- 0:00Speaker 1: It's Portland, late eighteen hundreds. The streets are muddy, the
- 0:04Speaker 1: rain is relentless, and the men are surprisingly flammable from
- 0:07Speaker 1: all the whiskey, sailors, laggers, drifters. They flood the bars
- 0:12Speaker 1: of old Town looking for a drink company and bad decisions,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and that's where the story takes a dark turn.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Are not.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Nailed it because I'm trying to set the mood serious?
- 0:29Speaker 4: Nailed it?
- 0:30Speaker 3: That's what we just helped you do.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you're welcome.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hi Caitlin, Hi Cassie. Oh Hi creepy people. Hello, if
- 0:44Speaker 3: you're new to a creepy corner of the world. This

- 0:49Speaker 3: chat about true crime, the paranormal and all things spooky
- 0:53Speaker 3: in the Pacific Northwest.
- 0:56Speaker 4: It's the P and W.
- 0:57Speaker 5: If you're nicety, and you are and we have confirmed
- 1:03Speaker 5: and that you indeed are.
- 1:05Speaker 3: We also have nasty friends else we do Shay and
- 1:13Speaker 3: Jody from Rainy Day Rabbit Holes.
- 1:16Speaker 4: You're nasty, I mean they have holes in the name.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Enough said, come on. So today's very special episode. We
- 1:27Speaker 3: uh stayed downtown. We did a little Shanghai Tunnel tour
- 1:32Speaker 3: with Shan Jody from Rainy Day rabbit Holes, as you know,
- 1:35Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember I just mentioned them.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So you're going to be listening to that in your
- 1:46Speaker 3: ear holes very soon, like right now, like right now.
- 1:51Speaker 3: Ish cut to.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So you've just emerged from the shadows, the smell of
- 2:00Speaker 1: damp brick in your nose, probably still brushing imaginary cobwebs
- 2:05Speaker 1: off your jacket, and you're thinking, did I just walk
- 2:08Speaker 1: through history or a movie set. Let's set the mood.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's Portland, late eighteen hundreds. The streets are muddy, the
- 2:16Speaker 1: rain is relentless, and the men are surprisingly flammable from
- 2:20Speaker 1: all the whiskey, sailors, laggers, drifters. They flood the bars
- 2:26Speaker 1: of old town looking for a drink company and bad decisions.
- 2:32Speaker 1: And that's where the story takes a dark turn.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Dun, dun, dun.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Aren nailed it because I'm trying to set the mood
- 2:45Speaker 1: serious and nailed it.
- 2:48Speaker 3: That's what we just helped you do.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you're welcome.
- 2:51Speaker 1: According to the legend, these men would wander into one
- 2:55Speaker 1: of the many saloons, brothels, or gambling halls that dotted
- 2:58Speaker 1: the area. They'd toss back a couple shots, chat up
- 3:02Speaker 1: the wrong stranger, and suddenly, poof, they're out cold. Next
- 3:07Speaker 1: thing they know, they're waking up on a ship halfway
- 3:10Speaker 1: to Shanghai with a wicket hangover and a new career
- 3:14Speaker 1: as a non voluntary deckhand. I'm sorry, cant oh, no,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I'm starting. Is that like where you have well, no,
- 3:22Speaker 1: that's lesbian fingers, I've got ten. Sorry, that's from Sex
- 3:31Speaker 1: and the City. It's called Shanghaiing, guys, And according to
- 3:37Speaker 1: popular lore, Portland wasn't just dabbling in it, they were
- 3:41Speaker 1: thriving on it. This city had a reputation as one
- 3:45Speaker 1: of the most dangerous ports on the West Coast, where
- 3:48Speaker 1: a night on the town could turn into a one
- 3:50Speaker 1: way ticket to indentured seafaring servitude.
- 3:55Speaker 3: And how you ask.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Were these poor souls whisked away so efficiently secret underground tunnels?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Of course, gotta be the tunnels. Hey, greepy people, Wait,
- 4:05Speaker 1: that's your life? Nicely, that's a nice intro.
- 4:15Speaker 3: That's how you said it perfectly.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Are you guys confused yet? Because who's talking? Who's who's?
- 4:21Speaker 1: Welcome to a very special episode from your two favorite Wait,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I just head up for your two favorite Pacific.
- 4:28Speaker 3: That's how many people behind you on the bed right now?
- 4:32Speaker 3: Oh my god, literally we're doing the same. I have
- 4:36Speaker 3: to post a picture.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Wait a minute from your two go right, number of
- 4:40Speaker 1: fingers favorite Pacific Northwest history podcasts.
- 4:44Speaker 3: That's right. I'm Shay, and I'm.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Jody, and I'm Caitlin.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Oh, I'm Cassie, and we are the hosts of collectively
- 4:51Speaker 1: the Randy Day Rabbit Holes Podcast and.
- 4:53Speaker 3: P ANDW Hants and Homicides.
- 4:56Speaker 1: That's right where history is unhinged, because I think that
- 4:59Speaker 1: you guys could as well. Right, Oh, we're so on.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Hin, definitely, yeah, that part for sure.
- 5:04Speaker 3: That's where we meet up right in the middle.
- 5:07Speaker 6: And we can confirm because we've spent this afternoon together
- 5:09Speaker 6: being unhinged.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely, so. You guys are very lucky because we
- 5:15Speaker 1: have come together on this here weekend in unidentified month,
- 5:23Speaker 1: on a pod pal's weekend in the beautiful city of Portland,
- 5:27Speaker 1: Oregon or Stumptown.
- 5:29Speaker 3: If you're nasty, oh nasty?
- 5:35Speaker 2: You know?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Are you know our script?
- 5:37Speaker 1: I may have listened to your podcast, and also we're nasty.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Like you said, we spent all day together.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We know you guys know things about us that none
- 5:53Speaker 1: of our listeners know at this boy, I mean Sam
- 5:56Speaker 1: Mean or Mean or Nan or uh yeah the black men. Well,
- 6:00Speaker 1: request will be coming in the mail very soon. Well,
- 6:05Speaker 1: I mean, wait, which way is that going?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 6:08Speaker 3: Both ways? We go both ways?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Oh hey, now, so we are actually in the home
- 6:15Speaker 1: of these two fabulous bitches. We are visiting to whom
- 6:18Speaker 1: we are actually meeting for the first time in I
- 6:22Speaker 1: R L which could be awkward and I get later
- 6:26Speaker 1: depending how much we drank.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Then that is young.
- 6:30Speaker 3: So what do you think, ladies? Are we as hot
- 6:32Speaker 3: as you imagined? Sit here in our company?
- 6:37Speaker 4: So much hotter? Actually?
- 6:38Speaker 3: Oh thank you a thousand times hotter.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Oh my god, you're so much younger than I thought
- 6:42Speaker 1: you sounded lush.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I mean I saw you guys, and I was like, wait,
- 6:48Speaker 3: this is who were going to hang out.
- 6:49Speaker 4: With what they're practically fed us us?
- 6:54Speaker 3: Oh my god, how can we like podcasts with us?
- 6:56Speaker 3: Two supermodels? I know, I wore no makeup today. I'm
- 7:00Speaker 3: very insecure. You are beautiful, both of you. The very
- 7:06Speaker 3: just sh it.
- 7:09Speaker 5: Was only a matter of time. I know everybody looks
- 7:12Speaker 5: at me because that's where they think.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I know all looked at you. I really felt like
- 7:16Speaker 3: it came from that my voice.
- 7:18Speaker 4: But no, not shorts.
- 7:20Speaker 3: The audience doesn't know. It could have been a ghost,
- 7:23Speaker 3: a ghost ghost snort. We don't know. Well, we could
- 7:27Speaker 3: have maybe brought one here from where we've been on I.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Know, So ladies, I have set the scene. Yes, what
- 7:33Speaker 1: did we get up to today? Well, I mean, you
- 7:36Speaker 1: don't know what we got up to this morning, but
- 7:38Speaker 1: what did we have a foursome got.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Up to today?
- 7:43Speaker 1: So yeah, tell us what we got up today and
- 7:45Speaker 1: what we're going to talk about on this episode.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Well, what did we do today? We went on a
- 7:50Speaker 3: Shanghai tunnel tour? What is that? A tour of the
- 7:53Speaker 3: Shanghai tunnels?
