure we get things right.
- 7:17And I'm just trying to be the...
- 7:19even though I am struggling to feel the car, trying to be as good as I can with my feedback because whatever car he gives me in the race is what I'm stuck with.
- 7:27Andrew Edwards has got some great history in the sport and you've talked recently about his input.
- 7:33Naturally, he was working with a pretty well-sorted, a good car last year.
- 7:36As you rightly point out, this is about building up all that info, that understanding with this new beast.
- 7:41How is all that going and are you kind of having late-night convos as you remember things and think about things and so on?
- 7:48Yeah, so I think last year was really good to get to know him in a car that he was just tuning and refining.
- 7:54It was a pretty awesome car to start with and well set up.
- 7:57But this year, you know, we're starting from scratch.
- 7:59So to already have that relationship I think is a huge advantage.
- 8:03So the timing was very good last year.
- 8:05But, yeah, like his –
- 8:07His prep pre-weekend and what he tells me or what info he gives me before we get on track.
- 8:13Like it's really stepped up for me.
- 8:16Like I know, you know, pretty much the plan we're going to take and what we're going to tune and how we're going to try and approach things.
- 8:23with tires and, you know, he keeps bugging me about what tires we're going to run next week and stuff.
- 8:28And I don't really know, but yeah, like he's been really good for me.
- 8:32And it's just part of that experience.
- 8:34You know, you get to work with different people and they all have different ways of doing things.
- 8:39And I think coming from a small team like Ray Jones, he's been very resourceful with what he's had in the past.
- 8:47Not that they're a bad team.
- 8:48They have had some great
- 8:54you forget about the simple things sometimes, you know.
- 8:56So, yeah, some of those small details he's been really, really good at.
- 9:01Cool.
- 9:01Richie Stanaway looks like he's slotted in so well, Shane.
- 9:05How's he going?
- 9:06And how kind of pleased are you on a personal level to be a part of his kind of like second coming in supercars, if you will?
- 9:14Yeah.
- 9:14So, I said – someone asked me this the other day and –
- 9:18It's good and it's bad because we're putting in so much effort to Richie.
- 9:22Like there's two races this year.
- 9:25So the championship's huge.
- 9:26We really have to make sure he's prepared.
- 9:28But it's probably only going to be a one-year deal.
- 9:31If he does a good job, he's going to get a full-time drive, which he rightly deserves.
- 9:38So for us, we're putting in all this effort for these two races and we're probably going to lose them next year.
- 9:43Well, hopefully we lose them next year.
- 9:45I really want to see him...
- 9:47like the frame of mind he's in now and how much energy he has towards racing and how much he's enjoying it.
- 9:53I really want him to be back in full time and it seems like he does too.
- 9:58So, yeah, hopefully we have some fun and just go racing and enjoy it, you know, even though we don't.
- 10:05talk much it's uh it should be should be pretty good hopefully as we say do our talking on the track yeah cool i hope he gets that opportunity that you you talk about as well do you find that you both like similar things in the current will he get over back over to aussie fairly regular you know regularly during the year maybe the gp perhaps will we see him
- 10:24Yeah, so he's been to our test days, came to Eastern Creek and then Queensland Raceway, so that's great to get him sorted in that.
- 10:32I'm not sure if Boost is still trying to do wild cards.
- 10:35It would be really handy for him to do a proper race.
- 10:38I think it's just extra miles in these cars, but he is struggling a fair bit.
- 10:44with the electronic throttle and the single throttle body, they don't have a good response.
- 10:49So the left foot breakers are all struggling.
- 10:51I know Matt Payne's gone to right foot braking because the response is not very good in the cars.
- 10:57It's the same for everyone, Ford and the Chev.
- 10:59But, yeah, Richie's struggling with his timing and being able to brake confidently.
- 11:04And I think...
- 11:05I think most people have migrated to right foot.
- 11:08So, yeah, we're trying to make things better for him.
- 11:10And I know the category is trying to make the engines better as well.
- 11:14So, yeah, hopefully it improves for everyone and he can get more comfortable.
- 11:20We'll take a break here in Rusty's Garage.
- 11:22Stick around.
