- 3:25a complete stalemate. The police and the insurance investigators had been unable to locate
- 3:30the thieves or trace any of the loot, which included a jewelry, silver,
- 3:34and wearing apparel that had been taken from the residence. I requested Don
- 3:38to forward whatever details they had, along with an accurate list of the stolen
- 3:40items and complete descriptions expense account item two two dollars care fare to and from
- 3:51the Office of International Adjustment Bureau, where I refresh my memory concerning R.

- 3:59in ninety seven. He'd been involved in a well engineered swindle of the Seamen

- 4:05testimony that finally put him behind the bars. Right h Vance, Yeah,
- 4:17hello Dollar, You haven't changed a bit, you have you? Sure?
- 4:23I have? You took seven years of my life away from me. Did

- 5:05out. You know what, she wouldn't let me in the house. She
- 5:09gave me forty dollars and told me to go out and get a decent job.
- 5:13Work hard, she said, and in six months, if everything is
- 5:15okay and you're not in any trouble, you can come home to me and
- 5:19the kids. And if not, she says, I'm going to divorce you.
- 5:25What do you want me to say, Offer me a seat, invite
- 5:29me to sit down. I'm a human being. Two sure? Thanks again?
- 5:36Well, well I thought about it a lot. You know, if
- 5:42you hadn't been out to get me eight years ago, I might have had
- 5:46you over to dinner. Maybe we could have been friends. Maybe. Now
- 5:49what's this all about? Advance? Okay, I can't get a job.
- 5:55I'll have to go on business for myself. I need a steak. That's
- 5:58why I called you. Go On, did you do like I asked you
- 6:01to look up the Todd case? I call Wilmington about it. There's nothing
- 6:04new happening. I'm happening. That's something new and I can help for a
- 6:10price. All right, go on, But I want my name out of
- 6:13the picture. Could you fix it? Probably? I don't have to talk
- 6:16with the police sooner or later. All I'm asking is your promised to keep
- 6:19my name out of it. Otherwise it's no go I'll tell me something about
- 6:23it before I make any promises. Vance fair enough, you've got a list
- 6:28of stolen item not yet, won't be here until tomorrow. When it gets
- 6:31here, you'll find it was a mink coat that a lot. I think
- 6:33most of it was jewelry, but it was a mink coat labeled from Zella
- 6:36back Furs in New York, and the inside lining carried this serial number two
- 6:44seven three five six. All right, I'll take it easy. Vance expense
- 6:53account item three two dollars and fifty cents. Another long distance phone call to
- 6:56Wilmington and Don Freed, who will verify that the serial is furnished by Orange
- 7:00Vance fittedt those in the stolen man coat. I explained how I'd come about
- 7:04the information at hand, leaving out any mention of names. Read talk with
- 7:09his boss, and form me back a half an hour later. You can
- 7:12go ahead and work on a dollar. There's a five thousand dollar reward posted
- 7:15five thousand. Will split it between you and your friend if anything worthwhile turns

- 7:34You tell me where the code is and who has it, and I'll handle
- 7:36it from there. If it turns out to be anything, you'll get paid
- 7:41for it. All I've had so far is talk. I'll tell you where
- 7:44the code is and who has it. But before I do that, you
- 7:46give me a check, a check for twenty five hundred you'd dated two days
- 7:50from now. I'll give you a chance to look into it and see if
- 7:54I know what I'm talking about, and you can stop payment any time within

- 9:05the police files revealed that she was not listed. About seven o'clock, I
- 9:09had a bite to wheed, and then I walked over to the fifty seventh
- 9:11Street address, a small apartment building. Yeah, hello, I'm looking for
- 9:26Gloria tuney. Oh you have wrong apartments right across the hall. I was

- 9:48old friend of Gloria's. No, no, I'm just on business. Well
- 9:54I'll tell her you came by good fine. By the way, how long
- 9:58has miss Tierney lived? About a year? Why? Or I just wonder
- 10:03to thank you Johnny Dollar, New Western Hotel. That's right. Quite a
- 10:09minute. Here, take my card insurance sort of the apartment house manager,
- 10:20It said ethel Stromberg on the mailbox, smiled politely and closed the door.
- 10:24I went outside the building. I took a plant across the street. I