- 8:00Speaker 2: No?
- 8:00Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 8:02Speaker 1: First up, guys, let's do a little cavea. The term
- 8:06Speaker 1: Shanghid is actually fairly racist.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Oh no, it totally is. I think I don't understand
- 8:12Speaker 3: why we can still call it, still yelling it out
- 8:15Speaker 3: across Portland.
- 8:16Speaker 1: That's what we do because it was the Holy eighteen
- 8:20Speaker 1: hundreds where the Chinese were looked upon as basically animals,
- 8:25Speaker 1: and anything that was a problem in this country was
- 8:29Speaker 1: definitely those dirty yellow And I'm only saying, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: that's not my opinion, but you know what I mean. So,
- 8:36Speaker 1: but shanghaid Is tunnels is what they are called.
- 8:39Speaker 3: They are known as.
- 8:40Speaker 1: So we are going to use that word over and
- 8:42Speaker 1: over and over and again in this episode, and we
- 8:44Speaker 1: are trying. We are that does not us trying to well,
- 8:47Speaker 1: is there a.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Term that should be used instead? The kidnapped.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Kidney doesn't have the same ring to it the racist kidnapping,
- 8:58Speaker 1: But like, that's a mouthful.
- 9:00Speaker 3: It was doing the shanghaiing. It wasn't Chinese people, was it.
- 9:04Speaker 1: No, And that's the thing. It's it's called shanghaiing because
- 9:07Speaker 1: they would be sold into indentured servitude onto ships that
- 9:10Speaker 1: traded with Asia. So it was it necessarily that it
- 9:14Speaker 1: was Chinese captains that were uh, we'll get into the
- 9:18Speaker 1: whole history of this, but it wasn't just necessari that
- 9:21Speaker 1: it was Chinese captains. It could be American captains, but
- 9:23Speaker 1: they are trading with Asia anyway, we'll get into it.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Today we went on this Shanghai Tunnel tour experience. It
- 9:31Speaker 1: starts at the Old Town Pizza and Brewing in the
- 9:35Speaker 1: Old Merchant Hotel in the Old Town district of downtown Portland.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Which unfortunately does not have the glamor it once did.
- 9:45Speaker 3: But the smell when you walk in, I don't know
- 9:47Speaker 3: what you're talking.
- 9:48Speaker 1: It's a lot different than the smell outside when you
- 9:52Speaker 1: walk in. When you walk in, I was like, oh, yes,
- 9:54Speaker 1: we are eating pizza here. Yeah, unborginally isn't a part
- 9:57Speaker 1: of Portland that has fallen upon some really hard times,
- 10:01Speaker 1: but it is directly across the street from Cecy Slaughters,
- 10:04Speaker 1: which I have danced there and had some great times. Yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Old Town Pizza and brewing is basically the only way
- 10:13Speaker 1: to really access the Shanghai tunnels right now.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Right, I didn't know that, I think so.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Yeah, there's kind of a sprawling hidden network beneath Old Town.
- 10:23Speaker 1: There's trap doors hidden under barstools, or at least that's
- 10:26Speaker 1: the legend, right yea that were led to believe holding
- 10:29Speaker 1: cells carved into basement walls. Again, the legend that we
- 10:33Speaker 1: are told. Narrow brickline passageways leading all the way to
- 10:37Speaker 1: the docks. Some say you could walk for blocks beneath
- 10:41Speaker 1: the city, never touching sunlight, guided only by the echo
- 10:44Speaker 1: of your own terrified breathing.
- 10:47Speaker 3: Oh now it's not sounding terrified so much. It's excited.
- 10:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:59Speaker 1: There's a moment there were casting locked herself into the
- 11:01Speaker 1: room with the little handcuffs on the wall, and we
- 11:03Speaker 1: don't know what she was doing in there.
- 11:05Speaker 3: She did shut herself, don't. I had to test it
- 11:10Speaker 3: out make sure it was sturdy. So there, I can't
- 11:14Speaker 3: be here. But what are they doing in there? I
- 11:17Speaker 3: like to be in dark holes by myself? Now, that's
- 11:22Speaker 3: also what he said.
- 11:23Speaker 6: But we are jumping ahead again because oh my, we
- 11:25Speaker 6: haven't gotten there to the dark hole.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Yeah, this is certain to sound sexual. Why do I keep.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Probably really hard to look at any.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I can look at her, or I've got a great.
- 11:42Speaker 7: Vision, a lot of heat, the sparks, whatever, just switch
- 11:52Speaker 7: switch back and forth between us.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Jealous a little bit. I thought that we had a
- 12:00Speaker 3: we had a thing.
- 12:00Speaker 4: And then I'm not trying to get in the way
- 12:02Speaker 4: of anything.
- 12:05Speaker 3: We need to just turn these microphones off and see
- 12:07Speaker 3: what else. Oh my god, our new tag.
- 12:11Speaker 6: I'm history unhinged. I think it's like just us unhinged.
- 12:17Speaker 6: Oh we can talk about anything.
- 12:18Speaker 1: It's just unhinged for so stupid, because that's what's happening.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I thought that was implied.
- 12:24Speaker 8: Oh my, God, your usband's gonna listen to this episode.
- 12:26Speaker 8: Your's gonna listen to this episode? My husband will not.
- 12:34Speaker 8: You guys get p having husbands. I'm just saying that, right,
- 12:37Speaker 8: you're like that your mom listens to your.
- 12:42Speaker 3: My mom does? She is. She's like our most dedicated listener.
- 12:47Speaker 3: I love it. Sorry, gus mom. We are just joking.
- 12:50Speaker 6: Yes, this is one that probably should be on the
- 12:54Speaker 6: actually videosca see how much we're just joking, because it
- 12:57Speaker 6: probably sounds real bad.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Well, okay, so I'm gonna again try to set the
- 13:04Speaker 1: scenes of what we were we were experiencing down there.
- 13:07Speaker 1: There are whispers of ghostly figures still wondering those tunnels,
- 13:12Speaker 1: long dead victims of the Shanghai trade, or maybe just
- 13:16Speaker 1: the echoes of a really bad bar crawl. Our tour
- 13:21Speaker 1: guide shout out to Doug Douglas.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Oh my god, Dougie.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He was dougieastic he is. We found out at the
- 13:32Speaker 1: end he's a he's a playwright, and I feel like he.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Just shouted it out. I'm a playwright. I know. I
- 13:38Speaker 3: go hands down, Doug, which is funny because he had
- 13:47Speaker 3: his hands up the whole time. He's so he did
- 13:50Speaker 3: so good.
- 13:50Speaker 6: He said, you can tell he's a storyteller because he
- 13:53Speaker 6: must at least practice out his plays that he play rights,
- 13:57Speaker 6: because he's very good at you know, how we delivers
- 14:00Speaker 6: the message and the story and and then the mood,
- 14:05Speaker 6: the mood setting the mood, and then just the ambiance
- 14:07Speaker 6: of the whole place. I loved where we sat.
- 14:10Speaker 3: In the chairs and there was candles.
- 14:13Speaker 6: They sat in a chair and just told this story
- 14:15Speaker 6: and it was the best.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yeah. I wasn't expecting that to be able to just
- 14:20Speaker 3: like go down into the actual like tunnels and then
- 14:24Speaker 3: it was dark down there. They had like those candles
- 14:26Speaker 3: going chill in there.
- 14:28Speaker 6: How many stops do you think we had where we
- 14:31Speaker 6: sat in rooms and he told us a story.
- 14:33Speaker 9: I mean it was a really like five or six
- 14:37Speaker 9: It felt like. Yeah, and I'm a tour guide as well. Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 9: have I told anybody?
- 14:46Speaker 3: You never told me that? Have you ever told you
- 14:49Speaker 3: guys about pretty gritty tours? I don't think I've heard
- 14:52Speaker 3: of it? No, not once today? Have I heard that name?
- 14:55Speaker 3: You said? Gretty, pretty gritty? Can you spell it? Are
- 15:04Speaker 3: eaten here and tours?
- 15:10Speaker 1: Okay, So as a fellow tour guide and uh fake historian,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I play a historian on the radio.