- 11:23We cover Newcastle and a whole lot more in just a few moments.
- 11:29Hey, been a couple of weeks to kind of process the events of Newcastle.
- 11:33How are you now, mate?
- 11:34And did you kind of did you escape at all for a little while?
- 11:37I know there is a new dog, for example.
- 11:40Yeah, we had the dog for a while, but yeah, it was a weird weekend with a lot of stuff coming out of it, and obviously it turned out being very cool for me afterwards.
- 11:53I've never had so much support from friends, family, and also colleagues, not just drivers and teams, but the media people as well.
- 12:04It's been amazing to...
- 12:05hear what they've had to say because even the media has gone through what we have with the car and what they're allowed to say about it and how they're allowed to approach things.
- 12:13So it's been really cool to have the support.
- 12:16And obviously, you know, I had some messages with you too.
- 12:18Like I definitely could have handled after the race stuff better.
- 12:25You know, like people like Chad and Jess, they're awesome for our sport.
- 12:29You know, they have the right...
- 12:30intentions, I guess, and right way of doing things.
- 12:33And, you know, when Jess asked me that question off the podium, like I didn't even listen to the question.
- 12:38Like I knew what I was going to say.
- 12:40And it probably wasn't the right thing.
- 12:42When I listened back to it, she asked the perfect question to ignore all the outside stuff and just talk about the racing.
- 12:48So anyway, I know I can be better, but yeah, I'm still pretty gutted about the way Scaife was with his comments.
- 12:56Like he's someone who we've worked, you know, given all the feedback with the team.
- 13:01the Gen 3 car and stuff.
- 13:03And, yeah, like, he knows what we're going on with and what we're struggling with with the car.
- 13:08And for him to say this stuff he did, like, it was pretty average by him, I thought.
- 13:14Like, you know, he knows what we're going through.
- 13:18He knows how we're struggling with the car.
- 13:20And, yeah, just pretending, like...
- 13:23Pretending like it's all roses and the car's perfect on the first race is not right.
- 13:27Like the car needs so much more development and time and fundamentally underneath the car's awesome.
- 13:34It just needs time to be right.
- 13:36So I don't see why there's no, I don't see why there's a problem with being outward about that and funnily.
- 13:43telling people the story about what we need to fix and what we need to make better um so yeah trying to hide and pretend everything's rosy to me was not right so yeah it was a bit average what he said after i thought you respect him i know that and he's done some great things in in the sport can you guys repair this is it is it fixable and will you sit down before albert park
- 14:04Yeah, I guess so.
- 14:05It'll be interesting to see how they approach it.
- 14:07I had some interesting calls afterwards from people above him, maybe.
- 14:12But yeah, I don't know.
- 14:16I just want to really focus on my driving.
- 14:18It'd be interesting to see what comes of it from their side.
- 14:21But yeah, I'm trying to ignore it and focus on Grand Prix.
- 14:24But yeah.
- 14:25Yeah, it was a weird time for a couple of days.
- 14:28I've never won a race and felt so down after a weekend or won both races actually on track.
- 14:36So, yeah, it was a weird, weird time and I felt pretty average on Monday.
- 14:40But then, you know, I wrote that thing, posted it and –
- 14:44Yeah, it turned around pretty quick after that once I explained my side.
- 14:48Well done.
- 14:50You're a champion, and I'm a huge believer, mate, that champions have powers for good right.
- 14:54You've alluded to it a little bit there just a moment ago.
- 14:57How would you kind of like to move forward here with the sport, with the greater executive, if you will, of the sport?
- 15:04Yeah.
- 15:05Yeah, it's a hard one.
- 15:07And maybe to be honest, I am battling with myself.
- 15:10You know, they asked last week to get some things together and what we should do to make the car better.
- 15:17And I basically just said, well, go to nine months ago and there's all the comments.
- 15:22Nothing has changed.
- 15:24Now they're sort of trying to change all these things.
- 15:26But on one hand, I want to help the series to get better.
- 15:29But on the other hand,
- 15:31I've got a championship now to race for, like this is the car we've got.
- 15:35Now I've been put 150 points in the hole.