- 10:56said, I expect to leave town tomorrow. Is it important? I think
- 11:01so? Yes. Could I see it at night? Well, I don't
- 11:03know. I could be there in fifteen minutes. I don't understand. I'll
- 11:05come right over. Well, all right, I was there in less than
- 11:15fifteen minutes. What things weren't all right? As a matter of fact,
- 11:18things looked all wrong. Gloria Attorney's apartment was duck and she didn't answer when
- 11:22I knocked on the door. I tried it. The door was locked.
- 11:26You now look here. I don't think you have any right about the glock.
- 11:31Oh it's you, missus Strombergy. Well, where's Glory? I don't
- 11:33know. You don't know. She was waiting to meet you. Well out
- 11:37here in the hallway. She came in to night, and I gave her
- 11:39your message, and then she went in in college and then came back out
- 11:43and said you were coming by. Well she's gone. Well that's funny.
- 11:46Tell me, did you hear anyone out here? No? Well, maybe

- 12:11so do I you're sure she isn't outside waiting for you. I didn't
- 12:16see any well, I'll look again. Did you see her? Not a

- 12:26she wearing, Missus Stromberg? Oh she had her coat on, her mink
- 12:30coat? Yes? Well how do you know about her mink coat? A
- 12:33friend of mine. I'll take a look around out here, all right?
- 12:37Oh, win, then I'll come with you. You know, of course
- 12:41she might have a second look. Is that Gloria? Well, yes,
- 12:46I think so. Something's wrong with her? Yes, A girl crossing the
- 12:50street in the mink coat weaves slightly from side to side. As I got
- 12:54close to her, I could see. She was a pretty girl in the
- 12:56late twenties, blonde hair, dark guys. They looked up as I came
- 13:00up to her. I just stopped and stood there, weaving slightly. Jenny,
- 13:05Yes, what can I help you? I'm Johnny Dollars. Come on,
- 13:09we better go inside. Yes, what is it? He struck me?
- 13:16What he struck me? And I come on careful now shot? Oh
- 13:28easy, now, thank you, thank you very much. You're okay.
- 13:35Look on the car. What the car? No? All three slugs had
- 13:45hit her and she fell back into my arms by the time I could reach
- 13:48for it and get my gun out. The black Catillac and Howeber was driving
- 13:50it. We're out of side around the corner, and there'd been no light
- 13:54on the rear license plate. Oh easy, now, easy, mister Dollars.
- 14:00The police, call the police quick, yes, right away, you
- 14:03know, let's see if we can miss. Don't try to talk, Gloria,
- 14:07don't try to move. We'll have help here in a minute, Oh,
- 14:30Johnny Dollars, New York Police Department, mister Dollar. Oh hi,
- 14:33I just went over your statement of the officers who went to the scene of