- 15:22Speaker 3: You do literally, so, uh, you know it.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Really, he did a great job in setting the scene
- 15:33Speaker 1: in leaving you hanging. I mean, he's no Chris Stottinger,
- 15:37Speaker 1: he is the King, but he did a really good
- 15:40Speaker 1: job of setting the scene, of making things feel nice
- 15:44Speaker 1: and creepy, of telling stories in a way that didn't
- 15:47Speaker 1: feel cheesy. Yeah, you know you actually, And I'm the
- 15:52Speaker 1: skeptic in the room, right, Like, I know, you're very
- 15:54Speaker 1: much a believer.
- 15:55Speaker 3: You are, you're very very, You're very.
- 15:59Speaker 4: And you're just.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Kind of sort of yeah. I mean, I'm I'm very
- 16:04Speaker 3: I want to I want just some more. Caleb doesn't
- 16:07Speaker 3: want to.
- 16:09Speaker 4: I'm definitely a very very I'm just like a very reluctant,
- 16:14Speaker 4: very very I'm.
- 16:15Speaker 6: An eager so I but also okay, so here's the problem.
- 16:18Speaker 6: I'm very eager, but then I'm also such a skeptic.
- 16:22Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel like everyone who's eager they know, okay,
- 16:27Speaker 5: they know, and they want nothing to do with you fuckers.
- 16:29Speaker 4: And they're like, what's that chick the one who looks
- 16:32Speaker 4: like she's trying to get away like that?
- 16:36Speaker 1: Okay, so you believe, but you don't. You're like I believe,
- 16:39Speaker 1: but I don't want to see it.
- 16:40Speaker 10: Yeah yeah, okay, yeah, okay, okay, unlike people that are
- 16:46Speaker 10: like I believe and I just want nothing else but
- 16:48Speaker 10: to like absorb everything and the energy.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Sorry, not right there. I'm like her, obviously I'm real.
- 16:54Speaker 3: When on our podcast, I'm like always the downer, I'm like, well,
- 16:57Speaker 3: these people say these ghosts, ghosts, things happen, but like
- 17:01Speaker 3: these other people say that, like that's all not real.
- 17:04Speaker 3: So like, I'm real. I like both sides of everything.
- 17:07Speaker 1: But I want to believe, you know, right, same, but
- 17:10Speaker 1: I need some good proof and so yeah, when I
- 17:13Speaker 1: get quote unquote proof, I'm like, nah, that's not good enough.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Well, we'll get around to.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Something that our tour guy, Doug showed us in this
- 17:28Speaker 1: tour that kind of had me. It took me from
- 17:32Speaker 1: a on a scale of one to ten, one being
- 17:35Speaker 1: I don't believe in any of it and ten being
- 17:37Speaker 1: I believe in any of it. And I started out
- 17:39Speaker 1: at a two point five. What he showed us at
- 17:42Speaker 1: the end took me to a three point five at least,
- 17:44Speaker 1: oh a whole point. It creeped me the f out.
- 17:48Speaker 1: So we'll get there though, right, Yeah, I was into that. Yeah,
- 18:01Speaker 1: tell us how we started this out. Tell us how
- 18:04Speaker 1: Doug started us out tonight, or I can I can
- 18:08Speaker 1: do it if.
- 18:08Speaker 3: You really can, or if you like I blacked out,
- 18:11Speaker 3: I know. I was like, that's a great way to
- 18:14Speaker 3: put it.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Like, I tried to absorb as little as possible.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Oh no, I would like I would.
- 18:20Speaker 6: He would tell a part of a story and then
- 18:23Speaker 6: all of a sudden, I'd be like, oh shoot, I
- 18:24Speaker 6: kept thinking about that and he's already moved on to
- 18:26Speaker 6: something else.
- 18:27Speaker 3: Miss half of it. Well, we did start out going
- 18:31Speaker 3: into this gorgeous courtyard that I had no idea. It
- 18:34Speaker 3: was like in this buildings everywhere. I wanted to spend
- 18:38Speaker 3: more time there. It was great. Yeah, the ivy there
- 18:43Speaker 3: was like a water feature which wasn't on, but it
- 18:45Speaker 3: kind of looked like a well. I'm a middle I
- 18:47Speaker 3: wanted to know was that a well? Was that a well?
- 18:49Speaker 3: At some point? Was was Nina's body at the bottom
- 18:52Speaker 3: of that well?
- 18:53Speaker 4: We don't know who's night of We don't know yet
- 18:55Speaker 4: know they found her in the elevator.
- 18:57Speaker 3: I know I saw the well though, and I oh,
- 19:00Speaker 3: I know, nice job. Actually was me who said at first,
- 19:05Speaker 3: at you the only things I can really remember from
- 19:09Speaker 3: starting was he definitely started telling us like the history
- 19:12Speaker 3: of the building and stuff. But then he went around
- 19:14Speaker 3: and like asked everyone on a scale of one to ten,
- 19:16Speaker 3: like what's your believability level or whatever? So we all
- 19:21Speaker 3: he made every one answer Yes, I appreciated that. It's
- 19:27Speaker 3: engagement forced, so we had to all engage. We had to. Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 3: I don't like that, I said, two thousand. Yeah, Caitlyn,
- 19:35Speaker 3: what were we do? I don't like that at all.
- 19:38Speaker 4: But you were camp when they make you sing songs
- 19:40Speaker 4: and you know, didicate your life to Jesus. I'm like,
- 19:44Speaker 4: I'm not about did you.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Did you appreciate everybody else sharing because you got to
- 19:49Speaker 3: hear it.
- 19:49Speaker 4: I only know any of them, so I don't really care.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I'm gonna be honest. I was kind of like.
- 19:55Speaker 5: It's like at the corporate retreat when we go around
- 19:58Speaker 5: and say everybody's name, I'm like already forgotten every single
- 20:02Speaker 5: one of them.
- 20:03Speaker 3: I mean same, Yes, they were all quite low, though.
- 20:06Speaker 3: I was surprised. I feel like everyone was like two,
- 20:08Speaker 3: but one guy like seven. The one guy was like
- 20:11Speaker 3: two and his girlfriend was like oh ten. Definitely they
- 20:15Speaker 3: were like, oh, what's that relationship one? You know what?
- 20:20Speaker 6: We were wearing our podcast shirts. They could hear this,
- 20:23Speaker 6: so hey, if you are listening, I don't.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Know, and we're still wearing thought about my coats the
- 20:30Speaker 1: entire time, I realized, so they don't know any I
- 20:33Speaker 1: took my not oh purpose and I had my banie on.
- 20:37Speaker 1: That is too small to I know, but it's damn anyway.
- 20:40Speaker 1: So Cassie was a ten thousand, was off the Richter scale.
- 20:45Speaker 1: It doesn't even like measure.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Caitlin was a seventh. I think that's what you said.
- 20:52Speaker 3: I was nine.
- 20:54Speaker 4: I said nine.
- 20:55Speaker 3: Yeah, oh, I thought you said seven. You're the only
- 20:57Speaker 3: Debbie Downer around here. Panic answered, you were seven. Okay,
- 21:01Speaker 3: it was seven.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Basically almost like do I say ten? That feels like
- 21:05Speaker 4: too much? And then I was like nine point five.
- 21:07Speaker 4: And then I was like, everyone's gonna be like, what
- 21:09Speaker 4: a fucking weird?
- 21:10Speaker 3: Like I got an answer, they're staring at me. And
- 21:13Speaker 3: then I said a two point five and nine, I know.
- 21:20Speaker 5: I was like, well everybody else did, like whole numbers.
- 21:23Speaker 5: And then Cassie was like two thousand.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Well that's why I felt safe to say two point five. Yeah,
- 21:30Speaker 3: you were this is a safe space. We can all
- 21:33Speaker 3: say whatever we want. I love judgment, no judgment about
- 21:37Speaker 3: whatever number is. You love star Trek And so he said,
- 21:40Speaker 3: that's yeah, the star space.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Okay, well, oh not if you say stupid stuff.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Okay.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Anyway, So so we had this courtyard scene and then
- 21:52Speaker 1: he tells us about the resident ghost Nina, which is
- 21:57Speaker 1: just Nina but pronounced differently.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I never heard her. I've never heard it pronounced Nina.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I always heard it pronounced Nina on everything I've listened
- 22:06Speaker 3: to and the other I've been pronounced Nina. Were you there, No, sir,
- 22:12Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 22:12Speaker 4: Seems weird.