- 15:39I'm conflicted because I just want to race now and I'm pretty fired up to be perfect in the next few weeks and get those points back.
- 15:47But on the other hand, I want to make the car better for everyone.
- 15:52All the drivers are struggling with the same things.
- 15:55We're all saying the same comments because we have the same car.
- 15:58But yeah, so it's a hard one.
- 16:01For me, I really just want to come out of Melbourne and drive and do my best.
- 16:09It's hard to be selfish and have everyone's best interests at heart at the same time.
- 16:13But you're a competitive human being and I can sense that in your driving, mate.
- 16:18Overnight, the team unfortunately lost the appeal over the race one disqualification for a little while.
- 16:24You were the first winner in this new era.
- 16:26What's the feeling like internally on the decision, if you can talk about it at all?
- 16:32Yeah, so I read the team statement and what Jamie sent to our team last night and they had to have a crack at it.
- 16:40And the way the statement read, they still feel like it was approved, like the conversation happened and maybe the paperwork wasn't done right.
- 16:49I'm not sure.
- 16:51for us, it's a shame we have to take it now, accept the decision.
- 16:56But still, that feeling of that first race win, having a 1-2 after all the months of hard work for the team and the guys, like seeing how much it meant to everyone,
- 17:07I still have that feeling like it was amazing to come out there and just kill everyone on the first race.
- 17:14And the Icebox didn't do that.
- 17:15That was two drivers done well, but also the team giving us such a good car, good reliability and good setup on the first race.
- 17:24And I think that's the thing to focus on.
- 17:27Got to, you know, forget about the points and keep pushing forward.
- 17:31Like it's a long year.
- 17:32We can make it back.
- 17:34Couple to finish, and I don't want this to all be negative.
- 17:37I want some other positives here too.
- 17:38You had a fantastic summer back home.
- 17:41You did some sprint car racing, won a race there too.
- 17:43I managed to spectate at a couple, which is awesome.
- 17:46Will you do perhaps a bit more of that, maybe some rallying during the year if time permits?
- 17:51Yeah, so I probably won't do Speedway again until the end of the year, but I love that.
- 17:56It was the team, United Truck Parts team, it was really, really cool to be part of.
- 18:02Just a good bunch of guys, Brian and Sean running it.
- 18:06And, yeah, we just turned up every week, had a good time.
- 18:10The results got better and better, but there was no pressure put on me.
- 18:13We just went racing for fun and, you know, having beers in the pits afterwards and stuff.
- 18:18It was a...
- 18:18just a really cool atmosphere.
- 18:20I really enjoyed it.
- 18:21Um, so yeah, I'd love to do more.
- 18:23Um, and then of course rally, I was hooked on that last year.
- 18:26I did, did three rallies in New Zealand.
- 18:28So I'm working hard to, to, to do this year's rally New Zealand series.
- 18:34I think there's three or four I can do and we're getting pretty close.
- 18:37So hopefully I have some, some good news for that and, um,
- 18:41Yeah, like I want to do some in Australia too, but nothing beats the New Zealand roads.
- 18:46They're just epic.
- 18:48Awesome, mate.
- 18:48Awesome.
- 18:49So watch this space.
- 18:50We'll watch this closely.
- 18:51Can we finish, Shane, with a comment on Legacy?
- 18:55Ironically, mate, everyone is talking about Newcastle.
- 18:57That's the crazy thing here.
- 18:58Many will argue that the...
- 19:00All the chat is good for the sport.
- 19:02I think as Russell Ingle has pointed out, not all champions work the room, mate.
- 19:06Not all of them work the media.
- 19:08They give back in other ways, right?
- 19:09And I've seen you do that.
- 19:12I've spent a bit of time with your family and seen the good people that they are.
- 19:16What kind of qualities do you hope listeners appreciate about you as a champion as we wrap this up and ways they'll remember you long-term, mate?
- 19:26Well, that's a tough one.
- 19:27Yeah.
- 19:28Yeah, I don't know.
- 19:29Like, I guess obviously you want to be remembered for your driving and racing.
- 19:36Like, when I drive, I try and do everything I can the best I can.