- 14:43some questions. I want to ask you. Sure, glad to do what
- 14:46I can. Where can I meet you? What's the matter with right here
- 14:48at headquarters? Okay? Saying about an hour? Making a half an hour?
- 14:52I said, I want to get on with the case. From two
- 14:54twelve, Sergeant Daniel Mapes, Okay, Sergeant, I'll be there. Expense
- 15:03accounts submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar the Four State Insurance Company, Wilmington,
- 15:07Delaware. The following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the Todd
- 15:13matter. A burglary that occurred six months ago, but the murder try occurred
- 15:16only a few hours ago. Expense account idem six sixteen dollars and forty cents.
- 15:24One telegram from me to Chief Investigator Don Freed, Four State Insurance.
- 15:28I explained events up to date and requested that Freed contact their New York office
- 15:31and employee council for me in the event the New York police chose to hold
- 15:35me as a material witness and the shooting of Gloria Tierney. We aren't going
- 15:39to hold you. Why should we I don't know. Why should you sit
- 15:41down? Take it easy? Okay? Thanks. So you're a freelance insurance
- 15:48investigator. Yeah, that's right, working for four State out of Wilmington.
- 15:50And that's right. Okay, suppose you give it to me. Well,
- 15:54you got it right in front of you there in that report. I told
- 15:58it to the invest to getting offices right after the shooting last night. Now
- 16:03you tell it to me, all right. I made an appointment to meet
- 16:07this girl. She called me about twelve o'clock midnight, and I went on
- 16:11over to her apartment. She wasn't around when I got there, so I
- 16:15waited and talk to her landlady. A few minutes later, I saw her
- 16:18coming across the street. I went over to meet her because she looked like
- 16:21she'd been hurt or something. I walked her bank across the street. Somebody
- 16:26pulled up in a car just as we got to the curbing, says here
- 16:29Black Kaddy, nineteen fifty five vill Yeah. I didn't pay too much attention.
- 16:33I was a licensed number, couldn't tell it was black dog. Okay,
- 16:37go on, there was a man in it. I didn't see his
- 16:40face, didn't even notice him. Really. We just started shooting. The
- 16:44girl was hit three times. I was trying to help her and he got
- 16:47away. Well, what else? That's it? Okay? Tell me why
- 16:52you were in here yesterday afternoon checking to see if this Glory attorney at a
- 16:56record. I was about to contact her. I wanted to know if she
- 17:00ever been in trouble. Now, tell me what you're working on the Todd
- 17:03case. Todd, Yeah, burglary out on Long Island about six seven months
- 17:07ago. I had reason to believe the girl might be able to help me
- 17:11on it because of what? Because of her mink coats. I'm glad you
- 17:15answered that way, Deller. The coats in the lab. Now they're looking
- 17:18it over. We found it listed and are stolen property files. So far
- 17:23your story is okay, but believe me, it isn't over yet. Tell
- 17:26me more. We know about the coat. We want to know about the
- 17:30girl who was wearing it. Sorry, I can't help you. We didn't
- 17:33ever prints on file here, but we sent them off to Washington. She's
- 17:37still unconscious. She's in pretty bad shape. She can't talk, you can.
- 17:42What's her angle? I don't know. You don't know who shot her.
- 17:45He didn't get the license number. He just stood there and let it
- 17:48happen. Oh you were interested in was your mink coat? Look? Is
- 17:52that what you're trying to tell me? I might be through trying to tell
- 17:56you anything. Pow, don't get smarty pants with meat Deller. I got
- 18:00myself a shooting straighten out. I'll straightener any way I can. What else
- 18:04would she have in the Todd business? You tell me nothing? A small
- 18:08diamond ring and a little finger. It's not on the stolen property list.
- 18:14Tell me, Dalla, did your insurance company pay off this claim? Yes,
- 18:18the whole thing about seventy five seventy five thousands. Right, Well,
- 18:23at least you got the coat back, even if it has got three bullet
- 18:26holes in it. Maybe we'll get a line on the whole job if she
- 18:29regains consciousness. Meanwhile, you can sit here and tell me about your tip.
- 18:33What who put you on to Gloria Tierney? No, No, I'm
- 18:37afraid I can't tell you that. Why not because I promised not to disclose
- 18:41any name. Oh, I can tell you this much though. The man
- 18:45who told me about Gloria Attorney couldn't possibly have had anything to do with a
- 18:48Todd case. He was in prison when it happened to have his name,
- 18:51so I can check it. He's in Indiana. Now, he's got a
- 18:53name in Indiana. What is it? Sorry, you're going to sit there
- 18:57and tell me he gave you a name to start and that's all you bought.
- 19:00Yep. Suppose I told you I don't believe anything, and I think
- 19:04I'll hold you for a while until you forget about whatever do to do?
- 19:07Made with an next con or. Suppose I told you that a lawyer for
- 19:11my insurance company is on his way down here right now, just to see
- 19:15that I get treated right. What's funny, you insurance guys? You know
- 19:22what? You give me a pain right here. We went on like that
- 19:30a little while. Then I accompanied Sergeant Mapes the Glory attorney's apartment. A