- 22:13Speaker 3: That's where I'm gonna call you on this, Doug. I'm
- 22:15Speaker 3: pointing at the mirrors of Douglas. There's a space.
- 22:22Speaker 7: You know.
- 22:26Speaker 3: He's here, Douglas, Douglas, Douglas.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Who does that? This woman is a monster, right?
- 22:35Speaker 3: You know you love me? Anyway?
- 22:38Speaker 1: So, yeah, Nina, though, how do we know it's not
- 22:41Speaker 1: Nina because it's spelled Nina. Anyway, what was the story
- 22:44Speaker 1: behind Nina slash Nina?
- 22:48Speaker 3: She died me. Wow, I've heard different. Well, I don't know,
- 22:57Speaker 3: I don't exactly remember. I guess the very first story
- 22:59Speaker 3: is I heard on the tours like years and years ago.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I went on. I'm trying to think, Okay, I guess
- 23:04Speaker 3: I remember the one today though. She kind of like
- 23:08Speaker 3: ratted on because it used to be a brothel, right,
- 23:11Speaker 3: She kind of like ratted out the brothel in hopes
- 23:14Speaker 3: of being saved and getting out of there, and she
- 23:18Speaker 3: was ultimately like murdered. I think I'm dead.
- 23:23Speaker 4: I don't know if that means moiter, yeah.
- 23:26Speaker 6: Or she reported it to the police, but the police
- 23:29Speaker 6: were involved in the hole, yeah, the police whole and
- 23:33Speaker 6: so then because she reported it and then and then
- 23:37Speaker 6: somebody was also uh investigating corrupt.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Well, no, it was it was a Christian temperance sort
- 23:46Speaker 1: of movement that was like, we gotta figure out how
- 23:49Speaker 1: we can shut down all the brothels, and so they
- 23:51Speaker 1: wanted to use her as like an informant. I don't
- 23:53Speaker 1: know why they needed to know the inside workings of
- 23:56Speaker 1: the brothel.
- 23:56Speaker 3: There, but it shut down. I gets maybe if they're
- 23:59Speaker 3: looking for like a legal things because brothels weren't illegal, right.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think that it depended on I mean, every town
- 24:06Speaker 1: had its own regulations about where like the vice could exist.
- 24:11Speaker 3: So like Seattle it was.
- 24:14Speaker 1: It was just dependent on the mayyor of the time,
- 24:16Speaker 1: and then they would have like that line of like, okay,
- 24:18Speaker 1: well all the gambling dens and brothels could be like
- 24:21Speaker 1: south of Yesler.
- 24:23Speaker 3: It wasn't a slur at the time, but whatever, line right,
- 24:26Speaker 3: And I'm sure.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I don't know Portland history as well I should. We're
- 24:31Speaker 1: gonna get into that, but it probably was similar where
- 24:33Speaker 1: they tried to contain all of the gambling dens and
- 24:38Speaker 1: saloons and brothels into one district. And maybe Merchant Hotel
- 24:43Speaker 1: was kind of riding the line, but it didn't sound
- 24:45Speaker 1: like it.
- 24:46Speaker 3: I don't. It seems weird to me why you would
- 24:48Speaker 3: want to shut down a brothel when there he said,
- 24:51Speaker 3: there was like fifteen men per like one woman. Can
- 24:56Speaker 3: you imagine shutting down the bro like there's just a
- 24:58Speaker 3: bunch of horny men running on the streets dangerous.
- 25:02Speaker 1: These Christian temperance lees just didn't care about that, right.
- 25:05Speaker 1: They were like, it's all bad, it's all sinful, we
- 25:08Speaker 1: gotta shut it all down.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I mean, you remember we talked about that when we
- 25:12Speaker 5: did the Prohibition live, Like they were like, that's real bad.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Don't don't drink it. It's gonna make you a really
- 25:20Speaker 5: bad dude.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Can't drink and you can't. What the hell is wrong
- 25:23Speaker 3: with them?
- 25:24Speaker 1: What's the point of life at that point? I mean
- 25:26Speaker 1: seriously though, like at that time, your life was hard.
- 25:32Speaker 1: These guys worked hard, and they're like beating.
- 25:36Speaker 4: Their wives, you know, I mean mainly like number one,
- 25:42Speaker 4: number two, and number three. Sometimes they like did some logging.
- 25:46Speaker 1: But it makes it sound like I'm like a feel
- 25:53Speaker 1: bad for these guys, like are you taking today?
- 26:00Speaker 3: Like I just really I them lumber Jackson Sailors needs to.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Tell me I'm too woke and today they're going to
- 26:10Speaker 1: be like I'm not woken enough.
- 26:13Speaker 4: You really can't win, you know.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Well, here's the other thing that I think about.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Okay, so they found her her body at the bottom
- 26:19Speaker 1: of elevator chef, But we were talking to h. Richard,
- 26:23Speaker 1: who runs the Civil War Seattle history tours, and he
- 26:28Speaker 1: was telling us he was going to take us on
- 26:30Speaker 1: this whole tour of downtown Seattle elevator deaths holy because apparently,
- 26:36Speaker 1: like in the early days of elevators, like people died
- 26:39Speaker 1: in them all the time because like the doors would
- 26:42Speaker 1: open and there's no elevator there and people just walk
- 26:44Speaker 1: into it.
- 26:45Speaker 3: I was wondering how that even happens. Yeah, I when I.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Heard that, I was like, well, maybe she just literally
- 26:52Speaker 1: walked into the elevator shaft.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Wait wait, how do we say it again? It wasn't
- 26:59Speaker 3: moy at her, It was Moid. She was Moid. Did
- 27:04Speaker 3: it could just be a whoopsie? Yeah, because it does
- 27:07Speaker 3: definitely seem shady, like, how does that happen? How do
- 27:10Speaker 3: you fall down an elevator shaption? The elevator be there
- 27:12Speaker 3: to catch you? But like back then, oh no, not
- 27:15Speaker 3: back then. If it was that common, I mean, who
- 27:17Speaker 3: knows it? Could you were taking your life in your
- 27:20Speaker 3: hands to write an elevator?
- 27:21Speaker 4: Yeah, that's too convenient though, I'm sorry.
- 27:23Speaker 3: Oh weird.
- 27:24Speaker 4: She's used elevators before, presumably.
- 27:27Speaker 3: Right now she lived in that building right with her kid.
- 27:29Speaker 5: But suddenly as soon as she's like kind of turned
- 27:32Speaker 5: as it were, Oh oh now she's forgotten how they
- 27:35Speaker 5: work and how to use them.
- 27:36Speaker 3: Couldn't possibly, Caitlin, I just want to remind you of
- 27:39Speaker 3: one thing. What it was the eighteen hundred. So we're
- 27:44Speaker 3: literally everything will kill you? Well, sure, sure, I mean
- 27:49Speaker 3: it's like Australia. Yeah, and I'm sort of old. Was
- 27:52Speaker 3: forty old? Was forty right? I mean back then.
- 27:55Speaker 5: Unfortunately it was mostly her line of work being in Portland,
- 28:00Speaker 5: ppeb any Man, any of them.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Anyway, what we have been going on about for fifteen
- 28:07Speaker 1: minutes or whatever is Nina Slash Nina the resident ghost.
- 28:12Speaker 1: And apparently when people experience Nina, you hear music. Apparently,
- 28:17Speaker 1: no you or you smell perfume. Oh yeah, that is
- 28:21Speaker 1: one of the big things about her. That's really difficult
- 28:23Speaker 1: because people are highly suggestible. You say, do you have
- 28:30Speaker 1: smell perfume? Immediately I smelled the perfume and I was
- 28:33Speaker 1: going around sniffing each one of you.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 28:35Speaker 6: No, So at first he said, I'm not gonna he said,
- 28:37Speaker 6: at first, I don't want to be suggesting anything because
- 28:40Speaker 6: that's the way that mine works. I'm not going to
- 28:42Speaker 6: tell you what the smell was, he said, I'm not
- 28:44Speaker 6: going to tell you the smell. So I walked through
- 28:46Speaker 6: this place thinking.