- 19:40But, yeah, I guess, you know, we obviously have a lot of,
- 19:47for and against in this sport.
- 19:49Like, you know, you support your Shevs or you support your Fords or Holdens as it used to be, and there's a lot of, I guess, polarizing people in the sport.
- 19:57You support one or you support don't.
- 19:58There's not many people who are in the middle in our sport, which is awesome.
- 20:02That creates rivalries.
- 20:04But I guess even for the people who don't support me, I guess hopefully they think I'm still...
- 20:12I still was or still am a good thing for the sport.
- 20:15And they appreciate me being there.
- 20:18I don't care if they cheer against me, you know, as long as they think it creates good racing and a good thing for the sport to have that healthy competition.
- 20:28And I know I push things to the edge sometimes, but I love to...
- 20:34I love to push my competitors as far as they can, but I want to be fair when I do it as well.
- 20:39Cool.
- 20:39I hope they appreciate you, Shane, for your conviction, your authenticity, for the diversity of your driving and the way that you go about it, mate, because as we've seen already with this brand-new car, you go hard, mate, and that is something the fans will be able to savour, win and enjoy this year.
- 20:57Good luck at Albert Park.
- 20:58Good luck for the rest of the season, and we wait, hopefully, for some news on...
- 21:02A few little other things around the edges that you might get to experience during the year.
- 21:06Thank you very much for coming on and for chatting to us.
- 21:09Cool.
- 21:09I appreciate you, mate.
- 21:10Cool shirt as well.
- 21:11Yeah.
- 21:12Thank you.
- 21:13Pickens, 200.
- 21:16SVG was in Queensland.
- 21:17I was at home for that recording.
- 21:19So although this is an audio medium, he was actually reacting to my Michael Pickens T-shirt.
- 21:24The Kiwi Speedway legend is coming on Rusty's Garage.
- 21:28We recorded that recently.
- 21:29It'll be released in the next month or so.
- 21:31So keep an eye out, an ear out for that.
- 21:33Coming up also, Aussie NASCAR crew chief, James Small.
- 21:37That's a ripper chat, not too far away.
- 21:39Quick thanks to Mitch McAvoy, the team's comms and partnership manager,
- 21:44for his help in teeing today's chat with Shane Van Gisbergen up.
- 21:47I love how Shane acknowledged Jess Yates and Chad Nalon from the Supercars coverage and how he can perhaps grow a bit as a champion.
- 21:56Respect, mate.
- 21:57And I genuinely hope he and Mark Scaife, I really hope they can work this out.
- 22:02I can appreciate how...
- 22:04any business would want its frontline people to show positivity around a new product.
- 22:09That's natural, right?
- 22:10But as a champion, Shane, just like Mark, has earned the right to a view.
- 22:14And I've said elsewhere that it's my personal belief that competitors in any sport should be always able to speak freely.
- 22:22Fans expect that.
- 22:24Now to a moment where I eat a little humble pie.
- 22:28Oscar Piastri proved me wrong when I said on radio last weekend that it might take a while before this McLaren improves, if at all.
- 22:36Yes, the Saudi Arabian race mightn't reflect it, but getting through to the final period of qualifying to Q3...
- 22:43was seriously impressive and was a glimpse, a reminder of the immense talent that this young racer has.
- 22:49His home event in Melbourne is just over a week away now.
- 22:53From all of us at Rusty's Garage, Oscar, we wish you well.
- 22:57And to finish, a shout out to those taking part in the Girls on Track event at Albert Park on the Thursday of race week.
- 23:03I think something like 600 applied, not all of them applied.
- 23:07could get through.
- 23:08Don't be disheartened if you missed out.
- 23:09The Motorsport Australia program is leading the way globally in this area and there will be lots of events throughout the year to keep an eye out for.
- 23:19To those lucky enough to get through, enjoy it.
- 23:21There's a tour of Alfa Romeo in there, for example, and a whole lot more.
- 23:24It's going to be a fantastic experience for you.
- 23:27You can find out more by going to the Motorsport Australia website.
- 23:31That is it for this edition of The Brief.
- 23:33We will catch you next time, everybody, for the next edition, in fact, of Rusty's Garage.