- 19:36full crew of technicians were there, giving the premises a complete check. Mapes
- 19:40dispatched two sets of detectives to cover the neighborhood for possible witnesses to the shooting.
- 19:44Another pair began to cover the apartment house itself. I went with Mapes
- 19:47to talk to the manager, Missus Stromberg. She looked white and shaken.
- 19:52You remember, mister Deller. Yes, hello, mister Dollar. How's poor
- 19:57Gloria. I'm very good, miss Stromberg. She's still unconscious and we're still
- 20:02pretty much in the dark about all this. Missus Stromberg. Where is she?
- 20:04What hospital? I'd like to go see her? Maybe there's something I
- 20:07can do. This thing you can do is try to help us find out
- 20:11who shut her. She's at the police emergency hospital right now, missus Stromberg.
- 20:14I'll have them phone you when she can see people. Thank you.
- 20:17Oh what an awful thing she Well, what's it all about? Why would
- 20:21anyone want to shoot Gloria? We hope we can ask her that question right
- 20:25now. We're going to try to find out all we can and maybe you
- 20:26can help us, well, I hope. So what can I tell you?
- 20:30Where she worked, she lived, what people she knew? Yesterday?
- 20:34You told me you'd known her for a year, yes, ever since she
- 20:37moved in? All right? Was she a nice girl? Of course she
- 20:41was a nice girl, quiet minded, her own business. Where she work
- 20:45it? Well, I don't know. I mean, Gloria doesn't work.
- 20:48As far as I know. Who pays her rent? She always gave me
- 20:52a check? Who gave her a check? Well, I really don't know.
- 20:55Don't you know anything? What's the matter with you? Well, I'm
- 20:56trying. Why don't you go sit down? All right, I'll sit down
- 21:00here, Missus Stromberg. What can you tell us about her? You know,
- 21:04all we can contact your family. Think about it. Well, I
- 21:08don't know. I know they live in California somewhere, but that's all I
- 21:12do know. She talked about them now and then? How about her friends
- 21:17here and Tom? What about them? Well? For instance, the man
- 21:21who drove the black cattle act last night? I never saw that car around
- 21:25here before. Did she talk about her friends to you? Why? No,
- 21:29she's a pretty girl, young boyfriends. Oh yes, she did talk
- 21:33about them now and then? Do you suppose one of them had something to
- 21:37do with this? Missus Stromberg? Some guy pulled up on a black Caddy
- 21:41last night and pumped three slugs into her. She acted funny before that,
- 21:44according to you, run out when she was supposed to meet Dollar here.
- 21:47Don't you know if any of her friends drove a car like that? No,
- 21:49you know this, but you don't know that. What kind of a
- 21:52friend were you? What kind of a friend were you? That girl's lying
- 21:56in a hospital right now. She's got a slug here? Another one here?
- 21:59And here they've operated twice. You weep and holler and stand around ringing
- 22:03your hands about her, but you won't open your mouth about helping us find
- 22:06who did it. Now, let's start with that car again. You've got
- 22:10the front apartment here. You can see the street from those two windows.
- 22:14Have you ever seen that black caddy here before? Yes? Oh? Why
- 22:17didn't you say so in the first place? Whose is it? I don't
- 22:21know. I mean, I don't know his full name. What do you
- 22:22know about him? His name is Bill or something, Bill's something. Yes,
- 22:29that's a big help. What does he look like? Where does he
- 22:30work? What does he do? I don't know. I really don't know.
- 22:34She never introduced me to him, but she talked about him. She'd
- 22:37say Bill's come and by to eid or build did this? Or builded that?
- 22:41But she never mentioned his last name. But he drove the caddy?
- 22:45Yes, what does he look like? I told you she never introduced me.
- 22:49I heard that part. But I know of someone young and fresh and
- 22:52pretty like Laurie at Tierney lived across the hall from my wife. My wife
- 22:56would be at the window every time she heard the bell ring or heard a
- 22:59car drive up out front. She'd want to see who was buying her the
- 23:02candy and flowers? Who was knocking on the door. Isn't that so,
- 23:06Missus Stromberg? Yes? I mean no, yeah, what do you mean?
- 23:11I'll look for the third time. What does this guy Bill look like?
- 23:15Well, he's tall and very dark. Tall what does that mean?
- 23:18Tall like me? Tall like Dollar? Tall like what like mister Dollar?
- 23:22How old? How did he dress? What kind of bill? Why don't
- 23:26you go through that offering me to sit down? Part? Now? All
- 23:27right, all right, I was wrong about you, as I admitted,
- 23:32Maybe I was kind of wrong about you Dollar. Hardly anybody ever admits anything
- 23:36these days. Okay, I'm sorry, I'm raising my voice, Missus Stromberg.
- 23:42But tell us about the man. All you can remember about Bill heavy
- 23:45light, a husky fellow. And he dressed very nicely too. What color
- 23:49was his hair? Dark? I think he always wore a hair. How
- 23:53about his eyes? I don't know about How old? Would you say?
- 23:59Oh? Thirty? Maybe thirty five? I'm not very good at ages.
- 24:03How often did he come here to see her? Once or twice a week?
- 24:07Gloria has been going with him? Yea? Did she ever mentioned where
- 24:10he works? Or what he does. No, No, she never mentioned