- 28:48Speaker 3: God, did she smell like pea? And then later he
- 28:55Speaker 3: goes it was perfumed. Did anyone smell fume? And I
- 28:59Speaker 3: was like, I guess I read stuff, so I knew
- 29:01Speaker 3: it was perfume. Oh got it? Maybe that was and
- 29:04Speaker 3: it wasn't. So I was like, got that, poor woman, Like.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I know, everything around here smelled like pee right that
- 29:12Speaker 1: last part we were and smelled so strong of b I.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Smelled no pea. I didn't.
- 29:16Speaker 6: It was very musty down there, so yeah, I smelled
- 29:20Speaker 6: the mildew, but then the ground and dirt, so underground
- 29:25Speaker 6: and dirt, so it's it's going to be musty.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of wet. I smelled a musty smell.
- 29:31Speaker 3: But like when you said you kept smelling pea and
- 29:33Speaker 3: I didn't smell it, I kind of thought, like, was
- 29:35Speaker 3: that something paranormal? Then, like, were you smelling like one
- 29:39Speaker 3: of the other figures that they were saying that they
- 29:41Speaker 3: see down there.
- 29:43Speaker 4: Like a paranormal or was I just having a stroke.
- 29:46Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 29:47Speaker 4: I am old to smell popcorn.
- 29:49Speaker 3: I thought it was burnt toast and oranges.
- 29:52Speaker 6: Burnt toast for sure, Yeah, like burt like burnt like
- 29:55Speaker 6: some burnt things firing.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Or p.
- 30:00Speaker 3: He's paranormal.
- 30:01Speaker 1: So our guide took us down into the basement underneath
- 30:05Speaker 1: the Old Town Pizza and Brewing which is where the
- 30:09Speaker 1: which he called so called Shang High Tunnels, and he
- 30:11Speaker 1: made very clear throughout this tour it's the so called
- 30:15Speaker 1: Shang High Tunnels because the legend has kind of taken
- 30:18Speaker 1: over the truth. And that is where I come in
- 30:21Speaker 1: because my name is Shay One and my favorite thing,
- 30:27Speaker 1: besides being a know it all, is ruining everything, and
- 30:29Speaker 1: maybe that's go hand in hand.
- 30:31Speaker 3: See, this is why I wanted you to research this
- 30:33Speaker 3: episode because I'm like, I've been dreading it because I
- 30:35Speaker 3: know what I'm gonna say about it and it's not.
- 30:37Speaker 3: No one's gonna like it and they're gonna hate me after.
- 30:39Speaker 3: It's not as exciting as you think it's gonna be.
- 30:42Speaker 3: So I'm like, you, you do the research. I am
- 30:44Speaker 3: happy to let everyone hate you say ruins everything. It's
- 30:50Speaker 3: kind of a joke we have.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Well yeah, I mean, and this is where I do
- 30:55Speaker 1: my thing, and I ruin it because the truth is
- 31:00Speaker 1: not nearly as sexy or spooky as you want it
- 31:03Speaker 1: to be. And while this tour was fucking fantastic, yeah,
- 31:07Speaker 1: and me being a big fat skeptic, I still had
- 31:10Speaker 1: a great time. I still got myself creeped out. And
- 31:12Speaker 1: we'll get to what we saw in the end that
- 31:15Speaker 1: may have started to change my mind to be a
- 31:19Speaker 1: little less of a stick up the butt skeptic too.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Maybe the stick's pulled out of my butt at least.
- 31:27Speaker 3: But it is a stick.
- 31:32Speaker 5: Just just making sure because sometimes you know, like say
- 31:35Speaker 5: like yeah, like you know, maybe like it would be
- 31:39Speaker 5: worth considering using something like silicone more comfortable.
- 31:42Speaker 3: You know, that would be easier soft for sure? There
- 31:56Speaker 3: we can keep going.
- 31:58Speaker 4: Is it a vibrating stick?
- 32:01Speaker 3: God, don't threaten me with a good time, all right,
- 32:13Speaker 3: So let's start with the tunnels. Yes, they are real.
- 32:16Speaker 3: We were there. I was like, inside of them, we're
- 32:20Speaker 3: not hallustinating.
- 32:21Speaker 4: I was like, I'm not really sure what she's looking
- 32:23Speaker 4: for here.
- 32:24Speaker 1: But they weren't designed to smuggle bodies. They were basically
- 32:28Speaker 1: a nineteenth century version of a loading dock. So Portland
- 32:31Speaker 1: had a thriving commercial district and businesses needed a way
- 32:35Speaker 1: to move goods from the docks to the locations without
- 32:40Speaker 1: having to fight the muddy, poopy streets.
- 32:44Speaker 3: Like think about this. So it was it was dirt streets, horse.
- 32:47Speaker 1: Drawn ocks, cattle drawn wagons, and you can't ask your
- 32:53Speaker 1: cattle or your horses to poop in a convenient place.
- 32:57Speaker 3: That was not the street and then it rains here.
- 32:59Speaker 1: So what happens is it rains and they walk over
- 33:02Speaker 1: it and becomes a soupy mire of shot and mud.
- 33:06Speaker 1: And then also all the business there's no indoor plumbing.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Everybody around has chamber. Possibly they throw it out.
- 33:10Speaker 2: The window in the stream.
- 33:12Speaker 3: They built these tunnels to be sensible and efficient.
- 33:16Speaker 1: I mean, it's kind of boring, but things would come
- 33:19Speaker 1: in off of the ships, like Doug told us so,
- 33:22Speaker 1: and they would move the goods throughout these tunnels through
- 33:25Speaker 1: the basements to get where they were. And so that's
- 33:27Speaker 1: really why Portland has underground, which is interesting because it's
- 33:31Speaker 1: different than Seattle. So Seattle has an underground because Seattle
- 33:35Speaker 1: was a marsh and they came in, built a sawmill
- 33:39Speaker 1: and started just dumping all the sawmill debris and all
- 33:42Speaker 1: of their trash into the swamp, built it up, built
- 33:45Speaker 1: the city on top of that, made out of wood.
- 33:47Speaker 3: It burnt down and then they were like, well, we'll
- 33:53Speaker 3: just build the city on top of that.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And so that is the reason that Seattle has an underground,
- 33:58Speaker 1: because the underground is the old city with the new
- 34:01Speaker 1: city built on top. It's different, like every city has
- 34:05Speaker 1: a different reason. For their underground, which is very interesting,
- 34:07Speaker 1: like Tacoma has a different underground because they built it
- 34:10Speaker 1: on purpose because it was sloped, and so they built
- 34:13Speaker 1: the underground was intentional and here also it was intentional,
- 34:18Speaker 1: like we need a way to get things around without
- 34:20Speaker 1: having to move him through this quagmire of poop and despair.
- 34:25Speaker 3: So smart.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Yeah, the big leap the tunnels as secret passageways for
- 34:30Speaker 1: kidnap men starts with one Stuart Holbrook. So our tour
- 34:36Speaker 1: guide Doug did not bring up how the Shanghai tunnel
- 34:40Speaker 1: legend started. So Stuart Holbrook was a very colorful character,
- 34:46Speaker 1: and in the nineteen thirties he began spinning tales on
- 34:48Speaker 1: the radio and in print about Portland's dark, seedy underbelly.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So he was a storyteller, not a historian, and he
- 34:56Speaker 1: knew his audience. His accounts of trapdoors, kidnapping and shadowy
- 35:00Speaker 1: tunnels were gripping and entirely lacking in sources. But he
- 35:04Speaker 1: put it out as a radio broadcast, and what do
- 35:08Speaker 1: we know about radio broadcasts in the twenties and thirties,
- 35:11Speaker 1: as people took.
- 35:11Speaker 3: It in as fact, Yeah, totally. If it's on the radio,
- 35:15Speaker 3: it's true.
- 35:16Speaker 1: So then came Michael P. Jones in the nineteen seventies,
- 35:19Speaker 1: who took Kulbrick's stories and ran with them. He said
- 35:22Speaker 1: he had been exploring the tunnel since nineteen sixty nine
- 35:26Speaker 1: and that he had a map of the network of tunnels.
- 35:29Speaker 1: So then, of course he began offering tours, which have
- 35:33Speaker 1: continued since nineteen seventy nine, which is as long as.
- 35:36Speaker 3: I have been alive. Guys, Oh my goodness, so long.