- 24:12that. Do you have any idea how long she's known him, how long
- 24:15she's been going with him? Well, I have no idea. I just
- 24:18know he's been coming to see her ever since she moved in here this bill.
- 24:23Would you say he had money, missus Stromberg, Yes, i'd say
- 24:26so. He drove that big expensive car and always best, so nice,
- 24:30And of course he gave Glory of that coat the main coat. Yes.
- 24:37Do you know if he ever gave her any jewelry? I don't know.
- 24:41I don't think so. Glory had usually run across the hall and show me
- 24:45when he gave her something. Mostly they were small gifts, candy and things
- 24:49like that, but I don't remember if he ever gave her any jewelry.
- 24:53Did he ever bring any friends here? I don't know. Was Gloria going
- 24:59to marry him? She never talked about it. Are you sure about that?
- 25:03Yes? She never said, And I never asked why? Why not?
- 25:06Well, I don't know. I never asked her. I wanted to,
- 25:10but I never asked her. You think right away, I've been a
- 25:11busybody watching that girl and so on. Well, yes, I watched her
- 25:15from time to time, and I was her friend here. But there are
- 25:18some things we just didn't talk about. The sure were well as you ask
- 25:23me questions, I realized how much we didn't talk about. I can't tell
- 25:26you where she came from, or where her family is, or who Bill
- 25:30is, or what's she planned for the future. I just know she was
- 25:33a nice, decent, honest sort of a girl. Yes, we got
- 25:36that impression, Missus Stromberg. Anything you want to ask Dolly, No,
- 25:40no, no, My apologies again for raising my voice. Thank you for
- 25:44the information, Missus Stromberg. Come on, Dolly, Okay, goodbye,
- 25:48goodbye, goodbye. Well you got it out of her. Yeah, but
- 25:56I don't trust her. Took too much work. You really as tough as
- 26:00you look. Sure, here are good cop Mapes. Thanks. I like
- 26:07to have somebody mentioned that every five years. Well butt, I get up
- 26:11this guy's description. Now there's a whole fall right there. I'm we sure
- 26:21haven't got much to go on. Communications. Please, as Dan Mapes,
- 26:30I want an ap b out on what Oh, I'll give it to you
- 26:36later. Johnny the hospital phoned in two minutes ago. Gloria, Yes,
- 26:44I think she's dying. There'll be another intriguing episode in our story of the
- 27:03Todd Matter. Tomorrow Tomorrow, I take some lessons from a good police one
- 27:07on how to find out what has to be found out? Join us,
- 27:10won't you? Yours truly? Johnny Dollar, Yours Truly? Johnny Doller starrying
- 27:22Bob Bailey is transcribed in Hollywood, written by John Dawson. It is produced
- 27:26and directed by Jack Johnstone. Be sure and join us tomorrow night at same
- 27:30time and station for the next exciting episode of Yours Truly. Johnny Doller,
- 27:36Roy Rowan, speaking welcome back. I love the interplay between Johnny and the
- 28:41police sergeant. It was kind of it's kind of a change from Johnny and
- 28:47the police always almost always being buddy buddy from the start, some nice tension
- 28:52leading to I think the starting of some grudging respect between them. So I
- 28:59thought that was very nicely played and a nice change of pace. All right.
- 29:04Onto listener comments and feedback, and received this on Facebook. This is
- 29:11from Larry who rights love the show. Adam found you on iTunes a while
- 29:15back and was instantly hooked. Johnny Doller is by far my favorite showing I
- 29:21was finally able to catch up to you. The only bad thing about this
- 29:23is now I have to wait for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays come around.
- 29:27Thanks for such an awesome podcast, and I'll keep listening well. I truly
- 29:32appreciate that, Larry. On the bright side, this may have been the
- 29:34best time to catch up, because if you caught up earlier, then you
- 29:38would have only been able to hear the show once a week. And again,
- 29:45thanks so much for listening and going through all those episodes to get caught
- 29:49up to us. I always like to hear that when people go to all
- 29:55the trouble to go through the old episodes, that kind of affirms that what
- 30:00I've been doing in general with going from start to finish on these shows really
- 30:07does work, and that people do want that sort of experience that it's not
- 30:11being covered by most other shows. There's, of course, the exception of
- 30:15a Christmas programs or occasionally something else seasonal, and that was actually the case
- 30:22on Johnny it All. I received an email from a listener wondering why we
- 30:26basically wondering why we skipped the Nick shern matter. Well, it was not
- 30:32a skipped unintentionally. It was a Christmas era Christmas era program and I decided
- 30:38just to wait till it was more seasonally appropriate. You know, it's kind
- 30:45of a challenge to do a Christmas episode with you're recording the program from somewhere
- 30:49where it's about. I think it's supposed to get up to one hundred and
- 30:52night tomorrow, so and probably not as big a challenge for those of you
- 30:56who are down under, but all right, well that will actually do it
- 31:02for today. We'll be back tomorrow with mister Moto, and then join us
- 31:06on Wednesday as we continue the Todd matter. In the meantime, send your