- 35:42Speaker 3: I'm sorry. Did I just like ruin your guys' vision
- 35:45Speaker 3: of me as being like this young hot thing. I
- 35:48Speaker 3: meant yes young. No, Yeah, Shay has self esteem issues.
- 35:56Speaker 3: I think it's more of a flex to like the
- 35:58Speaker 3: older you are, to say, okay, I'm this old, and
- 36:01Speaker 3: people would be like what.
- 36:06Speaker 7: Oh no.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Every time we mentioned her grand children, people were like
- 36:10Speaker 3: what the fuck? Grand children? She's like, I got seven
- 36:15Speaker 3: of them, and they're like, no, no, you're lying. No,
- 36:20Speaker 3: I wouldn't believe it.
- 36:21Speaker 4: She's like, that's a really weird thing to lie about.
- 36:26Speaker 1: So, according to historians and researchers like the good folks
- 36:29Speaker 1: over at the Organ Historical Society and the Organ Encyclopedia,
- 36:33Speaker 1: there's very little evidence to support the claim that these
- 36:37Speaker 1: tunnels were ever widely used for shanghaiing. In fact, the
- 36:40Speaker 1: most consistent accounts of shanghaiing in Portland have more to
- 36:43Speaker 1: do with forged PaperWorks, bike drinks and those crimpmen that
- 36:49Speaker 1: were the crimpers. Yeah wait, no, that's why you would
- 36:54Speaker 1: use on your hair in the eighties. Yeah, that's back,
- 36:58Speaker 1: Yeah it is.
- 36:59Speaker 3: It's back. Oh yeah, sounds like a great way to
- 37:01Speaker 3: burn your hair off. We just let the kids do it.
- 37:04Speaker 3: It's fine, dull learn yep.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Anyway, so it was it was more of that and Doug,
- 37:10Speaker 1: I really appreciate that. Doug sat us down in the dark.
- 37:14Speaker 3: Oh it was the best.
- 37:16Speaker 1: And honestly, like I was sitting there, we were sitting
- 37:19Speaker 1: around lanterns in the basement, in this creepy dark basement,
- 37:24Speaker 1: musty with these lanterns and they're all flickering. And he
- 37:27Speaker 1: sets us down and he's like, okay, look, so I
- 37:30Speaker 1: call it the shame, the so called Shanghai tunnels for
- 37:33Speaker 1: a reason. And then he explains this, and he explains
- 37:36Speaker 1: about the crumpers, and I'm just like sitting there, wide
- 37:38Speaker 1: eye and nodding and like my heart's doing the like cartoon,
- 37:43Speaker 1: like I love it.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Yeah, because like that's honestly so scary, like that did
- 37:51Speaker 3: pretty much happen, just not like the way that we
- 37:54Speaker 3: think of it, right tunnels, but it did actually happen.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Are you going to go into crumping and like what
- 37:58Speaker 3: it is? No, it's actually to me it sounds more
- 38:00Speaker 3: like the timeshare salesman kind of a little bit where
- 38:07Speaker 3: they're like.
- 38:09Speaker 4: A timeshare on this year, man, do you want.
- 38:12Speaker 1: A dinner and a free vacation, just show up for
- 38:15Speaker 1: this three hour seminar and then also.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Okay, well listen, people should already know better about a
- 38:22Speaker 5: three hour tour.
- 38:24Speaker 1: So first off, the trap doors in the Shangha tunnel
- 38:28Speaker 1: tours that we saw, do you want me to ruin it?
- 38:30Speaker 3: Can ruin it?
- 38:30Speaker 1: Because I looked at the hinges and then I looked
- 38:33Speaker 1: behind them. Those are just put there for show, I
- 38:36Speaker 1: kind of thought, So I think he said that, Oh,
- 38:41Speaker 1: I don't know. We kept talking also like it was
- 38:44Speaker 1: a lot to absorb and it was a lot so interesting,
- 38:47Speaker 1: so you wanted to sit on it for a minute.
- 38:49Speaker 3: But then he kept going. I was thinking maybe they
- 38:51Speaker 3: redid them because they fell out, But honestly, like that
- 38:54Speaker 3: could just be easy access to get like the stock.
- 38:58Speaker 1: There's nothing above if you look above those trap doors,
- 39:01Speaker 1: it is just the floor choice above.
- 39:03Speaker 3: Oh okay, you don't think like maybe in the past
- 39:05Speaker 3: there was something above or not right there? Okay.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Also down there, he showed a couple of rooms that
- 39:11Speaker 1: were quote unquote holding cells right right, so would feel
- 39:13Speaker 1: people and put them in there, and one even had
- 39:15Speaker 1: a bunk bed and with some sexy restraints. But of
- 39:21Speaker 1: course she found it's dark in there. And these were
- 39:24Speaker 1: dark color Shane with like a leather sat for your
- 39:27Speaker 1: wrist straps, like she's.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Like, look at this. I was like, hey, oh hello,
- 39:32Speaker 3: that I don't know it for me. Do you think
- 39:34Speaker 3: those were more modern too?
- 39:36Speaker 2: Well?
- 39:36Speaker 1: The the leather on they seemed pretty old, but they
- 39:41Speaker 1: did you know, you can age leather really easily or
- 39:44Speaker 1: ventured stores maybe, but right, I mean I think those
- 39:48Speaker 1: were more likely just storage rooms.
- 39:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so too. And the the story of.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Putting people through trap doors in the bar and then
- 39:59Speaker 1: putting them in a whole cell and taking their shoes away,
- 40:01Speaker 1: and then putting glass in the tunnels. These are the
- 40:04Speaker 1: stories that there is no proof that that happened. That
- 40:08Speaker 1: is hippocryphal.
- 40:09Speaker 3: It is not.
- 40:10Speaker 1: There's nothing behind it. This is just the legend of story.
- 40:14Speaker 1: There's no evidence to back that up.
- 40:18Speaker 3: And does it all come back to like that one
- 40:19Speaker 3: guy who started all the stories on the radio.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Yeah, so it was the guy in the thirties with
- 40:24Speaker 1: the radio and the guy in the seventies that was like,
- 40:26Speaker 1: that's a great story, let's go there. And you know,
- 40:30Speaker 1: it's not the first time this sort of thing has happened.
- 40:32Speaker 1: We look at the Seattle Underground, the Bill Spieedle tours. Yeah,
- 40:36Speaker 1: he is the king and the absolute end all be
- 40:40Speaker 1: all of the Seattle Underground. But he doesn't state his
- 40:45Speaker 1: sources anywhere. I mean, so you read his books, he
- 40:48Speaker 1: doesn't state his sources. His histories are always the most interesting,
- 40:54Speaker 1: the most spicy, like the ones that our podcast is like, fantastic.
- 41:00Speaker 1: To your sources, sir, there are none. Yeah, And he
- 41:05Speaker 1: based a whole like empire on it and multiple books.
- 41:09Speaker 1: And I feel like this is kind of the same thing.
- 41:11Speaker 1: And that's the problem with history, right, Like a lot
- 41:13Speaker 1: of history is just oral. It's people telling people stories
- 41:15Speaker 1: and then they write it down right.
- 41:16Speaker 3: And I was gonna say to a lot of the
- 41:18Speaker 3: shady shit, like why would there be a record of that.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Well, sure, and of course there was shady shit going on,
- 41:24Speaker 1: and sure there was probably somebody got dropped through a
- 41:26Speaker 1: trapdoor in a bar at some point in Portland. Oh,
- 41:29Speaker 1: I'm sure at least once or twice.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Maybe even just for fun, I would do it.
- 41:35Speaker 1: You put a little padding down there, I will drop
- 41:37Speaker 1: through that trap door and then those those like restraints
- 41:39Speaker 1: were in there, Like what's next?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah, boy, she's like fox stairs. We need the experience
- 41:45Speaker 3: next time. I think they need to start implementing.
- 41:48Speaker 1: That's what we need to do, is we need to
- 41:49Speaker 1: start the fake shame experience experience.
- 41:53Speaker 3: And then wait, there are full empty buildings above. Could
- 41:59Speaker 3: we also? Then there was zipline on top of Angelliyah
- 42:02Speaker 3: and then you climb up and you do a zipline
- 42:04Speaker 3: to the bar to a bar. Yes, yes, I which
- 42:08Speaker 3: you're not zipline to a bar. I'm not for ziplining,
- 42:11Speaker 3: but if you put a bar at the end, I
- 42:12Speaker 3: might do it. Love ziplining.
- 42:16Speaker 1: So yeah, there were indeed cases of shanghaiing in the
- 42:19Speaker 1: Pacific Northwest and especially in those chaotic times of maritime trade.
- 42:24Speaker 1: If we didn't explain it before, this is the practice
- 42:26Speaker 1: of kidnapping a man specifically, I don't think this happened
- 42:30Speaker 1: to women. Women were kidnapped for other reasons. Not to
- 42:33Speaker 1: serve on a ship unless it was serving anyone specific function,
- 42:38Speaker 1: and these were usually ones doing trade with Asian with Asia.
- 42:43Speaker 1: Again why it's called shanghaiing. In the late eighteen hundreds,
- 42:47Speaker 1: as we've talked about, anti Chinese sentiment was rampant, So
- 42:52Speaker 1: anything that could be attributed to being a negative connotation
- 42:55Speaker 1: against people of Asian descent boo. So in the nineteenth
- 42:59Speaker 1: century law, a lot of sailors were under labor contracts
- 43:02Speaker 1: and it was basically indentured servitude, and they would sometimes
- 43:08Speaker 1: jump ship when they got into a big pork because
- 43:11Speaker 1: they were like this what.
- 43:13Speaker 3: Sucks by yea, take my chances with the mermaids.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Right exactly like a beaver out of the plane. So
- 43:26Speaker 1: reference episode what sixty sixty eight?
- 43:29Speaker 3: Oh guys, I did not tell you you did episode.
- 43:34Speaker 3: It's very special.
- 43:35Speaker 4: It's never sixty nine, isn't it.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we are excited. That's why we were getting nasty
- 43:44Speaker 3: sixty We were just very special episode in so many ways.
- 43:52Speaker 2: If you're nasty, you know are there are four of
- 43:55Speaker 2: us we could, oh, wait, if there's two sixty nine,
- 44:02Speaker 2: what does that make it?
- 44:04Speaker 3: Wait eight, we're doing a fixed six and thirty nine.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So these the people would that were indentured servants would
- 44:15Speaker 1: jump ship, and so captains had to replenish their crew
- 44:18Speaker 1: and so then they would rely on the services of
- 44:20Speaker 1: these crimps, which we talked about, which was just like
- 44:22Speaker 1: a what would you describe it as.
- 44:24Speaker 5: Like a I mean, yeah, basically, I mean it's like
- 44:30Speaker 5: a It ultimately is like a con man meets slave owner.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Really yeah, yeah, yeah, it was it was your timechare salesman. Yeah,
- 44:39Speaker 1: but the timeshare was you.
- 44:40Speaker 3: Right, can and you signed this may of course it's
- 44:44Speaker 3: kind of like a pimp almost a little bit.
- 44:46Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, crimp pimp. That that's really well, there you go,
- 44:50Speaker 1: I go, You're welcome.
- 44:51Speaker 3: We just figured it out.
- 44:53Speaker 1: But there's no concrete proof that there was an organized
- 44:56Speaker 1: tunnel based system doing the heavy lifting for these crimps
- 45:01Speaker 1: in the Shanghai. So it goes back to these nineteen
- 45:04Speaker 1: thirty stories and then the nineteen seventies, and it's just
- 45:08Speaker 1: built with these tales over the year. But you know what,
- 45:12Speaker 1: here on both of our podcasts, we do not let
- 45:15Speaker 1: the facts get in the way of a good story, right,
- 45:18Speaker 1: it's part of the good story.
- 45:19Speaker 3: We loved every second of this tour. Right, Oh oh
- 45:22Speaker 3: my god, best time hunts. Okay.
- 45:27Speaker 1: So, Jody and I have come up with a rating
- 45:29Speaker 1: system for gift shops and tours and it is the
- 45:33Speaker 1: Squatch system and squashes because our Lord and save your bigfoot,
- 45:39Speaker 1: mister squatch satch. So five squatches is the most you
- 45:44Speaker 1: can give to a tour or a gift shop. Why
- 45:48Speaker 1: it is just tours and gift shops. You just have
- 45:51Speaker 1: to figure out, I.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Don't know, start reviewing some other stuff.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Okay, I mean we're just beginners, that's all.
- 45:57Speaker 1: So, Cassie, how many squatches would you give at one
- 46:02Speaker 1: to five of the Shanghai Tunnel tours?
- 46:05Speaker 2: Uh?
- 46:11Speaker 3: Okay, honestly I would say a five because there was beer.
- 46:16Speaker 3: You got to taste beer. Yeah, I forgot. You got
- 46:18Speaker 3: a full beer. Yes, please tell us what you get
- 46:21Speaker 3: with your ticket. You get a tasting of two different
- 46:24Speaker 3: beers in where did we taste those beers? In the tunnels?
- 46:28Speaker 3: In like a little bar area the basement. It was creepiest.
- 46:32Speaker 3: Sound like I was going to say the peepie PEEPI bar.
- 46:36Speaker 3: They have like an old bar down there, and I
- 46:38Speaker 3: don't know where the bar came from or anything, but
- 46:40Speaker 3: it looked really cool down there, for sure, there stairs
- 46:44Speaker 3: to nowhere next to it. It was really cool. Now,
- 46:48Speaker 3: this is the one thing you can't be. You can't
- 46:51Speaker 3: have bad knees.
- 46:52Speaker 1: You have to be able to climb things, and not
- 46:55Speaker 1: as bad as going in the stadium high school where
- 46:59Speaker 1: you have to duck. Yeah, I mean you have to
- 47:02Speaker 1: dug a little couple areas ability, like major mobility issues. Yeah,
- 47:09Speaker 1: three times in stadium. It was kind of yeah, it
- 47:11Speaker 1: was kind of like a fancy ladder. Yeah, okay, So
- 47:14Speaker 1: you would say five to ten thousand squatches.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Yes, definitely, and you get a full beer at the
- 47:19Speaker 3: end included.
- 47:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and the two tastings were not just like shy
- 47:24Speaker 1: tastings like he gives you a nice.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Three to four rounds, might have the yeah, that might
- 47:31Speaker 3: be illegal. It wasn't, Doug, It was the ghost. It
- 47:35Speaker 3: was a normal amount of tasting whatever it is.
- 47:39Speaker 4: It was the perfect legal amount.
- 47:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 47:42Speaker 1: So, Caitlin, how many squatches would you give the Shanghai
- 47:46Speaker 1: Tunnel tours to shang High Tunnel Tour.
- 47:50Speaker 3: I don't know. Why there's two tours tours tours tours.
- 47:54Speaker 5: Uh, okay, well listen while Cassie's over here handing out
- 47:57Speaker 5: ten thousand everything to every one, let's see.
- 48:02Speaker 4: I feel like I'll even it out. I don't know,
- 48:07Speaker 4: like three point.
- 48:07Speaker 3: Five, okay, So why why three point five? What was it?
- 48:12Speaker 4: The because I didn't want to be there?
- 48:16Speaker 3: Okay, so tell us why you didn't want to be there?
- 48:18Speaker 4: Because I don't like spooky, So.
- 48:20Speaker 3: So doc do a haunted podcast.
- 48:26Speaker 4: No, that is against my will.
- 48:28Speaker 5: And we have a rating system as well, and it
- 48:31Speaker 5: is now it's the number of scoots that I have
- 48:34Speaker 5: to do into my chair as she tells me these stories.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Now that just makes me think of boots scooting from
- 48:40Speaker 3: my dog too.
- 48:43Speaker 4: Yeah, but it just it's not a boogie, it's uh.
- 48:48Speaker 3: The next rating system we have is like how bad
- 48:51Speaker 3: does your buttet?
- 48:52Speaker 2: Like?
- 48:52Speaker 3: How many butt scoots do you need to do some days? Five?
- 49:01Speaker 1: But I feel like I need more favor Okay, Jody,
- 49:08Speaker 1: how many squatches do you give? How many snort squatches
- 49:12Speaker 1: do you give the Shang High Tunnel Tours ten?
- 49:16Speaker 3: I give it ten. It was only five.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I know.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I just felt like you're like Tad. How do I
- 49:23Speaker 3: get do Tad over here?
- 49:24Speaker 4: This little anarchist I don't like rules.
- 49:28Speaker 6: Yeah, She's thing is you know, part of me is
- 49:32Speaker 6: like Jody, her nurse and you know about the pain
- 49:34Speaker 6: scal when people say twelve and you're like, it's not
- 49:38Speaker 6: a twelve, you have a twelve anyway, Just kidding, but anyway, anyway, No,
- 49:46Speaker 6: I thought it was a five. But then I just
- 49:48Speaker 6: didn't even feel like that was good enough, so I thought, Okay,
- 49:50Speaker 6: I'm gonna double it, because it was just I just
- 49:53Speaker 6: I don't know the ambiance the stories and the way
- 49:56Speaker 6: he told him wasn't like trying to get you to
- 49:58Speaker 6: believe and trying to trick you.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I didn't. It was like, I appreciate a little bit
- 50:04Speaker 3: of history.
- 50:05Speaker 6: On this, and this is the experience that I've had,
- 50:07Speaker 6: and these are the stories that we're told, and this
- 50:09Speaker 6: is why, and he told it in a very storytelling way,
- 50:13Speaker 6: and then just the way the.
- 50:15Speaker 3: Moods were all set, and then it was just it
- 50:18Speaker 3: was good.
- 50:19Speaker 1: He made Shaye jump up one whole point, and her
- 50:23Speaker 1: ghost belief that that got there made him double.
- 50:28Speaker 3: You guys, I don't think that even Chris has been
- 50:31Speaker 3: able to do that.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I know. That's why I was like, Chris, don't listen
- 50:35Speaker 1: to this episode. It almost sounds like we're saying you're
- 50:39Speaker 1: not our favorite tour guide, and that's not true. You
- 50:41Speaker 1: are still our favorite tour guide.
- 50:43Speaker 3: Chris. Well, now you have to explain because we didn't
- 50:46Speaker 3: explain the photos, so now we have to explain the
- 50:48Speaker 3: reason up a whole point.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Yes, so real quick, who wants to explain it you? Okay, okay,
- 50:53Speaker 1: but what's your Squatch score? I am giving this a
- 50:56Speaker 1: four point five. The only reason I'm not giving a
- 51:00Speaker 1: full five is because it smelled like mildew and urine.
- 51:06Speaker 3: Well, what was it? That's a ambiance? Yes, authentic? What no,
- 51:11Speaker 3: can't I had? You're such a press. I still think
- 51:16Speaker 3: it could have been a paranormal experience you were having.
- 51:19Speaker 3: I think you were smelling the thousands of homeless people.
- 51:26Speaker 4: It definitely smells amazing down there. She's the one that's
- 51:30Speaker 4: weird a disgusting.
- 51:34Speaker 1: When we were down in our downstairs bar, which sounds
- 51:38Speaker 1: sexual when I came out of my mouth. So we're
- 51:44Speaker 1: in this this peepee bar, which also sounds sexually.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Where I'm at it's a bar in the basement, not
- 51:52Speaker 3: the bar.
- 51:53Speaker 1: He tells us about this experience that they had with
- 51:57Speaker 1: one group of guests where somebody took a picture of
- 52:00Speaker 1: this one specific location. He shows us the picture and
- 52:03Speaker 1: you can clearly see the very creepy form of a
- 52:06Speaker 1: very creepy person in a flannel shirt and a dog
- 52:09Speaker 1: at their feet, and it is creepy, af like. It
- 52:13Speaker 1: gave me the chills. I definitely my butthole puckered. Mm hmm,
- 52:18Speaker 1: it's puckering right now.
- 52:19Speaker 6: If you have the face the face on that picture,
- 52:21Speaker 6: if you zoom in on it, it's just like kind
- 52:24Speaker 6: of distorted and weird, but also real.
- 52:27Speaker 1: But then he followed it up with a story about
- 52:31Speaker 1: this thing called the Philip Experiment, which I'm not going
- 52:33Speaker 1: to get into now, but it was basically like a
- 52:36Speaker 1: group of academics that tried to make a fake ghost
- 52:42Speaker 1: by like if everybody focuses on one concept, they believe
- 52:45Speaker 1: in it, and then you can see it and you
- 52:47Speaker 1: can actually make it do things, and they manage to
- 52:50Speaker 1: make manifest So his question at the end for everybody
- 52:54Speaker 1: was our ghosts actually the remnants of people that existed,
- 52:59Speaker 1: or it is is it the like combined energy of
- 53:03Speaker 1: people believing in a certain thing.
- 53:04Speaker 3: And then he was like, bye, yeah, that's what I mean.
- 53:07Speaker 6: Like my drop wasn't cheesy, and he wasn't preachy, and
- 53:13Speaker 6: he wasn't trying to trick it. And then he put
- 53:15Speaker 6: those thoughts out there, and that's where I was.
- 53:17Speaker 3: Like, Yeah, it was extra. It was extra.
- 53:22Speaker 1: So we're going to get into the Phillip experiment. I think, Yeah,
- 53:24Speaker 1: that's a whole ass episode for sure. I don't care
- 53:27Speaker 1: that it's not Pacific Northwest. We're gonna we gotta do it.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Gotta do it. Sometimes you just do stuf for yourself.
- 53:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 53:31Speaker 4: Sometimes you can just twist it in such.
- 53:35Speaker 3: A way though, like a nipple. I have one more
- 53:41Speaker 3: thing to say though, Yes about Okay, So in the
- 53:44Speaker 3: photo you mentioned, it looked and everyone agreed, it looks
- 53:47Speaker 3: like he's wearing a flannel shirt, Like you can clearly
- 53:50Speaker 3: kind of see the pattern of his shirt. And we
- 53:52Speaker 3: did an episode. Our audience might be familiar, yours might
- 53:56Speaker 3: not be, but we did an episode about flannel man.
- 53:59Speaker 3: I've never heard of it, and it is just this
- 54:01Speaker 3: thing that some people have seen and it's just this
- 54:03Speaker 3: random man who shows up in a flannel shirt and
- 54:06Speaker 3: sometimes just me, it's just you. But you guys were
- 54:09Speaker 3: wearing your flannel shirts today.
- 54:11Speaker 6: You know, I bet we're going to show up as
- 54:12Speaker 6: flannel men and people's your flannel man in pictures?
- 54:16Speaker 3: Why so sexist? Are you going to be a flannel
- 54:18Speaker 3: lady or flannel person? There was actually a flannel woman
- 54:21Speaker 3: and in one of the stories I found, so it's
- 54:23Speaker 3: flannel thems, but one of them, no, it doesn't. But
- 54:28Speaker 3: one of the things is he's sometimes seen with a dog,
- 54:31Speaker 3: which is also very interesting because there's clearly a dog
- 54:35Speaker 3: in this photo as well.
- 54:44Speaker 1: Everybody, if you come to Portland, go do the Shangha.
- 54:48Speaker 1: If you want Doug, you have to call in and
- 54:51Speaker 1: ask for Doug. He's fantastic. Make sure you get a Doug,
- 54:55Speaker 1: make sure you stay and half pizza.
- 54:56Speaker 3: We did. You can actually get it by the slice,
- 54:59Speaker 3: which you not realized.
- 55:00Speaker 1: We were a whole pizza Shane, I have a lot
- 55:03Speaker 1: of pizza to eat. Beer was great. They make their
- 55:06Speaker 1: own beer. Pizza is fantastic. Great location, well, no location
- 55:10Speaker 1: is not great. Great inside the building the location can
- 55:13Speaker 1: be a little sketches.
- 55:14Speaker 3: To just be safe out there. Yeah, and all the
- 55:17Speaker 3: staff was nice. The bartender like everyone re encountered five
- 55:21Speaker 3: squatches across the board for everybody at Old Town Pizza
- 55:25Speaker 3: and Brewing.
- 55:26Speaker 1: Right, yeah, yes, definitely would come back. All right, well,
- 55:35Speaker 1: so what do you guys want to say to your listeners?
- 55:40Speaker 3: Perfect, no notes, have a creepy day and see you
- 55:48Speaker 3: down the rabbit hole. And then we did not do
- 55:53Speaker 3: a tarot reading specifically for Shanghai Tunnels in the episode
- 55:58Speaker 3: because we were you know, we were with it was
- 56:00Speaker 3: four girls, four girls, Okay, we're hanging out. We were
